Strong buyer demand, solid population growth, low property stocks and record low interest rates have contributed to the figures.

New figures released by the Real Estate Institute of Victoria show that Pakenham is still one of the state’s most affordable suburbs. REIV President Joseph Walton said Pakenham had experienced solid price growth in the March quarter, with buyers increasingly looking for value for money in the city’s outer suburbs.

Pakenham’s median house price increased 9.8 per cent in the March quarter to $450,000. The median unit/apartment price increased 3.7 per cent in the first three months of 2017 to $335,000. Despite the increases, Pakenham came in as the fifth most affordable suburb in Victoria. “Pakenham remains attractive to

Anzac spirit is renewed By Bonny Burrows and Helena Adeloju Scores of residents have paid their respects to Australia’s servicemen and women this week at Anzac commemorations across the region. An estimated 150 Beaconsfield locals attended a Sunday afternoon service, commencing with a march from Beaconsfield Fire Station to the town’s cenotaph. Keynote speaker Vivienne Williams OAM spoke on animals of the war, the “forgotten army” and the important role they played. Musical items were presented by Cranbourne Salvation Army Recorder Ensemble and Casey Choir. Prayers and blessings were led by Graeme Dunkley, Senior Pastor, Beaconsfield Baptist Church. Pakenham’s Anzac Day dawn service commenced at the crack of light on Tuesday. Against the backdrop of heavy grey cloud and rain, the strains of a lone bagpipe rang out. Hundreds of residents had gathered to pay their respects to family, fellow comrades or

Apex axed, not dead By Cam Lucadou-Wells La Trobe MP Jason Wood has maintained his rage against “gangs” of South Sudanese and Pacific Islander youths, despite police “breaking the back of Apex”. Mr Wood, who is chairing a federal parliamentary inquiry into migrant settlement outcomes, said the Apex gang had grown rapidly since “perpetuating” the 2016 Moomba riots. It was “engulfing other gangs and becoming more violent and daring by the day”. “Most members of these violent youth gangs like Apex are of Sudanese or Islander descent and are often new migrants to our country,” he said. Victoria Police’s Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton reportedly told the inquiry on 12 April that Apex was a “non-entity”. Police had charged most of the gang’s leaders, who were now in jail. The group was “in recession”, Deputy Commissioner Patton said. The inquiry heard that numbers of Victorian youth offenders born in New Zealand and South Sudan were “overrepresented” compared to their population numbers. Young people born in South Sudan made up 1.56 per cent of alleged youth offenders in Victoria, even though South Sudanese account for 0.23 per cent of the youth population, according to official crime statistics. Casey Council had no detailed statistics on migrant youth committing “antisocial behaviour” in its municipality, according to its inquiry submission. There was data supporting an increase in youth crime, particularly in low socio-economic pockets of Casey, the council’s community life director Steve Coldham wrote. Mr Wood said police had indicated they’d “broken the back of Apex” but “it’s important to understand that young criminals like this don’t have

Jason Wood has maintained a tough stance on Apex. 161602 a formalised structure like other bikie gangs”. “It’s more complex to determine whether or not they’re gone. “The issue that is still very apparent is that when it comes to aggravated burglary and riots and affrays, Sudanese youth come in at second, and when it comes to serious assaults they’re third highest on the list.” Mr Wood said much of the evidence at the hearing focused on employment and community involvement.

On 19 April, Mr Wood chaired a round table with Casey and Cardinia mayors, Les Twentyman and community groups on ‘breaking down barriers’ with young offenders. The forum looked at using sport as a way to keep young people busy and avoiding boredom. Mr Wood has also proposed “onestrike” bail laws for serious, violent crimes, and backed the Federal Government’s deportation of young people on visas for violent offences.

He would also specifically tackle violent youth gangs with a database on gangs, and a joint state-federal police anti-gang taskforce in Melbourne’s west and south-east. Mr Wood said a collaborative approach, including better targeted services for migrant youths, was needed to ensure young people didn’t “fall into this Apex abyss”. Centre for Multicultural Youth, in its submission to the inquiry, warned that deporting youth offenders was

“disproportionate and inappropriate”. “Government and political leaders must cast aside media pressure, consider the facts and the evidence about what works and without panic develop and oversee the implementation of effective social policy.” Casey Council had submitted to the inquiry that the issue was compounded by a lack of migrant settlement services, lack of federal crime prevention grants and lack of funding to support socially isolated migrant parents.

Anzac’s letters of love By Cam Lucadou-Wells A chance find in a set of drawers has unearthed an Anzac soldier’s 100-yearold letters to a woman he hoped would be his sweetheart. Former Casey mayor Rob Wilson, of Narre Warren, has self-published more than 20 of the discovered letters and cards of Sergeant Dudley Wood in his book Lost Letters. The World War I letters were written by Sgt Wood to Edie Talbett - the sister of his best mate Norman. More than a muse, she was also someone that Sgt Wood was keen upon. “How many other young blokes over in the war had a girlfriend back home?” Mr Wilson said. “And they hope against hope not only that they survive, but that they still have a girl if they get back.” At 72, Mr Wilson, a keen family historian, had recently collated primary history into books about his Scottish-immigrant father and his triple-great-grandmother. “I was excited that these letters written 100 years ago were now discovered 100 years later. “I have a study full of history stuff. “If I give all of that to one person, it will probably get thrown out, so I decided to put that history into a book.“ In this most recent collection, Sgt Wood’s letters reveal a “feisty” relationship with Edie. Ultimately, they both married other people. He moved to the Tasmanian city of Launceston, had a family with an Irish nurse Martha Shannon who cared for him during the war, and worked as a dental technician. On 2 January, 1917, he wrote - rather flippantly - to Edie that he lost his right leg just above the knee. The injury caused lingering pain and dashed

Don’t go out for a walk and lose them as it is a painful thing, but if you give any cheek, I will be able to swipe you with it.” There was then a break in Sgt Wood’s letters to Edie. He put it down to getting such a shock hearing that she was engaged. “Allow me to congratulate you on having such a good fellow, but of

course, it has been a great blow to me. “I have had my eye on you for a long time now, but I have been too shy to pop the question and now it is too late.” Sgt Wood was wounded during the AIF’s first landing in Gallipoli in April 1915. According to an extract from Sgt Wood’s journal, he “got a bullet through my cap; then shrapnel took my rations; later a bullet bored a hole in my mess tin, and I was struck in five places by shrapnel.”

He convalesced from his wounds during a “holiday” in Malta in May, and wrote to Edie: “We got some hurry up the first day as we landed under fire and had to take every foot of ground while we had no artillery to back us up. “You have no idea what it is like till you are there to see for yourself. “You will hear all about things in the papers I suppose, so it is no good me telling you, but you get more excitement out of it than shooting at rabbits.” He was awarded a Distinguished

Conduct Medal for conspicuous bravery. On 20 August 1915, Sgt Wood solemnly wrote to his best friend Norman’s mother to offer his “deepest sympathy”. He told her that Norman had died, minutes before he was due to be relieved of his post at Lone Pine, Gallipoli. A photo of Norman’s grave “in sight of the sea on the first hill” at Gallipoli was taken by Sgt Wood and sent to the bereaved mother. Norman and he had been among the first Australians to enlist for the war. In reply to Edie, he writes in October about finding out about her late brother Norman’s demise. “It broke me up for the rest of the day, and we have lost a good pal, but he is as well off as here, and one never knows whose turn it will be next, just as God wills.” The letters were recently found among papers in a set of drawers by Edie Talbett’s grand-daughter, Patricia Greenwood-Smith. She contacted Sgt Wood’s daughter-in-law Betty in Launceston, who in turn excitedly told her cousin - the book’s author Mr Wilson. In his book, Mr Wilson has added letters written by Sgt Wood’s brother Vasey, who also fought in World War I where he was killed. There are also letters, photos and biographies of Mr Wilson’s relatives who performed military service, including George Connelly Hazlett - a Boer War veteran and a World War I Lighthorseman who fought in the famous charge in Beersheba. Mr Wilson has more family history projects on the go. For him it’s a race to get as much down in books before that history is cast away.

Crazy, colourful floats paraded through central Pakenham at the weekend in celebration of the 41st annual Yakkerboo Festival. The festival, in honour of the town’s mythical-bunyip icon Mr Yakkerboo, attracted an estimated 6000 peopleyoung and old - to the streets for the float parade and family fun day. This year’s float parade strongly featured the festival’s Disney theme, with cartoon characters and Disney princesses adorning displays created by children and local community groups. As someone who both drives and until recently had a bike the obvious answer in part, is NOT to ride on main roads or roads where there is increased traffic. Pakenham is blessed with nice footpaths and tracks already, eg Toomuc Creek. What arrant nonsense by the RPM person to make comparisons between Pakenham and Europe/Asia. The tyranny of distance that we face here, the topography, the indifferent public transport and the need for commuting to and from work makes the car a necessity rather than a convenience for many. We are not a scaled-up version of Copenhagen/Stockholm etc. Talk about comparing apples with oranges. The knee-jerk solution is to create bike

lanes which compound the problem by creating bottlenecks and increases congestion, nose to tail accidents and increased risk-taking behaviour including the now daily “road rage“ incidents. Just have a look at the daily Monash Freeway debacle and streets where these so called “initiatives“ are in use in inner city suburbs. You may wish to review Monash safety figures too? The facts don’t necessarily reflect the warm and fuzzy rhetoric. Why any person other than a MAMIL or MAWIL would want to ride on main roads which are in part funded to a much larger degree by motorists is beyond me and rather targeting them perhaps Sgt Ziebell should be concentrating on cyclists without helmets, crossing roads on the red, riding across roads on school/pedestrian crossings, unsupervised bike riding children in streets, bikes without lights/reflectors, tandem abreast riding and poorly maintained bikes with bald tyres to start with. Then Messrs Ziebell and Moonen you might wish to start on cyclist training too. If you are serious about safety, stay away from the things that are going to hurt you - it's simple. In response to a motion led by Mayor Aziz in Casey Council on 18 April. While I fully support and advocate the removal of graffiti, I find the actions of council riddled with hypocrisy. All Casey ratepayers will pay for signage in an effort to shame State Government representatives into action, signage attached with phone numbers and statements of responsibility. Which leads me to the definition of hypocrisy - “the behaviour of people who do things that they tell other people not to do“. Mayor Aziz, please explain. Why did council give a real estate agent four hours on a wet Friday afternoon to remove a signage board ? Why did council threaten legal prosecution on another private resident with a daily $750 fine for signage on his private property? Why has council threatened a “covert operation“ on residents of Berwick Springs when they want to name and shame the fact that you as our ward councillor and Casey Council as a whole did not consult thousands of Berwick Springs residents as far back as 2014 on a proposal that will see nearly 200 trees cut down from our parklands and entry? Why have you turned your back by refusing to answer emails and calls? Why is it and I allege you have instructed your councillors not to attend public rallies held by residents or accept personal invites with residents to hear their concerns? Why have you instructed Casey planners not to attend meetings when other councillors have tried to facilitate their own meetings, with or without you? Why have several councillors personally called me and I allege apologised for your appalling behaviour, in their words ? Where is your apology? Why do you refuse to answer questions on record raised by residents in public question time at council meetings on several occasions? Why do you refer to name calling of residents and admit it on record in council? Cr Aziz as mayor of Casey and our ward councillor maybe Berwick Springs residents should display your number on their signs (funded by themselves not ratepayers) in an effort to display their feeling of betrayal on your council’s behalf. Finally, why did you and your council vote on 21 February to protect the rights of a developer in “ fairness“ over the rights of 3000 residents who you have failed to consult to this very day - or advocate on their behalf in response to the mess your council was part of? Our council has a strategy to develop pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure; a draft was published in January this year and council was seeking community responses. The vision is grand, but realistic, yet the challenges faced by council will be very significant. It is not just about the money, but it is all about our community supporting council as it has to deal with the myriad of stakeholders who will say that it is all too hard and we do not need any of it. It is time for all of us to realise that our roads do not need to be made significantly safer; we need more people driving more safely and we need dedicated paths for walkers and riders alike. road accident rates by all staying at home cowered by the possibility of becoming a statistic. We won’t grow as individuals and community until we acknowledge our need to reflect on the past, look beyond the present and dream of a future that will allow the changes that are needed to become reality, if not for ourselves then definitely for our children. I don’t ever remember meeting Ken, and in thinking of his grieving family, I wonder if there is any better way for any of us to honour him than in supporting council in turning the council’s vision into reality - dedicated paths for walkers and bike-riders throughout the whole shire. One of a kind By Cam Lucadou-Wells It’s no exaggeration to say Tony Burrage’s unique open-air racer, the Rennmax 23B is a oneof-a-kind. The stylish 52-year-old vehicle built by Sydney racing-car builder Bob Britton is the only one in Australia, according to Mr Burrage. A long fan of historic racing, Mr Burrage, of Narre Warren North, chose the low-slung car to race during his retirement from mechanical engineering 18 years ago. He doesn’t mind racing in the open air, though “when it’s raining, it’s not too bright”. “It drives quite well when you learn how to handle it,” he says.

“You know any car built by Bob Britton will be a good one.” Mr Burrage loved the car as a near exact copy of the alluring Lotus 23B shape - at a fraction of the price of a similar-vintage Lotus. But it was in poor shape at the time. The enthusiast has since tended to the car, making it mechanically sound and gleaming with a lick of British Racing Green paint. Along the way, he was surprised to find out there are 29 subtly different tints of British Racing Green. Though without a speedo, the car - with its rebuilt 1600-cc twin-cam rear-mounted engine

- hits estimated speeds of up to 180 km/h on the track. It however feels faster than that, being low to the ground and particularly when he’s approached a corner too fast, Mr Burrage says. The car is a great drive but not at the “sharp end” of his group M class - which includes open-air sports cars between 1961-'65 such as some pretty pacey Brabhams and Elfins. Mr Burrage races it in historic racing meets about five times a year, including one of his favourite tracks at Winton. He’ll be heading to the Historic Winton weekend with 400 riders and drivers and displays of 2000 historic vehicles on 27 and 28 May.

There are a few ways of ascertaining your borrowing capacity. Firstly, you can walk into a bank and ask to speak to their loan manager. The positive is that you are going straight to the bank, so they have a fair idea what they are talking about. The downside is going directly to a bank limits your options. Just like your circumstances, each lender is entirely different from the other in terms of the standards they set on borrowing requirements. Unfortunately, going directly to the bank restricts your ability to test the market and get the best loan product that meets your specific needs.

A mortgage broker can be another option in getting more information. The positive of mortgage brokers is that they aren’t tied to one lender - they have access to more lenders and are able to source competitive loans. Traditionally, mortgage brokers are affiliated with an aggregator (ie: Mortgage Choice, Aussie) meaning they will operate under a recognised brand name, but basically run their own operation. Dealing with mortgage brokers affiliated to specific aggregators can also reduce your ability to test the lending market usually these aggregators have accreditation with only a certain number of lenders. The bigger the aggregator, the more lenders they can source loans through. So where do you start? You can come and visit me - I would love the opportunity to assist, obligation free of course! But if it’s not me you see first, the next best option is to start with a mortgage broker. For the reasons above, mortgage brokers have access to a greater distribution of lenders and their loan products. They can also give you qualification on the spot. If you aren’t quite ready for a mortgage application, they can provide you with a solid plan to get you in a position where you will be able to meet the lending requirements of the major banks. Ask plenty of questions, expect good information and answers so that you can be educated on the requirements of applying for a mortgage.

Rebecca’s Olympics dream By Nick Creely The accolades for 15-year-old Rebecca Henderson are coming faster than her ability to complete a triathlon. With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics merely three years away, the young athlete is doing everything in her power to represent the country she loves. Rebecca, from Berwick, recently travelled to Sydney Olympic Park to compete in the Athletics Australia National Championships, where she won the Under 17 Girls 5km Racewalk National Championship - her fourth overall win in what has been a remarkable junior career to date. The Casey Cardinia Athletics Club product said it was an honour to represent Victoria and to claim another piece of the puzzle in her aim for Olympic glory. “It was very exciting - I’ve raced at the Sydney track a few times and done quite well so I was hoping I could do the same this time,” she said. “It is a great feeling to represent your State and it felt great to

win the National Championship again. I was very happy as it was my main goal for race-walking for the year.” Rebecca is also prominent in the world of Open Water Swimming, where she only months ago came eighth in Australia at the Australian Open Water Championships, as well as triathlons, in which she excels more than any junior in the state. She said training is hard work and gets her to the level needed to perform, but it’s something she enjoys and thrives on. “I really enjoy doing the training so that makes it a lot easier,” she said. “I have a really good training squad for race-walking with Simon Baker and my swim training is with Casey Tigersharks. “I just make sure I am really organised so that I can fit in everything that I want to do while also keeping up with my school work. “The ultimate goal for me would be to represent Australia at the Olympics. If I keep training hard and enjoying myself I believe I can get there.”

In Penrith, just last week, Rebecca shone brightly in the Triathlon Championships, coming ninth overall in the country and first among a talented bunch of Victorian athletes. It’s not the first time in the last twelve months that she has put her name up in lights - announcing her name on the big stage by claiming glory in the Sprint Distance at Challenge Melbourne for 15 to19-year-olds and then finishing third overall in the Elite Females in Race 5 of the Active Tri-Series at Mordialloc on 19 March, she then was the first female across the line over all ages in the Channel Challenge in San Remo. Still fairly new to the Triathlon scene, Rebecca said she fell in love with the sport due to the multi-dimensional style in which you need to perform. “My love for triathlons came more recently as I have only been competing in Triathlons for a couple of years. “I did a few for fun but I didn’t really like the bike riding that much at the start as I wasn’t very experienced at it but then I

The Pakenham Warriors’ undefeated streak to start the new Division 2 men’s Big V basketball season has stretched to five games after a 14-point win at home over the Mildura Heat on Saturday night, 80-66. The Warriors opened with a commanding 21-9 opening quarter and capitalised in the second, extending the margin to 13 by the main break. The Heat made their run in the third, but the Warriors steadied in the last with a 22-16 term to close out the contest. Pleasingly for Pakenham, Trent Lee top-scored with just 17 points while Nick Ross added 13 as the side’s only other scorer to reach double-digits. This truly was a whole team performance with contributions from top to bottom. Though the Warriors could only manage 41 per cent shooting from the field, Lee shone with 8-11 to go along with his four boards and three assists. Skipper Ben Gaze had a rough night from both the field and the free-throw line but still finished with a near doubledouble (9 points and 10 boards). Pakenham’s intensity was there to see throughout the clash, more than doubling Mildura in second chance points (11 to 5) and bench production (23 points to 9). That said, there’s still plenty for Brent Russell’s group to improve on - particularly its horrid free throw shooting. On Saturday, that number dipped to just 37 per cent as the Warriors could manage to drain just 13 of their 35 attempts from the charity stripe.

Eagles clip Magpies wings By David Nagel It may have slipped under the radar during the pre-season, but Beaconsfield is now fully in the South East Football Netball League spotlight after a gutsy 26-point victory over Narre Warren. The Eagles travelled to Kalora Park with a massive task ahead, trying to win just its second home-and-away fixture against the Magpies in 13 years. All the pre-season talk centred on Narre Warren’s strong pre-season recruiting and how the Magpies looked set to throw down the gauntlet to both Berwick and Cranbourne. Meanwhile, down at Holm Park Reserve, a new coaching staff was appointed, some solid but unspectacular types were brought in, and what’s proving to be the best young crop of youngsters in the competition were slowly on the improve. But the lid has now been blown on the Eagles after a desperate win, built on brilliant ball

movement down back and some blistering leg speed that caught the Magpies napping. “Ball movement has been a heavy focus of ours in the preseason, not so much who has the footy in their hands, but where we want the football and how we want to release it,” said Beaconsfield coach Leigh McQuillen. “Narre Warren plays their ground well. They probably went in thicker and harder while we picked a side well equipped to use the whole ground. Maybe we surprised them a bit, they would be used to a different style of play from Beaconsfield, but our lateral ball movement is a big part of what we do now.” Nick Scanlon gave the Magpies the early lead in the first term before the Eagles took command. Josh Dodsworth’s brilliant pressure around the contest saw him feed Beau Dowler for the reply, before goals to Michael Misso, Daniel Johnston, Dodsworth, Kyle Van Der Pluym

and Dowler again on the siren gave the Eagles a 35-point lead at the first change. The Magpies fought back, kicking 7.4 to 2.3 in the second term to close the margin to four points. But Beacy refocused after a half-time scuffle to kick the only two goals in the third, and then kicked three goals to one in the final term for a very courageous victory. The pressure of half-forwards Dodsworth and Kyle Van der Pluym was rewarded; Dodsworth with best-on-ground honours while Van der Pluym was his side’s leading goal kicker with three. Ruckman Scott Meyer was typically brilliant, while Jake Bowd and Corey Walker were inspirational down back. Scanlon was magnificent for the Magpies, kicking four goals and having a tremendous influence around the ground. In other games, reigning premier Cranbourne had to fight hard for its 15-point victory

over a brave Tooradin at Casey Fields. The Eagles led by 25 points at the main break but had that margin cut to single digits midway through the last term. Ryan Jones, Nathan Gardiner and Zak Roscoe kicked two each for the Eagles while Nick Lang kicked five of his six goals in the second half for the Seagulls. Gulls ruckman Aisakie O’Hailpin was the dominant big man on the ground. In other games, Officer gained Princes Highway bragging rights with a 44-point victory over Pakenham while Berwick kicked the sweep, cracking the 200-point barrier in its 159-point win over Hampton Park. Brody Connelly kicked six for the Wickers who had Michael Riseley play a lead role across half back. Luke O’Brien kicked three for the Redbacks who now face some clearer waters after an extremely tough start to the season.

Beacy girls down Magpies By David Nagel Beaconsfield has finally ended the magnificent 21game winning streak of Narre Warren with a spectacular 49-46 victory over the Magpies in a classic contest at Kalora Park. Last year’s grand finalists went head to head; the Eagles cracking the game open with a stunning 15-9 third quarter to take a fivegoal lead to the final change. Beaconsfield coach Simon O’Shanassy was thrilled with the standard of netball. “It was a great game of netball, it was a clean fierce contest played in the spirit that netball should be played,” O’Shanassy said. “It was a great game and it took our very best to beat them. They’re Narre Warren and they’ve won 21 games in a row for a reason. They’re well-drilled, wellstructured and really play well as a team.” And it’s a team that suffered some major hiccups on the weekend. The Magpies regular goal-scoring force of Gabrielle Dwyer and Tayla Shannon was missing for most of the day. Dwyer was in Canberra with elite netball duties while Shannon suffered a nasty injury in the first term. “I’m great friends with Tayla and it was really sad to see her go down, hopefully everything is fine with her,” O’Shanassy said. Goaler Bianca Sanzaro (goal shooter) held her nerve for the Eagles while Kate Murphy (wing defence ) was solid and Ash Gill (wing attack) made a big contribution after hitting the

court in the second half. Erin Clark (WD), Chloe Phillips (GS) were terrific over four quarters for the Magpies. Tooradin is primed to take on the reigning backto-back champions after consolidating top spot with a 47-32 victory over Cranbourne at Casey Fields. But the Eagles made life difficult for the visitors in the first quarter. Cranbourne defenders Tara Cecil (goal defence) and Hailey Galpin (goal keeper) kept a close watch on Tooradin goalers, smartAlexes Duff (goal shooter) and Maher (goal attack), while Steph Ryan (centre) kept paces with Shona Wells in the midcourt. But the Seagulls slowly got on top, extending their two-goal lead to seven at half time before opening up the turbos after the break. The Seagulls showed premiership-contending form in the third term, with Jess Cox moving from wing attack to goal attack and having a major impact, scoring 12 goals for the quarter. There were some positive outcomes for Cranbourne. Kayla Wilson (C) took control of the midcourt in the final term leading the Eagles to an 11-10 advantage to finish off the match. Hampton Park has chalked up its first win of the season with a 46-34 victory over a brave Berwick at Robert Booth Reserve.
