Pakenham resident Mikayla Kennett has started a petition to make Pakenham’s Racecourse Road safer for families. “At this present time, Racecourse Road only has one suitable pedestrian crossing which is located near the milk bar on the corner of Racecourse Road and Cameron Way,” Ms Kennett said. “Although this crossing is suitable for pedestrian use, it is not suitable for the use of young families and needs to be upgraded to a more appropriate and safe crossing. “The crossing itself, is nothing more than a small road island for pedestrians to stand or wait at, in the centre of the busy traffic travelling at 60 kilometres per hour on either side. “For parents with prams or pedestrians using mobility aids, such as mobility scooters, walking frames, bicycles and so on, waiting on the road island can be both an uncomfortable and daunting experience when you feel one wrong move will mean the end of your life. “The only other crossing is a

lights crossing which is another 10-minute walk down the road, located at the Racecourse Road and Princes Highway intersection.” Ms Kennett doesn’t drive, which means that she has to navigate the busy traffic on foot. “I struggle to attend TAFE on time, because sometimes I will be left waiting for over 10 minutes to cross the road so that my son can attend childcare.” “The crossings need to be wide enough for families, prams and wheelchairs to wait safely.” Upon contacting the Cardinia Shire Council, Ms Kennett was told that the road did not belong to council and that it was an issue to be taken up with VicRoads. “We will take this feedback on board and over the coming weeks work with key community stakeholders to investigate any opportunities to improve safety for pedestrians crossing Racecourse Road,” a VicRoads spokesperson said. Ms Kennett has started an online petition, which can be found at www.change.org and will also be putting hardcopy versions in local stores and schools.

Little shop’s big donation By Kyra Gillespie The Pakenham Opportunity Shop distributed $90,000 to not-for-profit organisations within Cardinia Shire at their 2017 Annual General Meeting. The op shop commenced operation in Pakenham in 1959 and since then has been managed and staffed entirely by volunteers. “I love volunteering for the Pakenham Op Shop. The thing is, when you treat your volunteers well, they want to come back again the next year and help out. And that’s exactly what I do,” op shop volunteer Mary said. Among the many recipients was the Pakenham SES, which was given $7000 towards a replacement primary rescue truck. “Our current truck is very old and has been put together with different bits and pieces over the years. “The new truck will be so important in order for us to get out the door quickly in the event of an emergency. "We travel from the Dandenong Ranges as far out as Garfield and Westernport, doing hundreds of kilometres a day. :So a good truck is crucial to enable us to do our job properly. The cheque is very pleasing to us,” said Jeanine and Leesa from the Pakenham SES Unit. Jeanine and Leesa also stressed that the use of mobile phones while driving was one of the biggest contributors to accidents that the SES attended on today’s roads. Volunteer firefighter Roh from the Officer Fire Brigade was also blown away by the generosity of the op shop. “The funds donated to us will be used to buy new gas detectors. Our old ones don’t hold their charge so once we get to a job they are already flat.

The monster needs blood By Bonny Burrows The committee behind Pakenham’s Yakkerboo Festival is hoping to inject some fresh green blood into its team. With a number of its members recently stepping down after decades of service, the committee is looking to attract younger members with new ideas. Its remaining volunteers are hoping the fresh blood will inject new life into the festival, now 41 years old. Committee member and new mum Naomi Horsley said the only requirement to join was a love of Pakenham and the local community. “If I can do it, anyone can do it,” she said. Joining the Yakkerboo committee was a great way for the shire’s youth to engage with their local community, while obtaining experience in event management, Ms Horsley said. She believes the future of the festival is in the hands of the next generation. “We still at the heart want to keep it the way it is, but new ideas, new faces are always great,” Ms Horsley said. “I’d love to see it run for another 41 years, and some fresh ideas would be very good.” Those interested in going to Yakkerboo Festival committee are asked to come along to its annual general meeting, to be held on Wednesday 23 August at the Cardinia Club boardroom, Pakenham from 7pm. The Pakenham Bypass frog fence has collapsed once again, drawing criticism from motorists who have blasted it as “a farcical waste” of taxpayers’ money. The fence, built by VicRoads in 2008 to prevent the threatened, native growling grass frog from being run over on the Princes Freeway, has been destroyed in some areas, leaving the croakers exposed to the freeway’s traffic. It’s not the first time ‘the great wall’ has come down. In 2015, 700 metres of the fencing along Cardinia Road and McGregor Road was replaced at a cost of $200,000. Just two years later, the fencing has again collapsed at the McGregor Road inbound onramp. Pakenham resident David Connor described the fence as a joke. “For all of those residents who can remember the construction of the Pakenham Bypass and the fuss about how important the frog fence was, just take a look at the state of it now,” Mr Connor said. “A quick drive along the bypass will reinforce just what a farcical waste of taxpayers’ money that whole process was.” VicRoads was legally required to construct the fence, which runs adjacent

to ponds and breeding grounds used by the protected frog species along Cardinia Road and McGregor Road exists, under environmental protection laws aimed at saving the amphibian. When the fence was constructed in 2008, VicRoads Pakenham Bypass project manager Charlie Broadhurst told media that the road authority had the “responsibility to minimise the impacts on the plants and animals in the area, particularly threatened species, when building roads”. Mr Connor said for all “the fuss about how important the frog fence was”, nobody seemed to take responsibility for its maintenance. “The only victory I can see here was wasting time, resources and money,” he said. VicRoads Metro South East Director of Operations Michael Baker said fixing the fence was “complicated” due to federal environmental regulations. “We have recently submitted a proposal to the Australian Government to make changes to the fencing,” Mr Baker said. “Once the outcome of this proposal is known, we will repair the fencing.” The protective fencing was included in the total cost of the $242 million bypass project.

A walk in the park helps out By Victoria Stone-Meadows A Lynbrook man along with a team of friends and family will be taking a walk in the park later this month to raise money and support people in the community living with Parkinson’s disease. John McKenzie was diagnosed with Parkinson’s eight and half years ago and said he didn’t know much about the illness when he was diagnosed. Mr McKenzie and his wife Maria started their own peer support group for sufferers and their carers and Mr McKenzie said it was one of the best things he ever did. He said getting to know other people who shared common experiences with the illness had helped him deal with his own symptoms. “Most people are as ignorant about Parkinson’s as I was,” he said. “People think of Parkinson’s as old people that shake and while that’s the truth, it’s actually an incredibly complex condition that is intuitive as it progresses.”

“I think having information about the condition, what you can do, tips and tricks, advice, and sharing experiences is all quite comforting.” Mr McKenzie will be participating in Parkinson’s Victoria’s annual fundraising event ‘A Walk in the Park’ for the first time this year at Federation Square on Sunday 27 August. “I haven’t done it before but because I run this peer support group for Parkinson’s Victoria, I thought it was about time I practised what I preached,” he said. “So I tried to get a few people interested and I decided to get a few friends and family together to get us registered.” A Walk in the Park is Australia’s largest community event dedicated to improving the lives of people living with Parkinson’s and brings together those living with Parkinson’s, families, carers, health professionals, friends and supporters to create positive change. It was through running the peer support group and being involved with

Parkinson’s Victoria that Mr McKenzie found out about deep brain stimulation. Mr McKenzie will undergo this invasive surgery on Wednesday 9 August, where doctors will implant a medical device called a neurostimulator to send impulses through implanted electrodes specific targets in the brain. He said he would never have considered the surgery as a way of dealing with his symptoms if it weren’t for his involvement with Parkinson’s Victoria. “I went to a seminar they run, a kind of get together for people with deep brain stimulation or considering having it,” he said. “I was getting bad movement in my body that started to get worse and I was informed by Parkinson’s Vic that early intervention is better.” Mr and Mrs McKenzie are always hoping to expand their peer support group to others in the community who may be suffering in silence. Mr McKenzie said there was so much to be gained from sharing experiences with Parkinson’s and encouraged anyone who needs the support to

The first stage of the revamped Casey Stadium was officially opened by City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz on Sunday 6 August. The renovations to the formerly named Casey Indoor Leisure Centre have cost the City of Casey just under $18 million. The facility has had five new basketball and netball courts built, including a centre court for up to 1500 spectators, a cafe, piazza, and function space. However, the new stadium hasn’t been entirely without controversy. In June this year, Star News revealed that some sports such as beach volleyball and indoor soccer would not be offered at the new stadium. Former sports co-ordinator at the centre Adrian Vella, who ran the indoor AFL, soccer and beach volleyball for eight years, said it was made clear to him there was no room for these sports at the new centre. “They have re-purposed the use of all the areas we used in the centre,” he said.

The works of ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ Sam Childers have been unorthodox, perhaps violent. But his rescuing of countless children is a source of inspiration for local church leaders. The US-born Childers, who leads the Angels of East Africa aid organisation, is spreading his message in churches and schools in Hallam, Cranbourne and Cranbourne East in August. His life is undoubtedly chequered, as a former bikie and drug dealer. He turned his life around in church, building the largest orphanage in South Sudan and leading armed missions to rescue children from a rebel militia. As he built the orphanage amidst a death zone of murders and kidnappings, he famously slept under a mosquito net with a Bible in one hand and an AK-47 in the other. Despite the perils, Childers’s orphanage blossomed, feeding and housing more than 1000 children. He has since been the subject of the Hollywood film Machine Gun Preacher, and received the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice. His latest tour was held up for 20 months due to Childers’ visa being withheld by Australian immigration authorities. Among his stops will be Catch the Fire church in Hallam. Its pastor Daniel Nalliah said people would be inspired by the former “rough and tough guy” who “lays down his life to save children”. “It’s interesting that some of the

He at first was affronted by Indonesian Christians not “turning the other cheek” but arming themselves. “It’s a different environment. They were not going to stand back and let them rape their wife

and daughter and kill them.” Joel Cayzer, a senior minister at Turning Point church in Cranbourne, said he hoped Childers’ visit would encourage his church to be more missionary-minded. He said he’d have to think “very deeply” if he was in Childers’ situation in South Sudan and needed to resort to military tactics to protect others. “I admire the man for going over and helping the best he can. ‘He does more than pick up machine-guns.”

Mr Cayzer said he was looking forward to hearing Childers’ heart as he spoke of helping “the broken, the hurt and the poor”. It would be a preview glimpse for Turning Point’s youth mission to Uganda in December. Childers will speak at Catch the Fire church on 20 August, Lighthouse Christian School in Cranbourne on 24 August, 7pm and Turning Point church on 25 August, 6.30pm. Monash health funds Opinion By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Hospital will benefit from a statewide funding boost for Victorian hospitals, says Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley. Monash Health, which manages Casey and Dandenong hospitals and Monash Medical Centre, will receive $1.324 billion in 2017-'18 - up more than $79 million. It is a 20.5 per cent boost on its allocation in the last Liberal budget in 2014, the State Government claims. Under the statewide boost, hospitals will receive an extra $1.67 billion in the State Budget in the next four years. Ms Graley said the boost would ensure local residents had access to the highest quality care close to home. “We know that our hard-working and dedicated doctors and nurses do a remarkable job at Casey Hospital and this record funding boost will ensure they can continue to save lives and keep people healthy.”

This issue has long been debated in the community, and our readers had a lot to say about the issue: Ray Grainger: Good on you, Cr Crestani, for standing for traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Don’t buckle to those with no belief other than the world revolves around themselves! Hannah Stein: Gay people do not feel the world revolves around them, on this issue the world revolves around everyone but them. Becky Brandle: Do you realise that only 48 per cent of citizens in the City of Casey are Christian? Her opinions represent less than half of the area. Von Hoover: The 'sacred covenant of (biblical) marriage’ includes a man marrying his slave, marrying his concubine, marrying his widowed sister, a rapist marrying his victim, a man marrying multiple women, male soldiers marrying prisoners of war. This is the 21st century....we recently sent a probe to land on a comet! You want to take us back to the time when people cowered at night, terrified that the sun wouldn’t return the next morning. Marriage existed before your god was even invented! Becky Brandle: Marriage is one of the most “sacred covenants in human history”? What a crock! So it’s OK for a husband or wife to have an affair, or to even divorce but two people who love each other but are the same gender ruin the sacred covenant of marriage? Chris McLucas: Historically, marriage was more of a business transaction than anything else, bringing assets together, not a religious ceremony. Soccer’s shame Parents of Casey Comets players are threatening to quit the club after a junior soccer coach was stood down and suspended in the aftermath of an ugly incident at an under-10s match. Mike Somerville, the ex-coach of the Comets Hyenas side, was suspended for four weeks for misconduct by a Football Federation Victoria closed tribunal on 2 August. He was accused of inciting his players to misconduct by taking them to a kickboxing gym session at Sting gym days before the spiteful, abandoned match on 18 June. It is understood that both the Comets and the opposing side Peninsula Strikers had sought a life ban for Mr Somerville. The Comets had already dismissed Somerville as coach days after the incident. In a video of the kickboxing session, the instructor taught players how to employ “dirty tactics” out of the referee’s gaze. “Apparently, you’re playing a dirty side this week,” he said as he swung an elbow at a punching bag held to his side by Somerville. “The ref has to be away from your vision,” he told the players. At the subsequent game, a Comets player felled a Peninsula Strikers opponent with a tackle, and then spun and kicked the player in the back. Strikers coach Troy Hicks allegedly ran in from the sidelines and loudly remonstrated with the eight-year-old Comets player at close quarters. The father of the Comets player then entered the fray, pushing Mr Hicks away from his son. Up to a dozen adult spectators entered the pitch, and the game was abandoned at the 15-minute mark.

In his submission on the incident, Mr Somerville described Mr Hicks’ approach to the player as “unprofessional”, “disgraceful” and “hurl(ing) abuse and anger”. Mr Hicks submitted to the tribunal that he ran out on the pitch to protect his fallen player from further attack. “What are you doing? Stop it,” he allegedly told the Comets player. “I really think that if I hadn’t got in-between (the two boys) that the boy would’ve kicked (the Strikers player) again in the back or back of his head.” Mr Somerville, who had pleaded not guilty, is believed to have argued at the tribunal that he clarified the instructor’s advice later at the kickboxing session. He allegedly told his players that they ought to stick to playing football on the field. The tribunal is believed to have found Mr Somerville ought to have stepped in and objected to the instructor’s advice to the children earlier. Mr Somerville had denied to Star News in July that the “bonding” session for parents and children was “training my boys to be violent”. “To blame the kickboxing is just ridiculous. I’ve never had issues with the other boys. “The kickboxing lesson had zero to do with how the player behaved. He knows what he did was extremely wrong, but he doesn’t know why he did it.” Bashar Abuusba, the father of one of Mr Somerville’s players, said up to eight of the side’s 12 families would leave the Comets at the end of the season as a result of losing “trust” in the club. They were upset that the Comets had sacked Mr Somerville, but failed to lodge a complaint against Mr Hicks’ “violent action against children”. “Does that give me the right to run out on the field and abuse a player?

“For us, it’s about the incident on the field. That’s why it has made all of us angry.” Mr Abuusba said the kickboxing session and its social-media publication was a “mistake” that should be learned from. But there was no prepared attack on Strikers players, he said. He accused the Comets administration of seeking to protect itself from sanctions rather than support its coach. In a joint statement from the Comets and the Strikers, Casey denied of having prior knowledge of the kickboxing session. “Neither Casey Comets nor Peninsula Strikers JFC were charged with any offence. “Both clubs are satisfied that the tribunal has now assessed and resolved this issue. “Both clubs are working with the children affected, and will support/work with all local clubs and members to ensure ... a safe and enjoyable environment.” Football Federation Victoria had barred Star News from attending the hearing, and has not responded to many calls, texts and email inquiries from Star on the matter. It did not comment on the tribunal’s findings, nor did it make comment on the outcome. It also did not comment on its investigation of Mr Hicks, who did not return calls from Star News. FFV has a child safety policy, declaring a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse and that all children have a right to feel safe. According to the code of conduct, speaking to a minor in an “overly harsh, threatening, intimidating, shaming, derogatory, demeaning or humiliating” way is prohibited. An upcoming under-10s game between the Comets and the Strikers has meanwhile been cancelled.

Award for literacy programs Casey Cardinia Libraries has been awarded a best practice award for their delivery of literacy programs for early years. The judgement for the READ Accreditation encompasses all libraries in the state and CCL CEO Chris Buckingham said they took early years education very seriously. “Encouraging early literacy and lifelong learning are top priorities for us; reading is so important for everyone’s health and wellbeing,” he said. “We provide stimulating programs and events, lend books and create spaces where people can enjoy reading for free.”

CCL has specifically focused on delivering free and regular reading activities, and over the last financial year attracted more than 5129 children and their carers to Baby Rhyme Time. Tinies’ Time, a rhyme and book sharing session for toddlers up to three years old, welcomed 18,069 children and their carers and preschool Storytime at the library which hosted 12, 859 children and their carers. “We love seeing parents and children together in the library ... they bring energy and vitality. We want people to enjoy a fun, accessible and welcoming experience,” Mr Buckingham said.

Charity is kicking goals By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne-based education charity the ACE Foundation and Cranbourne Toyota have given students from three schools in the area a once in a lifetime AFL experience. On Friday 28 July, 24 students and three teachers from Hampton Park Secondary College, Cranbourne Secondary College and Cranbourne East Secondary College were whisked off to the MCG for what they thought was a day at the footy. However, on the journey to the stadium the students were given gift bags containing drink bottles, pens, mini footballs, Planet Ark T-shirts, and signed Marcus Stoinis posters. The surprises didn’t end there through, with the students and teachers being greeted at the MCG by Collingwood premiership player Ben Reid. From there the guests were taken on a tour of the Collingwood facilities by Mr Reid, which included time for selfies and a bit of kick to kick. The guests were then walked into the grounds of MCG to make their way to their seats to watch the Hawks take on the Swans. Students and teachers also had an opportunity to tour the underground and rarely seen areas of the stadium. A lucky and knowledgeable student from Cranbourne East Secondary won six medallion club tickets and two parking passes to the Collingwood and Melbourne game by answering questions correctly, in a quiz given by Mr Reid. These tickets were donated by Cranbourne Toyota. Teresa Muratore from the ACE Foundation said everyone had a great time and the students couldn’t have been happier.

Students from Casey were jumping for joy to be on ground at the MCG. “The screams, the excitement, the looks on their faces were so priceless,” she said. “They had a once in a lifetime AFL

experience attending the game, going onto the ground, they certainly got spoilt and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.”

The trip was made possible with the generous donation of the football tickets by Cranbourne Toyota and the hard work of the ACE Foundation.

Wetland works begin Works on the Troups Creek West Wetland in Narre Warren North are set to begin with Melbourne Water confirming upgrades will commence this month. Senior Project Manager Aaron Broadway said the works will not affect the wetlands’ footprint. “We know the community loves this wetland and we want to reassure them that the size and shape of the wetland will not change as a result of our upgrade works,” he said. “While there will be more plants in the wetland there will still be areas of open water in the wetland after the works are completed.” “In order to improve recreational use of the wetland, Melbourne Water will

also create a new, formal shared use path for across the wetland site.” Melbourne Water will be improving the wetland to allow the excess water in the drainage system will be able to be flushed downstream and water levels reduced. Mr Broadway said the improvements will see a better quality of stormwater in the wetlands. “By adding new plant life to better filter the water and improving the control of water entering and leaving the wetland, we hope to see this wetland treating stormwater as intended,” he said. “These improvements will reduce nitrogen levels, and help reduce pollution

in downstream waterways and Port Phillip Bay.” “Plants are an essential part of wetlands and are used to capture fine particles and trap pollutants. It is important plants are not inundated to excessive depths for too long, as this may kill the plants and reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.” Wetlands have their own unique ecosystem and provide food, water, critical habitat and breeding grounds for a large range of birds, frogs and mammals. The works are expected to take about five months to complete and nearby residents may notice some extra dust and noise in the area while the works are undertaken.

Nossal helps out Fijians By Cam Lucadou-Wells Nossal High School has pitched in to help restore school libraries in cyclone-devastated Fiji. The school recently donated more than 300 academic books to the Director of Library Services of Fiji, to be distributed to the island’s schools. Nossal High information resource centre director Kamla Reddy said the books were surplus to the high school’s needs and better used in Fijian schools. Last year, Nossal High also sent 200 books to Tavua College, which suffered massive damage during Cyclone Winston. Crew buoyed by film award By Victoria Stone-Meadows An award-winning Casey-based filmmaking crew is hoping to open more opportunities for people interested in film in the South East. Dhoom Films took home two awards at the 2017 Nice International Filmmaker Festival for their original production titled, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The film focuses on the lives of six young LGBTIQ people and their stories in coming out and finding acceptance with their peers. The film’s producer and one of the drivers behind Dhoom Films Saahil Luthra said it was an honour to travel to Europe for the award ceremony. “We got there, and we were selected for screenings and received for nominations for best supporting actress, best director, best film and best editing,” he said. “We ended up winning awards for Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for Laura Rigon.”

Mr Luthra said the crew couldn’t believe it when they were announced as winners. “We were just blank at first, and it took a minute to sink in that we won; I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I told our director Rhiannon Williams she was the reason we won, and she deserved it, but she was speechless.” Dhoom Films has been making films in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs for about eight years with studios and offices previously in Hampton Park and Cranbourne with the office now in Narre Warren. All the time given by producers, writers, directors and actors is all voluntary, and people are brought together for the love of filmmaking. Mr Luthra said he wanted to be able to use Dhoom Films to allow people in the community a chance to get their ideas off the ground. “With me as a producer, I want people who want to make films

to come to me and I want to help them and promote local talent,” he said. “There is not much opportunity in Australia for small filmmakers, and I want to have a big studio where I can get people involved and work on films as a team.” “I want to be able to work with people rather than for them or them for me; we have won these awards, and we are confident enough to make this happen.” Mr Luthra said he was really happy to be working with the people he was currently engaged with, and hoped he could continue to make films with local passionate people. “I am really proud of my team; Rhiannon gave me the script, and we worked together; all the actors devoted their time, and it was such a big project,” he said. “We are working on a few scripts, and want to do an international film; something youth based, and with more local actors involved.”

A light aircraft crash in Clyde North last week has left one man dead and one in a critical condition. The plane came down in paddocks near the corner of Pound and Hardys Roads in Clyde North at about 10.40am on Thursday 3 August. Emergency services were rushed to the scene, where it

took crews just over an hour to free one of the men from the wreckage. Both men were flown by air ambulances to the Alfred and Royal Melbourne Hospitals in critical condition. Victoria Police confirmed a 19-year-old Chinese national died in hospital as a result of his injuries on Sunday 6 August. A 25-year-old man from Ne-

wry, just outside of Maffra in the Gippsland area, remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. It is still unclear what caused the plane to fall from the sky and crash-land, but police and Recreation Aviation Australia say their investigation is ongoing. Recreation Aviation Australia will also prepare a report for the Coroner.

New campus, big plans By Bonny Burrows With a new campus and a new leader, Federation University (FedUni) has big plans for its Berwick campus, come 2018. The university, which this year shares Monash University’s Clyde Road campus, will formally take over the site next year. Federation University’s first female Vice-Chancellor, Helen Bartlett, is overseeing the university during its transition period, and said the procurement of the Berwick campus made sense for the university’s vision. “This campus was a very obvious and sensible acquisition for the university, that’s really trying to build its presence in this eastern corridor,” Professor Bartlett said. “As you know, the area’s expanding so rapidly, and the vision for FedUni here is to meet the needs of this growing community.” The move from Monash to FedUni would be seamless, according to the vice-chancellor, but would result in big changes for the better. Professor Bartlett, who has worked for both universities, said while Monash was “very focused on the school leaver and the high ATAR”, FedUni hoped to make local tertiary study accessible to all. “FedUni is very different. It’s looking much more at learning across the lifespan,” Professor Bartlett said. The hope is to appeal to the area’s large migrant population, as well as mature aged students looking to re or upskill.

need to do real work, to build team skills, need to do a lot more individual learning as opposed to just getting content regurgitated in the classroom,” Professor Bartlett said. “So I think that picture signalled to me something from the past and a transition and that’s another area of focus for FedUni - that blended learning. “We’re not quite there yet, but we’re moving towards a future possibility where students can select what they want to do, where they want to do it, any time and in any mode. “That is, I think, a very urgent gap for a university like ours to fill, trying to build capability. I think we’re still moving to that greater flexibility of offerings.” While the university is still finding its place within the Casey Cardinia community, Professor Bartlett said it would soon become a local leader. “FedUni has a lot of experience and talent in terms of community engagement - that’s a really great strength,” Professor Bartlett said. “It very much embeds itself in the communities it operates. And I think we can see already that there’s been quite a good response here to FedUni, and as it gets more established and engage more widely the community, I think you will see the activities here really become about supporting that community, helping it to grow. “So I think that in a nutshell is where I see FedUni, it’s the start of the journey but it’s a very exciting one, not just for FedUni but the local community.”

Barefoot guru bares soul By Narelle Coulter Singer, actor and radio presenter Clare Bowditch took a room full of businesswomen, and a handful of men, back to their childhoods at a women’s business lunch on Friday 4 August. The lunch, held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, was hosted by the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire. Bowditch, mother of three and founder of Big Hearted Business, spoke about her own journey from shy teenager to ARIA-winning songwriter. “We are in this room as apparent businesspeople from all different areas, all different walks of life but in actual fact, we’re here to build relationships," she said, animatedly walking around the stage in a long black dress and cream crochet cardigan. Settling into her presentation, Bowditch abandoned her flat black shoes in the middle of the stage, padding about in bare feet, her toenails a shade of pale pink. “The most useful thing that I can do for any of you - besides talk about my fabulous life - which is how it sounds on paper, I can tell you the reality is quite different - but the most helpful thing I can do is help you connect to each other." She cajoled the audience into connecting with each other by urging them to reveal their childhood dreams to someone they didn’t know, saying “in that childhood dream of who you wanted to be is a clue about what you’re good at". “What were you good at as a child? What came easily to you? Because in that kernel is the answer to your success as a businessperson and the answer to your success in your career and the answer to your desire to be happy for God’s sake. “Many of us are paralysed by the question ‘what is the meaning of my life, what is the purpose?’ It’s a big question to ask, I get it. I’ve been asking it since I was three, four and five years old.“ Ms Bowditch said she knew even as a child that she “wanted to do something that made a difference in the world“. To achieve that she set her sights on becoming Miss World 1979. Hospitals were the landscape of Bowditch’s childhood, as she and her family spent years comforting older sister Rowena who died of a rare condition aged seven. “I knew that I wanted to save her and I thought that if I became Miss World, I would have power and influence. I only worked that out in the last decade. For a long time I judged my childhood dream, I thought 'what a shallow bitch'. “But really, in that childhood dream was a desire to do more. I didn’t get to save my sister but I did get that gift that she left me which is, carry on, do the best that you can. You can be powerful in a small, tiny, little way - she was." Bowditch said she always had a burning desire to “do something that mattered". After finishing school, she stumbled along a path, which included a PR course and call centre work, until anger drove her to pursue her real love - singing/songwriting. “I thought, I’m angry, why aren’t there people like me out there making music? Why do you have to take your clothes off to be popular in a film clip? So whatever it is that’s burning in you, itching in you, what’s on fire in you, the thing that pisses you off the most is perhaps yet another clue in what your journey is supposed to be in this life. Charity angels start young By Victoria Stone-Meadows Narre Warren mother and charity entrepreneur Kelly Warren believes more children should be involved in charity work from young ages. Ms Warren was an outreach worker for a national charity until about six weeks ago when she decided to strike out on her own to help homeless and vulnerable people in Melbourne. She started the BK 2 Basics Melbourne charity that collects clothes, blankets, sleeping rolls, and personal hygiene items for Melbourne’s homeless and connects them other support services. Ms Warren’s daughters, Shanleigh, 17, Kaidi, 8, and Rhyan, 9, go along with her to collect donations, make care packs and help those in need. She said at first she wasn’t sure about the girls coming along with her to the city, but found her children had really found a love of helping others. “The girls wanted to come out with me while I was doing handouts, and I was quite hesitant in the beginning because I was new to running my own charity,” she said. “I didn’t know what to expect, but we never have any trouble, and if there was the slightest hint of trouble, I wouldn’t have the kids there.” The girls themselves say they really enjoy the time they spend with their mum helping others and improving the lives of vulnerable people. “We went down to Batman Park one night, and there was a man who only has a box under a tree,” eight-year-old Kaidi said. “He was sleeping on it, so we gave him a blanket and we gave him a sleeping roll and sleeping bag, and he smiled and he said, 'thanks'.” “We are making a difference.” They said that being involved in charity work had taught them to appreciate what they had and not to judge people. “We go to other people’s houses to collect things, or they bring them to us and we sort through them,” nine-year-old Rhyan said. “We are going out and helping; working for things for other people.” “I learned to appreciate that I have a roof over my head and a home, and that I am lucky that I have a family.”

Ms Warren said she was so proud of her children for their willingness to help others and said more children should be involved with charities to teach them about compassion and humility. “It should be part of school with any char-

ity like going to the RSPCA or working in rest homes and spending time with elderly,” she said. “More kids should be involved because it opens their eyes that it isn’t a perfect world and there are people that struggle.” “The girls are even concerned others at their school don’t have lunch and they will give their lunch away.”

By Russell Bennett With less than a second left and the Pakenham Big V men’s basketballers trailing by two points on hostile enemy soil at the Toyota Hothouse in Mildura, it took something truly special on Saturday night for the Warriors to advance from their knockout elimination final. Up stepped Gaze - Ben Gaze. With less than half a second left on the clock - 0.4 seconds to be exact - the Warriors captain drained the most clutch of three-pointers to stun the Mildura Heat in an absolutely jaw-dropping finish, 67-66. “Mildura at Mildura is a mission that teams often can’t come out victorious on, and going into the game we knew it was going to be tough,” said Warriors head coach Brent Russell. “Mildura is a side that’s always backed to win at home and, sure enough, the league tipped them to win.” But this was the little Warriors squad that could. Of the traveling party of 27, 14 were players and coaching staff. But while they were outnumbered, they’d never be beaten for heart or sheer passion. “The atmosphere was huge and we knew we had to stick together throughout the entire contest,” Russell said.

“Our game plan was simple - execute on both ends of the floor, and come out hot early to take the crowd out of it.” But the Heat got the upper hand early and had the parochial home crowd behind them. “Going into half-time down seven points we knew we just had to play 20 more minutes of Pakenham Warrior basketball,” Russell said. “We’d been in this situation before so it was up to us to fight to the end and keep our season alive.” The third term belonged to Pakenham, with Gaze coming out on fire against the heat with six straight points - forcing Mildura into a pair of timeouts. “We’d established a lead purely from team defensive efforts - holding them to nine points for that quarter - but we knew the game wasn’t over and that Mildura would come back with the support of the town in the stadium behind them,” Russell said. “The best part about this squad is that they stick together and believe in each other. “We had all guys contributing on both ends of the floor but nothing can go past ‘that shot’ from Gazey to hit that gamewinner.

“It just made that drive a happy one on the way home!” Gaze led the way for Pakenham with 24 points and, almost fittingly, the only one of the eight three point attempts he made was the one that counted most. Big man Josh Bjelan finished with a big double-double - 13 points and 15 boards - while James Topp (15 points) and Nick Ross (11 points) were the other doublefigure scorers. “These guys have fight, know what they want and believe in each other,” Russell said proudly. “We advance now to the next step against Craigieburn in a best of three series so all our focus is on them now. “As much as we would love to keep playing back that shot, we move on to our next assignment and, hopefully, we can advance further to somewhere the club has never been before.” Russell also praised the army of Warriors supporters on the weekend, adding: “A massive shout out to the support we got at Mildura and over social media. On his 15th birthday, he was told he was going to represent his country in Paris as the youngest Australian to ever take part in an open-age waterskiing world championship. He’ll jet off to Europe in just a matter of days to train before taking part in the 2017 Water Ski World Championships in Paris in September. Bailey was initially selected as one of two reserves for the team before getting the call-up, and now he’s set to compete in both the slalom and trick disciplines. He’ll be competing in Paris against world record holders more than twice his age. Some have been the best in the world for as long as he’s been alive. For Bailey, it’s all part of a reality that is still sinking in. He’s also in Australia’s preliminary squad for the junior world championships in Spain 2018, which will soon take up the bulk of his attention. Doves get act together By David Nagel Doveton has had its broken heart mended somewhat and gained a psychological advantage over its likely elimination final opponent with a 48-point victory over Beaconsfield at Robinson Oval. The Saturday night fixture promised plenty, providing the Doves with the opportunity to bounce back from consecutive single-digit losses to Berwick and Tooradin - against an Eagles’ side searching for their first legitimate scalp since round three. A desperate home side set up its win in the first half, with coach Aaron Davey kicking two crucial goals into the wind in the first term before the Doves put the pedal to the metal in the second quarter. Two goals to a lively Charlie O’Neill turned a seven-point deficit into a lead, before Nick Battle and Davey put the icing on the cake with some classy finishes. Battle’s trusty left foot had the radar dialled in from close to the boundary before Davey read the play magnificently, hitting the contest at full pace to soccer one through and give his side a handy advantage. The Doves banked a four-goal lead at half time and maintained a 14-point margin heading into a wind-assisted final term. A 5.4 to 0.0 finish rubber stamped a victory that was well celebrated after the recent spate of close defeats. Davey said his side had learnt plenty through the hard times. “What we learned is that good teams respond under pressure, and you can’t afford to drop off at any stage,” he said. “We played good footy for probably 108 minutes against Berwick, but it’s those lapses in concentration that cost us the chance to beat a really good football team. It was a painful loss, but I’m super proud of how the boys bounced back with a really good four-quarter performance against a quality team like Beacy.” Davey kicked three goals and praised the efforts of centre-half back Jake Blackwood and Will Smith, who kicked two, while the midfield dominance of Russ Gabriel, Sam Raru, and the dynamic Battle, held the home side in good stead throughout the course of the evening. Two on trot for resurgent Doves By David Nagel To back up one great performance with another is the sign of a very, very dangerous sporting team, and Doveton has earned that reputation after defeating Beaconsfield at Robinson Oval on Saturday night. The 57-50 Doves victory is impressive in its own right - but add to last week’s triumph over then topof-the-table Tooradin, and things start getting a lot more serious. Doves coach Liz Edwards believes a lethal combination of youth and experience is the main ingredient behind her side's late-season resurgence. “The girls are really motivated at the moment, and coming back from VNL and rep competitions means they’re growing as netballers,” Edwards said. “Chelsea (Imanisani), Hayley (Stewart) and Mel (Webster) are young ones playing great netball, and when we put experience beside them it really helps. It’s just a nice mix at the moment, but it’s important we don’t get ahead of ourselves and take it one week at a time.” Not surprisingly, Doveton started the better, carrying their form from last week’s win over the Seagulls, compared to an Eagles outfit coming off a lethargic performance against ROC. The Doves led 16-10 at the first break, with gun-goaler Rahni Samason (goal shooter) capitalising on the great work of midcourters Akanisi Seeto (wing defence), Linda Hunt (wing attack) and Stewart (centre). Imanisani (goal attack) was proving a great foil for Samason, while Vanessa San Jose (goal keeper) and Webster (goal defence) were making life difficult for the Eagles goalers. But Beacy, as good teams do, hit back hard in the second term.

The swap of Ash Gill (WA to C) and Rylee Nelson (C to WA) through the midcourt had an instant impact, with the Eagles scoring 17-13 in the second term and cutting the margin to just two at half-time. Doveton extended the lead narrowly in the third and took a three-goal advantage into the last quarter. Samason kept her nerve in the dying stages, shooting 13 last-quarter goals against quality defenders in Dani Cameron (GK) and Brit Tyers (GD), while Webster was superb in defence. Narre Warren made it 11 consecutive victories with a classy and convincing 72-31 victory over Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve. The Magpies dominated the first term, scoring 21-5, before driving home that advantage with an 18-4 second quarter. The Magpies stars were all in ripping nick, with Corrina Emery (GD) and Tracey Dell (GK) taking care of the defensive end of the court while Tayla Shannon (GA) and Gabby Dwyer (GS) were all class in attack. Lions defenders Keely Wright, Jenna Douglas and Amelia McCarthy did well against a torrent of quality supply. ROCs record reads two wins and a draw from its last five games after the Kangaroos won a low-scoring contest, 30-25, against Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. Defenders were right on top on Saturday, with Karli Foster (GD) and Brooke Kiely (GK) terrific for the Redbacks, while Laura Quinn (GD) and Mel Overdyk (GK) played their part for the Roos. The Redbacks led by a goal at half-time, but an 18-12 score-line in the second half lifted the Kangas to their fourth victory for the season. And Tooradin has bounced back to the winners list with a fast-starting 48-27 victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve.
