Monster book fair on Pako By EMILY ROBINSON Geelong West’s Rotary Club has raised about $12,000 from its annual book fair, according to Projects director Michael Clyne. The Geelong Monster Book Fair featured over 30,000 books for sale, all a steal at just $1 each. “We’ve been doing a book fair for the last seven years,” Michael says. “In the last two years, we’ve actually been doing two book fairs a year - one in February and another in August. “We had a large supply of books we needed to start selling more of.” Now the Rotary Club’s major fund-raising event, the Geelong Monster Book Fair originally started as a “one-off event”. “It started as a result of the tsunami in Asia - it was so successful that we’ve continued to do it every year since. “‘A lot of people still read hard copy books - there are people who still love having a book to hold. “We had a queue waiting to get in on the Friday when we opened and a steady stream all weekend, covering all ages.” As well as selling second hand books, the Geelong Monster book fair also had “a small supply of brand new books” for sale.
BOOKWORMS: Geelong West Rotary’s Stephen Yewdall and Marie Nunan, Marnie Laurie and David Dadds have already started sorting titles for the next book fair.
All funds raised from the book fair will go towards supporting meaningful community projects. “We’ve given out $30,000 per year to local organisations - the majority of which has mainly been raised from the book fair. “We support the Barwon
Health transportation vehicles - they drive around and take patients to and from dialysis and chemotherapy appointments at the Barwon Hospital. “We also support Operation Newstart which works with secondary school children in the Geelong region.” Other beneficiaries include
Geelong Kokoda Youth Program, Samaritan House Geelong, the Christ Church Community Meals Program and other Rotary clubs. “We’ve already started collecting for the next book fair - we have a whole container of books we have to sort,” Michael says.
The Rotary Club of Geelong West is grateful for the support of Geelong Regional Library Corporation, City of Greater Geelong, Tuckers Funeral Service, Zippy Removals and Paul Bell Real Estate. The next Monster Book Fair will be held in August this year.

By LUKE VOOGT Flags, sequins and twirling frocks filled Pako from end to end as the street celebrated its biggest day of the year. Thousands lined Pakington Street for the sunny Saturday parade as Geelong’s many ethnic communities, and other groups, celebrated being themselves. The smell of sizzling grills filled the air with the flavours of the world as people all shapes, sizes and colours gathered in a melting pot of culture. Crowds cheered as Ukrainian dancers leapt in the air and leprechauns waved, and clapped Iraqi, Afghani and Tibetan refugees who had fled persecution. Assistant organiser Cathy Harper said the 35th Pako Festa was possibly the biggest ever with more than 100,000 people attending and 80 floats. “The atmosphere was electric - there were so happy faces! Geelong has a rich history of welcoming people from all over the world and we could see that at the parade. “It’s beautiful to see so many communities proudly promoting their culture through food and dance.”

Community Care Chemist Geelong West manager and pharmacist Erin Meys says being on Pakington Street is “vibrant and exciting”.
By EMILY ROBINSON Community Care Chemist has relocated from its former Gordon Street premises to the vibrant heart of Pakington Street. Now located in the old Gloria Jean’s building, the staff at Community Care Chemist have already noticed an abundance of foot traffic entering the pharmacy. Community Care Chemist Geelong West manager and pharmacist Erin Meys says “people just weren’t finding us on Gordon Avenue”. “We needed to be somewhere more accessible for our members.” Erin, who has worked at Community Care Chemist for five years, is especially excited about the pharmacy’s new location. “Being on Pakington Street is vibrant and exciting,” she smiles. “Along with the move, we’ve also added a new team leader and an extra pharmacist to the store.” Erin says the team at the pharmacy “have a big focus on the community”, given that it is community or member owned. “We are a not-for-profit friendly society pharmacy, so all of our profits are reinvested back into the business and community. “Community Care Chemist is also a very progressive pharmacy. The pharmacy industry is facing some real challenges and Community Care Chemist is using this as an impetus to keep evolving so that we can continue to meet the needs of our customers,” she says.
Committed to serving their customers with a “whole health and whole heart” approach, the team at Community Care Chemist offer holistic health solutions. Tutoring on Pako By EMILY ROBINSON Pakington Street’s newest tutoring program is planting seeds of confidence in schoolaged children. Director of Sprout Tutoring Lena Phillips brings 12 years of teaching experience to Geelong West. “I was a primary school teacher for 10 years in Sydney,” she says. As a classroom teacher, Lena identified strategies to engage diverse learners in the classroom and school community. “I am passionate about giving children confidence and the ability to take control of their learning.” Sprout Tutoring incorporates a holistic view of the Australian English Curriculum, and aims to support children and families in their academic success at school. “Tutoring gives children the space and time to focus on learning without distraction. “For a lot of children, tutoring allows them to have concepts reinforced that they’re a little bit uncertain about. “The sessions will help build a strong relationship between the child, their family and education.” Lena can customise tutoring packages to suit the learning needs of each child. “Working one-on-one with

After an hour, pull the balls out and roll to desired size, then roll the balls into some sesame seeds. They are now ready to eat. These can be frozen for up to a few months otherwise stored in the fridge for a week.

Paints are in their blood By EMILY ROBINSON Family-run business Haymes Paint is now in the hands of the fourth generation of Haymeses. The iconic Geelong store has been based on Pakington Street for nearly 50 years and re-opened last July with a refurbished store. Haymes Paint Geelong store manager Sue Stuart says along with the refurbishment, Haymes Paint Geelong also included a greater product range, speciality finishes and diversity of products for both trade and retail customers. But she says the “familyfriendly approach” is the company’s real point of difference. “Haymes Paint is still 100 per cent family owned – all of the family are heavily involved in the company,” Sue says. “Even the paint is still manufactured in Ballarat. “Haymes spend a lot of time and services to supply things for the retail customer- a lot of other companies are more focused on the trade.” Sue manages both the Ballarat and Geelong stores, which she says have a strong retail and DIY base. “I’ve worked for Haymes Paint for 10 years,” Sue smiles. “I love the relaxed environment of working in this industry – I love helping

Switch off and unwind A moment with studio founder and owner Mikayla Thomas from Move & Be Barre Studio How would you describe Move & Be Barre Studio? Move & Be Barre Studio is a place where people can switch off and unwind from their everyday lives, while doing their exercise in a beautiful, light-filled space. What do you love about barre? I love the variety and challenge that barre offers.You have the option of doing a slower paced, yoga-style barre class (Barre Balance), or a more intense cardiobased class (Barre Dynamic) depending on what you feel like on the day.

How many classes should people attend per week? I recommend doing three classes per week to build strength and definition in your body, as well as taking the time out for themselves.
Which class would you recommend for beginners? Barre Balance is a great class for beginners as its slower paced than the other barre classes. In all of our classes, we offer modifications to make an exercise more or less challenging, as well as assisting with injuries or pregnancy.
How many different teachers do you have at Move & Be and can you tell us a little about them? There are two other teachers at Move & Be - first we have Jo, who’s passionate about yoga and movement, her classes are challenging, structured and fun. Elise is our second teacher to come on board, her background is in clinical Pilates giving her an extensive knowledge of the body. Her classes are dynamic, creative and challenging. You’re very active on Instagram, how does this help you engage with the Pako community? Instagram is a great way to give the Pako community little snippets of who we are, and what we do. We

What makes you different to similar businesses on Pako? I think the other yoga/ Pilates studios on Pako Street all want to inspire people to move, exercise and live a healthy life. We see ourselves as less of an exercise destination, and more of a way of life.
