Kinder upgrade By Alana Mitchelson Pakenham Kindergarten has been granted $350,000 for its first major upgrade in its 60 years. The kinder is among 12 children’s centres across the state to receive State Government capital funding to restore and extend facilities to meet community demand. The upgrade includes building new children’s rooms, indoor and outdoor undercover play spaces, a large storage room and consulting rooms to bring family support services on site. Kinders Together project development co-ordinator Di Price said the staff were excited by the impact the upgrade would have on the community. “This has been the major goal that staff, both past and present, have been working towards for at least the past six years,“ Ms Price said. “We are the original Pakenham Kindergarten. The building is more than 60 years old and has only had minor renovations in that time. “Relying on community fund-raisers would take years to raise this kind of money. “It’s a great outcome for the kinder community.“ The upgrade will also support the construction of a new entrance with bag storage and a ramp to enhance accessibility for children with mobility issues. The bathroom will have an additional children’s toilet, nappy change facilities and a disability accessible bathroom. The renovation will increase “floor space“, allowing for the kindergarten to take on more enrolments in the future. A Pakenham man was treated at the scene of a rescue after his boat partially sank and capsized in Western Port Bay on Monday night. The 28-year-old was with another man and a seven-yearold boy who were returning to Stony Point after an evening of ‘night fishing’ when their boat struck a sandbank at about 11.15pm.

The quick-thinking skipper made a distress call on VHF marine radio, let off a number of red flares and activated an emergency position-indicating radio beacon which was being carried on board. All three emergency methods helped alert emergency services to the position of the stricken vessel and they were soon located by the Victoria Police Air Wing, about three nautical miles offshore.

The fishermen were rescued by Volunteer Marine Rescue after spending over an hour in the water in life jackets and were conveyed back to dry land at Stony Point. A 43-year-old Boronia man was taken to hospital as a precaution, while the Pakenham man and the boy, also from Boronia, were treated at the scene. Police will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Red Roo's amazing athletes By Cam Lucadou-Wells With a swag of national titles, Red Roo Sport’s irrepressible basketballers are working hard to be considered for athletic scholarships in the United States. The Dandenong-based club has an under 18s and under 20s team, both brimming with skillful players knuckling down to academically qualify and prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in May. Red Roo Sports director James Kerr, who mentors these young men, believes if they were based in the US, the majority of players would stand a very good chance of playing at a collegiate level. “They’re amazing athletes and great young men who understand how to win and the discipline that it takes. “We would love for each player to have the opportunity to advance in life through sports." Mr Kerr said the barrier was higher for college recruits from Australia because of the cost to bring them over to the US.

But the prize is bright with NBA players at the upper echelons of Australian sports stars’ earnings. Red Roo advises its players that success is a function of extreme hard work, dedication and discipline. In December, both teams, with spectacular, high-tempo play, took out the national 2016 South Sudanese Australian Summer Slam championships to add to several titles over the past two years. “I’d say (the Summer Slam) could be one of the best tournaments in the country. It’s amazing to watch,” Mr Kerr said. Red Roo players, like Jo Jo Deng, Kueth Jock, Buom Kuoth Gatluak, Oyiti Amum, Michael Jok and Golong Golong, catch trains and buses from across Melbourne’s south-east - as far away as Traralgon and Pakenham - to be in the program. They share a clear-eyed, gritty determination to make the college grade. Jo Jo speaks of the importance of not just a sporting career but furthering his education. “It’s like a family here,” Jo Jo says.

“James is like a father figure. He encourages us to stay healthy, teaches us discipline on and off the court and to be patient - things don’t come straight away. “He’s been there for all of us.” Without sponsors or government funds, Red Roo Sports absorbs all costs for its National Championship teams. Training is based at the 24/7 Hoops courts in Dandenong South, which offers Red Roo players round-the-clock access. “If we didn’t have these courts, we would not have a place to practice,” Mr Kerr said. Red Roo aspires to expand to an under 16s boys’, open mens’ and a womens’ team for an increasing list of eager would-be players. “We are trying to provide the correct pathway in what is considered a maze of difficult life decision making choices," Mr Kerr says. “We’ve given them a little bit of hope.”

Spreading the joy is her mission By Victoria Stone-Meadows A Berwick woman is on a mission to bring happiness to all those around her through her Empowered Happiness Project. Carolyn King released a book of the same name 12 months ago after turning her life around following years of crippling depression and a suicide attempt. It was in 2013 when Ms King took a handful of sleeping tablets in an attempt to end her life, having battled depression and low self-esteem. Since releasing her book in 2016, Ms King’s approach to creating and sharing happiness has evolved to the point she is ready to create a happiness movement. “Since launching the book I have created a website and have been releasing free guided meditations and one pdf meditation,” she said. “I have also started a Facebook movement that is starting up and I really want to grow it and spread my message of happiness around.” Since recovering from her depressive mentality, Ms King said it was important for people facing mental illness or even just down times to find a balance of treatment that worked for them. “I want to let people know it’s okay,” she said. “I see people going through issues and I can relate because of what I went though and I’m spreading the happiness for change but it does take work. “I’m not looking to take away from the medical industry - if seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist works, keeping doing that - but this is complementary and can really help a lot of people.” Ms King is hoping to grow her movement to assist people facing depression and anxiety issues as well as

Three soil and mulch businesses in Oâ€™Grady Road, Hallam have been put on notice by the stateâ€™s environmental watchdog over dust pollution plaguing nearby homes and factories. In a letter seen by Star News, the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) advised the businesses to shut down on windy days in response to complaints by neighbours to the north and south. The EPA also advised the businesses to hire a qualified consultant to implement dust management plans. â€œBe aware that EPA continues to monitor the area,â€? EPA southern metro region acting manager Marleen Mathias stated in the letter. She warned that formal Pollution Abatement Notices would be issued if the sites were likely to be the cause of further dust problems off-site. Ms Mathias told Star News that the businesses faced potential fines of up to $777,300 if prosecuted in court. EPA officers will report back with study findings into the dust by mid-February, she said. The EPA action comes several years after businesses in Bolt Court as well as residents in Hampton Park say they started complaining about the odours and dust. The residents in Rowland Close and Glenora Way report regular and severe hay-fever, skin hives, asthma attacks, coughing and sore eyes suffered by children, young and old residents alike. Nearby workers tell of the need to hose down vehicles daily and to keep factory doors constantly closed

Congratulations to Andrew Hartley for being awarded the Star News Person Of The Year for 2016. Perhaps an honour Andrew wishes he was never in a position to warrant receiving. For, as he notes, nobody thinks it is going to happen to them. Well done to Andrew for taking the terrible circumstance of an aggravated burglary and the frustration and anger and, indeed, trauma that comes with this event, and turning it into something positive. Neighbourhood Watch Casey was one of those groups which participated in the community event that Andrew was prompted to organise after his home and privacy was violated. Here we are today, months later, and we see some progress, a commitment for more police, some now and more later. An awakened council even more committed to working with the community to help solve this problem. Neighbourhood Watch stepping up in more and more local areas. Community. This is the key word here, for this is not someone else’s problem to solve. It is up to all of us to work together. Neighbourhood Watch Casey is here to play its part, providing the community with the tools to help reduce crime. There are steps we can all take to care not only for our own homes but also to look out for our neighbours, for this is at the heart of Neighbourhood Watch. I am writing to inform you about a positive experience recently. My Mum, who is 80 years old, blind and with other health issues, was admitted to Casey Hospital for what turned out to be a two-week stay. The staff are to be commended - from the doctors to the physio, social workers, catering and cleaning crew but particularly the nurses - for being so hardworking and dedicated. Of particular mention is Sonya and Mary. Their care and concern for Mum and us was touching and refreshing to witness and we were all treated with respect. Even in the midst of what is an extremely difficult job, they kept her dignity, which was important to her. We very much appreciated how they treated us in our time of worry and distress. I write in response to Learn from Jerusalem by Kathleen Caldwell and Anzacs of Jerusalem by Philip Wright of Pakenham in the Berwick News on 12 January re the City of Casey seeking a further sister city as recommended by councillor Rosalie Crestani, the same Casey councillor that seeks State and Federal parliamentary seats in the past Casey council term 2012-2016. How can councillor Crestani be so irresponsible and wasteful of Casey ratepayer funds? How much do Casey rates have to increase annually to accommodate further overseas travel costs by its elected Casey councillors? Do they really care? Despite the many reasons for the establishment of additional sister and friendship cities at Casey ratepayers’ expense, those being the history of Israel, the temporary occupation of the 200 light horsemen in World War I and other unrelated trivial facts provided by the authors, the establishment of any further sister and friendship cities, and that includes other wasted expenditure costs by management and its councillors, are a total and continual financial drain on Casey constituents annually.

Ugly sister Thanks to the Berwick News for promoting debate on very important public issues in local government such as Casey’s plan to establish a sister-city link with Israel. Reading last week’s replies from Kath Calwell and Philip Wright to my letter criticizing any proposed sister-city link with Israel, it is evident that both writers and some of Casey’s councillors may be looking at Israel through rose-coloured glasses. Recent history shows that the United Nations Security Council has made some determinations about Israel which show Israel is far from being an example for the rest of the world (or Casey) to follow. Israel is really an imperialist (or terrorist) state, illegally occupying Palestinian settlements. Resolution 446 stated “that the policy and practices of Israel in establishing settlements in the Palestinian and other Arab territories have no legal validity and constitute a serious obstruction to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East”. Furthermore, under the United Nations Human Rights Council “the council had resolved almost more resolutions condemning Israel than on the rest of the world combined”. World leaders like Jimmy Carter and Mary Robinson have accused the Israeli Defence Force of war crimes against the Palestinian people. In my view, there is no valid argument for Casey council to establish a sister-city link

Let me ask the questions why do we need sister and friendship cities, how do they service the Casey ratepayers, not its councillors, and how much above the $627,035, according to the Casey Travel Register 13 February 2015, are we prepared to accept? If Casey ratepayers and councillors want overseas travel then they should either donate their personal salaries to the council so they can travel widely and extensively whatever their reasons and agendas. I don’t want my Casey rates spent on Casey travel overseas, do you? I recall previously Kathleen opposed overseas travel and wasted expenditure items, why the change Kathleen? I say no to overseas travel and the wastage of Casey ratepayer costs on all sister and friendship cities. Neighbours claim they were left in the dark on Casey Council’s plans to compulsorily acquire a 78-year-old man’s home and wildlife-rich acreage to build soccer fields in Narre Warren North. At a meeting on 11 January, supporters gathered in the setting sun watching kangaroos graze on John Foy’s 34-acre block, many only recently finding out about the council’s plans for a soccer complex. Renee Haoust said she and other Maclaine Court neighbours directly north of the block were not consulted on Amendment C223. “We are all very livid. “Everyone that I have spoken to about this issue say it is the first time they have known about it. “My particular boundary will be only metres away from a public toilet block and I would only assume lots of criminal behaviour and seedy public persons hanging around.” Ms Haoust said she didn’t receive a letter from the council to tell her about the acquisition, nor did she see a public notice advertisement in Berwick News and the Government Gazette in July. Ms Haoust said she would have objected to the plan, had she known of its full scope. She found out several weeks after Planning Panels Victoria heard and then reported its findings to Casey on December 16. Some months back, Casey officers told her the proposal would only include a walking track next to Eumemmerring Creek, she said. Even neighbours who did receive notification letters from the council said there was no mention of what was planned for the site. Ms Haoust says she’s upset for Mr Foy potentially losing his paradise

Twenty20 finals heat up By David Nagel WGCA TWENTY20 KOOKABURRA CUP FINALS PREVIEW ONLY three clubs have claimed the WGCA Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup with Kooweerup looking to continue that 11-year tradition on finals day at Pakenham’s Toomuc Reserve on Sunday. The Demons will be the sole representative of an exclusive group; with Cardinia and Tooradin the only other teams to have tasted success in the newest, shortest, and most exciting format of the game. Tooradin won the first tournament in 2005/06 and the most recent title last year, with Cardinia (six titles) and Kooweerup (three) sharing the tasty, meaty bit of the sandwich. But the Demons face a new challenge this year, with Devon Meadows, Pakenham and Upper Beaconsfield forming the silky quartet set to lock horns in Sunday’s finals series. The Demons take on Devon Meadows in one semi-final with Pakenham and Upper Beaconsfield going toe-to-toe in the other. The two winners will meet for the title of Twenty20 champions of West Gippsland. It’s a title that has narrowly eluded Upper Beaconsfield in the past, the Maroons three times runners-up after losing to Cardinia in 2009 and the Demons in 2012 and ’15. One of the Maroons’ greatest ever players, legspinner Scott Pitcher, believes the time could be right for the Maroons to finally hoist some silverware. “We’re pretty good at the short form of the game but we just can’t seem to get across the line,” Pitcher explained. “Every player is in the game, they’re fun to play, and it’s great for the club to once again make

it this far into the tournament.” The Maroons - currently fifth on the Premier Division ladder - are the only member of the remaining four not certain of playing finals in the regular season. Kooweerup and Pakenham are top two in Premier Division while the Panthers are the runaway leaders in District. “Look, we haven’t given up hope of playing finals this year but we’re no shoo-in like the others and hopefully that makes it a bit more important to us,” Pitcher said. “The other teams are all quality but we firmly believe our best cricket will match them on the day. We’ve always played this format of the game well and we understand what’s required to win.” The Maroons’ understanding of the short form was nurtured early in the piece, with former firstclass player Shawn Flegler imparting his knowledge during his time at the club. Flegler was heavily involved with the Melbourne Stars in their initial years in the KFC Big Bash and brought a level of professionalism to Upper Beaconsfield. “He was fantastic with what he brought to the table,” Pitcher enthused. “Just little things like where to bowl to batsmen to concede a single, not a four, and how important fielding was before many people recognised it. I think the Twenty20 game has really improved local cricket and I think the association (WGCA) should genuinely consider scheduling some games in the regular season.” This weekend looms as one of the most exciting finals series on record, with marquee signings from all four clubs set to make an impact. IN just 92 minutes, Narre Warren teenager Destanee Aiava has proven to the world she is going to be a force to be reckoned with for the next decade. After qualifying as a maindraw wildcard entry as the national 18-and-Under champion, Aiava won her first qualifier at the Brisbane International earlier this month, knocking off the revered Bethanie Mattek-Sands before falling to champion player Svetlana Kuznetsova. In her Australian Open debut on Monday, up against German qualifier Mona Barthel, the 273rd ranked Aiava put up a brave fight, losing 6-3, 7-6 (74), and showing the immense qualities that have seen her become the first player this century to contest in the main-draw at a Grand Slam tournament. The game looked gone for the 16-year-old, dropping the ninth game of the second set after pushing a volley wide and then double-faulting. But she surged back with composure, showing nerves of steel to save a match point and therefore level the second set 5-5. But what was most impressive about Aiava’s performance was her cracking backhand winner in the second set after a long rally and her subsequent fight until the very end. Speaking post-match, Aiava was visibly disappointed but was thrilled to get the experience to play against the best in the world. “It was pretty fun playing out there, it was a really good experience and I enjoyed it this isn’t the first and last time I’m going to be here, there’s plenty more to come,” he said.

“I learnt how to be more composed out there, and I didn’t rush as much but it just wasn’t my day. “I just focus what’s ahead for me and not dwell on the past - I’m looking forward to the rest of the year and what’s ahead. “I played alright but I felt I could have done better - I had a lot of chances and I didn’t take them so I have to work on that. “It got a bit tight during the tie-break and I started rushing and not thinking through the points, but I think that’s just a matter of experience.” But what the Australian public has learnt however, is that Aiava is a name to watch, and represents a future in Australian tennis that is exciting and driven.

Battling Bulls on the retreat By David Nagel Cardinia’s vice-like grip on a place in the West Gippsland Premier Division finals series has weakened somewhat after the Bulls turned in a shocker against fellow premiership aspirant Pakenham at E Gunton Oval on Saturday. The Bulls were expected to rebound after a surprise loss to Merinda Park, but were rolled for just 109 in response to the Lions 8/177 from their 40 overs. It’s certainly not panic stations for the Bulls - they still have a 20-point advantage over fifth-placed Upper Beaconsfield - but they do look vulnerable as the pointy end of the season approaches. They should salute against Emerald in the final one-day round of the season, before tough two-day matches against Tooradin and Kooweerup give a true indication of their potential. A couple of stumbles and the Bulls last-round clash against Upper Beaconsfield could come with a valuable prize attached. The Bulls once again relied too heavily on their two stars, Dwayne Doig (3/29 off 7) and Neil Barfuss (30), while the Lions were steady across the board. Dom Paynter (35), Rob Elston (30) and the hard-hitting Tom Tyrrell (26 not out) set the platform, before Paynter (4/18 off 5.4), Jason Williams (4/31 off 8) and Tyrrell (2/16 off 6) dismantled the Bulls in the 32nd over. Local cricket clubs are being encouraged to continue an already growing tradition by adding a splash of pink to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation on Pink Stumps Day, Saturday February 18. Ambassador and Director, Tracy Bevan, is encouraging everyone to participate. “Pink Stumps Day is a great way to bring the magic of the Pink Test to your home town or suburb while having fun, showing off your cricket skills and raising money to fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia,” Ms Bevan said. Pink Stumps Day plays a vital fundraising role to help achieve the Foundation’s mission of ensuring every family impacted by breast cancer has access to a dedicated breast care nurse, no matter where they live or their financial situation. Baleno is back with more By Derek Ogden Something old, something new, something borrowed and, if you wish, something (Premium Ray) Blue. That’s what’s on offer with the new Suzuki Baleno - the name, the design, the engine and the colour. Sounding more like an exotic dance, the Baleno took its first steps in the 1990s as a ‘light’ passenger car. Now it has jumped the fence into the ‘small’ passenger segment, having the exterior dimensions of the former with interior space of the latter. The new Baleno comes in two specification levels - GL with a 1.4-litre engine, with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, and the GLX Boosterjet 1.0-litre turbocharged variant, with six-speed automatic transmission. Bigger than its sibling, the top-selling Swift, it shares engines and transmissions in some models. The turbocharged Baleno (the test car), which features a new three-cylinder direct-injection Boosterjet system, has claimed fuel consumption of 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle. More about this in our Driving section. The new Baleno comes to market from $16,990, drive away, for the 1.4-litre GL five-speed manual, with the fourspeed auto adding $1000 to the price. The top-spec 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo six-speed auto joins in at $22,990.

The Baleno has taken the road of the majority of modern small hatchbacks with a reasonably sleek look, without compromising interior space and all-round vision. Suzuki Baleno GLX does what a top-spec vehicle should do - add little touches pleasing to the eye, if not to the pocket. Up front there are high intensity discharge headlamps, incorporating daytime running lights, while the look is lifted with 16-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels. Cabin width has been improved by reducing door liner intrusion into the front seats. Pushing the seats further apart gives more shoulder room for the driver and front passenger. There is excellent knee and legroom between the front and rear seats and the Baleno can carry four adults with ease. Even with the rear seat backs up, the cargo area can carry 355 litres of gear. In an interesting design move removable side trims in the boot deliver more space, allowing items such as a set of golf clubs to be carried sideways. A central display screen, situated high on the central dashboard, is ideally placed at driver’s eye level with links to ApplePlay and MirrorLink smart phone interfaces which include music, maps, messages, current track information, audio books and pod-

The Suzuki Baleno returns - with the latest looks and excellent cabin space. casts, as well as navigation and rear camera viewing. The 7.0-inch colour touchscreen home page is a simple quadrant which acts as the key to entry to audio, phone, sat nav and smartphone connectivity. The screen is flanked by air-con outlets, while controls and temperature gauge are positioned beneath within easy reach of the driver and front seat passenger. Personalisation of graphics monitoring systems include engine power and torque outputs; real-time driving and tracked G-forces; accelerator and brake efficiencies; and average speed and fuel consumption. The 1.0-litre Boosterjet three-cylinder motor, with its six-speed automatic

transmission, has it all over its 1.4-litre non-turbo brother in performance and fuel efficiency. But there is a price to pay: $6000. Six airbags are standard across the Baleno range, front and rear seats are equipped with pre-tensioners, side doors are fitted with anti-intrusion beams. Active systems include electronic stability control, anti-locking brakes with an electronic brake-force distribution system. Also adding to safety is a new, lighter stronger platform that makes use of some extra-high-tensile materials while maintaining structural rigidity and thus occupant safety. On taking position, the driver is in-

troduced to the Baleno via an information display at the heart of the instrument cluster giving a clear picture of the state of the vehicle. A 4.2-inch colour LCD screen displays a range of information including fuel efficiency, engine output, average vehicle speed and driving style. In addition to traditional display information such as speed and engine revs, trip meters, distance to empty, average speed and warnings, drivers can tailor the dashboard display to any one of six set-ups. At combined fuel cycle consumption of 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres for the 1.0-litre turbo is close to reality, something that’s not all that common these days.
