Casey mayor Sam Aziz says “we’ve lost the battle” after Casey’s crime rate soared during 2016, according to official crime statistics. According to the Crime Statistics Agency, reported offences in Casey went up 12.5 per cent on a per-capita basis (15 per cent on raw figures). It was higher than the statewide percapita crime-rate rise of 10.2 per cent. Cr Aziz said his concerted law-andorder campaign - including lowering the council’s flag to half-mast and declaring Casey as a “city in distress” - was vindicated by crime’s “exponential” growth. “I was a bit more than surprised by the (latest statistics),” Cr Aziz said. “I was heart-broken. There is very much a human side to these statistics. “In reality, people’s lives are disrupted every day by the rise of crime. It flows on to depression, break-ups in families - it makes people feel very insecure.” Overall, there were more than 2200 assaults in 2016 - up 20.9 per cent, more than 2800 burglaries - up 31.5 per cent, and 8000-plus thefts - up 17.8 per cent. Put another way, that’s more than 40 assaults, about 55 burglaries and about 150 thefts a week. Arsons nearly doubled to 256 for the calendar year. On the other hand, drug offences were down 8.6 per cent; trafficking and drug dealing dipped 25 per cent, while drug cultivation and manufacture halved. Hardest hit suburbs for burglaries were Berwick (up 40 per cent), Clyde North (up 46 per cent), Cranbourne West (up 31 per cent), Hallam (up 40 per cent) and Hampton Park (up 67 per cent). Cr Aziz called for a stronger response from the State Government, which has pledged 3135 extra police

A charity organisation based in the south-east that gives homeless people the opportunity for a hot shower has been awarded a grant to expand the size of its operation. Clean as Casper applied for the Dreams for a Better World grant from Sunsuper in January and found out on 9 March that it had received the $25,000 top prize. Co-founder of Clean as Casper Steve Winterton from Kooweerup said he and his team were happy just get to the final round of grants, let alone win the top prize. “We were happy just to get in the grand finale - we were really excited about that,” he said. “Then to win was just ridiculous, they read the winners in reverse order so when we were announced as winners we couldn’t believe it.” Clean as Casper team members were flown to Sydney to attend the ceremony where they beat out 670 other applicants to be awarded the grant money. Mr Winterton said he will be using the money to upgrade the operation from a single portable shower on a trailer to a rolling en suite in the back of a truck. “We interviewed all our homeless clients and asked them what they really wanted from the service,” Mr Winterton said. “We are going with only one shower for privacy because we
Steve Winterton and the Clean as Casper crew receive their big cheque from Sunsuper to expand a mobile shower for the homeless charity mission. often cater for victims of sexual and physical abuse who may not feel safe and might need a bit more space. “We’ve got enough to buy our truck now which will have a bigger shower, a spot for hairdressing, as well as we are hoping to bring on a couple of volunteer nurses for health checks and free flu shots.” The latest round of funding from Sunsuper will see Clean as Casper being able to offer more showers to homeless people in Pakenham, Cranbourne, Frankston and surrounding areas. “We average about 50 showers a week at the moment but
that is not all we do,” Mr Winterton said. “We see well over 200 people a week and we give them a place to talk to other people and connect with other services.” “It goes a lot deeper than just giving people a chance to have a shower.” The Clean as Casper shower trailer currently operates on Monday night in Narre Warren, Tuesday night in Pakenham, Wednesday morning in Chelsea, Wednesday night in Cranbourne, Thursday night in Frankston, Friday night in Melbourne City, and Saturday night in Dandenong.

Ricky gets hit - again By Cam Lucadou-Wells Stabbed with a pitchfork in his own home, Cranbourne North widower Rick Maaskant is sadly no stranger to outrageous crime. An unarmed Mr Maaskant was stabbed in the head and kicked in the back by three male intruders, about 11.20pm on Wednesday 15 March. It’s the latest in a string of crimes that the retired cleaning business owner has been on the receiving end of. He’s had five cars, his wallet and TV remotes stolen from his Endeavour Drive home, he says. But he’d never confronted intruders in his house before. The grandfather of three says if they were second-time offenders they should “put them on a plane and drop them in the ocean”. “We don’t need any more police, we don’t need any more jails,” he said. “They just keep turning up.” Mr Maaskant had been in bed for 10 minutes when he was awoken by a “big bang” inside the house. The intruders - described as Caucasian, in their early twenties and wearing dark hoodies - had smashed the glass on his recently-replaced sliding back door. He found them in his hallway, asked them what they were doing and started fighting them with just his hands. One of the males held a pitchfork to his face, another kicked him in the back seemingly to bring him to ground. “I couldn’t do much because this fork was in my face.” In the scuffle, an unarmed Mr Maaskant was deeply stabbed just above his right eye and behind his left ear. Mr Maaskant considers himself lucky to have escaped with just those wounds. “Blood was everywhere,” he said. “I think the blood frightened the guys off.” Mr Maaskant thinks the intruders were at least associates of earlier car thieves, who had broken into his house several times to steal spare car

keys and then his Mazda MX-5 and Hyundai. He said his neighbourhood had no problems until a particular household of people moved in nearby, as he told Star News in September. “It never ends, it never ends now I can’t even run my business because I don’t have a car,” he said at the time. “Every time I leave here when I
come back someone has been inside - how do you feel after that?” Mr Maaskant thinks his wife died from the “shock” of being victim of one of the car thefts. When the car was stolen and found with “every piece of glass” smashed, she had become sad and died from a heart attack, he said. After the most recent assault, Mr Maaskant said one of the occupants

Mail delivery is carjacked A late parcel delivery for people in Cranbourne East may not be Australia Post’s fault, following the carjacking of a Star Track delivery van on Tuesday 21 March. A delivery driver left his van parked on the side of Waterside Drive at about 9.15am to quickly carry a parcel to a nearby house. As the delivery driver stepped away from the van, leaving the keys in the ignition, an unknown man approached the vehicle. The delivery man heard the other man get into the driver’s seat of the van and turn on the engine. Before the carjacker had a chance to drive away, the deliv-
ery man ran back to the van and tried to pull the keys from the ignition. The thief started to drive away and pushed the delivery man out of the van, leaving him with cuts and abrasions to his hands and knees. The delivery van was recovered a short time later in the small town of Nyora after being tracked by GPS and the engine shut off remotely. Most of the packages in the back of the van had been emptied of their contents by the time police caught up with the stolen vehicle. Three people were arrested and questioned in relation to the theft of the van and of the parcels. A 26-year-old man from
Gembrook has been charged with theft of motor vehicle, theft, handling of stolen goods and committing an offence while on bail. He was remanded in custody to appear the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 22 March. Detective Senior Constable from Casey Crime Investigation Unit Dan Jacobi said it could take some time to recover the stolen goods. “Some of the mail was taken out of the van and while we have recovered the packing, we have no idea what was inside the packages,� he said. “It could take weeks to find out what is missing because Australia Post doesn’t know what’s in these parcels and we also have no idea.� 12342286-HM12-17

In a recent statement read out today to a group of Casey residents and ratepayers, former Casey councillor, Steve Beardon, informed us that, among other things, he has been accused by mayor Sam Aziz of breaching council’s code of conduct for comments made to other councillors, both in and outside of council. Steve Beardon is alleged to have referred to the Rise Up Australia Party secretary, and Four Oaks Ward councillor, Ms Rosalie Crestani, in unflattering terms. Her friend and fellow councillor, Ms Milla Gilic, claims she was shocked by Steve Beardon’s remarks. Well Cr Gilic and mayor Sam Aziz I’m shocked that you both apparently condone the policies of the Rise Up Australia Party and have had absolutely nothing to say about a councillor who belongs to a political party which opposes immigration and multi-culturalism. Casey is a multi-cultural community and deserves much better than councillors ideologically opposed to multi-culturalism or councillors who want to promote relations with an apartheid state! What really needs to be asked is this: does Casey Council support racism? Bail still an option for paedophile By Cam Lucadou-Wells A convicted paedophile has denied moving in with a Cranbourne family including a 16-year-old girl without reporting his change-of-address to police, a court has heard. Jason Griffin had been arrested at the address on 20 March - 18 days after failing to appear at a Frankston court and declining to return calls from police, informant Detective Senior Constable Darren Prestney told a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing that day. Griffin had been allegedly staying with a woman, her daughter and adult son every night for two weeks, despite being bailed to a specific Cranbourne West address. The daughter had allegedly been staying under the same roof for each of those nights, DSC Prestney told the court. When the son spoke to police, Griffin threatened to throw water at the son, then put his hands around the son’s throat and choked him, the informant said. As a registered sex offender, Griffin was required to report to police within one day of be-
ing in contact with a child and changing his address, DSC Prestney said. The accused had failed to promptly report to police several changes in personal circumstance in 2016, including a change in job, phone number and vehicle in June and losing his job in September, the court was told. He had then failed to appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 2 March for the alleged breaches, the court heard. Since then, Griffin had not allegedly returned the informant’s phone call, text message and voice-mail to his home phone number. DSC Prestney told the court he’d visited Griffin’s nominated bail address and left a message with an occupant on 11 March. After his arrest, Griffin gave a no-comment police interview, the court was told. Griffin had been placed on the register for 15 years after being convicted in the Victorian County Court in 2010 for penetration of a child under 16, the informant said. Griffin told the court he’d been worried for his ex-partner and family when she was recently hospitalised and put in an induced coma with a “packed up” liver and kidneys. He denied he’d been living “anywhere else” other than his bail address. “I had so much going on, I forgot about court,” he said. “All of this has just rattled me because I didn’t know what to do. “She might not be able to make it. So if she dies, what happens there?” Magistrate Pauline Spencer said she wasn’t satisfied Griffin had shown cause for bail. “You’re saying you missed a court date due to this issue with your partner, but I don’t have confirmation of that.” Ms Spencer adjourned Griffin’s bail application, awaiting more evidence. Griffin was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 March.

Wrong name is living on By Victoria Stone-Meadows A precinct structure plan (PSP) in the southern reaches of Casey is still using the name of a WWI veteran that has no connection to the region, despite the discovering being made two years ago. The McPherson PSP was named for what was believed to be a digger from Clyde but an investigation by a local historian in 2015 proved that to be untrue. Jane Rivett-Carnac, from the Narre Warren and District Family History Group, found no definitive links to confirm a man named McPherson, or his family, lived in the Clyde area during WWI. Ms Rivett-Carnac believes listings in National Archives referring to Clyde actually appeared to be shortened references to the suburb of Clydesdale near Daylesford, to the north-west of
Melbourne. owever, years on and the PSP is still being referred to as McPherson in all communication from the Victorian Planning Authority, Casey Council and the Office of the Planning Minister. Another local historian, Joan Vanderhorn, recently wrote the Planning Minister Richard Wynn to again bring to his attention the error made in naming the PSP. “I provided the evidence that no soldier by the name of McPherson ever lived or worked in Clyde prior or during WWI,” Ms Vanderhorn said. “The people of that time, c1918-1919, proudly listed service men and woman who had attended Clyde school or lived or worked in Clyde; even service personnel who had left Clyde before commencement of WWI are listed on that roll.” “I also have in my possession
a copy of the records from the Cranbourne branch of the RSL listing the men and women from the Clyde area who enlisted for WWI ... no person with the family name of McPherson is in the Clyde record of WWI military service.” All parties have said McPherson is a temporary working-name and once the new PSP and suburb are established, a more suitable name will be chosen. Ms Rivett-Carnac said it was disappointing the authorities had not corrected the naming error but was hopeful the suburb will be named for a local war veteran. “The name McPherson has no local connection,” she said. “I thought the ideal name would have been Ridgeway apart from being a local family with Anzac connection the land in question is slightly undulating.”
Pair assaulted, phones, wallets stolen Two teenagers managed to flee from a group of older boys who assaulted them and stole valuable items on Saturday 11 March. The 14-year-old from Narre Warren and 16-year-old from Oakleigh were hanging out near the freeway overpass on Magid Drive in Narre Warren when they were approached by five older teenagers. The older teenagers struck a conversation by offering to buy

drugs from the younger pair and then assaulted them and stole their mobile phones and wallets. The pair fled with minor injuries and later alerted police about what had happened. having a large build with dark hair and likened to “Krusty the Clown” from The Simpsons. The Caucasian males were described as having blond hair, and the group were wearing black hoodies at the time. Childcare barriers crushed By Victoria Stone-Meadows A new playgroup in Cranbourne run by Life!Central Services has been donated a brand new coffee machine by a local business. The PlayLife! Playgroup launched on 1 March offers a free service to members of the community who may be facing hardship or cannot access other childcare. PlayLife! organiser and assistant pastor at Life!Central Sheree Crone said the playgroup was a great way for people in the community to access free occasional childcare.
“There are no memberships, PlayLife! Is a free playgroup that any family with children newborns to pre-school age - can attend,” she said. “PlayLife! has been made to be simple and fun to attend for children and their parents/ carers, so apart from signing in, there is no extra paperwork, membership or anything else to worry about.” The group has recently been gifted a brand-new coffee machine from the Good Guys Cranbourne to give parents/carers a treat and to help raise some money for the group. “Our new coffee machine,

High-visibility hospital The much-anticipated redeveloped St John of God Berwick Hospital is set to open its doors in late 2017. The seven-storey building of a two-level underground carpark and five-level hospital services is located on Kangan Drive, Berwick, and is highly visible from many vantage points around the Casey region. St John of God CEO Lisa Norman said this visibility had led to many inquiries and questions from the community about the hospital. In answer to some of the most frequently asked questions, she said the new hospital would offer all of the services currently offered at the Gibb Street hospital, as well as new services. There will be 202 beds, an intensive care unit, eight operating theatres, a cardiac and vascular catheter laboratory, cardiac unit, six birthing suites, a six cot special care nursery and 350 basement car parks. Ms Norman said the current Gibb Street hospital would operate as usual during construction. “We will relocate all services currently located at Gibb Street to the new hospital in Kangan Drive,” she said. “The Gibb Street facility will temporarily close whilst it undergoes a redevelopment of its own and will be transformed into a rehabilitation hospital that will open in mid-2018.
St John of God’s new hospital in Kangan Drive is taking shape. “Our consulting suites and pathology laboratory will be relocated to the new hospital. This creates an opportunity for new services in this facility.” Ms Norman said parking prices would be similar to the Casey Hospital car parking fees and there would be no emergency department at the new hospital when it opened. “There will be no ED in this stage. Future planning has considered the addition of an ED at the Kangan Drive Hospital,” she said. Ms Norman said there would be plenty of opportunities for employment at St John of God with a recruitment campaign

FACEY REAL ESTATE MARKS 100 YEARS Frances Angus Facey (1909-1984) A total of 100 years in any business is a milestone but in the ever-changing world of real estate, the achievement is rare. Last month we started our series on the 100 successful years of Frank Facey Real Estate and this month we focus on the next chapter in the history of this influential company. Frank Facey’s inspired decision to purchase his first real estate business in 1917 paved the way for the following generations of his family. The subsequent expansion of his original company now incorporates businesses in Dandenong, Mulgrave, Endeavour Hills, Berwick, Narre Warren and Pakenham. It was during the challenging days of the 1930s that Frank’s son, Francis Angus Facey, decided to join his father’s business. Together they formed a formidable team. Angus and his wife Adele were early pioneers in the Dandenong and Berwick area. They both earned the respect and admiration of their peers for their tireless community work throughout the region. By now, Frank’s predictions for growth in the South East were being realised and much of the area’s development was successfully transacted through the Frank Facey Real Estate business. Angus followed his father’s lead and became a Fellow of the Real Estate Institute of Valuers in 1936. In 1956 Frank Facey’s Real Estate and Business Agency built a new, modern office at 254 Lonsdale Street Dandenong, where First National Hall and Partners still reside
to this day. Dandenong had prospered since the days of his father’s carriage building company and was now the major centre for commerce and industry in the South East. Angus shared his father’s bold ambition and insight into the future development of the region and he purchased a 65-acre property at Narre Warren. In 1984 that property became one of the area’s first subdivisions, Franleigh Park Estate. A public reserve was named in his
honour: The Angus Facey Reserve. Frank Facey and his son Angus were at the helm when Dandenong and the surrounding districts grew from broad pastoral farmlands into the vibrant towns and cities that are to this day still experiencing remarkable popularity. Frank and Angus ensured that the original values and ethics by which they

Ashley chases state title By David Nagel It is remarkable to think that at just 15 years of age Ashley Chandrasinghe will be chasing his second national title when he lines up for Victoria in Brisbane next week. The Narre Warren South lefthander has been chosen to represent his state at the School Sports Australia 15 and Under Cricket Championships - taking on the best from around the country in the hunt for the Ricky Ponting Cup. But for Ashley - he won’t be overly anxious because he’s been there and done it all before. He was first selected for Victoria as a 10-year-old cricket prodigy, travelling to South Australia for the Under 12 Championships in December 2012. By that stage of his fledgling
career, he had already captained a Dandenong and District Cricket Association (DDCA) representative side after successfully modelling his style on fellow left-handers Mike Hussey and Kumar Sangakkara. “I just like to watch how they play and what they do at the crease,” Ashley said. “Just like them, I like to graft early, occupy the crease, but if the bad ball is there you need to deal with it.” Ashley showed promising signs in that first carnival, scoring a match-winning 16 not out under enormous pressure against the Northern Territory. But it was at his second carnival in Bendigo in January 2014 where he really made his mark. He batted three times, with scores of 39 (Northern Territory),
57 not out (South Australia) and 29 (New South Wales) helping the Vics to become Under 12 champions. “I still get nervous, but I guess I’ve had the opportunity to learn a few things from those previous championships and hopefully that will give me an advantage in Brisbane,” he said. Ashley will head into the championships primed for a big performance after a solid and very busy season of cricket. He plays for Buckley Ridges in the DDCA junior competition, taking on his first club Berwick Springs in the weekend’s Under 17 (1) grand final. He had made 411 runs at an average of 82.2 heading into the season decider despite still being eligible for the Under 15s. He also plies his trade for Vic
Premier club Casey-South Melbourne, opening the batting in the very competitive third’s competition. “Playing premier cricket has been a great learning experience, just preparing with that level of cricketers has really helped with my attitude to the game,” he said. “I have big ambitions but none of those will matter if I don’t keep working hard and trying my best in every training session and every game I play in. I’ll just keep working hard and see where it takes me.” Ashley wanted to thank God for everything He has given him, his parents Ajith and Hashanthi and his sister Jessica for their support, batting coach Owen Mottau, CaseySouth Melbourne and every other club he has played for over his brief but exciting journey.

The pride of Cranbourne in the two biggest football codes have come together as one to promote their clubs in the area. The Cranbourne Football Club and Casey Comets have joined forces in a partnership to build community support of both clubs. “It’s not a financial burden on the clubs - it’s more just about getting more people involved,” said Cranbourne Football Club president Shane Baker. “It’s about supporting each other’s social media sites, events, things like that. “We can share databases and all sorts of things down the track but this is the first year of it (the partnership) so we’ve kept this pretty simple so we can manage it.”
Casey president Dawn Stone said it was important for people associated with both clubs to respect and appreciate both of the major football codes in the Cranbourne area. “It doesn’t have to be one or the other - there’s no reason why people can’t appreciate both,” she said. “By us supporting each other and coming together, people in Cranbourne are only going to benefit from it. “There are times we’ll both be playing on Saturday afternoons, but where we can, let’s build up each other's audiences because we’re supporting sport in Cranbourne. “I can see this getting bigger too. “If we can go to the State Government united and the council can support us with that, then that can
only be a good thing.” Baker said it wasn’t about taking from one to give to the other. “Players have made their choices about which codes they want to play, but if people can show some interest and a bit more support in both of our clubs, then we can both only benefit from it,” he said. “We don’t feel threatened by any other sport - we are what we make of it.” The Casey Comets will hold a season opening function prior to their first State League 1 match of 2017 against Mornington this Friday night from 7pm at the stadium on O’Toole’s Road in Cranbourne. Cobras down Hawks By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1-7 TURF 1 PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW A rampaging Heinz-Southern Districts has stunned Hallam-Kalora Park, booking themselves a grand final showdown with Mordialloc next week. In a tight and torrid affair at Hallam Rec Reserve, Cobras’ skipper Matt Cox elected to bat - at a ground renowned for batting. They started in solid fashion, putting on 31-runs for the first wicket, before Brad Downe (85) and the in-form Kaushyla Weeraratne (64) flayed the hosts in a dominant display. The Hawks kept coming and fought back admirably, as Weeraratne and Downe eventually fell to some excellent bowling by Jordan Hammond and Jake Cutting. Some late fireworks by star allrounder Michael Davies (41 not out) and keeper Brodie Yapp (20) lifted the Cobras to an imposing and potentially match-winning 7/267 off 90 overs. Hammond (3/69) was the pick of the bowlers for the Hawks, while Cutting (2/24) and Leigh Booth (1/49) were strong supporting acts. And the ladder-leading Hawks looked to be cruising early on day two when Ben Hillard and Leigh Booth skipped out to 0/86. But it was Weeraratne (3/76) that stood tall for the Cobras, ripping the two openers apart before bowling Jagveer Hayer for a duck in the space of half-an-hour. With the score evenly poised at
3/109, the Hawks rebuilt smartly through Hammond (47) and Corey Booth (54 not out), before another duo of wickets ensured the game would go down to the wire. As the Cobras tightened up with their lines, scoring became a grind, and as the run-rate continued to drop dramatically, the chances of an upset brewing grew traction. The equation became simple enough - 35 off just 18 balls. But it was the Cobras who defended brilliantly, with the Hawks unable to find the boundaries. The Hawks fell 18-runs short of victory, falling in straight sets after finishing on top-of-the-ladder at the end of the home and away season. TURF 2-7 GRAND FINAL REVIEW A completely dominant St Mary’s side are the Turf 2 champions of 2016/17, crushing the Southern Pirates at Keysborough. The Pirates struggled on day one, scratching their way to 158 after a few hiccups early, with gun bat Aditya Ganesh (39) showing terrific composure to steer the innings. Junaid Kari (5/29) was the destroyer, doing what all good spinners do removing the tail. And St Mary’s ended the day in dire trouble, losing three quick wickets to be 3/32 at stumps. But Jake Needham (80 not out) blew the Pirates away in brutal fashion, winning the game off his own blade, and combining rock-solid defence with aggressive stroke-play.

By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 GRAND FINAL PREVIEW HEINZ-SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v MORDIALLOC WHEN and WHERE: 25 and 26 March, Arch Brown Reserve, Berwick It was only two years ago that these two powerful clubs locked horns to decide the Turf 1 premiership. On 14 and 15 March 2015, Mordialloc claimed their maiden premiership in the top-tier of the Dandenong District Cricket Association, dismantling HSD in utterly brutal fashion. And on Saturday, the two clubs will reignite their rivalry, in the DDCA’s first stand-alone Turf 1 grand final. With all other divisions done and dusted for 2016/17, the crowd is expected to stream into the Cave to witness history. Both sides have equal rights to be there, and are at the peak of their game. For the Bloodhounds, they have become the benchmark since after Christmas, while the Cobras continue to find a way to win. In the semis, the Bloodhounds proved a class above a strong Hallam side away from home, with Dimith Mapa Ralage (95) and Chathura Athukorala (66) combining brilliantly in the middle order. The key to winning this weekend is the ability to restrict scoring and build dot balls, the benchmark for any potential premier. Premiership victories are built upon the little moments that often go unnoticed, and unlike regular season matches, team cohesiveness is by the far the most important aspect of the game. LAST TIME THEY MET: In Round 9, the Bloodhounds were far too strong for the Cobras, with Leon Kennedy smashing his side to victory with a brutal 72. Cox was the lone hand in their batting innings, making 47. KEY PLAYERS: Kaushalya Weeraratne has been quiet through stages of the regular season, but has truly lifted in his two finals to date. In those games, he has scored 111 and 64, while also taking 2/20 and 3/76. For the Cobras to hold the trophy aloft, Weeraratne must fire. For the Bloodhounds, Chathura Athukorala continues to dominate the competition, and has the ability to win a game for his team with either bat or ball. He is built for the finals moments, having played a major hand in their Turf 1 flag two years ago. GAZETTE PREDICTION: Take it to the bank, this game will go down to the final 30 minutes on day two. Such is the closeness of both the teams, it is likely that the match will never truly be over until the last run is scored or the last wicket is taken. But Mordialloc’s form is hard to ignore, and should be confident of winning their second flag in three years. Final to beat all finals By Russell Bennett Who would have thought the sequel would be even better than the original? Last year’s West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier division grand final between Pakenham and Kooweerup at Toomuc Reserve was one for the ages, but on the weekend the two sides produced a rematch that could barely be believed even by those who were lucky enough to be at Denhams Road to witness it. From the first ball of Saturday’s play, to the fall of the last wicket late on Sunday afternoon there was pure, unrelenting pressure from both sides. It magnified mistakes, and made each momentum swing seem irreversible. Ultimately, a combined 20 wickets were taken across the two days for just 221 runs. As the Demons warmed up prior to play on Saturday, it all seemed to be business as usual - round 16 of their season, they were calling it. But it was just the calm before the storm. Mark Cooper won the toss and elected to bat and shortly after, in the rooms, he brought his men together before the pre-game ceremony began. They stood as one, behind them signs that read: “No regrets” and “It’s not what the club can do for you, but what you can do for the club”. These signs were nothing new, but they befitted the same teamfirst mentality the Demons had carried with them all season. It’s a mentality they’d have to rely on more than ever over the next two days. Disaster struck early in their innings with Cooper - Premier’s leading run-scorer - run out from
a brilliant piece of fielding by Zac Chaplin off a Chris O’Hara drive. This set the tone for what was to come from Pakenham - an entire day of relentless pressure in the field. The Demons were ultimately rolled for just 113 in 72 overs with O’Hara playing the crucial anchor role - batting as if his life depended on it for 44. Spinner Jason Williams was just unbelievable with the ball for Pakenham. Incredibly disciplined, he finished with 4/36 from 20 overs. But day one had another remarkable chapter left to play out. Having to face five overs before stumps, the Lions slid to 4/12 with champion batsman Chris Smith already back in the sheds. Another intense arm wrestle played out throughout day two as the Lions tried to claw their way to victory. Williams (29) and Rob Elston (33 not out) put on a 45-run stand in the middle order to take their side from 6/44 to 7/89 and within sight of a famous win, but there was yet another sting in the tail to come. The final two wickets were ultimately taken by Kooweerup’s most proven big game performer - O’Hara - who snared 2/10 from 11 overs as the Lions were dismissed for 108. Jess Mathers earned the Lex Duff Medal as the player of the match with 5/50 from 25 overs. Meanwhile, the boys from Clyde also had a weekend they’ll never forget - claiming both the District and Sub-District premierships with triumphs over Devon Meadows and Catani respectively. The Cougars will field sides in the top two tiers of the competition next year, with their first XI taking the place of Pakenham UpperToomuc, which has slid back to District.

Glory for coach Cooper, within Koowee of premiership By Russell Bennett Mark Cooper has played a lot of first grade cricket at a number of different clubs, but he’d never played in a game quite like the one on the weekend where he led Kooweerup to a famous premiership win at home over Pakenham. “I’ve never played in such a low scoring grand final,” he said. “We played in one at Cranbourne in my first year as captain-coach and it was nearly a reverse outright after we won on the first innings, but nothing like that. “It was bloody draining, but it was an unbelievable contest.” A famous former rival of Kooweerup as the former leader of Cardinia, Cooper never quite imagined winning a premiership alongside the likes of Matt Davey, Chris O’Hara, and the Bright brothers and being part of their winning legacy. “As a captain-coach I was always going to play at multiple clubs,” Cooper acknowledged. “I was always a Cranbourne boy and growing up I thought I’d always stay that way ... but I’ve chopped and changed over time. “You do have a lifespan as a coach - at some clubs it’s longer than others. “The boys are really close-knit here and this isn’t just me coming in this year and winning the flag - it’s been over a long period of time that they’ve done this. “Doley (Shane Dole) and Doofy (Michael Giles) have been fantastic as leaders here. “I’m just one of the cogs in the wheel. “Tubsy (O’Hara) has probably asked the past eight years whether I’d come to Koowee. “I always thought I’d go back to Cardinia

the Kooweerup role. “It’s been a great battle against those guys over the years, and now to be on the same side as them is really satisfying,” he said. The Demons have become known for their rock-solid, stable core of stars but an injury to wicket keeper Chris Bright during the week threatened to throw a spanner in their grand final works. How he handled it was testament to his character, and the Demons’ team-first culture as Cooper explains. “Wombat hurt himself during the week at training on Tuesday - he bowled a ripper first ball and got me out with the next in the nets, and then he tore his side. “He was in a lot of pain during the week. On Thursday he was a little bit better, but he did all the rehab and got himself up. “He said to me on Friday that he’d step away if he was no good and couldn’t play his shots.” Cooper was also full of praise for another side known for their team-first culture - Pakenham. “Mitsu (Pakenham president Phil Anning) is a star - he’s a champion bloke, and Dom (Paynter) too,” he said. “He’s a brilliant leader and I really enjoyed playing in the Country Week side with him, and Rob (Elston) is a great leader too. All of them are really good blokes and they’re part of a great club. “I respect them hugely and have for a long time, and I know they respect us as well.” Cooper has only enhanced his legacy as a cricketer this season, with an incredible campaign with both bat and ball a key reason behind the Demons’ premiership.
And he’s not going anywhere. “I’ll play my career out here,” he said. “Whether I coach or not moving forward, it doesn’t matter. I’ll still be here. Invincibles lock horns By David Nagel Coach Michael ‘Jock’ Holland and his army of South East Football Netball League invincibles will take their unbeaten representative run to the Holden Centre to take on the Hampden League on Saturday 13 May. SEFNL will head to Collingwood’s training and administration centre being just the second league in the state to have triumphed in all five contests since an interleague restructure in 2012, joining the number one ranked Geelong with a perfect record. Holland agreed that the SEFNL’s recent unbeaten run may have played a role in the decision to play the game in the heart of Melbourne’s sporting precinct. “You would like to think so,” he said. “You don’t win five of these games in a row without a lot of commitment from a lot of people, and hopefully this is reward for the effort that the league has put in. We’re taking on the bigger leagues now, so we’ll need to bring our A grade game to the contest, there’s no doubt about that.” Holland will stick to a tried and trusted plan as he prepares for the big clash. “Some blokes obviously pick themselves, but I’ll sneak around and have a look over the first few weeks of the season and come up
with a squad that we think can get the job done,” he said. “We’d love to give a few young blokes a go as well, so it’s shaping up as a pretty strong squad.” The interleague legend said it was exciting times for representative football and an added boost to the contest, with Hampden to be coached by former Brisbane champion Jonathon Brown. “It’s really exciting and a great opportunity for country and suburban footballers to test their abilities against quality opposition on a big stage,” he said. “Obviously, there was already a degree of spotlight on the contest with Jonathan Brown coaching Hampden, and this just adds that little bit more to the contest.” AFL Victoria has also announced the top-ranked WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships match between Geelong and the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League will be played on the hallowed turf of the MCG. The match will be played as a curtain-raiser to the Round 8 dedicated AFL Country Game between Essendon and Geelong. AFL Victoria Community Football Operations manager Gerard Ryan said this was a fantastic opportunity for local players to experience playing football at elite AFL facilities.

Medal haul for Casey athletes On Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 March, Little Athletics Victoria held their State Track and Field Championships for Under 9-Under 15 Athletes at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. This event is their big event for the season where all the qualifiers from the seven regions come together for the state titles. Casey Little Athletics Centre had 57 athletes qualify for these championships with many top-eight finishes, heaps of personal best results and lots of fun, enjoyment and excitement. Classy Demons look to next year By Nick Creely AFL WOMEN'S LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 7 MELBOURNE v FREMANTLE A record-breaking performance from Melbourne ensured they finished their season on a high at Casey Fields on Saturday. Up against the struggling Dockers, the Demons were dominant early, moving the ball slickly to set up an 18-point lead at the first-break. With a grand final spot the motivation for the Dees, they didn’t take their foot off the pedal, slamming on another three goals in the secondterm to take a commanding 39-point lead into half-time. The Dockers then were held scoreless for the entirety of the second-half, as the dominant Demons ran around the ground virtually unattended. They eventually ran out 54-point winners, an AFLW record, while also registering the highest score of the season, 70.
Demons skipper Daisy Pearce ended her season with another best-on-ground performance, while regulars Karen Paxman, Alyssa Mifsud and Elise O’Dea were all important with their runand-carry. But Pearce, who racked up another 22 disposals for the Demons, was simply a class above, ensuring her team can finish on a high after a season marred by a slow start. Demons coach Mick Stinear was proud of the performance from his team, citing the ability to play with the same intensity all game. “All season we’ve wanted to play four quarters and the girls did that. They worked hard and they played their hearts out,” he said. Unfortunately for the Demons, the Crows were able to book themselves a grand final spot the very next day after they thumped the Magpies by 24-points at Olympic Park Oval. The Demons now finish third on the AFLW inaugural ladder.

At the final hurdle, the Dandenong Rangers have failed to deliver with the Sydney Uni Flames claiming the WNBL title on Friday night. In front of their home crowd, the Rangers were uncharacteristically sloppy despite starting like a house on fire, eventually going down 75-62. Trying to force the grand final into a third game on Sunday, the signs were strong early as the Rangers skipped out to 22-11 lead at the first break. But the Flames tightened up defensively and became irresistible at the three-point-line, and started to wrestle back control despite the deafening noise produced from the crowd. It then culminated in over two quarters of dominance from the Flames, with the Rangers unable to find an answer. By the start of the last-term, in which the Flames opened up a 12-point buffer, the fizz in the game faded away, with the Rangers bravely fighting it out to the end despite the inevitable loss. Leliani Mitchell was the outstanding force throughout the grand final series, taking out the Rachel Sporn Medal for the MVP, but it was Belinda Snell (15 points and 11 rebounds) who stole the show with a truly dominant display. Steph Cumming (17 points) and Sara Blicavs (10 points and six rebounds) both ended their respective seasons on a high. Retiring legend Jacinta Kennedy did all she could to drag her team over the line with nine points and two assists, and paid tribute to the club immediately after the game. “It’s definitely not the way we wanted to end the year, but I could not be prouder to be part of this team, to be playing alongside the girls and for the coaching staff - I fully believe that this group can go one step further next year, and I’ll be here cheering every step of the way,” she said.

The Lions met with South East Football Netball League executives at their home ground last Thursday to convey their concerns with the new season just around the corner. The fifth generation all-wheel drive Impreza is based on the new global platform that will underpin all new models for the coming decade. The platform is 95 per cent new, so it’s a major step up for a company that is famed for engineering excellence. Subaru says that the Global Platform offers new levels of agility, crash protection, efficiency and enjoyable driving in a vehicle that sees the biggest step-change in Impreza since the original launched in Australia in 1994. Also debuting with the new Impreza is a 12,500 kilometre / 12-month capped price service program. Available as a sedan or hatchback exclusively with a continuously variable transmission, Impreza 2.0i sedan is priced from $22,400, plus on-road costs, with considerable upgrades in specification. The Impreza 2.0i-S hatch, the test vehicle, tops out the range at $29,190. At first the presence of three screens of information may seem daunting but familiarity takes away the fears and co-ordinated control and connectivity between the multi-information display and multi-function display, enhance
operation and improve safety while driving. The simple layout of gauges and controls makes them easy and intuitive to control. In Impreza 2.0i-S the widescreen full colour MFD, situated in the top of the central dashboard, provides a stack of information, including Vehicle Dynamics Control and fuel efficiency, additional navigation information and an automatic display of essential information in pop-up screens. The LCD located in the instrument cluster, between the gauges, includes graphical information for driving and control, without the need to read, while the infotainment unit shows information including rear view camera display and entertainment information. Smartphone connectivity is available by way of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All Imprezas are powered by a 2.0-litre direct-injection flat-four engine, producing 115 kW of power at 6000rpm, and 196Nm of torque at 4000rpm. Major improvements have been made throughout the engine, including higher power output in the most useful range. It has a higher compression ratio, better gas flow and high-flow exhaust gas system. Weight savings throughout the drivetrain add their part.
