The carnival’s entertainment doesn’t stop there, with live bands and food trucks to taste the colours of the world. As the Gippsland Carnival enters its third stage, a couple of big names are standing out as potential winners of the inaugural carnival. Lara trained Chrichton Bale and top sprinter Aston Bolero are both on top of their respective leader boards. Chrichton Bale leads the Stayers Series and Aston Bolero is headlining the Sprinters. Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club (CGRC) will host the third leg of the Gippsland Carnival with a twilight meeting to be held on Saturday 11 February. The Gippsland Carnival is a new concept for Greyhound Racing Victoria which incorporates the Sale, Warragul, Cranbourne and Traralgon greyhound racing clubs. The carnival will link all four clubs country cups together culminating with a final at Traralgon on 25 March, where a Gippsland Champion Sprinter and a Gippsland Champion Stayer will be crowned. The carnival was launched in Seaspray at the end of last year with Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy announced as ambassador. CGRC Manager Amanda Cameron said she is excited for her club to help continue the momentum that has taken Gippsland by storm over the last two months. “We’re excited to host the third leg of the Gippsland Carnival here at CGRC with plenty on offer both on and off the track,” Ms Cameron said. “A strong field of dogs will contend for the Backman’s Greyhound Supplies Group 2 $67,000 Cranbourne Cup as we get closer to finding out who will be crowned the Gippsland Champion Sprinter and Gippsland Champion Stayer. “I would encourage all members

Training for the top By Gerard Guthrie Former Test cricketer Darren Pattinson has been training greyhounds for a relatively short time, but it didn’t take him long to establish himself as one of the most successful trainers in the Cranbourne region. Pattinson, who played one Test match for England, the country of his birth, in 2008, wasted no time making his mark after swapping the whites for the collar and lead in mid-2013, and it’s been largely through the deeds of Blazin’ Bomber, the star of his boutique Pearcedale kennel. “I love greyhound racing. It’s been excellent but it takes up a lot of time!” said Pattinson, 37, who is the older brother of Aussie paceman James Pattinson. “I didn’t really have any expectations when I started training greyhounds but anything I do I want to do as good as I can so you dream big and it’s been great to have a good dog like Blazin’ Bomber come along pretty quickly.” Boasting the fantastic strike rate of 25 wins from 52 starts and $218,000 in prizemoney, Blazin’ Bomber contested his 14th Group event on 28 January when sixth in the Warragul Cup, the second leg of greyhound racing’s $800,000 Gippsland Carnival. Blazin’ Bomber ran an unlucky fourth in a heat of the Cranbourne Cup last weekend, thus missing out on a place in this Saturday night’s $67,000 final, but Pattinson is delighted to be training one of the most talented greyhounds in Australia. “He beat (Melbourne Cup winner) Ando’s Mac in a Warragul Cup heat last month which shows what he is capable of,” he said. Blazin’ Bomber is a two-time winner at Group 3 level, however Group 1 glory has thus far proven elusive despite five appearances on racing’s greatest stage, although Pattinson remains optimistic his day in the sun will come. “I think he probably deserves to win a Group 1

but you don’t have a right to win one. You’ve got to go out and do it and so far he hasn’t been able to,” Pattinson said. “There’s a few Group 1s coming up at The Meadows. He’s got invitations for the Temlee and the Rookie Rebel, which are run on the same night (18 February) but we’re looking more at the 600m race (Rookie Rebel) and then there’s the Australian Cup (4 March). I’m not sure how long he’ll go on after that because there’s a lot of demand for him at stud.” While most of Pattinson’s energies are these days devoted to his greyhound duties, he admits
cricket is still very much in his blood. “I still play the odd game and have a bit to do with Dandenong in the Premier League,” Pattinson said. “I’d still play if I wasn’t so busy with the dogs. I do miss cricket but more the social side of things rather than playing the game. “Playing a Test for England was a bit strange. It sort of happened so fast because I’d only just gone over playing County cricket and it was a bit of a shock to get picked. I took a couple of wickets but we got flogged by South Africa.”
Dogs an integral part of community The Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club (CGRC) has been part of the local community since its formation in the early 1970s. The CGRC held its first meeting in 1974 and today the club hosts about 60 meetings annually, involving more than 6000 greyhounds, competing over 311m, 520m and 699m. Almost 10,000 people attended race meetings at Cranbourne last year. The CGRC directly employs 16 staff and supports local businesses and suppliers across the region through the provision of goods and services to the club. The CGRC, along with sister clubs Traralgon, Sale, and Warragul, contribute more than $40 million to the regional economy each year, providing hundreds of local jobs. The club boasts a large grandstand which has two floors - the bottom level holds more than 500 people and the top floor 450, with superb views of the track. The grandstand underwent a $3.2 million refurbishment and was completed in October, 2014. The CGRC’s biggest meetings are the Cranbourne Cup ($47,000) in February and the Cranbourne Classic ($25,000) in August. The local community regularly uses the club’s facilities with CGRC hosting up to 150 private events each year. The club is involved in many local community events and sponsors local football and netball competitions. The club is located on a 450-acre site with large harness and thoroughbred racing stables which house 650 horses. CGRC is the only club in Australia that has the three codes working at one track - Thoroughbred, Harness and Greyhounds. And the three codes unite at Cranbourne annually for a night of racing, known as TRI Codes Night in November.

Ashlee’s get up and go By Bridget Scott For Ashlee Terry, her passion and love of greyhounds gives her a great reason to get out of bed each day. “They help me get up every morning,” the 25-year-old said. Having been faced with her own mental health issues over the past few years, Ashlee said the greyhounds have helped her along the way. The Cranbourne local has managed to channel all of her energy into a rewarding career which she said has its ups and downs, but overall it’s something she absolutely loves. Passionate about rehoming all her greyhounds, Ashlee was mentored by Karen Leek who has been involved in the industry since she was 13 years old. Living in Warrandyte with her family who owned a general store, Karen became friends with a young vet nurse trained by Jim Gannon, a Greyhound Racing Victoria Hall of Fame inductee. Her friend Ange had a greyhound and asked Karen if she would like to meet him. “I thought ‘oh, I don’t know about this’,” Karen said. “She took me down to see this greyhound and when she opened the door this dog comes flying out and lands on me, feet on my shoulders and licking my face. “His name was Field King.” This was the beginning of Karen’s future.
“We travelled the countryside with all these dogs. I was still in school at the time and I would just sleep in the back of the car,” she said. The year Karen turned 18 she went to New South Wales for 12 months, and would only return home on the condition that she could have a greyhound. “My parents said ‘that’s fine, you can have a dog just come home’,” she said. From this point it just continued to grow for Karen as she dabbled in most aspects of the greyhounds including, training, breeding and these days, rearing. The Devon Meadows resident said a highlight during her career was winning the Shepparton Cup as well as a race named in honour of her late friend Judy Hayley, at Sandown Park. “Judy was a good friend of mine so it was very special to win that one,” Karen said. Unlike Karen, Ashlee said she was born into the greyhounds with both her parents heavily involved, but when her father passed away things changed. “When dad passed away mum had to let the dogs go, there just wasn’t enough time looking after me on her own,” Ashlee said. “But I would watch videos and I always knew I wanted a dog.” Eventually Ashlee got back into the greyhounds when her and her mother got jobs at the Healesville Greyhound
Greyhounds help Ashlee Terry get out of bed each morning. Racing Club. Around the same time, Ashlee started to work at another trainer’s property where she ended up looking after a sick puppy that she nursed back to health. “This was the first dog that went into my name as a trainer,” Ashlee said.
Not long after, Karen approached Ashlee to work for her where she does “a little bit of everything”. For Ashlee, it was harder to pinpoint an exact highlight in her career to date, for her the most important thing is “getting the best out of each dog”. That said, of all her dogs Ashlee
does have one champion on her hands in American Monster which has won 21 of his 45 starts, with a combined total of 32 placings. “The greyhounds are always in the back of your mind, they keep you going,” Ashlee said.
Debbie sheds a tear for her babies By Bridget Scott

Debbie Payne said her addiction to fostering greyhounds is ‘probably purely selfish’ but 96 greyhounds later, selfish couldn’t be further from the truth. Around 13 years ago, Debbie and her husband Mike were going to purchase an Irish wolf hound and the breeder told them he or she would need a mate. With this, the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) volunteers adopted their first greyhound Barney while they waited for the pup to be born, only to go down a different path altogether. “We fell in love with Barney and cancelled the proposed purchase of the wolf hound,” Debbie said. “Since then we have been fostering for around 13 years.” Debbie said they’ve ‘failed to give four greyhounds back’ because they
decided to keep them as their own. “All 96 of them are my babies, even though I don’t own them,” she said. At one point, Debbie said she had to make sure she picked up another greyhound on the same day she returned her current foster dog to ease the pain of having to give them back. “I’d foster one for three weeks and I’d pick another one up as I dropped them back,” she said. It would appear it doesn’t get any easier to let them go, as Debbie admitted she even shed a few tears when she took her latest greyhound back a few weeks ago. The greyhounds also forced her husband Mike to do a backflip. “He wasn’t a dog person until we started with the greyhounds, now he’s a big softie,” she said. Debbie said she decided to foster to help greyhounds find their second home.
“I felt that I really wanted to do something to get those dogs out there, and make people aware of them,” she said. “I get so much out of it, it’s probably purely selfish because it’s so wonderful for me to see them grow.” Debbie encouraged anyone who has considered fostering to give it a go. “They’re the easiest dogs to own and just the best pet. They’re great for anybody no matter what.” “You could get a greyhound for kids or for people with a disability, they’re so gentle.” Debbie said she believed that greyhounds had come a long way and added that people now cross the road to come and give them a pat and see what they’re like. “They’re a wonderful breed and thoroughly enjoyable,” she said. “They’re so adaptable, I feel like that’s the best way to describe them.”

Thompson floods field By Molly Haines Champion greyhound trainer and Pearcedale local Jason Thompson has won close to every group race Australia has to offer during his 25 years in the sport. On Saturday night at his local track of Cranbourne, Thompson hopes his support for the Gippsland Carnival will pay off since he has qualified three greyhounds through to the Group 2 Backman’s Greyhound Supplies Cranbourne Cup. Thompson has been heavily represented in each leg of the Gippsland Carnival, with runners in all three of the Country Cups. But he believes Big Flood is his best chance for a win in the third leg of the Gippsland Carnival. “Big Flood is the pick of the three I have in the Cranbourne Cup but he is a very young dog and this will be his first big test with quality open class greyhounds,” Thompson said. “He won’t want to do anything wrong even though he is carrying great form into the race.” Big Flood is a winner of nine races from 10 starts amassing more than $47,000 in prize money - forcing the TAB to open him up as $1.75 favourite.
“His early speed is very impressive and I would expect Big Flood from box three to be leading the Cranbourne Cup, with Don’t Kid Me not too far off him.” Sleek Master has drawn box one in the $67,000 Cranbourne Cup and has Thompson hoping he uses the inside box in his sixth group race in his 58-start career. Extreme Magic is another rising talent from the Thompson kennel jumping from box five, the Cranbourne Cup will be his first group race from just 14 starts. The Cranbourne Cup isn’t the only race Thompson is excited about on Saturday night. The $14,500 Victoria Cup, run over the 699-metre distance, is headlined by one of Victoria’s and Thompson’s most exciting stayers - Burn One Down. Burn One Down is a winner of 20 races from 35 starts earning more than $215,000. Last start, the 37-kilo chaser won the opening heat of the Victoria Cup in a best of the night time of 41.07 seconds. “In terms of a dog that can run from 400 metres to 700 metres, he is the fastest dog I have trained. I have never had a dog that can do what he does,” Thompson said.

The Thompson kennel isn’t the only local representative in the Cranbourne Cup.

Dundee Osprey is a winner of multiple group one races alongside his owner, trainer, and breeder Geoffrey Scott-Smith. Dundee Osprey is jumping from box four in Saturday night’s Cranbourne Cup.

John Foy basked in a “miracle“ win after Casey Council abandoned its compulsory acquisition of his Narre Warren North property at a meeting on Tuesday 7 February. Mr Foy invoked the classic Australian film The Castle as Casey councillors unanimously dropped plans to turn his wetland, gardens and home into soccer fields. HOSPITALS in Casey have performed well despite the enormous number of patients presenting to emergency rooms over the summer. Figures released by the State Government show almost half a million people found themselves in emergency rooms at hospitals in Victoria this summer which equates to a 24 per cent increase over the past six years. Locally, Casey Hospital in Berwick and Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre had an overall increase in patents but met key performance benchmarks despite the influx. According to the Casey Hospital’s emergency department, between October and December last year, 16,482 patients presented to emergency, a 5 per cent increase on the same time in 2015. Director of Emergency Medicine for Monash Health Dr Neil Goldie said the large number of births in the growing region contributed to the increase in patent numbers. “The south-east of Melbourne is one of Australia’s fastest growing regions and is experiencing an unprecedented baby boom,” he said. “To meet the increasing demands of our growing community, the $134.9 million Casey Hospital Expansion Project will deliver additional beds across a range of clinical areas including maternity, intensive care and surgical wards.” “Construction is expected to start this year, with an expected completion in 2019. Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre, while not an emergency hospital, also experienced an increase in patents but delivered services in line with expected rates.
The centre reduced the number of patients on the elective surgery waiting list from 906 at the end of the December 2015 quarter to 719 at the end of this December. The hospital treated 97 per cent of its 203 category two urgent elective surgery patients in the December quarter. It also treated 50 per cent of the hospital’s category one elective surgery patients within seven days, well under the 30-day targeted benchmark. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said the Government’s investments in local hospitals will see their performances improve further in the coming years. “Our record investment in health means more patients in Cranbourne will get the care, treatment and surgery they need sooner,” Mr Perera said. “With more paramedics on the road, ambulances will be able to respond to life threatening emergencies in Casey even more quickly.” Ambulance response times in Casey have stayed steady with the average wait time for code one emergencies of 12.21 minutes in the last quarter of 2015 compared to 12.16 minutes in the second quarter of 2016. Shadow Minister for Health Mary Wooldridge said the ambulance response times in Casey show that Premier Daniel Andrews has not kept his election promise to improve ambulance response times. “Daniel Andrews was happy to talk big before the election but clearly is failing to deliver and Victorians are losing out,” she said. “The Andrews Government is failing to deliver the improved ambulance service Casey families expect and deserve.”

Responding to 13 resident questions on the issue, a council officer steadfastly insisted Mr Foy’s land was the best site. The council will write to Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan seeking State Government help in exploring alternative sites for the soccer complex. Mr Foy had previously suggested the tracts of unoccupied Crown and council-owned land abutting his property, most of which was used for horse agistment. After celebrating with supporters after the meeting, Mr Foy said the
jangled nerves in his tummy in recent weeks had at last subsided. He said he was staying put for the time being, subject to his health, and was starting to get a taste for the limelight. “I might be able to audition for a few things, like Home and Away,” he laughed. “I’m just happy after the council didn’t want to listen to me about the dogs and the removal of trees. “It was just ridiculous what they were going to do. “Commonsense has now prevailed.”

Mr Foy’s land was also identified as the “last piece of the puzzle” for a trail link between Frog Hollow Reserve and Lysterfield Lake, Cr Aziz said. The surprise unanimous move came after Cr Aziz resolutely backed council’s intentions in a Facebook post the day before. In public question time early in the meeting, there had been little indication of the council’s capitulation.

John Foy’s home remains his castle after Casey Council sensationally dropped plans to compulsorily acquire his Narre Warren North property. Supporters cheered from the council’s public gallery on Tuesday 7 February as mayor Sam Aziz announced the council would “forever” abandon plans to convert the 78-year-old widower’s house, gardens and habitat wetland into soccer fields. In a nod to the stress caused to Mr Foy, Casey Council will pay for a replacement hot water system at his 34-acre home at 191-195 BelgraveHallam Road. A stunned Mr Foy had been reluctant to replace the recently-broken system, given his possible expulsion in the near future. He credited the outcome to a 9000plus signature online petition and viral social media in recent days fuelled by a TV news report on 5 February. “I think all the electronic devices got to them,” said Mr Foy - who doesn’t have a Facebook account himself. “I’d just like to thank everybody,” he said as his supporters hugged and kissed him. “It’s starting to get to me,” he added, grasping a DVD of the Australian classic film The Castle. As Cr Aziz shook his hand, Mr Foy said it had been a “bit of a battle” since Casey first inquired about his land in 2002. During that time, he’d knocked back a council offer of $1.45 million for his land, insisting on protection of his pet dog cemetery and “all the little critters” inhabiting the wildlife lake and gardens he created over the past 35 years. “Hopefully the nightmare goes away tonight,” Cr Aziz told Mr Foy. Peterine Smulders, a neighbour of Mr Foy, held a rolled-up protest banner and tearfully declared it was a “miracle”. Another neighbour Marlene Kane - who fought the David-and-Goliath contest for several months - said: “I didn’t think it was going to happen.” Mr Foy’s daughter Cindy said her father would be greatly relieved. “It’s been a bit of a toll on the whole family. “He will be giving a big sigh.” Cr Aziz told the meeting that councillors had to “act with compassion” but insisted he did not bow to political pressure or the “insulting remarks” on Facebook. Cr Aziz declared it would be a “cold day in hell under my mayoralty” before the council overrode the needs of Mr Foy and his “sentimental” attachment to his property. “If you were my father or grandfa-

A long-overdue accolade has been bestowed on Narre Warren South country music legend Gary Ellis. The 80-year-old singer-guitarist imprinted Tamworth’s cement pavement on 28 January after being inducted in the Australian Country Music Hands of Fame Cornerstone. He said it was the greatest day of his long, colourful life. “I’m basking in the honour,” he said. His handprints joined the likes of Slim Dusty, James Blundell, Chad Morgan, Jimmy Little, Troy CasserDaley, Kasey Chambers and scores of other notables. Many peers said the induction was too long in coming for Ellis whose prolific career spanned 65 years. There are a few things he insists on - recording with his own voice in good diction, with live musicians, and retaining an Australian country music sound. “The important part of country music is it’s a story. Your diction has to be very good so people can understand you. “These days the percussion is so loud you can’t hear the story!” Growing up in Glen Iris, his early love of horses led him to a life-long love for country music - which often hit themes of dogs and horses. Ellis first got a taste for the big time performing songs and circus tricks as a kid with his friends in his backyard. Proceeds went to a blind baby charity, after taking out a cut to buy some biscuits and soft drinks. He built his name and made a lot of money by regularly winning talent quests on radio, performing in dance
halls and sideshows, then travelling and performing around Australia. He learnt stagecraft from old showmen - who were hard and had learnt by trial and error how to control an audience of all sorts of people. “It’s a huge study that no school can teach you.” He said there were ways to tell when an audience was “into” the show. It was always best to leave a crowd hungry for more. His career hit soaring highs, with him being a regular on Channel 7 during TV’s debut in Australia in 1956. He was on TV twice in its first week on air, landed his first recording contract when they were “as rare as hen’s teeth” and was a regular on radio 3DB’s Hillbilly Hour. At the time, many country and western performers crossed over into the burgeoning rock-‘n’-roll trend. “Our heart was in country but rock and roll was closely related. “We were able to swing over with our guitars.” Ellis also plunged into deep lows when he succumbed to late nights and alcoholism in the 1960s and ’70s. Thus he lost his marriage and his vast TV, radio and stage audiences. “I was still singing around the place but I wasn’t wanted.” But Ellis sobered up and rebuilt his career 16 years ago. In that time, at an age where most are retired, he has recorded up to 10 albums of tracks that still top country radio charts across the world. He’s still recording, though he can’t play guitar like how he used to, and hasn’t had a drink since 1973. “I’m still bright as a button,” he said.

Senior citizens from the Lifestyle Village at Casey Fields in Cranbourne have been building and selling toys in their woodworking group to raise money for the Monash Hospital children’s cancer centre. Members of the group raised $1000 through their project, which was matched dollar for dollar by the Lifestyle Corporation and donated to the centre. The group of four men from the village sold the toys they made at craft markets to raise to money to donate to the children’s cancer centre. The lifestyle woodworking
group delivered the donation to the centre on Friday 3 February, where they were given a tour of the centre. In a newsletter distributed to residents of the village, Keven Sparrow said the experience of donating to the centre was a great way to top off the group’s hard work. “It was good to see the result of the hard work and efforts the guys put in through 2016, great work gents,” he said. “The social committee should also be thanked for helping us purchase the saw we needed, without it we would have struggled to achieve what we have done so far.”

Shaky ground I suppose people will prefer to know some idea where the Selwyn Fault runs. The geological maps I have, show it running more or less along the Frankston-Dandenong Road, for a bit. Interested professors of geology and engineering, do seem to agree that earthquakes are unpredictable. They say things like “mountain building" from earth movements is continuing in Australia. I am disinclined to compare apples with gumnuts - Japan is known to have a lot of quakes. New Zealand has a large fault running in the middle, called the Alpine Fault, it runs between two tectonic plates. One map I have shared is from the Department of Mines, a while back. It’s my understanding, if located there, and I have three geological maps that say so, the effects of a quake could be experienced, well across the City of Casey. It is true councillors have a mobile phone to contact residents and get information regarding the community and to inform us of meetings. Bump me into parliament The City of Casey seems unable to stand on its own feet without using its councillors as a footstool to be endorsed for political parties. Councillors Amanda Stapledon and Geoff Ablett are aligned to the Liberals, adding also the Mayor Sam Aziz. It is ridiculous that these councillors want their cake and eat it.They must be stood down and removed from office for this erroneous way of staying in office, paid high salaries and at the same time standing for state elections. The Minister for Local Government must change the law that before being sworn in as councillors, an oath/declaration must be taken by the relevant elected councillor that they will not be affiliated to any political party. I think residents need to make themselves available and get to that meeting to hear the justifications for this complete and unwarranted vandalism of our estate. On Friday 11 November I received an email from Keri New of the planning department saying the roundabout is not able to be moved and at a meeting with other residents and Cr Aziz, on Monday 14 November, Keri New stated that many Casey departments had been involved in the process including transport, recreation, planning and engineering, yet Keri New also stated: “No objection had ever been raised by council to challenge the new proposed location." Its seems this decision was made a long, long time ago and I have become the personal scapegoat. tify the commission if they intend to apply for a rate cap variation above two per cent. To date, Casey Council is the only metropolitan council to notify the Essential Services Commission of its intention to apply for a rate cap variation this year. Only five other councils have advised the ESC of any plans to apply for a rate cap variation. They are all rural councils. The minister’s two per cent rate cap for 2017-'18 is very generous.The annual rate of inflation is only 1.5 per cent. This means that prices have fallen markedly over the last year and that inflationary pressures are weak. There is no evidence that inflation is likely to increase over 1.5 per cent in the next year. One of the factors that has kept inflation low has been record low growth rates in wages and incomes. Residents in the south-eastern suburbs have been hit hard by government austerity cuts and well above average unemployment and underemployment rates. Casey council has no case for a rate cap variation above two per cent. Mayor Sam Aziz has advised Casey plans to spend money on a council junket to China this year. Casey has kept secret how much it paid a consultancy firm to conduct a “sham" survey for a “People's Planning Committee" in Casey. Casey’s 2016-'17 rate cap application to the commission saw $250,000 spent on a failed cap variation application. Other councils paid no more than $40,000 for the same service. Citizens stand up against crime By Victoria Stone-Meadows City of Casey Councillor Amanda Stapledon will be hosting a law and order forum as a private citizen, separate from her role as councillor, later this month. The forum will bring together local residents and members of State Parliament to discuss alternative ways of approaching and dealing with crime and crime prevention in the community. MLCs Gordon Rich-Phillips, Georgie Crozier and Edward O’Donohue are the guest speakers at the forum. Cr Stapledon said she decided to run the forum as a citizen separate from council as an effort to avoid politicising the issue of crime in Cranbourne. “I decided to do it this way because the people of Cranbourne are saying to me how they are not feeling safe in the community or in their homes,” she said. “It is important not to politicise it but listen to people who may have a solution to address crime prevention, family violence, policing, sentencing, and help to rehabilitate offenders.” She hopes that through discussion and the sharing of alternative solutions at the forum the politicians will have a better idea of what the community is facing and their needs. “It is about offering an alternative and hearing from the community and getting feedback to get the policy right for these three members of parliament in the future.” Cr Stapledon also hopes that through leading forums and discussions such as this there will be a greater focus on crime prevention programs at a grassroots level. “We in Cranbourne know we have the highest rates of family violence and that drugs and alcohol are a huge contributor to that,” she said. “We have a liquor outlet on every

A grandmother on holiday from China went on a stealing spree of hundreds of handbags, shoes, vitamins, cosmetics and jocks, a court was told on 6 February. She and her daughter Qiuyu Zhang, 40, of Lynbrook, had been arrested at Fountain Gate shopping centre on 7 July after stealing $620 of clocks, men's underpants, ladies shoes and clothing and a handbag from Big W. At Zhang’s home - where the grandmother had stayed since May - police seized a vast array of suspected stolen goods, including 284 items of vitamins, perfumes, cosmetics, medicines, ointments and sunscreen. Other seized goods included two bags of costume jewellery, eight pairs of ladies shoes, 34 pairs of slippers and 39 handbags in the grandmother’s bedroom. The items were brand-new, apparently unused, often in their original packaging and few accounted for by receipts, according to a police summary. They were stored in a variety of bags, suitcases and wardrobes. The court wasn’t given an estimated value of the stolen goods. The grandmother had been staying at Zhang’s home since May, and has since returned to China. After finding an international freight receipt, police believed the grandmother and her daughter may have already shipped stolen cosmetics and clothing to China. In a police interview, Zhang blamed
her mother for stealing much of the loot, but admitted she was fully aware the goods were stolen. At Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Zhang faced charges of shoplifting and dealing with proceeds of crime and suspected stolen property. Defence barrister Richard Lawson described Zhang and her husband as hard-working migrants, with three children and a significant mortgage. “It reached a point when (Zhang) knew her mum was shoplifting and did nothing about it - and made a bad situation worse.” Mr Lawson said he didn’t think the grandmother would return to Australia after coming to attention of immigration authorities. He conceded the court would be “generous” if it didn’t convict Zhang. Magistrate Barry Schultz said there had been “serious and protracted theft” but took into account Zhang’s “difficult personal, moral situation”. Mr Schultz said Zhang nevertheless should have tried to stop the thefts continuing. He imposed no conviction “with some reluctance” but said - despite police beliefs - there was no evidence some of the stolen goods were being sent to China for profit. Mr Schultz took into account Zhang’s early guilty plea, admissions, no prior convictions and the return of up to 90 per cent of the property. Zhang was fined $1500, and the unrecovered property was variously forfeited to the State Government or destroyed.

Ironman medal ‘irreplaceable’ By Victoria Stone-Meadows A yoga instructor who works in Lynbrook is appealing to thieves who stole his Ironman medal during a break-in to return his priceless prize. Darren Crompton arrived at the yoga studio, on Raylee Place in Lynbrook, on the morning of Monday 23 January to find the front of the studio had been smashed. “When I pulled up I could see the door smashed - we had been broken into once before in April so I knew what had happened,” he said. “The glass front door had been smashed in to get access to the lock from the inside,” he said. “There was some clothing in the ground they had dropped on their way out and they had made quite a mess and ransacked the reception area.” “I had a look around to see what was missing; a TV had been taken off the wall and another one from upstairs, the usual things robbers steal.” “I noticed that they went through the draws and had found the Ironman medal.” Mr Crompton won the distinctive medal in 1999 when he competed in the gruelling Ironman competition in Hawaii. He said he was upset to find the thieves had taken his medal as to him it is irreplaceable. “Other things from in the studio are replaceable but the medal is not worth anything to anyone else,” Mr Crompton said. “I worked very long and hard for it; I spent nine years just in the training, all I have is that memento and the memories.” Mr Crompton thanked the police for their quick response to the break-in and their efforts in trying to get his medal back but is hoping someone in the community will come forward who knows about it. “I don’t care who has taken it, I just want the medal back, I can replace the tools that were taken but I can’t replace the medal.” Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the medal are urged to contact Casey CIU on 5991 0600 or make and anonymous report to crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the prevention unit’s task was to enforce penalties for littering and illegal dumping. “This will improve council’s ability to investigate and take enforcement action against those who choose to do the wrong thing. “We want to send a clear message to the community that illegal dumping has consequences and will not be tolerated in Casey.” The unit’s other tasks included preventing litter through education. At a meeting on 7 February, the council also voted for changes to its hard-rubbish waste contract to allow collectors to also pick up illegally dumped rubbish. Councillor Wayne Smith warned would-be dumpers that council staff would comb through their rubbish to identify the perpetrators. Many times, officers had
found envelopes with the dumper’s name and address. Cr Smith said the contractual change would not come at extra cost, and would lead to a rapid removal of reported dumped items. It built on innovations over the past decade that helped tidy Casey’s streets such as coin-slot technology reducing dumped shopping trolleys and rapid tagremoval deterring graffiti vandals, he said. A council report presented on 7 February showed a vast majority of survey respondents (83 per cent) reported Casey investigating dumped rubbish. With the changes, Casey council has halved its service benchmark for dumped waste removal. The commitment is now within five days - with an expected average of three, Cr Aziz said. “Council operates a range of waste services, and all Casey households are entitled to two hard waste collections per year, so there’s no excuse for dumping your waste and litter for someone else to have to clean up.”

Drug deal web of deceit By Cam Lucadou-Wells An accused drug trafficker allegedly selling meth on Craig’s List using a “sophisticated” app to cover his tracks has been refused bail in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Craig Thiedeman of Keysborough allegedly admitted to selling under the user-name New Clouds R Us on the “clandestine” app Wickr, police informant Detective Senior Constable Anders Ayoub told the court on 6 February. For 12 months Thiedeman had used the app to post advertisements on Craig’s List selling quantities of meth for up to $450 for 1.7 grams, the court heard. “It’s a highly encryptted app and
there’s no trace that can crack it,” Det Sen Const Ayoub said. “There could be multiple transactions for trafficking or it could be few.” The applicant had allegedly told police he’d sold the drug for his own habit and to pay for personal expenses such as petrol. On 22 December he made the admissions after police intercepted him in a car with two grams of crystal methamphetamine in Keysborough. Before a subsequent search of his house, police discreetly waited for party-goers, including a child, to leave. They then seized two bags of suspected ice, a bottle of suspected GHB and a navy-blue hat - some of which have been claimed to be in Thiedeman’s partner’s possession.

Thiedeman said he couldn’t recall a police pursuit in Brighton in 2015, in which his fingerprint was detected on the vehicle when it was later recovered.
He faced charges of drug-driving on methamphetamine, driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving a vehicle with false number plates in Lynbrook in June. In Berwick in July, he was charged with drug-driving on meth and driving unlicensed. His lawyer argued that Thiedeman - who until six months ago lived in Berwick - had suitable accommodation, offered a $3000 surety and strong family support. At the time Thiedeman was on bail and serving two community corrections orders with judicial monitoring. He had breached such drug-therapeutic orders twice and CREDIT bail in the past two years. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted
the applicant had “his hand held every step of the way” in that time but still allegedly operated a trafficking business for 12 months. “(He’s) been doing it ... surreptitiously - that it’s difficult for police to obtain evidence. It’s ongoing while he’s before the court twice.” Facing re-sentencing for the two corrections orders, Theideman was “looking at a term of imprisonment that can’t be called insignificant”, the magistrate said. “You’re trafficking at a level that has a huge impact on the community not only... to maintain your own (drug) use but to maintain a certain lifestyle.” Theideman will next appear for a screening at Dandenong Drugs Court on 16 March.

A young man from Bayswater has been arrested following a Berwick multi-car smash and police search on Monday 6 February. Emergency services were called to Clyde Road, between Greaves and Centre roads in Berwick, shortly before 3pm. Police believe a stolen white Nissan Skyline was travelling south on Clyde Road when it allegedly ran a red light and hit a black Toyota Corolla and two other cars, about 2.40pm. The 19-year-old male driver of the Skyline fled on foot and police conducted a search of the area with the assistance of the Air Wing and the Dog Squad to find him. Police found the driver hiding in a nearby shed at 4.55pm and arrested him. He was charged with a range of offences including reckless conduct endangering life, theft of a vehicle and failure to stop at the scene of the accident. A 27-year-old Endeavour Hills woman believed to be a passenger in the Skyline was originally detained by passersby and handed over to police upon their arrival at the scene. She was arrested and taken to hospital for assessment and was later charged with theft of motor vehicle. The driver of the Corolla, a 29-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to Casey Hospital as a precaution. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A new campaign aimed at politicians to change the Marriage Act to allow samesex couples to marry has been launched with a forum in Berwick to mark the occasion. Members of the community from across Casey attended the event at the Berwick Inn on Tuesday 7 February and heard from guest speakers about the new campaign. The Equality Campaign is a joint effort between Australian Marriage Equality and Australians for Equality that aims to get people from across all communities involved in the fight for equality. Director of Australian Marriage Equality Tim Peppard and deputy director of the Equality Campaign Tiernan Brady spoke about the campaign and what the group is aiming to achieve. Hawthorn Football Club Hall of Famer Russell Greene and daughter Angie addressed the crowd on the importance of equality within society. They also shared touching personal stories of how anti-LGBTQI language has impacted on their family. Tiernan Brady said the campaign was aimed at encouraging people from across the nation to get in touch with their MP and share their stories. “This forum is one of a whole range we are running around the country because marriage equality isn’t an issue that is based in one part of the country,” he said. “It affects everybody, there are lesbian and gay people in every town and every village in Australia, and there are parents and brothers and sisters and family members and friends of lesbian and gay people.”
Despite parliament deciding not to go ahead with a plebiscite on marriage equality, Mr Brady said there were enough people on the ground in support of change that it was always worth campaigning. “Poll after poll in Australia shows there is a majority in favour of this,” he said. “Even a poll here in La Trobe shows a clear majority of people in La Trobe are in favour of this, and there is a really large majority of people in La Trobe that want parliament to pass this.” While ultimately the decision to change the Marriage Act to allow samesex couples to marry will be up to parliament, the Equality Campaign is aimed at everyday people. “I think the important thing we can do in having these constituency events is let people know how important everybody is in making this happen,” Mr Brady said. “Each and every one of us in Berwick or anywhere else has a role to play; your MP has to hear from you and we are getting people to tell their stories.” “The most effective thing in this campaign is not big media, it’s when people in Berwick phone their MP and talk to their MP.” While the push for marriage equality would mean a lot to people in the LGBTQI community, Mr Brady said it was a small change for most heterosexual people. “It’s a simple change that won’t cost anything, it won’t hurt anybody, nobody will be less married, and nobody will be more gay,” he said. “All that will happen is lesbian and gay Australians will be able to get married and the world will move on.”

MELBOURNE v BRISBANE Wild weather could not stop the electric atmosphere at Casey Fields on Sunday, where the Dees fell short by 15 points against the Lions in an entertaining and quite bizarre clash. About ten minutes after the opening bounce, where over 6000 spectators braved the ominous storm clouds, rain poured, and then thunder came. The storm was so intense that it forced the players from the ground just three minutes from half-time, with safety concerns an issue. But amidst the weather, the Lions came out on top, and defied the odds, beating a Melbourne side coming into the season as one of the hot favourites. With a strong northerly wind aiding the Dees in the first term, the home side were unable to capitalise, managing just three points, while the Lions failed to trouble the scoreboard. The Demons eventually got on the board through Jasmine Grierson, in a brief moment of exciting flair. But ever since the break in play, the Dees momentum seemed halted, with only moments after resumption of play, Sabrina Frederick-Traub used her athleticism to snap a freakish

Campbell. Lions on-baller Emily Bates (13 disposals and eight tackles) turned heads with her performance, showing great class in the stoppages, while Frederick-Traub was a constant threat down forward.
For the Dees, Karen Paxman was excellent with 24 disposals, while Daisy Pearce was clearly a class above in the extremely wet conditions, racking up 19 disposals and 10 tackles. Melbourne coach Mick Stinear said that the conditions weren’t to be blamed, and said that his side just struggled to adjust like the opposition. “It was a disappointing outcome - it was an energetic and special weekend for footy, and I know the girls wanted to put their best foot forward and get a win, but unfortunately we weren’t on the receiving end this week,” he said. “I felt like we were ready to go - we didn’t anticipate the unique conditions we faced, but full credit to Brisbane for putting in a four-quarter performance. “We took a little longer to adjust and we over possessed the ball - we probably cost ourselves some more quick clearances in that regard - credit to the crowd for sticking it out.” Stinear also said that moments of ill-discipline cost his team, and conceded they couldn’t find any momentum. “We gave away a lot of free kicks early, we were just second to the ball - in a low-scoring game it does prove costly and we’ll talk to the group about awareness and their discipline - you
can’t give an inch,” he said. “Momentum is critical, once you do get one or two goals, you can get on a roll, and that did hurt us - we will work on that.” Across the four games scattered around the country over the weekend, the inaugural round of the AFLW was a booming success, with over 50,000 spectators coming out to watch the country’s best female footballers finally come against one another. It all began with a huge clash between Carlton and Collingwood on Friday, before Adelaide and GWS clashed on Saturday afternoon and Western Bulldogs took on Fremantle on Saturday night. On Eagle wings to victory By Nick Creely An incredible 12-month period of success has elevated to new heights, with the Cranbourne Cricket Club tasting sweet victory at the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash at the MCG against GCA’s East Belmont on Wednesday morning. Some famous names, such as Ponting, Warne, McGrath and Gilchrist have all had their time on the G’, and now it’s time to marvel at the exploits of some of the names the powerful club at Casey Fields possess. It all began back in November with 16 teams, from each cricketing region across Victoria competing in a round-
robin to decide Victoria’s best country team. And it all came down to two evenly matched teams, one from the other side of town. East Belmont elected to bat first, as the MCG bathed in sunshine on a perfect Melbourne morning. After a solid start to their innings, the evergreen Matt Chasemore drew first blood, trapping a hapless Andrew Baars (6) in front LBW, leaving the Lions 1/25 off four overs. Then moments later, Cameron Kelly snared the dangerous Sean O’Neill (25), who skipped out to strong start, but was caught-behind.
It was slow going for the Lions, who looked to build and maintain a partnership, but every time some momentum swung their way, the Eagles were able to swoop in and grab a vital wicket. The Eagles kept them to just 107, with Steven Spoljaric (2/15), Matt Chasemore (1/13), Cameron Kelly (2/19), Jakeb McVicar (1/38) and Stuart Plunkett (2/5) among the wickets. And the Eagles started fairly slowly in their chase, reaching 1/30 off seven overs, before Brandon Tyzzer (29) fell with the score at 2/59 off 11 overs. Enter the legendary duo of Spoljaric and Chasemore, who accelerated for the Eagles, getting them to 3/96 before
Chasemore was caught off the bowling of Chris Williams for 39 off 35 balls. And it came down to the last three overs, with the Eagles needing 10 to win - the skipper Spoljaric then blasted his way home to glory in another commanding and match-winning performance, smashing the ball behindsquare for victory. The Eagles skipper was over the moon with his side’s performance, saying it really is only the beginning for his club’s quest for glory this season. “We know we are very dangerous side - it’s great for the club - it’s one of three trophies we will hopefully win this year,” he said post-match.
“The wicket was a bit slow, but we are used to that where we come from we’re all very happy. “The chance to play out here was great, everybody wanted to play - we didn’t need to spell out where we were, it’s the biggest ground in the world. “Tactically, we were much harder to hit - it favoured our attack and our game on the day, I suppose.” Cranbourne now sets its sights on Wednesday 22 February’s DDCA Twenty20 decider against Buckley Ridges, as well as the Turf 1 competition, where they are looking at backto-back flags.
Bears charge ahead to finals in a dominating display By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 9 (Day 1) Berwick are charging towards finals, totally dominating proceedings against North Dandenong at the Cave. The Maroons elected to bat, and with Jarrod Armitage and James Wilcock steaming in, the task was always going to be difficult. And the pair were simply electric early, with Wilcock (2/25) in particular, taking the stumps of the two openers out of the ground and Armitage (4/27) bowling some serious heat. The visitors were rattled after that, rolled for just 104 with Clayton McCartney (31) showing his class once again. Berwick are currently 4/151, with Nathan Pilon (84) playing a brutal knock. Hallam-Kalora Park possess the most consistent top-order batsmen in the competition, and once again they have delivered, posting a tricky 7/247 against Springvale South. Ben Hillard (59), Leigh Booth (30) and Jagveer Hayer (42) have been a cornerstone for the Hawks’ success with the bat this season, constantly providing the ladder-leader with solid foundations, and on Saturday they once again ensured they would make
life difficult for the bowlers. Corey Booth (53 not out) then provided the cream on top, with a second consecutive half-century, as the Hawks knocked around runs to stumps. The Bloods elected to bowl their slower bowlers for 52 overs of the day, with Jarryd Straker (3/76) and Craig Slocombe (2/55) doing the bulk of the bowling. If Dingley can do the unthinkable next week and knock off the champion Cranbourne side the Turf 1 competition will go into a tail-spin. That is how interesting this match at Souter Oval has become, with no side taking any ascendency after day one and very little separating third from eighth on the ladder. The Dingoes made 195, a very competitive home score, with Matt Chasemore (4/34) and Steve Spoljaric (4/79) carrying the bowling once again. Ryan McLean (61) found some touch his first half-century of the season, while skipper Travis Sawers (36) chimed in late with some handy runs. And the Eagles survived the day, finishing on 0/15 in a pressure-filled nine-over spell, with a lot of work yet to be done next week. There has been a lot more fight in the tank for Narre Warren in recent weeks, and it is a big chance to claim its first win of the season over a strug-
gling Parkfield outfit. The Magpies have endured a horrid season, but some light may still be in the tunnel, with a couple of promising performances in this latter part of the season. The Bears elected to bat, where they never really got going, skittled for just 153 - the impressive Mitchell Shirt (4/23) was destructive, while Janaka Liyanabadalge (3/19) has risen with the ball in the last couple of matches. With a testing 28-over period before stumps, the Magpies battled and battled, content to get through the day unscathed, finishing on 1/37 off 28 overs. A terrific half-century to Buckley Ridges middle-order bat Paul Rudd (71) has seen the Bucks walk off Park Oval in a dominant position over Dandenong West. Winning the toss and batting, the Bucks were flaying the ball to all parts, racking up 7/279 before declaring four overs from stumps. Daniel Bircumshaw (50) was strong at the top-end, while later in the innings, Daniel Watson (39), Luke Fletcher (44 not out) and Matthew Goodwright (25) belted runs with ease. And finally, all eyes were firmly fixed on Mordialloc in their clash, who needs to keep winning to stave off the hungry teams just below them,

HAMPTON PARK BOWLS The week started well for Hampton Park with both midweek teams winning. In Division 1 the two bottom teams, Hampton Park and Cardinia Waters played at Pound Road and the Parkers finished with a much-needed win. Marion Battaglia, Denise Eastick, John Nunan and Andrew Brandolin led most of the day for a 20-10 win, while Val Moore, Clint Mills, Christine Hendrie and Helen Lambert won 26-21. Toni Sutton, Ron Beverley, Geoff Ladner and Neville Hendrie fought back late in the game late but went down 15-21. Hampton Park (1) 14-61 defeated Cardinia Waters (1) 2-52. The high flying Division 3 travelled to Noble Park and came home strong 44 shot winners. Jen Sherry, Ann Westwell, Ian Kitt and Ray Wood had 21 shots on the card before the opposition scored before the game levelled out, they won 31-11. Jim Westwell, Stuart Tokely, Peter Hayden and Heather Naismith finished their game strong for a 32-17 won and Rhonda Diaper, June Damon, Brian Diaper and Geoff Ampt also finished the game strong after lunch for a 21-12 win. The win leaves the Parkers in finals running more than a game clear of Oakleigh, who they play next week. Hampton Park (2) 16-84 defeated Noble Park (3) 0-40. Saturday was another up and down day for the Parkers. Division 1 were at Ashburton and had another close loss. Mark Paton, John Nunan, Chris Barnes and Steve Barnes won 24-20, while Geoff Ladner, Sean McDonald, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm drew 18-18. CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cross Casey city rivals Cranbourne played Berwick at home in Round 14 to record exciting victories for both its first and third sides. The top side won by three shots winning on three rinks to give them 16 points for the day and move ahead of Berwick on the ladder. Wins to skips Doug Boggie by nine shots, John McKenna by four shots and Barry Thomas by two shots and their teams clinched the win. Skip Doug Boggie and his team were seven shots down at the tea break but managed a reversal of form to win by nine shots at the end of the day. Side 1 Division 2 Cranbourne 81 defeated Berwick 78 - B Thomas 23-21, D Boggie 25-16, J Byrne 1628, and J McKenna 17-13. The second side were away at Caulfield Park but went down by 18 shots. Skip Tony Collins and his team picked up 10 quick shots after the tea break and managed to get up by three shots and another great performance by Gerry Dudink and his team winning by 10 shots. The third side recorded a great win against Berwick (5) by four shots. Side 2 Division 3 Cranbourne 67 Lost to Caulfield Park 85 - G Dudink 25-15; M Scotter 8-27; P De Lisle 12-24 and T Collins 2219. Skip Rob Sorrensen and his team of Mick Feeley and Paul McNamara somehow managed to reduce an eleven shot deficit on their rink with six ends to be played with only three players and two bowls less each end but still managed a great comeback to bridge the gap to three shots. Skip Frank Male and his team of Brian Turton, Bill Sherriff and Mardy Tankard won by nine shots. Side 3 Division 4 Cranbourne 80 defeated Berwick (4) 76 - F Male 2516; J Kent 17-23; D Brown 2117 and R Sorensen 17-20. Warriors through at last By David Nagel Eight long years of heartache has come to an end for West Gippsland cricket after the Warriors reigned supreme in a tense Country Week grand final against Warragul at Preston City Oval on Friday. A classic square drive from manof-the-match Aaron Avery (32 not out) completed a clean sweep for the Warriors, who rode a strong team spirit to the ultimate prize. Captain Dom Paynter was extremely proud after the game. “It’s a big thrill. I’ve been on a few of these things now, and never had much luck, things seem to go against you but we played really well as a team and won the key moments during the week,” Paynter said. “We were positive that we had a team that could be competitive, but you still need blokes to step up and we had blokes do that all week. It’s a real feather in their caps that they made the commitment and now come away with the ultimate reward - I couldn’t be prouder right now.” The Warriors remained unbeaten for the week, with a first round bye followed by wins over Seymour, Colac and Central Gippsland ahead of Friday’s big dance. The Warriors had many key contributors, with Avery (3/23), Russ Lehman (81 not out) and Paynter (69) starring against Seymour before Matt Hutchinson (151) produced one of the great knocks in WGCA history against Colac. Hutchy flayed the ball to all parts of Elsternwick Oval, smashing his runs off just 94 balls in 114 minutes of mayhem. Pakenham’s Jason Williams (58) had the best seat in the

house as Hutchinson led the Warriors to 9/359, gaining crucial bonus points. Avery (4/24) was once again instrumental with the ball. Chris ‘Wombat’ Bright (63 off 43 balls) and 18-year-old offspinner Travis Wheller (1/18 off 7) were the stars on Thursday, with Bright bringing home the bacon after Wheller had changed the momentum with a fine spell prior to the adjournment. The Warriors bowled first in Friday’s decider with Paynter (3/3 off 2.1), Williams (2/21 off 5), Hutchinson (2/26 off 10) and Lehman (2/28 off 10) all claiming multiple scalps, but the performance of Wheller
(1/20 off 10) was once again special. From his first 39 balls he was scored off just twice, with five maidens giving a true indication of his control. Some great fielding from Avery, Paynter and Bright saw Warragul restricted to a modest 143. Hutchinson (17), Mark Cooper (20) and Rob Elston (26) all got solid starts but the Warriors needed a hero and Avery stood tall. He crafted a wonderful innings, sharing a critical 39-run partnership with Williams (13) to take his team to the brink of victory. That classic square drive saw the Warriors earn a hard-fought victory.
Wheller was also the star of the second day of round 12 on Saturday, with his fighting innings of 44 leading Cardinia (152) to a thrilling victory over Tooradin (135). The Bulls were 9/99 before Wheller and Brayden Browne (19 not out) combined for a last-wicket stand of 53. After claiming first-innings points in stunning fashion last week, the Swans batted once again, and looked in a spot of bother at 7/115 before finally staving off any potential reverse-outright loss, bowled out for 170 and chewing up plenty of overs.
