Unique gifts of jewellery By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE woman responsible for bringing the massively successful jewellery brand Pandora to Australia has partnered with a new jewellery brand and has opened the first Australian Alex and Ani store at Fountain Gate perfectly timed for Christmas. Crime cameras By Alana Mitchelson LONG-AWAITED CCTV surveillance cameras are to be installed at Pakenham crime hot spot Bourke Park after ongoing community and council lobbying. The Bourke Park CCTV project has been prioritised among 19 crime prevention initiatives across the state as part of the latest Public Safety Infrastructure Fund rollout. The $164,787 State Government grant would fund the installation of 11 CCTV surveillance cameras to provide blanket coverage of the park in an effort to deter anti-social and criminal activity. Pakenham police identified the site as a “high risk community location” in a previous grant application. Earlier this year, the Gazette reported an incident where up to 15 youths used skateboards and scooters to belt beat an adult male to the ground at Bourke Park in daylight. Another recent incident near Bourke Park involved a 17-year-old boy being assaulted by a group of men in an attempted robbery. Research has shown that community concerns focused on the “high degree of anti-social and criminal behaviour” at Bourke Park and the surrounding area near Pakenham train station. These included illicit drug and public alcohol abuse, illicit drug dealing, public urination, loitering, vandalism and assaults. The council responded in 2014 with infrastructure improvements including improved lighting, and the installation of two playgrounds, two shelters with picnic settings and two barbecues. The Federal Government issued a funding grant in May this year aimed at “rejuvenating” Bourke Park by encouraging “passive surveillance”.

Bourke Park will have 11 CCTV cameras installed to deter criminal activity. 121205

But these plans excluded CCTV cameras and instead focused on additional path lighting, an extension of the footpath at the northern section of the park, horticultural landscaping works and an “activation zone” that has since prompted a regular food truck initiative. Mayor Brett Owen said the council was pleased that its application for 11 cameras had been successful.

“We look forward to their installation to ensure Bourke Park remains a family-friendly and safe community space,” Mr Owen said. “I know the community will also welcome the cameras as a means of deterring and detecting criminal and anti-social behaviour in the area.” Other projects across the state received funding for lighting, CCTV,

furniture, a new toilet facility and street lighting upgrades. Cardinia Shire Council community strengthening manager Stephen Sparrow said the council would issue more details about the Bourke Park CCTV project “in due course”. For more information, visit www. crimeprevention.vic.gov.au.

Spotlight on golden boy PARALYMPIC champion Matthew Lewis has been named as a finalist alongside the Australian wheelchair rugby team for Team of the Year as part of the Australian Paralympic Awards, held in Sydney on Thursday 8 December. The Pakenham man helped the Steelers to victory at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, defeating Great Britain, Brazil, Canada and Japan to play their rivals, the United States in the gold medal match. With neither side extending their margin by more than three points, the fourth period buzzer sounded with the teams tied 49all. Australia ultimately edged out the US 59-58 in a doubleovertime thriller, becoming the first team in history to win consecutive Paralympic gold medals and a world championship in a four-year period. Congratulating Lewis and the rest of the Steelers for their gold medal win and the nomination, Chef de Mission of the 2016 Australian Paralympic Team Kate McLoughlin said the following: “Wheelchair rugby is one of the most exciting sports to watch at the Paralympic Games, and to see Australia win after such a suspenseful match was one of the highlights of the entire Games.

It’s their tree of dreams By Cam Lucadou-Wells FOR years, the towering cypress tree had been a centrepiece of Fountain Gate Primary School’s playground. Students had frolicked under its mighty canopy immortalised in the school logo. Now in its afterlife, it has been fittingly re-imagined as a quirky treehouse of wonder. Perhaps reminiscent of Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree. Designed by Tom Coupe, director of Berwick-based Blue Leaf Creations, the structure is finished beautifully with timbers, windows and odd angles. There are many ways to climb into the house - take your pick of a ladder, spiral staircase, rope bridge, fireman’s pole or climbing rope. Principal Jenny Duggan said there was a strong desire to retain the dead pine in some form. She was delighted with the rustic, old-worldly look - the wood intentionally blackened in parts, and standing askew in others. “It looks like a fantasy place,” she said. Students have little hope of ever climbing into the seemingly-occupied crow’s nest platform hovering high in the tree’s fork. They will just have to look up and imagine what lives above.

Carols kids play out their nativity scene FIREWORKS weren’t the only attraction drawing some 5000 people to this year’s Pakenham Carols by Candlelight event. A live nativity scene - featuring a real life sheep - and an appearance from Santa were few of the additional highlights which made up the festive event on Saturday 10 December. Local kids played out the nativity scene and other Christmas performances. Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen welcomed everyone to the carols event at Toomuc Reserve, making special mention of volunteers from Pakenham Rotary and Lions Clubs, the Pakenham SES and CFA, Cardinia District Scouts, Neighbourhood Watch Cardinia, and St Patricks Catholic Church Pakenham. Families held onto candles as they sung along to carols performed by Cardinia Civic Concert Band and the community choir. A spectacular firework display closed the event.

Man’s bail refused on child porn charges By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 25-YEAR-OLD man accused of child pornography has been refused bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, partly in fear he could destroy some of the online evidence. Benjamin Michael Gledhill had been arrested by Australian Federal Police at his home, where the most extreme categories of pornography involving children, sadism and bestiality were allegedly found on 13 December. First Constable Scott Amjah, of the AFP, told the court that among the seized material found in print and on electronic devices was an image of a naked young child who was “tied up and bound”. “The early indications say yes, he’s definitely been sharing (the im-

ages) in some form.” First Const Amjah quoted extracts from a conversation on the messenger app Kick, in which Gledhill allegedly chats to ‘Derek’ and says “that’s a pretty collection of videos, man”. On other app chats with unknown people, he says his preference is for “pre-teen” sex, “teens, incest, nudism” and “boys and girls 1-10” - which First Const Amjah told the court he assumed meant 1-10 years old. Gledhill had previously served a community corrections order for similar offending in 2012, the court heard. In arguing for bail, Gledhill told the court he’d complied with previous bail conditions including weekly visits to Pakenham police station,

psychological treatment and being banned from the internet. He said he complied with his CCO’s community work conditions and appointments. “I’ve never been held in custody or remanded before,” he said. “That’s quite concerning for me.” Police had arrested Gledhill after a referral from a US company in early November about the transmission of child pornography, the court heard. Federal police linked the transmission to a G-mail account, which led them to Gledhill, First Const Amjah said. Gledhill had told police that he had 40 online accounts, some of which had not yet been accessed by police, First Const Amjah said.

If the accused was released on bail, he could easily access and delete the online material and compromise the AFP investigation, the court heard. Gledhill was charged at Dandenong police station that day but didn’t participate in a police interview. He made no admissions during field interviews, First Const Amjah said. Magistrate Barry Schultz described the allegations as “very serious” and “very concerning”, particularly in light of the 2012 offending. Gledhill was remanded to appear at a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 14 December.

TWO men have been left with serious facial injuries after they were allegedly punched and kicked by a pair of youths in Pakenham. Police are hunting for the pair believed to be responsible for the violent attack. At about 12.10am on Sunday 4 December, two men believed to be aged in their twenties approached two older men in Lyle Blue Court, Pakenham, just near the Princes Highway fast food restaurants. The offenders are believed to have begun repeatedly punching and kicking the victims - men aged 30 and 31 - causing injuries to their face. Police are awaiting the victims’ medical reports to determine the seriousness of their injuries, but believe they may have suffered broken facial bones. The altercation is believed to have started after a verbal incident. Police have released CCTV images of the two men whom they believe may be able to assist in their inquiries. The first man is perceived to be in his late teens or early twenties, wearing a dark baseball cap, black and grey jumper and a thick chain. The second man is perceived to be in his late teens, or early twenties wearing a white Adidas jumper, and dark baseball cap. End-of-year get together THE Monash Health Cranbourne Community Mental Health Service has hosted another annual Christmas party for its clients. The party was held at the Cranbourne Lawn Bowls club and featured a barbecue lunch, Father Christmas with some gifts for clients and their families, and a small singing group from the Berwick Church of Christ. Afterwards the group tried some bowling. The Christmas party has become a tradition that clients and staff enjoy and look forward to and allows all involved with the Cranbourne Community Mental Health Service to let their hair down. A FATHER of five has pleaded guilty to trafficking drugs and handling proceeds of crime after being discovered with a cocktail of drugs and electronic devices in a car at a Pakenham car wash. Brian Andrew Duyn, 33, had been seen with a male and female cleaning a Ford Falcon with stolen number plates on 2 October about 5.45pm, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. When fronted by police, Duyn produced a fake Victorian driver’s licence with his photo and the purported name “Wayne Hood” of Waverley Road, Mt Waverley. The unemployed man was found with $1375 cash on his person and then fled on foot as police began to search the car. After an hour-plus pursuit involving other police units including the Air Wing, Duyn “lashed out” during his ar-

rest and had to be forcibly restrained, the court heard. Meanwhile during the car search, police found an ice pipe, and a milk crate containing mobile phones, cordless drills and gaming consoles. About five grams of suspected ice in three small bags, as well as a bag of cannabis and a container of 15 grams of GHB were also seized by police. At the time there were two warrants for Duyn’s arrest including for stealing a vehicle. The lawyer said he was intending to move to his girlfriend’s home in Highett to escape his associates in Narre Warren-Pakenham. The accused had been drugfree for most of his twenties until he “spiralled out of control” into an ice addiction when made redundant as a forklift operator in 2012, the lawyer said. Duyn had since “made steps” to booking in for rehab and seeking work as well as be-

CASEY council’s recent decision to scuttle a proposed meeting with the Victorian Multicultural Commission chairwoman Helen Kapalos has been made unilaterally and without any systemic evidence of public opinion. This shows that many Casey councillors don’t really give a damn about what their residents and ratepayers think. Neither the mayor of Casey Sam Aziz or Cr Rosalie Crestani, have any evidence that the local community rejects multiculturalism (see Cultural Clash by Cam Lucadou-Wells, 7 December, Berwick News). What is even more disturbing is the fact that Casey councillors also passed a motion from Cr Crestani to explore a sister city relationship with Israel. Why does the Mayor Sam Aziz and Cr Crestani want to develop a sister city relationship with Israel? The southern-eastern suburbs have an unemployment rate of 8.1 per cent, there are people living in old cars, domestic violence, and increasing drug and gambling addiction problems and now Casey councillors sit around demonizing multiculturalism and idealizing Israel. Israel, however, is a country lead by a Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who has been described as a “war criminal.” Under Benjamin Netanyahu Israel has breached international law by abusing Palestinian prisoners and expanding Israeli settlements into Palestinian occupied territories. Casey Hospital is set to be massively expanded with almost $135 million provided to create 64 new beds, four additional operating theatres, an intensive care unit and a day surgery unit. Hampton Park Primary School is set to be rebuilt, Kambrya College’s old portables are being replaced and Strathaird Primary School is getting a new outdoor shelter. Our community will soon receive up to $700,000 of direct Youth Crime Prevention investment as well as a $250,000 grant to improve safety in the Narre Warren village. There’s more to do and we won’t waste a moment getting on with the job of delivering for you and your family. As part of Casey Council’s call for more state funding for the $2.7 million program, a ‘lollypopper’ has told Star News that they may be asked to hand out the council’s propaganda, wear badges and rally on the steps of State Parliament. The council has said it will mount a significant advocacy campaign of up to 12 months for the State Government to split the program’s costs 50:50. Currently Casey is set to pay about 76 per cent of the program’s expenses in 2016-'17. AN unco-operative under-age accused seems

to have languished in adult prison for months while awaiting trial at a Children's Court. The court heard that the child’s lawyer had repeatedly requested adjournments of the hearings since June, but had not appeared in court in person. The situation was “intolerable” even though the child had admittedly refused to take phone calls, the judge said. The child’s level of violence was also very high, and had last appeared on video link in handcuffs. “I won’t bring a child to court under restraint. “He just needs to know his rights are being respected as well.”

The judge indicated that the law firm would be reported to the Victorian Legal Services Board. A STRAY cigarette appeared to set off a spectacular bin fire outside Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 December. With the temperature well above 30 degrees, court security were put to quick action extinguishing tall flames and a thick white wall of smoke covered the courthouse’s Pultney Street entrance. It made some visitors wonder what the evacuation plan was - especially with the court’s only other entrance in Langhorne Street being closed due to works.

School turning the sod By Victoria Stone-Meadows LOCAL MPs, students and school officials gathered for a ceremonial ‘turning of the sod’ at the newest development for Rivercrest Christian College in Clyde North. Member for Bass Brian Paynter and Member for Narre Warren South Judith Grayley were guests at the school to see how the new developments were coming along. The new buildings at the school include a hub incorporating spaces for visual arts, performing arts, instrumental tuition and a discovery centre and a new administration centre for the Rivercrest Primary Campus. The arts hub has had its concrete slab poured while the administration centre will undergo major works in the coming months. Both new buildings have been

significantly funded by the current State Government. The school is underging further development with the addition of a new multi-purpose facility as well as a smaller community hub. The new-look Rivercrest college is not stopping there though with plans currently being submitted to the Casey Council to update Rivercrest’s master plan for the secondary campus. “I expect that when MP Paynter and MP Grayley return, they will see further evidence of the transformation of this wonderful IB Christian College,” Executive Principal Geoff Grace said. Once the full development of the school is completed by year year 2024, the school will be a fully equipped and operation early learning to Year 12 educational institution.

Critic of the court By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE grandfather of a Pakenham woman, who was found deceased in her home in 2014, has lashed out at the Drug Court of Victoria (DCV) for releasing her ex-partner Troy Boothey. Mr Boothey was released from police custody and placed on a Drug Treatment Order (DTO) after appearing via video-link in the court on Thursday 8 December. Boothey was a suspect in the death of Maddison Murphy-West, but was never arrested or charged. Ms Murphy-West’s grandfather Gil Murphy was present in court on Thursday with other members of Maddison’s family, and said the de-

cision to release Boothey was “just wrong.” “This punishment is two years in the community, and if he stuffs it up he goes back to prison for seven days,” Mr Murphy said. “It’s not really a deterrent for someone like him and they very rarely rescind these orders.” Mr Boothey pleaded guilty to drugs and drug trafficking charges during his court appearance on Thursday, and agreed to undertake the drug treatment order in lieu of serving a prison sentence. However, Mr Murphy, said the system of the drug court was ultimately flawed and offenders didn’t get sentences that fitted their crimes.

“There is a big problem in the drug court,” Mr Murphy said. “I think the drug court is a complete failure, and they don’t do any good with it.” “With only one magistrate in charge of it and this therapeutic justice approach they think they can rehabilitate everybody and if they get one in 10 that’s okay.” “In the meantime, what happens to all the victims? They get forgotten.” The Drug Court of Victoria was established in May 2002 with a focus on rehabilitating offenders with drug or alcohol dependence with a view to reintegrating them into the community.

An evaluation of the Drug Court of Victoria conducted by professional services firm KPMG in 2014 however showed that the approach of the court was a successful model for offender rehabilitation. The report’s analysis of re-offending while on a DTO over the evaluation period showed that 83 per cent of DCV clients did not reoffend while on their DTO. The number of times subsequent offences were committed ranged from one to eight, with an average of 3.55 per client. The most frequently committed offences were theft-related offences, which accounted for 32 per cent of all re-offending while on the DTO.

Platform push has a court sequel By Cam Lucadou-Wells A CRANBOURNE West man has been spared conviction after being found guilty of recklessly putting a man in danger of death after pushing him off a railway station platform and leaving him with a broken leg on the train tracks. Kimiora Tangatapoto, 19, had contested the charges - including recklessly causing serious injury - at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 December claiming he’d acted in self-defence. Defence lawyer Aaron Eidelson argued that the accused had responded to the “unpredictable” heroin-affected victim at the Yarraman station platform in the early evening of 8 April. The victim, who had been observed climbing a Myki machine and with a “bag full of syringes” that night, had allegedly started an argument and approached Tangatapoto with a syringe, Mr Eidelson claimed. “We can’t know what this man was capable of. “There was at least one uncapped syringe right next to him within reach - that is a lifethreatening situation.

Tangatapoto then left the station with his associates. The victim - who suffered a severely broken leg as a result of the fall - was hauled to safety by a witness 60 seconds before the 6.03pm express train arrived. The alleged syringe threat was not captured by CCTV footage but Mr White found there was “a great degree of incitement or something that made you do what you did”. The provocation didn’t justify Tangatapoto’s reaction, however, Mr White said. Mr White said that it would also have been reasonably apparent to Tangatapoto that the station was frequented by trains “at a very fast rate” and a “very frequent interval”.

Santa harnesses horsepower SANTA will give his reindeers a rest on Thursday 22 December and instead drive into Main Street, Pakenham, on the back of a horse-drawn carriage. Santa will spread Christmas cheer from 11am until noon as he makes his way along Rogers Street, down to Drake Lane and up Main Street. Elves and the Gazette’s Wally Wombat will hand out treats along the way, and carollers will sing Christmas carols. At noon Santa and his trusty

steed, The Duke, will go to Bourke Park where Santa will be available for photos and everyone can get a chance to see the horse and carriage up close. During the event shoppers have the chance to win prizes in 10 raffles. More than $1500 in products and vouchers from the shop owners on Santa’s route will be up for grabs. Proceeds from the raffle will go to Mill Valley Ranch, which has donated the horse and carriage for the day.

Jillian Ronald, who has helped organise the event on behalf of Art Show Pakenham, said the idea was to bring the joy of Christmas to Main Street. Arthur Bartlett, from Mill Valley Ranch, said The Duke loved his annual rendezvous with Santa. The Duke, who came out of Bart Cummings’s stables, raced for four years before finding a home at Mill Valley Ranch. “As the ranch had never had thoroughbreds or Arabs, be-

cause of their high spirits, we weren’t sure, so took him on a trial basis for one month,” Mr Bartlett said. “Our harness horse had died so The Duke was introduced to harness and responded so well to this and his new surroundings and adjusted quickly to everything and so has been there ever since. “He has featured in many local weddings and, of course, the annual trip with Santa around the streets of Pakenham.”

For easy pizza THE lead-up to Christmas can be hectic and busy, sometimes leaving time short for preparing meals. JJay’s Woodfired Pizza and Kebabs at Pakenham offer a delivery service and according to owner Mira Riad make everything from scratch from the freshest ingredients. “The pastas we cook are made to order and we don’t precook any of our menu items,” Mira said of the business that opened in mid-September. JJays offer Italian-style wood-fired pizzas, as well as their kebabs and pastas. “We cook all our pizzas in a wood-fired oven in order to get the traditional Italian taste,” she said. “All kebabs are made from high quality meat and chickens. We provide fast deliveries not only in the Pakenham area, but also to Officer. We don’t just deliver pizzas but also anything on our menu including chips, kebabs and pastas and we also deliver at lunch on Saturday.” Mira says it’s the fresh ingredients and the fact “that we cook everything to order and also that we make all our pizzas using hand spread and not machines” that really seems set them apart. “We are also very proud of our shop presentation and the fact that we love what we do,” she said.

Coles launches jobs bonanza By Victoria Stone-Meadows SUPERMERKET juggernaut Coles has officially launched a new-look store at Eden Rise Shopping Centre in Berwick South. The revamped store and introduction of online shopping service will create 60 new jobs at the store over the next six months. The new store will have an in-store bakery as well as an open meat counter, continental deli with olive bar and collection of local and imported cheeses. In addition, the store is also installing two new express registers to complement the existing assisted checkouts. The introduction of “Click and Collect” online shopping in mid-2017 will see residents of the area able to do their grocery shopping from the comfort of their homes. Eden Rise Coles manager Chris Anderson said the changes to the store would be a great thing for customers. “We’re committed to our local community and the changes to our store reflect this,” he said. “The team is excited to share a wide range of store upgrades to new and existing customers. “We’re also delighted to be launching ‘Click and Collect’ in the next few months, which will offer out locals more convenience and an option to save time on their shopping.”

Go looking for change or it will come looking for you By Casey Neill SEBN is urging Greater Dandenong’s business community to “be the change” next year. Manager Sandra George announced the 2017 theme for the network at the SEBN Christmas industry breakfast at Bunurong Memorial Park in Dandenong South on Thursday 8 December. She said businesses needed to be on the front foot instead of reacting to change or waiting for it. Robert Bosch Australia president and chairman Gavin Smith also spoke about the need for businesses to be proactive. He joined Bosch in 1990, was appointed president in 2011 and was recently added to the Prime Minister’s taskforce on Industry 4.0 and made chair of the Internet of Things Alliance. Mr Smith told the breakfast that business disruption had never been more of a challenge than it was now. He said that through the Internet of Things - everyday objects having network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data - more than 50 billion things would be connected to the internet by 2022. “That creates a world of opportunities but it also creates a world of pain if you don’t understand it,” Mr Smith said. He said businesses needed to connect their factories to the internet to be competitive, and said they would be excluded if they didn’t. “People are in control of this fourth industrial review,” he said. “You are not alone. We are all in the same situation. “We can’t just sit and wait and hope it will get better. “It won’t.” Mr Smith has helped automotive supplier Bosch to overcome disruptive changes to the sector. “Our manufacturing footprint will never be what it was,” he said. “But that’s a good thing.”

Mr Berenyi said prospective customers often didn’t tell companies

what they wanted because they didn’t want to, they didn’t know how to, or they didn’t know what they wanted. He said it wasn’t about what something was made from or cost. “It’s what it delivers from an emotional perspective,” he said. “McDonald’s is all about socialising, it’s not about hamburgers.” In his annual update, Greater Dandenong CEO John Bennie said this year’s introduction of rate-capping had left the council with less revenue to do what it needed to do. “It causes us to be more innovative and look at new and different ways of doing things,” he said. He said VicRoads had indicated that the Dandenong Bypass segment to be built between South Gippsland High-

Aidan’s off to nationals By Nick Creely FROM humble beginnings at Pakenham, rising baseball star Aidan Willis has certainly come a long way. So much so, that the 16-year-old will now represent Victoria Blue in the Under 18 national championships in Blacktown from 6-15 January 2017. Willis, a product of the Berwick Baseball Club, was ecstatic at the chance to pull on the blue for his state. “I found out about two weeks ago now - we’ve started training down in Altona already - I was stoked and it was just a good feeling to be chosen,” he said. “I can’t wait to play with the boys, and see how far we can get - the side is strong, we have a few top-age guys.” His journey started at a young age, and inspired by his dad, he took up the game that he now believes can take him far. “I started baseball with

Dad when I was about nine years old, mostly because I wanted to do something over the winter and I played cricket over the summer,” he said. “I train about two days a week - but from there on, the other days I’m just looking to work hard and get better. “Batting and fielding are my two biggest strengths, and I’m a quick runner - I love watching Mike Trout, he is one of my favourites, because he plays the game hard and runs hard, and Bryce Harper as well; he just dominates and has a presence at the plate. “I’d like to eventually make my way to college, and see how that goes, and I’ll do everything I can to make that happen.” With the game evergrowing in the south-east, Willis believes it can only get stronger as more and more kids elect to try the game. “The game is strong in

this region and its growing - there’s a few charter baseball clubs like the Mariners, I played with them last year, and we won in Geelong, and then went to Lismore for the nationals, and then on top of that, played in the Asia Pacific in the Philippines and then came second in the World Series,” Willis explained. But a decision had to be made, and at the age of 14-years, he elected to leave cricket and pursue his dream of making it is a baseballer. “When I was about 14, I stopped playing cricket and chose baseball instead cricket has given me a foundation in baseball I guess - I was noticeably better at baseball and chose that,” he said. “Anytime you do something wrong you have a chance to redeem yourself for the team, when I used to play cricket and you get out that’s it, so the game just has that excitement factor to it.”

PAKENHAM Golf Club’s tight and tricky layout lived up to its ‘sleeping giant’ tag, proving a tough opponent for some of the state’s top professional golfers at the Burden’s Pakenham Invitational last Friday. Not one of the quality 29man field - including the inform Ash Hall and local-favourite Scott Laycock - could break par, with eventual winner Euan Walters shooting a one-over par 72 in cold, unseasonable conditions. Walters scored a two-shot victory over Laycock, Josh Shaw and Kevin Booker, another local professional wellaccustomed to the vagaries of the Pakenham course. The career-highlight for the 46-year-old Walters came at the 2004 Jacobs Creek Open at the Kooyonga Club in Adelaide. Victory in the co-sanctioned event earned him playing rights on the lucrative Nationwide Tour in America, where he finished 14th on the money list to earn PGA Tour status in 2005. The Jacobs Creek Open, formerly the South Australian Open, has been won by some of the greats of Australian golf including Peter Thomson (1968), Peter Senior (1979), Greg Norman (1986-‘96), Brett Ogle (1992) and Craig Parry (1999). International stars Guy Wolstenholme (1971), Ronan Rafferty (1987), Gordon Brand Jnr (1988) and superstar Nick Price (1989) also adorn the trophy. And an epic 90 not-out by Luke Merrett has saved Cardinia from defeat in a thriller against Lang Lang. Chasing 256 runs for victory, the Bulls were in trouble at 4/95 and then 6/129, before Merrett combined with Josh Brown (30) to guide them home. Joseph Dalgleish (3/34) and Ricky Caddell (2/50) toiled hard, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to prevent the Swamp Tigers from enduring their most disappointing loss of the season to date.
