Following the meeting in Sydney the surgeon believed Sherie was a good candidate for surgery, and said the operation should have been done when the hemangioma was discovered as her ‘next bleed could put her in a wheelchair or worse, be fatal’. But to get surgery the family needed $100,000 to pay for the urgent operation and due to debt were unable to get a loan. To help raise money for the

fees, Julian created a GoFundMe page. The news from Dr Teo that Sherie might die at any moment shocked the family. As any mother would, Sherie immediately thought of her daughter and husband and the unthinkable possibility of leaving them behind. “When Charlie said it could be fatal that was one of the first things I thought of, leaving Harley behind,” Sherie wept. “I want to try and prevent that as
much as I can ... not being able to see her grow up and her being without a mum, I couldn’t imagine it. “I thought to myself even if I do have some slight deficits after the surgery I just don’t care anymore - I want to be here for her as much as I can be.” The GoFundMe page has already raised over $40,000 and both Sherie and Julian said they were overwhelmed with the responses and were grateful for all the kind donations. It’s every mother’s fear that she may die before her child and be unable to watch them grow and develop with the overwhelming, nurturing love that only a mother can provide. Every day, Sherie Lucas lives with that fear. The Monbulk mother received news in January 2016 that she had a cavernous haemangioma brain tumor. It's the horror of knowing that she may die and be unable to watch and guide her darling daughter - the unavoidable pain and loss her daughter will suffer because of her absence, and the shadow it will leave on her daughter’s life. For if you aren’t there, then who could ever tend to your child as you would? Who, other than you, could possibly know what they need? Each morning, Sherie wakes up unsure if she will have another stroke a fourth and perhaps final such event which would render her wheelchairbound or worse. The 28-year-old mother and her 29-year-old husband from Monbulk were thrown into a state of constant limbo, when in January last year Sherie woke with a strong headache and the loss of her motor functions. “I got out of bed to go to work in the morning and my vision was quite fuzzy, I fell out of bed and couldn’t really use my legs,” she said. “We went to Angliss hospital at 10am in the morning and were still there by 7 at night and it was just getting worse.” The doctors told Sherie the stroke was caused by a rare brain cavernous hemangioma - a blood vessel malformation from a benign tumor that had burst and bled, and which due to its location would be difficult to remove. Their daughter Harley was 10 months old and Sherie, struggling with re-learning how to walk, managing a hairdressing business in Monbulk, and being a new mother, was forced to sell her business. “Each time I would work I came home worse then I felt that morning.” In August, on the day she sold her

Author is published By Wendy Williamson A young writer from Ferntree Gully is celebrating success, with one of her stories published in the 10th anniversary edition of Award Winning Australian Writing. Last year 27-year-old Katelin Farnsworth won Editor’s Choice Award for her short story, ‘Bunny Rabbits,’ published in the literary magazine ‘Verandah.’ Her win made her story eligible for consideration in the 2017 volume of award-winning writing. Then last month, when she was on a camping holiday in Queensland, Katelin heard that she was a winner. ‘Bunny Rabbits’ was accepted into Award Winning Australian Writing 2017. “It’s very exciting,” she said. “It’s so nice to have that recognition. The book gets a lot of exposure in the literary world, so it’s great to have my story included.” Katelin likes writing about relationships, specifically themes of grief and loss. This is not the first time she has found success with her writing. Her short story, ‘Round,’ won the Rachel Funari Prize for Fiction and went on to be accepted into the 2015 volume of Award Winning Australian Writing. Katelin has also won awards for her poetry and she has just heard that she has won Verandah’s Genre Award. Her work has been published in literary journals including Tincture Journal, Offset, Lip Magazine and The Victorian Writer. “I have always wanted to be a writer,” said Katelin, who is currently

el. She has just finished her first novel and is looking for a publisher. Now she is working on her second. It is set in the Dandenong Ranges, which Katelin has always called home, and Katelin hopes to finish the first draft by the end of the year.

She Shed skills up sheilas for success By Derek Schlennstedt The first Hills She Shed class took place on 17 August at Emerald Secondary College. As the name implies, the She Shed caters to the interests of women who would like to further their knowledge in a range of trades work. Organiser Amanda Browning said it all started a year ago when, after becoming sick and tired of having to ask other people to fix items for her, she posted on a Cockatoo community facebook page that she wished there was a men’s shed type group for women to learn those skills. A year later, not only has Amanda collected a following of over 400 women interested in being part of a Hills She Shed, but she has run the first class, teaching woodwork, and secured a room for the group to practice. “There’s a gap and I’ve found a lot of women want to learn these things,” she said. “Lots of them want to do it them-

selves ... home repairs, car services, they want to learn how to fix things instead of having to ask a tradesperson or their husband.” The classes cover everything from woodworking and home repair classes and Amanda said there were even plans to include car maintenance, as well as bringing in a teacher to help teach wood splitting. She said there was an obvious need for it and that the feedback from the classes had been positive, with many women enjoying learning how to use power tools. “Once you start knowing that you can give it a go, you find that these things are actually quite simple, it’s just that you’ve never had the ability or had a teacher to show you how to do it before,” she said. “It means that we don’t have to rely on others and just because women don’t have the background in these types of skills doesn’t mean we can’t do it.” Currently classes take place once a

Yarra Ranges ranks third among Victoria’s 79 local councils and 25th per capita for reports of animal cruelty, according to figures released this week by RSPCA Victoria. Of the 10,180 cruelty reports to RSPCA Victoria across the state in 2016-’17, there were 412 in Yarra Ranges, which equates to one report for every 363 residents in the area. The state-wide average was one report per 581 residents. RSPCA Victoria chief executive officer Dr Liz Walker said understanding the rate of cruelty reporting and the different offences in local areas is critical to ensuring that RSPCA Victoria directs its education, advocacy and enforcement efforts to the places which need it most. “This year, RSPCA Victoria has started working more closely with local councils to understand local animal welfare issues, and to put in place tailored, local initiatives to educate owners and better protect animals,” she said. Welfare concerns for dogs, cats and horses continued to make up the majority of issues reported to RSPCA, and reports of animals not receiving basic care far outnumbered all other offences reported. Yarra Ranges had 170 of these, the sixth most in the state. Yarra Ranges had more reports (153) involving horses than any other local council area. It had the second highest number of reported concerns (148) about animal hygiene, grooming and housing conditions, and at 142 the second highest when it came to reports involving underweight animals. Also reported in Yarra Ranges were 88 issues involving sick or injured animals not receiving vet treatment (the third highest figure in the state), 29 concerns about animals being beaten or wounded and 24 reports of abandoned animals. “In most cases, concerns reported to us are quickly resolved by our inspectors educating the owner or person in charge of the animals involved, and reminding them of their legal obligations to care for their animals,” Dr Walker said. Yarra Ranges residents looking for help with their pets are fortunate to have ready access to the services of Animal Aid, which has a centre at Coldstream. CEO Mark Menze said that his organisation worked with the council and had a wealth of expertise. Its services include grooming, animal training and a vet clinic which is open to the public. “We’re here to help,” Mr Menze said. “We offer basic advice for free. Mud, blood war diaries By Derek Schlennstedt If ever there was a book that documented a firsthand account of what soldiers of the First Australian Imperial Force (AIF) had to endure in World War I, then Elva Cunningham’s ‘Who Wouldn’t Be a Soldier’ is certainly it. The last living child of WWI Sgt Thomas Arthur Dykes, Elva Cunningham has dedicated more than 30 years to writing the book that entails all her father’s war experiences. The book release will be at Mount Evelyn RSL on 17 September. Nine diaries of immense detail were left to Elva after her father passed in 1967, and she said that it was her responsibility to ensure the vivid records kept by her father were published. “I feel it is a responsibility; they have always been mine since I was little, and you can’t just push them away into the back of the cupboard,” she said. “You have to share it with people who are interested and especially the families, who might have lost someone in the war.” The nine pocket-sized diaries record Sgt Dykes’ raw and uncensored account of an Infantryman’s daily struggle to survive in the Gallipoli campaign and the horrors of the Western Front. Now the diaries which were recognised as an ‘extraordinary document’ by Major-General Mike O’Brien CSC have been chronologically collated and published in the book titled ‘Who Wouldn’t be a Soldier’. Mount Evelyn RSL secretary Anthony McAleer, who edited the diaries and collated the book, said the amount of detail and the flowing style of writing was astounding.

Elva said she wouldn’t stop
there and would be sharing it with everyone involved and even send it to many of the locations mentioned in the book. “He used to tell my mother they were written in the mud and the blood, and I believe that because they are quite worn and stained.“ “I’ve probably done the most important thing in my life I could have done

Brigade fired up for garage sale By Derek Schlennstedt Mark it in your diaries...The annual Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade garage sale is back for 2017, and is shaping up to be the biggest yet. The garage sale is one of the biggest in the Mount Evelyn and Silvan areas, and this year promises to deliver all sorts of goodies and paraphernalia. Captain Rick Ventrella said he enjoyed seeing the connection this event had with the community, and that it brought locals together. “It’s an amazing way to dispose of unwanted or unused practical items that other community members can purchase cheaply, and support their local fire brigade in the process.” “We will have so many items from tools to toys, bric-a-brac, electrical, garden products, plants galore, books, whitegoods and small furniture available just to name some of it," he said. The annual garage sale, which helps
raise much-needed funds for the brigade, offers a great opportunity for people to clean up their homes and sheds, and move unused dusty items. Unlike most garage sales, however, residents can then come back on Saturday 7 October, to get a bite to eat, buy a raffle ticket for a trailer full of goodies, and find some more hidden treasures. “It’s great to see people re-connecting with old neighbours and friends too, it really brings the community together," Rick said. All funds will go towards the upkeep of brigade-owned vehicles and to purchase new equipment and tools to enhance the services delivered to the community. People wishing to donate goods can deliver items to the fire station on Sunday from 8.30am-10am from 10 September. In brief Narre Warren shooting A 26-year-old Ferntree Gully man was gunned down in Narre Warren on 17 August when he was ambushed as he got out of his car to visit a friend, according to police. Police believe the victim had been in contact with the occupants of the house earlier in the day to arrange the visit. Police were called to the scene on Kurrajong Road in Narre Warren around 7.30pm when neighbours heard a number of gunshots. Detective Inspector Mick Hughes, of the Homicide Squad, said a number of bullets were fired in the ambush attack in Melbourne’s south east and that someone had snuck up on the Ferntree Gully man as he walked up to the front door of his friend's place. “The victim has got out of his car, he’s walked down the driveway and as soon as he’s got to the front door, someone has ambushed him and he’s been shot and fatally wounded," Detective Inspector Hughes said. “We are as confident as we can be from a community safety aspect that this is a targeted attack.” The Ferntree Gully man was shot in a hail of bullets moments after arriving and despite the best efforts of paramedics, he could not be revived. Insp Hughes said he was looking for people who had CCTV in the area to get in touch with police. Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing teenager Myrah Fitzgerald. The 15-year-old was last seen on Thursday, 10 August, about 1pm at Yarraman railway station in Noble Park. Myrah is described as being about 155cm tall, with a thin build, hazel eyes and dark brown hair. She was last seen wearing blue acid-washed jeans, a tie-dye T-shirt, blue and white Nike runners and a white cap. Investigators believe she frequents the Mount Evelyn and Frankston CBD areas. On 13 August I was proud to attend the Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans Day Service in Warburton. It was a touching service as we reflected on Australia’s involvement and contribution. Around the nation, services were held for the 51st anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, commemorating a battle that took place during the Vietnam War. On 18 August 1966 D Company
entered the Long Tan rubber plantation. Less than an hour later a Vietcong force, estimated at between 1500 to 2500, attacked the smaller 108-strong Australian force. The Australians, against the odds and with the help of the New Zealand artillery, won the day. The Battle of Long Tan is one of the most well-known and costly single engagements of the Vietnam War. When I first immigrated to Australia I was shocked at how Vietnam veterans were treated on their return. I could not understand how a country that had called them up to serve could be so shallow. The demonstrations that took place at the time forced the returned soldiers to literally sneak back into their own country. Thankfully, times have changed
and we now know they should have been treated better on their return. Our veterans deserve to be recognised for their valour, strength and camaraderie and I would like to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the Vietnam War and to those who returned home with injuries and without their mates. I have also felt that there is one group that took part in the war but has not been given the proper recognition. That is the South East Asian Treaty Organisation (SEATO) civilian medical and surgical teams. Some 450 doctors, nurses and anaesthetists answered the nation’s call for volunteers to be deployed to Vietnam as part of SEATO. These volunteers suffered their share of the hardship during the war as they tended the
wounded civilians and soldiers. They were witnesses to the full horror of war. There are approximately 300 of the 450 men and women left and they, just like our veterans, are getting older and are suffering health issues yet they do not get the same medical benefits as do other veterans who served in the conflict. These brave volunteers have been honoured with Australian Active Service Medals yet they are denied access to the veterans’ gold card. For years the SEATO volunteers have been campaigning for the gold card and are supported by people like the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrave. I believe it is time they got the recognition they deserved.

Silvan open garden set to shine By Wendy Williamson The first spring daffodils, a fine tree peony collection and lots of rare trees and shrubs feature in the beautiful Silvan garden of Colin and Marj Drewitt. In what has become an annual event, the garden at 8-10 Henderson Hill Road is open to the public on the last two Saturdays of August and the first Saturday of September, from 10am to 3.30pm. Included in the entry fee are cups of tea or coffee and biscuits. Entry is $3 per adult, $2 per child, family $10, with part of the entry fee going to the Fred Hollows Foundation. “I have great admiration for him and his foundation, giving people the ability to see,” Mr Drewitt said. Over 20 years Mr Drewitt has created a gorgeous half-acre garden, complete with neat box hedges, from what was once a chestnut orchard. The centrepiece should find favour with all ages - a model garden railway, with its own mini-landscape through which a little train merrily makes its way.

Time to have your say By Kath Gannaway Have your say on marriage equality is the message coming through strongly from Yarra Glen LGBTI rights activist Jason Ball, and from Casey Liberal MP Tony Smith. Jason Ball, the Yarra Glen footballer who came out as the first gay footballer, sparking Gay Pride matches in the Yarra Ranges and in the AFL, urged people through his blog last week not to boycott the survey. Mr Smith also advocated for people to vote, saying he is a strong advocate of the direct democratic process. He said the Coalition had pledged prior to the last election to hold a compulsory plebiscite, so every Australian voter could have their say. “That was my promise here in Casey, and it is right that we honour that commitment,” he said. He said with Labor and the Greens defeating the plebiscite legislation in parliament, the government had moved to honour their pledge to give Australian voters a say through a voluntary postal vote.
As Speaker of the House, Mr Smith will not have a vote. “If there is to be a parliamentary vote on this issue, I do not get a vote, because unlike every other Member of the House of Representatives, I do not have a deliberative vote on any matter, because I am the Speaker,” he explained. He did say however, that he had made his position on the same-sex marriage debate known when seeking re-election. “I made it clear that while I personally had never favoured change, I would honour the outcome of the plebiscite,” he said. “That is the purpose in having it; to let the people decide. That is why so many Coalition Members of Parliament, have said precisely the same thing. “People have legitimate views on both sides of the argument, and I urge those involved in the debate to be respectful of those legitimately held views. “I urge people to have their say,” he said.
Mr Ball, a former Young Australian of the Year and candidate for The Greens in the last election, says however that the government has abdicated its responsibility in not deciding on marriage equality as part of the usual parliamentary process. “Should the High Court challenge (to the legitimacy of the postal vote) fail, please do not boycott this plebiscite,” he said. “Now is the time to stand together and show that we are stronger than this government and the vocal minority.” He said there had already been a groundswell for change, with tens of thousands of people contacting the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission) to update their details, and an increase in new enrolments. “Should this plebiscite proceed we must all vote ‘Yes’ to show every LGBTI Australian that they matter, they are worthy, they are loved and they are equal,” he said. By Derek Schlennstedt At some point, most people have suffered from a sore throat, inhibiting their ability to talk and communicate, and many may resort to a whiteboard or notebook as the problem is temporary. However, for many who have suffered a stroke or serious injury, there could be speech impairment over a long period of time. More than five per cent of Australia’s population face speech difficulties and have a communication disability that restricts them from meaningfully engaging in day to day life. To raise awareness about this situation, Speech Pathology Week, which runs from 20-26 August, aims to promote the work speech pathologists undertake to help more than 1.1 million Australians who have a communication or swallowing disorder which impacts their daily life. This year’s theme, ‘Communication access: Everyone gets the message’ focuses on the need to provide equal opportunities for those suffering from a speech impairment. The Mail spoke to Talia Zyngier, a speech pathologist at Angliss Hospital in Ferntree Gully, about how technology is helping to create that equal opportunity. “Communication access is about creating a world where people with communication difficulties can communicate with everyone, regardless of whether they have communication impairments or not,” Ms Zyngier said. “The work that we do is looking at assessments and intervention for people with communication and cognitive swallowing disorders, aiming to get people as fully involved and participating in their

The Annual Upwey Archies is again inviting local creatives of all ages and abilities to celebrate the people of Upwey. Inspired by the Archibald Prize and ‘Not The Archies’, The Upwey Archies aims to unite the creative voices and visions of the community by inviting artists in the Yarra Ranges region to exhibit an image of someone who is important to them or to the township of Upwey. The portraits will be presented in an exhibition across the shops and businesses of Upwey between 15 October 14 November and last year the Archies project saw over 50 portraits exhibited across the township. The Andrews Labor Government is encouraging locals in Melbourne’s east to have their say, as community consultation kicks off in the lead-up to the first Eastern Metropolitan Partnership assembly on 31 August. The annual Metropolitan Partnerships will give people living the Yarra Ranges the chance to come together as a community and advise the Andrews Labor Government on regional priorities and opportunities. Locals can talk directly to decision-makers about the future needs of the eastern metropolitan region, and help all levels of government better understand the varied challenges facing
Melbourne’s east as it grows which the partnership then advises government on actions that can make a real difference to the liveability of the Eastern Metropolitan Region. Minister for Suburban Development Lily D’Ambrosio said that as those outer communities continued to flourish and grow it was paramount that residents engaged in this conversation to keep their locality sustainable. “Our suburbs are growing and it’s vital that community groups and all levels of government are involved in keeping our city liveable and sustainable. “Local communities know exactly what their priorities are, that’s why we’ve launched the Eastern Metro Partnership.”
The Eastern Metropolitan Partnership is one of six across Melbourne’s metro area, with the Inner Metro, Inner South East, Western, Southern and Northern Partnerships also launched in June. Each partnership includes eight business and community representatives, the CEO of each council in the region and a senior Victorian Government representative. WE increasingly see smoke and mirrors used to mask and justify poor decision-making. Developments at the Emerald Secondary College in relation to facilities for the many students with disabilities highlights that these practices are alive and well at many levels. After advocacy from the previous school principal, school council and active parents, in 2015 James Merlino announced $1.5 million for a purpose-built integration facility for Emerald Secondary College, to meet the needs of the many students with disabilities. In November 2016, a meeting led by the school principal heard that the $1.5 million was not forthcoming, and a lesser unspecified amount would be spent refurbishing an existing building. This would be shared with well-being programs. A large number of concerns were expressed at this meeting, and promises were made. In term two this year the existing support staff and students were relocated temporarily to the library pending the removal of the portable that had accommodated the students and support and staff. Recently, the school leadership revealed to some (not parents) a decision to base some of the students and all Inclusion support staff in the library, meaning student privacy and confidentiality will be compromised due to a lack of secure storage and an absence of private meeting spaces. Students will not receive the full range of supports required, all while the school is promoting this new inclusion hub. Lowly-paid, highly committed inclusion staff will end up still with an unsuitable physical working environment. Decision-making around the true allocation of resources and the use of these funds has been secretive, featuring blatant use of funds for other purposes, fluid definitions of inclusion used to justify changes, and thought bubbles turned into actions without due consideration of best practice. Requests for specific information on budgets and expenditure relating to the $1.5 million have fallen on deaf ears, including a Freedom of Information application I made in November 2016 which is still awaiting a response. So Mr Merlino, what happened to your promise? Where is the $1.5 million for students with disabilities? This broken promise, combined with failed school leadership means that yet again some of society’s most vulnerable young people will miss out. Full spectrum By Wendy Williamson “Embrace, equip, empower” is the mantra of Spectrum Journeys Inc. For four and a half years this non-profit organisation in Melbourne’s outer east has worked on equipping and encouraging early childhood educators, teachers, future professionals and families as they support kids on the autism spectrum to flourish. That work has just become easier with the opening of the Spectrum Journeys Inc Autism Hub in Lilydale. As SJI director Kate Johnson explained, the organisation now has a home in which to run its workshops and a base for therapists. “The hub has localised our services and allowed us to expand. We have run several workshops already from our
new hub since it opened last month,” Kate said. “We offer low-cost practical workshops to equip parents and education staff with autism training and strategies.” Two independent therapists an occupational therapist and a speech pathologist - operate out of the hub, providing easy access for families who might be at the hub already for a workshop. SJI also offers carer support via its Blessing Bags. These bags full of donated pamper items are given to mums and carers of children on the autism spectrum. The new hub at 6/9 Clarke Street is proving a great venue for Blessing Bag creation nights. “We are a predominantly volunteer-driven organisation. Fifty per cent of our team have children on the autism spec-
trum,” Kate said. “We fund-raise to ensure our workshops are low-cost and accessible.” Super Special Dress Up Day is one way in which the organisation raises funds. Kindergartens and schools are invited to register for this initiative which focuses on what makes everyone special as opposed to what makes everyone different. Details are on the Spectrum Journeys website and the Facebook page, where you can also find details of a workshop coming up in October with clinical psychologist Leanne Winter on autism spectrum disorder and girls. From November, Spectrum Journeys will be offering support co-ordination to assist families navigate the early stages of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Sad loss of CFA man OBITUARY By Derek Schlennstedt It’s difficult to convey the sadness when an enduring member of the hills community passes, especially in a small township where every loss has a profound impact. That loss has certainly been felt in the Upwey community with the sad loss of loving father, husband, CFA member and well-known larrikin Allan Duncan, who on 5 August passed away after a long battle with cancer. Allan was born in 1946 and grew up in Warrnambool and attended Warrnambool High School, where he immediately set about utilising his practical knowledge and handson skills to help the theatre with their productions. These skills would follow him his entire life and he enjoyed himself best when he was working on anything mechanical or electrical. “He held himself as an experimentalist - he liked to look into things, find out how they worked, and would then find out what the solution was if there was a problem,” his wife Margaret said. It was no surprise then that Allan would follow a career in telecommunications, and after studying science at Melbourne University in 1964 he went on to major in engineering and electrical engineering. It was during his time at university studying where he met Margaret, and as they say the rest is history, with the two marrying four years later in 1970. With Margaret his family grew and together they had three lovely daughters and two sons, all born between 1972 and 1985. In 1975, after meeting with a colleague who lived in the Upwey area, both Margaret and Allan ‘fell in love’ with the area and agreed to move. A year after moving to the area, he joined the Upwey CFA and unbeknownst to him at
the time would dedicate 40 years of active service to the local station - even helping run the junior brigade. “I think we just had to have this community spirit in our family - it was something he did - you helped the community,” Margaret said. It wasn’t long before Allan’s charismatic and hardworking character saw him become a well-known and much-loved icon of Upwey and he soon became famous around the Hills as the person who owned the Hillman Imp - which he drove despite the well-reported holes it had in the floor. One particular well-known story from the 1990s that summed up Allan and his Hillmans relationship was that he drove the car from Upwey to Traralgon for the Junior State Championships, where he was a judge. Upon arrival in Traralgon his car was leaking oil and so over the weekend he not only cared for the Upwey Juniors and judged the State Championships, but also pulled the engine out of the car, re-built it, fixed the leak and put it all back together again to drive home to Upwey. “He was very fond of his Hillman Imp,” said Margaret. “I thought it was awful to drive but he loved it - his father had been a motor mechanic and that was one thing that Allan was very good at, fixing cars, in particular his Hillman.” Throughout the 42 years of living in Upwey, Allan dedicated 40 of those to the Upwey Fire brigade and in those years was awarded Upwey brigade Life Member, a VFBV Gold Star Award, the National Medal, and the National Emergency Medal. Following Allan’s passing the Upwey CFA station flew the Australian flag at half-mast all week in remembrance of the professor, the master of hose repair, a quiet achiever and a patient teacher to all the new members who came through Upwey’s doors in his 41 years there. Allan passed away early on 5 August.

Meet the Principal My name is Trish Enzinger and I am very proud to be the Principal of Birmingham PS for the past fourteen years. It is the longest I have ever stayed at a school and I truly am passionate about our school community, the students,the teachers and the parents.We have had many achievements over the past decade or so, but our greatest achievement to date is to become an accredited member of CIS the Council of International Schools. Darren Trippett Since joining Yarra Hills Secondary College in 2012, College Principal Darren Trippett has overseen the largest transformation in the school’s 53 year history. Darren came to Yarra Hills with over 25 years’ experience, much of that in leadership at the acclaimed Vermont Secondary College. In 2007, Darren was individually recognised as a ‘High Performing Young Leader’ by Professor Brian Caldwell, former Dean of Education at the University of Melbourne, being chosen to represent Australia in the International Network for Educational Transformation, International Conference in Beijing, China. Eight decades, all for veterans Thanks to the support from the general public, the Boronia RSL Sub Branch has spent the past eight decades caring for veterans and their families. With 2017 marking the branch's 80th birthday, Boronia RSL Secretary Carl Sorensen JP explained that the support given to those in need of welfare was only possible thanks to the purchasing of Anzac badges and poppies by the general public. “Over the past four years we have had a marvelous turn up at our commemorative service and dawn service, with an average of 23,000 people having attended. Whether there is rain or not, the families, especially the small children, show their respect,” Mr Sorensen said. “We have a gunfire breakfast on completion of our dawn service and hope that more people will stay and attend because so many volunteers assist to supply this breakfast.” With no pokies and no paid staff, the Boronia RSL is run completely by volunteers who take great pride in their branch. And as Mr Sorensen explained, the branch is happy to welcome anyone through their doors. “You don’t have to be a member to attend our RSL branch. Anyone is welcome at any time and they will hopefully fill out an application form to join our sub-branch as social, affiliate or service members. You would be made very welcome in our traditional RSL.” Mr Sorensen said. Boronia RSL also caters for function hire with the option of full catering or the arrangement of personal catering.

By Wendy Williamson A forthcoming exhibition at Ferntree Gully will move art off the street and onto the walls of The Hut Gallery. Ferntree Gully Arts Society’s annual street art exhibition started about five years ago, with the aim of making street artists and their work more valued and respected. This year the exhibition will include, for the first time, a skateboard art competition. Arts society president Shirley Dougan expects competition to be fierce. She said the gallery bought some skateboard decks suitable for painting on, as well as some canvases for the street art and offered them for sale to artists. Many have sold. “It’s gone ballistic!” she said. “And we know some people are supplying their own decks and canvases.” Entry is open to all ages, from the young to the young at heart. Powerful photographs line the walls of the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum, where the Beyond Borders travelling exhibition is currently showing. The exhibition features photos of refugees and asylum seekers taken by MAPgroup photographers. Many Australian Photographers (MAP)group is a non-profit association of about 40 photographers who share a passion for, and commitment to, high quality, independent documentary photography. At the Beyond Borders exhibition, words accompanying each photograph shed light on the unique experiences of the photo subjects. The viewer is reminded that these are people, not problems. This message is reinforced by video recordings of interviews with the refugees in which they speak of their lives before and after seeking refuge in Australia. The Lilydale exhibition has the added attraction of a local angle, as museum program director Patrick Watt explained. “Some of the refugees who live locally have also been interviewed. The artists who will perform sacred, classical, Irish and Australian music have donated their time and amazing talents, with all door sales going to a shelter for women and children experiencing homelessness which relies solely on donations. Eleven musicians will perform including in the repertoire

Hills musician Jacquie Rutten from Sacred Stage is organising the event, which starts at 2pm at the Tecoma Uniting Church, 1566 Burwood Highway, Tecoma. Ms Rutten said they were hoping local people would support the event and had kept ticket prices at a reason-
able cost of $20 and $15, with children enjoying free entry. The church will provide a beautiful space for the concert and audience members will also be treated to a delicious homemade afternoon tea. Stellar cross countr y season By Jamie Strudley Yarra Ranges Athletics celebrated another successful cross country season with their annual presentation day and fun relay at the amazing Hedgend Maze. The cold and occasional rain did not deter over 100 members and their families enjoying all that Hedgend Maze had to offer. A fantastic marquee kept everyone warm and dry and provided an excellent backdrop for the awards presentation. The promise of a huge barbecue lunch encouraged athletes and some hesitant parents to join in the fun of the relay with teams of three running one, two or three laps of the impromptu course through the grounds of Hedgend Maze. An exciting race evolved with one of the closest finishes in recent years, with many teams in with a chance with one lap to go. At the conclusion of the relay fun, it was the turn of the club’s dedicated barbecue tong masters to take centre stage, putting on an awesome spread for everyone. This was followed by the presentation of awards and trophies. On display were the raft of trophies earned by the club throughout the season including the Knox Open Day Team Trophy.

Olinda Ferny Creek are sitting in third with Wandin in fourth and Upwey Tecoma secure in fifth. Top spot is still up for grabs though and next week is important for all teams. In the reserves, Olinda and Healesville share top spot, Wandin has a stranglehold on third while there is still jostling for fourth and fifth between Mount Evelyn, Emerald, Monbulk, and Upwey Tecoma. Mount Evelyn still holds onto top spot in the Under 18s with Emerald in second, Wandin have an opportunity to steal second but have a solid hold on third. Healesville will remain in fourth, Upwey Tecoma is fifth with Woori Yallock in sixth and Warburton and Gembrook making up the final eight. The home and away season is over for Division 2 - Belgrave are Minor Premiers in Senior and Reserves Football as well as A and B Grade netball. All set for finals By Derek Schlennstedt The Sherbrooke Basketball Association is gearing up for another season, and there are now opportunities for both individuals and teams to get involved at all levels. The current season is drawing to a close, with finals for the domestic competition running over the coming weeks. This season, though, has been a big success with over 60 registered teams, as well as regional representative teams for both juniors and seniors. The finals will see teams from every club involved with both the depth and standard of play improving every year. This season saw the successful introduction of the girls Under 14 competition for the first time and Sherbrooke hopes to continue to build on this with more opportunities for male and female players at both the domestic and representative levels. Association Secretary Pam Ball said basketball is a great team sport and is gaining popularity in the hills community. “It’s a great time for Sherbrooke Basketball, we are seeing strong community involvement, professional development at all levels and growing player numbers particularly at the junior levels,” she said. The construction of a new basketball stadium at Upwey is also about to commence in coming months which will further improve
