Goats kidnapped By Helena Adeloju A McGregor Road property in Pakenham South is sadly much quieter this week, with six of eight pet goats kidnapped in two brazen night-time thefts. Overnight on Friday, 17 March four goats named Ana, Elsa, Millie and Sunday were snatched. Two days later on Sunday, 19 March, the thieves struck again under cover of darkness, taking two more goats named Robbie and Gypsy. Owners Jessica and Michael Woolf said their family had been deeply distressed by the thefts.
“We are devastated and heart-broken. The children are so upset, as these were beloved family pets and breeding stock,” Mrs Woolf said. Jessica and Michael’s daughters Leah, Ella and Hannah remember the goats being born and helped to raise them. Michael said he was shocked at the callousness of the double theft. “I never thought someone would come and steal someone else’s animals,” he said. Mrs Woolf said there could be no other explanation for the goats disappearing. “They were tethered by the road to clear down the over-
grown grass, so someone had to actually come and physically take them,” she said. “Maybe someone took them to breed, or sell or sadly to eat.” Mr Woolf said that it was of great concern if the goats were taken to be butchered for their meat. “They had been treated with drench and five-way vaccines,” he said. “Therefore they are not fit for consumption until after a 14-day period.” The family have appealed to the public on the Pakenham Crime and Theft page “to keep an eye out in case neighbours suddenly turn up with goats,”
“or if you hear that someone is suddenly selling goats.” Mr Woolf said he had planned to set up a small cottage industry selling goat cheese, milk and soap, but that dream may never be a reality. “We hate to think where they have ended up, but we are hoping for a miraculous return,” he said. Senior Sergeant Nathan Prowd said police needed leads from the community to take their investigations further. “If anyone has seen anyone suspicious in the area at those times, please report it to police or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Brigade on fire races to glory Three years of hard work has paid off for Pakenham Fire Brigade, with the firefighters coming out on top at the 2017 Volunteer Fire Brigade Victoria (VFBV) State Urban Championships. The brigade’s running team were declared ‘C’ class state champions at the competition, defeating other firefighters from across Victoria. Participants were tested in 13 events based around firefighting, including a ladder race, discipline march, truck events and a hydrant race. The locals placed in eight of their 13 events, claiming five gold, and broke the record in the pumper and ladder event for five competitors. Preparation included training twice a week for the past three years and competing every weekend since November.

Our show was the go! By Bonny Burrows The weekend’s Parklea Pakenham Show was another smashing success. PB Ronald Reserve was transformed with an array of rides, entertainment and exhibitions and crowds came out in droves to enjoy the sunshine and day’s event. Show president Geoff Young
said as always the gumboot throwing, dog high jump and paper plane competitions were popular with crowds, while the younger generation enjoyed getting up close with a range of farm animals and reptiles. The inclusion of African drummers, Bollywood dancers and the Chinese Lion parade also proved popular with the crowds.
Mr Young said the Pakenham Show stood out in a sea of similar events due to its agricultural focus. “We really try to keep it that way, as an ag show and not a market. That’s what we are,” Mr Young said. He said there were plans to grow the show in the coming years, but the aim was “to keep it rural as much as possible”.

In a recent letter to adjoining residents in Bounty Way, developer Moremac Property Group stated there were “small amounts” of asbestos-containing material on “various parts” of the Alira site. It was found in fibre cement sheeting of former buildings and in illegally dumped building waste, it claimed. “We are aware there have been some
concerns in respect to dust nuisance. “We want to assure you that no materials other than the trees removed have passed through the mulcher.” The claim that third parties had illegally dumped construction and demolition waste on the land was not confirmed by any witness or video evidence, Ms Mathias said. A WorkSafe spokeswoman said the developer would use an independent occupational hygienist to plan and oversee the removal of asbestos material on the site. It would be undertaken by a licenced asbestos removalist. “WorkSafe will continue to meet with site management and make regular site inspections.”

“Limited” earthworks occurred on a developer’s land during a tree-felling operation that triggered an alleged asbestos scare among Berwick residents in late January, according to the state’s environment watchdog. Environment Protection Authority Victoria southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said officers had twice inspected the yet-to-be-built Alira residential estate site off Ward Road after the tree-felling and mulching works. “EPA officers have not observed tree felling activities ... however EPA observations on the land show that only trees appear to have been removed on the land. “Limited, if any, earthworks have actually occurred from which it is alleged dust impacted on residential neighbours.” Ms Mathias said tree-felling didn’t require a licence or permit from the EPA but laws generally covering clean air would apply to dust emissions. “Following recent inspections and discussions with WorkSafe, EPA has no evidence to support that works at site are not consistent with best practice.” Resident Mark Weaven, who found a shard of confirmed asbestos material in his backyard during the works, claims building debris was unearthed, exposed and dispersed by heavy machinery during the works. He said the debris should have been shielded by bollards or fencing at the time, or removed prior to the tree-felling. “Even after several weeks’ exposure to the weather, evidence is still visible where the machines’ buckets have been digging and scraping the earth where this material is situated. “If work had been carried out as per the WorkSafe guidelines ... the duty to

The potential trail link-
ing Noack and King roads through the ex-Hanson Quarries site was welcomed by local riders. Jess Gough, of the nearby Balmoral Equestrian Centre, said riding was growing in popularity but local horses were startled by cars and trucks that “fly down here”. “We don’t have the availability of those type of offroad trails and there’s a big need for it,” Ms Gough said.
“We have to ride on the road to get to the next trails. For young horses that haven’t been exposed to cars, it’s not worth the risk of taking them out on the road.” Gayle Joyce said the link had been desired for 30 years, with safe off-road horse riding tracks becoming increasingly rare. “The equestrian community’s access to riding areas is diminishing.
“As everything develops around us, we have to retain these areas.” The council report stated that on-road trails were most commonly on rural dirt roads with “minimal traffic flow”, with signage to inform road and trail users of the trails. “In order to achieve a safe and effective network, equestrian trails are required on roadside, on road and within open space.”

Casey Council’s quest for an expanded equestrian trail network will continue to make scarce use of the safest option - off-road, openspace trails, a council report has stated. About three quarters of Casey’s 79 kilometres of horse-riding trails are on a road or next to a road. Councillor Amanda Stapledon, in introducing a council report on the equestrian trail network on 7 March, said the potential mix of trucks and motorbikes with horses on the majority of trails was “not ideal”. She said ideally more trails and linkages were required on bushland. Of the 13 kilometres of new and upgraded trails built by Casey since 2011, more than six kilometres were on roadside trails and four kilometres were on roads. Just 2.5 kilometres - or about 20 per cent - were trails in open space. According to the report, the council plans 18 further equestrian projects spanning 29 kilometres - of which 4.9 kilometres will be in open space and 7.6 kilometres will be on roads. “The preference within the equestrian strategy is for trails to be located off-road in open space areas to provide the safest and most enjoyable riding experience,”

In a recent statement read out today to a group of Casey residents and ratepayers, former Casey councillor, Steve Beardon, informed us that, among other things, he has been accused by mayor Sam Aziz of breaching council’s code of conduct for comments made to other councillors, both in and outside of council. Steve Beardon is alleged to have referred to the Rise Up Australia Party secretary, and Four Oaks Ward councillor, Ms Rosalie Crestani, in unflattering terms. Her friend and fellow councillor, Ms Milla Gilic, claims she was shocked by Steve Beardon’s remarks. Well Cr Gilic and mayor Sam Aziz I’m shocked that you both apparently condone the policies of the Rise Up Australia Party and have had absolutely nothing to say about a councillor who belongs to a political party which opposes immigration and multi-culturalism. Casey is a multi-cultural community and deserves much better than councillors ideologically opposed to multi-culturalism or councillors who want to promote relations with an apartheid state! What really needs to be asked is this: does Casey Council support racism? A convicted paedophile has denied moving in with a Cranbourne family including a 16-year-old girl without reporting his change-of-address to police, a court has heard. Jason Griffin had been arrested at the address on 20 March - 18 days after failing to appear at a Frankston court and declining to return calls from police, informant Detective Senior Constable Darren Prestney told a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing that day. Griffin had been allegedly staying with a woman, her daughter and adult son every night for two weeks, despite being bailed to a specific Cranbourne West address. The daughter had allegedly been staying under the same roof for each of those nights, DSC Prestney told the court. When the son spoke to police, Griffin threatened to throw water at the son, then put his hands around the son’s throat and choked him, the informant said. As a registered sex offender, Griffin was required to report to police within one day of be-
ing in contact with a child and changing his address, DSC Prestney said. The accused had failed to promptly report to police several changes in personal circumstance in 2016, including a change in job, phone number and vehicle in June and losing his job in September, the court was told. He had then failed to appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 2 March for the alleged breaches, the court heard. Since then, Griffin had not allegedly returned the informant’s phone call, text message and voice-mail to his home phone number. DSC Prestney told the court he’d visited Griffin’s nominated bail address and left a message with an occupant on 11 March. After his arrest, Griffin gave a no-comment police interview, the court was told. Griffin had been placed on the register for 15 years after being convicted in the Victorian County Court in 2010 for penetration of a child under 16, the informant said. Sen Const Prestney said Griffin had been told of his
reporting obligations several times since his first annual interview with police in August 2013. Griffin told the court he’d been worried for his ex-partner and family when she was recently hospitalised and put in an induced coma with a “packed up” liver and kidneys. He denied he’d been living “anywhere else” other than his bail address. “I had so much going on, I forgot about court,” he said. “All of this has just rattled me because I didn’t know what to do. “She might not be able to make it. So if she dies, what happens there?” Magistrate Pauline Spencer said she wasn’t satisfied Griffin had shown cause for bail. “You’re saying you missed a court date due to this issue with your partner, but I don’t have confirmation of that.” Ms Spencer adjourned Griffin’s bail application, awaiting more evidence. Griffin was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 March.

The six occupants of the house were uninjured during the ordeal. Two of the home invaders have been described as Caucasian and the other two as African in appearance. The first Caucasian man was described as about two metres tall and wearing dark clothing. The second Caucasian male

Ms Norman said parking prices would be similar to the Casey Hospital car parking fees and there would be no emergency department at the new hospital when it opened. “There will be no ED in this stage. But the main strength of the clinic is the use of state-of-the-art technology such as computeraided visualisation software to demonstrate various treatments and their effects allowing patients to gain an in-depth understanding of the proposed treatment. There is also a flexible, no-fuss payment plan and costs of treatment and expected duration of treatment are always discussed beforehand, so there are no surprises. The much-anticipated redeveloped St John of God Berwick Hospital is set to open its doors in late 2017. The seven-storey building of a two-level underground carpark and five-level hospital services is located on Kangan Drive, Berwick, and is highly visible from many vantage points around the Casey region. St John of God CEO Lisa Norman said this visibility had led to many inquiries and questions from the community about the hospital. In answer to some of the most frequently asked questions, she said the new hospital would offer all of the services currently offered at the Gibb Street hospital, as well as new services. There will be 202 beds, an intensive care unit, eight operating theatres, a cardiac and vascular catheter laboratory, cardiac unit, six birthing suites, a six cot special care nursery and 350 basement car parks. Ms Norman said the current Gibb Street hospital would operate as usual during construction. “We will relocate all services currently located at Gibb Street to the new hospital in Kangan Drive,” she said. “The Gibb Street facility will temporarily close whilst it undergoes a redevelopment of its own and will be transformed into a rehabilitation hospital that will open in mid2018. “Our consulting suites and pathology laboratory will be relocated to the new hospital. This creates an opportunity for new services in this facility.”

Aren’t “Sales persons” all the same? We were a little dubious, reading previous reviews about Terri’s capabilities, did she get her friends to write them? Aren’t all agents just sales people? Surely NO agent is that good? How wrong we were! Touring Australia, decided it was time to sell in Victoria. How on earth were we going to achieve this, being so far away? We have sold properties before, what a hassle, and we were LIVING there. However, we put our trust in her, thank goodness. Her confidence reassured us, stating all the relevant info/costs we needed, prior to signing up, when where and how, & “I’ll have it sold within 2 weeks” (yeah right !) Well the property went on line 5pm Friday, Saturday was our open, and at 5pm, Terri rang to say she had achieved many thousands over our highest asking price. FACEY REAL ESTATE MARKS 100 YEARS Frances Angus Facey (1909-1984) A total of 100 years in any business is a milestone but in the ever-changing world of real estate, the achievement is rare. Last month we started our series on the 100 successful years of Frank Facey Real Estate and this month we focus on the next chapter in the history of this influential company. Frank Facey’s inspired decision to purchase his first real estate business in 1917 paved the way for the following generations of his family. The subsequent expansion of his original company now incorporates businesses in Dandenong, Mulgrave, Endeavour Hills, Berwick, Narre Warren and Pakenham. It was during the challenging days of the 1930s that Frank’s son, Francis Angus Facey, decided to join his father’s business. Together they formed a formidable team. Angus and his wife Adele were early pioneers in the Dandenong and Berwick area. They both earned the respect and admiration of their peers for their tireless community work throughout the region. By now, Frank’s predictions for growth in the South East were being realised and much of the area’s development was successfully transacted through the Frank Facey Real Estate business. Angus followed his father’s lead and became a Fellow of the Real Estate Institute of Valuers in 1936.
In 1956 Frank Facey’s Real Estate and Business Agency built a new, modern office at 254 Lonsdale Street Dandenong, where First National Hall and Partners still reside to this day. Dandenong had prospered since the days of his father’s carriage building company and was now the major centre for commerce and industry in the South East. Angus shared his father’s bold ambition
experiencing remarkable popularity. Frank and Angus ensured that the original values and ethics by which they worked would remain integral to the developing business which today includes: First National Hall and Partners, First National Neilson Partners, Parklea and Facey Industrial-Commercial. Angus’s son Andrew Facey joined the now thriving business in 1968. We follow his story next time.

Warriors take the field By Russell Bennett The hoop dreams of the Pakenham Warriors’ Big V youth men’s and senior men’s basketball teams revolve around one recurring theme - championship glory. The new season has quickly arrived, and Pakenham’s Youth League Division 2 men are off to a flying start - destroying Keysborough 83-62 in their opening clash at Cardinia Life on Sunday afternoon. Now they want to carry on that momentum and see how far it takes them. “With how we went last year, our goal now has to change a little bit,” said coach Simo Pajdic, who was pleasantly surprised by his side’s performance in 2016. “Our goal wasn’t to win it last year because, to be frank, we didn’t think we were capable of it. “Our goal now is to win it all. “We read something on the Big V website and they’ve tipped us to be the team to beat and all that kind of stuff, but I think the team that’s far ahead of everyone in this division - including us - is probably Casey. They’re just so consistent, and that’s the team we’re hunting.”

(pre-season) tournament,” Pajdic said. “If we could find a middle-ground that’s 15 wins for the season and a potential grand final appearance, and that’s what we’re after.” Pajdic’s assistant Tristan Blacka said the discipline and consistency of Casey is what sets the Cavs apart. From the senior men’s perspective,
the group - coached for the first time this season by Brent Russell - includes a number of new faces. They’re looking to gel as quickly as possible as a unit to get to the stage where they can contend for the Division 2 crown. “With eight or nine new guys it’ll be tough at first as everyone gets used to playing with each other,” said captain Ben Gaze. “But that’s where the pre-season games have been vital in getting everyone switched on. “In the games we’ve played and we’ve won, people have been giving up their good shot for someone else’s better shot.” Star forward James Topp has returned to the Warriors this season after some time away, and he’s quickly realised just how talented this season’s roster is. “It’s a good thing from the perspective of lots of different guys being able to score - rather than just relying on one person,” he said. “I think it’s probably going to be a lot more of an even spread this season, which has already helped with our offense so far.” Gaze praised the depth of the roster,
which will be relied upon from top to bottom throughout the season in an incredibly competitive Division 2. “With our young guys coming in, they know the role they have to play and what they need to do to get the job done. “It’s going to be tough for teams to match up on if everyone is scoring 10 points rather than one person scoring 30.” Topp said the roster was particularly well rounded, with a combination of post, mid-range and outside threats. “It really gives us the ability to adapt to what the other teams do defensively,” he said. The key for Russell’s side is getting to the point where they’re playing their best basketball at the business end of the season. They continue their season this Saturday from 5pm at Cardinia Life against the Southern Peninsula Sharks, while Pajdic’s Youth Men’s side will take on Collingwood straight after on the same floor at 7pm. The Division 2 Youth League Women’s side will head to Dromana Secondary College to take on the Western Port Steelers on Sunday from noon.
Even the cameras of legendary documentary maker David Attenborough have never seen anything like this before. Two stubborn beasts, intent on survival, butting heads, digging in their heels, dust flying, not surrendering a quarter inch of ground. And it happened for two bloody days - it was a remarkable battle for WGCA cricket’s ultimate prize. At the end of the day there could only be one winner, Pakenham lifting its back heel slightly and giving Kooweerup the impetus to claim its fifth title in eight years. Seven of this current crop are still premiership players; they achieved that honour last year, but the chance to go backto-back - something that only great teams achieve - well it slipped through their fingers on the weekend. After the bowling the Demons out for just 113 the Lions were bowled out for 108 - collapsing to 4/12 overnight - the contrast incredible really. “Our bowling was unbelievable, I’ve never seen us bowl and field as well as what we did, it was great to see in a final, but those last five overs cost us dearly,” said coach Rob Elston, whose nerveless 33 not out al-

We just weren’t good enough for long enough. That’s been our motto all year, we were great for most of the time but just had our patches where we lapsed and handed them the initiative. Those last five overs on Saturday were the perfect example.” Elston said reflecting on the loss would be difficult. “When the margin is only five runs you reflect on everything, some of the chances, some of the decisions that might not have gone your way, everything,” he explained. “It’s really hard, in a way it would have been better if were smashed, in the close ones you feel more gutted. We needed to be ballsy to win the game, we
needed to hit the ball when it was there to be hit and we did it okay, but we weren’t good enough for long enough, I keep coming back to that.” Perspective will play an important part in the healing process. “We’ve left no stone unturned and been lucky enough to play in two finals,” Elston said. “On reflection we’ve had some close finals over that journey and we can be thankful we’ve at least won one. But that was last year, today is today, and it will hurt for a while.” Elston said the club was placed going forward. “The young blokes like Thom and Darcy Jones, Dan Vella, we’ve got some very important games into those blokes this year,” he said. “Hopefully we’re building towards something very sustainable. We’ll continue to grow our club and hopefully we’re on this stage again next year ... but opportunities like this don’t grow on trees. We’ll go home, lick our wounds, we’ll commiserate, get through presentation night and then go again.” Elston had nothing but respect for his conquerors. “We fight tooth and nail to get our sides across the line but we’ve got respect for what they’re trying to do at the same time,” he said. “There was nothing untoward out there, just good, hard, tight cricket, and that’s the way it should be.”

Final to beat all finals By Russell Bennett Who would have thought the sequel would be even better than the original? Last year’s West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier division grand final between Pakenham and Kooweerup at Toomuc Reserve was one for the ages, but on the weekend the two sides produced a rematch that could barely be believed even by those who were lucky enough to be at Denhams Road to witness it. From the first ball of Saturday’s play, to the fall of the last wicket late on Sunday afternoon there was pure, unrelenting pressure from both sides. It magnified mistakes, and made each momentum swing seem irreversible. Ultimately, a combined 20 wickets were taken across the two days for just 221 runs. As the Demons warmed up prior to play on Saturday, it all seemed to be business as usual - round 16 of their season, they were calling it. But it was just the calm before the storm. Mark Cooper won the toss and elected to bat and shortly after, in the rooms, he brought his men together before the pre-game ceremony began. They stood as one, behind them signs that read: “No regrets” and “It’s not what the club can do for you, but what you can do for the club”. These signs were nothing new, but

Disaster struck early in their innings with Cooper - Premier’s leading run-scorer - run out from a brilliant piece of fielding by Zac Chaplin off a Chris O’Hara drive. This set the tone for what was to
come from Pakenham - an entire day of relentless pressure in the field. The Demons were ultimately rolled for just 113 in 72 overs with O’Hara playing the crucial anchor role - batting as if his life depended on it for 44.
Spinner Jason Williams was just unbelievable with the ball for Pakenham. Incredibly disciplined, he finished with 4/36 from 20 overs. But day one had another remarkable chapter left to play out. Having to face five overs before stumps, the Lions slid to 4/12 with champion batsman Chris Smith already back in the sheds. Another intense arm wrestle played out throughout day two as the Lions tried to claw their way to victory. Williams (29) and Rob Elston (33 not out) put on a 45-run stand in the middle order to take their side from 6/44 to 7/89 and within sight of a famous win, but there was yet another sting in the tail to come. The final two wickets were ultimately taken by Kooweerup’s most proven big game performer - O’Hara who snared 2/10 from 11 overs as the Lions were dismissed for 108. Jess Mathers earned the Lex Duff Medal as the player of the match with 5/50 from 25 overs. Meanwhile, the boys from Clyde also had a weekend they’ll never forget - claiming both the District and SubDistrict premierships with triumphs over Devon Meadows and Catani respectively. The Cougars will field sides in the top two tiers of the competition next year, with their first XI taking the place of Pakenham Upper-Toomuc, which has slid back to District.
Glory for coach Cooper, within Koowee of premiership By Russell Bennett Mark Cooper has played a lot of first grade cricket at a number of different clubs, but he’d never played in a game quite like the one on the weekend where he led Kooweerup to a famous premiership win at home over Pakenham. “I’ve never played in such a low scoring grand final,” he said. “We played in one at Cranbourne in my first year as captain-coach and it was nearly a reverse outright after we won on the first innings, but nothing like that. “It was bloody draining, but it was an unbelievable contest.” A famous former rival of Kooweerup as the former leader of Cardinia, Cooper never quite imagined winning a premiership alongside the likes of Matt Davey, Chris O’Hara, and the Bright brothers and being part of their winning legacy. “As a captain-coach I was always going to play at multiple clubs,” Cooper acknowledged. “I was always a Cranbourne boy and growing up I thought I’d always stay that way ... but I’ve chopped and changed over time. “You do have a lifespan as a coach - at some clubs it’s longer than others.
“The boys are really close-knit here and this isn’t just me coming in this year and winning the flag - it’s been over a long period of time that they’ve done this. “Doley (Shane Dole) and Doofy (Michael Giles) have been fantastic as leaders here. “I’m just one of the cogs in the wheel. “Tubsy (O’Hara) has probably asked the past eight years whether I’d come to Koowee. “I always thought I’d go back to Cardinia but I still wanted to coach and this opportunity arose, and being only a minute and a half from the ground with my family and those sorts of things, life changes. “It was the right time at the end of last season.” Cooper acknowledged how humbled he felt to be interviewed by Davey and O’Hara for the Kooweerup role. “It’s been a great battle against those guys over the years, and now to be on the same side as them is really satisfying,” he said. The Demons have become known for their rock-solid, stable core of stars but an injury to wicket keeper Chris Bright during the week threatened to throw a spanner in their grand final works.

How he handled it was testament to his character, and the Demons’ team-first culture as Cooper explains. “Wombat hurt himself during the week at training on Tuesday - he bowled a ripper first ball and got me out with the next in the nets, and then he tore his side. “He was in a lot of pain during the week. On Thursday he was a little bit better, but he did all the rehab and got himself up. “He said to me on Friday that he’d step away if he was no good and couldn’t play his shots.” Cooper was also full of praise for another side known for their team-first culture - Pakenham. “Mitsu (Pakenham president Phil Anning) is a star - he’s a champion bloke, and Dom (Paynter) too,” he said. “He’s a brilliant leader and I really enjoyed playing in the Country Week side with him, and Rob (Elston) is a great leader too. All of them are really good blokes and they’re part of a great club. “I respect them hugely and have for a long time, and I know they respect us as well.” Cooper has only enhanced his legacy as a cricketer this season, with an incredible campaign with both bat and ball a key reason behind the Demons’ premiership. And he’s not going anywhere. “I’ll play my career out here,” he said. “Whether I coach or not moving forward, it doesn’t matter. I’ll still be here. This is my home.”
