Radio shock waves By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Radio has hit back at council for its decision to pull funding from the station. City of Casey Council voted to cease funding arrangements with Casey Radio until June 2018, citing conflict with the radio’s management for the decision. Council voted to hold funding for the radio station in abeyance and pull its membership from the radio’s board until council is satisfied management at the station improved. However, 3SER president Adrian Morton said the radio station had met all demands made by council in relation to funding. “The funding decision cannot be in any way associated with any compliance issues at South Eastern Radio Association,” Mr Morton said. “The association has been fully compliant in every area of its operations.” Mr Morton said the council had “fundamentally misunderstood” the station’s operations and the station had no obligation to abide by council’s demands. “South Eastern Radio Association is an independent not-for-profit association with revenue streams from multiple sources such as sponsors, benefactors, grants, membership fees and revenue generating projects. Casey Council funding falls into the sponsorship category,” he said. “The association is independent from sponsors or benefactors; it reserves the right to consider all recommendations without any obligations.” “It appears that Casey Council’s misunderstanding of the association’s governance structure has led to a view and recommendation that the committee of management should be sacked and replaced by paid professionals.”
“This misunderstanding has caused confusion in the discussions and relationship during funding negotiations.” Casey councillor Wayne Smith, who has been a council delegate on the radio station’s board for two years, said the radio station’s management was making decisions without input from the board. “There were decisions being made in plans to employ people, and council felt that it was reasonable management couldn’t do that without board approval and that has happened without board approval,” he said. “We are funding a not-for-profit organisation and a lot of community money is going into it, and we can’t be part of an organisation that is not open and transparent.” “The management the leadership has to consult with the board, and major decisions have to be come before the board and that hasn’t been happening.” While the current funding for Casey Radio is in limbo, both parties are willing to keep an open dialogue to continue their partnership. “We are always open to Casey Council or any other councils to approach us with funding proposals that respect the fact that we are an independent not-for-profit organisation servicing residents in many councils within the South Eastern Melbourne region,” Mr Morton said. While Cr Smith has resigned from the board of the station, he will stay on as a member of the station’s committee to oversee council recommendations. “Council hasn’t cut them adrift, and they still have to come back and prove they have a much better governance model; hopefully that will happen,” he said. “The radio station is a benefit to Casey, and we just need to make sure they are governed properly.”

Zoo trip to develop bonds of friendship By Victoria Stone-Meadows Students at Cranbourne Secondary College need some help to bring happiness to local families affected by domestic violence.
As part of their major community project, Year 12 VCAL students at Cranbourne are planning to take a number of disadvantaged families to Melbourne Zoo for the day.

Community News The City of Casey has applied for almost $10m in funding through the 2017/19 Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF) to help Council fast-track the delivery of a range of much-needed community and sporting projects.
Help drive Casey youth towards 120 hours The City of Casey is calling for volunteers to help young people learn how to drive through Council’s L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program. The program assists young people who are without support to gain their required 120 hours of driving experience.

Tech focus in China deal By Victoria Stone-Meadows Health, tourism, agriculture, innovation and education will be the focus points of Casey council’s ongoing relationship with Dujiangyan City of inland Sichuan Province of China. The council passed a recommendation to adopt a China engagement strategy without discussion at their meeting on Tuesday 15 August. The newly adopted strategy will see Casey Council bolstering relationships with Dujiangyan City in these areas and encouraging investment in the region by their Chinese counterpart. The strategy was drafted following mayor Sam Aziz and Cr Wayne Smith’s visit to China in April this year to establish an economic partnership with a Chinese sister city. The most tangible changes brought
about by the strategy will be on the innovation stage with Casey Council committing to working hand-in-hand with Chinese tech companies to bring their business to the region. As part of this strategy, council will create a Casey Cardinia Account on WeChat - the most widely used social media application in China - to engage prospective investment from Dujiangyan City in a familiar environment. The Casey-Cardinia Business Hub will have a dedicated China Desk to assist local businesses in dealing with language, cultural and business barriers. Casey Council will also establish a dedicated Chinese language investment portal that will provide information and assistance to help stakeholders secure investments in the region.
Council’s China Engagement Strategy will inform ongoing development at the Berwick Health and Education Precinct that incorporates the new St John of God Hospital, Chisholm TAFE, and Federation University. The strategy will also encourage representatives from the precinct to be involved in any future trade missions made by council to China and is included in the itinerary for any visiting Chinese delegates. Federation University will also play a major part in council’s relationship with Dujiangyan City by providing Chinese-focused courses and partnerships. Included in the strategy is the forming of an official partnership between Federation University and a Chengdubased university to support language
and cultural courses in local schools and community learning facilities. Casey Council will also audit schools in the Casey-Cardinia region to assess levels of Chinese language teaching as part of the strategy. The focus around agribusiness in the strategy will see council actively assisting local food exporters to take advantage of export opportunities to their Chinese partner. The main focus of the China Engagement Strategy in this space will have council assisting Casey-based food businesses to navigate Chinese export rules and regulations. Casey Council has outlined a whole host of ways to encourage more tourism and sport from China into the Casey Cardinia Region in the strategy. A Lantern Festival for City of Casey
to be held in the first week of October is set to be the centrepiece of council’s tourism focus of the strategy. Council will look to partner with established tourist attractions such as the Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne, Puffing Billy and the soon-to-be-revamped Gumbuya Park to specifically attract tourism from China. They will also look into utilising Casey Fields as a resource for Chinese sports teams in their off-seasons and look at sporting exchange programs for athletes between Casey and Dujiangyan City. Further to their own China Engagement Strategy, Casey Council has also committed to working closely with state and federal governments into the future to establish closer economic ties to China.
Bunjil entertains in city fashion By Victoria Stone-Meadows As the opening day for council’s behemoth Bunjil Place project looms on the horizon, tickets have gone on sale for the first performances to be held in the brand new venue. Shows for adults and kids will see big names in the Australian entertainment industry take the stage in the opening months of Bunjil Place. Tickets are available to see funny man Sammy J in his hilarious autobiographical stage show ‘Hero Complex’ on Thursday 9 November. In the show reflecting his reallife experiences, Sammy J abandons his law degree to travel the world and sing funny songs for a living. Sammy J said he was excited to be one of the first comedians to perform at Bunjil Place. “I look forward to sharing a great night with the locals,” he said. “I’m also honoured that they created an entire new entertainment space just for my performance. As I said to the mayor, you can’t put a price on laughter.” Australian comedic Royalty Dave O’Neil will be bringing his biggest hits to Bunjil Place on Thursday 14 December with tickets on sale now. International guests are also on the menu with the US-based Glenn Miller Orchestra bring their unique brand of swing music to Bunjil on Tuesday 31 October.
Fun for all ages will be on offer when Room on the Broom comes to town with music, laughs and scary fun for kids aged three and up. The team behind The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child will be bringing their stage show to Bunjil on Thursday 2 November. Amazing Amazon eco experience By Brendan Rees Former Lyndhurst Secondary College captain Matt Cooper is preparing to embark on a life-changing journey. The 18-year-old has signed up to a humanitarian project where he will travel to remote villages in the Amazon rainforest next January to help communities that lack basic school facilities and hygiene. Matt shared his ‘Road Less Travelled’ story with Lyndhurst Secondary College students on 28 July. Matt’s passion to help people inspired him to sign up with Volunteer Eco Students Abroad in what he says will not only be an adventure but also hands-on. “I was sitting in biology (class) one day, and they came around with pamphlets, and I thought I could see myself doing that,” he said. “I always wanted to help people. I’m doing charity work, and I thought volunteer work would be good. I didn’t think about doing it so soon, but it popped up and I thought why not.” Matt, currently studying a Bachelor of Science at Victoria University, said the project was a great opportunity to not only experience South America and Ecuador but also help address the social and environmental issues impacting the communities. “I wanted to go on a holiday at the end of the year, and I thought why not go on a holiday and help people,” he said. He said he and other volunteers would teach English to children and rebuild homes damaged by stormwater. “We’ll be fixing some of the huts and laying pipelines. A lot of it is about sani-

Picture: CONTRIBUTED tation and building water catchments because they do get quite stormy weather in the village huts,” he said. “A lot of people get sick because they don’t have good medical procedures like Australia does. If you can prevent them from getting sick with something as simple as washing your hands with clean water and not drinking dirty water, it’ll go a long way,” he said. Matt will travel for 23 days living under a mosquito net and explore the famous rugged Andes mountain, hike two volcanoes, and visit the Pacific Coast where he will experience some of the most unique wildlife endemic to Ecuador and the
Galapagos Islands. He will also have the chance to go whale watching and hike the pristine coast line. Matt said he was fortunate to book his trip, thanks to sponsorship from Lyndhurst Secondary College and his employer Plasta Masta’s. Matt said he had already begun talking to other volunteers on Facebook where they have agreed to put small packs of coloured pencils and books together to hand out to children in the villages. “We do it a lot easier in Australia, so we’ll be going over there helping the village people. I’m very excited,” he said.
Zoo trip for bonding From page 1 One of the project organisers Sene Smalley said the class was dedicated to helping families in the community overcome and heal with a worry-free day of bonding. “We chose our topic about family issues, and we are focusing on children who are affected by domestic violence and things like that,” he said. “Our plan is to take the kids and their families to the Melbourne Zoo for a positive day out and give them a chance to forget their worries and bond as families.” “We hope it will be a really great experience for kids and their parents.” Student Neale Reilly has been liaising with local primary schools to identify students and their families who need a fun day out. “I have been working closely with contacts at local primary schools; going out to and having meetings with wellbeing co-ordinators,” he said. “I have been asking if they have students who may have been affected by domestic violence or whose families have separated, and majority of the schools want to help out.” “Most of the wellbeing co-ordinators are saying it’s a great idea and happy to be involved.” Student Skye White said the class came up with a number of suggestions to help people in the community before settling on a trip to the zoo. “We had about 10 ideas, and we narrowed down to three that were all related to each other that all branched from what people are all passionate about which is helping people in the area,” she said. The class has worked together
to organise transport, entry into the zoo for up to 75 people, navigated legal obstacles such as privacy and insurance, but have hit a major snag with the budget. The class was given a working budget of $1500 for its project, but needs a little more to make the project a reality, and is workshopping fund-raising ideas. Skye said they had investigated a number of ways to generate donations for the project, and were hoping by letting the community know about their project, they can find a funding partner. “We have $1500 for our budget, but have reached it just with entry tickets to the zoo,” she said. “We are trying to get donations to get it off the ground, and we are trying to work out ideas of what we can do for more fund-raising.” The students are hoping that if they can get this project up and running, they will be able to bring some light into the lives of local people who need it the most. “We want to raise awareness for the issue and make it so people know it is a thing and people are suffering as well as give families a day out they deserve,” Skye said. “We want to affect positively for them and us as students a chance to see how we can help and how we as members of the community can drive a positive impact.” The students are attempting to have the trip organised before the end of term on Friday 22 September with a view to holding the event on Thursday 12 October. Clyde woman killed in two-car collision It is understood her car clipped another car that was attempting to turn onto the highway. Police said it appeared the woman’s car was pushed into a trafficlight pole before spinning out-ofcontrol across the north-bound lanes of the highway.

Police are seeking information about an alleged burglary in Lyndhurst back in February. They released CCTV images of two men who might be able to assist with their inquiries and appealed for anyone with information to come forward. Police allege two men broke into a locked garage in Caribbean Pine Court between 7pm on 22 February and 8am on 23 February, and stole wallets and credit cards from the victim’s vehicle. Someone later that night they used one of the credit cards to spend $250 at a nearby petrol station. The men in the CCTV are perceived to be Caucasian in appearance and were wearing black hoodies with black baseball caps at the time of the offence. Two charged after dawn drugs raid Police want By Victoria Stone-Meadows burglary help A Hampton Park man and a young woman have been arrested after police raided a property on Waverley Park Drive in Cranbourne on Friday 18 August. Detectives from the Dandenong Divisional Response Unit executed a search warrant on the property at about 6am. The 20-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with a number of offences including trafficking methamphetamine as well as possessing methamphetamine, ecstasy and cannabis, He is also facing two charges of theft of a motor vehicle, three counts of possessing proceeds of crime and committing an indictable offence while on bail. A 17-year-old girl was also arrested at property and has been charged on summons for drug possession. Police seized items from the property in the course of the raid including a trail motorbike and a road motorbike. Police also removed quantities of illicit drugs from the property including methamphetamine, ecstasy, cannabis as well as an amount of cash.

A 51-year-old woman from Clyde North is the latest victim of the Victorian Road toll after being killed in a car crash in South Dandenong. Police said the woman and another female passenger were traveling on the South Gippsland Highway at the Pound Road intersection, about 5.30pm, on Sunday 27 August.

I replied that growth and underemployment are public issues that are interconnected and impacting on the south-eastern area. But according to Robyn Hale, it is not appropriate to place them on the agenda of Luke Donnellan’s pending public meeting, even though I was invited to do so. This meeting is, therefore, not really about listening to the concerns of local people, in public, it’s about promoting failed Labor Party policies and Luke Donnellan. In my opinion, Luke Donnellan should now follow Judith Graley’s decision and not seek to stand again for the state seat of Narre Warren North. Both Judith Graley and Luke Donnellan appear to believe that the only policy solution for problems created by high growth is more and more infrastructure. Wrong. Melbourne (and Casey) does not have to have the highest rate of population growth in Australia, especially when it impacts the quality of life for existing residents and an economy already operating below capacity. Rotary strikes gold in Cranbourne By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Rotary Club of Cranbourne celebrated their golden anniversary having made valuable contributions to the community for 50 years. The Rotary Club has spearheaded many projects and initiatives in the community including developing parks and playgrounds and helping to drive the fund-raising that enabled the construction of the original swimming pool in Cranbourne. Members have replaced floors in public halls and Scout halls, replaced the roof of the public hall, and provided an ambulance for St John and equipment for local fire brigades, and of course cooked tens of thousands of sausages for a range of events and causes. As well as aiding the upgrade and betterment of community facilities, the Rotary club has improved the lives of many of the residents of Cranbourne. The club has helped individuals obtain special wheelchairs and constructed ramps for access so everyone can access community facilities. They have sponsored young members of the community to attend Science Summer Schools, to participate in exchange programs to overseas countries and to attend personal development programs conducted by Rotary. Never ones to shy away from a challenge, the Rotary Club of Cranbourne even built and then sold a house in Narre Warren South to donate $160,000 to The Alfred hospital for the pur-

Casey has an animal abuse problem according to the RSPCA, whose statistics show the area is the second-highest in the state for animal cruelty reports. In the 2016/17 financial year, 435 reports of animal cruelty were made to the RSPCA in the City of Casey out of the 10,180 across the state. The only local government area with more reports of animal cruelty in the 2016/17 financial year was Greater Geelong with 584 reports. Included in the reports from the Casey area were 199 reports of animals with insufficient food, water or shelter and 136 concerns about hygiene, grooming and housing conditions. Other reports made to the RSPCA about animals in Casey were about underweight animals, sick or injured animals not receiving vet treatment, animals being beaten or wounded and abandoned animals. According to the RSPCA both the City of Casey and Greater Geelong had 69 reports of animals being beaten, wounded, tormented or otherwise terrified. Dogs, cats and horses were found to be the animals most likely to be abused or mistreated in the Casey area. 2016/17 statistics show 255 of the reports from Casey involved dogs and puppies, 64 involved cats and kittens and 67

The City of Casey had only marginally improved in animal welfare from the 2015-’16 financial year, when the region had the highest number of reports in the state. RSPCA VictoriaCEO Dr Liz Walker said more owners were reported to the RSPCA for not meeting their animals’ basic needs than any other concern. “It’s disappointing to see that, for the second year in a row, too many Victorian animals were reported to us because of concerns about very basic issues,” she said. “Food, water, shelter and vet care when they’re sick or in-
jured; these kinds of problems are so preventable.” However, Dr Walker said a majority of the cases bought to the RSPCA are quickly resolved after a visit from their inspectors. “Concerns reported to us are quickly resolved by our Inspectors educating the owner or person in charge of the animals involved, and reminding them of their legal obligations to care for their animals,” she said. “This year, RSPCA Victoria has started working more closely with local councils to understand local animal welfare issues, and to put in place tailored local initiatives to educate owners and better protect animals.”

Focus on student authors By Brendan Rees St Peter’s College Year 12 VCAL students have celebrated the launch of books they have published. The VCAL students read their books to Grade 2 students of St Therese’s Primary School in Cranbourne North on Tuesday 29 August. St Peter’s College principal Chris Black said he was impressed with the self-written and published books, aimed for primary school children, as part of their Sustainable Development Goals Project for Literacy. He said VCAL students had

to research the history of the sustainable development goals and select one goal as an area of focus. “Students then began planning a story focused on the chosen goal. The stories and drawings were all original ideas created by the VCAL students.” Mr Black said the students were inspired to write and publish their books. “We strive for all students to feel a keen sense of belonging, where a sense of hope and purpose permeates, with the skillset to contribute positively to society,” Mr Black said. “Our core business is learn-
ing. We will continue to strive to cater for all students, the highachieving student, for those with special talents, those with particular needs and those who wish to pursue a vocational pathway,” he said. Mr Black said sustainable development goals were developed in 2016 when the UN (United Nations) adapted the original Millennium Goals from 2000 to develop a new sustainable development agenda. There are 17 sustainable goals in total, but the primary focus across all the goals is to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all, worldwide.

The ATO is reminding taxpayers that it’s paying close attention to rental properties located in popular holiday destinations around Australia. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that last year the ATO identified a large number of mistakes with deductions for rental properties, particularly with regards to holiday homes. “We’ve noticed some people are claiming deductions for holiday homes even where the property is not genuinely being rented out, or genuinely available for rent,” Ms Anderson said. “There’s no problem with people using their rental property for their holiday, but holiday home owners need to remember they can only claim tax deductions for expenses made during a period when the home is rented out or genuinely available for rent.” Property owners also need to understand that if they rent their property at a discounted rate, or ‘mates’ rates’ they can only claim deductions equal to the amount of rent charged. Ms Anderson said the ATO is focused on using data to identify errors. “Property owners should be aware that incorrect rental property claims will not go unnoticed. Technology enhancements and extensive use of data is allowing us to identify incorrect or suspicious claims. We also have a good idea of the locations likely to be used for holiday homes.” Ms Anderson said that all rental property owners, particular those who rent out holiday homes, should always double-check their claims before lodging their tax return, and follow a couple of simple rules. “Firstly, make sure that you declare all rental income and only claim deductions for periods that the property is rented or was genuinely available for rent.” “Secondly, make sure you have accurate records of expenses, and strong evidence of the property being rented or genuinely available for rent at market rates. “Advertising through a real-estate agent or an online site is not always enough evidence to demonstrate that a property is genuinely available for rent.”

Moving into their new home on 7 June this year, Miriama and Paul Sasa, along with their four kids, have spent just over two months enjoying their single-storey, four-bedroom, double-garage home in Cranbourne West. Their home was built by Officer-based building company RMS Homes, which Miriama discovered through social media and immediately warmed to. “We prayed for the right direction and one day we were on Facebook and I saw (RMS Homes),” Miriama said. “As soon as I saw them I grabbed the number and called. The moment we met in Officer we knew by faith it was from God that we’d discovered them.” Dealing with the managing director Mat Suckling, Miriama stated that the easy process put forward by RMS homes along with their flexibility and willingness to work with the Sasas made their eight-month construction process a breeze. “We went through (some of the larger building companies) but they just had so many hurdles you had to go through and having four kids it was too much,” Miriama said. “Whereas dealing with RMS homes was simple and straightforward ... they were so professional. They were always following up with us; even after the first meeting they never left us hanging. I felt like I was already a part of the family.” RMS Homes was established in 2013 to help first home buyers, up-sellers, downsellers, investors and multi-unit developers find an adequate solution to their housing needs. And as Miriama explained, with all her housing requirements more than taken care of, her family is the envy of all their friends,

The wisdom of the ages By Victoria Stone-Meadows Generations of wisdom was passed on at Tooradin Primary school last week as grandparents were celebrated at the school during Book Week 2017. Grandparents and friends of students were welcomed to the school on Thursday 17 August to participate in book week activities including quizzes, a paper plane challenge and sharing in favourite stories. Stanton joins Stars By Russell Bennett Garfield is the first side in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition to make a senior coaching change for 2018, with Hayden Stanton replacing former player-coach Joel Morgan at the helm at Beswick Street. Stanton, who has previously coached at Officer, Mulgrave, Doveton, the Monash Blues, and South Belgrave, this year served as the Under 19s coach at Noble Park and the defensive coach for Mick Fogarty’s senior side. He said he’d had an interest in coaching the Stars since he and his family lived in Garfield years ago. “Always in the back of my mind I’ve wanted to coach the club,” he said. “I really enjoy the company of the people there and I thought that if there was ever a club in the outer fringe, that’d be the one I’d look at.” Garfield finished the inaugural WGFNC season in eighth on the ladder with five wins and 13 losses, but Stanton sees plenty to be optimistic about in both the near and long-term future. The Stars will be active in recruitment - looking for a spearhead up forward and more quality through the engine room - but central to Stanton’s planning will be the club’s young brigade. “I talked about bringing a stronger, bigger focus around club discipline and structure without it being too mechanical,” Stanton said about his meetings with the Stars so far. “I talked with them about strategy and set-ups, and opportunity as a non-playing coach to see the game evolve and make the necessary changes throughout it. “We want to collectively drive standards around the place, but now that we’ve had a year and seen that the competition has good viability for the club, we want to be stronger again with a real emphasis on player development when it comes to the young kids. “We want to really focus on teaching them and not throwing too many of them in there when they can’t cope with it. “At Garfield we’ve got a lot of natural pace and talent but defensively, and probably physically, we’re not very strong so when we were challenged in games this year we might have been in for a quarter or two, when the whips were cracking we were found wanting. “We’ve certainly got to try and manufacture the right game plan that suits the way we need to play in that
Former Officer and Doveton coach Hayden Stanton has signed on at Garfield for 2018. 79542 competition.” The Stars have lost the Payne boys - Tyson and Darcy - for next season, in addition to 2017 recruit and playingassistant Jarryd Drew. Each of them has moved interstate, but the club looks set to retain Morgan as a player. Gun ruckman Tom Marsh is another key component that the Stars will be looking to hold on to next season, and to play more regularly. “You put Tom Marsh full-time in our side, recruit three or four gun players and develop your kids in the preseason you’re going to win another five or six games minimum,” Stanton said. “They won five this year so that’s going to put you in that bottom part of the (top) five.” Stanton and the Stars are realistic
on their expectations for 2018, but see incredible potential throughout their playing stocks. “I think the untapped ability is there and that we need to structure that in the right way - setting up a program and a process where I think guys will naturally develop and evolve,” he said. “The club has that junior base pushing through all the time so our points won’t seem to be an issue like it may be for other clubs going forward. “We’ll have a strong mindset on being really composed centre-back, and really electric centre-forward. We’ll move the ball to our forwards, but we’ll also learn how to defend the ground better. “There’s no excuses for us not to get the best out of our group. For people who are looking at maybe coming to
this competition - we are a destination club.” Garfield Football Director John White said the club did its due diligence during the interview process and Stanton “came highly recommended from everyone we spoke to”. “He knows his footy and how to get the best out of people,” he said. “He’s already done his preparation and homework on the playing group and presented to us a really good plan for the future - not just on game day, but for the culture and growth of the club too.” One of Garfield’s existing drawcards when it comes to player recruitment is the quality of its Beswick Street ground - one of the best playing surfaces that the Gazette’s Football liftout covers.
Clubs, governing body at loggerheads Fractious MPNFL clubs will withdraw their request for a special general meeting to remove AFL South East as their governing body after a meeting of the MPNFL clubs on Tuesday night. AFLSE informed the clubs that their request did not comply with the rules and, as a consequence, would not convene the meeting as originally requested. The clubs have until 5pm, Friday 1 September, to withdraw their request for the meeting.
The News understands the disgruntled MPNFL clubs will still challenge AFLSE’s final recommendation to have a full-divisional structure in place between the Nepean, Peninsula and South East Football Netball League’s in 2019. The disgruntled MPNFL clubs want nothing to do with the SEFNL clubs under a divisional structure. But the remaining MPNFL clubs are open to the concept, as are the SEFNL clubs who held a meeting at Bea-
consfield on Saturday to discuss the way forward. Cranbourne president Shane Baker chaired the meeting and is still confident a full-divisional structure will go ahead, and maybe as early as 2018. “We’ve been open and honest from the start, that we are united and open to anything that will assist in the betterment of football and netball in the region,” Baker said. “We’re not giving up on this. We
know AFL South East has released plans for a full divisional structure in 2019, but as a collective we’re still pushing for 2018. We think there are some great opportunities to grow, and it will be even better if those opportunities present themselves next year.” While the disgruntled MPNFL clubs are still steadfast in their resolve, a small collective of the remaining clubs is open to the idea of hitting the negotiating table with both AFLSE and the SEFNL clubs.
Redbacks back league change By David Nagel Hampton Park president Mick O’Brien is confident his club will return to its glory days after its members voted 88-7 to make the move from the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) to the Southern Football League (SFL) in 2018. The Redbacks have had sand kicked in their face since the beginning of 2012, winning just four of 96 games, and were relying on their governing body - AFL South East - to implement a full divisional structure between the three leagues under its governance. But the full divisional structure to take place between Nepean, Peninsula and SEFNL - will be delayed for 12 months and phased in for the 2019 season. The Redbacks just can’t afford to wait any longer, with AFLSE previously suggesting that divisional football would be in place as early as this season. “We would have loved to have stayed in SEFNL, which would have been our ideal scenario going forward, to play divisional football with Nepean and Peninsula, and keep some of our local rivalries,” O’Brien explained. “But it’s been a tough road. We were promised divisional football for 2018 and now that’s just another broken promise. We just can’t keep getting belted the way we have been, it’s not good for the club, not good for our members, and certainly not good for morale.” O’Brien said SFL CEO David Cannizzo had been supportive about making the move. The SFL board will meet on Monday 11 September where it will vote on Hampton Park’s application. “The most likely scenario is that we find ourselves in division two, and that’s a standard that we’re comfortable we’ll be competitive in going forward,” O’Brien explained. “At the end of the day, we just want to enjoy our footy again and move forward in a competition structure that’s suits where we are at right now. “This year it was difficult to recruit, we spoke to 80 players and didn’t get one across the line, but already we’ve had interest in players returning for next year. We’ve got good supporters, but some have left because of the massive losing margins each week, and some of those have already committed as well.” O’Brien said it had been a tough conclusion to come to, considering the historical connection with SEFNL clubs and having a netball club that was comfortable in its current environment. “It’s been difficult for the netballers because they’ve put so much time and effort in to what they’ve been doing as well,” O’Brien said. “But this is not just about football, and not just about netball, it’s about a whole club perspective and doing what’s best for it going forward.” Hampton Park still has a few hoops to jump through, with its existing affiliates - AFLSE and SEFNL - and the SFL all needing to approve their application.

Demons celebrate a finals spot By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 19 The incredible home record of Casey continued on Saturday night, with the Demons finishing in fourth spot after a gritty 15-point win over Werribee. With both sides needing to win for their own finals ambitions, the Demons - who have now finished the home-andaway season with an undefeated record at home, professionally curtailed a fired-up Tigers team. An Angus Scott goal only two minutes into the match gave the Dees the early jump, before holding onto their lead at quarter time by eight-points. Scott - combined with the likes of ball magnet Ben Kennedy, Corey Maynard and rangy forward Bailey Fritsch, ran hard both ways in the second quarter to kick four goals to two and take a vital 21-point lead at half time. Light rain set in across Casey Fields throughout, and the Tigers clawed their way back into the contest. A six-goal third term to the visitors saw the margin slowly reduce, leaving the critical clash in the balance heading into the last quarter. Coach Justin Plapp asked his side to respond and do what they need to do to win - and they did. “I put a lot on our leaders,” Plapp said. “There was nothing going to
be pretty about the last quarter. “There were some really big individual efforts late in the game ... critical contests where they just needed to go and they did. “Everyone did their bit when they needed to ... and we had enough contributors when it counted.” Despite holding on to claim the four points and the double chance, Plapp said the opposition gave them a stern test. “I think there was a fair bit of pressure on the night, they (Werribee) were playing for everything,” Plapp said. “I thought they were super and you’ve got to give credit where credit’s due. “We had a fair bit to play for as well, but the way they performed with their pressure and attitude to compete was brilliant. “I can’t give them enough praise, but we just did what we needed to do.” Jack Trengove, Josh Wagner and Declan Keilty played fantastic games for the Dees and were named among the best, while AFL-bound Fritsch kicked three goals. The Demons face Williamstown at Burbank Oval on Saturday in the qualifying final. Meanwhile, in the Development League, the Casey Demons absolutely belted Werribee, 23.13(151) to 4.3(27). They face Port Melbourne at Box Hill City Oval in this Sunday’s qualifying final.

VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - WOMEN'S REVIEW - ROUND 14 After a tough and gruelling last three months, Cranbourne now finally has the chance to reset itself under the new merger with the Casey Demons and Melbourne Football Club. In their last VFL match as the Eagles, Cranbourne stood no chance in an 84-point thumping to the fourth-placed St Kilda, a side gearing up for a finals campaign. The signs were ominous early, with St Kilda banging on their first three goals in 15 minutes, before storming out to a commanding 27-point lead at quarter time. Another five goals to the Sharks in the second saw the lead increase to almost 60-points, with the Eagles simply unable to match them in the contest. The margin looked set to be over three figures early in the final quarter, with the Sharks leading 90-0, before a goal to Cranbourne’s Nicole Garner meant the margin wouldn’t blow out any further. There were positives for the Eagles however - skipper Kirsten McLeod enjoyed another strong game in an excellent second half of the season, Garner provided a presence, Holly Whitford took further steps in her development and Breann Moody was consistent all game. Eagles’ finals dare By David Nagel Berwick and Cranbourne will battle for the first ticket to the South East Football Netball League grand final after the Eagles rolled arch-rival Narre Warren in Saturday’s qualifying final at Holm Park Reserve. Costly turnovers hampered the Eagles in the first half, but a brilliant second-half display - where they kept the most potent forward line in the competition to just three points - saw them waltz away with victory. Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey was a very proud man after the match, praising his side for its relentless pressure over four quarters. “I’m super proud of the boys, I think we’ve been building and building to something like this and finals football is all about pressure,” Goosey said. “You only play good sides in finals, so to keep a good side to no goals after half time was extremely pleasing. Shaun Marusic’s smother, Maxy (Gearon) did a tonne of work through the midfield and Cheekers (Ryan Davey) responded well after getting a bit of a bake at half time. I couldn’t be prouder of that effort.” The Magpies led by six points at half time, but the Eagles played inspired football in the second half, not allowing the Magpies any breathing space with a relentless brand of pressure perfectly suited to finals football. The Magpies began to turn over the footy, with players like Marusic, Mat Fletcher, Davey and Gearon providing a pacy forward line with ample supply of the ball. Zak Roscoe kicked two third-quarter goals, backed up by another to Luke BeeHugo, before two to Ryan Jones, and another to Marc Holt put the issue to bed in the final term. Roscoe finished with four for the Eagles, Jones three and Holt two,
while Brandon Osborne added another scalp to his outstanding collection by keeping Magpie sharpshooter Nick Scanlon to no goals. Aaron Wilson was dangerous early for the Magpies, kicking four, while Michael Collins and Jordyn Flannery were solid over four quarters. The Magpies will take on Beaconsfield in Sunday’s first semi-final at Berwick after Leigh McQuillen’s team ended Doveton’s season in the elimination final. The young Eagles - burdened by the loss of star ruckman Scott Meyer and emerging midfielder Connor Guley - frustrated Doveton in the first half, before unleashing three goals in three minutes at the start of the third to earn their advance. And it’s the third consecutive year that the Eagles have ended Doveton’s season at this juncture. Troy McDermott finished with four for the winners, Riley Verbi three and Lachie Modica two, while Michael Misso and Daniel Galante played starring roles through the midfield. Fill-in ruckman Jordy Roberts was brave and resilient against Russell Gabriel, who was still Doveton’s best performed player. Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman is confident his team will translate its all-conquering season into a silverware-winning September. “It’s a bit cliched, but I think we’ve continually got better as the season has unfolded, we’ve improved on a weekly basis and made some tweaks recently that I think will hold us in really good stead,” Kemperman said ahead of this week’s big clash. “I’ve also got confidence that the week’s rest will help us; it’s given us the opportunity to put some work into some players to try and have everyone hitting their straps at the precisely the right time.”

Doves downed in sweet revenge By David Nagel The old saying goes that a week is a long time in football - well we can add netball to that vernacular after Cranbourne produced a stunning turnaround against Doveton in Sunday’s elimination final at Berwick. Even on face value the Eagles 45-32 victory over the Doves was impressive, but when you take into consideration that Donna Wilson and her side were coming off a 28-47 loss to the Doves in round 18 - well it gives even more substance to the win. Sure the Doves were without their number-one strike weapon Rahni Samason, who was playing in a grand final for Heatherton, but Wilson was still circumspect taking a five-goal lead into the final quarter. “No matter who is on the court, Doveton is a very good side and they’ve done it to us before, coming from behind to beat us,” Wilson said. Cranbourne started impressively, opening up a 10-5 lead at the first break, with Alanah Hardy (goal attack) on fire and Tara Cecil (goal keeper) and Sharni Lambden (goal defence) proving tough nuts to crack in defence. The Eagles retained that five-goal lead until three-quarter time before opening up the turbo boosters with a 14-6 final term. Midcourters Nat Sparks (wing attack) and Darcy O’Donnell (wing defence) were amazing, but it was the impact of captain Steph Ryan (centre) that gave the Eagles the biggest boost heading in to the contest. The skipper was cleared to play by her physio on Thursday night, ending an agonising stint on the sidelines. “Steph has been injured for nine weeks and the plan was to always bring her back for this weekend,” Wilson said. “It’s hard to explain what she means to this
team, she’s the captain and having her back lifted the girls unbelievably. They’ve all been through the journey with Steph and the whole mentality changed with her back on the court. “She’s basically done nothing for the entire nine weeks, but she’s an incredibly fit person, and I’m not surprised by what she produced on the weekend. Having her back really switched the girls on.” Doveton should be proud of its efforts, with players like Shae Gee (GS), Chelsea Imanisani (GA), Hayley Stewart (C) and Liz Edwards (GK) working hard to narrow the gap in the second term. But this was Cranbourne’s day, who will head back to Berwick this Sunday for a cut-throat eliminator against Beaconsfield. Beacy will need to regroup after wasting a fast start against Tooradin in Saturday’s qualifying final at Holm Park Reserve. Beacy led by two goals at the first two breaks before the Seagulls well and truly clicked into gear, scoring 30-11 after half time to score a runaway 50-33 triumph. Beaconsfield’s great start emanated from the midcourt, with Briana Pratt (WA), Brit Tyers (WD) and Ash Gill (C) doing a great job in the absence of Rylee Nelson. But the Seagulls seized control and were a brilliant combination in the second half. Sara Duncan (C) and Emma Iacovou (WA) seemed to have the ball on a string, feeding Jess Cox (GA) and Alex Maher (GS) with some wonderful balls into the circle. The Seagulls turned a two-goal deficit into a five-goal lead at threequarter time before running away with a 17-5 final term. Kelly Andrews and her side now face the massive challenge of conquering Narre Warren who toyed with the Seagulls in round 18. Defenders
