Casey’s future The City of Casey adopted its 2017-21 Council Plan in June, which outlines the way Council will work towards achieving its ambitious vision to create Australia’s most liveable city. The Plan will guide the work of Council over the next four years and outlines eight strategic objectives, how Council will achieve these and how their progress will be measured. City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz said the Council’s vision is for Casey to become the envy of the nation. “Based on our community’s priorities, we’ve developed a new Council Plan and long-term Council Vision which outlines how we’re going to work towards securing Casey’s future,� Cr Aziz said.
“The Council Plan was informed by Casey’s biggest ever community engagement exercises, the Casey People’s Panel and Casey Next. “Through these forums residents indicated their priorities for the future of Casey, and Council responded. “We have incorporated our community’s feedback into our strategic documents which determine the way forward over the next four years and beyond.�

Construction of the gridshell began in May this year and is tipped to be complete by the end of August.
Earlier this month, the cenotaph was relocated from its former site in front of the Civic Centre to the Bunjil Place landscape. The Narre Warren Library is busy preparing for their relocation to the new Bunjil Place library, which is tipped to be one of the most visited features of the precinct.

If the anticipation of visiting Bunjil Place isn’t enough, a world of virtual reality could rival the excitement of the real thing with a Bunjil Placemaker game set to ignite imaginations across Casey. Bunjil Place Gallery artist Troy Innocent and gamers will unite as the Let’s Play exhibition is prepared to be launched this summer at Bunjil Place. Troy’s work will be exhibited in a static gallery exhibition and he will also introduce Bunjil Placemaker which will bring various locations throughout the City of Casey into the game world. Troy explained that these nominated locations, including Bunjil Place, will have an urban code built JOUP UIFJS GFBUVSF LOPXO BT AXBZ mOEFST UIBU CSJOH the location into the game - transforming ordinary MBOENBSLT JOUP UIF mDUJPOBM XPSME “Gamers will be able to go on an urban code making adventure around Bunjil Place,� he said. “As a result at the end of the exploration you have tokens in your phone which you can use to build your own digital place within the City of Casey, which others can add to and modify.
As the anticipation builds for the launch of the game this December, players don’t have to wait until then to get involved. “We want people to be part of its creation as well as the development of spaces,� Troy said. “The City of Casey has a diverse mix of zones, so we’re putting the word out there for people to submit interesting places within Casey and nominate these to be part of the game.� The public will also have the chance to participate in workshops and beta testing in the lead up to the launch of the game, which will happen in conjunction with the opening of the Let’s Play exhibition. Troy, who is a lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology, said he’s excited for visitors to get involved and said there will be a public test in October before its release later this year. volleyball, badminton, wheelchair sports and more. The redevelopments to the major sporting complex will cement the centre’s position in the community and beyond as a much desired and much needed sporting outlet for community members both young and old. The YMCA will be responsible for the management of the centre which will continue to cater for a range of different sports.
Cricket lanes will also make up part of the second stage of redevelopment.

Four Oaks Ward Cr Rosalie Crestani was joined by the Hon Luke Donnellan MP, State Member for Narre Warren North, to reopen the pavilion following extensive upgrades to the community facility. The major investment demonstrates Council’s commitment to improving community sports facilities. The upgrades to the pavilion included the renewal of current change room facilities to include female friendly amenities, new public toilets including male and female external toilets and an all abilities toilet and shower. The kitchen was also upgraded to include new equipment, cabinetry and benches as well as new storage space, and a new paved spectator’s area was also laid in front of the pavilion. The redevelopment will assist the Endeavour Hills Junior Football Club, Hallam Kolara Park Cricket Club and the Saint Patrick Knights Cricket Club who all utilise this facility.

Sam Childers at first didn’t like the moniker ‘Machine Gun Preacher’. It was a title given to the charismatic missionary during an uncomplimentary story in the US press, he told an enraptured audience of 800plus students and staff at Lighthouse Christian College, Cranbourne, on 23 August. He said God told him to “claim the name“. It would be a marketing tool in which to share his testimony across the world, he said. It led to a clothing line, a motorcycle brand and a biographical Hollywood film. But the US-born preacher now lives in Africa and leads Angels of East Africa aid group which provides 12,000 meals a day and houses 380 orphaned children. “God can take something that’s stupid and take it clean to the top if you’re willing to stand up for Jesus Christ.” Still, people think he’s “some crazy guy with a gun”, he told students. “What does a preacher do with a machine gun? Well it’s good for offerings,” he joked. He often gets asked about his “kill count” as a missionary that rescued children from rebel forces in Africa’s war zones. “In all my years in Africa, I never talk about violence. Violence doesn’t glorify Jesus Christ,” Mr Childers said. “If I boast about something, I talk about what Jesus Christ has done for me. “Guns are only good in good men’s hands like a police officer or the military.” Mr Childers was visiting as part of his six-week tour of Australia, including stops at churches and schools in
their stance against drugs. He testified to getting led down that path at 11 years old, even while raised in a “born-again spirit family”. He left school early being unable to read and write. “It’s so easy to get messed up in life. We think the life we’re living isn’t cool enough. “We look up to kids we shouldn’t be looking up to. “The coolest thing you can do in life is not make any bad decisions like I did.” So many of his friends died from drugs, some killed in car crashes involving drugs and alcohol. His own son “let his guard down” and experimented with drugs on a weekend. He fatally overdosed. “A lot of teenagers think it’s OK to experiment with drugs. It’s not OK.” He realised he needed to turn his life around after being nearly killed in a bar-fight in his early twenties. “The first thing I had to do was get into a church. I gave my life to the Lord and he gave me a second chance in life.” He urged students to be thankful for what had been given to them. That it was easy to neglect the blessings of pure water, food and school facilities that children in other parts of the world did not have. Nor to forget that his own schools in Uganda and South Sudan require security guards. “You’re so safe here. You don’t need the army or policemen to guard your school.” Mr Childers said he didn’t miss anything while he was in Africa. “But when I’m here, I miss my children. I’m already counting the days for when I get home (to Africa).”

A man accused of armed robbery has been arrested by police detectives in a Fountain Gate shopping centre car park. The 24-year-old Dandenong North man has been charged with 16 offences in Melbourne’s South-East over a two-week period, police say. The charges also include aggravated burglary, theft and weapon offences committed between 20 July and 2 August. The man was arrested by Casey CIU detectives about 1pm on 15 August. Police then seized property while executing two search warrants in Dandenong North and Dandenong. The man was remanded in custody and expected to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 16 August.

Goodbye ‘toxic’ politics By Cam Lucadou-Wells Outgoing Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley says she’s proud of her legacy but won’t miss the “toxicity” of today’s politics. Ms Graley says she was overwhelmed by a long list of Facebook well-wishers soon after she posted her decision on 19 August not to seek reelection. Since then, Treasurer Tim Pallas feted her with flowers in her parliamentary office and Premier Daniel Andrews took her aside to wish her well, she says. Days before, when she rang Mr Andrews to tell him, he said: “That’s not the news I wanted to hear.” Ms Graley says her decision to end her 12-year tenure was her own. Like Western Bulldogs great Bob Murphy, she didn’t have enough “petrol” in the tank to commit to another four-year term. “Politics is a really hard gig. It takes 110 per cent of your effort. “I’d feel I’d be letting people down if I couldn’t do that.” With ALP pre-selection for the seat set to start in September, it was best to declare her hand early, she said. “I’ve been contemplating it for a little while,” she said. “It was becoming difficult to pretend I hadn’t made the decision.” She plays down the “beat-up” of her three-page report into a taxpayerfunded international trip into a possible boutique museum in Melbourne in 2015. It tells of a politics that is “a lot more toxic than it used to be”. “People are much more cruel ... on both sides. “There’s a damaging view on politicians. It’s been fed by social media and it’s not helping to preserve a good

There is also the removal of a level crossing and upgrade of Thompsons Road, and the start of a Casey Hospital re-development to come, she says. Ms Graley is proud of $1 billion of roads being built in her electorate as well as nine new schools during her three terms. Still more infrastructure, particularly roads, are sorely needed in the fast-growing South-East. “I understand the frustration and the anger and talk to that all the time and
relay it to the Treasurer. “It’s almost like the growth is so incredibly quick that infrastructure lags behind it.” Ms Graley says the government was playing “catch-up” after four “lost” years of the previous Liberal State Government. In that term, “not one road was completed, not one school built and there was not one upgrade to our schools,” she said.
As parliamentary education secretary, she also plans to keep rolling out the schools Respectful Relationships program to tackle family violence. After the 2018 state election, Ms Graley intends to continue being an advocate for education and women. With her children getting married, buying a house and starting a business, she is also set to deliver “free labour from Mum”. “I look forward to doing that again.”

A 26-year-old man was “ambushed” when he was fatally shot in the driveway of a Narre Warren house on 16 August, police say. Neighbours of the Kurrajong Road house say they were shocked by the shooting in the quiet estate. The man died at the scene, unable to be revived by paramedics called out about 7.40pm. Shiv Venkat, a father and neighbour, said his wife had heard a “loud bang” at the time. “I feel scared,” Mr Venkat said. “We talk about this being one of the safest suburbs and one of the safest estates in Narre Warren. “It’s a big shock. It’s beyond every-
one’s imaginations. “I feel terrible about the tragedy.” Detective Inspector Mick Hughes, of Victoria Police’s Homicide Squad, said there was “no apparent reason” for the Ferntree Gully man’s death. He’s walked down the driveway and as soon as he’s got to the front door someone has ambushed him.” Several bullets were fired during the shooting. Falsely accused? By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne East family is fighting for the return of their “placid”, hobbling nine-year-old Rottweiller who they say has been wrongly impounded for killing sheep in a neighbour’s paddock. Sophie the dog has been locked up in a pound for five weeks, awaiting a hearing in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court accused of being part of a two-dog attack that killed two sheep and injured three others on Sunday, 23 July. Owner Angela Duffield says Sophie was unable to run due to “two bad back hips” - she just waddles. The dog had never been interested in chasing or attacking livestock, even as a pup, Ms Duffield said. Sophie had escaped their yard when a fence was damaged by a tree during storms on the night of 22 July. The next day, the frantically searching family found Sophie on a locked trailer cage on the back of a Casey Council ranger’s vehicle. The council had not provided the family with any evidence of their dog attacking the sheep, Ms Duffield says. The Duffield kids used to ride on Sophie’s back - now they are constantly asking when their companion will be back home. “We’re told that she’s the pound’s favourite dog,” Ms Duffield says. “There’s not a more placid rottweiller than Sophie. “They keep saying she’s a happy dog but she’s been away from her family for five weeks.” During Sophie’s impoundment, she was receiving medication for her painful rear hips. A 27-year-old Hampton Park man escaped with minor injuries after he crashed a car into the front of a bank on 22 August. The Ford Falcon squeezed past a parked car and rammed a front pillar of the Commonwealth Bank branch at Somerville Road about 5.50pm. The impact caused bricks and a beam to cascade from the bank’s facade onto the footpath. Media have reported that two people using an ATM dived away from the vehicle and were not injured. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the driver was believed to have lost control of the vehicle. He is assisting police with their inquiries. Paramedics treated the man’s minor injury at the scene. He was not taken to hospital.

Help with daily bread By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren soup kitchen has a unique perspective on life on the fringes of the world’s most liveable city. While Melbourne basks in the sought-after honour bestowed by The Economist magazine, Transit Soup Kitchen’s Keith Vethaak says life isn’t so liveable for many families hit by soaring rents and power costs. “If mortgage rates go up, it will be disastrous for a lot of families. “People are right on the limit.” He tells of a single mum living with seven kids in a van for the past 12 months. “She was told (by Department of Housing) they didn’t have a house big enough for them,” Mr
Vethaak says. “You’d think a three-bedroom house would be better than living in a car.” Mr Vethaak has referred several recent families who’ve fled their homes due to domestic violence. They have also been living in cars for weeks. Mr Vethaak and his tireless, cheery band of 100 volunteers help feed more than 1100 registered families with hot meals as well as fresh groceries. That equates to about 3000 people seeking help, Mr Vethaak says. More than 40 new families strapped by living costs have joined that list in the past month. They include refugees and migrants from a diverse range of religions and nations.
“The demand is enormous,” Mr Vethaak says. “And I’m expecting that will keep on growing.” There is a growing cohort of working families feeling the pinch, including contractors whose work dries up. Mr Vethaak hears of the shame of a truckie who said he could not feed his family and tried to hang himself. They get referred to him by Centrelink, doctors, police as well as schools with students skipping essential meals. “There’s a huge number who don’t have breakfast and lunch. “We later find out the family has to pay the rent, mortgage or electricity bills and there’s just no money for food.” It cooks or gives away about three tonnes of food a week, sourced
from the charities Second Bite and Avocare as well as generous local supermarkets, market gardens and bakeries. On Thursdays, the hall turns into a food market stocked with tonnes of fruit, vegetables, canned food, cereals and dairy. About 80 families are greeted heartily and made to feel welcome as they collect a week’s worth of food. It makes you wonder what would happen if Transit Soup Kitchen wasn’t their safety net. Mr Vethaak doesn’t have an answer. “It’s really, really tough especially in this area.” Donations and volunteers are welcome to Transit Soup Kitchen. If you can help, call 0438 398 594.

I refer to the article “Blizzard of tickets" (page 5, Berwick News, 17 August). The Casey Council owns three, if not four blocks of land immediately to the south of the Narre Warren Station - lots 1 and 2 Shrives Road and lot 3 (and possibly 5) in Austin Road, Narre Warren. These blocks are just grass and are not used for any worthwhile purpose. Victims of crime - so often said to be the forgotten voices in criminal justice - are set to be honoured at a forum hosted by City of Casey. Its organiser Janine Greening, of Cranbourne, is a victim - but also a leader. It still galls her that the two boys who bashed and strangled her mother to death in Rosebud 17 years ago may never be identified. They were never added to the sex offenders’ register, though they sexually assaulted 75-year-old Marie Greening Zidan and killed her in front of her disabled son. They phoned Ms Greening from a juvenile detention centre to taunt her about her mother’s death. Now, those killers would be in their thirties. They cannot be legally identified due to a court suppression order. Three trial judges said the then-teenagers were beyond rehabilitation, she says. “Rehabilitation doesn’t start until you are sorry for what you’ve done. “If they were sorry that’s fine. I don’t have a hatred for them - it’s a waste of energy.” Ms Greening’s forum will honour victims of crime and police officers in October. It will host speakers from
Crime Stoppers, Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse as well as speakers on the One Punch Can Kill campaign. There will also be talks on domestic violence, community safety and missing persons. Her forums have toured across Melbourne. “It’s all about education and awareness, and informing the public,” she says. “There’s all these people talking about crime but they’re not educated. “How are you going to know what it’s like to have a loved one murdered if you haven’t gone through it?” Ms Greening also founded the volunteer charity Forget Me Not Foundation for victims of crime, and has pushed for a National Victims of Crime Awareness Week. She receives no government funding. Since 2000, she feels there’s been little headway on victims’ rights, particularly with suppression orders. She takes issue with the recent Children’s Court Victoria warning for media not to identify victims, so as not stigmatise or embarrass juvenile offenders . It’s a move to further silence victims, Ms Greening says. “You can’t even say you were bashed by this 14 or 15-year-old who lives in Casey. Look at my bruises.
“The laws have crept even a step further. “It’s all about the perpetrator and nothing about the victim.” Victoria was “Suppression City”, handing out two blanket orders a day, she says. “They have got suppression orders on sex offenders and murderers in the community. “If they’re in the community near kids and vulnerable places like schools and disability homes, the places should know where the offenders are. “They should at least start with that.” Cr Amanda Stapledon said the forum reprised a successful event staged at Casey three years ago. The aim was to bring people together, to ensure their experiences were validated and understood. It was also a chance to raise “how we can do things better”, and to acknowledge their ongoing advocacy and support of other victims. Cr Stapledon said it was also important to acknowledge the work of police. “They get to see (confronting) things every day and this must have a big impact on their lives and mental health.” The public event will welcome all comers, including victims, Victoria Police and interested community members. It will be hosted at Casey Civic Centre in October.

Creativity comes to Berwick artist Glo Edkins in sweeping, colourful brush strokes. But the energetic painter, who has entered six portraits into the prestigious Archibald Prize, says creativity seems to be a dying art. Ms Edkins has had her third portrait accepted at a statebased Salon des Refuses - a select exhibition of paintings that didn’t make the Archibald final cut of 42. Or also known as the ones that got away. This year’s painting was of a treasured friend and arts volunteer Jill Page, who recently received an Order of Australia Medal. “I tell all my friends they should do something special, and I can put them in the Archibald,” Ms Edkins jokes. “I drew (Jill) as if she’s on stage holding a sheet of music in her hand. “She’s sort of smiling at us like Mona Lisa.” It’s what Ms Edkins calls a traditional portrait, something different to this year’s controversial Archibald winner. “I thought the aim of the Archibald was to get a likeness of a person,” she says of the winner. “If that’s what they want, next time I won’t make the effort!” Ms Edkins says the skill of portraiture - which requires studying human beings - is being overwhelmed by photo realism. BROADACRE LAND VALUE UP BY 50 PER CENT HOW LDAs add at least 50 per cent to your broadacre land value - and still let you sleep at night! Do you want to know how a Land Development Agreement (LDA) can add at least 50 per cent (or more) value to your broadacre land holding? To demonstrate this premise, rapidly expanding broadacre land developer Resi Ventures is offering landowners with a minimum 10 hectares (UGZ) a complimentary plan of subdivision to determine their site’s true underlying longterm value. Directors Khurram (Kaz) Saeed and Anthony Braunthal said a subdivision plan allowed a land owner to accurately determine the lot yield and therefore the optimum method of development. “By assessing a site using the latest planning requirements, Resi Ventures determines the highest and best use for the land. The key is then to maximise the value over the development period, which we achieve using our development expertise,” they said. In many cases this has led to a 50 per cent plus increase in value of the land for the owner over a cash sale by choosing a Land Development Agreement (LDA). “Basically, under an LDA the land owner contributes the land and we pay for everything from planning and infrastructure to marketing and sales and share the profits along the way,” they said. Underpinning the LDA is the fact there is no bank borrowing against the land, plus the added security of a guaranteed price per hectare, which the directors say allows the land owner to sleep at night knowing that their asset is secure. This also takes away the downside risk as the guaranteed floor price sits above what they could sell the land for in the current market. “We know that agents are constantly

All LDAs are tailored to the needs of landowners with a typical Resi Ventures LDA working as follows: · Resi Ventures advances money for your land that you can use straight away; · Resi Ventures pay the ongoing holding costs such as council rates and land tax; · The title of the land remains in your name until the development is complete; and · Resi Ventures manages every facet of the development at its risk, using their industry knowhow to maximise the value of your property. “Resi Ventures will add value to your land while funding all project related costs including planning permits, construction of roads and other civil infrastructure, and all external compliance costs such as developer contributions to Council, Melbourne Water and GAIC. “We project manage and fund the whole development process and share the development profits with you,” they said. Easy feed with tacos These Mexican pork tacos are perfect to serve dad on Father’s Day. It’s quick and easy so the kids can take charge in the kitchen to make a delicious, nutritious meal for the family. Mexican pork tacos • 800g lean pork mince • 1 tablespoon oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • 30g taco seasoning • 1 x 440g can diced tomatoes • 200g canned red kidney beans • 1/2 cup water • Salsa • 3 ripe tomatoes, seeded and
finely chopped • 1/2 cup corn niblets • 1 red onion, finely chopped • 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves To serve 16 - 20 small soft tortillas, warmed Sliced avocado Salsa sauce Method 1. Heat oil in a large frying pan and brown pork mince well over a high heat. Reduce heat and add the onion to the pan cook for three to four minutes. Add the taco seasoning to the pan and cook stirring well for two minutes.
2. Add the tomatoes, red kidney beans and water to the pan, reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes. 3. Combine the prepared salsa ingredients in a small serving bowl and set aside. 4. To serve, lay the warm tortilla on a board and spoon a little pork taco mixture into the centre, top with a sprinkle of salsa, add a slice of avocado and repeat with remaining mixture. Clubs in state of flux By David Nagel Clubs in the South East Football Netball League will have to wait until 2019 before participating in a full divisional structure with the Nepean and Peninsula Leagues after AFL South East released its final recommendations from its Senior Competition Review. The SEFNL clubs are part of the commission's overall plan to have four divisions up and running by 2020, but are not part of the initial plans for its divisional structure in 2018. The resolution of the commission was communicated to the 31 clubs from its three senior leagues at a meeting at Frankston Park on Tuesday. The final resolution of the commission is to implement ‘Option 1’ - a ‘Full Divisional Structure’ - from its draft recommendations released in early June. But it will be implemented in the following stages: * 2018 - A divisional structure between MPNFL Clubs. Division 1 and Division 2 comprising a mix of Nepean and Peninsula clubs. Existing SEFNL competition to remain in its current form for 2018. * 2019 - A full divisional structure incorporating the 2 Divisions of MPNFL and the SEFNL clubs, into a minimum of 3 Divisions * 2020 - Pending total AFLSE senior club numbers, the creation of a 4th Division to assist with the introduction of newly established or transferred clubs. So they are the facts - but where does it leave us all now? Some of the MPNFL clubs played their first card shortly after the announcement, taking the first steps in removing themselves from the AFLSE governance model. If those clubs - Frankston YCW, Karingal and Mt Eliza from Peninsula,
SEFNL clubs will now wait until 2019 before taking part in divisional football and netball. 171912 Picture ROB CAREW and Dromana, Frankston Bombers, Hastings, Pearcedale, Rosebud, Rye and Sorrento from Nepean, are successful with the move, and successful in reinstating an MPNFL Board as its governing body; they would become the only league in the state not to be governed by one of the 13 AFL Regional Commissions. It’s worth remembering that it was only in June 2015 that the former MPNFL Board resigned. “We take this action in response to the vote of ‘no confidence’ that was passed by a large majority of both Nepean and Peninsula league clubs at recent private meetings,” was the board’s
reason for the collective resignation. The 22 MPNFL clubs are certainly not fully united with the push, with some of the remaining clubs from Peninsula and Nepean not even aware that the push against AFLSE was going to take place! And SEFNL - well its structure is already feeling the pinch with Hampton Park members voting 88-7 to apply for a move to the Southern Football League at a special general meeting held at the club on Tuesday night. Redbacks president Mick O’Brien has been in constant communication with Southern CEO David Cannizzo,
and is meeting with AFLSE Regional general manager John Anderson, and SEFNL’s representative on the commission, Ryan Ford, to discuss the way forward for his club. It’s inevitable that Hampton Park - a club with strong ties to SEFNL clubs since 1954 - will be playing in different surroundings next year. It’s sad ... they will join Dingley (2006), Devon Meadows (2011) and Keysborough (2014) as clubs to have left the SEFNL competition in recent times. So what are the pros and cons for SEFNL clubs after AFLSE finally handed down its decision?
The eight clubs that will remain, Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer SFC, Pakenham and Tooradin-Dalmore, are not enthusiastic about the prospect of playing in an eight-team competition next year, but a small portion have turned the corner and are remaining positive. At least they now know where they stand. They have the option of uniting, and looking to join a neighbouring league en masse, or go it alone to seek new homes which would fracture and eventually break the SEFNL competition. And there are some positives to emerge from last night’s decision. The new structures would appear to be locked in for the next three years, but the delay in including SEFNL provides an opportunity to explore new and exciting options going forward. Cross-commission and league talks can begin in earnest, and AFLSE should feel obliged to look over the horizon and not just in its own backyard. Everyone from the commission to the clubs should work together now to explore every single option at their disposal. And netballers, well they should feel relieved because their predicament is one of the reasons why the full-divisional structure will not go ahead in 2018. The imbalance between competition structures and facilities would have made a divisional structure a disaster next year, but now the authorities have the chance to provide a smooth transition and get it right for the following year. But - with appeals an option and special meetings being called for - this current chapter in the story is far from over. And we won’t have to wait long for the next instalment.
Clearihan keeps his options open By Nick Creely After two decades of plying his trade as a multiple premiership winning assistant coach, Sein Clearihan finally got the chance to coach his own side in 2017 - Cranbourne’s VFL Women’s side. Fast forward six months into life as a senior coach and Clearihan is out the door effective immediately after realising he wasn’t part of the club’s alignment plans with the Casey Demons and Melbourne Football Club in 2018. “It wasn’t until later in the season when Casey got in touch with Cranbourne and indicated they wanted to take over the licence that I probably saw the writing on the wall, so I just stepped away from all the politics of it all and moved on,” Clearihan said. “I’m a sentimental bloke, so it was difficult to leave.” Despite admitting he was a little bit bitter, Clearihan said in the long run the club is likely to benefit from the decision to align the clubs. “I was disappointed, but in reality looking at the VFL Women’s program,
the girls probably needed it to be more competitive,” he said. “If they can align with the Casey Demons and get better then it’s good for them.” But Clearihan said despite the interruptions, injuries, poor results and pressure, he believes not only the playing group has benefited, but himself as he searches for another senior role in 2018. “It’s a stepping stone for me - I’m confident I’ve left them in a better spot with their footy, and I feel like I’ve done my job,” he said. “I’ve learnt how to deal with people of a different gender as well - it’s been hard in some ways, and mentally draining, but in other ways it gave me a lot of enjoyment. “They probably struggled a little bit with the training demands earlier in the season - with the AFLW they knew they had to step up to that level, and they improved a hell of a lot - I had a feeling at some point of time they would drop off, and they did. “They were getting done by
200-points last year, and the most they’ve lost by this season is about 60, so they have made fantastic inroads, but all the other sides have gotten even better with the injection of AFL players. “I’ve also been able to promote a couple of youngsters in Sophie Phillips and Darcy Guttridge - Guttridge will go in the draft this year and Sophie has improved so much, and is only 17.” Despite having one eye on the future, Clearihan - who is an assistant coach to Simon Goosey’s Cranbourne side - is focused on helping guide the Eagles to back-to-back flags. “Right at the moment I’d love to coach next year, but I’m not sure where or what - it’s the most important six weeks of the year for the seniors trying to win back-to-back flags, and create some history,” he said. “Once that’s done, I’ll sit back and have a look what’s out there, and I’d love to take a senior role on absolutely. “It’s going to be an exciting final series, and hopefully the luck’s on our side - the challenge is with us.”

In an at times brutal contest in wet and slippery conditions, the Dees jumped a game clear into fourth with just one round left of the home-andaway season. The Demons got off to a perfect start with Jack Watts taking a strong mark and duly converting the opening goal of the day, before the Gulls swung the momentum back through enormous pressure around the contest, and eventually pushed out to a seven-point quarter time. With the game heavily congested and the midfielders digging into the contest, Liam Hulett finally got the scoreboard ticking over midway through the second quarter via a setshot, before a stunning burst of three goals in the final four minutes saw the home side surge out to 12-point lead. With hard nut Jimmy Munro starring in the conditions, Eddie Morris
looking dangerous around goals and Jack Watts providing plenty of class, the Demons withstood the challenges of the premiership fancies to hold firm and steal a morale-boosting victory heading into finals. Casey coach Justin Plapp was pleased with his side’s response to a slow start, praising their ball use and ability to win critical contests. “To our player’s credit, they found some composure and got the game back going on their terms again,” Plapp said. “It’s probably one of the better wins I’ve been involved in, and we’ve had a few of those over the last couple of weeks.” Plapp said the game was always going to be a scrap due to some heavy rain prior to the game, and was satisfied that his group adapted. “They were not easy (conditions), but we were happy with how the game looked,” Plapp said. “We’ve out tackled them, we made a really big focus around that ... and we beat them in contested possession. “We felt we were better in that area of the game.”

By Nick Creely Solid, rather than spectacular, is really the only way to describe the Dandenong Stingrays’ comfortable 47-point win over the GWV Rebels on Sunday afternoon at Ballarat. The win - which is the ‘Rays eighth of the last nine matches came off the back of a six goal to one last half as the class of their prime ball movers took the gallant Rebels apart. With Haileybury premiership stars Luke Davies-Uniacke, Oscar Clavarino and Aiden Bonar back in and ready to fire, the Stingrays led by 12-points at quarter time and 20 at half time as the Rebels provided a challenge. Titans battle it out By David Nagel Step aside Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr - the real heavyweight clash this weekend takes place at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday where Cranbourne and Narre Warren square off in the South East Football Netball League qualifying final. The perennial powerhouses return to the scene of their most recent finals engagement, the 2014 preliminary final - still spoken about in revered tones around these parts. The Magpies were 41 points ahead, 10 minutes into the third term, before Cranbourne champion Marc Holt cut loose. Hobbling on one leg, Holt conjured up a miracle, kicking eight goals to lead his side to a famous victory. Who would have thought it would take three years for these two teams to meet again in the post-season - ironically at the same ground ... and with Holt once again far from peak physical shape. Holt played his first game in two months and just his fifth since breaking his leg on 30 July last year, against Doveton last week and kicked six goals, clearly the difference in a six-point margin between the two sides at the final siren. But the Eagles have far more going for them than just the great man. The reigning champs are the most resilient team in the competition, a reputation thoroughly deserved after playing in the last six grand finals. Players like Mat Fletcher, Stu Morrish, Ryan Davey, Micky Boland and Max Gearon have been loyal and trusty soldiers, while Ryan Jones, Luke Bee-Hugo and Shaun Marusic can turn games around with their firepower. The Magpies midfield has been terrific this season, with Trent Cody, Hayden Stagg and Michael Collins, at times, sharing the workload, while Dean Kelly has added a touch of class to centre wing. Picking a winner is difficult. Narre has the form on the board, winning its last six games on the trot, while the Eagles are proven, but haven’t hit the highs of 2016 to date. All the signs lean to the Magpies, but we’ll go for the Eagles to set up a dream date with Berwick with a thrilling four-point victory. It’s almost become an annual tradition that Beaconsfield and Doveton will meet in the elimina-
tion final each year - the third-consecutive edition taking place at Edwin Flack Reserve on Sunday. And the Doves will be hoping for a change of luck, going down to the Eagles by 25 points in 2015 before losing a nail-biter by two points at Holm Park Reserve last year. Beaconsfield started the season impressively, winning four of its first five games, but have lost both games to the Doves in 2017. “They’ve got us twice this year, so it’s clearly us that need to learn from those losses and go away and make some adjustments and make
sure it’s third time lucky this season,” Beacy coach Leigh McQuillen said. This one, well it appears to be in Doveton’s hands. They have more X-factor than the Eagles, with Russ Gabriel, Nick Battle and Sam Raru in extraordinary form this season. Surely, this is their time to shine and end an eight-year finals drought that has been the source of great frustration. It’s the Doves to salute in a dour struggle by 11 points.
Break for Magpies perched atop By David Nagel South East Football Netball League finals have arrived - and Narre Warren will enjoy a thoroughly deserved week’s rest after claiming top spot with a 51-33 victory over Tooradin on Saturday. The Magpies have lost just seven of 72 games since the beginning of 2014, the most recent a 43-47 loss to the Seagulls in round four, which followed a loss to Beaconsfield, which hurt badly. But the proud Magpies have regrouped, and completed a startling transformation, making it 13 consecutive wins with a dominant victory that confirms them as the team to beat for this year’s flag. “Losing those games was the kick up the bum we needed, we weren’t invincible and we needed to get back to training and work as hard as we ever had,” proud coach Jade Heinrich said. “We knew we had improved since then, but to have a win like that- just before finals- that’s going to give us a lot of mental confidence going forward. Credit to the girls, they played really good netball for four quarters and never took anything for granted.” The Magpies hovered over the Seagulls with an 11-7 first quarter before swooping like potential champions in the second term. Intense pressure was applied from one end of the court to the other, from Tracey Dell (goalkeeper) and Corrina Emery (goal defence) in defence, through Erin Clark (wing defence), Britt Mashado (centre) and Leigh Taylor (wing attack) through the midcourt, and ending with Tayla

ter a 49-33 victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. Simon O’Shanassy’s girls started fast, shooting out to a 12-6 lead, with Tanya Mijovic (GA) scoring 10 goals alone in the opening quarter. Mijovic matched that total in the second term, with the likes of Ash Gill (C), Rylee Nelson (WA) and Emily Boribon (GS) looking after the hot-handed goaler with great supply. Doveton will take a psychological advantage into Sunday’s elimination final against Cranbourne after easily disposing of the Eagles, 4728, at Casey Fields. Hayley Stewart (C), Zali Mifsud (WA) and Kyla Quinn (WD) were unstoppable through the middle for the Doves, who stretched an eight-goal lead out to 12 by half time. Rahni Samason (GS) had a great battle with Cranbourne defenders Tara Cecil and Sharni Lambden, while coach Liz Edwards (GK) controlled the defensive end of the court with youngster Mel Webster (GD). And Hampton Park has survived a first-half scare against Pakenham, running away with a 5433 victory at Robert Booth Reserve. The Lions were right in this one at half time, trailing 21-18, with Christine Meyer (GS), Keely Wright (GD) and Katrina Meredith (C) eyeing off their first victory of the season. But the Redbacks steadied, taking control with an 11-4 third quarter before ramming home their advantage with a dominant 22-11 final term. Brooke Kiely (GK/GS) enjoyed the switch from defence to attack, scoring 14 goals for the Redbacks in the final term.

Kooweerup twin towers Mitch Davey and Jason Cox just continue to take the cricketing world by storm with the tall, left-arm pace duo chosen in the final Vic Country Under 17 squad for the National Championships in Queensland next month. Both boys have already faced more than their fair share of injury setbacks in their young careers with both, at various stages, succumbing to stress-related injuries common to developing fast bowlers. “There was a pretty extensive rehab process - six to eight months of that and just strength and conditioning work,” Davey explained to the Gazette. Essentially, all the boys can do in that situation is keep building their bodies up until they can stand up to the rigours of fast bowling. “It didn’t really hurt that much only when I bowled,” he said. Cox explained that the pain would go away after a few weeks, and at that stage they’d feel like they should be out there playing - which
only served to frustrate them more. But now they’re both well and truly back on the right path - doing all the right things with both their physical development, and the development of their fast bowling skills. After having gone through the elite team selection process before, both boys went straight through to the last cut this time around for the Under 17 side, which was picked from three training sessions and a trial game. They’ve got a training camp coming up in Sale from 15 to 17 September before flying out to the Sunshine Coast later in the month. Cox will play for the Monash Tigers this season, while Davey will spend his 2017/18 club campaign with Kooweerup. They’re both just looking forward to an extended block of injuryfree play. “At this stage we should be right but these things just happen,” Cox said about their injuries. “You can do things to try and

stop them, but if they happen they just happen.” Davey is more of a bowling allrounder who generates plenty of swing and pace, while Cox generates a little more bounce from his action and is perhaps the more attacking of the pair. They’re both continually working on their bowling rhythm and both have done plenty of in-game

situational training at the MCG nets - with both old ball and new. There’s another similarity they share, too - they’re both products of a Kooweerup Cricket Club system that has produced some of the region’s best players over a matter of decades. “We couldn’t have had a better local club to develop our games at,” Cox said.
Reunion celebrates Eagles’ glory By David Nagel Character was seeping through the walls of the Cranbourne Football Club on Saturday with a colourful crowd in attendance for a reunion of the club’s 1987 senior and reserves premiership wins. Smiles and hearty laughter could be spotted all around the room as the stories flowed thick and fast, with a culture of friendship -built all those years ago - still as strong in the air as ever before. The senior premiership was the club’s third in a row; all obtained under the leadership of legendary coach Darryl Nisbet, who reserves coach Kenny Hickey acknowledged as the one who built the platform for success. “We were as thick as thieves here at Cranbourne, we would do anything for each other, and you were the one who brought that culture to the club,” Hickey said, pointing in Nisbet’s direction. “We were just closer than any other club, and you were responsible for that.” Current-day president Shane Baker spoke, as did 1987 president Paul Garrett, with Hickey and Nisbet speaking on behalf of the playing group.
Organiser of Cranbourne’s 1987 reunion, life member Graeme Davies, was a proud man at Casey Fields on Saturday. Former president and hard-man of the day, Geoff Laffin, said Nisbet’s training methods were unique and would probably be frowned upon today. “He would never ask us to do anything he wouldn’t do himself, but he would be plastered all over the front page of the papers if he trained us today like he did back then,” Laffin said laughing. “One day he got us all in the middle of the ground and told us we had played like dogs, and if we wanted to play like dogs he would treat us that way. He made us get on all fours and crawl off the ground like dogs, over the bitumen, through crushed rock, and into the change rooms. “Then he told us to all grab our bags and piss off. He was hard, but we all loved him and would do anything for him.”

Tough season for Eagles By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 13 From start to finish, Cranbourne were never truly in the contest on Sunday against Diamond Creek, as the Eagles count down the days until the end of the season. With very little going right in what has been an underwhelming 2017 season, the Eagles had one last chance to enjoy a home clash this season. In the 2.4(16) to 11.4(70) loss, the Eagles stood no chance once the finals-bound Creekers kicked five unanswered goals to skip out to a 32-point quarter time lead. With perennial goal-kicking machine Chloe Molloy (three goals) running amok, and a host of other players such as Ashleigh Riddell, Alison Downie and Amelia Barden all outworking the Eagles, danger signs loomed when the lead extended out to 50 courtesy of three more unanswered goals in the second term. With more fight the only saving grace in another lowly performance, the Eagles enjoyed a more fruitful third quarter, kicking 1.2 to 2.0 to almost win the term. Although a win was impossible, the Eagles then equalised the final term with another goal while keeping the Creekers to just 1.1 for the quarter. In the end, 54-points flattered the Eagles, but there were several positives. The Eagles managed to get more games into the likes of AFL-bound Darcy Guttridge, Courtney Clarkson, Holly Whitford, Sophie Phillips and Kim Cunico, and their leaders in Kirsten McLeod, Jasmine Grierson and Romy Timmins have continued to battle hard in trying circumstances. There is just one more round left to play for the Eagles who sit with a 3-10 record, and it doesn’t get any easier when they travel down the Nepean to face St Kilda at Peanut Farm Reserve on Sunday afternoon. Earlier last week, AFL Victoria announced that the Eagles will align with the Casey Demons and Melbourne Football Club, further strengthening their ties with the two clubs, and helping push the club off the bottom of the table in 2018.
