Can Casey’s existing suburbs cope with another two suburbs to share its congested roads, trains and buses? The State Government recently announced fast-tracking of two suburbs for more than 35,000 people in Casey’s south-east. The new Casey suburbs - branded McPherson and Minta Farm - would help boost construction jobs and make housing more affordable, Treasurer Tim Pallas said. Casey council’s response was that the State Government should first “catch up - then keep

up” with the $4.5 billion transport infrastructure gap for existing suburbs. On the council wish-list is $1.2 billion for clogged arterial roads, up to $3 billion for a railway extension to Clyde and $50 million for bus service upgrades. Councillor Wayne Smith said that established suburbs like Doveton and Hampton Park are crying out for “renewal”. He said the backlog of infrastructure needs including inadequate sports facilities, road upgrades and bus links was “overwhelming”. “It’s embarrassing going to some sports facilities here in comparison to those in the new sub-

Alleged cool con artist A man has been accused of conning thousands of dollars from customers buying air-conditioners and commercial fridges in Cranbourne, Hampton Park and Dandenong. Neil Turner, 66, of Dandenong, faced charges of dishonestly receiving more than $14,000 from various customers in 2014-’16, according to court documents filed at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. He was also charged with stealing a $4000 Hiace van in Dandenong, stealing a $1000 commercial dishwasher in Blackburn and assault with a metal bar in Cranbourne. Among the allegations was deceptively taking

$4500 from a Dandenong customer after offering to build, draw up plans and quote for a steam room on a rural property in 2015. He also allegedly deceptively received $2500 from another customer after advertising a reconditioned cool room on the Gumtree trading website in 2014. Turner also allegedly took $2240 for purporting to sell two display fridges in Frankston in 2014, and a $2700 deposit for a commercial freezer, three open display cases and a produce fridge in Patterson Lakes in 2015. He also deceptively received a $1600 deposit for two compressors in Dandenong in 2016, $700 for a re-conditioned commercial refrigerator in Dandenong in 2015 and $600 deposit for selling

and installing an air- conditioner in Cranbourne. Turner also faced three charges of producing false documents to would-be customers in 2016. The case had been adjourned several times since September, without even going through the first stage of a summary case conference, the court was told on 27 February. The latest adjournment was sought by Turner due to his wife’s cancer treatments, the court was told. Magistrate Barry Schultz told Turner, who was representing himself, that the matter had to be “progressed in some way”. Turner was bailed for a mention hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 6 April.

Top guns flying high with their feet on the ground By Cam Lucadou-Wells Some of Nossal High School’s ‘top guns’ lived the dream as they took the controls of an F/A-18F Super Hornet simulator on 24 February. The students, under the guidance of visiting members of the Royal Australian Air Force, took turns in the replica strike-fighter cockpit and as support crew on a simulated flight mission. Year 11 student Jordan said he’d forever remember his time in the 11-metre, 2500-kilogram simulator. He said there was a unanimous thumbs-up from students who had successfully applied for an experience which included dressing up in RAAF flight suits and life-support equipment. The students also experienced an F-35’s barrel rolls and other extreme manoeuvres through virtual-reality headsets. They also cleared take-offs and landings - with several near-misses - in a simulated joint-battlefield airspace control room. “I would like to greatly thank the (RAAF) members for their willingness to inform us of the realities of their jobs,” Jordan said. Assistant principal Keith Butler said the event went “gang-busters” even though the dedicated students didn’t usually like to miss class. “They were queuing up to have a go in the end.” RAAF’s team leader Ellie Gray said the simulator gave students an experience close to the real thing. “It really is good fun and you get a good feel of what it is like to fly the plane.” The simulator experience has toured several Victorian schools, and will land at Avalon International Air Show this month.

Mum left out on a limb A Hallam woman has reasons to be thankful after fire tucks arrived on Coral Drive in Hallam to retrieve her from a tree. The woman climbed the tree to fetch a drone for her sons and became stuck in the tree’s branches. Her sons called emergency services to help her shortly before 3pm on Tuesday 28 February. A truck from Dandenong, a truck from Hallam and a truck from Hampton Park were dispatched to help the women out of the tree. It took CFA crews about 15 minutes to get the woman down from the tree who, after an assessment by Ambulance Victoria, was found to have no injuries.

Man punched, phone stolen Thieves punched a Noble Park man and stole his mobile phone just metres away from his home. Police said the 30-year-old was talking on his phone as he walked along Buckley Street about 10.30pm on Tuesday 21 February. Two men, one African and one Caucasian in appearance, walked towards him from the railway station. They struck the victim to the back of the head and he fell to the ground. The attackers punched him two or three more times while he was on the ground, picked up his phone and walked away towards the train station. The victim suffered minor injuries. Seized car torched by vandals A vehicle seized by police was torched in a Dandenong South storage yard. Police said the vandals entered the Kirkham Road site about 4.30am on Tuesday 21 February. They forced open the back door to the main storage shed and targeted a silver Jeep. Police had brought the vehicle into the tow yard earlier that night. Spread the growth: Libs By Victoria Stone-Meadows Plans to direct Victoria’s growing population out of Melbourne suburbs and into regional centres have been examined at a forum in Cranbourne. The Opposition’s Victorian Coalition Population Taskforce is aiming to reduce pressure on expanding suburbs. It hosted a forum at Cranbourne’s Balla Balla Community Centre on Friday 24 February to discuss the challenges faced by residents of the booming south-east suburbs. The forum was chaired by MP Tim Smith, who also chairs the taskforce, and was attended by coalition MPs Gordon Rich-Phillips and Inga Peulich as well as City of Casey mayor Sam Aziz. “The overwhelming comments from the Cranbourne forum were around how long it takes to commute to Melbourne and the capacity constraints on rail services,” Mr Smith said. “The key driver of those concerns is population growth and the State Government not matching infrastructure. “Our plan is for the whole of Victoria to reap the rewards of a growing population.” The taskforce was officially launched by Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy on 15 November 2016. It will also investigate issues surrounding jobs, housing, services, and transport infrastructure systems in a bid to manage the growing population of the state.

Cr Aziz said the forum was a positive step in informing future policy. “It was a great step forward in framing policy for managing the population growth in the south-east,” he said. “I gave them some inserting points such as how critical it is for road and transport infrastructure to support the massive population. “I urged the MPs present to put pressure on the State Government to move on the $500 million offer from the Federal Government for the road network.” Cr Aziz also spoke about the need for a tailored approach to rate capping that takes into account the needs of councils operating in growth areas. “The consensus was that a populist and generalist rate capping across all councils does not work,” he said. “It might work for a council like Stonnington but for a council like Casey which is required to deliver $50 or $60 million of infrastructure every year it doesn’t work.” Chairman of the taskforce and MP for Kew Tim Smith said the real experiences shared by communities in places such as Casey will have a direct impact on Coalition policy. “We have a policy process and direction to try to take the pressure off Melbourne and grow regional Victoria,” he said. “Melbourne is bursting at the seams with 77

Picture: CONTRIBUTED. per cent of the Victoria’s population, which is growing by 100,000 a year, in Melbourne and it is totally unsustainable.” Mr Smith said the forum showed that the current State Government is not keeping up with the infrastructure needs of the growing region. The Taskforce will hold more community meeting and forums in Shepparton, Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo, the Latrobe Valley, Wodonga and Mildura before delivering a final report to Mr Guy late in the year.

Former Berwick mayor digs in on quarry to park push By Cam Lucadou-Wells City of Berwick former mayor Syd Pargeter describes it as possibly his last campaign for the public good. The 88-year-old has been hitting the phones on a daily basis to restore a disused Harkaway quarry to a spectacular park. The basalt quarry, owned and run by Hanson Quarries, has ceased operation for several years. Despite being fenced off, the quarry - which has become a lake surrounded by stark mining excavations - had become a “magnet” for dumping cars and rubbish and “lawlessness”, Mr Pargeter said. He also worries for the safety of young people ‘bombing’ from cliffs into the lake despite submerged cars and sheet metal lurking in the waters. Mr Pargeter said the ‘Harkaway Water Park’ could include an equestrian trail linking Noack and King roads, a landscaped artesian lake for deep divers and a last-resort fire refuge. The park - which Mr Pargeter hopes will comprise up to 10 per cent of the massive site - ought not to cause great expense to ratepayers, he argues. The land would be donated to Casey Council as public open space as part of any future development, he said. Hanson was also legally obliged to rehabilitate the land at its expense prior to hand-over. “It has to be given to the people,” Mr Pargeter says. “It doesn’t have to be bought.” The outcome ought to rival another majestically transformed former quarry, Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick, he said. “Harkaway has got the wrong end of things for a while. We pay big rates and get nothing for it.”

It would provide an increasingly rare off-road horse-riding track, shared by mountain-bikers and walkers. “The equestrian community’s access to riding areas is diminishing. “As everything develops around us, we have to retain these areas.” Rosalie Counsell, a member of Green Wedges Coalition and Save the Casey Foothills Association, also supported the idea. Councillor Rosalie Crestani said the vision

had great merit, subject to negotiations between Casey Council and Hanson about the site’s handover. “I’d love to see that site used for a community area and to apply a treatment like Wilson Botanic Park.” Cr Crestani said the prospect of a recycling facility on the site was “not on the table”. According to a Casey Council landscape assessment of the Casey foothills area in 2014, the quarry had low landscape value compared to Lysterfield Lake due to its manmade “desolation”. However, there was potential for its “rugged” topography to be a “potentially valued area”.

In Brief Funding for islands of hope Young Pacific Islanders in Casey and Dandenong will receive a leg up through a new pilot program. Announcing State Government funding of $600,000 for the Young Pasifika Program, Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott said it was unfortunate that youths in certain communities were at greater risk of dropping out of school or work, engaging in risky behaviour and suffering racism and discrimination. “That’s why it’s so important for us to offer targeted support to ensure every Victorian - regardless of where they come from - gets a fair go,” he said. Experienced youth outreach workers will work directly with the youths and re-connect them to school, jobs and training. The workers will help to engage young people through existing community networks and relationships such as sport, churches and local government programs. Youth Affairs Minister Jenny Mikakos said the program would improve the social, community and economic opportunities for young Pacific Islanders. The program will initially be delivered in Casey and Wyndham, then extended into Dandenong and Brimbank. The program will also fund a project co-ordinator to work closely with local organisations and networks to help improve links between support services and deliver a co-ordinated response.

Ross River Virus hits Residents of Casey are being warned to take extra care to protect themselves from mosquito bites after the blood-borne illness Ross River Virus was detected in the area. Six residents in Casey and Frankston have been diagnosed with the illness which is carried and transferred by mosquitoes. Symptoms for Ross River Virus include fever, headache, aching muscles and/or joints, and fatigue. The illness can be diagnosed by a doctor by the symptoms, while a blood test is recommended to confirm if the illness has been contracted. While there is no cure for Ross River Virus, the arthritis-like symptoms of the illness will dissipate on their own and pain management is used to treat symptoms while patients recover. Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, Professor Charles Guest said the recent weather conditions have caused the virus to pop up where it isn’t usually detected. Practical measures advised by health professionals to reduce the risk of contracting the virus include: · Ensure that insect screens fitted to doors and windows on houses are in good condition; · Wearing long, light coloured loose-fitting clothing and use a suitable insect repellent containing picaridin or DEET; and · Getting rid of stagnant water around the home or campsites as it is used as mosquito breeding grounds. Onset of symptoms may become apparent two to 14 days after a mosquito bite and people experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention from their GP or their local hospital.

Valentine’s ‘gift’ breach By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has breached a days-old community corrections order by placing a gift of “memories” on his expartner’s Dandenong doorstep on Valentine’s Day, a court has heard. The man had been placed on the court-imposed order on 11 February, and was banned under an intervention order from approaching his ex-partner’s home, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. He had been placed on the orders after being found guilty of threatening to kill, unlawful assault and two breaches of an intervention order. Endeavour Hills police investigated the complaint that on Valentine’s Day the man texted and voice-mailed his ex-partner several times; he was

permitted to make text or email messages for making child-sharing arrangements but not voice-mail or phone calls. He told the complainant he was distressed that he’d been unable to see his children in recent days and about having a criminal record for “wanting to kill someone”. In a voicemail that afternoon, he told the victim that he’d left $1000 under her doormat. The victim discovered the present was not $1000 but a box filled with “memories” shared by the family. Police told the court on 27 February that the incident had caused the complainant fear and concern for the man’s mental state. Defence lawyer Michael Kuzilny said the man had become emotional on Valentine’s Day because

he wanted to “get my family back together”. A Forensicare representative told the court that the man needed to see a psychiatrist as soon as possible and resume medication. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the man, with a history of bipolar disorder, had become overwhelmed by his marriage breakdown and work stresses. Mr Vandersteen varied the treatment-based community corrections order, adding judicial monitoring and supervision and dropping the community work requirement - in lieu of spending 13 days in remand custody. The intervention order was also altered, barring the man from making child-custody arrangements by email or text message.

College graduation is a community confidence boost By Cam Lucadou-Wells It was a proud moment for some of Doveton College’s latest group of adult graduates. Many of the 30 English as an Additional Language graduates were joined on-stage by their beaming children - many of whom are students at the college - for the certificate presentation on 28 February. Marie Holmes, the college’s community education, employment and training co-ordinator, said the event encapsulated the holistic, whole-offamily embrace of Doveton College. “It’s just about these women learning English and participating more in everyday life, but the kids see their mums graduate and think ‘I can do this’. “There’s an impact on the whole family and the community.” The grown-up learners from the five-day-aweek on-campus course build confidence and kick on in life. For example, they no longer require interpreters at parent-teacher interviews, and many kick on to further studies such as early childhood training. The course is run by the college in partnership

Forum tips to target crime Two guest speakers will share crime and safety advice at the next Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch public forum. New Greater Dandenong Inspector Mark Langhorn and Greater Dandenong Council’s senior community development co-ordinator Sharon Sykes will present information and answer questions. The forum will take place from 7.30pm to 9pm on Wednesday 15 March. Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch president Dawn Vernon said there’d be an afternoon session held prior to each forum this year, subject to strong attendance. She said the 3pm event followed demand from those who were unable to attend the evening sessions. Angela Long couldn’t hold back tears for the late Albert Blashki at the Monday 27 February Greater Dandenong Council meeting. The councillor said Mr Blashki, who died on 19 February and was a Greater Dandenong Living Treasure, drove the bridesmaids’ car at her wedding to husband Barry. “He was a mentor to me and always encouraged me,” she said. Cr Long went to school with Mr Blashki’s chil-

dren and Barry knew the Blashkis through the Masonic Lodge. “Barry’s dad introduced him to the car clubs and helped him restore the hot mobile that was used in our wedding,” she said. A former Apex service club member is tired of the name being attached to criminal activity. Trail bike riders across Casey and Greater Dandenong are being asked to contribute to a plan for a safer network of bike trails in Neerim East State Forest. One quarter of all motorcycle deaths and serious injuries occur off-road in the Gippsland region, prompting the State Government to take action to improve rider safety. VicRoads and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) have received $109,000 from the State Government to investigate options to design the safer track network. A former Narre Warren South P-12 student has overcome great odds to record a stunning 99.65 ATAR score. Yasir Sultani, who has just enrolled in an Engineering-Commerce double-degree at Monash University, is an Afghan-born Hazara refugee who has had an interrupted education due to growing up in life-threatening circumstances. Yasir said he always considered himself a good student, completing Year 10 as he and his family took refuge in Pakistan. But the situation became too unsafe for him and others of the persecuted Hazara people to go to school, he said. In the meantime he played badminton and practised drawing - the latter was a way to “forget about all the horrible things happening around me”. “Here in Australia, reading books replaced drawing as an escape from reality,” he said. “Any money I got I would spend it on a book.” Yasir said he arrived in Australia with “all the hope in the world” but the reality was harder than expected. First was the gnawing worry for loved ones left behind as a “slew of horrible news” poured in from Pakistan and Afghanistan. He studied mainly at recess and lunchtime because his living arrangements weren’t suitable for study. And there were also tight financial constraints. “I tried for jobs but got rejected too many times. As a result, I had to ask the school for (financial help).” Thankfully, Narre Warren South P-12 pitched in to help Yasir with uniforms and books. This support as well as help from the Centre for Multicultural Youth encouraged Yasir to put in a huge effort towards the end of Year 12, he said. He had hoped for a 95 ATAR score to get a scholarship but thought he had underachieved in his exams. “On seeing the result I was shocked. I thought I was still dreaming and that the alarm is gonna go off soon.

They are particularly concerned about preserving the wetlands in the Keysborough-Mordialloc area, and lucrative agricultural land in Western Port. But they say some of Keysborough’s “wedge” can be developed for housing. The report, South East Nonurban Study, commissioned by the cities of Greater Dandenong, Casey, Kingston and Frankston and the Department of Infrastructure, calls for a universal strategic plan for the entire 45,000 hectare green wedge, a non-urban zone

dubbed “the lungs of Melbourne”. It calls for strict policies about what development should be allowed and for a permanent “edge to the wedge” to prevent developers from “nibbling away at it”. The report states there is already enough residential land in the South-Eastern growth corridor in Berwick and Cranbourne to absorb Melbourne’s growth over the next 20 years.

Former Dandenong Girls High School students will reunite in their old classrooms for what is likely to be the final time. Colleen Bailey said an event on Saturday 25 March would mark the school’s 60th anniversary. The school had gone through a series of names, she said, including Dandenong Girls Secondary School, Dandenong Girls High School, Dandenong North High School, Cleeland High School and Cleeland Secondary College. “Now it’s part of Dandenong High School’s Ann Street campus,” she said. “We held a reunion in 2014 and it was sup-

posed to be the last reunion as the school is being demolished. “The hall and gym have been removed but classrooms are still standing, so we took advantage of that and asked if we could hold the anniversary reunion at the school.” Ms Bailey said that more than 800 people attended the last reunion and organisers were hoping to repeat the achievement. “People are coming from interstate and are madly booking flights and accommodation,” she said. “We all have good memories from the school years and the committee is made up from students ranging from the 1960s to 1980s, and we

Firstly I would like to thank councillor Sean O’Reilly for bringing up the topic of extra toilet facilities on Springvale Road as I have approached him several times regarding the issue and I also note the suggestion was greeted with laughs. Well, I am glad someone finds it funny but it won’t be when you are in dire circumstances someday as anyone can be! I am also interested if the laughs were by our councillors as I would like to know who they are so we know not to vote for them in the next elections. As far as the cost of approximately $10,000 for it and losing several parking spaces, I thought it was said the revenue from the parking meters is to better Springvale and what better way to improve the city other than offering hygienic services for the public. We feel a good spot would be where the hospital was and now has the decorative balls, they don’t take much room and you wouldn’t lose your parking. I have witnessed adults putting children on the gutter to do their job or against a tree as there is nowhere for them to go. This is the Third World answer, do we want that? We now have the Arches on the other end of town, what function do they serve other than to look at and collect dust and they costed a far sight more than $10,000. Toilets are a necessity for health and cleanliness. As far as charging for them, that is ridiculous. As I pointed out to Cr O’Reilly previously, Clarinda Shopping Centre has two, Clayton Shopping has at least four, Rosebank Avenue shopping strip has one and these are all free. Safeway in Springvale used to have toilets for the public to use and closed them due to vandalism, St. Joseph’s Church has but they are only open when the office is open, for the same reason, and it is not up to the businesses to open their facilities to the public for free and then have to foot the bill for expenses. This is a council responsibility. How about putting our tax dollars to good use and improve Springvale where it is really needed - what better way to beautify our streets. We have brought this matter up so many times with different councillors and to the paper but apparently no one thinks it is important. Ma fry magic at Doveton Seafoods By Casey Neill Chef Larry Ma has stepped out of the Grand Hyatt kitchen and into Doveton Seafoods. “I’ve been in the kitchen for 15 years,” he said. “I started from a small kitchen and then I moved my way up. “I was in the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne for four years. “After that I decided to go for my own shop. “I wanted to have more freedom.” Partner Larissa Zhao had bought her first fish and chip shop six years earlier, in Kilsyth. Larry followed her into the field. “This is our fifth shop,” he said. “We used to have fish and chips in Chadstone, Kilsyth and Hawthorn. “We just took over this shop about July last year. “This shop has been here for so many years. We didn’t realise how long. “We asked a lot of locals.” Most said its first year was 1967. “We decided to celebrate the shop,” he said. A 50th anniversary sign hangs on the cash register, and customers who spend over $50 will score a free drink. Larry said burgers and souvlakis were among the shop’s specialties. “We learnt it from one of the previous landlords,” he said. “He’s Greek and he has 40 years of experience as well. “The hamburger and souvlaki are from the Greek man’s recipe - I call it the grandfather’s recipe. “While keeping it authentic, we try to adjust it to suit the modern trend as well. “There are so many new, modern fish and chip shops nowadays. “We try to accommodate the younger people

Larry said: “A lot of shops try to charge as much as they can because they expect the people to be able to afford it. “In this area there’s a lot more competition. “We try our best to not put the prices up too much, but not sacrifice the quality as well.” He is bringing his hotel experience into the shop. “We always addressed the guests by name in the hotel,” he said. “If you go to a normal takeaway shop, they always address you by the numbers. “They put the order on the counter.

“There is no connection there. “Whenever we see the customers, we always greet them with a smile and we always call them by name whenever we can. “It makes the whole experience better for them.” Happy customers have flooded their Facebook page with positive feedback. Some have travelled from their most recent shop, in Chadstone, to stick with them. Larry and Larissa have already updated the shop’s menu board and seating, and will turn to the window art, counter and floor next. Larry said one customer aged in her forties pointed out a crack in the tiles that she’d caused with a golf ball during her childhood. Menu-wise, he hopes to add salads in response to customer requests and is looking into gyros.

Kokoda challenge for a cause By Victoria Stone-Meadows A 63 year-old man from Narre Warren will be taking on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea later this year in a bid to raise money for a sick young woman. Ray Spinks has been on a health kick for about 12 months and he has a set a goal to improve himself while helping 19-year-old Jade Kollmorgen pay for her cystic fibrosis treatments. “It all started when I wanted to do something for myself,” Mr Spinks said. “I have lost 21kg in the last 12 months and my fitness has never been like this before.” Mr Spinks’ personal trainer suggested he set himself some goals for his fitness and that was when his personal mission changed into a quest to help Ms Kollmorgen. Mr Spinks met Jade through his wife Kathryn who works with Ms Kollmorgen’s mother Rachel. “I was sitting at home having a conversation with my wife about walking the Kokoda Track and I said I would like to do it for a charity,” Mr Spinks said. “We thought about it for a bit, looked at each other and we both said ‘let’s do it for Jade’.” Since then, Mr Spinks has been training every day to the lead up to him leaving for Papua New Guinea on 20 April to take on the mammoth 90km walk. Ms Kollmorgen has been dealing with the effects of cystic fibrosis her entire life and said it changes the way she is able to live and function. “Over the last year I have been in hospital more and more,” she said. “Last year was worst; I was in hospital eight or nine times for two weeks at a time.” “I even went overseas for my gap year and was in hospital for the start and end of the trip; it has become harder to deal with over the past year.” On top of the hours of breathing exercises she has to do every day, Ms Kollmorgen takes about 40 different tablets during the day to keep her symptoms under control. Mr Spinks is raising money for Ms Kollmorgen through a GoFundMe account where all the money generated will go directly to the Kollmor-

Support for car industry ahead of Toyota closure By Casey Neill Assistance for auto industry suppliers in Greater Dandenong is revving up ahead of Toyota’s October closure. South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden said positive measures were being implemented from the South East Local Auto Transition Taskforce. “The meetings are happening and those ideas are being integrated,” he said. “It’s a difficult situation to manage when you think you may have several thousand people all out of a job at the same time. “Emphasis needs to shift from preparing for unemployment to getting the employers and the potential employees in front of each other. “The big thing that we need to use is the councils because they have access to the manufacturers in terms of their databases.” Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said the council had introduced a new two-year program to identify at-risk businesses. “The council plans to engage with between 10 to 15 companies who may be adversely impacted by changes to the automotive sector,” he said. “We will look at everything from strategic planning, cultural change and financial analysis and will work with these companies on a one-onone basis, as well as in a group environment.

“The key focus will be to implement important and necessary change to enable businesses to remain competitive and sustainable.” Cr Memeti said the region had the highest concentration of automotive supply chain companies in the state. “We will continue to work with automotive supply chain workers, businesses and communities to ensure they have access to support and assistance during this time of uncertainty,” he said. “We will also continue to advocate for additional funding support from all tiers of government.” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams - also the South East Local Auto Transition Taskforce chairwoman - said the State Government had established a dedicated automotive-focused skills and job centre in the heart of Dandenong to provide workers with access to training and job support services. On 8 February she announced TI Automotive Australia in Dandenong South and GTS Industries in Doveton were among 23 automotive supply chain companies to receive funding under the Automotive Supply Chain Transition Program (ASCTP). TI Automotive Australia will use the funding to develop a business transition plan, using financial and strategic data to support discussions around growth and transition. The plan will define the businesses current

state and identify issues and challenges impacting strategic direction. GTS Industries will use its funding to undertake actions outlined in its business transition plan, specifically detailed market survey work and interviews with selected major builders. The latest round of ASCTP funding, announced on 8 February, built on $618,000 already provided to 29 Victorian automotive supply chain companies. The program was established to help businesses identify future opportunities in new markets. Eligible supply chain companies can receive up to $71,000 to engage industry specialists and help develop a plan for transition. Funding is also available for business capability development including assistance with management skills, sales and marketing, financial management, new product development, business development and marketing. It’s part of the $46.5 million Automotive Transition Plan. “We know that many parts of the state have been hit hard by the closure of car manufacturing plants, and it’s great to see supply chains taking advantage of new business opportunities,” Ms Williams said. Chemicals are what’s cooking in the latest sticky mix By Casey Neill Need a glue or coating? Check the giant cake mixer at Fortis Adhesives and Coatings. The Dandenong South company mixes and cooks chemicals to change their structure. A four-metre high mixer is among the tools of the trade, managing director Phillip Arena explained. “It is a way of just cooking,” he said. “I love chemicals. “You can just manipulate them. “It’s about bending molecules.” Fortis makes more than 120 products, from industrial adhesives and industrial coatings to protective coatings for floors and metals, and curing compounds for concrete. “We do marine coating,” Mr Arena said. A large boat sits in the factory ready to coat, test, strip and coat again. It’s helped Fortis to develop four products in recent years - only one for nautical use. Fortis is also an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) which means it makes products that carry another company’s label, and Bunnings is among its clients. Mr Arena has a PhD in organic chemistry and industry experience and training. “I’ve been in the industry for over 20 years,” he said. “Eight years ago decided to do more work in Australia. “The only way to truly do that was to set up my own business. “No one was manufacturing these products in Australia. “They went for large volume, large-use products. “I decided to specialise in niche requirements - the large companies don’t want to look at those niche requirements, it’s too small a volume.” He set up in Seaford and operated for about six months before moving to Dandenong South. “We’ve moved twice,” he said. “Then we’ve purchased this premise to scale up.” Fortis moved in on 1 December and aimed to be 90 per cent set up by the end of March. On 6 December it received a Greater Dandenong Business Grant at Dandenong Civic Centre alongside four other businesses. The grant included up to $8000 plus business mentoring and marketing valued at about $2000. “We wanted new-style technology for our

Fortis employs six people and uses some parttime and casual workers.

Mr Arena said the business was growing. “We do a lot of research and development (RND),” he said. “We also have an innovation grant with Monash University. “A couple of guys work here and at Monash. “We develop products that we bring into production and commercialise.” When a client approaches Fortis for a product, “we try to work out whether it’s something that we already have”. “We work on the chemistry and the equipment they already have and what they’re trying to produce,” he said. They link up with engineering firms that can build new machinery to handle the glues. Fortis can also help people who are looking for a local or cheaper alternative to an existing product by analysing a sample in its laboratory.

A trip to China could open new doors for businesses in Greater Dandenong. Springvale Asian Business Association (SABA) is linking up with Wenzhou Chamber of International Commerce in China and has invited Greater Dandenong Council to get involved. The council’s business group manager Paul Kearsley will accept an invitation from the chamber to visit with a SABA representative in coming weeks. SABA recently hosted a Wenzhou representative. “I was invited to attend a meeting with the representative from Wenzhou and SABA,” Mr Kearsley told the Monday 13 February council meeting. “They spoke eagerly and clearly about wanting to create an economic relationship.” He said that on his trip he would see what the city was about and look for opportunities for businesses to visit in the future. Mr Kearsley intends to lead a business delegation to Greater Dandenong’s sister city Xuzhou and nearby Nanjing in September, and hopes to add Wenzhou to the agenda. “It is vital to obtain further information and an understanding of the opportunities available in Wenzhou, so as to determine its suitability for a further visit,” a council report on the trip read. The council adopted an International Relations policy last July to help build overseas relationships around economic co-operation and expand economic opportunities for local businesses. It established a formal sister city relationship with Xuzhou in 1996 and over the past few years has developed a link with the Jiangsu Federation of Industry and Commerce in Nanjing. Open heart help for Chriselda By Casey Neill Chriselda looks like any other two-year-old as she runs through Elizabeth and Tim Jones’ home. The toddler from Timor Leste is now exactly that, thanks to the Joneses. Chriselda had a hole in her heart when she arrived at their home on Wednesday 1 February with her mum, Belina. The Jones’ late son Benjamin inspired them to open their doors to help Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) to perform surgery to repair the defect. The Joneses donated $15,000 to the project at the Rotary Club of Dandenong South East meeting on Tuesday 14 February. Benjamin was four years old when he passed away from a heart condition in 2015. “We spent a lot of time in hospital and the last four months we were given a lot of money by our family and friends and work colleagues,” Elizabeth explained. “We were trying to decide what to do with the money. “We wanted to donate it to somewhere that could benefit another little person with a heart condition.” ROMAC was the perfect fit. The Beaconsfield family wanted to be part of the process and share the knowledge they picked up during their trips to the Royal Children’s Hospital, so offered to host Belina and Chriselda. “It’s been really good and so rewarding,” Elizabeth said. “It was like we were blessing them but at the same time they were giving us a blessing back. “Obviously, the day of the surgery was very difficult for Belina and for us. “Our son’s heart condition was very complex. “The surgery that Chriselda had was something that was routinely done every day in Australia.” Surgeons operated on Chriselda on Monday 6 February. A week and a half later they gave her the OK to fly home. “Without this surgery, she would have got worse and worse over time,” Elizabeth said. “This surgery has prevented that all from hap-

The club’s Colin Byron said ROMAC provided life-saving or dignity-restoring surgery for children from developing countries. “Over 30 years we have brought around 500 children to Australia and New Zealand which is approximately 40 children a year,” he said. “This is a complete Rotary volunteer program where we raise the money for the children and have surgeons and hospital staff volunteer their time.”

Belina said a doctor discovered Chriselda’s condition during a check-up for a cold. “He heard a murmur, but he didn’t know exactly what was the problem,” she said. “He suggested us to check with a cardiologist, but we only have one in our country and he just finished his study. “I felt so sad because the doctor told me ‘your daughter has this, but it can’t be fixed in our country’.” Belina met an American doctor who recommended ROMAC, and submitted an application last July.

“That time worried me a lot,” she said. “Knowing your kid has this problem and there’s no medication... “ROMAC has given back the hope that every mother wants. “In our country, there’s a lot of children like Chriselda that need this help. “Sometimes in our country, the doctor says ‘we cannot fix this’ and some mothers accept the reality and go home and just wait and can’t do anything. “You don’t have to go back home and feel like ‘that’s it’.”

SPORT Time has arrived for Redbacks By David Nagel The opportunity to have a huge impact on the famous colours of the Hampton Park Football Club has arrived with the club desperate to sign players ahead of the 2017 South East Football Netball League season. The Redbacks have a new executive committee, they have money, and a new coaching panel ready to pass on a wealth of knowledge and experience to a hard-working list of players. They have loyal sponsors and supporters, and an atmosphere to be enhanced by past-player reunions to commemorate 20, 50 and 60-year premiership celebrations. Now - to complete the picture - they just need bums on seats in the change rooms! The Redbacks have a positive outlook for the future, with their governing body - AFL South East - set to deliver divisional football in 2018. This implementation will allow clubs like Hampton Park to find their watermark, and in allow Hampton to be competitive for the first time since its last finals appearance in 2011 and bring some much-needed vibrancy back to Robert Booth Reserve. But first, they need to get there. Make no mistake, this is a pivotal moment in the history of this great club that has built rivalries with foes like Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne and Narre Warren since the mid-1950s. Off-field the club is well managed, but winning just four of 84 games since a mass exodus of players crippled the club at the end of that 2011 season - well, it’s finally taken its toll. The club appeased its players in 2016 with a rumoured move to the divisional structure of the neighbouring Southern Football League.

Stingrays beefed up after boost from elite training By Nick Creely A revamped and rejuvenated Dandenong Stingrays group seems primed to bounce into the 2017 TAC Cup season with vigour after training the house down in their makeshift home at Frankston Park. With Shepley Oval unavailable over the summer due to Victorian Premier Cricket commitments, the Stingrays made Frankston’s former VFL ground its training base due to the VFL club being booted out of the competition for at least the next two years. And Stingrays coach Craig Black believes the use of the elite training facility is likely to see his young chargers rewarded from the experience. “We’ve had a really good pre-season to date - it’s great to have an elite facility in Frankston where we have access to weights and a full-length footy ground - we hope we can see the reward for being able to use it,” he said. On Monday 20 February, the Stingrays reduced their list from roughly 90 youngsters to 59, a tough process not lost on the coach. “We’ve played an intra-club, a game against Sandringham and we played Murray Bushrangers - we finalised our squad with cuts on Monday, which is exciting for some and disappointing for others - you never want to be the bearer of bad news but that’s how it is,” he said. position things would build from there but we probably underestimated just how hard it is to attract players when you’re not winning games of footy.” O’Brien and the club’s executive have changed their focus, looking to rebuild the club from the ground up, starting with the coaching department. New head-coach Dean Warren is perfectly suited for the task, with a level three coaching accreditation and previous success with VFL development squads. O’Brien is confident that if the players commit, Warren and his staff can have a huge impact on their individual and team development. “We just need players, guys who want to put their hearts on their sleeve and have a crack at senior football,” he said. “We’re in a unique situation to provide that opportunity. We want to build with a group, put a younger side on the park and watch that group grow towards success.” Co-president and football manager Tim Ziegler said the club was still waiting on a commitment from several of the 45 players that have hit the track in the pre-season. “There are probably 10 to 12 that we are still in negotiations with, those that have been to training and are still deciding their futures,” Ziegler said. “Obviously we’re trying to do everything we can to reassure the players. “Yes we know it will be tough, that this is the place to be going forward. The AFL South East Commission has confirmed that Hampton Park FNC will participate in the football and netball divisions of the SEFNL in season 2017. The resolution of the Commission followed a meeting of SEFNL Football and Netball Presidents with members of the AFL South East Commission on Wednesday 22 February. Co-Presidents of Hampton Park Mick O’Brien and Tim Ziegler addressed the meeting on Hampton Park’s current registration and training numbers. The meeting acknowledged the enthusiasm with which Mick and Tim were engaging with coaches and players and demonstrated a level of confidence of being able to field two teams in 2017. All clubs supported Hampton Park’s intention to compete in both the senior and reserve divisions. The club will now be keen to hear from players who wish to support the club and represent Hampton Park in season 2017. “We just need to get one, then two, three, four players, and start building a group that will fight through 2017 and then reap the benefits going forward,” said O’Brien. “We want a nucleus that might go through some tough times now but will enjoy some success down the track.” AFL South East Chairman Roger Hampson also addressed the meeting on the Commission’s approval of a review process about to commence to determine the structure of the competition in 2018. It is expected that a divisional structure - promotion and relegation - will be implemented into the region in 2018. Clubs will receive the terms of reference for the review shortly, which is planned to be complete by July.

Finals have a fresh new look as favourites tumble By Russell Bennett DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW ROUND 11 (ONE DAY) THREE of last season’s top four sides have officially been bundled out of the DDCA Turf 1 finals race in an astonishing close to the 2016/17 homeand-away season. Powerhouse clubs Springvale South, Cranbourne, and Berwick have all found themselves on the outside looking in after Round 11 action on Saturday. Cranbourne, in particular, has some genuine soul searching to do and some home truths to realise - closing out its season with no points from its final three rounds and just one victory since Round 5. The 2015/16 premier could only muster 160 from its 40 overs after being sent in by Mordialloc at Casey Fields. Eagles openers Lucas Ligt (0) and Brandon Tyzzer (9) both fell cheaply to Mordialloc young gun opener Jakob Woinarski (3/45), bringing about yet another rescue mission from superstar all-rounders Steve Spoljaric and Matt Chasemore. The two have been relied upon particularly heavily all season - perhaps too much so - and this time their mission proved a bridge too far as they were both removed after strong starts - Spoljaric for a near run-a-ball 41 and Chasemore, finally, for 61 after holding the innings together. Disappointingly for Cranbourne, Jake Harrington (22) was the side’s only other batsman to reach double figures as Chathura Athukorala and Ian Daniel claimed 4/39 and 2/16 respectively. Daniel’s brilliant all-around season continued in the Mordialloc innings, top-scoring with 84 after leading a fight-back when the side also lost two early scalps. Ultimately, the visitors passed the Eagles a ball into the 37th over. Despite knocking off Buckley Ridges at Arch Brown Reserve, Berwick has also missed the finals - finishing the season in sixth spot, three points and percentage adrift of Heinz Southern Districts. The in-form Buckley, which hadn’t lost since Round 4, was rolled for just 139 in the 35th over thanks to a brilliant performance with the ball from Cory Bevan, who finished with 5/29. In reply, the Bears (7/141) chased the runs down with more than 10 overs to spare - led by opener Darren de Souza (55 not out) and Wookey Medal fancy Jarrod Armitage (37). Top-of-the-table Hallam Kalora Park predictably proved far too strong in its matchup of Turf 1’s polar opposites against the relegation-bound Parkfield - despite being restricted to just 145 after being sent in to bat. Ben Hillard (43) continued his run of strong form with the willow over recent rounds while Jagveer Hayer top-scored with 44. Parkfield endured an epic collapse in its reply after openers Shane Bell (20) and Tanil Dehigaspitiya (34) put on 54 for the opening wicket. Hawks relish a return to the top By David Nagel Hallam-Kalora Park will look to rubber stamp an amazing climb up the ranks of the DDCA Turf 1 competition when it takes on Mordialloc in this weekend’s major semifinal at Hallam. The top-of-the-table Hawks will take part in their first finals series since 2010, an adventure that fell one step short of glory in the season-decider against Buckley Ridges. A string of mid-to-lower finishes since then has given no indication of the Hawks rapid rise to prominence this season. Two remaining members of that run through to the 2010 grand final, Corey and Leigh Booth, have been joined by a string of all-rounders all keen to make their mark. Corey has been hard to dismiss this season, making 256 runs at an average of 85, while Leigh has averaged close to 30 at the top of the order. Leigh’s opening battles with sidekick Ben Hillard (338 at 33.8) have been crucial for the Hawks, giving them a solid foundation to build on. The Hawks have been well served by the all-round talents of Jagveer Hayer, Jordan Hammond and skipper Steve Gilmour, who have all played key roles in a four-game winning streak heading into this week’s grand final qualifier. Those wins came against Narre Warren, Springvale South, Dingley and Parkfield -teams outside the top-four. The Hawks last mission against a fellow finals contender saw them go down in a round seven one-dayer at Mordialloc, this weekend’s opponent. In semi-final two, Buckley Ridges will begin its quest for a third title in the last eight years when it takes on perennial finalist Heinz Southern Districts in a cut-throat eliminator at Park Oval. The Bucks return to the big stage for the first time since 2012/13, when they had the ultimate success story against Mordialloc. Daniel Watson showed his true class back then, scoring 188 not out in the grand final, and will be keen to turn back the clock despite a mediocre year with the willow. Watson has been more of a threat with the ball this season, leaving the consistent run-scoring duties to the likes of Susantha Pradeep and Jayson Hobbs. The Cobras have finished fourth for the fourth consecutive season and are looking to make their second grand final through that journey. A Cavalier approach has Bogut back in the spotlight By Russell Bennett Endeavour Hills product Andrew Bogut will soon get the chance to become the first Aussie in history to win NBA championships with two different franchises. It seems like just yesterday that LeBron James held the Larry O’Brien trophy aloft for the first time as a Cleveland Cavalier, and now Bogut has the chance to do the same. The seven-footer has signed with Cleveland, the great modern day rivals of his former franchise, the Golden State Warriors after clearing waivers following his buyout from the Philadelphia 76ers. It’s been an action-packed period for Bogut, too, since being a part of the Warriors franchise that relinquished a 3-1 NBA Finals lead to go down to the Cavaliers in seven games - handing long-suffering Cleveland fans their first major sporting title of any description in 52 years. Bogut was then a key component of the Golden State trade with the Dallas Mavericks that

helped the bay area franchise free up enough salary cap space. They signed MVP-winning superstar Kevin Durant to become part of a three-headed monster with ‘Splash Brothers’ Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. It became clear early on that Bogut was a kind of square peg in a round hole in Dallas, but the former number one overall pick earned rave reviews from renowned Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle for doing everything possible in the best interests of the franchise. When the Mavs started to slump badly, Bogut even famously suggested he should come off the bench as Dirk Nowitzki’s back-up - rather than partner the Dallas legend in the starting front court. The Aussie big man has always had a selfless, team-first mentality and it’s what made him such a key component of the Warriors team that won the 2015 title - that time over James’ Cavaliers. But now Bogut will be moving heaven and earth to beat the likes of Curry, Durant and

Thompson. Dallas recently traded him to the 76ers in a trade involving highly touted young big man Nerlens Noel. Bogut’s management then negotiated a buyout with the rebuilding Philadelphia and did so before March 1 - allowing the former Dandenong Ranger to be playoff-eligible for a new team. The 32-year-old had plenty of suitors, too - reportedly including the red-hot Houston Rockets; perennial title contenders the San Antonio Spurs; and the super impressive Boston Celtics ... the winningest franchise in NBA history. But the supremely talented passer and ruthless interior defender opted for the Cavs - again the strongest team in the East, again led by one of the greatest players of all-time in ‘King James’, and again - for the third time in as many seasons - on a collision path with the Warriors. Panthers and Swans go through By Russell Bennett VICTORIAN PREMIER REVIEW - ROUND 17 (DAY TWO) THE Dandenong Panthers will still enter the Victorian Premier Cricket finals as the second seed despite a heavy defeat on the weekend to the struggling St Kilda. After the home side piled on a commanding 6/335 on day one of their two-dayer at Harry Trott Oval in Albert Park, the Panthers stumbled badly - falling to 2/25 and then 6/89 before ultimately falling more than 100 runs short. St Kilda was led brilliantly in its innings by twin century-makers Lachlan Holmes (140) and Damon Egan (115), who laid the platform for their side’s impressive total with a 240-plus run stand for the second wicket, while James Nanopoulos (3/71) and Peter Cassidy (3/62) between them took all six wickets to fall. While it may have been an upset result for punters, Mick’s Angel provided her owner and trainer a moment of unbridled joy at Sandown Park on Thursday night. For ecstatic trainer Allan Meyer, the win was one of the most satisfying moments in a training career that’s spanned the best part of two decades. “I’ve had three seconds but I’ve never won one here on a Thursday night. It’s an honour, I’ll give you the tip,” he said after the race. “You know how you like to tick things off in your life? Winning at Sandown is one of those boxes ticked. My wife Kaye and I only have two dogs, but they’re our life. I’m retired, I get up in the morning and look after the dogs. We’re just really happy.” While Mick’s Angel’s breakthrough win was a career highlight for the successful trainer, it was an emotional victory for her owner, Faye Craig. “Faye is one of the best owners a trainer could ask for,” Meyer continued. “I met her husband Brian - ‘Mick’ as he was known to his mates - at the Hoppers Club and we
