Proud to the corps By Monique Kuzeff IT’S a rare event to have five significant army logistic corps banners paraded at the one occasion. But that’s exactly what happened at Gaza Ridge Barracks, South Bandiana, at the weekend as the Army Logistic Training Centre celebrated its 21st birthday. About 700 army, navy and air force personnel marched in military precision welcoming senior guests, including Chief of Army Angus Campbell, through formal salutes. The five banners paraded were from the transport, medical, catering, electrical and mechanical, and ordnance corps. The parade also marked the 35th anniversary of the “Royal Australian Army” ordnance corps being bestowed the Sovereign’s Banner by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A combination of about 300 civilians and dignitaries attended the event that saw several weeks of prepping and rehearsals. “We carried out two full rehearsals on Saturday morning to ensure we delivered the best standard we could,” Colonel Andrew Maclean said. “All those involved were fabulous, I was very proud of each and every one of them.” The parade was the largest to have been held in the area in recent times, Colonel Maclean said. “The five corps banners are the heart and soul of each of the corps’ historic link to the days of Colours and troops would rally around the Colours to defend them,” he said. “That tradition still lives on in the army, which has been bestowed upon them.” The four Colours represented the “rally point” - the focal point of the regiment during the chaos of battle. It represents one of four distinctive forms

The other three Honourable Insignia are Standards, Guidons, and Banners. The Army Logistic Training Centre was formed on 1 December 1995 for the purpose of providing a more effec-
tive logistic training. Each year, the centre trains about 7,800 students and delivers around 334 different courses and 29 trades, Colonel Maclean said. “This base is the home of military logistics in Australia,” he said

Big cash boost for TAFE By Monique Kuzeff HAVING achieved the best student satisfaction ratio of all TAFEs in Victoria, it’s fair to say that Wodonga TAFE deserved its recent multi-million injection from the State Government. The $6.3 million announcement came as part of the Andrews Government’s election commitment two years ago to “restore” and “rebuild” vocational education training (VET). Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney visited Wodonga TAFE on Tuesday to make the announcement on behalf of the State Government, saying with the boost Wodonga would have a “leg up” when it comes to providing VET for the local economy. “It will mean that we will have very highly skilled apprentices and have trainees in the system that will meet the demands of the local economy,” Ms Tierney said. “Wodonga TAFE has done a fantastic job of working with the local community - making sure the needs of the industry are met. This extra funding will make sure it can continue to do that into the future.” Ms Tierney said for young persons who were disengaged or who might be leaving school and seeking a handscareer, VET is “transformational”. “It’s also an opportunity for older workers to retrain and other workers who have been retrenched to retrain as well.” Additionally, Wodonga TAFE received a further $600,000 for new teaching equipment that would ensure students are training with the latest industry equipment. Wodonga TAFE will direct that money towards fitting out a new nursing simulation laboratory and purchase rollover prevention and vehicle stability training equipment.

Border has homeless too, says CEO By Monique Kuzeff A $109 MILLION injection in to Victoria’s homelessness services comes as the biggest investment response to the sector in the state’s history, says Rural Housing Network (RHN) CEO Celia Adams. The multi-million package was announced last week by the Victorian Government and aims to support some 19,000 people who are at risk of homelessness, young people and veterans. While details of exactly where the funding will be directed is still yet to be announced, Ms Adams is urging the State Government to “really consider” regional homelessness and ensure it gets its “equal share” of the funding. “On the Border we have over 600 people each year who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or experiencing housing stress and that’s a significant portion of our population who are disadvantaged or in need,” Ms Adams told Albury Wodonga NewsWeekly. “We also have an issue with youth homelessness on the Border so response there will have a huge impact for us.” The announcement was also joined by a further $185 million that will go towards redeveloping over 1100 public
housing homes in metropolitan areas. “These two things combined represent a really significant investment for the most vulnerable people in Australia,” Ms Adams said. “It’s about providing an integrated response because the issue isn’t just homelessness, but also unemployment, drug and alcohol, and family violence issues that can lead to someone’s homelessness.” Ms Adams highlighted that family violence was the “leading cause” for homelessness of women and children saying the figure is “undeniable” and that the public housing was a positive for the homelessness sector. “When you’ve been abused or perhaps had money denied to you and you may not have the resources to support yourself away from the family home, sometimes leaving is the only option.” “Family violence often leads to homelessness so the two need to be well resourced.” The RHN is the largest rural and regional homelessness service in the region managing over 700 properties and provides support services to 4000 people annually including Seymour, Wodonga, Shepparton and Myrtleford.

come,” he said. “We (AWH) intend to build on this arrangement and support our patient flows as well as increasingly improve the use of telehealth for larger hospitals in metropolitan areas.” Tallangatta Health Service CEO Denise Parry said the service was designed to support the current services provided by local doctors and reduce the need for them to provide on-call after hours. “Through AWH telehealth will enable us to link into a doctor immediately to have a look at the patient and assess them to determine whether they can be managed locally or need to be transferred to a hospital.” The service will be available to patients after-hours on weekdays, weekends and public holidays.

PATIENTS in rural communities such as Tallangatta and Corryong will no longer have to travel to get urgent after-hours care. A new partnership has been formed between local healthcare services and telehealth services. Tallangatta Health Services and Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) are now delivering telehealth services which uses high quality video technology to provide telemedicine, medical education and health education over a distance. This means that patients who live in the rural communities are able to receive the after-hours urgent health attention they might require without having to travel out of town. Whether the patient is suffering from acute exacerbation of asthma or a urinary tract infection, telehealth will provide the patient with a face-toface video consultation with a general practitioner. North East Health Wangaratta’s telehealth manager Jane Kealey said telehealth would make a huge difference for towns in the region that may not have a doctor to link to after-hours. “It’s a huge support to the communities because it means that they can go to their own local urgent care centre and get urgent medical care there after-hours without having to travel to Wodonga or get their local doctor out of bed,” Ms Kealey said. “Also, if it’s more urgent and there is no ambulance in town to take very unwell patients to hospital, the doctors in the emergency department can provide support to the staff via video and manage the patient before the ambulance arrives.” For AWH CEO Leigh McJames, telehealth will serve two purposes - it

In its first event this year, Jayco Albury Wodonga took out the Corporate Challenge that involved many businesses who got on board the healthy fund-raiser and Jayco Albury Wodonga Dealer principal Michael Houlihan hopes to win it again.
“The inaugural cup is in our hands, and we’re not that keen to give it back to anybody either, so we hope to win it again next year,” Mr Houlihan said. “The Corporate Challenge is a great thing for staff to get involved in and this year they raised a further $1300 through raffles.” Johnsons MME saw 15 employees participate in this year’s event, and is looking to increase its participation this year, Johnsons MME Partner Ryan Schischka said. “It’s just an overall fantastic day out and a great opportunity to get outside and active and on top of that, the AWRCC which it supports is such a fantastic facility for the area,” he said. Road key to unlocking jobs By Monique Kuzeff NSW Deputy Opposition Leader Michael Daley says a lack of good representation is what is failing to secure the appropriate funding to complete the Davey Road interchange upgrade. Mr Daley joined AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack, Labor councillor Darren Cameron and Albury Labor duty MLC Shaoquett Moselmane at the Hume Highway Davey Road off-ramp on Wednesday indicating that the upgrade was back on the agenda. The $14 million upgrade was put on hold after the State Government failed to match the Federal Government’s $7 million contribution in July last year and since then it has been a rollercoaster for AlburyCity to obtain the shortfall. Mr Daley said that if Albury MP Greg Aplin and Premier Mike Baird cannot deliver the necessary funding for the region, the NSW Government could be at risk of facing a massive swing against it in the next state election. “If Greg Aplin and Mike Baird can’t deliver that funding for Albury then the people of Albury, like the people of Orange, might well find someone who will,” Mr Daley said. “Clearly something’s not right in the region or we wouldn’t be seeing swings of 35 per cent against the Nationals.” When asked what efforts he could impose as the Opposition to get any kind of funding, Mr Daley said that he would write to Roads Minister Duncan Gay and “demand” he deliver the funding to finish the upgrade.

The upgrade is forecast to support an additional 300 jobs in Albury, plus more if the commitment from a service station provider in recent applications carried through, Cr Mack said. “We already had a commitment from a service provider to build a service station centre here,” Cr Mack said. “Forty or 50 jobs straight away - we had that in writing to the State Government and they still didn’t see it as a positive. “For me 300 jobs for Albury right now will be absolute filler.”

Pedal power PEDALLING into its 17th year, the 2017 Johnsons MME Lake Hume Cycle Challenge will be introducing some new rides to the great community day out. The annual event, which will be held on Saturday 26 February, was launched this week at Noreuil Park where a ‘Chill Zone’ will be set up on the day from 11am to 5pm for anyone to come and enjoy great food, beverages and live entertainment beside the iconic Murray River. Participants will be able to choose from an additional two rides in the upcoming event which are a 143 km Gundowring Grail course and a 90km Kergunyah Kruise that will take you through the stunning Kiewa Valley. A record number of about 650 people got involved in this year’s event raising $25,000, but Lake Hume Cycle Challenge committee chair Ian Moffat hopes that number is exceeded. “This year we are aiming for 1000 participants, and in the next event we hope to get donated well over $30,000,” Mr Moffat said. “All of the money raised will go to the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund and the Border Trust and will stay in the local district.”

Drown-proofing our kids a winning strategy By Monique Kuzeff POOLS, rivers, creeks and dams are all major risks for young children who don’t know how to swim, and that’s why learning to swim at an early age is a vital lesson for young children. This was the main message delivered by swim safety ambassador Laurie Lawrence upon his visit to the Border on Friday. Mr Lawrence joined Health Minister Sussan Ley at the Albury Swim Centre to raise awareness on the importance of swimming lessons and promote the Federal Government’s ‘Saving Lives in the Water’ campaign. Various bodies of water make up the Border region in which the most river drowning deaths were recorded between 2002 and 2012, flagging the Murray as the number one river drowning hotspot in Australia. “We are in one of the most beautiful parts of the world but the river is dangerous, your backyard is dangerous, your farm is dangerous particularly for nought to five-year-olds,” Ms Ley said. “So with Laurie Lawrence it’s all about do the five, stay alive, and please watch your children this summer. In the last 10 years, 471 children aged from nought to 17 have drowned in Australian waterways with just under half occurring in regional areas where there are rivers, creeks and streams. Mr Lawrence couldn’t stress enough the importance of teaching kids how to swim in a “fun and safe” environment and at an early age. “It’s very important when you start teaching children to swim at an early age that they’re introduced into the water gradually,” Mr Lawrence said. “If kids have a bad experience, pretty soon they don’t want to get in to the water so the first introduction

Good calls BARANDUDA Range, BeechworthWodonga Highway, Tallangatta Valley, Tallangatta South and Omeo Highway have been selected as five of eight areas in Indi to receive new mobile base stations under the second round of the Mobile Blackspot Program. Others areas were Kevington in Mansfield Shire, Mt Dom Dom in Murrindindi Shire and Wandiligong in the Alpine Shire. The allocation is a quarter of 32 in total for Victoria. A total of 266 mobile base stations have been allocated across Australia in this round. It brings the number of additional mobile base stations for Indi under the program to 38. “This is great news, following effective lobbying and a strategic approach to telecommunications in Indi,” said Indi MP Cathy McGowan. The Indi Telecommunications Action Group developed a whole-of-Indi plan on mobile blackspots. Sites for consideration in round two were submitted in January this year. “While this is a welcome announcement, there is still work to be done,” she said. “There will be continued lobbying to the government for commitment to further mobile blackspot funding, and improvements to digital equity through the NBN.” Residents, businesses and visitors are already benefitting from improved mobile coverage from round one. The Tatong base station was launched in October, and Devil’s River will have its official launch on 15 December.

Win gives Albury wings By Monique Kuzeff ALBURY Airport is flying high after it took out the 2016 Largest Regional Airport of the Year award at the National Airport Industry Awards last month. The accolade was awarded to AlburyCity by the Australian Airports Association (AAA) on the basis of council’s Aviation Strategy and Marketing Plan that aims to boost passenger growth, ensure sustainability of existing airline capacity and expand the current route network to and from Albury. Since the strategy plan was implemented Albury has seen a 5.5 per cent increase in passenger numbers in the first half of this year.
This was helped by the introduction of the airport’s fourth airline Jetgo, an Albury to Brisbane service, which took off in June. Albury mayor Kevin Mack said the award was the result of a “whole lot of factors” and testament of the work carried out by the staff and council. “It’s certainly endorsing of the great work the staff at the airport do and the plans for the future,” Cr Mack said. “It’s got a lot to do with the way the airport is being developed and the attraction of it to customers, “Also the general work and energy put into the development of the precinct is what stood it out from other regional airports.” The award is highly competitive

Cash flood AN ADDITIONAL $2.5 million in funding will go towards repairing roads in Albury and surrounding districts that were affected by the recent flooding. Albury Council is one of five councils in the electorate to receive $500,000 of immediate funding to undertake the repairs to the damaged roads. Albury MP Greg Aplin wel-
comed the funding, saying the immediate relief would help the councils repair the road network as quickly as possible. “I have encouraged councils in the electorate to apply for natural disaster relief but this additional relief funding will allow for immediate repairs on an increasingly strained local road network,” Mr Aplin said.
“Our region has been hit hard by the severe flooding and our roads have taken a real battering. “The flooding has seen many detours in place and with more heavy vehicles on the roads during the harvest there will be more stress on council roads.”

Pension pinched via the new assets test By Monique Kuzeff THERE will be both winners and losers as the new pension assets test changes come into effect on 1 January next year. While some retirees may feel that the impending pension changes will provide an opportunity to re-evaluate their finances and consider lifestyle changes such as downsizing, some self-funded retirees may find that they’ve sustained financial losses. The changes, which were announced in the 2015 Federal Budget, adjusted the amount pensioners can own in solid and liquid assets to remain eligible for the full entitlement of the pension income. For single homeowners, for instance, the current
assets threshold sits at $209,000 with the proposed threshold to increase to $250,000. Currently, every $1000 over the asset threshold reduces the pension payment by $1.50 but post 1 January pensioners will see that every $1000 over the threshold will reduce their pension payment by $3. What this means is that for the single homeowners who own assets over the current threshold ($209,000) but under the new proposed threshold ($250,000) will now get more pension as they will not be docked for being over the threshold. However, those who own assets over $250,000 will have their fortnightly pension payment reduced by $3 from every $1000 they own over the threshold - that’s double the reduction.
Aged Care Gurus over 55s finance expert Rachel Lane, who was guest speaker at Ingenia’s Pension Changes Seminar in Thurgoona in October, said there had been a lot of concern around the changes which come as the “biggest changes” to the pension in the last 10 years. “Last time we had changes like this was in 2007, so there’s going to be some serious impacts on people’s pension entitlement and there’s a lot of concern round what that means for people,” Ms Lane said. “The winners will be people who fall into that band and who are currently over that asset test but will be under the new asset test threshold; in fact, they’ll actually get more income. “When the new assets threshold
comes into effect, once you tip over that threshold the pension payment will be reduced by $3 for every $1000 worth of assets per fortnight.” Ms Lane said pensioners were most concerned about the rate at which the pension payment was being reduced. “(It’s) $3 per $1000 per fortnight and if you look at it as a rate of return on your investment you need to be earning 7.8 per cent on your investments to replace your lost pension. “It’s very difficult for pensioners who have fairly conservative investment portfolios to get 7.8 per cent return on their investments and that means then that they are dipping in to their capital.” She looked towards downsizing to
lifestyle communities such as Ingenia Lifestyle Albury as a strategic manoeuvre for single homeowners in order for them to become eligible for rent assistance, along with a variety of other benefits, such as no stamp duty fees. According to Ms Lane, the pension changes come from government trying to send the ageing population two key messages. “The first thing is to expect things to keep changing and for retirees to supplement the pension and not just purely rely on the pension for income. “The government doesn’t just want retirees to only invest in term deposits and bank accounts but to take control of the income side of the equation that they can influence and manage.”

IT has been a fantastic year for Riverwood which has seen 10 new residents move in to the village in 2016. And recently, the retirement village held another successful open day on 4 November that saw interest from many new people and people who had previously been to open days and are eager to make the move. Our debt-fuelled economy no benefit Contributed by Emily Kuzeff AUSTRALIANS love debt. Debt buys them their house. Debt helps them acquire their new car. For some, it also finances their trips around the world. The mere suggestion that debt is a bad thing is often greeted with a blank expression or a dismissive attitude. Because in Australia, for at least the past three decades, debt has been the norm. In fact, Australia’s household debt ratio stands at 180 per cent today, the highest in the world. Yet, the idea that wealth cannot be printed, or loaned, into reality is dismissed as the uncomfortable, idiotic premise of some contrarians who just don’t seem to understand the Australian debt-fuelled way of life. It’s a better attitude to just shrug
your shoulders at the figures referring to the mounting level of household debt in Australia, and sign that 30 to 40 year mortgage. Because all things being constant, you should be able to own your own home by the age of 60 or 70. But when you look at the reality of the situation, which most people today are averse to doing, you realise that this strategy, which might have worked in the past, might not be so feasible today. Recently, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that global debt stands at around USD $152 trillion (AUD $204 trillion), or to put it in perspective, more than twice the size of global GDP. Additionally, on a global scale, the USD $500 trillion of outstanding derivatives based on bond yields alone account for almost seven times world

GDP per annum. So not only is Australia sinking under the weight of its own debt, the rest of the world is also. Yet, we are continually being consoled that we shouldn’t worry because ‘there are signs of growth in the global economy’. If you think perpetually low interests rates (and in some countries negative interest rates) are indicative of global prosperity, think again. In a desperate effort to stabilise the world economy after the financial crises of 2008, governments in tandem with the central banks have been pursuing extreme inflationary monetary and/or fiscal policies. The United States Government has nearly doubled its public debt since 2008, by printing over USD $9 tril-
lion through their quantitative easing programs. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank (ECB) has been injecting 60 billion euros into the economy per month through its asset purchase program to keep the economy afloat. These same inflationary policies have allowed for increases in major asset prices around the world. In Australia, specifically real estate prices have shot up during this period. This is because many people in Australia, encouraged by low interest rates, have been accessing money almost too easily. Subsequently, most people have been putting these new funds into real estate, stock markets, or government bonds, hoping for yield. But here comes the clinch. With government debt, corporate debt and household debt standing at record lev-
els worldwide coupled with extremely low levels of economic growth and productivity, the reality is our ability to service that debt is rapidly diminishing. Australia doesn’t exist in isolation and with China’s debt to GDP approaching 300 per cent today, we will not have China to weather us through another financial crisis. And the warning signals are flashing that the situation is much worse than it was back in 2008. So where does that leave us? It might be a good time to consider, just in case things do not remain constant, how this might affect your ability to service your own debt. Because at the end of the day, forewarned is forearmed. It is important not to see the world as it is comfortable to see it, but as it is in reality.

Wicked auditions tops By Tania Phillips MORE than 160 Border performers turned out to the Wodonga Senior Secondary College theatrette over the weekend to audition for sought-after roles in the Albury Wodonga Theatre Company’s 2017 production of the hugely successful Broadway musical, Wicked. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, the story centres on Elphaba, the misunderstood, smart, and fiery girl of emerald-green skin who grows up to become the notorious Wicked Witch of the West and Galinda, the beautiful, blonde, popular girl who grows up to become Glinda the Good Witch of the South. AWTCo’s choreographer, Susan Vaccaro said the auditions attracted a lot of interest. “People auditioned from as far as Perth, Wangaratta and Mt Beauty as quite a few also emailed in video auditions,” Ms Vaccaro said. “The response has been overwhelming, with AWTCo having to conduct call-backs this week because the talent on offer was so outstanding.” Albury Wodonga Theatre Company will announce the cast of Wicked at the end of this week, and rehearsals are scheduled to begin in late January 2017. Wicked will be staged with four evening performances on Wednesday 17, Thursday 18, Friday 19, Saturday 20 May 2017 and two matinees performances on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 May 2017 at the Albury Entertainment Centre, Swift Street, Albury. Queen hailed Queen of Katwe (PG) Starring: David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong’o, Madina Nalwanga SOMEONE hurry up and make David Oyelowo James Bond already. The 'Selma' actor has such a presence on screen it’s hard to ignore him. Here he plays Robert Katende, a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess - including 10-year-old Phiona Mutesi (played by Madina Nalwanga). While this is based on the true story of a young girl living in the impoverished slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda and also stars the luminescent Lupita Nyong’o has Phiona’s mother Harriet it is Oyelowo as “coach” who gives the movie its heart and just enough gravitas. Directed by Mira Nair, this is a movie from Disney and at times feels like the chess version of Cool Runnings or even Eddie the Eagle. However there is something a little raw and very African about this film that keeps it PG but doesn’t dumb it down or make it too schmaltzy. The abject poverty and the struggle to escape it is beautifully covered without trivialising what they go through. An orphan himself who

made it to university and topped his engineering class, Oyelow’s Katende hopes to help the poorest children in the slum by teaching them chess, a game that requires concentration, strategic thinking and risk-taking - skills they need just to survive their everyday lives. Recognising Phiona’s fighting spirit, inherited from her widowed mother, Katende begins to mentor her and his wife teaches her to read and write to prepare her for school. Phiona quickly rises through the ranks and gives her family the potential to escape poverty. It’s an uplifting story, well told, beautiful shot which stops just short of being turned into a schmaltzy feel-good movie

According to the race director, it is the toughest course in the recent history of the race since it was revamped and will be a treat for local fans. Featonby recently signed with Drapac Pat’s Veg after completing his first year at the top national level in cycling.

It has been 12 months of learning, setbacks, developing and good results. This time last year he lined up for the Tour of Bright as an individual, managing to pick up 4th on Mt Hotham. Twelve months later he rode in support of teammate Chris Harper who took out the overall title. ‘Chris Harper won the timetrial, so the plan was to work for him. On stage 2, three guys went up the road and it was down to our team to chase. It was
three against three, and then Chris smashed up Tawonga gap in under 20 minutes to get second on the stage. He then won the final stage up Hotham to take the overall.’ Featonby transitioned from a solo rider to his current team in April. This was after an initial setback at the January nationals where ironically a Drapac rider caused a crash and he was unable to finish, missing the opportunity to shine in front of the national teams.

Sharks snap up one point lead in pool THE Sharks and Pool Pirates continue their battle for second place with the Sharks taking a narrow one-point lead following their tough Ovens And Murray Senior men’s round nine game at the weekend in Albury. The Sharks moved into second place with a very tight 6-4 victory over the Pirates in their match on Sunday morning. Earlier in the round, competition leaders the Albury Tigers proved they will be the ones to beat for the title this year with a comprehensive 21-3 win over Northside Stingrays at Wodonga. The Tigers now lead with 23 points with Sharks on 18 and Pool Pirates on 17 and Northside on 14.

The sport, which was once affectionately called Murderball, was there as part of Victoria RSL Wheelchair Basketball and Rugby Adaptive Sports, Come and Try Weekend at the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre. The event involved getting a chance to work on

TOUR de France star Chris Froome and Giro d’Italia runner-up Esteban Chavez will be racing on our local roads in February as the Herald Sun Tour makes a welcome return to the North East. As an international category race, locally registered continental teams may be invited, and local interest will be on whether Neil Van Der Ploeg with his Avanti IsoWhey Sports team and Jess Featonby with Drapac Pat’s Veg get a start on their local training grounds. Stage one is from Wangaratta to Falls Creek, providing a treat for hill climbers like Featonby and the chance to match themselves against the early season form of the grand tour champions. Stage two will be an interesting test of the peloton, starting in Mt Beauty and racing north along the back roads, picking up plenty of smaller climbs and likely resulting in a few locals losing their Strava KoMs. Near Tallangatta, the race will double back and head south, past Yackandandah, turning off before Myrtleford and commencing the main climb of the day up Mt Stanley. The hill, while not as long as stage 1, has some steep ramps and a long drag before a final downhill finish into Beechworth. Anyone who has ridden that road, can imagine that a small group with a gap on a shattered peloton over the top of the hill and enough commitment
He bounced back in March, taking the KoM title up Mt Buller, resulting in offers and signing with the Suisse Wellness team. Racing in a team was different, with the preparations and the opportunities. In May, Featonby started two internationally ranked races in Indonesia, getting a top 10 result, before crashing heavily on a big descent. After a broken hand and ribs and some weeks off the bike recovering, he rebuilt the fitness, and won the stage up Black Mountain in Canberra against the best national riders. As Featonby described it, ‘That was a special result. I lived there for five years and trained up Black Mountain. You can only win up there if you are riding well.’ That result no doubt contributed to the Drapac offer and the opportunity in 2017 to race nationally, in Asia and probably a stint in Europe. For Featonby though, the local scene is just as important. You can catch him this Wednesday out at the Albury Wodonga Cycling Club Criterium championships at the driver training complex near the logic centre. Racing starts at 6pm and expect some fierce competition in each grade for the championships title. While the A grade men captured much attention in the Tour of Bright, other local riders, Paul Fleming won the overall category in his Masters race, and Julie Nixon took out women’s C grade. Other result included Charly McMillan picking up third in his Timetrial on stage 1.
