More works, please Federal cash is "ready and waiting" for a $1 billion upgrade of the Monash Freeway and key arterials in Melbourne’s south-east but the State Government is stalling construction, according to the Federal Member for La Trobe. In a bid to ease the traffic roadblock that is the Monash, the Commonwealth contributed $500 million in April 2016 to the freeway’s upgrade; with the State Government to match that commitment. However, according to the Federal Government, the State is yet to spend the cash, instead using just a small portion of the available funds on a business plan that won’t be finalised until the end of this year.
La Trobe MP Jason Wood has blasted the delay as a strategic plan by the State Government to co-incide the competition of stage two with next year’s election so it could claim responsibility. “They initially called the widening of the Monash a 'bird-brained idea' and now they want to deliver the project in dribs and drabs to suit their political agenda of delivering something by the next State Government election, but the problem is that ‘something’ isn’t looking at the whole problem for us locally,” Mr Wood said. His main concern was that the State’s own upgrades, which he has described as a “half-baked version” of the Commonwealth’s, would hinder, rather than help congestion. The State Government is currently widening the freeway from four to five lanes each way
between the EastLink interchange and South Gippsland Highway, and from two to three lanes in both directions through to Clyde Road, Berwick. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said 200,000 people used the Monash each day and estimated a 10-minute reduction in travel times during peak periods as well as a 20 per cent decrease in serious crashes once works were complete in 2018. However, Mr Wood believed these upgrades would further increase the bottleneck and delays. He instead wanted to see the extension of O’Shea Road to a complete Beaconsfield interchange on the Princes Freeway as well as the widening of the Monash from Warrigal to Cardinia roads, all of which was budgeted for in the Federal Government’s contribution.
The State Government needed to stop “dragging its feet”, he said, arguing that a “real solution” was “urgently needed now”. “Local residents are frustrated that they won’t take the $500 million that’s sitting on the table and actually do the works from Warrigal Road to Clyde Road, complete the Beaconsfield Exchange and extend O’Shea Road properly,” Mr Wood said. “I’m sick of it, and I know our community is sick of it too - enough of the attempts at political point scoring and just give us the solution that’s sitting right in front of us.” Mr Donnellan said the State Government wanted to get on with stage two “as quickly as possible, but we’re going to make sure that we find the right solution to cut congestion on the Monash”.

The Selandra Rise Shopping Centre in Clyde North celebrated two successful years of trading with an Indian cultural festival on Saturday 17 June. The event celebrated the shopping centre’s opening in 2015 with many traditional and modern parts of Indian culture taking centre stage. The shopping centre hosted the president of the Australia India Business Council Rashi Kapoor as well as Prince Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar of the royal house of Mewar in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Along with the esteemed guests, visitors to the centre were treated to raffles, dances and songs, and many other festivities. There was traditional Bharatanatyam dance, modern Bollywood dancing, and an energetic Bangda (Punjabi) dance to finish off the day. Hairdressers here to help By Helena Adeloju With a new program set to be rolled out next month, local hairdressers will be among the newest recruits in the fight to end family violence. According to the lead family violence service in Melbourne’s eastern region, the relationship that hairdressers have with the women they serve can be a valuable tool in identifying, addressing and preventing family violence. Eastern Domestic Violence Services (EDVOS) has developed early intervention training for hairdressers to help women who may be facing violence or controlling behaviour at home. EDVOS executive director Jenny Jackson said the interest in the training program which will be the first of its kind in Australia has been incredible. “We are very excited by the level of interest in the program that will be rolled out from July,” Ms Jackson said. Owner of Opal Hair in Officer, Prue Hendrix recently became aware of the new EDVOS HaiR Program and is keen for her salon to be involved. “Hairdressing is not just a job, it is an emotion and our greatest reward is our clients’ happiness,” Ms Hendrix said. “EDVOS are being positive and proactive with the HaiR Program initiative.” Earlier this month Victoria’s Minister for Women and Minister for Prevention of Family Violence, Fiona Richardson, announced funding of $135,000 for EDVOS to deliver the program for one year. The program is designed to give hairdressers the capacity and confidence to recognise, respond and refer clients. “The HaiR Program helps hairdressers to engage in conversations that challenge gender stereotypes. They can share experiences and recognise the sometimes subtle signs of family violence,” Ms Jackson said. She said the three-hour training program involved talking to hairdresser about what family violence is, what to look for, and explaining to them what their role involved. “When we ran a pilot program late last year hairdressers told us they felt more comfortable knowing what to say and how to say it,” Ms Jackson said. “We’re very clear about the role; it’s not to be a family violence counsellor, or a family violence worker.” Ms Jackson said some of the signs that a woman may be experiencing family violence include women saying they are not allowed to have certain cuts or colours, numerous call or texts

Although physical bruises may be the most obvious tell-tale sign of abuse Ms Jackson said not all forms of family violence were physical. “It’s also about power and control,” Ms Jackson said. “Abuse can be financial, sexual, psychological, emotional or spiritual.” She said the new program will help address the key problem that women who experience family violence expect not to be believed. “Men who are family violence offenders are often very charming and are not violent in other areas of their lives,” Ms Jackson said. “Hairdressers will be able to offer their clients the belief and empathy they need to take action since they are
a safe enough distance to be their confidant.” Ms Jackson said family violence is not by any means a women only issue and the HaiR training program will also enable hairdressers to assist men. “It will help men in the same way,” she said. Ms Jackson said the program was aimed at women because statistics showed women were the victims of family violence more often. “At least one woman is killed every week due to family violence,” Ms Jackson said. She said similar programs were needed to enable the wider community to recognise family violence and to equip people to refer persons using violence or who were the victims of vi-

Mayor has China smarts By Garry Howe Inspired by a recent visit to China, mayor Sam Aziz is committed to making the City of Casey one of the world’s smartest cities within 20 years. Cr Aziz told guests at his annual Business Leaders Dinner at Cranbourne Turf Club on Thursday 15 June that Casey was well placed to be home to Australia’s version of Silicon Valley in the United States or China’s impressive National Science Park. He said Marshall Baillieu’s Minter Farm property in Berwick was ideal for this purpose, having been earmarked as a technological park. The mayor insisted the China trip in April - with council colleague Wayne Smith and two members of Casey’s management staff - was already bringing tangible benefits to the region. He said a letter of intent was signed to form an economic partnership with Dujiangyan City, which goes against the regular convention of having several visits before that step is taken. “This is not all aspirational,” he said. “We are almost in daily contact with China and have committed money to making this relationship happen. “This is about opening up the City of Casey to one of the world’s most dynamic economies.” Dujiangyan City has a population of 652,000 people and has a lot of similarities to Casey, Cr Aziz said. Its mayor will tour Casey in a reciprocal visit later this month. Cr Aziz said China was creating

He described its National Science Park - where the Chinese Government pays 10,000 scientists each day to undertake research and development in a whole range of areas - as “as one of the most remarkable places I have seen on earth”. “It is their version of Silicon Valley in the US,” Cr Aziz explained. “They are aiming to improve the lives of people through technology, tapping in to every aspect of human endeavour where innovation can occur. “We want to bring this kind of development to the heart of Casey. “Some of the jobs that exist now won’t exist 20 years from now and
some of the jobs that will exist in 20 years’ time we don’t know about now.” Cr Aziz said Casey was committed to becoming a “smart city” within one or two decades - one that has traffic control without traffic lights, using driverless vehicle technology, and where rubbish bins self-regulate the waste. “It was remarkable to travel around Dujiangyan City and not experience the traffic congestion I do on Clyde Road each day,” he said. “Despite the high population, there is very limited traffic congestion in China.” Cr Aziz said Casey had already taken steps towards this aim, having digitalised 14 council services. Gateway peace plan By Cam Lucadou-Wells A developer has stated its “intention” of reinstating the Berwick Springs estate’s bluestone wall gateway as part of its controversial roundabout upgrade. In a recently-released application to Casey Council, developer Moremac Property Group stated it “opted” not to submit elevation plans for the reconstructed gateway at the Greaves Road and Berwick Springs Promenade intersection. That was because it was “seeking” to reinstate the entry features “as currently constructed”. “Our intention is to utilise/re-use
the signage and/or bluestone components where possible and beautify the area as per the submitted landscape plans.” The project, which will bulldoze the landscaped entry to make way for a widened roundabout, has come under heavy opposition from Berwick Springs residents. Residents’ spokesman Michael Ball was concerned about the proposal for a single 1.2-metre wall in place of the current multi-level design - despite Casey mayor Sam Aziz pledging a full reinstatement at an “equivalent or superior” standard. Mr Ball said the proposal fell
short of these “minimal standards”; Casey’s request for a $50,000 developer contribution had also “completely underfunded” the entry reinstatement. “It does concern me that $50,000 has only been allocated. “I think I know what the final outcome will be. Hopefully I am wrong.” Mr Ball also objected to the “unforgivable” public consultation and the “lack of respect” given to 3000 affected residents. Casey planning and infrastructure strategic director Peter Fitchett told a council meeting on 20 June that the proposal’s final design had
not yet been approved by the council. It was still subject to a community submission process, including an information session on 21 June. Moremac is widening the roundabout to pave the way for Alira housing estate to be built north of Greaves Road. The estimated $3.6 million roundabout will also connect to an extension of Ward Road, add pedestrian lights across Greaves Road and provide links to land north of Hallam Valley Contour Drain. Objections to the project close on 7 July.

Cranbourne West’s Hoseah Partsch has made The Voice’s top eight singers. The 18-year-old will compete in the Channel Nine talent contest’s semi-finals on Sunday 25 June. “Thank you to everyone around Australia and NZ and everyone around the world for the support and keeping me safe for another week,” he wrote on his Facebook page. A young Hampton Park man has lost his wheels for a month after being caught allegedly speeding and drink driving in Mulgrave. Police said the 21-year-old man was clocked driving at 177 km/h in a 100km/h zone on Jacksons Road early on the morning of Tuesday 20 June. He was then taken to Dandenong Police Station where he returned an evidentiary breath test of .087 per cent. He is expected to be charged on summons with driving at a dangerous speed and drink driving. The man’s BMW has been impounded for 30 days at a cost of $895.50 to the driver.

Re: Casey Council's (proposed) $100,000 donation to St John of God Hospital. I am appalled that this issue is under “consideration” and even up for debate! What needs to be debated? Yes, no doubt there will be patients from outside the City of Casey using the facilities, and rightly so, but will they not also be bringing revenue to the city? Friends and family will shop, lunch etc in the area when visiting or while patients receive treatment. You are in the process of spending $125 million on the Bunjil Place Cultural Centre and have discussed $50,000 on a Christmas tree and Nativity scene. I’m sure these facilities will also be enjoyed by visitors from outside the City of Casey, also creating revenue! Here’s a newsflash for you - only those of us blessed with good health will be able to use Bunjil Place, the rest would greatly appreciate the services of a state of the art hospital within easy access. Prompt excising of carcinomas Squamous cell carcinomas are the second most common skin cancers in Australia after basal cell carcinomas, according to Dr Mike Inskip at Berwick’s Sun Patrol Clinic. They appear on the sun-damaged skin of people over 40, and are particularly common on the scalp of bald men, on the back of hands and forearms and legs in those who wear shorts, Dr Inskip said. They present as hard, tender lumps or ulcers and can grow very quickly, sometimes over a matter of weeks. Dr Inskip said they required prompt, complete excision as these cancers were capable of spreading into the lymphatic system and blood stream. “A small number of more aggressive squamous cell carcinomas need radiotherapy in addition to surgical excision,” Dr Inskip said.

An apple a day to keep doctor at bay This is Bowel Cancer Month an initiative strongly supported by St John of God Berwick Hospital each year. Through its annual Red Apple Day on 21 June, Bowel Cancer Australia encourages people to support its work through the purchase of a Bowel Cancer Awareness ribbon or by running apple themed fundraising activities. Through the generous donation of apples from local grower Montague Fresh, St John of God Berwick Hospital hosts a fundraising day each year where visitors and caregivers are encouraged to give a gold coin donation in exchange for a fresh Jazz apple. The event not only helps to raise much needed funds for the association, it also aims to promote awareness around bowel cancer in the hope that early detection will reduce the number of new cases being diagnosed each year. Although bowel cancer is one of the most treatable types of cancer with 90 per cent of cases being curable if caught early enough, it still continues to be one of the biggest killers which claims the lives of 80 Australians each week due to low early detection rates. Also called colorectal cancer, bowel cancer affects both

Top VCAL results delivered By Cam Lucadou-Wells Narre Warren South P-12 College’s high-achieving VCAL program has been awarded a prestigious statewide prize. The college received the VCL Chair’s Award for outstanding achievement in delivering its program. Principal Rob Duncan told the awards ceremony at Federation Square on 26 May that the program was his greatest professional joy. For many of the students, it was the first time that school “made sense”. And many have not turned back from that point, nurtured on a “positive culture of success”. Since 2006, there have been 1977 graduates. From those, six are now employed at the school
as a youth worker, a multi-cultural aide, a Registered Training Organisation manager, an ensemble director, a voice teacher, an attendance officer and a wellbeing receptionist. Other graduates have gone onto nursing, policing, IT, masters degrees, child protection, tradies and other diverse vocations. Mr Duncan praised his VCAL team, especially Kelly Lackmann who has received five VCAL teaching awards and led the program with “amazing enthusiasm and great care for every student”. “There’s no question that her hard work, passion and belief that all students can achieve positive educational outcomes has made our program what it is.”
The award was presented by Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Narre Warren North MP Judith Couacaud Graley. “Their exemplary program has gone from strength to strength over the past 11 years and I know so many students who have gone on to great careers thanks to their time in this program,” Ms Graley said. Students from the school’s VCAL Foundation Team received a team achievement award for the school’s vertical wall garden project. More than 30 kilograms of the garden’s vegetables had been donated to OzHarvest to feed homeless people across Melbourne. It was the 20th team achievement award won by the school’s VCAL students.

It seems nothing is beyond saving from landfill at Nossal High School’s recycling wall. The school’s NEST (Nossal Environmental Sustainability Team) led by teacher Jessica Ball has set up a wall that collects disused batteries, mobile phones, pens, pencils and markers, toothcare and beauty products and crushable supermarket bags. It is part of the team’s 18-month campaign to make waste less of a mountain, and more of a molehill. Last year, the school saved 40 cubic metres of
waste and reduced its printing paper usage by 15 per cent as a result of NEST initiatives. In September, the team ran a sustainability summit inspiring 100 participants from 10 schools to take leadership on the issue. Less than a 45-litre bin of waste-to-landfill was created during the forum. NEST aims for zero-waste at the next forum in September. Further, the team has earned three ResourceSmart Schools stars, raised awareness about recycling and created a new compost system for the school. The team also aims to plant 300 trees in an hour for School Tree Day this year.

Francis P. Facey was a carriage builder in Dandenong in the early 1900s and yet he was so inspired by the potential for future growth in the district that he opened Frank Facey Real Estate in 1917. In commemoration of the one hundred
successful years that followed, we continue now, to note the significant points in history, and the chief personalities involved, in the success of this remarkable company. While it wasn’t always plain sailing, the popularity of the region gathered momentum and by 1992 Frank Facey First National Real Estate had opened offices in Dandenong, Narre Warren and Mulgrave. Drawing on local knowledge and experience, these offices were able to facilitate important land and residential sales throughout the area. They also provided much needed
advice for new developers who were previously unfamiliar with the opportunities now available in the region. Andrew Facey (third generation) made a significant decision in 1992 to form a specialist industrial and commercial business. He decided to sell the Frank Facey Dandenong residential business to Michael Hall. The industrial side of the business then became Facey Industrial-Commercial with Andrew Facey, Graham Kendall and Terry O’Dea at the helm. Andrew Facey retained his partnership with John Archibald in the Narre Warren office. These were exceptionally busy times and both the residential and the industrial side of the business thrived. Also during 1992, Michael Hall (Frank Facey First National Dandenong) along with Garry Masters opened an office in Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre. Mulgrave was now experiencing a surge in growth and Frank Facey First National continued the tradition of being in the right place at the right time. By 1994 Michael Hall, together with Peter Curtis, expanded the business further when they opened another office,
this time in the Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre. As more and more people were attracted to the south-eastern region, Frank Facey First National Real Estate positioned its offices strategically throughout the area, ensuring a comprehensive stronghold within the real estate community. As predicted by Francis P. Facey back in the early 1900s, the rolling green hills and broad acre farmlands provided the perfect opportunity for an expanding population. Given my bias is towards the building industry specifically, I am going to discuss with you the things to look out for with builders and the various questions to ask to ensure you are getting the best value deal for the most affordable price possible. First home buyers make up the demographic that is the most commonly underrepresented in the market and, unfortunately, the segment which is most taken advantage of. Our industry has developed a bit of a used car salesman type of reputation. Most of it is unfounded - some bad experiences for some don’t equate for others (this goes for all builders). The first piece of advice I have is to not be seduced on price. If you are low balling builders on price, expect a cheap product lacking quality and finishes. You buy a brand-new car from a reputable brand because of its perceived quality so why would you compromise your home for price? It is something I will never understand, but I am never short of amazed how people believe they are getting a better deal at a cheap price. If you are going to be seduced on price point, the odds are going to be heavily
weighted against you in terms of inclusions. To start with most builders advertising a low price point are going to skimp on site cost allowances which means a provisional allowance for site extras after you sign your build contract. Once they complete full soil investigations, nine times out of 10 you will be hit with some sort of site cost variation. Those of you who intend to build in the south-eastern suburbs should be mindful that the usual requirement for site classifications is an H class slab. Almost every builder allows for only an M class so you will be looking at a minimum of $5000 in extras before you have discussed what is allowed inside (or more to the point, what is not allowed inside) your home. Sticking with the external inclusions (or exclusions), be mindful there is no point in building a house without a driveway included. Concrete is expensive and builders get their cube rate supplied at a much lower rate than what a subcontracted concreter is going to charge the general public. Secondly, most land estates these days require you to have a concrete driveway installed prior to occupation of the home. Bank finance is still relatively cheap so it is important to include these items in your build contract - it won’t affect your repayment by any more than $5 per week!

The Pakenham Warriors’ Big V Division 2 men’s basketballers are closing in on top spot on the ladder after a commanding 23-point win over the Giants in Coburg on Saturday night, 83-60. The home side led by nine points, 23-14, after the first term with the shorthanded Warriors looking somewhat sluggish on defense at the outset. The Giants were up and about in front of their home crowd - getting the looks they wanted while, by contrast, the Warriors seemed to settle for outside jumpers. But in the second period the visitors were sparked to life thanks to some outstanding plays on both ends of the floor from tough-minded guards Mike Godfrey (10 points, 3 boards, 2 steals) and Craig Drew (2 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists).
Putting their bodies on the line, the pair had far more of an impact than the box score would suggest with Drew’s activity around the offensive glass and Godfrey’s willingness to continually put his body on the line to draw charges. The Warriors roared back into the contest thanks to big man Brad Bridgewater, who made the Giants’ front line seem anything but giant; captain Ben Gaze (14 points, 6 assists, 3 steals); and Nick Ross (16 points). Brad Szalek, Cody Fredrickson (13 points), and Trent Lee were also instrumental but Bridgewater was virtually unstoppable down low - finishing with 22 points on 11 of 14 shooting and 10 boards - six of those on the offensive end. Pakenham turned its slow start around to lead by three, 36-33, at
the half and the championship mentality that coach Brent Russell had been preaching all season had clearly come to the fore once again. At the break he warned about the fake hand-offs and backdoor layups that Coburg’s George Drakopoulos (10 points on 50 per cent shooting, 4 boards, and 4 steals) had been benefiting from but was encouraged by Pakenham’s tighter defensive effort. The Warriors had their noses in front in the rebounding and turnover numbers and continued in the third where they’d left off. After Coburg recaptured the lead at 37-36, the Warriors went on a tear - finishing the term with a 12-point lead, 58-46. An emphatic effort through the opening minutes of the fourth ensured the Warriors came away with a crucial away win from
a stadium where they’ve got a mixed recent record. The win was ignited by its defence and the brand of basketball it displayed is one that will hold it in good stead come playoff time. On Sunday, in a double-header at ‘The Colosseum’ at Cardinia Life, the Warriors’ Division 2 Youth League Men trounced Warrnambool by 35 points, 8651, off the back of 17 points from Tyrone Tonkin, 12 points and 7 boards from Lee Belton, and 14 boards from Matt Berkec; while Darren Thomas’ Youth League women came away with a narrow four-point win, 59-55, thanks to another near triple-double from Ellie Coutts (7 points, 7 boards, and 10 steals), 12 points apiece from Emily Patterson and Sarah Thomson, and a perfect performance from the field by Tiarni Fallon (11 points).

The Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club (DWCC) and the Dandenong Cricket Club (DCC) have announced that Special Resolutions were voted through unanimously by members of both clubs on 19 June at the club’s AGM, meaning the two entities will progress forward as a single club from 1 July. A proposed merger was first brought forward in mid-May, with the representatives from both clubs working diligently over the last month to come up with a proposal that satisfied all parties. The merged entity will keep the name Dandenong Cricket Club (DCC) and will maintain the panther mascot. However, a new logo is planned to integrate some aspect of the DWCC brand and representatives from both clubs have been buoyed by the overwhelming support of members in working with a ‘one club’ approach. “It has been fantastic to see how everyone involved has worked together and shown a real respect for both the history of both clubs and the vision we are working toward for the future,” the DWCC’s Kelly Applebee said. Applebee will take up the position of Vice President for the new DCC and will be joined by both Emma Gallagher and parent Shahid Malik from DWCC on the new committee. ’Pies late rally brings it By David Nagel Arch rivals Narre Warren and Doveton combined to produce something special at Kalora Park on Saturday with the Magpies riding a 10-goal last quarter to a 45-point, 19.17(131) to 13.8(86), victory to keep their top-three hopes alive. The final margin flattered the home side, who had to fight hard -in both a football and physical sense- to shake off a brave challenge from an undermanned but very proud Doves outfit. Scores were locked -86 all- at the 13-minute mark of the final term before the Magpies piled on seven unanswered goals to run away from the weary visitors. This was local football at its finest -and also its toughest. Four yellow cards were handed out in the final term alone, added to that of Trent Cody’s in the second quarter, on a day where there was no place for the faint-hearted. Narre Warren skipper Dylan Quirk conceded it was a very tough day at the office. “Yeah it was, it was probably back to the Narre-Doveton days of old, probably 10 years ago when we were the best two sides fighting it out for the flag,” Quirk said after the match.
“Days like this were probably the norm back then I guess.” The Magpies wasted early opportunities, kicking 4.7 to 2.0 in the opening term on a perfect day where the wind had very little impact. The Doves fought back brilliantly, kicking 9.7 to 5.5 through the middle stages of the match to open up a seven-point lead at the final change. Taylor Joyce extended the margin to 13, just 45 seconds into the final term, before the Magpies took control. Aaron Wilson dribbled one through from close range; Quirk kicked a long bomb from outside 50, before Nick Scanlon converted a spectacular mark at the top of the goal-square. Dean Kelly then broke the deadlock at the 17-minute mark, before a brilliant running goal from Cody saw a massive roar erupt from the packed Narre Warren members' area. A stunning soccer-goal from Stewie Scanlon then stretched the margin to 20 to break the Doves’ fighting spirit for good. Gulls regain composure to pip Wickers By David Nagel A vastly improved Berwick almost caused the upset of the season on Saturday pushing flag favourite Tooradin-Dalmore to its absolute limit at Westernport Oval. The Seagulls would eventually prevail 47-44, but the final score only tells part of the story. The Seagulls success this season has relied heavily on the input of several high-quality VNL stars - players missing on Saturday due to their call to the higher level. The absence of stars like Jess Cox, Sara Duncan and the Maher girls, Alex and Jess, left the Seagulls vulnerable against a Berwick side that had won two of their last three games. The Wickers produced some sparkling netball in the first quarter, catching the Gulls off guard with some brilliant play from midcourters Olivia Macente (centre), Emily Pratt (wing attack) and Sarah Nash (wing defence) and some quality finishing from a redhot Itagia Amataga (goal shooter). The Wickers raced to a 17-10 lead at quarter time. “To concede 17 goals in a quarter was way too many, and there were no excuses, Berwick was just stronger and more physical than us,” said Tooradin coach Kelly Andrews. Andrews made some key changes at quarter time, adding Stacey Sawyer (WA) to a midcourt combination that included Shona Wells (WD) and Emma Iacovou (C). Wells’ determination to shut down the attacking flair of Pratt played a key part in the turnaround. The Seagulls slowly regained momentum, closing to four at half time before locking the scores away at 35 each at the final break. The Seagulls claimed a gutsy victory with a 12-9 final term. in brilliant fashion with Chloe Phillips (goal shooter) and Kealeigh Brown (goal attack) on the receiving end of some wonderful passing from Leigh Taylor (C) and Britt Mashado (WA). The game blew out as the afternoon wore on, the Magpies increasing their margin from 13 to 21 by half time, stretching it out to 38 by the final break before being content with a 44-goal victory by the final whistle. The Magpies basically locked up a top-three position with the victory. Cranbourne has jumped to fourth place on the ladder after working hard for its 51-35 victory over bottom-side Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve. The Eagles were pushed by the fired-up Lions who welcomed back superstar midcourter Meaghan Winter (C) for her first game for the season. The Eagles played their best netball in the second quarter, Tegan Stahl (GA) and Alanah Hardy (GS) sharing the load in the ring, with Tara Cecil (GK) and Hailey Galpin (goal defence) really tight in defence. The Eagles led by nine at the middle break and despite a brave third-quarter comeback from the likes of Jenna Douglas (C) and Christine Meyer (GS) held the Lions at bay. And Beaconsfield has posted its highest score for the season with a 71-44 victory over ROC at Starling Road. The Eagles were a little rusty after two weeks on the sidelines, but still took a 15-13 lead into quarter time. They would build their lead to seven at half time before producing an amazing 22 to 10 third quarter. The Kangaroos tried to stick with the Eagles, but class told the story in the second half. Jasmine Jones, Ash Gill, Kate Murphy and Rylee Nelson shared the midcourt duties while Emily Boribon, Bianca Sanzaro and Tanya Mijovic got the job done in the attacking ring.

Yaris’s French connection By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Safety and style, it appears Toyota is covering all bases with its revised light passenger vehicle, the Yaris hatchback. It has class-leading safety systems available across the range and is clothed in an interesting shape from the Toyota ED2 design studio in the south of France. The result is premium safety that’s standard on the top-of-the-range Yaris ZR we drove, and a $650 option on the Ascent and mid-range SX variants. Yaris hatches are well equipped, featuring cruise control, a display audio system with controls on the steering wheel spokes, a multi-information display, air-conditioning, electric power steering, power windows and mirrors and a 12-volt accessory socket. Despite styling improvements, the starting price stays at $15,290, plus on road costs, for the Ascent and an unchanged $17,330 for the SX, with the option of automatic transmission remaining at $1530. The new auto-only ZR price of $22,470 reflects the addition of the safety equipment. The French connection placed a greater emphasis on horizontal lines to express a wide, more planted stance and low centre of gravity. This was done with a new front bumper mimicking a catamaran with broad sections flowing down from new headlights, flanking the wide, trapezoidal grille.

With style upgrades all round, the Toyota Yaris shapes up to continue its success in the small-car segment. The new grille contributes to the Yaris's more steadfast appearance with stepped horizontal bars delivering a 3-D effect. Fog lamps on the ZR are packed in a more compact recess with a vertical line that follows the outer edge of the bumper and features a bright chrome trim detail. New headlamps include a forked frame around the main lamp that flows seamlessly into a single line extending in a matching chrome trim element towards the central Toyota emblem. The ZR rolls on 16-inch alloy wheels with silver finish, while the catamaran styling is repeated at the rear
with a new bumper design that harmonises with the lines of the tailgate and extends to side reflectors separated by a lower bumper garnish. A rear spoiler and automatic levelling head lamps top and tail the Yaris upgrades. The cabin has also been freshened with gloss black ornamentation replacing the silver highlights on the steering wheel, audio unit surround and around the gear-knob base. Toyota Yaris SX variants, in addition to the bigger engine, are equipped with rear and rear side privacy glass,
and a premium steering wheel and gear-lever, while premium features fitted to the ZR include automatic climate control air-conditioning, satellite navigation, plus Toyota Link internet connectivity. The 1.5-litre engine fitted to the SX and ZR delivers maximum power of 80kW at 6000rpm and top torque of 141Nm at 4400 revs and is mated with a four-speed automatic transmission. It is now rated at Euro 5 for emissions. Every model in the Australian Toyota Yaris range has seven airbags, a reversing camera, vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes with
electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and an emergency brake signal that flashes the hazard lights. The premium safety system, standard on ZR, consists of a pre-collision system, lane departure alert and auto beam headlights. The pre-collision system monitors the road ahead, warning the driver of an imminent collision risk and readies the brakes for maximum operation when the brake pedal is pressed. If the driver fails to respond to the warning, the system will trigger autonomous emergency braking to slow the car to reduce the severity of any impact. Lane departure alert looks out for lane markings. If the Yaris begins to deviate from its lane without the turn indicators being used, the system alerts the driver with visual and audible warnings. Since taking over the small-car mantle from the Toyota Echo in 2005, the Yaris has led the light-car segment in four years and has been runner-up five times.
