Out on the Streat A lifeline is on its way for Dandenong’s unemployed youth. Social enterprise STREAT plans to run up to 10 businesses to create jobs in the region within the next three years, its founder Rebecca Scott revealed at a SEBN Industry Breakfast at Highways in Springvale on Thursday 6 April. “We found a cluster of need in the Dandenong region,” she told her audience. “We want to operate substantial businesses here in three years’ time. “We will be committing to being in Dandenong for decades and decades.
“We want to be deeply embedded in your community.” Ms Scott spent a decade with the CSIRO before establishing STREAT in 2009. It provides employment and training to young people in need. The flagship STREAT cafe is in Collingwood and there are smaller sites around inner Melbourne. It all started when Ms Scott met a homeless boy while on holidays in Vietnam in 2004 and wondered whose responsibility he was. “I couldn’t get that small boy out of my mind,” she said. “Was he my responsibility?” On a return trip to Vietnam, Ms Scott ordered

rice paper rolls in a cafe and while waiting for her meal discovered the eatery, KOTO, was a training ground for homeless young people. “I sat crying into my rice paper rolls,” she said. She walked away thinking that business was a solution. “The meal that I’m eating right now is helping the young person that I’ve just spoken to,” she said. Ms Scott gave up her science career and signed up to work with KOTO. Her partner Kate Barrelle joined her and they spent several years on the project. “We decided to come back to Australia and help the homeless on our doorstep,” she said. “The hundreds of young people that we have
helped have proved to me that with the right support, business can change lives,” she said. The STREAT team includes psychologists, youth workers and social workers. Ms Scott said half had been involved in the juvenile justice system, 90 per cent had mental health issues and 60 per cent had experienced homelessness. “Seven years on I’m as optimistic as I was when we started STREAT that with the right supports within your business that young people, no matter where they’ve come from, can achieve great things,” she said. – See page 41 for more from the SEBN event’s guest speakers.

Ice addict armed robber By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 20-year-old man who had fathered six children and used drugs for more than a decade has been jailed for two ice-fuelled armed robberies in Springvale. The man’s own “extremely unhappy and tragic” childhood, which included a lengthy juvenile criminal history, was considered by County Court judge Meryl Sexton during sentencing on 6 April. Judge Sexton said it was a “sad situation” that the accused was still unable to read and write, never had a paid job, had no desire to end his decade-plus of drug use and didn’t know how to live in society. “I suspect that inside you’re still the angry sixyear-old who doesn’t know why he behaves like this but doesn’t know any other way to behave. “I think you’ve been let down by just about everyone who had contact with you from the age of six.
“A lot of dreadful things happened to you that made it worse.” Judge Sexton said the man was first admitted to a child psychiatric unit at six for his disturbed and aggressive behaviour. He had been abused by men as a seven-yearold, and had since been shunted between foster homes, youth detention, youth residential services, couch surfing and living on the streets. During foster care, he was introduced to drugs and crime. He started using cannabis and booze at nine, graduating to cocaine, ecstasy and speed by 11. At the age of 12, he was dealing drugs to support his drug use, and had his first stint locked up in youth detention. By his very early teens, he was addicted to ice. The man had fathered six children with six different women but never had a stable relationship, Judge Sexton said. He only had some contact with the mother of
his eldest child, and no contact with any of the children. The man had pleaded guilty to the armed robberies at a liquor store and a servo on 2 and 4 July, 2016 respectively. At the liquor store, he had approached two staff closing up about 11pm. He pressed a 15-20 centimetre kitchen knife against a worker’s back and dragged the other worker by the wrist into the store. Disguised under a hoodie, he stole the store’s cash tray with $400, and demanded the workers’ wallets with cash and a credit card, as well as cigarettes and booze. Two nights later, with the help of an accomplice, he placed a long, curved knife with a long blade on a servo counter and successfully demanded the cash tray and six tobacco pouches. The accused was jailed for three years and four months, with a non-parole period of two years.
Treats brew for the tastebuds with the best China By Casey Neill Springvale showcased its multicultural culinary offerings for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Chef Russell Bald led a Greater Dandenong Council-run tour on Friday 31 March, starting at My Cambodia Restaurant in Buckingham Avenue. He said the restaurant bought its produce fresh each day from market stalls in the Springvale shopping precinct, particularly the Balmoral Avenue area. Mr Bald pointed out the butcher where he buys his duck, a spot for cheap wombok - Chinese cabbage and a fish store. “The fish you’ll find here is not your average fish you’ll find at your fishmonger,” he said. He said Cambodian food was very aromatic and not hot. He regularly dines out on Cambodian dishes with his children. It’s really simple food but it’s done really well,” he said. The tour group tried spring rolls, special fried rice that was packed with sweet meat, cubed beef with a lemon pepper dipping sauce, laksa packed with tender prawns and calamari, lemongrass chicken and crispy, spicy chicken ribs. In Brief Immigration office may close The Immigration and Border Protection office in Dandenong could be closing its doors. On Friday 7 April, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and Bruce MP Julian Hill revealed that they’d received several phone calls informing them that the Foster Street office would be closing. “It’s beyond belief that the Immigration Department wouldn’t maintain a regional presence in Melbourne’s second city and such a multicultural area,” Mr Hill said. “It will force people to go to the CBD and does nothing for the government’s promise of jobs in the suburbs. “We will fight this.” A Department of Immigration and Border Protection spokesperson said the Dandenong office lease would expire in October. “Consultation around the future of the office is being undertaken with the affected 15 staff members, their representatives and key stakeholders,” they said. The spokesperson said that whatever the outcome, affected staff would have the opportunity to stay with the department. “The department is always looking for ways to deliver services more efficiently and equitably to all of our client groups,” they said. “In recent years, we have moved many of our services on-line. “We also provide a telephone enquiry service for clients.”

He’s put about 280 from his collection on display at the Springvale and District Historical Society headquarters. “Some of them are reproductions but they go
from Corinthian and Greek helmets, Roman helmets, through to ladies’ bonnets from the First Fleet and up to 1860s and ’70s,” he said. Mr Robinson has military hats from Australia and overseas, police hats from the 1850s to modern day and firemen’s helmets dating from the 1884 to today. The 1884 is an original from France. “I’ve got some of about 1850, original ones,” he
said. Mr Robinson found a 1868 peace hat made in Ballarat in the bottom of a box. “I haven’t paid a lot of money for them over the time,” he said. Visitors can check out the collection from noon to 4pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday until the end of July. Springvale and District Historical Society is at 7 Hillcrest Avenue, Springvale.

Looking Back 100 years ago 12 April 1917 Red Cross Workers On Wednesday evening, 4th, a meeting was held in the council chamber, town hall, for the purpose of discussing ways and means for raising funds to carry on the work of the Dandenong Red Cross Society. The president of the shire, Cr Burden, occupied the chair. It was agreed to hold a bazaar, or carnival, and delegates from local bodies are to be invited to appoint delegates to a meeting to be held on an early date, to which all interested are invited.

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society near Wonthaggi last weekend sighted a strange animal which has become known as the “Wonthaggi Monster” since it was first sighted near Wonthaggi three years ago. The men, Alf Hall of Springvale North, Johnny and Anthony Kirkwood of Devon Meadows, and Paul Debons of Springvale, sighted the animal at about 6.45am on Saturday. They say it was about the size of a greyhound but more heavily built, with a whitish body with dark stripes and patches across its back and around its head. They described the head as being round and like a cat’s head, and the tail as being bushy, but not really like a fox’s tail. This description tallies with that of the 30 others given by people who claim to have seen this monster. All who have sighted it are emphatic that there is an odd animal in the district.

5 years ago 9 April 2012 Bump and grind Greater Dandenong is overflowing with senior sides. Roy Ward asks whether the area has too many football clubs. At last count Greater Dandenong has 13 senior football clubs either within its boundaries or on its borders. That’s 13 club presidents, 13 committees, 13 senior coaches and, in most cases, the need for upwards of 44 players each weekend. And that’s before clubs try to find the numerous volunteers needed to raise funds, wash jumpers, cut oranges, and do any number of other jobs.
Adventures hit a high watermark The late Jack Johnson was the author of When the Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. To try and ease the flooding that regularly occurred, a deep channel had been dug alongside the lowest section of Heatherton Road near Dandenong Creek. This worked well for normal rainfalls, but after sustained rain in the Dandenong Ranges and Police Paddocks, it took several days for the Dandenong Creek and the surrounding flatland waters to reach their peak. When at their peak, floodwaters formed a sea from Police Road across Stud Road, across to and over Heatherton Road and around the base of the hill to the ends of Ross and David streets, which

Floodwaters reached through the swampy titree to Power Street, over Kidds Road and around the flat land that became Besley Gardens, to the St John’s school sportsground, to the Booth Reserve and what is today Myuna Farm, before it continued on towards the Carrum swamp. Floodwaters lapped the lower reaches of the rise on which The Grange homestead stood. When we could borrow enough pushbikes we
would go rabbiting out to the Police Paddocks with our dogs. During the winter when we left home early in the morning, the water along the flat stretch of Heatherton Road would only be about a foot deep and level with the wooden planks of the old bridge. But when we were coming home late in the day it could be bloody scary. On this particular day the water had risen to the middle of the bridge. We were always frightened that some of the loose planks may have washed off the bridge and we would fall into the strong current. When the barbed wire fences and the ti-tree scrub along the roadside were submerged, it was hard to know where those deep roadside channels were and we knew we could be trapped in them as well as snagged by the fencing wire. The gravel roadway butting up to the bridge was narrow and any bitumen laid was constantly
washed away by flooding, leaving deep pot holes. We had just ridden our bikes down the hill from a paddock between the top boundary of Essex Park farm and Chalcot Lodge farm on the unmade section of Power Road into the Police Paddocks. When we got to the bottom of the hill on Heatherton Road it was almost dusk, and when we saw how much the water had risen, the Kid, being the youngest and smallest of the group, said: “Shit! I’m not goin’ through that, it will be over my bloody head. I’m goin’ back up the hill and goin’ home along Power Road and Kidds Road. “If it’s this high here it will be much bloody worse at the flat section of Kidds Road and that bridge,” said Murph. “Don’t go that way,” I said. “That flat section of Power Road near the abattoirs will be awash.” – To be continued in the next Jack Looks Back.

A refugees trend-setter By Casey Neill Springvale bucked the trend in the way it welcomed refugees in the 1970s. The final marker is now in place on the Spirit of Enterprise Trail to honour that period in the area’s history. “Let’s not forget the lessons that we learnt in the early days about how much a welcome to newly-arrived people creates a great community,” organiser Merle Mitchell said. She was thrilled to launch the final trail point at Lightwood and Springvale roads on Sunday 26 March. Each landmark has links to the Enterprise Migrant Hostel, now the site of the Lexington Gardens retirement village but for decades a site that welcomed immigrants and refugees. “So many people contributed right from the very beginning when we put the first exhibition into the Melbourne Immigration Museum,” Ms Mitchell said. “That was back in November 2008.” The project has since included a commemorative rose garden and “had a big impact on a lot of people”. “It’s so important to preserve history and actually to learn the lessons from history,” she said. “Springvale was so unique and so different to every other municipality around Victoria. “It was Springvale who said, right back in 1970 ... ‘you are welcome, keep your language, keep your culture, build your places of worship, you are part of the whole’. “No other place did that. “There’s still a lot in that message for us to learn.” Ms Mitchell hoped the next step would be a board with a map of all the markers, and smaller boards at each marker site so people can walk the whole trail. She’d also like to see a community walk of the trail ending at the new Springvale community centre once it is complete.
In Brief Carjackers strike at servo Knife-wielding carjackers targeted a man rolling a cigarette at a Dandenong service station. The victim had just filled up his vehicle at the 7-Eleven on Clow Street about 11.30pm on Saturday 7 January. He’d pulled over to roll the cigarette when four men approached. One had a knife and demanded the victim get out of his vehicle, a red 2005 Ford Falcon sedan, and hand over the keys. The victim complied and the men drove off. He described them as having accents and appearing to be of Islander origin. He said they were wearing sunglasses and dark clothing. Police later recovered the car in Cranbourne.
Wallet stolen at knifepoint A knife-wielding bandit robbed a man of his wallet outside a Noble Park home. Police said the incident occurred in Noble Street about 11pm on Wednesday 29 March. A Caucasian man armed with a knife demanded his wallet and money and then fled north along Allan Street. The victim said the man was aged in his early forties, had a medium build and was wearing a black scarf or balaclava over his face, a dark blue raincoat jacket and jeans. Front door punch Councillor Matthew Kirwan launched the marker on behalf of Mayor Jim Memeti. “My first introduction to the Enterprise Project was within five minutes of being sworn in as a councillor late 2012,” he said. “I can literally remember turning around in the busy meeting rooms of the old Springvale Council Chamber seeing this older woman slowly navigating her way through the crowd from one end of the room to the other to speak to me. “She said she was Merle Mitchell and wanted to meet with to talk about the Enterprise project.” Cr Kirwan said then-Springvale Mayor Andrew Ericksen’s welcome to new arrivals was “hardly radical now, but in a time when the White Australia Policy had just ended and assimilation
was then the accepted norm it was ground-breaking”. “I started meeting more and more residents who had spent time at the Enterprise Hostel and heard their personal stories,” Cr Kirwan said. “Closer to home I learned that my mother-inlaw, who had come to Australia from Switzerland in the 1970s, had a link to Enterprise Hostel - her boyfriend at the time had stayed there.” Other markers recognise that the Multicultural Teacher’s Aide program started at Springvale Rise Primary School, Springvale Neighbourhood House was built to provide a space for cultural groups to meet, and the Springvale Road shopping centre has always reflected the ever-changing population.
Answering a knock at his front door left a Dandenong man with cuts to his face. Police said the victim was drinking in his Clow Street home with a friend when he heard the knock about 1am on Friday 31 March. He opened the door to find three men of African appearance. They pushed him into the house and punched him to the head, causing a small laceration to his forehead and minor cuts to his upper lip. The trio then left the premises. Police said one of the three men may have been an acquaintance of the victim’s friend but police had not arrested anyone over the incident. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A Keysborough man has used windows and doors to help sick kids for the past five years. Jorge Chamorro from Stegbar Windows and Doors has donated all the doors and windows for the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Good Friday Appeal auction house since 2012. “My younger sister was treated at RCH after a tree came down on her during a storm in 2005 where she suffered a broken leg,” he said. “The positivity it brings to people’s lives who are involved in making the product and then
seeing the faces of the children who benefit from the money raised. “The event brings awareness to the plight of many families who may have a child going through a life debilitating illness at RCH. “The selling of the house gives funding to this hospital but also provides the homeowner with a sense of pride in being involved with a reputable builder and worthy event.” Stegbar is one of the 400 trades and suppliers that donated resources and time to build Palace 38 in Mt Duneed, the latest Henley and Villawood house to be auctioned on Good Friday, 14 April, for RCH.
This is Henley’s 24th year of building and donating houses to the Good Friday Appeal. “We are humbled by the continued generosity of our suppliers and tradespeople, who, year after year, donate their time to help create a stunning home to be auctioned off for the RCH,” managing director Peter Hayes said. More than 500 Afghan women and children shared food, danced and played games to celebrate Afghan New Year in Dandenong. The Nowruz event was held at Menzies Hall in Dandenong on Saturday 25 March. It gave Afghan women a chance to celebrate in a safe and appropriate environment. Women and children danced well into the night to traditional music, while children enjoyed games and a jumping castle. In Brief Paws for school holiday fun Springvale and Cranbourne will host Greyhound Holiday Fun Days this school holidays. Keysborough MP and Racing Minister Martin Pakula announced a joint funding package of more than $126,000 to support the free family fun program at 10 venues across the state on Monday 3 April. Greyhound Racing Victoria will host the events, including one at Sandown on Thursday 13 April and Cranbourne on Wednesday 12 April. There’ll be big-screen interactive video games, face painting, karaoke, sporting activities and four-legged friends from the Greyhound Adoption Program. Greyhound Racing Victoria mascot Turbo will also make a special appearance. Turbo-themed activities will include a jumping castle, inflatable slide, activity bags and photo opportunities. Greyhound Holiday Fun Days entry is free and kids will receive a complimentary meal and drink. The State Government is contributing more than $63,000 towards the program, with Greyhound Racing Victoria matching the contribution. On Friday 24 March, the State Government announced that 11 hospitals would receive Medical Equipment Replacement Program funding and 10 would get Engineering Infrastructure Replacement Program cash. The total funding pool was $60 million. Dandenong Hospital will receive money to install a voice over internet protocol system. “We are making sure patients in Dandenong can get the high quality care they need and deserve, sooner and closer to home,” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said.

Magic of thinking big pays off By Casey Neill

“Everything that I was rejected for is now everything they accept me for.” Illusionist Cosentino urged about 200 Keysborough College Year 9 and 10 students to stay true to themselves, even if they were considered ‘different’. “I was constantly trying to adjust and change and fit the moulds and fit the trends,” he said. He’s now one of the most successful magicians in the world. Cosentino returned to his roots for the speaking spot and performance on Monday 27 March, having grown up in Dandenong North, Lysterfield and Endeavour Hills. He told the students that he read his first words at age 12. The delay was put down to “learning difficulties”. A magic book he discovered in a Casey library helped him to overcome those difficulties. His mum, a school principal, read instructions for performing the magic tricks aloud and demonstrated the instructions. “It wasn’t just listening to a story anymore, it was applying it,” Cosentino said. His confidence grew as his reading skills - and magic skills - improved. “I became obsessed by it,” he said. “Magic became my life. “It allowed me to be creative.” And he had to be creative to make a career from the craft. Cosentino finished Year 12 with an ATAR score of 90 and was accepted into a Bachelor of Business majoring in marketing at Monash University. He took an enduring leave of absence
after a year of study to pursue his passion. But there were no magic schools or teachers, and no one’s footsteps to follow in. “I had to create my own path because there was no path, there was no blueprint,” he said. He said the jobs the students would have in the future weren’t even created yet. “The only way we can get you prepared is to teach you to be creative, to think outside the box, to solve problems,” he said. Cosentino comes up with an idea for a trick and works backwards through the steps he’ll need to achieve the outcome he’s after. “Dream big and then work backwards,” he said. He spent 15 years trying to establish a career. He was told he didn’t have the right look, that magic wasn’t popular. Australia’s Got Talent producers had been asking Cosentino to appear on the Channel 7 show, but he’d been turning down the offer because he worried about how he’d be presented. In 2011 he accepted on the grounds that his successes and failures would both make the cut. “It was out of sheer desperation that I decided to do Australia’s Got Talent,” he said. “That’s when you get the longest lasting change if you can channel it positively.” He made the top two and leveraged off his exposure to millions of people. He successfully pitched television shows the networks had turned down earlier. “People’s perceptions had changed,” he said. “It was as if everyone caught up.” “I think about where I would be if mum hadn’t read that magic book to me.”

Red Roo home in maiden effort By Cam Lucadou-Wells An inaugural ‘March Madness’ tournament between 70 young South Sudanese basketballers left nothing on the 24/7 HOOPS court at Dandenong on 25 March. Eight teams - including three local Red Roo teams which draw players from Melbourne’s south-east, east and the La Trobe Valley - took part. As is the tradition at similar national comps, Red Roo - organised by Dandenong-based businessman James Kerr - emerged victorious. Red Roo assistant coach Wicthiel King said the tournament was based on the March Madness Tournament involving all the NCAA Division One basketball teams in the US. “We thought it would be a great idea to run the same tournament here in Australia since most of our guys and a lot of the young people ... want to play college basketball in the US.” Mr King said the tournament also filled a gap in the calendar between the South Sudanese Summer Slam in December and the National Classic competition in July. “I always wanted to run a small tournament in the south-eastern suburbs but just never had the resources and someone to believe in it. “It brings the South Sudanese community together and gives these young people something to do during that waiting period.” Many of the Red Roo players are prepared for SAT tests in May as part of winning a US college basketball scholarship. Mr Kerr, who has devoted hours of time and his own money to educating, feeding and supporting the Red Roo players, believes the players are talented enough to succeed. He says the players will have to study hard to pass the SAT - a general English and maths exam that is equivalent to VCE. “They’re going to be doubly smart - taking on the VCE and the SAT at the same time. “They’re going to be smart kids, nice smart athletes - that’s what I want them to be. “If they’re not prepared to pay the price, get out of the program.”

Holden heaven More than 400 Holdens rolled into Dandenong for a fresh take on an annual fund-raiser. The Dandenong All Holden Car Show at the Dandenong Showgrounds on Sunday 2 April featured expanded trophy categories, lots of food, advice and demonstrations from experts and kids’ activities. New event chairman John Ternel said plans to attempt a Guinness World Record for the most paraded Holdens was shelved at the 11th hour. “The word paraded has two interpretations in Australian and British dictionaries,” he said. “They wanted us to parade the cars over a three-kilometre circuit. Greater Dandenong’s newest litter advocate is taking to the streets to tackle cigarette butts. The #MSNOBUTTS mascot will educate
residents about the importance of binning their butts and distributing free personal cigarette butt bins to make it even easier to do the right thing. “Our waterways are particularly vulnerable to cigarette butt litter, which is easily swept in to stormwater drains,” Mayor Jim Memeti said. Free butt bins are also available from the council’s customer service centres. Pop-up drive-through recycling days collected more than 178 tonnes of rubbish and recycling from Greater Dandenong residents. Council engineering services director Julie Reid said nearly 2000 cars attended Greaves Reserve in Dandenong on Saturday 4 March and the Springvale customer service centre on Saturday 18 March. She said Springvale had some long queues but staff processed a car every 37 seconds. Ms Reid said that 53 per cent of the 178 tonnes of items collected were reusable and recyclable. The council received 10 tonnes of e-waste, 11 tonnes of clothing and general household items, 150 mattresses and 220 bikes. Ms Reid said there’d be a budget proposal for the events to return.

Noodles unleashed There’s a new dog in town at Sandown’s Greyhounds Entertainment precinct. Adding to the already popular Dawson’s Bistro and Bar, The Trackside Noodle Bar at the Sandown Greyhound Racetrack was welcomed into the world last Friday night in a profusion of festivities. “It was a very good night,” membership and promotions manager Melissa Baharis said. “There were heaps of people there and we had the Chinese Lion Dance for good luck as well as live music. “Comments from the public were that the food was delicious,” Melissa said. “The dish (to have) is the Pho.” With a mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Thai among the few flavours of the world offered at the restaurant, the noodle bar’s meals are prepared by

MAT SUCKLING DIRECTOR OF RMS HOMES Ideally, I would have begun my first formal guide like this; the hows, whys, whats, wheres and whos of home buying! Considering the issues facing home buyers, I believe it pertinent to discuss some other topics which are affecting home buyers. Affordability. It is the enemy of first, second, and third home buyers. Most people across Melbourne are finding their money is getting them less than what it used to. In order to assist those struggling to save enough for deposits lobby groups, consumer groups and government representatives are considering possible solutions to the ‘affordability crisis’. I believe the responses from government are reactionary and not well thought through. To be honest, I think they will continue to heat an already boiling market. I will explain why they are not only ineffective, but also dangerous to the economy. Stamp duty – as of 1 July, all first home buyers, whether buying an established home or a house and land package (to the value of $600,000) will not have to pay stamp duty. Previously, first home buyers received a 50 per cent reduction. The excitement generated has led to some of our competitors using it as motivation in their latest marketing. Less stamp duty equals less upfront costs for a home buyer; that has to be good, right? I believe it will continue to drive up prices, especially land prices. The basic rules of economics are; - When supply is high – demand is low (in this case, prices go down).
- When supply is low – demand is high (in this case, prices go up). This stamp duty policy is going to encourage developers to raise land prices, not drop them, as demand for land is going to surge beyond its already ridiculous levels. Anyone who has been shopping for affordable land across Melbourne is finding it difficult, with most blocks having title dates of mid to late 2018! With wage growth not matching inflation, the issue of serviceability becomes an issue when land prices are increasing at the rate they are currently. What is the point of buying a block of land at X dollars, when you won’t be able to afford the house you want due to banks’ serviceability requirements! Home start finance initiatives (government sponsored lending programs) have been a successful option for low deposit home buyers in both South Australia and Western Australia. They provide people wanting to buy a home who have the capacity to service the repayments an opportunity to purchase via sharing an equity stake with the buyer. In order to be successful these programs rely heavily on the property value increasing, allowing the government sponsored program to recoup their monies at a profit when the home is sold. The buyer also pays a portion of their home loan repayment in interest to the government sponsored lender. I can hear many of you say “With the expenses I have, it is so hard to save a deposit. Mat, you are supposed to help us home buyers, why are you so negative when it comes to a program such as this?” There are two things we need to observe about Western Australia and South Australia. Both economies are in need of a kick start – unemployment in South Australia is high, and Western Australia is still recovering from the end of the mining boom. House prices in Western Australia have actually gone down in the past 18
months, leading it to become the most affordable state for first home buyers! The risk of the property market heating in these states is low – these initiatives stimulate the construction and development economy. We don’t have these issues in Melbourne. And like the stamp duty exemption, such a government incentivised program will only encourage developers to raise prices if more people are able to purchase property! The global financial crisis that started in America was caused by two things; 1. Government sponsored lending programs; and 2. Reckless bank policies which allowed low income earners with zero deposits to buy houses they couldn’t afford. The interference of government on financial policy creates more harm than good. It encourages developers to be greedy. Unfortunately, it is often that the underprivileged are misled and taken advantage of. Not everyone can afford mortgage repayments, whether it is due to existing credit circumstances or current work situation (part-time, casual or made redundant). There is a minimum standard that must be adhered to before a home buyer can be eligible to purchase a home. At RMS, we call it being financially fit. Via our numerous home buyer programs, we support all types of buyers from all types of circumstances get in a position where they become financially ‘fit’ to meet the demands of the lending requirements. So, after all that doom and gloom, do I have a solution to the affordability problem? 1. The first home owners grant and stamp duty concessions should be means tested. The degree to which buyers are eligible for these grants and concessions should be tested on a case by case basis. It is unfair and a waste of tax payer dollars for someone who already has a sizeable deposit (more than 10 per cent or has the
capacity via mum and dad) to receive the same concession as someone who has a five per cent deposit. 2. Place rules on developers pre-releasing land, and price cap land lots in greenfield land estates. Developers can’t pre-release stock quick enough to the market. Some estates are requiring depositors to register for ballots that may get them a block of land that is over 12 months away from title! Anyone lucky enough to receive a block avoids the dreaded ballot for the next stage, where usually prices will continue to rise only to live 50 metres down the road from the first release of land. This is driven by expression of interest and the amount of registered buyers. The scarcity of land availability driven by demand will only continue to drive prices up. If developers are required to release the bulk of their land within a certain timeframe when titles are due, we will see more stock on the market which will ideally give buyers freedom of choice. This freedom of choice will cool demand (as a result of a greater supply) and provide price relief for buyers looking for house and land packages. 3. Make building easier! Governments make it hard for developers to subdivide land, and for builders to build on land. The regulations and codes that must be followed and adhered to slow land releases and building approvals. It has never been harder to buy and build homes. The government (both local, state and federal) can incentivise buyers by making the development and building process easier – deregulate! This will allow quicker land releases, quicker building approvals, and less holding costs for both developers, builders and buyers. The only firms that get rich from lag times are government departments and banks!

Jobs aren’t connecting with kids By Casey Neill Jobs and unemployed youth aren’t matching up in Greater Dandenong. A SEBN Industry Breakfast at Highways in Springvale on Thursday 6 April looked at why. STREAT founder Rebecca Scott said young people wanted to feel like the organisation they worked for stood for something. “And young people trust their peers more than they trust authority,” she said. STREAT is a social enterprise that offers employment and training to youths in need, founded in 2009. Ms Scott has spent the past eight years working with young people fresh from juvenile detention, battling mental health and addiction issues, and sleeping rough. She urged businesses to link young employees with a mentor close to their age. She said today’s workers would have 13 different careers in their lifetime, but often returned to
an employer down the track. “Don’t underestimate instilling skills in the hope they’ll come back,” she said. Sajda Yakub is studying a bachelor of law, commerce and arts with a double major in sociology and journalism. Now in her fourth year, she started volunteering during her first with Amnesty International and Muslim Legal Network. Her long hours and dedication weren’t enough to open doors at legal firms. They all wanted experience but no one was willing to give her the chance to get it. She urged the businesspeople in the room to take volunteering into account when assessing an applicant’s experience. Ms Yakub also urged them to “reject gently” because self-doubt stuck, write job advertisements with young applicants in mind and offer buddy programs to guide younger workers. Entry level and part-time positions should be easier to access, she said. “We are raw and we want experienced mentors
to flesh out our passions,” she said. SEBN manager Sandra George said: “If Sajda has had that much difficulty getting a position, think about the people Rebecca’s working with and what they might go through.” In contrast, Hilton Manufacturing managing director Todd Hartley has 40 positions to fill and can’t find enough candidates. “We’re looking at 457 visas,” he said. “We’re just having so much trouble recruiting people.” The Dandenong South business will experience 30 per cent growth from 1 January to 1 July this year. Since taking over the business from his father in 2005, Mr Hartley has made a conscious effort to recruit young workers. He worked with Beacon Foundation and Chisholm to find promising teens and hired them in bulk “so they could hang out at smoko, have a good experience of going to work”. “We’ve tried to engage with the younger generation and change the perception of the manuYouth Enterprise Award nominee Nathan Taylor.
Taylor-made for mentoring kids from a young age By Casey Neill Nathan Taylor started mentoring kids when he was still a teen himself. He was the Youth Enterprise Nominee at the first Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards breakfast for the year, held at Sandhurst Golf Club on Wednesday 29 March. Chisholm sport and school partnerships manager Connor Mulan said Nathan, 23, started his studies at the TAFE last July with a Certificate IV in Youth Work. Mr Mullan said the student had a high level of commitment and a genuine desire to continue
learning. He said Nathan volunteered with the Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-operative while studying and had taken up a paid position since graduating. Nathan is now completing a diploma of youth work part-time at Chisholm. He said Chisholm had made working while studying easy. “I’m in my dream job at the moment, working in my own community,” he said. The Narre Warren resident believes the diploma will assist with this work. “Education’s going to be the main thing for
me,” he said. “I’d been in mentor and in leadership roles for kids since I was 14, 15. “I saw it as a way to give back to my community in the best way I knew how.” Nathan said his dad was the co-op’s chairperson and his nan was also on the board. “My family was one of the first establishing families,” he said. “I’ve been involved my whole life, so I wouldn’t want to leave.” The Youth Enterprise Award winner will be announced at an event in November.

He paired the teens with young staff who were two or three years into their roles as mentors, and rotated them through different departments to find their passion. “It’s not easy but we certainly need to do all we can to engage with young people,” Mr Hartley said. “If we don’t engage with them over the next 10 years or so I see us falling behind purely because of the tech savvy involved in operating our equipment.”
Helpful youth placements Welcoming a student into the workplace could help a business in more ways than one. Lesley Hodge from South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) spoke about the structured workplace learning program at a SEBN Industry Breakfast at Highways in Springvale on Thursday 6 April. “It’s not a huge commitment but it can be the difference between a student gaining future employment and promoting your industry as a career path,” she said. SEBN manager Sandra George said the students could help businesses to learn how to engage with young workers. Structured workplace learning (SWL) is on-the-job training that allows students to develop their work skills and understand employer expectations. Like work experience, it gives them exposure to the real world of work. But it’s available to Victorian school students in the Vocational Education Training (VET) program as part of their VCE or VCAL studies. Employers can interview students prior to offering them placement and can negotiate hours. Students should be given tasks that are safe, interesting and give them an understanding of the business and industry area. Businesses can promote the attitudes and skills they want in their workforce, identify young people with potential for their industry and increase supervisory, training and mentoring skills. Melba sessions on disability insurance take the focus By Casey Neill Melba Support Services has set up in the heart of Dandenong. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a major focus for the not-for-profit, which has opened its doors on Walker Street. Innovation and development manager David Glazebrook said Melba would be running NDIS sessions to explain the program and its impacts. “It’s an evolving landscape,” he said. “We’ve been involved with it since last year. “Because we’re actively involved with it, we know a reasonable amount about it. “A lone person or family won’t have the awareness. “The joy of the NDIS, it’s about the people with the disability going ‘this is what I want’. “We’ve got families that we support now at one level going ‘I’m looking forward to this’, but pan-
icking because they don’t understand it. “We’re just keen to engage with people and talk to people.” On 6 December last year, Melba was one of five businesses to receive a Greater Dandenong Business Grant at Dandenong Civic Centre. The grant included up to $8000 plus business mentoring and marketing valued at about $2000. Mr Glazebrook said Melba’s cash went towards shopfront signage, rent and a website redesign. “We’re putting in a language translator,” he said. “We hope it will be online at the end of April. “We need to reengage with some of these communities. “We need to find out what their needs are with disability, and we have to provide the appropriate support.” He’s no stranger to Dandenong. Mr Glazebrook managed the Visy Cares Centre
for young people in Clow Street, now home to the Greater Dandenong Council’s youth services team. “I also used to run Impact Support Services. We were a disability agency in the southern region,” he said. “We were based in Oakleigh.” They sought someone to merge with in 2010, and finalised a deal with Melba on 1 July 2015. “Someone bought the office in Oakleigh, so we had to move,” he said. “We based ourselves in Lilydale.” Mr Glazebook said Melba’s expertise was with complex disabilities. “They’re the people we want to look after into the future,” he said. “Some of the people we’re involved with we have 24-7 involvement. “They need that level of care.” He said his team - which was four part-timers strong and growing - could do a lot over the

Festival grounded in harmony Harmony Square hosted a free festival designed to unite young people and kick-start positive change. Grounded Festival brought performances and activities to Dandenong on Saturday 25 March. Festival-goers got involved with henna art, face-painting, hair braiding and an AFL skills tent. There were performances from hip hop collective Gremlns, singer songwriter Thando, Man Made Mountain, Malesh P and Deng Tebir, and spoken word artists Soreti and Abe Nouk. Last year’s Miss South Sudan Australia winner Anyuop Dau curated a fashion parade and there was an Aboriginal welcome to country and a Maori Te Hononga O Nga Iwi. The Grounded Project represents diverse young people in Melbourne’s west and southeastern suburbs. The idea behind it is to unite youth through grassroots culture and pursue positive social change for the community. Thirty people from Grounded at a Gua Performance and Leadership camp at Wilson’s Prom National Park in January organised the festival and partnered with South Sudanese Australia Youth United. Organisers also participated in two Harmony Day performances in the lead-up to the event, at Dandenong High School and Keysborough College. The Grounded Project focuses on the commonalities of individuals while celebrating and respecting differences. Its vision is to educate young people about the importance of cultural history and identity, the joy of being creative and focused, and the empowerment of connecting as a community. It aims to promote mutual respect, openmindedness and social equality to reduce violence, substance abuse, and discrimination. Grounded challenges social and institutional racism and prejudice in Australia and brings diverse people together to build strong relationships through music and performing arts.

Stepping up to proudly represent his country By Nicholas Creely Yash Pednekar is one of the most talented young cricketers in the country, and will be a name likely to be synonymous with cricket for a long time. The 15-year-old leg-spinning all-rounder has from a young age been seen as a bright star in a cricket-rich region of the south-east, featuring in several DDCA representative teams. But just last week, Yash was selected in the Australian under 16s as one of two Victorians who will proudly represent their country on the national stage. The humble star told the Journal that it came down to hard work and a genuine love for the game. “It does mean a lot - I work very hard and I guess it’s paid off, which is great,” he said. “I train very hard and I’ve done well at the championships, which is pleasing.” It has been a hugely productive few years for
Pednekar - playing with his local club North Dandenong he has scored three centuries in the Under 17s as well as making his Turf 1 debut the year prior. In fact, in his 102 game career at the Maroons to date, he averages an impressive 32.09 with the bat and 20 with the ball, staggering numbers for a kid that is still playing junior cricket. His exciting talents have brought him into Monash Tigers, the Victorian Premier Cricket club where he is likely to be playing next season, and was not out of his depth in the toughest competition in the state. “I am looking to play a lot of Premier Cricket this season - it was a great experience this year,” he said. “Just to see how they train is just amazing; I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to do it again.” But it was in the SSA 15 and Under National Championships last month that Pednekar brought his name into the national selectors’ minds, including that of former legend Greg Chappell.
In the championships in Brisbane, the youngster made 49 and 42, and also snared an impressive 4/28 against Vic Country. And if he can be as good as his idol, look out! “I loved watching Sachin Tendulkar - it was just his character and how humble he is - I would love to be a person like him, but also to be able to play like him,” he said. Pednekar will now have to wait until September of this year to play for Australia, where will he form part of the Cricket Australia XI at the Under 17 National Championships in Brisbane, a team coached by former Australian quick Ryan Harris. And only a few months later, he will be part of an exciting six-match series against Pakistan, with the dates and locations still to be decided. He is excited and knows it is a great opportunity to show what he is made of. “I can’t wait - following the traditional pathway of so many successful cricketers is great - seeing where I can potentially go is very exciting,” he said.
Oscar Clavarino has joined a select few of impressive names on the honour board at Shepley Oval. The highly-touted Dandenong Stingray and former Berwick junior could just be the most sought-after key defender in the country come draft time in November, but possesses a quality that is even more important to clubs - genuine leadership. The 17-year-old, who is now the Dandenong Stingrays co-captain alongside fellow teammate Josh Bateman, joins names such as Matt Buntine, Luke Parker, Tom Scully, Ryan Bastinac and Jack Lonie as captain, with those players all going on to forge elite careers in the AFL. Seen as an accountable, reliable and elite one-on-one defender, Clavarino is looking forward to the chance to lead by example on and off-field, and concedes that leadership is something he has always aspired to. “It’s an absolute honour to be selected by my teammates to lead the team alongside my co-captain Josh Bateman,” he said. “It gives me a great sense of respect from my peers given that they have allowed me the opportunity to put my best foot forward in, hopefully, being able to lead the team. “I’ve always looked to be an on-field leader ever since I was young - in my younger years I had the opportunity to captain my local footy team, Berwick, for four years, which gave me the experience and the knowledge of the expectations of a leader. “It gave me the view on what it takes to be a leader and the selfless nature that it taught me was priceless - I’m hoping to be a captain that my teammates can rely on to set high standards both on and off the field and enforce these standards upon the squad. “I think it’s important as well to be a captain who doesn’t set themselves apart from others in regards to importance and can be held accountable for my actions by the team.” Clavarino has already had a taste of life at the elite level with the AFL Academy, spending time with an AFL player and learning the professionalism needed to advance to that level. “I was lucky enough to spend two weeks staying with Jack Viney and training at the Melbourne Football Club as part of the Academy’s AFL experience,” he said. “While learning so much at the club, staying with Jack was an unreal insight into the life of an AFL footballer.”
Digitally interrupted football record the latest victim By David Nagel Not even the humble and much-loved footy record has survived the technological tsunami sweeping the world after the South East Football Netball League’s decision to go digital in 2017. Supporters of all nine clubs in SEFNL were left bemused on Saturday as gatekeepers gave a blank look to their request for a staple of Australian Rules football since 1912. Supporters who have contacted Star News Group said they had no idea the change was being implemented and were confused watching the Round 1 fixture, with new players in new jumper numbers at each club hard to distinguish. According to SEFNL Leagues Manager Liz Triffitt, the change was brought about after all club presidents were surveyed about the future of the booklet. to the clubs on Friday, with the clubs responsible for printing their own versions prior to the Saturday fixture. The footy record is also available via the TeamApp smartphone app. “We surveyed the clubs and the general consensus came back that printing the records was a waste of time and money,” Triffitt said. “Obviously there was concern for the die-hard supporter, but clubs were throwing half of their allocation into the bin so it was decided to trial a digital record this season. It’s up to the clubs now to print off the team lists after they’ve been sent to them on Fridays.” Triffitt agreed that communicating the change could have been handled better, but said there were positives to come from the move. “We’ve had 3000 views on-line and the clubs now have the opportunity to create links to their websites, to an event they may be hosting, and
even links to their sponsors,” she said. Club presidents were mixed with their views, one describing the change to digital as the “worst decision he had ever seen,” while another said “the inconvenience was bigger than he thought.” One club president said his club had definitely not agreed to the change to digital and would only have done so if the on-line version was run in conjunction with a hard copy. “And we’re still getting charged for a record they’re not producing anymore,” the president said. Another said he was not fussed by the changes and it was just another sign of the times. Most agreed that printing the digital version would add costs to their clubs and would put further pressure on the volunteers who support their club.

Switched-on Machine plugs in to draft hopes By Russell Bennett Perry Lewis-Smith is a machine - one fuelled by doubters, people who’ve knocked him back, or who’ve said no. The 18-year-old Casey Demons utility is as strong under the packs with his clean hands as he is on the outside with his relentless run and carry and sublime foot skills. But he’ll never be the one to say that - he’s too modest and unassuming. Just don’t mistake that for a lack of self-belief. He’s as self-driven as any prodigious young footballer his age. Lewis-Smith’s nickname is ‘The Machine’ for very good reason. He’s won 10 best and fairest category awards as a junior player - three of them league awards. He captained the Parkmore Under 17s to a South East Juniors premiership in 2015, gathering 44 disposals through the midfield and winning the best on ground medal in the grand final. He then moved on to the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup last year, where he played as an attacking half-back. He was constantly in the club’s top five players for key performance indicators, and kept his direct opponents goalless throughout the season. Lewis-Smith had the highest registered and recorded beep test - 15.7 - out of all TAC Cup players competing in the 2016 combines, where they be Rookie Me, the Victorian state, or National combines and also recorded a 15.9 at TAC Cup testing day. When he wasn’t playing at Sandringham last year, he ventured down to play seniors at Dingley in the SFL under Shane Morwood. Despite being just 17 at the time, Lewis-Smith fell just one vote short of the winning the Dingoes’ best and fairest ... in only seven games played. In his limited appearances for the Dingoes, he stole the show with two 40-disposal games and a 30-touch effort while also booting 12 goals during one month of domination. After signing at Casey, he recorded the best time in the three kilometre time trial - 9.42 - and shone in his pre-season debut against the Central Australian Redtails from the Northern Territory. He then followed that up another two outstanding displays - the first against Port Melbourne at Casey. Lewis-Smith has also won various Victorian state track and field cross country championships, including finishing a close second in the steeplechase despite never having run the discipline before. He had to earn his spot on the Casey list for 2017, and he knows he’ll have to earn his debut in their seniors. Former Collingwood premiership team-mates Morwood and Mick Gayfer are two of LewisSmith’s mentors, and he’s also got a particularly strong relationship with Casey VFL coach Justin Plapp. “He’s really supportive, he’s a great teacher, and he’s a great coach,” Lewis-Smith said. “He really works to your strengths, he’s a great communicator and one of the best coaches I’ve ever had.”

and let my footy do my talking for me.” Highly composed under pressure, poised, and with strong instincts - the footy ground is LewisSmith’s office, and he can’t wait to knuckle down and get to work whenever he can. “I want to just keep playing consistent footy week in, week out and hopefully work my way up into the ones and if I play good footy there, to get drafted,” he said. “That’s been the goal for so long. “I think I’m good enough to get drafted, and the window is still open.”
Wins a vote for her future Suffragette set the time standard in Thursday 6 April’s group 2 Launching Pad semifinals by leading all of the way in a sensational 29.35 - and connections expect her to improve further again. Suffragette won on her Sandown Park debut on New Year’s Day but hadn’t won again until the week prior to the Launching Pad series. As well as being the fastest semi-final winner, Suffragette also recorded the best first split of the night, leading TAB to install her as the $2.70 early favourite to claim the $150,000 winner’s cheque despite drawing box 6 for the final. Earlier in the night, Shantui caused an upset when he came from last on leaving the straight for the first time to sweep around his rivals and score in 29.72. Glen’s name up in white for senior team recruiters By Nicholas Creely Entering his first season as a bona-fide VFL player with the Casey Demons, 19-year-old Tommy Glen is looking to break into the senior side and put his name up on the whiteboards of AFL recruiters once again. The former Dandenong Stingray is making great strides down at Casey Fields after getting a taste of VFL football in 2016, and is looking forward to testing his mettle against some of Victoria’s most seasoned footballers. “I have really enjoyed it (pre-season), obviously it’s a bit of a step up in intensity and a bit more demanding in regards to time, but I was fortunate enough to do half of the pre-season last year at the club while still playing at Dandenong, which held me in good stead in terms of what to expect,” he said. “The obvious goal is to play just the one game
but I think at least five senior games is achievable and reasonable. “I’m just trying to listen and learn as much as possible and get something out of each time I walk into the club. “The club has given me plenty and I will do everything I can to repay the club.” The slick-moving footballer’s greatest asset is his versatility and natural athleticism, something he believes is suited to the VFL competition and will ensure he is not out of place if given an opportunity to show off his wares. “My best position at VFL level is probably across half-back or the wing, that’s where I can use my strengths to the teams’ advantage, but it’s also important that I’m flexible and able to adapt to whatever is thrown my way,” he explained. “Last year at Dandenong we had a plan to play me as an inside midfielder, to try and grow my game and give me the best opportunity to go to
the next level - being a bit skinnier than most guys at VFL level who are a bit older and more mature, I’ve moved back to a role where I can use my skills and athleticism.” The Demons were highly successful last year in moulding their VFL players into AFL prospects, with three 2016 players, Declan Keilty (Melbourne), Tim Smith (Melbourne) and Oscar McInerney (Brisbane) all finding their way onto AFL lists in 2017. Glen said that the club clearly has the capacity to produce AFL players, something he can use as motivation to achieve his dream. “That’s the ultimate goal - the club is in a good position and I think there is a quite a clear pathway that the club has presented to all the boys with the opportunities that arose for the guys who got drafted from the club last season,” he said.

In what was a bit of a Jekyl and Hyde game for the Rays, a quick-start proved crucial and highlighted the amount of talent embedded on their list. With last week’s embarrassing drubbing on their minds, the Rays played like a team possessed early, running all over a shell-shocked Rebels side, jumping to a 41-point lead at quarter-time. The Burra were hot in the early exchanges, doing all the damage early with three goals courtesy of Jacob Bakes, Chris Bryan and Ryan Goodes. But they could only muster up another 26-points in three-quarters, with the slicker Demons utilizing their momentum and taking the game away after half-time. With scores level at three-quarter time, the Demons kicked five unanswered goals to run away with an impressive victory. MOTORING Little Mazda gets better By Ewan Kennedy Mazda CX-5 has been a hit in Australia from day one when it arrived here just over five years ago in February 2012. Now the second generation has been introduced. And the relentless series of improvements that drive the Japanese marque mean it exceeds the original in just about every area. The new CX-5 features a smoothing out of the original shape, almost to the extent of being minimalistic in its lines. It works exceptionally well to our eyes. At a time when many marques’ stylists are coming up with over complex details, Mazda might be leading the field in the next generation of automotive bodies. The CX-5’s grille is familiar, but different, and ties in with the lower areas. The doors have neat sculpting in their lower areas and the C-pillar treatment is interesting. If there’s one thing we aren’t keen on it’s the rather small rear lights. Inside, the central screen is a good size, the instruments are sporty in their layout and the dash sits quite a long way forward to give the visual appearance of added space. A new model has been added to the already comprehensive CX-5 range. Called the Touring, it sits between the Maxx Sport and GT. Potential buyers really are spoiled for choice as Mazda Australia is very keen to further increase its sales from the 115,000 that have hit Australia’s roads to date. There’s comfortable seating inside for four adults, with a fifth being possible without too much hip and shoulder rubbing. However, it’s very much a 40:20:40 layout and may not suit all. angles to let those back there assume their preferred position, as well as to juggle luggage and passenger space. Large armrests are a feature we really liked in the front. Boot space, at 442 litres, is good and easy to load, with a spacesaver being used to give added depth. Infotainment from the Mazda MZD Connect system via a 7.0-inch touchscreen includes AM and FM, as well as DAB+ radio. There’s Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio, Aux, and USB. Control is through steering wheel buttons for many functions, there’s also Mazda’s handy Comander rotary controller. Satellite navigation is optional on the CX-5 Maxx but standard on all other variants. Power comes from a range of engines, all using Mazda’s SkyActiv technology. Although based on the powerplants of the out-
going CX-5, they have significant improvements. The 2.2-litre turbo-diesel puts out up to 129 kW of power, with 420 Nm of torque at 2000 revs. The 2.0 petrol has 114 kW, and 200 Nm at a highish 4000 rpm. Note that Mazda Australia has again specified the engines be detuned slightly to suit Australia’s low-grade 91 octane standard petrol. Finally, there’s a 2.5-litre petrol producing 140 kW, and 251 Nm, again at 4000 rpm. A six-speed manual is on offer with the smaller petrol engine, all others have a six-speed automatic transmission and this unit is also mated to the 2.0-litre petrol when requested.. Our initial two days of test driving arranged by Mazda for the new CX-5’s launch took place in a complex route from the Gold Coast, inland through the hinterland and out to Beaudesert, finishing up in heavy-duty peak-hour traffic in Brisbane.

Next day it was a trip north through outer suburban areas, then to Brisbane airport along the coast road, with the highlight being Redcliffe. Yes, that’s varied and realistic. We tried both the larger petrol and the turbo-diesel engine. The petrol was our preferred unit as its smooth, quiet and reacts fast to throttle inputs. While the turbo-diesel is quieter than average for its class it’s still audible from the outside, and has more turbo lag than we like. The automatic is quick to sense driver demands and road conditions and shift to lower ratios when required. The new Mazda medium-large SUV is spacious, quiet and comfortable to ride in and able to cushion occupants from the rough ‘n’ ready backroads. Though this isn’t classed as a sporty machine we did find the steering and handling to be softer than we like. And there’s not a lot of feedback through the wheel. Again, try for yourself as part of the prepurchase test drive. New Mazda CX-5 will sell on style alone and while it’s marginally more expensive than the superseded model we feel it still provides excellent value.
