The aim, Ms Davis said, was to make sure nobody felt they were alone during their darkest days - be it those suffering from mental health problems or friends and family members dealing with the aftermath of suicide. “People with mental illness can’t get up in the morning, let alone turn on a computer a find the help,” Ms Davis said. “I want to get the awareness out there, and directly hand the flyers with the support information to those who need it most. “We want to reach as many people in our community as possible ... give them

an avenue to reach out and say ‘yes, I need help’.” Cr Ryan agreed, saying there was a special bond between those who were united through such circumstances. “I suppose we (Bobo and I) connected in such a way, because of our experiences. There’s an understanding there that you don’t get with a health professional,” Cr Ryan said. “Seeing a loved one deteriorate in front of you is the most horrific thing you as a parent can go through, and something only another parent who has gone though it can understand.” But through this experience came

emotions that often needed dealing with too, the mothers said. “Everyone’s focused on the situation, or the patient, and nobody stops to ask if you as the parent, the partner are OK,” Ms Davis said. Cr Ryan agreed, saying there needed to be support services for the entire family. “People talk about it and talk about it, but there’s been no action. This needs to change,” Cr Ryan said. The inaugural HopeWalk will be held from 10am to 1pm at the Lakeside Park, Pakenham, on 10 September.

The 1.5km honour walk around the lake, in memory of those lost to suicide, kicks off at 11am. It will be followed by a family fun day including a sausage sizzle, giveaways, raffles and live entertainment. Participants are asked to wear orange and black, and are encouraged to bring photos of friends and family lost to suicide. One lost a family member to suicide, another almost did - and now Pakenham mothers Bobo Davis and Carol Ryan have joined forces to bring suicide awareness to the forefront of community conversation. Ms Davis’s world was turned upside down in April 2016 when her 22-yearold son Aaron killed himself after a seven-year battle with ice addiction. Friend, Cardinia Shire councillor Carol Ryan almost lost a family member to the drug, but fortunately was able to find them help. Together, the two say they reflect both sides of what addiction and suicide can become. “My family is the success story,” Cr Ryan said. “I can show there is hope, while Bobo is an example of the impact suicide has on the whole circle of the family unit.” While her world was torn apart when Aaron died, Ms Davis wants to show those who are affected by suicide that “while you can’t change it you can still smile”. “It’s OK to be OK,” Ms Davis said. “When we lost Aaron ... we didn’t know how we were going to survive. I was never going to work again. I was a hairdresser and I no longer cared what hair looked like. It’s a creative industry, and I had no joy.” What made it harder in the wake of Aaron’s death, Ms Davis said, was a lack of support. “I couldn’t find anyone to turn to. My biggest avenue now is to give people somewhere to go when they're absolutely lost and broken. I want to make it easier to find the help ... it’s way too hard,” Ms Davis said. The mothers, with the help of friend Carol Orrock, have organised Melbourne’s inaugural HopeWalk - a suicide prevention awareness event aimed at uniting community members touched by the tragedy. To be held at the Lakeside Lake, Pakenham on World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September, the walk also seeks to bring suicide and depression support in-

Moves will be so spectacular By Kyra Gillespie More than 100 students across eight schools have had their final group rehearsal with dance director Deon Nuku and associate dance director, Troy Phillips, in preparation for the Victorian State Schools Spectacular held on 16 September at Hisense Arena. There are 78 schools and 1187

students from around Victorian state schools participating in the mass dance group. All the schools rehearse individually and come together four times from February to August, in groups of 3-10 schools, to rehearse with the event choreographers to consolidate what they have learnt. It is Pakenham Consolidated School’s

Club brawl breaks after boxing clash A brawl broke out at the Cardinia Club, Pakenham, following a live screening of the muchhyped UFU Mayweather v McGregor clash. Fan favourite Floyd Mayweather beat Conor McGregor in the former’s final UFU match, watched by millions around the world. Locally, the Cardinia Club hosted a screening of the knockdown, which was followed by its own clash of sorts. Shortly after Sunday’s fight, about 3.45pm, police were called to the Racecourse Road premises in relation to a brawl involving a group of males. Police report one male presented himself with minor injuries but refused to take the matter further. It is unknown how many people were involved in the incident, or what started the fight.

Planting the seeds Getting closer to nature, learning handy outdoor skills and promoting sustainable living are ongoing pursuits for VCAL students at ECG College in Pakenham this semester. Outdoor adventures including bushwalking excursions, as well as tree planting sessions held at the Pakenham campus, involved several class groups on Friday, 25 August. Native shrubs and grasses planted by students along the front and side of the school as part of ECG College’s National Tree project were donated by Pakenham Toyota. This local business also funded planting kits for ECG College including plastic sleeves and bamboo poles to provide weather protection for the newly established plants. Maryknoll Indigenous Plant Nursery loaned students tree planting gear on the day. Class teacher Kim Caldwell said the students involved made a great contribution in planting trees at the campus and making the surrounding environs more sustainable. “They’ve also been making planter boxes for lemon and lime trees. Our students often benefit from workshops at Bunnings Pakenham and their local activities organiser kindly donated two citrus trees and potting mix to use,” Ms Caldwell said. Horticulture trainer Andrea Tindle helped students select suitable planting sites for trees, shrubs and grasses around the campus. She also

Homeowner woken by hooded burglar A man taking an afternoon nap was woken by a burglar in his Officer property. Police report the man was lying in bed at his Firewheel Road premises about 2.15pm on 24 August when he awake to someone in the house. The man confronted the offender, who then reportedly fled the house. Police are seeking the public’s help to identify the intruder, who was wearing a hoodie at the time of the incident. Dinner to help those in need Here’s the chance to have a great night out and help the community at the same time at Casey Cardinia Foundation’s Annual Charity Dinner at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Friday 13 October. And the night will all come together with the polish provided by MC Dave Whalen, who hails from Tooradin. “You can be entertained by a local band, enjoy the best of local produce and help local charities at the same time,” Casey Cardinia Foundation executive officer Therese Howell said. The charity dinner is the foundation’s major fundraiser with all money raised being ploughed back into the local community. Ms Howell said the foundation last year received grant applications from local groups to the tune of $240,000 which far exceeded its grant capacity. She said that demonstrated there was a real need for help in the Casey Cardinia region. “We need help more than ever, we simply can’t meet that need,” she said.

The 13-piece band Big and Horny will entertain guests at this year's Casey Cardinia Foundation Annual Charity Dinner. “We have more great projects out there than we have money to support them.” Ms Howell said that over the past decade and a bit the foundation had donated in the vicinity of $400,000 to local groups and projects. Last year it was able to help food relief projects like 4Cs and the Cranbourne Food Truck, disability access programs through Outlook and Livvi’s Place and a range of projects like mental health camps and camps for abused children. “We have been able to make a real difference but there are some very worthwhile projects out there that can’t get funding

at present, so it would be great to increase our capacity,” Ms Howell said. “People can come along to our charity dinner and learn about the grants we announce, learn a bit about the foundation, have a great night and contribute to the community at the same time. Crusade for creativity By Cam Lucadou-Wells Creativity comes to Berwick artist Glo Edkins in sweeping, colourful brush strokes. But the energetic painter, who has entered six portraits into the prestigious Archibald Prize, says creativity seems to be a dying art. Ms Edkins has had her third portrait accepted at a state-based Salon des Refuses - a select exhibition of paintings that didn’t make the Archibald final cut of 42. Or also known as the ones that got away. This year’s painting was of a treasured friend and arts volunteer Jill Page, who recently received an Order of Australia Medal. “I tell all my friends they should do something special, and I can put them in the Archibald,” Ms Edkins jokes. “I drew (Jill) as if she’s on stage holding a sheet of music in her hand. “She’s sort of smiling at us like Mona Lisa.” It’s what Ms Edkins calls a traditional portrait, something different to this year’s controversial Archibald winner. “I thought the aim of the Archibald was to get a likeness of a person,” she says of the winner. “If that’s what they want, next time I won’t make the effort!” Ms Edkins says the skill of portraiture - which requires studying human beings - is being overwhelmed by photo realism. Even among Archibald works. “People are tracing and colouring in their photos. It’s all the rage and look lovely.” It points to a dying in creativity, she says. “It’s extremely important that people have their own thinking and tell their own stories in painting or in writing. “Now they’re just referring to Google!” Her other Archibald entries have been former mayors Shar Balmes, Janet Halsall and Lorraine Wreford as well as Casey arts administrator Megan McMahon and surgeon and lecturer Bruce Waxman. Halsall, McMahon and Waxman were subsequently selected for the Salon des Refuses.

Opinion Points are private I recently received an invitation from the State Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan to attend a morning tea next month at the Narre Warren Bowls Club. At the bottom of the invitation was a suggestions slip. It said if you want to make a suggestion, share an idea, or raise a concern, just return this slip. Silly me, I should have known that this meeting is really only intended for Labor Party supporters. I returned the suggestion slip to Luke Donnellan’s office with a comment for his agenda. It read “Melbourne is not the most liveable city in the world because governments are not accepting responsibility for an unsustainable population growth rate. Victoria’s underemployment rate is at a record high of 9.5 per cent; a key measure of economic health. Growth should be moderated to better reflect the capacity of the Victorian economy” at this time. Shortly after, I received a call from Robyn Hale, Luke Donnellan’s office manager and adviser. She informed me she could arrange a “private meeting” for me with Luke Donnellan, but my comments could not be placed on the meeting agenda as this was not the point of the meeting. I replied that growth and underemployment are public issues that are interconnected and impacting on the south-eastern area. But according to Robyn Hale, it is not appropriate to place them on the agenda of Luke Donnellan’s pending public meeting, even though I was invited to do so. This meeting is, therefore, not really about listening to the concerns of local people, in public, it’s about promoting failed Labor Party policies and Luke Donnellan. In my opinion, Luke Donnellan should now follow Judith Graley’s decision and not seek to stand again for the state seat of Narre Warren North. Both Judith Graley and Luke Donnellan appear to believe that the only policy solution for problems created by high growth is more and more infrastructure. Wrong.

Green light for bowls roof By Cam Lucadou-Wells A spectacular, state-of-the-art roof could elevate Narre Warren Bowls Club into one of Victoria’s premier bowls venues. On the verge of the club’s 30th anniversary, the proposed light-weight translucent canopy with LED ceiling lights across the club’s two greens is part of an ambitious “game plan”. It’s a far cry from the friendly club’s early days when members drank ‘tinnies’ in an under-construction clubhouse with a bare building frame and no roof. It also points to a reversal of the club’s dwindling membership since a new board took over 15 months ago. “Our charter is to become the premier small club in Victoria,” president Eric Sydenham said. “We want to be the first club that people in our community think of when they want to have a function, join a bowling club or attend a bowling club. “We want to become a community hub and we’re working towards that in various ways.” Without resorting to pokies, the 175-member club has been recently accredited the lofty Lighthouse Club status from Bowls Victoria for its high performance and innovation. Participation in bowls is generally on the rise even if some clubs are folding due to a lack of members, Mr Sydenham said. “So many young people are attracted to the game. Most of the top bowlers are under 30. “It’s a changing scene.” Long-time member Stanley Birkett said the sport’s appeal is its accessibility to all-comers. “It’s the only sport I now that

Major renovations such as more synthetic greens, a semi-commercial kitchen and upgraded clubrooms are on the way. The club will celebrate its 30th anniversary at its Magid Drive clubrooms on 2 September from noon. The event will be marked by first president Bob Roff rolling the first jack to mark the start of the bowls season.

Chairo Christian School’s Pakenham campus held a Book Week Parade in celebration of their the school’s love for books and words. All students from every year level dressed up as their favourite book character for the big day - even the teachers joined in! Dressed as Captain Underpants was Ethan, who thinks the books are really funny. “This is the best costume ever,” Ethan said. But as Tack Saddlery’s exceptionally knowledgeable team member Linda Bennett explained, it’s the store’s sole focus on the equestrian industry as a whole that sets it apart from others within the region. “Our full attention is devoted to equestrian,” Linda said. “It’s in contrast to some other stores where you may get someone who knows a little bit about this and a little bit about that. “But that’s our difference - we have people who ride in the industry who know and attend a lot of competitions. “It’s our passion and it’s, basically, what we live and breathe - that is the real difference between us and other shops in this area. “People can come here and see us and know that their priority is our priority.” The team at Tack Saddlery has spent the past three months working tirelessly to get the store up and running and the hard work is already paying off in the form of an already well-stocked showroom. But, as Linda explained, there is plenty more to come from the new store on the block.

“We’re really going to be catering to every facet of the equestrian world,” Linda said. “We want to bring back to Pakenham what’s been missing for the past few years. “The in-store growth will be quite dramatic over the next six months. Ms Anderson said the ATO is focused on using data to identify errors. “Property owners should be aware that incorrect rental property claims will not go unnoticed. Technology enhancements and extensive use of data is allowing us to identify incorrect or suspicious claims. We also have a good idea of the locations likely to be used for holiday homes.”

The ATO is reminding taxpayers that it’s paying close attention to rental properties located in popular holiday destinations around Australia. Warriors have to strike now! By Russell Bennett If Brent Russell’s Pakenham Warriors are to make history and become the local Big V outfit’s first ever championshipwinning side, they’ll have to do it the hard way and fight back from a 0-1 start to their best-of-three series against the Collingwood All-Stars. The Warriors rode a wave of momentum into their series opener at ‘The Colosseum’ at Cardinia Life after a stirring semi-final series win over the Craigieburn Eagles. But the All-Stars - led by star guard Manny Hendrix - started well and led by four points at the end of the first, 22-18. He was particularly well guarded by Trent Lee throughout the contest - making just 12 of his 29 shot attempts - but he clearly adopts the elite scoring mentality of “you miss 100 per cent of the shots you don’t take”. Hendrix is always his team’s go-toguy down the stretch of games and has made an art-form over the years of drawing countless fouls, some eyebrow raising, and getting to the free-throw line. On Sunday at Pakenham he shot 9-14 from the stripe to lead all scorers with 33 points in an eventual five-point win, 8681.

For Pakenham, big man Josh Bjelan continued his brilliant form with 22 points and 14 boards on near 60 per cent shooting while skipper Ben Gaze was also stellar with 21 points before ultimately fouling out. Brad Bridgewater finished with 11 points and made a real impact on both ends of the floor despite being severely limited with a stomach bug, while Lee and the newly-married Brad Szalek were particularly impressive - chipping in with all the selfless defensive acts and onepercenters to keep their team in the hunt until the death. After trailing by four points - 41-37 at half-time, the Warriors bounced back to lead by three, 60-57, with a quarter left to play. But Collingwood had all the answers particularly in transition of turnovers. Pakenham has plenty of room for improvement to come in its game on both ends of the floor, which should encourage Russell and his players, but the time to recapture their form from the Craigieburn series is now. They have no other choice. Game 2 of the Big V Division 2 men’s grand final series is at Collingwood College this Saturday night from 7pm. Game 3, if required, is the following day at the same venue from noon.

FFV STATE LEAGUES REVIEW - CATCH-UP ROUND There was just one local catchup match played in the southeast area over the weekend, with the state league season just a fortnight away from its conclusion. Here is how each league stacks up as the season enters the business end. STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST While the Casey Comets currently sit mid-table with eight wins, four draws and eight losses, they are in the midst of a terrific momentum swing. Eagles’ finals dare By David Nagel Berwick and Cranbourne will battle for the first ticket to the South East Football Netball League grand final after the Eagles rolled arch-rival Narre Warren in Saturday’s qualifying final at Holm Park Reserve. Costly turnovers hampered the Eagles in the first half, but a brilliant second-half display - where they kept the most potent forward line in the competition to just three points - saw them waltz away with victory. Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey was a very proud man after the match, praising his side for its relentless pressure over four quarters. “I’m super proud of the boys, I think we’ve been building and building to something like this and finals football is all about pressure,” Goosey said. “You only play good sides in finals, so to keep a good side to no goals after half time was extremely pleasing. Shaun Marusic’s smother, Maxy (Gearon) did a tonne of work through the midfield and Cheekers (Ryan Davey) responded well after getting a bit of a bake at half time. I couldn’t be prouder of that effort.” The Magpies led by six points at half time, but the Eagles played inspired football in the second half, not allowing the Magpies any breathing space with a relentless brand of pressure perfectly suited to finals football. The Magpies began to turn over the footy, with players like Marusic, Mat Fletcher, Davey and Gearon providing a pacy forward line with ample supply of the ball. Zak Roscoe kicked two third-quarter goals, backed up by another to Luke BeeHugo, before two to Ryan Jones, and another to Marc Holt put the issue to bed in the final term. Roscoe finished with four for the Eagles, Jones three and Holt two,

while Brandon Osborne added another scalp to his outstanding collection by keeping Magpie sharpshooter Nick Scanlon to no goals. Aaron Wilson was dangerous early for the Magpies, kicking four, while Michael Collins and Jordyn Flannery were solid over four quarters. The Magpies will take on Beaconsfield in Sunday’s first semi-final at Berwick after Leigh McQuillen’s team ended Doveton’s season in the elimination final. The young Eagles - burdened by the loss of star ruckman Scott Meyer and emerging midfielder Connor Guley - frustrated Doveton in the first half, before unleashing three goals in three minutes at the start of the third to earn their advance. And it’s the third consecutive year that the Eagles have ended Doveton’s season at this juncture. Troy McDermott finished with four for the winners, Riley Verbi three and Lachie Modica two, while Michael Misso and Daniel Galante played starring roles through the midfield. Fill-in ruckman Jordy Roberts was brave and resilient against Russell Gabriel, who was still Doveton’s best performed player. Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman is confident his team will translate its all-conquering season into a silverware-winning September. “It’s a bit cliched, but I think we’ve continually got better as the season has unfolded, we’ve improved on a weekly basis and made some tweaks recently that I think will hold us in really good stead,” Kemperman said ahead of this week’s big clash. “I’ve also got confidence that the week’s rest will help us; it’s given us the opportunity to put some work into some players to try and have everyone hitting their straps at the precisely the right time.”

Doves downed in sweet revenge By David Nagel The old saying goes that a week is a long time in football - well we can add netball to that vernacular after Cranbourne produced a stunning turnaround against Doveton in Sunday’s elimination final at Berwick. Even on face value the Eagles 45-32 victory over the Doves was impressive, but when you take into consideration that Donna Wilson and her side were coming off a 28-47 loss to the Doves in round 18 - well it gives even more substance to the win. Sure the Doves were without their number-one strike weapon Rahni Samason, who was playing in a grand final for Heatherton, but Wilson was still circumspect taking a five-goal lead into the final quarter. “No matter who is on the court, Doveton is a very good side and they’ve done it to us before, coming from behind to beat us,” Wilson said. Cranbourne started impressively, opening up a 10-5 lead at the first break, with Alanah Hardy (goal attack) on fire and Tara Cecil (goal keeper) and Sharni Lambden (goal defence) proving tough nuts to crack in defence. The Eagles retained that five-goal lead until three-quarter time before opening up the turbo boosters with a 14-6 final term. Midcourters Nat Sparks (wing attack) and Darcy O’Donnell (wing defence) were amazing, but it was the impact of captain Steph Ryan (centre) that gave the Eagles the biggest boost heading in to the contest. The skipper was cleared to play by her physio on Thursday night, ending an agonising stint on the sidelines. “Steph has been injured for nine weeks and the plan was to always bring her back for this weekend,” Wilson said. “It’s hard to explain what she means to this

team, she’s the captain and having her back lifted the girls unbelievably. They’ve all been through the journey with Steph and the whole mentality changed with her back on the court. “She’s basically done nothing for the entire nine weeks, but she’s an incredibly fit person, and I’m not surprised by what she produced on the weekend. Having her back really switched the girls on.” Doveton should be proud of its efforts, with players like Shae Gee (GS), Chelsea Imanisani (GA), Hayley Stewart (C) and Liz Edwards (GK) working hard to narrow the gap in the second term. But this was Cranbourne’s day, who will head back to Berwick this Sunday for a cut-throat eliminator against Beaconsfield. Beacy will need to regroup after wasting a fast start against Tooradin in Saturday’s qualifying final at Holm Park Reserve. Beacy led by two goals at the first two breaks before the Seagulls well and truly clicked into gear, scoring 30-11 after half time to score a runaway 50-33 triumph. Beaconsfield’s great start emanated from the midcourt, with Briana Pratt (WA), Brit Tyers (WD) and Ash Gill (C) doing a great job in the absence of Rylee Nelson. But the Seagulls seized control and were a brilliant combination in the second half. Sara Duncan (C) and Emma Iacovou (WA) seemed to have the ball on a string, feeding Jess Cox (GA) and Alex Maher (GS) with some wonderful balls into the circle. The Seagulls turned a two-goal deficit into a five-goal lead at threequarter time before running away with a 17-5 final term.
