Centre of the action attraction By Bonny Burrows Pakenham has this year become home to a number of exciting high-profile government projects which have seen development and jobs boom in the area. Two major rail projects - a pre-cast factory on Healesville-Kooweerup Road, and a train depot in Pakenham East - are boosting local employment by the hundreds and have seen Pakenham become the hub of the State Government’s Level Crossing Removal Project. Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Brett Owen said with 40 new families moving to the shire each week it was important the area attracted as many jobs as it could. “And with 70 per cent of our residents leaving the area for work, we welcome these local jobs,” councillor Owen said. However, as evidenced by the number of traditional events continued, Pakenham is determined to maintain its rural roots. March’s Parklea Pakenham Show - the largest free agricultural show in the state - was another smashing success, with families turning out in droves to enjoy a sunny day of fun. Show committee president Geoff Young it was the show’s rural aspect which set it apart from the many other similar events. “It’s not a market, it’s people from the country showing off to the city people,” Mr Young said. “And we really try to keep it that way, as an ag show and not a market. That’s what we are.” The 41st Yakkerboo Festival, held in April, also drew the booming town back to its country roots. The annual festival saw crazy, colourful floats created by locals parade down Pakenham’s main streets. While its committee is seeking fresh faces with new ideas for next year’s festival, organisers

Committee member and new mum Naomi Horsley said the festival united residents in a way not many other events did. While it was a large-scale event, it had a tightknit community feel, she said.
“Yakkerboo brings the community together. Everybody has a connection with Yakkerboo in one way or another,” Ms Horsley said. “Yakkerboo is uniquely Pakenham and that’s why people love him.” With a hospital, airport and other exciting
projects on the cards for Pakenham and its immediate surrounds, Pakenham is definitely becoming a city in its own right. However, if locals have their way, it will also continue to pay homage to its humble beginnings as a small country town.

The Gazette was not the only new business to make a mark on Pakenham in 1917. The Auction Mart, opened in October of that year by recently retired shire president William Close, created a real buzz around the district.

These days people who want to buy a car or cattle in Pakenham are likely to find themselves south of the bypass at Car Megamart or the nearby Victorian Livestock Exchange. Back in 1917, they could buy both and a lot more - at the Pakenham Auction Mart, on the corner of Main and Station streets. The business, set up by former shire president William Close, revolutionised Pakenham’s retail landscape. Mr Close announced he would not be seeking re-election to council in the Gazette edition of Friday 10 August. An advertisement in the same edition announced his intention to open an auction mart. “Ladies and gentlemen, I have great pleasure in bringing to your notice that it is my intention to open an Auction Mart in Pakenham,” the advertisement read. “As a business venture I hope that it will benefit the community, and I will be pleased to have your valuable support.” Mr Close certainly got that support, with a huge crowd turning out for the opening on 11 October 1917. A Gazette article described opening day as “a decided success”. “There was a very large attendance, numbering some hundreds, and the Mart and its surroundings presented a very busy appearance,” the report read.

Investing in their Paky future By Rebecca Skilton Making the shift from Patterson Lakes, Julia and Matt Ovens are set to be two of the newest residents welcomed to the Pakenham community. Following months of house-hunting, the couple are looking to settle into their Cardinia Lakes home later this month and with moving day in their sights, the Ovens admit they’re excited to begin the next chapter of their new lives. “We were looking for somewhere to make a home for ourselves,” Julia said. “Patterson Lakes was out of our budget but we still wanted somewhere with a community feel and we felt that Pakenham had that to offer. “We’d been looking in different suburbs for about three months but had been visiting Pakenham every weekend to check out the cafes, the lifestyle and the coffee houses prior to deciding on buying there. “I’d been to Pakenham years ago when it was just a country town. Matt had also visited for work and liked the area. “We also did our research and discovered that the area had won a lot of awards.” Purchased through Barry Plant Pakenham, the Ovens' new spacious home features four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a two car garage. And, as Julia explained, not only has their new property got enough room for the couple and their pet rabbit, but it will also allow both Matt and Julia to continue living a comfortable life while maintaining their hobbies

Dentist likes the country roots By Narelle Coulter When the opportunity arose to buy well-known Pakenham business Pakenham Dental Surgery, Dr Alan Zhang jumped at the chance. Despite being born and bred in Melbourne, he was drawn to Pakenham’s roots as a country town. “I wanted to be close to town, but be based in a place that still has that country feel,” he said. Dr Zhang said he admired Pakenham’s core country values and “good honest people”. Pakenham Dental Surgery was established in the 1970s by Dr Howard Hocking. Dr Hocking and Dr Zhang are joined by Dr Nilla Pradolin who has been with the practice for nearly three decades. Dr Zhang’s aim is to become as well known in the area as his two colleagues. “Although I might have taken over the whole business, they remain the face of the surgery. It’s about me slowly introducing myself to the area but maintaining the old faces.” Dr Zhang said he wasw keen to make Pakenham Dental Surgery known as the “friendly dentist”. “I like dentistry because you get to meet a lot of people in our day-today duties. Every day there are certain challenges. There is nothing boring or mundane about it. “For me I’ve always had an eye for detail and attention to detail so (dentistry) catered for my personality type and what I was looking for in a career.

Dr Zhang studied dentistry in Queensland before heading to Hobart for his final year placement.
After graduating, he decided to come home to Victoria taking up a position with a practice with surgeries in
Myrtleford and Bright. He was there for five years and got to know and like country life. “The hustle and bustle never really did it for me. I guess it’s also different patient base. I really enjoyed practising with that patient base.” Dr Zhang also owns a surgery in Heyfield. He said he had been impressed by how friendly people are in Pakenham and how varied the town’s population is. “There are a lot of young people and housing estates coming up. There are going to be a lot of new people come in the area, which will give a lot of life to this place.” When he’s not fixing teeth, Dr Zhang likes cooking and hiking. He said he was working his way through the restaurants and cafes of Officer, Berwick, Pakenham and Beaconsfield. He calls Pakenham Dental Surgery his “forever business”. “In terms of modernisation there are always little bits we can do to keep evolving and offering the latest treatments. But at the end of the day it’s about maintaining that persona service and the family values. “It’s about being known as a family dentist and someone you can call upon in times of need. “Realistically, people are coming to see us about their teeth, but we are there to see them as a person. It’s about building those long-lasting relationships.”

Around town safe and sound Pakenham Taxis has been safely delivering passengers around Pakenham since 1946. Founder Reg Maloney started with one car, a 1946 Ford sedan. He successfully built up the business, handing it over to the Dineen family in 1997. Co-ordinator Des Mattei said the business had grown in line with Cardinia Shire’s booming population. Mr Mattei is now in charge of 11 cars. When the Dineens took over in 1997 the business had three cars on the road. Today’s fleet comprises three station wagons, four sedans and four wheelchair taxis. Mr Mattei said the business was proud to offer a high proportion of wheelchair taxis, while the station wagons were popular with customers doing their grocery shopping, those with mobility issues and those on their way to the airport. All Pakenham Taxis are fitted with GPS navigation systems and mobile data terminals.
Mr Mattei said 70 per cent of Pakenham Taxi trips are within Cardinia shire. The longest trip he has personally driven was a return trip from Pakenham to Bairnsdale. The trains had stopped running and V/Line hired taxis to get passengers homes. The fare was $600. Pakenham Taxis employs 30 drivers. They service Officer, Pakenham, Pakenham South, Pakenham Upper, Nar Nar Goon, Maryknoll, Tynong, Garfield, Garfield North and Vervale. Everybody who works for the firm lives in Cardinia shire. Mr Mattei started with the company 17 years ago as a driver. “I’ve never driven for anyone else,” he said. “I like the flexibility. If I needed to do something during the day I would work a night shift.” He said working in Pakenham had “changed a lot” since he started driving. “It’s so hard to get around the town now with the traffic, especially at school times.
“To get from one end to another used take five minutes. Now it takes 15. During those peak times it is harder to provide taxis. The drivers just get stuck in gridlock.” He said the taxi industry still had one advantage over rivals like Uber. “We’ll still be around when Uber all go home which seems to happen on a Friday and Saturday night. We are busy between 2am and 3am in the morning. “We are always here and we always do the best we can.” Mr Mattei said taxi drivers also had the advantage of being able to form professional relationships with their passengers. “One of the most significant things we do as drivers is build up relationships with passengers. “Some customers like to have the same driver pick them up all the time. “If a customer wants a specific driver we do our best to send that driver.” To book a taxi visit www.pakenhamtaxis.com.au or call 5941 1138.

Wild ride for hot shot couple Hot on the heels of its recent sell-out production of The Wizard of Oz, the Cardinia Performing Arts Company (CPAC) is proud to be bringing the Tony nominated, 2011 Broadway musical Bonnie and Clyde to Pakenham this month. This true story of the infamous couple is retold with new energy and set to an exciting and unexpected score. The story revolves around two sweethearts who meet and fall in love during the Great Depression. Waste goes under new management As residents become more and more conscious of their personal impact on the environment, it’s important people have confidence in local waste management services. Operated for more than a decade by the local Atkins family, the Cardinia Waste and Recyclers transfer station, located just off the Princes Highway in Pakenham, has been acquired by leading Victorian scrap metal company Future Metals Recycling. With depots in Dandenong, Hallam and Shepparton, privately owned Future Metals Recycling is committed to reduc-
ing its environmental impact throughout its comprehensive waste management activities. It is also an accredited carbon neutral business. Managing director Tyrone Landsman said that since taking over the Cardinia Waste and Recyclers transfer station and Pak Bin Hire in late 2016, Future Metals Recycling had modernised all operating equipment and made substantial efficiency improvements to bring it into line with its sustainability policy. In exciting news for the region, the company has plans to significantly improve the infra-
structure of the transfer station over the next 12 months. “We will be spending more than $3 million on the project and, importantly, it will create local jobs during the construction phase,� Mr Landsman said. “The Atkins family was very involved in the community and we’re committed to keeping that local involvement going.� Future Metals Recycling currently recovers and recycles a large proportion of waste coming on site and the planned Cardinia Waste and Recyclers project will further increase its recycling ability to reduce waste going to landfill.
The Art Show Pakenham is seeking fresh faces who have a love of art to bring their own creative flair to the annual exhibition. The show, previously tied to the beloved Yakkerboo Festival, has helped many up-and-coming artists to find an audience for the past 42 years. It has also exposed a variety of art mediums to the Cardinia community and offered participants the chance to snap up one-of-a-kind pieces created by locals. Just months after the successful 2017 show, planning is already underway for the May 2018 event, and the art show committee is hoping to attract some new members with their own ideas. “We are looking for people who love and appreciate art to join our committee, to bring new ideas, a fresh approach and keep the annual art show vibrant and exciting,� Art Show Pakenham Committee President Jillian Ronald said. No set skills are essential, but a love of art is a must. “Some of the skills you can bring or learn on committee include graphic design and publishing, data entry, liaison with artists and sponsors, grant application writing, bookkeeping and curation of an art show,� Ms Ronald said. Oscar Smith was Pakenham’s business pioneer. The former Swedish sailor travelled the world twice and chose to settle in Pakenham when the town was based at the junction of Princes Highway and Toomuc Creek, next to the Latrobe Inn. When he died, aged 78, the Gazette printed this glowing tribute in its edition of 4 October, 1935.
Our business pioneer It is with feelings of the deepest regret that we record the death of Mr Oscar Smith, who for more than half a century was one of the best-known and most popular men in Pakenham. For some months past, Mr Smith had been very ill and his death on Tuesday last was not unexpected; but it nevertheless cast a gloom over the whole district in which he had been for so long a familiar figure. Born in Gottland, Sweden, 78 years ago, Mr Smith as a lad served his apprenticeship at the blacksmithing and coach-building trade. Then at an early age he answered the call of the sea - and adventure - and spent the next few years of his life as a sailor on “windjammers” and travelled twice around the world before he finally came to Australia and decided to make his home here. Soon after his arrival in the colony, Mr Smith came to Pakenham and in 1881 established a smithy here. On 23 June 1883, Mr Smith was married to Miss Elizabeth Flower of Pakenham and Mr and Mrs Smith were the recipients of hearty good wishes and congratulations from many friends
when they celebrated their golden wedding two years ago. In the early eighties (1880s), Pakenham was little more than a “canvas town”, some 300 men being then employed at Henty’s quarry getting out metal for the Gippsland railway line. Mr Smith often recalled interesting sidelights on Pakenham’s history, a subject on which there was no-one better qualified than he to speak. Upon the time of the first land sale - about 1881 - there were only two buildings in what is now Pakenham East. From then on the growth of the little township was slow but sure. Mr Smith was one of the principal workers in the move for progress and at the time he won for his coach-building and blacksmithing business a reputation which attracted him customers from a wide area of Gippsland. In the nineties (1890s) he had six men employed and at that time refused an offer of 1500 pounds for the business. The depression following the burst of the land boom affected business in Pakenham, as elsewhere, but Mr Smith was one who, with characteristic cour-

For a few years Pakenham remained stationary, then the wheels of progress moved slowly again, Mr Smith figuring among the big-hearted workers
who thought no effort too great if it would help to advance the interests of local affairs. With advancing age, Mr Smith in recent years relinquished to a large extent active association with public and sporting bodies. Nevertheless he remained up to the time of his last illness a liberal supporter of them all. He was known over a wide area of Gippsland and his jovial and kindly nature and demand for straight dealing in business won for him friends innumerable. His death snaps a link with the past and Gippsland loses a pioneer who saw much of her progress not so much as an onlooker as a participant and worker for it. Many friends of the deceased gentleman were present at the funeral on Wednesday afternoon to pay a sad tribute of respect to one whom they will greatly miss. Rev E.J. Dodd conducted an impressive service at the graveside and the mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr John Grant, who was a business associate and personal friend

But as Bree explained, it’s the expert assistance and guidance given by the Pakenham produce team that has kept customers coming back for more than four decades. “We hire staff on the basis that they’re knowledgeable within their department,” Bree said. “This means people can come in and ask questions and we can give the right advice. “A lot of the times you go into stores and the people serving are just shop assistants whereas we like to promote ourselves as qualified, experienced and knowledgeable.” As Bree explained, the wealth of knowledge within her staff members is evident, with a number of members actively involved within their selected department or having undertaken training in order to provide the best possible solutions for their customers. “One of our members, Tracey, is in pet care and animal health and is also a vet nurse,” Bree said. “We also have Sarah who’s been here for over 10 years and has done a lot of training through different departments.

McGregor Road’s long dormant pedestrian lights are now activated. The lights, just outside Pakenham’s Heritage Springs Shopping Centre, were installed at the beginning of 2017 following community lobbying, and were expected to be operating by the commencement of the school year. However, an undetermined hold-up saw the lights remain dormant for seven months. The delay frustrated numerous community members, including Drive2Drive instructor Elaina Haig, who couldn’t understand why the switch couldn’t be flicked. “I just don’t get why it’s taking so long. They’re sitting there ready to go - switch them on,” Ms Haig told Star News in May. In late July, an AusNet spokeswoman
said the lights were ready for activation, and it was “up to the council” to notify the power company when it wants the lights turned on. At the time, Cardinia Shire Council’s team leader of engineering, Cathal O’Loughlin, said council had requested AusNet connect power to the signals following their installation in January. He confirmed activation was expected within the month, and two days short of the deadline, the lights were switched on. Ms Haig was the first to use the crossing on Tuesday afternoon, after being instrumental in their installation. She described the signals activation as “a miracle”. “It’s really good ... it’s been such a long time coming. Hopefully, it makes it a lot safer for school children and the general public to cross the road,” Ms Haig said.

Eve Conroy is turning 100 this month, and to celebrate members of the Pakenham bingo group held a party at the Senior Citizens Centre. Eve was born in Kensington, Melbourne, on 17 August, 1917. The eldest of seven, Eve has worked in a variety of jobs including book binding, millinery, Sunday school teaching, assisting her mother making jockey silks, and the most recent being a TAB clerk. She was also a regular, very well-dressed race goer. After marrying, she moved to Clayton South where she lived for 42 years, raising her three children. Eve also has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Moving to Pakenham 18 years ago, Eve immediately joined the Pakenham Bowling Club and the Senior Citizens Club, where she made new friends easily. She became an expert at making home-brewed beer over some 40 years, which, she says, enabled her to save money for her holidays. A well-seasoned traveller, Eve went on her first cruise in 1976 on the original Fairsky. That gave her the taste for cruising, and over the course of the next 38 years she went on a total of 23 cruises. Visiting places such as Dubai, Alaska, New Zealand, all the South Pacific islands and China- where she climbed the Great Wall- and many other cities around the world.

Autistic kids have hope The prayers of a young family have been answered by the work of Pakenham’s Irabina Autism Services. After their son Jake was diagnosed with severe autism at just 18 months old, Lisa and her husband’s world was turned upside down. What to do? Where to go next? These were the questions this young family faced. After months of dead-end appointments with various therapists, doctors and paediatricians, Lisa was feeling desperate and frustrated by the lack of progress that Jake was making. That’s when they found Irabina in Pakenham, and the couple haven’t looked back since. “Irabina has changed our lives, I’m so glad we found them,” Lisa said. Irabina is a not-for-profit organisation that helps families adapt to the challenges of living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Lisa’s family travel three times a week from Moe to Pakenham, where Jake, 4, receives individualised applied behaviour analysis (ABA) therapy. “It’s not just good for Jake but the whole family. “We feel like we’re finally on track, and actually have a path now because we’re all working to support the same goal.” “We get to meet other families and be around a community of people who understand. “It’s a comfort to know we’re not alone” Lisa said. Irabina has a specialist team of speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers, special education teachers and education assistants, all who are experts in assisting families and children affected by ASD.
Irabina head psychologist Jose Molina, who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, has been working closely with Jake, and highlighted the need for families to be aware of early intervention. “There are a surprising number of professionals and paediatricians who suggest that parents ‘wait it out’ when they suspect something might be happening for their child. “I can’t stress enough the importance of early intervention - it can be the key to unlocking a child’s full potential,” Dr Molina said. Dr Molina also discussed modern efforts to re-structure the archaic language used around autism spectrums. Rather than diagnosing autism in terms of severity, medical professionals are now framing it around how much assistance a person might need: with level one being ‘requiring support’, through to level three which is ‘requiring very substantial support’. This, in turn, means that for a young mother like Lisa, Jake’s condition isn’t so daunting. Dr Molina wanted families to be aware that there is a new National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) rolling out this year, which means funding won’t be cut when a child is seven as per the old scheme. “This means kids have room to grow and families can think in a broader, more continuous way,” Dr Molina said. Irabina is opening its doors to the community and hosting an open day on Saturday 19 August and Monday 21 August, 1.30 - 3.30pm on both days at 145 Henry Road, Pakenham. The open day will be a great opportunity for the local community to tour the facilities, talk directly with clinicians and find out more about the services Irabina provides.

Hope is flowing to overseas Retail students in Narre Warren put their marketing heads together to raise enough money for two water tanks for an overseas charity mission. The students at Narre Community Learning Centre recently staged a market day of about 20 stalls, selling art prints, succulents, pet rocks, messages in a bottle, bath bombs and baby bandanas. The event raised more than $900 that was presented to the Berwick-based charity Operation Hope on 9 August.
The students had only aimed for $450 to provide one water tank for a family in Swaziland through the charity. NCLC youth educator Daniella Maloney said the class was “blown away” with the market day’s success. “I know exactly where the (Operation Hope) money goes, with very little admin costs. “They work six months in Australia to fund the following six months living in Swaziland and they really make every dollar count.”

Dignity at stake Supermarket shoppers can do their bit as part of a monthlong charity drive for homeless and at-risk women. Coles outlets are collecting donated sanitary items for national charity Share the Dignity during August. The charity distributes sanitary products to women who are homeless, have fled domestic violence, live in remote Indigenous communities, poverty-wracked and drought-stricken regions. It estimates more than 9000 Victorian women are homeless. “The problem is greater than I ever imagined, with
more than 85,000 (Australian) women turning to homeless services last year,” Share the Dignity founder Rochelle Courtenay said. “We want to ensure that no woman ever has to choose between eating or buying sanitary products. “Access to sanitary items is a right, not a privilege. Socially speaking The Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook Page was buzzing following an explosive night at Casey Council where mayor Sam Aziz told councillor Rosalie Crestani to “grow up” after she abstained from voting in a motion regarding the Berwick Spring roundabout. At the meeting on 8 August, Cr Aziz accused Cr Crestani of abstaining after he refused to support her bid for the council to formally oppose marriage equality. The councillor’s antics did not wash well with members of the Casey community, and here is a sample of how our readers reacted: Graeme Hanigan: Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities. Appeal lost: mum jailed By Cam Lucadou-Wells
McKenzie felt an “eternal shame” for driving her daughter to the fight and failing to do more to stop it, Ms Munster said. The duration of the dangerous driving was short, just 30 metres and ended with McKenzie unsuccessfully trying to avoid contact, the court heard. McKenzie had since undertaken psychological counselling and an anger management course, and had suffered criticism and threats on social media. If jailed, she would lose her part-time job, the court was told. Prosecutor Leon Fluxman opposed a corrections order, saying the original jail term was “moderate, if not lenient”. At any point, McKenzie could have reflected as an adult and driven away. Instead, she chose to act in a criminal manner with young people in her car and young people standing by the road, Mr Fluxman said. Her actions had a profound impact on the victim and her family, he said. McKenzie was also disqualified from driving for 18 months.
Marjorie offers mobile mamograms By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne women are being urged to take advantage of BreastScreen Victoria’s mobile mammogram vehicle. The bright pink van, Marjorie, will be parked out the front of the Cranbourne Library until Friday 25 August, offering free breast checks to women in the area. BreastScreen Victoria CEO Vicki Pridmore said Marjorie was one of only two vans that travelled the country and offered a convenient option for women in Casey to have their
breasts checked. “This visit to Cranbourne has been organised to ensure women in this part of Melbourne have access to a potentially life-saving mammogram,” Ms Pridmore said. “We hope that bringing the van to Cranbourne will make it easier for all women to screen.” “Women will be well looked after by our experienced, senior radiographers and the vans use the highest quality digital radiography machines, ensuring that women receive the best service.”
Cranbourne has been identified by BrestScreen Victoria as an area that needs this service as over 5000 women aged 5074 did not have a breast screen between 2013 and 2015. Regular mammograms have been identified as the best way to catch any cancerous symptoms or breast abnormalities early when treatment is the most successful. Appointments for the Mobile Screening Service visit to Cranbourne can be made online at breastscreen.org.au or by calling 13 20 50.

Former Casey mayor Mick Morland could be set to be immortalised in an annual community scholarship in his name. Casey council is set to consult with the Morland family on how best to recognise the late councillor, who was fatally struck by a car in Berwick in June. In a motion on 15 August, Casey will also seek to name a suitable facility or feature after Mr Morland. The council will also seek to donate $25,000 to the philanthropic Casey Cardinia Foundation towards establishing a
Mick Morland scholarship towards a purpose reflecting his interests. The donation would come from the council’s 2016/’17 surplus. Cr Susan Serey, who was Mr Morland’s most recent ward colleague, said it was an apt way to recognise his 25 years of community service. Cr Amanda Stapledon said it was the most constructive way to pay tribute. “I think Mick would definitely approve.” Mayor Sam Aziz said the council would discuss the plan with the Morland clan to ensure their wishes were considered.
Since 2003, the Casey Cardinia Foundation has distributed more than $430,000 to community groups through its annual grants program. Foundation director Paul Thomas welcomed the fitting tribute to Mr Morland. “It’s a great initiative by the City of Casey remembering a man held in high esteem and who contributed significantly to the local community. “It’s a recognition of all the hard work that Mick did with the community. “It will be a great way to provide more assistance to the community through the foundation.”

On 20 March 2016, McKenzie had driven her daughter and four of her friends to meet and fight the victim. The two girls were former friends, whose falling out had escalated into abuse on Facebook, phone calls and texts. They fought for about 30 seconds during the altercation. After a stone was thrown at McKenzie’s car, she got out and was pushed during a confrontation with the victim. The victim and her friends walked away. McKenzie claimed she hadn’t expected to come across the victim and her friends again. She drove around a corner, saw them and then veered into a parking lane and hit the victim, tossing her over the car bonnet. She got out and asked if the victim was OK. The victim’s friends told her to leave, but she waited in her car for an ambulance to arrive. Defence barrister Julia Munster had sought a punitive and therapeutic community corrections order instead of jail.

A Pakenham mother of three who drove her daughter to a fight with a 14-year-old girl and then drove her car into the other girl has lost an appeal against her jail sentence. Jennifer Rose McKenzie, 34, was imprisoned for three months by County Court judge Jan Campton on 10 August, a confirmation of the original sentence which was handed down by Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in April. “It started with young girls behaving badly and ended with an adult behaving in a worse manner,” Judge Campton said. The judge said McKenzie’s moral culpability over the “disastrous” incident near Berwick railway station was high. A car in the wrong hands of someone angry and not in control of their emotions was a lethal weapon, he said. “As an adult she should never have participated in the dispute between the two girls. “She should never have drove her daughter to have a fight and she should have left the scene as soon as she saw what was going on,” he said. Judge Campton said the charge of dangerous driving causing serious injury usually led to jail terms longer than three months. McKenzie was lucky that the victim, who suffered sportending injuries and faced possible arthritis, was not more seriously injured. The judge also took into ac-

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Residents have flooded Melbourne Water with complaints over a plan to drain the plentiful lake at Troups Creek West Wetland. Shortly ahead of works, the water authority recently announced the plan to “reset” the retarding basin’s water level to improve filtration of stormwaters flowing into Port Phillip Bay. Ray Darbritz says the plan could reduce a picturesque, bird-attracting lake in a 16-hectare reserve to a swamp. The decade-old pond built at Drysdale Avenue, Narre Warren North, may shrink by about 60 per cent after the works, he said. “In Melbourne Water’s eyes it’s been a failure as a wetland, but it’s been a great success as a park.” Mr Darbritz feared the result may compare to a barren wetland built by Melbourne Water upstream that looked like the “arse-end of nowhere”. “It’s a puddle,” he said. Residents who frequently use the popular walking and jogging area have rallied to preserve the lake’s “natural beauty”. They have organised a petition, lobbied Casey Council, state MPs and the State Ombudsman to put a brake on the works. Mr Darbritz said the water authority failed to stick to its community policy by actively seeking public input into the project. Neighbours who walk the reserve were first notified in

But that isn’t the same as consultation, Mr Darbritz argues. “It is unfair and unreasonable to dramatically change the nature and look of a neighbourhood without first consulting the people affected.” Melbourne Water argues that the works are necessary to create a fully functioning stormwater treatment wetland as it was designed in 2003. In its current form, too much water had entered the wetland and wasn’t being released downstream. “The area covered by water will not change and there will still be areas of open water,” Melbourne Water’s senior project manager Aaron Broadway said. “There will simply be more aquatic plants to help filter stormwater.
“It’s a wonderful community asset, but it also has a job to do and these works ensure it can continue to protect our waterways for years to come, which benefits the environment and the whole community,” Mr Broadway said. According to a Casey Council report, Melbourne Water has agreed to work with the council and residents on a concept plan, including seating, interpretive signage, path networks and planting locations. “The works cannot be delayed as they have been tendered and a contractor has been appointed and is about to commence work,” the report stated. Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani said she hoped a compromise could be reached between residents and Melbourne Water. Works are expected to finish by January 2018.
Keeping up with the times is a necessity for stalwart Berwick College teacher Russell Kealey. In embracing change over the past 40 years, he’s forsaken the blackboard and chalk for a smart board and video production. He’s noted that respect for authority including teachers is no longer automatic from students. It has to be earned. And it’s usually earned from being fair to all students. Even police aren’t accorded the same respect as they once were, Mr Kealey said. “I don’t regret that has changed. That’s just part of the way society has changed. “As a teacher, you have to change with it.” In his pet subject of media studies, change is a constant not least for news outlets moving from print to digital. Kids no longer have to travel to an Education Department suite to edit movies. They do it on their phones. Mr Kealey wonders how his students will cope as the workforce gets more automated. Where will their jobs come from, he muses. He sees the growing prevalence of reported family violence. In any classroom, there are bound to be children facing horrendous domestic situations, he said. Mr Kealey was recently recognised for an enormous 40 years of classroom service by Education Minister James Merlino.

In that time, he’s established a media studies course as well as teaching English and humanities. He aims for friendliness but not to be his students’ friend. He wants enthusiasm from his students. “Once you can find that enthusiasm, you’re half-way there to achieving success.” Mr Kealey expects each of his students to achieve their best. Nothing more disappoints him than seeing a top kid resting on their laurels. Thinking of the future, what will stay the same in the teaching game? For him, there’s a timeless need to take interest in their students, to have a passion

for their subject. “They have to have a willingness to stick at it in the long term,” he said. “It’s a long time ago but I remember having a difficult time managing classes in my first years. “That can be quite daunting because you’re by yourself in the workplace. “You’re not in an office environment, not in a factory environment, not in a team or a group. “You are there to teach that class of kids. It’s quite solitary.” Off campus, he replenishes with gardening orchids, film festivals and an array of music listening. For the teacher who gives so much to excite his lessons, music gives him a chance to “go out” of himself.

Manufacturing, Scouting and the wider Casey community has lost a leading figure in Tom Hartley. The Endeavour Hills resident died on Tuesday 8 August at age 80 following a long health battle. He received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June. “A truly inspirational man with a lifetime commitment to family, Scouting, church and business,” a tribute from his family read. “He has left an amazing legacy.” A tribute from Scouts Victoria described Mr Hartley, its vice president, as “a great Victorian who inspired all with his generous contribution to helping build a better world”. “From local Scout Leader to Chairman of Scouts Victoria, Vice-President and life member, Tom gave 60 years’ service to Scouting,” it read. “We were honoured to share him with his family, business and church, and we’ll miss him greatly.” Mr Hartley was “absolutely thrilled” to receive the OAM nod, he told the Journal, and described the moment that started it all. He grew up in Leeds, England, and had a run-in with a vicar over some mischief-making. The ultimatum - join the choir or the vicar would take him home to his mum. “Being a coward, I joined

They told him they were Scouts and he was welcome to join. “I suppose it changed my life,” he said. “It taught me leadership and teamship, to be resilient, to care for other people and the will to succeed. “That put me in good stead to run a business.” Mr Hartley arrived in Australia in 1956 as a third-year apprentice toolmaker. He met wife Margo through the youth group at St James Anglican Church in Dandenong. Hilton’s beginnings were in 1976 “in a little tin shed” after Mr Hartley was twice retrenched. Today it employs hundreds
of people and is growing rapidly, and son Todd is at the helm. The company earned an induction into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2014 Mr Hartley joined the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Honour Roll, a nod reserved for individuals or organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to manufacturing excellence in Victoria. Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce inducted Mr Hartley into its Hall of Fame in 2015. Mr Hartley is survived by wife Margo, sons Mark and Todd, daughter-in-law Michelle and granddaughters Leni and Zara. He will be farewelled at St James’ Anglican Church in Dandenong at 2pm on Friday 18 August.
Works have begun on a hightechnology school in Berwick to prime about 21,000 highschool students for the future. Deputy Premier James Merlino helped turn the first sod of works at the Casey Tech School site on 15 August. The appointment of experienced teacher and curriculum leader Ben Jenkinson as the school’s inaugural director was also announced. The school will skill-up students from 21 secondary schools in the region in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for “high-tech jobs of the future”. “Seventy-five per cent of new jobs will require skills in maths and science,” Mr Merlino said.
“These are the skills we have to deliver to our young people.” The Casey school will be the largest of the 10 schools built across Victoria as part of a $128 million project. It will be a free-of-charge resource that’s accessible to 21,000 students a year as part of their schooling. They will be taught biomedical technology, health and medical tech, and high-tech manufacturing, with help from Chisholm Institute and industry allies such as Successful Endeavours and St John of God Hospital. VCE students will receive masterclasses in either physics or chemistry, Mr Merlino said. The two-storey building with a biomed lab, virtual reality lab as well as video and digital media studios will be
a shared hub built on “neutral turf” at Chisholm Institute on Kangan Drive. The project’s architect Robert Pahor said the design aimed to offer an open and welcoming environment for students. “It’s all about the sharing of information, not keeping it to yourself. “It should be an exciting building and one that students will want to come back to.” Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said the state-of-the-art facility would provide new opportunities for young people in the south-east. “The appointment of Ben Jenkinson is an important step forward as we work towards opening Casey Tech School next year.” The Tech School is expected to open mid-2018.

Cannons Creek residents had their concerns raised in a Casey Council meeting by Councillor Geoff Ablett. Cr Ablett raised a notice of motion that would see the concerns of the Cannons Creek Residents’ Association specifically addressed when the council developed the Cannons Creek town plan. Residents raised a number of concerns in their township that they feel have been overlooked by planning and statutory authorities. Concerns include a lack of regular cleaning of roadside rubbish, road maintenance, weed management on Parks Victoria and DELWP land and roaming cats and dogs. When raising the motion at the 15 August council meeting, Cr Ablett said meeting with residents of Cannons Creek gave him a good insight into the issues the small community was facing. “It was great to get down there and look through those things,” he said. “The main problem is the Parks Victoria land; they don’t do a good job of spraying the weeds and that is causing huge issues.” Cr Ablett did say however that many of the concerns residents had could be addressed by council directly. “Then the camping signs and other things we can do to is a task for the town plan that fits in with the Green Wedge strategy,” he said. “Cannons Creek should have a town plan that makes it better for the future of the town.” “They are very energetic people who want to get these things done, and we have a responsibility to plan a great township for the future.” The council unanimously passed a resolution that will see council officers meet with the residents' association to further discuss the issues raised and find the best ways to address them.

Bingo, and hello winner Casey Cardinia Libraries have awarded the winner of their inaugural Book Bingo competition a first-prize pack of a book and tickets to the Melbourne Writers' Festival. Narre Warren resident Sue Brown filled in her bingo card by reading books described in each square that the library set out. Casey Cardinia Libraries’ information services co-ordinator, Michelle McLean was honoured to present Sue with the first place prize, as well as runners-up Pam Miller from Pakenham and Errol De Niese also from Narre Warren. Ms Brown said she was thrilled with the opportunity to go to the Melbourne Writers’ Festival and is looking forward to attending a panel session featuring an author that her book group had recently read. De Niese said he enjoyed discovering books and authors he wouldn’t usually choose, and admitted his motivation for getting involved came from his wife, who urged him to read more. GUIDE MAT SUCKLING DIRECTOR OF RMS HOMES Walking into a display home can be daunting. There is a very small percentage of builders out there (and by small, I can only think of one!) that actually include everything in a home. And by everything, I mean inside the home and outside the home! If you are hunting for a price point because you need to meet a specific budget, it is important to know what is going to cost you big money. For example, a driveway can cost upwards of $4000 for a simple plain concrete driveway. A fence can be the most expensive per lineal meter item! Right now bank finance is “cheap” interest rates are low which means, based on historical standards, repayments are quite low. While changes have occurred they are good ones - forcing people to pay off the principal of their loan while also managing interest is a positive thing. So, keeping this in mind, it is much easier and more affordable to include the items which will be very expensive for you later. Be mindful, however, that builders who choose to sell you a shell will charge you significantly more to add in these items later. This is where they make most of their money. So, when you get seduced by a low ball base price for a 20+ square design,
keep in mind that the slab grade they have included in their advertised price is going to need to be upgraded on your site. If you thought you were getting stone bench tops, think again. And if you want them you will know you are paying for them. So, where can we avoid all this inclusion heartbreak? Let’s go back to the start - in the display. When you sit down with whichever builder after walking through their house, you need to ask a very important question - what is the ‘as displayed’ price? When they give you the price, ask them if a driveway, a fence, the façade and the slab are included in that base price. Ask the builder if they put noggins behind their toilet and towel rail holders. Ask them how many coats of paint are included internally. If you expect to pay peanuts for a house, chances are you’ll get one fit for a monkey. Ask the right questions at the start and you’ll get all the information you need to make a smart decision later.

kids get a dose of book magic By Victoria Stone-Meadows As primary schools around the state celebrate Book Week, students from all over are dressing up as their favourite characters for the annual parades. Tooradin Primary School was no exception as students came to school dressed as everything from Harry Potter, to Minions, to The Cat in the Hat. Families of the students came along to the Book Week parade and will be sticking around for the week to hear students read from their favourite stories. Grandparents of students are invited on Thursday 17 August to share in classroom activities and the school Book Fair. Each day during Book Week at Tooradin a passage from a mystery book will be read and the classes have to try to guess together the title and author - book prizes will be awarded to one winning class each day. Well-being co-ordinator at the school, Rachel Davis, said Book Week was always a magical time for the students. “It is always a wonderful atmosphere to have the whole school immersed in a love of such a wide variety of literature - amazing books never lose their magic,” she said.

The retiree, who chose to remain anonymous, took home a whopping total of $723,182 when her ticket struck in two separate draws. She bought the winning fivegame marked System 7 entry from Lynbrook Village News and Lotto at the Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre. The woman said she had been celebrating all weekend after finding out she had won. “I wasn’t overly excited until I got this phone call. My sister won TattsLotto years ago, and she told me I’d get the call to confirm, so I’ve been waiting,” she said. “We celebrated a little bit hard last night, you can’t believe the excitement there was in this house yesterday - oh my God. Too much champagne.”

Future Metals Recycling is investing heavily in its Cardinia operation.
Waste under new management As residents become more and more conscious of their personal impact on the environment, it’s important people have confidence in local waste management services. Operated for more than a decade by the local Atkins family, the Cardinia Waste and Recyclers transfer station, located just off the Princes Highway in Pakenham, has been acquired by leading Victorian scrap metal company Future Metals Recycling. With depots in Dandenong, Hallam and Shepparton, privately owned Future Metals Recycling is committed to reduc-
ing its environmental impact throughout its comprehensive waste management activities. It is also an accredited carbon neutral business. Managing director Tyrone Landsman said that since taking over the Cardinia Waste and Recyclers transfer station and Pak Bin Hire in late 2016, Future Metals Recycling had modernised all operating equipment and made substantial efficiency improvements to bring it into line with its sustainability policy. In exciting news for the region, the company has plans to significantly improve the infra-
structure of the transfer station over the next 12 months. “We will be spending more than $3 million on the project and, importantly, it will create local jobs during the construction phase,” Mr Landsman said. “The Atkins family was very involved in the community and we’re committed to keeping that local involvement going.” Future Metals Recycling currently recovers and recycles a large proportion of waste coming on site and the planned Cardinia Waste and Recyclers project will further increase its recycling ability to reduce waste going to landfill.

Round 1 to Warriors By Russell Bennett If Saturday night’s game at ‘The Colosseum’ was a boxing bout, the Pakenham Warriors were in desperate trouble in the sixth round - on the ropes with broken ribs and a badly swollen right eye. But what happened next was befitting of a ‘Rocky’ screenplay. Brent Russell’s Big V Warriors refused to give in - refused to succumb to that one, knockout blow from Craigieburn. Instead, they bounced back off the ropes spurred on by the deafening roar of the 500-strong home crowd to land a huge counter left hook, a crunching right uppercut, and a knockout roundhouse of their own to win in the 12th. Brad Szalek’s dagger corner three was the left hook; Trent Lee’s long-range bomb from feet beyond the arc as the shot clock expired was the uppercut; and Josh Bjelan’s lay-up in the closing seconds was the roundhouse as Pakenham turned an 18-point deficit at one stage into an eight-point win to go up 1-0 in their best of three semi-final series against the Eagles. Staggeringly, Craigieburn failed to score a single point in the final 5:50 of game time, while in that same period Pakenham transformed a 13-point deficit into an eight-point win, 73-65. A series of high-percentage looks throughout the second term helped the Eagles extend their lead, while the Warriors struggled to finish at the other end. Though Bjelan continued his outstanding form, displaying his impressive array of offensive post moves, the home side couldn’t buy a bucket from the outside in the early going. Bjelan had 16 of Pakenham’s 26 points at the half as they trailed by 10. Super versatile forward James Topp urged his side to push the tempo more in the second half in the hope of finding easier looks at the basket, while Russell blasted his players for playing like they had the lead and simply relying on their talent to see them over the line. “This is game one, but we have to treat it like it’s game three!” he implored. Though Bjelan continued his dominance in the low-block to start the third, the Eagles got their perimeter game firing and led by 16 points, 47-31, just three minutes into the second half. Pakenham’s only chance to get back into the game was on the defensive end, and twin towers Bjelan and Brad Bridgewater loomed as the keys. The Warriors then made it a clear focus to try and finish at the rim or at least be rewarded with trips to the charity stripe, and their intensity lifted. It started at the defensive end with the huge, vocal home crowd riding every play. Turnovers and costly fouls from the Eagles meant that they couldn’t land that decisive knockout blow. The Warriors got within six points late in the term as Bridgewater (10 points, 7 boards) started to come into his own, but the Eagles responded and stretched the margin back to 12 with 10 minutes to play. There was a clear lift in intensity from the Warriors in the first five minutes of the last, yet they struggled to make any real inroads on the scoreboard in those opening stages. But a three-pointer from Eagle Robert TollerBond with 5:50 remaining proved to be their last bucket of the contest as the Warriors’ desperation sparked them to life. Strong finishes at the rim from Topp (11 points) and skipper Ben Gaze (10 points) were followed by a high-percentage look from Bjelan (25 points, 7 boards) with the defense giving him too much space; and Szalek’s corner three - which gave Pakenham the lead 66-65 with just under 1:50 left.
Cody Fredrickson and his Warriors team-mates refused to give in against Craigieburn. Trent Lee’s three from more than a foot behind the arc with just over a minute remaining put Pakenham up 69-65, before another Bjelan layup put the side up 71-65 with just over 20 seconds remaining. The Warriors’ defensive spark was vital in their win, but so to was their lift in tempo offensively. The Eagles simply couldn’t match it. The lasting image from the game, which ended with Pakenham outscoring Craigieburn 25-5 in the final quarter, was from the Warriors team song - sung at centre court arm-in-arm with their army of loyal supporters. If the Warriors are to close out this series next weekend at Craigieburn, they’ll need to bring that same passion and fire with them to spur their boys on again. “Way to go 1-0 but our job isn’t done,” Russell said in the change rooms after the song. “We have to go there now and play on their court. “Defense is what got it done tonight, and that’s the finals intensity we need moving forward. “Now, we must go 1-0 one more time.”

Double chance for ’Pies By David Nagel Narre Warren is looming as a serious threat to claim its first premiership since 2013 after the Magpies continued their stellar run of form with a 42-point victory over Doveton. The Magpies’ first victory at Robinson Oval since 2014 secured a coveted double-chance and confirmed Heath Black’s team as the genuine article ahead of this year’s finals series. They have now won five on the trot, including victories over fellow finals contenders Beaconsfield (79 points), Cranbourne (19 points) and now the Doves. Only Berwick will take a winning feeling against the Magpies into September, but even the Wickers may have inadvertently helped with the impetus for this late-season surge. They thumped the Magpies by 49 points in a one-sided contest at Edwin Flack Reserve in round 12. “We had stern and open words after that game, the players were left in doubt as to my feelings,” Black said. “And, while we can’t quite put our finger on it, things have definitely turned around since then. Cranbourne led by a point at three-quarter time before kicking four goals to two in the final term to lock up second place on the ladder. Khaled Kandakji kicked three for the winners who had Jordy Bertrand and the Osborne brothers -Brandon and Glenn - play great games in defence. Kyle O’Sullivan and Daniel Galante tried hard for Beacy who had firstgamer Jackson Bramich kick a goal with his first kick in senior footy. By David Nagel FINALS fever has come a week early for this year’s premiership contenders with two magnificent games set to round out the South East home-and-away season this Saturday. Cranbourne and Doveton will slug it out at Casey Fields in a precursor to their elimination final at Berwick on 27 August - but even that clash pales into insignificance compared to the main event on the card. Narre Warren and TooradinDalmore, the two dominant teams of the season, level on points, going head to head at Kalora Park with the minor premiership and a week’s rest on the line. Tooradin coach Kelly Andrews knows there’s a huge pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. “We definitely want top spot, we want the week off to freshen up and to fine tune our set ups with an extra training session or two,” Andrews said.
The Seagulls rounded out their preparations by making light work of Hampton Park, winning 55-27 at the Tooradin Rec. Reserve. Alex Duff (goal shooter) and Alex Maher (goal attack) set the scene for the Seagulls in the first quarter, while Ebony Dolan (goal defence) and Jess Maher (goal keeper) were equally adept at the defensive end. The Redbacks were never in the hunt but Brooke Kiely (goal keeper) and Karli Foster (GD) can hold their heads high after limiting the potential damage. The remainder of round 17 produced some great action, with Cranbourne’s one-goal win over Beaconsfield the star attraction. Cranbourne started magnificently, scoring only 11 goals in the first quarter, but restricting their thirdplaced opponents to just five goals for the term. The gun-duo of Tara Cecil (GK) and Sharni Lambden (GD) was back in business, making life extremely difficult for the like

When talented Kangaroos youngster Jesse Longmuir converted from the top of the goal-square, at the 21-minute mark of the third term, an upset looked on the cards - the Kangas 10-points ahead, 5.6 to 2.14. But the Wickers responded in style with early last-quarter goals to Tom Brennan and Harry Money, breaking the game open and keeping their perfect season intact. Berwick’s backline really stood tall when the pressure was on in the second half with Luke Sheppard, Ash Smith and Will Arthurson providing plenty of drive from half back. James Canty and Luke Smaluch were best for the Kangas, who finish with six wins for the season. And Tooradin brushed aside a plucky Hampton Park by 156 points at Westernport Oval. Andrew Dean kicked eight and Kyle Van Der Pluym seven for the Gulls who had Nick Lang on fire with five of his own. The Redbacks kicked four goals in the second term, clearly their best output for the season, with Tim Ziegeler slotting two. Pakenham had the bye.

Narre Warren produced a stunning third quarter effort to down Doveton 51-41 by 10 goals under lights at Robinson Oval. The Magpies led by three at half time before a 16-7 third term put the
issue beyond doubt. Chloe Phillips (GS) and Gabby Dwyer (GA) were sensational for the winners, while Chelsea Imanisani (GA) held the Doves attacking end together in the absence of Rhani Samason. Coach Liz Edwards (WA) was also impressive for the Doves. And ROC has momentarily jumped into sixth place on the ladder after winning its third game from its last four starts, 48-45, against Berwick at Starling Road. The difference between the teams was the third quarter, where players like Georgie Douglas (wing defence), Ash Barnett (C) and Courtney Linhart (GS) played some of their best netball for the season. Linhart scored 10 goals in the third term, stretching the Kangas out to a five-goal lead at the final break. Berwick lifted, through Sarah Nash (C), Itagia Amataga (GS) and Olivia Macente (WA) ... but the damage had already been done. Pakenham had the bye.
