Career firefighters set to run ‘shared’ stations By Casey Neill and Victoria Stone-Meadows Career firefighters are expected to assume responsibility for Dandenong, Springvale and Hallam fire stations under reforms announced to end the long-running workplace dispute. However Springvale’s professional and volunteer firefighters say they will stay united and work to maintain their working relationships. “In the long run, it’s hard to say how it’s all going to pan out,” Springvale Fire Brigade volunteer Lieutenant Jason Petrovic said. “In the long-run we’ll have a lot of questions on how things will change. For the short term it’s very much business as usual. “Our relationships are really strong and we work really hard on maintaining them.” State Emergency Services Minister James Merlino announced on Friday 19 May that paid CFA members would join with the MFB to become Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), leaving the CFA as a solely volunteer organisation. The announcement came as the long-running dispute between the United Firefighters Union (UFU) and the CFA over an enterprise bargaining agreement continued.
FRV will take over areas currently covered by integrated stations - including Dandenong, Springvale and Hallam - and a new Fire District Review Panel will redraw coverage boundaries. Volunteers and paid CFA members will continue to work alongside one another at integrated fire stations as CFA volunteers and FRV paid firefighters. “The best part of 18 months to two years, it’s really impacted everyone,” Mr Petrovic said. “There’s always murmurs. It’s negative publicity. That’s never good for the organisation. “It hasn’t been a fun time for everyone. “Regardless of paid or unpaid, we’re there to do a job, we’re there to serve the community. “That’s what we do, day in day out. “You can very easily let things get in the way, but it’s always been a focus for us that we don’t.” The United Firefighters Union on Wednesday 24 May launched a public awareness campaign in support of the restructure. UFU Victoria secretary Peter Marshall said the Fire Doesn’t Wait campaign was about raising public awareness of the state’s antiquated fire services being a risk to the public and firefighters. “It’s been 60 years since the fire service bound-

ary has changed, during that time there’s been enormous residential growth in the eastern suburbs, in the western suburbs, in the northern suburbs,” he said. “People don’t understand for the purpose of fire cover, places like Dandenong, Springvale, Greenvale, Melton are deemed country. “They do not understand that they do not get the same response as if they were in the metropolitan fire brigade boundary. “Ultimately, we want to capture this opportunity to bring Victoria’s fire services into the 21st century and make our state safer for firefighters, and the people of Victoria.” Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV), the organisation that represents CFA volunteers, said in a statement that it welcomed any reforms that improved the way Victorian fire services worked. “But these reforms need to be developed collaboratively and openly,” it said. “VFBV will continue to urge the government to stop, take a breath and work with us constructively and in consultation with our people delivering the services on the ground to find a model that will modernise Victoria’s fire and emergency services, not take it backward.”

Thieves ride off with mowers Thieves stole ride-on lawn mowers and generators worth $10,000 from a Hallam warehouse. Police said the incident took place in Dansu Court in the early hours of Monday 8 May when the Briggs and Stratton equipment was stolen. The most expensive aspect outlined in the draft program is $30,749,000 allocated for various land acquisitions across the municipality. Fund-raiser best form of defence A self-defence class raised cash for a good cause in Endeavour Hills. The Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre hosted the program for women on Saturday 20 May. It donated the $5 participation fee to the YMCA Open Doors Charity which provides underprivileged people with access to YMCA-managed facilities in Casey. The day was designed to foster community engagement and provide a program to help improve safety through self-defence skills. Fifteen people took part and the centre received requests to run the course for teens and another centre user group.

50 years ago 23 May 1967 Torana in two weeks The Torana, the amazing new General Motors Holden “baby” - the car which has set all Surfers Paradise talking - will be seen in Dandenong within two weeks. Designed as a two-door, four-seater sports coupe, the Torana comes in three basic models - sedan, special and super luxury.
Prices have been designed to be directly competitive with such cars as Volkswagen, Mini de-luxe and many of the smaller Japanese cars. On the outside, Torana sits low while a wide angle grille gives the front of the car a distinct snarl. On the inside, the instruments are plentiful and extremely accurate. Front bucket-type seats are well contoured and provide excellent support. The prices: sedan $1795, special $1890, super luxury $2025.
20 years ago 2 June 1997 Wedge plans restricted Plans to put 4300 houses on Keysborough’s green wedge have been given the thumbs down by Greater Dandenong Council. The council last week voted seven to three to restrict development on the green wedge
to a few hundred houses. It wants to restrict development to 100 hectares of the 1344 hectare site and impose a minimum lot size four times that proposed by a group of landowners. The Southern Strategy Group asked the council to amend its planning scheme to make way for a housing development in an area bounded by Springvale Road, Cheltenham Road, the proposed Scoresby Freeway, the proposed Dingley Bypass, Dandenong Creek and Mordialloc Creek. The council has recommended the Dingley freeway reservation be considered the ‘edge to the wedge’ providing a physical barrier between urban and non-urban areas. It has recommended the special use zone be scrapped and replaced with an environment rural zone, restricting development to low-density subdivisions. The area to be zoned environment rural is bounded by the Dingley freeway reserva-
tion and Cheltenham Road, Springvale Road, Keysborough Golf Club and Chapel Road.
5 years ago 28 May 2012 The sheer weight of opinion Springvale mechanic Vu Ho, who has waged a Supreme Court battle to keep his pet sheep at home, has revealed the earlier involvement of an RSPCA inspector over shearing the animal. Before his $150,000 legal battle with Greater Dandenong Council, Mr Ho had been embroiled in a tangle with RSPCA inspectors over his sheep’s unshorn coat. Mr Ho said: “At the last meeting the inspector’s boss asked me to shear the rump of the sheep. So I told him ‘that is easy. Just a few minutes I can finish it. But our dispute must end here, and let the wool grow naturally’.”

Hallam students got a taste for entrepreneurship through a week-long business experience. Illuminate Education spent a week at Hallam Secondary College from 15 to 19 May working with five teams from the school plus one each from Dandenong High School and Keysborough College. Founder Adam Mostogl said that, in short, they taught the students how to start a business. “We gave them a challenge of looking for something in the preventative health space, looking at some of the health data that’s around,� he said. “They’ve gone from the idea generation stage all the way through to writing business plans, financial forecasts, marketing collateral, pitching their idea, and understanding how the changing world of work happens.� The Year 9 and 10 students came up with plans for a juice bar, a food van with healthy sandwiches,
healthy cooking classes, dance and yoga, and fitness groups. Mr Mostogl said the students also learnt and developed skills around independent learning, and financial and digital literacy. “Working in small teams and collaborating is a really useful skill for wherever they go in life,� he said. The week concluded with trade display stalls and reviews from business professionals. Student Callum and his team came up with the idea of a food truck with healthy options. “Instead of being hot dogs, hot chips, things like that, we sell fresh sandwiches and fresh juices,� he said. He said only a small number of Casey residents were eating enough fruit and vegetables. “It was a really good program,� he said. “It was a lot of information to take in, but you did have team members to work with.�
Saving kids from a life of poverty By Casey Neill “With your support, we can stop poor children becoming poor adults.� That was the message from The Smith Family CEO Dr Lisa O’Brien as she launched the national children’s education charity’s winter appeal. “Students from low-income backgrounds are often up to three years behind their more advantaged peers in the crucial areas of reading, maths and science,� she said. “The further behind they fall, the more likely they are to disengage altogether.� Dr O’Brien said The Smith Family needed to raise $4.1 million by 30 June to deliver education support programs for nearly 10,000 disadvantaged children this year. The Smith Family’s Dandenong program coordinator Rosalind Leong said the charity provided 1200 children and young people in the area with a Learning for Life program sponsorship. Ms Leong said the program worked in three ways to support participants, who were all from lowincome, disadvantaged backgrounds. It provides children with funds to pay for school
expenses, access to a family partnerships co-ordinator who helps them stay motivated, and access to learning support programs. “The Smith Family runs a range of learning support programs in partnership with four secondary schools and eight primary schools,� Ms Leong said. She said Student2student was one of the longestrunning and matched children in Years 3 to 8 and up to two years behind in their reading level with trained, older students. “The younger students read to their buddy over the phone up to three times a week, over an 18-week period,� she said. “The program has been very successful in improving students’ confidence and attitudes towards reading thereby improving their reading skills as well.� Ms Leong said there was high demand for services in the Dandenong area “and there are many more families we could support, if we were able to�. “Our focus is always on helping children to achieve their best at school, and working with parents and teachers to support the child,� she said. Premier Daniel Andrews launched a level crossing removal information hub in Noble Park on Friday 26 May. Residents will be able to chat to project staff, view plans and maps, and survey construction from a rooftop deck. The hub will also feature an interactive virtual reality experience to provide a sneakpeak into Victoria’s busiest rail line’s future. Across Australia - including Greater Dandenong - 900 kilometres of road has been paved with road sealant and surfacing products made from recycled printer cartridges. A victim of crime has thrown his support behind a Dandenong basketball side for troubled African youths. Holloway Diamonds donated $5000 to the Black Rhinos, an initiative of Afri-Aus Care. “It is not because I forgive them,” Garry Holloway explained in a Facebook post. “The current system is not working, so I looked for a different approach.” He described Afri-Aus Care founder Selba Luke as “like a Mother Teresa to these under-
privileged and misguided youths”. “She melted our hearts reminding us of what Australia is truly about,” he said. “We can integrate these people and make them citizens. Focus on elder abuse By Bonny Burrows A local community legal service is shining a light on a form of domestic violence not often discussed - elder abuse. Casey Cardinia Legal Service (CCLS) is hoping to bring awareness to the little-known issue targeting society’s most vulnerable, in the hope that more victims come forward. To assist this, it has launched a free outreach service and elder abuse program, available to residents across Cardinia Shire, the City of Casey and Greater Dandenong. “A lot of people don’t know that elder abuse is a form of domestic violence, so we’re really trying to get that out there,” CCLS elder abuse program co-ordinator Simon Kelly said. “We’re trying to get the message out that they (the elderly) have rights too.” According to CCLS, elder abuse comes in many forms including physical and sexual violence, emotional abuse and financial exploitation. Despite what many may think, physical violence wasn’t the most common form of elder abuse, but rather financial estimated to make up about 50 per cent of elderly abuse, Mr Kelly said. He said the difficulty in combating financial
A new service is hoping to combat finance abuse of the elderly. abuse was that many victims and perpetrators often didn’t see the abusive actions were wrong. The intentions were sometimes good, Mr Kelly said, however controlling financial situations of others without their consent was still abuse. “The issue is when people think they’re doing the right thing, for example selling the elderly person’s property or accessing their bank accounts with possibly good intentions, even though the elderly resident doesn’t want them to,” he said. A person’s decision making capacity also came into play, Mr Kelly said.
“Finance abuse has been defined as managing the finances of a competent person without permission,” he said. “And that’s the issue. How do you determine when somebody no longer has capacity to make informed decisions?” The complexities of the financial elder abuse were vast, he said, therefore it was important people kept their eye out for possible signs of exploitation. “People may comment they have no money or they don’t have access to their funds,” Mr Kelly said. “It can be hard to determine if something is in fact financial abuse, particularly when the elderly involved have health conditions that may alter their capacity. “Therefore, we recommend, if anyone suspects anything to contact a professional. At least then, they can determine if it is in fact financial abuse.” He said the more people were aware of the abuse, the easier it would be to protect those at risk. While internet sales continue to grow in Australia, the rate of growth has slowed, and it’s commodity products like books and TVs that best suit internet sales. Small businesses that offer a unique consumer experience with expert product knowledge, great customer service and after sales back-up are actually growing faster than internet sales, according to the ABS. “The internet is revolutionising our lives and the way we buy certain products, but I can’t get a great cup of coffee on the net. And I can’t get my car serviced, my hair cut or great advice on which shirt looks best on me,” Mr Morgan said. “And this is where small business has the competitive advantage.
“Local small businesses need to make the most of their local presence. We need to sell a personal experience, not just a product. “The small businesses that don’t offer a niche experience are almost certain to fail now that competition does not only come from shops in the next street or town, but from every retailer on earth with a web-site.” Mr Morgan will present a series of 50 minute seminars on how small businesses in Casey and Cardinia can thrive in tough economic times as part of the Local Business Leaders Seminars. He will host seminars in Dandenong on Tuesday 20 June, Pakenham on Thursday 22 June and Narre Warren on Friday 23 June. All sessions are free with various seminar times available. Career skills face-to-face By Casey Neill Noble Park North students overcame their nerves to gain skills and confidence to enter the world of work. Carwatha College P-12 ran its mock interview program on Thursday 18 May with help from 26 community and business representatives. In the weeks leading up to the event, students developed letter-writing skills, created a resume and rehearsed interview techniques. On the day, they dressed in formal attire and handed over a prepared employment portfolio to their interviewers.
After a 15-minute interview, students received written and verbal feedback on their communication skills, attitude, personality and maturity, knowledge and interest in their selected job, and personal appearance. Year 10 student Alema said the experience was eye-opening and made her reflect on her skills. “The process has given me confidence in putting myself out there and taking a chance with my future career,” she said. “The interview was nerve-racking but a really great opportunity to take me out of my comfort zone. “I feel more prepared for future conversations
with employers and know what to expect when in the next interview situation.” Norden HR and finance manager Claire Spencer said there had been an onslaught of fear-based hype surrounding millennials joining the workforce of late. “However, if the students that I met and mock interviewed at Carwatha College P-12 today are a reflection of the calibre of potential young employees entering our workforce, we can breathe a sigh of relief as we have nothing to fear,” she said. “I was blown away yet again with the confidence, enthusiasm, resilience and attitude of the students.”
Greater Dandenong businesses could tap into opportunities in southern China with help from the council. Greater Dandenong business group manager Paul Kearsley visited Wenzhou in March alongside representatives from the Springvale Asian Business Association (SABA). The trip was at the invitation of the Wenzhou Chamber of International Commerce and Mr Kearsley aimed to get further information and understanding about opportunities available in the region. He considered adding Wenzhou to the itinerary for a council-led business delegation to China scheduled for September. The Monday 22 May council meeting heard that Mr Kearsley thought it would be valuable, but the trip was already scheduled for seven days and likely delegates weren’t willing to take any more time away from their businesses. Mr Kearsley suggested there could instead be a further trip to the southern part of China next year, including Wenzhou, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, subject to further review and research. On his March trip he visited the Lucheng District in Wenzhou, which is undergoing redevelopment, and met representatives from the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the Wenzhou Foreign and Overseas Office. The council adopted an International Relations policy last July to help build overseas relationships around economic co-operation and expand economic opportunities for local businesses. It established a formal sister city relationship with Xuzhou in 1996 and over the past few years has developed a link with the Jiangsu Federation of Industry and Commerce in Nanjing. PRIVATE SALES DOING WELL While auction volumes are increasing in commuter towns, private treaty remains the most common method of sale in regional Victoria. The strength of a private sale market can be measured by the number of days a home takes to sell in a particular town or suburb. Declines in the median days on market indicate increased buyer interest or demand for homes in that region. The latest REIV data shows Victoria’s private sale market continued to perform well in April with homes selling 15 days faster than the same period last year in a median of 51 days - the lowest in seven years. In the year to April, the seaside town of Lorne experienced one of the state’s largest improvements with homes selling 43 days faster in a median of 54 days. The relatively new Geelong suburb of Armstrong Creek has also experienced significant improvements over the year with homes spending 46 days on market in April, 40 days less than the same month last year. Increased buyer demand was also recorded in Castlemaine, north west of Melbourne, where homes sold 32 days faster than last year in a median of 62 days. Drouin’s private sale market also improved with homes spending a median of 35 days on the market in April, down 28 days on April 2016 figures. Other regional towns experiencing improvements in their private sale markets include Kilmore, down 28 days over the year to a median of 56 days on market; Wangaratta, falling 26 days over the year to a median of 38 days; Warragul, down 25 days over the year to
a median of 31 days; and Clifton Springs, down 25 days to a median of 41 days. Meanwhile, Irymple and Newcomb were home to some of the best performing private sale markets with homes spending just 26 and 27 days on market respectively. This was followed by the Geelong suburb of Corio where homes sold in a median of 28 days in April, 15 days less than the
same period last year. Nearby Lara, Geelong West and East Geelong also recorded some of the state’s best private sale market with homes selling in a median of just 29 days in April. Kids make some happy campers Dandenong West Primary School students learned and grew at school camp thanks to community support. A $3000 donation from the Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong and $8800 from Dandenong Club meant all families were able to send their kids to camp this year. Assistant Principal Daniel Frew said 84 students signed up the 24 to 28 April trip to Woorabinda Camp in Yallourn North. “It is an education department camp, like Somers, and is run by teachers,” he said. “Because of this, the camp fees are a lot cheaper. “We have been able to find funding for the buses through Ardoch Youth Foundation. “Even with this sponsorship, camp will cost $200 per student. “For most students this is way beyond their family’s means. “Yet these children probably need camp more than the students in the more affluent areas.” Students said they got to try new things, had the “best week of my life” and learnt a lot about the environment and how to care for it. “The zip line was really scary but I learnt that I can beat my fear,” one student said. Mr Frew said the Dandenong West community was made up of about 40 different language groups and less than 10 per cent of the students spoke only English. “Having a language background other than English can be hard for any family,” he said. “However, many of our families are also from a refugee background or are asylum seekers. “Even our families that have been in Australia for a few years still struggle financially.” He said many families and students had experienced war, death, trauma and severe hardships “yet they remain happy, lovely children seeking all learning opportunities and appreciating everything”. Mr Frew said the government provided some money for camps, excursions and sporting activities. “Out of $125, excursions take up $40, sport $20, swimming about $65,” he said. “Basically, the families choose between swimming and camp. Both are vital.
Mahnaz meets a cow. “Even if the $65 is used for camp, the residual amount is often too much for the families to pay.” He said the school had about 140 students in Years 4 to 6. “Last year, only 64 were able to go to camp,” he said. “That meant that about 80 missed out, sometimes due to money and sometimes due to families not yet feeling safe enough and confident enough to send their child to camp. “Going to camp teaches the students to get along with others, become more independent, to be organised, to accept challenges. “Parents also learn a lot from allowing their children to go to camp. “They must be able to trust the school and staff. “After experiencing many forms of trauma, it is very difficult to allow others to care for your children.” Mr Frew said that by supporting families to feel confident enough to send their children to camp, “the parents are learning that Australia is a safe place”.

SPORT Stingrays under the microscope By Nick Creely DANDENONG STINGRAYS MID SEASON REVIEW With the TAC Cup taking the weekend off for Development Round, which saw many Dandenong players featuring for Vic Country, NICK CREELY has cast his eye over the first eight rounds of the season for the Stingrays, as 2017 reaches its halfway point. LADDER POSITION: 6th (4-4) BEST AND FAIREST: No player has relished more midfield time than Mitch Cotter, who is a contested ball animal and one that loves to lay a bone crunching tackle. The 17-year-old from Doveton has carried the Rays’ midfield brigade, and flourished with more responsibility. Cotter has played every game so far this season, averaging around the 20 disposal mark. More importantly, his tackle numbers have been enormous, with an average of almost six per game. Angus Patterson - the tall key defender - has also been excellent, and would be a close second at this stage of the year. BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE: In Round 4 against Sandringham at Frankston Park, draft prospect Hunter Clark played a colossal of a game in a losing side. The midfielder racked up 25 disposals, seven tackles but, more importantly, kicked two goals laced with class. Just before three-quarter-time, Clark streamed out of the centre, shrugged two tackles and a launched a brilliant 60 metre kick straight through the goals. He then backed it up with a clever snap only

With the prospect of heading into the weekend’s bye with a 3-5 record, the Rays flicked the switch and played a tough, relentless brand of football. After taking a narrow three-point lead into quarter time, the Rays kicked six goals in the matter of 15 minutes to steal the game away in one foul swoop. Sturdy midfielder Mitch Cotter (24 disposals, 12 tackles) was among the best, while rangy half back Mason De Wit (31 disposals) was a nightmare for the Ranges.
Dandenong stars make the grade for India Cup By Nick Creely Four Dandenong players have been selected in the Australian Opals Squad ahead of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in Bangalore, India. The squad features both Sara and Stephanie Blicavs (nee Cumming) as well as prized new Rangers’ recruits Carley Mijovic and Tessa Lavey. The squad will head to Phoenix, Arizona, from 25 June to 3 July for a selection camp, as Australia ramps up preparations for the 2018 FIBA World Cup, which teams can automatically qualify for by reaching the semi-finals in this competition. The Opals have been drawn into Group B, where they will play Korea, Philippines and Japan in the pool stage. The tournament will start on 23 July. Regular Opals head coach Sandy Brondello is unavailable for the Asia Cup due to her ongoing WNBA commitments, but the team will be led by assistant coaches Paul Goriss and Cheryl Chambers. “The aim of the camp is to introduce the players to the concepts and game style that Sandy will install into the Opals program,” Goriss said. “It also gives the coaching staff the opportunity to evaluate the players’ skill set that will help the team be successful in Bangalore.” The squad is mixed with a great variety of experience and young talent, and includes six members of the Rio Olympic team in Lavey, Rachel Jarry, Laura Hodges, Katie-Rae Ebzery, Erin Phillips and Marianna Tolo. “With the Olympic experience of players such as Snell, Phillips and Hodges alongside WNBA and European players in Jarry, O’Hea and Hurst, it will be a very tough and competitive camp,” Goriss said. “The young brigade is also coming through in the form of Wallace and Smith who have both had outstanding years at USA colleges while the WNBL contingent have been recognised for their form and performances during last season.” The full squad is: Abby Bishop Sara Blicavs Stephanie Blicavs Alex Bunton Katie-Rae Ebzery Maddie Garrick Kelsey Griffin Laura Hodges Natalie Hurst Rachel Jarry Alice Kunek

WORST TEAM PERFORMANCE: Although Round 6 broke the hearts of the Rays with a nailbiting three-point loss to Northern Knights after leading until the final moments, at least it was competitive. The very next round, the Oakleigh Chargers blew the Rays away in a dominant 89-point win and just never looked likely. Although they were missing a large chunk of their cavalry, the performance was a disappointing one, but a game that Craig Black and his side learnt a lot from, as shown by their performance the very next week. WHAT HAS GONE WRONG? Although it is inevitable with all the TAC Cup clubs, more often than not the Rays haven’t had their best players available, and that has caused a spike in performance. The Rays’ two most lucrative players - Oscar Clavarino and Luke Davies-Uniacke - have been caught up with school football commitments, and only played one game each. Adding to this, some overages (Bailey Morrish and Mason De Wit) have had the chance to make their VFL debuts. Although this is a positive for the club in getting games into others and phasing these players into elite football, it is the main reason they have been inconsistent. WHAT HAS GONE RIGHT? With a number of players missing, a lot have stepped up and showed immense promise. Cotter and Patterson are the two who have relished their chances the most, but others such as Will Hamill, Lachlan Young, Ali Zijai and Dylan Morris are all exciting. With Craig Black getting games into these kids, the results will slowly turn in a positive trajectory after the bye.
Pair sign up to boost Rangers The Dandenong Rangers have been further bolstered in the quest of the 2018/18 WNBL championship, with fan favourite Amelia Todhunter re-signing and Opals star Tessa Lavey signing two-year deals. Todhunter, 29, had a brilliant 2016/17 season with the Rangers, establishing herself as one of the finest defensive players in the competition. “I started playing WNBL for the Jayco Rangers 10 years ago when I was 18 and from day one the fans and the club have been so supportive and welcoming,” she said. “So it’s only fitting for me to be back for my tenth season this year, where it all started for me as a WNBL player. “I love the girls I play with here and the team first focus that Larissa engrains into us - I know we’ve got a big season ahead and can’t wait to get back out on the court.” Lavey, 24, is a major signing for the Rangers, having captained Perth Lynx for the last two seasons and representing the Opals in the 2016 Rio Olympics. “I think it’s going to be a very exciting year ahead with the group signed so far,” said Tessa. “Over the off-season I spoke with Larissa multiple times and she just had a really good energy about her - a really good focus on individual player development which is definitely important for me. “I could feel her excitement and it made me feel like Dandenong is the place I want to be.” The club has also signed Kayla Pedersen and Carley Mijovic, as well as re-signing star players Sara Blicavs and Stephanie Blicavs.

In the clash at Power Reserve, the Hawks jumped out to a 26-point quarter time lead as the Eagles struggled to control their ball winners from running them ragged around the ground. This lead quickly ballooned out to 45 at half time, as the Hawks toyed with the Eagles, who actually came into the round inside the top four. Another top-quality game to Phillip Ward saw the Hawks run out the winners, with in-form forward Matt Neve banking another three majors. Sandown 2.6(18) were no match for South Yarra 29.18(192), as the Cobras’ woes continue. After competing hard in the first term to be in arrears by 15-points, the Lions blew them away, kicking 26 goals in three quarters. In other matches, Dandenong’s 6.7(43) positive fortnight of competiveness continued, falling to Carrum Patterson Lakes 13.11(89) in an encouraging display. The undefeated Ashwood 12.10(82) continued its unbeaten season with a gritty win over Lyndhurst 9.7(61) - The Lightning lead for the majority of the contest and at every change before the Pies found a way to win in the last quarter. Black Rock 14.11(95) held sway in a ripping clash with Lyndale 9.11(65), with the game closer than the scoreline suggested. And finally, Endeavour Hills 17.26(128) obliterated Moorabbin 7.6(48) by 80-points, but should have perhaps won by a lot more, having 43 scoring shots to 13. But the Bulls refused to give in, barnstorming home as star players Ziggie Alwan, Jackson Sketcher and James Gwilt stamped their influence. However, they fell just short and paid for their slow start. Meanwhile, Rowville 14.8(92) finally got some reward for effort, holding off Bayswater 12.10(82). A brilliant individual performance by Damian Garner (four goals) ensured the Hawks could bank a second victory for 2017.
Doveton still a step off the pace By David Nagel Doveton still has some serious work to do to become a genuine premiership contender after a 49-point loss to Berwick at Robinson Oval on Saturday. This was expected to be a close contest between the two top-ranked teams in the South East Football Netball League -but the Doves were given a valuable lesson in team football after a very impressive start. With the aid of a three-to-four-goal breeze, the Doves played direct footy in the first term, exiting the back half far too easily for Berwick’s liking, kicking the opening three goals of the match. Clayton McCartney was proving a handful for the best defensive unit in the competition, kicking two, while Travis Davis conjured up a miracle banana from the boundary for the third. Gun-recruit Gach Nyuon was giving the Doves’ midfielders first use, with an athletic display in the ruck, while Frank D’Agostino and Jake Blackwood were having the better of Berwick’s danger forwards in Andrew Morozoff and Tim Gunn. But the Wickers had one forward get off the leash - and Brody Connelly made the difference in the end. The talented left-footer kicked six for the day, including two in a 5.7 to 1.2 second quarter that put the Doves on the back foot. The Wickers played scintillating football in the third term, building a 13-point lead at half time into a match-winning 43-point lead at the final break. Skipper Madi Andrews and former Melbourne player James Magner joined Connelly as Berwick’s best. Reigning premier Cranbourne has jumped to second place on the ladder after a clinical 48-point victory over Beaconsfield at Casey Fields. The home side continued its impressive form in last quarters this season, kicking 6.5 to 1.2 to break open what had been a very scrappy game for three quarters. The winners had a very even contribution with Khaled Kandakji, Ryan Jones, Shaun Marusic and Zak Roscoe all kicking two each, while running half back Dillan Bass was once again impressive. Former Carlton and GWS tall Setanta O’Hailpin had a massive impact in his first game for Tooradin, kicking 12 goals in the Seagulls’ 147-point victory over Hampton Park. O’Hailpin and the returning Nathan Page helped themselves to 21 goals, with Page the outstanding player on the ground with nine goals rotating through the midfield. And finally, Narre Warren has jumped to third with a 67-point victory over Pakenham at Fox Road. Nathan Allen and Trent Cody were brilliant for the Magpies while Jake Barclay and Liam Tyrrell were best for the Lions.
For Dandenong City - It’s never over until it’s over! By Nick Creely It was the sort of comeback that dreams are made of - and for South Melbourne FC - it’s a match that will go down in footballing history almost unrivalled. In a game for the ages last Wednesday night, the victorious South rose from the dead to claim a 5-4 victory over Dandenong City in the FFA Cup. But they just simply shouldn’t have won - but they did. With less than ten minutes of regular time on the clock, the second-tier City led 4-1, in what was a truly stunning performance against a team that could be playing in the A-League. City’s stars - Ljubo Milicevic - the former Socceroo, Nick Kalmar and Damir Salcin had complete control over the contest, as a major boil over went from a distant possibility to a genuine reality.
But in the 82nd minute a penalty to the South triggered an almighty collapse - with star striker Milos Lujic netting a goal to make the score 4-2. Ten minutes later, the South had scored another three goals - including the sealer from the hattrick man Lujic from a penalty in the 96th minute, to famously send the crowd into raptures. The game has made national headlines, appearing on breakfast shows and newspapers around the country. “The boys just didn’t give up until the very end - when we were 4-1 down, we got that one goal and we sort of just felt it was a really good feel around the ground,” Milos Lujic said post-match. “We just knew we could come back and give it a crack to be honest - the fans deserved it and we didn’t want to go out like that, and luckily for us it paid off and we ended up winning.” The comeback victory is the greatest in a rich
history for the South, who have made a name for themselves as one of the most successful clubs in Australia. The win was reminiscent of famous victories in 1980 against Middle Park, when the South came from 0-3 down to win 4-3 - 1986 against Preston when they trailed 1-3 and won 4-3, and in 1990 when they stormed home from 1-3 to win 4-3 against Sunshine. As for the City, they will now always wonder what could have been, but can hold their heads high. They will now return to the NPL 2 East ranks top of the table, with the season starting to heat up. The City travels to Kevin Bartlett Reserve to face Richmond SC, who are sitting second last on the table heading into a crucial Round 17.

Little chaser accelerates to win Fanta Bale has laid claim to being one of the sport’s greatest ever chasers by registering a breathtaking victory in the $250,000 RSN Sandown Cup at Sandown Park last Thursday night. The big crowd trackside was buzzing as one of the best fields assembled for the great race headed to the boxes, and the race delivered everything greyhound racing fans hoped it would. Western Australian chaser Teddy Monelli led early before Dundee Osprey swept around the field to take a commanding lead. Fanta Bale was denied a gap between runners and shuffled back to midfield, while the odds on favourite Burn One Down settled in a prominent position on the rail. Fanta Bale and Midnight Elsa made their moves down the back straight but with 150m to go, Fanta Bale still spotted the lamplighter a four length margin. But the tenacious little chaser railed brilliantly running for home to surge past the gallant Dundee Osprey and score by half a length in 41.87. The win came as a surprise to trainer Robert Britton who believed Fanta Bale would have to find the lead early to win the world’s richest race for stayers. “We keep looking for reasons why she can’t win, but she keeps finding a way to prove us wrong,” said Britton following the win. “When Midnight Elsa headed her I thought we were on for place prize money only, but that’s what she does, she’ll put her head out and keep trying. “I’ve had a lot of real good dogs over a lot of years, but I haven’t had what I’d call out an out champion. You’ve really got to put her in that league now.” Fanta Bale became the first greyhound to win at group 1 level over all three metropolitan distances having previously won the Australian Cup, the Rookie Rebel and Hume Cup at the Meadows. It was the fourth group 1 win of her career and the $175,000 winner’s cheque took her career prize money to $716,885, passing the great Miata

The teenage Casey Demons utility with the standout nickname - Perry Lewis-Smith - had a senior VFL debut to remember recently in the side’s 43-point triumph over Port Melbourne under lights on 20 May - 14.12 (96) to 8.5 (53). A strong contingent of supporters from Lewis-Smith’s junior club, Parkmore, turned out to watch the 2015 premiership captain and former South East Juniors best and fairest winner in action and the 18-year-old gave yet another serious glimpse into his enormous potential - racking up 10 quality disposals despite coming off the bench as 23rd man. Lewis-Smith grew up a North Melbourne fan and used to watch the likes of former Kangaroo Robin Nahas on a weekly basis. Against Port Melbourne at Casey Fields, he did battle with him. Port Melbourne went into the contest holding on to a share of the VFL ladder lead, but an undaunted Lewis-Smith still displayed plenty of his trademark poise. He beamed with pride after the game as he was drenched with Gatorade in the team circle as the Demons belted out their famous song. Lewis-Smith is as strong under the packs with his clean hands as he is on the outside with his relentless run and carry and sublime footskills. But he’ll never be the one to say that - he’s too modest and unassuming. Just don’t mistake that for a lack of self-belief. He’s as self-driven as any prodigious young footballer his age. Lewis-Smith’s nickname is ‘The Machine’ for very good reason - he won 10 best and fairest category awards as a junior player - three of them league awards - and last year he had the highestregistered and recorded beep test out of all TAC Cup players competing in the 2016 combines at a whopping 15.7.
