An Albury business has been hit with record penalties of $532,000 in a case involving the exploitation of five workers at a cafe. Two of the workers were Indian cooks who were coerced into paying back portions of their wages under threat of violence, dismissal and withdrawal of support for their visas if they refused. Fares Ghazale, the former owneroperator of the Canteen Cuisine cafe in Albury, has been penalised $88,810 and his company Rubee Enterprises Pty Ltd penalised a further $444,100 in the Federal Circuit Court. The total $532,910 in penalties is the largest achieved as a result of a Fair Work Ombudsman legal action. The previous record penalties of $408,348 were secured by the Fair Work Ombudsman against a Brisbane 7-Eleven store, in a case which also involved exploitation of overseas workers. Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the record penalties sent a clear message that there were serious consequences for deliberately exploiting overseas workers in Australia. “These record penalties are a big blow in the fight to stamp out deliberate exploitation of overseas workers in Australia,� Ms James said. “The minority of rogue employers in Australia intent on preying on the vulnerability of overseas workers should be warned that we will do everything in our power to pursue you and hold you to account. “Business models built around blatant exploitation of overseas workers are completely unacceptable. They create an uneven playing ground for the majority of business owners who do the right thing and tarnish the reputation of business in Australia,� Ms James said. Continued page 2

Cafe’s rude brew From front page The Federal Circuit Court found that Ghazale, who operated Canteen Cuisine cafe until it closed in 2014, was involved in multiple breaches of workplace laws in relation to the two Indian workers, including coercion, adverse action, underpayment of minimum lawful entitlements and providing false records. Three Australian employees were also underpaid their minimum entitlements. The workers, aged in their late twenties, were employed as cooks. The employees faced having to leave Australia within 28 days if Ghazale withdrew support for their visas. One of the workers had been sponsored by Ghazale’s company on a 457 skilled worker visa and he was in Australia with his Indian wife, who was dependent on his visa to stay in Australia. The second worker was on a bridging visa while his application for a 457 visa was pending. Ghazale promised the two workers annual salaries in excess of $50,000 for a 38-hour week when he recruited them. However, the workers were generally paid flat rates of $1000 and $830 respectively for working 60 hours per week, including nights and weekends, which was less than the minimum wage and penalty rates they were entitled to under Australia’s Restaurant Industry Award 2010. In addition to short-changing the workers, soon after commencing employment, Ghazale told the workers they would be allowed to keep only a fraction of their wages each week which would ultimately result in them being left with as little as $6 an hour. Ghazale coerced the workers into going to a local ATM to withdraw cash and repaying him large amounts of their wage by threatening to withdraw his support for their visas if they refused. The employee being sponsored on the approved 457 visa was required to repay Ghazale $11,050 over a period of several months in amounts ranging from $450 to $940 a week. When the employee complained to Ghazale about the cash-back scam, Ghazale threatened to “contact Immigration” if the employee refused to hand over the cash. The employee gave affidavit evidence that Ghazale told him: “If anything happens to my business, I will kill you. If you complain to anyone, I will kill you and cancel your visa”. Similarly, Ghazale coerced the second Indian employee into repaying him $10,680 in cash through weekly repayments ranging from $360 to as much as $2000 one week. When the employee complained to Ghazale that he was taking advantage of him, Ghazale responded by threatening to withdraw support for the employee’s pending 457 visa application.

The employee later told Ghazale he could no longer afford to pay money back, to which Ghazale responded by shouting at the employee and demanding he repay $500 cash each week if he wanted to get the visa. The employee gave affidavit evidence to the court that at one point during this exchange, Ghazale dragged him by the collar and attempted to punch him. The matter was reported to Albury police. After the incident, the cook continued working at the cafe and continued providing cash to Ghazale. The combination of the cashback scheme and underpayment of minimum entitlements resulted in the two employees being underpaid $32,063 and $28,858, respectively. Ghazale and his company also underpaid the minimum wages and entitlements of three Australian citizens employed at the cafe. A waitress was underpaid $11,273, a cook $8946 and an apprentice cook $6766. The Indian employees gave affidavit evidence that the underpayments left them struggling to meet their most basic expenses, including buying groceries. One of the employees gave evidence that he had to borrow a mattress from friends because he could not afford to buy furniture and that he lost significant amounts of weight due to stress. He could also not afford to buy clothes or go out socially. Ghazale and his company also contravened workplace laws by knowingly providing false time and wages records to Fair Work inspectors and failing to issue pay slips. The Fair Work Ombudsman’s investigation of the matter was initially sparked by a request for assistance from one of the Australian employees. In total, the two Indian and three Australian workers were underpaid $87,909. In addition to the penalties, the Federal Circuit Court has ordered Ghazale and his company to backpay the five workers in full. In the event that this order is not complied with due to insolvency, the court has ordered that part of the penalties imposed be paid to the workers to rectify the underpayments. In his judgment, Judge Tom Altobelli found that the treatment of the Indian employees was “grossly exploitative” and described the conduct as “highly aggravating and extremely serious” and “particularly saddening”. “(Ghazale) exploited his position of power to extract significant sums from each of the employees, and in effect, pay them wages as low as $6 an hour. It is also highly aggravating that (Ghazale) used violence, and threats of violence, to obtain the repayments,” Judge Altobelli said. Judge Altobelli found that the cashback scheme was part of a “deliberate strategy of deceit to hide the ongoing

contraventions of workplace laws” and that Ghazale had “deliberately exploited the imbalance of power between sponsor and visa holder in order to achieve financial gain”. Judge Altobelli said that “the disparity between the promised annual salary and the amounts in fact paid demonstrates the particular cruelty of the minimal payments” to the two Indian workers and found that there was no evidence of any contrition or remorse expressed by Ghazale or his company. Judge Altobelli found that the treatment of the Indian workers was “an affront to the minimum employment standards that all employees should be able to expect to receive in Australia” and that it was “important to send a message to employers of migrant workers in Australia that the failure to afford the Australian safety net of minimum entitlements to migrant workers will not be tolerated”. “The court should send a message to Australian employers that there is a single set of workplace protections in Australia that provide a safety net to all employees, regardless of their visa status,” he said. Judge Altobelli also found that there was a need for general deterrence in the hospitality industry, describing the hospitality industry as being “notorious for non-compliance”. Ms James says the record penalties imposed should also send a message that exploitative cashback arrangements will not be tolerated. “Any employer who tells an employee that they have to pay part of their wages back, or spend their wages in particular ways, is breaching work laws,” Ms James said. “I am concerned that cashback schemes are being utilised by unscrupulous operators in an attempt to get around record keeping laws and disguise serious underpayment of wages. “The current laws prohibit an employer ‘requiring’ an employee to spend any part of their wages, where the requirement is unreasonable. Employee co-operation or other independently verifiable material is necessary to prove this. We welcome the government’s commitment to strengthen the laws prohibiting ‘cash-back’ arrangements.” Ms James says workers who find themselves in this situation should document what is going on by making their own records and contact the Fair Work Ombudsman for free advice and assistance. “We welcome any information from workers and members of the public about exploitative cashback arrangements,” she said. Ms James says addressing exploitation of overseas workers in Australia has long been a priority for the Fair Work Ombudsman.

A keen eye for history Wodonga’s historic railway station and yards are not only turning heads locally - they have caught the eye of the judges of the 2017 Property Council of Australia/Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellent awards. The development at Junction Place, being developed by Places Victoria and key stakeholders include the City of Wodonga, Regional Development Victoria and Central Place (developer)will be among 27 Victorian finalists at this year’s national awards to be announced in May. The old railway station joins apartments and aquariums, retirement living villages and high-tech libraries, sustainable offices and the Old Melbourne Gaol in the finals, according to Victorian Property Council Executive Director Sally Capp. “Every year, Victoria’s world-class developments are on display, and the 27 nominations this year reflect the industry’s commitment to building places that enrich our cityscapes, communities and the lives of people,” Sally said. The Junction Place project has aimed to bring new life to the former historic railway station and yards in central Wodonga. The project doubles the size of Wodonga’s central business district and revitalises the city centre. Also among the finalists this year are Melbourne’s Sealife Aquarium, the Olympic Park Community Facility and RMIT’s Bundoora West Student Accommodation Project. Several Victorian heritage projects are in contention for awards, including RMIT’s Building 11 and The Junction Place in central Wodonga. “The $11 million refurbishment of the oldest building on the RMIT city campus - once part of the Old Melbourne Gaol that housed Ned Kelly

and the Eureka Stockade rebels - has preserved and enhanced an important piece of Victoria’s historical heritage, while The Junction Place has brought new life to Wodonga’s abandoned railway yards,” Ms Capp explains. VicTrack’s Community Use of Vacant Rail Buildings Program, which restored 15 disused rail buildings in regional areas and opened them up to the community, is also competing for the HILL PDA Award for Government Leadership.

“Other projects in contention include the trailblazing 171 Collins Street, which is one of the most sustainable offices in the country, and the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, which integrates the traditional with the high-tech to create spaces that support learning in the 21st century,” Ms Capp adds. All national development finalists are in the running for the industry’s most coveted prize - the Rider Levett Bucknall Australian Development of the Year award. All development proj-

ects named as finalists are also vying for the State Development of the Year award in their state. Rider Levett Bucknall Director Ewen McDonald says that the 141 finalists across 20 categories highlight the importance and influence of the awards. “We have proudly partnered with the Property Council of Australia to present these awards since 1982,” Mr McDonald says. “Over that time, the number of cat-

Gangsters in mix One of the classics of Australian cinema Kitty and the Bagman is the feature movie at the Chiltern Rutherglen Continuing Education movie night at the Chiltern Star Theatre. Medieval lets loose Riding a horse without holding on while firing an arrow might sound like something from a movie but at the weekend 24 riders were doing just that at Albury Showground. Under the watchful eye of Queensland-based world champion Katrina Kruse, a group of enthusiastic riders, lead by Michelle Herbert and Bronwyn Dugan, learned the ba-

sics of this growing sport. “We had 24 people over the two days,” Michelle, a medieval enthusiast explained. “It was very, very intensive. “It is a medieval sport - people use to hunt like this on horseback, back before the Crusades.” And there was plenty to learn,

as Michelle said - it’s not like being an archer on the ground - there are plenty of things to watch out while trying to shoot an arrow. It’s a sport which is growing in popularity around the world although Michelle said it seems slow to take off in NSW - though not if she and Bronwyn get there way. After two days of intensive work

with Katrina they are already hoping to run a second course - this time in June. “We are just waiting to lock in a date,” she said. The pair had to wait six months before Katrina was available for this first course such is her popularity and the growing interest in the sport in Australia and around the world.

The Murray River Warriors are looking for new players. Based at Haydon Park in West Albury, the club is a non-for-profit organisation that plays rugby league football and ladies’ league tag in the Murray Cup Rugby League in the Albury area. The men’s team has been one of the area’s most successful in the league and has been premiers for the past two seasons. Both the men and women’s teams are seeking players for the current season. They are also looking for players and supporters to help continue their success. Training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays with matches on Sundays. Wheel eyes, ears Albury cycling enthusiast Barry Smerdon will cruise through the picturesque Kiewa Valley to Kergunyah, and back over the Lake Hume dam wall to Albury later this month without seeing any of the beautiful scenery. Instead Barry, 71, who is vision impaired, will rely on friend and front rider, Geoff Dynan, to use words to paint the picture of their spectacular surrounds for him. The pair will take part in the Johnsons MME Lake Hume Cycle Challenge on Saturday 25 February. Barry is one of seven vision impaired riders signed up for the ride organised by the Rotary Club of Bellbridge Lake Hume. The proceeds of the event, which offers five rides throughout the region, will be shared between the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund and Border Trust. Jumping on the tandem bike for the 90km Kergunyah Kruise, Barry said he was inspired to take part in the challenge in support of the cancer centre and, in particular, the complementary programs to be offered at the Wellness Centre. “We’re looked after pretty well us blind people, so if we can help in anyway other people, like patients at the Wellness Centre, we’re just happy to do it,” he said. This will be the third year Barry has participated in the challenge, having previously completed the 100km Tallangatta Tour course which has been replaced for 2017 as a result of roadworks near the Bethanga Bridge. He expects the 90km Kergunyah Kruise to take him about 4.5 hours, travelling an average of 20km per hour. Barry said tandem bike riding was an ideal activity for blind and vision impaired people.

The Thurgoona-based team is set to join the Murray Cup Rugby league competition, joining teams from Albury, Wodonga, Corowa and Wangaratta. Club president Jarrod Maxwell said they were looking to field two teams and were looking for players. “We will be fielding a men’s rugby League side and are also looking to enter a ladies League Tag team,” he said. “The idea came about from a group of boys at the uni who had previously played sports for other clubs, but couldn’t commit to travelling and were looking for a more social team. “The Mud Dogs originally ran a few years ago, but never really got off the ground so we decided to get it running again and push for a social club to be started. “We play in the Murray Cup competition, which is a comp between Albury, Wodonga, Corowa and Wangaratta. “As this is our first year, it is hard to tell how we will go, but we are hoping to be competitive and work hard to make our impression on the competition.” Jarrod said the team had already garnered community support and was looking to be a mix of university and community members. “We have a few sponsors so far, with the Kinross Woolshed in Thurgoona being our major sponsor, and also Plus Fitness in Thurgoona being a big sponsor as well. “We are using Wodongas ground as our home ground, and just doing our training runs at one of the ovals in Thurgoona. “We are looking good for mens numbers. Impact of the grants Men’s sheds and dance programs are among those to previously benefit from the Wodonga Council’s Community Impact Grants, which are open again now. The council is urging community organisations and individuals to apply for round three of the grants, which are set to close on 22 February at 5pm. “Individuals can apply for a grant for less than $500 by telling the council about their idea. Just not fair The clearance of homeless people in central Melbourne is not the act of heartless bureaucracy or police force, rather it is a matter of public order and safety and answers the fallout of mental health policies that have closed institutions since the 1970s and handballed mental health problems to the community sector and volunteers. There are many people who are better cared for in institutions, but rather than reform those institutions such as Mayday Hills they have closed them and the members of the general public end up bearing the cost. It is unfair both on vulnerable people with mental health issues and unsuspecting and untrained members of the public to make public spaces into unmanned resources wards for people who would be better cared for in more secure, monitored environments. We see this in Central Albury and deal with the same problems locally but governments need to bite the bullet and deal practically with people that actually require an institutional environment which serves them as individuals and the community in which they are part of. My husband and I were sitting on our front porch a few days ago, when something very nice happened. A young lady came across the road towards us. She was smiling and also had a beautiful big bunch of flowers. She stopped in front of us and said: “I would like to give you both these flowers for being so nice to me a few years ago, when I was a little girl. I was going past here one day and you both said 'Hello' to me. I stopped and we had a little chat, you made me feel so happy. I have never forgotten how kind you were and you really made my day." Then she was gone. I was so surprised, I’m not sure how I responded, but I do hope I thanked her. I couldn’t believe someone could be so thoughtful, and how a few kind words could have such a lasting impression on a young girl. I do hopes she reads this and she will know how nice she made us feel, and really made our day. I sometimes think I must have dreamt it, until I see the lovely flowers. I hope we meet again. Woman of the Year Tumbarumba’s Catherine Gairn has been named the Local Woman of the Year for the electorate of Albury, as part of the 2017 NSW Women of the Year Awards. The announcement was made by Albury MP Greg Aplin, who described Mrs Gairn as “a most deserving winner”. “Cathy Gairn has been prominent in developing the economic and educational life of Tumbarumba,” Mr Aplin said. “As vineyard business owner and director of Courabyra Wines, she has crafted some of Australia’s best sparkling wines, taking the Tumbarumba wine industry to national and international prominence. “In 1998, she inaugurated the committee to establish Tumbafest and chaired the committee for six years as this became the major local tourism event. “Through her involvement in the chamber of commerce she founded - and helped fund-raise for - the first trek to Kokoda by students of Tumbarumba High School, a tradition which continues.” Mr Aplin said Cathy also instigated the Young Achiever Awards at Tumbarumba High School. “She has served on the executive of the Tumbarumba Vignerons Association since its commencement and is currently vice-president and has also been a member of the New South Wales Wine Industry Association since 2013. “This award reminds us of all the great things being done in our local area. “People like Mrs Gairn don’t do this work with a view to earning recognition and awards, but it is good to share their stories as an inspiration to all.” Mr Aplin said he was particularly pleased to be presenting the award at the Tumbatrek dinner in the company of many prominent members of the Tumbarumba and surrounding communities.

Symptom diary for ovarian cancer

Every woman needs to know the symptoms of ovarian cancer that is the message from Ovarian Cancer Australia. It can be difficult to diagnose ovarian cancer because the symptoms are ones that many women will have from time to time, and they are often symptoms of less serious and more common health problems. But contrary to popular belief, according to Ovarian Cancer Australia it is not a silent disease. Women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer report four types of symptoms most frequently: abdominal or pelvic pain; increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bloating; needing to urinate often or urgently and feeling full after eating a small amount. The group urge anyone who has had any of these symptoms (they are new for and have been experienced multiple times during a fourweek period) to go to a GP. To help track these symptoms, download the Symptom diary from the group’s website ovariancancer.net.au. The diary helps to monitor symptoms and then the completed diary can be taken to a doctor to assist with diagnosis. Other symptoms to be aware of:

Twelve hundred Australian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year, and in Australia alone a woman dies of Ovarian Cancer every 10 hours. For Heather Watts president of the Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group, it’s not all about statistics but real people in her case her daughter Kelsey Watts died of ovarian cancer at the age of 33. The Border Ovarian Awareness Group was formed in July 2012, and has raised $180,000 since it’s formation according to president Heather. The not-for-profit group holds various events, and will be out and about on Teal Ribbon Day - 22 February, selling ribbons. “The whole month of February is ovarian cancer awareness month,” Heather said. “But we will be out on Teal Ribbon Day selling ribbons at Coles in the street while a lot of other businesses also have posters up and are selling ribbons too.” Dedicated to raising awareness of this insidious cancer and in memory of those that have passed away from ovarian cancer, the group assists women to recognise the symptoms and supports those fighting the disease. They are committed to raising funds through donation and sponsorship collection to offer

community education and disease prevention of ovarian cancer. One of their most successful ventures is their second hand book and jams stall at the Wondonga Plant Farm - for gold coin donations people can buy books and jams. Amazingly, the store has raised $65,000 in the past four years. The group wholeheartedly support the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and Ovarian Cancer Australia, and is enthusiastically supported by local geneticist doctor Moulik. But it’s not all serious, with plenty of fun fund-raisers

planned to help keep the money coming in and to raise awareness of this disease. Earlier this month they were part of the second annual HOG motorcycle ride around the region and next month they have a even more interesting fund-raiser. The BOAG group is asking the people of the Border region to register and jump out of a plane.

The event will be held on Saturday and Sunday 5 and 6 March. Heather said last year’s inaugural event attracted 17 jumpers but already there were 44 on the books. The Symptom diary will also help to track any other symptoms that are not usual for the patient. These may include: Changes in your bowel habits; Unexplained weight gain or weight loss; Bleeding in-between periods or after menopause; Back pain; Indigestion or nausea; Excessive fatigue and Pain during intercourse. The group urge women to be aware; but not to make themselves sick with worry. It is important to remember that most women with these symptoms will not have ovarian cancer. A doctor should first rule out more common causes of these symptoms, but if there is no clear reason for the symptoms, the doctor needs to consider the possibility of ovarian cancer. If a patient isn’t comfortable with a doctor’s diagnosis or they are still concerned about unexplained persistent symptoms, they should seek a second opinion, according to the group. I receive vague looks when I make the statement that we had the ability in 1970 to provide the same and better audio performances to our so-called high-tech products of today. By the way of adding a simple box like an Apple TV, Chromecast or Sonos Connect they are as contemporary as any current product. We have seen people remove higher quality televisions and replace them with inferior models for the sake of not being smart, when it could have been purchased for less than $100. It is difficult and at times frustrating to explain the simple commonsense solutions when our second-string brands have the lion's share of what has become our education backbone, Google.

Local Sport Van der Ploeg takes it out By Paul Ingwersen Round two of the Albury Wodonga Panthers Cycling Club criterium series saw exciting racing with some hotly contested sprint finishes and fast laps in grades. With temperatures in the high 30s and a north-easterly breeze across the race track, it would take skill, experience, strength and some stamina to feature on the podium. The A Grade start list was bolstered by the return of Neil van der Ploeg following his recent racing in New Zealand. While back into some heavy training, everybody knew he would be one to watch with the potential to light up the race. A few riders on the start line were possibly thankful that Jess Featonby and Timmy Guy had opted for some rest after matching it with Tour de France winner Chris Froome in the Herald Sun Tour the week before, but this was short lived as lap after lap was raced at below 2:10 minute pace. A few laps in Peter Varley from the Alpine club attacked and found himself off the front of the bunch. Van der Ploeg and others chased at a consistent pace and he was back in the group a few laps later. Halfway into the race, Bended El-

bow rider Charly McMillan wound up his biggest gears like a spring in an old-fashioned alarm clock. He hit the front and the bells started ringing as he set a smashing speed over the next four laps. To use the old-style cycling descriptions, the riders behind were getting their doors blown off. Two weeks ago McMillan tried the same tactic and was left with six riders on his wheel. This week he showed no mercy and half way through that effort, it was just the professional, van der Ploeg in his black IsoWhery Sports top, McMillan, and fellow Bended Elbow Rider, Brad Rose. Showing experience and a hunger to completely wipe out the field, after four laps as McMillan ever so slightly eased the pace, van der Ploeg hit out, creating a gap, which was soon closed by Brad Rose. McMIllan showed he had saved just enough in the tank to follow the moves. Next it was Rose attacking, then McMillan having a crack, and for the final few laps the three training partners put friendship aside and constantly hit each other at every opportunity. While the race had been fast, it was an even match, and into the last lap the three riders were together, vying for the top position.

The A Grade podium Bad Rose, Neil van der Ploeg and Charly McMillan fight out the places. McMillan led them into the final 500m, with van der Ploeg coming around for a strong sprint to claim first, Brad Rose in second, and McMillan third. The remaining riders finished solo or in pairs, highlighting the demolition job on the peloton carried out by the podium riders. B Grade had some interest with the two young guns Tom Sharpe and Zach Owen mixing it with experienced masters riders. The race was constant and with three laps to go Justin King casually

rode off the front as he set a solid tempo and a rider left a gap. Soon he had 30m on the bunch and Paul Ingwersen bridged across. Perhaps tired or lacking experience, the bunch riders looked at each other and failed to follow, attack or sacrifice their chances by chasing. The pair held the same gap for the lap, swapping turns and the lead blowing out to over 200m with one and a half laps remaining. Osteohealth rider Tom Barry made a final attempt to bridge across and got within 40m with 500m to go, before

the leading duo again lifted the speed, with Justin King taking the win, and Tom Barry crossing in third. Junior Tom Sharpe rode well in his first B Grade outing finishing fifth and Carly McKay was the first woman. The C Grade finish was the tightest all night. After an aggressive race that saw Callum Dwyer off the front, and the evergreen Paul Burns leading the chase, the bunch reformed and on the bell lap it was Chris Little, Graham Tierney and Steve Young in a drag race to the line. Little took the longest route, up the outside, catching the cross wind, but was strong enough to win, ahead of Tierney and Young. In D Grade, Grant Pratt in his first race showed his potential, taking the win ahead of Ruth Little, Andy Falconer and Jodie Nicholls.

Drive to catch up Wodonga will be on the hunt for quick runs when its Cricket Albury Wodonga Provincial first grade match against Belvoir resumes at Les Cheesley Oval this weekend. Wodonga won the toss and sent Belvoir in with Aaron Gillespie scoring 48 and Glen Vassallo 40 to guide their team to 9/206 with Avery Weilandt taking 4/50 for Wodonga. A 30-minute shift from Archie Thompson wasn’t enough to break the deadlock for Murray United in the clash with Melbourne City on the weekend but had almost guaranteed the former Socceroo will start at LaTrobe on Saturday night. Twice the Border’s NPL outfit took the lead at the City Football Academy only to have the home side find a response and end the game 2-2. The former Melbourne Victory cult hero came on in the 57th minute against Victory’s A-League arch rivals but is expected to make his first run-on start this weekend at home against Eastern Lions. “The idea was to get some minutes under his belt and next week will be his first start for the club,” senior coach James Coutts said. “He’s a class act so we’ve got to make sure we get him on the ball as much as possible. “Archie showed those glimpses already in those small moments on Saturday and in our training sessions. “He’s obviously a quality player and will have a really positive impact on the club.” The latest visa signing US-raised Colombian Fernando Posada also took to the pitch for the first time in Murray United colours. Coutts said the signs were all positive. “We could have had four or five in the back of the net,” he said. “We created so many chances, which we didn’t do as much against Box Hill. “To play a side like Melbourne City, who will be thereabouts in their conference, and score two and should have scored more, is definitely pleasing. “And it was great to get 45 minutes into Fernando’s legs - I was really happy with his performance.” Former Adelaide A-League striker Chad Bujega put United in front after 24 minutes. City equalised almost straight after halftime before Zac Walker made it two for United just three minutes later. The home side again found the back of the net on 78 minutes to set up a dramatic but ultimately fruitless final 10 minutes.
