Don’t fall for it By Monique Kuzeff Wodonga residents are being warned to remain cautious about travelling con men who may pass through the area in coming months. A number of local residents have been hit with deception of this kind in recent weeks which is why Crime Stoppers and Consumer Affairs Victoria are encouraging residents to be on the lookout. Crime Stoppers community manager Chris Plumeridge said that the floods that occurred in early spring last year caused a spike in travelling con men to the area. “Because of the floods over the past couple of months a lot of people have been hit by travelling con men,” Mr Plumeridge said. “Obviously they are a bit vulnerable and are obviously in need of work on their house.” Mr Plumeridge said con men were people who often turn up to a house unannounced offering cheap home maintenance work including on gutters and driveways. “You might hand over the money, they might drive you to the bank and once you pay the money you may not ever see them again, “The work might be of very poor quality, the work might not be started or the work might not be completed,” he said. Travelling con men have been known to scam as much as $150 through to $20,000 off residents in the local area. “We’ve had stories of people being offered repaving on their driveway because the council has got left over bitumen. “They’ve gone around threatening people with fines for overhanging trees and a lot of other nasty tactics.” Residents are urged to reject con men and ask them to leave, use qualified tradespeople and check credentials before hiring. More than $2000 was raised as the Kelly Country Albury Harley Owners Group took to the roads, all in the name of ovarian cancer awareness and fund-raising. Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group spokesperson Heather Watts said the second annual ride proved a big success, with the riders raising even more than last year. Heather said the event saw the riders head out to Beechworth, Rutherglen and Corowa before returning to the St Ives cafe for lunch. And the biggest hit of the day was Bruce McInnes who raised $1800 on his own by shaving off his signature beard. “He had his beard for five years,” Heather said. “He has vowed to grow it straight back.” She said the event was well supported by both riders and by local businesses and had proven to be a big success. The event is just one of the fund-raisers that the Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group has been part of or held over the past four years.

Dills still playing with fire By Monique Kuzeff Over half of all bushfires in Victoria are either deliberately or recklessly lit, which is why Crime Stoppers has urged Wodonga residents to report unsafe and any suspicious behavior. Representatives from the CFA, Wodonga police, and DEWLP joined Crime Stoppers in launching its annual bushfire arson awareness campaign at The Cube on Wednesday. The campaign aimed to remind residents to be more “mindful” when lighting campfires and using machinery such as angle grinders on hot days. CFA district 24 operations manager Paul King said that the CFA had been called out daily to attend to arson fires since the fire danger period kicked. He said most were due to negligence with campfires, angle grinders and other machinery being used on the fire danger days. “People through their ignorance of the rules are not using their common sense about the conditions that are around them by lighting fires in the fire danger period,” Mr King said. “Every day we are going to fires whether they are caused by campfires or angle grinders and we can pretty much guarantee they will spark a fire. “It’s a really dangerous thing in the community and it takes members away from their work.” Crime Stoppers Victoria community manager Chris Plumeridge said residents are being urged to look out for signs of deliberate and reckless fire activities. “What we are looking out for is not only deliberate fire activity, maybe suspicious cars on the road or something like that, but we are also looking out for reckless fire activities as well,” he said. “This could be anything from using angle grinders and other hot tools

ties for lighting fires either deliberately or recklessly as it is a crime at the end of the day. “To light a fire on a total fire ban day whether the fire is out of control or not can be up to about $35,000 in fines

Charity is at full speed By Monique Kuzeff For the first time, an Albury trots event will be dedicated to a local charity through a collaboration of Albury Harness Racing Club and Lions Club of Lavington who will donate the event’s proceeds to the charity. The first of this annual trotting fundraiser will be held on 18 February at the Albury Harness Racing Club on Mate Street, North Albury, with the whole community welcome to come along for a fun evening out. All profits from the Lions Club of Lavington’s food sale and raffle profits and 50 per cent of the gate takings will go to the charity. Carevan founder John Brabant was delighted that the race meet would become an annual fund-raiser for the charity, saying it was “important” to get a regular source of funding. “These kinds of events aren’t just aimed at fund-raising, they are aimed at social awareness of poverty and that for us is just as important as the funds themselves,” Mr Brabant said. “For people to realise that there’s families living below the red line and can’t put seven meals a week on the table and that there are people out there doing it tough is a huge step in moving towards change.” Mr Brabant said funds from the event this year would be used for operating costs and to purchase a new van. “We are now supporting both Albury and Wodonga and the number of meals is going up all the time,” he said. “The van that we’ve currently got is pretty old and yet it could be given to say another community if we can get the funds together to get a new one for ourselves.” The Lions club of Lavington has been operating a kiosk at the showgrounds for some time now during race meets and other events. Club president Graham Jenkin said he and the club agreed it would be a worthy

“We believe the public would really support this trot event because we are being fully transparent, with 100 per cent of our profit on the night going towards Carevan. “They will know that each time they buy a hamburger or a cold drink that money will go to Carevan.” Mr Jenkins hoped that people would
come along to experience a great race evening out while supporting the Border’s homeless. “Why not get out into the community and enjoy other people’s company and the excitement, and atmosphere that are on offer here.” The gates will open from 5pm and tickets are $10 for adults.
Freeway slower for bridge inspection Motorists can expect minor delays on the Hume Freeway at Wodonga between High Street and Bandiana Link Road while traffic monitoring and bridge inspections take place on Wednesday and Thursday 8 and 9 February. On the northbound side, traffic will be restricted to one lane with a 40km/h speed limit. On the southbound side, traffic will be restricted to one lane with a 80km/h speed limit. The survey is part of VicRoads’ ongoing program to monitor and maintain bridge assets associated with Hume Freeway bridges over High Street and Bandiana Link Road. The changed traffic conditions will be in place from 7.30am and 5.30pm. VicRoads reminds motorists to drive to the conditions and observe the reduced speed limit for their own safety and the safety of workers. VicRoads thanks road users for their patience while these works are being done. Inspections are coordinated in partnership between VicRoads and Downer.

Highway works resume after spring floods By Monique Kuzeff The Riverina Highway Stage 2 upgrade from Lake Hume Resort to Bethanga Bridge is now expected to be completed by June 2018 after last year’s wet spring and flooding halted the work. The $11 million project was delayed last year due to the August and September flooding which made it unsafe to operate the heavy machinery required to carry out excavation works. Regional maintenance delivery manager from Roads and Maritime Service Mitch Judd said the ground conditions were “unfavourable” during the flooding period and prevented works from going ahead. Last month excavation works commenced and are expected to be completed by the end of February. This part of the works requires the use of heavy machinery such as excavators, rock hammers and bulldozers. Mr Judd said some of the
major challenges of the second stage works included the “tight” working area and the constrained property on both sides of the boundary. “The project is in a very restricted area with seeping embankments on one side and steep cuts on the other so we are working in a very tight zone,” Mr Judd said. “We’ve got to think carefully about how we manage our materials, how we think about our excavation and how we keep the road open at the same time. “The size and the area we can work in limits how much gear and people we can put on the job so it does make it extend our timeframe a little bit.” The fill from the excavation work will be used to widen the opposite, southbound lane of the highway and that work is expected to be completed by the end of March, Albury MP Greg Aplin said. “A lot of that will be used as fill on the southbound lane to
build it up so that it is a widened corridor,” Mr Aplin said. “It will be much improved, much safer with guard rails, culverts and better sign posting.” Mr Aplin said an 80km/h speed limit will stay intact once the work is completed but urged road users to remain aware of their speed, the signage and traffic controllers when using the road. “Safety is paramount for RMS and they will close one of the lanes during the construction which occurs Monday to Friday and also Saturday mornings,” he said. “You’ve got risks of not only the heavy machinery here on the road but you’ve got rock that is being pulled away and therefore the risk of slip as well and spillage on to the roads.” Work will be carried out on weekdays from 7am to 6pm and on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm, weather permitting.
Wodonga councillors will be stepping out from behind their desks and in to the community to talk to residents about how they’d like to shape 'The Wodonga We All Want to Live In' council plan for the new council term. The council has encouraged the community to offer their ideas at any number of the consultations that will take place in the community in February and March. The consultations aim to improve community engagement and input in shaping the city’s future with the material to be considered in the preparation of its 2017/18 budget. Wodonga mayor Anna Speedie said the consultations would be “comprehensive” and looked forward to talking and listening to the community along with her fellow councillors. “This process will probably be the most comprehensive I’ve seen and while it’s defined by State legislation and requirement its also defined by our want and our need to be able to provide to the community,” Cr Speedie said. “What it will do is ultimately lead in to that whole budget process and sets the budgets for the next four years.” The consultation process

Wodonga leaders forum which cater for work and family commitments. Albury kicks off the show Twenty-five years ago a young guy from Albury-Wodonga changed the face of Australian country music with a song and album inspired by growing up around the Riverina. Almost overnight Lee Kenaghan went from playing local pubs and calling the bingo down the club to touring Australia. The album was his Aria Award winning debut release Outback Club and the songs were inspired by growing up in the Riverina - many having their germination in his old bedroom back in Dallinger Road, Lavington including the one that became his first single and first hit - Boys From The Bush. And now to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Boys From The Bush and Outback Club (which earned him the first three of his 36 Golden Guitars) Lee is hitting the road and Albury is one of his first stops. The national tour, launched last week in Tamworth will see him travel all over Australia, both celebrating his first album and promoting the 25th anni-

aren’t going,” he laughed. “But to think it all began in Albury,” he said, explaining that he was pleased that it would be one of the early shows in the Australia-wide tour. “Coming back to my home town for this 25th anniversary show is just super special and so exciting for me. “There is so much history and heritage for me and my family.” He said when they started working on the album, producer Garth Porter told him to mine the stories and experiences of growing up around Albury and his family heritage (his grandfather was a drover around the Riverina). It is a move that paid off for the 2008 Australian of the year. Tickets are now on sale and are expected to go fast for the 25th Anniversary Show on Friday 21 April, at 8pm at the Albury Entertainment Centre. Broad lift in median house price In good signs for regional Victoria, house prices in the December quarter rose to a median of $358,000, a $7000 statewide increase from the previous quarter. This included increases in 22 local government areas across the state, the highest recorded in the Southern Grampians where house prices increased 19.6 per cent. Hepburn, the Macedon Ranges, Baw Baw and the Colac-Otway shires all recorded strong growth along with popular coastal shires of Bass Coast, City of Greater Geelong and the Surf Coast. Geelong suburbs that performed well over the last three months of 2016 included East Geelong where the median price is now $530,000, up 10.3 per cent; Hamlyn Heights, up 8.2 per cent to $427,250; North

While the median house price in the City of Ballarat remained static, the picture was different in individual suburbs with Ballarat North up 4.3 per cent, Alfredton 3.4 per cent, Invermay Park 2.8 per cent and Cardigan Village two per cent. Maiden Gully (12.3 per cent), Bendigo (8.2 per cent) and Heathcote (7.1 per cent) all had increases in the Greater City of Bendigo, while house prices in Wangaratta
Geelong, up 7.4 per cent to $350,000; and Belmont, up 6.2 per cent to $430,000. Along the popular Bass Coast, Kilcunda experienced double-digit price growth to a median of $490,250, while Cape Woolamai increased 5.9 per cent to $419,000 and Inverloch rose 5.8 per cent to $481,250. And in the west, the Surf Coast Shire median house price increased 6.7 per cent to $688,000, with the town of Jan Juc experiencing price growth of almost 11 per cent to a median of $710,000. The Macedon Ranges remains a popular location, especially for commuters to Melbourne. The shire median increased 7.1 per cent to $590,000 with New Gisborne up 10.3 per cent ($590,000) and Riddells Creek 9.2 per cent ($611,250).

The Sharks were in top form, defeating rivals Northside Stingrays 18-6. Meanwhile, in the other game Albury Tigers had a tougher time, pipping the Pool Pirates 7-4 at the Albury Swim Centre. However, the Tigers still lead the way in the competition with just a few weeks to go. The Tigers are on top with 38 points with the Sharks taking second spot on 29. However, the real battle is on the bottom of the ladder where Pool Pirates and Northside are both on 22 points. Round 15 will see Sharks play Pool Pirates on Friday night at 7.45pm at Wodonga while Tigers and Stingrays play at Wodonga on Sunday morning at 9am.
