Senior members of the Comancheros outlaw motorcycle gang - including a Lyndhurst man - have been arrested during a series of early-morning police raids mainly in Melbourne’s south-east on 14 March. Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana said a “very senior” Comancheros member was arrested at a house at Tobin Way, Lyndhurst where at least two vehicles were seized by police. Asst Comm Fontana said that the OMCGs “don’t stop” despite the arrest of “key players”. “They seem to be able to recruit and continue their activity, but we’ll continue to pursue them,” he said. Sixteen men and women had been charged as a result of the raids, including a 35-year-old Lyndhurst man facing 15 offences including trafficking a large commercial quantity of meth, inciting another to recklessly endanger life, conspiracy to commit criminal damage by fire and possessing an unregistered handgun. A 31-year-old Cranbourne North man was charged with offences including aggravated burglary, criminal damage by fire and kidnapping. The pair were remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 15 March. Three other arrested people were expected to be charged on summons. Twenty-five homes, a business and a factory were raided in suburbs across Melbourne, including Berwick, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Cranbourne North, Cranbourne West, Dandenong South, Beaconsfield, Keysborough, Clyde North, Lysterfield South and Eumemmerring. Police say they seized several items including vehicles, a firearm, jewellery, cash as well as cocaine, methylamphet-

Council in crisis By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey councillor Steve Beardon has denied wrong-doing after sensationally resigning amid a council investigation into an argument with a female councillor at Casey Civic Centre on 7 March. He has called on Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins to step in while Mayor Sam Aziz said the council investigation would continue and also threatened legal action. “I did nothing wrong,” he said on Friday, “which has been confirmed by another councillor and I encourage others to come forward and speak up about it.” The complainant, Cr Milla Gilic, described herself as being left in shock and unable to stop crying after Cr Beardon allegedly unleashed “hateful”, “aggressive” and “threatening” abuse about her co-ward councillor Rosalie Crestani late after a dramatic council meeting. Cr Flannery, the only third party witness, said he did not hear a substantial part of the abuse alleged by Cr Gilic. He believed Cr Beardon would have been exonerated by the investigation. According to Cr Beardon, the complainant was “abusing” Cr Rex Flannery before he stepped in. Cr Beardon said he then “questioned” Cr Gilic about why he should apologise to Cr Crestani for taking issue with her Rise Up Australia membership during the council meeting. Cr Beardon resigned late the following day after the council launched Code of Conduct and

workplace safety investigations into the incident. “I invite the Minister for Local government should come down an investigate if they want to take it further but I am happy to leave to them; I don’t need this.” His resignation comes just four months after he was elected for a four-year term in October, and his second early resignation as a councillor. He quit just 37 days into his 2003 term after councillors passed resolutions over his “unacceptable conduct”. The resultant by-election more than a decade ago cost nearly $60,000. Cr Beardon told Star News that councillors had sought to stop him from speaking out on both occasions. “Why should I stay?” he said, adding that his version of events was verified by Cr Flannery. During the meeting there was a heated debate on Cr Crestani’s proposed sister-city relationship with an Israeli city. Cr Beardon’s attempts to link Cr Crestani’s Rise Up Australia membership were ruled out of order by Cr Aziz, and Cr Crestani demanded an apology from him. Mayor Sam Aziz also ejected Cr Beardon from the chamber for 15 minutes for failing to sit down while the mayor spoke, and led a reprimand motion against him for criticising the mayor as well as a proposed chaplaincy program in the media. “I challenge anyone to put themselves in this situation and remain,”

Steve Beardon has resigned four months into his term as a Casey councillor. Cr Beardon later said. “It took every bit of strength. I had to put my ward first, but I can’t win. “Thank you to all the staff who have contacted me. Thank you to our friends and locals who support us.” Cr Beardon called for Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins to “step in” to the situation. Mayor Sam Aziz said the investigation into Cr Beardon would continue and raised the possibility of criminal charges. Cr Aziz said it was the second time Cr Beardon had resigned after being “brought to account”. The induction of a replacement would be “quite costly” even though they will be chosen by countback and not a by-election, he said. “It’s a pattern of behaviour. Every time he’s brought to account, he can’t take the heat. “If he really cares about his residents as he says he does, he should stay away from local government.

“He’s absolutely not fit to serve in public office in any capacity.” Cr Aziz said complaints had been lodged by three female councillors against Cr Beardon. Cr Beardon’s alleged abuse of Cr Crestani and her family on 7 March was “corroborated” and “verifiable”, he said. In the reprimand motion, Cr Beardon was condemned “in the strongest possible terms” for “ignorant, ill-informed, biased, inappropriate and factually incorrect comments” made to the media. After the meeting, Cr Beardon said he’d continue to “speak out” on issues even if he risked being suspended from the council for two weeks. He said by speaking up, he’d made the community aware of issues like the council’s China trip and the cost of the chaplaincy program. “Yes I will speak up on behalf of my ward, and will canvass opinion and will raise issues on behalf of the community. “Why I am elected otherwise?” He didn’t deny a claim made in council that he’d told a female chaplain that he wouldn’t have boycotted a meeting with her if he’d known she was blonde and good looking. Cr Beardon later said it was in context of him being “condescending back” to the chaplain, who was trying to “educate” him on Christianity. A replacement councillor will be elected by a countback of the October 2016 election results. It will be conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission.

Rude awakening A young woman was awoken from a Sunday sleep in Cranbourne East over the weekend when an unknown man tried to break into her house. The woman was asleep in a front room of the house on Stark Circuit, about 5.30pm, when she heard knocking on the front door that she ignored. A short time later, she heard noises coming from the back of her property and upon investigation found a man trying to get into the house by breaking a window. When the man saw someone was home and inside the house, he fled from the property over a side fence and made a getaway in a small blue hatchback car, along Haswell Street. Police believe the getaway car was being driven by a female accomplice. Casey Crime Investigation Unit is asking any witnesses contact Detective Senior Constable Brad Coller on 9705 3111.

Two wanted over suspicious actions Police from the Casey Crime Investigation Unit are seeking two people who have engaged in suspicious behaviour inside a shop. About 1pm on Tuesday 7 February, a male and a female entered a business in the Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre. The then engaged in some unusual behaviour within the store which drew the attention of staff who then called police. Police would not elaborate on the nature of the suspicious activity. Beardon’s shock resignation - what next? By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Council will have a new face at the table in under a month, following the shock resignation of Councillor Steve Beardon on Wednesday 8 March. Cr Beardon tendered his resignation to Casey Council CEO Mike Tyler on Wednesday, following an alleged argument between Cr Beardon and a female member of council. The alleged argument took place on Tuesday 7 March, following a council meeting where Cr Beardon was officially reprimanded and two investigations were launched into his conduct over recent months. Casey Council announced a countback of votes from the October 2016 general election would be used instead of a by-election to determine who will replace Cr Bear-

don as one of two representatives of the Mayfield Ward. The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) has confirmed while no date has been set for countback, the law requires a replacement councillor to be selected within 28 days of a resignation. The VEC said a notice regarding Cr Beardon’s resignation would be published Thursday 16 March and the countback would be at least 14 days after this. The ballot papers from the October 2016 election that elected Cr Beardon to office will be included in the countback. The likely candidates to replace Cr Beardon that received the highest number of first preference votes are former councillor Gary Rowe and candidates Rob Ward, Suzanne Lokot, and Shabnam Safa.

Gary Rowe was the last candidate to be ousted behind Cr Beardon in October 2016 when Cr Beardon achieved just 92 more votes than Mr Rowe on the 30th vote count. Mr Rowe launched legal proceedings against the VEC in December 2016 because he was denied a recount by the returning officer that was dismissed by a judge on the morning of Thursday 9 March. “I have been in discussions with a judge and the VEC and in the end the judge said that probably the margin was too great and he wasn’t going to grant a recount anyway,” Mr Rowe said. When asked if he would return to Casey Council if elected following the upcoming countback, Mr Rowe was noncommittal. “I haven’t given it much thought,” he said.

“I would have to look at what I’m doing professionally and if it’s going to suit what I need to do.” “I would always love to serve but I question the process of councils and the bureaucracy of councils.” Meanwhile, the resignation of Steve Beardon leaves Cr Amanda Stapledon as the sole representative of Mayfield ward. “I’m not daunted by that,” she said. “I am committed to representing my ward, to the best of my ability and am up to date with most things so I am happy to respond where I am needed.” Casey Council was contacted regarding the cost of inducting a new councillor and the impact on public perception of the council following Cr Beardon’s resignation, but declined to comment.

Smith eyes arts expansion By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Councillor Wayne Smith has put forward a bold new strategy to bring more performing arts to the City of Casey. At a council meeting on Tuesday 7 March, Cr Smith raised two notices regarding The Factory performing arts centre in Cranbourne and the Windmill Theatre Company. The two motions were carried at the council meeting and will have council investigating expanding the size of The Factory and meeting with Windmill Theatre Company to explore establishing their base of operations in the City of Casey. Cr Smith said he was very proud of his involvement in having The Factory established but said due to the growing size of the region it was desperate need of expanding. “I was a driving force behind it originally but over the last few years it has become obvious we need more space,” he said. “There is just not enough time and space for everyone who wants to use it.” Cr Smith has asked Casey Council to receive a report by the first meeting in May that outlines the opportunities to include a new workshop space, extra garage space and rehearsal space to the existing structure. The second motion raised by Cr Smith asks for a meeting to be arranged between council and representatives of the Windmill Theatre Company to discuss the group storing sets and having a permanent rehearsal space in the City of Casey. Windmill Theatre Company currently have their set production based in Cardinia Shire, some rehearsal spaces in Casey and their main performance space at The Drum theatre in Dandenong.

Windmill Theatre Company president Sean Van Geyzel said that he and his group were looking forward to exploring their options for basing the company in City of Casey. “We are looking at where are we are

going in the future and Casey is definitely one of the areas we are looking at,” he said. “One of the things we need to do to determine what is in the best interest of us and our supporter base and how we can most reach the biggest section of the communities in Greater Dandenong and Casey.” “Casey is a strong growth area and with big new state of the art facilities at Bunjil Place.” Mr Van Geyzel said while ‘The Factory’ in Cranbourne would be one op-

Picture: SGS Pike said. “While we are only looking at the broad overview of tertiary educated and full time employed people, it is a staggering difference.” “We were surprised by this and how it is particularly pronounced in the growth corridors and outer parts of Melbourne.” The gap between the genders in the South-East Region doesn’t only affect income with jobs requiring a university degree being disproportionately being held by men. Over 30 per cent of women who had a university degree in both Casey and Dandenong were working in jobs that did not require that level of education. “Women are able to work in jobs that require the education but are not being employed in those roles in

growth areas,” Ms Pike said. Ms Pike said the consequences affect the wider community and not just those with a university degree looking for work and can further entrench employment inequality for women. “One of the things we observe is when you have tertiary educated women and they are employed in a position that doesn’t need that education; there is a flow on effect,” she said. “It affects others that would be applying for those jobs, then they have to take a job that is less secure, with less pay.” There are many factors that contribute to the gap in job access and income for men and women in the Casey and surrounding regions, but Ms Pike said there were a few things

that made a big difference. “A big part of it is about knowledge intensive industries not being in those areas,” she said. “A more diverse array employment opportunity would definitely help.” “When we talk about this, we have to talk about having access to those jobs through public transport.” “If it only takes you half an hour to travel to the CBD when there are no jobs locally, there are no issues, but in these growth areas the travel time is really substantial trying to get to the knowledge clusters.” SGS will continue to analyse employment data to get a greater understanding of productivity in Melbourne growth areas in the coming months.

Women armed with a university degree in the South-East are at a severe disadvantage in finding fulltime employment compared to men in the region. The data used for the research focused on tertiary-educated people in full-time employment, and showed that women in Melbourne’s growth areas were both paid less and have less full-time employment than men. The preliminary research undertaken by planning and economics firm SGS Economics and Planning was released on International Women’s Day Wednesday 8 March. Senior Consultant for SGS Lucinda Pike said the research came about when the firm realised there was a gap to fill in productivity data. “We were discussing International Women’s Day in the office, and we do a lot of work on productivity, and we have found there is not much data looking at the gender gap and difference in productivity,” Ms Pike said. “We have this sense of how it works across the board, but there is very little that looks at the difference between genders.” What the researchers found was that women in growth areas are much more adversely affected by being further away from the knowledge centres of the city and inner suburbs. Only 55 - 65 per cent of tertiaryeducated women were working full time, earning over $1000 per week in Casey, compared to 78-85 per cent of their male counterparts. “This is a very significant difference between men and women earning a thousand dollars a week,” Ms

Letters Foreign relations I welcome an investigation into the alleged abuse committed by Steve Beardon. If the allegations are true then may he receive the appropriate justice from the relevant authorities. If Mr Beardon did indeed do this then he deserves what’s coming regardless of the validity of his points. On one point I tend to agree with him. Cr Crestani is an active and senior member within the RUAP. The RUAP shares the same address as Catch the Fire ministries in Hallam and has the same leader, Danny Nalliah. Just recently (January 2017), Catch the Fire was stripped of its charitable status by the Australian Government after it was found to be raising funds for Rise Up Australia. Hence Cr Beardon’s statement that: “I can surmise it’s to do with religious tendencies after Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani raising an urgent motion for the council to hold discussions with the Israeli city Ofakim for a possible sister-city relationship” being ruled out of order on “relevance and fact” by Cr Aziz seems peculiar to me. RUAP policy towards Israel is being enacted by Cr Crestani under the guise of a sister city agreement. Why it is a matter of urgent business is beyond me. Nevertheless the argument to support such an arrangement is weak at best. Australia has globally recognised bodies and authorities in the field of agriculture and farming economics, eg ANU and AARES. “Australian farmers are among the most efficient and best practice operators on the planet,” DFAT and OECD reports claim. Surely Cr Crestani should be focusing her talents and resources to local community issues such as roads, rates, rubbish, respect and reserves before embarking on grandiose global arrangements that provide little benefit for those within our own local community. Leave these kinds of relationship arrangements to the Federal Government. And before I am accused of being an antisemite, let me add that as a Christian I am committed to supporting Israel and its people.

We write to you with regards to what we see is an over-sized development proposed by a developer trying to maximise a project with little or no consideration for the residents who currently live in this court. This seven-unit development provides for three of the units each having four bedrooms while the other four units each have three bedrooms with provision for two car parks only per unit. As you would know it is not unusual to have your siblings living with their parents until their late thirties nowadays and the fact that this development only provides for 14 car spaces, we think Casey planning should have a closer look at what they’re about to approve. While we understand the developer only needs to provide 14 spaces, we believe allowing a development of this size to proceed in the bottom of a court without sufficient future car parking spaces onsite is ridiculous. With only 14 car spaces available where do you think their siblings will park their cars when you consider there could be a need for an additional seven to 14 spaces in reality. This is where we as residents have grave concerns because we reside within the immediate area at the bottom of the court and see the problems that arise from time to time We have experienced times when too many cars have been parked within the bowl of the court with no thought, parking over driveways, parking all over the nature strips and blocking rubbish trucks and other service suppliers. The problem as we see it is simple.

If Casey planning don’t take a stance on over development we as residents will have to endure the arguments and angst going on for years to come. Let us be the first local council to ban the use of MSG as a flavour enhancer in foods. Penalties enforced on producers of foods who use MSG could be the next step in protecting the residents of Casey. I believe MSG is harmful. I don’t eat from restaurants if I know that the food is laced with MSG. I ask the restaurant owner in order to protect myself because I can taste when the flavour enhancer is used and I experience an abnormal reaction to MSG. A Narre Warren man has been jailed for at least four years for firing eight bullets into an inhabited brothel during a driveby shooting in Caulfield South last year. Patrick O’Kelly, 27, had pleaded guilty at the Victorian County Court to 15 charges including trafficking ice, car theft, recklessly endangering people and being a prohibited person using a firearm. About 2.55am on 30 March, O’Kelly sat in the back seat of a stolen Porsche, wound down the window and fired eight shots from a 0.223-calibre rifle. Seven of the rounds struck the front of the Club 859 brothel, with one shattering a shower screen inside and narrowly missing a female worker. Another ricocheted from the building into a nearby tram shelter. At the time, there were six people inside the premises. Inside the Porsche that afternoon, police seized ammunition, a hand-written note with the brothel’s address, a key to a stolen Navara ute, an imitation firearm as well as more than 65 grams of meth. They also seized cannabis, GHB and cocaine from the car. In a search on O’Kelly’s home, police discovered a stolen double-barrel shotgun and cartridges, a samurai sword and numchucks, and stolen number-plates.

At the time, O’Kelly was a disqualified driver with prior driving-while-suspended, drug and firearm convictions. He had been “off my head” on an ice habit of up to two grams a day, blaming it for his “stupidity” and anti-social impulses. During his 335 days in pre-sentence custody, O’Kelly had become free of his addiction and depressive mood disorder, his lawyer had argued. In sentencing on 10 March, Judge Susan Pullen said O’Kelly showed some remorse for his “extreme act of violence”. Judge Pullen was however troubled by his lack of clear explanations for his offending or the pre-planning, other than intending to give the brothel occupants and owners a “message”. The judge also noted O’Kelly relapsed into drug use and breached a community corrections order within a month of being released from jail in 2015. She was therefore “guarded” when assessing the accused’s prospects for rehabilitation and commitment to drug treatment. She jailed O’Kelly for five years, 10 months and 14 days with a four-year non-parole period. His driving licence was disqualified for five years.

Premier listening to the SES By Victoria Stone-Meadows Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews took some time out of his busy schedule to visit the Narre Warren SES on Wednesday 15 March and hear their stories about volunteering in their community. Mr Andrews was invited to the Narre Warren SES by Cranbourne MP Jude Perera as part of Mr Perera’s efforts in pushing for a SES unit to be established in Cranbourne. Mr Andrews and Mr Perera were given a tour of the Narre Warren facilities and heard from members about the difficulties in covering the entire Casey area from a single unit. While neither Mr Andrews nor Mr Perera made any funding commitment in regards to a Cranbourne SES unit, Mr Andrews was optimistic about find-

ing the money for one. “We often don’t say thank you enough to our SES volunteers, and it’s important to acknowledge the great work they do in protecting the community.” Mr Andrews said. “It’s (an SES unit in Cranbourne) something we are looking very closely at, and Jude has made sure I am aware of what is going on down here.” “I am confident it has been a very well argued position, and while I can’t give a timeline, the State Budget will be delivered in the first week of May, and hopefully we will be able to deliver some positive news.” Star News reported in February this year that Casey Council had decided on a site in Cyril Beechey Lane as a possible location for a Cranbourne SES unit.

Unit controller for Narre Warren SES Clinton Brown said another unit in the Casey area would greatly improve their capacity to serve and help the growing population of the region. “It’s really about trying to service the ever growing southern corridor, specifically the Warneet, Clyde, Pearcedale, and surrounding areas,” he said. “In our current capacity, it takes us about 30 or 40 minutes even with red and blue flashing lights on the main roads to get to a job in the southern parts of Casey.” Mr Perera is currently running an online petition for those in the Casey Community to show their support for a SES unit in Cranbourne that can be found at www.thismatters.org.au/sesforcranbourne.

The State Government will not purchase land in Kooweerup for a third Melbourne airport, contrary to media reports. It was reported across several metropolitan news publications on Tuesday that the government had pledged to buy land for a new airport, likely to cost $5 billion, in the next five years. It was also speculated air services in the South East would begin by 2030, with the airport cited as “a key feature” of the government’s Plan Melbourne 2017-’50. However, the State Government said it had made no such commitment. A spokesperson for Planning Minister Richard Wynne said Plan Melbourne was a blueprint for population growth, and included “early planning works” for a third airport in the event one was needed in the future. Star News understands a SouthEast airport has been on the state’s radar since 2002, but development would only occur if warranted by demand. It is also understood any land for a potential airport would not be purchased by the government or through state funding, but rather through the private sector. However, Plan Melbourne does recommend the government preserves the future option of another airport through “incorporating planning protection for flight paths and noise contours, and the alignment for a connection to the rail line at Clyde”.

The government spokesperson said the project was not yet needed, but signalled planning was on the cards. “Melbourne Airport and Avalon Airport still have capacity to take more flights, but nevertheless we won’t make the same mistakes Sydney has made,” the spokesperson said. “We need to plan ahead for aviation to avoid being blind-sided as Victoria grows.” Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen said council welcomed a State Government commitment to identify and select a suitable south east region location for an airport. “Our region will continue to experience significant growth over the coming years, and SEM (South East Melbourne Group of Councils) believes the development and operation of an airport would be a major economic and employment driver for our communities,” councillor Owen said. City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said there had been discussion about a possible airport in the Casey-Cardinia region for more than 40 years. “There would clearly be economic benefits to the Casey-Cardinia region by the establishment of the proposed airport,” councillor Aziz said. “Not only would it be convenient for residents, but it will also generate local jobs and investment in the region.” Cr Aziz said the City of Casey looked forwarded to more information about the proposal from the State Government in the future.

Farm World marks 50th This year marks the 50th anniversary of Farm World at Lardner Park and Victoria’s premier agricultural event is striding into the future with a strong list of more than 900 exhibitors from Thursday 30 March until Sunday 2 April. Demonstrations and presentations will cover native foods, fibre, profile chef cooking, home composting and much more. This year will see a little nostalgia as Farm World reflects on the journey so far, celebrating the long-term loyalty of machinery exhibitors such as Vin Rowe, Gendore, R.E.N. and Alto Motors which were present in the founding years of Farm World, which was formerly known as The Gippsland Field Days. Still exhibiting today, they join a long list of national and regional farm machinery exhibitors with new model releases, wide ranges of stocks and onsite experts. BJ Bearings, a long-term exhibitor at Farm World, has increased its association by taking up naming rights for what was previously known as the General Interest Pavilion - now the BJ Bearings Pavilion - so visitors should make sure they check out the fantastic product range and advice. Careers are tough at top By Casey Neill Two strong, successful women spoke out about busting gender barriers at a Springvale breakfast. Jennifer Osbourne and Yassmin Abdel-Magied were guests at the Showcasing Women in Business breakfast at Highways on Thursday 9 March which marked International Women’s Day. “Today’s theme is women pushing the boundaries,” SEBN manager Sandra George said. “You’re all outstanding women. “Believe in yourselves, encourage and support other women and have the confidence to have a go and don’t ever be afraid to be smart.” Ms Osbourne, the Organic Growers Group (OGG) manager, started out as a primary school teacher. “I guess you’d call me a late bloomer,” she said. She became a retail greengrocer and then a link between farmers and retailers. “Little did I realise at the time that I was slipping into a boys club,” she said. Ms Osbourne survived bullying at the hands of a man in her first role and moved on to OGG - owned and run by women. “I’d finally found somewhere to put my drive and ambition,” she said. “My job is to procure the produce and schedule it for arrival in time to sell.” One farmer told her that the best thing about dealing with OGG was no testosterone, “just good old-fashioned common sense”. But on the other side, she’s found that a male boss who makes a tough decision is praised as a great manager. “In my experience, when a female makes such a call, she’s just a bitch,” she said. She also recalled upsetting a young male trader. “He puffed his chest, faced up to me and raised his fist,” she said. “I had to call his bluff.” Since then she’s laughed off criticism and spent less time and energy worrying about what others think. “Don’t expect them to like you you have to be tough,” she said. “That became my biggest challenge. “I’m a marshmallow.

Yassmin Abdel-Magied speaks at the SEBN Showcasing Women in Business breakfast. “I’ve had to toughen up.” Ms Abdel-Magied dreamed of becoming a Formula One driver after watching movie Catch That Kid at age 13. “But I’m a Sudanese woman who likes to eat, that wasn’t going to happen,” she said. “I could design the car.” She was one of seven girls and 300 boys in her mechanical engineering course. “I became one of the boys because that’s how I knew how to survive,” she said. “I had no woman in any senior position above me that could show me a different example.” After university, she spent a year

in the UK following her Formula One dream but returned to Australia and landed a job on oil and gas rigs. “I was the first girl they hired in my department in Australia, which was odd because it was 2012,” she said. “I tried to be one of the boys.” But they were quick to point out that she wasn’t one. Ms Abdel-Magied spoke about marginalisation of women in the workplace. She’d walk onto a rig and the boys would be told “no more swearing, there’s a woman present”. It highlighted her difference and told others they had to adjust their behaviour when she was around.

She would be handed the pen to take minutes in meetings, and she’d be asked if she was married while a man alongside her was asked about his career experience. “You are seen first as a woman and not an engineer,” she said. Ms Abdel-Magied voiced ideas that were ignored, but then adopted minutes later after being raised by a man. When she walks onto a rig, people expect that she can’t drill a hole until she proves she can. “Men are deemed competent unless proven otherwise,” she said. “Women are deemed incompetent unless proven otherwise.” One of her latest projects is Mumtaza, which means ‘she’s excellent’ in

Arabic and is an organisation about empowering women of colour. Ms Abdel-Magied urged her audience to utilise sponsorship - to ask for help to open doors they can’t open themselves. “And who can you sponsor? What privilege do you have?” she said. “Never underestimate the impact a single individual - you - can make. “Each and every one of you have the capacity to change the world around you. “Embrace that, lean into it and good luck.” The next SEBN Showcasing Women in Business event will be a lunch on Tuesday 27 June.

New opening for manufacturing sees jobs and growth By Casey Neill Jobs and growth - one Dandenong South manufacturer is embodying the catch cry in a big way. Hilton Manufacturing needs up to 25 new employees to cope with an expected 25 per cent growth in business over the next four to five months. “Last time we had 25 per cent growth we were a business about a third of the size,” managing director Todd Hartley said. “We probably had a flat couple of years. “Over previous years we were more focused on delivering the product on time than looking at our infrastructure and making sure that we’re keeping up with progress.” Hilton hired a new CEO last year. “He took a step back to take a look at our infrastructure and what’s required to deal with our next period of growth,” Mr Hartley said. “From there, it freed up a few of us in the company that have gone out and worked on the relationships, looked at new industries, looked at new processes that will equate to new work.

‘Purple Army’ marches in By Russell Bennett There’s a mighty purple army mobilising behind 10-year-old Casey Cavaliers basketballer, Ava Beck. The Berwick Primary School student is showing the world that living with epilepsy won’t hold her back, and that what she lacks in physical stature she makes up for tenfold in sheer grit, toughness and a determination to succeed. Ava was told she had epilepsy when she was just nine and since then has had many seizures, some prolonged. The first of those came after a representative basketball tryout, as her mum Lisa explains. “She had quite a few seizures - we didn’t know what was going on - and then she was diagnosed with epilepsy,” she said. “All throughout last year she had a really difficult time. “She was in and out of hospital a lot - and missed a lot of school - but she continued playing basketball, both domestic and representative." Lisa said that apart from close friends and family, Ava’s team mates were the first people she told about her diagnosis. Since then, they’ve rallied around her both on the court and off. “When she was sick and in and out of hospital, all her teammates were always coming to visit her and they started wearing purple,” Lisa explained. Purple Day - on 26 March - is a global initiative dedicated to raising epilepsy awareness. It was founded in 2008 by a then nine-year-old - Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia in Canada. Motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy, Cassidy started Purple Day in an effort to get people talking about the condition and to let those impacted by seizures know they’re not alone. Now Ava - who plays Under 12s for the Berwick Panthers and Cavaliers, and also Under 14s for the Panthers is pushing forward with the cause at a local level. It was just a month ago that she decided she wanted to do something for Purple Day. She could have easily chosen to

They’ll be selling merchandise and holding competitions, holding purple face painting stalls, and the coaches will be wearing purple wigs all day.

The Timbarra, Beaconhills and Casey basketball stadiums will be taking part on the day. Ava was never going to be a basketballer - she was going to be a dancer, until she fell in love with the game watching her sister playing it. “I think it’s great that she chose basketball because it’s one big community,” Lisa said. “Both her clubs - the Berwick Panthers and Casey Cavaliers - have really got on board.” To this stage, Ava and her ‘Purple Army’ have sold close to more than $4000 worth of merchandise to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria, and they’ve also registered the Purple Round with the nationwide Epilepsy Action Australia. “There are a few associations that support epilepsy but we chose the foundation because it’s a not-for-profit

and, from day one, they’re been all about advocacy and education and training,” Lisa said. “When Ava was first diagnosed, they’re the ones who provided her with a case worker, who got us on to all the resources that were available. “She has emergency medication that she has to be given to stop her seizures so anyone looking after her needs to be trained in administering that medication. “The Epilepsy Foundation have provided a nurse to come out to her school and also to come out to our family, some of our friends, and some of our basketball parents. “With that training it means that on the weekends when the girls all play their games and then have a sleepover, Ava can go. She’s missed out in the past because she can’t go if the parents don’t know how to look after a seizure.”

Big things planned for ‘The U’ in first division debut By Russell Bennett Casey Cardinia United is about to embark on its first season in Gridiron Victoria’s first division, and the club is determined to make an immediate and lasting impression. ‘The U’ is an amalgamation of the Berwick Miners and two-time reigning Division 2 champions, the Pakenham Silverbacks, and will this season be bolstered by a number of former Gippsland Gladiators. Paul Tindall, who coached the Silverbacks to their first title, has returned to the helm this season - replacing last year’s championship-winning coach Mel Martin, who has moved on to Division 1 powerhouse, the Croydon Rangers.

There will be plenty of fresh faces at The U, which will be without former Silverbacks stars Chevy Edwards, Adam Kolinski, and star import quarterback Kevin Russell to name a few. But they’ll all be united behind Tindall under one aim - sustained success in the competition’s top tier. “From what you’re looking at with rookies and bits and pieces, we could be looking at about 60 guys from the three clubs (Silverbacks, Miners, and Gladiators),” Tindall said. “It’s a great pool to reach from as a coach - to see there are 10 guys playing for a spot. I don’t care how long you’ve been playing for, if I think a player is better than you, he’s going in your position straight away.”

Tindall had to step away from his coaching role last season due to family commitments, but he was never far from the action. “I’d volunteer at games,” he said. “There’s no better place to watch a game from than standing on the sideline doing the chain crew. “I got to see a few things that I’ll address in the pre-season that, as a coach, I wouldn’t have personally put up with and I won’t. I’m sure some people won’t be happy, but we’re stepping up (to Division 1). The guys are going to be more committed and ready to go. You can’t afford to be casual in Division 1.” Tindall said the The U couldn’t afford to let complacency creep in, par-

ticularly after the bulk of the playing list was a part of such a dominant season with the Silverbacks last year. “It’s going to be about dedication from the players, acceptance of the playbook and a willingness to want to learn - to want to put in the time,” Tindall said. “With the way I run my training and the way we’re running our playbook there’s no room for complacency. “If you’re happy to pay your money to the club, suit up, and sit on the sidelines for the whole day by all means we’re happy to have you - you can run water out to the boys. But if you’re not going to put the effort in at training, learn the playbook, or compete at a higher level than you did last year, then you’re going to struggle to get

game time.” CCU president and Silverbacks cofounder Richie Howlett said the club was exploring its options in potentially bringing across an import prior to the season. That player could well be a quarterback. If that was to happen, The U could only dream of a result like the one they received with Russell at the helm last season. But first thing’s first - being competitive every week, and having a chance to win every game. “This will be the fourth year the club has played, and they’ve probably gone through four different playbooks,” Tindall said. “It’s time for the club to try and find its own identity now.”

Although disappointed to have lost their first final as a group, Keogh said that his chargers have exceeded expectation and raised the bar for the future. “We were pleased to make the finals - it’s a great achievement considering where we were, but once you get there you get excited and hungry, because you don’t know when you’ll get back there again,” he said. “I think we’re still off the pace a little bit from the best four sides, but we’re not far away - the improvement has been significant, but we need to start again next season and that’s the challenge of the competition - I hope in a way this loss drives us in our journey forward. “Next year there’s going to be expectation we can keep improving and get back into the finals - why can’t we get better and keep improving? “I’m backing in the same people next year - in Round 1 next year, why can’t we have a similar looking side?” On day one of their clash at Schramms Reserve, the Swans’ top order was skittled via some tight bowling but a helpful pitch, which seemed to spit off a length and cause several moments of uncertainty. Putting a settled line-up on the park will be the biggest challenge for new Doveton coach Aaron Davey after the club secured some top-line talent during the off-season. The Doves have bolstered their big-man department with the return of Frank D’Agostino and become more potent in front of goal with former Essendon livewire Alwyn Davey joining Clayton McCartney from Rumbalara in the Murray League as a dangerous duo at the feet of new key forward Taylor Joyce. Now all the Doves need to do is keep their cattle on the park. After a five-year hiatus the Doves have played finals football for the last two years despite a high-turnover of players. They used 45 players when finishing fifth in 2015 before using a South East Football Netball League-high 48 players on their way to finishing fourth last year - bundled out on both occasions by Beaconsfield in the elimination final. Reigning premier Cranbourne required just 34 players last year with 13 playing every game for the season. By comparison the Doves had just one - Jordan Temopoulos. It’s a massive discrepancy and one that Davey and new fitness coach Geoff Collie will be keen to address as preparations build for 2017.

Win sniffed out By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 & 2 SEMI-FINAL REVIEW TURF 1 Right on the stroke of the Christmas break, Mordialloc weren’t even in calculations to finish inside the top-four. It seemed the Bloodhounds would just be one of those clubs making up the numbers. But in stunning fashion, they are now grand final bound, and after crushing the top-placed Hallam-Kalora Park away from home, the expectations are rising that a premiership at Ben Kavanagh Reserve is on its way. When Bloodhounds skipper Stuart Squires elected to bat, the Hawks got their tail up, skittling the top-order to leave them hanging precariously at 4/51 then 5/67. But when Chathura Athukorala entered the ground ready to bat, the game tipped on its head - in what was a matchdefining and brave 112-run partnership with Damith Mapa Ralage, the Bloodhounds didn’t look back. When Athukorala (66) was eventually run-out, it didn’t stop Mapa Ralage (95 not out) from playing one of the season’s special knocks, guiding his side to an imposing and match-winning 9/261 at day’s end. Hawks’ skipper Steve Gilmour (3/87) was a shining light on day one, bowling a whopping 25-overs in warm conditions, but there was simply not enough contributors. And it seemed that the Bloodhounds’ impenetrable momentum would not be broken when Squires broke through for two early wickets on day two, but a 125run partnership between Jagveer Hayer (56) and Jordan Hammond (80 not out) had the Hawks in the box-seat. The score was 2/139 - what could possibly go wrong for the Hawks? Well Ian Daniel (5/36) took four quick wickets before anyone at the ground could blink, and in utterly stunning fashion, saw his Bloodhounds dismantle the top side for just 157.

The Bloodhounds can now enjoy a week off before they play in the grand final on 25 March. Down at Park Oval, an absolutely stellar century to star all-rounder Kaushyla Weeraratne (111) has seen HSD end Buckley Ridges’s season. Coming in on day one at 3/48, Weeraratne flayed the Bucks’ bowlers all over the tiny ground, belting four sixes en route to his first ton of the season. He was well supported by Michael Davies (45) who has had an ultra-consistent season. In the absence of Bucks’ all-rounder Luke Fletcher, who returned to the UK to begin his professional season, Susantha Pradeep (5/70) stood up in a brilliant spell. And on day two, Davies (4/50), Weeraratne (2/20) and Lee Brown (3/51) choked the life out of the contest, as the Cobras rattled through them with ease, bowling the home-side out for 165. The Cobras now face-off with Hallam-Kalora Park next week for a chance to play a grand final against Mordialloc. TURF 2

Narre South now surely has to change their name to the Narrewobbles after somehow losing to Southern Pirates at Strathaird Reserve. The dominant team all season, highlighted by their 17-point difference from second spot, were in a position of power late on day two, before choking and losing one of the unlosable games. Bowling the Pirates out for 245 on day one, off the back of skipper Scott Phillips (4/60) and Ali Mortaza (5/81), the South were cruising at 3/203 with Phillips (76) and Kirk Dickson (44) batting with absolute ease. But only an hour later, their season came to an end, losing 7/29, as Matthew Perry (6/35) went berserk. Beaconsfield has also lost their game to a pretty powerful St Mary’s side, with the Saints chasing down the Tigers’ 236 only five wickets down. Star all-rounder Robert Peat (66) was in vintage touch on day two, while for the Tigers, skipper Dylan Freitag (52 and 2/38) was their best perfomer. St Mary’s will now meet Southern Pirates in the grand final next week, with the winner coming into Turf 1 next season.

Parkers sent packing HAMPTON PARK BOWLS The bowling season is over for Hampton Park’s Saturday Division 4 and Division 6 pennant players after two losses in their sectional semi-finals on Saturday. Both teams finished fourth on their ladders and had to play the top teams in their section, unfortunately away from Pound Road. Division 4 travelled back to Keysborough for a chance to play in the Section Final, but finished with a similar result as last week. Val Moore, Jen Sherry, Denise Eastick and Geoff Ampt again faltered late in a close game to go down 1724, while Trevor Harbright, Janice Collins, Mark Paton and Ken Cobden made a comeback, but went down 11-19. Marion Battaglia, Helen Lambert, Sean McDonald and Heather Naismith also made a comeback, but fell short 19-27 and Vince Kovacic, Aaron Ottaway, Rob Woff and Ron Beverley had a bad day (7-25) Keysborough (2) 95 d Hampton Park (2) 54 Division 6 had the tougher task at Ferntree Gully and although they went down by 11 shots, it is a sterling effort on their super slick carpet. Dislodged after great year of bowls CRANBOURNE BOWLS Down 17 shots at the half way break, it was the worst start possible for the ladies team and it was always going to be hard to win from here, but Cranbourne did fight back. Skip Freda Farrall and her lead Maree Taylor played an outstanding game and on their rink they won by 14 shots, but in the end this was not enough to cover the other two rinks losing overall by 10 shots with the final score of 58 to Cranbourne and 68 to Waverley Golf. Disappointing yet again after losing another grand-final but they will be up for the fight again to try and do one better next year. Ladies director and player, Kath Dudink was proud of the Cranbourne ladies div 1 pennant team during the year despite the disappointing loss in the grand-final. With the end of the season and pennant for another year, the club now looks forward to next year with great excitement and anticipation. Title hinges on three men By David Nagel The unwavering, unshakable belief of three men will be put to the ultimate test when Kooweerup and Pakenham lock horns in this weekend’s WGCA Premier Division grand final at Denham’s Road. The commitment and dedication of Kooweerup captain-coach Mark Cooper collides head first with Pakenham’s resolute skipper Dom Paynter, and its unyielding coach Rob Elston, in a battle of the three best leaders in the game. The Demons and Lions are dripping with talent all the way down their lists, there’s no doubt about that, but these three men encapsulate the saying “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Cooper stood out like a beacon against his former club Cardinia (152) last week scoring a magnificent 141 not out to lead his Demons (6/249cc) to an emphatic advance to the grand final. And it was the brilliant 117-run partnership of Paynter (87) and Elston (45) that steered the Lions (9/202) out of the mire at 5/58, eventually winning a thriller against Tooradin (199). So what makes these blokes so special? It’s no coincidence that when all three combined for this year’s Country Week campaign, the WGCA Warriors came out on top, winning division three. Cooper the ultimate preparer, skipping rope in the carpark prior to games, Paynter and Elston the best onfield organisers in the business. Cooper leads all-comers this season, scoring a mammoth 792 runs at the imperious average of 79.2. Paynter (426 at 38.7) and Elston (351 at 39) combined can’t match that tally, but it’s when they do their busi-

ness that counts. Quite simply, the Lions wouldn’t be in this position of going for backto-back titles if it wasn’t for Elston. Chasing 217 in last year’s grand final against the Demons, the Lions were 6/125 when he walked -or limped- to the crease. Under the ultimate pressure he shared a small partnership with Sean Gramc before crowning the Lions as West Gippsland champions with an unbeaten 72-run stand with Ben Shipperd. He just would not be beaten.

And that’s the tantalising factor that makes this grand final so appealing. The Demons, they have weatherbeaten heroes who have been through the wringer a million times, but still maintain their gloss. Loyal stalwarts like Matt Davey, Chris O’Hara, and the Bright-brothers -Chris, John, Matt and Paul- have seen it all before winning multiple premierships at the club. Cooper, as you would expect, is fully respectful of this weekend’s opponent.

“History says these two clubs are really good rivals, and they’ve matched up well over a lot of years,” he said. “We respect them hugely, and they’re the reigning premiers for a reason. Both on and off their field, they’re a very strong club and they’re led really well as a unit by Dom (Paynter), Rob (Elston), and (club president) Phil Anning. “They’ve also got a lot of local boys in their side, and so do we.” Paynter said this could be his side’s

Needing a win to stay in the race for a grand final appearance, the Demons looked nervous early, with the Crows able to utilise the slippery and humid conditions to take a 13-point lead into the first-break. But through some inspiration by skipper Daisy Pearce (20 disposals, 1 goal), the Dees sprang to life, dominating the next two-quarters. As Pearce lifted, so did her teammates around her, with Karen Paxman, Sarah Lampard and co starting to get some outside footy, with the Crows unable to keep up when the Dees got the ball on their terms. But with minutes to play, the Dees looked home, but last-gasp goals to Kellie Gibson and Sarah Perkins scared the life out of the demon camp, before the visitors were able to ice the clock, and more importantly keep their season alive. Demons coach Mick Stinear was full of praise for his side’s composure under pressure, and praised his skipper for lifting when it mattered. “The girls were composed, and had a thirst for hard-work - the girls did a great job at the end with repeat stoppages and were able to kill the clock,” he explained. “There was youth and experience in our defence and they were excellent - they played with a lot of heart. “Our leaders had a good honest discussion this week and spoke about how to change things, nothing drastic but just little things like focus and application.

Subaru is a driver’s treat By Alistair Kennedy We seem to spend much of our road testing time behind the wheels of SUVs nowadays. As much as we appreciate the functionality and convenience of these vehicles they do fall down in one respect … they’re not a lot of fun to drive. So we’ve given ourselves a treat with this week’s road test, the Subaru BRZ, a delightful little 2.0-litre twodoor coupe with six-speed manual transmission. Subaru BRZ has been on sale in Australia since 2012 although it didn’t hit the dealers’ showroom floors until 2014 with supply restrictions seeing them sold exclusively over the internet in that interim period. The BRZ is built as a joint venture with Toyota, Subaru’s part-owner, and it competes directly against its nearidentical twin, the Toyota 86. The division of labour between the two companies makes sense with Toyota looking after the product planning and styling while Subaru is in charge of its engineering development and manufacture, the latter at Subaru’s Ota plant in Japan. The latest BRZ was released in late 2016 with some minor design tweaks, extra engine outputs and revised suspension tuning. New exterior features include LED headlights and taillights, new

10-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a wider and lower bumper design. Inside there’s optional red stitching and BRZ embossing on the front seats, enhanced instrument gauges and a new steering wheel. Topping of the package are price reductions with the manual BRZ now selling for $32,990 and the automatic for $34,990, down by $1230 and $1735 respectively on the preceding model. The 2012 model sold for $37,150 (manual) and $39,730 (automatic). The BRZ certainly looks the part with its wide and low stance, short overhangs and flared wheel arches. The front features a large, hexagonal grille with sweeping headlights and the rear is tall and square with an additional brake light positioned between twin large tail pipes. The cabin features a roofline in keeping with the car’s low profile and although it’s necessary to hunker down into the driver’s seat once settled in the seat is firm but comfortable and there’s plenty of leg and headroom. Although technically a four-seater, the two rear seats are only there for emergency use and not for long-distance trips. At 218 litres the boot is relatively small although the rear seatbacks do fold flat for extra storage space. Surprisingly for a car where space is at a premium, BRZ comes with a

Subaru BRZ is a real head-turner. full-size spare wheel. Power for the BRZ comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged horizontally-opposed petrol engine that generates 152 kW of power at 7000 rpm and 212 Nm of torque at 6400 revs (147 kW and 205 Nm with the auto). The engine also sounds great with the characteristic throaty sound of the Subaru ‘boxer’ engine. With our fun focus we made sure that our test car had the six-speed manual, a superbly notchy short-throw unit that’s both fast and smooth and just asks to be used frequently. Both the manual and the six-speed automatic transmissions were specifi-

cally developed for the BRZ. The automatic gets paddle gear shifts. BRZ breaks new ground for Subaru in Australia in having rear-wheel drive. All other models sold here have allwheel drive (AWD). The little Subie coupe gets a fivestar ANCAP safety rating courtesy of seven airbags; stability and traction control; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; Isofix child seat anchor points; LCD daytime running lights; front and rear fog lights; hill start assist; and reversing camera. Also new for the MY17 BRZ is a

Vehicle Dynamic Control ‘Track’ for extra performance. Information display is through a 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen. Bluetooth pairing is fast and logical and the USB and auxiliary sockets are in the front of the central console. The audio system has six speakers but having to compete against the combination of the engine burble and road noise means the sound quality isn’t great. As expected in a car of this type, the ride is firm with plenty of feel for the road yet comfortable enough for an extended trip. Steering is precise and direct with excellent feedback to the driver. Ride comfort is up with the best in this class. There’s no loss of driver confidence in the use of two-wheel rather than four-wheel drive, with the BRZ suspension producing plenty of grip and stability. Driving height is lower than we would prefer but that’s a minor compromise for all the handling benefits. It’s always offered excellent value never more so than now with a price cut and added equipment bringing the starting price down to $32,990 prior to on-road costs.
