Hit-run a mystery Someone killed Peter Van Danh. They ran over him in a vehicle as he lay intoxicated on Prior Road, Noble Park, about 10.20pm on 11 September 2014 and then fled the scene. State Coroner Sara Hinchey concluded after a hearing on 22 March that the driver and vehicle responsible had not been identified. She said the police Major Collision Investigation Unit conducted “an extremely thorough investigation”. “Mr Danh’s death is an unsolved homicide case which Victoria Police continues to investigate,” she said.

“I am satisfied that no investigation which I am empowered to undertake would be likely to result in the identification of the person or persons who caused Mr Danh’s death.” Police initially thought someone deliberately mowed down Mr Danh. His parents, Trung and Anh Danh, called for the driver to come forward at a press conference on 5 November, 2015. “He was really nice,” distraught mother Anh said. “He loved me, I loved him.” Father Trung said: “Every day I can’t forget. It’s like yesterday my son had an accident.” Forensic pathologist Dr Joanna Glengarry said Mr Danh, 36, suffered “severe head injuries” consistent with “crushing”.

along Prior Road towards Noble Street and backtracked about 38 seconds later. Four minutes later Volkan Yildiz turned into Prior Road from Noble Street, noticed an object on the road and slowed down. “About two metres from the object he recognised it to be a person lying on the road, with blood coming from his head,” Coroner Hinchey said. He called an ambulance. Another motorist, Jaswant Singh, briefly stopped at the scene about 10.23pm and two minutes later Stevin Toner arrived on his skateboard. He checked for signs of life “and found none”. Paramedics and police arrived shortly afterwards and declared Mr Danh dead.

“There was a patterned abrasion and black discolouration of the right side of the face that had appearances suggestive of a tyre tread or similar,” she said. By Casey Neill “It looks more like a tip than an entrance to Dandenong.” Bob Malcolm lives near the Mile Creek’s intersection with Cheltenham Road and regularly walks along the waterway. “It’s a disgrace,” he said. “Graffiti is plastered all over the concrete walls. Trees and shrubs have died. The rubbish has piled up. “What plants you can see are surrounded by cans, tins, cartons. “Somebody could be knocked off and their body could be dumped there and nobody would find it for months.” The Journal first raised Mr Malcolm’s concerns on 20 April last year and he said nothing had changed. “It’s exactly the same as it was then, plus there’s been rubbish added to it,” he said. “If it was in a front yard of a private house they would be getting in trouble from the council.” He said the problem had developed since EastLink was built. “It was a picture,” he said. “There’s been no maintenance done whatsoever and that’s very disappointing.” Greater Dandenong Council’s Engineering Services Director Julie Reid said the council, Melbourne Water and VicRoads shared responsibility for maintaining the area. She said Melbourne Water was responsible for the waterway, banks and landscaped areas up to a perimeter fence that ran along each side of the creek. The council is responsible for the shared bicycle and pedestrian path and landscaping on the eastern side of the creek between the Melbourne Water fence and adjacent private properties. VicRoads is responsible for the small sections of creek frontage along Cheltenham Road. “Due to the recent storms there does appear

EastLink spokesman Doug Spencer-Roy said the company collected litter and rubbish generated by its road users. “Furthermore, EastLink road drainage passes through water treatment trains which trap litter prior to the water being discharged into Mile Creek,” he said. “We are confident that our established processes for litter control are not contributing to the litter in Mile Creek.” Mr Spencer-Roy said EastLink’s landscaping was intended to be “like a natural environment, incorporating millions of native trees, shrubs and plants, and a habitat for wildlife”.

Freewheeling life of guns and drugs ends in court By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been refused bail after allegedly crashing during a police pursuit in Dandenong and in a separate incident being found with an array of firearms and drugs in a motel room with a naked, unconscious female. Matthew George Matovic, 33, of Cranbourne, had sped away from police, who attempted to intercept him over a female passenger not wearing a seatbelt on Jones Road, Dandenong, on 1 March, a court heard. Matovic drove at an alleged 110 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the wrong side of Bennet Street, Dandenong, swerving past a truck that was pulling out into traffic. “I thought he was going to roll the car,” police informant Leading Senior Constable Paul McCracken told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 27 March. Still on the wrong side of Bennet Street, the accused allegedly went through a red light at the Cheltenham Road intersection. Despite braking heavily, he crashed into the side of a Hilux utility in a “fairly substantial” collision, Leading Sen Const McCracken said.

After Matovic’s car - with passenger on board - “rolled” through the intersection, he jumped out of the vehicle and fled by foot. He was arrested not far from the scene, wearing an empty holster and testing positive for methamphetamine in his system. Matovic told the court: “I tried to stop at the traffic lights but the car wouldn’t stop. “He could have been a family man just like me.” At the time, Matovic had extensive priors for drug use, family violence, armed robbery, burglary, firearms, driving and meth-trafficking. He’d spent more than 200 days in custody last year, had previously rammed a police vehicle and was not at his nominated Cranbourne address when visited by police several times, the court was told. Matovic was on summons over drugs and firearms found at Comfort Inn motel, Dandenong, on 12 November 2015. As paramedics treated the naked, unconscious female in the room, detectives allegedly found a loaded home-made nine-millimetre firearm next to Matovic’s motorcycle helmet. He was also charged with possessing GHB,

Greater Dandenong students are getting connected with volunteering. Dandenong High School, Lyndale Secondary College and Emerson School will each receive up to $9725 from the State Government to connect students with local volunteering opportunities. The cash will come from the $4.46 million Advance funding pool, directed at secondary schools in areas of high socio-economic disadvantage. It will help schools to connect young people to conservation programs, Surf Life Saving Associations, community radio programs, emergency services and animal welfare projects. Participants will develop practical teamwork, communication and project management skills.

Two wanted on warrants Police are seeking help to find two people who are wanted on warrants and are known to frequent Greater Dandenong. Minju Kang, 46, is wanted in relation to criminal damage during August 2015. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court has issued a warrant for her arrest. She’s described as Minju Kang. 160 centimetres tall with a thin build, brown eyes, black hair and a tanned complexion. Ms Kang is known to frequent the Noble Park area. Desmond Andy is wanted in relation to a burglary and theft that occurred in March 2014. The Dandenong Magistrates’ Court has issued two warrants for the 20-year-old’s arrest. Tree branch raider Police arrested a Dandenong woman who allegedly threatened a milk bar attendant with a tree branch. Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Riley Wesley said the 26-year-old woman entered the store in Ross Street, Dandenong, about 4.20pm on Monday 27 March. He alleged she demanded money but was told to leave. She complied, but returned two minutes later armed with a 180cm long tree branch. Sen Const Wesley said the woman again demanded cash and waved the branch around the store. He said she stole an EFTPOS machine and fled, but was arrested nearby shortly after.

Bunnings takes over The rumours are true - the Dandenong Bunnings store is relocating to Dandenong South. Bunnings’ Property General Manager Andrew Marks said the company had entered into an agreement with the landlord of a site at South Gippsland and Princes highways - formerly a Masters store - to convert it into a new Bunnings Warehouse. Mr Marks said works would start in the coming months, with the store set to open in the middle of the year.

Man hit in failed robbery Knife-wielding would-be thieves attacked a man walking in central Dandenong in a failed robbery. The Dandenong 51-year-old was on foot with a friend waiting for the pedestrian lights to change at Lonsdale and Foster streets about 10.15pm on Friday 24 March. A group of men described as African in appearance approached and demanded money. When the victim said he had none, one man produced a knife and slashed the victim’s clothing. He punched the victim to the face, causing him to fall to the ground where he continued to punch and kick him.

this month. Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, UNO High Commissioner for world refugees and a semi-mystic figure to many of the world’s Islamic followers. He is the son of the late Aga Khan, whose life story reads like a tale from the Arabian Nights. The fabulously wealthy Aga Kahn was a God to millions of religious followers. Each year he measured his body weight with diamonds and gave them away to the poor. Prince Sadruddin is in his early thirties and is the most romantic figure in the Middle East. A graduate of Harvard, he is the founder of the Harvard Islamic Society, a bachelor of arts and one of the world’s outstanding students of Middle Eastern studies. He worked closely with the United Nations Organisation during the World Refugee Year 1959-‘60, and has since been appointed High Commissioner.

Prince Sadruddin has continued with Aga Khan’s burning ambition to relieve the plight of world refugees, and this is the reason for coming to Dandenong during his six-day stay in Victoria. He will visit Dandenong on 17 April and after lunch with the mayor and councillors he will meet some of the White Russian families settled locally in district homes by the World Council of Churches.

It starts unappetisingly with a ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’ - or SCOBY - a mushroomlike mass that floats in a jar of brown tea liquid. Holding a PhD in food science, Ms Pallas frequently workshops on fermented vegies and kombucha tea across Melbourne, including Hampton Park in early May. She said there seems to be a growing yearning for natural ways to feel better. Ms Pallas had once been wracked by fatigue, IBS and intestinal parasite giardia that required two rounds of antibiotics. “Antibiotics are good but doctors don’t tell you to take probiotics. The antibiotics just

yeast saccharomyces boulardii, which lives in the gut for several days immune from antibiotics and stomach acids. Its impact requires an ongoing, daily ingestion, Ms Pallas said. It takes just 10 minutes a week to keep the kombucha tea alive by decanting up to 90 per cent of the starter solution and topping it up with fresh tea. It lives in a jar under a cloth at room temperature, kept away from the kitchen where airborne mists of cooking oil can harm the kombucha culture. ‘Prank calls’ put on hold By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong ice addict has pleaded guilty to repeatedly “prank-calling” his ex-employer’s wife and three random women late at night on a daily basis. Peter Doumouliakas, 29, faced charges such as stalking his boss’s partner, harassing the other women as well as drug possession and drug-driving offences at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 20 March. In a victim impact statement, a complainant described feeling sleep-deprived and “on-edge in my own home” due to the call-barrage. In an attempt to trace the calls, she was instructed by Telstra to answer them all throughout the late night and early mornings over several months. “Not knowing who or why (these calls were made) left me feeling violated,” she wrote. She started thinking of how to protect her children if “something was to happen” and about the need to move house. The court heard that the boss’s partner started receiving phone calls from a private number a week after the accused stopped work at the company.

The calls continued between June and October 2015. At its worst, the calls came on a nightly basis and up to 15 calls a night between 11pm and 3am. On each occasion, the caller would stay on the line and say nothing. On two occasions, a male in the background made “pornographic sounds”. Doumouliakas admitted making the traced calls from his and his mother’s phones, telling police they were “funny” “prank” calls. “Just doing it to p*** them off,” he told police. He told police he didn’t call his boss because “he probably wouldn’t get as agitated and angry and have felt what I felt”. It was easier to punish the wife, he said. Doumouliakas similarly repeatedly called three women who weren’t known to him nor associated with him at all in October 2015, December 2015 and February 2016. He blamed his ice habit for the calls, which sometimes featured either a male’s sexual moaning and grunting or dead silence. Sometimes he said: “I’m coming for you” or “you’re dead”. Doumouliakas was also charged after driving at high-speed to evade police in Oakleigh on 16 February.

At the time he had seven outstanding warrants, had failed to answer bail multiple times and told police he was using ice on a daily basis. He was also charged with drug-driving on ice in May 2016, and possessing a deal bag of ‘rock salt’, found in his unregistered car with an ice pipe and blowtorch lighter after he was intercepted by police in November 2015. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said she required a psychiatric assessment of Doumouliakas prior to sentencing. “You can’t expect me to sentence him today without some sort of evidence of what’s causing this behaviour with him. “I have to know if he is released in the community he’s not a risk.” Ms O’Donnell was concerned by Doumouliakas’s continued calls even after he was arrested, interviewed by police and expressed remorse. “So many people that come before the court (have a drug issue) and we don’t see this sort of behaviour.” Doumouliakas was remanded for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 12 May, pending a psychological report.

A missing mum and baby were last seen in Dandenong. Police are appealing for public help to find Logan Whatman, 20, and her six-month-old daughter Karma. They were last seen on Monday 20 March. Ms Logan is described as 160 centimetres tall with long blonde wavy hair, thin build and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and black skinny jeans.

Man faces court after arrest Police have arrested a man wanted on nine outstanding arrest warrants in Dandenong North. Investigators from the fugitive team of the Dandenong Divisional Response Unit arrested the 37-year-old about 12.25pm on Thursday 30 March. He man faced multiple charges at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court later that afternoon. “We have dedicated units now targeting people with outstanding warrants of arrest,” Inspector Mike Daly said. “I urge all people who have warrants outstanding for their arrests to make contact with their local police to take care of them before we catch up with them.” He thanked members of the public for their assistance.

A man was stabbed during a street brawl in Dandenong North. Police received reports about the scuffle in Downer Crescent about 6.45pm on Saturday 18 March, but arrived to find the crowd had dispersed. About two hours later, a 26-year-old Dandenong man presented at Dandenong Hospital with a single stab wound to his left chest and shoulder area. He told police he was stabbed at the Downer Street incident but did not know his attacker. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives appealed for anyone who could identify the person responsible to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

They spelled out the school’s initials and held up signage with the message “bullying - no way” on Friday 17 March. “We are very proud to be a part of something so positive and to stand together, united on this National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence,” assistant principal Peter Jeans said. pregnant with her son the following year. “I still stick to that decision,” she said. “I wouldn’t change it because it wouldn’t be the mother I am today.” Ms Andrew’s first job in Australia was at Dandenong South glass factory Pilkington. “Working with 775 men taught me a lot about how to deal with men,” she said. At her job interview she was asked if she could handle working in the male-dominated environment. “I married one and I gave birth to one, what more do you want?” was her response. She started at 9am the next day and worked there for just over six years. Ms Andrew took short courses, volunteered, worked part-time and had three more daughters, now aged 7, 8 and 9. “I decided to go back to school,” she said. “I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything but factory work. I’ve grown up in factory work and it’s always been my comfort zone, my genre, how to survive.” In the six weeks since she took on the Benevolent Society role she’s helped 52 clients with material aid. Thirty-eight were aged between 40 and 50 years, and 28 were first-time clients. Ms Sheldon said the op shop could help people in need to maintain dignity and was a great training ground for students and jobseekers.

A typo led Nooroa Andrew to her new role as the Dandenong Benevolent Society co-ordinator. The Cook Islands-born, New Zealand-raised mother of five took on the role on 23 January this year after Margaret Ladner finished her 30-plus year stint managing the Thomas Street charity. Ms Andrew will finish a dual diploma in community development and case management with Springvale Learning and Activities Centre (SLAC) in April. “I found SLAC by accident. SLAC was a misprint I put into Google,” she said. She said the centre offered the course she was after at an affordable price. “And they are part of the community,” she said. In November the Journal revealed that SLAC would take over the Dandenong Benevolent Society op shop and give it a fresh look. “I was really shocked that they offered me this position so early into completing my diploma,” Ms Andrew said. “I’m still trying to figure it out what it is they’re seeing.” But SLAC manager Elena Sheldon said Ms Andrew “was volunteering there one full day every week, never missing one and juggling studies and family” when the takeover was first suggested. “It was then that we could see not only her attitude but the enormous creative talent she has,” she said. “She could easily dress a classy table with brica-brac in the shop, she has great taste and sense of fashion. “Nooroa has the most important combination of skills for community work - empathy, energy and vision when dealing with people from all walks of life, and getting the things done. I also believe she is a great role model for the community.” Ms Andrew fell pregnant with her first child at age 15, and gave up the daughter. “My elder sister and her husband loved her like she was their own,” she said. “It was at the cost of me not having any contact with her.” She left New Zealand for Australia when she fell

$12m for skills By Casey Neill Chisholm Institute has welcomed a $12 million boost. “We’ll make sure it’s put to good use,” Chisholm board chairman Stephen Marks said. Training and Skills Minister Gayle Tierney visited the TAFE’s Dandenong campus to make the announcement on Wednesday 29 March. Mr Marks also told her that Chisholm had been entrenched in the South East for nearly 20 years. In response, Ms Tierney said Chisholm should be proud of its reputation. She’d just helped students to apply vinyl to vehicles in the school’s automotive training centre and toured the mechatronics and robotics workshop. Ms Tierney said the cash would come from

the Stronger TAFE Fund, part of Skills First, and would make sure Chisholm had the resources needed to address industry skill gaps, deliver innovative training and grow enrolments. “I think there is a new spring in our step,” she said. “There is a new era of opportunity in terms of TAFE in this state.” She also met representatives from Chisholm’s Skills and Jobs Centre, located on Lonsdale Street in Dandenong, and heard that the centre had helped more than 1200 individuals and 139 employers with training and careers advice, employment services and workshops since opening in January last year. In the past two years, Chisholm has received $38.5 million from the TAFE Rescue Fund, $2.9 million from the TAFE Back to Work Fund and $1.4 million for Skills and Jobs centres.

Melbourne Racing Club recently briefed Greater Dandenong Council on the masterplan it is preparing for the Springvale site, but there’s still no timeline for the plan. The late Roy Aspinall’s family spread his ashes at Sandown Racecourse on Tuesday 21 March, as per his final wishes. Melbourne Racing Club will name a race in his honour in the summer and is considering installing a plaque at the course.Roy was a racing writer and died on 3 September last year. Ninety-five golfers took to the Commonwealth Golf Club course in South Oakleigh on 20 March to raise money for students in need. Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation provides money to students living in the south-east who are experiencing hardship to help them to study. Gardens of zest By Casey Neill A colourful herb garden will stimulate the senses at Wallara. The Lions Club of Mordialloc-Mentone donated $1000 to the Dandenong-based disability support service as part of a $100,000 project to mark 100 years of Lions. Wallara’s Grass Busters team used the cash to transform an overgrown, disused garden space at the Potter Street headquarters into a useful space filled with herbs.

The garden maintenance crew has been around since 2013 and gives Wallara clients skills and confidence. The herb garden complements a sensory garden at the site. The plants will be used in cooking programs, and the craft group will decorate pots and plant cuttings to be sold in the Wallara Pop-Up Shop in Dandenong Plaza. Wallara is a support service for adults with a disability with a mission to empower its service users to lead the life that they choose.

Every bit of construction gets us closer to a better train network. Buses to replace trains from Sat 1st April to Wed 5th April, between Dandenong and Pakenham stations. The Victorian Government is building bigger, better trains here in Melbourne as part of the largest transformation in our train network’s history. Six tips from the inside on the drive to succeed By Casey Neill A young Franz Madlener never dreamed he’d make millions from his own business. He certainly never dreamed of going bankrupt and ending up in hospital following a nervous breakdown. But that’s exactly what happened, he told the first Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards breakfast for the year, held at Sandhurst Golf Club on Wednesday 29 March. “The best entrepreneurs do their best work while others go missing when things get tough,” he said. “It means that we dream and we follow our dream.” Mr Madlener’s foray into entrepreneurship started with using footy club food trays to serve snacks at the beach during the off-season. “As a child our dreams knew no boundaries,” he said. “We were all entrepreneurs and deep down we still are.” In 1971 he moved to Australia from Germany with his family and no English skills. He left school at 15 and worked as an apprentice mechanic, a DJ, a construction worker on the Rialto, a suit and trouser salesman, a roadie in a rock band, spotlight operator at a strip club and various other jobs - all before he was 19. Mr Madlener is now a Dandenong Market non-executive director. He’s best known for establishing global brand Villa and Hut. He sold the company to Allied Brands in 2009. Allied Brands collapsed 18 months later. “I didn’t get good legal advice - I assumed,” he said. “Get the best legal advice you can afford. “Good legal advice is expensive for a reason. “Don’t skimp on legal advice - or coffee.” He fought liquidators for seven years and eventually bought back his business, and re-sold

Mr Madlener shared a few tips for business success with breakfast guests. His first rule was never give up. “The only thing we’ll end up regretting is what we failed to try,” he said. Number two was to be committed. “There is no such thing as lucking your way to success,” he said. “There is no such thing as luck, just commitment.” Mr Madlener’s third rule was to build relationships and share a vision. “Don’t employ someone from a bad batch of candidates,” he said. “If the right person’s not there, keep looking.”

Keep training your workers, he urged, and debunked the common question ‘what if I train them and they leave?’. “What if you don’t train them and they stay!” he said. He said to look past location, exclusivity and price when seeking a competitive advantage competitors would always find a way to overtake. “If you get the best people you can put together, you’ve got something magic,” he said. Tip number four was to build a brand, not just a business. “Great brands make the invisible visible,” he said. “People don’t buy what it is or what it does, they buy what it does for them.” Embrace change was rule number five, and be a leader was number six.

Bubbly brewers have got a head for what people like By Casey Neill Brothers Callum and Nat Reeves tried their hand at making cider for a friend’s wedding. Now they’re exporting beer from Dandenong South to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. South East Brewing Company, Uncle’s Smallgoods and Dandenong Market were announced as Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards nominees at the chamber’s first breakfast for the year, held at Sandhurst Golf Club on Wednesday 29 March. Nat studied science at university and was a passionate home brewer. Callum had a background in wine. They turned their hands to the “really hoppy, American-style beers” they couldn’t find in Australia and last year set up in Dandenong South. They exported about eight containers of beer and cider last year and are now tapping into China. “We always try and stay a step ahead of the market and really look at what people love at the moment and what are they going to love next,” Callum said. Uncle’s Smallgoods has been a Dandenong fixture since 1994. Bert Glinka and Brendan D’Amelio acquired the store in September 2013. They both had corporate jobs they hated and decided to sell Uncles sausages at a festival, to huge success. “We really believed in the product, we couldn’t stop eating that sausage,” Bert said. The elderly Uncles owners were looking to step back and put the duo to the test with a truckload of wood for the smoker before agreeing to hand over the reins. This year they launched a sausage bouquet for Valentine’s Day and were inundated with demand. Their online store is now going strong, they acquired a factory in Dandenong late last year to pursue the wholesale market, and “in the short term we might see another Uncles in Dandenong”. 30 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 3 April, 2017

Speakers take a hole-istic line By Casey Neill The waste industry has changed a lot in the 35 years that Ward Petherbridge’s family has been involved with it. Long gone are the days of digging a hole, pushing the waste in and covering it up he told the SEBN industry breakfast at the Dandenong Civic Centre on Thursday 30 March. The event featured three speakers on the future of energy in Australia and the impact on business. Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti presented two Greater Dandenong Sustainability Awards. Mr Petherbridge took home the Sustainable Business Award on behalf of Dandenong South’s Smart Recycling Australia. Neighbour Biofuel Innovations was highly commended in the category. Smart Recycling Australia employs 50 staff and diverts 50,000 tonnes from landfill each year. Mr Petherbridge said he tried to think of ways to recycle items into things people needed, and could take by-products to other businesses in Greater Dandenong. The Quarter in Springvale won the Sustainable Development Award ahead of Intrapac’s Somerfield estate in Keysborough, which was highly commended. The 98 townhouses have an average energy rating of six stars, 2700 litre rainwater tanks, five-star air-conditioning systems, LED lights, solar hot water, natural ventilation and north-facing windows. Kate Griffiths from the Grattan Institute spoke about the energy ‘trilemma’ - affordability, reliability and sustainability. She said unclear climate change policy had created uncertainty in the national energy market, which made long-term decisions difficult. “It’s up to the government to make that clear signal. It’s mixed messages at the moment,” she said. Sustainability Victoria CEO Stan Krpan spoke about grants available for energy assessments and implementation. He urged businesses to think about how they could save energy before they turned to alternative supplies. Sustainability Melbourne Fund CEO Scott Bocskay explained environmental upgrade agreements and announced that the loans were coming to Dandenong in July. He said businesses could tap into loans for projects that would deliver environmental and productivity benefits, and repay via council rates.

She said the relatively new Sunday trading had become one of busiest days of the week and was further boosted by cultural celebrations and festivals. “It’s very colourful, it’s full of energy and we need to celebrate that,” she said. Burras say team talent is their best chance yet By Nicholas Creely “We want to play finals” These are the firm words of Keysborough coach Matt Ferguson who is desperate to see his club reach up the higher echelon of the ladder. The Burras enjoyed a stunning entry into the Southern Football League in 2015, finishing second on the table with 15 wins and just three losses. But footy is a funny old game and the Burras were knocked out in straight sets, ending their chance at a historic flag. Come the 2016 season and the Burras didn’t play finals, winning just seven games in a discouraging campaign. But the club wants to roar back into relevance and is believes that the squad assembled for 2017 is as talented a group as the Burras have ever put on the park. “We believe we’ve got the talent to play finals

and last year was a disappointing year with results, but we blooded around 20 blokes under 23 years old who played senior footy last year,” Ferguson said. “We believe we’ve got natural improvement and we’ve recruited brilliantly. With that we think we’ve got fairly strong depth along the line. “I think the club has gone through another rebuild in a way and we are even more prepared then we were when we first came into the Southern League.” The Burras have brought in some massive inclusions including returning star Tim Werner, Chris Bryan and a TAC Cup star in Jacob Bakes. “Tim Werner, who was a Narre Warren premiership player and former player, has come on as a playing assistant coach. “He is a schoolteacher and been amazing offfield, and on-field he is an absolute jet - he is one of the best players I’ve ever seen in local footy,” Ferguson said.

“Chris Bryan, who is someone who has played AFL, is massive for us. “Last year we struggled for a mobile tall forward and he has just been amazing for us - he has so much footy knowledge which I lean on not many defenders will look forward to playing against him. “We are so excited about what Jacob brings too - he is a very highly skilled player.” The club has also announced that it will field an Under 19s side in 2017 in what is an exciting development for its youth programs. “We’ll have an Under 19s this year in a joint venture with Carrum-Patterson Lakes, so that’s exciting, too. “It reinforces the path that we’re going down kids like him (Jacob Bakes) can see the care and importance we put on young players.” The Burras began their season on 1 April with a clash against Highett.

Cobras appeal for players to get where they’re going By Nicholas Creely The Sandown Cobras officially launched their 2017 season campaign on Saturday night as they look to put a horrid few years behind them. In what has already been a tough off-season for the club, the Cobras are attempting to change their image and culture and go in a new and exciting direction. Several announcements were made on the night, including the new 2017 Executive Board, the 2017 senior captain and club coaching staff. Cobras’ chairman Zain Machfud is adamant that the club is heading in the right direction despite a rather underwhelming amount of players currently at the club. He believes off-field they are making all the right moves, but without players the club is difficult to run for a variety of reasons. “In terms of our senior side, we are looking

strong - with a bit of turmoil last year we’re feeling the pinch a bit this year, kind of a roll-on effect,” he said. “We’ve had a bit of a turnover on our list in terms of players who’ve been good clubmen and a life-member has also moved on - we were looking to field three sides but at this stage we can only run two - the numbers are not where we want them to be. “We have a new board and direction and we’re steady off-field - we’re modernising how we do things, so things like social media engagement and in terms of how we deal with the press, but we need players. “Our senior coach is one of the best I’ve dealt with in my time in footy, but we just need some cattle to work with - we’re doing all the right things off-field, but we need the players there.” The club has already announced that they will be coach by Ange Sammaratino in 2017, with Simon Foster to be his assistant. In the Reserves,

McCormick is a former player of the club, having represented the Cobras in 114 senior games, and will be a handy addition to their staff, while Phil Dickson will also take up the duty of Director of Football. The Cobras will be lead into battle in 2017 under the captain Matthew Dickson, a star stalwart of the club who can guide them through a tough phase. The Cobras have added Beau McLean (Gembrook), Shane Scandolera (Tooradin) and Kyle Timms to their roster in 2017. They will kick off their season with a clash against Lyndale on 8 April at Barry Powell Reserve. He is a class above the DDCA and showed it with a vintage display. The Sri-Lankan professional continues to deliver at the Bloodhounds. His 62 on day one was worth about 150, such was the importance of getting his side off to a good start. 3. Yoshan Kumara (Springvale South, 2013/14) - 9/60 Incredible figures from Kumara considering it was in a losing-side. Kumara was the only bowler who looked like getting a wicket and almost singlehandedly kept them in the game. A truly incredible performance in a grand final but, unfortunately, couldn’t drag his side over the line against a champion Parkfield team. 4. Steven Spoljaric (Parkfield, 2013/14) 106 and 4/49 The legendary skipper was at his ultimate best in a premiership victory, making a day one century after coming in at 3/14 after Yoshan Kumara went berserk with the ball. He then backed up his colossal century up with a four-wicket haul, despite the heroics of Craig Slocombe. 5. Cam Dinger (Cranbourne, 2015/16) 6/44 and 3/24 In the greatest game in Turf 1 history, the Eagles and Bloods played out a true grand final epic. After Dinger took 3/24 to roll the Bloods for 138 in the first-innings, the Eagles were skittled for 65. But Dinger inspired a magical reverse-outright victory by taking a brilliant 6/44 in the second-innings. Dinger was also batting when the winning runs were hit.

The club has notched up a solid pre-season but still may be a little while off from challenging for a Division 2 flag. Some nice additions and a strong retention rate definitely have them primed to try and notch up more wins in 2017, but more

pain may be on the way. Adding James Gwilt, a 150-game AFL player is not only a massive addition for the Bulls’ development, but he is going to become an instant star of the competition. The EFL is going to continue to get tougher, and the Bulls have certainly lost some legends in Stewie Kemperman and Craig Anderson, but their quality, plus a busy off-season, will keep them among the pack in line for a premiership. The inclusion of Alwyn Davey and Clayton McCartney add some serious X-factor and have plenty of senior players and young talent to take them places. One of Nature’s gents launches Champion trainer Jason Thompson looks set to add another big-race trophy to his mantelpiece after Nature’s Gent zoomed around fastest in the heats of the 2017 Launching Pad at Sandown Park on Thursday night. The Group 2 series carries $410,000 in prizemoney - with $150,000 going to the winner - and the black dog out of Shakey Jakey-Midnight News looks set to figure prominently. Nature’s Gent took advantage of a fresh track in the opening race of the night, scorching around the 515-metre journey in the impressive time of 29.31 from box three. Kennel-mate Worm Burner was the only greyhound to run faster on the night, running 29.16 in the Mixed Grade 3/4. Nature’s Gent fell out of the boxes, but railed beautifully on the first turn and had taken the lead from early leader Dream Future as the field headed for the back straight. The pair pulled away for a thrilling duel over the concluding stages, Nature’s Gent holding a two-length margin on the line. Trainer Karen Leek may not have the profile of Thompson but she will also go into the semifinals confident of success after Riveting put a brave performance to take out heat two. Riveting started a pronounced favourite at $1.45 and begun well from the coveted red alley. But the Robert Britton-trained Brazilian Brae threatened to throw a spanner into the works, taking the lead up the back straight. Riveting showed tremendous courage, overcoming a severe check as the greyhounds wheeled for home to gain a late split on the rails to run away with an impressive victory. Britton had to wait until the second last heat for a Launching Pad win, with despised outsider Rock Up Top saluting in heat eight. Rock Up Top started at $19 on fixed odds and did well to hold off the Michelle Mallia-Magri trained Print The Money.

Champion slogger’s heart’s still in it even if his body’s laughing at him By Nicholas Creely Dandenong District champion and Wookey medallist Matthew Chasemore is in talks to return to the Victorian Premier Cricket competition as a playing coach with St Kilda next season. Chasemore played 29 matches at the Saints from 2013/14 to 2014/15, where he also represented Victoria in the Second XI competition. He then left the club to return to Cranbourne in what was a memorable homecoming, winning the Turf 1 flag against Springvale South in the greatest game in the competition’s history. Chasemore told the Journal exclusively that his possible return to the elite competition is about challenging himself to once again put his name up in lights for a late Victorian Bushrangers berth, even at the age of 34. “The door hasn’t closed - I was chasing a goal of state cricket and told I wasn’t going to be looked at - do I believe I’m good enough?
