Using chainsaws and with earmuffs on it can be hard to hear the traffic. Knowing the drivers have to slow down when they see the flashing lights will give us peace of mind,” he said. Local emergency services workers are eagerly anticipating the introduction of a new Victorian road rule aimed at keeping them safe. From 1 July, drivers must slow to 40km/h when passing a stationary or slow-moving emergency vehicle responding to an emergency with flashing lights or a siren sounding. The new rule applies to police, ambulance, SES, CFA and MFB vehicles with flashing lights or a siren. It also applies to VicRoads Transport Safety Service vehicles with magenta flashing lights. Drivers who flout the new road rule face a $277 fine or a court penalty of as much as $793. “Fantastic!” was the reaction of Emerald SES Unit Controller Ben Owen. “We have a lot of near-misses. Some drivers just don’t slow down, despite the signs we put up,” Mr Owen said. After passing the vehicle, drivers should not increase speed again until reaching a safe distance from the scene, so that emergency workers can do their job without fear of being hit by passing traffic. It is because of the number of emergency workers killed or injured on Victorian roads after being struck by passing vehicles or debris that the State Government is introducing the new road rule. In a recent survey almost one in five emergency services workers said they’d had four or more “near misses” while stopped on the roadside over the past three years. “I’ve seen plenty myself,” Mr Owen said. “We are out in the worst of the weather, when it is foggy, wet, windy and/or dark, and it can be hard for drivers to see us.” He added that he would like to see some signage on the back of emergency vehicles reminding drivers of the need to slow down. Healesville SES Controller Geoff Stott said that most drivers were courteous, but hopefully the new rule would encourage even the small percentage

No winter cheer here By Derek Schlennstedt Winter - the perfect time to rug up, turn the heating on and hibernate indoors. For the majority this is the way they spend winter, cosied up inside with a blanket; but, for many winter is a time they dread - where the temperatures plummet and the only source of warmth they get is by putting on more blankets and coats. To help those who cannot help themselves, the team at Yarra Valley Innate Chiropractic are calling on residents to donate warm clothing and blankets as part of its annual winter appeal. The coat drive aims to gather up as many coats and blankets as possible, to be donated to charity groups across the Valley, including Warburton’s Redwood Community Centre.
Dr Alex Rodwell, from the clinic told the mail that the partnership they had with the Redwood centre in Warburton had been going on four years and each year they received more and more coats for those who needed them most. “A lot of people in the Upper Yarra only have fireplaces in their house, for whatever reason can’t afford firewood, and older people struggle to make it through winter.” “The winter coat appeal is a way that we can share news that this is a problem which is going on and we can all help to fulfil that need,” Mr Rodwell said. Each year the clinic receives hundreds of coats and blankets and Alex is urging people with any spare old coats or blankets to donate. “Hundreds of coats - we have
one dedicated room and fill it completely. “It does come back to those extra layers ... even if people could only donate one coat or blanket this season, that could make a big difference to someone. “Knowing that most people have at least one cupboard of old coats and blankets to sort through; it could be a great excuse to do an early spring clean,” he said. Alex said any coats or blankets that were clean, in wearable condition, and had a bit of warmth in them were candidates. Forest Fire Management Victoria spokesperson, Peter Kambouris, said people needed to be mindful of the deadline. “If people are intending to stock up on firewood for the coming winter, then they need to do so before the season closes next week,” he said. “Make sure firewood collection is carried out only from designated collection areas that are open,” Mr Kambouris said. If residents need help locating domestic firewood designated collection areas, the Forest Fire Management Victoria website has maps of all sites available at https://www.ffm.vic.gov.au/firewood/firewood-collection-in-your-region . Under the Forest Act 1958, people who collect firewood outside designated firewood collection areas or a firewood collection season, take more than the maximum allowable amounts or sell firewood they have collected can face on the spot fines of $607, or a maximum penalty in court of one year imprisonment or a $7,583.50 fine, or both. Any information the community may have about the illegal removal of firewood for sale can be reported to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on 136 186 and quote ‘Operation Block Splitter’. The spring firewood collection season will open on 1 September.

Honeyeaters and Governor By Derek Schlennstedt At Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve the sounds of helmeted honeyeaters echo through the eucalypts, and in among the bush Macclesfield Primary School along with friends of the helmeted honeyeater have come together to welcome an honoured guest. On Thursday 22 June, Governor of Victoria, Linda Dessau and husband Anthony Howard QC, visited Yellingbo Reserve and were treated to a warm welcome by primary school students, community groups and the helmeted honeyeaters themselves. Bob Anderson, president of the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeaters welcomed Mrs Dessau but it was the Macclesfield Primary School students who really stole the show. The Grade 5 and 6 students from Macclesfield performed a moving rendition of the original song ‘saving the helmeted honeyeater,’ which Mrs Dessau found heart-warming. Although a parent produced the music it was the students who came up with the lyrics which delivered a poignant message to protect our ‘little neighbours’ and that ‘when we work together we can save a spe-
cies or two’. “It’s particularly heart-warming to see you kids create and perform that song and have that sense of community in helping build this space,” Mrs Dessau said. Mrs Dessau and Mr Howard, with the help of students Eva and Hudson helped to plant a commemorative tree in a re-vegetation area - which offers vital protection and habitat to the honeyeaters. The Governor's visit comes after an announcement by DELWP that a successful breeding season had resulted in around 200 wild helmeted honeyeaters - the highest number since the recovery program began in 1989. This increase in numbers became obvious when senior ornithologist at DELWP, Bruce Quin fed the birds resulting in five sightings of the endangered helmeted honeyeater, which Mrs Dessau described as delightfully ‘vibrant’ in colour. Mrs Dessau commended Macclesfield Primary School on their 20year involvement with the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, whom she also praised on their incredible contribution and work. “We know a fair bit about the

Healesville’s connection to Indigenous culture and the natural environment has been immortalised in sculpture seats that were installed across the town earlier this month. The seats pay special tribute and celebrate ‘Wattarang,’ the platypus, which inhabits local waterways around Healesville and the Yarra Valley. Yarra Ranges Council’s Communities for Platypus program commissioned Indigenous sculptor Glen Romanis to produce two sculptural seats which have been installed outside The Memo and in Coronation Park in June. Future plans surrounding the seat in Coronation Park include the seat becoming part of a larger walk.

Healesville police want to remind people that there are still a lot of honest citizens out there. Senior Constable Kirsty Swankie said people often handed in lost items which remained unclaimed. Among their current stash are bikes, a twin pram and jewellery, but iPhones are also high on the list of ‘lost’ items. “There is a facility on iphones where you can put an emergency number. “If people used that it could help them get their phones back when we get a phone that is locked or out of charge,” she said. A motorcyclist in his thirties died on Friday night, 23 June, when his bike ran off Myers Creek Road in Toolangi and hit a tree. The man, who police said had contacts in the area, was travelling from Healesville along Myers Creek Road towards Toolangi when the crash occurred around 5.10pm. The man died at the scene. They’ll be sewing in the street on 1 July. Members of Plastic Bag Free Healesville have taken to sewing machines over the past weeks to launch the use of re-usable boomerang bags in Healesville. Over 20 stores around Healesville have taken up the cause to support the use of re-usable bags to help reduce the impact of plastic bags, which enter waterways and impact on wildlife. Healesville IGA, in conjunction with the Plastic Bag Free Healesville group is launching the movement outside the newly 'plastic-free’ Healesville IGA on Saturday 1 July, between 11am and 2pm. David Johnston, Member of Plastic Bag Free Healesville, said it was an important step in the right direction to think about the impact plastic bags and packaging had on the environment. “It’s a philosophical statement to think about what you’re doing and do you really need to take all those plastic bags home with you?” “Because what are you going to do with those plastic bags - and where are they going to end up?”

The launch is a start that David hopes will eventually see Healesville become plastic bag free. “From 1 July, IGA won’t be giving out plastic bags, so bring baskets or get some boomerang bags,” he said. “There will be music, a choir will sing send-up songs based around not using plastic bags - there will be people sewing and Badger Creek Primary School is doing a sausage sizzle.” “It’s more a conscience-raiser for people ... making people think about what they’re going to do once they’re finished with that plastic bag.” “We can make a difference for our children and grandchildren,” Mr Johnston said.

A similar attack was planned for Anzac Day 2015. Since September 2014, our agencies have arrested 63 people here in Australia on terrorism offences. The Turnbull Government and our national security agencies are continually reviewing and adapting our country’s laws and approach to combating terrorism. The government has initiated significant policy and legislative reform to enhance our national security. We have acknowledged and accepted all of the recommendations relating to the Commonwealth from the Coroner’s report on the Lindt Cafe siege.

Volunteers driven off AS a volunteer of the information centre at Healesville for 10 years, I was saddened by the story on the closing of the centre, basically saying it was lack of volunteers that caused it to close. Ten years ago, we had around 20 to 30 volunteers who have left over the years due to the way the centre was run. The volunteers that were left worked hard to fill shifts and trying to keep the centre open, with no help from management. As far as online bookings go, I worked on Easter Saturday with another volunteer and we had 150 people come through. Nobody needed bookings, they just wanted information on Healesville and surrounds but no longer! Now you see people standing outside the centre wondering when it’s going to open! The $321 million boost includes funding to provide for an additional 100 intelligence officers, over 100 tactical and covert surveillance operators, as well as nearly 100 forensic experts to strengthen our fight against crime and terrorism both at home and abroad. ism, maybe that should be reviewed and redirected to a volunteer-run organisation. With numerous tourist facilities and businesses that benefit from tourism in the area, surely enough people could be found to run an organisation, by the people in the local industry for the local industry. Back in 2013, the Healesville Action Group raised concerns about the new tourist information signage in the area, particularly the one outside the Memorial Hall. Good sign and information; the only problem is that it is buried among the vegetation and can only be seen if walking east on the north side of the main street. It can’t be seen from other directions, or the adjacent car park because the rusty steel pole with the anaemic ‘i’ on top is too short and just blends into the surrounds. Is this indicative of the best the professional tourism promoters can offer? The Healesville Structure Plan makes a point of the importance of the tourist industry to Healesville with about 30 per cent of the retail spend in the area attributable to tourism. We have a developed tourist precinct around the railway station, a play area for the kids, good parking for tourists to stop including those with caravans. Perhaps it is about time the centre was returned to the volunteers to run, although this may be too late now with the shire advertising for new tenants. John Rosser, Healesville Action Group.

Committee to review CFA Bill By Derek Schlennstedt The State Labor Government’s controversial CFA Bill that would see Victoria’s fire services split in two, has stalled in the Upper House after the Legislative Council voted in support of the Liberal Nationals' motion to refer the bill to a committee for review. On 20 June, the State Government gave in to pressure from a selected few cross benchers who demanded more consultation be undertaken regarding the State Government's bill. The bill would split the CFA into a volunteer-only organisation and send career firefighters into the MFB to create Fire Services Victoria and would also see firefighters receive cancer compensation.
Liberal Coalition MP Brad Battin said it offered an opportunity for Labor MPs to raise concerns over the bill. “This is an opportunity for Labor MPs like Danielle Green, Mary-Anne Thomas, Sharon Knight, Maree Edwards, Geoff Howard and Josh Bull to stand up for their communities and to tell this Melbourne-centric premier that splitting up the CFA is not acceptable.” “Daniel Andrews has tried to ram this bill through without any consultation because he knows this legislation will tear apart the CFA and put the lives and property of Victorians at risk,” said Mr Battin in a statement. The bill, created to restructure the agencies, was sent to a committee on 22 June, and will not be voted on until after
the review is handed down on 8 August. This committee is made up of eight MPs, three government MPs, three opposition MPs, a Greens MP, and a crossbench MP. A government spokesperson from Mr Merlino’s office stated they were looking forward to return the bill to parliament. “This is a strong bill and we look forward to it returning to the parliament.” “Our priority is the safety of all Victorians and ensuring our fire services can meet the fast growing needs of the state." “It is common practice for bills before the parliament to be sent to a committee for further consideration," the spokesperson stated.
Trapped in a violent relationship there was a time in Lisa Bonavita’s life where she thought she would not survive to see her children grow older. The mother of three faced years of physical, financial and mental abuse until eventually she reached a ‘critical point,’ where, she said, she realised that unless she left ‘he was going to kill me’. “There does come a time when there is a critical point because it’s either your death or where you need to stand up and leave to live,” she said. “He almost killed me - suffocated me - I realised he was going to kill me, and I had three children I was responsible for.” Throughout her experience, Lisa spoke of her loss of identity and sense of failure in not being able to appease her husband, an emotion that she said many victims of domestic violence did go through. “He was angry all the time, so trying to really appease him I lost my identity and became very isolated because I had no belief I could really move on; he basically owned everything, he called the shots.” Now, 10 years on, Lisa has re-
built her identity, and is showing others how to make the transformation from a brittle husk to just being you again. She said that the mental trauma of a violent relationship could haunt victims for several months after they had left. “Even though I was seemingly doing fine, the words ‘you’re worthless,’ ‘you’re a hopeless mother,’ that was a story I was telling myself. “I had taken on his words in my mind, and that’s why I’m now reaching out to others because I know the mental trauma that goes on months down the track.” “Once it’s over, you’re rebuilding yourself in your core,” she said. Ms Bonavita, who has a diploma in counselling and has volunteered with the Women’s Information and Referral Exchange, is hosting an event at Seville Community House on Tuesday 4 and Monday 17 July. The ‘survive and thrive’ conversation encourages women to share their stories and mentor each other in a safe space. “To help one another, it's reaching out and recognising that we are a community, and it’s in that community that we are united and that’s where our strength lies ... because we deserve to thrive, it’s our birth right to thrive and not just survive.”

Mourning of the ‘mayor’ By Wendy Williamson If Hoddles Creek had a mayor, it would have been Ted Gramlick. So say many of the people who last month farewelled this much-loved local. Stuart Edward Gramlick, known as ‘Ted’ all through his life, was born to Enid and John Gramlick on 5 November 1944, a brother for John, Phil and Alison. They grew up in the Mitcham area, going to the local schools - and Ted started playing in the junior teams of the local footy club. Ted survived a couple of life-threatening situations in his early days. Once he was bitten by a tiger snake, and as was customary at the time, his mother cut his leg and sucked out the poison. Then he had a brush with a bout of hepatitis after a swarm of bees attacked him. Those experiences apparently encouraged Ted to say to himself, “Life may be short - better do as much good as I can as quickly as I can.” When Ted was 15 and in his Intermediate year at school, he and his siblings suffered the loss of their mother. As the youngest, Ted was looked after initially by his brother Phil in Boronia, then along with his brother John he was fostered by Teresa and Ben Stoker at Miller Homestead at The Basin. Ted joined The Basin’s footy club and played a lot of games with them. Ted took on an electrical apprenticeship, working with Wally Dewer. He married, and his family grew with the birth of a son, Scott, at Kilsyth, and a daughter, Cindy, after a move into a house Ted built on a block at Hoddles Creek. Ted’s work varied over the years, from his start in electrical work, to transport, mechanics in a service sta-
Much-loved local, the late Ted Gramlick. tion and time with the RACV. He was proprietor for many years of District Hire and Sales in Woori Yallock.
What Ted really liked doing, however, was helping others in the community, and he threw himself into work as a volunteer.
He started his brigade involvement with The Basin Fire Brigade and was in at the start of the Hoddles Creek brigade when he moved to the Yarra Val-
ley in the early ’70s. Ted’s 45 years of service to the CFA, including many as Hoddles Creek captain, were recognised with an award. It was noted that in a roundabout way he was also responsible for another award given on the day - a 30 years of service award to brigade secretary Phil Coulson. It was Ted who prompted Phil to join the brigade. Always looking for an opportunity to help his community, Ted was instrumental in establishing the Upper Yarra Community Centre in Yarra Junction, a natural development from his many years of Scout leadership. A community bus was purchased and has proved invaluable to the community over the years. Ted was also heavily involved in the Upper Yarra Draught Horse Festival and the Beenak Cemetery Trust. In summer Ted involved himself in the local cricket club, and in winter the Woori Yallock Football Club. Both had his total commitment. As his family went through the local primary school, he was actively involved as a helper there - and received an award honouring that involvement. Over the years Ted’s health began to fade. He kept active, and a heart bypass operation gave him new energy for a while, but then he needed to slow down as his heart gradually weakened. His sister, Alison, looked after him in her home, where Ted enjoyed looking out at nature, feeding the birds and writing poetry, as he had done throughout his life. Ted passed away on 26 May at the age of 72. He is survived by a large and loving family, including children, grandchildren and one great-granddaughter - and by an appreciative community.

Women step up to the palette By Kath Gannaway Only five per cent of artists hanging in permanent galleries worldwide are women. That’s a statistic that was too challenging to ignore, and which in fact, was inspirational for Warburton writer Lindy Schneider and photographer Angela Rivas. On 1 June, Lindy and Angela launched a Pozible crowd funding campaign to create a book in words and pictures of 14 unique women artists. ‘From This Place - Inspiring Women Artists of The Upper Yarra Valley’ is a project started more than two years ago in what Lindy describes as a moment of shared inspiration. “Both of us had an idea; we were curious as to why we lived among so many talented women artists and we wanted to find out why,” she explained. “We wanted to elevate our fellow artists, to raise their profiles in a world where it is often hard to cut through.” That was where the five per
cent statistic came to light - one of the most telling moments of their research. They took the fact and decided to do something about it, starting in their own beautiful part of the world. Their 14 women include painters and poets, potters and scenographers, sculptors and authors. Artists that have so many layers, that Lindy and Angela say it’s difficult to hold them to any one definition. “These women are important, and their work matters,” Lindy said. The names of many of the featured artists will be familiar to Yarra Valley residents - Belinda Rogers, Sioux Dollman, Marlee Nebauer, Jena Bedson, Maya Ward, Adrienne Kneebone, Kate Baker, Shlomit Moria, Indigo Perry, Gillian Farrow, Lucy Pierce, Jo Rothwell, Jenny Davis and Jeminah Alli Reidy. The project which will launch in September is twofold comprising the hardcover From This Place Book of around 128
pages in full colour, and the From This Place Exhibition The Essence Portraits, featuring 14 large-scale portraits from the ‘essence’ shoot. The exhibition will run for five weeks at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre in Warburton and at the Yarra Valley Regional Museum in Lilydale in December and January. The women are pre-selling copies of the book, and seeking support via the Pozible campaign to create a book that matches the quality of the photographs and the stories. Lindy said with generous support from Yarra Ranges Council and the Warburton and Yarra Junction Community Bank Branches the project had grown beyond their wildest dreams and that they were now reaching out to the wider community. Classical music lovers along the route of cellist Anthony Albrecht’s ‘Bach to Bush’ tour are in for a treat. The mellifluous tones of a quality cello are hard to beat, especially in the hands of an accomplished musician. In his two-hour concerts Albrecht performs selections from J.S. Bach’s stunning suites for solo cello, interspersed with other short, early works for the instrument. He also talks about his life as a musician and why the music he plays is such an invaluable part of our culture. “I endeavour to play the cello as it would have been played in Baroque times,” says Albrecht, who grew up in Newcastle, NSW, and won a prestigious scholarship to participate in the Julliard School’s Historical Performance program. He is currently based in London as a Guildhall School
Transformers: The Last Knight is an interminable slog of a film by Michael Bay, one of Hollywood’s worst directors. The driving conflict, which involves a lazy mash-up of a rogue planet approaching Earth with Arthurian legends, is very vague and progresses with a punishing lack of threat or urgency. Returning from 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, Mark Wahlberg fails to deliver his normally dependable sardonic charisma, helm-
ing a cast of flat, one-note characters. Mediocre popcorn filmmakers like Guy Ritchie, Paul W.S. Anderson and even Zack Snyder have some redeeming qualities in their films, but Michael Bay really is a talentless hack. Bay has always valued grand, explosion-filled spectacle, but he cannot properly structure action in this movie. The battle sequences in The Last Knight are severely cluttered, over-edited and broken up by laboured, out-ofplace gags. Though somewhat toned down from his previous Transformers films, The Last Knight
is still full of Bay’s bad habits: inconsistent tone, lazy stereotypes, blatant objectification of women and hyperactive, unfocused direction. The scant highlights are Sir Anthony Hopkins, who is clearly having a blast as an eccentric scenery-chewing historian, and young actress Isabela Moner’s earnest, starmaking performance as a brave homeless girl. Sloppy and intensely boring, Transformers: The Last Knight may be the worst film of 2017, if only for the fact that I didn’t have to fight to stay awake during Fifty Shades Darker. - Seth Hynes

Seville and Belgrave are still holding onto top spot with Yarra Glen in third, one game behind. Powelltown are only one game behind Yarra Glen in fourth but two wins clear of Alexandra in fifth. Kinglake are still an outside chance to make the final five, one game behind Alexandra. Netball Division 1: Olinda are one and a half games clear of Wandin in top spot and unlikely to lose that position, Wandin are half a game clear of Woori Yallock in third. Monbulk Hawks are two games behind Woori Yallock in fourth with Warburton another game behind in fifth. Division 2: Belgrave have a hold on top spot and are unlikely to drop from that mantle. Burras’ memor y As part of this season’s 50 Year Anniversary Celebrations for the WarburtonMillgrove Football Netball Club (19672016), the Reunion Function for the first decade of the Club, 1967-1976, will be held at the home ground, the Mac Sparke Oval, on Saturday 1 July. Host of medal wins By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Ruffey Lake, Doncaster was the venue for the Eastern Metro Region Cross Country Championships on Saturday. Yarra Ranges Athletics sent an enthusiastic team to the championships which qualifies athletes for the State championships to be held in July. Some outstanding performances from Yarra Ranges club athletes resulted in several individual and team medals. Georgia Laven, Maddie Laven and Kiara Flavel all secured gold
medals, while Indie Linde earned a silver medal and Tiara Willis a bronze in their respective races. Team medals were earned by an excited Under 9 Girls team and the Under 12s Boys teams. Full results will be available online. The next round of Saturday morning cross country will be on Saturday 1 July at Margaret Lewis Reserve. The annual club handicap event is always a lot of fun, so be there early to learn you time advantage. The club welcomes all athletes of any age or ability.
