Cancer hits home PAKENHAM mother Julie Smith is no stranger to the heartbreak induced by the life-changing effects of cancer. However, despite her tragic experiences with the disease, the mother-offour will continue to be a shining light at this year’s Cardinia Relay for Life, leading the way for her relay team,
Best Foot Forward. “I’ve got a pretty painful story,” admitted 48-year-old Julie. “I’ve lost probably about 20 people that I’ve known in my life (to cancer)…but what I’ve been through, it’s made me a stronger person.” An integration teacher at Berwick’s Kambrya College, Julie is currently preparing to take part in her 10th relay
for life, captaining her team of relatives and friends. However, while the mother-of-four looks forward to the Relay for Life each year, it’s an emotional reminder of all she has lost to a disease that has continuously changed her life. “Back in 1991, we lost my mum,” explained Julie. “She was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 46…
she had a mastectomy and spent 10 years in and out of hospital…she died at 56.” “We only knew Mum as a really tired and sick person for that stage of her life,” said Julie, who admitted cancer took a toll on her mother. “(When she had the mastectomy) she kept crying about it…she felt like it had taken half her womanhood away. We kept on
telling her, it’s just a boob, it’s just a boob. Even my dad would say I don’t care, you can take them both if it means you live longer.” While Julie’s mother, Joy, eventually beat breast cancer, it would prove to only be the beginning of her troubles, a hospital accident uncovering yet another sickness. Scene a sea of pink Toomuc Cricket Club led by its president Vicky Downes, and the Pakenham Football Club. Just under $16,000 has been raised for the McGrath Foundation over the past four years, with $5030 raised for the cause this year. In a message posted on the Pakenham Cricket Club’s Facebook page on Sunday, president Phil Anning said: “To all the people who assisted in the setting up for the day and the work you did during the day and helping clean up this morning, I thank you from the bottom of my heart”. Players, both senior and junior, - in addition to their supporters - also got behind the cause by purchasing pink caps and bat grips, while the WGCA umpires also donned pink shirts. Next year organisers are hoping for a bumper crowd of 200 to pack out the pavilion at Toomuc Reserve.
By Russell Bennett There was a sea of pink at the Pakenham Cricket Club on Saturday for the Lions’ fourth annual Pink Ladies Luncheon to raise muchneeded funds for national breast cancer charity, the McGrath Foundation. A small army of volunteers associated with the club put in hours of tireless work to prepare the Toomuc Reserve pavilion for the function - held while Pakenham’s West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) Premier side took on neighbouring rivals Pakenham Upper-Toomuc on the front ground. The Gazette understands that there were around 170 in attendance for this year’s function up from the 65 who were there for the first year it was held. A whole host of local businesses and organisations graciously jumped behind the cause, including the Pakenham Upper-

Not many six-year-olds save $2000, let alone crowdfund and donate the money to help the homeless. Rebekah, now 7, pictured, had her conscience sparked after hearing about homelessness on the car radio last year. “I wanted to help people who don’t have shelter,” she said. The Berwick year two student’s donation has purchased about 20 purpose-built swags to distribute at Casey North Community Information and Support Service in Narre Warren. Her next fundraising effort will involve selling bath bombs.

Lunch is holding the line By Casey Neill A Pakenham fund-raising lunch for Nar Nar Goon’s struggling Light Horse and Field Artillery Museum was so successful there will be another. Jillian Ronald and Wendy Andrews organised the 12 February event to support museum curator Bernie Dingle and his Nar Nar Goon attraction, which is facing an uncertain future and needs urgent community support. The museum focuses on the Australian Army’s reliance on horses in war time and includes many original, unique and priceless artefacts. “The day was sold out and a great success,” Ms Ronald said. “Bernie spoke about stories from the wars and went through the display items. “A slide show reminded us why it is important to keep the collection together and in Cardinia Shire.” The lunch at Pakenham’s Cardinia Cultural Centre also launched a Friends of the Light Horse and Field Artillery Museum group. Membership is by donation, with all proceeds going to the museum. Ms Ronald said Bass MP Brian Paynter was the event’s MC and John Waterhouse, who works at Beaconshills College, explained that it was important to keep these collections so young people understand their history. A second lunch will be held at Clayton RSL on 2 April. Ticket information will become available via the Light Horse and Field Artillery Museum.

Join in the orange crew The Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) Pakenham Unit is recruiting new local members to play a vital role in ensuring the safety of their community. The role of VICSES volunteers is to work with all Victorians to build greater awareness, involvement and self-reliance during emergencies. As the control agency for flood, storm, tsunami and earthquakes, VICSES volunteers will also answer the call of the community and provide assistance in times of need. Volunteers receive accredited, recognised training as part of their role,
which could include general rescue, chainsaw operations, community education or media training. There are also roles in road crash rescue, radio communications, finance, administration and other specialities, including marine and alpine rescue. Pakenham SES Controller Andrew Graham said volunteering was a rewarding way of helping the community. “VICSES Pakenham Unit is a great place to meet new and interesting characters and the unit always welcomes newcomers,” he said. “One of the things that make SES
units so great is the diversity of members. You can have teachers working alongside electricians, retirees and university students. There really is a role for everyone at VICSES.” The Pakenham Unit is located at the Emergency Service Complex, Princes Highway, Pakenham and will be hosting an information evening on Monday 20 March 2017. Kokoda walk a challenge A 63-year-old man from Narre Warren will be taking on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea later this year in a bid to raise money for a sick young woman. Ray Spinks has been on a health kick for about 12 months and he has a set a goal to improve himself while helping 19-year-old Jade Kollmorgen pay for her cystic fibrosis treatments. “It all started when I wanted to do something for myself,” Mr Spinks said. “I have lost 21kg in the last 12 months and my fitness has never been like this before.” Mr Spinks’ personal trainer suggested he set himself some goals for his fitness and that was when his personal mission changed into a quest to help Ms Kollmorgen. Mr Spinks met Jade through his wife Kathryn who works with Ms Kollmorgen’s mother Rachel. “I was sitting at home having a conversation with my wife about walking the Kokoda Track and I said I would like to do it for a charity,” Mr Spinks said. “We thought about it for a bit, looked at each other and we both said ‘let’s do it for Jade’.” Since then, Mr Spinks has been training every day to the lead up to him leaving for Papua New Guinea on 20 April to take on the mammoth 90km walk.
Ms Kollmorgen has been dealing with the effects of cystic fibrosis her entire life and said it changes the way she is able to live and function. “Over the last year I have been in hospital more and more,” she said. “Last year was worst; I was in hospital eight or nine times for two weeks at a time.” “I even went overseas for my gap year and was in hospital for the start and end of the trip; it has become harder to deal with over the past year.” On top of the hours of breathing exercises she has to do every day, Ms Kollmorgen takes about 40 different tablets during the day to keep her symptoms under control. Mr Spinks is raising money for Ms Kollmorgen through a GoFundMe account where all the money generated will go directly to the Kollmorgen family to assist with the cost of Jade’s medications. “I don’t have a job and I am paying for all my medications and it’s a big thing,” Ms Kollmorgen said. “I have to use Centrelink money for that so any funding is really helpful to manage all that.” “My family is not well off and it is hard to keep up and pay for all my medications so this is going to be a big help.”
Mr Spinks said he had already had great support from his own employer Hettich as well as from local businesses he has approached. “I have had great support from a lot of people both through donating funds to get me to Kokoda as well as equipment to support me in my training,” he said. “I want to give my sincere thanks to Michael Malkoun from Brighton Porsche and Brighton Infiniti, Neil Richards from Kitchen Hardware Company and Joshua Huang from W.T. Hardware. “These are the companies that have sponsored me to get to Kokoda. “I also want to give special thanks to Rays Outdoors Fountain Gate, The Athletes Foot Fountain Gate and Merrell Shoes Fountain Gate for supplying footwear and equipment for my training and the trek.” Mr Spinks is very passionate about helping Ms Kollmorgen and raising the funds she needs to have the best possible quality of life. “At my age I never thought I could do anything like this but it is amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it,” he said. “I will not fail in this and I will not fail her.” To donate to Mr Spinks’ cause, go to www.gofundme.com/jadescystic-fibrosis-fight

Casey City’s Councillor Rosalie Crestani wants police to have more powers to act on cybercrime, after a number of fake social media profiles posing as her posted offensive content. Cr Crestani believes the fake profiles were created in the last few months, following her support of council’s move to compulsorily acquire land in Narre Warren North. The fake profiles have used the same photo as her official councillor Facebook profile and commented or posted material that Cr Crestani says does not represent her views. The fake posts were centred around indigenous Australians, calling the first peoples “lazy” and “inconsiderate”, a view that Cr Crestani said was not her own. “The posts were attacking the Aboriginal community and I was horrified,” Cr Crestani said. “It started around the decision for Mr Foy’s land; it popped up around this time and this is probably a left-wing attack,” she said. While the fake profiles have been taken down now, Cr Crestani says she would like to see some changes in the way online bullying is dealt with. “I would like to see a proper call centre for Facebook or what-haveyou to speak to real human beings,” she said. “I would also like police to have their hands on the IP addresses of those that set up the accounts and for police to have real teeth to deal with cyber bullying that comes from outside of Australia.” Cyber security expert at Monash University Dr Lennon Chang said once an impostor account had dam-
aged someone’s reputation, despite it being a form of identity theft, there wasn’t a lot of action police could take. “For the imposter, it is definitely a crime,” Dr Chang said. “Stealing someone’s profile and causing damage - it is definitely a crime but the issue is it is not easy to investigate and discover who has done it.” “Police can’t do a lot here, as the damage has been caused; what we can do in this situation is we can tell people it was fake and try to ask Facebook or the social media website to stop disseminating the messages.” Dr Chang said the creation of and damage caused by impostor accounts were the responsibility of the social media company to prevent, rather than the police to investigate. “It is more about corporate responsibility; the responsibility of the company to keep its clients safe rather than the police to investigate after.” Meanwhile, Cr Crestani has said she is disappointed with the way people have chosen to engage with her and says if someone has an issue they would like to raise, they should do it in person. “I think it is very cowardly - I don’t want to instigate violence or anything but if you have something to say, come and say it to my face,” she said. “Don’t try to wreck my reputation and standing with the community.” “People are welcome to call or contact me however and I would be grateful for the opportunity to try and fix it if it is not me.”

I am writing to defend the actions of Israel in occupying lands which were the subject of a letter by John Glazebrook in your newspaper (News, 19 January). Israel has been under attack by Palestinian terrorists for quite a number of years and in my opinion Israel has the right to defend itself from the many missiles and rockets that are fired in their direction by procuring a buffer between themselves and the aggressors.

As you are no doubt aware the coast is only approximately 30 to 40 kilometres from the occupied lands and if the lands were given back then the main cities of Israel and its airport would be under threat from these terrorists. That is the reason Israel has this buffer zone. John talks about the UNHRC and their resolution but let’s look at some of the members. China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iraq. Republic of Korea and Saudi Arabia to name a few. Do you think these countries should be lecturing Israel on human rights? To the ALP It’s not enough that when it comes to acknowledging receipt of my letter, it seems to be falling on deaf ears. A standard reply comes through, generated by a heartless computer like the rest of those in the political arena. The entire political system is corrupt: “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours, so they both scratch“ and continue to extend the life of parliament for the period of the term and guarantee a salary for three years. The whole scenario is a fake, a charade. Get real and do something for us who elected you - the issue I have raised is of vital importance. The poor have no place to rest their heads, they rest them on the streets of the CBD. Shame on you Labor who take pride in defending the poor and upholding their needs. There is a housing crisis - who can afford average priced homes at $500,000? Not in a lifetime, do something. Australia is bleeding at the seams - the poor are helpless. A visionary can easily solve the issue of housing. It’s simple, very simple. Commandeer land over the vast tracts of land above the rail tracks. This was done in the Melbourne CBD and today is the most prized real estate - Federation Square. I urge your party to alert the Liberals to build affordable apartments. I urge your party, the people’s party which has lost touch with the warp and woof of the social fabric of society. I will not stop my correspondence until I hear of a positive proposal for construction of affordable apartments. The banks have already expressed their opposition to the construction of apartments - it is disgusting that the banking industry does not care for the welfare of the poor. It’s about time that the banking industry was subjected to a Royal Commission, or very simply if the Labor Party has brains to propose far-reaching changes for control, I urge that your party proposes them through the parliamentary process. If the Liberals object to a Royal Commission, it’s time we got rid of the Royal Commission process and established a judiciary commission with more and more lay people on the commission, particularly those hurt by the banks like the farmers whose property has been seized by the banks for non-payment of loans during dry arid droughts, and all and sundry like me and you and us. The bottom line is we the people of Australia need affordable housing in the form of affordable apartments. Construction of this type of housing will generate job creation. Housing for the poor will cause a positive ripple effect on the economy and stir the economic growth of the country. Rudd’s policy extricated Australia out of the economic morass, into being the first country to triumph over the recession. I appeal to the Labor Party of Australia to address the issues raised by me. I appeal to the social justice movements of the various religious groups who claim to stand up for the sermon on the mount of Jesus Christ to act on those virtuous recommendations which will make them fighters for the needs of the poor. Economic theorists whole-heartedly subscribe to the economic theory that when a country creates positive policies which enhance the benefit of the poor, the entire country is enriched. Can the rich do without the poor? They can’t - we are all in it and part of the whole. The bottom line of this letter is: please build more affordable apartments. These are not the vituperations of an aimless person, but someone aho has stooped to sit on the pavement of the Melbourne CBD, share a meal and drink a beer gifted by a bleed-

Fighting crime Thankyou for Victoria Stone-Meadows’ article (News, 9 February) ‘Citizens against crime’ highlighting City of Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon’s intended ‘Law and Order’ forum at the Cranbourne Bowls Club on Wednesday 15 February. I’m convinced that there should be a far greater emphasis on crime prevention in the first place and all citizens should face the outcomes of all crime if caught and convicted. All vehicle drivers know that if they exceed speed limits, and are caught and convicted, the outcome is at least a fine, so why not crime? There seems to be a greater emphasis on rehabilitation of offenders than that of its prevention. What if the penalty for murder or importing hard drugs was to have both knees and elbows smashed with a baseball bat, then

hung upside down for 24 hours, then by the neck if still alive? Harsh? No, they should have known the outcome if caught and convicted, therefore human rights would not be an issue. Car theft, breaking and entering, and stealing when being armed, the restoration cost of any damage caused would have to be paid by the convicted offender(s). There possibly aren’t words in our dictionary which could describe the heartache and loss of a loved one brutally murdered, so why not inflict immense pain on the convicted offender? Likewise the possible time and going without to buy a car, the possible years taken to build up a business, the memories of loss losing those stolen possessions and the years of continued trauma after having a gun pointed at you or a knife held inches from your throat, so why not a permanent reminder of the difficulty and heartache and traumas conflicted on the convicted? I very strongly believe if similar outcomes were inflicted on the convicted lawbreakers and were demanded by the citizens of Australia there would be an immediate decline in crime. Lost youths’ life of crime By Cam Lucadou-Wells The good news is that police are making inroads into soaring youth crime rates in Melbourne’s south-east, said Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton. But Victoria’s top cops fear the young “hard core” offenders that police are arresting - and frustratingly re-arresting - are part of a lost generation who were living in a fantasy world and were destined for institutionalisation. Mr Ashton told a Casey Neighbourhood Watch meeting on 8 February that less than a dozen leaders of the Apex Gang had been out on more than 100 counts of bail. He noted that police were quickly arresting the repeat offenders and judges were tending to remand more in custody - which in turn was cooling the juvenile crime rate. However, offenders weren’t changing their behaviour. “We’ve got a whole group in that mid-teen range who I don’t know that we’re going to save,” Mr Ashton said. “There’s a group that are well-entrenched who I think are going to be institutionalised for most of their lives.” Police had made 18,000 more arrests in the past year but there were fewer offenders. Counter-intuitively, young offender numbers in Victoria were the second-lowest per capita nationally. “It shows we have a small group of really hard-core youth offenders stretching us to our limits,” he said. He was confident that police could help drive down the crime rate as low as 1-2 per cent growth by the second half of 2017. Last year, it had been climbing by 14 per cent but trending towards single digits in recent months. The alarming spate of home invasions and carjackings was dissipating due to higher remand rates for those offences, Mr Ashton said. But “softer-target” robberies of servos and supermarkets, particularly for cigarettes, were rising.

He said organised crime groups were behind the raids and were paying the young thieves for the cigarettes. The products would then be sold for “next to nothing” under retail counters. With a bevy of extra recruits over four years, a new resource allocation model, he was optimistic there would be relief for the south-east’s stretched police force. He noted recent technological advances which
were bringing police up to speed such as a rollout of up-to-date ballistic vests, clothes-mounted video cameras and a 24-7 air wing. Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill, the southern metro region commander who was also responsible for reducing car thefts, told the meeting that young car thieves were targeting luxury European models as a “badge of honour”. In their efforts to live a “gangster” lifestyle, they would then commit armed robberies and petrol drive-offs in their stolen cars. “They’re living in a fantasy world,” he said.

Cancer hits home From front page “(Mum) was in hospital, and the nurse got her out of her bed to make it, and she collapsed and broke her thigh in a couple of places,” said Julie. “So then (the doctors) gave her another scan and found her body was riddled with cancer through the bones.” “She fought (breast cancer) and she went into remission for a while, and we were really positive about it. There was about four years of no treatment then she had the surgery (for her thigh) and bang, our whole life was shattered.” However, while the hardest part for Julie was the fact her mother never got to meet any of Julie's four children, her experience with the life-changing disease was yet to continue. “I had my first child in 1997,” said Julie. “In 1998, my older brother, (Chris) contracted cancer… he lived for a year (before he passed away)… he was 40.” “He’d just found the love if his life when he got diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma,” explained Julie. “(He) loved the fact I’d just become a mum.” After the loss of her brother, Julie went on to have another three children. However, in 2007, her life was set to be rocked once again, as her best friend Julie Vugs, was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer. Her battle was short, but Julie maintains that her best friend kept a smile on her face until the very end. “That was the final one that got me into relaying,” said Julie. “I’d heard about (The Re-
lay for Life), and I said, hang on…I’ve been through cancer experiences, I’ve been a carer, and I thought; I want to do this, I want to make a difference.” Partnered with her four children, Tilly, Sheri, Darcy and Patrick, Julie followed through with her plan, beginning a team at the Berwick Relay for Life. “We stayed there for about five years,” said Julie. “Then in 2012, my friend’s father was diagnosed with skin cancer, so we changed from the Berwick relay to the Werribee one. We also continued to help out at the Berwick and Cranbourne (relays).” For Julie, her partner Gary, and her children, this will be the family's third Cardinia Relay for Life, having started up their own family team, Best Foot Forward. “(When we were naming ourselves), we wanted something quirky,” explained Julie, whose team now consists of around 22 family members, friends and work colleagues. “BFF (stands for) best friends forever, because my friend had died, and best foot forward just because it’s one foot in front of the other on the track.” The track that Julie and Best Foot Forward will be walking is based at Toomuc Reserve Pakenham, with the relay beginning at 5.45pm Friday 24 February, carrying through until noon the following day. The concept behind the relay is simple, with all teams having to have a team member either walking or running around the track with their team batten in hand. “I usually do at least 10 (hours of walking),” admitted
Julie. “I do the night shifts … so my husband, Gary and I are usually up between midnight and five in the morning and then someone else can come and relieve us.” “My first (relay) that I did, I walked 75 kilometres. That was for my best friend. I wanted to do 100 laps, but I didn’t get there. I was in first aid with a big blister.” Regardless of whether you are competing or not, Julie urges members of the community to come down to the reserve and observe the event. “There’s so much to look a,” said Julie. “(I encourage people to) come and have a look, especially when they do the flame ceremony… it’s the most emotional experience. It’s a nice feeling because you realise you’re not the only one who has lost someone or who knows that pain.” For those wanting to make a difference, whether they have been affected by the devastation of cancer or not, Julie maintains that the Relay for Life is a perfect way to start making a change in the world. “You can always say you want to make a difference, but unless you get out there and actually do something, you’re not really doing anything at all,” says Julie. “It’s such a good cause, and it really is an amazing event to see...it gives a lot of people hope.” The Cardinia Relay for Life will take place at Pakenham’s Toomuc Reserve on Friday 24 February. The annual Walk to Remember, hosted by the Jared Dunscombe Fund, is on again this February with everyone encouraged to participate and donate to the cause. The annual walk is held in memory of Jared Dunscombe, a Cranbourne Rotary Club member whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 31 in 2013. Mr Dunscombe was killed when he fell from his bike and was struck by a truck and trailer travelling in the same direction while taking part in the Rotary fund-raising event - Ride to Conference. The Walk to Remember encourages anyone who has lost someone close to them to take the time to walk the Lysterfield Park Hallam North Walking Tracks and remember those no longer with us. Through the Walk to Re-
member, the fund raises money to donate to a charity that Mr Dunscombe would have believed in. This year the fund is raising money to help Victorian-based assistance dog training group Righteous Pups to fund the construction of two new training facilities. Mr Dunscombe’s sister Jonelle Colabufalo said Righteous Pups was the kind of organisation her brother would have supported. “He was a dog lover and we always had dogs growing up; he even had his own little Jack Russell,” she said. “But it’s the helping young people that these dogs do; that’s the kind of organisation he supported.” The training facilities that the money will go towards include one for diabetes alert dogs and one for Righteous Pup’s
Bridging the Gaps program. The Bridging the Gaps Program is for children 11 to 18-year-olds who have been identified with significant educational or psychological risks and behavioural problems. “The youth come and work with the dog trainers and a counsellor for one day per week for 12 months and the results they are having from this program in turning around the lives of these young people is amazing,” Ms Colabufalo said. As well as the fund-raising walk, the pups from the program will be on hand to meet the walkers and there will be a number of children’s activities as well. Four sets of twins were born at St John of God Berwick Hospital within a two-week period this year. The maternity team has enjoyed the novelty of caring for these special babies. It has been a busy time as the team continues to prepare for the move to the new hospital at Kangan Drive, Berwick, later this year. Maternity services will expand with a larger Special Care Nursery, six birthing suites and additional rooms. The hospital runs tours of the Gibb Street Maternity Ward each Tuesday at 8pm and on Sundays at 2pm. Dancing their way to the top Five students from a Hallam dance school have recently kicked on to high honours. Miranda Shami, Tiana Magnussen, Alycia Siomos, Missy Krilic and Celine Tricarico, all current and former dancers at Independent Dance Studios, have joined prestigious dance institutions this year. Shami, of Cranbourne, has enrolled full-time in the Melbournebased elite performing arts academy Patrick Studios Australia. Magnussen, of Lynbrook, has joined the Victorian College of the Arts, and Siomos, of Pakenham, is enrolled with contemporary-dance studio Transit Dance. Tricarico, of Berwick, is with
Melbourne City Ballet and Fleming, of Kew, has joined the Conservatoire of Classical Ballet. IDS artistic director and principal Nicole Jacobsson paid credit to the dedication and discipline of the dancers, many of whom had trained at the Hallam studios since its inception in 2009. “They have spent hours and hours inside our beautiful studios perfecting their craft. “I am truly lucky to train such beautiful and determined young people. “We are extraordinarily proud of these gifted young dancers who have such bright futures ahead."

Grant that kept them afloat the computers then volunteers show the client how to work it, mostly email and skype,” team leader Trisha McGill said. “If there are any problems our techs or volunteers will go out and we will replace the computer.” “Also, if their disability gets worse we can offer different forms of computer equipment such as a bigger keyboard with large keys if their sight is failing.” Beyond Disability have more recently launched their Victorian Vets Wellness Project, aimed at getting war veterans online to stay connected with friends and family. “We started helping out veterans about three years ago and want to encourage more vets come on board the program,” Ms Stocks said. “We find a lot of veterans have PTSD and it helps them to be able to communicate with their mates who may be experiencing the same thing.” “They are the ones who benefit from our program and it really helps to keep in touch with mates.” Beyond Disability provide all their services to their clients for just $11 a week, or $23 a week with a wireless modem. The team is hoping they can attract more clients this year and expand their help to more people in the community who need it. By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey-based charity group Beyond Disability has put its 2016 Casey Cardinia Foundation Spring Grants money to good use assisting elderly and housebound people to stay connected. The group was awarded a $2500 grant from the foundation in December last year and has used the money to increase their client basis. The money supplied by the Casey Cardinia Foundation has mostly been spent on operational costs such as the purchase of laptops, broadband subsidies, and volunteer travel reimbursements. Beyond Disability Secretary Peggy Stocks said the grant money had helped keep their services alive. “It is very much appreciated and we wouldn’t survive without it,” she said. “These grants are how we survive as we get hardly any Federal Government funding so we rely on funding and what we get is very much appreciated.” Beyond Disability has been supplying laptops, desktop computers, and specialised equipment to elderly, disabled, and housebound people as well as their carers in the south-east for 19 years. What sets Beyond Disability apart from other similar charities is they provide ongoing support from volunteers to make sure their equipment works and users are comfortable operating it. “Our techs go out and set up

Gridiron teams are United By Russell Bennett Gridiron in Melbourne’s south-east is about to enter into a new era in 2017 with the Pakenham Silverbacks and Berwick Miners amalgamating to form ‘Casey Cardinia United’. The stunning move comes after about three weeks of discussions between the two clubs about the best way forward. The Miners have had their struggles in recent seasons but have 30 years of rich history in the sport, while the Silverbacks have won back-to-back Gridiron Victoria Division 2 titles in their short four-year existence. Both clubs believe the decision to join forces puts them in a position of strength, both now and into the future, and they also believe it provides the perfect opportunity to continue to grow the sport in the local area. Silverbacks secretary Ashlee Trimble will continue in the role as part of the new Casey Cardinia United committee, led by president Richie Howlett - the Silverbacks’ founder and former Miners player, alongside vice president and another former Miners player Damien Belsham, and treasurer Jye Healey.
“After examining all our options moving forward it didn’t take long for us all to be excited by this,” Trimble explained to the News. “It’s the logical progression for both clubs. “Together we’ll have the committee, the resources, the players, and the facilities and we also have the drive.” The News understands that the Miners would have otherwise struggled to survive long-term. The amalgamation provides them with the opportunity to continue to build on their history in the sport. The Miners have an established home base at Sydney Pargeter Reserve in Endeavour Hills, while the Silverbacks have battled to find a long-term home in Pakenham. It’s no secret that sections of the two clubs haven’t always seen eye-to-eye. A lot has transpired over the past two-and-a-half weeks, but the decision to join forces was a unanimous one at committee level. Trimble said the move would provide both clubs’ members with the best possible resources, facilities, and playing group and was met with “huge excitement”.

Pakenham’s current women’s side will continue to take to the field in 2017 as the Silverbacks. The amalgamation provides one goto club for anyone from Dandenong to Pakenham looking to get involved in the sport of gridiron. “It’s about promoting our sport so there’s no disconnect between a club in Casey and one in Cardinia,” Trimble said.
“There’s one message coming from one club. “This is about making gridiron a mainstream sport, not a minority one.” While there will be arrivals and departures in the playing group for 2017 - as there will be for every club Trimble said the CCU move will only strengthen the side made up of former Silverbacks and Miners players. Further specifics of the amalgamation are still being ironed out, with more announcements to follow over the coming days.

The popularity of basketball is exploding, particularly at the junior levels, and Pakenham is part of the growth corridor right at the heart of it all. The Pakenham Warriors have more than 25 sides across the junior and senior ranks that represent the local area at the state level and more than 5000 total members within the association. Cricket carnival is fun for everyone The 2017 Melbourne Stars All Abilities Cricket Carnival will be held at Casey Fields on Sunday 19 February. Bringing together cricketers with all abilities from across Victoria to play at the one venue, the carnival will feature Ten Over Tonk and Super League divisions.
