don’t think you quite understand; you wake up every day and do your job but to us you are so important.’” Mr Amos said in all his years delivering the mail to all kinds of people, Tre stood out as a person and he looked forward to seeing him. “Four days out of five they are home and I ride safely into the court,” he said. “I turn the corner and I hope he’s there today to have a chat and a high-five, give him the mail and he runs off to mum.” Mr Amos said as much as he had helped Tre, Tre had helped him as well. Mr Amos has been working as a postal delivery rider for 20 years and through his kind nature and friendly demeanour has helped Tre overcome his fear of motorbikes. He says it all started in about September 2016 when he would bring the mail for Ms Bond up to the house as there was a little boy looking at him through the security door. “Every day on my round this little boy would be there and he would start talking to me through the front door,” he said. “In the end we’ve got him to come down to the letterbox and now he waits for me

A young boy in Cranbourne has found an unlikely source of comfort in dealing with his fear of motorbikes. Three-year-old Tre Stubbs was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder when he was two years old, after his mother Rachel Bond sought medical opinions from two paediatricians. Because of his disorder, Tre has a terrible fear of things he doesn’t understand; especially if they are loud and cause him to experience a sensory overload. Tre would experience this terrible overstimulation that manifests as crying, hyperventilating, anger and fear up to 13 times a day. Ms Bond said her son wouldn’t be able to join in activities with other children or enjoy just being a kid because of the severity of his meltdowns. “We have to watch him all the time in case he becomes distressed,” she said. “He comes running to the door like a hurricane and I have to calm him using techniques Yooralla taught me like deep compression massages, sign language and other simple things.” “It’s awful; he can’t communicate with us when he is like that.” One of Tre’s triggers was motorbikes. He has never experienced any trauma relating to a motorbike, but their loud noises and fast movement used to cause him a lot of anguish. “When we moved in here there were four motorbikes in the court,” Ms Bond said. “He used to just freak out and as soon as they started he would be screaming and carrying on and it could take 10 or 20 minutes to calm him down.” However, Ms Bond and her 10-year-old daughter Riah have found relief and help for Tre in the form of veteran postie Darren Amos.

Mick Morland was the life of the party. time and effort,” he said. And that’s what he had been doing since he took on the presidency of a kindergarten in Narre Warren 30 years ago. A passionate Tigers supporter, he was an Upper Beaconsfield premiership player and reserves coach, president of Narre Warren Junior Football Club and one of its coaches of the decade. Rotary Club of Berwick President Mark Caulfield remembers his friend and fellow Rotarian as a generous man who gave his community his all. A “reliable and hard-working” member of Rotary for 23 years, Mr Morland knew how to crack a joke, but was also known for his strong work ethic and tireless efforts in helping grow the ageing club. He served on many Rotary committees, including a stint as president from 2012-’13 He helped enter partnerships with Casey to provide picnic tables and the Rotary Rotunda in Pioneer Park, a rotunda in Buchanan Park and ongoing work with the Casey North Community Information and Support Service, the Australia Day festivities at Pioneer Park and the Carols by Candlelight celebrations in Berwick. In 2009, Mr Morland was officially recognised for his Rotary commitments with the prestigious Paul Harris. “He welcomed all new comers to the club and upheld the ideals of Rotary to do good in the world,” Mr Caulfield said. There was also Mr Morland’s renowned “wicked sense of humour”. Casey councillor Milla Gilic recalled this piece of golden advice from Mr Morland just after winning her seat on the council. “See this Deputy Mayor medallion, they don’t tell ya, but just in case of emergency crisis, it’s actually gold foil wrapped chocolate!” It would have only been dispensed days after Mr Morland had lost his own seat in November’s council elections. Councillor Susan Serey said her former Edrington Ward colleague would often joke that
Kay and Mick Morland. “Susan’s the beauty and the brains, so give her all the work and I’ll just take the credit”. He had an endearing way of being - a relaxed, self-depracating Aussie style, a love of fun and a good laugh, Cr Serey said. “That was Mick’s way of making everyone feel that they belonged and were a part of our community.” Casey councillor Wayne Smith, who served alongside Mr Morland from the first term of Casey Council, marvelled at his work ethic. While serving as a councillor, Mr Morland was running a cleaning business. He would wake at 3am to drive back into town from weekend council conferences to do a cleaning shift. “As mayor, he was probably the hardest working mayor we’ve had. He turned up to every-

Mourners will be making a fitting tribute to longserving Berwick and Casey councillor Mick Morland, so highly regarded for his unstinting community service. Since his sudden death, mourners have been requested to donate to the philanthropic Casey Cardinia Foundation in lieu of flowers. Floral tributes had been flooding in to the Morland family home after Mr Morland was fatally struck by a car on the Princes Highway, near Wilson Botanic Park, while he was out walking on 24 June. His wife Kay Morland contacted Casey Cardinia Foundation executive officer Therese Howell and asked if the foundation would accept donations from mourners in lieu of flowers. “Kay expressed that she felt it appropriate for any donations to benefit the community that Mick loved so dearly, through the Casey Cardinia Foundation,” Ms Howell said. An array of community groups - football clubs and leagues, SES, Guides, Scouts, Rotary, Neighbourhood Watch, environment and church groups - have expressed their grief and shock about the horrifying news. All spoke warmly of the husband, father and grandfather and his support for their causes. Among his pet campaigns were a library in Hampton Park, a new track for Casey Little Athletics, an aquatic centre in Narre Warren and the Bunjil Place complex. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz paid tribute to the “decades of dedication” from the seven-term councillor. “He was easy to work with, he had his heart in the right place and he was compassionate - these are rare qualities these days, unfortunately. “I’ve lost a dear friend, the community has lost a statesman.” Cr Aziz lamented how Mr Morland could have lost his life during such a “benign, pleasant activity” as taking his routine evening walk to manage his type two diabetes. Casey Council - which has lowered its flags to half-mast - will decide on a lasting tribute with Mr Morland’s family, Cr Aziz said. “He was devoted to his wife, Kay, his children and his grandchildren, and our thoughts are with them as they grieve.” Mr Morland is the second longest-serving Casey councillor, behind Wayne Smith, and stood as a Liberal candidate for State Parliament. Mayors Jim Memeti of Greater Dandenong and Brett Owen of Cardinia, Victoria Police and a raft of politicians from several allegiances have paid tribute. State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy described the Liberal life-member as “an institution in Casey, a great bloke with a heart of gold”. Gembrook MP Brad Battin said he would be remembered for the many things he delivered for the community he loved for decades. “All of the City of Casey will miss the man with that moustache,” he said. “Thanks Mick, you will be missed.” When he received an Order of Australia Medal in January last year, he told Star News that all his years of service had made him realise how many people did not put their hands up to help the community. “I always believed that if you want to be involved in your community you have to put in the

Big crowd did it for Emily By Victoria Stone-Meadows A young Cranbourne girl will receive much-needed physical therapy after the community came together to give generously to the family and enjoy a day out. Emily’s strive for life family fun day was held on Sunday 25 June and over 600 people turned out to support the young girl’s family and their fight to access TheroSuit therapy for their four-year-old. Emily’s mother Tanya DeWeldon said the day was a huge success and Emily had a great day despite this being the first time she had organised an event of this size. “I had no idea what I was doing,” she said. “But with thanks to Aaron Grant and Judy Davis from the Cranbourne Public Hall Committee as back-up, they were really helpful and the day was amazing.” Ms DeWeldon said she had so many people she needed to thank, whohelped raise the money and help
bring the family fun day together. “I especially want to thank the Lions club, the Scouts from Cranbourne and Narre Warren, Peter Grant, Melbourne Transformers and Exotic limos, all the cosplayers, Nintense Gaming, ventriloquist Lindi Jane, Bubble Soccer 2U, Animals 2U, Slushed Out, Ashley from Digilink, Long Le at Raine and Horne, Casey Radio and Amanda Stapledon, Notti Michelin tyres and Bob Jane Oakleigh,” she said. The day ended up attracting more people than Ms DeWeldon expected it to, but said Emily had the time of her life. “It was bigger than I ever expected,” she said. “Emily spent the whole day pointing to herself and saying it was her day; she knew exactly what was happening and she absolutely loved it.” Thanks to the generosity of Cranbourne businesses and locals, Emily will be able to start her therapy in November this year.

Golf course future could be above par The Amstel Golf Club has won support from the City of Casey to get the Ranfurlie Golf Course included in the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB). The inclusion of the course in the UGB would open the way for future development of the site for housing or other urban growth purposes. Currently, the golf course site is scheduled as inside a green wedge zone which makes any future subdividing and selling of the course difficult despite the surrounding land being part of the UGB. The Amstel Golf Club has been working to have the course included in the UGB since the State Govern-
ment’s Plan Melbourne documents were updated in 2012. At a council meeting on Tuesday 20 June, council passed a vote to support the inclusion of the golf course in the UGB. Council’s manager City Planning Nicola Ward said the inclusion of the golf course site in the UGB would allow council to plan for new projects to benefit the growing community of the Cranbourne area. “The exclusion of this site from the UGB constitutes an anomaly with land surrounding it designated for urban purposes,” she said. “Its inclusion would provide an opportunity for the land to be redeveloped for urban purposes.” “Should the site be included
in the UGB, there are a number of considerations that would need to be sufficiently addressed, including the provision of additional infrastructure to support this new resident population.” However, general manager of the Amstel Golf Club Peter Butler said the Ranfurlie Golf Course wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon. “The club has no intention to sell Ranfurlie and what we are doing here is planning for the future,” he said. “We currently have housing down one side and the dual carriage way Bullarto Road on the other and by being included in the UGB, in 10 or 15 years when urban growth gets very close to the course, the board then might want to sell.”
“We are only about planning for future and laying the foundations for moves a future board of directors may want to make.” In a letter to council from March this year, Mr Butler urged council to support the inclusion of Ranfurlie in the UGB. Mr Butler outlined in his letter than any profits the club made from the sale of the land occupied by the Ranfurlie Golf Course would be used to establish a new golf course near the current site. The Amstel Golf Club will make a submission to the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) to include the Ranfurlie Golf Course site in the UGB, and the VPA will consider if the submission has merit.
Bridge over troubled crossing next With the completion of the Thompsons Road intersection and the connecting Merinda Park Boulevard, BMD constructions are free to move onto constructing a bridge over the rail line. Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan and Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley on Monday 26 June visited the site of the new intersection that will improve access to the Merinda Park train station car park. The six-lane bridge is expected to tie into later stages of the project. Mr Donnellan described the bridge as the “centrepiece” of the $175 million Thompsons Road Upgrade that will remove the dangerous level crossing to the south of the train station. “Removing the dangerous and congested level crossing on Thompsons Road will make it safer and easier for people to access the Merinda Park station,” he said.
The new intersection has traffic lights installed at a brand new access road to the car park that will allow motorists to enter and exit the car park safely. The new access road, named Merinda Park Boulevard, will connect the existing car park access from Boland Drive to Thompsons Road. The remaining stages of the upgrades to Thompsons Road will include widening of the road between Dandenong-Frankston Road to Marriott Boulevard and from the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road to Berwick-Cranbourne Road. Ms Graley said the increased lanes and traffic flow would greatly benefit the residents of Cranbourne and surrounding areas. “We are getting on with upgrading this busy road to improve traffic flow and make it easier for drivers in Melbourne’s south east to get to where they want to be,” she said.

‘Goldilocks’ bandit was right at home By Victoria Stone-Meadows A 28-year-old Narre Warren man faced the Dandenong Magistrates Court on Monday 26 June after he was arrested for a 'Goldilocks' style burglary in Cranbourne North. Police believe the man broke into a house on Hassett Lane on Wednesday 21 June, where he spent about five hours inside the property. It is understood that while inside the house, the man helped himself to a bath, a shave, brushed his teeth, cooked noodles, had a go on the PlayStation and also performed a lewd act. Before leaving the scene where he had made himself at home, the man proceeded to steal a number of small electrical items from the house. He was arrested on Monday 26 June after members of the Casey Crime Investigation Unit released CCTV footage from the house. The man is expected to face burglary and theft related offences.

“Even the sound of a bike on the main road, something that would have terrified him a few months ago, is not an issue anymore because he associates the sound with Darren.” Ms Bond even took the time to write a letter to Mr Amos’s boss to let him know what a great impact he has had on their lives. However, Mr Amos remained humble about his role in helping Tre.

Newspaper dumping Opinion A Narre Warren woman is expected to be charged on summons over the alleged dumping of large amounts of newspapers in the south-east. The bundles were allegedly dumped in suburbs including Beaconsfield Upper, Narre Warren North, Pakenham Upper and Cockatoo, between 16 and 24 June. The 54-year-old was arrested, interviewed and released by Emerald police on 26 June. She is expected to be charged on summons with obtaining financial advantage by deception and three counts of aggravated littering.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School has marked the official opening of their brand-new pirate ship play equipment with a high seas pirate parade. Pirates of all kinds boarded the school on Monday 26 June for a pirate parade and official ribbon cutting ceremony for the Silky Oak Pirate Ship. Students had the chance to engage in many pirate themed activities as well as a fish’n’chip lunch that would satisfy any ol’ salty sea dog. The new pirate ship doubles as an outdoor classroom that will allow seafaring students a chance to learn and create in this fun and interactive environment.

Murder sentence awaits By Casey Neill A Clyde North man is awaiting sentencing over a murder and a separate knife attack. On Monday 19 June the Supreme Court of Victoria heard that Christian Bain-Singh, 23, stabbed Rani Featherston, 34, 21 times during a fatal attack in Lace Street, Doveton, about 2.30am on 2 April 2014. He pleaded guilty to the murder, as well as aggravated burglary and intentionally causing serious injury in relation to a separate attack on Daniel Maynard in his Doveton home 11 days earlier. Justice Christopher Beale will sentence Bain-Singh on Friday 28 July. Prosecutor Anne Hassan told the court that Bain-Singh stabbed Ms Featherston in the back. “She was chased and she was stabbed again,” she said.

Police then executed a search warrant at Bain-Singh’s Clyde North address, seized weapons and drug paraphernalia. Police found a 12-inch knife on Mr Maynard’s pillow. The court heard that Bain-Singh lost his job as a butcher in Doveton in March 2014. His fiancee ended their relationship and he was struggling to pay his rent. Ms Hassan said Bain-Singh constantly handled knives, even while reading a book, used illicit drugs and drank to excess. The court heard he had an “acrimo-

Ms Hassan said he discussed the case with a friend who was wearing a recording device on 9 June last year. She said that on 15 June BainSingh attended an appointment at Cranbourne Police Station and told police he was at home asleep in bed when Ms Featherston was murdered. Police placed him in a holding cell with an undercover police operative, Billy. “He told Billy he murdered her as

When confronted, she threatened to jump the fence and kick the dog. Bain-Singh called police and said Ms Featherston was “carrying on like a bloody lunatic and was probably drug and alcohol affected”. His legal representative, Nadia Keddeche, told the court that Ms Featherston referenced this interaction when she encountered Bain-Singh on the night of her death. Ms Keddech said her client felt threatened by Ms Featherston “because she had mentioned and recognised him from ringing the police back in November 2013. “And there were words exchanged by Ms Featherston to him that she was going to get him,” she said.
Ms Keddeche told the court that Bain-Singh was 21 at the time and “it seems that he’d reached a point in his life where it all became too much”. She said his family unit was “dysfunctional in the sense that he had siblings that were present from different fathers and also step-siblings and there was some abuse by his stepfather”. “What was definitely lacking in his childhood was his father figure,” she said. Ms Keddeche said Bain-Singh “attended several secondary schools because of bullying” and that the “relationship with his mother has never been a good one”. He was hospitalised at age 15 with depression and self-harming. “Mr Bain-Singh showed and expressed what appeared to be significant and genuine remorse,” she said.
Housing relief services program scrapped - or is it? By Victoria Stone-Meadows A community legal service has slammed the State Government for removing funding for a program that specifically assists vulnerable people living in illegal rooming houses in Melbourne’s South East. However, the government has denied it has cut funding for the program and says instead it has integrated the scheme into a wider suite of services. The Peninsula Community Legal Centre which runs the Rooming House Outreach Program in Melbourne’s south east suburbs has accused the State Government of dis-
mantling the program. The centre claims, in the last 12 months, it has assisted 1237 people living in the South East in vulnerable housing stations via the Rooming House Outreach Program. Due a restructure of homeless and housing relief services conducted by the State Government, the centre will no longer run the program. Peninsula Community Legal Centre CEO Jackie Galloway said the program provided support to assist people in both registered and illegal rooming houses that might be isolated from assistance services. “This is a specialist service visiting registered and unregistered room-
ing houses in the southern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne identifying vulnerable people and providing vital support services," she said. “The loss of this program will see vulnerable rooming house residents face uncertainty about their rights and responsibilities particularly during this time of major legislative change for the rooming house sector.” However, Minister for Consumer Affairs Marlene Kairouz said the program would be absorbed into a wider ranging suite of services that would provide better access and assistance for vulnerable people. “The Rooming House Outreach
Program will become a more comprehensive, state-wide Tenancy Assistance and Advocacy Program (TAAP),” Ms Kairouz said. “The Rooming House Outreach Program was delivered out of just two metropolitan locations,” she said. “This new program goes much further by engaging 13 communitybased agencies across the state to reach tenants who need help - including many rooming house residents outside of Melbourne." The new program will take effect from 30 June this year, and will see 13 separate community-based agencies to deliver the TAAP across the state.

Move to restore hall to its former glory By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Casey council will assist the Cranbourne Public Hall committee of management to acquire grant funding to update the dilapidated building. A resolution put forward by Councillor Amanda Stapledon at a recent council meeting will see council reaching out to the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP) on behalf of the the hall to help secure funding. Volunteer venue manager for the Cranbourne Public Hall Judy Davis said the hall needed a lot of work to bring it up to scratch. “The floor badly needs replacing or redoing which will cost about $15,000 to have it stripped back and resurfaced,” she said. “The toilets are very 1970s; they desperately need an update, all around our windows needs repainting and some need replacing.” “Even the curtains need replacing and the ceiling is in disrepair, the PA system needs replacing, then you go outside, the car park really needs to be asphalted.” “How can we expect people to come in their good clothes when the car park is all muddy or dusty?” The Cranbourne Public Hall committee of management has been doing what they can to stay on top of the maintenance, but Ms Davis said they didn’t have the funds to do the major works required. “Over the hall is a bit run down and we’ve started painting inside but

facilities this size for community events such as debutante balls and other things,” she said. “This is a wonderful hall, a classic public hall with a beautiful stage and beautiful dance floor.” She said with the council’s support, the hall’s committee of management would have a better chance of securing the funding they needed.
“The committee want it done and while it does not sit on our land, it is on DELWP land, council wants to everything they can to help,” she said. “We will be looking towards DELWP and the landfill levy that is sitting there to see if we can access some of that to restore the hall to its former glory.”
Casey looks to state funds for family violence strategy By Victoria Stone-Meadows The City of Casey Council will take advantage of the State Government's big spending on family violence prevention as they develop a new family violence strategy. Casey Council will seek funding from the government and input from experts as it moves forward with implementing a new Family Violence Prevention Strategy. At the council meeting on Tuesday 20 June, Councillor Rosalie Crestani recounted an emotional discussion she had with an unnamed police officer who manages family violence cases in City of Casey. The discussion was used to highlight the toll violence against women and children in the Casey community has on everyone involved; from family members to police officers. At the meeting, council passed recommendations that will see them writing to government ministers and experts as they seek assistance in forming the new strategy. The council will seek the input of Dr Dina McMillan for the creation of the report as well as input from the head of the government’s new anti-violence agency Family Safety Victoria. The council will also request a briefing from the government on the role of the Support and Safety Hubs that were proposed in the latest State budget. The report presented to the council also outlined the cost, locations, and timeframe for the new banners and signage in the municipality originally proposed by Councillor Rex Flannery. Council officers outlined in the report that a minimum of six weeks would be required to undertake the design, fabrication and installation of the anti-family violence banners. For 156 banners and flags of varying sizes to be designed, printed and put up around the municipality on exiting banner and flag poles will cost about $27,300 and be covered by the current budget. The council will develop the new family violence prevention strategy and accompanying action plan in the coming months.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers to avoid incorrect claims for work-related expenses at tax time this year. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said the ATO is using real-time data to compare taxpayers with others in similar occupations and income brackets to identify higher-than-expected claims related to expenses including vehicle, travel, internet and mobile phone and self-education. “It is important to know what you’re eligible to claim before lodging your tax return and to make sure you don’t claim more than you’re entitled to,” Ms Anderson said. According to the ATO, deductions taxpayers probably can’t claim include trips between home and work (private travel), car expenses for transporting bulky tools or equipment (unless employees need to use bulky tools to do their job or the employer requires the equipment is transported or there is no secure area to store the equipment at work), car expenses that have been salary sacrificed, meal expenses for travel (unless required to work away from home overnight), private travel, everyday clothes purchased to wear to work, a flat rate for cleaning eligible work clothes without being able to show how the cost was calculated, higher education contributions charged through the HELP scheme, self-education expenses when the study doesn’t have a direct connection to current employment, private use of phone or internet expenses - only the work-related portion counts and up-front deductions for tools and equipment that cost more than $300. Bold moves for marketing By Rebecca Skilton It’s been said that Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. And according to a Brisbane marketing expert, it’s this exact insanity that too many businesses apply to their strategic marketing plan. Marketing strategist, creative writer and inspiring conference speaker Damian Morgan encouraged local business owners to be bold, precise and informed at a business excellence seminar held by Star News Group on Thursday 22 July. He walked business owners through a marketing crash course covering the whos, the whats, the whens, the wheres and the whys of strategic marketing at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. And the overriding theme? Marketing isn’t optional when seeking business success. Using examples of brands such as Tradie underwear and Workwear, Adidas, Nike and Lorna Jane, he stressed the importance of brand positioning, strongly encouraging businesses to have a firm understanding of their target audience. He said that a good advertisement doesn’t appeal to everyone, but instead charms and hooks people that the products and services are aimed at. “A bad ad costs the same as a good ad but the difference is bad ads don’t work,” he said. “We think that advertising is telling people what we’re capable of which can be our biggest mistake but great advertising actually appeals to people’s hearts as well as their minds. “Good ads don’t hook everyone, but they get far more than they would if they were watered down (to tailor for everyone).” He encouraged business owners to target specific market-

So many small businesses roll over and die in their off seasons but when you promote during the off season, you’re going to win where others won’t. “And when you don’t have seasons, make them up.” When it came to marketing and advertising platforms, he highlighted that the importance of local media outlets should never be overlooked and encouraged business owners to use their local newspapers to tap into the market in which they exist. “If you want to know local news, politics and sports and
about what’s happening in the local area, there isn’t many other sources than the local newspaper,” he said. “The people reading those papers - they’re local. From a commercial point of view, that should be music to your ears. “Local newspapers should be the first cab off the rank, your base layer. “You need to saturate the market in which you sit. If you do that, you’re much more likely to get a return from the people more likely to buy from you.” Within local advertisements he encouraged businesses to use content space wisely, emphasising that ads work best when focused on one ‘hook’ and are tailored to suit the changing needs of individual seasons. “You’re not going to fill the ad with the business’s whole story,” he said. “Use the content space to say one thing - one compelling reason why somebody should give you a go. “And try to scratch different itches once a month.”

Job support for the disabled is making the difference By Casey Neill Fid Constantinides felt like he was “going loopy” while he was desperately searching for an employer to give him a go. The Cranbourne East man has muscular dystrophy, which is causing the muscles in his legs to break down. The 49-year-old walks with crutches and has some trouble with his back and balance, but a small scissor lift and a chair are all he needs to perform his job at Milners Repetition in Dandenong. “It’s going to get worse, but I’m not ready for a home yet,” Mr Constantinides said. “You want to feel like you’re important. “For your own mentality, you need to do something.” One prospective employer asked him to jump from an excavator to prove that he could. Another flat-out asked “so what’s wrong with you?”. Dandenong Valley Job Support (DVJS) was the difference. The non-profit seeks employers willing to give prospective workers with disabilities a go. “Once somebody’s placed into a role, my role is post-placement support,” Carol Watts said.

off the business.” Milners Repetition owner David Gedicke said this was a huge incentive to give Mr Constantinides a go. “Someone came in to train Fid to make sure he understood everything that was being told to him,” he said.
“They didn’t leave until they were confident that he was safe in what he was doing and I was confident in what he was doing. “I think it also did help to have a subsidy to go along, too.” Mr Gedicke said the workers DVJS
presented wanted to work - rather than just meet their Centrelink obligations. “They want to go out and be part of society,” he said. “I’ve had so many people who are sent to you, they come for the interview, and you can tell straight away they’re not interested.” He’s even called applicants to advise they’ve landed the job and been met with disappointment. “If it doesn’t seem to be working out, I can make a call to Carol,” Mr Gedicke said. Milners Repetition makes turn components. “It’s mass production of nuts, bolts, pins and spacers and stuff,” he said. The parts end up in mining, whitegoods, EFTPOS machines and more “the little bits and pieces that you don’t ever think about where they come from”. “We’re focused on large volume manufacturing, whereas a lot of engineering places, anything more than 10 is too many for them,” he said. “Originally, it was my father’s business.” David trained as a jet engine mechanic, but found the business provided him with a creative outlet. He’s been there 25 years and bought it from his dad.

He’s a jack of all trades By Russell Bennett Berwick’s Quinn Spencer would have to be considered one of the local area’s most remarkable and versatile young athletes. Not only is he making a real impact in both local and interleague level footy at Beaconsfield, the 14-year-old is also a prodigiously talented netballer who’s been earmarked as a player of the future in the M-League - the premier men’s netball competition in the state. Quinn has spent his entire footy journey to date at Beaconsfield, and two years ago he started playing netball there too. His first involvement in the sport came through school and he’s moved ahead in leaps and bounds in the years since. “I just found it to be a new challenge,” he said. “There’s football, and I’d learned that, but netball is something different - not many people at school play it.” The St Francis Xavier student recently returned from the Men’s Australian National Netball Championships on the Gold Coast where he represented the Victorian Men’s 17-and-under team. When he was selected in that side he was still only 13. He has continued to take massive strides forward on his sporting journey since, too. He finished in first place for overall champion in the Year 9 boys athletics at St Francis Xavier in Berwick and recently played for the South East Juniors’ (SEJ) under-14 football interleague team. At clubland he plays up an age group - playing in the U15.1 Beaconsfield side. Quinn started playing netball in the midcourt - using his running ability and his endurance to great effect - and he’s also spent a significant amount of time as goal keeper. He said those

He’d love to see more young male sportspeople get involved in netball. Quinn’s involvement isn’t on just the playing side either - he coaches his Year 9/10 school team, where the vast
majority of players have come from basketball. He said he’s found his role as a player-coach to be “trickier than what people perceive it as”, but also spoke on how it helped his game as a player. The biggest strengths of his game

Quinn wants to keep playing both football and netball well into the future and would love to see men’s, boys, and mixed sides play netball in local foot-
ball netball competitions on weekends. “I think it’d be good because girls and guys netball is completely different and it’d be good to get both sides,” he said, adding that some people would be surprised to see the amount of people from both genders who’d put their hands up to play.
Tayla signs up with Rangers for coming WNBL season The Dandenong Basketball Association has announced that Tayla Roberts has signed with the Jayco Rangers for the 2017-18 WNBL season. Roberts will join fellow AIS alumni Sara Blicavs, Carley Mijovic and Tessa Lavey on the 2017-18 Jayco Rangers squad, having all last played together in the 2010-11 WNBL season. An established veteran centre at just 24 years of age, Roberts will bring a strong inside presence to a Jayco Rangers team filled with hot outside shooting. Rangers coach Larissa Anderson was thrilled to hear that the 2010 Rookie of the Year award winner had signed with Dandenong for WNBL 2017-18, stating that she is looking forward to working with the young star on her development. “It is fantastic to have Tayla on board with the Rangers for the upcoming season,” Anderson said. “We have seen consistently what she is capable of at WNBL level over the last couple of seasons and will be a valuable contributor to the Rangers
front court, complementing the rest of our group really well.” Roberts is known throughout the league as a strong post-player and fans got a first-hand preview of what she will bring to the Jayco Rangers last year when she visited Dandenong Stadium with Adelaide. Lighting the Rangers up with 21 points on 8-11 shooting, Roberts showed off the brilliance that earned her AIS selection in 2009. Bringing that same brilliance and passion for the game consistently is something Roberts is looking to grab hold of with the Jayco Rangers and, in particular, with head coach Larissa Anderson. “I had a couple of years where I kind of just plateaued and was no longer enjoying my basketball,” Roberts said. “But over the past 12 months I have really regained my love for the sport and have made some big improvements to my game. “I feel that joining the Jayco Rang-
ers will really push me further down that path - they have a great culture and feel about them. “You look at the team and coaching staff and see what amazing chemistry and comradery they all have, it’s definitely a big selling point for me. “I have great friends on the team and Larissa is an amazing coach, I think she’s really going to help take my game to the next level.” Roberts now rounds out the core 10-player rotation for the Jayco Rangers in 2017-18, joining what seems to be a team poised for another deep WNBL finals run. But while finals success is always on a player’s mind, for Roberts the most exciting part of the upcoming season is being back on TV screens, with the league broadcasted live each week on FOXTEL. “I’m thrilled to have our league back being televised again, it’s the best way to promote women’s basketball and will show off what an amazing brand of basketball we deliver,” Roberts said.

Stingrays’ goal blitz hits By Nick Creely TAC CUP (DEVELOPMENT ROUNDS) REVIEW - ROUND 11 An enthralling 13-goal second half has seen the Dandenong Stingrays register a commanding 76-point victory over Western Jets. With five youngsters making their debuts - Alex Young, Daniel Frampton, Jack McHale, Riley Boland and Will Barron - there was a breath of fresh air in the Stingrays’ line-up. After a slow start by both sides, Dylan Morris finally snared the opening major of the game, before debutant Alex Young kicked a goal on the stroke of quarter time to give the ‘Rays a 12-point quarter time lead. Another errant second term by the Stingrays meant that despite all their dominance, they were equal pegging with the Jets despite having six more scoring shots. With second halves being the Stingrays’ kryptonite throughout the year, a goal in the first minute of the third quarter by Finlay Bayne sparked a run of four goals in eight minutes, with the ‘Rays ending the quarter having kicked seven goals to nil. With the game put to bed, the ‘Rays then run amok in the final quarter, with Tom Freeman, Riley D’Arcy, Mitchell Riordan, Jai Taylor, Tom Bedford all kicking final term goals as the hapless Jets could only look on in misery. “Our second halves have been poor this year and it was great for the group to answer that challenge,” Coach Nick Cox said. “It was a windy day down at Williamstown as it usually tends to be, but

By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 10 Casey is beginning to rise to a whole new level after claiming another giant scalp - this time the previously undefeated Box Hill on Saturday by 26-points. Down at Box Hill City Oval - the fortress of the Hawks AFL-listed forward Sam Weideman slammed home the first two and last two majors of the first quarter to guide the Dees to a handy 18-point quarter time buffer. Weideman once again got the Demons going with his fifth goal within the sixth minute of the second term, and despite the Hawks fighting back to kick three goals for the term, the Demons held the advantage and control of the game. After dictating terms for the first hour of the play, the intensity lifted from both sides after the main break, and it was Box Hill who got the run and momentum - kicking three of the first four goals of the third term - to slice the margin to under a goal. But after Bailey Fritsch (three goals) kicked a clever dribbler against the run of play, the Demons once again came roaring back to kick three consecutive goals to undo all the hard work of the Hawks’ forwards. And in an electrifying final quarter, the Demons would not relinquish their lead despite some heroics from Tyrone

Epic battle: giants poised By David Nagel The two heavyweights of the South East Football Netball League will collide when Cranbourne and Berwick lock horns in a round 11 blockbuster at Casey Fields on Saturday. Grand finalists of the last two years, the Eagles and Wickers have been at each other’s throats since the Wickers bolstered their stocks at the conclusion of 2014. The recruitment of players like Ash Smith, Ben Kearns, Michael Johnson and Michael Riseley elevated the Wickers above Beaconsfield and Narre Warren to be the main challengers to Cranbourne’s title as the best team in the competition. The Wickers claimed the 2015 premiership over the Eagles before Simon Goosey’s men turned the tables in a classic decider last year. The Eagles lead the Wickers 6-3 since the start of 2015, but one premiership each is the stat that defines their recent battles. The Wickers are staring an unbeaten season in the face if they can get over the Eagles on their own deck this weekend. “One of the things we’re most proud of this season is our away record,” Ber-
wick coach Stewart Kemperman said. “We’ve beaten Beaconsfield, Narre Warren and Doveton at their home grounds, so taking on Cranbourne at Cranbourne is sort of like our final frontier when it comes to the top teams in the competition. They’ll be much better than the last time we played them, but we’re looking forward to the challenge.” That round two engagement gave us the first real indication of just how good the Wickers could be. They blanketed the Eagles, suffocated them to the point where they could manage just three goals in a desperate three quarters of footy. A storm rolled in, finishing the game at three-quarter time, the Eagles 47 points adrift. “We don’t dwell on that performance too much,” Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey said. “Yes they were too good for us on the day, there were no excuses, but it was a weird day, one side had the wind for three quarters. “We’re obviously looking forward to the challenge; we’re in a good spot at the moment and we think we can turn that performance around. We played into their hands that day, our pressure and work rate
was down and we know what we need to do to turn things around.” Kearns has since moved on, but Smith, Johnson and Riseley are big-game performers who will have a big say in the outcome. But it’s the Eagles -on the back of a big game from midfielder Shaun Marusic - to strike back with a thrilling two-point win. Round 10 saw teams inside the top five confirm their significant advantage over the remainder of the competition. Cranbourne defender Brandon Osborne kept Tooradin’s Setanta O’hAilpin goal-less in the Eagles’ 28-point victory at Westernport Oval, while Doveton veteran Ryan Hendy kicked five goals in the Doves’ 65-point win over a disappointing Officer. And Berwick’s Trent Thomas and Brody Connelly ran rampant in the Wickers’ 253-point thrashing of Hampton Park at Edwin Flack Reserve. Thomas kicked 11, and Connelly nine, while Ash Smith snagged five of his own in the most comprehensive victory of the season. One thing’s for certain - it won’t be so easy for the Wickers this weekend!

Eagles have landed, with scalps in claws By David Nagel Cranbourne has claimed its first legitimate scalp of the season and thrown the race for this year’s premiership wide open with a stunning 41-38 victory over the previously unbeaten Tooradin at Casey Fields on Saturday. The Eagles four wins had come against the bottom-four teams in the competition, but a recent narrow loss to reigning champions Narre Warren gave Donna Wilson and her girls a truck-load of belief heading in. “I don’t have words for it, I’m unbelievably proud,” Wilson said. “I’m not the type of person to shed a tear, but I did do a happy dance. I could tell in the first two minutes that we had a great chance of winning, the girls were really switched on, and it was just an awesome game of netball.” The Eagles were magnificent all over the court. Dynamite defenders Sharni Lambden (goal defence) and Tara Cecil (goal keeper) were both at their brilliant best, having a great duel with Seagulls’ goalers Alex Duff, Jess Cox and Alex Maher. Mel Perrins (centre), Darcy O’Donnell (wing defence) and Nat Sparks (wing attack) had the better of the midcourt battles, while Tegan Stahl (goal attack) and Alanah Hardy (goal shooter) stayed cool and composed against the tough defence of Ebony Dolan and Bec Kinna. Tooradin has a week off now for the bye while the Eagles will look to back up their impressive victory with another strong performance against an improving Berwick - who gave up a big lead to draw 43-43 with a fast-finishing Hampton Park at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Wickers looked all over winners for three quarters, building a five-goal lead at quarter time to seven at the half-way mark and building even further to nine at the final break. Megan Egbers (GS) was dynamic with 13 goals in the final quarter while Maddi Hanlen (C) really lifted in the middle. The Wickers are very much improved and the form of players like Renee Gill, Emily Pratt and Sarah Nash suggests there’ll be plenty of more wins on the way. Doveton bounced back to the winners list with a 59-41 victory over ROC at Starling Road. The Doves welcomed back some key players for the engagement and were right on top from the start, scoring 16-8 in the opening term.

Coach blasts team By Nick Creely VICTORIAN WOMENS FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 6 Cranbourne coach Sein Clearihan has blasted his team’s performance on Sunday, labelling it as “extremely disappointing”. The Eagles were belted by the Eastern Devils by 64-points at Casey Fields, undoing the hard work in getting its season back on track in the last month. Coming into the match as one of the in-form teams of the competition, the Eagles came out breathing fire, scoring the first two goals of the match. But from there the Eagles scored just six more points for the game, with the Devils flexing their muscles and making them look listless. “We put a lot of effort into it and came out in the first quarter and jumped out of the box - the girls then lost their way a little bit,” Clearihan said. “We were bees to honey - we seemed to be over-trying and when we did that we pushed too far back and that just kills you out the back door with the sweeper and the Eastern talls just dominated us.” Although the Eagles put a younger side on the park, Clearihan said it was no excuse for the performance. “I knew we’d be up against it I thought we’d be able to match it

Shiny medal haul by Casey Masters By Nick Creely The Casey Masters Athletics club remain one of the most dominant Victorian groups after a stunning 22 medals - including 16 gold medals - were won at the recent Australian Masters Athletics Championships in Darwin. The event - which was held from Friday 9 June to Monday 12 June was a raging success for Casey, who continues to excel all around the country in a range of tournaments. Paul Olsson simply dominated his four events with gold medals in Triple Jump, Hammer, Weight Pentathlon and Weight Throw in his M60-64 division, an extraordinary achievement. Despite being the smallest venue in Victorian Masters Athletics Casey, the friendly group based at Casey Fields each Monday night at 7pm, encourages anyone interested in their general health and fitness to come along regardless of ability.
Mixed bag for Cavaliers on a tough away trip By Nick Creely BIG V BASKETBALL REVIEW ROUND 13 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN Saturday night saw the Casey Cavaliers embark on the toughest away trip of them all - to face the ladder leaders Waverley Falcons in their own backyard. Despite battling hard, the Falcons out-muscled and out-worked the Cavs to win 87-76. Powerful duo Jason Reardon (22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists) and Desmond Simmons (25 points, 10 rebounds) really tore up the court and caused headaches for the Cavs. Mitch Chapman (20 points, four rebounds, four assists) was the lone hand for the Cavs. The very next day, the Cavs returned home to play Whittlesea, who are on the bottom of the table
with four wins. In a completely different style of match, the Cavs were far too strong - winning 98-81 - Raheem Lemons (26 points) was in fine touch for the home side. The Cavs are in fifth position with a 9-7 record, and face Diamond Valley and Werribee on the weekend. DIVISION ONE WOMEN The Division One Cavs’ side had the bye over the weekend, but remain second last on the table with a 4-10 record. They will play Werribee and Camberwell this weekend. YOUTH LEAGUE TWO MEN It was yet another successful weekend for the second placed Cavs, who knocked off Keysborough Cougars 91-77 on Sunday. The game, played at Casey Indoor, was always in control of the
Cavs, who did what they needed to do. The Cavs had plenty of winners all over the court, but Jordan Gooiker (24 points) was a standout and Brendon Head (14 points, 10 rebounds) contributed strongly for the home side. Attention now turns to Saturday night, with a top two clash between the Cavs and Pakenham Warriors, before they travel to Mornington on Sunday to play the Breakers. YOUTH LEAGUE TWO WOMEN The fourth placed Cavs also had the opportunity to freshen up over the weekend with a bye. As one of the inform teams in the competition, there will be a lot of expectation on the Cavs to continue on their winning ways. They face Blackburn Vikings on Saturday night before hosting Mornington on Sunday afternoon.

Comets crash down the table By Nick Creely FFV STATE LEAGUES - ROUND 13 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST The Casey Comets have slumped all the way to ninth on the table after a disappointing 0-2 loss to Malvern City FC at Kooyong Park on Saturday. Coming into the game in hot form and against a side lower on the ladder, the Comets were jumped early when City scored the opening goal to take a 1-0 lead into half time. And although the Comets should have been too strong, City scored once more in the dying moments to claim one of the round’s biggest surprises. After being seventh coming into the round, the loss is fairly costly for the Comets. In other matches, Mornington SC defeated St Kilda 3-0, FC Clifton Hill toppled Warragul United 1-0, Morwell Pegasus went down 3-4 to Langwarrin in an entertaining clash, Caulfield United were too strong for Manningham United 3-1 and South Springvale drew 1-1 with Mooroolbark. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Berwick City made it four wins in a row when they accounted for Peninsula Strikers in a 2-1 home win. Berwick once again fell behind in the 16th minute but goals to Orlando Mejias and Bryce Ziada sealed another victory to City who now move up to third on the ladder. “They hit us hard today and it was a scrappy game, but the boys kept their composure to dominate the second half and deserved the win,” Coach Gerry McDonagh said after the game. Berwick’s next assignment is a tough away game against Frankston Pines on Saturday afternoon. Doveton have also registered yet another solid victory, this time against Doncaster Rovers 2-1 on Friday night. After the Rovers scored the only goal of the opening half, the Doves ran over the top in a dominant second half with goals to Rinor Muriqi and Naseer Mohammed. The Doves sit in second place and continue to breathe down the necks of ladder leaders Eltham Redbacks. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH In arguably the most important match in a tight State League 5 season, Pakenham United fell to the Casey Panthers 0-1 on Saturday. With both sides occupying sixth and seventh spot on the table, United couldn’t score in the second half after Daniel Nelson struck in the first half for the Panthers. Bunyip put in a competitive showing against Lyndale United, losing 0-1 but showing some greater intent. In other matches, Somerville defeated Drouin 1-0, Dandenong Warriors powered through to a 5-1 victory, Rowville beat White Star Dandenong 1-0 and Old Mentonians inflicted Sandown with its first loss of 2017, winning 1-0.

Sedan takes to the stars Holden has added a four-door Astra sedan variant to join the Astra hatch that was launched in December 2016. A station wagon will be added to the range later this year. This car market segment is extremely price sensitive in Australia to the extent that prices of the Astra hatch had to be reduced within months of it going on sale. Even $1500 can make all the difference and hatch sales are noticeably higher now than in the early days. GM-Holden has learned its lesson and Astra sedan prices start at $20,490 and run through to $29,790. On-road costs have to be factored in, however some pretty good driveaway deals are being offered during the initial weeks, possibly months, to get the Astra established. Styling of the new Astra sedan is neat and tidy, but doesn’t really break any new ground. This is a smart move as cars in this class tend to be purchased by sensible buyers who don’t want something that may look out of date in a few years, and depreciate savagely as a result. Holden Astra is built on an all-new vehicle modular architecture that features up to 120kg weight reduction from the model it supersedes. This adds performance at the same

Infotainment is centred around a colour touchscreen that’s neatly integrated into the stylish dashboard. It uses the latest Holden MyLink system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s USB input with iPod connectivity. A clever design feature is the thumb rest to steady your hand while reaching the screen with your forefinger. On the safety front, all models have six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), automatic headlights, a rear view camera and rear park assist.

Even the basic Holden Astra LS is pretty well equipped. It rides on 16inch alloy wheels. It has a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, steering wheel mounted controls, a six speaker audio system, cruise control. The Astra LS+ adds a leather appointed steering wheel, automatic high beam assist, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), Holden Eye forward
facing camera, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Distance Indicator, Forward Collision Alert (FCA). Next comes the Astra LT. Over the LS+ it has 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear lip spoiler, an 8.0-inch touchscreen and DAB+ radio. It also has heated door mirrors, front park assist, Side Blind Spot Alert, Passive Entry & Push-button Start, Advanced Park Assist, and automatic windscreen wipers. Finally, there’s the king of the hill Astra LTZ. It rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and has climate controlled air conditioning, an electric sunroof, chromed exterior window surrounds as well as chromed interior highlights combined with piano black. The front seats are heated. The only engine offered in Holden Astra sedan is a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol producing 110 kW of power. Oddly, maximum torque is 245 Nm with a six-speed manual, but 240 Nm with a six-speed automatic transmission. Seems that by GM’s internal standards that auto can’t handle that extra five Nm. The Astra LS is the only model offered with a manual gearbox. The more powerful 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine (147 kW / 280 Nm) that’s featured in the Astra hatch isn’t an option in the sedan.
On-centre steering feel has been softened a little to make it less sensitive in the straight ahead position which makes it suited to our rougher than average roads. Once you turn the wheel the feel comes in early and is nicely direct. There’s seldom any need to correct it mid corner unless you hit rougher than average bumps and dips. Comfort wise, the suspension is generally proved supple. However, the stylish low-profile tyres on the upmarket Astra models had a ride that wasn’t as good as on the lower grades. There was some road roar on coarse-chip surfaces from the lowprofile tyres. To its credit Holden took us over some pretty harsh surfaces during the launch program out of Coolangatta airport and in the hinterland of Queensland and Northern NSW. The 1.4-litre turbo engine is a lively little unit that’s a real pleasure to sit behind. There’s the inevitable turbo lag, but once that has passed, which doesn’t take long, there plenty of torque to provide good hill climbing and to prompt overtaking. Here’s a big feature, don’t take our word for it. Holden has a Take Your Time Test Drive scheme that lets you borrow a car for up to 24 hours.
