Back to the future By Garry Howe Pakenham Secondary College celebrated its past while looking to the future at a 50-year reunion in the school library on Tuesday 30 May. More than 100 past and present students and staff marked the occasion, reminiscing over days of the old schoolyard and marveling about how things had changed. The college opened as Pakenham High School back in February 1967 and moved to its present Princes Highway site three years later. Current principal Ray Squires, who also taught at the school from 1987 to ’99, gave an insight into just how different the school community was now compared to the early days. Mr Squires said the school previously had 90 per cent of students arrive by bus - up to 600 at its peak in the 1990s - and that there were now only 23, or three per cent, of students arriving that way. He said the school community reflected the change from a country town to an outer Melbourne suburb and had gone from being predominantly Anglicised to being a multicultural melting pot, currently hosting students born in 23 different countries. Mr Squires said the school celebrated those changes as it reflected on the past. “We are a melting pot of society,” he said. “It’s great to see those children of different cultures mixing without issue in their groups. That’s how it should be in society.” Bass MP Brian Paynter, a former student and the current school council president, compered the function and echoed his principal’s sentiment that the college continued to make a difference in the life of its students. “We should never forget that,” he said. “Pakenham Secondary College is proud of its past and is heading in the right direction.” Mr Paynter said the quality of the current all-female leadership team underlined that statement. He said that for the first time this year the school opted to choose its

They all addressed the crowd, along with some staff and students of past eras. Bob Taylor taught from 1968, the school’s second year, and recalled the magnificent facilities back then and the close ties between teachers and students. Andrew Trotter, who arrived as a Form 2 student in 1970 as the school opened on the current site, covered his era in an enlightening and entertaining address.
Daniel Madhaven, who is now achieving considerable success in the finance industry, spoke of the life lessons gleaned through his schoolyard experience, as did Collingwood premiership player Tyson Goldsack, of more recent years. Mr Squires made presentations to long-serving teachers Jenny Healy and JoAnne Duggan acknowledging their contributions to the school community. Committee secretary Annette Slattery said the category’s inclusion brought “a whole new facet to the display” with its three-dimensional entries. “There was such a depth of work and range of styles, but somehow the common thread of recyclable material really seemed to draw the pieces together,” Ms Slattery said. Art show judges Janine Good and Jacquie Nichols-Reeves struggled to name winners for the show’s numerous prize categories, with all entries of a high standard. However one entry, Big Red, by

The 41st annual festival, formerly the Yakkerboo Art Festival, was held over the weekend, attracting strong crowds. Kicking off with a “raucous” opening ceremony and wearable art parade hosted by Bass MP Brian Paynter, the evening quickly set the mood for the rest of the event. “Brian was hilarious and it really made for a great celebration to start the show off,” art show president Jillian Ronald said. This year’s event had a focus on
Cardinia Men’s Shed’s Bill Ratten, featuring an enormous chair with a kangaroo dominating the piece, especially caught their eye and won its creator the Local Artist award. Another highlight from the weekend was the Gold Standard prize, which went to Rhonda Gray for her Sounds of Silence. Described by judges as an “evocative piece”, it represented a girl submerged in water and was praised for its “technical prowess and expressive nature”. Historic low rate rise approved By Bonny Burrows Cardinia Shire Council has formally adopted its 2017-’18 budget, featuring the lowest rate increase in the shire’s history. Despite 18 community submissions - one of which was a petition in support of Cardinia Cultural Centre planned upgrades - the financial document was approved by councillors at a special meeting on 29 May. Central Ward councillor Collin Ross, who has infamously objected to all but the previous year’s budgets during his 10 years in council, welcomed the historical low 2 per cent rate increase.
“I will support this budget, I believe it’s a very responsible budget,” Cr Ross said. However he admitted council would need “significant support” in the future from the State Government, in terms of not cost shifting any further expenses to local governments. Deputy Mayor Jodie Owen said the State Government’s Fair Rate System was “absolutely putting the crush on us”. The council was fortunate to keep rates low through the sale of parts of the South East Business Park, she said. “This was income council defi-
nitely needed... but if the screws keep getting tightened, we will struggle,” the deputy mayor said. “We are, to some degree, at the government’s mercy.” Councillor Michael Schilling agreed, and the recent 50 per cent to the state’s Growing Suburbs Fund was “disappointing” and limited council spending. “This places that extra bit of pressure when trying to fund key things in this budget,” Cr Schilling said. Despite the challenges, he said he believed the council had done well to create “a fair and quite progressive” budget.

The 2017-18 council budget has committed a record $44.86 million for capital works, with new projects totalling $21.49 million of that sum. An addition, $23.37 million is budgeted for renewal and upgrade projects, including $12.51 million for recreation and community facilities and $4.8 million for roads. School to boost skills By Victoria Stone-Meadows and Bonny Burrows The proposed Casey Tech School has taken a step forward with Premier Daniel Andrews visiting the site of the new school at Chisholm Institute at Berwick on Wednesday 31 May. The premier viewed the approved architectural plans for the school as well as met with plumbing and electrical apprentices from the Trade Training Centre. The premier also surveyed the site of the new $10 million Berwick Health Centre which will feature nurse training and simulation laboratories, learning areas and staff accommodation. The new Casey Tech School forms part of the State Government’s $128 million tech school initiative that will see the establishment of 10 such schools around the state. The tech schools - that focus on training and skills sharing between secondary colleges, universities and TAFEs - will allow students to gain valuable knowledge in a particular skill. During his visit to the Berwick Chisholm campus, Premier Andrews said the new tech school represented a strong investment in the future workforce of Victoria. “We were elected to put people first, and these investments at Berwick Chisholm do exactly that - giving the next generation the skills they need for the job they want,” he said. “We’re investing in better TAFE, skills and training in Melbourne’s
south east and across Victoria.” Tech schools used to be popular in Victoria before the Cain Labor Government of the 1980s closed them in favour of establishing more state secondary colleges. Once established, the Casey Tech School will allow students from 28 secondary schools in the region to gain access to vocational training and further education pathways. The Casey Tech School plans to focus on biomedical technology, health and medical tech, and high tech manufacturing, production and processing technologies. A director for the school will be appointed in the coming months with construction of the new building commencing shortly afterwards. Chisholm Acting CEO Grant Radford said he was proud to have the Casey Tech School opening at their Berwick campus. “The tech school is a significant project, and we’re partnering with all of the schools in the region,” he said. “It’s the largest in the state, and obviously will have huge benefits in working with the schools to enhance the programs that are already running in the schools.” The Casey Tech School is expected to have a capacity of about 200 students, but Chisholm is open to tailoring programs in partnership with local secondary schools. “Obviously, not every single student is probably going to come through the building,” Mr Radford said.

Complex plan to protect youth from crime gangs risk By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Cook Island Community of Cranbourne is leading a grassroots revolution to get youth off the streets and away from gang- related crime. The group applied for a grant from the State Government, and has received $400,000 from the Community Infrastructure and Cultural Precincts (CICP) program. The group will be using the money to build a community education and cultural facility to help engage and educate Cook Island youth. Cook Island Community Leader Mata Tuerei Mani said while they first wanted to build a church in Cranbourne, they decided to lean more towards building a general multi-use facility. “We are a church group that decided to build in Cranbourne, and we incorporated whole Cook Island Presbyterian Fellowship Incorporated to raise money for the project,” she said. “We wanted to help out the community and also have a small church to

community’s traditions alive, but the reason why we are rushing ahead now is we have heard about the APEX issue so much and mainly need to train our children in our culture,” Ms Mani said. “Our children were drifting onto the wrong side of the law, so we rushed
to get it done and as well as using it as a church, it will be a community complex to educate kids.” “The main idea is to keep youth off the streets and doing something constructive.” The Cook Island community complex will use classes such as Bible College, community engagement initiatives and a partnership with Christians against Poverty (CAP) to help young people stay clear of trouble. “CAP has been a great influence in bringing youth off the streets and teaching them to use money wisely, so they don’t turn to crime,” Ms Mani said. “CAP also has a program for young ones dabbling in drugs and things like that to help them beat addictions that lead to other problems.” The community complex is well on the way to completion with the help of the grant from the State Government with Ms Mani hoping they will be operational in the next few months. While the building is being constructed by the Cook Island communi-
ty, Ms Mani said it would be open for use by other groups who need a space for their community. “We want to make the community aware that once we have a facility up we want to share with other groups who want to hire it,” she said. “It will be available to any other ethnic groups who ware wanting to practise their culture and community.” The government CICP program granted $4.22 million to over 30 community groups across the state to support community facilities and initiatives. Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott announced the grants on Wednesday 3 May saying the government supports the multicultural communities of Victoria. “Diverse communities make a huge contribution to our state and society, but it is important they can stay connected to their cultural roots,” she said. “By working together with local communities, we can build a Victoria where everyone belongs, feels accepted and contributes.”

A man who has partially denied being part of a spate of thefts and dishonesty across Melbourne’s South-East has been granted bail to resume living among co-offenders in a Endeavour Hills boarding house. Joshua Ring, 29, and two co-residents at the boarding house allegedly stole a Nissan Tiida from a Doveton resident’s driveway on 21 March, a court heard. Police informant Senior Constable Heath Cay told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 22 May that the stolen vehicle was subsequently fitted with two sets of stolen number plates. It was allegedly involved in petrol drive-offs and ‘paywave’ purchases with stolen credit-cards at servos, supermarkets and McDonald’s outlets in March and April. Ring and co-offenders had been identified on CCTV footage at the stores; Ring’s fingerprints were dusted on the crashed Tiida’s passenger doorframe after it was abandoned near his home on 13 April, Sen Const Cay said. Ring had also made partial admissions to being in the car and using some of the credit cards, the informant told the court. The alleged offending continued in a Suzuki Swift with one stolen number-plate on 20 and 24 April. Again, illegal pay-wave purchases were made
from credit-cards stolen from cars at homes in Doncaster East and Beaconsfield. A short time after the latter burglary, the cards were used in a $1000-plus “spending spree” of 15 illegal transactions at various stores. At the time of all of the offending, Ring was on bail for evading police while driving unlicensed in Bendigo and breaching an intervention order in Geelong. Sen Const Cay said Ring - who had also told police he couldn’t drive - had attributed his offending to his ‘ice’ habit. Police had opposed Ring’s bail due to an “unacceptable risk of re-offending”, partly fuelled by his boarding-house co-offenders. However a Corrections Victoria report recommended Ring’s release to the same boarding house on the CISP ‘credit bail’ program. Ring would resume contact with drug treatment, outreach, mental health and other services under the program, his lawyer told the court. The accused, who had spent 12 days in remand, was still recovering from the trauma of being seriously assaulted in custody in 2014, the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he was concerned about Ring spending further time in remand given that trauma, Ring’s Aboriginality, his one prior conviction and the unlikelihood of serving a jail term. “But the question is his ac-
commodation situation. “It doesn’t seem to be working well for him,” Mr Vandersteen said. He noted the offending coincided with Ring moving to the boarding house two months ago, which was “around the corner” from another notorious address. “He gets put in the boarding house with all the same problems and what do you think is going to happen then?” The likely alternative was Ring being put up at a pub which was “not ideal either”, Mr Vandersteen said. Mr Vandersteen said it was not a weak prosecution case. “You follow the cards, you follow (Ring),” he said. But he noted it was important for Ring to “face the elders” at a Koori court appearance in Bendigo seven days later, with the hope of finalising the matter with a corrections order. Ring was bailed on strict conditions to appear at Bendigo including a night curfew, daily reporting to Endeavour Hills police station and a ban on associating with the co-accused outside the boarding house. “You have a lock on the door,” Mr Vandersteen said. “If you don’t like the people around there, you can lock yourself away.” Ring is listed to appear at a mention hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 June.

A man has pleaded guilty to stealing a safe during a brazen daylight burglary of a Fountain Gate donut outlet. Adrian Peter Jacobsson, of Pakenham, had entered the Donut King’s rear “staff only” zone and closed the door behind him about 2.45pm on 5 January, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. A minute and a half later, Jacobsson emerged with a safe stashed up his jumper.
He later told police that he’d cracked the safe open - with its $1138.20 of cash inside - at a nearby park and put it in a bin. Jacobsson also pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving while suspended and driving an unregistered vehicle in Officer on 31 January. Being ‘licensed’ to not exceed .00, Jacobsson blew 0.047. Between these two incidents, Jacobsson had been put on a community corrections order with mental health and substance treatment and judi-

Perhaps MP Jude Perera should have turned around and looked at the condition of the bus stops that have been added to the station. He might have seen the rubbish and dead shrubs all along them - it would have wiped the smile off his face - then come along in the dark and seen the lights not working. We were told that there was to be an upgrade of bus stops with upgraded security and landscaping - none of which has happened - and now we are to lose more car parking for bus stops. Good idea, but now more people will park on the grass and ruin it in the wet. Young take on the world By Cam Lucadou-Wells A bunch of world-minded Nossal High School students proved they were ready to douse some of the world’s most urgent crises, according to former diplomat Alf Reina. Lauren Richardson, Aditya Gadgil, Jordan Van Rhyn and Hayden Radford received awards for a stellar performance at a Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) during a recent weekend on Phillip Island. “I’m always impressed and inspired by some of the things that kids come up with,” Mr Reina said. “I say to them our generation has failed to solve these problems, maybe yours can find a solution.” During the retreat, participants were split into 26 teams of two. Each team represented a member state of the United Nations in resolution debates on the Syria conflict, human rights in Myanmar, climate change and violence against girls and women. The students’ ability to get to the “substance” of the debates and reflect their nation’s viewpoint deeply impressed Mr Reina. The winning teams had gone beyond the debate, and came up with strategies such as offering aid, trade and labour migration opportunities or dishing out sanctions. “This may be a simulation exercise but the issues are real.” Mr Reina has been posted as an Australian Government diplomat in London, as well as working with the United Nations to help refugees during

Smoothing the move A Berwick components manufacturer has been given a $55,000 helping hand to adapt to the national automotive industry shutdown. Australian Precision Technologies (APT) received the grant for a new workforce strategy as part of the State Government’s program to help affected businesses in the automotive supply chain. The manufacturer produces customised and high-precision components for the automotive, aero-
nautics and defence industries. Its workforce strategy project will include an organisational redesign and management coaching workshops. During a visit to the firm on 30 May, Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said the grant would ensure APT thrived during the transition. “It’s terrific that we can support an innovative company to grow bigger and create more
jobs for local people.” The government’s Automotive Supply Chain Transition Program has so far provided $1.5 million to 40 companies. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said the grants helped companies identify future markets, plan for transition and ensure their workforce was sustainable. While internet sales continue to grow in Australia, the rate of growth has slowed, and it’s commodity products like books and TVs that best suit internet sales. Small businesses that offer a unique consumer experience with expert product knowledge, great customer service and after sales back-up are actually growing faster than internet sales, according to the ABS. “The internet is revolutionising our lives and the way we
buy certain products, but I can’t get a great cup of coffee on the net. And I can’t get my car serviced, my hair cut or great advice on which shirt looks best on me,” Mr Morgan said. “And this is where small business has the competitive advantage. “Local small businesses need to make the most of their local presence. We need to sell a personal experience, not just a product. “The small businesses that don’t offer a niche experience are almost certain to fail now that competition does not only come from shops in the next street or town, but from every
retailer on earth with a website.” Mr Morgan will present a series of 50 minute seminars on how small businesses in Casey and Cardinia can thrive in tough economic times as part of the Local Business Leaders Seminars. It just makes sense to do it,” Nicole explained. “It’s a number of auctions being called back-to-back in more controlled environments. “Usually auctions are onsite whether its rain, hail or shine. “For the vendor, these types of auctions are great because they’re not losing buyers to unpredictable variables. “Also, everyone has to register prior to bidding, so we knew how many people were there to bid. It was a good indication of who was there.”

Warriors stay on track By Russell Bennett For Brent Russell’s Pakenham Warriors Division 2 men’s basketball team, there are two key words that have the potential to define their season - championship mentality. It’s a term they’re building their season around, and it’s a term they keep coming back to during games. It’s what drives them and keeps them on track. On Sunday - after having dropped a close one the night before away to the Sherbrooke Suns 84-82, and their Round 9 home clash on 20 May to Craigieburn, 85-78 - the Warriors were in a hole. The Mornington Breakers had endured an out-of-sorts start to their season, but the proud club sensed the opportunity to move forward by claiming a big scalp - with the Warriors one of the ladder-leading sides. Leading 14-4 halfway through the first, and with the Warriors playing without star skipper Ben Gaze and lights-out shooter Rob Maartens, the Breakers could smell the blood in the water as they went in for the kill. They seemed far too strong for the Warriors in transition on the offensive end, while praying on the home side’s

But the Warriors came to life in the second - getting the contest back on their terms through a combination of pure grit and toughness, and smarter offensive execution. After trailing 23-18 at the end of the first, Pakenham led 37-35 at the half on a buzzer-beating layup off an offensive board from big man Josh Bjelan. In the rooms at the main break, Warriors coach Russell implored his men to
keep crashing the glass and keep pushing the ball in transition while keeping their cool defensively in the at-times chippy affair. Physical Warriors guard Mike Godfrey has long had a reputation of willing to put his body on the line for the cause, and the weekend was no different. Entering the contest with a bump below his eye already, Godfrey suffered a nasty cut to the head during the third term. He’d already drained two big-
time threes for the quarter, and refused to be down and out - instead coming to the bench only to be taped up so he could return to the action. It’s the type of toughness that coincides with the Warriors’ championship mentality. Pakenham led 60-48 with just a quarter left to play and ultimately ran away with a commanding 32-point win, 86-54 after holding the Breakers to a staggering six points in the final term. While Bjelan finished with a near double-double with 17 points and 9 boards, stand-in skipper Brad Bridgewater pulled down 9 boards of his own, and Brad Szalek (12 points and 4 boards) had a huge impact on both sides of the ball as did Trent Lee, Craig Drew, and Lee Belton (playing in his second game of the day). But it was offensiveminded guard Nick Ross who proved the game-winner, finishing with 24 points on 57 per cent from the field and 44 per cent beyond the arc. Earlier on Sunday, Belton played the role of a flame thrower on the offensive side of the ball for the Warriors’ Division 2 Youth League men’s team - lighting Mornington up for 33 points on 12 of 19 shooting and five of 10 from deep in 40 breathtaking minutes on court. The Warriors led by just one point,
39-38, at half time and the two sides continued to go back and forth through the third. Some outstanding ball pressure throughout the last kept Pakenham ahead in the physical game before the Warriors ultimately closed it out 77-61. Matt Berkec was a strong presence on the glass for the home side, picking up 10 rebounds, while Tyrone Tonkin finished with 12 points and 8 boards, and big Lewis Newman 8 points and 8 boards. In the first game of Sunday’s tripleheader at The Colosseum, Pakenham’s Youth League Division 2 women’s team lost to the Breakers by just eight points, 65-57. Ellie Coutts had her struggles from the field but continued her outstanding season to date, recording yet another stat sheet-stuffing triple-double with 13 points, 11 boards, 10 steals, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. The Youth League women’s side, which currently sits third in the standings behind the Casey Cavaliers and Sunbury Jets, will this Saturday host Sherbrooke at Cardinia Life from 5pm. Simo Pajdic’s Youth League Men’s side has the weekend off, while Russell’s senior men’s side hosts Camberwell - also on Saturday - from 7pm.

Young Narre Warren East local student William Clemens is making his dream a reality. The 13-year-old passionate soccer star has been named in the Soccer Federation Victoria 7-A-Side State Squad Program, an outstanding achievement. 7-A-Side soccer is a variation to soccer that caters for people with cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, stroke and vision impairment. It follows traditional FIFA rules - however - the soccer pitch is smaller, with only seven plays per side, one handed throw ins and there is no offside rule. Players are classified according to their disability - C5 have poor muscle control, C8 have minimal physical effects Will is classed as C7. Will, a Year 7 student at Haileybury’s Berwick campus, trains and plays with Berwick City, and has also been playing for three years at Northcote City Soccer Club, which was the only 7-A-Side disability team in Melbourne. The Clemens family have now started up a disability team with the Berwick Soccer Club, designed to give kids with disabilities the opportunity to play soccer, have fun and live an active lifestyle. It also gives kids the possibility of making both the Victorian and Paralympics teams, something Will’s mother Joanne believes her son can achieve.

to be a striker because I could have a possibility of scoring a goal.” He wanted to thank a certain person who has helped him along the journey to get him to where he is now. “I want to thank my mum because she introduced me to soccer and pushes me to make my dreams happen,” he said. They’ve got the power By David Nagel Berwick and Cranbourne have consolidated themselves as the teams to beat in the South East Football Netball League this year after disposing of fellow premiership aspirants on Saturday. The Blues and Eagles have played off for the last two titles, Berwick supreme in 2015 before the Eagles reversed the result to end a heartbreaking run of four consecutive grand final defeats last year. After the weekend’s results showdown number three looks likely. Berwick produced its best football of the season to down Doveton by 49 points in the top-of-the-table clash at Robinson Oval. The Wickers weathered an early storm from the Doves, who led by 16 points at quarter time, before clicking into gear, kicking 15 goals to five to run away with the win. Brody Connelly was sensational for the Wickers, kicking six goals and benefitting greatly from a dominant midfield and half-back line. Skipper Madi Andrews, former
Melbourne midfielder James Magner, and youngster Bailey Asher were superb through the middle, while class acts like Michael Johnson, Ash Smith and Michael Riseley repelled the Doves’ best attacking forays. Clayton McCartney was dangerous early with two goals for the Doves while ruckman-turned-keydefender Frank D’Agostino was also impressive. Cranbourne was just as emphatic, overcoming a plucky Beaconsfield and windy conditions to score a 48-point victory at Casey Fields. Beacy started with the wind, with two goals to first-gamer Riley Verbi and another to Troy McDermott opening up an early advantage. But Cranbourne gradually took control, wrestling back command over the next two quarters before putting an ailing opponent to bed. The reigning champs kicked 6.5 to 1.2 in the final quarter, their fitness levels surprising considering their big-bodied reputation. “Don’t underestimate our pace, we’ve injected quite a bit into this team over the last couple of years,”
said Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey, in response to a comment about the bigger bodies. “I’ll back our fitness in, and these days games open up after half time, there’s normally an arm wrestle and then they open up.” Cranbourne spread the load beautifully on the weekend, nippy types like Ryan Jones, Khaled Kandakji and Zak Roscoe kicking two each, with key-positioned mid Shaun Marusic also chiming in with a couple. Dillan Bass created plenty of run for the winners while Ryan Bromley, Corey Walker and Daniel Battaglin were just as effective for Beacy. Tooradin welcomed two key inclusions for their first games of the season on Saturday and Setanta O’hAilpin and Nathan Page played massive roles in a 147-point thumping of Hampton Park. O’hAilpin, the former Carlton and GWS tall, kicked 12 goals on debut for the Seagulls while Page, returning from a nasty hamstring injury, helped himself to nine of the best in a rotation through the midfield.
“We really couldn’t have done anything more than what we did,” Tooradin coach Lachie Gillespie said. “We took their best shot early and then played really good football for four quarters. How the form stacks up we’ll wait and see, but we’ll gain a lot of confidence from that performance.” The Seagulls struggled to shake free in the first quarter but soon took command of the contest with a 10.3 to 3.1 second term. They backed that up with nine goals to two in the third before kicking five unanswered goals in the last. And Narre Warren scored a 67-point win over an improving Pakenham. Trent Papworth, Trent Cody, and Aaron Wilson kicked three each for the Magpies who kicked 12 goals to three after half time. Emerging ruckman Liam Tyrrell was joined by pocket-sized dynamo Jake Barclay and Sam Blackwood as the Lions’ best contributors.
Doves on fire show how the Eagles fare By David Nagel We are about to find out a lot more about the true credentials of Doveton after the free-scoring Doves won a high-scoring contest,57-51, against Berwick on Saturday. The Doves leap-frogged Cranbourne into fourth position with the win, but face two of the top three, Tooradin and Narre Warren, before the half-way point of the season. Coach Liz Edwards believes her team is more than ready to match it with the better teams in the competition. “It’s all about sticking to the basics for us, scoring from our centre passes, not wasting possession, just keeping the pressure on the opposition by scoring at every opportunity,” Edwards said. The Doves exploded out of the blocks in the first quarter against Berwick on Saturday, with Rahni Samason (goal shooter) and Shae Gee (goal attack) combining beautifully in the attacking ring and taking full advantage of Hayley Stewart’s dominant form through the midcourt. That opening burst proved crucial for the Doves, leading by seven at quarter time and maintaining that advantage as the game unfolded. Berwick continue to show signs of improvement and obviously took a lot of confidence away from last week’s first win of the season against Pakenham. Morgan Thomas (goal keeper) did well before handing over to the impressive Abuk Kenyang in the second half, while Emily Pratt, Olivia Macente, Sarah Nash, Renae Gill and Caitlin Anthony all shared their time through the midcourt. Beaconsfield can put its feet up for this week’s bye with a big smile on its face after a tough eight-goal, 42-34, win over Cranbourne at Casey Fields. Cranbourne’s 11-10 quarter-time lead was turned into a five-goal deficit at half time before extending it to 11 at the final break. Beaconsfield scored 25 goals to 13 in the second and third quarters to take full control of the match.

Tooradin made the biggest statement of the weekend with a thumping 52-14 victory over Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. The Seagulls made travelling look easy, packing away the four points with a dominant 14-3 opening quarter. The Seagulls defenders were outstanding with Ebony Dolan and Bec Kinna allowing the Redbacks a maximum of just four goals in any one quarter. Shona Wells and Jess Maher were brilliant through the middle for the winners who taught the Redbacks a netball lesson. Hampton Park will need to rebound strongly against Pakenham this week after its poorest performance of the season. Shannon Rennison and Karli Foster did well to restrict the damage done by the undefeated Seagulls and could their heads high. And Narre Warren has overcome a strong first-quarter challenge from Pakenham to run away with a 59-30 victory at Kalora Park. The Lions matched it with the reigning champs early, trailing 1110 at the first break on the back of some stellar contributions from Emma Jones (WA), Kate McGowan (GK) and Keely Wright (GD). But the Magpies have class all over the court, and it started to show after quarter time. They hit back with 12 goals to five in the second term and unleashed their full power with 20 goals to six in the final stanza. Gabby Dwyer (GS) scored 40 goals for the Magpies while a brilliant midcourt led by Leigh Taylor, Bec Potalej, Erin Clark and Britt Mashado overwhelmed the Lions in the dying stages.

Baleno has room to impress By Alistair Kennedy The new Baleno comes in two specification levels - GL and GLX. GL is priced at $16,990 with manual gearbox and $17,990 in automatic mode. There’s a healthy $5000 extra for the auto-only GLX that adds a more fuelefficient engine, LED headlights, alloy wheels, foglights, push-button start, digital climate control, rear disc brakes, steering wheel reach adjustment, and gear shift paddles. Baleno GL and Swift share engines and transmissions but Baleno does have one point of distinction in that its GLX variant is powered by a modern threecylinder 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine of the type that is popular in European cars. GL has the choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic; GLX is six-speed auto only. Baleno’s designers have ensured that maximum use is made of its larger external dimensions and it really does feel like a larger vehicle inside. By reducing door liner intrusion into the front seats they’ve been able to increase front seat shoulder room and there’s enough rear knee and legroom to allow two adults to travel in relative comfort. Boot space is an impressive 355 litres which can be expanded to 756 litres with the rear seatbacks folded and even more through removable side trims that increase the lateral dimensions.

Baleno GL’s steering wheel can only be adjusted for height, GLX also gets reach adjustment. Display is through a seven-inch colour touchscreen located in the middle of the dashboard and split into four components that can be set to each driver’s preference with a choice of six different set-ups. on the left of the screen that needs to be tapped continuously and so causes far too much driver inattention. Fortunately there is a steering wheel volume control. Bluetooth pairing is simple and intuitive and we were tuned in within a minute. There are smartphone interfaces with ApplePlay and MirrorLink, the latter an independent, non-proprietary system that caters for Android phones. As is the growing trend there’s no
CD player. Satellite navigation is standard on both Baleno variants. Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic stability program, hill hold assist, reversing camera, daytime running lights, and twin IsoFix child seat anchor points. The latest Baleno has a new, lighter and stronger platform that makes use of a number of extra-high-tensile materials
adding structural rigidity and therefore occupant safety. Our test car was the 1.0-litre BoosterJet auto. We’d like to have seen a manual version but commercial reality ensured that it wouldn’t be viable in auto-centric Australia. There is some turbo lag at low revs but once past that the little Suzuki is a delightful little car to drive, almost living up to its engine’s name. Around town its small dimensions made it easy to slip through traffic and to park while it cruised comfortably on the motorway segment of our test. Its light weight (975 kg) and strong platform provides an excellent powerto-weight ratio for ride and handling that’s right up with the best in the segment. Fuel consumption during our week in the Baleno averaged out at 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres, not that far above the listed 5.2 L/100km. Merc is bigger on style By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Mercedes-Benz’s new E-Class coupe range is larger than before and is almost a full four-seater rather than a two-plus-two as in previous generations. This added usability hasn’t spoiled its style, though. The low, sleek proportions work well, it has a low grille, long bonnet with power domes, and the cabin sits further back. All four side windows are frameless and there is no B-pillar. New E-Class coupe is 123 mm longer, 74 mm wider, and sits on a 113 mm longer wheelbase. Rear legroom up by 74 mm and shoulder room 34 mm more. Australian drivers love their sporty models so all new E-Class coupes have an AMG Line body styling package. The widescreen cockpit is one of our favourite features of the new EClass sedans and naturally it’s incorporated into the coupe. The range opens with the E 220 d (diesel) coupe with a 2.0-litre fourcylinder engine producing 143 kW and 400 Nm. Drive is to the rear wheels through a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic. Inside, even this lowest cost model has leather trim and the Mercedes’ Comand infotainment system with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The Driver Assistance safety package includes parking assist to make life easy as coupes are usually harder to see out of than sedans and wagons. The E 300 is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 180 kW and 370 Nm.
Shape of the new Mercedes E-Class coupe will be its biggest selling feature, but it s also a practical car. It, too, uses the 9G-Tronic automatic. Over and above the E 220 diesel Coupe’s specification it has 20-inch AMG alloy wheels, a sports exhaust system, Air Body Control air suspension, heated front seats and MultiBeam LED headlights. The topline model, the MercedesBenz E 400 4Matic (all-wheel-drive) has a 3.0-litre, V6-cylinder bi-turbo petrol engine producing 245 kW and 480 Nm. Transmission is by a sportier version of the nine-speed 9G-Tronic
automatic. With all that grunt and the advantage of driving through all four wheels it’s a full-on sports model that gets from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. Additions over the E 300 coupe include a panoramic glass sunroof, 13-speaker, 590-Watt Burmester surround sound system, head-up display, metallic paint and privacy glass. To launch the new E-Class coupe Mercedes has come up with an Edition 1 Package.
