justice system for the behaviour of the young man and said judges needed to get tougher on youth crime if things were going to change. “They need to stop giving them bail, the police have arrested this kid before and seeing the frustration on the police officers’ faces this morning, it’s heart-breaking for them,” she said. “The police do their job; they arrest and present them in front of the magistrate and they are let down by the system.” Mrs Blanch also took aim at those in charge of the youth criminal justice system and blamed them for the increase in violent youth crimes. “It’s the fault of the Victorian Attorney-General; he is the first officer

A 17-year-old boy from Cranbourne has been arrested while being treated at the Dandenong hospital, after allegedly smashing a stolen car into the back of a parked truck in Cranbourne. The youth was allegedly driving the car at dangerous speeds on a service lane of the South Gippsland Highway when he crashed just before 7.30am on Friday 20 January. This crash is the second time in three months the same boy has allegedly ended up in a car crash involving a stolen vehicle. He had previously been arrested in November 2016 for allegedly smashing a stolen car into a parked sedan at the intersection of Roberts Road and David Avenue in Cranbourne. Police confirmed he is still to be interviewed and charged for that matter, after spending four to six weeks in a rehabilitation facility and avoiding arrest since releasing himself from that facility. While he sustained serious injuries in the crash in November, he is being treated for minor injuries following the crash from 20 January. Joanne Blanch, owner of the truck that was damaged in the crash on the South Gippsland Highway, spoke of the shock of being woken to the crash. “We were woken when we heard a noise like a loud thud, and then my husband heard yelling, so went outside to find out what happened,” she said. “He opened the gate and that’s when we saw the carnage.” Mrs Blanch said she and her husband would be without income while their truck was repaired. “It’s a tray crane truck that had a new crane installed six months ago and new tyres about two months ago,” she said. “The car hit it that hard that the side wall of one of the rear tyres has split.” “It will take two weeks for assess-

Disabled can be Little Aths By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne Little Athletics is the first club in the state to offer competition to athletes with a disability. The multiclass group of athletes had their first chance to compete at the club’s meteorite gift held on Saturday 14 January. Head coach of Cranbourne Little Athletics Mark Jouvelet said the kids in the group put on a great performance in their first ever outing. “It’s the first time that category been recognised by Little Athletics Victoria,” he said. “Saturday night they got a chance to complete for medals and when they ran out there was not a dry eye in the house; one of the best community things we’ve seen for a long time.” The multiclass group of little athletes has roughly 10 participants with a range of differently abled impairments from mental disabilities to blindness. The club, with the help of volunteer Nina O’Day, has designed an athletics program for the group that allows them to participate in events that able-bodied kids do as well. “Little Athletics Victoria gave permission for the format and in particular gave licence to change the offering to be more inclusive,” Mr Jouvelet said. “We also asked parents what they wanted and incorporated that into it and went on the front foot rather than let the state body design a program that was too small.” “We wanted to make sure the kids enjoy it and it is an incredible development but just in its infancy and numbers are quite small.” While the club have been working on getting this program running for a few years, from June 2016 they got the concept off the ground, the program developed and the first meeting in October.

Ms O’Day, who has become the co-ordinator of the program, said the chance afforded to the kids has made a big difference in their lives. “It has made a huge difference in
terms of their skills and confidence and going out and giving it a go,” she said. “Some have been told they cannot do certain things and they have done those things and they celebrate everything.”
“They celebrate each other’s achievements and its beautiful and lovely to see unfold, parents are happy to see their kids do things outside of what they thought was ever possible.”

Medal for motivation By Victoria Stone-Meadows
A Beaconsfield man has had his long years of environmental work with the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens and other groups recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia. Alex Smart has been involved with preservation of the Australian environment for most of his life and said it is a great honour to receive this award on Australia Day. “I was a bit stunned and when the letter came from the Governor General but it certainly was a very pleasant surprise,” he said. “I was thrilled to bits to think I am getting recognised for my work on the environment and natural history on Australia Day because that’s really what motivates me; I am passionate about natural heritage, plants, animals, and the environment.” Mr Smart, now 78 years old, first became involved with environmental volunteer work when he was a teenager and would regularly visit the Grampians from his home in Yarraville. “I got involved with some friends who were interested in the Grampians and walking and looking at the plants and the animals,” he said. “That was what initiated my interest and my friends would point things out and ask how things work.” Since that time, Mr Smart has been involved as a volunteer with many environmental groups across Melbourne but was most heavily involved with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Cranbourne. “The Australian Plants Society and my friends from there were involved
with the Royal Botanic Garden in Cranbourne and it is an absolute gem,” he said. Mr Smart first became a committee member for the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne in 1994 and has held many volunteer roles with the gardens since. “I have been involved with that for over 20 years now, the collection of Australian plants there has won many awards and it is just wonderful to go there and help people see things and have a look. “It’s more than just the Australian Garden, though, there is a wonderful indigenous section and rare and threatened plants - it is just a thrill to see them and photograph them.” Through his involvement in the gardens and his tireless volunteer efforts, Mr Smart received the honour of having one of the plant growing houses named after him; the building is now known as Alex’s Shed. Mr Smart said he was unaware his friends had nominated him for the award but is grateful they did. “My friends nominated me and the bastards didn’t tell me,” he said. “I don’t know who all the nominations were from but it is good and I am lucky to have friends I have worked with over the years who have probably embellished what I have done.” Although stepping back from his official duties at the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens due to his age, Mr Smart’s passion for environmental preservation shows no signs of slowing. “Even in my local environment here at Beaconsfield I have things

Committee has agreed the Helmeted Honeyeater should be introduced to the Upper Beaconsfield area.” Mr Smart received a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to con-
servation and the environment and will join other awards he has won such as a Centenary Medal in 2001 and becoming an Honorary Fellow of the Metrology Society of Australia in 2003.
Donations for assistance dog giving a paws for thought A Cranbourne West family is desperately seeking help to raise funds for an assistance dog for their daughter Hayley who suffers from intellectual disabilities and mood disorders. The 11-year-old has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual development disorder, bipolar disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. She suffers severe and sometimes violent mood swings that are not only affecting her own quality of life but are causing issues with her family as well. Hayley’s mother Kerryn, who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and dysphonia which stops her from working full time, said that without the help of an assistance dog to keep Hayley under control, she doesn’t know how the family will cope. “Hayley has a history of self-destructive behaviour and having an assistance dog will mean she has a constant companion to recognise when she is having a break from reality and help to being her back,” she said.
“She was at school until March 2016 when she started making suicidal threats and self-harming at school, she was also becoming very quiet and withdrawn and pulling out her hair. “It came to a point where as family members we didn’t know what to do, we lost all our friends and everything. “My parents help but it’s a full time job caring for her.” Hayley’s father is also unable to work due to a knee operation that went septic and has left him wheelchair bound. Ms Law said she is trying to get back to work but cannot leave Hayley home alone without some form of assistance. The Law family is hoping that through a fundraising campaign Hayley can get the help she needs to be able to function better in mainstream society. “We pulled her out of school and her principal decided to sign for distance education for term four this year,” Ms Law said. “It’s heartbreaking; you’ve got to decide in a split second if is it ASD or mental illness, figure out what the trigger is, ask yourself do I medicate? Do I wait?”
“What are we meant to do for our kid? You try to be positive but it is absolutely heartbreaking.” Hayley was approved to receive an assistance dog through Dogs for Life in December 2016 but the family need to pay $30,000 for the two years of training the dog will need to help Hayley. Kerryn Law said the costs of Hayley’s therapies are already a lot for the family to bear and she is desperate to get the fundraiser off the ground to pay for the assistance dog. “It’s already the equivalent of a full mortgage repayment a month,” she said. Ms Law said having the assistance dog will mean the family will be able to move forward and help Hayley progress more effectively in her treatments. “Sometimes you just want to run but some little comment from her saying ‘I love you’ makes a big difference and you get through that day.” To help the Law family get Hayley the assistance she needs, visit www. gofundme.com/help-hayley-to-get-aservice-dog.

Vintage tractors bring the bling By Alana Mitchelson The Tooradin Tractor Pull and Car Show was on again on Saturday 21 January, with revheads and tractor enthusiasts crowding into Rutter Park Memorial Reserve for all the action. An exciting part of the local calendar, the not-for-profit event run by a committee of community-minded people featured vintage tractor pull, big rigs, Show ’n’ Shine, and a classic car and hot rod display.
Other attractions included helicopter rides, amusement rides, live music, trade stalls and food outlets. Tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of proceeds from the event were ploughed back into local clubs, schools and various charities. Tooradin Tractor Pull president Allyn Reeve said the event was “very successful” and the turn-out was what made the day great.
“We had 44 tractors all up, 24 vintage tractors gave demonstrations early on in the day and we had about 4000 people through the gates,” he said. “It’s a pretty big day for some people; some come out early and stay late. We had about 1000 people still there watching at the end of the night when we finished a bit after 10pm.” Star News Photographer Wayne Hughes went along to capture some of the day’s excitement.

Green wedge under threat A proposed Coptic church complex would be disastrous for Greater Dandenong’s green wedge, objectors say. Defenders of the South East Green Wedge secretary Barry Ross said the $4 million, 1600 square metre development at 785 Thompsons Road, Lyndhurst, would include a priests’ dwelling, sports courts, a physio clinic, horse stables, a cafe and plant nursery. “We believe that this large church with its 500seat capacity and 23 metre towers - as tall as a seven storey building - together with all the other actives would be disastrous for the green wedge,” he said. “Our green wedges, which are the lungs of Melbourne, are in danger of being chocked by churches, temples and mosques. “While our group has nothing but respect for places of worship, we believe they are out-of-place in the green wedge which is meant to be protected as an open rural landscape for agriculture, conservation and recreation. “Unfortunately, a number of religious organisations seem to have suddenly realised that it is far less expensive to locate in green wedges than the more expensive land in urban areas.” Mr Ross said Greater Dandenong Council’s Green Wedge Management Plan would “provide a green, spacious relief from surrounding urban development”. “Approval of the church complex would certainly fly in the face of this vision,” he said. “With its bulk, height and all its ‘bells and whistles’, the church complex would be completely out-of-place in the green wedge and would spoil the pleasant, open rural landscape.” Greater Dandenong Council’s planning register lists the application as “in progress”. The application also included 181 car spaces and said the centre would provide for mass during the
weekend and weekdays, Sunday school for children aged under 12, youth meetings, baptism, weddings and funerals, and yearly fates for all surrounding communities. The Journal contact Progress Planning, which submitted the application on behalf of land owners St Kyrillos and Philopatere, and was directed to Ogee Architects. “Objectors may take matters to city council and VCAT, if they wish,” director architect Youssef Gadalla said. “I am not in a position to talk about this project.”
Looking ahead, work on the roof will continue, bringing the iconic winged shape of the building to life. Exciting things are happening in the theatre with a crane soon to be loaded inside to begin the internal fit out. The first shipment will be hitting customs in the coming fortnight and once delivered to site this remarkable timber piece will be quickly put in place.

The leniency of the lower levels of justice; the affiliates; namely the “Bail Justices system” ought to be reviewed, with a series of conditions, under which “bail” will not be granted. Miscreants and terrorists have slipped through and caused wanton damage to property and life. Analysis, and cumulation, of numerous crimes, some ending in death, or injury, of innocent bystanders, or persons in the wrong place, at the wrong time, further proves that bail ought to be withheld. The CBD rampage is an act of “terror” as is evident from the ranting and raving on Facebook of the perpetrator of this dastardly act inflicted at the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, the pulsation of “our Melbourne”. Little children in the safety of prams, people happily enjoying the ambience of a stroll - the whole of Melbourne and Victoria is livid with rage and shocked beyond belief. This I believe is an aberration of the law and that the law is flawed, not ensuring the ordinary citizens the right to safety of life and property. Any violation which is an affront to the rule of law, is intrinsically a violation. I recommend zero tolerance. A) Singapore has the death sentence for violations associated with drugs. B) Proven miscreants of the law ought not to be freed on bail by bail justices. C) Proven violators whose previous, violations have been the consequence of mental illness should not be released to the community by bail justices. D) Bail Justices should agree, and uphold the recommendations, of the police authorities; because by their cumulated experience, know that the potential for repeat violations by criminals is likely. E) The rampant disrespect of the law by marauders, who barge into homes and steal. F) The recent wave of break-ins into jewellery stores and homes, points to perhaps a schemed and planned effort to inflict an atmosphere of terror which tantamounts to“ treason” and calls for firmer action. G) Even graffitti scrawlers should be penalised with long, extended hours of clean up rather than being wastefully incarcerated. Penalties for graffitti ought to be reviewed. Leniency has been abused as is evident by the spate of unsightly graffitti. Thus far it has not taken racist overtones, this will come if not stopped, or abated. Let the home owner, or shop keeper, have the right to take appropriate action, in the name of self-defence, even to the point of using a gun, or cudgel, and that death, or maiming, of the criminal be judged as self-defence, not punishable by law. A clear message should be sent out to all that the law is not an ass, to be sneered at, that the law has teeth, and politicians are no more effete, and helpless. Don’t sacrifice us An open letter to Casy Council from the residents of Berwick Springs Estate: Dear Casey Council, You know that we found out by accident that our beautiful tree-lined bluestone entrance, our walking paths, and mature trees at Berwick Springs would be sacrificed due to Alira’s developer wanting access to Greaves Road and this required a massive new roundabout. This was terribly underhanded. When you discussed this intersection with the developer and the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) you did not think that Berwick Springs residents would mind having 50-60 metres of their estate taken without consultation or community discussion, while the developer was allowed to not have to forgo one centimetre of their land. You were awfully wrong and seriously out of touch with community sentiment. When you created amendment C188 to the planning scheme you did not think to include the new proposed roundabout because the amendment, by law, had to be advertised and take community submissions. This was a careless mistake. When you and the VPA designed this intersection you thought Berwick Springs residents would not notice that the 10-metre roundabout would now become a multi-lane 50-metre roundabout and you failed to com-

When Berwick Springs residents asked for information, documentation, and evidence that you had consulted the community, as it is your legal obligation, you did not think it was a problem to refer us to the Berwick Springs Wetland Plan that has nothing to do with the proposed roundabout and you still you cannot provide evidence of consultation. Intentionally sending us on wild goose chase for every skerrick of information. Your persistent misdirection is deplorable. You remain insistent that this is the responsibility of the VPA and you have misdirected us to Melbourne Water and to VicRoads, continuing to claim that this issue is the responsibility of those authorities/agencies, not your own. All three authorities/agencies have confirmed this to be a matter for council. You are so obviously wrong and in an utter state of denial. You did not foresee that existing residents, who dutifully pay their council rates, would be annoyed, upset and most disappointed that you would side with and support Alira’s developer, instead of standing up for our rights and for the protection of our current amenity. This was cold-hearted and completely out of touch. Even now, you do not seem to think that there is an issue in having Alira’s developer, who has a clear economic self-interest, create a new proposal for the intersection, after Judith Graley MP and Luke Donnellan MP had to intervene due to the failures in the

process. You also do not seem to think that there is an issue in tabling the revised proposal to council in February 2017, without prior community consultation. This is not in line with your own community consultation charter. You are a repeat offender and a bad learner. You have become very defensive and at times aggressive when residents ask pertinent questions that seek to establis h the sequence of events, whether due process was followed, and who is accountable. You have been hostile and sunk to personal attacks on residents’ representatives. This attitude is unwarranted and highly unprofessional. To correct these wrongs: * You must listen to the residents; * You must inform the developer, as it is right to do, to take responsibility for the full costs of their development by putting the new roundabout on their land as part of their new estate; * You must leave our 20-year-old established estate entrance untouched; * You must consult the community prior to making any changes and take the community feedback fully and wholeheartedly; * You must take responsibility for your past actions and admit your mistakes so that we can move on; * You must stop pointing the finger at others and turn it around and point it at yourself, and; * You must stop the hostility and personal attacks to our representatives. Lengthy jail term looms By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man accused of threats to kill, robbery and trying to stab a stranger with a broken beer bottle while on bail has protested to a magistrate that he was facing only “petty charges”. Ardem Aldobasic, 22, of Springvale, had been told by judge Pauline Spencer in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 January that he was facing a lengthy jail term after pleading guilty to a recent two-month crime spree. “These are petty charges. You seen my priors?” the previously jailed Aldobasic said. Ms Spencer told Aldobasic that the charges were not a joke. “That’s part of your issue. You’re not understanding how serious this is.” Among the offences was crashing a stolen car at highspeed soon after swiping a slab of Bundy from a Fountain Gate bottle shop drive through about 1.20pm on 27 October. Aldobasic stole the car from a Springvale home the day before and drove it in a petrol drive-off in Hampton Park and the bottle-shop heist. After taking the Bundy slab, Aldobasic drove through

the Fountain Gate precinct at a “fast rate of speed” and tyres screeching without slowing down for two speed humps, the court was told. Seconds later, the car crashed into a light pole on CranbourneNarre Warren Road. Aldobasic was treated in hospital for a cut to his face from the crash. He recorded a 0.037 bloodalcohol reading as well as levels of cannabis in his blood. At the time, Aldobasic was a disqualified driver and was failing to comply with his community-work corrections order. He was bailed and then a month later, threatened to stab and kill a stranger in Douglas Street, Noble Park. He pulled out a beer bottle, smashed it on the pavement and tried to stab the victim in the stomach with the broken tophalf of the bottle. On 13 November, he threatened to kill a female relative as he broke into her house to search for his alcohol “stash”. As he left the aggravated burglary, he picked up her small dog and threw it over her neighbour’s fence. Police also seized an imitation sawn-off .22 rifle in Aldobasic’s boarding-house bed-
room, and charged him over the attack and robbery of a man on a Springvale street in December. During the attack, Aldobasic demanded the man’s cigarette, pushed him backwards over a metre-high fence and tried to strike him to the face. Aldobasic told the court it was a “joke” he was charged with robbery for stealing tissues from the man’s jeans pocket. Defence lawyer Arend Slink told the court his client had alcohol and cannabis issues, but didn’t concede a mental health link to his offending. Aldobasic was “simply not able to come up with any explanation for his behaviour”, Mr Slink said. The court was told Aldobasic had been admitted for cannabis and ice-induced psychoses twice since 2015. Prior to sentencing, Ms Spencer ordered a Forensicare psychiatric assessment of Aldobasic to understand his offending, noting he was alcoholaffected for several offences. She said his jail term would top the 42 days in pre-sentence detention, and would likely be followed by a community corrections order.

Funding for islands of hope set for the streets of Casey Young Pacific Islanders in Casey and Dandenong will receive a leg up through a new pilot program. The State Government announced $600,000 for the Young Pasifika Program on Friday 20 January. Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott said it was an unfortunate truth that youths in certain communities were at greater risk of dropping out of school or work, engaging in risky behaviour and suffering racism and discrimination.
“That’s why it’s so important for us to offer targeted support to ensure every Victorian - regardless of where they come from - gets a fair go,” he said. Experienced youth outreach workers will work directly with the youths and reconnect them to school, jobs and training. The workers will help to engage young people through existing community networks and relationships such as sport, churches and local government programs.

Youth Affairs Minister Jenny Mikakos said the program would improve the social, community and economic opportunities for young Pacific Islanders. The program will initially be delivered in Casey and Wyndham, then extended into Dandenong and Brimbank. The program will also fund a project co-ordinator to work closely with local organisations and networks to help improve links between support services and deliver a co-ordinated response.

Singing out for choir recruits Community driven choir the Voices of Casey is currently looking to recruit new members, with the positions of tenors and basses in high demand. Directed by the Founding Musical Director of the School of Hard Knocks Dr Jonathon Welch AM, Voices of Casey is a not for profit organisation that works to promote excellence in music making. Providing pleasure and entertainment for both members and audiences, Voices of Casey incorporates a range of musical
styles fused together with the enjoyable movements of choralography. The group, which provides members with the opportunity to interact socially with those who have common interests and goals, additionally helps to raise funds for various charities through concerts and performances. Voices of Casey is a nonauditioned choir and anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to join.
Beginning 6 February, the group will rehearse each Monday night from 7pm until 9.30pm at Fiddlers Green Retirement Village in Berwick. Two new early learning centres in Clyde North and Cranbourne opened their doors for the first time on Monday 16 January and after their first week have been deemed a success. The new YMCA centres opened up on Heather Grove in Clyde North and on the corner of Sassafras Place and Wheelers Park Drive in Cranbourne North. What sets these centres apart from many others in the region is they are attached to established primary schools. This affiliation with established schools in the area means kids with siblings are not too far
separated from family and the transition from early learning to primary school is much easier. YMCA area manager Lucy Stabb said the first week of the new centres shows great possibilities for early learning in the City of Casey. “The first week has gone really well,” Ms Stabb said. “We’ve been really excited to see children and educators using the spaces and every day our numbers are growing with more and more children being booked in.” The new centres have mainly attracted local two and threeyear-olds, but are still taking bookings for many age groups. Ms Stabb said because of

Learning to help stay in school By Casey Neill Hundreds of children in Casey and Greater Dandenong need help to stay in school. The Smith Family is appealing for 6000 new Learning for Life sponsors across the country in the lead-up to school returning for the year. The program supports 1017 students across Greater Dandenong and Casey where a dedicated team of co-ordinators works directly with students, parents and schools and provides links to essential services. Sponsors also fund text books, uniforms and other equipment and access to The Smith Family’s learning support and mentoring programs. The Smith Family’s Victorian general manager Anton Leschen said his team was experiencing an influx of calls from desperate parents. “The truth is the costs of a child’s educational essentials are out of reach for many disadvantaged families,” he said. The independent children’s
education charity priced school essentials for one primary school-aged child at $2400 per year. “When a child doesn’t have the basics they need for school they can feel different and isolated,” Mr Leschen said. “The consequences can be serious - they can become disengaged over time and are at risk of dropping out of school. “And that’s a real concern because we know that education is a pathway out of poverty. “If we want to prevent disadvantaged children from the lifelong effects of hardship, the best thing we can do is support them to succeed at school and complete their education.” The Smith Family already supports 33,000 children across the country but wants to add a further 24,000 by 2020. “Many people associate child sponsorship with thirdworld aid, but the reality is there are 1.1 million children and young people living in poverty right here in Australia,” Mr Leschen said.
“We are talking about Australian children who are growing up in low income homes where affording life’s basics is a daily struggle. “These children are likely to live in single parent homes and their families may also be dealing with long-term illness, disability, limited education or unemployment. “For just $1.60 per day, child sponsors will give a disadvantaged child practical, long-term assistance that they need to attend school, engage in their learning and complete Year 12.” Figures show that 84.2 per cent of Learning for Life graduates who left in Years 10 to 12 were engaged in work and/or study 12 months after leaving the program. CCTV denied By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne West man has denied he was present during an alleged aggravated burglary and throttling of his ex-partner in her Lynbrook home - despite contradictory CCTV footage on 10 January. The man claimed he was at Eildon at the time and his car was not driveable but police asserted the vehicle was captured on nearby CCTV around the time of the assault, a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing was told on 20 January. Police informant Acting Sergeant Peter Brereton told the court the man - previously found guilty of family violence against the same victim - defied a full intervention order barring him from any contact. The woman claimed the accused broke into the house and placed his hands around her throat, tripped her onto her back and continued to throttle her. He then allegedly grabbed her arm, struck her four times to the left side of her face and screamed: “Why do you ignore

me? Why do you send me insane?” One of the young children Facebook messaged her grandmother and phoned her mother’s partner for help. The victim was left with visible bruises to her upper arm, neck and legs, the court was told. The man was facing four outstanding charges of contravening an intervention order with intent to harm and persistent breaches of the order against the same victim, the court was told. The intervention order was served in July after he was charged over grabbing the expartner’s hair and threatening to “snap her neck” in front of one of her children in their car. She requested the man to leave her, and he replied: “Not without f***ing you up first.” He was fined and convicted over the matter at Frankston Magistrates’ Court in November. At the Dandenong bail hearing, the man told the court that
the victim made up the claims due to him “seeing another girl”. “I wasn’t at her house at all. She’s been constantly contacting me. “I’m a good person who’s basically had a rough time. “I don’t think it would be the wrong thing to let me go with my parents (on bail).” His mother told the court the man was “not well” with depression and anxiety, and had been living with her and her husband for the past six months. “We are his support. It’s better he’s home with (us).” Magistrate Lance Martin advised the man and his mother not to argue against the case’s facts without a lawyer present but noted the facts were in dispute. Mr Martin said that the man failed to show cause for release on bail, noting police feared he was likely to re-offend. The accused was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 25 January.

Marijuana plants seized By Victoria Stone-Meadows Almost 100 marijuana plants have been seized from a commercial drug trafficking enterprise in Cranbourne after police raided a Normanby property on Thursday 19 January. Police raided the property on the back of a drugs, poisons, and
controlled substances search warrant where they found 91 plants and a sophisticated hydroponic set-up. Along with the plants, police found an air rifle, two .22 calibre long arm rifles, and a large quantity of ammunition. Three people face charges as
a result of the raid including a 60-year-old man, a 54- year-old man and a 26-year-old of unknown gender. The two older males face a number of criminal charges including cultivating a commercial quantity of a controlled substance and firearms offences.

PARK HARKS BACK TO HICKS HICKS Reserve, the new neighbourhood park at Timbertop Estate, Officer, opened last Friday, with Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen and the Hicks family performing the official ribbon cutting. After months of careful planning, the eagerly awaited park commenced construction in early 2016. It was named after the former owners of the land, the Hicks family, who were early pioneers in the Officer area. They used the land for dairy farming, apple orchards and beef cattle. In 2003 Parklea purchased the land from the Hicks family, with Timbertop Estate launching in 2012. Timbertop is now home to around 700 people with over 250 homes occupied. Members of the Hicks family were guests of honour at the opening with local MPs and Cardinia Shire councillors also in attendance. Special guests enjoyed food and coffee from the Timber Mill Cafe. Parklea Founder, Andrew Facey and Mayor Owen gave speeches, commenting on how the park honours the historic land and the positive impact it will have in bringing the community together. Mayor Owen and the Hicks family even had a turn on the giant slide. The two-hectare reserve is located in the heart of Timbertop, on the corner of Timbertop Boulevard and Goldsborough Drive. There’s something for everyone including beautiful walking tracks with native planting, a lookout area, playground and giant slide for the kids, picnic area, and a large kickabout area (under construction). What’s on Inspiring Seniors to become tech savvy Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) is excited to offer free and fun technology classes in Italian and Chinese this year. The sessions are for seniors with little to no technology experience to help them gain new skills, confidence, and increase their participation in the digital community. Tech Savvy Seniors, a free program running successfully nationwide, is supported by Telstra, the Victorian State Government and Seniors Card Victoria. Feedback from more than 100 participants from the Library’s English sessions last year was excellent, prompting the corporation to expand into other languages. ■Five weekly sessions for Italian-speaking seniors will be held at Cranbourne Library commencing 23 February, while Endeavour Hills Library is the venue for Chinese sessions, commencing 20 February. Each session runs for up to two and a half hours and topics will introduce participants to computers, the internet, email, social media and iPads. Three times the effort By David Nagel The pieces of the puzzle are all coming together for Berwick youngster Rebecca Henderson - a splashing, pedalling and running machine. Already a member of the Triathlon Victoria Development Program which provides athletes with an avenue to state and national representation, the 15-year-old could quite easily have spent the summer resting on her laurels. But that’s not the way this young lady thinks. Instead she has spent the summer racking up podium finishes in open water swims, winning the 10km Victorian State Championship at Williamstown in December and qualifying for this weekend’s Australian Championships in Adelaide. Henderson will compete in both the 7.5km and 5km races at Adelaide’s Brighton Beach from 27 to 28 January.
And the Casey TigerSharks member will head into the championships in red-hot form. She has competed in open water swims around the bay and along the coast with stunning results coming her way. She won both the Mentone Open Water Swim and the Danger 1000 at Torquay, finished second in the Point Leo Swim Classic and the Rip View Swim Classic at Point Lonsdale, and finished third in the Rock 2 Ramp at Anglesea. She was also the overall winner of the Surf ‘n’ Turf category at Anglesea for the combined run and swim. And, swimming aside, it really has been a case of learning how to walk before she could run. As a 13-year-old she won gold medals in the walk at the Australian Junior and Victorian Little Athletics Championships before turning those small steps
into big ones. Running soon became a passion, then the swimming, with cycling the final frontier for a girl who has her sights set on the stars. Her talent was spotted quickly - with Triathlon Victoria selecting her for a development program and in only her fifth race, Henderson booked her place on the School Sports Victoria triathlon team. “We’d done a few triathlons before but it was just for fun and then we started taking it seriously,” Henderson said. “Someone told us about the trials for the development squad then we went and I got in. “I like that there’s swimming and running together and I like the bike, it’s pretty good now ... it’s great that there’s the three (sports) and not just one.” The pieces of the puzzle are all coming together for the Berwick College student.

Cranbourne Turf Club recognised half a century of service, not only to racing locally but to the community as a whole, with the presentation of life memberships to long-serving committee members Geoff Whiffen and Garry Sidwell at last Friday night’s race meeting. Whiffen, the current chairman, has served on the committee for 30 years and Sidwell had a considerable stint as vicechairman during his 20-year tenure. Chief executive Neil Bainbridge led a chorus of praise for the two men, pointing out that they had not only taken a keen interest in the racing club, but the recreation reserve precinct as well. He said they were both heavily involved in moulding a master plan for the racing precinct. They join a select group of life members of the turf club, two of whom - long-time secretary-manager Yvonne Blackwood and chairman Robin Daley joined the celebration. The only two other living life members - John Finning and Dr Sam Birman - were apologies. Whiffen joined the turf club committee on 27 October 1987 and was immediately appointed to the Racecourse Development Sub-committee. He was already on the recreation reserve committee of management and has been chairman for the past 20 years. Whiffen has been a director of Trios since 2008 and is the
current chairman of that facility - a joint venture of the turf, harness and greyhound boards. “Geoff has hardly missed a meeting in his 30 years and in October 2012 the committee saw fit to appoint him as chairman of the club,” Bainbridge said. “People wouldn’t realise the number of hours he puts in to this place. He has a passion for this precinct and for Cranbourne in general.” Garry Sidwell joined the committee on 26 June 1996, replacing the former chairman John Finning. On the agenda that day was the construction of a ladies jockeys room and Wendy Kelly, the Group 1 winning trainer of Bon Hoffa, applied to train on the track. At that same meeting, the turf club moved to approach the other two codes about the prospect of a joint gaming venue. “Garry is always here first for meetings,” Bainbridge said. “Along with Geoff, he has played a big part in moulding the master plan for the racing complex.” Daley said the club had come a long way in the past 30 years. “Back then we had a gravel road to the course, you would come in from the highway and we parked the cars in the centre of the track.” Sidwell said it had been a privilege to work with such a diverse committee. “That’s why we are success-
ful, because we are diverse.” He paid tribute to “the love of my life, Robyn, who has been understanding and supportive for 46 years and many more to come”. Whiffen described his association with the club as a labour of love. “It’s been a big part of our family life,” he explained. “(Wife) Noelene’s mum has attended 50 Cranbourne Cups and (son) Paul could read a racebook before any other book. We love the club. “It’s been a pleasure to have met so many great people.” He mentioned Elaine Robinson and her late husband Dennis, also a life member, and their long association with the Williams family. Fittingly, champion jockey Craig Williams won the race named in Whiffen’s honour on the impressive Godolphin first starter Raptor. Williams made sure he popped up to the committee room to wish the two new life members well. “Cranbourne is very close to my heart,” he said. “I won a cup here on Dad’s horse as an apprentice, so my family liked me… at least for two nights,” he smiled. “Racing has taken me all over the world and to win a race named after Geoff Whiffen is a great privilege. It’s special every time I get to come home. “Cranbourne is a very progressive club.”

Swans storm up the ladder By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER REVIEW - ROUND 14 (DAY 2) In the space of just five matches, Casey-South Melbourne has lifted itself from cellar-dweller to a legitimate finals' threat, and on Saturday, the inspiring performance against powerhouse Fitzroy-Doncaster at Casey Fields was yet another thrilling chapter to a remarkable resurrection. First it was Luke Manders, who struck a wonderfully compiled maiden century last week, but now, Brendan Rose has taken his game to another level, taking 5/75 as the Lions were bowled out for 284, still 22-runs shy of victory. It was the perfect start for the Swans, as speedster Nathan Lambden (1/41) and Rose broke through early, but a series of slow and grinding partnerships ensured the Lions would allow themselves a chance to advance later in the day. With perennial run-machines Peter Dickson (67) and Lloyd Mash (87) putting on over 140 runs, all-rounder Dylan Hadfield (1/38) provided the moment of magic, dismissing the dangerous Dickson, before only a few overs later, Rose cracked the game open by removing Mash. It was then that the Swans found their killer instinct, and when Leigh Diston took a wonderful catch to end the game and Trent Lawford’s (40) resistance, the Swans erupted with joy, knowing that yet another scalp has been taken. And exciting quick Jackson Fry (2/17), who played a vital role with his line, length and aggression, said the win was huge for the club, its finals

DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 8 (Day 1) Twin fifties to Matt Chasemore (55) and Steven Spoljaric (51) have rescued Cranbourne from a horror start to Heinz-Southern Districts. Winning the toss and batting, the Eagles couldn’t have scripted a more disastrous start, with Lucas Ligt (0) brilliantly caught in slips by Kaushalya Weeraratne and Brandon Tyzzer (3) run out in brilliant fashion by Lee Brown. To rub salt into the wounds, Jordan Cleland (5) was then caught behind off the bowling of Weeraratne (1/42), to leave the Eagles hanging by a thread at 3/14. But the dynamic legends Cheeks and Spoljaric battled it out, putting on an 89-run stand to keep the Cobras at bay. When Chasemore was eventually dismissed at 4/141, Luke Kerford, playing his first Turf 1 match this season, struck an impressive 39 to lift the Eagles to 220 by stumps. Lee Brown (2/47) was important with his tweakers, while Weeraratne and Michael Davies (1/40) were electric with the new ball. Rajith Jayathunga has crunched an attacking 83 to lift Buckley Ridges to a competitive 191 against powerhouse Springvale South. In a potentially season-defining clash for the Bucks, in which their finals hopes may hang on the balance against
a highly powered opposition, they dug deep and found a way to keep the Bloods sweating. The Bloods were led well by Rajith Priyan (3/32), Tim Ford (2/35) and Craig Slocombe (3/19) with the ball, who all bowled tidily. Slocombe in particular has been extraordinary since his five-wicket-haul in Round 5 against Dandy West, bowling his tweakers to great effect once again, bowling 13 overs in another wonderful display by the DDCA legend Narre Warren have set themselves up for one serious tilt at a major scalp, having their finest day of the season against the ladder-leaders Hallam-Kalora Park. There has been very little to cheer about, with outright losses plaguing a season full of departures and uncompetitive performances for the Magpies. It’s been an impressive turnaround for Dingley, who are in the box seat to secure a secondconsecutive victory, after a solid day of work against North Dandenong at Lois Twohig. And the Dingoes have started brightly with the blade, with star opener Matthew Hague (30 not out) and Ryan McLean (32) leaving them at 1/63 at stumps, eyeing off another impressive win. Fourteen wickets have tumbled as Mordialloc and Berwick battle out a tough clash at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. In what is likely to be one of the most vital matches of the season, the Bloodhounds were rolled for 101, with James Wilcock (5/32) starring with the ball once again and Jarrod Armitage (2/25) providing great support. In reply, the Bears are 4/59 after batting a couple of hours late in the day. In another-wicket frenzy, cellar-dweller sides Parkfield and Dandenong West are locked in a close battle at Greaves Reserve. Matt’s major milestone By David Nagel Kooweerup champion Matt Davey will celebrate a remarkable milestone on Australia Day today when the Demons take on Pakenham in a WGCA blockbuster at Denhams Road. The legendary all-rounder will celebrate 25 years of senior cricket -and about 400 games- when the top-two teams collide in a game that will have a huge bearing on the destination of this year’s flag. It’s rather ironic really, with Davey having a huge influence on the destiny of many premierships in the past. Uncompromising, ruthless, but very fair, Davey has played a key role in eight premierships with the Demons since his under-12 debut as a seven year-old almost 30 years ago. He took 5/7 in just his second game ... and has been influencing cricket matches ever since. This game, which will be completed on Saturday 4 February, coincides with another great contest between third and fourth on the ladder when Tooradin makes the trip to Cardinia. Round 12, the return of 80-over two-day cricket, the top-four do battle, the celebration of a club icon - homeand-away cricket just doesn’t get any
better than this! The run home to this year’s premiership -it begins now. The Lions ended Kooweerup’s dream of going back-to-back-to-back last year in a grand final classic, as expected played in great spirit and going all the way down to the wire. The Lions are the heir apparent to the Demons’ dynasty, just last weekend adding the WGCA Twenty20 crown to its Premier Division success in March. Captain of that T20-winning team, Jack Anning, says the Lions are excited to be part of Davey’s and Kooweerup’s big day. “I’m not even 25 years old, so for him to be playing for that long and still be one of the best players in the competition is remarkable to me,” Anning said. “To have a grand final record like his, how he stands up under pressure, it’s something we can all aspire to. We’re excited to be playing in a game that honours him; hopefully we can pick him up cheaply and then have a beer after the game and celebrate what has been a magnificent career.” The Lions will go in chock-full of confidence after skipper Dom Paynter (3/20) claimed a career-first hat-trick in the Lions three-wicket win over Up-

Warriors ready for battle royal By David Nagel The West Gippsland Warriors will take a team chock full of all-round talent to this year’s Country Week, which begins on Monday 30 January. Country Week is a carnival where the very best country cricketers from around the state converge on metropolitan Melbourne to put their skills to the ultimate test. The Warriors have not tasted success since 2009, when Kooweerup all-rounder Shane ‘The Great Man’ Dole led the WGCA to the Division 3 title. But that could all be about to change with the Warriors picking a versatile and experienced line up. Of the 14 players selected, only Kooweerup batsman Ben Spicer has been selected for a specific purpose - to make runs, and make plenty. The side includes 11 true allrounders and two keeper-batsmen with Rob Elston and Chris Bright both more than proficient in both aspects of the game. Despite some key absences, Warriors manager Phil Anning is looking forward to a competitive performance from the cream of the competition. “I love Country Week, it’s been a tradition for our association for many years and I think we’ve picked a side that can perform well,” Anning said. “We’ve picked the best team available, and while it won’t be easy I’m pretty confident that these are the boys that can get us back to division two.” Anning said the players will enjoy the experience. “It’s more than the cricket experience at Country Week, it’s about getting to know your peers and I can’t wait to spend a week away with a quality bunch of young men,” he said. The Warriors came close to success last year with two early wins

Trying their best to help By David Nagel Just one hour a week can change lives. It would seem a very small price to pay for men across the south-east who can make a real difference in helping young people help break the cycle of disadvantage. TRY Mentoring has been helping the young people of Melbourne for more than 130 years and is looking for male volunteers to help it with the great work it does in the community. And blokes out there - it’s as simple as being yourself. In fact, if you can be a friend, you can be a great mentor. Former AFL star and current Narre Warren Football Club coach Heath Black will be the guest speaker at an information session held by TRY Mentoring at 7pm on Thursday 9 February at Holm Park Reserve in Beaconsfield. TRY Mentoring co-ordinator Netty Bailey said that small investment of time can make a huge dif-
ference to a young person in need. “For a young person from a disadvantaged background, a positive mentor can change their life,” Bailey said. “All our research says they will be less likely to use drugs or alcohol, or find themselves in trouble with the police. “And they will be more likely to go to school and develop good relationships with their family and friends. “Just as prevention is much more effective than a cure, mentoring a young person is a proven early intervention that will help them create a positive life trajectory.” Approximately 71 per cent of boys who need help come from the growth corridor in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The ages range from seven to 25 with most sitting in the 10 to 16 age bracket. “There are some amazing men out there who can make a real difference,” Bailey said. “Particularly from sporting clubs
because men in that environment already nurture and mentor young men. “But really we’re looking for anyone with the heart to help.” TRY currently runs two kinds of mentoring programs across the Melbourne metropolitan area. In the One-to-One Program, mentors and mentees have contact three to four times a month, usually for an hour or two once a week, and there is a minimum 12-month commitment. TRY will assess the volunteer and then give all the necessary training and support - volunteers won’t be thrown in the deep end. MiTH (Mentoring in the Hood) is a group program where young people and mentors come together in an activity for one hour a week. MiTH usually runs for a year within a school or in a community space. What each group does depends on the interests of the young people and the skills that the volunteer mentors bring.

Looking on were five players unavailable to play due to injuries - who witnessed the disappointment. Cranbourne will now need to win the next few games to save themselves from moving further down the ladder and placing more pressure on themselves. The second team and the third team also recorded disappointing losses and will need a reversal of form to be more competitive for the remaining season. Audi’s traction on tradition By Derek Ogden While a tsunami of sports utility vehicles is well on its way to swamping passenger car markets around the world, some marques are offering a middle ground vehicle. Versions of the traditional station wagon with higher ground clearance and all-wheel-drive. Frankly these sensible high-riding wagons are not proving popular because buyers prefer the macho image of a 4WD, even if its does have 2WD and compromised ground clearance. The latest version of the A4 comes in Avant (station wagon) style, with the top of the heap being the new secondgeneration Audi allroad quattro offering the practicalities of a station wagon with off-road ability through the newest generation of the quattro all-wheeldrive system. This A4 wagon is available with the 185 kW 2.0 TFSI engine, the first time a petrol engine has been offered in any allroad quattro model in Australia. An alternative is the 140 kW 2.0 TDI diesel motor from the previous generation. The advantage of the new quattro is that it is lighter than the superseded system by four kilograms and brings significant fuel savings. Needless to say, the latest allroad is well specified, with Audi’s high-tech trademarks in all departments.

The Audi A4 allroad quattro stays true to the station wagon tradition, while adding the latest in high-tech automotive engineering. On test was the allroad quattro 2.0 TFSI S tronic petrol variant, which comes to market at $74,400, plus on road costs. Added to the vehicle was the Technik pack consisting of the Audi virtual cockpit for $2200, load area rails with load securing kit ($350), plus metallic paint finish ($1420), nudging up the price to $79,223. The allroad quattro has its own distinctive styling, from a single-frame radiator grille and flared wheel arches filled with 18-inch alloy wheels to aluminium-look trim elements and roof rails.
Despite being a big vehicle, at almost five metres long, exterior lines and proportions are pleasing to the eye, with no bulkiness evident from any angle. In keeping with its go-almost-anywhere character the allroad wagon also bests its Avant stablemate with 34 mm of additional ground clearance. It’s new A4 all round here with quality fit and finish, including leather on the seats, triple-zone air-con and sunblinds on rear windows. Push button start is backed up by one of the better engine start / stop systems around with little hesitation
for the motor to fire up on getting the driver’s go-ahead when stationary. As well as standard Audi Connect with Google Earth sat nav, the A4 allroad quattro is available with the integrated Audi tablet, which allows rear passengers to use the specially developed the Android-compatible device to watch movies or play games. It is also fully integrated into the car’s infotainment system, so it is possible to send navigation destinations to the driver for one-touch approval. The tablets have been developed so as not to injure passengers in the event of an accident, and also with anti-reflective low-glare properties, so they can be used in bright sunlight. A single Audi tablet costs $2000, with a pair priced at $3600. There’s 185 kW on tap from 5000 to 6000 rpm and 370 Nm from 1600 to 4500 rpm from the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. It’s mated with a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. The
maker claims a zero-to-100 km/h time of only 6.1 seconds. When AWD traction is not needed, efficiencies are gained by using only the front axle for propulsion. The two clutches disengage to minimise drivetrain torque losses, which in turn, aids fuel efficiency. The first clutch is at the front of the propeller shaft, the second in the rear differential, which saves the drag of the differential drive gear turning in the oil bath. When torque controls detect wheel slip, up to 100 per cent torque can be sent to either axle. The allroad quattro has earned a five-star ANCAP safety rating thanks to an impressive array of standard safety features. Included are Audi pre-sense city with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian detection (up to 85 km/h), exit warning, cross traffic assist, Audi side assist blind spot warning, Audi pre-sense basic (belt tensioning, window closing and other preventative measures if an emergency is detected), Audi pre-sense rear (warns following traffic if they are at risk of running into the rear of the car) and parking system plus with rear-view camera. With almost every second vehicle on the road being an SUV of sorts the Audi allroad quattro offers a point of difference in almost every way.
