THE Cardinia Shire community is pitching in to raise funds for a new jetty at Lakeside in Pakenham. Co-ordinated by Lakeside Sailing Club, the jetty will mean that more locals will be able to enjoy time out on the water, sailing the 6.5 hectare lake. The lake currently has one launching point, a boat ramp on the western side of the estate. The Cardinia Shire council has already contributed $10,700 to the project with another $10,700 needed from the community to fund the project. It will have a locked gate - allowing only members of the LSC-P to gain entry - designed especially for the C Crane/ Lift Hoist for the disabled confined to wheelchairs. It will not be available for people wishing to fish. Prominent Cardinia developer, Parklea will donate a further $2000 for the build and will fund jetty signage for the club should the project go ahead. In return, residents of the Parklea Timbertop estate will have

the opportunity to sail the lake during the 2017/18 season commencing in November. “The jetty is a really exciting development for the community and one we felt was worth supporting especially for the disabled confined to wheelchairs," Jarod Mills said. “Adjacent to the Cardinia Cultural Centre, Lakeside Park is already an icon in Pakenham, with many locals enjoying walking and playing in the park. The jetty will enhance the area as a place where the community comes together." Members of Lakeside Sailing Club are also excited about the prospect of a new jetty. The club, formed in 2011, now owns several sailing boats for members young and old to enjoy. Their sailing program commences in November each year and runs through until the end of April the following year. People of all ages and levels of experience are welcome to join and try their hand at sailing.

THE

Gazette IN PAKENHAM AND DISTRICT

SMART MOVE BY A PROPERTY PIONEER THE year 1917 is historic for not only the Gazette but also another iconic business which is still closely associated with the southeast today. WHILE Albert Edward Thomas was moving his newspaper operation to Pakenham, a young coach maker named Frank Facey was making his first foray into real estate in Dandenong. Back then, the region was primarily broad pastoral runs with commercial and business needs being met by an emerging township. By 1917, Frank Facey was so motivated by the infinite potential for growth in the south-east that he took the intuitive decision to delve into the world of real estate. He purchased his first real estate business in that year and it was this inspired event which mapped out a successful future for his children and grandchildren. Frank Facey was a man of integrity and high morals. He became a sworn valuer and a Justice of the Peace. He was president of the Real Estate Agents and Auctioneers Frankston/Mordialloc branch and was appointed to the central council in 1935. As World War II came to an end, the region experienced an influx of migration

and commerce. Blacksmiths and carriage builders made way for motor vehicles and modern industry. Frank Facey had positioned himself in the right place at the right time and with his keen eye for business and strong values, he was instrumental in initiating positive change for the region. It was during the challenging days of the 1930s that Frank’s son, Francis Angus Facey, decided to join his father’s business. Together they formed a formidable team. Angus and his wife Adele were early pioneers in the Dandenong and Berwick area. They both earned the respect and admiration of their peers for their tireless community work throughout the region. By now, Frank’s predictions for growth in the south-east were being realised and much of the area’s development was successfully transacted through the Frank Facey Real Estate business. In 1956 Frank Facey’s Real Estate and Business Agency built a new, modern office at 254 Lonsdale Street Dandenong, where successor First National Hall and Partners still operates from to this day. Angus shared his father’s bold ambition and insight into the future development of the region and he purchased a 65-acre property at Narre Warren. In 1984 that property became one of the area’s first subdivisions, Franleigh Park

Estate. A public reserve was named in his honour: The Angus Facey Reserve. Frank Facey and his son Angus were at the helm when Dandenong and the surrounding districts grew from broad pastoral farmlands into the vibrant towns and cities that are to this day still experiencing remarkable popularity. A third generation, Angus’s son Andrew Facey, joined the thriving business in 1968. Frank Facey’s early success continued through the generations and today his original company has broadened its horizons to include operations in Dandenong, Mulgrave, Endeavour Hills, Berwick, Narre Warren and Pakenham. These businesses now include First National Neilson Partners, First National Hall and Partners, Parklea and Facey Industrial Commercial. It’s quite a legacy for a man who started his working life as a humble blacksmith. “He’d be pretty impressed,“ said Ross Neilson, the director of First National Real Estate Neilson Partners. “To see the company go through three generations and remain strong and viable is pretty impressive and a credit to the Facey family.“ Albert and Frank would no doubt be pleased to see that the businesses they founded a century ago still do business with each other today.

The name Frank Facey is synonymous with real estate in the south east.

COMPANY WAS BUILT FROM PIONEERING STOCK STOCK and station agent Alex Scott and Co. has supported the Pakenham Gazette from its beginnings, advertising from the first years of the newspaper’s circulation. Far out-dating the Pakenham Gazette and Berwick Shire News, the iconic company marks 131 years servicing the Pakenham district this year. Alex Scott and Co. was founded in April 1886 from humble beginnings in the then pioneering districts of Gippsland, during a time when farmers milked cows by hand, ploughed fields with horsedrawn ploughs and walked their cattle several miles to market. Perhaps a driving force behind his future career, Alex grew up in the Poowong area on his father James’ farm called The Priory. The Scott family played a very active role in settling and

developing the area and extensive stockyards were built on the Scott family farm for the handling of a 300-strong herd of cows and other animals. The stockyards quickly became the centre of the region’s regular stock sales and young Alex would help yard the cattle and assist the auctioneers. This experience, no doubt influenced the later establishment of his business. At just 25 years old, Alex was invited to become a partner in the former Hyde Bros with George Howard. The partnership marked the beginning of the company as it is known today and it was sealed when George left to go to Western Australia in 1895, leaving Alex to take over his interest of £200.

54 Pakenham Gazette | Wednesday, 7 June, 2017

Three months later the interest was paid off and Hyde Bros was officially renamed Alex Scott and Co. It is no coincidence that the firm is built on foundations of honesty and integrity, as these characteristics were the hallmarks of Alex Scott’s life. Alex became something of a legend in Dandenong and surrounding areas as a skilled horseman, expert judge of cattle and an excellent auctioneer. He was also known for his honesty, fairness and kindness. When the bushfires of the ’90s swept through Gippsland, many farmers faced ruin when their grass and miles of fencing were destroyed. Alex Scott supplied them with grass seed and fencing materials at

no initial cost, and was eventually repaid every penny. He was also a trusted courier for early settlers who found it difficult to obtain medical supplies and other necessary items. In his travels he was frequently given shopping lists by country clients and brought their items back on his return trip. The firm has moved location three times since it began in the original small timber office in Dandenong. The office moved to Walker Street in 1924, to 297 Lonsdale Street during World War II and then to its current head office at 147 Lonsdale Street in 1960. Alex’s son Stewart Scott came into the business in 1931, just four years after his father’s death. Having worked on the family’s

32,000 acre property Aratula at Tocumwal, Stewart had very little business experience and he came into the firm in tough times of the Depression years. After an early struggle he eventually went on to open branches at Pakenham, Mornington, Korumburra, Poowong, Inverloch, Lang Lang and Wonthaggi. Alex Scott and Co also has a long association with Dandenong Market and has followed the market to three locations. As well as strong historical ties to the Dandenong and Gippsland regions, the company also has a unique record of an unbroken family association. Alex’s son Stewart passed the business to his nephew Bruce Gibson in 1950 followed by his two sons Tom and Stewart.
