Gift of cultural sharing a given By Narelle Coulter THE giving of gifts is not a traditional part of Christmas celebrations in South Sudan.

However, Pakenham Uniting Church and Target are making sure children of Sudanese heritage whose families have settled in Cardinia shire will get a gift this festive season. The Reverend Ann Simons urged the Pakenham community to get behind the 25th Target Uniting Care Christmas Appeal. The appeal collects gifts and money for distribution through Uniting Care Connections. “We give gifts from the church,” Reverend Simons said. “There is not a culture of gift giving within Sudanese families. They are not so much focused on the gifts they get, it’s more about community, food, hospitality and sharing of meals. “Each child will get a gift and we support the parents with gift cards so they can purchase appropriate and culturally sensitive items to celebrate Christmas their way. “It’s empowering and enabling for people to choose how to spend their money at Christmas.” Reverend Simons said most families spent their gift cards on food. Members of the Sudanese community, who are predominately Christian, spend up to a fortnight marking the birth of Jesus through song, dance and feasting. Community liaison of-

ficer Riak Kiir said the sharing of food and hosting family and friends was a crucial part of Christmas celebrations. At his Pakenham home, Mr Kiir expects to host up to 30 friends and relatives. He and his family will also visit friends and relatives in the Sudanese community as far afield as Werribee and Melton. “We sit and share food, moving from house to house,” he said. Reverend Simons hopes that more than 50 gifts will be collected through the appeal. The church will host a traditional Christmas meal for its Pakenham congregation during which the presents and gift cards will be handed out. Reverend Simons said the number of people regularly worshipping at Pakenham Uniting Church had skyrocketed with the influx of Sudanese refugees into Cardinia Shire. “We share some of our Western traditions including a Christmas meal. We have turkey and pudding and each child gets a gift and we sing carols,” she said. “Because we want them to feel they belong we don’t want to impose Western cultural traditions but that the two sit comfortably beside each other.” Gifts can be donated at Target Pakenham or shoppers can purchase a token at the checkout, the money from which is pooled and used to purchase gift cards.

The local community will get a chance to come together and celebrate the festive season at the Cardina Council run event on Saturday 10 December at Toomuc Reserve, Princes Highway, Pakenham. Mayor Brett Owen said the Coun-

cil was presenting the event again this year, with the support of many local businesses and community groups. Cardinia Shire families are in for a fabulous, free evening of festive entertainment. “The 30-piece Cardinia Civic Concert Band will play a selection of classic and much-loved Christmas tunes. It will be accompanied by a community

choir, which will lead the crowd in the shire’s biggest ever sing-along,” Cr Owen said. “Santa will make a grand appearance and the night will end with a bang as we all enjoy a dazzling fireworks display.” The mayor reminded local dog owners that the carols were a pet-free event and residents should ensure their

Libraries tap in to generosity CASEY Cardinia Libraries (CCL) has established forgiving trees at all its branches in the lead-up to Christmas. People are welcome to contribute items of food or unwrapped gifts for people in need of support. If donors have library fines, CCL will waive their fees in acknowledgement of their generosity. Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO Chris Buckingham said the forgiving tree was a golden opportunity for library members with overdue items or fines to wipe the slate clean and feel good about it. “This is the season for giving, and we want people across our community to know that if they pay it forward and help out others, we will return the favour,“ Mr Buckingham said. “We know Christmas is a time where lots of households are under pressure to make ends meet. Santa to make grand entrance By Alana Mitchelson THE Gazette’s Wally Wombat is here to bring the Christmas spirit to Pakenham’s Main Street along with his friend Olivia the Christmas Elf and Santa Claus. Police priority By Alana Mitchelson POLICEMAN and newly elected mayor Brett Owen is hopeful Cardinia shire will gain frontline police following the State Government’s commitment to increase police numbers in growth areas. Over the next four years an additional 2729 police officers will be introduced to police stations across the state. Councillor Owen said the council had advocated to state representatives for the “strong need” for more police across the shire, with letters highlighting concerns about current resources. “My understanding is that growth areas will be a priority. I look forward to seeing the details on where these members will go,” Cr Owen said. “The council wrote to the Police Minister and the Police Association earlier this year to request additional police resources after our community expressed concern about increasing crime across the shire, and it is very pleasing that our efforts have paid dividends. “I know I speak on behalf of my councillor colleagues and the wider community in welcoming the commitment to provide close to 3000 extra police across Victoria over the next four years, and we all look forward to seeing an increased police presence throughout Cardinia shire in the coming months and years.” Cr Owen said a recent community engagement survey conducted by the council identified crime, perceptions of safety and

The council has since been working towards accreditation as an International Safe Community through the World Health Organisation. This process includes formulating a number of action plans, with one focused on crime. As part of the $2 billion State Government investment in police, regional stations in Warracknabeal, Rutherglen, Alexandra, Wycheproof and Tangambalanga will be replaced. New metropolitan stations will also replace outdated facilities in Wyndham, Altona North, Reservoir and South Melbourne. No specific funding has yet been announced to support police within the Cardinia shire region but Minister for Police Lisa Neville has confirmed that the Government would be funding “thousands” of additional police in growth areas.

The spotlight of the nation turned on the PRC’s sparkling new home in Tynong as the club hosted the first metropolitan raceday in its history.

Sunday night group attack A MAN from Hampton Park has been left seriously injured after he was assaulted by a group of people on Sunday night. The 30 year old man was set upon by at least two members of the group at about 8.30 pm on Simon Court on Sunday 4 December. The two group members hit him repeatedly with a blunt weapon around the head and face. The man received extensive injuries and was taken to the Dandenong Hospital in a serious but stable condition. Nathan still laid back By Cam Lucadou-Wells IT’S slow, languid and sweet like the most glorious of mornings. Sixteen-year-old Narre Warren North composer and sublime talent Nathan Iuoras’s 1940s-style jazz ballad Morning Song won the Monash University Emerging Jazz Composer Prize 2016. The deeply-layered work harmonises soft strings, an angelic voice, muted horns and sax with a lilting percussion. “It’s a standard orchestration for a

ballad,” Nathan said. “I was going for a laid-back type of sound.” It was created while Nathan studied in this year’s Accelerando musical incubator program run by the Melbourne Recital Centre. Nathan was the first and only composer accepted into the accelerated learning program, which took in just five musicians in this year’s intake. The program has matured his compositions, he said.

His talented classmates inspired him with ideas and influences, while industry professionals have shared advice and insight. Asked for a music preference, Nathan leans to Romantic classical and Latin jazz. “I love far too much music, nearly every single genre. I can get something out of all of them.” Since he was a precocious five-yearold, Nathan nagged his parents to start piano lessons. He then took to it with aplomb.

At eight, he entered his first composition, Russian Puppets, which was runner-up for original composition at the 2009 Dandenong Festival of Music and Arts. From then, there have been a stream of composition awards and he has flourished under piano teacher Grace Pinkowski and Nossal High School teacher James Mustafa. Two of Nathan’s latest works will be performed by Accelerando musicians at the program’s private end-of-year concert.

A MAN has been arrested and is expected to be charged with sexual assault after he is alleged to have attacked a woman when acting as her driver in Berwick on 17 July. Police said the 26-year-old woman from Pakenham ordered a ride sharing service and got into the man’s car, about 1.30am on High Street, when the alleged assaulted occurred. The driver, a 40 year old man also from Pakenham, was arrested and interviewed by the Greater Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team on 14 October. He has since been released and is expected to be charged in relation to the offence.

New moves for roundabout By Cam Lucadou-Wells A NEW roundabout plan has emerged that could save the landscaped, bluestone wall frontage at a prestigious Narre Warren South estate. Melbourne Water has confirmed that it has been consulted by Casey council and developer Moremac Property Group about possibly moving a proposed widened roundabout further north at Greaves Road and Berwick Springs Promenade. The move would avoid having to demolish the bluestone wall and landscaped entrance of the adjacent Berwick Springs estate. Melbourne Water’s main concerns about changes to its plan are that flows in Hallam Valley Contour Drain are safely conveyed and flood levels are not increased.

The water authority’s preference is to keep the drain’s alignment, requiring developer Moremac Property Group to install culverts. Berwick Springs residents were outraged by an original plan to shift the roundabout south which would have meant that the bluestone wall entrance to the estate would have to be demolished. The roundabout, which was to be widened to two lanes, was part of Moremac’s plans to develop its Alira estate north of Greaves Road. Residents’ spokesman Michael Ball, who organised an on-site meeting of scores of residents on 5 December, said more than 700 petitioners opposed the demolition. Mr Ball said it sent a “huge message” that the issue wouldn’t be resolved until Casey listened to the residents.

“The community is very unified and no relocation of any shape or form will be supported by the community. “When is Casey going to consult residents? Without that consultation they will not get support.” Casey council had resolved to write to Moremac and the State Government to investigate a site for the roundabout which would not impact on the estate frontage. It has assured residents that the estate entrance, if demolished, would be restored to its current glory. Mayor Sam Aziz recently said the roundabout’s site was up to VicRoads and Melbourne Water. VicRoads has also signalled it would not take part in the project without community support.

CONVICTED Apex Gang abetter Susan Merrall has been ordered not to have unsupervised children at her home, at a hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 December. Merrall, 51, of Dandenong North, assured the court she was living at home alone but was handed the additional bail condition after turning up to court more than an hour late. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told her: “I don’t want to see one child at that address at all”. “It’s been really stressful for me with this media thing,” Merrall told the court. “ACA (A Current Affair) - that’s been very hard for me too. “It’s been very hard for my family as well.” Mr Vandersteen told Merrall that she’d brought it onto herself. Minutes after the hearing, Merrall stopped and gave a doorstop interview to TV reporters outside the courthouse. The court was told Merrall was facing a possible breach of her 18-month community corrections order.

Merrall had been sentenced on the order for reportedly harbouring goods stolen by socalled Apex Gang youth during a spate of home invasions in February. The court heard that she had breached the order by missing appointments with Department of Corrections, and being charged with shoplifting and driving offences. Her recent charges include stealing from The Reject Shop at Officer on 28 October and committing the theft while on bail. The alleged stolen goods were a black shopping bag, a red box-cutter knife, a network cable, an LED headlamp, laundry powder, three paint brushes, air fresheners, two torches, garbage bags and a universal TV remote. Merrall was also accused with driving while suspended, driving an unregistered car and displaying false number plates in Doveton on 20 September also while on the community corrections order. Merrall was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 22 December.

Letters Poor start IT IS concerning that less than a few months into the new term, the new council is considering applying for a variance to the rate cap after being rejected the first time. When was the community consultation to further spend thousands of ratepayer dollars to apply for this variation? It may only be a ’marginal variation’ to the yearly rates but has the council considered the pensioners and young families who might still struggle with the increase? The residents of the Berwick Springs estate are dealing with the aftermath of there being no community consultation to the reconstruction of their entrance, it would be a shame for the council to continue on with its theme of a lack of accountability and transparency so early into its term. AFTER returning home from his 1500 kilometre fundraising run, Jake Ward proposed to his girlfriend Jess Brown in front of family and friends but admitted he was nervous about popping the question. “I’m glad she said yes, it’s been nervewracking for so long because I didn’t think there was going to be this many people but imagine if she said no,” he said. “I’ve been planning to propose since our first date and always thought I would propose at the finish line but it was always a matter of finding the time.” After running for 30 days straight on his epic journey, Jake had let his beard grow and Jess said she could hardly recognise him. “He has changed with his beard growing out, that was very different in real life and I kept wondering if it was him under there,” she said. Jake, however, said he wasn’t a fan of the beard and he wouldn’t be holding onto it for very long. “The beard will stick around until tomorrow,” he said when he finally got a chance to sit down at home. “I can’t wait to get rid of it, especially since I realised I’ve got grey hairs. It’s gone.” A DANDENONG man has claimed he was drink-driving to escape racist abuse during a night out in Geelong. The man, who blew 0.167 and had never held a driving licence, claimed his passenger

was more drunk than him and unable to drive, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. After pulling the man’s car over, police observed the accused climbing out of the drivers’ seat into the back of the vehicle - however the passenger stayed in their seat. The man had been disqualified from driving after a high-reading drink-driving conviction in 2015. The judge noted the man’s excuses would be no comfort if he had killed someone while driving while he was so drunk. The man was put on a six-month community corrections order including 50 hours of unpaid work and alcohol counselling, as well as a road trauma awareness program. He was disqualified from driving for 32 months. A WOMAN has failed in her bid for a personal safety order against a Victoria Police officer who had evicted her from her home under a Sheriff’s warrant. The woman argued at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that she had never seen the warrant and was now unable to get in her house due to police changing the locks without her permission. In seeking to institute proceedings against the arresting officer, she accused him of acting out a “home invasion”. The magistrate noted a trust - of which the woman was a beneficiary - was the home’s true owner.

“In my view your application is vexatious, without substance, made in bad faith, without reasonable prospects of success and, on the face of it, an abuse of process.” A MAN has been freed from jail after languishing there for five and a half months for defaulting on tollway fine payments. The man was arrested by Sheriff’s officers and jailed when he got behind on his $1000-a-month payment plan, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. His lawyer said it was a concerning case, given the man had sat in jail for 155 days without appearing in court. “I don’t know how he went through (such a long time in jail) without getting any legal advice,” his lawyer said. “I believe there have been legislative changes so the Sheriffs now bring them out to a court first.” The judge expressed surprise the man spent so long in jail on “these type of matters”. He discharged the man from two-thirds of more than $60,000 owed to tollway companies. The man was also fully cleared of more than $30,000 in fines owed to Civic Compliance Victoria. “If there’s a (financial) crisis again you can always approach the court and vary the amount you can pay (on the payment plan),” the judge told him.

Triumphant proposal By Victoria Stone-Meadows IN a triumphant return to his mum’s house in Cranbourne, local legend Jake Ward has completed a marathon fundraiser for breast cancer research ... but that was just the half of it. An emotional Jake also took the opportunity to propose to long-time partner, Jess Brown. Jake ran a total of 1500 kilometres over a month starting at the Gold Coast and ending in his hometown of Cranbourne. Family, friends and supporters from all over gathered to cheer him along the last leg of his journey along Cherryhills Drive on Wednesday 30 November. Upon his long awaited arrival home, Jake was swamped by grateful family and he addressed the assembled crowd in his signature cheerful way. “I am blown away by how many people have turned up - but not one of you has offered me a beer,” he said. “It has been about 35 degrees every day, I had a pair of shoes melt which was bit of fun. “It was really hot long days but the local communities along the way were fantastic, but it has been a long 30 days and I’m not going to try to act tough, I could have cried a couple of times.” Jake said even though the run was really tough, he really enjoyed the journey and couldn’t thank those who supported him enough. “It was long, it was hard but it was worth it,” he said. “I really enjoyed every moment and didn’t think this many people were going to turn up and for one of the first times in my life I’m a bit speechless.” As if the day couldn’t become more exciting, halfway through his speech, Jake announced he had bought a pres-

It was then in front of the assembled crowd that Jake bent onto one of his shaking and weary knees to ask for Jess’s hand in marriage. Jake thanked all the people who had supported his cause along the way by donating to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and keeping him supported through his journey. He thanked his partner Jess for organising the accommodation along the way, his family members for visiting his during his journey, Jess’s father for the donations and fund-raising and oth-

er community businesses and organisations that helped him raise money. There was one person in particular Jake felt deserved a special mention and that was his mate and support car driver Luke ‘Twiggy’ Balcombe. “I have got to thank Twiggy,” Jake said. “I’m forever grateful for what Twiggy has done and we called him the silent partner because he doesn’t like being noticed. “Without him it couldn’t have been done, he kept me safe on the road and kept me from magpies and snakes, he would get out of the car and launch rocks, he was amazing.

"I was frustrating him the whole time but the guy just kept going and he never gave up on me. “He was even more than happy to drink beers along the way for me when I couldn’t - that’s a real great friend and I cannot speak more highly of him.” Jess said she was so proud of her partner and was feeling so many emotions after his arrival home and the surprise proposal. “I’m feeling amazing for more than one reason,” she said. “I wouldn’t never have guessed in a million years he would do that; I thought that today is his day and should have been all about him at the finish line but trust Jake, modest Jake.

“I’m so proud of him I have been crying for last hour for a mixture of emotions. I missed him more than I knew possible.” Jake’s mum Christine Ward said she knew her son would make it to the finish line of his epic journey no matter what. “I know what’s he’s like, he would crawl if he had to,” she said. “I’ve been so worried about him and he is such a great guy and does everything for others.” Over the course of his run from Queensland to Victoria, Jake raised $47,500 for breast cancer research.

THE Casey Cardinia Foundation presented grants to nine worthy community groups across the two municipalities at an event in Narre Warren on Thursday 1 December. Casey based community groups that received a boost in funding included The Cranbourne Uniting Church Food Truck, The Cranbourne-Casey Men’s Shed, Connections Uniting Care in Doveton, and Pearcedale based Beyond Disability. Representatives from the Uniting Church said the grant money they received will go towards operational costs of the food truck such as registration, fuel and disposable cutlery. The Cranbourne-Casey Men’s Shed has flagged its grant money for the installation of a kitchenette and dust extractors for its workshop. Beyond Disability, which supplies computers and an internet connection to Vietnam veterans, said its grant money

will allow it to keep more veterans connected through travel reimbursement, internet subsidies and the purchase of more laptops. Connections Uniting Care runs a service called the Enhanced Therapeutic Contact Service that allows children who live in out of home care and biological parents to re-connect and learn valuable skills. Kirrilee Torney from the program said the grant from the Casey Cardinia Foundation will be used to buy toys and sensory items which enrich the contact between parents and children. The grants were awarded to groups across the two municipalities that provide essential services and community strengthening. The 2016 Casey Cardinia Foundation Grant recipients work to improve the lives of residents across the south-east. Representatives from the organisations and board members of the foundation converged on the Waterman Business Centre in Narre Warren to participate

in the event. Foundation chairman Paul Thomas reflected on the work the charity has done over 13 years in supporting local groups and enhancing the communities of the Casey and Cardinia regions. Recipients of the grants included church groups, council backed organisations, scout troops and other groups that are working hard for their local communities. Each grant recipient spoke to how the grants from the foundation will improve their ability to serve, help and protect their communities through their ongoing work. The other 2016 Casey Cardinia Community Grants recipients were Pakenham Scouts, Garfield Scouts, Emerald Centre for Hope and Outreach, Communities That Care and St John Ambulance. Over 13 years, The Casey Cardinia Foundation has allocated about $443,000 to community groups in the Casey and Cardinia regions.

Man assaulted and robbed By Victoria Stone-Meadows A CRANBOURNE man has been assaulted and robbed while riding his bike on Duff Street about 6pm on Saturday 3 December. The 26-year-old man was

riding his bike in Cranbourne when he was approached by two men who got out of a vehicle, described by the victim as possibly a station wagon. The victim was then punched and kicked by the two men and also had a small amount of

Liam’s hair-raiser By Cam Lucadou-Wells IT’S been a kind of reverse-Samson effect for newly-shorn St Catherine’s Primary student Liam Campos. Rather than having his powers dimmed by shaving off his long locks, Liam has raised more than $1500 for men’s health and grown in stature. To loud cheers and applause by school mates, Liam shed two years of hair growth as Casey mayor Sam Aziz, councillor Amanda Stapledon, teacher Rebecca Keating, his father Fred and his brother Hayden shaved him down on 30 November. The event coincided with the quiet and determined young man’s 11th birthday. Liam had well exceeded his goal of $1000 for the fund-raiser - which he chose to perform after researching the deeds of the men’s health charity Movember Foundation. Liam’s proud mother Joanne said his compassion had been inspired by seeing his sister Francesca’s serious and complex battle with quadriplegia cerebral palsy. “The fact that each day she is with us is simply a blessing meant his whole outlook on life seemed to change,” Ms Campos said. She said Liam has different sensibilities to most. “For him to go out of his way to do this ... others his age wouldn’t think of doing it.” Orginally, Liam wanted to raise money for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance in support of Francesca, but at the time, his hair wasn’t long enough. After becoming aware of the Movember Foundation’s campaigns

Cr Aziz, fresh from using the clippers, said Liam was an “incredible young man and is to be congratulated on making such a huge commitment to help others“. “He is a great example of how young people in our great City of Casey are making a contribution to the community, even at such a young age.”

Have a bit of compassion!” Casey acting chief executive Sally Curtain said the council was “committed to finding a role for every redeployee”.

“Following a recruitment freeze over the past six months there are many more vacant roles than redeployees.” Ms Curtain said Casey had embarked on a significant organisational change to ensure the “most effective and efficient” frontline services to the community. “This carefully planned and staged major redesign is the first in 20 years and has been underway since January. “Some roles in HACC Services have changed including the creation of additional positions to ensure compliance with new Federal Government requirements.” It was also near the end of a three year Efficiency and Effectiveness program that made “significant” savings without cutting staff, she said.

IN a pre-Christmas blow, about 50 City of Casey workers’ positions have been made redundant. As part of a re-structure across the council, the “redeployed” workers - believed to be mainly managers, co-ordinators, team leaders and supervisors - have been invited to reapply for 90 vacant positions by 2 December. The council says it’s “committed” to finding each of the employees a new role among the apparent surplus of vacancies. But according to Australian Services Union organiser Ty Lockwood, there is no guarantee they’ll all have a job beyond Christmas. The workers were given vague descriptions of the vacancies, were unsure where they fit into the re-organised workforce and whether they’d land an equivalent position, he said. “People are losing their jobs through no fault of their own and may be forced to take a job they don’t like. “They’re expected to choose a job and they don’t have the information to make a decision. They don’t know what’s exactly involved in the role. “This is the hard line Casey is taking at the moment.” The workers felt deceived by the lack of consultation and updates since a re-structure was

Afghan fare’s nod to the West By Cam Lucadou-Wells WHAT would you choose - the chicken parma or the traditional Afghan lamb shank qabuli? Such is the bold menu that confronts diners at Samadi’z in Noble Park with traditional Afghan kebabs served with chips and green salad. Or pits diametrically-opposed options such as mantu dumplings or bruchetta. Interestingly, Assma Samadi says it’s the traditional food cooked by her father - known simply as ‘Mr Samadi’ - which is getting the most takers. She says a lot of diners from the non-Afghan community are giving Mr Samadi’s offerings a go because it’s served in such a Western manner. For 20 years, Mr Samadi has gathered a lofty reputation, catering for weddings and celebrations of up to 1000 people. The recently-opened cafe-restaurant is the first time he shares with the masses his exquisite skills

Pakenham Cup draws record crowd

HALL of Fame trainer David Hayes has continued his love-affair with Racing. com Park after Pilote D’essai’s breathtaking victory in the $200,000 Superior Food Services Pakenham Cup (2500m). Pilote D’essai, French for test pilot, gave Hayes - a future resident of Racing. com Park and leading trainer at Australia’s newest racetrack - his second win in the cup after Sure Cut’s victory in 1995. The spotlight of the nation turned on the PRC’s sparkling new home in Tynong as the club hosted the first metropolitan raceday in its history ... and Hayes and Pilote D’essai stole the show. Hayes trained four winners and believes his five-year-old gelding can kick on to greater glories after a big win in front of a record crowd of 7188. “He’ll be a very reliable horse over 2000-metres and beyond,” Hayes said after Saturday’s win. “Probably in the spring we were running him a bit short, as it’s turned out, but hindsight’s a wonderful thing. But we can give him a month on the water walker now, put him in the paddock and set him for a nice race in the autumn, either the Australian Cup or the Peter Young. I really do feel he’s in the class of Spillway and he’ll deliver on it.” Jockey Regan Bayliss rode a heady race on the five-year-old gelding, hunting forward to lead past the post the first time before settling back to as far back as fourth before the field turned for home. Bayliss regained the lead from challengers Puccini, Little White Cloud and Lord Van Percy in the straight and galloped away for a soft two-and-a-half length victory. Bayliss was pumped after the race, querying the judgement of many experts who refused to buy in to his dominant Ballarat Cup form. “An awesome win, a lot of people wrote this horse off,” Bayliss said. “I’ve got to be honest the stable definitely still had faith in him and I couldn’t believe they wrote him off. He’s a very under-rated horse, he’s been labelled a bit of a cat in his past runs, but I can’t see why. He’s had no luck in any of his runs and now that he’s got to his right distance he’s proved a lot of people wrong today.” Hayes was the dominant trainer at Pakenham’s first metropolitan grade meeting, training four winners in succession with Snitzson $7.00, Mihany $2.50, Pilote D’essai $5.00 and Grande Rosso $11.00 giving him a stunning quartet of victories. Hayes, who has purchased two trainer allotments at Racing.com Park, will set up a satellite training facility at the course, training up to 60 horses there. Hayes, who trains in partnership with son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig, will commence construction at Tynong in approximately 18 months’ time. The other star on the day was jockey Craig Williams, who rode a double for Hayes on his way to four winners for the day. Williams was full of praise for the Pakenham Racing Club as he returned to scale aboard Gallic Chieftain after the last. “It’s been a great day on the track for me, but let’s put things into perspective, it’s been a great initiative,” Williams said of the PRC’s move from Racecourse

SATURDAY’S maiden standalone Cup meeting at Racing. com Park has been lauded as a success by Racing Victoria (RV) and the Pakenham Racing Club (PRC) in light of positive wagering data and a recordbreaking attendance. Initial figures indicate that total wagering turnover across all operators at Racing.com Park on Saturday was $28.9 million, representing an increase of 1.2 per cent on the corresponding race meeting at Sandown in 2015. Total turnover for Saturday’s feature event, the $200,000 Listed Superior Food Services Pakenham Cup (2500m) was $4.8 million, up significantly on the 2015 figure of $1.88 million when the meeting was held on a Sunday. The PRC also reported that more than 7000 people attended Saturday’s Cup meeting, the club’s highest attendance since racing commenced at Racing. com Park in March last year. RV Chief Executive Bernard Saundry said the strong wagering figures and healthy trackside crowd left little doubt about the success of the standalone Cup meeting and believes it won’t take long for the meeting to become a highlight on the Victorian racing calendar. “On initial inspection of the data, we are delighted with how Saturday’s Pakenham Cup meeting performed, both in terms of wagering and attendance,” Saundry said. “Punters, racing fans and the local community voted with their feet on Saturday and a record crowd enjoyed a fantastic day of metropolitangrade racing in a relaxed country setting at Racing.com Park. “The Pakenham Racing Club should be congratulated on hosting a fabulous raceday and I think we can safely say that the meeting will quickly become a highlight on the Victorian thoroughbred racing calendar.” Pakenham Racing Club Chief Executive Michael Hodge said the PRC committee was delighted with how the day unfolded. He heaped special praise on a hard-working team that helped the day to be a success. “It was a huge day and with that comes some associated risks, the eyes of the industry were on Pakenham on Saturday,” Hodge said. “We had a catch up after the last race with about 50 of our team and I gave it to them honestly. They all nailed it, every team and every department worked together brilliantly and I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts.”

But this, if you want to build a new track this is how you do it.” Williams said the vision of the PRC was most impressive. “They had the foresight and they put their money up,” Williams said. “They’re obviously very good at investing because they had good land before, and Racing Victoria and the government have come out to invest in the track and the facilities. And have a look at the crowd. Skipper and Pakenham Premier all-rounder Zac Chaplin was again a shining light with the bat with his 41 from the top order, while Cardinia’s Brody Pearse was particularly impressive with a hard-hitting 62 opening the innings. Some valuable lower-order hitting - led by Chaplin’s Pakenham club-mate Jack Melbourne (32 not out) - took the visitors’ total above 200, but it was with the ball that the Warriors really shone. In a performance that clearly would have impressed their coach - local seam bowling legend Greg Bethune - Cardinia spinner Travis Wheller (2/31); Seagull trio Tim Lenders (2/1), Kade Burns (2/50 from 8 overs), and Matt Welsh (1/34); and Melbourne (1/23 from 7) were outstanding as a bowling unit playing on a ground with one of the quickest outfields they’ll ever experience. Davies stars in Twenty20 action By Russell Bennett HUGE centuries to an Emerald allrounder and Gembrook’s marquee player were the highlights of the opening round of the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup. Heinz Southern Districts all-rounder Michael Davies was simply devastating for the Brookers as their marquee player against the Marygoons at Nar Nar Goon. He blasted an unbeaten 104 as the visitors reached 2/169 in their 20 overs, before then finishing with 4/4 as the Marygoons were rolled for 65. Emerald, meanwhile, was just as emphatic in their Round 1 - thumping Aura Vale at Chandler Reserve. Dogs go to the carnival! THE Warragul and Cranbourne tracks will form the heart of an exciting new series launched last week by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV). Four regional clubs will make history with the new carnival, which is set to take Gippsland by storm. In an Australian regional first, the Gippsland Carnival will incorporate and connect four country cups - Sale, Warragul, Cranbourne and Traralgon - with more than $800,000 prizemoney across the series. Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy, who was born and bred in Warragul, is the ambassador for the carnival and helped launch it in Seaspray last Thursday. A sprint and distance series has been created to link all four legs with a Gippsland Champion Sprinter, and Gippsland Champion Stayer, crowned at the end of the carnival. The Sale Cup will kick off the excitement with its traditional race meeting on Boxing Day, while Traralgon will wrap it up with a grand finale in March. The middle legs will be the Warragul Cup on 28 January and the Cranbourne Cup on 9 February. GRV chief executive officer Alan Clayton said he was excited to continue supporting clubs, their fans and their communities. “The economic benefits of greyhound racing to the Gippsland economy is around

Big year for Matt By Russell Bennett FROM winning Paralympic gold to now being named as a finalist alongside his Australian wheelchair rugby team mates for Team of the Year at the Australian Paralympic Awards - it’s been one hell of a year for Pakenham’s Matt Lewis. But it all could have ended five years ago when he was very nearly killed in a horrific backyard explosion in Cannons Creek. Lewis’s story is one that can hardly be believed, but by the same token it’s one that could belong to anyone. Lewis lost his fingers and both of his legs in the incident at a point in his life in which he admits he was “pretty down”. But, remarkably, it started a chain of events that led to him jetting off to Rio as part of the Australian wheelchair rugby team for the Paralympic Games. Lewis told the Gazette just hours before taking off in his quest for gold that the month-long induced coma he was put in following his accident showed that he desperately wanted to live. “I’d say it’s a miracle,” he said. “I’ve got faith in God, so for me that’s the context I understand this all through.” Lewis said that after his coma he started to “say yes to life” again. After the lengthy rehabilitation process that followed, he got involved in the sport of wheelchair rugby - affectionately known as ‘murderball’. He played a crucial role in helping the Australian team - the Steelers - to victory at Rio, defeating Great Britain, Brazil, Canada, Japan and finally their great rivals the United States 59-58 in a double-overtime thriller in the gold medal game. In doing so, Australia became the first team in history to win consecutive Paralympic golds and a world championship in a four-year period.

By Nick Creely Pakenham’s Matt Lewis won gold at the Rio Paralympics earlier this year. 158957 Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT Lewis’s outlet prior to his accident was music - specifically playing the guitar - but he’s since learned to harness both his creative and analytical side through the action-packed sport of wheelchair rugby - a mixed team sport for both male and female athletes. “Created by athletes with a disability, it combines elements of rugby, basketball and handball,” the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) website says. “Players compete in teams of four to carry the ball across the op-

posing team’s goal line. Contact between wheelchairs is permitted, and is in fact an integral part of the sport as players use their chairs to block and hold opponents.” Developed in 1977, the sport now has over 25 countries competing on the world stage. “What I enjoyed about guitar was the different tricks you could do with the instrument, so I’ve kind of taken that aspect to rugby,” Lewis said. “It’s artistic, and it’s skilful - it’s

just in me and comes out anywhere I go.” Lewis’s wheelchair rugby journey started shortly before the London Paralympics, and it was watching some of his friends in action on TV that planted the seed for him to want to do the same in Rio. “From there on I subconsciously and consciously made steps in that direction,” he said. The Australian Paralympic Awards will be held in Sydney tomorrow, Thursday 8 December.

Raising awareness (and funds) for Goannas By Russell Bennett WELL in excess of 250 people went along to the Colosseum at Cardinia Life on Saturday to watch the Pakenham Warriors Big V Youth League men’s side take on the Australian Goannas in their first official lead-up game to the Deaflympics in Turkey in January. In a real coup for basketball in the south-east, Simo Pajdic’s Warriors took on the Goannas in a bid to raise some much-needed funds for the fully self-funded national side. The Goannas are one of the most improved deaf basketball teams anywhere in the world and the side is made up of arguably the best deaf athletes throughout Australia. Given that players are from all corners of the country, they come together once a month at their training base in Melbourne for a weekend before resuming their normal club duties in their home states. Because there is no funding available for the team, players split the expenses for training camps - things such as airfares, food, and accommodation - to keep the costs down as much as possible. More than 250 people raised over $1600 for the Goannas on Saturday, with Ash Mason of Stockdale & Leggo in Pakenham, Pakenham Optical, Carolyn’s Boutique, Citrus Graphics, Aligned Leisure, Kanvas Kids and Dizzy Jo’s Heat Packs also donating towards the raffle prizes on offer. Aligned Leisure also donated the use of the facility, the referees, and the score bench officials while a number of volunteers also donated their time to the cause.

REPRESENTING Victoria in a national competition is a wonderful achievement especially if you’re just ten years of age. For young Oatlands Primary School student and Narre Warren resident Harvey Anderson, he was one of only a few Victorian athletes to head to Sydney from 25-29 November. The competition, which was headed by School Sport Australia, has been a major breeding ground for budding Olympic teams in Australia, and this year’s crop is set to follow the same path. Chosen on the Track and Field team, it’s been a whirlwind twelve months for the young 800 metre runner, who has enjoyed the experience. And at the championships, Harvey rose to the occasion, against some of the nation’s most promising young runners, and said having support from some important people in his life helped him perform at his best. “I came sixth in my heat - and twelfth overall in Australia,” he said. “The experience was really fun and the track was awesome. “My sports teacher Ms Gamble has been awesome for me, as well as my parents and grandparents. “Ms Gamble actually flew up to Sydney to watch me run - it was very nerve-racking; I was under a lot of pressure, but that helped me having her there watching me.” Harvey said that his parents, especially his dad, and a certain Jamaican sprinter helped push him into athletics, and from there he gained the appetite to work hard and strive to get the best out of himself. “I’ve been into athletics since last year Dad used to be a very good runner so he got me into it,” he said. “I like 800 metre the most but I also like 1500 metres and I also can do sprints as well. “Usain Bolt is my favourite runner and I want to be as quick as him - there is no one else I like to watch run more than him. “I did five weeks of training before going and then I had states before that which was really hard - I train for an hour three times a week, but I love to do it.” And now Harvey is aiming high, with another potential national competition on his mind. “Next year is the Pacific Games against Kenya so I’m aiming for that - they are great long-distance runners, and it will be a tough challenge, but I just have to keep working hard,” he said.

Ben Maroney in fine form By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW ROUND 7 (DAY 1) A GLORIOUS century in the Premier Division by Cardinia’s Ben Maroney (114) has put his side into an ominous position in their clash with Pakenham/Upper Toomuc. The Bulls champ was in fine touch, combining with Neil Barfuss (42) and Ricky Campbell (55no), to post 6/269 before deciding to have a crack at the Yabbies batsmen before stumps. Yabbies quick Ben McLeod (5/85) was a star, toiling hard all day for his team and bowling a whopping 25 overs. Then disaster struck, as the Yabbies lost two early wickets in the form of Daniel Strahan and Nick Kyval, who both fell without troubling the scorers. At stumps, the Yabbies are 2/26, with victory looking unlikely, but not impossible. An even day of cricket between Emerald and Merinda Park has set up an intriguing contest at Chandler Reserve. Bombers skipper AJ Walker elected to bat, and despite some fantastic new ball bowling by Daniel Diwell (6/43), the Bombers amassed a highly competitive and tricky total of 187. Andrew Alenson (46) top-scored for the Bombers, while Geordie Scott (39) and Clinton Marsh (35) played solid supporting knocks. With the ball, Cobras star Diwell was electric, while Leigh Paterson (3/64) got amongst the wickets. The Cobras are currently 1/33 off 17 overs, with Clinton Marsh taking the early scalp of Daniel McCalman (2). An upset is potentially brewing, with Upper Beaconsfield taking it right up to Kooweerup in their clash at Kooweerup Reserve. The Maroons elected to bat, and despite a few early wickets, were able to steady through the reliable Jonathon Caderamanpulle (77) and Matt Curtain (27). They ended on 179 off 59.1 overs, as Jess Mathers (4/71) starred for the Demons and newcomer Jack Bacon (2/11) showed promising signs. With a tense 17 overs to play out, the Demons struggled, but despite the Maroons bowling with great intensity, walked off the ground relatively unscathed at 1/43. Skipper Mark Cooper (22no) is looming as a big wicket for the Maroons next week. And finally, the round’s blockbuster clash between Tooradin and Pakenham is set to go down to the wire, with very little separating the two sides. The Seagulls elected to bat at home, as Russ Lehman (62) played strongly at the top of the order, to guide his side to a trick 178. Tom Hussey (25) and Aaron Avery (25) were also strong contributors with the bat. Lions bowler Chris Savage (4/22) was on song, while Tom Tyrrell (2/46) was also amongst the wickets. The Lions then lost an early wicket, courtesy of Cal O’Hare (1/5) to be sitting at an uncomfortable 1/10 at stumps. With a top spot up for grabs, next weekend’s run chase is set to be intense, in what is perhaps an entree for things to come later in the season. In this week’s action of the District division, Devon Meadows have punished a disappointing Tooradin side, banking first-innings points at Glover Recreation Reserve. The Seagulls elected to bat, and after a horror start, including the loss of star opener Kane Latham (0) second ball of the match, couldn’t quite recover, limping their way to just 112 off 36.1 overs. Panthers champ Matthew Hutchinson (6/23) was in fine touch, removing the top three batsmen early in the piece, before returning later to remove the dangerous Seagulls skipper Ben Mantel (26). The Panthers were then flawless with the bat, as Lucas Carroll (82no) and Brad Miles (77no) lifted them to an imposing 2/216 at stumps. Kalgidhar continue to electrify with the bat, and this time has whacked 7/374 in their clash with Cranbourne Meadows at Lawson Poole Reserve. After five wickets tumbled relatively early, the Swamp Tigers dug deep, as Caddell and skipper Ayden Mills put on a brave partnership to rescue them from embarrassment.
