Barriers broken By Monique Kuzeff As the nation begins to see positive developments and improvements for women in sport, local woman Jacqui Hawkins wanted to give a voice to women in her own sporting community. Last week the 25-year-old from Staghorn Flat was excited to launch her initiative ‘She KMF’ (She Keeps Moving Forward) which aims to identify current opportunities, strengths and barriers that women may face in their sport. Hawkins developed an online questionnaire, distributing it to local sporting clubs to administer to their female athletes in order to create a dialogue around the strengths and issues that those women faced. She KMF will collect the completed surveys to gain an understanding of the local issues that need to be addressed to help female athletes to overcome certain challenges. For Hawkins, it all began two years ago when she became the recipient of a $500 grant through Albury-Wodonga Latrobe University’s ‘empowerment grants’. The grant encouraged Hawkins to develop a business plan based on her concept to assist and support local female sportspeople. Hawkins said She KMF offered
a voice to females participating in the sporting community. “It allows them to talk about their opportunities or potential barriers or even just their experience as a female within the sporting community,” Hawkins said. “2017 has been quite an exciting year for females in sport, as we’ve seen the development of the women’s football league and improvements in cricket with their pay, “She KMF targets a different market and has much more of a rural and regional focus. “For female athletes the equality between genders is dispersed so it enables them to have that platform to voice their issues. Hawkins said she wanted to administer women in sport forums that will include key athletes, both local and national, who will come along and speak to the local female sportspeople. “She KMF is about the movement of women in sport and it’s such a big topic at the moment and people are talking about it and want to see more women in sport,” Hawkins said. “It is a local avenue for female sportspeople to participate in conversation around sport and I think it’s a significant step in terms of the shifting paradigm at the moment.”
Hawkins is currently studying her Masters in International Relations at the Australian National University and is currently on the Border Trust committee. She has been heavily involved in the sporting community over many years through various kinds of sport including soccer and cycling. She said her concept flourished from her own desire to have a platform to talk about the sports she was involved in and the challenges she had faced. “The reason why I started this is because I wished there was a platform for women in sport and I wanted to create it to ensure we represent what women in sport here want as well,” she said. “We don’t have anything around here of that nature. “I think the forum would be really exciting because it’s never been done here, as those types of events are normally held in metropolitan areas. “Sport is a big part of the fabric in rural and regional communities. By Monique Kuzeff Pairing education with practical experience is a great way for university students to get a feel for the industry being studied, according to two Latrobe University students who recently completed a 10-week Industry Cadetship Program. Mike Dunn and Adriana Galanakis are about to embark on their second year studying a Bachelor of Science at the university and have a keen interest in aquatic ecology. The difference between these two students and their peers is that they have gained some invaluable insight in to work life through conducting their own research project at the Murray-Darling Fresh Water Research Centre (MDFRC). They worked alongside some leading research staff including CSIRO’s Dr Heather McGinness, and MDFRC’s Dr Daryl Nielsen and Rebecca Durant, and former MDFRC Dr Darren Baldwin. Miss Galanakis investigated the floatability of aquatic plants seeds during floods, undertaking floatation experiments to understand how long the seeds are able to float. She said it was a “great experience” to be able to work at the MDFRC together with the leading research staff. “It’s very different than just doing lessons and seeing later on what work in your area would be like,” Miss Glanakis said. “It was good because I was actually investigating some-

Latrobe University students Mike Dunn and Adriana Galanakis undertook individual research projects at the Picture: MONIQUE KUZEFF MDFRC as cadets. 165111 thing that isn’t really known, whereas in lectures its already set so you will know what the outcome will be. “The experience of conducting a whole experiment and looking at the whole outcome, considering what could go wrong and then adjusting your methods accordingly was invaluable.” For Mr Dunn the cadet program enabled him to research the energy requirement for ibis chicks and determine how much energy it would take to raise a chick from birth to when it fledges. “It’s been a fantastic experience and it was quite a competitive process to get this cadetship,” Mr Dunn said. “It provides such a good in-
sight in to the type of job I hope to get when I graduate.” Mr Dunn said that while the research project was “tough” it was very “invaluable”. “I’ve been learning the processes of how to undertake a proper research project and looking in to something that hasn’t been done before. “You don’t get to do those kinds of things in your first year studying a science degree where the outcome of a project you do is already known.” The cadet program is available to Latrobe University undergraduate students who are completing their second or third year of university and are interested in pursuing a career in aquatic ecology.
Heads will soon be raised in support of one of Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group’s biggest annual fund-raising events - Skydive Day! BOCAG already has 44 people committed to the big leap, which will happen on 4 and 5 March. The group is still welcoming anyone interested in joining in on the day. Each jump costs $500 with $100 of it going directly to BOCAG. Last year the not-for-profit organisation raised $3000 through the fund-raiser, with community personalities such as the Wodonga mayor Anna Speedie and Pip from 105.7 Triple M taking the leap. BOCAG president Heather Watts also participated, overcoming her fears through her determination to support the cause and she said she would “do it again”. “It’s wonderful when you are up there and floating, you can see all around and hear everybody singing out to you,” Ms Watts said. “It’s really peaceful and really surreal when you first get out of the plane.” This year many community personalities such as Matt from 105.7 Triple M, Wodonga councillor Danny Lowe, and William Bonnici from Bonnici and Associates First National Real Estate will be participating in the fund-raiser. It’s time to beat the bite Hume and Loddon Mallee regions have received the majority of reports of Ross River Virus this year. As of 13 February, there have been 1012 notifications of Ross River Virus across the state of Victoria - nearly 10 times greater than the previous major floods. There have been 329 reports of the mosquito induced virus in the Hume region and 238 reports in the Loddon Mallee region. Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Charles Guest said that recent rain and relatively warm weather had
created conditions ideal for mosquito breeding and there had been a major increase in mosquito numbers as a result. “This summer, we are now seeing the biggest increase of Ross River Virus cases since the last major floods of 2010,” Professor Guest said. In 2011, there were 103 notifications of Ross River Virus up until 13 February. Across Victoria, 18 high-risk and flood-affected councils have shared in an extra $4.6 million to combat the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Of these, 11 councils are now un-
dertaking control measures for the first time through the treatment of mosquito breeding sites. Control measures range from trapping mosquitoes to estimate numbers, testing sentinel chickens, using control agents to stop mosquito larvae from growing and fogging where numbers are excessive. Symptoms for Ross River Virus are fever, headache, aching muscles and/or joints and fatigue. People experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention from
their GP or their local hospital. Onset of symptoms may be from two to 14 days following a mosquito bite. Professor Guest said everyone could take simple steps to avoid bites and protect yourself and your family against mosquito-borne diseases. “Mosquitoes are at their most active at dawn and dusk, although some species can be present and bite throughout the day,” Professor Guest said. “Householders should ensure that insect screens fitted to doors and windows are in good condition.
“Residents are encouraged to wear long, loose-fitting clothing and use a suitable insect repellent containing picaridin or DEET as an active ingredient on exposed skin areas. “Mosquito numbers can be reduced by getting rid of stagnant water around the home or campsites.” Information on protecting against mosquito bites is available on the Beat the Bite campaign page on the Better Health Channel at: https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/campaigns/beatthe-bite
Charity house ready to go under the hammer, for good By Monique Kuzeff A house built to sell off for charity now stands completed in Knowles Court, Thurgoona, ready to be put under the hammer on Saturday 18 March. A modern, natural light-filled and energy efficient four-bedroom home was constructed over the past seven months as a charity project by local builder David Hawkins of Green Homes Australia and his wife Beth to raise funds for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre (AWRCC) Trust Fund. The Charity House Auction Project was made possible with the voluntary input of 42 businesses and tradespeople who donated their time and materials. Mr Hawkins said the project was inspired after a discussion with Beth 18 months ago on doing something for the community. “She’s a cancer nurse and I’m a builder so we had a bit of talk about combining our occupations so that’s where the whole process started,” Mr Hawkins said. He said one of the main aspects of the house was the energy efficiency that is largely aided by the natural lighting. “We wanted to find a block that had perfect

The house also has double-glazed windows with aluminum frame, solar-boosted hot water system, and a roof catchment feeding in to a 5000-litre rainwater tank. AWRCC Trust Fund will receive the profit made on the house - the difference in between the
cost of constructing the house and the closing sale price. William Bonnici, director of Bonnici and Associates First National Real Estate, believes the house to be valued at about $400,000 and expects a “huge” turnout on auction day. “This might even be a great opportunity for an investor with proximity to Charles Sturt University and some magnificent schools here, and Thurgoona is bursting at the seams it’s growing so quickly,” Mr Bonnici said. AWRCC Trust Fund secretary Geoff Smith said community fund-raising was “absolutely vital” for the Trust Fund and was “appreciative” of all of those who jumped on board. “The original funding constructed the cancer centre and any subsequent things we need to purchase such as new equipment or personal development for staff or support of research will have to be funded out of the funding,” Mr Smith said. “The AWRCC Trust Fund is the main form of doing that at the moment. “I am hopeful there will be a big roll up of people coming along on 18 March to put their hand up and bid for it.” The house will be open for inspection in the lead up to the auction with details available on all major real estate websites.

Plan for mobile rural childcare By Monique Kuzeff When Federal Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham visited Wodonga in November, his purpose was to gain a broader understanding of the innovative education and training that regional Australia had to offer. He met up with Indi MP Cathy McGowan, who questioned him on childcare reform and how he could better assist families living in small country towns that don’t have access to childcare centres. Ms McGowan has advocated for mobile childcare for a long time now and while there have been subtle improvements, she still remains ambivalent about the progress. “I have been working very closely with the Minister to make it work but one of the things I’ve said to the Minister is that you need to do different things for small country towns where they don’t have childcare centres,” Ms McGowan said. “For those small country towns that don’t have childcare centres operating out of the community, mobile childcare is appropriate. “Operating out of the Community College in Wodonga we have about 50 registered childcare workers employed who every day hop in a car in twos or threes and go out to registered places like a hall and provide a centre for how many days it's required.”

Ms McGowan says the government's explanation of its childcare reform package fails to provide certainty for rural Picture: MONIQUE KUZEFF and regional families. 165163 According to Ms McGowan, the government has admitted it has not done the modelling of the impact of proposed childcare reforms on rural families using mobile childcare services. “The reassurances from the government about how mobile childcare services will be funded in the future are neither guaranteed nor accountable in the proposed legislation,” she said. “The funding for all services outside urban centre-based care has been lumped into the Com-
munity Child Care Fund. This is a competitive fund and there are no guidelines about how it is to be apportioned.” Ms McGowan said the childcare subsidy only applied to families who took their child to a purpose-built childcare centre. “If you take your child to a childcare centre you will get the subsidy but if you don’t have a childcare centre, even if you do get a subsidy, it is no use to you because there is no service,” she said.
In April, the heart of Wodonga will see a new addition to its stretch of shops but there is something a little bit different about this one. The new shop, which will be located at 156 High Street will be an MS Community Shop where the profits will go directly towards helping people affected by multiple sclerosis. But while the community shop is due to open in April, it is desperately calling out for volunteers to assist with setting it up and helping to run the store on a weekly basis. MS retail shop support manager Kerry Reiter-Lynch said the aim of the MS Community Shops was to promote the work of MS and to help those suffering with the disease to face their challenges and retain their dreams. She said Wodonga was singled out as being a great location to set up this kind of shop

because of the outstanding “community involvement”. “It was a great shopping centre and we thought it was very much community orientated,” Ms Reiter-Lynch said. “We need that kind of support from the grassroots community and we’ve also heard that people really like to volunteer and support charities in the area. “Without that community support of volunteers the shop wouldn’t run as effectively as it does.” Ms Reiter-Lynch said she hoped to have volunteers by now so that she could start setting up the store, and urged anyone who was interested in being part of the community shop to get on board. “When we take on board the volunteers they actually help set up the shop before we open so they learn about how we operate and the standard, stock and the way we deck it out,” she said. “There are many reasons
why people might want to volunteer. In Melbourne a lot of new people who don’t come from Australia come in to meet people and learn conversational English. “Others want to give back to the community or learn some new skills such as how to operate a register and do retail, while some are just lonely at home and want to get out and meet people.” Ms Reiter-Lynch is calling out for about 20 volunteers who could work rostered hours between 9.30am and 5pm. The shop would contain high quality donated goods from the community and would be available to anyone. MS currently runs 11 community shops, with one in the Australia Capital Territory and 10 throughout regional and metropolitan Victoria. Artworks over the decades By Monique Kuzeff Hundreds of framed artworks are being displayed in the Murray Art Museum Albury’s latest interactive exhibition, and have been collected, donated and gifted to the gallery over 70 years. The exhibition ‘Yours: 70 Years of Collecting’ showcases some of the dynamic art collection that Albury has accumulated over the seven decades which includes prints, paintings, drawings and photographs from the likes of local artists and renowned artists. The exhibition is designed to be like a collection store replica with the works ranging from small, medium to large in size hanging from the roof to the floor. “Photography is a big part of our collection, and we’ve got works on paper such as drawing, collage, water colours, oil paintings, prints, etches, and all different kinds of genres of paintings,” MAMA director Bree Pickering said. “We tried to keep it as open as possible because we really want our audience to curate, so we didn’t want to lead too much. “We are representing a period of time and trying to represent as many mediums as possible.”
The collection began in 1947 with the Albury Art Prize which provided a foundation for the city’s art collection, and over the years it grew to over 2000 art works as it is today. The former Albury Gallery was established to house the artwork which then expanded quickly through donations and gifts from artists all over the world. “MAMA is a custodian, and this (exhibition) is an opportunity for us to really show what our role is and at the same time share as much as the collection as we possibly can with our audience,” Ms Pickering said. Included in the exhibition are three walls plastered with newspaper articles covering the news and controversy of the collections 70-year history. Another part of the exhibition is the ‘Mine. Curated by you’ which gives the audience an opportunity to take on the role of curator and build an exhibition for the wall in the ANZ Zauner Gallery. A new public exhibition will be chosen and installed each week through the duration of ‘Yours’. The Yours exhibition will run until Monday 17 April in the MAMA’s Paul Ramsay Gallery and is free entry to the public.

Mercy Health Albury (MHA) Palliative Care is seeking volunteer support workers to join its team. Palliative Care is a holistic support service available to people and their families who have been diagnosed with a non-curative and life-limiting illness. Volunteer support workers play an integral part in the care role through their learned skills by offering friendship, companionship, respite and time, which is not always otherwise available. They also provide spiritual, physical, social and emotional care MHA Palliative Care support co-ordinator Louisa Thompson said it is an unsettling time of life for persons with an advanced illness, and Palliative Care provided empowerment for them. “We aim to empower people with information and education so they can continue to make their own informed decisions on their individual situation,” Ms Thompson said. “It’s about taking a holistic approach and looking at a person’s physical, social, emotional and
spiritual needs so they do not live in isolation.” Ms Thompson said often people who volunteered in the organisation had received help from palliative care. “They say it is the help they received in a time they needed it most that they wanted to give back. “Our volunteers come from all walks of life and we are looking for people who have flexibility and variety in the role.” Ms Thompson encouraged anyone who was interested and would like further information about the role, to not hesitate to contact her. Volunteers are both male and female, young and mature aged and are as unique as the people they are matched to support, Ms Thompson said. “Volunteers are chosen for their warmth and understanding, emotional maturity, acceptance of others and ability to respect confidentiality.” “They are to offer four hours a week to the person or family they are selected to support.” Successful applicants will participate in a fiveday training program commencing at the end of March. An historic milestone in Mercy Health’s journey towards culturally safe healthcare was celebrated last Wednesday with the formal launch of the organisation’s Health Services Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Mercy Health has long recognised the need to provide services and work environments that are appropriate, accessible, and sensitive to the culture and values of First Australians. The community joined Mercy Health RAP Committee members, staff and leadership at Werribee Mercy Hospital in Melbourne to mark this significant event. Celebrations included a performance from acclaimed singer/songwriter and Mutti Mutti man Kutcha Edwards. Chief Executive-Health Services Linda Mellors said the RAP launch was a watershed moment in the organisation’s history. “This is an extremely exciting and important development in our commitment to equity and access in our services,” she said. “Our RAP calls on all staff to think carefully about the factors that contribute to health disparity.”

Wheely great times As we say goodbye to summer and head into my favourite time of the year for motorcycling, there is plenty on offer for all. The Albury Wodonga motorcycle club has run a series of practice nights down at the causeway facility, with fantastic numbers attending. Motocross season has kicked off locally with the first round of the Northern regions series being run last weekend at Cobram, with a large contingent of local riders competing. The end of January saw the running of the annual Phillip Island international classic meeting which attracts entries from around the world and which once again had local riders competing with great distinction. Alex Phillis being a standout, taking a win in the final race of the international challenge ahead of international rider Jeremy McWilliams. The first round of the three-round Sky lift series will be run this Saturday the 25th with practice beginning from 5.15 pm and racing starting from 6.30 pm. This is the sixth year this series has been held and it promises to be an exciting event and is well worth a look if you want to see action-packed, handlebar to handlebar racing! With family passes just $35 and children under 12 free, it is a great night out for all the family. This weekend also sees the opening round of the world superbike championship being run at Phillip Island and recently I was fortunate enough to be in attendance at a national conference with Kawasaki when Jonathan Rea the reigning world superbike champion was the surprise guest for the night. He was interviewed then threw open questions to the floor and I must say, I was very impressed by his openness and honesty. He truly is a great ambassador for motorcycling and a very genuine and humble person. While on the subject of road racing Moto GP has just concluded its second pre season test at Phillip Island and Yamaha’s new signing of Maverick Vinales came out on top ahead of Marc Marquez. It is shaping up to be another ripper year in racing. Celebrating the diversity that is motorcycling the Albury Wodonga classic and enthusiast motorcycle club had a very successful event last weekend at the Wicked Virgin winery in Rutherglen with a great roll-up of classic motorcycles from many years. March will see us attending Henty for wheel drive expo showcasing the amazing Yamaha YXZ 1000 pure sports side by side. If you are heading out, call in and say hello. It definitely is a busy and exciting time of year in the motorcycle world! Until next month, safe riding all!

Protecting the interior Try to add up the hours you spend in your car. It’s a lot, isn’t it? Commutes, errand runs and road trips can have you sitting in those bucket seats for hours on end, and during that time, you and your passengers are actually living in the interior. That means smudges on the windows, scratches on the dash and food in the seat crevices accumulate and leave you wondering what happened to the spotless interior you swear it had when you first bought the car. A quick clean Luckily, it’s not that difficult to keep a car’s cabin from looking a little too, well, lived in. First things first, get something to stuff your trash into. Just use a plastic bag or a container you don’t use around the house and throw it in the backseat. You can even affix a temporary hook to the door or seat to keep things even neater. Every once in a while, take it out and relish in the fact that you haven’t spent an hour cleaning up. Keeping trash off the floor also preserves your carpets, which can get stained from any number of items. The idea of taking a rag to your dash and leather seats is made easier if you have them on-hand. The key here is to just use a little bit of soapy water to wipe the surfaces of your car - some cleaning products contain alcohols that prematurely dry and age the materials by reducing the flexibility in the vinyl. Store a small spray bottle of
your homemade cleaning fluid and a rag under your seat or in a storage bin for access when you’re waiting for your kids to get out of school or sitting in that crazy-long drive-through line. This will also come in handy when an emergency spill happens. Lastly, keep your car smelling like roses (or at least a laundromat) by adding dryer sheets under the seats. Weather resistant You can’t discount the impact weather has on your vehicle either. In summer, sandy feet can quickly make a mess of an interior, and dare we mention the destruction caused by mud and snow? If you spend a lot of time ducking in and out of the elements, you might want to grab some all-weather floor mats. They’re easy to clean and do a great job of keeping the muck in one place. The sun’s rays can also wreak havoc on your car’s surfaces, causing vinyl to crack over time and materials to fade. A simple solution is to regularly put a sunshade on the windshield. They’re inexpensive and help to keep your interior looking new. Saving money on repair work and cleaning comes more easily when you take the time to make preventative care a priority. Not only will these tricks make your car a nicer place to be, keeping grime out of your ride will cut down on large maintenance costs in the future and will help to retain its value over time.

This great army is human-
ity’s last line of defence and while Damon becomes part of the solution, he’s not a oneman white saviour. This is very much an ensemble cast and though one of the leading commanders is a woman she is no mere love interest or damsel in distress. It’s easy to think you know where this movie is going but Zhang Yimou is a clever man and the story he crafts is crazy, beautifully shot, full of action and ultimately a pretty entertaining piece of cinema. - Tania Phillips

Following a highly successful tour of Canada and the UK in 2016, the multi-award winning musical comedy, The Orchid and the Crow, is set to weave its magic here during a Butter Factory season from 21 to 25 March. Reflecting on Daniel’s real life experiences, The Orchid and the Crow is a solo performance: part story-telling, part cabaret, part theatre, featuring original songs from the awardwinning writers of Die Roten Punkte. Segueing between rock, pop, and contemporary opera, Daniel effortlessly draws the audience into the inspiring tale of his almost-death experience. This is a great big action film that somehow neatly side-steps around all the cliches and tropes of great big action films. Directed by Zhang Yimou, the man behind the 1991 classic Raise the Red Lantern, this movie is every bit as visually beautiful as his earlier work, with a cast of seemingly thousands - including three Europeans. And there we have the source of the negativity plaguing this movie - until you see it. It is easy to dismiss this as a Matt Damon vehicle but it really isn’t. As my daughter put it - “Damon is a human subtitle for Western audiences used to enter the world of a Chinese monster movie”. He is our window into China around 1050 AD, the reason that a lot of the dialogue can be in English (there are still subtitles in places though) and as much plot device as hero. Damon and fellow westerner Pedro Pascal form part of a band of mercenaries in search of the fabled “black powder”. The group have trekked halfway across the known world to

Ominous little development The notorious Beechworth Lunatic Asylum has the honour of helping unveil their most ominous exhibitors so far. The Baby Farmer, a confronting yet ambitious work by Australia’s most bizarre performers, The Laudanum Project, is here. Presented in a variety of medias (performance, fine art exhibition, and art-based book) this story of a helpless child and her unbalanced mother forms an ever-shifting musical tapestry, a tale of destiny, lost innocence, and the nature of evil. The nature of the work is fluid, with theatre patrons and journalists continually floored by the talent on show: “Evoking Jean Genet and the penny dreadful, it both thrills and repulses, and will haunt you for days.” - Christopher Fieldus, Hana Theatre Journal. The Laudanum Project has shocked audiences since 2009, combining the darkest concepts with the highest quality of writing, performance, and music. “ ... an unsettling piece of raconteur theatre but it is also a great piece of theatre.” - Myron My, Theatre Press. Alongside the unsettling performance, Victorian artist Chloe Neath’s exquisite artwork from the book will be exhibited, each piece intricately detailed charcoal on brown paper, each piece both disturbing and beautiful, each piece for sale, along with signed copies of the published work.

Regional homes by the beach are continuing to show excellent growth in property values, according to REIV statistics. The institute’s data for the final quarter of 2016 shows that five of the top 10 most expensive locations are currently on the coast. Barwon Heads continues to lead the way as the top-priced town in regional Victoria, rising 4.7 per cent in the December quarter to a median price of $916,250. The nearby town of Queenscliff was second on the list, with the town’s median price rising 6.7 per cent in the last three months of the year to $752,500. Four other beachside towns on the Surf Coast also recorded some of the state’s highest median house prices, including Lorne ($730,000), Jan Juc ($710,000), Torquay ($695,000) and Anglesea ($670,000). The nearby city of Geelong and its suburb of Newtown also made the top 10 - both with a median price of $680,000 - following strong annual growth of 11 and 8.8 per cent respectively. Further afield, Lake Wendouree recorded a median price of $660,000 in the December quarter, while house prices in Gisborne rose 5.5 per cent over the same period to a median of $662,500.
Meanwhile, there are many affordable locations in regional Victoria, which are well below the statewide median price of $358,000. These are located around the state, from the west to Gippsland. One of the state’s most affordable locations is Kerang, with a median price of $136,000. However interest from homebuyers continues to grow, with the median price increasing in the final three months of last year. Stawell also offers affordability with a median house price of $215,000, despite house prices in the town increasing more than 10 per cent over the past year. The LaTrobe Valley towns of Morwell and Churchill were also among the most affordable locations - with Morwell rising 3.1 per cent to $165,000 in the December quarter, and Churchill with a median of $195,000. However, for buyers seeking affordability near the coast, the beachside town of Loch Sport in Central Gippsland was one of the most affordable locations in Victoria with a median house price of $187,500. Local Sport Wright on the target By Paul Ingwersen Another balmy border Wednesday evening and another round of summer criterium racing but with a difference last week as the women shone through. Maddie Wright got one on the men, setting an all-time fastest lap and Jodie Nicholls took out the D Grade with a strong solo finish. The classy A grade field started at a normal pace, but by lap two there was no easing into the race or chance to warm up with the intentions clear. Jess Featonby attacked solo to be chased by Neil van der Ploeg and the race shattered the way a crystal vase responds when dropped on tiles. Riders, like the shards of glass, were spread everywhere. Pain the only expression on their faces, and panic the reaction, as they desperately tried to make contact with the front aggressors. Some never made it and the field was culled with DNFs appearing from lap three. Towards the front, there were some super efforts by the likes of Charly McMillan, Maddie Wright, Marcus Warner and Brett Nicholls to get back on terms with Featonby and van der Ploeg. Then on lap three as they closed the gap, Maddie Wright, mixing it with the strong
boys, set the record of 2:00 flat on the official Strava lap timer averaging 46.9km/ hr over the 1.5km circuit. The time suggests it won’t be long before the first sub 2:00 minute lap appears. The front of the race reformed and the next six laps were all 2:10 or faster as Featonby attacked, McMillan chased or van der Ploeg set a tempo that in music terms could only be described as allegro vivace. The only antidote to a Featonby attack was for van der Ploeg to ride his very fast tempo on the front. Both scenarios dishing out the pain, either constantly or sharper spurts of the same. From lap 10, there was a slight pause and the race then alternated between moderato and presto as attacks were chased down, riders looked at each other and then attacked again. Coming into the bell lap Brett Nicholls took a flier, and led the diminished bunch by a few seconds. for much of the final kilometre. McMillan led the chase and rounding the last corner, in any other grade, the gap would have been enough for Nicholls to win, but the black kit of van der Ploeg and then Featonby and Marcus Warner flashed by to push him down to 4th. Maddie Wright took 5th, only seconds off the winners and with the lap record secured for at least the

Mogul Skiing World Cup title a first for Cox Wodonga’s Britt Cox has created history, becoming the first Australian female to win a Mogul Skiing World Cup title, in a mixed event where she did just enough in the Dual Mogul event in Tazawako, Japan. After victory in single moguls, the 22-year-old NSWIS skier went down in round 16 to Russian Marika Pertakhiya. Fortunately for Cox, her closest rivals, Perrine Laffont of France and Justine Dufour-Lapointe of Canada were also unable to progress to the later rounds of the event. Socceroo nightmare Archie Thompson’s fairytale return to the Border turned into a nightmare when the former Socceroo was denied not once but twice by the crossbar on Saturday night. The former Melbourne Victory cult hero cut a forlorn figure after the final whistle, head in his lap and boots tossed to one side in front of the goals that had proved his nemesis. Thompson was making his first home game appearance for NPL side Murray United at La Trobe University. But a lacklustre first half saw the home side trailing Eastern Lions 1-0 at the break, the advantage doubled when a penalty was awarded against the run of play midway through the second stanza. United with Thompson directing traffic and with the introduction after the break of Melkie Woldemichael began to dominate possession and chances. Thompson’s header from a Darcy Pawlik corner cannoned into the crossbar and when Woldemichael was brought down in the box his penalty met a similar fate. Woldemichael himself looked to have dragged one back with a volley that skimmed the crossbar in the dying minutes. Thompson believed he put too much pressure on his performance. “I wanted to turn up here and win a game off my own boot,” he said. “I need to get back to just enjoying game. “I’m still happy to be able to put on the Murray United shirt and play here just up the road from Mum. “It was good to be in front of this home crowd, I just wish the result had been different.” United take on Goulburn Valley Suns away on Saturday.
Sharks circle Rays in menacing and total victory By Monique Kuzeff Sharks showed some herb in their Ovens and Murray A Grade Women’s Round 15 waterpolo clash at the Wodonga Aquatic Venue on Sunday. The Sharks were in top form, defeating rivals Northside Stingrays by a massive 23-3. Meanwhile, in the other game Albury Tigers had a tougher time, pipping the Pool Pirates 5-2 in their match. Tigers currently sit at 35 points behind the Sharks who now lead with 37 points and only a few weeks to go. Pool Pirates are sitting just below Albury Tigers with a score of 33 points and Stingrays with 14 points. Round 16 will see Sharks play Albury Tigers on Friday night at 7.20pm at Wodonga while Stingrays and Pool Pirates play at Wodonga on Sunday morning at 10.25am.
