Mick’s big family By Cam Lucadou-Wells There were laughs - with hardly a dry eye - in a 1000-strong farewell to Casey’s popular, larger-than-life mayor Mick Morland OAM. Mr Morland, 67, who was tragically killed while crossing Princes Highway, Berwick, had a mission to make everybody happy, his wife Kay told the service at Berwick Church of Christ on 5 July. He was a husband, father, grandfather and uncle who devoted himself to his family. But Mr Morland’s family extended not just to genetics and blood it extended to the diverse crowd in the church. “This room is full to the brim with Mick’s family,” she said. The renowned story-teller loved people, regardless of gender, race or ability. Given half the chance, he would be your best friend, she said. “His mission was to bring laughter and joy to all he met. “The world would be a far better place if there were more Mick Morlands.” Ms Morland urged the gathering to keep talking about her late husband. “It keeps him alive in our hearts.” Others noted his legacy of feats as a councillor, Liberal Party member, Rotarian, football clubman and his family’s hero. He was above all a loving example to all, Reverend Ineke Giles said. She recounted Mr Morland’s message to a Narre Warren North Christmas service last year. He said that Christmas was about love. “It’s about family, it’s about caring about someone in the community who has a lot less than what you have. “It’s about giving someone a hug.
“It’s about telling your partner, children, grandchildren and your friends that you love them.” Gary Morland - draped in a Richmond Football Club scarf - told of how his older brother and he grew up in a family of eight children in Richmond. The household extended to 12 at times after they moved to a cement-sheeting house in then semi-rural Springvale. He and Mr Morland sometimes had to sleep head-to-toe. Mr Morland was a senior prefect at school and an accomplished runner, golfer, footballer, cricketer and squash player, brother Gary said. He was proud to be still the state’s 440-yard school sports record holder, noting with relish that the event’s distance changed to 400 metres the following year. Above all, Mr Morland was a “leader of men” who had that rare quality - he could “walk with kings” but not lose the common touch. “I always thought Mick had kind eyes and that led to a kind and compassionate heart.” Youngest brother Tom invoked the words of inspirational MND campaigner Neale Daniher, who said: “It’s not what you say but what you do.” Mr Morland was “a doer with a capital ‘D’,” Tom said. His grand-kids shared tributes. Their ‘Pa’ was loved for his tickling moustache-kisses, his jokes and play. Rotary past district governor Tim Moore paid respect to Mr Morland’s tireless efforts for the service club, including hosting seven international exchange students. Continued page 5

Community News Council adopts 2017-18 Budget The City of Casey adopted its 2017-21 Council Plan and 2017-18 Budget at a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday 27 June. The plan outlines eight key strategic objectives for the next four years and is part of an overall vision to create Casey as Australia’s most liveable city. Digital neighbourhood eye By Victoria Stone-Meadows When City of Casey locals Aaron Grant and Tammie McKill took over as administrators of the Casey Crime Page on Facebook in June 2016, they had no idea how big the page would get. There were just over 5000 members when the pair took responsibility for the page and have since grown membership to over 30,000 people. The page acts as a community crime watch resource and a place where members of the Casey community can keep each other informed of what is happening in the region. Mr Grant said when he and Ms McKill took on the responsibility of
the page, they were forced to put rules in place. “When we took over we had to put some strict guidelines because previously there were no rules to stop trolls from attacking our page,” Mr Grant said. “We want people to use respectful language and try to keep it a nice peaceful page with information about what is happening, not a witch hunt.” Crime pages and community noticeboards have sprung up all over Facebook in recent years as a kind of replacement of traditional community information channels. While there has been some criticism of the Casey crime Page from members of the community who feel it
interferes with police work, Mr Grant said he has received positive feedback from members of the police force. “It is definitely a learning process but I have spoken to the police a few times and asked them if our page is helping them do their job and they always say yes,” Mr Grant said. “An issue we face is people sometimes use our page to report a crime rather than going directly to the police.” “We take it upon ourselves to ask them if they reported to the police and about 50 per cent of them they say they haven’t.” “We always encourage them to go to the police because they aren’t going to anything about it unless people are
reporting crime through their police system.” In recent times, Mr Grant and Ms McKill have utilised the strong numbers and active participation on their Facebook page to help others. When four-year-old Brax Kyle was killed in Berwick in April this year, the Casey Crime Page started a fund-raiser to help his family. Similarly, with 24-year-old Luke Staveley lost his life in June, the page admins rallied support and fund-raised for the Staveley family as well. Mr Grant says community support is a direction he would like to see the page move into as well as acting as digital neighbourhood watch. “We don’t want to hold a fund-
raiser each and every week but if there is a story that really affects people and has touched with them, we want to do what we can to support the victims of crime,” he said. “At the end of the day, technology is the biggest thing in our lives and will have to play a massive part going forward in keeping people informed and up to date with local happenings and support.” Mr Grant believes the Casey Crime Page has had a positive impact on the community and hopes he can continue to be a positive influence. “It has brought the community closer together,” he said.

Carol’s art is up to scratch - it’s official A scratchboard artist from Cranbourne has received awards for her work that put her in the top echelon of artists who work with this medium. Carol Gorenko took up scratchboard art about four years ago and has come leaps and bounds in the scratchboard community. Scratchboard art uses a Masonite board that has a layer of white clay, and then a layer of black India ink over the top of that. Artists use fine tools such as scalpels to gently scratch away at the ink to create an image on the board. The artform is not widely practised in Australia and Ms Gorenko made the move to scratchboard after many years of painting and drawing
in other mediums. “I’ve always been into the arts and have spent many years doing oils paints, pencil work and things like that,” she said. Ms Gorenko recently took home the top prize at an art competition in Brisbane in the scratchboard category as well as winning the award for best in show. “Scratchboard entries in the art show came from all over Australia and Overseas,” she said. “I won first prize in the scratchboard category out of about 41 entries, then of the six categories, one winner of each category is chosen as best in show and I also won that.” “I was very excited, I couldn’t believe it.” Her winning piece “Work Mates” depicts a horse and a blue heeler dog together and Ms Go-
renko said it was inspired by her favourite childhood stories. “I grew up reading the silver brumby series; they were my favourite stories as a kid,” she said. “Typically my works take about 150 hours to make, working on it whenever I get a chance; it’s a medium you can sit in front of the TV and do.” “It’s very therapeutic and it helps me to relax and is something you kind of drift off into the zone while doing.” Winning the awards at the art show in Brisbane has given Ms Gorenko international recognition for her work. She said she is always working on something new and is looking forward to having her upcoming work displayed at the AGRA gallery in Camberwell soon.

Windermere’s Trek to End Violence
Champion on a quest for harmony at home By Garry Howe Former Richmond champion and AFL media commentator Matthew Richardson has signed up to walk the Kokoda Track in a quest to help stamp out family violence. And he’s looking for people to join him on the 11-day bucket list challenge which is aimed at raising money and awareness for south-east based child and family service provider Windermere. Richo, as he is affectionately known, has been a Windermere ambassador since his playing days and jumped at the chance to head up the Kokoda challenge. He is confident that former teammates Nathan Brown and Wayne Campbell will join him and a few other former Tigers have also expressed an interest. The Trek to End Violence will take place from 22 October to 1 November next year. Windermere chief executive officer Dr Lynette Buoy said the organisation was thrilled to have its ambassador and “all round nice guy” Matthew Richardson head up the trek. “It won’t be easy but neither are the hardships that face the majority of people we see at Windermere every day,” Dr Buoy said. “Our Kokoda trek to end family violence gives people the chance to do something good for themselves, and for others. “I think it’s the right thing to do - to make a difference to the community.” “At Windermere, it is our mission to build a stronger, connected and more supported community, creating positive change to the lives of those
who need it most, and we’d love for you to help us.” Participants have to cover their travel costs - amounting to $5000 and undertake to raise $3000 for Windermere to help in its battle against family violence, particularly in the south-east. There is also a $770 registration fee. The trek takes eight days and the trip duration is 11 days. The Kokoda Track was the scene of bitter fighting in 1942 as Australian soldiers fought to defend Port Moresby from the advancing Japanese troops. Today, walking the track has become a pilgrimage for many Australians and the battlefield is a lot closer to home - in our neighbourhoods, our streets and in the homes of people we know and love. The trek will help Windermere in its fight against family violence. Along the way, trekkers will honour not only the World War II soldiers who fought on Kokoda, but the many brave people who continue to advocate against family violence and speak out against fear or retribution and alienation from their families, their friends or the community. Sadly, family violence touches one in every two people across the south-east. Alarmingly, half of the people Windermere works with every day are experiencing issues relating from family violence. Richo’s up for the challenge The prospect of walking the iconic Kokoda Track to help in the battle against family violence immediately appealed to former Richmond champion Matthew Richardson. The fact that it also helped Windermere made it a no-brainer. Richo, as he is more widely known, has been a Windermere ambassador since the latter stages of his 282-game playing career with the Tigers. He was approached by then Windermere chairman Carl Strachan and began by spearheading a breakfast in schools program for needy children. “Windermere services a need in the community that does not get the support it should,” he said. “Any domestic situation where mums and bubs are in trouble does tug at the heartstrings. You would hate to see anyone in your family being exposed to that. I had two young nieces at the time, which made it resonate even more. “The work Windermere does really strikes a chord with me.” The challenge of trekking Kokoda also appeals on a personal level. “It is something that has been at the back of my mind for a while,” he said. “It’s certainly on the bucket list and the fact that it’s for Windermere does give you that little kick along.” Richo said that like many past players, he needed to find a bit of motivation to keep up the fitness levels. “I do a bit of exercise these days but I certainly don’t smash myself doing it,” he said. “This is a good way to keep fit and active and help a really good cause at the same time. “I know people who have done Kokoda and enjoyed doing it, but it really is a physical challenge.” He said former Richmond teammates Nathan Brown and Wayne Campbell are all but signed on to the trek and he hoped a few more ex-Tigers would join them on the trip as well.

“Public education in Victoria will see funding growth over next few years of about 6.7 per cent per student whereas is non-government sector growth is at about the 4 per cent mark.” “We can see from that the rate of growth under the needs-based model is stronger into the public education sector, and we are striving to provide equity of treatment across the board.” He also lashed out at the AEU saying it has been running an un-
truthful campaign and engaging in tokenism. “Frankly, the education union should be embarrassed about the campaign they have run,” he said. “Having run around the country for the last six years wearing tokenistic green, ‘I give a Gonski shirts’ to then stand against the legislation and oppose the legislation that David Gonski endorsed is frankly embarrassing.”
Government change on rooming house funding By Victoria Stone-Meadows The State Government has backflipped on funding for the Rooming House Outreach Program after facing opposition from the Tenants Union of Victoria and the Peninsula Community Legal Centre. The PCLC runs the Rooming House Outreach Program in Melbourne’s South East suburbs and helps people in vulnerable living situations across the region. The PCLC lashed out at the government last week following an announcement funding for the program would be rolled into a statewide Tenancy Assistance and Advocacy Program (TAAP). However, this week, the government announced a further $500,000 in funding for the program that will go to the tenants’ union and PCLC. “The government has extended this funding to help tenants in private rooming houses find and sustain long-term housing,” a government spokesperson said. The Tenants’ Union of Victoria
welcomed the announcement of the funding, which will see the program delivered for another two years. “The Victorian Government has done the right thing here,” Tenants’ Union CEO Mark O’Brien said. “This program punches above its weight in terms of housing and other outcomes for individuals and it plays a vital role in identifying and reporting illegal rooming house operators.” Mr O’Brien also said he wanted to see the program expanded in coming budgets, rather than integrated into other initiatives. “This type of program offers our community significant benefits, particularly given the proliferation of private rooming houses, and should be considered for expansion in the next state budget,” he said. “We want to be partners in shutting down the slumlords and turning Victoria’s private rooming house sector into a place where people can find safe, secure and affordable housing.” At most recent counts, the Vic-

Minister for Education Simon Birmingham paid a visit to Hillcrest Christian College on Thursday 29 June to spruik the latest changes to federal school funding. Along with member for La Trobe Jason Wood, Mr Birmingham defended the Gonski 2.0 funding model saying federal education funding would be distributed fairly to Victorian schools. “All schools are set to benefit under our needs-based funding arrangement,” he said. “The Turnbull Government is ensuring all schools are treated fairly, consistently, and equitably whether they are government schools, nongovernment, primary, secondary or integrated; all of them will receive funding according to a fair consistent needs-based formula.” However, the Australian Education Union (AEU) has said the modified school funding model will mean state schools in the area will be worse off. “Instead of delivering a full needs-based funding model, Turnbull’s plan to cut school funding means $13.6 million will be slashed from schools across the La Trobe electorate over the next two years,” AEU Victorian Branch president Meredith Peace said. The AEU has publicly stated they would rather see the current federal education funding model continued into the future.

Mr Morland was the self-declared world president of the Society Of Deserted Spouses (SODS) that convened for a barbecue while their wives were at an Inner Wheel meeting, Mr Moore said. “We’re all lucky for having a friend like Mick Morland in our lives.” Casey Demons Football Club board member Colin Butler outlined Mr Morland’s life-long involvement with football, including a premiership with Beaconsfield in 1974. At Narre Warren Junior Football Club, he was also an administrator of the decade and coach of future AFL stars such as Brendan Fevola, Trent Croad, Chris Newman and Matty Boyd. Mr Butler, when elected to council, appreciated the advice from Mr Morland to understand the issues and vote how his community would want him to vote. “He was an absolutely wonderful man, an icon of City of Casey and a very good friend of mine.” Casey chief executive Mike Tyler told of how Mr Morland was his greatest supporter at the council table, as well as a champion of sports, the environment, transport and waste management. Mr Morland’s OAM for service to local government and the community said it all, Mr Tyler said. South East Metropolitan MP Inga Peulich said Mr Morland always acted for the best of the community, reluctant to “sink the boot” into befriended political rivals. She also read a warm tribute from Opposition Matthew Guy that noted Mr Morland was a loyal person, good bloke and community servant. At the end, Mr Morland’s coffin draped with a Tigers scarf was carried out to the rousing anthem of his beloved Richmond Football Club. He would surely have approved as some in the crowd joined in the song’s refrain: “Yellow and Black”.

The acrobatic performers will perform their latest show as well as conduct public workshops and education performances, as part of the $115,475 grant. Greens MP Nina Springle has slammed the State Government for supporting the greyhound racing industry in Cranbourne. The Upper House Member for the South East Metropolitan Region says the government is knowingly supporting an industry that disregards animal welfare. “The sport kills thousands of dogs every year,” she said. The spray comes after the State Government announced a funding contribution to the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing
Club’s girls’ night out event. The government announced an $8700 contribution to the club on Friday 30 June, to host the event that is promoted as a way to engage more women in sport. Activities included in the girls’ night event at the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club include make-up and hair touch-ups, as well as manicures and massages. Ms Springle labeled the night as “offensive” and said there were more worthy community sporting events in Casey
that were geared towards boosting women’s involvement in sports. “Instead of pumping taxpayer funds into prehistoric concepts like ladies' nights, the government should spend that money phasing out this cruel bloodsport,” she said. “We want to see this money spent upgrading the Casey Fields football ground, which is manifestly inadequate for the women’s AFL matches it hosts. “That’s a much better way to support women’s participation in sport.”

Wings of South-East By Bonny Burrows and Victoria Stone-Meadows An international airport - rivalling Tullamarine in size - at Kooweerup is one step closer to reality, with a multi-national consortium pledging to bankroll the $7 billion project. However, City of Casey have made their position clear that any airport in the South East will not be possible without upgrades to road and rail infrastructure to support it. Paragon Premier Investment Fund will next week present its plans for a South East airport to the State Government after its chairman, Alande Mustafi Safi, last week received a signed letter of intent from an undisclosed financer, promising to fund its development. As revealed by Star News on 22 March, Mr Safi had been engaging with interested parties in Dubai, who had the cash and desire to bring the project to fruition. Gerard Kennedy, a director of Mr Safi’s group, said at the time “these people can certainly afford to do it, they want to do it, and they approached us”. While the identity of the backer has not been disclosed, it is understood the group, based in Europe and the Middle East, has built a number of airports, including two in Europe. As previously reported, a Kooweerup
airport - as featured in the State Government’s 2013 population growth blueprint Plan Melbourne - would service more than five million domestic passenger movements annually and create more than 3000 ongoing jobs, along with an additional 1000-plus during construction. It is also expected to open up international exportation to local businesses, and opportunities for further development and economic investment in the way of supporting infrastructure. Speaking to Star News on Tuesday 4 July, Mr Kennedy said while the funds were there, the project was still subject to government support. The government is yet to back the project, arguing demand for a third airport was “not yet there”. But the Paragon group thinks otherwise and is moving forward with plans. Mr Kennedy and Mr Safi will present the proposal to government next week and a formal legal contract will be drawn up between Paragon and the investors “in the next couple of days”. The businessman stressed it would be a long process before an airport was operational, and even before land was secured. “I will need to talk to the State Government and the group of municipalities behind the south east airport report. I’m sure they’ll have things they’ll want to
put to me about timing, planning and land procurement,” Mr Kennedy said. Landowners would also need to be engaged in the consultation process, which would take some time. “There’s probably going to be some concerned conversations there ... you need to be really considerate of the people you’re approaching and do things with the right attitude,” Mr Kennedy said. Local councils have been advocating for the project for many years, and are excited about the prospect of an international airport at their doorstep. At a council meeting on Tuesday 4 July, Casey Council passed a matter of urgent business supporting the push for the proposed airport along with changes to other transport infrastructure to cater for the increase in travellers. Casey mayor Sam Aziz raised the matter as urgent business and included a recommendation that calls for the State Government to commit to unclogging the roads in the South East and extending the Cranbourne rail line to the airport. The recommendation from Casey also calls on Cardinia Shire and the City of Greater Dandenong to support the proposed airport. “While not located in the City of Casey, we see as ourselves as a regional economy and group and anything that happens in Cardinia will have enormous
benefit to the South East,” Cr Aziz said. “If you look at the South East and the growth trajectories of Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia, there are very significant numbers. “An airport is not a tall ask and not an unfathomable dream but a practical outcome given the growth and economic imperatives of the area. “But, along with that comes great responsibility; it is an apolitical call to create the infrastructure to facilitate the proposed airport.” Casey Council unanimously agreed that the airport required a rail link that also provides train stations to the communities of Cranbourne East, Clyde and Kooweerup. Council will be advocating in the lead-up to the 2018 State election that the $1.4 billion given to the west in roads and transport infrastructure was matched in the South East. “Without delivery the infrastructure, City of Casey and indeed the South East will not cope with the population numbers and living standards will be negatively impacted,” Cr Aziz said. Premier Daniel Andrews said he was yet to see any plans for the project other than what was reported in the media. The government’s priority, he said, was on “upgrading connections to Melbourne Airport”.
New basketball courts - a pride of place By Victoria Stone-Meadows Devon Meadows Primary School has reached a year-long fund-raising goal and has had its ageing outdoor basketball court brought back to life. The parents' association of the school and council brought the community together to help raise muchneeded funds. Acting principal Brendan McDonough said the fund-raising efforts for the new basketball court was a project the whole community worked on. “The parents' association did heaps of fund-raising and it brought our school community together,” he said. The old court had a multitude of issues with the surface, the drainage and everything in between. According to Mr McDonough, the students have a new basketball court they love, and it gives them pride of place for their school. “We have been working on the students' engagement and absenteeism and now they have pride in their school and they want to come to school,” he said. The school officially opened their newly re-surfaced basketball court to the public on Thursday 29 June with a knock-out basketball competition and ribbon cutting ceremony marking the occasion.
In brief Police seeking Ashley McArdle Police are asking the public to keep an eye out for Ashley McArdle, who is known to frequent the Cranbourne and Narre Warren areas. McArdle, 25, is wanted by police on warrants relating to bail, theft, assault and driving offences. He is described as about 165 centimetres tall with a light complexion and a slight build. As well as Cranbourne and Narre Warren, he has previously been sighted in Frankston, Blackburn, and Box Hill. Teens charged with armed robbery Two boys have been charged following an armed robbery of a milk bar in Berwick on the night of Sunday 28 May. Police allege the two 15-yearolds entered the shop on Bemersyde Drive about 7.45pm armed with a hammer and a knife. The boys were able to extort cash from the shop attendant before fleeing the scene on foot. One of the boys was arrested on Hedgeley Drive and another at an undisclosed property in Berwick a short time after the incident. They were both arrested and charged with armed robbery but have been bailed to appear at the children’s court at a later date.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are reminding people to take precautions with their possessions, after a car was stolen from a garage in Berwick late last month. Police believe the garage door of a property on Avebury Drive Berwick was forced open about 11.30pm on 28 June. The thieves were able to steal the silver Mazda 3 from the garage because the car keys were left inside the vehicle. The occupants of the house were home at the time, but did not see the person or people who stole the car. Hoseah’s Boy George duet By Casey Neill Hoseah Partsch has one of the country’s highest selling singles and is going on a national tour with the Culture Club. Not bad for an 18-year-old from Cranbourne West who auditioned for television talent contest The Voice to help his single mum and three siblings. “I’m the happiest person right now," he said. “I’m just a normal kid from Melbourne trying to chase his dream and make a better future for his family.“ The Dandenong High School student finished in second place on The Voice grand finale on Sunday 2 July. “I didn’t see myself coming this far. I’m just going to take it all in," he said. His single Paper Planes is sitting at number three on the iTunes chart, and on Wednesday 5 July Culture Club frontman Boy George announced he would join the band’s Australian tour. It will kick off at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on 30 November. Hoseah chose Boy George as his coach, after all four indicated they wanted him on their team. “I did know of him, I didn’t know any of his music," he admitted. “I did know Karma Chameleon. “I grew up listening to that song but I didn’t know it was Boy George. “On SingStar me and my brother would always karaoke to that song.
“To get mentored by the person that wrote that song, it’s like 'What the hell’s happening?’.“ Boy George said he was “so very proud" of Hoseah. “He’s not only a wonderfully talented artist, he’s a fabulous guy with a big heart and I’m backing him,“ he said. In the finale he joined Hoseah on stage to perform Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World. “We had rehsearsals and just rehearsing with him was giving my goosebumps," Hoseah said. “I’m honestly just truly blessed to have him as my mentor. “I’m never going to forget that performance.“ He thanked the '80s music icon on the show, and Boy George said he wasn’t going anywhere. “I’m part of the family now,” he said. Fellow coach Kelly Rowland, of Destiny’s Child fame, was so impressed by Hoseah’s single she declared that she would buy it. Hoseah also performed John Legend ballad All of Me, playing piano as he sang. He said his family was proud of what he’d achieved. “It just brings light to me that I get to see smiles on their faces,“ he said. “They said I’m a winner in their eyes and their hearts." He’s going to keep working hard and “push to get that house that my mum’s always wanted" and can’t wait to return to his classmates.

Kids’ art from the heart Students from Lyndhurst Secondary College added their artistic flair to Lynbrook Shopping Centre recently. The centre held an art competition open to the school. They received 29 pieces of art from the students which were displayed in the shopping centre foyer. Members of the public were able to view them and vote for their favourite. Marketing manager at Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre Melanie Brown said the project allowed the school and the shopping centre to be more involved in the local community. “The project is all about building links between the school and ourselves and about the centre,” Ms Brown said. “We are conscious of being a community-minded citizen looking after the community where we trade; these are our people after all.” Ms Brown said the art project not only allowed people in the com-
munity to engage with the students’ artwork, but also gave the students a chance to be proud of their community involvement. “Most of our locals would have kids who are quite young, so we wanted to engage with the secondary college now and moving down the track,” she said. “We want to be friends with them and engage these high school students.” The theme for the art project given to the students was ‘culture, peace, and the environment’ and students were free to interpret that any way they wished. The top three pieces each received an award from the shopping centre, with a people’s choice award also being honoured at a special lunch for the students at Suburban Burger in Lynbrook. The winning art piece was painted by student Alex and titled ‘My individuality seeking peace through my internal and external environment.’ For his prize, Alex won a $300 gift card for the shopping centre and his work will be used on the centre’s

A cuppa with best friends By Victoria Stone-Meadows A new community connectedness project has launched in Cranbourne with the introduction of the Cranbourne Women’s Friendship Cafe. The cafe invited women of all ages, backgrounds, languages and education levels to come together and empower one another. The newest cafe is one of nine in the South East region that allows women who may have previously been isolated through various life circumstances to come together and reconnect with their communities. The cafe has been set up by Biftu Hawas who was once a refugee herself and wanted to give something back to the community that had given her an opportunity to thrive. “I was given a chance to some to Australia and the opportunity to graduate high school and then further my education in community development,” she said. “I was working in Moonee Valley as a youth worker when I started having family and I had to put my job aside for family commitments.” Ms Hawas was a stay-at-home mum for about six years and found once she was ready to return to work, she had become disconnected from her community and workplace. “It was very tough; there is no space for a woman in work, plus having my background as a refugee made things very difficult,” she said. It was through volunteer work with the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition (VIRWC) that she found out about the women’s friendship cafe. “After volunteering with them in
Biftu Hawas and the group from the Cranbourne Women's Friendship Cafe. 169466 Hampton Park for about five months and the program was finished and successful, I was given an opportunity again to work to set up on in Cranbourne.” The Cranbourne Women’s Friendship Cafe has been operational for about three weeks and has women from all over participating and making connections. Ms Hawas said the goal of the cafe
was to allow women from all different backgrounds a chance to share knowledge, skills and empower one another in a friendly and welcoming environment. “When you empower women it increases the social wellbeing for women and from there the wellbeing of kids and families and the whole community,” she said. The cafe has also attracted the at-

tention of Nicole Sekic from Narre Warren who is studying a bachelor of health science at Deakin University. “Cranbourne is such a multicultural and diverse community so this cafe is not just directed at the refugee community but is for everyone,” she said. “I have learned a lot from Biftu’s story; about where she has come from and how she wants to give back to the community.”
“It’s a huge thing to work alongside her and learn so much about how disconnected a migrant and refugee population is.” The Cranbourne Women’s Friendship Cafe meets once a week on Wednesdays (expect school holidays) from 10am to noon at the St John’s Church on Childers Road. Tax time is coming and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) wants people involved in ridesourcing to make sure they understand their tax obligations. Assistant Commissioner Tom Wheeler said that drivers in the sharing economy should be aware that anything they earn is assessable income that needs to be included in their tax return. “It pays to know what your tax obligations are as a driver, so you can report and fulfil them correctly from the start,” he said. “The ATO collects more than 650 million pieces of data each year and has recently started receiving information directly from ride-sourcing facilitators to better support drivers

GUIDE MAT SUCKLING DIRECTOR OF RMS HOMES The end of financial year is upon us. That means H&R Block ads on the TV and plenty of stock take and stock reduction sales at our favourite shops. But it also brings with it some changes to legislation which will affect the housing market. If you can remember the very first home buyers guide, it was in response to the State Government introducing stamp duty exemptions for first home buyers for property purchasers of up to $600,000. As of 1 July, that exemption commences for first home buyers entering land contracts and other contracts of sale for established properties. I made the claim that this reactionary measure would not do as much as the State Government would hope for first home buyers. I believed and still believe that land developers will utilise the savings in stamp duty to effectively raise their prices. This was and still is a ‘Captain Obvious’ prediction. Anyone who has bought or is seeking to buy land knows; regardless of a stamp duty reduction land prices are continuing to rise. I am no genius for pointing to that fact. The fundamental problem hasn’t been solved - the supply and quality of land available has not changed - it has gotten worse.

The last three to four years have seen a phenomenon in housing that previous generations did not experience; the price of land outstripping the cost of construction in the outer suburbs. It is that simple. As for my advice and guidance; those self-employed looking to buy a home - Be organised! Don’t procrastinate getting your taxes done - get yourself together and lodge your returns within days of July commencing. Heed this advice now - you will thank me later!

Kids get their Fast track to Grand Prix own cinema Kids now have their own cinema at Fountain Gate with the opening of Vjunior. Nine Network presenter Lauren Phillips, in her role as ambassador of Vjunior, officially opened the new cinema on Thursday 29 June. General Manager of Sales and Marketing Mohit Bhargava said: “We have been overwhelmed by the success of Vjunior and are truly looking forward to extending this offering across more locations. “We are equally thrilled to have Lauren on board. With her extensive experience in and passion for the children’s entertainment space, Lauren is the ideal ambassador for Vjunior.” The new Vjunior is designed by kids, for kids. The in-cinema experience includes an indoor slide, which is a popular attraction at Vjunior Southland, along with a range of seating options available, from custom-fit bean bag seats and lounges for kids, while parents can relax in more traditional cinema seating. The cinema maintains the child friendly environment with modified volumes and lighting levels, a shorter pre-show and

Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is a destination for the whole family with many hours of entertainment and enjoyment on offer over the school holidays. They’re a force for good By Victoria Stone-Meadows A Cranbourne based not-for-profit is helping students in the region reach their full potential through grants, support and initiatives. The Assisting Casey Education (ACE) Foundation is led by a group of community stalwarts who want to see the next generation of students in Casey achieve their very best. The foundation supports local students through bursaries and programs that aim to give those students at a disadvantage a helping hand. Chair of the board of the foundation, Dr Leon Shapero has a 30-year history of working closely with education providers in the Casey region. “I wanted to expand the reach of assistance I could provide to students in the region, so started the foundation three years ago,” he said. “The vision of the foundation is to assist children in Grades six to 12 overcome hurdles in their educational pursuits.” Through fund-raising drives such as an annual dinner, the foundation is able to provide financial assistance to students facing adversity who are enrolled in state schools in Casey. Dr Shapero said the foundation provided $500 every year to each public secondary and primary school in the municipality for students that needed a helping hand. “The schools then select five students who are deserving of a reward and encouragement for their hard work and diligence,” he said. “These bursaries are not for the best and brightest but for kids who have shown an aptitude and sense of hard work to overcome hurdles such as cultural and language challenges, family fracture, social problems; really any kids working against hardship.”
The ACE foundation also supports a number of external programs that help students in Casey achieve their best at school. “We take a day off each month to deliver 2500 meal replacement drinks to the high schools because lots of kids go to school with no breakfast or lunch with them,” Dr Shapero said. “We provide free supervised tuition on three nights a week, we financially support the young mothers return to school program at Cranbourne Secondary. “We also support operation Newstart which is a program to engage disengaged students in middle high school.” The most recent project the ACE Foundation has embarked on is providing eye checks and glasses to children in primary schools. Dr Shapero said he was very proud of this new program and as a glasses wearer he understands how expensive eye care could be. “We pay for everything; it’s the project we are most excited about right now,” he said. The foundation has organised with teachers and parents for optometrists to visit primary schools in the area to provide free eye testing to students and glasses for those that need them. “The optometrists test six and seven-year-old students and we provide kids who need them with glasses for free so parents don’t have to pay,” he said. “We have most recently rolled this program out at two schools and we are in the process of getting the third and fourth schools’ permission.” While the board of the foundation is made up of community leaders including business, school and local government representatives, Dr Shapero said

The battle of Troy By David Nagel Troy Tharle the footballer is very much like Troy Tharle the man - honest to the point where his integrity could never be questioned. The affable big-man celebrated his 200th game for his beloved Cranbourne Football Club against Berwick on Saturday. The result didn’t go well, but building resilience against the highs and lows of football - and life itself - is something that ‘Moz’ has become very much accustomed to. His story - which includes an unsettled upbringing and battles with depression, is one the 29-year-old dual premiership player is brutally honest and open about. “I was brought up by my mum, I didn’t have a fatherly figure as such, and we just sort of followed my uncles around back then,” Tharle said of his childhood. “We ended up in Cranbourne. I started kicking the footy around by myself pretending I was a Richmond player and started at Cranbourne in the Under 11s. We had some great teams back then, we lost four games in six years I think, we won five flags, but I spent a lot of time on the bench until I had a growth spurt when I was about 14 or 15.” That growth spurt coincided with Tharle being coached by the man he rates as the biggest influence on his career - his Under 14 coach, Glenn Weir. He rapidly improved to the point where he played full-back in the Under 16 interleague team. “Whenever I see Glenn at the footy I still call him ‘coach’, if it wasn’t for him and the opportunities he gave me I wouldn’t have kept on playing footy I don’t think,” Tharle explained. Tharle made the move to the Cranbourne senior club and played his first senior game under Darren Martello against Hampton Park. The Eagles copped some horrible beltings at the time, but a game against perennial powerhouse Doveton flicked the switch for an up-and-coming group that would go on to finish top-three for the next eight years and play in six consecutive grand finals. It’s a run that still continues today. “Obviously the two premierships (2011 and 2016) are the standouts, but we beat Doveton early in 2008 and I reckon that was the best win I’ve been a part of,” he said. “We’d been getting belted by 200 points when we started, but that win

It’s been a hell of a journey, playing finals, getting injured, the highs and lows of football and I’ve just tried to enjoy it all the way.” But enjoyment became difficult when things went horribly wrong for a then 24-year-old in early 2013. The emerging key-position player shattered his nose and required plastic surgery after running into an umpire in Round 3 against Keysborough and then, in just his second game back, shattered his eye socket and cheekbone and spent eight weeks on the sidelines. Those injuries had a massive impact, both physically and mentally. “I’ll be honest with you, I had some mental issues around that time, I was on anti-depressants and I did want to give footy away,” Tharle said. “It was a hard decision to come back, but I missed the club, I wanted to play in more flags but I just needed to
change the way I played. But I’ve got no regrets; I definitely made the right decision to play on.” The club means everything to Tharle. “Every single player and supporter is just like a big family to me,” he said. “It’s sort of hard for me to talk about. The ups and downs, I’ve laughed and cried at this club, but it’s always been the best feeling to walk in the doors at Cranbourne, the people are great and the club means everything to me.” And he’s been blessed to share the changerooms with some great players, including champion full forward Marc Holt. “Holty, he’s an unbelievable player,” he said. “I’ve spoken to some coaches who wanted to coach Cranbourne just because of him and he draws a big crowd and loves performing in front of them. Tharle moves the ball forward against Berwick at Casey Fields. radar in the ruck and Justin Berry used to do things that would just make you laugh ... he was incredible.” Tharle said winning the 2016 grand final, after losing the previous four, was a special moment to treasure. “Winning that first premiership was great but when Cheekers (Ryan Davey) kicked that goal in the last quarter last year and we knew we had it won, just looking around the ground and seeing the enjoyment on the faces of your mates, that’s a feeling that’s really hard to explain,” he said. And taking a fresh approach to his football, with the help of his partner Sarah, has seen him play the most consistent football of his career this year. “I used to superstitious about everything, what jocks I would wear, all my pre-game rituals, but this year I’ve just relaxed a bit more and taken a different approach,” he said. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but I probably haven’t taken it as seriously this year and it’s really helped with my
consistency.” Tharle said he still has plenty to play for and wanted to thank some special people for helping him through his football - and life - journey. “I’d love more team success but personally I’d love to play 300 games for the club,” he said. “Not many people have done that at Cranbourne and to join that elite group would be pretty special. There’s still a long way to go but with a bit of luck I’ll get there. “My mum Kerry, she’s been fantastic all the way through and I want to thank Doug Koop for teaching me about football, for bringing me back to Earth and teaching me the basics and how to play to a game plan. And (president) Shane Baker, he’s a tireless worker who is always at the club and doing the work behind the scenes that lets us do what we love doing. “It’s a great club and I’m lucky to be a part of it.”
Slocombe joins DDCA committee, replacing Dee Field By Nick Creely Current Springvale South captain and legendary cricketer Craig Slocombe has joined the Executive Committee of the Dandenong District Cricket Assocation (DDCA) after the sudden resignation of Dee Field as the Junior Vice-President. Dee has been on the DDCA Execu-
tive Committee for four years - with her last two years as Junior Vice-President, but has had to give up the role due to family reasons. Joe Aszodi will be elevated from his executive title and will fill the spot left by Dee as Junior Vice-President of the association. Slocombe is set to add some essen-
tial cricket knowledge and fresh ideas to the DDCA executive as a current star player of the competition, and arguably the finest cricketer produced in the competition’s history. He has previously filled the role of the Under 21 coach and has been a DDCA selector for a number of years in representative matches, in which the association has enjoyed plenty of success.
Slocombe only recently signed on again with the Bloods for the 2017/18 season, along with former Cranbourne star Steven Spoljaric. DDCA president Michael Hawking will once again lead the competition in 2017/18, Hilary Wijeratne has been nominated once again as Vice-President (Seniors), Neil Evans will occupy the role of Treasurer, while Ray Nicholls
will hold his place as DDCA Secretary. The DDCA Executive Committee for 2017/18 will be: Craig Slocombe, Peter Barnes, Lance Draper, Neil Shaw and John Brooks. Brooks is the only new member of the committee. Robert Williams will also take on the role as Umpires’ Representative for the DDCA.

VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 11 Casey’s five game winning streak has officially come to an end after a crushing 65-point loss to powerhouse Port Melbourne on Saturday afternoon. Looking to make it six in a row against the very side that kick-started their thrilling run just over a month ago, a fierce Borough’s side turned up to North Port Oval. It was a scrappy opening term, with both teams looking to impose their presence, but it was Port who finally broke away in the middle parts of the quarter to kick four unanswered goals against the breeze, before Noble Park’s very own Ben Giobbi - on debut - dobbed his first VFL goal on the quarter time siren. Giobbi was impressive on debut and among the best, using his trusty left-foot to set his team-mates up on a regular basis, and looks a long term prospect down at Casey Fields. But it was just a flittering bright moment in a bitterly disappointing day, with the Borough’s suffocating the Demons with incredible tackling intensity. Port ended the day with over 130 tackles, further highlighting their incredible ability to place immense pressure on the Dees. Double joy for Cavaliers By Nick Creely BIG V BASKETBALL REVIEW ROUND 14 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN In one of the most important weekends in the context of the season, the Casey Cavaliers rose to the occasion, defeating Diamond Valley and Werribee in successive days. In a tough and gritty affair with Diamond Valley on Saturday, the Cavs broke away briefly in the second quarter to gain a vital lead, and eventually held on 84-79. All five started reached double figures for the Cavs, with Brandon Polk (18 points, 12 rebounds) once again the star of the show. Heading off on the road to play Werribee the following day, the Cavs once again stood up - winning 79-75. After both sides held firm in a tight first three quarters, the Cavs stormed home with a dominant 22-12 final quarter. The pair of wins sees the Cavs in fifth place with four rounds to go, and now face McKinnon on Sunday at 3pm. DIVISION ONE WOMEN The Cavs are barely hanging on in 2017 after a tough weekend of losses to Werribee and Camberwell respectively. They are just one game now off the bottom with four rounds to go. Saturday saw the Cavs travel to Werribee and lose 82-77, in what was a promising performance.
The Devils got out to a healthy 14-point lead early before the Cavs roared back to draw level at half time. But a masterclass by Rohanee Cox (25 points) saw the Devils edge the Cavs in a dominant final term. Sunday saw the Cavs completely dismantled by Camberwell 86-69, in a game that took away from the hard work the previous day. The Dragons built steadily throughout the game and ran away in the final quarter. Rebecca Borham (15 points, five rebounds) lead the way for the Cavs, but there were few winners from the disappointing performance. The Cavs play bottom side Western Port Steelers in a game that could decide the wooden spoon and subsequent relegation. YOUTH LEAGUE TWO MEN In a cracking top two clash with the Pakenham Warriors, the Cavs fell just short 71-75 at Casey Indoor on Saturday night. Both teams started the clash evenly, and it looked like the Cavs might pip the top placed Warriors when they surged to a lead at half time. But the Warriors fought back admirably, and eventually found a way to win with only seconds left on the clock. Hunter Marks (22 points, 11 rebounds) stood up for the Cavs, with Jordan Gooiker (17 points) also on song. But luckily, the Cavs had the opportunity to bounce back the
next day, knocking off Mornington 78-71 at Mornington Basketball Stadium. The Cavs had control of the majority of the match, holding on to an early 27-16 jump to hold off the Breakers. Jordan Gooiker was again in strong touch, adding 21 points to the board. The Cavs are second on the table, and still within touching distance of the Pakenham Warriors at the top. YOUTH LEAGUE TWO WOMEN Despite a mixed weekend of results, the Cavs surged into third spot, displacing the Pakenham Warriors. The Cavs traveled to Knox Basketball Stadium on Saturday evening to face Blackburn - who are second on the ladder - and fell 65-53. After a stunning start to the game for the Vikings, the Cavs fought back to comfortably win the second half, but the damage was already done. Looking to bounce back from the disappointment, the Cavs hosted Mornington, comfortably winning 68-59 at Casey Indoor on Sunday. A strong 29-16 first half saw the Cavs gain a vital lead despite a fightback from the Breakers. Jessica McConchie (15 points) stood up under pressure, while Cristy Daly (13 points, five rebounds, four assists) played a strong all round game. The Cavs host Southern Peninsula Sharks on Sunday afternoon at Casey Indoor.
Not much luck has been associated with Cranbourne in 2017 - and it continued on Saturday with a heavy 79-point loss to the red hot VU Western Spurs. As a result, the Eagles sit third last with a 2-5 record, and face a tricky battle to remain relevant in this year’s premiership race. The Spurs showed no mercy to the undermanned Eagles, kicking away to a 41-point quarter time lead, and eventually left the Eagles goalless in the first half while piling on three goals in the second term. Hayley Wildes finally hit the scoreboard in the third quarter, but the game was iced as the Spurs kicked on once again with a five goal second half. “We had 11 out - with what we had we battled hard all day and did the best we could they’re a first class side,” Eagles coach Sein Clearihan said. “When you take quality players out of the side you’re always going to struggle - but the kids I brought up they battled all day and couldn’t do any more than that. “To the girls’ credit - they had a real crack and that’s all you can ask for - the scoreboard probably dosen’t reflect that, but we were proud of their efforts.” Clearihan said that the Spurs are a team of genuine quality, and taught his side a lot about ball movement and work ethic. “They moved the ball really quickly - at some stages we were up for it, and at others stages they completely de-

Tigers v Demons showdown at Beacy By Russell Bennett Richmond’s VFL side will be out to atone for its five-point loss last time it took to Holm Park Reserve when it goes head-to-head with the Casey Demons at the Beaconsfield ground this Saturday. The Tigers and Demons currently sit fifth and seventh on the ladder respectively ahead of the Round 12 showdown and Richmond coach, and threetime Brisbane Lions premiership winner, Craig McRae said it was a game his side was eagerly anticipating. He highlighted Beaconsfield product Jake Aarts - who played his 50th VFL game in Round 19 last year - as one to watch on Saturday, adding: “He finished off last season really well - putting on a heap of pressure in the forward line and just playing his role and committing to the team. “He’s got great character and he trains really hard, so (he’s got) all the elements of a guy who deserves his spot in our team and we really value him.” Another player McRae highlighted as one to watch is the former Fremantle-listed Jacob Ballard, who he said is one of the best midfielders in the VFL. “They started the year reasonably slowly but they’ve had quite a few injuries at AFL level which probably contributed to that, but they’ve just got their game going again and they’re getting players back. “They recently beat Box Hill who were undefeated ... so they’ll be hard to beat.” But McRae and his men can’t wait for the challenge. “We had a taste of playing there (at Beaconsfield) three or four weeks ago against Werribee and we didn’t play our best footy, so this game is going to be a really big one in terms of the end of the season and the calculations of what that means for the finals for us,” he said.

Wickers of worth By David Nagel The glorious uncertainty of sport would appear to be the only thing standing between Berwick and this year’s premiership after the Wickers toyed with Cranbourne at Casey Fields on Saturday. The battle between the top two teams in the South East Football Netball League was expected to be close, but a passionate desire to apply pressure saw the unbeaten Wickers take control of proceedings from the opening bounce. Boy ... were they impressive. And they beat the Eagles at their own game - that dour defence complementing the most attacking instincts in SEFNL. And it’s happened twice this year now, the Wickers holding the Eagles to just 18 scoring shots in seven quarters of football ... the Wickers creating 48 of their own. “Last year we were elite at creating scoring opportunities but the boys have worked really hard on developing that hard edge as a defensive unit,” said first-year Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman. “Our assistant-coaches have been terrific with that, not just with explaining the method but the ‘why’ behind it and the players have really taken it on board.” Berwick enjoyed pushing the Eagles onto the back foot on Saturday, step by tentative step, forcing turnovers and blocking every possible exit from the back half. They had 11 repeat entries alone in the third quarter with the game played almost exclusively in the Eagles back line. “We’re very proud of that and the fruits of our labour are starting to show,” Kemperman said. “It was a little bit clunky when we started out, but it’s got smoother over time and that just comes through familiarity with the process and each other.” Berwick kicked 3.2 to 0.0 in the opening term and withstood a strong Eagles’ challenge in the second quarter to run away with the contest after half time. They kicked 5.8 to 1.2 in the third term - clearly their most dominant period of the match. Brody Connelly kicked three for the winners, his afternoon highlighted by a spectacular grab in the second quarter. Riley Heddles, Luke Sheppard and Michael Riseley were superb in defence, while Jimmy Harrison, Tom Brennan and Reece Piper gave magnificent service through the midfield. Second draw as good as a win - just ask Berwick By David Nagel The outcome may have been the same but Berwick has taken a far more positive outlook from its latest draw, a thrilling 47-47 finish against Cranbourne at Casey Fields on Saturday. The Wickers, who finished level with Hampton Park last week after squandering a nine-goal three-quarter-time lead, matched motors with one of the in-form teams in the competition, the Eagles coming off a huge win against top-team Tooradin last week. And this draw - well it tasted a whole lot better than the first. “Absolutely, last week against Hampton Park was heartbreaking, it felt like a loss, where this week we fought the game out, the girls dug deep for the blue dress,” said proud coach Janine Kilmartin. “It’s such a strong competition and every week is a challenge, but our girls keep building, doing the one percenters well and focusing on what makes us a good netball team.” Neither side conceded an inch, with Mel Perrins and Olivia Macente having a great duel in the centre for four quarters while many other battles took place. Berwick youngster Abuk Kenyang (goal shooter) made a big difference when she came on at quarter time, testing the skills of a seasoned defender in Tara Cecil (goal keeper). Emily Pratt (wing attack) played a great game for the Wickers, while Nat Sparks (WA) fought for a similar outcome for the Eagles. But in the end - they couldn’t be split. With Britt Tyers out with an ankle, O’Shanassy saw an opportunity for defender Charlotte Petelinek to make her debut, while regular stars like Dani Cameron (GK), Ash Gill (WA) and Jasmine Jones (WA-centre) went about their work in efficient fashion. A brilliant defensive effort has seen Narre Warren secure a 58-31 victory over ROC at Kalora Park. The Magpies were at their ruthless best in the first half, with Tracey Dell (GK) and Corrina Emery (goal defence) relying on some great support from the midcourt to hold the Kangaroos to just 11 goals. ROC has now lost seven games straight after defeating Pakenham in round three and face some tough games against Cranbourne and Tooradin over the coming weeks. And a brilliant second quarter performance has seen Doveton shake off a determined Pakenham in a 60-41 victory at Robinson Oval. Rahni Samason (goal shooter) and Shae Gee (goal attack) combined well for the winners who had Chelsea Imanisani (C) provide plenty of impetus through the midcourt. The Lions are showing glimpses of improvement but just can’t maintain their effort for four quarters. Keely Wright (GD) and Amelia McCarthy (GD) gave Kate McGowan (GK) a helping hand in defence.
