Casey has been confirmed the home-invasion capital of Victoria for 2016, according to official crime statistics. But Victoria Police, emboldened by a dent in crime rates in recent months, say “the worst is behind us“. In 2016, there were 370 aggravated burglaries in Casey - more than one a day and comfortably the highest of any municipality in Melbourne - according to statistics reported on Nine News. It was nearly double the total of 199 aggravated burglaries in 2015. Acting Superintendent Simon Humphrey, who oversees Victoria Police southeast region, said police had been “working harder than ever” in arresting twice as many home-invasion offenders in 2016 compared to 2014. “Over the last four or five months, overall crime rates have been reducing, and while we acknowledge we still have a lot of work to do, we feel that the worst is behind us.” Act Supt Humphrey said the “predominantly youth networked” offenders responsible for most of the home invasions were being targeted by the police’s Southern Metro Regional Crime Team. More of those arrested were also being remanded in custody, Acting Supt Humphrey said. The Southern Metro Regional Crime Team undertook “proactive policing in high risk areas” and “managing persons of interest” as well as working with counterparts in other regions of Melbourne. “We aren’t just trying to react to the crime when it occurs - we have a range of initiatives underway to try and get on top of it before it occurs. “Outside of policing the problem, we are engaging with the community and stakeholders on what we can do to stop these young people offending in the first place.” In the latest police figures, assaults - up 21 per cent, burglaries - up 32 per cent, and thefts - up 18 per cent - soared significantly in 2016.

Acting Supt Humphrey said the police’s “pro-active burglary investigation teams” operated in areas of known burglaries, but still many occurred due to home’s doors and windows being left unlocked. The exploding crime rate was also partly attributed to Casey’s soaring population. “Areas that were open paddocks just a few years ago are now full of houses and as the population increases unfortunately so does the opportunity for crimes to be committed.” Acting Supt Humphrey said there was no update on extra police numbers in Casey, as part of the State Government’s pledged 2729 more police over four years. Andrew Hartley and his family were sleeping as a group of burglars intruded and took his wife’s car keys and handbag from their Berwick home in August. Weeks later, he organised a 400-strong public forum on the home-invasion spate, with tips on home security. “Short of the laws changing, I don’t know how to stop it,” Mr Hartley said. “These kids get away with too much, even though the police do what they can.” The traumatised family have since moved to a “quiet street - at the end of a court and up a hill”. Rick Maaskant, who was stabbed with a pitchfork by intruders in his Hampton Park home in March, says the current law-andorder approach isn’t working. He has been burgled six times, had five cars, his wallet and TV remote stolen. “If you can’t do anything about it after six burglaries, what makes you think you’d be safe after eight or 20? “It’s a vicious cycle. They go to jail for three months, spend time with their mates and have a whale of a time. “Then they get out and it all starts again.” His solution is to fly out offenders and “drop them in the ocean”. “They could have easily killed me. They could have killed a lot of people. They steal cars and burn cars. “They have no respect for any of us. Why should we be so respectful of them?”

Brenda’s bucket list: one last trip By Cam Lucadou-Wells Brenda Smyth is hoping for one last ‘trip of a lifetime’. In a race against time, the terminally-ill Narre Warren South resident and her daughters are frantically crowd-funding to retrace a memorable family holiday they shared in the US many years ago. “It would mean everything to go with my girls on one last trip,” Ms Smyth said as she hugged her pet, and close companion, Gavin. But sadly their window is tight. Ms Smyth faces a short and very painful battle after a shock cancer diagnosis on 18 March. She was given a prognosis of between four to six months and no hope of treatment for the aggressive cancer that had spread to her liver, bones and lungs. There is perhaps just weeks to enjoy a hastily-organised holiday before Ms Smyth will be too sick to travel. The trip is a brainchild and parting gift from Ms Smyth’s dear daughters Sheree and Selina. It’s something for the grieving family to look forward to, Sheree says. “We had planned to go back towards the end of the year, but with everything that’s happened, we can’t go then. “We don’t have the funds to go as soon as possible. It’s one of the things that Mum was most upset about.” The proposed itinerary is much the same as their holiday in California in 2014.

The three women would head back to Disneyland - where the girls and mum had hammed it up in Halloween hats and trick-or-treated on their last trip. “We’d like to go back to Disneyland, take photos with the characters and do this child-like fantasy stuff,” Sheree said. “It’ll be something other than pain and illness.” Another stop would be Ms Smyth’s favourite trinket shop Bonanzas in Las Vegas. And high on the bucket list is Venice Beach and its markets - which was unfortunately skipped on the last trip. There’s the chance to re-sample American snack-food Cheetos Puffs, and to catch up with a friend Ms Smyth met on the last trip - ‘Moochie’ in San Francisco. It will be a reminder of happier days, says daughter Sheree. Such as when the neighbourhood kids would run through the kitchen to grab Ms Smyth’s freshly-baked butterfly cakes and eclairs. The family hopes to raise $10,000 on its GoFundMe campaign page to cover flights, car hire, Disneyland and two weeks’ accommodation. Rowe’s back on council Former Casey councillor Gary Rowe has been reinstated to the role after a countback of votes following the shock resignation of councillor Steve Beardon last month. The countback of votes from the 2016 general election of Victorian councillors that re-elected Mr Rowe was conducted on Monday 3 April in the Casey council chambers. Gary Rowe was the last candidate to be ousted behind Cr Beardon in October 2016 when the latter obtained just 92 more votes than Mr Rowe on the 30th vote count. Cr Beardon tendered his resignation to Casey council CEO Mike Tyler on 8 March 2017 after an investigation was launched into an alleged argument between him and another councillor following a council meeting. Mr Rowe said he was taken by surprise when he received the call from Casey mayor Sam Aziz just after 10.30am on Monday 3 April that he had been re-elected councillor. “I’m not sure how I’m feeling to be honest,” he said.

“I stood for election in October, and had I been elected back then it would have been business as usual, but six months without local politics I’ve had a bit more time to think about it.” “I said in the beginning, when Cr Beardon resigned, that I wasn’t sure but I’m certainly not considering rejecting it.” Mr Rowe is expected to be sworn in as councillor before the council meeting commences on Tuesday 4 April, but Mr Rowe is unsure he will be able to make it. “I definitely want to be there tomorrow night to be sworn in, but that will depend,” he said “With less than 24 hours’ notice it makes it difficult; this is not something I planned for on Friday.” Mr Rowe said he was looking forward to picking up where he left off when he lost his seat to Mr Beardon last year. “There is a lot of unfinished business that has been dropped,” he said. “For example, the speed limit in High Street Cranbourne is a project I had been working on for quite some time, and was trying to get some State

Government funding for it.” “It made me very angry to see VicRoads putting skirts on pedestrian crossings when they could have been spending that money lowering the speed limit and making Cranbourne safer.” Mr Rowe said these kinds of infrastructure projects would be a big focus for his return to council. “The problem with our community is a lack of infrastructure, and it’s something that needs to be addressed,” he said. “As a whole, governments need to address and deliver funding of infrastructure when putting 40,000 new properties in Casey.” Mr Rowe said he wanted to focus on improving the accessibility and public amenities in the municipality. “The roads already don’t cope,” he said. “We have to deliver major road projects and public transport like the extension of the train rail to Clyde and Cranbourne East.” While Mr Rowe will return to his previous position as councillor following the abrupt end to Mr Beardon’s po-

litical career, he said this won’t change how he operated as a councillor. Cr Aziz said the rest of the members of Casey Council were looking forward to working with Mr Rowe again. “Gary Rowe was instrumental in setting Casey on its new and exciting direction during his last term, and I’m thrilled to be able to work with him again,” he said. “With Gary as a member, the last council oversaw a modernisation of the way council serves its community, which continues today,” he said. “It’s pleasing that now eight of those 11 councillors will be able to continue that work to deliver the best possible services and value for our customers.” Mr Rowe said he was aware his return to Casey council was unorthodox, but he said he held no ill will to a man who ousted him in the 2016 election. “I wish Mr Beardon all the best, and I understand he had to make a difficult decision,” he said. “These are personal life decisions people have to make, and in public life it doesn’t happen that often; I hope he achieves everything he wants to.”

Police and emergency services were called to the South Gippsland Highway near Station Street in Cranbourne after a pedestrian was hit by a car on Saturday 1 April. It is believed the 62-year-old man from Frankston South was crossing the road shortly before 9pm when he was struck by a vehicle. Emergency services were called to the scene, and the pedestrian was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries. The 42-year-old Cranbourne man who was at the wheel and five-year-old passenger were not injured. The driver assisted police with inquiries. Witnesses or anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Casey mayor Sam Aziz says he’ll make “no apologies” for City of Casey’s ‘economic partnership’ delegation which has flown out for a week’s tour of China. Cr Aziz, Cr Wayne Smith and two council officers flew out for their trip to Sichuan province and Shanghai on 4 April. They are expected to return to Melbourne on 11 April. Footy options for mums The Lynbrook Football Netball Club is reaching out for community support to ensure their senior women’s team has the best chance of success in the Southern Football Netball League 2017 season. The club is running a crowdfunding campaign through the Australian Sports Foundation to cover the cost of babysitting services, so women with kids in the community have the best opportunity to play footy. The club has started implementing this plan already, and it has been a great benefit to the women on the team, but it needs community support to keep it going. Kelly Baker plays for the Lyndhurst Lightening and has three kids; twins aged seven and a 13-year-old. She is playing Aussie Rules for the first time this season, and said she was “absolutely loving it.” “It’s new, exciting, fresh, and keeps giving me great new things.” “I have always played other sports, but adding the element of tackling is really exciting; it gets the frustration out like nothing else.” She said having the childcare option had freed her up to really focus on playing the best footy she can. “Juggling kids can be an issue,” she said. “My kids are very active and they would be getting up to all kinds of trouble with no one to watch them, and I can focus on playing, not worrying about what they were doing.” Ms Baker’s husband works late nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays when she is at training and plays football himself on the weekend, but for a different club. while their mums and carers played the game. “We will have someone in place so the women can come to training and game day with the kids if they want, and we will have someone in place to make sure kids are cared for and looked after,” he said. “We’ll have the childcare worker there after game and after training, so if the women want to socialise that person will still be in place to look after the kids, so our women’s team can play footy and be part of the club culture.” Ms Baker said she hoped other clubs in the region followed the lead of Lyndhurst and implemented a similar system to give all women access to the sport. “As a parent and mother, you feel that you are the number one carer in most cases, and you feel like you are locked in the house with young kids sometimes,” she said. “If more clubs offered this, it would bring a lot of girls out, especially ladies who had babies in their early twenties, who want to get out some frustration.” Ms Baker urged everyone in the community to support the club’s fundraising efforts because being able to play in her team meant a lot to her and the other women on her side. “Lyndhurst is a great club, and they have provided me, as a new player, immense support,” she said. “Especially being a parent and allowing us to just to fit in; it can be a boys’ club and sometimes you can be segregated in the footy world, but Lyndhurst has been very accommodating a lot of new girls.” To add your donation and support, the Lyndhurst FNC support women’s sport, head to the Australian Sport Foundation website and search for Lyndhurst or follow this link http://bit. ly/2oXUq2b. 12342286-HM12-17

Police seek two men Letters Police are on the lookout for two men who frequent the Cranbourne and Narre Warren areas. Jacob Cooper, 21, is known to frequent the Narre Warren area and is wanted by police for possession of a controlled weapon during June 2016. There are currently six warrants issues by the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for his arrest. Cooper is described as 178cm tall with a thin build, brown eyes, black hair and an olive complexion. Damian Brooks, 42, is known to frequent the Cranbourne area and is wanted by police for obtaining property by deception during May 2013. On 29 March, the Cranbourne Berwick News Facebook page published a story about a woman who had cancelled going into work in the Melbourne CBD because she could not find a car space at the Berwick train station. A situation familiar to many of our readers, here is how you shared in the frustration of trying to find a park in the busy streets and car parks of Casey: Leanne Boots: I live near a school and a park. It’s the same. You can’t get in and out of your own drive way to go for an appointment, you either have to leave early or you have to park on the street. It’s disgusting and parents don’t even care. I am sure when I had children at school I never parked were I shouldn’t have. Parents have no respect. Dieter Koch: And Metro are telling us that they are increasing services to enable more patrons to travel. There are no car parks for this and the bus services in the area are terrible as it’s all affected by the ridiculous amount of traffic. Tony O’Hara: Berwick is just one of many with this problem. When dropping grandkids at school, I have noticed the parked cars extending further and further away from the station. The State government should look at overthe-top of the rail or multi-storey parking. The sale of released land would almost certainly pay for it. Sue Baldizoni: Terrible state of affairs! Same issue with all the local schools! They build schools right smack in the middle of an estate with no provision for designated marked parking! I quite often can’t move in or out of my home at school time, people scrambling to get a park, blocking driveways, parking on nature strips, small streets all congested! Poor poor planning! Berwick is in gridlock in every direction at school times! Ali Uding: Yes I too am in the same situation and I have to get to the station earlier but can’t due to childcare. I also panic that I won’t get a park and can’t get to work. It’s unacceptable and something needs to be done about this issue urgently. There needs to be

more local jobs so we are not all commuting to the city. Rhiannon Dempster: I park there every day during the week and get a park up until 7.10am. I’ve never had to park in the street. There is always parks on the platform 2 side which is being spoken about here. The other side is a bit of a different story. Aleksandra Samardzic: It’s not only Berwick. Being a daily commuter (Dandenong - South Melb), I too have been fined a lot for not parking in the ’bays’. Now the issue is another 10-30 cars could fit if they repainted the bays. would always be late causing me to miss my trains and trams. I was then forced to catch a 6.25am bus meaning I was ALWAYS way to early at work. Now that I drive, I still have to leave my house at 7.15am and still can’t find parking and still suffer a whole journey standing in a crowded train (still beats paying $40 a day on parking + toll and petrol). One day as PT officers were fining me I asked them what was a solution to avoid this. They couldn’t provide a practical solution and it was ’my fault’. Maybe building multiple level parking at bigger stations (eg - Berwick, Dandenong, Springvale, Oakleigh) to ease pressure on other stations? Or just let people be!

Help avoid a cat-astrophe looking for a forever home. Adoption fees for cats older than four months are usually $120 and the normal adoption fees for kittens are $195. During the “CatPacity” adoption promotion, fees for cats will be reduced to $39 and kittens will be available to adopt for $99. RSPCA Victoria Chief Executive Officer Dr Liz Walker said the number of cats in shelters across the state had increased drastically. “We have so many cats coming through our doors and even more already awaiting adop-

tion,” she said. “This is all about finding forever homes for these gorgeous animals and giving people that extra incentive to adopt, instead of shopping online or buying from a backyard breeder.” RSPCA Victoria cares for around 10,400 cats each year, with numbers peaking as a result of “kitten season” - the breeding season typically between spring and summer. Each cat has been desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and had veterinary checks, and the same time and effort will go into matching each animal to the right family.

There were many reasons to celebrate at the Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre on Thursday 30 March. The centre officially marked the opening of the $1.15 million expansion to the building as well as celebrated 25 years of community learning and engagement. As the community of Cranbourne North has grown over the years, the community centre is in need of the upgrade to meet the ever- expanding needs of the residents. The upgrade has new counselling suites, a modernised external facade, a new reception

area and administration space, an upgraded commercial kitchen, additional bathroom amenities including an ambulant disabled bathroom with shower and upgrades to the main hall and children’s rooms. “MPLCC is one of Casey’s busiest community facilities,” Casey mayor Sam Aziz said. “More than 1000 Casey residents visit the centre each week to participate in adult and youth education programs, access the childcare programs or make a booking with the centre’s counselling services.” “Council recognises the importance of providing community, sporting and educational

facilities for our residents and the positive contribution facilities like MPLCC make to the well-being of individuals and ultimately of the whole community.” The Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre caters for adult and VCAL education as well as short courses and meeting spaces for community groups. “We’re proud to deliver a range of improvements for all those who access this highly valued facility, and the team at MPLCC are excited to be able to deliver new and innovative programs for the local community,” Cr Aziz said.

Paws for school holiday fun Springvale and Cranbourne will host Greyhound Holiday Fun Days this school holidays. Keysborough MP and Racing Minister Martin Pakula announced a joint funding package of more than $126,000 to support the free family fun program at 10 venues across the state on Monday 3 April. Greyhound Racing Victoria will host the events, including one at Sandown on Thursday 13 April and Cranbourne on Wednesday 12 April. There’ll be big-screen interactive video games, face painting, karaoke, sporting activities and four-legged friends from the Greyhound Adoption Program. Greyhound Racing Victoria mascot Turbo will also make a special appearance. Turbo-themed activities will include a jumping castle, inflatable slide, activity bags and photo opportunities. Greyhound Holiday Fun Days entry is free and kids will receive a complimentary

Luke a big loser for daughter By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne locals have no doubt spotted a familiar face in the newest season of the popular reality TV series The Biggest Loser. Luke King, the sales and sponsorship manager for the Cranbourne turf club, decided to become a contestant on the show to be a better role model for his two-year-old daughter. “I think that any child deserves a parent that is healthy and active,” he said. “It is always in the back of my mind knowing she is an active toddler it’s important for me to get my act into gear and be best healthy role model I can possibly be.” Weight loss and the lifestyle change necessary to achieve these kinds of goals are usually a very personal journey and Mr King said it was not a light decision to share his story on television. “It was a bit of a tough decision to do it in any case, let alone in front of the nation,” he said. “I had been training for a long time but had not seen any kind of results so my trainer, ex-Commonwealth boxer Julian Holland put it in my head I needed a total life change.” “I saw an ad for The Biggest Loser and decided it was time for change and to make the improvement I wanted to see and that I have been working towards for 10 or 15 years.” Although the program has only just start-

ed on TV, Mr King said the experience so far had been very rewarding. “I found the whole experience really worthwhile,” he said. “It’s a really tough slog but up to this stage I have officially lost 6.8 and 3.3 kilograms in the two weigh-ins.” Before starting his journey with The Biggest Loser, Mr King said it would have taken him a lot longer to lose that much weight. “To have lost that amount of weight beforehand could have taken me up to a year at one point.” “It’s been amazing to see that sort of result and my improved fitness and leaning key things like diet is a great thing for me.” While Mr King said he loved the experience of being on The Biggest Loser, he had a long way to go to reach his goal of getting back to his sporting-fit weight. “At this stage things are only just gearing up and we’ve just lost the first challenge in the orange team,” he said. Police have released footage of a man they wish to speak to as well as a Holden sports sedan stolen from a Cranbourne East home on 11 March. Casey CIU detectives say burglars broke into a house and stole the silver HSV GTS sedan from its garage on Muirfield Close about 7am while the owners were on holiday. Two days later, the stolen car and a man were captured on CCTV footage as the car’s occupants scoured through several cars at a car yard in Pakenham at 8pm. The car yard’s owner and son, alerted by an alarm, observed the HSV parked in the business’ driveway. The stolen car and its occupants fled and were chased by the car yard owner in his own vehicle before the cars collided in a nearby court. The HSV driver, described as of Islander appearance, solid build and bald, drove from the scene. The stolen car was found burnt-out on Loch-Wonthaggi Road, Almurta, on 15 March. YMCA Casey ARC and RACE have recently hosted a group of Taiwanese swimming instructors for swimming workshops to reduce drowning deaths in Asia. According to a Taiwanese study, Taiwan has the third highest drowning rate in the world, with Taiwanese children being three times more likely to drown than Australian children. The results of this study were the trigger for a re-assessment of how Taiwanese children are taught to swim. The workshops at ARC and RACE were specifically designed to teach the Taiwanese instructors the methods Australian swim instructors use to teach children, toddlers and infants how to swim. Australia has one of the lowest drowning rates in the world and the nationwide ‘learn to swim’ mentality means most children undergo swimming lessons as part of their schooling. “We needed to learn other ways of teaching and to research whether there was a more effective way to conduct lessons,” Gilbert Chin, a participant on the trip said. Police are seeking public assistance to identify a man who was found in the backyard of a property in Clyde on 21 November 2016. The homeowner returned to his house about 4.15pm, where he noticed the unknown person at the back door of the house. The owner ran around his house to confront the man but by the time he reached the back of the house, the unknown man had fled the property. Detectives have released a digital composite image of a male who they believe will be able to assist them with their inquiries. The Ripe for Change Small Grants Program will be providing up to $10,000 to innovative food system projects in the Casey Council area. Ripe for Change is a philanthropic initiative which aims to make the Victorian food system more sustainable. Its goal is to address complex food issues by taking a localised approach. The new grants program is the first of its kind and is being trialled through the Casey Cardinia Foundation, with applications invited from Casey, Cardinia and the Mornington Peninsula. Executive Officer of the Casey Cardinia Foundation Therese Howell said the small grants program was an exciting opportunity to further support the community by enabling philanthropic funds into the region. “We’re encouraging innovative projects that collaborate with other groups and organisations,” Ms Howell said. “We’re looking to inspire groups and organisations to think outside the square and look at their potential to do great things in this space.”

Funding for the grants program is being provided through the Australian Environment Grantmakers Network (AEGN). AEGN Giving Green manager Esther Abram said the Ripe for Change grants were a terrific opportunity for Community groups in Casey to get funding support for work to improve the local food system. “Community interest in sustainable food has grown, but there hasn’t been much funding available. Ripe for Change is hoping to address this gap," she said. Australian Community Philanthropy executive officer Kate Buxton said the Casey Cardinia Foundation had demonstrated leadership and innovation in their work on the Ripe for Change Small Grants Program. “It’s a fantastic example of collaboration, and I’m really excited to see the Casey Cardinia Foundation leading the way,” she said. Jump for joy - and Pop By Russell Bennett Right before Keenan O’Hanlon takes off at the end of the runway, he always goes through the same routine - he looks to the sky for a boost from his Poppy, pulls up his socks, and then it’s go time. When he takes flight, he has to be seen to be believed - soaring through the air like something out of this world. The Cranbourne North 14-yearold is part of the sports academy program at Alkira Secondary and since March last year, his routine - and his trusty favourite spikes, which are a full size too small - have helped him rack up an astonishing 11 state or national medals across the long jump and triple jump. His personal best in his pet event, the triple jump, came in March this year when he leapt a staggering

12.83 metres at the Little Athletics State Track and Field Titles. And he’s still only 5’4”. To put that into context, a regulation AFL goal square extends only nine metres out from the goal posts. Whether it’s at state or national events, Keenan has made quite the habit out of winning - improving his triple-jump personal best by about a metre-and-a-half over the past 12 months alone. When the Cranbourne Little Athletics member competed in the Australian Little Athletics Championships in Adelaide last April, he did so with a broken wrist ... and he still won a bronze medal. “Coming second so many times played a really big part in it,” Keenan said of his astonishing success. “Once I won once, I had to keep winning. I hate losing.”

Keenan won six silver medals before his first gold, but now he gets angry when he doesn’t win. “I don’t even have the best technique in triple jump - I just do what I do,” he explained. "I don’t try and jump in a specific way - I just do what feels comfortable. “I do a big hop, not that big of a step, and then a big jump to finish.” Although his favourite spikes are now a full size too small and are starting to feel a touch uncomfortable, Keenan refuses to let them go. Chasemore chases his dream By Nick Creely Cranbourne premiership player and Wookey Medallist Matthew Chasemore is in talks to return to the Victorian Premier Cricket competition, as a playingcoach with St Kilda next season. Chasemore played 29 matches at the Saints from 2013/14 to 2014/15, where he also represented Victoria in the Second XI competition. He then left the club to return to Cranbourne. Chasemore told Star News exclusively that his possible return to the elite competition is about challenging himself to once again put his name up in lights for a late Victorian Bushrangers' berth even at the age of 34. “The door hasn’t closed - I was chasing a goal of state-cricket and told I wasn’t going to be looked at - do I believe I’m good enough? Yep,” he said.

“I still think I could play Big Bash, or if thrown out into the Shield, I’d be fine but I’m 34, realistically it won’t happen. “At the moment, I’ve had some discussions with St Kilda to go back - they’ve shown some interest, as have other clubs - I look at all the options, and I’d love to play there again - the brain tells me to do it, the body tells me I’m kidding myself. “The thing with Premier Cricket, I need to know that my body will allow me to - I’ve joined a boxing gym down my way - I’m working to get my body good enough to play at that level. “If I get everything right, Premier Cricket is likely to be my path, there’s nothing better - until I rule that out everything is on the back-burner.” Although happy at the Eagles, his junior club, Chasemore is unsure at this stage whether the club believes he is in their plans, and will sit down with the

club shortly to discuss his future. “Things have changed a little bit - I don’t know everything yet, I’m not sure what Cranny are doing - I’ve told them to take time and figure out the direction of the club - if Steve Spoljaric and I don’t fit into it, we’re grown men - my heart is there, but it’s out of my control,” he said. “At this stage, I’m a Cranbourne player but we’ll see what happens - I don’t play for money, it’s the total opposite.” Rumours circulated that Chasemore was going to join his great mate Nick Jewell at Main Ridge in the MPCA next year, but quashed the possibility, at least for the next few years. “I don’t fit into Main Ridge’s points but I’ll coach them - I actually started the rumours to start some chaos,“ he said. “Will I play there eventually? One hundred per cent - at some stage.“

Comets’ first win for season

State League 5 - South Casey Panthers have continued their great start to the season with a 3-0 victory at home over Pakenham United FC in their State League 5 match on Saturday. The win takes them to the top of the ladder with wins in both of their games this season. Following on from their first round win, Casey Panthers were again at home and in front of a large crowd. Strong competition was provided by Pakenham United in a physical game and it was club captain, Martin Byrnes, who was able to break the defence to score the opening goal of the match with a long range kick. This was later followed by Shane Scott and Steven Kassabian, late in the game, to record a hard fought win for the Panthers. After a disappointing 2016 season, new Senior Coach, Lee Pritchard, was appointed last November and he has built a new squad of senior and reserve players, who have been training since early December, with the goal of bringing the club a promotion through a successful season in 2017 and to develop a pathway for development of the current junior players at the club. The Panthers travel to Somerville next week in their third round match and will be looking to continue the winning form. In other matches, Drouin defeated Somerville 2-0 and Bunyip fell 0-3 to Lyndale United.

Haul of medals for Masters Despite being the smallest venue in Victorian Masters Athletics, Casey accumulated a remarkable total of nineteen medals - twelve of them gold - at the 2017 Victorian Masters Track and Field Championships from Saturday 25 March to Sunday 26 March. Seven athletes dominated their events, ably led by Venue Manager Paul Olsson who claimed two gold and one silver in the M60-64 division in the hammer, weight throw and triple jump events, followed by evergreen Mike Hall in the

M75-79 division with five medals - gold in high jump, silver in pole vault and bronze in 60m, 100m and 200m. Newcomer Rhiannon Lester in the W35-39 division celebrated her inaugural State Championships with three gold medals in long jump, 60m and 100m and silver in the triple jump. National Champions Pramesh Prasad in the M40-44 division, secured gold medals in both his 3000m and 1500m walk, and Shaun Taylor in the M30-34 division made a clean

sweep of all his three events 60m,100m, and 200m. John Hallo in the M70-74 division won gold in the 3000m walk and Albin Hess got silver in his 1500m walk in the M5559 division. State League 2 - South-East Berwick City travelled to play Peninsula Strikers. In blustery conditions, it was Berwick who took early control of the game, dominating possession but with little reward until the 35th minute when the Strikers keeper misjudged a long range free kick from Erkan Filiz that found the back of the net to send the visitors into the break 1-0 up. A great solo effort by Ruben Ichim then put Berwick 2-0 up early in the second half before the Strikers pulled one back.

However, a fine team move in the 69th minute was finished off by Gary Davidson to restore the 2-goal advantage to Berwick. Not long after another Strikers goal made the final 10 minutes an interesting affair with Berwick hanging on to win 3-2. Berwick assistant coach Shane Duhau said after the game it was pleasing to see the new recruits play well. “We were always on top but made it difficult for ourselves by not taking all of our chances,” he said. “It was great that three of our new recruits scored today and we can see that the team is starting to gel and will get better”. Next week Berwick will be looking to keep their unbeaten run going when they are back at home against Frankston Pines.

FFV - State Leagues REVIEW - ROUND 2 State League 1 - South-East The Casey Comets secured their first win of the 2017 season with a solid 3-0 win against Malvern City last Friday Night at Comets Stadium. Ryan Hughes got the opening goal from a well taken penalty kick in the sixth minute which set the game up for the Comets and they grew in confidence and controlled the game in the first half. Allando Matheson finally scored his first goal for the Comets when in the 32nd minute, he latched on to a fine through-ball from Ray Markley, rounded the Malvern keeper Alex Connell and slotted it home. As expected, Malvern regrouped in the second half and despite creating some chances, the Comets defence held firm with goalkeeper Faraz Zenoozi calming everything down and mopping up any Malvern attacks. Matheson added to his tally and put the game beyond doubt in the 80th minute when, from a well taken corner by Andy Stubley, he rose above the Malvern defence and headed it past Connell. Coach Jamie Skelly was happy as he got the “reaction” from the squad he wanted after the opening game defeat. The squad trained well during the week and capped it off with a good win. The Reserves clawed back from being 2-0 down at half-time to salvage a draw. Goals from new recruit Orrin Giesbers in the 52nd minute and a sublime effort from Jack Duffield in the 77th minute secured a point from last season’s champions. With the fixture versus Malvern being reversed the Comets are at home again next Saturday 8 April against Morwell Pegasus. Reserves are at 1pm and Seniors at 3pm.

Coming into the game after an impressive victory over the Power, the Rays were sky-high on confidence early, with Riley D’Arcy kicking the first goal of the game and Bailey Williams snaring a major only ten minutes later. After a close and tight affair in the first quarter, the Falcons were irresistible once the siren sounded to begin the second term, notably through the midfield, piling on five unanswered goals to take a commanding 33-point lead into half-time. With some fight at the beginning of the third-quarter, the Stingrays were simply overrun by a well-drilled midfield later in the quarter, with highly touted-youngsters James Worpel (22 disposals and one goal) and Cassidy Parish (33 disposals) running amok and showing off some class. Not even the humble and much-loved footy record has survived the technological tsunami sweeping the world after the South East Football Netball League’s decision to go digital in 2017. Supporters of all nine clubs in SEFNL were left bemused on Saturday as gatekeepers gave a blank look to their request for a staple of Australian Rules football since 1912. Supporters who have contacted the Gazette said they had no idea the change was being implemented and were confused watching the Round 1 fixture, with new players in new jumper numbers at each club hard to distinguish. According to SEFNL Leagues Manager Liz Triffitt, the change was brought about after all club presidents were surveyed about the future of the booklet. SEFNL now sends the completed digital copy to the clubs on Friday, with the clubs responsible for printing their own versions prior to the Saturday fixture. The footy record is also available via the TeamApp smartphone app. “We surveyed the clubs and

It’s up to the clubs now to print off the team lists after they’ve been sent to them on Fridays.” Triffitt agreed that communicating the change could have been handled better, but said there were positives to come from the move. “We’ve had 3000 views online and the clubs now have the opportunity to create links to their websites, to an event they may be hosting, and even links to their sponsors,” she said. Club presidents were mixed

with their views, one describing the change to digital as the “worst decision he had ever seen,” while another said “the inconvenience was bigger than he thought.” One club president said his club had definitely not agreed to the change to digital and would only have done so if the on-line version was run in conjunction with a hard copy. “And we’re still getting charged for a record they’re not producing anymore,” the president said. Another said he was not fussed by the changed and it was just another sign of the times. Most agreed that printing the digital version would add costs to their clubs and would put further pressure on the volunteers that support their clubs.

VFL PRACTICE MATCH The Casey Demons 10.15(75) have edged Box Hill Hawks 10.12(72) by three points in a thrilling contest at Casey Fields on Saturday, as the Demons continue an impressive build up to Round 1. Box Hill was the better side early, but the Dees were strong defensively, taking some crucial intercept marks in the backline. Hawks’ small forward Blake Hardwick kickstarted proceedings with the opening goal, in what was only one of two goals scored in the quarter. Inaccuracy plagued the Demons who kicked 0.6 in the first-term, and they would have been shaking their heads in disbelief when they went into the half-time break down by 38 points having kicked 2.10. The Demons got going in the second-half straightaway with Tim Smith taking a spectacular mark in the opening minute which he calmly went back and slotted the set-shot. Casey then got on top of the Hawks with fluent ball-movement as they kept getting shots on goal, but more importantly, they started kicking them. Two late goals to Melbourne-listed Tom Bugg and Goy Lok pegged the margin back to 14 points heading into the last-quarter. The Dees then showed why they were runnersup last season, controlling the game in the final 30 minutes, and showcasing their trademark pressure. With just minutes to go, the Demons were able to quickly rebound the ball into the waiting hands of Yillber Zijai, who calmly slotted a goal from the forward pocket to pinch the lead and the game. Dean Kent was the leading possession getter, with Sam Frost, Corey Maynard and Eddie Morris all chiming in to be among the best. Yillber Zijai was great up forward kicking three goals and accumulating 18 possessions. The Demons have remained unbeaten throughout the pre-season matches, and will finish off their practice matches with a clash against Werribee on Saturday at Casey Fields. In their earlier practice matches, the Demons defeated Port Melbourne by 44 points and Williamstown by 36 points. They begin their season on 15 April against Williamstown at Burbank Oval.

Old foes in blockbuster By David Nagel Gaining a physcological edge over an equally-talented competitor is just one of the prizes on offer for Berwick and Cranbourne when the two powerhouse sides of the South East Football Netball League collide at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday. These two have broken the heart of the other over the last two years, Berwick winning the 2015 grand final before the Eagles turned the tables in an epic season-decider last year. But both teams will take a new look into this clash, Berwick with a new coach and new game plan under Stewart Kemperman while Cranbourne looked younger and quicker against Hampton Park last week. The biggest prize for Kemperman and his Cranbourne counterpart Simon Goosey is to gain knowledge and some intellectual property on what the other is trying to achieve. “They’re obviously learning a new system, defence comes first, and this week will give us a good look at how they’ve changed,” Goosey said. “It’s no secret to these clubs that we press pretty hard and it will be inter-

Kandakji kicked seven goals to live up to his exciting practice match form. “He’s a genuine crumber but having said that he probably took mark of the year in our last practice match as well,” Goosey said. “He comes from Oakleigh Districts and has been thereabouts but has probably never taken his footy as seriously as he should; he just wants to test himself at a better level of footy.” Hard-presenting forward Troy Tharle kicked five for the winners, Mat Fletcher four, while Bigaignon, Daniel Kitto and Luke Bee-Hugo snagged three apiece. Berwick’s Battle of the Creek victory over Beacy was exactly that - a real battle - the Wickers kicking four goals to one in the final term to run out three-goal winners. “They probably surprised us a little with how strong they were behind the footy, and that’s going to keep them in a lot of games this season,” Kemperman said. ROC wins battle against Doves By David Nagel The South East Football Netball League looks set for a startling metamorphosis after Cranbourne and ROC pulled off surprise upsets against two of last year’s finalists on Saturday. The Eagles proved far too strong for a disappointing Hampton Park at Casey Fields, winning 50-33, while the Kangaroos emerged victorious in the close one of the day, returning from Robinson Reserve with a gritty 48-44 triumph over Doveton. Throw in a much-improved performance from last year’s cellardweller Berwick, and a dominant display from Tooradin over Pakenham, and all sectors of the 2016 ladder look set for a reshuffle. ROC’s list has really suffered over the last few years with experience, but the Kangaroos welcomed back some familiar faces on Saturday and reaped the rewards against Doveton. The Kangaroos will have a bumper crop of juniors coming through in about 10 years’ time after the birth of child after child at the club. Sure it’s great for the future, but those baby bumps took many a fine player away from the netball court over the last few years. Returning from the maternity ward on Saturday were Amy Jones, Sarah Smith and Mel Overdyk, adding some real substance to the look of the Kangaroos around the court. Smith (GS) was in good touch under the ring, Jones (WA) quality through the midcourt, while Overdyk (GK) put her experience to good use to form a solid defensive unit with Laura Quinn (GD). The two gun mid-courters ROC’s Ash Barnett and Doveton’s Zali Mifsud - had an exciting battle throughout the day in the centre. Coach Liz Edwards and Shonalene San Jose threatened to post a winning score for the Doves but the Kangaroos held firm for a confidence-boosting victory. “Let’s call them the mature heads around the club, they were saying we just don’t win in round one so to do that was really satisfying,” said

Doveton play an aerial game, a physical game, and we stood up to that pressure and showed that the fitness work we’ve been doing over summer is really paying dividends.” Cranbourne’s victory over Hampton Park was also most impressive, the Eagles, the most stable list from 2016 taking on the revolving-door type approach from the Redbacks. Eagles’ coach Donna Wilson said going into the season that familiarity would be one her side’s greatest strengths -and it certainly panned

out that way. “We had a couple of things go against us that would have thrown us right out in the past but the girls just stood up,” Wilson said. Tegan Stahl was outstanding for the Eagles. The hype surrounding TooradinDalmore and its exciting crop of recruits appears to be right on the mark after the Seagulls scored the most emphatic victory of the day, 66-23, against Pakenham at Tooradin. The Gulls took a huge leap forward in 2016, going from a winless 2015 to playing finals, and appear to be on an upward curve once again. New recruits, Alex Maher, Jess Cox,

Sara Duncan and Bec Kinna all played major roles in the victory. And Beaconsfield has made a solid start to its 2017 campaign, winning 52-40 in the Battle of the Creek at Holm Park Reserve. Champion mid-courter Jasmine Jones (C) stepped straight back into the thick of the action for the Eagles, controlling her battle with Charlotte Tiplady in the first half. Boroondara recruit Emily Boribon (GA) teamed up well with goal-shooters Bianca Sanzaro and Courtney Davey, while Dani Cameron, Taylah Jencke and Britnee Tyers made life difficult for Berwick’s goalers.
