Motorists with more than $141,000 of outstanding warrants had their day of reckoning during a Sheriff’s Office and Victoria Police joint clampdown in Narre Warren and Cranbourne on Tuesday, 31 January. Twenty-three fine evaders with a collective 422 outstanding warrants were detected with Automatic Number Plate Recognition in just three hours on Cranbourne Road in Narre Warren and Linsell Boulevard in Cranbourne. Eight fine evaders paid more than $13,000 to clear 42 warrants on the day. Another seven were required to pay more than $27,000 in debts within a week to avoid suspension of their driver licences or vehicle registrations. Officers clamped one vehicle’s wheel - which would remain clamped until the driver’s debt was cleared. At the same sites, Victoria Police members conducted breath tests and detected six unregistered vehicles, six unlicensed drivers and six people driving while suspended. Sergeant Katie Arnol, of Cranbourne police, said suspended, unregistered and unlicensed drivers were a particular target given they were involved in 19 per cent of fatal car crashes in Victoria. Automatic Number Plate Recognition sites were being operated monthly in Casey to help drive down the high incidence of banned motorists, Sgt Arnol said. She regarded the latest operation’s numbers as “slower than usual” in Casey. Sheriff of Victoria Brendan Facey said the operation showed his officers could be “anywhere at any time”. “This operation was designed to find those people who are deliberately trying to avoid paying their fines, while minimising any inconvenience to other motorists. “Paying your fines is not voluntary. “If you do incur a fine, contact us to discuss your options and deal with it early before additional penalties apply.”

Tolls rise: freight fraught with fear By Victoria Stone-Meadows A truck driver from Narre Warren South is worried that the increase in tolls for heavy commercial vehicles will hurt his bottom line, making his small business less competitive. Graeme Bevis is a tow truck driver who uses CityLink on a daily basis to transport containers and transport machinery into the city. He has been in business for about 14 years, but is concerned the most recent increase in tolls on the CityLink will price himself out of the industry. “I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he said. “I will have to pass it on to my customers, and come 1 April the cost will be more than double, and I’m worried I can’t do it any more after that.” Mr Bevis received a letter from CityLink dated 23 January, informing him that the cost of travelling in heavy commercial vehicles on the toll road will increase from 1.9 times that of a car to 3 times. The daily toll cap of travelling
on CityLink in such a vehicle is currently $11.85 but is set to increase to $26.70 after 1 April. “It is really going to hurt my business,” Mr Bevis said. “Clients will shop around to try to find a cheaper operator, and a lot of people in my industry are not happy about it.” The letter from CityLink informed Mr Bevis that an increase in the cost of tolls will be used to help fund the CityLink Tulla Widening project. The project to widen the Tullamarine Freeway and upgrade intersections and interchanges will cost a total of $1.28 billion. It is jointly funded by the Federal Government, the Victorian State Government and CityLink’s operator Transurban. The letter also states that the new toll prices will bring the cost of traveling on CityLink in line with other toll roads. However, the daily toll cap of travelling in a heavy commercial vehicle on Melbourne’s other major
toll road, EastLink, is $16.01 A Transurban spokesperson said the freight industry had been aware of the coming changes for some time, but added the widening project would improve traffic. “The changes were announced in 2014, and we’ve been working with the freight industry for more than two years so they could be prepared for these changes,” the spokesperson said. “The CityLink Tulla Widening Project will improve productivity for the freight industry.” “The benefits of the project include travel time savings of about 30 minutes on a return trip between the city tunnels and Melbourne Airport, more reliable travel times with a 30 per cent increase in capacity, and a safer road with 20 per cent fewer casualty crashes.” Transurban is contributing around $1 billion towards the $1.28 billion CityLink Tulla Widening project. “Tolls for trucks on other toll road operators are between 2.7 and 3.3 times a car and on many other
roads interstate they are 3.0 times a car,” the spokesperson said. Shadow Roads Minister Ryan Smith said business operators should expect to be hit with increased tolls when major road work operations get underway. “I think people expect to pay tolls on these roads,” he said. “Obviously, the deal struck with Transurban to pay for the Tulla widening did involve those increases of tolls, but I think the business operators who use it should expect the level of disruption to be kept at a minimum.” Brad Battin MP State Member for Gembrook also weighed in on the debate, saying the tolls increase is the fault of the current State Government. “Daniel Andrews’ decision to make local family businesses and truck drivers the losers in Victoria is unfair and outrageous,” he said. “The unjustified increase in tolls and registrations will place pressure on business in Casey and Cardinia, cost local jobs and place the truck driving industry at risk.”
A man had to be coaxed down from the roof of a petrol station on the corner of Hall Road and the Westernport Highway following a public family violence dispute. Police were called to the petrol station just after 6.30am on Friday 27 January where, they said, the drug-affected man aged in his thirties had climbed onto the roof of the building. It was believed the man and his partner began arguing in the McDonald’s restaurant across the road from the petrol station, then that dispute escalated to violence. Police said the man left the restaurant and proceeded to damage his partner’s car before climbing into the roof of the petrol station and threatened to end his life by jumping from the building. Police from Carrum Downs attended the incident and convinced the man to safely come down from the roof after almost an hour of negotiations. Ambulance also attended the scene and took the man to hospital for medical assessment immediately following his decent from the rooftop. Police said they would charge the man with criminal damage and family violence offences following the incident. Hungry Jack’s raided The store manager of the Hungry Jack’s on South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne has been threatened by two thieves wielding machetes in the early hours on Monday 30 January. About 4.15am, two men wearing balaclavas used a large brick to smash the front window of the store and unlock the door to gain entry to the building. They then proceeded to jump the counter of the store and threaten the store manager with machetes while he opened the safe for them. The two robbers made away on foot towards Thompsons Road with about $3000 in cash. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Power to the sisterhood By Victoria Stone-Meadows A Cranbourne woman is on a personal mission to help women in the region and beyond find empowerment within themselves and help them to become influential leaders. Samantha Jansen is working with other women on a collaborative book that aims to give women the necessary tools to find their inner strength. The book, entitled She Leads, will be organised into three categories of Influence, Empowerment, and Wealth so women can work on a particular aspect of themselves they want to explore.
“At the end of last year, the idea came to me and currently I have about eight authors on board,” she said. “We really want to create more than a book; there will be work book for every author as well that women can use as a checklist.” Ms Jansen believes that the more work and effort she can put into the project, the more her audience will get out of it. “You have to give them a lot of value so they can feel like each chapter resonates with them and they can explore those sides,” she said. Along with launching the book in July, Ms Jansen is hop-
ing to organise a one-off motivational seminar for women in the area with contributing authors as speakers and motivators. “We are all Australian women influencing Australian women,” she said. “It’s a very Australian based project and I am hoping to have a one-day event on October where the authors can connect with the women and take them on a journey.” Ms Jansen is a business consultant and single mum of two kids who decided that this year was going to be the year she helped other women discover what they were capable of.
“I was a single mum with a three-year-old and new born and I asked myself what do I do? “I started my business four years ago and started a consulting with businesses using the skills I have because I didn’t want to go back to my corporate job in the city.” “I started to work on my personal self to find out who I am. “I was 27-years-old with two kids wondering what I was
doing and that’s where I discovered I was passionate about helping women wondering who they are and what they stand for.” Ms Jansen said she has found a lot of meaning in what she is doing and is very excited to get her empowering women project up and running. “The more I work the more I have realised I can do this and make an impact and there is always a better way,” she said.
“When the idea first struck me I had to ask myself why am I not doing this? Why just toy with the idea?” Ms Jansen is looking to have the book finished and launched in July this year once all contributing authors have finished their portions of the project. “It is a good one-year project but if I can tell women out there anything it is that there is something to look forward to.”

Trapped in car By Victoria Stone-Meadows Emergency services had to free a woman trapped in her car the day after Australia Day when she rolled her vehicle on the South Gippsland Highway early on Friday morning. CFA and Ambulance crews were called to the scene of the crash near North Road in Devon Meadows just before 8am on 27 January to find the woman trapped in her toppled car. Two CFA trucks from Cranbourne, two trucks from Devon Meadows and the rescue truck from Langwarrin were required to free her.
Second Lieutenant from Devon Meadows CFA John Sanderson said the woman was lucky to have walked away from the incident without serious injuries and thanked the woman’s colleague for her help. “She was taken off to hospital via ambulance with a sore neck but overall was very lucky,” Mr Sanderson said. “We did have to cut her out, but before we got there, another lady who works at the same place hopped in the car and sat with her until help arrived.” “She got in when the car was on its side to help keep the trapped woman’s airways open,
helping to save her life.” The rescue crew from the CFA had to stabilise the car and stabilise the trapped woman before they could use the Jaws of Life to remove the car roof and free her for the paramedics. Mr Sanderson said the operation lasted over half an hour, but all the crews worked together efficiently to help the woman. “You can’t rush it,” he said. “We have to make sure they are stable first and cut the roof of the car to get her out safely; it takes time to make sure she is protected.”

I have read in the local news that the council has decided to have a People’s Panel. What a joke and a waste of money, nearly $20,000 it will be for sure. The council gets payed to make decisions and if we are not happy we can contact you. Imagine if the state and federal governments started these forums. I have a few more things I am not happy about. Mayor, no more trips to China, it’s a waste of time and money. You are not the Trade Minister or Prime Minister, you are the Mayor of Casey in Australia. As for Susan Serey, why would we need to have relations with Israel when you can do most things on the internet - just another junket. Another thing I’m not happy about is the roundabouts and concrete centre strips which are not painted yellow. Hit one and you will find out the damage it can do to your vehicle, especially at night or when it is raining and hard to see. I say to the people of Casey, don’t just sit on your hands and say nothing or leave it to somebody else. Ring your local councillor, that’s what they are payed for. If you like to know how much councillors spent on their mobile phones or entertainment or other things you have to pay to get it from Freedom of Information. The council holds too many meetings in secret which the State Government took action against last year. So in 2017 contact your councillor and ask questions on how they are spending our money. Apartments are needed at low prices and investors/foreign investors ought to be kept out of the purchasing. There is need for a control of investment of foreign countries and foreign entities and a register created. All foreign ownership of Australian assets should 60:40, 60 being Australian. The newly constructed apartments should be made available to first home buyers first and after that to others. The Melbourne CBD is awash with homeless people on the streets. Does this not irk our “elected“ self-seeking politicians who do not want to rock the shaky boat of a government which is effete and has done sweet B for the welfare of the poor and needy. Government today is a charade with the opposition and the Government both following a policy of ‘you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours’. The entire gang in parliament are playing a game of retaining their source of income by not rocking the boat. You can fool some of the people some of the time but not all the people all of the time. Turnbull when the term nears will escalate another double dissolution and blame the system for this dissolution. We the voters are the fools and pawns in this charade. I hope social justice movements of religious organisations will take this responsibility of alerting the Government as to the urgent need for affordable housing.
Roundabout moves I refer to the “open letter to Casey Council from the residents of the Berwick Springs Estate� published in last week’s News. It is full of inaccuracies. At the core of the inaccuracies is that the planning for the area was undertaken by the Victorian Planning Authority which also conducted the public consultation - not by council - and the Minister for Planning created the relevant amendment - not council. Very late in the VPA’s process, VicRoads advised the VPA that the roundabout had to be larger (sensibly, to accommodate a future arterial road upgrade). The VPA made that change and required a larger roundabout, expanding to the south of the current smaller roundabout. That change became apparent when the amendment and associated documentation became available after approval by the minister. In response to recent residents’ concerns, council resolved in November last year to investigate whether the roundabout could be moved further north. Officers are currently preparing a report which will be considered by council on 21 February. Mike Tyler, CEO, City of Casey.

Housing action The housing shortage has reached crisis proportions. The poor are the worst hit. May I suggest that Bill Shorten’s opposition alerts the Government to the need for action, there is plenty of land available. For example, Federation Square was once the eyesore of the CBD but today it is prime property. Similarly there are vast tracks of land over the entire rail track system and at stations. The Government should commandeer these land tracts and hand them over to builders for construction of high-rise apartments with one two and three bedrooms - problem solved. Too easy, why bother. No one cares for the poor. Housing should be given a priority and must be addressed right now. The average home is between $450,000 and $500,000 which is way out of reach of the average earner.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows A woman from Pakenham who lost her son three years ago in tragic circumstances has found comfort and closure from an unlikely source. Bozica Davis, known as Bobo, lost her son Aaron to suicide and was missing him terribly before she connected with psychic medium Dennis Stojkovic who works in Narre Warren. “I have been to a few other readers, mostly they have been tarot card readers rather than mediums without the cards. As the 2017 school year kicked off, three new schools in the Cranbourne area officially opened their doors to students on Tuesday 31 January with very special visitors. Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera visited Barton Primary School in Cranbourne West, Tulliallan Primary in Cranbourne North and Willandra Rise in Clyde North. The new schools are all state-of-the-art purpose-built educational facilities with new technology and building designs to encourage learning and teamwork among the students. Barton Primary School also had a visit from the great-granddaughter of Australia’s first Prime Minister Sir Edmund Barton after whom the school is named. Barton Primary school principal Andrew Felsinger said the opening wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of his hard working teaching and administration staff. “The teachers have worked really hard over the last three weeks to get this ready,” Mr Felsinger said. “They worked their whole vacation, as did our admin team, and put in some really long hours to make it happen.” “Today is day one and we have a long future ahead of us,” he said. Mr Felsinger gave the visitors a tour of the brand new school building before an official ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the new school. In addressing the assembled students, parents, and teachers, Mr Merlino said the new schools in the growing Cranbourne area were more than just an investment in infrastructure. “Our south-east suburbs are booming, and we’re investing in infrastructure support growing enrolments as well as creating bright futures for our kids and ensuring they get the education they need in the facilities they deserve.” Mr Felsinger said Barton Primary school would give a thoroughly modern education for the modern student and was looking forward to

New-look club gets in tune with new theme The Casey Scorpions VLF Club has taken a step closer to the Melbourne AFL Football Club by adopting the new name of the Casey Demons. The rebranding will see not only a new name, logo and uniform but the club will also record a new theme song to align with its new image. The Casey Demons are launching a competition to provide talented City of Casey residents to perform, record and launch the new Casey Demons theme song.
Music and Lyrics to Grand Old Flag will be provided to entrants upon registration into the competition and there are criteria in place for the winners to keep the entrants thoroughly local. The winning applicant must be able to participate in an audition, be a City of Casey resident, be able to perform and record at a time to be determined by the club and agree to be promoted via social media and newspaper media.
The competition is being run by councillor Amanda Stapledon and she said there are a few things that organisers are looking for in the new voice of the Demons. “It’s an exciting community development opportunity and we are reaching out to our preforming artists because I know we have great talent in Casey,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to be the voice behind the new club and we hope a wide variety of artists get involved

Meet Our New Team KEREN is a certified yoga & meditation teacher who studied with the Byron Yoga Centre and Melbourne Meditation Centre. She first experienced yoga many years ago in high school where she was taught the basic postures and breathing techniques to support her during exam times. It wasn’t until several years later that Keren discovered the true benefits of yoga and meditation after experiencing the devastating effects of stress and anxiety. Keren believes that everyone can benefit from the practice of yoga. She teaches with compassion and the complete understanding that we all have different needs and many different reasons for being drawn to the practice of yoga. Keren’s style of teaching comes from her studies of Purna Yoga. This style is not just about the physical postures but also integrates pranayama (breathing), meditation and philosophy. Keren also has a passion for alignment based & restorative yoga practices. Taking time out, slowing down & giving back to yourself is so important in todays busy society! Keren is always available to discuss anything about yoga & our wonderful studio KIM is a certified level two yoga teacher with over six years teaching experience and has been practising yoga for twenty years. She completed her yoga teacher training with Byron Yoga and is a Rainbow Kid’s yoga teacher. Kim discovered yoga through a friend in her early twenties. From the moment she sat on the mat, she knew she had found home. She believes that attendance at a yoga class or having a regular yoga practice, helps to balance the mind, body, emotions and spirit. She feels that if everyone practised yoga once a week, the world would be a better place. Kim teaches a range of styles including Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin and Restorative. She also believes in the healing benefits of Pranayama and regularly teaches Yoga Nidra in her classes. She likes to focus on the physical needs of the class participants and helps people to find their centre and connect to their sense of purpose. In her classes, participants are encouraged to feel empowered through their practice and this can help them to develop a sense of being grounded in their lives. Kim also believes deeply in the sacred space that a yoga class creates, while keeping a playful attitude to life and tries to bring this to her classes. Over the years Kim has found that yoga has calmed her busy mind and created focus in this demanding world. The asanas (postures) have kept her body fit and healthy. She has a keen interest in yoga philosophy and often brings this awareness of the practices of the eight limbs of yoga into her classes. As well as incorporating the philosophical side, she can also help you to see how yoga can come off the mat and into your daily life. Over the past three years she has discovered Yin and now feels passionate about the space this style creates in the body, mind and emotions. Kim also facilitates crystal singing bowl workshops and runs meditation classes through out Melbourne. She has her level two first aid. RACHAEL Yoga has been in my life for about 25 years. I first discovered it when I was around 15 years old. I was looking for something to help me connect with myself; to try and find ‘me’. I was a pretty wild teenager and partied quite hard through my teens and early 20’s, but yoga was always there as a way to bring me back to ‘me’. I do believe it was the one thing that kept me grounded and stopped me from going off the deep end. I studied through The Australasian Yoga Institute and am a Level 1 Certified Teacher with Yoga Australia. I’ve been teaching for around 3 years now and I still feel an immense excitement before each class I teach. It’s a passion and an honour to share what I have learnt. I will challenge my students, to help get out of their heads and into their bodies, to feel, to learn, to go within and to get to know their innermost selves and to know the strength they have (both physical and mental) when they trust in themselves and their bodies, and love every minute of it. I encourage lots of laughs! It’s the best way to relax body and mind, even when I have you twisted and balancing (sometimes even at the same time!) I can’t wait to guide you through your practice and watch you grow.

Top achievers awarded By Victoria Stone-Meadows The 2017 Casey Council Australia Day awards were presented to five people and two events at a ceremony at the Casey Council offices on the night of 26 January. There was stiff competition across all the categories and the winners were picked for their dedication and standout performances in serving the communities of Casey. “I am proud the City of Casey has many wonderful residents who make an invaluable contribution to the Casey community,” mayor Sam Aziz said. “From helping those less fortunate and volunteering in sporting clubs to assisting in emergency response and simply seeing a need and filling a gap.” Cr Aziz said the awards were more than recognition of people’s work but an opportunity to say thank you to those who volunteer their time for others. “The Casey Australia Day Awards provide us with an opportunity to say thanks to those who go above and beyond in their local community and play a positive role in making Casey a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family - your contribution does not go unnoticed,” Cr Aziz said. The Casey Citizen of the Year award was presented to Anne McGill of Berwick for her work with Rotary Inner Wheel both within Australia and internationally. A member of the Narre Warren Inner Wheel for 36 years, Ms McGill has inspired members to raise over $2.5 million for various community causes. She said she wasn’t expecting to receive the award but was grateful for the people of Casey for affording her the opportunities she has had. “I was completely overwhelmed, it was just lovely - I wasn’t expecting it,” she said. “I wouldn’t have been involved without being a member of Inner Wheel and all the support they gave in all the events and activities I have run.” Ms McGill has also worked tirelessly in Casey on the Wilson Botanic Park committee, a founding member of the Berwick Highland Games, 25 years of service to the City of Casey Meals on Wheels program, and ongoing volunteering with the Cancer Council of Victoria. “I am very thrilled and pleased and appreciate the people that nominated me,” she said. The Casey Young Citizen of the year was awarded to 16-year-old Alyssa Weston from Cranbourne for her outstanding work with the Casey Basketball Association on and off the court. Ms Weston plays for the Casey Cavaliers representative junior and senior teams and is a Big V women’s development player. She also coached young girls, representative teams and children with autism all while studying with the selective sports academy at high school. Her dedication to the sport of basketball and her commitment to coaching the next generation of players has built her into a highly positive role model for women’s sport both in Casey and abroad. Casey Senior Citizen of the Year was received by Edward (Ted) Clay of Tooradin for his long and dedicated involvement with the Tooradin fire brigade. Mr Clay first signed up with the brigade in 1956 and has held four distinct leadership roles over his 60 years of service, including captaining the brigade for 22 years. Having stepped down from the leadership, he still serves the brigade as treasurer and fire equipment maintenance officer. Casey Sportsperson of the Year is Reiley Mark from Berwick, a promising young cricketer who at age 13 has achieved more in the sport than men twice his age.

Reiley represented Victoria three years running, won three national titles, and been named an Australian All Star as well as the vice-captaining the Australia A team on his first international tour in 2015. This year, the City of Casey awarded a Casey Non-resident of the Year prize to a man who has done a lot of work the people of Casey but doesn’t actually reside here. David Nugent, founder of Heavy METAL (Men’s Education Towards Anger and Life) which operates from the Hallam Senior College, was awarded the prize. His program offers behaviour change and counselling support to men, women and children affected by family violence. Always working to improve the people of Casey, he organised a community screening of the ABC documentary ‘Call Me Dad’, is involved in White Ribbon Day events and advocates to the State Government on important community issues. There were two separate awards for community events this year with events from Berwick and Cranbourne taking out awards. The Casey Community Fund-raising Event/Activity of the Year was given to Frost Week, Cure de Berwick, lead by the Berwick College Frost Learning Team.

Breakfast of champions A free breaky kicked off Australia Day celebrations in Hampton Park. The Hampton Park Networking Group event at Arthur Wren Hall on Thursday 26 January also included an animal farm, face painting, jumping castles, market stalls and more. Holt MP Anthony Byrne handed out Australia Day awards to 28 individuals and seven organisations at the Day of the Nations celebration. “Australia Day is a wonderful day when we can recognise those people who contribute to the community and make our community a better place,” he said. Leonard O’Brien was among the winners. He joined Narre Warren Bowls Club on 9 September 1999 after deteriorating eyesight forced him into retirement. Len soon became one of the club’s most active volunteers. Mr Byrne said that Len always set up the greens on bowls days, putting out the mats, jacks, rakes, scoreboards, flags, umpires’ kit and other equipment that everyone else tended to forget about for the day’s play. Len then fills the urn, sets up tables and chairs, and makes sure the toilets are clean. Mr Byrne said Len considered it one of his many duties to walk from home to the club - a considerable distance - to make sure the rubbish bins were put out for council collection. Len joined Blind Bowls Victoria in 2000 and in his first year represented the state in the Australian Blind Bowls
Championships. He’s followed suit every year since. The Cranbourne Library was another award winner. With Casey Cardinia Library Corporation it last year launched a Forgiving Tree initiative that delivered muchneeded resources for local charities in the lead up to Christmas. The library directed book fines and other fees to the tree, raising more than $15,000 for the Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS). The initiative prompted people to return almost $18,000 worth of lost items. Cranbourne Library staff Wendy Morrison and Sue Sleet and Casey Cardinia Library Corporation CEO Chris Buckingham were instrumental in making the Forgiving Tree a success. Another award recipient, Narre Warren 16-year-old Destanee Aiava, captured imaginations across the country playing in this year’s Australian Open. As a junior, she was involved in the Serious Tennis program run by Justin Yeo in Doveton. In 2012 at age 12, Destanee became an international star by winning the Longines Future Tennis Aces Tournament at Roland Garros in Paris, France. Her prize was an opportunity to hit with 22-time Grand Slam winner Steffi Graf. This year she broke onto the world stage and broke a record, becoming the first player born in the 2000s to win a main draw match at an elite WTA event, the Brisbane International.

For the past 20 years Lind-Elle School Of Dance has been helping budding dancers twirling in the kitchen take the next step, and on 21 January they will hold an open day from 10am to 2pm to showcase what they do. Over the past two decades, LindElle has offered professional dance tuition to dancers of all ages and stages. Starting at just two years to adult, they cater for students - beginner to advanced. The Lind-Elle team pride themselves on their warm friendly atmosphere, and fantastic facilities including lounge, kitchen, play area, parking and three dance studios. Lind-Elle runs a tiny tot program and Teeny Tiny Tot program aimed at setting little dancers up with a love of dance from the very start.
Styles include ballet, lyrical, jazz, acrobatics, tap, hip hop, contemporary and pointe with optional exams. Capped class sizes and supported teachers aim to provide a warm learning environment. For students looking to extend themselves, Lind-Elle offers a performance extension program. This program includes flexibility, acrobatics and ballet strengthening classes. Lind-Elle cater for recreational students as well as those who strive to take their dancing to the next level. All students, recreational and competition, perform at an annual concert, and will receive a trophy at the end of year event. Teams in all age groups, attend various competitions with two teams making it through to the National Championships in 2016.

Sweet and spicy savoured EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL By Cam Lucadou-Wells There were plenty of flavours to savour from dining out on some of south-east Melbourne’s newest eating spots in 2016. Here are our year’s picks of some of the most affordable and sheer delicious eats, adding to the region’s rising foodie reputation. Don’t be shy to discover and enjoy the following eateries, and to let us know what should be added to our indulgent itinerary for 2017. So without further ado, below are the 2016 Dine Local awards.
Up to 700 of these colossal ice-cream milkshakes embossed with candies, chocolate sauce, fairy floss and Tim Tams were bought each day. However, we’re not sure every customer would have been able to finish one of these creations. Under the radar was an equally thoughtful and creative menu of pre-dessert food such as a smashed avo rosti including flavours of dukka and, goats cheese, and eggs Benedict with coffee, vanilla, banana and maple syrup. The cafe’s drawing power has caught the attention of shopping centres which have courted owner Steven Richard for possible franchising opportunities. As it is, Mr Richard has plans to duplicate his success with a Dandenong branch to open in 2017.

Highly rated change By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Cranbourne Park shopping centre has been awarded two fivestar ratings for their baby change rooms from the Australian Breastfeeding Association. The shopping centre has received The Baby Care Room
symbol, which is awarded when a room meets the essential criteria for a baby care room. All baby care rooms have to meet basic requirements such as comfortable seating, smoke free, safe and clean to change nappies but the rooms at Cranbourne Park
go that extra mile. They were awarded a five-star rating for including elements such as toddler toilets, secure play areas, air-conditioning and private breastfeeding areas and so on. Australian Breastfeeding Association group leader Jenny Cincot-
ta said the rooms will be of great comfort to the women using them. “The high standard of the baby care room will be a great resource for many mothers in the area, and will provide a welcoming and comfortable space for local breastfeeding mothers,” she said.
Two schools in Casey will be adopting the Doctors in Schools Program put in place by the State Government during the 2017 school year. Phase one of the program will see 20 schools across the state have a GP visit the school one day a week and Narre Warren South P-12 College is one of the schools allocated in the first phase. College principal Rob Duncan said having a doctor on site at the school will mean students can access medical assistance for matters that are important them when they need it. “The program provides medical access to students a day a week which is more than just general GP checkup,” Mr Duncan said. “Obviously there will be a focus on adolescent health and issues that are important to young adults, and while we are a Prep to 12 college, the doctors in schools program is targeted at secondary students.” Mr Duncan believes having a doctor at the school will be a really positive thing for students and will work well with the school’s established students wellbeing practises. “It’s going to be a real advantage,” he said. “It will be fully integrated and work hand in hand with our wellbeing program but out of separate buildings.”
Phase three of the doctors in schools rollout will start in term three of the 2017 school year with Cranbourne Secondary College one of the 40 to get a doctor in that phase. Acting principal at Cranbourne secondary John Jovic said the school was looking forward to having access to a GP on site. “It’s going to be a positive for us as we often advise the involvement of doctors but we rely on external appointments being made in clinics and practises in community,” he said. “Unfortunately, those aren’t followed through with for a variety of reasons so to be able to have access to that on site will make it more efficient and effective, especially for students with special wellbeing needs.” The announcement of the schools came from the the State Government on 19 January and Minister for Education James Merlino said having doctors in schools would mean more young people getting the medical attention they need. “We know young people have some of the lowest GP attendance rates, meaning many are missing out on the vital healthcare they need,” he said. “This will help address barriers preventing young Victorians from seeing a doctor.”

Anticipation is reaching boiling point in what is set to be a landmark weekend for women’s sport in Australia, with hundreds of the most talented women’s footballers set to pull on their boots and jumper and battle it out. But attention turns to Sunday’s clash at Casey Fields, with Melbourne set to face-off with the Brisbane Lions. The Demons are one of the competition’s heavy favourites; a side glittered with experience and star-power. Led by Daisy Pearce, regarded as the Gary Ablett Jnr of the AFLW, they instantly have a match-winning superstar on their side. Pearce has a footballing CV that is unrivalled by any in this inaugural year - she is a six-time All-Australian, six-time VWFL Premier Division B&F winner, and the winner of the 2016 VFL Women’s Best and Fairest with Darebin. Other stars, such as the aggressive defender Melissa Hickey, will be vital for the Dees on Sunday, while other important figures Laura Duryea, Lily Mithen, Elise O’Dea and Deanna Berry are raring to go. Ainslie Kemp is one of a raft of youngsters that has excited coaches at the Dees, while others
such as Sarah Lampard and Jasmine Grierson are impressive. At this stage, the Demons have 25 out of 27 players available, with Pepa Randall ruled out and Brooke Patterson unlikely to take her place. They tackle a Lions outfit who are wellbalanced and have a fantastic mixture of youth and experience, as well as an abundance of quality key-position players and depth around the ground. But Tayla Harris, one of the Lions marquee players, is racing the clock to be fit for the inaugural match, after injuring her shoulder in a gym mishap last week - if she misses; it is a huge blow for the Lions. Led by the highly-skilled Emma Zielke, who is one of the competition’s elite ball-users, they will fancy their chances on the picturesque turf out on Casey Fields. The Lions are coached by former Collingwood and Brisbane Bears star Craig Starcevich, who played 144 games at the elite level, while the Dees are coached by Oakleigh Chargers mainman and Demons development coach Mick Stinear. In the lead-up to the game, both teams have had starkly contrasting results. In Melbourne’s practice match at Ikon Park against Carlton on 21 January, in front of a healthy crowd, the Dees went down 8.4(52) to 1.3(9). But despite the 43-point loss, vice-captain Melissa Hickey said there were plenty of positives to take out of the hit-out. “It was definitely a quick game, and it gave us a real taste of what 16-a-side is probably going to
bring the AFLW season,” she told the media. “There are heaps and heaps of things for us to work on.” In Brisbane’s pre-season hit-out, they recorded a 16-point win against the GWS Giants in Coorparoo, as the Lions dominated in wet conditions. It’s going to be an exciting spectacle, with a big crowd set to turn out in the south-east, cheering on the Demons, in the historic debut round of AFLW.

AFLW season kicks off By Nick Creely With the AFLW set to kick off on Friday night, a host of locals are set to feature at the elite level for the first time. In what has been an AFL breeding ground of women’s players, the Cranbourne VFL side is set to have seven players feature heavily throughout the tournament, while the entirety of the south-east will be represented by a total of 11 players. Bianca Jakobsson, taken at selection three in the draft, will be a vital player for Carlton this season; while other lo-
cal Carlton recruits, such as Danielle Hardiman (pick 35), who is a key player for the Blues as a defender and Breann Moody (pick 67), are exciting, raw and looking to make a splash on the competition. Bears keep up pace By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 8 (Day 2) MORDIALLOC v BERWICK Berwick remain well and truly in the race for the Turf 1 flag, knocking off Mordialloc at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. Chasing 102 from last week, the Bears were in trouble with four early wickets, before Jarrod Armitage (43) and Adam Watson (40) steered the ship and managed to help them pass the total. The Bears were eventually bowled out for 181, with Stuart Squires (4/40) toiling hard as he always does. With the prospect of outright highly unlikely, but not impossible, the Bloodhounds went in to face the music once again for 30 overs. And the mindset of the batsmen was clear from the outset, with the Bloodhounds opting to stone-wall the innings and prevent any further damage. Eventually the game ended with the Bloodhounds on 1/38 off 30.1 overs. With the top-four race so tight, any wins or losses can be disastrous, and despite it being just a blip on the radar, Springvale South would be disappointed to have not chased down a manageable total against Buckley Ridges. After the Bucks gave the Bloods 192 for victory, it seemed the home side would have no trouble reaching the total with plenty of overs to spare, reaching 3/115 at one point. But a stunning middle-order collapse, mostly at the hands of Luke Fletcher (4/28), who was the star throughout, saw the Bloods all-out for 176. The clash between Dandenong West and Parkfield was a fantastic contest, with the men from the West claiming the chocolates.
Chasing 124, the Westers pushed it until the very end, despite a stellar spell from Matthew Aslett (5/35), and eventually got there before being bowled out for 126. Hasindu Waduge (2/14) was also important with the ball, while exciting youngster Ethan French (27) top-scored in the thriller. Cranbourne was completely dominant, outplaying Heinz-Southern Districts in a critical top-four clash at Casey Fields. After the Eagles posted 220 last week, the Cobras always had a huge task ahead of them. And the Eagles are the premiers for a reason, with the trio of Spoljaric, Cameron Kelly and Chasemore ensuring the Cobras were rattled. Pressure was ever-present, with the Cobras lacking their natural flair from the outset. The Cobras were trundled out for 114 off just 65.1 overs, with Spoljaric taking two, Chasemore picking up a couple, Kelly taking two and Tim Fathers grabbing a few himself. Hallam-Kalora Park have flexed their very strong muscles, dominating proceedings against an improved Narre Warren outfit at Sweeney Reserve. Chasing 214, the Hawks got their three wickets down in the 79th over, and despite the Magpies showing plenty of spirit, class over-shone. Ben Hillard (72), Corey Booth (53 not out) and Leigh Booth (42) combined brilliantly, using class instead of power to graft away at the total. Janaka Liyanabadalge (1/57 off 27 overs) was a constant force, and continues his stellar season.

Already well ahead in the game in the pursuit of 161, the Dingoes quickly knocked off the runs in no time, and declared on 6/163. Star opener Matthew Hague (47) continues to perform at a high standard, while a raft of other Dingoes chimed in with some handy runs.
Jurgen Andersen (4/59) continues to be a beacon for the Maroons, bowling virtually all of the first session. The Maroons then batted out the entire day, finishing on 6/107, and virtually closing the curtain on playing finals this season. Jasenthuliyana Chathuranga (5/54) was stellar in the second-dig for the Dingoes, while Clayton McCartney found some quality time in the middle, making 34.
Audition for new anthem It has changed its name and is now going to change its song and the Casey Demons are looking for a talented young local to help record its latest piece of history. The Casey Scorpions aligned themselves further with the Melbourne Football Club late last year and took on the name of Casey Demons. Football club president David Dillon said the club was now keen to add a personal touch to its new anthem. “As a part of the rebranding of Casey’s VFL Club, a new anthem that references the Casey Demons is to be recorded and the club wants to include the talented vocalists in Casey,” Dillon said. “Casey boasts some wonderful talent and none more than our vocalists. Casey Demons applauds our performing artists and wish to offer an opportunity that will be a legacy that is long lasting.” Casey Demons are launching a competition to provide an opportunity for a talented Casey resident or residents to audition and the winning finalist then record and launch the new Casey Demons Anthem. With the game seemingly slipping away from CaseySouth Melbourne on Saturday, as Greenvale pair Nathan Massey (44) and Kyle Adams (31) built up a strong partnership, the overall feeling was that this crucial result would go against them. At 6/112, with just 10 runs needed from the Roos to claim first-innings points, a piece of magic was needed.
“We were trying a couple of different things - we went back to Rosey (Brendan Rose) and Lambey (Nathan Lambden), and both guys delivered well Sperlo (Lachlan Sperling) took a really hot catch at short cover and that got us going,” coach Brian Keogh explained. “Lambey then took a blinder caught-and-bowled, a onehander at a critical time, and the score was about 8/116 when he took that catch - the last batter came in and hit the first ball through slips and that took them to 9/120, then Rosey got through Smilie and that was it, he knocked him over. But if not for a gritty performance late in the Swans’ firstinnings, it is unlikely that they
would have been in the position they currently sit. “Both Jackson Fry (3 off 50 balls) and Leigh Diston (28 not out) were outstanding - we were 9/80 odd I think - not only did they put on 30-odd for the last wicket, but it was the way they went about it - to be fair Greenvale bowled well, and we didn’t bat well - Jacko and Diston were positive and incredibly determined, they changed the momentum for sure, and we went into the break knowing if we bowled well we were a chance,” Keogh said. Doig web traps the Gulls By David Nagel The word genius gets saved for a very select few but Cardinia (0/4) off-spinner Dwayne Doig (5/52 off 37) may well have done enough to join the Einsteins and Newtons of this world after another masterclass against Tooradin (135) on Saturday. OK maybe Doigy’s achievements pale ever so slightly in comparison to those famous names mentioned earlier, but the Bulls champion is building a reputation that is sure to last a lifetime. He has quite simply mastered his craft, and was at it again, bowling the Bulls into an enviable position against the Seagulls at E Gunton Oval. Opening the bowling, his first challenge was to lock horns with Seagulls’ gun Tom Hussey (2). Challenge accepted ... challenge won! Doig then dialled in the radar, challenging the likes of Russ Lehman (31), Cal O’Hare (22) and Josh Lownds (23) who had to take on the Hussey role - but none accepted. The Seagulls slipped into a
run-rate of less than two per over as Doig, Trav Wheller (2/25 off 18) and Kim Bentick (3/18 off 8) took the pace off the ball and bowled beautifully to well-set fields. Fellow premiership aspirants beware -this is the challenge to be confronted, come finals time. “We don’t have that many pace options, so we’re more than happy to throw our spinners the ball, bowl slow from both ends and see where that takes us,” said Bulls’ keeper and president Luke Turner. “Doigy’s just doing what Doigy does, but we need to make sure we’re bowling tight from both ends in the finals.” But this one’s not over yet with the Bulls stumbling with modest run-chases in the past. They made 126 chasing 158 in the 2014 grand final and made the exact same total when chasing a modest 179 the following year. The Bulls will begin their chase in front of a big crowd expected at the club’s Sponsors and Life Members Day. Pakenham (1/11) is well on the way to spoiling Kooweerup’s
(179) party after Tom Tyrrell (4/31) and Zac Chaplin (4/37) poured on the pressure at Denhams Road. Tyrrell was at his giantslaying best, removing the four Demons guns this season, Chris O’Hara (41), Mark Cooper (31), Ben Spicer (0) and Jess Mathers (0), while Chaplin cleaned up a very dangerous-looking lower order. Paul Bright (38) and Matt Davey (25)- who was celebrating his 25th season of senior cricketmade valuable contributions for the Dees. In other games, Emerald (172) skipper A.J. Walker (52) knocked in his third half-century for the season as the Bombers gained early momentum against Upper Beaconsfield (5/75), while Pakenham Upper/Toomuc (185) looks set for its second win after a late fightback against Merinda Park (4/24). Bash honours our fallen warriors By Nick Creely For every ball sent down on Australia Day, Sean Mulqueen was paying tribute to an Australian soldier tragically killed in Afghanistan. Sean, a veteran himself of six years in the Australian Army as part of the Royal Australian Engineers, has seen many of his mates sadly killed in combat. But now Sean, back living in Australia with his wife and family, is ensuring that the lives lost will not be forgotten, establishing a special event on Australia Day, which he is hoping will become a marquee fixture for locals in the south-east area for years to come. The 42 Ball Bash, a cricket tournament which is similar to Twenty20 cricket but only has 42 balls per side, recognises and pays tribute to the lives lost in Afghanistan, which currently sits at 42, and the veterans who come home and live with the experiences of war. “The 42 Ball Bash was put together to raise money for the '42 for 42 and Diggers Rest - A Soldiers retreat', with both organisations honouring the soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Afghanistan war, as well as all their families and other returned veterans,” Sean said. “The proceeds from the day will be going to the projects and the programs in helping returned veterans and veteran families. “We used the cricket tournament to be the first fundraiser for the year; it was an idea that came together with Silvio Marinelli, Joe Hackett and Brad Mcdonald.” The event, which was held at Casey Fields in Cranbourne, was a raging suc-

boys again,” Sean explained. “They have been involved with some other events in helping with returned veterans. “The idea is to get veterans and families to know they can have a bad and sad day and can remember the tough times, however life goes on and it takes one step at a time as well as a little bit of weight of our shoulders. “When we started planning the 42 Ball Bash we wanted to keep the same mindset and get everyone to start having fun. “We can always remember, but it doesn’t need to be sad and sombre moments, we can make it fun and enjoyable. “That’s why the idea of a

Parkers’ week of woes HAMPTON PARK BOWLS There are only four games to go in midweek pennant and the season cannot finish quickly enough for Hampton Park’s Division 1. Another loss against Berwick on Tuesday added to the misery. Val Moore, Christine Hendrie, Helen Lambert and Shane Collins led with two ends to go but faltered and lost 21-24. Neville Hendrie, Denise Eastick, John Nunan and Andrew Brandolin just missed a win 15-24 and Janice Collins, Toni Sutton, Ron Beverley and Geoff Ladner had a bad day going down 7-35. Hampton Park (1) 0-43 lost to Berwick (3) 16-83. Division 3, are looking good. Playing at Dandenong Club, they won all rinks for another win. Jim Westwell, Stuart Tokely, Peter Hayden and Heather Naismith led all day for a 25-15 win, joined by Jen Sherry, Ann Westwell, Ian Kitt and Ray Wood (22-14). Rhonda Diaper, June Damon, Brian Diaper and Geoff Ampt had a close one, scraping home by one shot 22-21. Hampton Park (2) 16-69 defeated Dandenong Club (3) 0-50 Saturday was another so close
day, with all teams losing by less than 10 shots each. Division 1 at home against Burwood Districts, won three rinks but went down overall by five shots. Shane Hardy, Andrew Brandolin, Ian Bartlett and Warwick Hardy won 20-16, while two rinks won by a single shot each, John Wright, Christine Hendrie, Clint Mills and Shane Collins (19-18) and Mark Paton, John Nunan, Chris Barnes and Steve Barnes (17-16). Geoff Ladner, Sean McDonald, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm lost 12-23). Hampton Park (1) 6-68 lost to Burwood Districts (1) 12-73. Division 4 were at Narre Warren and played a game of two halves. The Parkers easily won the first half to the afternoon tea break, then lost the second half and the overall game by seven shots. Vince Kovacic, Gavin Wilson, Rob Woff and Ron Beverley won 23-16 and Val Moore, Janice Collins, Geoff Ampt and Neville Hendrie won 20-18. Denise Eastick, Jim Westwell, Helen Lambert and Heather Naismith (1921) and Trevor Harbright, Richard Pallett, Stan Hatch and Ken Cobden (17-31) both went down.

Cranbourne ladies blitz opposition CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne’s lady bowlers were in great form with a 39 shot win over Vermont South at home. Maree Taylor, Minnie Lamb, Kath Dudink and Freda Farrall were the big winners with a score of 31 shots to eight which made a great contribution to the winning score. All three rinks winning and maximum points gained puts Cranbourne second on the ladder. An amazing perfect eight is a rare achievement in bowls and this made the difference to winning the game against Keysborough in the open competition. Skip John McKenna and his team of Ron Shields, Lyndsay Coate and Lynne Wood were all smiles with the effort. All the good work achieved by Cranbourne midweek quickly turned around in the Saturday competition with all three sides losing. Despite an inspirational talk at the start of the game by “the General”, Barry Thomas, that seemed to get Cranbourne top side off to a great start at Keysborough, the momentum fizzled out after the tea break midway through the game and eventually all four rinks lost against the second

The second side at home were very competitive against Waverley Golf with Skip John McKenna having an outstanding week, this time with team mates Gavin Wright, Chris Griffiths and Ron Shields winning by 19 shots. Unfortunately the other three rinks lost, ultimately Cranbourne going down by seven shots was a disappointment in the end.
The third side struggled again this week and are finding it a little tough to compete at this level especially with the number of players at the club who are out due to injuries. Ladies - Side 1 Division 1 Cranbourne 74 defeated Vermont South 35 (C Wright 23-14, S Venville 20-13 and F Farrall 318). Side 2 Division 1 Open Cranbourne 63 defeated Keysborough 51 (G Dudink 21-24, J McKenna 22-13; and I Partington 20-14.) Devon Meadows Football and Netball Club is hosting a fundraiser for the family of the late Beau Miller, a champion footballer and man struck down in his prime. The Support the Millers Family Day will be held at Glover Reserve this Sunday 5 February, running from noon to 4pm, and will raise funds for Beau’s wife Steph, and children Chase and Tripp, left after Beau passed away on July 14 last year after a short battle with aggressive cancer. Tickets to the fun-filled day are $25 per adult, $15 per child or $10 for children under two-years-old. Tickets for the day include: Entry in the major raffle and door prize, unlimited kids rides, petting zoo, kids disco and prizes, kids sporting games and a live band and music all day. There will also be face painting, ballon artistry, a silent auction, market stalls, and food, drinks, alcohol and merchandise will all be available for purchase on the day.

Respect for arch-rivals By David Nagel In his role as president of the West Gippsland Cricket Association, Brett Armitage has to deal with the word respect on a weekly basis. Umpire abuse, over-the-top sledging, not playing the game in the spirit that it should be played, BA - as he is known to the local cricket community - spends too much of his time dealing with a minority who cast a shadow over the greater good of the game. But mention the words Peter Zauner and his voice sparks up, and true respect - that feeling of deep admiration for someone’s qualities, abilities and achievements - well it comes to the fore in no uncertain terms. “I rate him as one of the toughest opponents that I’ve played against, an opponent that, if you weren’t on your game, could work you out in an instant and you’d be on your way,” Armitage said last week after his Merinda Park side took on Zauner’s Devon Meadows in an E Grade clash at Lyndhurst Secondary College. “There’s only so many bowlers that you fear and I put Pete in the category of a Greg Bethune (Tooradin), a young Matt Davey (Kooweerup), Mick Whiteside (Pakenham Upper/Toomuc) and Brett Hanks from Pakenham as the best bowlers I played against. “He’s always been a tough but fair competitor and been a nice guy to boot, that’s why I and a lot of other cricketers respect Peter so highly.” At times like this it’s regrettable that all the statistical data that accompanies the modern game wasn’t available to players of this duo’s vintage. So what do we know about Peter Zauner - now in his mid-50s? We know his best days were behind him when the computer age kicked in for the 2007/08 season, but his figures from the last 10 years still make for highly impressive reading. Zauner has bowled 1778.3 overs -10,671 balls to be exact - in 134 matches during that time for a total of 305 wickets at an average 15.23. A remarkable 455 of those overs have been maidens, one every 3.9 overs. He took an incredible 53 wickets in District division in 2009/10, and has two eight-wicket hauls to his name to sit comfortably alongside 15 other five-wicket performances. His best figures of 8/31 were taken against Kilcunda Bass and his 10/43 from that game sits second behind his 11/75 taken against Tooradin in the Premier division of 2008/09. Armitage is no slouch himself, with 3143 runs coming at the elite average of 42.47, with six centuries, 19 fifties, and an amazing 878 runs in the season of 2014/15 giving credence to his ability. But it’s his respect for Peter Zauner that stands proudest of all.

Built to be big and bold By Alistair Kennedy Renault Koleos is the larger of two SUVs in the French carmaker’s Australian range, the other being the compact Captur. Koleos has been on sale here since 2008 without causing much of a ripple on the sales charts but with hopes that the recent arrival of the second-generation model and some decent marketing will attract more interest. Truly cosmopolitan, Koleos was designed in France, has a Japanesebuilt chassis and is constructed in South Korea. Australia becoming the first country, outside of its native France, to sell it. Koleos is a big, bold vehicle that’s built on the same platform as the well-established Nissan X-Trail. The front features an almost vertical grille with chromed strips that run from the headlights along the full length of the guards and all the way back to the ‘gills’ in the front guards. The centre of the grille features a large Renault diamond with another diamond at the rear between horizontal taillights. Three variants are offered. In ascended order of equipment level and price they are the quirkily named Life, Zen and Intens. The entry-level Life comes only with two-wheel drive; mid-spec Zen
also has the option of all-wheel drive; while the range-topping Intens is only AWD. Koleos Life rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, Zen and Intens each get a different design of 18-inch alloys. There’s just one powertrain, 2.5-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that generates 126 kW at 6000 revs, and 226 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm. Transmission is by a continuously variable unit. A turbo-diesel engine is expected to be added to the range later in 2017. Entry and exit is comfortable without any excessive ducking down. There’s sufficient leg, knee and headroom for three adults to travel in the back seat comfort. With two rear passengers the central armrest can be folded to provide two inbuilt drink containers. There’s a clever touch to the interior lighting with the LED able to be switched between five colours and also to be dimmed. The Intens gets a powered panoramic sunroof as standard. It’s available as an option in Zen but not offered in Life. There’s good volume of storage space with 438 litres with the rear seatbacks in place, extending to 1690 litres. All models get a one-touch folding mechanism for the rear seatbacks. Intens has an automatic bootlid

Koleos gets Renault’s latest R-Link 2 system for its infotainment technology. The premium Intens model displays onto an 8.7-inch tablet-style touchscreen with the Life and Zen getting a 7.0-inch portrait screen We felt that too many of the controls operate through the touchscreen including air conditioning temperature and fan speed adjustment. This requires too much attention to be diverted from the road, which is potentially dangerous.
There are USB ports both in the front console and the rear armrest. Bluetooth pairing is logical and quick. Surprisingly in these tech-conscious times neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto are available in any Koleos model. Life and Zen get an eight-speaker Arkamys sound system; Intens steps up to 12-speaker a Bose surroundsound system with 12 speakers, subwoofer and digital amplifier. Life has a key in ignition start/stop, Zen and Intens push button. The front seats are large, supportive and comfortable with the extra ground clearance (210 mm) in the AWD Intens providing a higher driving position and so better outward visibility. Our test was in the Koleos Intens and took in our usual mix of urban, motorway and rural conditions with an off-road diversion to see how the AWD coped. School holidays meant that our slog through Sydney’s congested roads was a little easier than normal and this combined with the high driving position and good all-round visibility meant that we escaped the city in a far more relaxed mood.
