The newest allocation of police officers to the Casey region is just around the corner, with the announcement of 31 new frontline officers for the Casey police service area. The new officers are among the 300 new recruits promised in the 2016-’17 Victorian State Budget and will be deployed in growth areas across the state over the next 12 months. The new police will begin to hit the streets next month, with the full 300 new officers being placed in the community by April next year. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said the investment from the government had allowed the police force to grow and commit to areas most in need of police presence. “Last year we welcomed record investments in police, and today we are announcing where the first cohort of our new frontline police are being deployed,” he said. “These allocations will allow us to put more police out on patrol, responding where and when needed in the community.” While the 300 new officers will make a difference to how police are able to respond to callouts, Mr Ashton said it was just the beginning of a stronger Victoria Police. “We have 2729 more police yet to be allocated across the state, plus 100 Protective Services Officers to help provide an even safer public transport network,” he said. “The government is also funding an extensive equipment and IT program for police, and providing police with new powers and introducing new laws that we have asked for.” “All of this will greatly enhance our ability to keep people safe across the state.” The Police Association of Victoria welcomed the news, with secretary Sergeant Wayne Gatt praising the government’s commitment to community safety. “The Police Association has for some time advocated the urgent recruitment and deployment of additional police to these areas. We’re pleased that extra boots are now starting to hit the ground,” he said. “We also acknowledge the level of consultation that’s taken place with the Police Association by government and Victoria Police in determining where the first 300 officers would be allocated. The 2017 Casey Careers Expo and Try a Trade saw hundreds of high school students from Casey and Cardinia flock to the Cranbourne Racecourse on Tuesday 2 May. The expo offered high school students an opportunity to learn about and experience a range a different trades and other career paths. Students were able to get their hands dirty with everything from tinkering with car engines to putting their muscles to the test for sports science. The expo bought universities, TAFEs, trade specialty schools, youth services and many more together to give students the best start when choosing their future careers. Students from Hampton Park Secondary College Sarah and Natasha said the expo was an eye-opening experience. “There are lot of different unis and job opportunities offered to us when graduate,” Sarah said. “I know I want to be a lawyer but the expo has helped me come up with a back-up plan.” Natasha said he first impression of the expo was a bit overwhelming, but she quickly got into the swing of it. “I have been going around and learning more in depth

about the different jobs and carers we can go into,” she said. Linda Rackham has been a careers guidance teacher for 15 years and said the Casey Careers Expo and Try a Trade is a great thing for students to be involved in. “There are lots of expos like this but this one is unique with hands-on experiences as well,” she said. “It gives students a good taste of a very wide range of things and they come out a lot

more informed, which is fantastic.” This event is made possible through support from the the City of Casey, Casey Cardinia Shire Council, the South East Local Learning and Employment Network, Cranbourne Racecourse and media partner, Star News Group. Home for SES at last By Victoria Stone-Meadows Years of campaigning has paid off with the State Government announcing Cranbourne will have an SES unit built. In a move no one expected, the budget also allocates funding towards establishing an SES unit to service the Clyde and Officer area as well. Community groups, Casey council and the Narre Warren SES unit have been working hard alongside Cranbourne MP Jude Perera to bring an SES unit to Cranbourne.

Narre Warren SES Clinton Brown said the addition of an SES unit in Cranbourne would take a lot of pressure off the busy Narre Warren unit. “It’s going to improve the organisation’s and service’s ability to respond in the local area,” he said. “It will cut the response time to emergencies at places like Pearcedale, Warneet and Cranbourne by about 20 minutes.” Mr Brown said it had been more than five years that the Narre Warren SES as well as various community groups had

been calling for a second unit in the region. The 2017-’18 State Budget was officially released at 1pm on Tuesday 2 May, and it was announced $2 million will be allocated for the construction of the new Cranbourne SES unit. Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino said the allocation of funding for a SES unit at Cranbourne is a win for volunteers and the community. “A local unit in Cranbourne is a great outcome for this community, and ensures that its hardworking SES vol-

unteers are close by in an emergency,” he said. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera also said the new unit would be a great benefit to the growing Cranbourne region. “As our community grew, it became very clear that we needed our own depot,” he said. “With a lot of support from local SES members and the community, I’m proud to say we’ve delivered.” “It’s only right that we give back to the men and women who give so much to this community.”

Dance of love for 60 years By Victoria Stone-Meadows A Cranbourne couple have reached a diamond milestone and celebrated 60 years of marriage together. Bill and Ruth Legg have shared many years and many memories together - but it all started back in a dance hall in Malvern in 1955. “He was good dancer and that was something I insisted on in a partner; they had to be a good dancer,” Mrs Legg said. “If they weren’t any good I would shuffle off the next time they asked me but Bill was a very good dancer.” After dating for about 18 months, the couple were engaging in a nonnonsense way that would come to be the defining theme of their marriage. “We had been going out for some tie and went to my aunt’s place for dinner and my aunty said ‘If you two are thinking of getting engaged, I know a jewel-

ler’,” Mrs Legg said. “So we had to wait till the store opened and we went and bought a ring.” The couple were married in 1957 and have raised two children in Sandra and Malcolm, and now have seven grandchildren and almost 11 great grandchildren. They passed on their advice to other couples and shared their secret for a long and happy marriage. “The age old cliche - tolerance,” Mr Legg said. “It is a cliche, there is no other word for it, to just understand one another not a secret really, is it?” “It is so important to be able to understand what the other person is thinking, but sometimes it’s difficult,” Mrs Legg said. The couple were able to celebrate their 60th year together on Easter Saturday.

The Cranbourne region has come out a winner, with many budgeted projects to benefit the area, according to the 2017-’18 Victorian State Budget released at 1pm on Tuesday 2 May. The Casey PSA will have a bolstered law and order presence, with 30 new police officers being allocated to the region over the next 12 months. Emergency services will also improve with the addition of an SES unit based in Cranbourne and a further $2 million being set aside for another SES unit for the Clyde/ Officer area in the future. A total of $70.5 million in funding has also been allocated to acquire land for new schools across the state including a new primary school in the Clyde North/Botanic Ridge area. Cranbourne will also receive a share of $428.3 million in environmental funding to establish a regional park south of Ballarto Road. The park will be designed to improve the liveability of the local area by providing informal recreation associated with enjoyment of natural or semi-natural surroundings for large numbers of people. Roads were also a big spending item for the Cranbourne area with $4.8 million allocated in the 2017’18 financial year for the ongoing upgrades to Thompsons Road and funding set aside for investigations into upgrades for Glasscocks Road and the Westernport Highway. The Cranbourne Botanic Gardens is also a budget winner with the State Government kicking in $3.3 million over three years to transition the gardens to using recycled irrigation water. However, not everyone is happy with the budget, and Casey Mayor Sam Aziz has hit out at the government for reducing funding to the Growing Suburbs Fund. In previous years, the Growing Suburbs Fund, earlier known as interface fund, had an annual allocation of $50 million a year, but this amount has been halved. Cr Aziz said due to rate capping and the reduction in money to the Growing Suburbs Fund, residents in Casey would be worse off. “The Victorian Premier should hang his head in shame,” Cr Aziz said. “Halving of the Growing Suburbs Fund is a slap in the face to the residents in growth areas like Casey, who will miss out or have to wait longer for the vital infrastructure they deserve.”

Student Danielle the Premier’s pick By Victoria Stone-Meadows Almost 300 students were recognised for their hard work in their VCE years with the 2017 Premier Awards announced on Thursday 27 April. Included in the high achievers was Cranbourne resident and former student of Hillcrest Christian College Danielle McAleese. Ms McAleese achieved a score of 50 - the highest study score possible - in English for the VCE subject. She said Year 12 was no walk in the park and it was thanks to her dedicated English teacher that she was able to achieve her impressive results. “Year 12 was pretty stressful, I will admit,” she said. “But for me, English was something I wanted to do well in and had been doing well in previously so, in Year 11 I

had the same teacher for Year 12 and we started working towards the Year 12 exam in Year 11.” Hillcrest VCE English teacher Luke Davis taught Ms McAleese English for three years and said she was a great student to work with. “By Year 11 she was already so far ahead and almost ready to do the exam,” he said. “She was always helping and teaching other kids in class - I even felt like I was team teaching at times.” Mr Davis says he is very proud of what Ms McAleese has achieved and it’s always a good feeling as a teacher to have your student’s hard work and dedication recognised. “It was a bit surprising when I got the letter in the mail,” Ms McAleese said. “I thought there are thousands of

students across the state that must have scored really highly so it was very humbling to receive the award.” Ms McAleese is currently studying arts and law at Monash University and plans to become a lawyer one day. She had some advice for others facing the daunting task of completing their VCE in this year and in coming years. “I would tell them to try not to stress too much,” she said. “I know it’s hard but it’s important to remember that at the end of the day your ATAR doesn’t define you. I know how much of a cliche that is but it’s very true.” “There are so many different options if you don’t get the ATAR you need so I urge Year 12 students to enjoy your last year of high school and try not to stress so much about exams.”

AFL path to jobs kicks true By Victoria Stone-Meadows AFL Sportsready and the Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) have joined forces to place 100 young people from Casey and Dandenong in work over the next four years. The pathways to work program will support young people from culturally diverse backgrounds to gain valuable educational and workplace experience. The program will see the two notfor-profit groups working closely with young people in Casey and Dandenong, providing links for young people to learn and engage with employment opportunities. Pathways to Work supports young people through education and paid work options, traineeships and apprenticeships in growth industries in Victoria; allowing both workers and employers to build valuable future skills and networks. At the program’s launch, program

participant Mustaf Aden shared his experience of migrating to Australia and trying to find work. “I arrived from Somalia as a 15-year-old in 2010 without knowing a single word of English,” Mr Aden said. “It took me a year to get around the language barrier and then I went to high school. In the two years after graduating, I found it really difficult to find a job.” “I felt like no-one was willing to take a chance and provide me with an opportunity to show what a hard worker I am.” “Thanks to AFL SportsReady and CMY, I have this great job and I’m determined to make sure it’s successful. I am making the most of this opportunity.” CMY CEO Carmel Guerra OAM said while they could support young people entering the workforce, it was equally important potential employers came to the table as well.

Blue line boost of 30 cops From front page “This shows a willingness to listen to what police on the ground are saying about where they are most stretched.” The announcement of new police officers comes on the same day the State Government has launched a new research centre to better understand serious violent and sexual crimes. The State Government has attributed $1.6 million to the new Catalyst Consortium at Swinburne University of Technology in Hawthorn. The centre will investigate the causes behind violent and sexual offending as well as understanding why perpetrators of these crimes tend to reoffend after they are prosecuted. The new Catalyst Consortium will

also look into the impacts of serious mental health issues in relation to the justice system and how this can be managed better. Minister for Corrections Gayle Tierney said by understanding why people committed violent and sexual crimes, targeted programs could be developed to manage the risk of re-offending. “By learning more about what causes repeat violent and sexual offending, we’ll be in a better position to reduce re-offending to improve community safety,” Ms Tierney said. “Victoria is a world leader in the management of serious sex offenders and this global research hub will ensure we remain at the forefront of keeping our community safe.

‘Violent offender’ behind bars By Cam Lucadou-Wells

He was arrested in Narre Warren South on 10 April. Having recently moved to Queensland, he told police he returned south to collect his things. The man, with a history of ice and

A Narre Warren South man - described as a “serious violent offender” - has been jailed for up to 18 months after pleading guilty to persistently breaching a full intervention order against his ex-partner and her mother. Despite a ban on all contact, the 30-year-old sent 244 emails and electronic messages to his former partner between February and April, Dande-

cannabis use, has since been remanded in custody. The court heard the partner was fearful of giving a formal statement to police until the man was taken into custody. In a police interview, the man said he had been “ranting and raving” and “just letting off steam” but denied making threats to kill. He said he’d wanted to be reunited

with their young daughter. The man’s offending also breached an 18-month community corrections order handed down in September. The man’s lawyer conceded jail was the only available sentence, but was mitigated by the man’s diagnosed bipolar depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder. The man had engaged well with

Queensland mental health services and enrolled in a men’s behaviour change course, the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen rejected the lawyer’s argument that the mass of messages was partly due to the accused replying to the victim. Letters Wrong way, go back Thanks to Cam Lucadou-Wells for an interesting interview with the Australian Sex Party leader, Ms Fiona Patten (Berwick News, 27 April, page 11). However, Casey Council should be commended for its stand against self-injecting rooms in this municipality. What Ms Patten doesn’t say is that safeinjecting rooms do not really deal with the underlying addiction problem. Safe-injecting rooms are about facilitating addiction habits by providing an environment where drug injections can take place, while reducing the risks of overdosing to addicts. Changing behaviour requires the use of incentives and psychology. I doubt if Ms Patten’s plan has the capacity to do this. Moreover, I think Fiona Patten has not really considered all the available relevant international evidence on how to deal with drug addiction problems. Some Scandinavian countries, for example, have successfully used a combination of financial incentives and compulsory drug rehabilitation programs to help addicts start a new life altogether. Incentives can have a very powerful impact on behaviour. But the only incentive provided by safe-injecting rooms in Victoria will be for addicts to keep taking drugs. Teen nabbed after armed robbery A 14-year-old boy from Berwick has been arrested following and armed robbery at a Foodworks supermarket about 11am Monday, 1 May. Wearing a white mask and armed with a large kitchen knife, the boy entered the Bemersyde Drive store in Berwick and demanded the shop attendant hand over the cash in the till. The shop attendant complied and handed over just under $350 in cash to the young robber before he fled the store. Police were quickly called to the scene, and the boy was located a short time later at a house in the area. Police took the boy into custody, and have charged him with armed robbery and theft. He will face the children’s court at a later date, but police are applying to keep him remanded in custody until his court appearance. Investigators from the Casey Crime Investigation Unit believe the young robber does not have any gang affiliations.

A young woman from Cranbourne has lost her licence after only obtaining it four months ago for playing a ‘cat and mouse’ game with another car. Police clocked the woman in a Suzuki Swift and a man in a Nissan X-Trail travelling along Cranbourne Road in Langwarrin about 11.30pm on Thursday 27 April. The drivers began their dangerous game when they sped away from a set of traffic lights and reached speeds of 136km/h as they travelled side by side in the 80km/h zone. The 23-year-old woman from Cranbourne’s car was impounded for 30 days and she will have to pay $1060 towing and storage costs to get it back. She is also expected to be charged on summons with driving at a dangerous speed, exceeding the speed limit and carrying more than one peer passenger. The driver of the Nissan X-Trail, a 23-yearold Frankston man, is expected to be charged on summons with driving at a dangerous speed and exceeding the speed limit. His car was also impounded.

Visa curb hits Pick, pack for at-risk youth skills at home By Casey Neill

By Casey Neill Changes to the skilled foreign worker visa system will hurt Greater Dandenong businesses, particularly manufacturers. This was the message from South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) and Dandenong-based law firm Macpherson Kelley. “I came over on a 457 visa,” SEMMA executive officer Adrian Boden revealed. The Brit was employed as the vice president of engineering for PBR, now Chassis Brakes International, in 2004. “I was coming from a multinational, European background with brakes,” he said. “I think I brought something to the community which I wouldn’t have been able to do if I hadn’t stayed on afterwards.” Mr Boden said he was still seeking more information about the changes and their impacts, but “I can’t see the advantage of doing the two-year visa”. The 457 visa previously allowed businesses to employ foreign workers for up to four years in skilled jobs where there was a shortage of Australian workers, with eligibility for Permanent Residency application after two years.

Under changes announced on Tuesday 18 April, the 457 system will be abolished and replaced with the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in March next year. TSS will include a shortterm stream, for up to two years’ work, and a mediumterm stream, for up to four years, plus safeguards to prioritise Australian workers and more targeted occupation lists. The medium-term stream will include a permanent residence pathway after three years. “I think it would be incredibly negative for the businesses in this area,” Mr Boden said. “You won’t get a skilled overseas worker relocating for two years. “We have lots of people who need skilled workers.” Macpherson Kelley Victorian managing principal Jamie Sturgess said the firm assisted businesses with more than one 457 visa every week. “There’s a whole host of issues that make recruiting from overseas more difficult than recruiting locally,” he said. “If you could have an apple in Australia, you’d be stupid if you chose the foreign apple rather than the local apple.” Mr Sturgess said production

manager was one role that had been removed from the jobs list. “Imagine if we could recruit the best production managers anywhere in the world for roles in Australia and then they teach everyone who works under them their absolute world’s best practice,” he said. “Australia will become a better, stronger, wealthier country if we have more talent across the board. “We should be saying to the world ‘this is the best country in the world to live in, and if you are an incredibly talented person that wants to come here and make this home for the rest of your life and contribute back to this community with your sensational skills, in a multitude of ways’ (you are welcome). “We’re saying ‘no’, whereas I think we should be saying ‘yes’.” In relation to manufacturing, Macpherson Kelley workplace relations principal Andrew Douglas said: “Australia is still fairly new to transformative value-added manufacturing and we just don’t have the skills base. “We need to be able to attract the workers that will facilitate the transition like engineers, designers and others because we’re a small economy.”

Dandenong’s Bei Nienkel started picking, packing and despatching goods as a Work for the Dole activity. Now the 21-year-old is a paid supervisor for Picking and Warehouse Solutions (PAWS) Fulfilment in Dandenong South. “It’s a good experience. You get to learn new things every day because it’s never the same thing,” he said. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams visited the warehouse space on Wednesday 12 April. They met the PAWS team and workers from other Whitelion social enterprises Wheelly Good Coffee and fruit2work. PAWS recruits at-risk 16 to 25-year-olds to pick, pack and despatch orders. Supervisors receive support from trained youth workers to help each recruit to grow and gain transferrable skills. Whitelion CEO Mark Watt said PAWS had been in Dandenong South for three and a half years, and operated from the MarkitForce warehouse. “They were committed to helping young people as well,” he said. “We have homeless outreach centres in Dandenong, so we’re working with the homeless kids, and we know that work and social enterprise is fantastic for homeless kids because it really gives them a hope and a future.” Dean Pretty, 24, used to live on the street in Melbourne. Whitelion’s Chatterbox Bus gave him comfort and support. “They just made me feel like someone wanted to listen, because no one ever did,” he said. The service helped him to access rehab then linked him up with Wheelly Good Coffee. Dean now works on the fruit2work project, packing and delivering fruit from a warehouse at the Melbourne Market in Epping. Georgina Shaw, 17, ran away from home and got caught up with drug use. “Dean (Pretty) was one of my closest friends through that stage,” she said. Once he’d turned his life around, he returned and offered her a job with Wheelly Good Coffee. Georgina was “trying to change” and jumped at the opportunity. “Having a job, giving me something to do really, really changed my life,” she said.

Pio in a league of his own By Victoria Stone-Meadows It’s not every day a person is remembered and commemorated from two sides of the earth, but Cranbourne man Pio Qualizza was not an everyday man. Known for his award-winning big vegetables and his warm and welcoming demeanour, Mr Qualizza was a man in a league of his own. Born in the small Italian country town of San Leonardo, Mr Qualizza and his wife Filomena made an intrepid journey to Australia in 1959. He fell in love with this big country and carved himself a home at a farm he dubbed “The Promised Land” on Pearcedale Road in Cranbourne South. It was from The Promised Land that Mr Qualizza grew pumpkins and other vegetables of massive proportions that would go on to win prize after prize at agricultural shows and events. Sadly in 2007, at the age of 78, Mr Qualizza developed late onset Parkinson’s disease to which he succumbed 10 years later on Wednesday 19 April 2017. Daughter Margaret Qualizza remembers her father as a loveable funny man who would burst into song at the drop of a hat. “He loved a joke and was a very funny man,” she said.

Pio Qualizza and his 50 odd kg Pumpkin. 29455 “Mum and Dad made the farm an open house; Dad even did the concreting on the drive way and wrote a great big ‘welcome’ in the wet concrete.” “Everyone that came to visit came into the house and Mum made cheese and Dad gave people meat and wine; on the weekends the house was full of friends and family.” Ms Qualizza said while her father worked hard all his life to carve out his own slice of paradise in Australia, it never dampened his spirit for songs, stories

and jokes. “He was an adorable father, a funny man, and he would always have a joke and absoutely loved to sing,” she said. “He had a good voice and would always encourage us to sing. He had an unquenchable happy nature and loved to tell a funny story.” Upon his passing, Mr Qualizza was surrounded by his whole family except his youngest son Ivan who happened to be in San Leonardo at the time. The younger Mr Qualizza asked a favour of the small church in the remote town and the bells of the church in San Leonardo rang for 10 minutes to mark the passing of Pio Qualizza in Australia. Pio Qualizza is survived by his wife Filomena, and children Margaret, Paula, Mario, and Ivan.

Spoljaric makes his move By Nick Creely Cranbourne premiership star and fivetime Wookey Medallist Steven Spoljaric, has defected to rival club Springvale South in a major shock to the DDCA competition. The 40-year-old, arguably the finest player to ever don the whites in the competition’s rich history, has agreed to terms at Alex Nelson Reserve for next season. It will become the third club that Spoljaric will represent in the DDCA, after also winning a flag with Parkfield. Bloods’ skipper Craig Slocombe, the man responsible for enticing Spoljaric to the club, said the signing has been in the works “for a couple of weeks”. “He’s a professional cricketer, so I’m sure it’s just a job to him, but it’s great,” he said. Bloods’ president, Peter Lawler was thrilled with the signing, and said that the offer put in front of Spoljaric was “reasonable”. “We’re happy - the offer was nothing over the top, but decent enough,” he said. Lawler said they also expect Malinga Bandara to come back to the club for the 2017/18 season. “Malinga won’t be here for the start of the season, but we would be expecting him to be here by Christmas at least at this stage,” he said. Cranbourne president Andy Ligt, who is also a good mate with Spoljaric, said the club has been aware for about a week that he was leaving after a mutual parting of ways, but is pretty shocked at the club that picked him up. “I’m pretty surprised where he’s gone to, to be honest, but anyway,” he said. “We wish Spolly all the best, he’s done some great things for our club we thank him for his contribution, and for winning us grand finals.”

Well-deserved award to a devoted Cooper By Russell Bennett Kooweerup captain-coach Mark Cooper sure had a season to remember in the West Gippsland Cricket Association. Not only was he part of the WGCA’s successful Country Week squad, he also guided the Demons to a Premier division title in a grand final for the ages. And he did it by leading from the front - belting 880 runs across all WGCA competitions at an average of 63, and taking 25 wickets at 11.9. On Friday night at the Kooweerup Community Centre, his unbelievable 2016/17 campaign ensured that he was the runaway winner of the prestigious Terry Stephenson Medal for the best player in the Premier division. Cooper polled 23 votes to win from Demons team-mate Jess Mathers on 15, Pakenham skipper Dom Paynter on 14, and Tooradin team-mates Russell Lehman and Cal O’Hare on 13. And to think, just a few short years ago Cooper contemplated walking

away from cricket to focus on golf. “At that stage (three years ago) I was probably a twos player,” he said. “Cricket just wasn’t as high a priority and at the time I almost took up golf. “But I made the decision that if I wanted to keep playing cricket, I had to challenge myself.” So, into the latter stages of his playing career, he sought out some coaching. That sums Cooper up - he’s always hell-bent on improving, and he never does anything by half measures. Cooper is a big believer in positive psychology, and it’s obvious - not only in the way he plays, but in the way he leads men. He’s no stranger to individual accolades in his cricket - whether they are in the WGCA, or in his previous stints in the MPCA, DDCA, or WDCA. But they’re not a focus. Instead, he’s far more concerned with team success. “If they happen, they happen,” he said of individual awards like the Terry

Stephenson Medal. “But you can’t do it without your team-mates, and the whole team bought in to the way we wanted to play. “The group was extremely flexible and everyone was able to sacrifice their own games for the team.” Cooper didn’t originally have himself in the mix as a bowling option for the Demons this year, but through continual hard work at his craft as a spinner, he got to the stage where he felt he could contribute consistently. It’s one of the ways his game has improved since the Demons last saw him in the competition - when he led Kooweerup’s famous old rival, Cardinia. “When I took over at Kooweerup I didn’t know a lot about the boys, but I challenged them to get better,” he said, adding that the all-around ability of the team allowed him to play his shots and back himself, knowing he had so much support behind him. Cooper said the WGCA’s senior

awards night on Friday provided the victorious Kooweerup group with the opportunity to celebrate their flag win with the actual flag, and reflect on their achievement. But he lamented the relatively poor turnout of first XI and Country Week players from across the competition. He said the top-end talent of the WGCA stacked up against plenty of others, but many players didn’t tend to take ownership of their competition. “The talent is there, we just need to promote it,” he said. Cooper was also named in the WGCA’s Premier division team of the year alongside Neil Barfuss (Cardinia), Dwayne Doig (Cardinia), Tom Hussey (Tooradin), Russell Lehman (Tooradin), Jess Mathers (Kooweerup), Cal O’Hare (Tooradin), Leigh Paterson (Merinda Park), Dom Paynter (Pakenham), Chris Smith (Pakenham), Ben Spicer (Kooweerup), and Tommy Tyrrell (Pakenham). Mobile barbecue for TigerSharks By Russell Bennett For many sporting clubs, simply having clubrooms to call their own can be so easily taken for granted. But not the Casey TigerSharks Swimming Club. They don’t have rooms to call their own - to foster a real club atmosphere to galvanise the members. But, thanks to Berwick Mitsubishi and a host of generous local businesses, they now have a $5000 trailer and mobile barbecue they can use for vital fundraising activities. “It’s come about through one of our parents within the club,” TigerSharks president Amanda Koukounaras said. “We don’t have clubrooms,

so to create that social feel within the club we really need something to galvanise us together. “When we have events we can take this, roll it out and just have it be that item that galvanises us together as a club. “One of the dads in the club had a relationship with the guys at Berwick Mitsubishi. He had a chat with them, and fortunately enough for us it evolved from there.” But the TigerSharks are adamant that their new piece of equipment will be shared throughout the local community. “We’ll look to make it a community piece of equipment and invite other sporting clubs within the area to use it and let them know it’s there,” Amanda said. “Sometimes I think that sport

loses its focus and loses what it actually means to the community, and sport becomes so much about how we win, when we win, and why we win as opposed to why we do it in the first place. “This is five years in the making of trying to find a partner we can align ourselves with who could see what we were trying to do and assist in providing it. “This is a piece of community equipment. It’s TigerSharks and it’s ours and we’re fortunate to have it, but it’s really a community piece of equipment.” Berwick Mitsubishi graciously donated the trailer, while Ray and his team at MW Toolbox, and Dennis and Matt at Fine Line Refinishers also contributed to the project.

Eagles dare, down Doves By David Nagel Reigning premier Cranbourne has regained its insatiable appetite for the contest to run away with a 26-point victory over Doveton in the SEFNL match of the day at Robinson Oval. The Eagles were challenged heavily by the Doves for three quarters before producing their best football of this campaign kicking five goals in a stunning 12-minute burst- to bank their most important four points for the season. The Doves had been dominant in their opening two wins and continued that form - starting impressively. Livewire forwards Michael Henry and Nick Battle kicked the only two goals of the opening term, capitalising on the great work of ruckman Russell Gabriel and an intense brand of footy around the stoppages. Harrison Bird had his hands full with Henry, while Alwyn Davey looked dangerous on Jordy Bertrand, but faded as the

game wore on. Henry had four shots at goal in the first term but failed to have the scoreboard impact that his brilliant play deserved. Coach Aaron Davey moved full-forward Taylor Joyce out to centre half forward in an attempt to drag Cranbourne’s best defender Brandon Osborne out of the goal-square. Osborne kept former Carlton star Brendan Fevola goal-less when he last visited Robinson Oval in round seven last year and looked impenetrable once again. Gabriel, Sam Raru and Henry combined for the cleanest centre clearance at the start of the second term, but it was the Eagles who took control. Goals to Troy Tharle, whose strong hands were proving a nightmare for Matt Jameson, and others to Shaun Marusic and Keenan Hughes saw the Eagles take an eight-point lead, 3.5 to 2.3, into half time. The tempo lifted in the second half, the Doves kicking four goals to three in the third term

to trail by a point at the final change. Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey almost knew what was about to happen. “We spoke at half time about paying the price, and this is where we need to dig deep and give everything,” Goosey roared. “I know we’ve got the run in the legs, but if they get a good start don’t drop your heads.” How prophetic those words would prove to be with the Doves taking the lead through Battle, just 18 seconds in, before the Eagles took command. They kicked five on the trot to run away with the contest. Jake Carosella kicked the first, converting a brilliant passage of play, before Khaled ‘Cyril’ Kandakji kicked two including a goal-of-the-year contender from directly in front of the Doveton members. Cyril brought back memories of Peter Daicos with a magnificent dribble kick from the boundary while running at full tilt.

Marusic, Osborne and Tharle were outstanding for the winners while ruckman Michael Boland fought back well in the second half after a slow start against Gabriel. Wingmen Dylan Cavalot and Aaron Bower provided plenty of run while Jayden Sullivan, Brandon Wapshott and Dillan Bass provided Osborne with support down back. Youngster Nick Darbyshire also showed clean hands at important times in the match. Gabriel and Henry scored top marks for the Doves who will be bitterly disappointed with their last-quarter fadeout. Jameson stuck to his guns against Tharle while Mitch Woolgar had an absorbing battle with hungry Cranbourne forward Keenan Hughes. The remaining games in SEFNL were all one-sided, Officer scoring 92-point victory over Hampton Park, Beaconsfield far too strong for Pakenham, while Narre Warren gave Tooradin a 48-point lesson at Westernport Oval. Seagulls prove their mettle By David Nagel Tooradin has rubber stamped itself as a ridgy-didge premiership contender after surviving an epic battle with reigning premier Narre Warren at the Tooradin Rec. Reserve. The Seagulls prevailed by four goals, 47-43, in a contest that saw no more than a goal separate the teams in the first three quarters of play. The Seagulls have been commanding this season, winning their opening three games by 43, 17 and 15, but coach Kelly Andrews said this was far and away the most satisfying victory of all. “We haven’t had a game where we’ve had to grind it out together and that’s going to hold our group in good stead moving forward,” Andrews said. “We need games like this to prepare us for the tough battles ahead; it’s not realistic to be winning by 15 goals every week and still be prepared for those big games later in the season. It was really good game of netball, a really high standard and that’s great for the competition.” Both teams had star players sitting on the sidelines with the Seagulls missing gun defender Jess Maher, due to a mix up with the scoresheet, while Magpie goaler Tayla Shannon was on crutches after sustaining a serious leg injury last week. Neither side would concede an inch with great battles all over the court. Narre mid-courters Leigh Taylor, Britt Mashado and Erin Clark had their hands full with Seagulls Sara Duncan, Emma Iacovou and Jess Cox, while defenders Bec Kinna and Ebony Dolan lifted when the Seagulls needed it most. owed a remarkable contest at Robinson Reserve where Doveton produced a miracle last quarter to take a 48-46 victory over Cranbourne. The Doves were comprehensively outplayed in the first half, trailing by six at quarter time and eight at half time before slowly working their way into the contest. The Doves brought the margin back to six at the final break before producing a brilliant 16-8 final term to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Rahni Samason had a 12-goal last quarter against a serious defender in Tara Cecil. Hampton Park will head into the toughest part of its season on a high after a hard-fought 43-35 victory over Officer at Starling Road. The Redbacks, who face Beaconsfield, Narre Warren and Tooradin in the next three rounds, made it two wins on the trot after a dominant third term. The Redbacks led by three at half time but rubber stamped victory with a 10-5 blitz in the third quarter. Shannon Rennison (goal keeper) and Karli Foster (goal defence) ramped up their defensive efforts, getting the better of Kangaroos goalers Sarah Smith (goal shooter) and Sam Neil (goal attack), while Maddi Hanlen (centre) and Chloe Birch (wing attack) took control through the midcourt. And Beaconsfield has shown no hangover from last week’s terrific victory over Narre Warren, scoring a comfortable 57-26 win over Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve.
