On another raid last year, police seized five lost or stolen bank cards, two identity cards, GHB, suspected crystal-meth, pharmaceutical tablets and knuckle-dusters. Hagen was also charged with three petrol drive-offs in a stolen car this year and the attempted theft of a Nissan Patrol from a Clyde North home’s driveway in September. During the latter, Hagen threatened residents with a crowbar to stop them giving chase. In December 2015, ice pipes as well as illicit drugs such as ecstasy, meth, and 1,4-butanediol were seized from his home after he was hospitalised with breathing difficulties. Hagen’s lawyer said the accused’s criminal history had only begun in 2016, despite being a “functioning” drug user for the past 11 years. Hagen was unable to apply for Dandenong Drug Court due to a full waiting list, the lawyer said. Magistrate Pauline Spencer took into account Hagen’s “good” rehabilitation prospects and that his offending was fuelled by drug addiction. But there was a need to deter firearms out in the community, particularly mixed with drug use, she said. “And particularly when you’re in a vehicle in the judicial precinct and carrying a loaded shotgun in our community. “If you choose to carry a weapon, to carry a gun, you’ll go to jail. It needs to be a clear message.” Ms Spencer said the “significant amount” of proceeds-of-crime also needed to be punished with additional jail time. Hagen was jailed for two years including a non-parole period of up to 12 months. He was also disqualified from driving for six months and fined $2000.

A Cranbourne man parked outside Dandenong police station with a loaded, doublebarrelled sawn-off shotgun, a balaclava, a hockey mask and the drug ‘ice’ had no “malicious intention”, a court was told. Joshua Hagen, 32, was intercepted by police in a car with two females in Langhorne Street on 2 March, while his mate sat inside the station’s cells. Hours earlier, police had launched a morning raid of Hagen’s bedroom in his absence. On his arrest, Hagen told police that he was merely dropping off clothes to his locked-up mate. He didn’t want to leave the gun - loaded and with five spare cartridges on hand - lying around his father’s home, he told them. Appearing by video link, Hagen pleaded guilty to a suite of charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 May. The most serious was being a prohibited person with a loaded firearm in public, and possessing a firearm without a serial number. “All of the (seized) items were believed to be for criminal intent,” prosecutor Senior Constable Ben Hodson told the court. “He had a loaded double-barrelled shotgun in front of Dandenong police station and was also in possession of methamphetamine. “It doesn’t go well together.” Hagen’s lawyer admitted the “suspicious” circumstances but said the accused had merely given a lift to his mate’s pregnant partner to visit him in the cells. “He was going to wait and drive her back home. “He has instructed very clearly that there was no malicious intention.” During the earlier house raid, police found an array of ammunition including loaded magazines suitable for an AK-47 assault rifle, as well as camouflage top and pants and a security firm’s shirt. There was also a bevy of suspected stolen goods, such as 51 sets of car keys, a box of watches and watch faces, and other jewellery.

Probe call over mayor By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey mayor Sam Aziz may be investigated by the State Government for an alleged breach of the councillor codeof-conduct in threatening to sue Berwick Springs roundabout opponents. The investigation’s proponent Judith Couacaud Graley told State Parliament on 25 May that Cr Aziz should be open to opposing views, not threatening and silencing concerned locals. “They are concerned about having to fork out hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal costs just because they dared to speak up for their community. “After seriously overreaching indeed, it could be that the mayor is taking himself just a little bit too seriously. “One could question whether the mayor is using his position of power, or maybe even council resources, to at-

provisions that councillors treated “all persons with respect” and had “due regard to the opinions, beliefs, rights and responsibilities of ... other persons”. The code also requires councillors to try to “ensure that public resources are used prudently and solely in the public interest.” Ms Graley called on Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins to investigate the matter. “The minister has said that she will follow up on my very serious request because mayors and councillors have a duty to treat their constituents with respect,“ Ms Graley later told Star News. Recently, Cr Aziz sent legal letters to several people who posted on a Facebook page against a proposed roundabout across a bluestone-wall estate gateway at Greaves Road and Berwick Springs Promenade, Narre Warren.

The letters demanded an apology “in wording to be agreed”, and the payment of Cr Aziz’s “reasonable” legal costs as well as “adequate” damages compensation. Cr Aziz, who was unwilling to comment on the lawsuits themselves, said his actions were lawful and “absolutely not” in breach of the code. He returned fire against Ms Graley for a “political stunt” attempting to deflect from her dipping “internal polling”. It drew comparisons with a similar “stunt” in 2016 when the State Government-installed Monitor gave a “glowing report” of Casey’s governance, he said. “Judith would be better off spending time on the infrastructure needs of the City of Casey, which her government has failed miserably in delivering upon.”

Cr Aziz said his door was “always open” for productive talks on infrastructure, crime reduction and decongesting roads. Cr Aziz stated it was “definitely not on my radar” to stand for the next state and federal elections. “I’ve got a job to do for the next three years to deliver for the people of Springfield Ward.” Berwick Springs spokesman Michael Ball said he didn’t hold a “personal grudge” against Cr Aziz during the protests. “I believe residents and myself have a right to hold all decision makers accountable for poor performance and handling of this issue. “I expect as a local council they acknowledge the concerns of local residents and treat residents respectfully even if residents hold opposing views.”

Two young heroes from the Cranbourne area have had their bravery recognised at the 13th annual Junior Triple Zero Hero awards ceremony. Salvatore Leone, 7, from Cranbourne North and Paige Weidermann, 12, from Lynbrook were both awarded Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) awards for calling triple-zero and staying calm under immense pressure. Salvatore was given the award for calling emergency services after his mother had an anaphylactic reaction and collapsed on the floor. The young boy not only used an epi-pen to try to revive his mother, but also called triple-zero and cared for her until paramedics arrived. Under similar circumstances, 12-year-old Paige showed composure beyond her years when she called for an ambulance when her dad suffered chest pains. Paige was able to talk the ESTA phone operator through what was happening and guide emergency services to her house to get help for her father. Paige and Salvatore were two of 51 children to receive awards for their quick thinking and responsible actions. Minister for Emergency Services, James Merlino said the awards showed the importance of teaching young children how to call for help and how to recognise when emergency services are needed. “Victoria’s brave Junior Triple Zero Heroes remained remarkably cool, calm and collected and are shining examples of how preparing

Conquest of the comics By Victoria Stone-Meadows DEZA-CON III was back with a vengeance this year, with over 400 people attending the third incarnation of the region’s only pop culture event. Cosplayers, gaming enthusiasts and comic book lovers all turned out to the Narre Community Learning Centre on Saturday 27 May to share their love of all things pop culture. Event organiser and father of Deza-Con Roy Condeza said the third Deza-Con event was a great success. “We smashed it,” he said. “It was great; we got a bit over 400 people come through which is a really good turnout and more than previous years.” There were events within events at the convention, with the cosplay competition bringing out the best costume adaptions and recreations in the area. Missbear Haven (Annika Godfrey) took out the top prize for her steam punk Mary Poppins adaptation. “The idea came at the start of the year because my daughter and I wanted to be involved in steam punk themed Disney characters and my costume was originally for Supanova,” she said. “The costume just seemed to work; Mary Poppins is such a magical character and seems to

be timeless and I love the movie so I feel like I kind of connect to character.” “Since I’ve been in the cosplay community, I get nicknamed the cosplay mum because I take my daughter with me to most cons and we do costumes together - she had a ball at Deza-Con.” There were also local comic book artists set up in the newly introduced Artists’ Alley as well as a Nintendo Game Zone set up by Nintensive Gaming. The proceeds from the refreshment crew were donated to local humanitarian group Transit and the proceeds from the Nintensive Games Zine donated to the Peter Mac Cancer Research Centre. Mr Condeza said he was looking forward to bringing the event back later this year. “We’ll be back again toward the end of this year and I have a few new things in play. I can’t say too much yet but there are exciting things in the works,” he said. Family defies home blaze By Victoria Stone-Meadows A young mother and her six children narrowly escaped with their lives after their Cranbourne North home went up in flames. Emergency services were called to the Newton Drive address shortly before 10pm on Monday 29 May, to find the house fully engulfed in flames. An unattended candle in one of the children’s bedrooms is thought to be the cause of the blaze. CFA District 8 Operations Officer Jim Dore said the fire moved rapidly through the house, and it was important to be careful when using candles inside. “The fire spread quickly through the house and as a result, it has been destroyed,” he said. “Always extinguish candles before leaving home or going to sleep.” “It’s important to only use candles on stable, non-combustible surfaces but to also keep curtains and other items away from open flames at all times.” Ambulance Victoria attended the scene, but luckily no-one was injured.

Dishlickers help the Diggers By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club has made a generous donation to the local RSL for the Anzac Appeal Welfare Fund. The Greyhound Racing Club donated $1000 to the Cranbourne RSL shortly before Anzac Day, as part of a winder show of support from Greyhound Racing Victoria for the RSL.

This is the second year in a row the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club has lent support and donated money to the RSL. The RSL’s Welfare Patriotic Fund raises money through Remembrance Day and gifts from former servicemen and women to help returned veterans adjust back into civilian life. Cranbourne RSL Vice-President Bill Shepherd extended his gratitude to the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club for

their donation. “I and other members here express our gratitude and appreciation,” he said. The racing club also supported the RSL on Anzac Day by selling badges and giving RSL members free drinks and entry to the clubrooms. As part of supporting the RSL, the racing club also allows the RSL access and use of their clubrooms for meetings or members’ catch-ups.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Victorian road toll has risen with the tragic loss of a motorbike rider in Pearcedale over the weekend. Police believe the rider lost control of his bike near the intersection of Pearcedale and Robinsons Roads at about 3.30pm on Saturday 27 May. Road crash investigators surmise the male rider was thrown from his bike when he struck the kerb. Emergency services attempted to resuscitate the man at the scene of the accident, but were unable to and he died at the scene. No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the crash and the rider is yet to be formally identified. The death of the motorbike rider brings the 2017 road toll to 101. At the same time last year, 119 people had been lost on our roads.

Lightning hits power supplies By Victoria Stone-Meadows A lightning strike caused widespread power outages in Cranbourne over the weekend, when the SP Ausnet Cranbourne substation was damaged. The power provider confirmed that lightning hit the substation at about 1.15am on Sunday 28 May, leaving about 2900 customers without power. Perhaps MP Jude Perera should have turned around and looked at the condition of the bus stops that have been added to the station. He might have seen the rubbish and dead shrubs all along them - it would have wiped the smile off his face - then come along in the dark and seen the lights not working. We were told that there was to be an upgrade of bus stops with upgraded security and landscaping - none of which has happened - and now we are to lose more car parking for bus stops. Good idea, but now more people will park on the grass and ruin it in the wet. The ceremony is held to honour the memory of the six million Jews and other victims who perished during the Holocaust. As explained by Josh Frydenberg in 2012, preserving the memories of all those who perished grows more important and urgent as survivors are passing and the memories they imparted fading.” The students and teachers at Alkira Secondary College are determined to ensure that the great loss of these men, women and children is never forgotten. Green thumb goes Swiss The Royal Botanical Gardens Cranbourne will take centre stage in June when its executive director Chris Russell speaks at an international congress in Geneva, Switzerland. This will be the third time Mr Russell has spoken at an international conference about the Cranbourne Gardens and the importance of botanical gardens in general. This year the sixth annual world botanic garden congress will host over 200 representatives of more than 500 botanical gardens from 100 countries around the globe. Go east, young â€™uns By Victoria Stone-Meadows A young couple from Keysborough are bucking the trend of their generation and buying a house and land package in the outer suburbs away from their family homes. Cassandra Farley, 22, and Robert Byron, 27, have bought a house and land package from Burbank Homes in the Clarinda estate in Cranbourne West, despite it being 20 kilometres from the area they are familiar with. An online listing site of home builders and land developers, iBuildNew, commissioned a study conducted by market and social research firm Ipsos of 1,030 Australians asking about housing. The survey results show that 64 per cent of first home buyers are only prepared to look at properties within their suburb of choice or surrounding suburbs. According to iBuildNew, young people are less likely to purchase property or build houses in outer suburbs of Melbourne, let alone regional areas. The statistics also show 22 per cent of first home buyers are considering a new build when securing their first home, with 60 per cent focused on buying an established home or townhouse. At first Ms Farley and Mr Byron were reluctant to move away from family, but the semi-rural setting of Cranbourne West and the affordable house prices drew them to the area. â€œIâ€™m really close with my family so I will definitely still see them,â€? Ms Farley said. â€œJust personally, Iâ€™m not an inner city kind of person and the prices are even more ridiculous in the inner suburbs and you donâ€™t get the space there you get out here.â€?

Ms Farley said. â€œSince we purchased what would be considered a small block, we have compared the prices of similar blocks in similar areas and the price has jumped up $50,000 to $70,000.â€?

â€œThat was one of our main reasons for doing it so young and so quickly; the prices were going to continue to go up.â€? Ms Farley and Mr Byron believe they have made a good financial decision buying in Cranbourne West, despite the area being new and not yet developed. â€œWe considered there are a lot of paddocks still around us but we knew by the time weâ€™re looking to sell and upgrade to something bigger, there would be a lot more infrastructure like parks and shopping centres that would add a lot more value to our property.â€?

The trend of first home buyers being reluctant to purchase a new house in an outer suburb may be due to misinformation, according to iBuildNew CEO Daniel Peterson. â€œThe economic benefit of buying new is not well understood by first home buyers, with real estate agents doing their best to overcomplicate building a new home to retain demand for established homes,â€? he said. â€œThe reality is building new doesnâ€™t need to be difficult, and the economics for a first home buyer are really compelling.â€?

Hush-hush on land By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Council is remaining tight-lipped on what it plans to spend almost a quarter of its proposed capital works budget on. Council has allocated almost $31 million for future land acquisitions in its 2017-'18 capital works program, but will not say what land it is planning to acquire. The allocation of funding for land acquisition forms 24 per cent of the councilâ€™s $124 million capital works program in its proposed 2017-'18 budget. However, council has refused to provide a breakdown of the land it is targeting to buy in the upcoming financial year. Councilâ€™s Manager of Service and Asset Planning Wayne Mack said details of the land considered for purchase were too sensitive to release to the public. â€œCouncil has an annual land acquisition program that provides funding to purchase property and land, to ensure we have the infrastructure and facilities that the community will require in the future,â€? he said. â€œThe details of the program are not itemised due to the sensitive nature of land acquisition.â€? â€œThis ensures a due and fair process is not compromised and property ownersâ€™ rights are respected.â€? Mr Mack did however point to previous land acquisition by council and the benefit it had bought to the communities of Casey. â€œIt is noted that in recent years most of the land acquisition program has focused on the purchase of land to deliver infrastructure in growth areas.â€? Casey Council came under fire earlier this year for attempting to compulsorily acquire land in Narre Warren North that belonged to long-term resident John Foy. After months of negotiations, complaints from residents and state-wide media attention, the council backed down in February this year and allowed Mr Foy to keep his land. Despite repeated requests from Star News, Casey Council refused to supply even an overview or summary of where the land acquisition funds were proposed to be spent.

Smoothing the move A Berwick components manufacturer has been given a $55,000 helping hand to adapt to the national automotive industry shutdown. Australian Precision Technologies (APT) received the grant for a new workforce strategy as part of the State Government’s program to help affected businesses in the automotive supply chain. HUSBAND AND WIFE’S BUILDING EMPIRE RAWDON Hill sales consultant Jillian Craig tells a delightful story about her boss Geoff Hardie, the owner and founder of the company which has been building homes in the south-east for more than 40 years. Jillian was showing potential buyers a Rawdon Hill spec home. As they walked towards the front door they spotted a man working in the garden. “The buyers said ‘we don’t want to interrupt the gardener.’ I said that’s not the gardener, it’s the owner of the company,” said Jillian, laughing. “Those buyers were so impressed.” “I’m not an office person,” chipped in Geoff, clearly amused by the anecdote. Since 1976, Geoff and his wife Sue have overseen the construction of more than 6000 homes throughout the south-east under the Rawdon Hill banner. The company was named after the Dandenong North street in which Sue and Geoff bought their first home. “We had a different name picked out but it was taken so our accountant took it upon himself to pick the name. I have to spell it customers all the time,” Geoff said. Originally from New Zealand, Sue and Geoff came to Australia for an 18 month working holiday in the ’70s. Despite having no qualifications, Geoff got a job in the building industry. “In those days it was easy to become a builder, you didn’t need a licence or anything. We built our first place in Cranbourne in 1976 and we have really gone from there.” He chuckles as he recounts the difference in buyer expectations in the 1970s compared to now. “People wanted 10 squares, three

bedrooms, one bathroom and no garages. Garages were an extra. “We sold that place (in Cranbourne) for $27,500 and still made a profit,” he added, laughing. “Today stamp duty costs more than that.” Geoff has also seen buyer expectations ratchet up decade by decade. “It amazes me. There is a lot of talk at the moment about first home buyers struggling to get into places but when they stop and think about it they want everything in the house, that’s why it costs so much. “Our first house we had we didn’t have carpet on the floors just bare boards because we couldn’t afford it at the time.” Geoff is also amazed by the speed of the growth that continues to transform the City of Casey and neighbouring Cardinia. “Oh yes, that has surprised me. “I have seen it developing over the years, but I didn’t think it would develop as quickly as it has.” In its early days Rawdon Hill was only allowed to build three houses per year. Today the company builds 150 homes a year. At its peak more than 300 families each year were handed the keys to their new Rawdon Hill home. “We pride ourselves on the fact when we finish a house we are prepared to live in it ourselves,” Geoff said. Geoff and Sue, who is the company secretary, employ 22 staff who Geoff describes as “family”. Jillian Craig, who joined Rawdon Hill nine years ago, agrees. “I say to people all the time, it’s a family business and it really is. It’s lovely. You feel like you are part of the family,” she said. “Geoff knows what is going on in the

company all the time.” Today Geoff has scaled back his involvement, confining himself to site inspections before projects start. He also dabbles in unit development “not as a business but because I enjoy it”. He said Sue is “trying to get me to retire”. The couple are “impulsive travellers” and enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, who are five and seven. On Wednesday afternoons Geoff can be found on the golf course working on his handicap. “I’m not sure that I’ll retire for a while, I am happy contributing at the moment. I do little projects myself within the company

structure, unit projects and that sort of thing.” Near the Rawdon Hill sales office in Berwick Waters, is a half completed house by collapsed builder Watersun Homes. In contrast, Rawdon Hill continues on a sure financial footing four decades from its humble beginnings in Scott Street, Cranbourne. Geoff maintains the secret to Rawdon Hill’s success is simple. “Just be nice,” he said, smiling. “A hands-on approach also helps. “I’ve had no regrets over the 40 years, that’s for sure.” For sales enquiries contact 9702 4477.

Chasers get the rewards Cranbourne South trainer Ashlee Terry experienced her biggest thrill in greyhound racing when Maja Mahi Mahi brilliantly won the $145,000 Group 1 Sapphire Crown at Sandown Cup night last Thursday. “We’ve run second and third in a couple of group races but never won one,” the 26-year-old said. “I don’t really know how to describe it to be honest.” Maja Mahi Mahi was winless in four starts at Sandown Park coming into the keenly contested final. On the same night that Fanta Bale laid claim to being one of the sport’s greatest ever chasers by winning the $250,000 RSN Sandown Cup in breathtaking fashion, Maja Mahi Mahi began well from box two in the Sapphire Crown - holding her position near the rail in a frantic dash to the first turn. She moved off the rail through the turn, allowing Group 2 Laurels winner Up Hill Jill to rail up beneath her. But she refused to relinquish the lead and off the back straight had established a two-length lead. Up Hill Jill came again but Maja Mahi Mahi had all of the answers, holding on to win by half a length in 29.67. “I wanted the pink (box eight) but then the way the box draw turned out I was really happy with her drawn on the inside because there was going to be a mad charge to the first turn. I hoped she’d hold the rail and she did,” Terry explained. “When she was sitting up with the others I was just hoping she’d hold on. She just kept kicking.” Maja Mahi Mahi arrived from New South Wales in January and is the only greyhound in the kennel Terry trains for other people. The owners, the Middle Tote Syndicate, brought a large support team to cheer her on in the Group 1 feature. “Andrew, who I live with, has been mates with the owners for 10 or 12 years and they gave us a call,” Terry said. “They wanted a change of kennel and bring her to Victoria and see how she’d go. We got lucky I guess.

I think we’ll be celebrating tonight.” In Thursday’s main event, the crowd was simply buzzing as one of the best fields ever assembled for the great race headed to the boxes, and the 2017 running of the Sandown Cup delivered everything greyhound racing fans hoped it would. Western Australian chaser Teddy Monelli led early before Dundee Osprey swept around the field to take a commanding lead. Fanta Bale was denied a gap between runners and shuffled back to

midfield, while the odds-on favourite Burn One Down settled in a prominent position on the rail. Fanta Bale and Midnight Elsa made their moves down the back straight but with 150 metres to go, Fanta Bale still spotted the lamplighter a four length margin. But the tenacious little chaser railed brilliantly running for home to surge past the gallant Dundee Osprey and score by half a length in 41.87. The win came as a surprise to trainer Robert Britton who believed Fanta Bale would have to find the lead early to win the world’s richest race for stayers.

Fanta Bale could be considered one of greyhound racing’s greatest ever chasers following a stunning win in this year’s Sandown Cup. “We keep looking for reasons why she can’t win, but she keeps finding a way to prove us wrong,” Britton said following the win. “When Midnight Elsa headed her I thought we were on for place prize money only, but that’s what she does,

she’ll put her head out and keep trying. “I’ve had a lot of real good dogs over a lot of years, but I haven’t had what I’d call out an out champion. You’ve really got to put her in that league now.”

Young Narre Warren East local student William Clemens is making his dream a reality. The 13-year-old passionate soccer star has been named in the Soccer Federation Victoria 7-A-Side State Squad Program, an outstanding achievement. 7-A-Side soccer is a variation to soccer that caters for people with cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, stroke and vision impairment. It follows traditional FIFA rules - however - the soccer pitch is smaller, with only seven plays per side, one handed throw ins and there is no offside rule. Players are classified according to their disability - C5 have poor muscle control, C8 have minimal physical effects - Will is classed as C7. Will, a Year 7 student at Haileybury’s

Berwick campus, trains and plays with Berwick City, and has also been playing for three years at Northcote City Soccer Club, which was the only 7-A-Side disability team in Melbourne. The Clemens family have now started up a disability team with the Berwick Soccer Club, designed to give kids with disabilities the opportunity to play soccer, have fun and live an active lifestyle. It also gives kids the possibility of making both the Victorian and Paralympics teams, something Will’s mother Joanne believes her son can achieve. “He has his eye on keeping up with Victorian Squad Training, improving his skills and in the future he dreams of playing for the Pararoo’s Australian team (the Australian Paralympic team),” she said. “I believe his determination and passion

will get him there.” The youngster is over the moon to be selected for the 7-A-Side program, and can’t wait to do what he does best - kicking goals. “I feel very excited,” he said. “I enjoy kicking the ball and learning new tricks - I want to be a striker because I could have a possibility of scoring a goal.” He wanted to thank a certain person who has helped him along the journey to get him to where he is now. “I want to thank my mum because she introduced me to soccer and pushes me to make my dreams happen,” he said. ‘Rays are half done DANDENONG STINGRAYS MID SEASON REVIEW With the TAC Cup taking the weekend off for Development Round, which saw some Dandenong players featuring for Vic Country, NICK CREELY has cast his eye over the first eight rounds of the season for the Stingrays, as 2017 almost reaches its half way point. LADDER POSITION: 6th (4-4) BEST AND FAIREST: No player has relished more midfield time than Mitch Cotter, who is a contested ball animal and one that loves to lay a bone crunching tackle. The 17-year-old from Doveton has carried the Rays’ midfield brigade, and flourished with more responsibility. Cotter has played every game so far this season, averaging around the 20 disposal mark. More importantly, his tackle numbers have been enormous, with an average of almost six per game. Angus Patterson - the tall key defender - has also been excellent, and would be a close second at this stage of the year. BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE: In round four against Sandringham at Frankston Park, draft prospect Hunter Clark played a colossal of a game in a losing side. The midfielder racked up 25 disposals, seven tackles but, more importantly, kicked two goals laced with class. Just before three-quarter time, Clark streamed out of the centre, shrugged two tackles and a launched a brilliant 60-metre kick straight through the goals. He then backed it up with a

clever snap only minutes into the last quarter. He showed exactly why he will be on an AFL list in 2018. LEADING GOALKICKER: Jai Nanscawen (14) SURPRISE PACKET: Developing forward Riley D’Arcy may be out with injury at the moment, but he has sure made an impression this season, and out of relative obscurity. After playing a handful of games as a bottom ager in 2016, D’Arcy has begun the 2017 season in brilliant form - in just six games so far, he has scored 12 goals. More importantly, he kicked four goals in a near best-on performance for Vic Country in the second trial game. BEST TEAM PERFORMANCE: With their backs against the wall in what was almost a mini final, the Stingrays finally found their mojo in round eight, crushing Eastern Ranges by 63-points at Shepley Oval. With the prospect of heading into the weekend’s bye with a 3-5 record, the Rays flicked the switch and played a tough, relentless brand of football. After taking a narrow threepoint lead into quarter time, the Rays kicked six goals in the matter of 15 minutes to steal the game away in one foul swoop. Sturdy midfielder Mitch Cotter (24 disposals, 12 tackles) was among the best, while rangy half back Mason De Wit (31 disposals) was a nightmare for the Ranges. WORST TEAM PERFORMANCE: Although round six broke the hearts of the Rays with a nailbiting three-point loss to

The very next round, the Oakleigh Chargers blew the Rays away in a dominant 89-point win and just never looked likely. Although they were missing a large chunk of their cavalry, the performance was a disappointing one, but a game that Craig Black and his side learnt a lot from, as shown by their performance the very next week. WHAT HAS GONE WRONG? Although it is inevitable with all the TAC Cup clubs, more often than not the Rays haven’t had their best players available, and that has caused a spike in performance.

The Rays’ two most lucrative players Oscar Clavarino and Luke Davies-Uniacke - have been caught up with school football commitments, and only played one game each. Adding to this, some overages (Bailey Morrish and Mason De Wit) have had the chance to make their VFL debuts. Although this is a positive for the club in getting games into others and phasing these players into elite football, it is the main reason they have been inconsistent. WHAT HAS GONE RIGHT? With a number of players missing, a lot have stepped up and showed immense promise. Cotter and Patterson are the two who have

relished their chances the most, but others such as Will Hamill, Lachlan Young, Ali Zijai and Dylan Morris are all exciting. With Craig Black getting games into these kids, the results will slowly turn in a positive trajectory after the bye. WHAT THE COACH SAYS: “We’ve played 41 players this year, but we think that’s a positive sign because it gives kids an opportunity - we just have to keep working on our ball use and our skills like any other under-18 kid - it’s a long season, finals are still a long time away, and I believe we’re on the right path.” - Craig Black

VICTORIAN WOMENS FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 3 Cranbourne remain winless after falling in tough conditions to Geelong by seven points at Frenken Homes Oval on Saturday, but there were plenty of positives for the Eagles. The Cats started like a house on fire when Michelle Fedele and Hannah Burchell scored early goals to take a 13-point lead into quarter time, before the weather wreaked havoc on the contest and meant scoring became difficult. Torrential rain and dangerous winds meant the game completely changed in flow, with the match resembling soccer at times as the ball became a bar of soap, with gaining territory the main priority for both sides. Without a goal for the game, the Eagles all of a sudden sparked into action with five minutes left in the match, with Leah Olsen and Stephanie Brown snagging majors within two minutes of each other to narrow the margin to fivepoints. The Eagles were pumped up and with all the momentum to take them over the line. But the Cats dug deep to claim the four points in the tense final moments, defending solidly and find a way to keep its unbeaten run alive. There were plenty of positives for the Eagles - they kept the Cats to just the single goal

Only two weeks ago, Eagles coach Sein Clearihan declared his side was still a couple of weeks off from being at its best, saying they are still trying to find their feet as a team. “The next couple of weeks we just need to grind it out, and in Round 5 or 6 we will start hitting our straps,” he said “We are heading in the right direction - it’s all about growth too, and developing the young girls to play to structure at this level.” Potential AFLW draftee Darcy Guttridge was a standout for the Eagles, with the gun youngster continuing to shine at the state level, while Bianca Jakobsson, Kim Cunico and Cara Moody were important in a vi-

They’ve got the power By David Nagel Berwick and Cranbourne have consolidated themselves as the teams to beat in the South East Football Netball League this year after disposing of fellow premiership aspirants on Saturday. The Blues and Eagles have played off for the last two titles, Berwick supreme in 2015 before the Eagles reversed the result to end a heartbreaking run of four consecutive grand final defeats last year. After the weekend’s results showdown number three looks likely. Berwick produced its best football of the season to down Doveton by 49 points in the top-of-the-table clash at Robinson Oval. The Wickers weathered an early storm from the Doves, who led by 16 points at quarter time, before clicking into gear, kicking 15 goals to five to run away with the win. Brody Connelly was sensational for the Wickers, kicking six goals and benefitting greatly from a dominant midfield and half-back line. Skipper Madi Andrews, former

Melbourne midfielder James Magner, and youngster Bailey Asher were superb through the middle, while class acts like Michael Johnson, Ash Smith and Michael Riseley repelled the Doves’ best attacking forays. Clayton McCartney was dangerous early with two goals for the Doves while ruckman-turned-keydefender Frank D’Agostino was also impressive. Cranbourne was just as emphatic, overcoming a plucky Beaconsfield and windy conditions to score a 48-point victory at Casey Fields. Beacy started with the wind, with two goals to first-gamer Riley Verbi and another to Troy McDermott opening up an early advantage. But Cranbourne gradually took control, wrestling back command over the next two quarters before putting an ailing opponent to bed. The reigning champs kicked 6.5 to 1.2 in the final quarter, their fitness levels surprising considering their big-bodied reputation. “Don’t underestimate our pace, we’ve injected quite a bit into this team over the last couple of years,”

said Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey, in response to a comment about the bigger bodies. “I’ll back our fitness in, and these days games open up after half time, there’s normally an arm wrestle and then they open up.” Cranbourne spread the load beautifully on the weekend, nippy types like Ryan Jones, Khaled Kandakji and Zak Roscoe kicking two each, with key-positioned mid Shaun Marusic also chiming in with a couple. Dillan Bass created plenty of run for the winners while Ryan Bromley, Corey Walker and Daniel Battaglin were just as effective for Beacy. Tooradin welcomed two key inclusions for their first games of the season on Saturday and Setanta O’hAilpin and Nathan Page played massive roles in a 147-point thumping of Hampton Park. O’hAilpin, the former Carlton and GWS tall, kicked 12 goals on debut for the Seagulls while Page, returning from a nasty hamstring injury, helped himself to nine of the best in a rotation through the midfield.

“We really couldn’t have done anything more than what we did,” Tooradin coach Lachie Gillespie said. “We took their best shot early and then played really good football for four quarters. How the form stacks up we’ll wait and see, but we’ll gain a lot of confidence from that performance.” The Seagulls struggled to shake free in the first quarter but soon took command of the contest with a 10.3 to 3.1 second term. They backed that up with nine goals to two in the third before kicking five unanswered goals in the last. And Narre Warren scored a 67-point win over an improving Pakenham. Trent Papworth, Trent Cody, and Aaron Wilson kicked three each for the Magpies who kicked 12 goals to three after half time. Emerging ruckman Liam Tyrrell was joined by pocket-sized dynamo Jake Barclay and Sam Blackwood as the Lions’ best contributors.

Doves on fire show how the Eagles fare By David Nagel We are about to find out a lot more about the true credentials of Doveton after the free-scoring Doves won a high-scoring contest,57-51, against Berwick on Saturday. The Doves leap-frogged Cranbourne into fourth position with the win, but face two of the top three, Tooradin and Narre Warren, before the half-way point of the season. Coach Liz Edwards believes her team is more than ready to match it with the better teams in the competition. “It’s all about sticking to the basics for us, scoring from our centre passes, not wasting possession, just keeping the pressure on the opposition by scoring at every opportunity,” Edwards said. The Doves exploded out of the blocks in the first quarter against Berwick on Saturday, with Rahni Samason (goal shooter) and Shae Gee (goal attack) combining beautifully in the attacking ring and taking full advantage of Hayley Stewart’s dominant form through the midcourt. That opening burst proved crucial for the Doves, leading by seven at quarter time and maintaining that advantage as the game unfolded. Berwick continue to show signs of improvement and obviously took a lot of confidence away from last week’s first win of the season against Pakenham. Morgan Thomas (goal keeper) did well before handing over to the impressive Abuk Kenyang in the second half, while Emily Pratt, Olivia Macente, Sarah Nash, Renae Gill and Caitlin Anthony all shared their time through the midcourt. Beaconsfield can put its feet up for this week’s bye with a big smile on its face after a tough eight-goal, 42-34, win over Cranbourne at Casey Fields. Cranbourne’s 11-10 quarter-time lead was turned into a five-goal deficit at half time before extending it to 11 at the final break. Beaconsfield scored 25 goals to 13 in the second and third quarters to take full control of the match.

Rylee Nelson (centre) was outstanding for Beaconsfield through the midcourt, while Bianca Sanzaro (GS), Dani Cameron (GD), Ash Gill (wing attack) and Kate Murphy (wing defence) all performed wonderfully well for four quarters. Natalie Sparks (WA) and Steph Ryan (WD) had good games for Cranny while Tahlia Coates (goal attack) had a very strong final quarter. Tooradin made the biggest statement of the weekend with a thumping 52-14 victory over Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. The Seagulls made travelling look easy, packing away the four points with a dominant 14-3 opening quarter. The Seagulls defenders were outstanding with Ebony Dolan and Bec Kinna allowing the Redbacks a maximum of just four goals in any one quarter. Shona Wells and Jess Maher were brilliant through the middle for the winners who taught the Redbacks a netball lesson. Hampton Park will need to rebound strongly against Pakenham this week after its poorest performance of the season. Shannon Rennison and Karli Foster did well to restrict the damage done by the undefeated Seagulls and could their heads high. And Narre Warren has overcome a strong first-quarter challenge from Pakenham to run away with a 59-30 victory at Kalora Park. The Lions matched it with the reigning champs early, trailing 1110 at the first break on the back of some stellar contributions from Emma Jones (WA), Kate McGowan (GK) and Keely Wright (GD). But the Magpies have class all over the court, and it started to show after quarter time. They hit back with 12 goals to five in the second term and unleashed their full power with 20 goals to six in the final stanza. Gabby Dwyer (GS) scored 40 goals for the Magpies while a brilliant midcourt led by Leigh Taylor, Bec Potalej, Erin Clark and Britt Mashado overwhelmed the Lions in the dying stages.

Thrilling drawn game for Comets By Nick Creely FFV SOCCER WRAP REVIEW - ROUND 9 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH-EAST It was an entertaining Saturday afternoon at Warner Reserve, with the Casey Comets drawing level with South Springvale 2-2. It was danger signs early for the Comets when Alex Rojas converted a goal inside the first five minutes, but the visitors found the net with an impressive goal to Ray Markley in the 24th minute. The game was tight in the second half, and nothing could separate them at the end with both sides finding a goal late in the game. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH-EAST Berwick City took on second placed Eltham in an important game for both teams promotion aspirations. City once again were slow off the blocks and despite absorbing constant pressure from Eltham managed to hold them off until the 30th minute when a lack of communication at the back allowed the Eltham striker to score unopposed into an open goal. It wasn’t so positive for Drouin who are now the bottom placed side - with a damaging 0-6 loss to Dandenong Warriors. Bunyip was no match for the undefeated Sandown Lions, falling 4-2 in an encouraging display for the Strikers.

Young guns saddle up for state finals Congratulations to the Under 13 Open SEFNL Representative Netball side and their coach, Katrina Foster who on Sunday 28 May won the Central East Association Championships for their age group at Frankston. This now qualifies them to play in the finals of the 2017 Netball Victorian Association Championships on Sunday 25 June at the State Netball Hockey Centre. BIG V BASKETBALL REVIEW - ROUND 10 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN The Casey Cavaliers have slumped to sixth on the table after an 83-111 loss to top side Knox Raiders on Saturday night. A large crowd gathered at Casey Indoor to see the Cavs take it to a competition heavyweight, but in a disappointing result, the Cavs were no match for the premiership fancies, who ran them ragged from the outset. The Raiders built a solid nine-point lead at the first break, extending that lead to 17 at half time, before killing off the contest quickly after the break to put the result beyond doubt.
