Boost for racism By Casey Neill A Harmony Day hate-speech shock has Greater Dandenong residents fearing a rise in racism. Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act currently makes it unlawful for a person to insult, humiliate, intimidate or offend someone on the basis of their race or ethnic background. On Tuesday 21 March, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced plans to remove the words ‘offend’, ‘insult’, and ‘humiliate’ and replace them with ‘harass’. Omid Cultural Association president and refugee rights advocate Hayat Rahimi said the proposed change would make it harder for him to work against discrimination. “It’s really frustrating because that actually gives the opportunity for One Nation, for ex-
ample, or other people who try to discriminate against, for example, refugees or other groups, to attack more,” he said. “Refugees being new to the country, especially people wearing hijab walking to school, they’ve heard that people said to them ‘terrorists, go back to your country’.” Bruce MP Julian Hill said he was appalled at the proposal. “The Government cannot say what kind of racist things that they want people to be allowed to say and why would these changes it would somehow be OK to humiliate someone because of their race,” he said. Last December he joined with Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus and Hotham MP Clare O’Neil to host about 120 people at a forum on the issue in Dandenong. “We’ll continue to fight these changes every
step of the way and, hopefully, they die where they should, in the Senate,” he said. Mr Turnbull also announced an overhaul of the complaints process. “The legitimate issues around frivolous complaints should be addressed through changes to the processes for handling complaints, and Labor backs those changes,” Mr Hill said. Mayor Jim Memeti said Greater Dandenong was the most multicultural city in Victoria and possibly Australia. “I’m disappointed to hear that the Federal Government wants to continue to make changes to 18C,” he said. “We have a lot of residents who fear that making these changes could make it worse for them. “Why change something that’s not broken? “By making changes it could make it a bit more difficult for residents in our city.”
At their Monday 23 January meeting, Greater Dandenong councillors - with opposition from Cr Tim Dark - agreed to acknowledge the importance of protections afforded by the Australian Racial Discrimination Act and write to all local federal MPs about the issue. “This is a natural extension, I feel, of what this council does in the multicultural space,” Cr Blades said. “It’s very important that we don’t in any way eradicate what makes people feel safe. “People feel safe with this protection, they won’t feel safe without it.” Cr Sean O’Reilly said the law as it stood “does not inhibit free speech”. “It just inhibits speech that is specifically designed to promote hatred and ignorance,” he said.

Fallen redgums parked By Casey Neill Trees removed to make way for the elevated rail in Noble Park are popping up across the municipality. The Journal reported last August that the community was reeling following shock news that dozens of decades-old river red gums and several other trees on Mons Parade, between Heatherton Road and Briggs Crescent, would be removed. The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) said at the time that river red gums were not suitable for transplanting. So the project team is storing logs that will be incorporated into the new parkland that will be created under the raised rail line. The council also received several logs which city planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said have established new habitat in bushland areas around the city. “It is also investigating the possibility of using
some of the logs to create new park furniture, interpretative signage and artworks,” he said. It worked with Greater Dandenong Council to salvage and relocate various native plants from within the rail corridor, including donating several to not-for-profit nursery Greenlink Sandbelt in Clayton South. The LXRA team also harvested seeds from river red gum trees along the rail corridor and donated them to the council. LXRA project director Brett Summers said those seeds would also be used in planting in the new parkland. “It makes sense for us to harvest and propagate seeds from this area to make sure the new trees we put will have the best possible chance of thriving in this local area,” he said. “By elevating the rail line between Caulfield and Dandenong we will keep nearly 1900 more trees in the rail corridor than if we had removed the level crossings by building a trench.”
A 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on a bus from Dandenong to Doveton last month. Police are appealing for help to identify the man responsible and believe the incident could be linked to an assault in Carnegie Police are searching late last year. for this man. In that case, a 21-yearold woman caught a train to the city from Murrumbeena about 5pm on Sunday 20 November. A man boarded the train at Carnegie Railway Station and sat next to the victim before sexually assaulting her between the Carnegie and South Yarra railway stations. Police believe the offender got off the train at Flinders Street Station. They believe the same man followed a 14-yearold girl from Dandenong Railway Station about 3.50pm on Thursday 16 February. He boarded the same Route 845 bus and sat next to her before sexually assaulting her. Police believe he got off the bus at Linden Place, Doveton. On Friday 24 March, Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives released images and CCTV footage of a man who might be able to assist with their inquiries. He is described as aged in his early 50s with a medium build, dark skin and greyish facial hair. He was wearing brown pants, a brown shirt and a light-coloured hat, and was carrying a back pack. Suspicious fence fire probed

A fence between two Dandenong homes was smouldering for up to two hours before CFA crews were called to extinguish the fire about 10.30pm on 17 March. Police said the fence on Belfort Street appeared to have been set alight. The fire caused only minor damage and did not spread to the adjoining homes.

Two men hit in drive-by rampage: bail for driver By Cam Lucadou-Wells A woman has been bailed after being accused of deliberately running down two men during a repeated series of drive-bys in a Dandenong residential area. Nuakouar Gatluak, 20, of Patterson Lakes was charged with conduct endangering life, recklessly causing injury and making threats to kill. She told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 20 March that she had believed the three men had tried to car-jack her. This was corroborated by her passenger, a 16-year-old cousin, who said one of the men tried to open the door. The car allegedly struck two of the males as they walked in the middle of Sutherland Road, Dandenong, about 11.45pm on 18 March. One of the victims was hit by the driver’s side mirror and thrown into the air, another was collected on the passenger side and the third dodged the vehicle, police informant Detective Senior Constable Gabriella Markovics told the court. The victims claimed they’d first seen Gatluak lighting a crack pipe in a parked car in Lexton Av-
enue. One of them allegedly told Gatluak not to smoke drugs, and she then honked the car horn, loudly revved the car and drove at speed - striking two of the victims as they walked away. A screaming Gatluak allegedly did a series of Uturns and blockies in repeated attempts to run down the victims across a 150-metre area. “I’m going to f***ing kill you,” she said, according to the victims and two independent witnesses. During the incident, her cousin climbed from the front to the back seat and covered her eyes due to fright, Det Sen Const Markovics told the court. With screeching tyres, Gatluak again chased her victims as they fled back to Lexton Avenue. Her car overshot a corner, drove onto a nature strip and then reversed at speed along a footpath at the victims. The frightened males armed themselves with fence palings in a “futile attempt” to stop Gatluak, Det Sen Const Markovics said. During the continuing pursuit, she accelerated “excessively” and crashed into two vehicles parked on a nature strip on Sullivan Road. In her police interview, the accused admitted she drove the vehicle at the time and ran over a tall man
because he was “standing in the middle of the road,” the court heard. Gatluak allegedly denied smoking ice and drinking alcohol that night. She also denied she had continued driving at the victims several times but had driven around the block to see their faces. The court was told that Gatluak was found suitable for a Youth Justice bail program given her age, intellectual disability, vulnerability and having never before been in custody. She had agreed to a referral for substance abuse and mental health treatment. Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted that Gatluak had not been in trouble with the law since August 2015, had followed a past Youth Justice probation order and her risk of re-offending could be managed with strict conditions. Ms Spencer said of the men’s conduct “maybe not all is what it seems” in the “clearly contested” matter. Gatluak was bailed on a night curfew and on condition she didn’t drive or imbibe alcohol or illicit drugs. She is set to appear at a contest mention at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 12 April.
More tram orders in pipeline as Premier flags buy-in By Casey Neill A little patience will pay off for Bombardier in the May State Budget, Premier Daniel Andrews has hinted. He visited the Dandenong manufacturer on Tuesday 21 March to inspect the 51st E-Class tram to roll off the production line. It has new features, including a driver cabin designed with input from drivers and more handles and rails for passengers. The tram was the first of a $295 million State Government order for 20 trams, made in 2015 and following its previous order for 50 trams. “This project is 500 jobs. That’s the best way to look at this,” Mr Andrews said. “Five hundred livelihoods depend on these orders.” He said the final 20 would be finished by the end of June next year. “There’s a State Budget in just a few weeks’ time, and if everyone is just patient, I know a really strong future for this business, a strong future for these workers and the outstanding quality product that they have been turning out and will continue to for many, many years to come,” he said. “Bombardier are actually exceeding the local content requirements that we wrote into the contract, creating jobs and skills and opportunities along the way and creating a much better experience for the travelling public. “You can’t get a better outcome than that.” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said she’d been working very closely with Bombardier over the past two years. She’s also worked closely with the Premier, Mr Noonan and Transport Minister Jacinta Allan “to make the case for more work going to Bombardier”. “The work continues, and hopefully we’ll get some good news in the budget,” she said. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said Bombardier was supporting displaced automotive industry workers, as well as supporting
Trial for girl’s death A Dandenong man charged over a girl’s death in South Australia will stand trial in May. Shujaat Bahrami, 40, received the news at a hearing in Adelaide Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 23 March where his case was adjourned to Thursday 4 May. South Australian police charged Mr Bahrami with one count of causing death by dangerous driving, three counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving, and one count of aggravated due care over an eight-year-old Kilburn girl’s death in a Barossa Valley car crash last year. They allege he was behind the wheel of a Hyundai SUV that collided head-on with a Mitsubishi Pajero four-wheel drive on Duck Pond Road, Stockwell, just before 4pm on Sunday 2 October. The girl was in the Hyundai’s back seat and died at the scene.
Wanted man is on the run Anthony Scott is wanted over a firearms incident and is believed to frequent Dandenong. Police are appealing for public help to find the 31-yearold. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. On Tuesday 21 March, investigators released an image of Scott in the hope someone might have information on his current whereabouts. He is described as 178cm tall with a medium build, olive skin, short dark hair and a goatee beard. ments of our customer and passengers,” he said. “We’ve worked closely with our customer, special user groups and the public to collect important feedback which informed the design and functional enhancements of the trams.” Mr Dudgeon said Bombardier tapped into a partnership with Swinburne University and used a virtual reality mock-up. “The enhancements on Tram 51 will cascade not only to Tram 70 and beyond, but the initial fleet will be retrofitted with the various changes and benefits,” he said. “From design all the way through to the build, our team in Dandenong manages the entire process and could not be more proud of these vehicles.”

Newborn Annabella’s life was held in their hands By Casey Neill It was three days after Annabella’s birth that mum Emily Looker Salmon finally got to hold the newborn in her arms. The Dandenong 21-year-old knew something was going wrong with her pregnancy when her baby’s movement dropped, but it wasn’t until excruciating pain set in a few days later that doctors decided to deliver at 29 weeks. Annabella entered the world via emergency Caesarean at Dandenong Hospital on Tuesday 2 August last year. Doctors assess each baby one minute and five minutes after birth and record what’s known as an APGAR score based on five key signs. A score of seven or above is normal. “She was a two,” Emily said. Annabella was rushed to the Royal Children’s Hospital. “When we found out to the Royal Children’s I could actually relax,” dad Daniel Lish said. Emily said she didn’t quite understand what was happening to her baby. “But when we got to the Children’s Hospital they explained it to me like 300 times so it became
easier to understand what was going on,” she said. Emily and Daniel praised paediatrician Kevin Dunne, who they still take Annabella to for check-ups. “He would meet with me every Wednesday to explain what was going on,” Emily said. “We were in the Children’s Hospital for 12 weeks because she didn’t leave until she was term.” Annabella underwent dozens of tests and treatments during that time, and still requires oxygen due to scarring on her lungs. Emily recalled walking into Annabella’s room to find the hospital’s head doctor cuddling and comforting the infant, and spending her 21st birthday there. “The nurses took a print of her hands and feet and they made me a really cute present from Annabella, with a poem,” she said. Emily donated any coins she could get her hands on to the Good Friday Appeal when she was a child. “Every year mum and I always watch,” she said. “When I was a kid I used to love it because they had the Wiggles and things on there. “Now I love it because of the stories. “I never thought that we’d go there, that we’d experience it.
In Brief Affordable rentals disappear Affordable rentals are now in even shorter supply for low income tenants across Greater Dandenong new figures show. Department of Human Services rental data shows the number of affordable dwellings for low income tenants fell across Greater Dandenong in the year to December 2016. There were 34 fewer affordable properties available to rent than in 2015. The Department of Human Services data classified affordable rentals as ‘new lettings accessible to households on Centrelink incomes’. The drop in affordable property availability comes as new data showed an increase of 2.5 per cent to the median house rent in the December quarter. The median rent is now $410 per week.

Bandits hit pizza cash Three thieves armed with baseball bats held up a Noble Park pizza shop and fled the scene in a stolen car. Police said they entered the Heatherton Road store about 9pm on Wednesday 15 March. The 32-year-old owner was behind the counter when the trio entered and demanded cash. One man reached over and took about $500 cash from inside the register. They ran from the store and got into a stolen green Nissan Pulsar, which was taken a short time earlier from the Coles car park on Princes Highway, Dandenong. Police recovered the car abandoned in Greater Dandenong two days later. Two of the bandits are described as Caucasian and one as African. All three had covered their faces. Police say a hoon driver performed a burnout in front of an unmarked police car in Noble Park. The police vehicle was at a red light on Princes Highway at the junction with Corrigan Road about 9.45pm on Friday 17 March. A 39-year-old man allegedly sped off from the intersection under heavy acceleration but was intercepted shortly after. Police performed a preliminary breath test on the driver and a subsequent evidentiary breath test. It’s alleged the man blew 0.187 while on a zero alcohol limit licence condition. He was bailed on six charges for a court appearance.

No end in sight on strike Workers at Fletcher Insulation in Dandenong have notched up more than a month on strike. Australian Workers’ Union’s Victorian secretary Ben Davis said they were offered an enterprise agreement (EA) that would slash conditions, raise serious safety concerns and offer no pay rises for the next four years. “Production was up 20 per cent in the last quarter of last year, and yet only weeks later these workers are told they are not worth a pay rise for four years, and the conditions under which they have worked for so long will be done away with,” he said. “It is unfair, it is illogical and it is impossible not to arrive at the conclusion this is an ideological battle.” Formal employment agreement negotiations for workers at the Dandenong glasswool plant started on 15 August last year.
“Many of the 90 workers have been employed at the same site for more than 30 years, dating back to the days when it was ACI Glass,” Mr Davis said. “In the years since it was taken over by New Zealand-based Fletcher, it was business as usual until the latest EA negotiations. “The Fletcher wishlist includes increasing working hours from the glass industry standard of 35 hours a week, and completely removing minimum manning levels from the agreement, which is a serious safety issue. “There are other matters such as the unlimited use of casual workers, which raises concerns about job security, and drastically reduced provisions in the event of redundancy.” Mr Davis said the AWU had “met a brick wall”. “Negotiations are about give and take, but in this case Fletcher is only interesting in taking,” he said. A spokeswoman for Fletcher Insulation said the
company would like to continue to have constructive discussions with the AWU and was committed to developing a new employment agreement in good faith. She said the primary concern remained protecting Australian manufacturing jobs by ensuring Fletcher was reliable, flexible and fair. Fletcher Insulation is 18 months into a marketbuilding, productivity and efficiency improvement program to strengthen the business that will enable a long and sustainable future for the plant, the spokeswoman said. Fletcher Insulation general manager Justin Hollis said finalising the EA was important to customers, employees, suppliers, shareholders and the wider Australian community. “We want to protect Australian manufacturing jobs by ensuring we are reliable, flexible and fair so we promote a sustainable Dandenong plant,” he said.

A Dandenong North man was choked and punched outside his own home before thieves stole his mobile phone. The 24-year-old arrived at his Sherwood Crescent address about 8.30pm on Friday 17 March. He told police he heard a loud vehicle revving a few doors down and walked outside to see what was happening. A black Holden ute approached and stopped in front of the victim. He told police that a passenger got out and pushed him to the ground, onto the nature strip. The victim said his attacker choked him and demanded his phone, then punched him to the face when he handed it over. The thief got back into the car and left the scene. The victim suffered minor injuries. Police said the man was described as MiddleEastern, about 180 centimetres tall and aged in his early thirties with a solid build. 22 March 1917 Dandenong Red Cross Society A garden party was held on 10 March at Roseneath, the residence of Dr and Mrs Langley, given by the committee of the Dandenong Red Cross branch to the workers of that society. There were about 200 present and the Dandenong brass band played during the afternoon. Mrs Skene gave an interesting address on Red Cross work and urged those present, if possible, to double their efforts. Afternoon tea was handed round. The request for each guest to bring a khaki handkerchief for the soldiers was liberally responded to, 219 being received.
20 March 1967 Adding a touch of glamour First on the Journal’s list of test cars from Volkswagen was the familiar 1300 Beetle. To add a touch of glamour to this model, the company has included new interior trim and white wall tyres. Test driving the deluxe from the plant at Clayton, the snappy acceleration in first and second gears was amazing. The price is $1868 (inc tax), top speed 79MPH.
20 years ago 31 March 1997 Priest ‘denied fair trial’ A priest says a report in the Journal has “seriously compromised” a fellow priest’s right
to a fair trial. Last week’s report was based on a press release issued by the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne and concerned Father Peter Searson, who has been relieved of his duties at the Holy Family parish in Doveton by the Most Reverend Dr George Pell. Father Searson, 73, has been asked to answer questions put by an independent inquiry investigating claims of sexual abuse by clergy and lay people under the control of the archdiocese. In a letter to the editor, Farther Michael Shadbolt, parish priest at St Kevin’s in Hampton Park, said the article had listed allegations against Father Searson, none of which had been tested in a court of law. (The Journal did not list allegations against Father Searson. However the archdiocese described them as ‘serious’).
5 years ago 26 March 2012 Sustainable opportunity It’s not easy being green but Dandenong is the ideal place for a clean technology hub, say clean business chief executive Peter Voigt. A speaker at the ‘innovation showcase’ held this weekend, Mr Voigt says there may be little choice. “The big global challenges ahead are energy and water,” he said. “We need them to stay alive and feed ourselves. So industries have to plan to be environmentally sustainable.” He says that won’t change the fact that manufacturers will still be under “immense pressure” under the impending carbon tax regime.
Work and growth bring strength Victoria has gone from having the highest unemployment rate on mainland Australia to being the fastest growing economy in the nation. We are building critical infrastructure and delivering vital services for Victorians. With each project, we are creating jobs. While Victoria as a whole has the highest employment growth in Australia, growth is never evenly spread. Some communities experience higher unemployment rates than the state average and more complex challenges to overcome. This includes Dandenong and Doveton - places that have been the engine room of Victoria’s economy for decades, but have more recently fallen prey to a changing economy. We cannot forget about them. It has been with great pride that I have served as state MP for Dandenong for the past two years. In that time I have advocated passionately for local jobs and the growth of local industries. Jobs mean more than just income; they are a solution to most social challenges.

Higher rates of employment mean more people are engaged with their community. This has a positive effect on mental health, drives down crime rates, substance abuse and family violence. Jobs change lives and strengthen communities. Recently I announced the Dandenong and Doveton Community Revitalisation Project, a $500,000 employment initiative targeting disadvantaged jobseekers in our local community. The project is delivering a number of initiatives to connect local people with local jobs. It is expanding the One Percent Project to encourage local employers to recruit more of their

workforce from our local community. This builds on a number of other projects I hope will have a local benefit. Projects like the Jobs Victoria Employment Network (JVEN) which specifically targets those who face complex barriers to employment, including refugees, long-term unemployed, disengaged youth, people with disabilities, public housing tenants and Aboriginal Victorians. The last Victorian Budget included $12.4 billion in job-creating infrastructure, $116 million to establish 10 new tech schools, record investment in our education system and continued investment in TAFE. We need to give young people the skills they need for the job they want and invest in local projects to attract people and jobs to the Dandenong region. The Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative is a prime example of this. This $290 million project is restoring Dandenong as the capital of Melbourne’s south-east, delivering a variety of projects to enhance Dande-

nong’s appeal as a place to live and work. With each project, new and continued job opportunities have been created for locals. The initiative has seen the reinvigoration of Lonsdale Street and surrounds; a new Government Services Office, Australian Tax Office and council office; $22 million Quest apartment complex; and a new $25 million regional headquarters for the Salvation Army. And there is more to come. We are also removing five level crossings in our local area. The removal of the Noble Park level crossings is not only facilitating easier and safer access to our community, it is creating 2000 jobs. It will open up access to the Douglas Street shops and boost economic activity. The removal of the Abbotts Road and South Gippsland Highway level crossings will assist in the movement of local freight and local workers, improving business productivity. We still have work to do, and I’ll keep pushing hard for local jobs.

School loves family ties By Casey Neill Silverton Primary School is more than a school to those who’ve attended and taught there. The Noble Park North school is a family and the ‘family’ staged a huge reunion to celebrate its 40th birthday on Wednesday 15 March. Current students organised activities such as lucky dips, hair colouring and mini games. There were rides, photo displays, video presentations and plenty of balloons and cake. Denae Vines attended the school, did work experience and her teaching rounds there, and now teaches there full time. Her daughter Tahlia, 6, is a Silverton student. “My mum being a teacher led me to that career,” she said. But Denae’s Grade Prep and Grade 5 teacher Shirley Allison “inspired me to enter teaching”. She was partnered with Shirley during her teaching rounds. “When it came time to apply for jobs when I finished uni, this was the first job that I applied for,” she said. “It’s just meant to be. That was in 2007 that I started here. “I believe in Silverton and wanted Tahlia to experience what I experienced with other students.” Diane Rickard did her university teaching rounds at the school and her son Lucas, 5, started Prep this year. “I liked the philosophy behind everything,” she said. Lucas cut a Silverton birthday cake with the school’s first Prep, Louise Dalaris. Teacher Anastasia Kitharidis first taught at Silverton in 1989. “When I first came here, even though it was open plan, the teachers were putting up barriers,” she said. “There wasn’t a lot of shared learning between the teachers or team teaching. “Over the years there have been massive changes.” She said principals started placing trust in teachers and teachers started working together. “We were encouraged to research and look at different philosophies,” she said. school and its pupils and teachers, past and present. “I taught Denae’s sister and Denae came to the hospital when I had my children,” she said. Denae said: “We always call it our Silverton family.” Di Phillipson has taught at the school since about 1983 and her two daughters, Tailah and Kasey, attended the school. She taught a student named Kristy O’Connor when she was in Prep. “She came back to be a teacher and taught my
daughter Kasey in Prep,” she said. “I wouldn’t have sent them anywhere else. “I think they got the best education they could possibly have. “The children have got such a voice. “When they went on to high school, it was a natural progression for them to continue that. Holdens rally for record By Casey Neill A Holden world record could be set at a Dandenong fund-raising event. The all new Dandenong All Holden Car Show could bring up to 700 cars to Dandenong Showgrounds on Sunday 2 April. Guinness World Records officials will attend the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills event to judge whether enough cars take part to set a new benchmark for the most paraded Holdens. New event chairman John Ternel said a turnout of more than 300 cars should clinch the record. “A lot of the Holden shows will try to beat us,” he said. “We’ve just started something new in the car scene. “It will be interesting to see what happens after this.” Mr Ternel said this year’s show would be more family-friendly and would feature more awards and more stalls. There’ll be 12 different food vendors, face painting, a jumping castle and a visit from Myuna Farm. Experts will provide advice on everything from radiators to differentials and brakes. About 100 trophies will be handed out, including new awards for under-30s who often “don’t have big budgets” and for women. “It’s about a level playing field for everybody,” he said. Mr Ternel has two Holdens. “I’ve always been an avid Holden fan but about five years ago I bought a Nissan Patrol,” he said. “It was ready for the tip and, basically, someone said to me ‘why don’t you take it to a ute show in Berwick’.” The restored vehicle won first prize and “I got the bug”. He got sick of the ute scene and bought a VX Holden. “It’s an ex-Hells Angels car,” he said. “I bought it sight unseen in Bendigo. When I picked it up I didn’t really want it. “I spent a lot of money doing it up. I turned it

His 1992 VS ClubSport is in original condition. “She’s an old girl, she’s great to go cruising in,” he said. “It’s not too powerful, it just has that V8 rumble. “They were in the beginning of developing the computer systems for them. “They’re very easy to maintain and to tune. “The VS had damage on it when I got it as well.
“I decided to keep that as an original car. “These are now going to be an investment.” Mr Ternel said that a few years ago, a ClubSport would sell for $3000 to $5000. He recently saw an owner of one with black metallic paint offered $60,000. “If you can keep it original, you’re going to get good dollars for them,” he said. “These earlier plastic bumper bar Commodores are going to be the new Torana.” The Dandenong All Holden Car Show will open to the public at 9am. Entry is $5 for adults and free for children aged under 16 years.
Their number’s up, says police Disqualified drivers beware - Greater Dandenong police have you in their sights. The same goes for unlicensed drivers and those with unregistered vehicles, outstanding warrants or unpaid fines. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts said an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) operation on Princes Highway in Dandenong on 15 March was a sign of things to come. “There will be more and more ANPR operations in Greater Dandenong,” he said. “We’ve got a large amount of banned drivers that are utilising the road still. “They are overrepresented in trauma collisions. “Us detecting disqualified drivers goes some way towards addressing that.” Sen Sgt Roberts said the Casey Highway Patrol crew had a BlueNet car, which automatically scanned number plates whenever officers drove it. “We’re hoping for some more of those,” he said. “If anybody’s out there and driving around, they need to make sure before they get behind the wheel of a car that the car is registered and that they have a licence.”

Her daughter, Teresa, contacted the Journal to express her thanks to the good Samaritans. Gift for the cure By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong Rotarians made a $100,000 donation to prostate cancer research. The Dandenong South East and Dandenong Rotary clubs are meeting as one while an official merger is in the works. At their dinner at Dandenong Club on Tuesday 21 March, they presented a cheque for $100,000 to The Alfred’s radiation oncology director, Associate Professor Jeremy Millar. They raised the cash through Rotarian Neil Fullard’s House of Hope project. With help from dozens of volunteers and donations, he built a home in Mt Martha and sold it to aid a cause close to his heart. “He actively saved my life many, many years ago,” Mr Fullard said of Asst Prof Millar. “He’s kept me going for 16 years. “He’s saved a lot of other people’s lives, particularly men, over those years.” Asst Prof Millar is also on the board of Cancer Council Victoria and Cancer Council Australia
and involved in a research program at Monash University. “I’m lost for words about it,” he said. “Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Australia. “It’s the third most common cause of cancer death in men. “More men die from prostate cancer than women die from breast cancer.” He said surgery was most common treatment, and radiotherapy was used in 25 per cent of cases. He specialises in brachytherapy, which involves putting a radioactive source inside a cancer. “It can completely obliterate the cancer without giving side effects,” he said. “We cure at least 85 per cent of the men that we treat.” Asst Prof Millar said improving side effects was their aim, and the cash would help with trials to pinpoint treatment using an ultrasound machine. Mr Fullard also donated $10,000 to Rotarian Margaret Gunton for breast cancer research and treatment equipment.

Libraries promote cultural diversity in tots with many stories to share Parents were invited to bring their kids to library story time sessions in traditional dress or orange clothing to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week. The Dandenong and Springvale libraries host Toddler Time and Storytime each week. Attendees for the Monday 20 and Thursday 23 March sessions were encouraged to get into the Cultural Diversity Week spirit. The Victorian Multicultural Commissionorganised event coincided with the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Tuesday 21 March, known as Harmony Day. The free Storytime and Toddler Time sessions are designed to help children aged three and over to develop their imagination and vocabulary. They encourage a love of books and reading and help carers to learn songs, fingerplays and nursery rhymes that children can enjoy at home.

On Sunday 19 March he said goodbye to “everything above the shoulders” and raised $4080 for the Leukaemia Foundation. Mr Darcy held his World’s Greatest Shave event at Noble Park RSL. The day included auctions, raffles, live music, sausage sizzles, and people colouring and shaving their hair. “We had 10 people shave, including four women,” he said. “Three of them had long hair. We were able to keep their hair for wigs.” A friend of Mr Darcy’s has battled leukaemia for nearly three years. “I know what a great job the Leukaemia Foundation has done,” he said. More than 31 Australians are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma every day, and an Australian will lose their life to blood cancer every two hours. Science moves the senses Explore the scientific principles behind music, light, force and motion at the Antarctic Journey. From Saturday 1 April, the Antarctic Journey at the Nobbies, Phillip Island, will play host to a range of fascinating and interactive scientific experiences as part of the Science on the Move travelling exhibition, created by Questacon - The National Science and Technology Centre in Canberra. Science on the Move is a collection of 23 exhibits and 35 hands-on experiences that will engage both the mind and body in all things science. “Science on the Move lets visitors discover concepts such as electricity, magnetism and human senses in a fun, interactive way,” said education co-ordinator Kim Dunstan. Visitors can experiment with sound by hitting pipes of varying lengths with a rubber thong to play a tune, or make music using a row of bottles filled with different volumes of water and air, to produce different pitched sounds. Science on the Move explores key themes such as physics and biology. Visitors can determine the balance point of different shaped rods and everyday items like a broom, or lift blocks to gauge how heavy the blocks would feel on other planets in the Solar System. Visitors launch get-fit program Keysborough students are taking up the Premier’s Active April challenge. The initiative encourages people to commit to 30 minutes of physical activity each day during April to improve their health and wellbeing. Lighthouse Christian College launched the program at the school on Wednesday 15 March with a visit from several high-profile sports people. Their own Year 12 student Brandon Lauton was among them. He plays for the Melbourne Victory Football Club under20s squad. Market has world of good taste Dandenong Market-goers can feast their way around the globe on Sunday 2 April. More than 35,000 people attended last year’s World Fare and that number is expected to grow this time around. The annual event’s sixth incarnation will feature close to 50 food truck and street food vendors alongside live entertainment, children’s activities and carnival rides. Nations represented in the day’s culinary offerings will include Brazil, Uruguay, Cambodia, New Zealand, Belgium, Vietnam, Nepal, Spain, Argentina, India, Japan, Cyprus and Mexico. Every bit of construction gets us closer to a better train network. Buses to replace trains from Sat 1st April to Wed 5th April, between Dandenong and Pakenham stations. The Victorian Government is building bigger, better trains here in Melbourne as part of the largest transformation in our train network’s history. The new longer trains will mean more room for passengers and a better ride on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, but to run them we need to extend station platforms and upgrade power and signaling. Top high rise apartments By Casey Neill A $60 million apartment block is coming to central Dandenong. Places Victoria has signed a development agreement with Orion International Group for the 14-storey building on the Foster Street currently home to the Dandenong Pop-Up Park. It’s part of the $290 million Revitalising Central Dandenong project. The proposed development would include about 140 apartments, ground floor retail and office space, and car parking. “This development will offer more diverse housing options in an area that is close to public transport and the centre of Dandenong,” Places Victoria’s precincts general manager Simon Wilson said. “The development will also create employment opportunities during the construction phase and will stimulate economic activity following its completion.” Orion International Group deputy general manager Oliver Hu said Dandenong offered enormous potential. “Orion International distinguishes itself from

“Design and quality are highly valued and integral to each project to ensure each development achieves value for investors, residents and the surrounding community.” Other developments in the precinct include the recently opened Quest apartments, the Government Services Office, ATO building and the City of Greater Dandenong civic centre. The State Government initiated Revitalising Central Dandenong in 2006. It’s expected to attract more than $1.2 billion in private sector investment, create 5000 jobs and enhance Dandenong’s appeal as a great place to live, work and visit. Mr Wilson said more than $500 million in private investment had already been committed through the initiative. “Almost 40 per cent of land within the project boundary is now developed, under construction or contracted,” he said. There are 11 sites within the precinct still to be developed, primarily around Dandenong railway station and George Street.
Teens and young adults build skills, confidence for life By Casey Neill A simple shipping container is giving struggling students a leg-up and informing the community. Eighteen students aged 15 to 27 are carrying out construction, carpentry and painting in Dandenong South with guidance from mentors and supervisors from TRY Build. When they’ve finished transforming the 40-foot shipping container it will be moved to Noble Park and used as an information hub for the Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project. There’ll be internal stairs and a rooftop observation deck. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams checked out their progress on Monday 20 March. TRY Build falls under the umbrella of TRY Australia and is one of Australia’s longest-running social enterprises. It takes on students who are disengaged and struggling to cope with mainstream education, and refugees in the process of building a new life. They received on-the-job training alongside classroom learning to build their literacy and numeracy skills, and can work towards a recognised qualification in building and construction. “We’re giving these students real-life, on-the-job training to keep them engaged and build their skills and confidence,” Ms Williams said. “Their hard work will give locals a place to drop in and find out more about this massive project which will remove nine dangerous and congested level crossings, so we can run more trains, more often to Dandenong.” TRY Australia operations general manager Bill Bardsley said the students’ pride in the project, personal growth, and boosted self-esteem and confidence were priceless.

Making the Dandy switch By Casey Neill “After about 38 years in the industry I decided to try and see what I could do with myself.” So Henry Abraham set up Mica and Insulating Supplies Co (MISCO) in Dandenong South in July last year. He contacted local and overseas suppliers to ensure he could obtain materials, recruited staff, canvassed prospective customers and found suitable premises. “I’ve always wanted to be in the Dandenong area because it’s the hub of manufacturing,” he said. MISCO supplies electrical switchboard builders, motor repairers, electrical furnace manufacturers and more. “We make to order, we don’t carry stock.” He said the MISCO difference was getting back to customers quickly, supplying quality product on-time and being cost-competitive. “We’re much more proactive to customers’ requirements,” he said. “Every customer has different requirements.” Mr Abraham said more orders were coming in. “I was restricted for the first six months,” he said. “We picked up a fair few new customers “A fair few came to us through word of mouth.” The non-compete clause from his previous employer finished at the start of March. “We’ve picked up a lot of customers since,” he said. At the moment he has three staff members, but hopes that will grow to five in the coming weeks. On 6 December MISCO received a Greater Dandenong Business Grant at Dandenong Civic Centre alongside four other businesses. The grant included up to $8000 plus business mentoring and marketing valued at about $2000. “So far we’ve used the grant for the website, some for a guard on a machine and some for promotional pens and material,” Mr Abraham said. The Journal will profile each of the grant recipients.

SPORT Spoljaric: ‘Winning beats gongs’ By Nicholas Creely Cranbourne and Dandenong District legend Steve Spoljaric has claimed his fifth Alan Wookey Medal for the Turf 1 top-player, narrowly pipping his team-mate Matt Chasemore and Berwick all-rounder Jarrod Armitage for the top-gong on Wednesday 22 March’s presentation evening. The 40-year-old superstar continued on his stunning career in 2016/17, scoring 681 runs at 85.1, including three-centuries and a further 25 wickets with the ball. In what was an entertaining and somewhat bizarre acceptance speech, Spoljaric said that individual accolades mean nothing compared to the feeling of winning a premiership. “You don’t play for these things - last year’s grand final, that’s the fun part, the best part, and that’s with no disrespect to the umpires - the grand final we played last year, that was the highlight for me,” he said. Spoljaric described his training regime, or lack of, to the packed crowd. “Well, I live in Sale - it’s two hours away - to be honest with you, and this is just for a laugh, that Dandy West game (153 runs) was the first time I picked up a bat since last year’s grand final - that’s fair dinkum,” he said. But it could be the last time Spoljaric struts his stuff on the DDCA stage, with his involvements with greyhound racing becoming a major focal point in his life. “I’m not really sure - greyhounds are a priority, though, it’s quite busy preparing them all - I’ve never liked hard work and finally I actually have to do some, I am 40. “We’ll see what happens.” In what was one of the most interesting parts of his speech, Spoljaric was asked whether it was

Rangers show they still have plenty to celebrate By Nicholas Creely Although it was a disappointing finish to the season, there was every reason to celebrate for the Dandenong Rangers who held their awards night to honour some of the players who shone in an otherwise successful season. After both putting together equally impressive seasons on opposite ends of the court, soon to be sisters-in-law Sara Blicavs and Steph Cumming were duly awarded the MVP as the Rangers’ standout stars. Throughout the 2016/17 season, Cumming, 26, was stellar, averaging more than 17 points and four rebounds per match, as well as rating highly in the assists column with 3.3 per game. Blicavs was dynamic throughout the season, averaging 15.5 points, seven rebounds and a healthy 2.3 assist per game. Both were also placed inside the top-10 in the WNBL awards and can take their momentum into next season. In some other awards, Nat Novosel was awarded the coaches’ award in her return season at the Rangers. With injuries hampering her for the majority of the season, Novosel still had a major impact on the team’s wares with her professional attitude. Rising gun Amelia Todhunter was praised for her spectacular defensive efforts throughout the season, taking out the Defensive Player of the Year. Todhunter, the smallest player on the Rangers’ roster, was stellar against some of the league’s most damaging point guards, often shutting them down. Retiring legend and club favourite Jacinta Kennedy received her final award as a WNBL player, taking out the Janine Fielder Award for the team’s favourite player on-and-off court. It was another consistent campaign for Kennedy who regularly impacted at key moments throughout the season as well as helping assist the development of some of the club’s brightest stars. The Dandenong Rangers kick off their SEABL campaigns for both the men and women shortly, with both sides expected to be right up there in the championship mix. Devil of a time for Demons By Nicholas Creely With the start of the football season drawing closer and closer, the anticipation continues to rise at certain clubs. For Springvale Districts, 2017 is all about improvement. When analysing their recent form-line, it seems like the club is spiralling downwards. After finishing fourth back in 2013, the Demons have been unable to break into the finals, with wins becoming scarce and the ability to remain competitive a challenge for the club. But a new season brings new beginnings, with the club making a series of strong off-field and on-field moves to climb back up the Division 2 ladder. Sean Francis has joined the club as the new president, and has already brought forward some new and energetic ideas. Francis replaces Rob Burns after four years at the helm, and will have Ben Francis (Vice-President) and David Pearve (Secretary) as other off-field leaders around the club. In terms of their recruiting, they have managed to retain the majority of their senior list while also bringing in a plethora of exciting players. Among them is Steve Comino, a former Dingley player who had a breakout 2016 season with Lyndale after moving across to the club. He is a key-position player capable of playing on either end of the ground. Daniel Morris, 25, is also another big coup for the club. A 2016 senior premiership midfielder with Dingley, Morris will add hardness and a touch of class to their line-up. More of the club’s recruits will be featured in the Journal’s 2017 football preview on 3 April.

Seven set for leadership By Nicholas Creely Glittered with talent, the Dandenong Stingrays must have had their hands full selecting the leadership group that will lead them into the 2017 season. There must have been up to 15 genuine candidates that could lay claim to be a leader. And it’s come down to seven young men, all talented in their own right, who will get a crack at leading an exciting TAC Cup squad. The Rays have elected Josh Bateman and Oscar Clavarino as dual captains for the season, with both players strong leaders and key players for 2017. Clavarino, 18, from Berwick, is a highly-touted youngster sure to be on AFL radars come draft time, while Bateman, 18, from Langwarrin is seen as a natural leaders who is destined to flourish in an elite environment. The club has gone for key-forward Tom De Koning and Hunter Clark as the vice-captains both are AFL Academy members who have experiences and dealings with AFL clubs. The rest of the leadership group comprises of youngsters Luke Davies-Uniacke, an Academy member, Lachie Young, a talented youngster from Mt Eliza, and Tom Murphy from Somerville. In what is a well-rounded squad in 2017, several gun youngsters such as Mason De Wit, Bailey Morrish, Aiden Bonar and Reece Piper have all missed out on leadership positions, such is the depth within Craig Black’s arsenal. The Stingrays are well known to produce quality leaders and footballers, with ten members of the 2016 Stingrays already going on to sign with VFL clubs. The Rays kicked off their season with a clash against Gippsland Power on 25 March, with the match-report on the next page.

Strong start sees Barnes dominate with round ball By Nicholas Creely It’s hard to imagine a more dominant figure in the NPL than Brandon Barnes. When Barnes streams into goal, it is obvious that this is a player meant to dominate the round ball code. The Dandenong Thunder striker continues to make waves after another strong start to the season sees him surpass 50-goals since joining the club for the 2016 season. That means it has taken him just 31 games to reach the freakish milestone, with calls he is set to be scouted by A-League clubs sooner rather than later. In just 25 matches last season for the Thunder, Barnes scored 41 goals, including a whopping eight-goal effort against Nunawading FC - to put this into perspective, the next highest goal-scorer last season was just 19. The haul, which was spoken about in every adoring soccer corner in Australia is yet to be

Fairest winner, as well as the Golden Boot winner for 2016, and an integral part of the Thunder’s desire to reach the top-tier of Victorian Football. Barnes has had an interesting soccer journey, and right now in his peak, is one of the top-flight players playing the game in the state. Spending time in various football academies across the UK as a youngster, including Bristol City, Swindon Town and Southampton, Barnes was unable to break into the professional scene. During his travels around the world playing football, he has had a stint with Waitakere United in the New Zealand Football Championship, which eventually landed him in the hands of a stoked Dandenong Thunder out of George Andrews Reserve. Barnes’ Thunder has started the NPL2 season in strong fashion, currently sitting third on the ladder with an impressive start. Once again the Thunder is high on the ladder for goals scored, currently sitting second in that statistical category behind Melbourne City FC.

Pressure on new-look Bulls to maintain their edge By Nicholas Creely As one of the most powerful and successful clubs in the Eastern Football League, there is a certain expectation when it comes to Noble Park. With an ability to attract star players to their club, the Bulls have never really had to deal with loss - until now. Club legends Stewart Kemperman and Craig Anderson elected to join other clubs in search of a new challenge, as well as the loss of several other key players, and the side expected to run out against a highly-touted Rowville in two weeks’ time is going to be drastically different. Bulls coach Mick Foggarty anticipates some challenges this season, but is confident his club can rise to the occasion despite less depth then they are used to. “We’re obviously really excited about the year, and the vibe is really strong - we’ve lost a couple of key players which never helps, and we’ll be a bit skinny in the midfield and ruck departments,” he said.
“Our defensive unit and forward line are both really strong, and we can’t wait for round one against Rowville - they’ve recruited well and it should be a great game. “At least eight or nine new players will turn out against Rowville; it’s going to look completely different.” Foggarty forecast that the majority of the newlook side will come from a historically successful Under 19s premiership team from last year. “Our Under 19s obviously won the flag last year, and they’re going to get some terrific opportunities to play senior footy - if that means we take a bit of pain throughout the year we will, because we want to expose them to this level - I believe in a few years they will be super players,” he explained. “I played six of the Under 19s in the first-half of last year and they did OK, so I’m not sure on the short-term impact, and we’ve got some strong on-field leaders that will help them and enhance their development - you just have to be patient, that’s the key.
“At local level, I firmly believe you have to let players play with a little bit of flair, they will definitely bring that.” It’s been a hectic off-season down at the Bullring, with the return of Jackson Sketcher to the club, the recruitment of hard-nut Brenton Wells from Narre Warren, as well as Luke Nelson, a talented former Berwick player. But the biggest signing was former Bull James Gwilt, who had a highly successful 150-game AFL career. “We’re rapt James chose to come back to our footy club, he always said he’d come back when his AFL career finished - we understand he had some huge offers elsewhere and he’s stuck fat and come back - when you talk about culture, that’s what inspires the young guys to dream big and get onto the park,” he said. “Jackson Sketcher is back so we’re excited by that - we know what he brings and it’s exciting.” The Bulls kick off their season with a clash against Rowville on 9 April.

Stingrays turn off the Power By Nicholas Creely TAC CUP - REVIEW - ROUND 1 A powerful first-quarter has seen the Dandenong Stingrays overcome a late Gippsland Power surge at Morwell Recreation Reserve on Saturday. With both sides featuring a glittering of new and exciting young talent, it was the Stingrays that looked the goods early, spreading the Power with some impressive passages of play. Last year’s minor-premiers were full of run early, showcasing some impressive skill along the wings. It all came down to work-rate for both sides, with the Rays peppering the attacking-50 and utilizing their abundance of tall-forwards, and took a vital 17-point lead into quarter-time. And just when it looked like the Power were climbing back into the contest via some impressive goals by youngster Will Broadbent, the Rays flexed their muscle and eventually climbed out to a 33-point lead at the major break. With temperatures soaring on a hot day in Gippsland, fatigue began to set in for both sides, with players cramping left right and centre, as the game became more of a battle of attrition. The Power then worked their way back into the contest through a duo of goals from Will Stephenson, while the class of Sean Masterson began to shine through in defence with some strong intercept marks. Heading into the last-term, the Rays held a relatively safe 25-point lead, and just needed an early goal to seal the deal. But if there was any sneaky hope of a shock win for the Power, it was quickly evaporated when young gun Dylan Morris kicked two impressive goals within five-minutes of the last-quarter to stretch the lead out to 38-points. Taking their foot off the gas, the Power then kicked the last four goals of the contest to bring the margin back to 14-points with minutes to go, before the Rays iced the clock with some of their most experienced leaders.

DDCA TURF 1 - GRAND FINAL REVIEW Mordialloc and Heinz-Southern Districts were locked in a close battle on Sunday afternoon, in what has been an epic Turf 1 grand final. With the first ever stand-alone grand final in the association’s history, crowds flocked to Arch Brown Reserve in Berwick to see history in the making. Mordialloc elected to bat on a belter of a deck that had a little bit for both batsman and bowler, and from the outset it was obvious runs were gold, and that anything over 200 would be difficult to chase. Ian Daniel, the star all-rounder who has played some destructive knocks throughout the season, was on-song early with some piercing stroke-play, and raced away early to set the tone for the Bloodhounds. But when he was dismissed for a glorious 62, which included two massive sixes, the score was 3/81, such was his dominance.

Stuart Squires (54) then proceeded to play a true captain’s knock, despite the dominos regu-
larly falling behind him, grinding out some testing periods to lift his side to a highly competitive 220, with the last wicket falling on the last over of the day’s play. Hari Krishan (26) was also amongst the runs for the Bloodhounds, belting two sixes off Chadwick Van Estrop in quick succession. On the final day of the 2016/17 season, the Cobras were locked in an almighty battle, grinding out the first half-hour, with Squires and Chathura Athukorala steaming in and hitting relentlessly good lines. At the first drinks-break on day two, the Cobras were 1/22 off 15 overs, Adam Semmens back in the sheds after being trapped LBW by Daniel, needing a strong partnership to get back into the contest. Brad Downe and Rob Davies then set about building a partnership, reaching 1/40 off 33 overs heading into the lunch break.
