By Monique Kuzeff The impressive four-bedroom charity house in Thurgoona’s Somerset Rise Estate built to raise funds for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre (AWRCC) Trust Fund was sold prior to being put under the hammer last weekend. An out-of-town buyer, who wanted to remain anonymous, snapped up the unique buy which will contribute some $65,000 to the AWRCC Trust Fund. AWRCC Trust Fund fund-raising manager Jane Evans said she was “blown away” when she heard of the end amount and that it was a significant donation to the trust fund. “Thirty to fifty thousand would have been an amazing donation to the cancer centre, but now we are looking at in excess of $65K,” Ms Evans said. “It’s been amazing and we were blown away when the trust heard that figure this week because we thought we’d get half of that number.” The charity house auction project (CHAP) was a two and a half year project which came to fruition after countless headaches for Green Homes Australia builders David and Beth Hawkins. There were delays in approvals and administration issues before the Mr Hawkins could even turn the first bit of soil. “We were given the block but because we didn’t have the title to the block the
council couldn’t approve the permit because what we did was unheard of,” Mr Hawkins said. “But this isn’t just testament of Beth and my hard work, it’s also a testament of the suppliers and other people who got on board to make it a reality. “There are so many things we would’ve had to pay for which we were able to attain at no cost or very minimal cost, including services and resources.” The CHAP was made possible with the voluntary input of 42 businesses and tradespeople who donated their time and materials over the seven months it took to construct the house. William Bonnici, director of Bonnici and Associates First National Real Estate, said the information on the sold price and the buyer would remain undisclosed for now, but would come out in time. “The buyer is relocating to the area. They saw it, they loved it and was impressed with the build and the design was her words,” Mr Bonnici said. “It was totally different to anything else she had seen across Albury-Wodonga and she just had to have it. “The fact that the proceeds were going to the cancer trust played a part in the marketing and I think, without her saying it, I’m sure it gave her a warm feeling inside to know that she was contributing to such a fantastic cause and facility.”

Work needed for closure By Monique Kuzeff The most recent Closing the Gap (CTG) report shows that only one of seven keys priorities of CTG has gained traction over nine years - meaning Australia still has a way to go to improve average life expectancy in Indigenous people. Primary Health Network (PHN) joined various health services including Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service, Gateway Health at Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation at a Closing the Gap event on Thursday to celebrate Aboriginal culture and recognise that there was still a lot to do to improve action on the gap. For the Albury Wodonga region, education for Indigenous children and immunisation rates had improved significantly according to PHN regional manager Richard McClelland. “For us, the one care area around education for kids has improved and we are quite fortunate in the Albury Wodonga area that we’ve got a range of educational opportunities for Aboriginal children and people,” Mr McClelland said. “At the moment PHN is hoping to bring in district-wide activities such as Koorie Kindermanna so that we are working right from that preconception phase in life that kids are given a better opportunity.” He said PHN and Aboriginal services need to focus on the key priorities of closing the gap from preconception. “I think that what the CTG report shows is that there areas that we still need to work on but we do need to focus on preconception and the early years through school providing a positive start to life. “There are so many aspects that

lander people to have access to a range of services. “Having access to services is the number one priority and certainly those organisations work hard to ensure those services are being targeted and tailored to Aboriginal people,” he said.
“One of the key areas that we recognise in the PHN is that the services must be culturally appropriate which is a big-ticket issue for the Aboriginal communities.” The Closing the Gap event in Wodonga aimed to bring people together
in support of achieving Indigenous health equality by 2030. “We still have a way to go and the report really does demonstrate that we are well under the par and need to continue our efforts now and in to the future,” Mr McClelland said.
New life for old monitors In a scheme unique to the Border, residents are being encouraged to deposit unwanted computer monitors at the Sustainability Activity Centre where they will be assessed and repaired, if possible, and donated to local refugee families. Sanctuary Refugee Group spokesperson Penny Vine was delighted with the plan. The driver of this initiative, Phil Shields, is a nurse, electronics engineer and one of Repair Cafe AlburyWodonga’s battery-operated appliance repairers. Last year he fixed five broken monitors and donated them to Sanctuary Refugee Group. “I went scouting for broken monitors and selected good-looking ones that I thought I’d have a good chance of fixing,” he said. “They were mostly simple com-
mon fixes, but the owners obviously decided to ditch them because of the repair cost. It took me about two hours per monitor. Usually it was a simple fix like replacing the power supply.” Australians are among the highest users of technology, and e-waste is one of the fastest growing types of waste. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australians buy more than four million computers annually. Unfortunately they have a finite life with many ending up in landfill. Governments have introduced a scheme to facilitate computer and television recycling, breaking down the products into their various components, many of which can be recycled for future use. “It’s better to try repairing before recycling, but any monitors I can’t repair will be placed in the national television and computer recycling scheme at the Albury Waste Management Cen-
tre.” Mr Shields said. In the mid-1970s Mr Shields was one of the first technicians employed at the Sanyo colour television factory in Wodonga. “As a hobby I then began repairing computer monitors when they first came into being. It is just another form of technology to me - I have an internal drive to understand and master any electronic technology.” When asked his motivation to repair and donate computer monitors, he said he had accumulated a great deal of knowledge over the years and that it would be a waste to not use it for some good. Residents are encouraged to bring their unwanted, preferably more modern computer monitors to The Sustainable Activity Centre, Gateway Island, during opening hours; Wednesday to Friday 10am- 5pm and Saturdays 9am - noon.

At the official opening, students and teachers were greeted by Liberal Senator for Victoria Jane Hume who boasted about the “state-of-the-art facility” which had “incredible technological capabilities”. The Federal Government contributed $600,000 through its Capital Grants Program. “These really are state-of-the-art facilities, very flexible learning spaces, incredible technological capability and I love the fact that there are rooms where students are able to work collaboratively or privately,” Ms Hume said.
“I am blown away by the natural light and the colours which makes it one of those places that elevate your mood just by being in the room. “The technology is amazing and changes the entire learning dynamic for the school, giving students and staff incredible flexibility in learning and teaching,” she said. Indi MP Cathy McGowan and Benambra MP Bill Tilley also attended the opening to inspect the new learning centre.
By Monique Kuzeff Litter not only makes the environment an unsightly thing but it is also costing AlburyCity Council some $300,000 a year to clean up. AlburyCity launched an antilittering campaign at Nail Can Hill on Monday morning to encourage residents to ‘Report a Tosser’. This particular campaign is focused around litter-bugs who throw rubbish out of their vehicles and asks people who might witness such an act to report the tosser by registering with the NSW EPA. The EPA would then look into the claim and issue fines of $250 for an individual and $500 for a corporation for littering from a vehicle. Former mayor Henk van de Ven hoped that the campaign would be “effective” saying that the risk of being dobbed in would work to prevent some people from throwing rubbish out of their vehicle windows. “One of the most disgusting things that people do is to throw rubbish out of their cars,” Cr van de Ven said. “It’s a pet hate of mine and I’ve always been frustrated that you couldn’t do anything about it. “I hope this campaign is going to be effective and from the perspective that people embrace it and I think the threat of being dobbed in by your fellow community member should be enough for people to stop throwing rubbish out of their car.” Since February 2015 more than 19,000 people across NSW registered with the EPA to report tossers from vehicles. Over 25,000 reports of littering from a vehicle was made and more than 16,000 fines were issued by the EPA. Mr van de Ven said society had become more “consciously aware” of litter in the environment and the
Cr Henk van de Ven encourages the community to report a tosser through the NSW EPA website. 166292 Picture: MONIQUE KUZEFF option for people to register and report littering incidents was something that was needed. “It’s a situation where people are becoming more aware of it and we are a conscious society as far as rubbish is concerned and that’s evident in our efforts around recycling and all that kind of stuff,” he said. “If you look at my car there is a lot of rubbish in there because I use it as my rubbish bag and eventually it will be thrown out at a proper rubbish facility rather than just throwing it out a window. “If I knew that somebody could be watching me and if I threw something out and they were going to dob me in I’d certainly think twice before throwing something out of the car.” Cr van de Ven encouraged the community to get on board by registering at the NSW EPA website, www.epa.nsw.gov.au/reporttoepa

Year 11 and 12 students at Victory Lutheran College in Wodonga now have a flexible and open state-of-the-art space where they can learn and do private study. Last Friday saw the official opening of the $2 million Argus Learning Centre at the school which students welcomed with open arms. The Argus Learning Centre is named after the Fairchild Argus Mk.II, a 1948 light utility aircraft built by the US Navy and Britain’s Royal Air Force during World War II. The new facility encompassed a large auditorium, meeting rooms, classrooms and offices. The new facility stands out as a natural light filled and flexible learning centre with easy accessibility to all senior students. School captain Caleb Parslow said the new learning centre provided something “different” and “dynamic” for senior students to study and learn. “It’s really different from some of the other ideas we’ve tried out,” Mr Parslow said. “It’s very flexible and has dynamic classrooms and work spaces and it’s very exciting and interesting. “I like having a space where Year 12s are able to work in and have study sessions together. It’s good to just mix things up once in a while as it keeps things alive and new.” Mr Parslow said the facility was something that had been needed at the school for quite a while. “This has added a lot especially for study because often we’d just go in to different classrooms and its was never really organised or scheduled. “But this is a work place and mainly dedicated as an extra study space and we have complete access to it.”

Rockin’ it out at the raceway Popular for high-speed action, Winton Motor Raceway will attract crowds for a different purpose this Saturday. The inaugural Rockin’ The Raceway on Saturday 25 March will feature some of Australia’s favourite musicians, as the venue transforms into an open-air rock concert. Performers will include Thirsty Merc, The Choirboys, Adam Brand, Dean Ray and Geelong cover band Riversnake. Winton operations manager, Wayne Williams says the concert is something unique that could become a tourism attraction in its own right. “It’s building up to be one of the biggest events around the area,” Mr Williams said. “It’s almost as big as one of our popular race meetings. For us, it’s new, it’s exciting and something that hasn’t been done before, but we’ve got the best facilities for an outdoor concert. Concert patrons are encouraged to camp overnight, with the campground able to hold up to 5000 guests. “With the campground available, people won’t need to worry about getting home afterwards, they can enjoy the concert and then stay the night.” Organisers hope this will become an annual event that might one day grow to rival other iconic events. “We hope we can grow it into an event like Deni Ute Muster, a weekend event with plenty of rock bands - something different to motorsport that brings in new visitors to the area,” Mr Williams said. Braved the shave By Monique Kuzeff A brave administration officer who works at the Gardens Medical Clinic (GMC) in Albury, Natalie Nicholas, pledged to shave off her golden locks to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation as part of the World’s Greatest Shave on Tuesday. The motivation was prompted by her families and close friend’s experience with cancer in past years. She lost two uncles and a friend. “I’ve witnessed first-hand the devastating effects of cancer on sufferers and their families,” Ms Nicholas said. “Both my parents are cancer survivors and a close friend died earlier this year from the disease.” She sat in front of the reception at the GMC with a crowd flocking to witness the event, while Albury Hair Theatre hairdresser Lyn Collins worked her magic. Natalie hoped to raise more than $1000 which would be used for research that would help many more survive blood cancers including lymphoma, leukemia and myeloma, while improving the quality of life. “It’s only hair, it will grow back
and raising a few thousand dollars that will go towards cancer research is worth it. “If they can find a cure for one they will find a cure for all hopefully. “While I’ve never done anything like this before, I wasn’t that nervous because I couldn’t wait to get it off - but today I was. "It's only hair at the end of the day and I’ve only ever had it short anyway.” Ms Nicholas said she would proudly expose her new look and not hide it, as it might even help some sick patients at the GMC. “I’m not going to try and hide it and we are in a medical practice and often see a lot of unwell patients, so if I could help them then that’s great. “I think I will get a lot of people asking if I have cancer but I’ll just explain that I don’t and that I did it to raise money for a good cause. “Any money I raised through this is a bonus.” The funds raised will also contribute to giving families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need.

1000 hectare plan WODONGA Council will seek authorisation from the Minister for Planning to prepare an amendment to the Wodonga Planning Scheme to include the Leneva Baranduda Precinct Structure Plan. The Leneva Baranduda Precinct Structure Plan provides a framework for more than 1000 hectares of land including proposed locations for housing, schools, open space, bike and pedestrian crossings, infrastructure and retail centres within the natural environment of the Leneva Valley. The move to seek authorisation from the Minister is the first step in the process of submitting the amendment with the motion passed at the March council meeting. Once approved, the council will exhibit the draft amendment and consider submissions; request an independent panel consider objections and consider the panel’s report; before requesting council adopt the amendment and seek the Minister’s approval of the amendment. Each step will require a council resolution. “This represents a unique opportunity for our city to plan a comprehensive, integrated, sustainable and water-smart development that will effectively allow for our population to double,” Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said. “It has been a long journey for the council and our community. “This is the largest greenfield precinct structure plan in Victoria and it involves some complex planning which is why we have engaged the services of the state’s peaking planning body the Victorian Planning Agency. “They are the experts in this field and we have been guided by their recommendations in taking these steps.” The draft amendment also includes the inclusion of a Development Contributions Plan to fund key infrastructure such as roads, bridges, community facilities and active recreation spaces as the area grows. The motion passed at the March council meeting will also seek an authorisation from the Minister for an extended exhibition process and that an information session be held with interested parties, community and affected land owners prior to the exhibition period. Wodonga Council received a $250,000 Victorian Government grant for the planning of the growth corridor.

Big bite of the future By Monique Kuzeff Evolve orthodontist John Brabant’s SunSmiles Program recently received a $10,000 grant from the Wrigley Company Foundation’s 2017 Community Service Grants. Some $108,000 was distributed to as many as 13 volunteer organisations that are providing oral care and education to disadvantaged communities across Australia. The money will go directly in to the SunSmiles Program to help with the purchasing of dental products for the puppet dental shows in schools. The SunSmiles Program focuses on dental education, oral health promotion and fluoride varnish application and delivers this through an engaging use of puppets. The students are taught how to brush their teeth, informed about nutrition, and a fluoride varnish is applied to their teeth which cuts the decay rate by 43 per cent. Dr Brabant said Wrigley’s believes that access to quality dental care and the basics of oral hygiene are an important building block in the health of the nation. According to the National Child Oral Health Survey, 25.5 per cent of children aged between five and 10 years old have never received treatment for their dental decay. Children with a low socio-economic background and Indigenous children have significantly higher rates of dental decay. “17.7 per cent of children aged 12 and under are living in poverty,” Dr Brabant said. Dr Brabant said the state and federal governments were “failing miserably” in the fight against dental disease. “The SunSmiles Program could change the lives of a generation of primary school kids and save the government billions of dollars in the long run but because of Health Department bureaucrats who sit on their hands and fail to cut red tape in order for achievement to occur, nothing happens and the children of Australia are suffering. “Prevention of the disease is far less expensive than treating the disease, reduces the pain and fear of dentistry and reduces associated medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. “The SunSmiles Program is simple, cost effective, achievable, proven, and gives the students a dental experience in their own environment with their friends. It works.”
But to go statewide and nationally it needs government support and dental manpower, Dr Brabant said. “The government already has the framework of community clinics with the staff that could be utilised to implement this amazing program. “The time has come for government to stop supporting a drill, fill and extract dental health philosophy and prevent the disease in the first place.”

Local Sport Riding wave of success The skiing club's final event for the 2016-'17 season was a huge success with record entries, great weather and top-class performances across all divisions. With near-perfect conditions and a field of over 40 elite slalom skiers, the club was ecstatic with the performances, the crowd and the expectations of skiers qualifying for upcoming state and national titles. In the junior events the strength of the local club shone through, with Harrison Laws and Lachy Butlin battling out the podium finish, with Laws taking the gold at the end of the event. Daniel Finnimore once again showed his class, winning the under 10 boys slalom and at the same time
breaking the NSW slalom record once again. Daniel is now off to Perth for the national titles over Easter this year. The Girls Junior Division was a close event with Chloe Keeley from Lake Cargelligo taking the slalom event. Local star Grace Butlin skied well and will join Daniel Finnimore in a trip to Perth later this year. ACT skier Jennifer Saldo also skied well with a strong performance in the Junior Girls event. The development program at the local club was on show with great performances from Reece Finnimore, Sammy Lawes and Mitchell Laws. The Open Men again was hotly contested with some big names attending including Australian record
holder John Adams. However it was local star David Finnimore just holding off a strong challenge from Mitch Barber Wagga and Greg Keeley from Lake Cargelligo. Up and coming local Darrin Butlin and Matt Lawes skied well, with Butlin winning a ticket to compete in Perth at the Australian national titles later this year. Good crowds in attendance with the new Malibu TXI on show treated the visitors to a great weekend of waterskiing. Chief organiser Dave Finnimore was thrilled with the event as our local skiers now start the program running through to state titles and nationals in the 2017 season.

Nine-year-old Mikayla Talbot took out gold in the under nine girls long jump at the Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships early this month. The Jindera Public School student jumped 3.85m to take first place, 11cm ahead of her closest competitor. The little athlete remained humble when talking about her win. “I just want to thank my mum and dad, my coach and Albury Little Athletics. I’m so happy,” she said. A dozen athletes from Albury Little Athletics took part in the State Track and Field Championships at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne. Albury High student Mitchall Anderson, 15, took out silver in discus and bronze in shotput in the hotly contested U15B age group. It’s the icing on the cake for Ethan, who is one of only 11 boys in the state to qualify for a spot in the Victorian team for the Australian Little Athletics Championships to be held at Sydney's Olympic Park in April. Albury Little Athletics President Brett Schofield was ecstatic with the weekend’s results. “It has been a great weekend for Albury Little Aths with all our athletes getting some great results and fantastic personal bests. Their hard work has paid off and the club couldn’t be more proud,” Mr Schofield said. All children aged 5-15, from beginner to advanced ability, are able to join Albury Little Athletics.
