Surrounded by ash and shattered glass, Thida Lim looks over the damage to the cafe following the fire at the weekend. “I was shocked and completely devastated,” Ms Lim said. “It was clear the people who did this were looking for money. She said every drawer was open and the tips jar was gone. Heritage Springs Centre Management issued a statement on Tuesday 13 June thanking emergency services for the “fast response and professional service.”
“The incident comes as a deep shock,” the statement read. “We would like to assure the community that the Shopping Centre, excluding Heritage Springs Cafe, is business as usual.” Ms Lim said the assessment for restoration work began soon after the incident, with repairs scheduled to begin immediately. In the meantime Ms Lim is in the
process of organising a coffee cart so she can at provide customers with coffee at the Shopping Centre during the cafe’s temporary absence. “Hopefully we will be serving coffee in the next few days, but we will really need the community’s support when we re-open,” she said. The Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon CFA crews attended to fight the initial fire and helped to clean up the area in the aftermath.
Police have advised people to go about their usual business at the Heritage Springs Shopping Centre, saying they are carrying out “reassurance patrols“ in the area. Investigators believe a dark coloured sedan, possibly a Ford Falcon, may have been involved. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Thida Lim has been overwhelmed by the community support she has been shown in the days following the firebomb attack on her cafe at Heritage Springs Shopping Centre. “Two hundred mums from the Heritage Spring Primary school came here yesterday to comfort me,” she said. “There were lots of cuddles and hugs. I was so overwhelmed with emotion that I cried.” Thida and her husband Kim moved to Heritage Springs almost four years ago when they bought the Heritage Springs Cafe, and since then they have become much-loved members of the community. Now, with the cafe out of action until repairs are complete, Ms Lim is worried about how she is going to pay bills and put food on the table. “I’ll have to look for a job to cover our everyday expenses,” Ms Lim said. “Our insurance is only going to cover contents, but they won’t be covering lost income or the rent.” Ms Lim is still struggling to comprehend why her business was targeted. “Why would people do something like this?” she said. Police are continuing their investigations into the fire, which has left the cafe’s interior charred and windows shattered. Three men were captured on the CCTV vision from the Chemist Warehouse opposite, entering the premises. Once inside they are believed to have sprayed accelerant throughout the shop, and set it alight just before 2.30am on Sunday 11 June. When Ms Lim arrived to open at about 7.15am she found her premises cordoned off by police who told her the shopping centre would not open until further notice. She said nothing prepared her for what she saw when the police arson squad gave the all-clear about 1pm and allowed her inside.

Car enthusiasts raising money for a good cause are struggling to find a meeting place in Narre Warren. It could be at least partly due to being unfairly tarred by the notorious hoon meets known for their illegal drifts, drags and burnouts, South Eastern Chrome Bumpers organiser Paul Ryan says. The meets had been held at the former Masters store in Pakenham for two years without incident, raising more than $26,000 for Toomuc CFA and the Good Friday Appeal. “We’ve never had a problem with hooning,” Mr Ryan said. “(The illegal drags) gives us all a bad name. “There’s a lot of younger ones getting into our meets, and we’re getting them into a better type of car scene. “Our passion is our cars and having a great social event for people to meet, chat, drink coffee and have a bite to eat.” Its members have also provided joy rides for children at an ABLE Australia for the Deaf Blind Awareness Week, and helped raise money for Steps for Keira Foundation and other great causes. With a Facebook following of nearly 10,000, there’s no shortage of interest for the assembly of immaculate classic and vintage vehicles. Mr Ryan, who owns a stunning red 1968 Comaro coupe, says up to 500 specimens of cars have shown up. Since Masters’ closure, finding a well-lit car park large enough to accommodate hundreds of drivers and spectators is a further challenge. The Bumpers have met once in a section of Bunnings car park in Narre Warren on a recent Friday night. On that occasion, $1500 was raised for the Narre Warren North CFA. However the venue was too crowded

Union hits at cuts By Cam Lucadou-Wells A modest protest against an alleged $13.6 million of Gonski-funding cuts from local schools was held outside La Trobe MP Jason Wood’s office on 8 June. In gloomy weather, a handful of school staff showed up for the Australian Education Union protest, carrying placards counting the estimated cost to individual schools in 2018-'19 and 2019-'20. The toll would be $11 million at Berwick College, $1 million at Kambrya College and $500,000 at Berwick Fields Primary School. AEU vice-president Briley Duncan said Gonski’s deliverance of extra resources for local schools was under threat in the next two years. It would mean that students needing extra support at schools will miss out, she said. The Federal Government’s review of a needs-based funding formula was labelled as “smoke and mirrors”. “It’s a review without looking at the quantum of funding needed. It’s a diversion tactic,” Ms Duncan said. “We’re calling for a commitment for Gonski to be honoured.” The AEU has been targeting marginal seats such as Mr Wood’s, as well as leading delegations of teachers and principals to lobby at Parliament House in Canberra. Mr Wood did not respond by deadline. But in the face of a protest in March, Mr Wood said the government was trying to fix 27 different Gonski “deals” across the country which were a “corruption” of the Gonski report author’s needs-based recommendations. “There have not been, nor will

Works have started on a widening upgrade of Narre Warren North Road - which has kept horse riders in mind. In a $4.2 million upgrade, traffic lights and pedestrian signals will be added to a ‘black spot’ intersection at Narre Warren North and Fox roads. There have been five injury crashes, including a serious injury, at the intersection in the five-year period up to the end of 2014. The pedestrian crossing will feature highmounted push-buttons for the region’s many horse riders. Narre Warren North Road will also be widened between Ernst Wanke Road and near Brundett Road. A left-turn lane will be built from Crawley Road onto Narre Warren North Road. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan, who is also Roads Minister, said the project would reduce delays and improve safety. “Our community is blessed with fantastic horse riding trails. “This upgrade will make it safer and easier for horse riders, pedestrians and drivers to navigate this busy intersection. ” The upgrade is part of an $11.2 million package including an improved intersection at Narre Warren North and Belgrave-Hallam roads, better freeway noise walls at Endeavour Hills and rightturn signals at Princes Highway, Fitzgerald Road and Hinrichsen Drive. The works are expected to finish late this year.

Casey child, youth and family services manager Virginia Lloyd said the council was in a “fortunate position” to provide every registered family a place at a kinder within the municipality.

Parents’ plans are up in the air after Casey Council announced a new “randomised” priority system to access its kindergartens in 2018. A Berwick mother, who didn’t wish to be named, said she’d registered her son soon after his birth to ensure his enrolment at their neighbourhood kindergarten. Now his placement may be up to “randomised” selection. The mother said a zone that allowed families to attend their closest kindergarten would be fairer. “We want to go to a kindergarten where we live. The primary schools are zoned, so why not the kindergartens?” The new system may force families into long peak-hour drives to more distant kinders, or into more expensive, private child care, she said. Under the new access system, kindergarten allocation will no longer be on a first-in basis nor decided by the child’s geographic proximity. Preference is given to high priority children, such as those at risk of abuse or neglect, those with special needs, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, and asylum seeker and refugee children. Children that are not on the highpriority list may be then in a “randomised allocation” lottery for a spot if their preferred kindergarten is oversubscribed. According to Casey, the allocation is driven by the family’s “listed preferred kindergartens”. When Casey announced the priority system on Facebook, more than 300 commented - mainly in opposition. An extremely expensive Bunjil Christmas ... I am not disputing council’s ideas in re-inforcing and supporting the spirit of Christmas throughout Casey. I do however have serious concerns in what I see as excessive expenditure on achieving this goal! If my reading of the figures supplied (Berwick News, 8 June) is correct then spending around $184,000 to achieve this is, I believe, an unnecessary burden on ratepayers. There is slight discrepancy between Cr Crestani’s assertion that the life-size nativity scene could be sourced for around $100 and the council estimate of around $50,000 plus a further $58,000 for a made-to-order Christmas tree including associated costs and all of this on top of the existing $76,000 annual cost. It’s very easy to spend someone else’s money councillors, in this case part of my council rates. And yes councillors, I do realise that both the nativity scene and the tree are re-usable. The news that Casey Council was bringing back Christmas at Bunjil Place - at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars for a bespoke Christmas tree and nativity scene - drew a sharp Facebook response from News readers. George a man of the times By Victoria Stone-Meadows Former business tycoon and Botanic Ridge resident George Frew has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) this Queen’s Birthday for his services in historic restoration. Mr Frew has a long history of being involved in the preservation of history. He has been recognised for his work raising money to restore the Polly Woodside sailing ship and saving the Goldsbrough Mort building in Melbourne’s CBD. Mr Frew was the founder and builder of the Commodore Hotel and Motel Chain in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. He did not have a maritime background and confesses to knowing very little about ships and sailing. But that did not stop him from working hard to raise the funds to restore the Polly Woodside. Mr Frew was approached by Dr Graeme Robertson of the National Trust of Australia to help with fundraising. The restoration of the Polly Woodside would cost $300,000 which is equivalent to $3.3 million in 2017 with the government contributing $200,000 to the project. Mr Frew came up with a genius idea of how to raise the remaining $100,000 needed to restore the ship. He was unsure he wanted to commit to being involved in such a project, but it was an interaction with a passerby when he first saw the ship that changed his mind. “Doc Robertson from the National Trust and I went out to see the ship,” he said. “I remember when I looked off the bridge I thought ‘what a mess’; it was devoid of sails and not sailing anywhere.”

When I was up there I thought it was pretty solid, but still thought it was a flight of fancy trying to restore it,” he said. “That was when a woman walked down below and called out saying we should ‘take it out to the middle of the bay and sink it’.” “My blood rose. Fancy someone making a comment like that.”
Thanks to the throwaway comment from this woman, Mr Frew’s determination came to the fore and he dedicated himself to making sure the Polly Woodside would be refurbished. “That was the decision-maker; I was irate and thought to myself it wouldn’t be impossible to restore.” It was from there that Mr Frew decided his fund-raising efforts should centre on the kinds of people that really cared about restoring and preserving history. So he decided he would raise money for the Polly Woodside directly from the members of the National Trust of Australia.
Mr Frew had made 1170 small models of the Polly Woodside and what she would look like once restored and sold them at $100 each to the members of the National Trust. Each model ship had a personalised plaque that recognised the buyer of the ship as a contributor to the resurrection of the Polly Woodside. “We sold so many gifts people were being shamed by other members to contribute to the Polly Woodside,” Mr Frew said. “Once we raised the money it went straight to the National Trust and the balance of the money was raised by the State Government.”
Mr Frew has also been recognised with an OAM for his preservation of the Goldsbrough Mort building that sits at the corner of Bourke and William Streets in Melbourne. The building had been used by various companies when Mr Frew purchased it in the late 1970s, and was in a state of disrepair. “It was a terrible mess,” he said. “There was refuse from storage in the rooms for what was then a telephone company and there was stuff everywhere.” After purchasing the building, Mr Frew said he and his crews removed about 100 tonnes of rubbish from the building. “We then had to design the interior and undertake restoration of it, which with the help from the Melbourne Council took about three years.” Mr Frew said he had fond memories of the times he spent working on the Goldsbrough Mort building. “It’s a magnificent building and renovating then in the city was nothing new to me and it proved to be a very worthwhile doing.” Among other historic achievements, Mr Frew rescued the gigantic chandelier from the Regent Theatre when it was scheduled for demolition, then gifted it back to the new owner once it had been saved. Throughout all these tasks and undertakings to preserve important parts of Melbourne’s history, Mr Frew said he hadn’t done it for the recognition. “In one sense, I can’t help but say throughout all these things no-one has given me much recognition,” he said. “But that’s just life - I feel grateful that somebody has said this is not right and decided to give me this honour, and that’s more than good enough for me.” 12352366-CG23-17

Council push for joint use By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Council has altered recommendations council officers put forward, in a bid use the indoor basketball/netball courts at Cranbourne Secondary College for the community. The officers' report noted it would be premature for the council to enter into a joint use agreement with the school while the development of the former Casey Indoor Leisure Centre was underway. However, Councillor Amanda Stapledon opposed recommendations from council officers and put forward an alternative recommendation at
a recent council meeting. At the council meeting on Tuesday 6 June, Cr Stapledon put forward an alternative recommendation that council hold an urgent meeting to discuss joint use of the court. “Council officers didn’t seem to know that the school has attempted to get help from Casey several times since 2012 to upgrade the floor and toilets, though not recently,” she said. “The report shows a forecast shortfall of basketball and netball courts and it seems logical that the new Casey Stadium alone won’t meet the demand.” Councillor Wayne Smith
supported Cr Stapledon’s alternative recommendation, saying it was unwise to wait for the development to be finished before entering into the agreement. “Why wait for 12 months to see what happens?” Cr Smith asked. “It’s clear that the current basketball and netball needs aren’t going to be met by Casey Stadium and the Cranbourne Secondary College opportunity is cheaper than building two courts from scratch.” Casey Council CEO Mike Tyler was hesitant to support the new recommendation, cit-
ing cost to council as a concern of any joint use agreement. Mr Tyler wondered why Casey Council would be required to fund this project when it was already funding Casey Stadium up the road. He suggested councillors wait and see what happened after Casey Stadium opened. However, a majority of councillors passed the new recommendation that will see interested councillors and the principal of Cranbourne Secondary College, Mr John Jovic and Susan Bergman meet to discuss moving forward with the agreement.

Choose your water bill By Victoria Stone-Meadows South East Water has launched a new project that will allow water customers from all over the South East have a say in how their water is charged in the future. The new online bill simulator gives customers a chance to have a say in what initiatives and services the water company pursues and at what costs. Customers of South East Water can log into the bill simulator online and tell the company what services they are or are not willing to pay for as part of their regular water bills. The simulated bills will not affect current water bills, but will form part of a new billing direction for South East Water from 2018 to 2023. The new bill simulator forms part of wider customer services reforms within the company that has included surveys, focus groups, online forums, and social media engagement. The results from these initiatives show that South East Water customers are happy to pay more on their bills for environmental initiatives, support for customers struggling to pay, and fault response times. Data collected through the bill simulator as of 5 June shows some emerging trends among South East Water customers: * 30 per cent people would pay an extra $2.50 or more to assist South East Water in achieving next zero carbon emissions by 2025 or sooner. * A third of customers are prepared to pay $6 or more for technology to alert them about water leaks or unusually high water use and provide access to real time water use information. * One in five people would pay an extra $2 or more to increase community education on water efficiency. South East Water Acting Customer General Manager Sharon Robinson said the bill simulator would give the company a clear picture of what people want from their water supplier. “Customers have made it clear what they value most from their water utility,” she said. “Now they can help us direct our focus based on their willingness to pay or save on their water bills. “The end result will be a price submission and ongoing plan that aligns to customer expectations while ensuring our water and sewerage services remain effective and affordable.” Customers will have until 20 June to have their say via the bill simulator, however ongoing input will continue to be sought at yoursay.southeastwater.com.au. South East Water will submit its 2018-'23 price submission to the Essential Services Commission in September.

and really make a difference to the lives of others. Sue Noble said the community should really value its older volunteers. They have the experience and the patience which is often required, they are genuine about making a contribution and really understand and are connected to their community. And for the volunteers themselves, volunteering results in a “helper’s high”, a powerful physical and emotional feeling people get when they help others. Senior volunteers can often provide the emotional warmth and insight that provides service users with real value. And the volunteers themselves love it. It really is a win-win-win - for the volunteer, the person, organisation or cause they are helping, and for the Victorian community, she said. There are estimated to be more than 120,000 not-for-profit community organisations operating in Victoria. The majority are informal and rely entirely on volunteers. Downsizing policy needs work By Ian Henschke, Chief Advocate, National Seniors Australia. National Seniors’ Rightsizing proposal was pretty straightforward. We asked that $250,000 be quarantined from the profits of the sale of the family home and exempted from the Aged Pension means test. Older Australians could keep this money to pay for essentials such as health and aged care as they grew even older - and keep their part or full pension, and the concessions that go with them. Around one in four National Seniors’ members have told us they live in unsuitable houses they are too big, too expensive to maintain, or even unsafe if mobility is compromised. Our aim was to help those older Australians who most needed it - the ones on part and full aged pensions, that top out at $888pf for a single person and $1339.40pf for a couple, including supplements. The government’s initiative is more about superannuation than downsizing. It’s complex and relies on the transfer of surplus sales proceeds into superannuation. That money will then be considered for the means test. So those who want to downsize will lose some, most, or all of
their pension depending on the calculations. That was a key reason why many home-owning pensioners were staying put before the budget, and it’s hard to see how that will change because of this initiative. There’s also the added issue of stamp duty costs, which vary from state to state. But here’s a couple of scenarios. A single pensioner in a house worth $870,000 (the Melbourne median house price is $850,000) sells and downsizes to a $320,000 single bedroom unit. They make $550,000 on the sale and would be able to put $300,000 into a super account, leaving $250,000 cash. This puts them over the pension threshold, without considering any non-home assets (e.g. car and furniture). They would need to earn a return of 4.25 per cent pa on their $550,000 in super and cash just to replace the pension (now $23,096pa, including supplements, with no tax payable), and that’s a tall order in today’s economic climate. They’d also lose the pension concession card, which is worth $2-3000 pa. Now let’s look at a different example. A couple who are selffunded retirees have more than $821,500 in non-home assets so are not eligible for a pension. They are asset rich because they have a home worth $2.4
million. They downsize to a unit worth $1.8 million. They can add a further $600,000 in proceeds from the sale to their super, taking it to a total of $1,421,500. The minimum income they allowed to draw is $71,075 pa, with no tax payable. They are winners, but hardly living a life of luxury. One estimate I saw in postBudget analysis estimated 10,000 homeowners may take advantage of the new scheme each year. That’s a fraction of the number of pensioners in Australia who would be helped by a genuine downsizing policy. National Seniors believes it’s good to have incentives for Australians to better fund their retirement. But as you can see from our examples above, this policy is hardly a game-changer. At the same time, some full and part-pensioners may look at this as a significant disincentive to downsize. National Seniors will continue to campaign for a genuine downsizing policy and with almost 2 million pensioners who are homeowners, this is a policy the Federal Government needs to get right. - Ian Henschke Chief Advocate National Seniors Australia

Volleyball star a fanatic By Nick Creely Berwick and Haileybury College youngster Nathan Dowsett is a good old-fashioned sports fanatic. Whether it is kicking goals playing for the South East Juniors interleague team in footy, or playing representative basketball for the Casey Cavaliers, Nathan is a rare and exciting talent and he’s only going to get better. But the 13-year-old's next challenge is conquering the world of volleyball - a thrilling and physically gruelling sport that perhaps goes under the radar. After putting in the hard yards, he is now set to represent his state in September’s Australian Junior Volleyball Championships, to be played in the sunny Gold Coast suburb of Coomera. “It will be an absolute honour to represent Victoria in the State Volleyball team and it has always been a goal in my sights,” he told Star News Group. “I am extremely excited about
going to Coomera in Queensland for the volleyball tournament. It will be a very good experience for me and all the other boys playing at a very high level, representing our state. “Although it comes with a lot of excitement, it also comes with lots of nerves.” Nathan’s training schedule is demanding, but will only increase as he enters a professional set-up led by his Victorian coach in the White Team, Colin Priest. “A lot of hard work has gone into it for my school team, training 2-3 times a week and playing every Saturday morning,” he said. “My coaches at school and Volleyball Victoria have been fantastic helping me get to this point. They really encourage me and help me improve each week. “Now that I’ve been selected, we train for three hours every Sunday.” Nathan has been playing football and basketball since the age of eight, and has used elements of these two sports to guide him into the rigours of volleyball.
“The sport has a lot of upsides which has really drawn me to the game, such as playing as part of a team and learning lots of new skills,” he said. “It’s something different for me as well having played many other sports, both basketball for Casey Cavaliers and football for South East Juniors. “Learning all the time is a real positive for me. All the coaches and the boys I’ve met along the way have been great. “ As a tall youngster, Nathan has a significant advantage, but said the game is beyond the individual and requires dedication and hard work. “My height can be used to my advantage, like playing up at the net and spiking, but the main key to success in any sport is team work and working together, giving 100 per cent at training and in the games, and having respect for your team-mates and coaches,” he said.

Big weekend for Cavaliers Australia’s best junior teams battled it out in the 2017 Medibank National Junior Classic over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, with the Casey Cavaliers competing in the Under 16 Boys tournament. Coming up against some outstanding junior talent, the Cavs fought extremely hard over the weekend, winning two of their six games. Feathers are set to fly By David Nagel Pretenders or contenders - one game of footy shouldn’t necessarily define a football club either way, but in the case of Narre Warren and Doveton those are the tags on offer at Kalora Park on Saturday. Currently fourth and fifth on the ladder, at least one of these two was expected to improve to the point where it could seriously challenge the grand finalist of the last two years - Berwick and Cranbourne. The Doves, who went on a serious recruiting campaign in the off-season, looked a serious threat after knocking off third-placed Beaconsfield in Round 6, but subsequent losses to Berwick and Tooradin has slipped it back in amongst the pack. The Doves were injury-ravaged against the Seagulls, but will still be massively disappointed that they couldn’t take a firm grip on that topthree position. This week’s game, well it’s probably the most important between these two since they met in consecutive grand finals in 2005 and ’06. Apart from 2009, when the Doves played off in the grand final against Pakenham, Narre Warren has since been the better team. They won nine in a row against the Doves from 2010 through to 2015 before the Doves started a fightback. They’ve won their last three against the Magpies - but haven’t been able to convert that advantage into a higher ladder position at the end of the season. This is a new-look Doveton side. Youngsters Jake Blackwood, Josh Bradley, Sam Muirhead and Malis Lokeron have really provided a spark - Blackwood particularly impressive at centre half back - while regular faces like Ryan Hendy and Michael Henry have had consistent seasons to date. Dual league best and fairest winner Russ Gabriel has had a great season in the ruck, while nippy types like Nick Battle, Clayton McCartney and Kyle Hendy have produced some stunning football at times. The Doves just need to get more consistent across four quarters. And this week they face a Narre Warren side that is treading water at the moment. Just like the Doves the Magpies defining moment of the season came against Beaconsfield - a 26-point home defeat in round three that cements them at their current level. Wins against Officer, Tooradin, Hampton Park and Pakenham were to be expected - as were losses to both Berwick and Cranbourne. This week becomes the true defining moment of their season - a pretender or contender moment if ever there was one. The Magpies are certainly more potent up forward; brothers Nick (26 goals) and Stewie (22) Scanlon sit one and two on the league goal-kicking table while Aaron Wilson (13) has provided a handy third option in his five games. Trent Cody (9), Hayden Stagg (5) and Michael Collins (5) are the Magpies’ mids to have slipped forward to kick a crucial goal or two this season. But stopping Nick Scanlon is the key for the Doves this weekend. He not only hits the scoreboard hard but can do so from long range, and is also quite adept at setting up his team mates. Just 10 touches could result in six goals and two or three to a team mate and that’s something the Doves can’t afford in what’s sure to be a tight encounter. Defenders Matt Jameson, Mitch Woolgar or Blackwood will have some restless nights ahead. It’s the Magpies to salute by two points in a classic. Can Tooradin crack the code of breaking the most attractive defensive unit in the competition when it welcomes top-of-the-table Berwick to Westernport Oval on Saturday? Attractive ... defensive ... they’re usually words that don’t go hand in hand when it comes to footy - but this Beauty and the Beast called Berwick has brought them together beautifully. To fully assess what Stewie Kemperman and his navy blues have been able to accomplish this year, we first need to take a step back. In 2015, under Rhys Nisbet, the Wickers conceded 195 goals in 20 games at the impressive average of 9.75. Last year they turned the screws

This year, after seven rounds, the Wickers have allowed just 50 goals in seven games at the miserly rate of 7.14. And they’ve continued to improve defensively without losing one ounce of style. The recruitment of Michael Johnson, Michael Riseley and Ash Smith, at the start of 2015, has transformed the look of the Wickers over the last three seasons. These three guns are quite content to defend, defeat their opponent one on one, before flicking the switch to become aggressors. They combine like no other trio in the competition, using their elite skills by hand and foot to start many a forward thrust. Johnson had a slow start to the season -but has rejoined the chorus of the Three Tenors over the last month of footy. Berwick’s unbeaten start to the season has been super impressive on many fronts. It’s worth remembering that their number-one goal kicker from last year, Ben Kearns (50 goals), has yet to take to the field while Mitch Johnson (46), Luke Nelson (35), Mark Weekes (33) and Kurt Batt (22) have all departed the scene. That’s 186 goals missing from last year. This year, through necessity, they have spread the load more evenly.
Key forwards Brody Connolly (17) and Tim Gunn (13) lead the way while versatile types like Bryce Rutherford (12), Trent Thomas (10), James Magner (8) and Lucas Jellyman-Turner (8) have made sure the mass exodus from the front half hasn’t impacted the win column. Tooradin obviously has its hands full, but will go in confident after winning two in a row for the first time since defeating Keysborough and Berwick in rounds 15 and 16, 2014. They have the types to trouble that brilliant Berwick defence with Andrew Dean, Nick Lang, Nathan Page and Paddy Chin all mobile, while Fab Dilizia has brought an unorthodox, but very effective style of play to inside 50. Matt Livermore played one of his best games in Seagulls’ colours last time out and how he, Lang, Page, Josh Muling and the emerging Andrew Proctor can handle the heat in the midfield will go a long way to determining the outcome. They have gears to move through the Wickers ... and they’ll continue their unbeaten run with a 23-point victory. Officer begins a massive three weeks of footy when it welcomes a super-refreshed Beaconsfield to Starling Road on Saturday. The Kangaroos need to win at least one of their next three games against the Eagles, Doveton and Narre Warren to rubber stamp their improvement and, more importantly, keep their season alive. On current form they are three assignments
that are well within their grasp. They began the season slowly, but their last five outings suggest they are one of the most improved teams in the league. Wins over Pakenham, Hampton Park and Tooradin were followed by solid four-goal defeats at the hands of Cranbourne and Berwick - that’s good enough form to be super-competitive in this one. Doug Koop has found a really good balance with his new side, Dylan Chapman, Nick Redley and Sean Roach are more than capable big men, while club stalwart Ben Tivendale has relished the circuit breaker provided by classy types like Chris Larosa, Mat Jones and Jesse Longmuir. And Matty Clarke is finally receiving help up forward, the move of Blair Allan to the front half a master-stroke by Koop. And the emergence of Redley has allowed Chapman to become a focal point up forward. The Eagles were up-and-about early, winning four of their first five, but haven’t sung their song since defeating Hampton Park on Saturday 6 May. Defeats to Doveton and Cranbourne and then a two-week break, for a bye and the Queen’s Birthday weekend, have left coach Leigh McQuillen with plenty of food for thought. They now have a three-week block before their final bye of the season in Round 12, and games against Officer, Pakenham and Hampton Park should reap handsome rewards. But this is the danger game of those three. Skipper Scott Meyer has been quiet by his standards of late while the absence of Daniel Mislicki has been clearly noticeable around the stoppages in recent times. Beau Dowler and Troy McDermott were shut down by the Doves and Cranny and should be a real focus for the Kangaroos on the weekend. We’re going for an upset here ... it’s Officer by 11 points. And Cranbourne will be looking to make it six consecutive wins when it makes the trip to Toomuc Reserve to take on Pakenham. The Eagles have just gone quietly about their business this year, often challenged, but lifting on all but one occasion. That 47-point loss to Berwick in Round 2 is still two games from being rectified and games against the Lions and Tooradin should have them peaked for that massive contest. Shaun Marusic has genuine claims to being the best midfielder in the competition while big men like Michael Boland and Troy Tharle have had consistent seasons to date. Aaron Bower and Dylan Cavalot have grown their reputations as running machines, a department the Eagles will strengthen with Luke BeeHugo making his return from suspension. Pakenham finally gained reward for their efforts against Hampton Park last start and will take the game up to the Eagles early. Former coach Steve O’Bryan has been fantastic for the Lions this year, a shining light with his determination and skill, while players like Jackson Hillard and Jack Kowarzik are relishing a crack at the big time. But the Eagles are mature and strong. Ryan Davey - just like a good fishing story - is getting bigger and better with age, while Marc Holt will continue to improve with a likely match-up against a regular foe in Stephen Morey. Megane drives Renault push By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Renault is continuing its strong marketing push in Australia by adding sedan and station wagon variants of its Megane. The very stylish Megane hatchback has been a success downunder since its launch almost two years ago and the sedans and wagons have a fair bit of French flair in there rumps as well. However, buyers are tending to somewhat illogically in our opinion opt for SUVs these days and the new Renault wagon may struggle to sell in significant numbers. The sedan should make its niche for itself in the sales race. Justin Hocevar, Renault Australia’s managing director, tells us: “With the welcome return of the Megane wagon to the range, Renault now has an even more practical vehicle for families with an active lifestyle, or for business users who need significant carrying capacity as well as the comfort, safety and performance of a passenger car.” A 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine is used in the Renault Megane GT wagon. The Zen and GT-Line wagons are powered by a turbo-petrol 1.2 litre engine. It sits beside Renault’s Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) automated transmission for the first time. Infotainment is provide by the RLink 2 multimedia system with satellite navigation and a 7.0-in touchscreen. There is an Arkamys audio

The Zen sedan can be optioned with a Sunroof Pack featuring not only the electric sunroof, but also an automatic dimming rear view mirror and sun visor with illuminated mirror. The Intens sedan has an 8.7 inch portrait orientation capacitive touchscreen and satellite navigation, Renault has long been one of the leaders in safety so it’s no surprise it has been awarded a five-star safety rat-
ing. Standard features include six airbags, stability control, hill start assist, front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. Automatic dusk-sensing headlights and automatic windscreen wipers. Supercar racer revealed By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Holden has revealed the first official concept images of the next generation (NG) Commodore race car that will be introduced into the Supercars Championship in 2018. At this stage it’s only a computer-generated image by GM Design Australia Exterior Design Manager Peter Hughes. The Supercars version of the NG Commodore is currently undergoing a design and development process in partnership between Holden and its official factory racing team, Triple Eight Race Engineering. The design work includes simulation and aerodynamic evaluation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling. In an interesting move, Holden has confirmed the nextgen Commodore will be homologated with the current V8 engine for the 2018 season only. A new, twin-turbocharged
V6 engine, suitable for Supercars’ Gen 2 regulations, is currently undergoing development in partnership with the General Motors Performance and Racing Center in Pontiac, Michigan. Triple Eight Race Engineering will seek approval from Supercars to run a V6-powered Commodore as a wild card entry at selected rounds next season before a full rollout for the 2019 season. The V6 engine will then be accessible to all Holden teams via a favourable leasing program. It also allows Holden and Triple Eight Race Engineering to assist Supercars’ technical department with development of its programs ensuring the turbocharged V6 can achieve parity with the existing, naturally aspirated V8s. “Our sport prides itself on Supercars being the closest competition in the world, and the phased introduction of the next-generation Commodore
will ensure that is maintained,” Triple Eight Race Engineering Team Principal Roland Dane said. Supercars Australia Chief Executive Officer James Warburton applauded Holden on the new 2018 Commodore and the manufacturer’s V6 engine development program for Gen 2. “It is a pragmatic and sensible approach by Holden and Triple Eight Race Engineering in introducing the new Commodore and a twin-turbocharged V6 powered engine to the sport,” Mr Warburton said. Development of the new Commodore Supercar continues with construction of the first car well underway and ready to undertake Supercars Aero Validation in the fourth quarter of 2017.
