The 4 July ceremony, coinciding with Naidoc Week, was the start of the centre’s dedication to recognising and celebrating Aboriginal and Indigenous cultures. “We’re looking forward to imbedding Aboriginal and other cultures into our daily practices,” Ms Rowland said. “We really want the centre to be an inclusive place for everyone.” The centre is investigating the possibility of a monthly smoking ceremony, and Ms Rowland said parents of the childcare were supportive of its plans to explore other cultural practices. $30,000 from boss A 45-year-old Pakenham woman has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $30,000 while working at an Officer supermarket. Michelle Walker, a store services officer at the Woolworths supermarket, had allegedly told police she stole to cover utility bills as well as toll and Sheriff fines, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 10 July.

She had allegedly told police she’d smuggle out cash in a handbag or a sock, and later manipulate records to cover the loss. The issue was uncovered after Walker took a call at work that her mother died in the early hours of 27 February. She allegedly continued working for 54 minutes, refloating the checkout registers with cash before telling her manager that she had to leave

due to her mother’s death. As other staff completed the floats, they noticed $30,940 cash missing from six registers. Walker’s work on the register floats had been unchecked since March 2016, police told the court. In that time, she had access to cash from the registers, office and safe, but there were no other charges of misappropriation. On another occasion, Walker had

swapped $9000 of $100 notes from the Officer store with $50 notes at Woolworths’ Pakenham Central store. While no money was detected as missing, the move was considered not the supermarket’s usual practice, the court heard. Walker’s employment was terminated, and she was arrested by Cardinia CIU detectives in May. Magistrate Barry Schultz adjourned the matter so the unrepresented Walker

could seek legal advice. “It is a serious matter for which you could be sentenced to a term of imprisonment,” Mr Schultz said. Walker told the court she hadn’t sought a lawyer because she’d been in a lot of denial, recounting her mother’s recent death. “Well, that’s what brought it all to light,” Mr Schultz replied. Walker will next appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 28 August.

Show veteran bags award By Casey Neill Hampton Park man John Follett has been a Dandenong Show fixture for more than 60 years. His service to the Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society event and other local shows earned him a meritorious service award at the Victorian Agricultural Shows’ annual convention which was held in Shepparton on 1 and 2 July. “John has a wonderful community ethic and dedication, always ready to assist where he can,” the convention heard when John received the honour. “He is probably called on more than his fair share because of his willingness and pleasant manner. “He also has a wealth of knowledge regarding shows that is invaluable.” John, 74, said the honour rated a close second to the 60 years’ service award that Dandy Show legend Jack Rae presented him at last year’s show AGM. “Jack knows me longer than I have known Jack,” he said. Jack knew John’s dad, Alf, who was a Dandenong Show life member. “My grandparents were originally breeding Clydesdale horses where Moorabbin aerodrome is now,” John said. “My grandfather was a trustee of the Heatherton Recre-

ational Reserve in Ross Street, Heatherton. “The Heatherton carnival and bazaar; my father was president of for a number of years.” From there Alf joined the Dandenong Show in the early 1950s. “At that stage he was a market gardener at Noble Park,” John said. “Then Dad branched out into cattle, and we had 70 acres at Nar Nar Goon North. “We sold that and bought this property (in Clyde North). “We’ve gradually increased the size of it over the years to having two adjoining properties with the 320 acres.” He has about 160 cattle on the farm, mainly for meat but also for breeding. He has about 12 head on his 10 acres at Hampton Park. John automatically followed his dad into show life, “which was a custom of families back in those times”. He joined the Dandenong Show committee in 1971, was president in 1981, 2002 and 2003, and served on various subcommittees. John’s been a safety committee member since 2000, security chairman for more than 20 years and the grounds committee chairman since 2015. John was awarded life mem-

bership at Dandenong in 1992. He received the same honour from the Berwick Agricultural and Horticultural Society in 2007. He’s been a Berwick member since the 1980s, joined the committee in 1992 and is the occupational health and safety chairman. He attends meetings with the Greater Dandenong and Casey councils to elicit ongoing support for the Dandy and Berwick shows. John has volunteered on the Pakenham Show gates for many years, and now helps with the broadcast van for public announcements. He’s enjoyed “the friendships that you make, and the appreciation of the effort that you put in”. “I visit other shows as an observer and help wherever I can,” he said. “It’s my connection with the land, with agricultural aspects, and the mateships that you cultivate over the years with your involvement. “I’ve got friends throughout Victoria and also interstate.” John said he’d be involved with the shows indefinitely. “Hopefully, they don’t have to wheel me in a wheelchair to see it, but I hope to continue my role as far as assisting with the show,” he said.

Hidden pokies ‘damage’ By Bonny Burrows Protesters against Officer’s controversial poker machine proposal, including a gambling expert, have quizzed the local community on its gambling knowledge in a bid to understand the “damage” the 60-poker machine pub could do. With the possibility of the pub and gaming venue being approved by Cardinia Shire Council for 2 Station Street, Officer, anti-gambling group Bad Bets Australia conducted a faceto-face survey of 135 Officer residents. Monash University academic and leading gambling expert Dr Charles Livingstone said while 47 per cent of

respondents knew someone “personally hurt” by gaming machines, the results from the survey revealed there was still a lot for the local community to learn. While almost three quarters of residents understood poker machines were the second leading cause of crime in Australia after the illegal drug trade, many were unaware just how much money was lost to the gaming machines each year. Dr Livingstone said the survey revealed 85 per cent of the Officer community had underestimated the amount by about half. “Research usually shows that Australians don’t fully appreciate just how

much is lost on poker machines, every single year. More than 11 billion dollars is lost to this addictive product, with about half of the losses coming from people who have developed an addiction,” Dr Livingstone said. The link between gambling and family violence also shocked participants, with just 21 per cent aware that there was a correlation between poker machines in a suburb and the rate of domestic violence in that area. Dr Livingston said for “a long time”, people have possibly assumed there might be a link, but there was now a study from the Australian National University to prove it. “It clearly shows more pokies in a

suburb means there will be more domestic violence in that suburb.” With Cardinia Shire Council actively taking a stand against family violence with its Together We Can campaign, Bad Bets Australia spokesman Rohan Wenn said it was essential this application was rejected. “If you’re against domestic violence, you must oppose more poker machines,” Mr Wenn said. The State Government announced on 7 July the number of gaming machines in Victoria would be frozen for the next 25 years. Under the changes, the number of gaming machines in Victoria will re-

main capped at 27,372 and the maximum number of gaming machines in a single venue will be frozen at 105. “Not a single extra gaming machine will be allowed in Victoria for the next 25 years, helping limit gambling-related harm in our community.” “These reforms also provide certainty to pubs, clubs and hotels across Victoria, and have been informed by an extensive review that included more than 200 public submissions,“ Gaming and Liquor Regulation Minister Marlene Kairouz said. Cardinia Shire Council is yet to decide on the local application’s outcome.

“Two weeks after the Black Saturday fires, our house burnt down. We’d just moved down from Perth, so all our things were still packed in their boxes and everything was wiped out. The fire was caused by my daughter’s pedestal fan,” Marg Gason said. Pakenham resident Marg knows what it is like to have everything taken in an instant and be left with nothing. If it wasn’t for the tireless work of charities, Marg and her family wouldn’t have had anywhere to go. “After that happened, I knew what it was like to have to rely on services such as the 4Cs and the Salvation Army. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to pull through. That’s where my dream started to run my own op shop, so I could give back to the community that had helped me so much,” she said. After months of looking, a lease opened up beside the 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre in Pakenham, and Marg opened up Giving it a Second Chance op shop. “It took us over six months of searching for a space to set up, when we finally found the place where we are now next to the 4Cs. When I saw it, I couldn’t believe how perfect it was to be right next to them. We have such a good relationship with the 4Cs and we are constantly helping each other out.” 4Cs general manager Cheryl Daly couldn’t speak more highly of Marg and all the good work she does for them. “Marg has such a heart; she always helps us out and helps the community in a wider sense. Part of what 4Cs does is house families who are fleeing domestic violence, and Marg helps to set them up,” Cheryl said. “For these families, they usually leave with only the clothes on their backs, with no crockery, no bedding, or anything - that’s where Marg comes in. She helps with everything from clothing, shoes, and games for the kids.

‘Skids’ boss behind bars By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren North man has been jailed for being the “architect” of the notorious South East Skids hoon meets as well as drug trafficking and firearm offences. During sentencing, Caspar De Waij, 23, was chastised by County Court judge Lisa Hannan for his disregard for the law in organising “high-risk driving on public streets” that endangered crowds of spectators. She read out a damning text message from De Waij on 23 August that declared “the South (East Skids) is coming with a bang” ahead of a meet captured on CCTV. “Buckle up and hold on to your mum’s t**s. “It’s time to just get out and smash sets. And let’s lose cars to taskforce ‘I spend more money chasing hoons than sex offenders’.” In the lead-up, a procession of Skids hoons had been marched through Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Some were jailed, some had their cars crushed. But De Waij wrote: “Let’s bring back the old days.” He was arrested two days later. On 11 July, Judge Han-

nan said it was a very serious, calculated and pre-meditated example of reckless conduct endangering serious injury. He also pleaded guilty to being a prohibited person possessing a 0.41-calibre shotgun found in Narre Warren and a loaded 0.44 leveraction rifle found under a bed in Carnegie. The rifle, found with 19 rounds of ammunition, had been stolen from a Cranbourne address. De Waij dropped it at the house with about $5000 worth of ecstasy and ketamine, just before driving himself to The Alfred hospital to treat a shotgun wound. Police discovered matching ecstasy tablets and matching rifle ammo as well as $4750 of stolen jewellery in De Waij’s BMW. According to police intercepts, he obtained the BMW in return for a drug debt. This series of offences began just five weeks after De Waij had been released from custody in April 2016. He had a “substantial” criminal history, including speeding at 240km/h on a freeway. His latest offending breached a community corrections order.

In 2013, he’d addressed a road trauma awareness course - an attitude that proved either “insincere” or “short-lived”, Judge Hannan said. His prospects of rehabilitation were “guarded at best”. “In my view you are an arrogant young man who has not learnt from prior experience in the justice system.” Judge Hannan noted the Dutch-born De Waij had a childhood marred by trauma without “real guidance”, and a diagnosed borderline personality disorder. He had claimed he had been shot, stabbed, kidnapped, abused multiple substances and had a head injury. “I hope you have the determination and courage to make the changes necessary to step out of the revolving door of drugs and custody,” Judge Hannan said. She said she must balance De Waij’s possible rehabilitation with the need to protect the community from his “entrenched” offending. De Waij was jailed for 32 months, with a minimum of 20. He had already served 321 days in pre-sentence remand.

Many people in the Casey community, including more than one Loren, were surprised recently by a series of signs along Fisheries Road placed by a mystery romantic proposing to his girlfriend. After many days of searching, the Cranbourne News can reveal the signs were put in place by Narre Warren South resident Adam Kondarios. And folks, Loren said 'yes'. The recipient of the marriage proposal, Loren Fuccio, has been quiet on the subject with it taking more than a full week for us to hunt her down. As it turns out, Loren and Adam have escaped the Australian winter and instead have been enjoying a European summer. Victim battles life sentence By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Anne and Beth are forgotten figures in the justice system. 170238 for compensation from the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal. But Anne said Beth was underfunded for her ongoing therapy and support needs, and barely thought of in the sentencing equation. Before Beth was accepted for the NDIS, her $12,000 of annual disability support funding was woefully inadequate, according to Anne.

It meant Anne had to scrap for years to top up funds for Beth’s therapies and transport for weekly shopping. For an idea of the shortfall, consider the NDIS pays Beth $42,000 a year. It was the first time she could get funding for two pairs of customised shoes. Beth got limited compensation from the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal - $35,000 for a modified bath-

Picture: GARY SISSONS room and $7000 for being stabbed. Under the tribunal rules, a primary victim receives up to $60,000 for medical, counselling and safety expenses. It includes compo for two years’ loss of income up to $20,000. There are further payments of up to $10,000 for suffering acts of violence. The victim may also sue the offender.

Justice is a hollow word for two Berwick victims destroyed by a man’s brutal act. ‘Anne’, who is in her 70s, and her 40-something daughter ‘Beth’ have remained victims more than 10 years after Beth was viciously stabbed and beaten unconscious by the man in her home. It left her permanently maimed and with a significant brain injury. It robbed her of her social life, her relationship with her kids, meaningful work, her ability to drive and her independence. Anne and Beth cannot be legally identified because the convicted perpetrator awaits trial for a subsequent violent offence. Their suffering continues long after the matter was decided in court and after the offender was released from jail, said Anne. “Beth has had everything taken away from her,” Anne said. “It would crush anyone’s spirit. It has crushed mine.” Traditionally victims of crime have been at the periphery of the justice system but now they’re prominent in the state’s law-and-order debate. The state government has announced a review into the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT), introduced tougher sentences for serious crimes and will create a Sentencing Guidelines Council. Last year, a Victorian Law Reform Commission completed a separate review into improving access to justice for victims-of-crime. Anne said drastic action was required. She and Beth made their pain known to the court through victim impact statements. They also applied

In the Supreme Court judgement against the offender, the severe injuries and “untold damage” on Beth and her family was recognised. It was weighed up with the illnesses, griefs and abuses of the offender, as well as his criminal history. “He should have been sentenced for life for what he did,” Anne said. “I heard yesterday on the radio that the offenders have to have a fair go. Why do they get a fair go?” Beth remains angry at having no work prospects. She finds it hard to accept her station is performing simple tasks at a disability enterprise for 64 cents an hour. After a while, she got sick of the courses of counselling, and the weekly therapy to arrest her slumped body and her paralysed hand. Carers are required to drive her to do her shopping, for outings and for domestic tasks. Her mobility has deteriorated, she now goes shopping in a wheelchair. Beth’s relationship with her own children became distant. Her elderly mother lives separately and is concerned for the future when she can’t look after Beth. “I thought my daughter would be looking after me. We’d have wonderful times out but it’s not like that at all,” Anne said. “I just don’t want her to go to a home.” Crime Victims Support Association president Noel McNamara said there was help available, like counselling, financial assistance and volunteers to accompany victims to court. But there’s not a lot of government funding, and besides, whatever the money, it doesn’t cure all. “It’s very hard to fix a broken heart”.

Opinion Warning signs I have sent the following message about the proposed suburb of McPherson to the City of Casey on a contact form and have no idea whether it was transmitted. The name of the suburb honours a pioneer of Clydesdale, near Yandoit, instead of a Clyde pioneer as claimed by the researchers engaged by the City of Casey. This suburb is supposed to have been named after a resident of Clyde but as has been pointed out to you, the McPherson family lived at Clydesdale. A simple search on Trove will show that there is no McPherson, Clyde link and countless results can be found for McPherson, Clydesdale; this place being in Mt Franklin Shire north of Daylesford. Police are looking for this ute following an incident in Pakenham last month.

Teen harassed Police are searching for a four-door purple ute, allegedly involved in a Pakenham incident last month. Investigators have been told a teenage girl was walking along King Street between 1pm and 2pm on Friday 23 June when a man in a vehicle slowed down near her. The man then allegedly yelled out to her several times, making the victim uncomfortable. She did not know the man, and later reported the matter to police. On Friday 7 July, a little before 5pm, the Cranbourne Berwick News Facebook page published a short article about yet another Friday night smash on the Monash Freeway. A woman was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition following the crash believed to have been between a car and a truck. Stories about the Freeway always attract a lot of attention online and this one was no different; here is how our readers reacted: Tammy Kane Radford: Once again an incident on the Monash involving a car and a truck! All too common occurrence of late. Seriously, something has to be done to see why there are weekly incidents on the Monash causing chaos. Is it the road works? A vulnerable species of native orchid has been granted a second lease of life thanks to a Cranbourne-based botanist and the Victorian Royal Botanic Gardens. Dr Noushka Reiter has propagated the seeds of the nationally threatened Elegant Spider Orchid (Caladenia Formosa) in her labs at the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens. Dr Reiter has been working with orchids for about 10 years and runs the Orchids Conservation Program for the Royal Botanic Gardens of Victoria. She says the work that has been put into recovering this particular flower has come to fruition as the flowers are reintroduced into the wild in regional Victoria in the coming weeks. “The Caladenia Formosa was formerly widespread in Western Victoria and South Australia but have reduced in numbers over about the last 150-200 years due to land clearance, weeds and rabbits,” she said. “There are less than 100 of these known in the wild, but we’ve been working on this and four other species thanks to Landcare funding from the Federal Government.” Dr Reiter and her team have been working with the incredibly small and delicate orchid seeds, helping them to propagate in a particular type of fungi. “We have been propagating them with mycorrhizal fungi,” she said. “All orchids are reliant upon fungi to propagate the fungi transfer carbon and various nutrients to the orchid; it works kind of like their root system.” “Orchid seeds are the smallest known plant seeds we have, so they don’t have the lovely nu-

She said there was no value anyone could place on preserving and revegetating the natural biodiversity of the Australian landscape. “Not losing a single species is really important and we can’t overvalue the biodiversity we have, and it’s something worth saving for future generations.” The Australasian Native Orchid Society has been helping Dr Reiter achieve her goals for almost 10 years and Richard Thompson from the society said the level of community involvement had been a great help. “There have been plenty of local people to come along and see what we are doing,” he said. “Quite a lot of the planting we are doing is on private land and we have found the landowners are keen to help too.” Mr Thompson said he was surprised at first to learn how interested the farmers were in helping reintroduce endangered plant species. “I’m a city person myself, but these farmers really care about the land as long as it is not threatening their productivity, they are keen to be involved and help.” Dr Reiter and the team of volunteers will also be reintroducing of several more rare species including Thelymitra Mackibbinii (Brilliant Sun Orchid), Caladenia Colorata (Coloured Spider Orchid) and Caladenia Versicolor (Candy Spider Orchid). The reintroduction of these orchids has been made possible through funding from the Federal Government’s National Landcare Program in partnership with Parks Victoria, Trust for Nature, the WCMA and the Grampians Threatened Species Hub.

Crim history deters bail By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Berwick man has been allegedly discovered unconscious in a car with stolen goods, drugs, weapons and more than $5000 cash just two weeks after being bailed on similar offences. Scott Mclean Rankine, 25, made an unsuccessful application for further bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 July. He had been originally bailed by Ringwood police on 9 June after being allegedly found with a known female and multiple knives, a Taser, a pouch of methamphetamine and ecstasy, and a marijuana joint in Ferntree Gully, the court was told. Rankine also allegedly had a set of number plates stolen from Berwick railway station earlier that month. The accused was next arrested unconscious with the female inside an unregistered purple Ford with false plates about 3.20am on 21 June. Rankine was found with cannabis, a joint, an orange

tablet, OC spray and 31 Xanax tablets. A police search of the car allegedly discovered methamphetamine, a machete with a 35 centimetre blade, extendable baton, a knife and another sharpened weapon. There were also bank cards and distinctively packaged $5820 cash and coins allegedly stolen in an aggravated burglary in Glen Waverley three days earlier. A further 30-centimetre machete and Uzi-brand handcuffs were then seized during a police raid of his home. Defence lawyer Manny Nicolosi said Rankine claimed to have won the seized cash during an $11,000 win on pokies, and intended to fight the Ringwood charges. Rankine would show cause for bail at the family home with strict conditions such as level-3 intensive CISP supervision, night curfew, non-association with the female companion and regular reporting to police, Mr Nicolosi submitted.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said she was concerned that Rankine kept offending while skipping appointments on his third community corrections order and just being released from jail. “This person has just served a term of imprisonment, and it made no difference to his offending. “Every step has been taken with Mr Rankine. He’s done CISP before, and short sentences have failed to deter him.“ Mr Nicolosi said Rankine was non-compliant with his latest community corrections order due to the death of a close family friend. His grief led him to rekindling his meth habit, Mr Nicolosi said. Ms O’Donnell took into account Rankine’s 10-page criminal history, saying the “ultimate outcomes aren’t favourable“ for the accused in this case. Rankine’s bail was refused. He was remanded to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 9 August.

Ugly example By Cam Lucadou-Wells Football Federation Victoria is investigating an ugly incident which led to the abandonment of an under-10s Casey Comets soccer game. In the 18 June match, an eight-year-old Comets player is alleged to have felled a Peninsula Strikers opponent with a tackle, and then spun and kicked the player in the back. Strikers coach Troy Hicks allegedly ran in from the sidelines and loudly remonstrated with the Comets player at close quarters. The father of the Comets player then entered the fray, pushing Mr Hicks away from his son. Up to a dozen adult spectators entered the pitch, and the game was abandoned at the 15-minute mark. In the aftermath, it emerged the Comets players and parents had bonded at a kickboxing gym session just days before the incident. As a result, the team’s coach Michael Somerville was dismissed by Comets administrators. Some of the facts are in dispute, but Star News understands the two young players involved have been traumatised by the incident, missed school and taken a break from the game. Mr Hicks said he would face an FFV tribunal over the incident on 26 July. Depending on the outcome, Victoria Police may also investigate, he said. He said he wouldn’t comment on the incident until after the hearing.

Some Comets affiliated people say Mr Hicks yelled threateningly into the face of the Comets player. A Strikers parent says Mr Hicks had stepped in to protect the kicked player from further attack. Casey Comets president Dawn Stone said the incident “wasn’t Troy’s finest hour” but its severity had been exaggerated. “The kick wasn’t very nice. It happens in sport but it doesn’t happen every week in our game. “The coach was being very protective of his player. He didn’t threaten anybody, he was upset.” She said the issue was being fuelled by a discontent Mr Somerville, who was sacked because the kickboxing session included physical “tactics” that avoided detection by a referee. “It’s a magnificent art but I wouldn’t bring it as a form of coaching for eight and nineyear-old children,” Ms Stone said. “At this age, the competitive side is secondary. It’s about teaching the love of the game and development.” Mr Somerville was bemused that he’d been stood down while Mr Hicks was still coaching. He described the kickboxing session at a Comets parent’s gym as a “bonding” session for parents and children. He denied the session involved football or “training my boys to be violent”. “To blame the kickboxing is just ridiculous. I’ve never had issues with the other boys. “The kickboxing lesson had

zero to do with how the player behaved. He knows what he did was extremely wrong but he doesn’t know why he did it.” Mr Somerville, who as a former Strikers coach “didn’t get on” with Mr Hicks, accused Mr Hicks of a “ferocious assault” on the boy. “He should have shown more self-control. Under no circumstances can a coach run out on the field. “The boy was terrified to have an adult run at him like that and come screaming at him.” Referee Alexander May, who is also a friend of Mr Somerville, said he would have sent the Comets player off for the kick if he had the chance. “(Mr Hicks) didn’t run to the player on the ground, so to protect that player, but to verbally assault the boy who did it. “For the first few days, the boys were shocked and upset. It’s because of the behaviour of the grown-up people.” FFV has a child safety policy, declaring a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse and that all children have a right to feel safe. According to the code of conduct, speaking to a minor in an “overly harsh, threatening, intimidating, shaming, derogatory, demeaning or humiliating” way is prohibited. In a statement, FFV said there was an investigation “ongoing in line with the Federation’s existing Grievance, Disciplinary and Tribunal procedures”. “FFV will not be commenting on the investigation.”

Pokie losses mounting up By Cam Lucadou-Wells Pokie losses in Casey are expected to rise to at least $126 million in 2016'17, according to official statistics. With one month’s figures yet to be counted, the 2016-'17 total stands at $116.7 million. It should comfortably pass the previous year's $124.8 mark in losses. It comes as anti-pokies figures criticised the State Government’s announced freeze on poker machine numbers in Victoria until 2042. Tom Cummings, who is fighting

against Berwick Spring Hotel’s application for 10 extra poker machines, said the freeze was a missed opportunity. “It sounds great, but it isn’t. “What they’re doing is doing nothing for the next 25 years.” He said the government would likely face a “large amount of blowback” if it sought to increase machine numbers. South Eastern Metropolitan Greens MP Nina Springle said the freeze would continue pokies’ ripping of “bil-

lions of dollars” from Victorian communities. “The government claims this move will limit gambling-related harm, but significant harm is already being done by the huge number of new pokies that have been approved in Victoria over the past decade,” Ms Springle said. “Local councils have opposed the majority of applications for new pokie licenses over the past 18 months, but Victoria’s gambling regulator has continued to approve new machines regardless of the social harm they’re doing.”

She said the Greens proposed $1 bet limits, mandatory pre-commitment and more powers for councils to reject applications for poker machines. Monash University gambling researcher Charles Livingstone said under the freeze, the harms would become more entrenched. In 2010, the Productivity Commission estimated the social cost of problem gambling in Australia at $4.7 billion a year. “For every person directly and seriously harmed by gambling, we know that six others are affected,” Dr Living-

stone said. “Families, children, spouses, colleagues, employers, and friends all suffer significantly.” Gaming and Liquor Regulation Minister Marlene Kairouz said “not a single extra gaming machine will be allowed in Victoria for the next 25 years” which would help limit gambling-related harm. More harm minimisation measures relating to pokie machines will be announced in coming months, she said.

Smart work with phone gets issue into clearer focus By Cam Lucadou-Wells Amazing what you can do with a smartphone. Berwick teenager Callum Pritchard has just smartly filmed and edited a short film that stretches the potential of his hand-held device. His film Behind Closed Doors a pointed look at a teenager living in a domestic violence household boasts many technical feats. There’s slow-mo action, dramatic soundtrack, fast, silky editing and crisp lighting. Though there’s a roaming hand-held feel, it’s easy to forget it’s captured on a smartphone. It’s Callum’s second entry in the annual SmartFone Flick Fest (SF3) - an international film festival for films shot only on smartphones and tablets. He says he learnt much from analysing the winners in last year’s comp.

“They were inspiring. It’s interesting how the winner actually filmed as if a person was walking around with a phone. “It didn’t seem so put-on.” As with many 14-year-olds, the Beaconhills College student is not threatened by filming on a smartphone. Basically, the device is always in his pocket, ready for filming on a second’s notice. However, his mind is also on the quality of lighting, the sharpness of image. He then used simple movie-editing software on his tablet to slow down the action and weave together the scenes shot on location around Berwick. “It’s pretty user-friendly. You can pretty much learn it all in one sitting.” His film’s topical, heavy subject matter was chosen because simply, domestic violence shouldn’t hap-

pen, he said. “It’s thought that domestic violence just affects the parents but it also affects the people around them. “It affects so many people. I think just getting the word out there might just help.” Callum centred the film on a teenage girl, starkly showing her angst and isolation while her parents fight. “She didn’t have anyone to reach out to. There was no one there to reach out and ask ‘Are you OK?’”. Callum is already setting his sights on a career in film, inspired by the likes of The Conjuring horror maestro James Wan. “I think that it’s just the way he goes about his films. Megaswim for MS research By Victoria Stone-Meadows Teams of people came together at the Casey RACE swimming pool to raise funds for MS research by swimming laps for 24 consecutive hours on Saturday 8 July and Sunday 9 July. The MS 24 Hour Megaswim aims to raise as much money as possible to help people who are suffering from the disease as well as to help find a cure. Teams also competed for prizes and trophies during the event as well as joined in activities to keep everyone motivated and have a great time. The event attracted support from groups such as the City of Casey, Casey RACE and the Kiwanis Club of Berwick. MS Event co-ordinator Kelly Tyndall said the Casey 24 Hour Swim event was a great success. “It was an amazing event and everything went really

Furious residents have slammed the company behind the controversial Bunyip North quarry proposal for ignoring their concerns. At an emotionally charged public meeting on 23 March, residents of Bunyip, Garfield and surrounding communities met with Hanson Construction Materials, expecting to have an open discussion. Instead, residents have slammed the meeting as a “waste of time”. Mount Cannibal and District Preservation Group treasurer David Bywater said Bunyip Hall was “chock-a-block full” of residents wanting an update on the 134-hectare granite quarry, mooted for a site about 500 metres from local icon Mount Cannibal. “But then the new project manager came in and said it was decided the content of the meeting was not about community information, but the process of the EES (Environmental Effects Statement),” Mr Bywater said. “We said, ‘that’s OK as long as you answer questions’, which they agreed to.” However, the open discussion was

He said the community was disappointed by the meeting. “Not one question that was put - and there would have been 30 plus questions put - not one was successfully, honestly or completely answered,” Mr Bywater said. “It seems the whole point of the meeting was for Hanson to tick off one of the requirements of the EES which is to engage with the community.” The EES was ordered by State Planning Minister Richard Wynne in 2015 to identify the large-scale project’s significant environmental effects and propose measures to reduce these. According to those in attendance, Hanson told the estimated 100-person crowd that it was just beginning the statement - due to take two years “however there are no red flags”. Mr Bywater said he just about fell over. “How can they say there are no red flags when they haven’t done the EES?” he said. Accusing the company of trying to “water down” the environmental impacts, Mr Bywater said it was pretty clear “if you dig a big hole there’s go-

Dicky Custerson was always up for supporting a cause. The founder and principal of sports and entertainment management company A Positive Move has supported many over the years. None was as close to his heart as Neale Daniher’s battle to find a cure for Motor Neuron Disease. Dicky participated in the first Daniher Drive which was aimed at raising funds and awareness for the Fight MND quest. The fun, four-day road trip is now in its third year and has so far raised $267,297 of its goal of $1 million. Sadly, Dicky passed away after a short battle with cancer late last year and was represented in the 2016 event by his wife

Rail loop petition By Bonny Burrows Calls for an extended rail line from Cranbourne to Kooweerup are gathering pace as the Kooweerup airport becomes a very real possibility. A community petition for an extended rail line between the two towns has obtained more than 1000 supporters since its creation three months ago, with locals backing creator David Dobson’s plans for a Cranbourne train line loop to free up busy roads and reduce isolation in rural areas. It follows the announcement an overseas investor has pledged to fund the $5 billion south east airport in Kooweerup. Under Mr Dobson’s proposal, the Cranbourne/Pakenham line would extend to include Kooweerup, Tooradin, Wonthaggi and Leongatha through the use of existing unused lines and the creation of new tracks. The Clyde North man said such rail loop would “help so much” if the international airport came to fruition. If green-lighted, the Kooweerup airport would rival Tullamarine in size, servicing up to 5 million domestic passenger movements annually. “We’ve seen how Tullamarine is - the traffic to the airport is hectic. So let’s be proactive about it and get ready (for a local airport) with safer alternatives,” Mr Dobson said. “And then when/if the airport happens, there will already be a ful-

“A Paky-Cranbourne loop would free up a lot of high traffic and move a lot of people quicker to their destinations, and the elderly who prefer to catch the train into the city for appointments rather than drive could do so.” While the petition has yet to be formally presented to local councils, it has been discussed “positively” with Greater Dandenong. The City of Casey has previously indicated its support for an improved rail network. Mayor Sam Aziz told Star News on 4 July road infrastructure, including a better rail network, was the “missing piece” of the air-

port’s puzzle. An airport couldn’t be supported with current infrastructure, councillor Aziz said. Cardinia Shire has also in the past hinted at the importance of rail upgrades if a south east airport were to exist. Mr Dobson said he was meeting with government representatives in the coming weeks. Cranbourne residents have a new way to dispose of their old plastic plant pots. The Bunnings store is part of a new trial recycling program. The pots aren’t able to be recycled through kerbside programs because of contamination issues with cleaning and sorting processes. So Bunnings Cranbourne is encouraging residents to bring in their plastic pots - no matter how old, dirty or broken - and drop them in a designated cage. Polymer Processes will pick up and recycle the pots, and Garden City Plastics will turn them into new pots for use by greenlife growers. A Garden City Plastics spokesperson said recycling plastic used less energy than producing it from raw materials. The energy saving is about 56 gigajoules per tonne of plastic - the electricity used in two Australian homes in a year. Bunnings Cranbourne complex manager Simon Taylor said they were excited to trial the new service. “It’s a simple and effective way to do our bit for the environment,” he said.

Help needed to ward off the winter cold Pakenham-base developer Parklea has teamed up with local charity 4Cs for the second year running to provide food to vulnerable people this winter. From Saturday 1 July, Parklea has been accepting nonperishable food donations that will be passed on to 4Cs to make sure no-one goes hungry in the colder months. Last year the Pakenham and surrounding community donated 330kg of food to 4Cs to provide meals and staple foods to struggling families. 4Cs general manager Cheryl Daly said she was hoping this year’s food drive would be just as successful as last year’s. “With over 300 families accessing our food room service each month, these items have

made a wonderful contribution,” she said. “Thankyou to everyone who willingly donated items for the food drive.” Ms Daly said winter could be a really tough time for families experiencing desperate situations due to violence and other issues that lead to poverty. “Over the winter period many families have been doing it tough and have needed an extra hand to get them through," she said. Hope for local homeless By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey council is set to establish and chair a homelessness network for the Casey Cardinia Region following a unanimous vote at a council meeting on Tuesday 4 July. The decision follows a meeting between Casey council and service providers in the region which help people in precarious housing situations. The meeting took place on 7 June this year with representatives from WAYSS, the Cranbourne Salvation Army, the Southern Homelessness Services Network, ERMHA, The Andrews Centre and Rotary Club of Cranbourne.

This led the council to set up a network for people facing homelessness in the municipality. The new network will bring together the currently available options for emergency housing and other outreach programs in Casey to ensure a multiagency approach to homelessness. The report that came to council from the meeting also recommends that Casey hosts a housing summit with the Victorian Minister for Housing Martin Foley. Casey Councillor Geoff Ablett, along with Cr Milla Gilic, is the driver behind this plan, and he said the meeting made it clear the available service

to people in region was scattered. “The great thing we discovered is there are people that have been doing these things, but have never actually met each other,” he said. “The meeting we held brought it all together and that’s what it is all about.” “What we are discovering is there are some organisations already operating in City of Casey that have heard of the others, but we want to bring everyone together and that may mean a bigger group to lobby for Casey to address the issues that vulnerable people face.” Cr Ablett said the aim of the housing summit and the homelessness net-

work was to bring the many service providers in Casey together to better manage all the factors that could lead to vulnerable housing situations. “The idea is helping people overcome and seek that help they need, which is a very difficult hurdle,” he said. “We aim to bring everyone together and get a better understanding regionally, and hopefully find the best model for homelessness and help each other.” “In theory, this will then springboard into a commitment for a permanent solution for homelessness and vulnerable people in the Casey Cardinia region.”

While the City of Casey wants to help solve the homeless problem in the area, Cr Ablett said they could also extend that into more social welfare support. “It is quite exciting; pooling resources to get a better bang for our buck and helping more people,” he said. “There is a need for this now, but we are also advocating for rehab centres and things like that so council is committed to that as part of advocacy program.” “We want to take all these issues head-on, and this summit is the first step.”

They’re beacons of service to Rotary By Cam Lucadou-Wells Clad in badges and regalia, two youth exchange students were walking signboards for Mick Morland’s service as a Rotarian. Caitlyn Langdon, who had been on a Rotary exchange in 2012, and visiting German student Lisa Bayer stood out from the vast funeral throng who gathered to pay respects to Mr Morland on 5 July. Mr Morland was among the Rotary Club of Berwick panel that selected the then-16-year-old Ms Langdon for the life-changing exchange. “He basically encouraged me to try my best and to take every chance,” Ms Langdon recalled, adding that the year-long German exchange had changed her life dramatically. When she returned, Ms Langdon kept in touch with the service club that generously sponsored her. Mr Morland would routinely rib her: “I thought I got rid of you years ago!” Looking back, she remembers how Mr Morland parked himself behind the barbecue, happily chatting and turning sausages at the Rotary club’s Australia Day events. High-tech spin sharpens table-top skills By Cam Lucadou-Wells Table tennis has hit a new era of silver service at Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Centre. The activities club has scored a $1200 appliance that automatically serves ping pong balls with varying slice and spin, and also catches the returns of serve. With a 64-program repertoire of serves, it is akin to what was used by the English and Swedish teams to prepare for the 2016 Olympics, says player David McKay. Mr McKay said the sport was great for honing the motor skills of young and old. For senior players, it was an effective barrier to dementia; for the young, it is a fun, non-contact sport. At the community house, Mr McKay and other players take part in over-50s social matches. They have also been tutoring Beaconsfield Primary School students in the game. Sometimes it pays not to overthink things. Cree Oliveria, 18, of Nossal High School, won her way into the state final of the Plain English Speaking Awards with an inspired, last-minute speech on the success of the TV show Gogglebox. The keen philosophy student and debater took the name of her speech from a line by 19th-century English thinker John Stuart Mill: “It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied.” But Cree argued in ‘In defence of happy pigs’ that Gogglebox’s success showed that happiness and social cohesion did not need to bow to “intellectual snobbery”. “If something gives you pleasure, it doesn’t matter if it’s high-brow or not. “This kind of snobbery in our approach to culture and watching TV is unfounded.” She says watching Gogglebox and reality TV generally gives “extraordinary insight” into what people are actually like. Cree had hastily compiled her speech for the regional final after a fellow Nossal student pulled out sick. As a result, the speech had more levity than her previous entries on the death of indigenous languages and the importance of critical thinking. “Now I’m just practising the prepared speech. I’m trying to memorise it as much as possible.” The state final is held by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority on 26 July.

The Pakenham Warriors hardly needed any reminding that there’s more to life than just basketball, but on Saturday at ‘The Colosseum’ at Cardinia Life they showed just what was possible when the local area’s biggest sporting association banded together behand a cause much larger than their own. For their latest triple-header - games featuring all three of their Big V representative teams; the Division 2 senior men, the Division 2 Youth League men; and the Division 2 Youth League women - they were all decked out in pink for a night to raise some muchneeded funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). All told, the Warriors raised a grand total of $2,934.05 through donations and fundraising activities and pink was the colour of the day for players, coaches, support staff, and fans alike. Pakenham and District Basketball Association president Alan Lee said it was touching to see the community embrace the event with such enthusiasm. “Pink Sports Day is an amazing show of support for locals affected by breast cancer,” he said. “One of the reasons we participated in Pink Sports Day was to ensure local women and their families know that they don’t have to go through breast cancer alone, and that our community is right behind them.” Nearly 50 Australian women every day will be told they have breast cancer. According to Cancer Australia, this year it’s estimated that the risk of an individual being diagnosed with breast cancer by their 85th birthday will be one in 14 - one in 715 males, and one in eight females. On Saturday, the Warriors held their first ever Pink Sports Day following the news that Lisa Pollard, the 33-year-old sister of Warriors Youth League men’s coach Darren Thomas had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. The day kicked off at 4pm with Thomas leading his side up against the Western Port Steelers and the clash went right down to the wire with the Steelers stealing a one-point victory - 60-59 - with a banked three-pointer in the dying stages from Brittney Suarjaya. She led the way for her team with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks while Ellie Coutts finished with a 12-point, 16-rebound double-double to go along with four blocks for the Warriors. Wickers all the way By David Nagel Berwick defeated Narre Warren by 49 points on Saturday but two passages of play in particular sum up the difficulty of rolling the Wickers for this South East Football Netball League crown. At the 15-minute mark of the first term, Narre Warren ruckman Trent Papworth had a shot for goal to give the Magpies the opening two majors of the match - the perfect start in their toughest assignment of the season. An early goal to Dale Gawley had the Magpies up and about, and their ability to absorb Berwick’s pressure gave a real sense of optimism heading into the middle stages of the first term. Relentless pressure saw Papworth presented with a golden opportunity -albeit on his wrong foot - to apply some scoreboard pressure to the ladder leaders. He missed and - just like a stalking Cheetah - the Wickers went BANG! A 65-metre kick-out from Ash Smith cleared an assembled pack, the ball falling into the hands of Lucas Jellyman-Turner, who fired off the handball to a surging Reece Piper, who gathered cleanly in the centre circle and took off, taking 10 steps before launching a bomb from the centre square that sailed straight over the goal-umpires head. A scintillating 14 seconds of footy that had to be seen to be believed. Narre Warren champion Nick Scanlon answered with a brilliant soccer-goal of his own ... before the Wickers struck again. A contested ball on Narre Warren’s half-forward line spilled to Will Arthurson, who dished off to Trent Thomas, who handballed to Smith who spotted a one-on-one battle in front of the new electronic scoreboard at Edwin Flack Reserve. Jimmy Magner versus Jace Kelly, Magner holds Kelly off with his left hand, juggles the ball in his right before kicking to Andrew Morozoff who marks strongly at the top of the goal square. Netball hits a drawn-out spell By David Nagel It feels like a magic wand has been waived and a spell cast on the South East Football Netball League after Cranbourne and ROC fought out a thrilling draw at Casey Field on Saturday. The teams couldn’t be split on 39 points each, the third time in as many weeks a draw has taken place in SEFNL. Berwick and Hampton Park started the enchanted run with the Wickers and Cranbourne continuing the magiccarpet ride a week later. Cranbourne was lucky to escape with a draw against the Kangaroos who blew the Eagles away with an electrifying first term. With Courtney Linhart (goal shooter) and Gemma Stacey (goal attack) sharing the load up front, the Kangas scored 14-6 in their best quarter of netball for the season. Ash Barnett (centre), Olivia Hamilton (wing attack) and Amy Jones (wing defence) were dominating the midcourt, while Laura Quinn (goal de-

fence) and Mel Overdyk (goal keeper) had a firm grip on things in defence. The Eagles narrowed the margin over the next two quarters, but still trailed by four at the final change. The home side needed someone to step up in the final term and some key personnel responded. Tara Cecil (GK) and Jodie Holt (GD) did a magnificent job in defence, restricting the Kangaroos to just five goals in the last quarter, while Alanah Hardy (GA) was superb, scoring all nine of the Eagles goals. In the end, the teams couldn’t be split! Hampton Park’s season was in need of some urgent resuscitation and the Redbacks breathed new-life into their finals hopes with an upset 43-36 victory over Doveton. This was the beginning of a massive fortnight for the sixth-placed Redbacks, who had to defeat both Doveton (fourth) and Cranbourne (fifth) to keep a finals berth within reach. The Redbacks led from start to finish, leading by two, four and a solitary

goal at the first three breaks before firing up strongly in the final term. Brooke Kiely (GK), Karli Foster (GD) and Chloe Birch (WA) all stood tall while Stephanie Hille (GS) had a massive impact, shooting 11 lastquarter goals. Liz Edwards, Shae Gee, Akanisi Seeto and Hayley Stewart were solid contributors for the Doves. Tooradin, as expected, was simply too good all over the court for Pakenham, winning 72-26 at Toomuc Reserve. Alex Maher (GA) was in fantastic touch for the Seagulls, shooting 15 goals herself in a stunning 19-5 opening salvo from the premiership favourites. The Lions who trailed by 32 at half time, were far more competitive in the second half with Renae Joiner, Elayne Schneider and Carly Saunders doing a wonderful job through the midcourt. And Narre Warren tuned up for its mouth-watering clash against Beaconsfield with a resounding 24-goal victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve.

Mercedes-Benz crosses over By Alistair Kennedy The SUV/Coupe crossover genre that MercedesBenz GLC occupies is an interesting piece of design evolution which combines the functionality of an SUV with the looks of a coupe and it joins competitors such as the Range Rover Evoque, BMW X4, Jaguar F-Pace and, with its AMG 43 version, Porsche Macan. Viewed in profile, and at the rear, it’s easy to see the distinction between the two GLC models. Not so at the front where they share the same big, bold grille highlighted by the large Mercedes ‘three-pointed-star’ badge. There’s a bulkier bumper at the rear of the coupe above twin chrome exhaust tips. The differing profiles lead to the GLC coupe being longer (by 76 mm) but lower (by 40 mm) than the GLC wagon as well as being 152 kg lighter. All variants get daytime running lights and roll on 20-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels. Coupes are not renowned for their interior space but the GLC crossover version is a genuine four-seater. There’s good space in the two front seats with a nice balance of support and comfort. Rear seat passengers get the same shoulder, elbow and legroom as they would in the GLC wagon but, not unexpectedly, less headroom. It can still cope with three adults in the rear although, given the transmission tunnel, two plus a child in the middle would be preferable on long distance trips. Black-ash open pore wood trim is standard and surrounds a beautifully crafted interior layout. Luggage capacity with all rear seatbacks in place is an impressive 500 litres (just 50 litres

less than the wagon) expanding to 1400 litres, a more significant 200 litres less with the rear seats down. There are remote releases on the side of the boot to fold the seats. The GLC has additional, lockable, storage space under the floor. The high tail and smallish aperture means there’s a bit of a lift and some juggling for access to the boot but the interior is long and wide. Factory fuel consumption figures range from 5.8 litres per 100 km in the 220d and 250d to 7.4 L/100 km in the 250 with CO2 emissions between 151 and 173 grams per km. Not surprisingly the AMG C43 numbers are higher at 8.9 L/100 and 203 g/km. In addition to standard suite of safety features such as multiple airbags (9), ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution and electronic stability control all MercedesBenz GLC coupe variants come with Driver Assistance Package Plus which includes Distronic Plus cruise control with Steering Assist, Pre-Safe Brake and Pre-Safe Plus, Cross Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and two Isofix child seat mountings. There is also automatic emergency braking (Collision Prevention Assist Plus). External safety is covered by the Mercedes Active Bonnet system which raises the rear of the bonnet instantly upon impact to reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians. The upper models in the lineup feature a headup display that shows a lot of information. Infotainment features are controlled via the M-B Comand system using either a 7-inch or 8.3inch tablet-style screen depending on variant. Our car were fitted with Garmin Map Pilot

Mercedes-Benz GLC coupe combines sporty looks with SUV convenience. satellite navigation with voice input, or you can use the reasonably intuitive touchpad. The audio system is a 13-speaker Burmester with surround sound. WLAN with internet access for connected devices. The Mercedes-Benz controls layout takes a bit of getting used to with so many items collected together on steering wheels stalks. Benz owners that we’ve talked to love it and, once you’ve adapted to the setup, it does all make sense. Unfortunately on a couple of occasion during our test week we forgot that the chunky stalk on the right hand side wasn’t the turn indicator but rather the gear selector ... with embarrassing results as we switched gear into neutral. This is potentially dangerous and should be modified as soon as possible. External visibility is hampered by large pillars and the small, steeply sloped rear window with the latter meaning that the reversing camera really comes into play when parking.

Dynamic Body Control is standard on all GLC coupe variants and provides adjustable dampers to switch between Comfort and Sport settings to cater for different comfort and ride needs. There are also four drive modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport +. Our test car was the entry-level GLC 220d with the lower tuned turbo-diesel engine. From inside the fact that it’s diesel is barely noticeable. It proved to be sharp of the mark with its peak torque kicking in at just 1400 rpm and agile around the suburbs. On the motorway segment of our route it cruised effortlessly and quietly. We averaged fuel consumption of 6.9 L/100 km during our week-long test, around 18 per cent above the published figure but quite acceptable. Mercedes-Benz GLC coupe is a functional vehicle with head-turning sporty looks. As crossovers are designed to do it can serve twin purposes, the ability to work around town for family transport but also to provide a reasonable level of driving enjoyment than the typical mid-sized SUV.
