friends with all his heart. “It sounds cliched, but we were soulmates,” Mrs O’Toole said. “We were together for 48 years and we worked together for nearly 30 years; there are not many couples that can wake up together in the morning, go to work all day together, come home together and be as happy as we were.” Dermot and Bridget met at just six years of age in Dublin through their shared Irish dancing school and quickly became dance partners and fierce competitors. The pair was married in January 1972, they made the decision to go on a big adventure and left Ireland in June the same year, arriving at Port Melbourne in July. Dermott O’Toole started working for himself in the jewellery industry in 1983 and in 1987, the husband and wife team opened up their first shop on High Street on Hastings. Continued on page 3

We were both trying to fight him off.” Gavin Perry had knocked Dermot to the ground, but was yet to deliver the fatal blow. “I wasn’t strong enough to pull him off Dermot and he could have left the shop but he actually moved around Dermot, who was defenceless on the ground,” Mrs O’Toole said. “He moved around him to get a better aim at him.” The last words Mr O’Toole said to his wife after Gavin Perry left the store were “Call an ambulance, I’ve been stabbed.” However, Bridget O’Toole remembers the man that her husband was. The man who loved to dance, loved to read, and loved his family and

On a cold winter night Dermot O’Toole gave his life to protect his wife Bridget, when their Hastings jewellery store was robbed by Gavin Parry in 2013. Now, almost four years later, Mrs O’Toole, who currently lives in Lynbrook, will be accepting a posthumous Star of Courage bravery award on behalf on her late husband. “I heard they were considering him for the award, but officially found out he was receiving it on 16 December 2016,” she said. “It was very emotional; I was out having an eye test so I couldn’t drive and I was sitting in a corner having a coffee and just bawled my eyes out.” “I was very emotional when I heard it, and so moved that he was considered for the award.” The O’Tooles had been running their jewellery store on High Street for many years, but had only recently moved into a new building when they had what seemed like a normal visit from a man and his girlfriend looking to buy some jewellery. “Little did I know that we were being set up,” Mrs O’Toole said. About 5pm that same day, Friday 12 July 2013, Mrs O’Toole elected to respond to the door buzzer instead of her husband. What she found in the shop was Gavin Perry, erratic and armed with a knife. “I got up thinking he was a customer, but when I walked

Needled on safety forum to parliament were spotted sending tweets from Kelly’s Motor Club Hotel in Cranbourne. Ms Peulich equated this to campaigning for a safe injecting room in Casey. Fiona Patten from the Sex Party disputes Ms Peulich’s comments, saying she has not got her facts straight. “I don’t know what Inga’s been smoking, but she’s clearly spaced out on her facts,” Ms Patten said. “The Herald Sun visited Kelly’s in Cranbourne as part of their ‘pub test’ and asked about my bill. The Australian Sex Party just tweeted what was in the paper - which Inga clearly didn’t read.” In her address to the legislative council, Ms Peulich cited the rising
By Victoria Stone-Meadows An Opposition MP has called on the Victorian Mental Health Minister and Fiona Patten from the Sex Party to hold a community safety forum in Casey. Member for South-Eastern Metropolitan region Inga Peulich raised the idea during a parliamentary adjournment debate on Thursday 23 March, calling on Minister of Mental Health Martin Foley to lead the establishment of the forum. Her call comes following the deferment of a bill to establish a medically supervised safe injection facility in Richmond to the Standing Committee on Legal and Social Issues on which she is a member. Ms Peulich claimed Members of the Sex Party who introduced the bill
crime rates in Casey as a reason to reject a safe injecting facility in the area. However, overall drug offences across the City of Casey went down 8.6 per cent between 2015 and 2016. In that time, trafficking and drug dealing dropped 25 per cent and cultivation and manufacture of drugs fell 50 per cent. Other crimes such as theft, robbery, and burglary have increased in that time, and Ms Peulich attributed this increase to drug use in the area. Ms Peulich said she would like to have the community safety forum before the standing committee delivers its conclusions on the bill regarding a medically supervised safe injection facility. “I am confident that the community
would reject this white flag response,” she said. “This position on the scourge of drugs and callous disregard of the harm it causes drug addicts - who need access to rehab beds and professional help to get off drugs - their families and the harm caused to the community is not a position that is widely held by ordinary people or the Casey community.” “Drug injecting facilities are also in conflict with our international obligations and multi-pronged national drug strategy which focuses on harm minimisation, demand reduction and supply reduction.” Ms Patten has welcomed Ms Peulich’s calls for a community safety forum in the area, and maintains a medi-
cally supervised safe injecting facility is the best way to address this. “Immediately after Inga’s speech to parliament, I welcomed any conversation about drug law reform strategies and benefits to the community,” she said. “Rather than ending the needle nightmare residents are facing, she’s happier dreaming up stories about the Sex Party.” “Inga needs to wake up and listen to the evidence. There are significant drug issues in her own region, and residents deserve policies that work, rather than more of the same, which has made no impact.” Attempts to contact the Minister for Mental Health Martin Foley for comment were unsuccessful.
Shower service is tapped into cash By Victoria Stone-Meadows A charity organisation based in the south-east that gives homeless people the opportunity for a hot shower has been awarded a grant to expand the size of its operation. Clean as Casper applied for the Dreams for a Better World grant from Sunsuper in January and found out on 9 March that it had received the $25,000 top prize. Co-founder of Clean as Casper Steve Winterton from Kooweerup said he and his team were happy just get to the final round of grants, let alone win the top prize. “We were happy just to get in the grand finale - we were really excited about that,” he said. “Then to win was just ridiculous, they read the winners in reverse order so when we were announced as winners we couldn’t believe it.” Clean as Casper team members

From front page “It was great,” Mrs O’Toole said. “He was such a great character, very funny and such a hard worker and so dedicated.” “He just loved serving his community and people would come in just to chat to him and he would cheer them up.” Mrs O’Toole said her late husband’s sense of humour was never dulled by tough times and his light shone though the deepest dark. “He never felt sorry for himself - he had a stroke in 1996 and had to go through rehabilitation and speech therapy to learn to walk and talk again,” she said. “He joked all through it, ‘You might
be sorry they taught me how to speak properly again.’” Mrs O’Toole said while the pain of losing her husband who she was so close to would never leave her, she cherished the memories they made together. “He was a very humble man - he never sought the limelight, he loved his family, his friends he loved his golf and world politics, he could tell you the name of every world leader,” she said. “With the tables turned, he would be suffering just as I am today because we were so close to one another.” “I miss him so much, life is horrible without him and I guess we are all going to die but not to die like this, nobody deserves to die like this.”

Mr Winterton said he will be using the money to upgrade the operation from a single portable shower on a trailer to a rolling en suite in the back of a truck. “We interviewed all our homeless clients and asked them what they really wanted from the service,” Mr Winterton said. “We are going with only one shower for privacy because we often cater for victims of sexual and physical abuse who may not feel safe and might need a bit more space. “We’ve got enough to buy our truck now which will have a bigger shower, a spot for hairdressing, as well as we are hoping to bring on a couple of volunteer nurses for health checks and free flu shots.”

A big turnout for carnival By Victoria Stone-Meadows The 2017 Casey Kids Carnival attracted more than 25,000 visitors from far and wide to Akoonah Park in Berwick on Saturday 25 March. With live performances, interactive games, rides and amusements, an animal farm, face painters, market stalls, food trucks, roving entertainment and so much more. The event saw families, carers and guardians of all backgrounds come together to share in the universal merriment of children. The carnival had not-tobe-missed appearances from
characters from the Trolls and Paw Patrol to entertain the crowds with shows on the main stage, and met with their fans on the day.The event also provided a platform for a range of community groups and organisations to showcase all the services and opportunities that are on offer throughout the city, and local businesses provided food and beverages for everyone to enjoy. Cancer walk is afoot

A Narre Warren South woman will be walking 200 kilometres over 10 days to raise money for research into all different types of cancer. Janet Halsall has been raising money for the Cancer Council through the Relay for Life for almost 10 years, but has decided to do something a little different. Each day of the walk will be devoted to a different type of cancer, and Ms Halsall is hoping to raise about $30,000 for cancer research. Ms Halsall decided to embark on this massive journey after being inspired by Federal Minister for Health Greg Hunt. “I joined Greg Hunt some years ago when he was doing a 500 kilometre walk around his electorate,” Ms Halsall said. “He does that every few years for a different charity each time, and I went out and did that in 2015, I thought it was a great idea, a real bringing together of the community.” Ms Halsall said she was a little over the hill to manage a 500 kilometre walk, and added 200 kilometres was a bit more realistic. “I will be walking around the City of Casey, not exactly travelling sequentially,” she said. “Each day there will be a community gathering and the location of the gathering determine where I end up at lunchtime each day.” While the main focus of the walk is to fundraise, Ms Halsall said there was also the aim of bringing the community together and sharing in each other’s experiences. “The main idea is to catch up with the community along the way at those events to hear from others about cancer and weakness and treatments and looking for community donations,” she said. The walk will take Ms Halsall to 25 suburbs in Casey from Cranbourne South to Lysterfield, and she hoped people would join her along the way. Janet Halsall’s Casey Walk for a Cure will begin on Saturday 8 April at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick, and will finish on Monday 17 April at the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens. A Clyde North man has been charged with attempted murder after an alleged axe attack on a woman at Fountain Gate shopping centre on Monday 27 March. The woman was taken to hospital in a serious, but non-life threatening condition after she was viciously assaulted a number of times by the man shortly after 10am. She remains in a serious but stable condition at The Alfred hospital. The man violently attacked the woman hitting her a number of times with the axe inside one of the shops at the shopping centre. While police cannot confirm the nature of the relationship between the man and the woman, it is believed the two know each other. Detectives have charged the 45-year-old Clyde North man with attempted murder and other assault-related charges. The man was taken into custody at the Narre Warren police and was refused bail at an out-of-sessions hearing at Narre Warren police station that night. He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 28 March. Police are looking to speak to a man who witnessed the attack who was wearing a fluorescent vest and standing next to the exit of the shop involved before police arrived. Police are appealing for this man and anyone else who witnessed the incident to come forward. On Monday 27 March, the Cranbourne/Berwick News shared the breaking story that a man had been arrested after allegedly attacking a woman with an axe in broad daylight at Fountain Gate shopping centre. Violence has been at the forefront of Casey for some time, but rarely is there an act of violence so brazen and horrifying as this. Family’s thanks for life By Victoria Stone-Meadows A young family from Botanic Ridge are celebrating the first anniversary of their son’s birth by fund-raising for the hospital that saved their precious child’s life. After seven or eight rounds of IVF, first-time mum Kylie Angwin was blessed with the gift of life - but complications from a short cervix would mean her child made an untimely arrival. On 20 April, 2016, Oliver James Angwin came into this world at a tiny 786 grams and 16 weeks early, at the Monash Hospital in Clayton. The first four months of Oliver’s life was spent in the intensive neonatal care unit of Monash Hospital and at times mother Kylie wasn’t sure her young child would make it. “When he was being born, we were told he didn’t make it before I delivered him,” she said. “An hour after that he had a heartbeat and the neonatal specialist resuscitated him.” “He had a rough time in the first few weeks of his life; he was ventilated, had many transfusions and tests, he spent 120 days in the Monash so for four months every day we going in and out to be able to see him and watch him grow.” Oliver’s premature entry into the world means his physical development is a bit delayed but defying the odds and having his first birthday hasn’t slowed him down. “When he came home he needed oxygen to assist with breathing, which he only just come off this week; he was 11 months old and breathing alone for the first time,” Ms Angwin said. “He’s great now, happy and active; he’s 7.5kg so he’s pretty much the size of a seven month old.”

The mannequin is designed for skills training in neonatal resuscitation with anatomical accuracy and a product feature set designed to focus on the
critical resuscitation skills required in the first 10 minutes of a newborn’s life. The family are raising the money through the Monash Health Foundation’s Everyday Hero appeal. Residents of the Belmond on Clyde estate have been told they will not be compensated for their time living in a new estate with no form of telecommunications. Residents had a chance to directly confront representatives from the telecommunication companies that had failed to supply them with phone and internet connections for over four months. Representatives from Telstra and NBN Co faced up to a group of about 30 angry Belmond residents in the office of Holt MP Anthony Byrne on the night of Tuesday, 14 March. Irate residents, who have been living for months without any fixed or mobile telecommunications services, shared their frustrations with the companies they felt had let them down. When residents first started to move into the estate in November last year, they were told NBN Co would have their phone and internet switched on by 1 December 2016. However, that date has been continually pushed back with residents now being told they can expect to have fixed line telecommunications in the estate by 7 May 2017. Telstra has said the most likely timeframe for a new mobile tower being constructed to cover the mobile reception deadspot will be the end of 2017. Both NBN Co and Telstra said there was no likelihood of residents receiving any compensation for their time with no fixed or mobile services. Residents shared their stories of being unable to conduct business or keep in touch with family and friends because of the lack of service throughout the estate during the meeting. Jenny, a resident of Belmond on Clyde, described the meeting as “terrible.” “The meeting was frustrating for the residents because we still weren’t getting any answers,” she said. “My heart sank when I heard a tower wouldn’t be built until the end of the year. I don’t think Telstra and NBN from a corporate perspective understand the severity of impact this is having on residents. “They are still hiding behind a corporate wall and I don’t see any evidence of expediting or putting their money where their mouth is to try and compensate residents or make a genuine apology for the inconvenience and significant safety issues that they have caused.”

All kinds of sport sorts By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne’s first ever Super Community Sports Open Day gave local sporting groups and interested members of the community a chance to come together over the weekend. Sports clubs and potential future star athletes flocked to Clydesdale Square in Cranbourne on Saturday 18 March to find a perfect sporting match at the event hosted by Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre. Sporting clubs showed off what they had to offer on the day with the Cranbourne Junior Football Club, Soccer Time Kids, Aussie Hoops, Casey Fields Tennis Centre, Lyndhurst Football and Netball Group and N Sync Dance Academy all in attendance. Youth attendance in sport was the order of the day with young people from all over the Cranbourne and surrounding area dropping in to find their perfect sport group. NEW LIFESTYLE COMMUNITY IS GROWING THE secret is well and truly out - Clyde is booming with land snapped up as soon as it is released. Buyers are showing that they are keen to relocate to one of the many premier estates that are transforming the former farming district. In close proximity to Berwick, the Monash Freeway and the South Gippsland Highway, Clyde and Clyde North appeal to a range of buyers who are keen on the area’s rural ambience. The City of Casey and the State Government are keeping abreast of development in the area with major road works, new schools and new community infrastructure. In January Education Minister James Merlino visited the new Willandra Rise Primary School in Clyde North to welcome the school’s first intake of students. The new school, which will eventually accommodate 475 students, is a state-of-theart purpose-built educational facility with new technology and building designed to encourage learning and teamwork among students. The school joins Clyde Primary School which has been educating children in the area for decades. Other schools within easy reach of Clyde and Clyde North include Hillcrest Christian College, Rivercrest Christian College, St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Primary School, Casey Grammar School, Cranbourne East Primary School and Devon Meadows Primary School. St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School and the select state school Nossal High are a short drive away in Berwick. On the corner of Forest Drive and Heather
Grove is the new Selandra Community Place, a unique community hub providing the community with engaging and practical programs centred on health, wellbeing, social connectedness, local business and sustainability. The City of Casey is also overseeing the new Selandra Community Precinct, which is set to open in late 2017 to provide much-needed community infrastructure for the growing Clyde North area. Incorporating a new integrated community centre and town square, construction on this $6.6 million project is now underway. The ecologically sustainable integrated community centre incorporates a variety of multipurpose spaces including flexible halls, meeting rooms of varying sizes, a large foyer, exhibition space and a commercial kitchen. The town square will provide residents with an accessible and vibrant community precinct, proving for a range of outdoor community activities and events including an exciting public art collaboration with RMIT University. The new precinct will be located at 7-11 Selandra Boulevard, Clyde North, and will replace the temporary facility, Selandra Community Place.
Satellite cities such as Berwick are increasingly becoming employment hubs in their own right, with the 2011 Census indicating that 59.5 per cent of workers in the City of Casey also lived in the area. Employment opportunities are one reason the Berwick Waters development, a joint venture with Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia, is proving so popular. A recent block sale set a record for the estate of $550,000. While some residents make the one-hour train commute to the Melbourne CBD, many others choose to live and work in the area. Resident Kristy Lewis commutes just 20 minutes to Doveton for her work as a registered nurse while her Berwick Waters neighbour Virginie Jacquin runs her own hair and beauty business in Clyde North. “We love it here. It’s got beautiful surroundings and it’s where we want our kids to grow up,” Virginie said. “It’s very family-oriented here - there’s a lot of children and most of our children’s friends live here in the estate.” The highly industrialised Dandenong South is 16 kilometres from Berwick Waters and there’s direct freeway access to the Melbourne CBD.
The area’s lower cost of living contributes to labour cost savings of 11 to 16 per cent making it particularly attractive to business. An average of 60,000 residents per year move to Casey and neighbouring Cardinia, making it one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. It also helps that employment creation is a priority of the City of Casey, which recently opened a new facility designed to encourage and support local small businesses. In partnership with Waterman Business Centres, the Council’s Casey Cardinia Business Hub (CCBH) is for businesses seeking accommodation. One of the major road upgrades in the area, the sealing of Thompsons Road has kicked off significant demand at Meridian Estate. “The entrance to Meridian, Thompsons Road, was essentially a dirt road - now it’s a fully sealed road. “We’ll have first homes starting to be built mid-year,” Brown Property Group marketing manager Graham Nolan explained. The road network is a key connecting road for the corridor and will play a significant role in the expansion of the Clyde North community. “There are great opportunities for people to join this community. It’s starting to grow now and, obviously, there will be a lot of future amenities for people to enjoy,” Mr Nolan said. “It’s a beautiful area… a lot of it’s former farm land so it’s very undulating and there’s amazing views.”

Explore the scientific principles behind music, light, force and motion at the Antarctic Journey. From Saturday 1 April, the Antarctic Journey at the Nobbies, Phillip Island, will play host to a range of fascinating and interactive scientific experiences as part of the Science on the Move travelling exhibition, created by Questacon - The National Science and Technology Centre in Canberra. Science on the Move is a collection of 23 exhibits and 35 hands-on experiences that will engage both the mind and body in all things science. “Science on the Move lets visitors discover concepts such as electricity, magnetism and human senses in a fun, interactive way,” said education coordinator Kim Dunstan. Visitors can experiment with sound by hitting pipes of varying lengths with a rubber thong to play a tune, or make music using a row of bottles filled with different volumes of water and air, to produce different pitched sounds. Science on the Move explores key themes such as physics and biology. Visitors can determine the balance point of different shaped rods and everyday items like a broom, or lift blocks to gauge how heavy the blocks would feel on other planets in the Solar System. With a range of puzzles, visitors can also showcase their problem solving skills as they try to balance six loose sticks in mid-air on top of an upright stick, and working with space to manoeuvre four identical spaces into three. “We are really excited to host the Science on the Move exhibition and look forward to seeing the community enjoy all of the activities on offer,” Kim said. Suitable for ages eight and up, but with topics of varying complexity, Science on the Move will engage all ages about the wonders of science. Science on the Move will be open between 10am and 4pm from Saturday 1 April to Sunday 16 April. Admission is included with either a 4 Parks Pass or an Antarctic Journey entry ticket. Samantha steps up By Nick Creely “Once you exercise you never regret it.” That’s the very simple yet inspiring message from Pakenham mum and personal trainer Samantha Bond. The 32-year-old marathon runner has become a face of change in women’s fitness in Australia, helping motivate thousands of busy mums - and all women - make a positive change and make exercise a priority. She has been selected as one of 12 women in Australia to be an ambassador for the Running Divas, an online women’s fitness and health community that provides training, support, guidance to women who are looking to achieve their fitness and health goals. “It’s basically a women’s running community, and it's Australia wide - they offer nutritional ad-
vice and programs for anyone who has never run before or for people running ultra-marathons,” she explained. “They have social media and training programs in order to sort of support women to get out and run basically I am representing a brand for events coming up and helping out on the Facebook page and motivating women who are involved in the Running Divas.” As a working mum of a young child, Samantha understands why exercise can sometimes be forgotten, but said that strategies can ensure that it becomes a normalised part of life. “I have got a near two-year-old son, Rhett - I definitely know what it’s like for women who have young children and how busy life can be - I just schedule my exercise as appointments, just like I’d do with work meetings or other appoint-

The club has further strengthened its ties with Melbourne, changing its name, its logo and essentially its identity to take the next step in their journey. Last season the Demons relied far too heavily on the injection of their AFL-listed players, but as the Demons
get stronger in the AFL, it’s likely they will have a major say in the team’s wares for 2017. The loss of Oscar McInerney leaves a gaping hole, while a bunch of delisted or traded AFL players such as Lynden Dunn, Viv Michie, Chris Dawes, Dean Terlich, Matt Jones and Jack Grimes will not turn out for the Dees after being delisted from the AFL side. But the club has been able to identify this issue, and have made significant inroads in securing the future of the club. A heavy influx of TAC Cup recruits are noticeable, with Tommy Glen from the Stingrays among the graduates expected to make a successful plunge into the VFL. They have also added significant midfield depth with former midfielder Mitch Gent returning to the club after a stint with Noble Park, while fellow Bull and highly-touted youngster Ben Giobbi will have a crack at VFL. In terms of coaches, there are few better and more credentialed than Justin Plapp. A highly rated operator and tactician, he will also coach the VFL state side in 2017. There is definitely enough talent on their list to push for a finals spot, but the likely injection of players such as Sam Frost, Jake Spencer, James Harmes, Jack Trengove, Dean Kent, Tim Smith and Declan Keilty from the AFL squad, who are likely to spend larger chunks of the season in the VFL, should push them into a strong position. Players such as Mitch Cox, Aloysio Ferreira, Dylan Gordon and Todd Vander Haar enter their second VFL seasons and are expected to take the next step. Daniel stars in grand final By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 GRAND FINAL REVIEW Mordialloc can lay claim to being the most dominant Turf 1 side of the last decade, after downing Heinz-Southern Districts to hold their hands on their second piece of silverware in three years. And it took one of the most special individual performances in Turf 1 history from Ian Daniel to achieve it, with the Bloodhounds all-rounder dominating proceedings. With the first ever stand-alone grand final in the association’s history, crowds flocked to Arch Brown Reserve in Berwick to see history in the making. Mordialloc elected to bat on a belter of a deck that had a little bit for both batsman and bowler, and from the outset it was obvious runs were gold, and that anything over 200 would be difficult to chase. Daniel, who has played some destructive knocks throughout the season, was on-song early with some piercing stroke-play, and raced away early to set the tone for the Bloodhounds. But when he was dismissed for a glorious 62, which included two massive sixes, the score was 3/81, such was his dominance. This lifted the tails of the Cobras’ bowlers, led by the swinging dynamo Kaushyla Weeraratne (3/61) and the ever slick Michael Davies (2/39), who then wrestled back control over the contest to leave the Bloodhounds at 6/129. He took out the stumps of Trevor Davies (4) to leave them 7/101, a brief period of resistance ensured the Cobras would then reach 7/138, before Chathura Athukorala (1/22) snared Rob Davies and then instantly Daniel skittled Chadwick Van Estrop’s stumps to cap off a memorable day. Daniel finished with the astonishing figures of 8/43 off 27.2 overs, and a total of 15 wickets and 68 runs across two finals. It mirrored and probably outshadowed some of the legendary grand final performances of the past, such as Cam Dinger’s 6/44 in the second innings of the 2015/16 decider, Yoshan Kumara’s 9/60 in a losing cause in 2013/14, and Daniel Watson’s whirlwind 188 not out in 2012/13. He was duly awarded the Man of the Match, in a performance that needed to be seen to be believed.

TAC CUP REVIEW - ROUND 1 A powerful first-quarter has seen the Dandenong Stingrays overcome a late Gippsland Power surge at Morwell Recreation Reserve on Saturday. It all came down to work-rate for both sides, with the Rays peppering the attacking-50 and utilising their abundance of tall forwards, and took a vital 17-point lead into quarter time. And just when it looked like the Power were climbing back into the contest via some impressive goals by youngster Will Broadbent, the Rays flexed their muscle and eventually climbed out to a 33-point lead at the major break. The Power then worked their way back into the contest through a duo of goals from Will Stephenson, while the class of Sean Masterson began to shine through in defence with some strong intercept marks. Heading into the last term, the Rays held a relatively safe 25-point lead, and just needed an early goal to seal the deal. But if there was any sneaky hope of a shock win for the Power, it was quickly evaporated when young gun Dylan Morris kicked two impressive goals within five minutes of the last quarter to stretch the lead out to 38-points. ASX takes market share By Alistair Kennedy Mitsubishi ASX is the smallest but biggest-selling of the Japanese carmaker’s Australian 4WD/SUV range. On sale since early 2010 it’s been a major success for Mitsubishi, consistently sitting among the top three or four sellers in the highly-competitive compact SUV market segment and just pipped at the post by Mazda CX-3 for top spot in 2016. The appeal of vehicles such as ASX lies in their functionality with a tall, square design that provides a higher than normal driving position and practical rear storage space. The choice of the name ASX caused a few chuckles initially because, although it’s an abbreviation for Active Sports Crossover, it’s also the one used for the Australian Stock Exchange. The ASX name is used in Europe while in the United States it is sold as Outlander Sport and in Asian markets as the RVR. Like most of its competitors ASX is aimed more at on-road use than tackling the Aussie bush, although it does come with the option of all-wheel drive and so can be used on dirt roads, forest trails and the like. We’d recommend taking up the full-size spare wheel if you’re looking at off-road driving. Two equipment levels are offered,

The new Mitsubishi ASX is a neat and well-priced SUV / hatchback crossover. badged LS and XLS both with either 2WD petrol or AWD diesel. Mitsubishi ASX was given an upgrade in late 2016 with a number of styling and functionality changes. The most obvious of the exterior tweaks is a new grille that uses the Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield that has previously been used on ASX’s larger siblings, Outlander and Pajero Sport.
