Horsepower push By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey’s Councillor Geoff Ablett has reignited a push for an equestrian centre to be built in the South-East. Cr Ablett put forward the motion at a general council meeting on Tuesday 1 August, where it was supported by other councillors. The motion will see Casey Council making contact with surrounding councils at Cardinia, Bass Coast, Baw Baw, Latrobe, Mornington Peninsula, South Gippsland, Western Port, and Yarra Ranges seeking support from them to establish an equestrian centre in the region. Cr Ablett said after the plan for establishing an equestrian centre at Tonimbuk in Cardinia fell through, he has not given up on funding a new place for a regional centre. “Someone jumped in three days before our offer and bought the land at Tonimbuk, it was the quarry people if I remember correctly,” he said. “As councils we can’t spend money on land we don’t own but that would have been ideal and Cardinia and Casey would be able to contribute to and profit from the centre.” Cr Ablett conceded land in Casey would be too expensive for this kind of project and that is why he wants to establish a joint project with other councils in the region. Cr Ablett says the South-East region is crying out for an equestrian centre and he is determined to make sure one is built to fit the community’s needs. “I am looking for something around the 150 to 200-acre mark that allows us to have cross country, indoor infrastructure, and caters for a huge crosssection of equestrian needs in the region,” he said. “Horses are a bigger industry than racing, equestrian is a 20 per cent silent giant of our economy and with the Werribee centre booked out all year

“But they are all scattered and spread out and we want to build something to complement that, not to replace it.” “We need something on this side of Melbourne that will allow people to come from all over Gippsland and not have to travel through Melbourne with their floats,” he said He said the amount of money that local governments, including Casey,
have spent on other sports in the last few years has been a particularly bitter point for women in the region. “About 70 per cent of people in equestrian are female and not building this centre has been a slap in the face for women,” he said. “They feel they are being looked over ... why not have something that tens of thousands of women are passionate about?”

“I am not giving up on this idea; we are serious about getting something in the South-East; it may cost a million to kick off but long-term we need something like this out here and now is the time to act,” he said. On the back of the motion, Casey Council will write to other councils in the area and a report will be compiled of their responses for presentation at Casey in three to four months’ time.

Masked men in servo robbery By Victoria Stone-Meadows

Police are seeking the assistance of the public to locate two men involved in an armed robbery of a service station in Lynbrook. Shortly before 2am on Sunday 25 June, two masked men entered the United Service Station store on the Dandenong Hastings Road, and approached the attendant. One of them is believed to be about 195 centimetres tall and was wearing a distinctive black hoodie with “def leopard” on the front in yellow, black pants and casual grey shoes. His face was completely covered by a white mask. The other, armed with a hammer, is described as about 185 centimetres tall, and was wearing a blue rain jacket with a white stripes on the front, black Adidas pants with three white strips down the side and black runners with white soles. His face was covered by a black mask. Migrants get hand of help Cranbourne’s Casey RACE aquatic centre has been helping improve the life of migrants in the community by partnering with the Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC). SMRC provides support to new migrant communities living in the Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia regions. A group of migrant seniors have been coming to Casey RACE with the help of SMRC to further develop their wellbeing and day-to-day living skills.
They participate in a range of physical activities at Casey RACE from using the hydrotherapy pool to the gym and everything in between. The 19 participants of the group are all over 65 years of age and include migrants from all over the world including Iraq, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Spain. Thelma Fiasco has been a member of the group for two years after she migrated to Australia from the Philippines. She said she had made many great
friends through the group and had found she didn’t feel her age. “The group has allowed me to meet friends, and exercising at Casey RACE has been great for my health, especially as I get older,” Ms Fiasco said. Another participant from Sri Lanka, Thambiah Suntharalingam, joined the group after having heart bypass surgery, and said it had allowed him to maintain good heart health. “I needed to improve my health and strength,” he said.
“Casey RACE has helped me do that; there is a lot of equipment which is easy to use and the instructors are helpful and friendly.” Program Worker for the group Merina Perera says the group has been very helpful to migrants to develop basic life skills and maintain their health. “Being a member of the group and coming to Casey RACE helps migrants socially interact with each other and the community, become healthier and increase their balance and strength,” she said.

Casey Stadium opens up By Victoria Stone-Meadows The first stage of the revamped Casey Stadium was officially opened by City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz on Sunday 6 August. The renovations to the formerly named Casey Indoor Leisure Centre have cost the City of Casey just under $18 million. City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz was joined by Terry Vickerman, State Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley MP and Anthony Neal from YMCA Victoria to officially open stage one of the redevelopment. The facility has had five new basketball and netball courts built, including a centre court for up to 1500 spectators, a cafe, piazza, and function space. However, the new stadium hasn’t been entirely without controversy. In June this year, Star News revealed that some sports such as beach volleyball and indoor soccer would not be offered at the new stadium. Former sports co-ordinator at the centre Adrian Vella, who ran the indoor AFL, soccer and beach volleyball for eight years, said it was made clear to him there was no room for these sports at the new centre. “They have re-purposed the use of all the areas we used in the centre,” he said. “When I rang they said the problem was they would have to re-do the lease and they didn’t want to do that, even short-term.” However, group manager of active communities at Casey Council James Rouse said the second part of the development would allow for different sports to be based there. “Part two is the indoor sports component, which is about to undergo a redevelopment,” he said. “That will see it re-purposed as a regional gymnastics, indoor cricket (capable of hosting state and national tournaments) and multi-sport venue with capacity for volleyball, badminton, wheelchair sports and more.”

Council will start stage two of the redevelopment at Casey Stadium straight away. “One of the key objectives of our new 2017-’21 Council Plan is to be the destination for arts, culture, sport and
leisure that attracts visitors and brings communities together, and our continued investment in Casey Stadium is a shining example of how we’re working to achieve that,” Cr Aziz said. The $4.73 million stage two of the project will be mainly funded by council with a $781,000 contribution from YMCA and a $650,000 contribution from the Victorian Government.

Man dies after plane crash in Clyde North paddock A light aircraft crash in Clyde North last week has left one man dead and one in a critical condition. The plane came down in paddocks near the corner of Pound and Hardys Roads in Clyde North at about 10.40am on Thursday 3 August. Emergency services were rushed to the scene, where it took crews just over an hour to free one of the men from the wreckage. Both men were flown by air ambulances to the Alfred and Royal Melbourne Hospitals in critical condition.
Victoria Police confirmed a 19-year-old Chinese national died in hospital as a result of his injuries on Sunday 6 August. A 25-year-old man from Newry, just outside of Maffra in the Gippsland area, remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. It is still unclear what caused the plane to fall from the sky and crashland, but police and Recreation Aviation Australia say their investigation is ongoing. Recreation Aviation Australia will also prepare a report for the Coroner.

Soccer’s shame By Cam Lucadou-Wells Parents of Casey Comets players are threatening to quit the club after a junior soccer coach was stood down and suspended in the aftermath of an ugly incident at an under-10s match. Mike Somerville, the ex-coach of the Comets Hyenas side, was suspended for four weeks for misconduct by a Football Federation Victoria closed tribunal on 2 August. He was accused of inciting his players to misconduct by taking them to a kickboxing gym session at Sting gym days before the spiteful, abandoned match on 18 June. It is understood that both the Comets and the opposing side Peninsula Strikers had sought a life ban for Mr Somerville. The Comets had already dismissed Somerville as coach days after the incident. In a video of the kickboxing session, the instructor taught players how to employ “dirty tactics” out of the referee’s gaze. “Apparently, you’re playing a dirty side this week,” he said as he swung an elbow at a punching bag held to his side by Somerville. “The ref has to be away from your vision,” he told the players. At the subsequent game, a Comets player felled a Peninsula Strikers opponent with a tackle, and then spun and kicked the player in the back. Strikers coach Troy Hicks allegedly ran in from the sidelines and loudly remonstrated with the eight-year-old Comets player at close quarters. The father of the Comets player then entered the fray, pushing Mr Hicks away from his son. Up to a dozen adult spectators entered the pitch, and the game was abandoned at the 15-minute mark.
In his submission on the incident, Mr Somerville described Mr Hicks’ approach to the player as “unprofessional”, “disgraceful” and “hurl(ing) abuse and anger”. Mr Hicks submitted to the tribunal that he ran out on the pitch to protect his fallen player from further attack. “What are you doing? Stop it,” he allegedly told the Comets player. “I really think that if I hadn’t got in-between (the two boys) that the boy would’ve kicked (the Strikers player) again in the back or back of his head.” Mr Somerville, who had pleaded not guilty, is believed to have argued at the tribunal that he clarified the instructor’s advice later at the kickboxing session. He allegedly told his players that they ought to stick to playing football on the field. The tribunal is believed to have found Mr Somerville ought to have stepped in and objected to the instructor’s advice to the children earlier. Mr Somerville had denied to Star News in July that the “bonding” session for parents and children was “training my boys to be violent”. “To blame the kickboxing is just ridiculous. I’ve never had issues with the other boys. “The kickboxing lesson had zero to do with how the player behaved. He knows what he did was extremely wrong, but he doesn’t know why he did it.” Bashar Abuusba, the father of one of Mr Somerville’s players, said up to eight of the side’s 12 families would leave the Comets at the end of the season as a result of losing “trust” in the club. They were upset that the Comets had sacked Mr Somerville, but failed to lodge a complaint against Mr Hicks’ “violent action against children”. “Does that give me the right to run out on the field and abuse a player?
“For us, it’s about the incident on the field. That’s why it has made all of us angry.” Mr Abuusba said the kickboxing session and its social-media publication was a “mistake” that should be learned from. But there was no prepared attack on Strikers players, he said. He accused the Comets administration of seeking to protect itself from sanctions rather than support its coach. In a joint statement from the Comets and the Strikers, Casey denied of having prior knowledge of the kickboxing session. “Neither Casey Comets nor Peninsula Strikers JFC were charged with any offence. “Both clubs are satisfied that the tribunal has now assessed and resolved this issue. “Both clubs are working with the children affected, and will support/work with all local clubs and members to ensure ... a safe and enjoyable environment.” Football Federation Victoria had barred Star News from attending the hearing, and has not responded to many calls, texts and email inquiries from Star on the matter. It did not comment on the tribunal’s findings, nor did it make comment on the outcome. It also did not comment on its investigation of Mr Hicks, who did not return calls from Star News. FFV has a child safety policy, declaring a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse and that all children have a right to feel safe. According to the code of conduct, speaking to a minor in an “overly harsh, threatening, intimidating, shaming, derogatory, demeaning or humiliating” way is prohibited. An upcoming under-10s game between the Comets and the Strikers has meanwhile been cancelled.

Award for literacy programs Casey Cardinia Libraries has been awarded a best practice award for their delivery of literacy programs for early years. The judgement for the READ Accreditation encompasses all libraries in the state and CCL CEO Chris Buckingham said they took early years education very seriously. “Encouraging early literacy and lifelong learning are top priorities for us; reading is so important for everyone’s health and wellbeing,” he said. “We provide stimulating programs and events, lend books and create spaces where people can enjoy reading for free.”
CCL has specifically focused on delivering free and regular reading activities, and over the last financial year attracted more than 5129 children and their carers to Baby Rhyme Time. Tinies’ Time, a rhyme and book sharing session for toddlers up to three years old, welcomed 18,069 children and their carers and preschool Storytime at the library which hosted 12, 859 children and their carers. “We love seeing parents and children together in the library ... they bring energy and vitality. An award-winning Casey-based filmmaking crew is hoping to open more opportunities for people interested in film in the South East. Dhoom Films took home two awards at the 2017 Nice International Filmmaker Festival for their original production titled, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The film focuses on the lives of six young LGBTIQ people and their stories in coming out and finding acceptance with their peers. The film’s producer and one of the drivers behind Dhoom Films Saahil Luthra said it was an honour to travel to Europe for the award ceremony. “We got there, and we were selected for screenings and received for nominations for best supporting actress, best director, best film and best editing,” he said. “We ended up winning awards for Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for Laura Rigon.” Mr Luthra said the crew couldn’t believe it when they were announced as winners. “We were just blank at first, and it took a minute to sink in that we won; I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I told our director Rhiannon Williams she was the reason we won, and she deserved it, but she was speechless.” Dhoom Films has been making films in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs for about eight years with

Casey Hospital will benefit from a statewide funding boost for Victorian hospitals, says Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley. Monash Health, which manages Casey and Dandenong hospitals and Monash Medical Centre, will receive $1.324 billion in 2017-'18 - up more than $79 million. It is a 20.5 per cent boost on its allocation in the last Liberal budget in 2014, the State Government claims. Under the statewide boost, hospitals will receive an extra $1.67 billion in the State Budget in the next four years. Ms Graley said the boost would ensure local residents had access to the highest quality care close to home. “We know that our hard-working and dedicated doctors and nurses do a remarkable job at Casey Hospital and this record funding boost will ensure they can continue to save lives and keep people healthy.”

Casey youth crime drop By Victoria Stone-Meadows Youth crime is down in the City of Casey, along with the rest of the state, latest figures from the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) show. There were 231 first-time offenders between the ages of 10 and 17 in the City of Casey during the 2016 calendar year, compared to 343 in the 2012 calendar year. The statistics show that year on year there are has been a decrease in the number of young first-time offenders in the City of Casey. There were 21 fewer young offenders in 2013 compared to 2012, 82 fewer in 2014 compared to 2013 and one fewer in 2015 compared to 2014. The trend in Casey follows a wider trend in Victoria that has seen a 10 percent decrease in youth crime in the last decade. The research found that 56
per cent of young offenders committed at least one offence with another person in 2016, down from 63 per cent in 2007. Crime Statistics Agency Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said young people were more likely to commit a crime when in the presence of someone else as opposed to acting alone. ‘More than half (56 per cent) of all young offenders committed at least one crime in the company of others, compared to 30 per cent of offenders aged 18 to 24,” she said. "Our research shows that the crime type most likely to be committed in company is robbery. "Young people were less likely to commit serious assaults and motor vehicle thefts in company, and co-offending for these crimes have both decreased compared to 2007.”
Specific types of crimes committed by young people have also shown downward trends. The CSA statistics show that the number of first-time young offenders committing crimes against the person remained stable over time but property and deception offences decreased by an average of nearly nine per cent per year. Ms Dowsley said the decrease in property offices is driven by less shoplifting among young people. “The decrease in recorded property offences committed by young people was driven by a drop in retail theft offences,” she said. “We’ve also seen a reduction in the number of young people committing serious assaults in the last five years, and this reflects the broader trends highlighted in our quarterly crime statistics.”

Walk in the park helps out By Victoria Stone-Meadows A Lynbrook man along with a team of friends and family will be taking a walk in the park later this month to raise money and support people in the community living with Parkinson’s disease. John McKenzie was diagnosed with Parkinson’s eight and half years ago and said he didn’t know much about the illness when he was diagnosed. Mr McKenzie and his wife Maria started their own peer support group for sufferers and their carers and Mr McKenzie said it was one of the best things he ever did. He said getting to know other people who shared common experiences with the illness had helped him deal with his own symptoms. “Most people are as ignorant about Parkinson’s as I was,” he said. “People think of Parkinson’s as old people that shake and while that’s the truth, it’s actually an incredibly complex condition that is intuitive as it progresses.” “I think having information about the condition, what you can do, tips and tricks, advice, and sharing experiences is all quite comforting.” Mr McKenzie will be participating in Parkinson’s Victoria’s annual fundraising event ‘A Walk in the Park’ for
the first time this year at Federation Square on Sunday 27 August. “I haven’t done it before but because I run this peer support group for Parkinson’s Victoria, I thought it was about time I practised what I preached,” he said. “So I tried to get a few people interested and I decided to get a few friends and family together to get us registered.” A Walk in the Park is Australia’s largest community event dedicated to improving the lives of people living with Parkinson’s and brings together those living with Parkinson’s, families, carers, health professionals, friends and supporters to create positive change. It was through running the peer support group and being involved with Parkinson’s Victoria that Mr McKenzie found out about deep brain stimulation. Mr McKenzie will undergo this invasive surgery on Wednesday 9 August, where doctors will implant a medical device called a neurostimulator to send impulses through implanted electrodes specific targets in the brain. He said he would never have considered the surgery as a way of dealing with his symptoms if it weren’t for his involvement with Parkinson’s Victoria. “I went to a seminar they run, a kind of get together for people with deep

Mr McKenzie said there was so much to be gained from sharing experiences with Parkinson’s and encouraged anyone who needs the support to get in touch. “The first thing that struck me when I went to a support group in Frankston was it was such a relief to talk to people who could finish your sentence for you,” he said.

Uni will act By Victoria Stone-Meadows The only university in the City of Casey has responded to findings by the Australian Human Rights Commission that 39 per cent of surveyed FedUni students reported sexual harassment in 2016. The Change the course: National report on sexual assault and sexual harassment at Australian universities report released on Tuesday 1 August showed that more than half of university students across the country experienced some kind of sexual assault in the 2016 calendar year. Federation University will be the sole university in Casey when they complete the changeover of the current Monash University Berwick campus at the end of 2017. The results of the nationwide survey showed that 14 per cent of students at Federation University experienced sexual assault on campus in 2016, compared to 28 per cent at Monash University. The Vice-Chancellor of Federation University, Professor Helen Bartlett, said Federation University would be taking the report’s 10 recommendations very seriously to address the issue of sexual assault on campus. “We have a responsibility to raise awareness and educate students about what sexual harassment is, that it’s not right, and that one case is one case too many,” she said. “I think Fed Uni’s a safe place, but we want to make it safer and that means in regards to sexual harassment we have to be really clear that we have zero tolerance for it.” As well as committing to implement all 10 of the report’s recommendations, Federation University will extend its training programs across its entire institution to prevent sexual and violence-related acts. The results of the survey show that a majority of students at Federation University had at least some knowledge of how to seek support or assistance from the university in regards to sexual harassment. However, 33 per cent of students were shown to have none or only very little knowledge of how to seek help or support from Federation University. Professor Bartlett said this knowledge gap in how to seek support would be addressed as an integral part of ending sexual assault at universities.

Picture: CONTRIBUTED “We’ve been looking into our procedures about this,” she said. “We want to ensure we have robust procedures that ensure first responders are trained, that our student leaders are fully briefed about how to support their peers and that every student that comes to this university has the opportunity to go through training, awareness raising and not just once but during the life of the student. “These things need to be reinforced, it’s just not a token gesture, and these things need to be embedded so it becomes part and parcel of students’ education.” The 10 recommendations from the Human Rights Commission report that Federation University will implement are: - Federation University will adopt an evidence-based respectful relationships program for university students; - Federation University will participate in specialist training developed by the Australian Psychological Society to extend the skills of university counsellors to support victims and survivors of sexual assault and sexual harassment; - Federation University will connect students with a 24/7 national interim support line offering specialist support for students, operated by Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia, to supplement university services in the months immediately following the release of the report; - Federation University will engage in a broader availability of first responder training for university staff; - Federation University will
engage in new training for university staff and leaders about prevention and responses to sexual harassment and sexual assault; - Federation University will work with Universities Colleges Australia - a peak body for residential colleges - to provide access to first responder training for residential colleges and halls of residence, and to take their own action to support students in a compassionate and timely way; - Federation University will adopt best practice guidelines developed by the Human Rights Commission to support universities to respond to reports of sexual assault and sexual harassment; - Federation University will adopt new principles on postgraduate student-staff interaction; - Federation University will commit to continue the Respect. Barefoot guru bares soul By Narelle Coulter Singer, actor and radio presenter Clare Bowditch took a room full of businesswomen, and a handful of men, back to their childhoods at a women’s business lunch on Friday 4 August. The lunch, held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, was hosted by the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire. Bowditch, mother of three and founder of Big Hearted Business, spoke about her own journey from shy teenager to ARIA-winning songwriter. “We are in this room as apparent businesspeople from all different areas, all different walks of life but in actual fact, we’re here to build relationships," she said, animatedly walking around the stage in a long black dress and cream crochet cardigan. Settling into her presentation, Bowditch abandoned her flat black shoes in the middle of the stage, padding about in bare feet, her toenails a shade of pale pink. “The most useful thing that I can do for any of you - besides talk about my fabulous life - which is how it sounds on paper, I can tell you the reality is quite different - but the most helpful thing I can do is help you connect to each other." She cajoled the audience into connecting with each other by urging them to reveal their childhood dreams to someone they didn’t know, saying “in that childhood dream of who you wanted to be is a clue about what you’re good at". “What were you good at as a child? What came easily to you? Because in that kernel is the answer to your success as a businessperson and the answer to your success in your career and the answer to your desire to be happy for God’s sake. “Many of us are paralysed by the question ‘what is the meaning of my life, what is the purpose?’ It’s a big question to ask, I get it. I’ve been asking it since I was three, four and five years old.“ Ms Bowditch said she knew even as a child that she “wanted to do something that made a difference in the world“. To achieve that she set her sights on becoming Miss World 1979. Hospitals were the landscape of Bowditch’s childhood, as she and her family spent years comforting older sister Rowena who died of a rare condition aged seven. “I knew that I wanted to save her and I thought that if I became Miss World, I would have power and influence. I only worked that out in the last decade. For a long time I judged my childhood dream, I thought 'what a shallow bitch'. “But really, in that childhood dream was a desire to do more. I didn’t get to save my sister but I did get that gift that she left me which is, carry on, do the best that you can. You can be powerful in a small, tiny, little way - she was." Bowditch said she always had a burning desire to “do something that mattered". After finishing school, she stumbled along a path, which included a PR course and call centre work, until anger drove her to pursue her real love - singing/songwriting. “I thought, I’m angry, why aren’t there people like me out there making music? Why do you have to take your clothes off to be popular in a film clip? So whatever it is that’s burning in you, itching in you, what’s on fire in you, the thing that pisses you off the most is perhaps yet another clue in what your journey is supposed to be in this life. Cranbourne-based education charity the ACE Foundation and Cranbourne Toyota have given students from three schools in the area a once in a lifetime AFL experience. On Friday 28 July, 24 students and three teachers from Hampton Park Secondary College, Cranbourne Secondary College and Cranbourne East Secondary College were whisked off to the MCG for what they thought was a day at the footy. However, on the journey to the stadium the students were given gift bags containing drink bottles, pens, mini footballs, Planet Ark T-shirts, and signed Marcus Stoinis posters. The surprises didn’t end there through, with the students and teachers being greeted at the MCG by Collingwood premiership player Ben Reid. From there the guests were taken on a tour of the Collingwood facilities by Mr Reid, which included time for selfies and a bit of kick to kick. The guests were then walked into the grounds of MCG to make their way to their seats to watch the Hawks take on the Swans. Students and teachers also had an opportunity to tour the underground and rarely seen areas of the stadium. A lucky and knowledgeable student from Cranbourne East Secondary won six medallion club tickets and two parking passes to the Collingwood and Melbourne game by answering questions correctly, in a quiz given by Mr Reid.

Council’s plans go digital The City of Casey’s 2017 to 2021 Council Plan has been presented in a digital format for the first time. The Council Plan details how the City of Casey will work towards key projects to improve the liveability of the municipality.
The council is aiming to promote ongoing feedback on the plan with its new digital platform. City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the plan has been informed through council run community engagement projects such as the Casey Next Survey
and the Casey People’s Panel. “Our Council Plan for the next four years is driven by the expectations and the needs of our residents,” he said. “The 54 Casey People’s Panel members helped identify these priorities, and will be part of the delivery of
a number of key objectives to put the City of Casey ahead of the rest.” “As the biggest and one of the fastest growing municipalities in the state, we want to ensure that we are continually catering to the needs of our rapidly expanding community,” he said.

Charity angels start young By Victoria Stone-Meadows Narre Warren mother and charity entrepreneur Kelly Warren believes more children should be involved in charity work from young ages. Ms Warren was an outreach worker for a national charity until about six weeks ago when she decided to strike out on her own to help homeless and vulnerable people in Melbourne. She started the BK 2 Basics Melbourne charity that collects clothes, blankets, sleeping rolls, and personal hygiene items for Melbourne’s homeless and connects them other support services. Ms Warren’s daughters, Shanleigh, 17, Kaidi, 8, and Rhyan, 9, go along with her to collect donations, make care packs and help those in need. She said at first she wasn’t sure about the girls coming along with her to the city, but found her children had really found a love of helping others. “The girls wanted to come out with me while I was doing handouts, and I was quite hesitant in the beginning because I was new to running my own charity,” she said. “I didn’t know what to expect, but we never have any trouble, and if there was the slightest hint of trouble, I wouldn’t have the kids there.” The girls themselves say they really enjoy the time they spend with their mum helping others and improving the lives of vulnerable people. “We went down to Batman Park one night, and there was a man who only has a box under a tree,” eight-year-old Kaidi said. “He was sleeping on it, so we gave him a blanket and we gave him a sleeping roll and sleeping bag, and he smiled and he said, 'thanks'.” “We are making a difference.” They said that being involved in charity work had taught them to appreciate what they had and not to judge people. “We go to other people’s houses to collect things, or they bring them to us and we sort through them,” nine-year-old Rhyan said. “We are going out and helping; working for things for other people.” “I learned to appreciate that I have a roof over my head and a home, and that I am lucky that I have a family.”

Ms Warren said she was so proud of her children for their willingness to help others and said more children should be involved with charities to teach them about compassion and humility. “It should be part of school with any char-
ity like going to the RSPCA or working in rest homes and spending time with elderly,” she said. “More kids should be involved because it opens their eyes that it isn’t a perfect world and there are people that struggle.” “The girls are even concerned others at their school don’t have lunch and they will give their lunch away.”
Ms Warren is hopeful she will be able to expand the scope of BK 2 Basics and include getting lunches at local schools and helping the homeless or vulnerable people in the City of Casey as well. Eagles host big day By David Nagel Beaconsfield’s sparkling facility at Holm Park Reserve will book-end the 2017 South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) finals series after winning hosting rights for this year’s grand final. The Eagles’ home ground will kick things off on Saturday 26 August, hosting the qualifying final, before Berwick and Pakenham take control of further preliminaries before the action returns to Holm Park for the biggest dance of all on Saturday 16 September. Berwick will be the home of Sunday sport, hosting the elimination and first semi-finals on 27 August and 3 September respectively, with Pakenham’s Toomuc Reserve the home of the second semi-final on Saturday 2 September before backing up with the preliminary final on 9 September. Beaconsfield Football Club president Troy Robinson said the club was excited to be hosting the biggest event on the SEFNL calendar. “We pride ourselves on the great facilities we have here at Beaconsfield, and it’s a massive opportunity for us to showcase those facilities on the biggest stage,” Robinson said. “We’re focused on this becoming a great event with a heavy community involvement and we want community groups from around the area to share in the benefits. The Upper Beaconsfield CFA is already on board, and there are plenty of options we need to discuss as we work through our planning phase.” Beaconsfield, Berwick and Pakenham were the only clubs to tender to host finals; a process shortened after
the league’s governing body - AFL South East - reversed its original decision to host the grand final under lights at Casey Fields. Pressure from the nine SEFNL clubs- who were unanimous in their support of a day grand final- forced AFLSE to change its mind. Robinson said the football and netball clubs were hoping to bring the community together for the day. “We want to bring a carnival atmosphere to the day, because it’s not just a celebration for Beaconsfield, it’s a celebration for the community and for SEFNL as a whole,” he said. “We’d love all nine clubs to be involved in some capacity and bring a great family atmosphere to the day. We only have a small window to get ready now, but we intend to bring a point of difference with the sole focus on attracting as many people as possible to what should be a great event.” Officer has hosted the last two SEFNL grand finals - and its expertise has been called upon. “Barry (Officer president Barry O’Loughlin) has been great with his advice, just advising us of the little bits and pieces that made their experience so rewarding,” Robinson said. “Barry has been brilliant with his support, even to the point of offering us equipment to borrow on the day.” The main issue regarding Beaconsfield as a suitable host for the grand final centred on its ability to segregate vehicles and pedestrians on a busy stretch of Beaconsfield-Emerald Road. Robinson said the club was taking traffic management responsibilities

We’ve hosted two VFL games this year, so our experience is building, but we expect this crowd to exceed anything we’ve seen before ... the key driver being the weather.”
SEFNL Leagues manager Liz Triffitt said the league was confident that Beaconsfield would do an outstanding job. “Firstly, I’d like to thank all three clubs for taking part in the tender process and for offering up three outstanding venues to host this year’s finals series,” Triffitt said. “The Holm Park Reserve facility is a great venue, and we’re confident Beaconsfield will showcase the league in the best possible way.” Triffitt also confirmed that the league will produce a hard-copy footy
record for the duration of the finals series. Dees home against the odds By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 16 A gutsy second half fightback from an injury-ravaged Casey has seen the Demons register a sensational 10-point victory over fellow finals aspirant Sandringham on Saturday afternoon. In one of the more important games on the VFL calendar, Casey defied the odds to cement its place inside the top eight with just three matches remaining. With a hurling breeze dictating terms, the game was a genuine armwrestle with plenty on the line for both sides. Bailey Fritsch got the ball rolling with a clever snap in the opening minutes, before hard nut Jimmy Munro kicked a great goal on the run only moments later to hand the Dees a dream start with the wind. Although Angus Scott kicked another before quarter time, the Zebras clicked into gear and levelled the game up through strong defence. But the first injury of many for the day in the first quarter severely halted Casey’s momentum - in a fairly innocuous incident in a marking contest, young defender Joel Smith landed awkwardly to suffer a crack in his tibia
that will rule him out for the rest of the season. In that very same contest, Munro dislocated his shoulder, leaving the Demons down two players with still three quarters of football left to play. With the Zebras dominating proceedings and facing a hefty 28-point half time deficit off the back of a seven-goal quarter with the wind, the Demons then had to face the second half without dominant ruckman Jake Spencer, who succumbed to a serious rib injury. And with virtually no one left on the bench, pure grit saw the Demons roar back to life, kicking six-goals to two with the wind in the third to cut the margin to a solitary point. But with the wind against them and the players fatiguing against a side fully fit and with the clear edge in the final quarter, the Demons had other ideas. Led by the brilliance of midfielders Jay Kennedy-Harris, Ben Kennedy and Angus Brayshaw, the Demons snatched the lead early in the final quarter through a snap goal from Angus Scott, before moments later Bailey Fritsch extended the lead out to 11 points. “We’re dealing with every week as it comes at the moment,” Plapp said. “We’ve got a really good bunch of characters that are here for the right reasons. “It was a really good reward for them today, but bigger and better things for them now to keep striving for.” The Demons will host Northern Blues on Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields.

Gone ... in 2.9 seconds By Nick Creely For all that the Casey Cavaliers achieved in their inaugural season in the State Championship Men competition, seeing the season end in just 2.9 seconds is one bitter pill to swallow. That’s exactly what happened to the brave Cavs, who endured a devastating 74-73 loss in Saturday night’s elimination final against the Eltham Wildcats. With scores tied at 73 apiece and with only seconds to go, Chris Cameron (20 points) stood at the free throw line ready to end the game. He missed the first, but duly converted the second basket to secure a famous victory and break the hearts of a Cavs side that fought back admirably. But it was a see-sawing contest with plenty of momentum shifts. The Wildcats at one point surged out to an almost impenetrable 15-point lead midway through the third term and it looked like the game was falling right into their laps. But a stunning fightback from the Cavs saw the visitors silence the capacity crowd and reduce the margin to just two points heading into the final quarter. And only a few points separated them until the very last moments as the Cavs tied the scoreboard and almost pulled off the most remarkable victory of 2017. A strong all-round effort by Brent Hobba (17 points, 13 rebounds) and another consistent performance by Brandon Polk (15 points, eight rounds) weren’t quite enough to get the Cavs over the line. In the other division, Casey’s Youth League Two Men side defeated Collingwood 72-78 on Saturday in the first of the three playoffs for the championship. The Youth League Two Women also had a 7168 point win over Blackburn on Sunday in the first of three semi-finals played at Casey Stadium. Game two will be played at Casey Stadium this Saturday night, with the Cavs looking to seal the championship. They meet again this Saturday at Knox Basketball Stadium, with the Cavs a massive chance of booking themselves a grand final spot.
In an interesting turn of events in the Dandenong District Cricket Association, all turf wicket tables are set to be replaced in February and March 2018. The DDCA has advised all clubs - except clubs in the Casey and Kingston areas - that the City of Greater Dandenong no longer has Portland Soil available for the turf wickets. This means that all wickets with this soil will be replaced by Black Wicket Soil from Hume Turf. There is set to be an interruption to cricket for the following DDCA turf grounds: February - Coomoora Reserve (Coomoora) and Wachter
Reserve (Parkmore Pirates) will have no cricket played for the last three rounds and finals. March - Alex Nelson Reserve (Springvale South), Parkfield Reserve (Parkfield), Rowley Allen Reserve (Keysborough) and Springvale Reserve (Springvale) will be unavailable for the 2017-'18 finals. The Gazette contacted a few clubs in the association in regards to their potential impact on the season but they declined to comment. All DDCA clubs outside the Greater Dandenong area, for example Berwick in the Casey region and Dingley in the Kingston City, will need to replace their turf wickets if they are using the Portland Soil.
In other news around the DDCA, new Turf 1 club St Mary’s have added a star recruit to its ranks, with Sri-Lankan first-class cricketer Kaushalya Gajasinghe signing on as a playing-coach for 2017-'18. He will replace last year’s premiership winning captain-coach Jake Needham, who will not be returning to the club after securing employment in the UK. Gajasinghe, 25, has played 46 first-class matches as well as representing Sri Lanka at Under-19 level and adds instant star power to the side. Another DDCA Turf 1 club, Cranbourne, is on the verge of announcing their new captain for the 2017-'18 season, after the loss of Steven Spoljaric to Springvale South.

By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - WOMENS REVIEW - ROUND 11 Starved of a win for over a month, Cranbourne finally found its mojo on Saturday with a terrific team performance against the winless Seaford at Frankston Oval. The signs weren’t positive early for the Eagles, with Seaford slamming on two early goals before stopping the home side in their tracks despite kicking against the wind. What came next was a brilliant defensive effort, with the Eagles holding Seaford goalless for the remainder of the game while piling on six themselves to run out comfortable 33-point winners. Eagles coach Sein Clearihan was delighted with the club’s first win since the middle of June, and said it was one of those games where everything just went to plan. “They played exactly to the tee on Saturday - they (Seaford) kicked the first two goals then Bridie Kennedy kicked a goal against the wind up the top end and that was worth at least three goals - it kick-started us,” he said. “They ran all day and in numbers, and they hunted Seaford, it was just really, really good to see. “As coach, they put four quarters together and they structured up which was great for me - when Seaford pressured us, we stuck to our struc-

With three rounds to go and no chance to play finals in 2017, Cranbourne will play three of the top-four sides in the competition to round out their season. But Clearihan is issuing a challenge to his players to relish what he concedes will be a testing last handful of games. “We’re setting them up and giving them a chance to prove themselves to the coaches - the next three weeks will be really hard with Melbourne Uni, Diamond Creek and St Kilda, but
we have to make the most of the next three weeks,” he said. The Eagles’ match against Melbourne Uni will be played on Sunday at the University Main Oval at 2pm.

Doves get act together By David Nagel Doveton has had its broken heart mended somewhat and gained a psychological advantage over its likely elimination final opponent with a 48-point victory over Beaconsfield at Robinson Oval. The Saturday night fixture promised plenty, providing the Doves with the opportunity to bounce back from consecutive single-digit losses to Berwick and Tooradin - against an Eagles’ side searching for their first legitimate scalp since round three. A desperate home side set up its win in the first half, with coach Aaron Davey kicking two crucial goals into the wind in the first term before the Doves put the pedal to the metal in the second quarter. Two goals to a lively Charlie O’Neill turned a seven-point deficit into a lead, before Nick Battle and Davey put the icing on the cake with some classy finishes. Battle’s trusty left foot had the radar dialled in from close to the boundary before Davey read the play magnificently, hitting the contest at full pace to soccer one through and give his side a handy advantage. The Doves banked a four-goal lead at half time and maintained a 14-point margin heading into a wind-assisted final term. Two on trot for resurgent Doves By David Nagel To back up one great performance with another is the sign of a very, very dangerous sporting team, and Doveton has earned that reputation after defeating Beaconsfield at Robinson Oval on Saturday night. The 57-50 Doves victory is impressive in its own right - but add to last week’s triumph over then topof-the-table Tooradin, and things start getting a lot more serious. Doves coach Liz Edwards believes a lethal combination of youth and experience is the main ingredient behind her side's late-season resurgence. “The girls are really motivated at the moment, and coming back from VNL and rep competitions means they’re growing as netballers,” Edwards said. “Chelsea (Imanisani), Hayley (Stewart) and Mel (Webster) are young ones playing great netball, and when we put experience beside them it really helps. It’s just a nice mix at the moment, but it’s important we don’t get ahead of ourselves and take it one week at a time.” Not surprisingly, Doveton started the better, carrying their form from last week’s win over the Seagulls, compared to an Eagles outfit coming off a lethargic performance against ROC. The Doves led 16-10 at the first break, with gun-goaler Rahni Samason (goal shooter) capitalising on the great work of midcourters Akanisi Seeto (wing defence), Linda Hunt (wing attack) and Stewart (centre). Imanisani (goal attack) was proving a great foil for Samason, while Vanessa San Jose (goal keeper) and Webster (goal defence) were making life difficult for the Eagles goalers. But Beacy, as good teams do, hit back hard in the second term.

ROCs record reads two wins and a draw from its last five games after the Kangaroos won a low-scoring contest, 30-25, against Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. Defenders were right on top on Saturday, with Karli Foster (GD) and Brooke Kiely (GK) terrific for the Redbacks, while Laura Quinn (GD) and Mel Overdyk (GK) played their part for the Roos. The Redbacks led by a goal at half-time, but an 18-12 score-line in the second half lifted the Kangas to their fourth victory for the season. Back in the fold By Nick Creely The Frankston Football Club will return to the VFL in 2018 after having its licence application granted by AFL Victoria last week. The club presented a strong case for a return to the VFL to AFL Victoria Board and Executive representatives on 24 July, with a focus on re-establishing its important role in developing the talent pathway in the south-east region, but also on a long-term management and finan-
cial plan for the club. “AFL Victoria was always committed to continuing to work with key stakeholders in the region - including Frankston FC - to ensure there would be a state-league presence there into the future,” AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper said in a media release. “The Frankston FC and all involved have shown their commitment to regain their licence in the VFL, establishing a strong strategic plan focused on governance,
community engagement, sponsorship and membership that will assist the club and the region into the future.” The Stingrays - who have been involved in a long and fruitful partnership with Frankston - are set to be the main TAC Cup club to benefit from the reinstatement of the Dolphins’ VFL licence. Stingrays coach Craig Black is thrilled to have Frankston back in the VFL competition.
“One thing it does do is give our TAC Cup kids an option - a lot of our boys go to Casey, and now there’s another opportunity for the kids who live down south,” he said. “It’s exciting for our area and for our young men to get an opportunity if they don’t get drafted to go back and ply their trade for a couple of years. “It’s just a good result for everyone.”

Beaconsfield’s St Francis Xavier Saints FIDA football team is moving ahead in leaps and bounds, as evidenced by the levels some of its incredible playing talent is reaching. The Victorian FIDA (Football Integration Development Association) Football League exists to provide Victorians with an intellectual disability the opportunity to participate in Aussie Rules at a competitive level. The Saints are this year playing in the Division 4 competition and are focusing firmly on skill development and participation, and each of their players love their involvement with the club. One such player is Shaun Doll, who is new to the club this season. The Saints recently nominated him to try out for the AFL Vic Metro FIDA team earlier this year and not only did he make it through the selection process, he recently took part in the National Inclusion Carnival in Queensland in what was a fantastic personal achievement and one the Saints were supremely proud of. Vic Metro claimed its third straight Inclusion Carnival title after defeating AFL NSW/ACT in the grand final by 53 points on the Gold Coast, 9.7 (61) to 1.2 (8). Metro piled on seven goals in the second half to race away with another title.
