PLAY on pako

Library has stacks of fun GEELONG West Toy Library celebrated 30 years of play last month - with one local family using the facility for three generations. Drumcondra grandmother Colleen Battye joined the library a year after it opened with daughter Kristen. Back then her daughter couldn’t wait to jump into the library’s cubbyhouse and peddle cars, or have a go at a jigsaw puzzle, she said. “It was just the excitement of seeing all the toys and getting to choose one to take home.” She remembers fire destroying the library in the early 1990s. But with the library’s insurance, the blaze was a blessing in disguise. “We got all new toys,” Colleen said. “We quickly got things moving again.” Colleen signed up Kristen’s threeyear-old daughter to the library as a Christmas present last year. Visits with her mother and grandparents have become a regular fixture for Hailey who, like her mother, loves scooting around in the library’s peddle cars. “She doesn’t want to leave,” Colleen said. “It’s a friendly community and everyone is so welcoming.” Mother-of-two and library coordinator Sarah Crofton has been involved with the facility since her sevenyear-old son was a baby. “You meet lots of other parents,” she said. “It’s been really fun.” And, of course, her children have enjoyed it even more. “It’s a great outing for the kids and they get a new thing to play with every time,” she said.

PLAYTIME: Nancy and Calista Ge, Sarah Crofton, Cyndy Scherer, Harry and Grace Gofton-Gates, and Cat and Bohdi McKenzie celebrated Geelong West Toy Library’s 30th birthday recently.

“It really encourages them to share and it gives them a sense of responsibility to look after the toys.” The library committee recently created a list of 30 reasons to borrow, like creating less landfill, saving money and never worrying about kids outgrowing a toy. Sarah was amazed the local

community had kept the library running for so long without any council or government support. “I hope it can run for another 30 years,” she said “We’re always keen for further economic support as the costs to run the library are upwards of $2500 a year.” Seven local families created the

FRESH on pako

New owners keep it fresh NEW manager Abdul Najeeb is looking forward to continuing 37 years of local tradition at V&R Fresh Food Market. His family bought the business in December 2015, taking over from the Palamara family. “It’s still a real family business,” he says. He runs the store with his cousin, who travels to the Melbourne market five days a week in search the finest local fruit and veg. “That’s how we get the freshest produce,” Abdul says. “Everyone needs fresh food.” However with the store’s rebranding it will soon have some new additions, Abdul said. The store’s new seafood cabinet offers the freshest fish straight out of Port Phillip Bay, he said. White Fisheries, which has fished out of Drysdale since 1983, supplies the store daily with salmon, prawns and more from local waters. The store has just finished work on its “state-of-the-art” delicatessen, Abdul says. “We’ve got the finest gourmet food from local suppliers and across the world.” Despite the new owners and logo the store has retained most of its staff, who have served Geelong West shoppers for

a decade or more. “They know what they are doing,” Abdul says. Geelong West’s Serena Vezmarovic has worked at the store for 14 years and wouldn’t work anywhere else. “I wouldn’t stay here if

I didn’t like it.” For Serena it’s a pleasure to service Pakington Street customer. She and her fellow workers offer them service “they don’t get anywhere else at the moment”. She says she gets all her

produce from the store. “What do you think I do? Go to the supermarket?” The store will hold a “grand opening” on 5 November, including face painting, a fundraising barbecue, tastings and store-wide specials.

Abdul was keen to promote his new grocery lines and organic and gluten free products “We make sure customers get the best quality for the best prices,” he says. “Once they come in they’ll love it.”

GOOD HEALTH on pako

The fruit of their research Deakin University wants people from Pakington St to help with a study that could be potentially vital to the advancement of mental health. TROPICAL fruit mangosteen pericarp could be an effective treatment for schizophrenia, according to research. Director of the Centre for Innovation in Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Treatment (IMPACT) Professor Michael Berk says Deakin University’s School of Medicine has partnered with Barwon Health to conduct a trial on the effectiveness of the fruit in reducing symptoms of schizophrenia. “We are trying to see whether this plant-based extract would help people with schizophrenia if you take it together with standard medication,“ he says. The study stems from research which has found evidence to suggest the rind of the fruit from the mangosteen tree contains bioactive compounds that may be beneficial in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, which may in turn reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia. “We wanted to do a definitive study to prove this.” Director of the Queensland Centre for Mental Health John McGrath is also recruiting in

Queensland for the study. The researchers hope to recruit people from the community who have diagnoses of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder to take part in the trial. “We would like 150 people

to participate and ideally, an even balance of females and males, although schizophrenia is more common in males than females.” Professor Berk says the mangosteen pericarp fruit is “quite tasty – it tastes like a cross

between a lychee and a banana.” The notion that the fruit rind could be an effective treatment for schizophrenia comes as no surprise to the professor. “When you think about it, historically, most of the

medicines we have are plant derived. “Many anti-cancer drugs also come from plant-based sources and aspirin comes from willow bark. There is a very rich tradition of plant-based materials having positive effects on health.” Professor Berk says the treatment will involve participants taking either a fruit extract capsule or a placebo in addition to their existing treatment. “There will be no disruption to their existing treatment; hopefully there will be an additional benefit.” “We really just want to get across a message of hope. “There are people committed to developing new treatments and there is hope that people with these conditions could be assisted by a program that aims to develop these treatments.” VitalXan is supplying the extract. Those who are 18 years or older and who would like to take part in the trial can contact Bianca Kavanagh for more information by phoning 4215 3301 or emailing bkavanagh@ barwonhealth.org.au

FASHION on pako

Right up there for fashion ELISSA FRIDAY COMPLETING a three-year course in millinery was vital to the business of Geelong’s Irene Moore. But 25 years making calisthenics costume pieces for her four daughters was the real inspiration for Moore Millinery Designs, Irene says. “The costume and headwear experience was where it sort of started, why I wanted to go into the millinery business.” Irene went back to school for the course she finished last year to ensure her perfection in millinery, she says. She also wanted to remain creative after her now-grown-up girls finished calisthenics. “I looked into it, found out there was a course at Kangan institute and did the three years. I completed certificates two, three and four and graduated last year. “I’m not saying that I have a style yet because I’m still new at the game. It’s my daughters who encourage me to go out of the box, out of the square.” Irene makes headwear as an aside to her job in payroll at an engineering company. “Millinery’s my job Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, more so on the busier periods.” Irene begins her clients’ bespoke pieces with sketches on paper at her home studio in Hamlyn Heights. She rarely makes two pieces the same. “Everything’s hand-sewn, hand beaded - I love beading,” she explains. “Sisal’s another material I like to use, and felt, which I used for a man’s fedora I just finished.” Irene considers trimming the trickiest part of her craft. “I love wire-work. It allows

HORSEPLAY: Irene’s daughter, Andrea, encourages her mother to create unique millinery pieces.

you to be very creative doing all varieties of shapes. “I also love boaters - they’re very on trend this year.” Irene’s says the 2013 Geelong’s Cup Fashions on the Field helped her understand the “who and what” that inspire her millinery. “My two younger twin girls made top 10. I think that to make top 10’s brilliant on its own. “Then the following year in 2014 Andrea won and Courtney came third”. Courtney was second in 2015 but won Derby Day the same year and backed it up with victory in this year’s Adelaide Cup Fashions on the Field. Andrea was second in this year’s Geelong Cup Fashions on the Field and won its People’s Choice award. Irene is proud of her girls’ cup day achievements. “They’ve both been doing quite well in fashions on the field,” she says. Irene, Andrea and Courtney work together on their cup outfits, sourcing material and sending designs to a dressmaker. “We give her our sketch and material and work together with the outfit,” Irene says. “Then we make sure there’s always enough material left so we can match the headwear.” Andrea and Courtney are “so involved” in Moore Millinery Designs, Irene says, “which I absolutely love”. The girls are “basically my PAs and are IT savvy”, she says.

HERITAGE on pako

Saving the history of Djillong GEELONG West’s One Fire Reconciliation Group received a $9000 grant from Australia Post this month, for its work promoting local Indigenous history. Secretary Vicky Grosser said the money would fund One Fire’s new project - Djillong: Our History, Our Story, Our Future. “We’re thrilled to receive this grant which supports our work with local Aboriginal communities,” she said. “This funding will help us to create unique local Aboriginal history resources.” One Fire, with the Wathaurong Aboriginal Cooperative, will fund a Geelong team to create a DVD recording local Indigenous history. “It’s all local people being employed and contributing to the program,” Ms Grosser. The DVD would help “fill the gaps most of us didn’t learn when we grew up”, she said. It will explore the history through the eyes of the Wathaurong people and local historian Ron Milligan. Ms Grosser said this would strengthen One Fire’s efforts toward reconciliation in Geelong, known as Djillong by its first inhabitants. The group will also update its website, which it began several years ago.

“

This funding will help us to create unique local Aboriginal history resources…

Wathaurong woman Corrina Eckles said the DVD would be a valuable resource about local Aboriginal groups, including those that lived in Djillong. “It’s really important for people to be educated about local Aboriginal history,” she said. “Through sharing the stories from our old people we record them and create timelines through the future.” “The Geelong region has a large population of aboriginal people, who also want to learn more about this valuable culture.” Australia Post managing director and group CEO Ahmed Fahour congratulated the group. “We heartily congratulate all of this year’s successful applicants including Geelong One Fire Reconciliation Group for their work in connecting people,” he said.

HERITAGE: One Fire Reconciliation Group recently won a $9000 grant to share Geelong’s Indigenous history.

PREGNANCY

Allira Potter, Instagram @grub_guide

Feel it in your bones Grub Guide’s ALLIRA POTTER shares a healing recipe bound to warm readers to the bone. HELLO foodies, How are we all? Spring is in the air and summer is on the way, I can feel it. Wouldn’t you agree the sunshine definitely helps uplift everyone’s moods? Everyone seems to be happy, more active and ready to tackle the day ahead. I know I have been feeling a million bucks lately ... and I’m partly thanking Mother Nature. This month I thought I’d share a recipe made by my husband Nate. He works as a chef down the coast and is often in the kitchen experimenting with food and creating unique recipes. This recipe is a little different, it’s a bone broth ... I know what you’re thinking bone broth, really? Yes really! I have a few friends who swear by it and say the benefits are endless from assisting with gut health and healing your overall insides. “I don’t know many nutritionists that won’t recommend bone broth to anyone who will listen, because as far as food-asmedicine goes this is the bomb! “When cooked over a long period of time, the bones in the broth release

minerals that are easily digested to help repair the gut lining, improve immune function and even help with joint pain and brain function. Drink straight-up or as the base in a soup, at least a couple of times a week, to feel the beautiful effects of this liquid gold.” – Libby Morgan Nutritionist from the Nourishing Kitchen Nate decided to give it a go and make it, he bought grass fed bones from Pako meats which cost about $8, you can ask your butcher for them and he will cut them up smaller for you to put in a large pot. He then went to Geelong Fresh Foods and collected his vegetables and apple cider vinegar. This is the type of recipe where it needs to be cooked over a certain period 24-48hrs for maximum flavour, but you can cook for a certain period, let it cool then sit in your fridge until you are ready to cook it again. When the broth is cooked you can drink the broth that is what I have been doing every morning (warm up on the stove), otherwise you can make a noodle soup with it. Happy cooking.

Method

YOU will need one large pot and spoon: · 3 Kilograms of Organic Grass Feed Beef Bones · 3 Carrots · 4 stalks celery · 1 Brown Onion · 1 bunch of parsley · 4 cloves garlic · 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar 1. First off cook the bones in the oven until golden brown 2. Place bones in pot cover with water, add vinegar this will release nutrients from the bones, let sit for 30 mins. 3. Chop up vegetables however you like, remember this will all break down into your broth. 4. Place all vegies (carrot, celery, onion) in the pot and place the pot on a low heat for 24 hrs (we did this over 24hrs in blocks, the first 2 hours the top will start layering with fats and impurities use a ladle to take this off, you can take your broth off the stove to cool and leave it in the fridge overnight then re-heat the next day if you dont want to leave the pot on the stove for 24hrs straight). 5. Towards the end of the 24 hrs, add the garlic and parsley. 6. Once completed strain this through a strainer and jar up to cool, done ... your bone broth is ready to drink. If you have any questions in regards to the recipe feel free to contact us via Instagram @_Chefnate & @Grub_guide

Are you pregnant or perhaps thinking of becoming pregnant in the near future? You may or may not have been told about pregnancy multivitamins and other supplements which may be beneficial to you and for your baby’s development. It is a good idea to start taking a pregnancy multivitamin three months before you even start trying to get pregnant; this is to make sure that your body has the right levels of nutrients ready to supply a growing baby as soon as you conceive. The main recommendation you may get is to make sure that you are taking folic acid. This is to prevent your baby developing neural tube defects, 500mcgi daily is needed. Some people will also be advised by their doctor to supplement with iron however if you have not been advised to do this by a doctor then there is no need as unnecessary iron supplementation can lead to lower copper and zinc levels in the blood.ii There are a few things that I would recommend that aren’t generally “prescribed “as such, but do have good evidence behind them that they can be very beneficial for bub. • Iodine - most pregnancy multivitamins in Australia will contain this in high enough levels, 220mcg is the recommended intake for a pregnant woman. This has gone up in recent years so double check that the brand you are taking has adjusted their quantity. • Fish oil/DHA - According to the world health organization, pregnant woman should be taking at least 2.6g of omega 3 fatty acids and 100-300mg of DHA daily to look after the needs of the fetus.iii DHA is the primary omega 3 fatty acid in the grey matter of the brain so it is essential for brain and visual development during pregnancy. The easiest way to get high doses of DHA is to get a good quality fish oil, some brands do specifically make high strength DHA fish oil for this exact use. • Probiotics - A study conducted on over 30,000 pregnant women found that probiotics during pregnancy decreases the chances for preeclampsia by 20%iv. There is also evidence that taking probiotics is effective in the management of acute gastroenteritis, antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and intestinal inflammatory disorders, such as Crohn’s disease and constipation in pregnancyv. Pregnancy specific probiotics are available with strains targeted to a pregnant woman’s requirements. Please come in and have a chat with me any time about pregnancy care. PARTY on pako

Launch night with sparkle MORE than 50 people flocked to Newtown to check out BLT Jewellery’s launch party last month to try on flower crowns and head pieces. BLT Jewellery business owner Breanna Timmins, a jeweller by trade, says say has only recently started making flower crowns and headpieces out of metal. “The launch party was to launch my new collection, it’s different to what I normally do,” Breanna says. Newtown florist As Daisy Does hosted the event - held on 12 October, from 6pm to 8pm – inside its rustic shed, complete with springtime flowers and drinks and nibbles. “I really wanted the headpieces in her shed, it has nice greenery everywhere.” Highlights of the night included trying on the headpieces, drinking champagne and enjoying local gourmet produce.

WHAT DO WE WANT? Clive Hamilton (NLA Publishing) CLIVE Hamilton explores the colourful, enthralling and stirring forms of protest used in the big social movements that define modern Australia. He includes dedicated chapters on the peace movement, women’s liberation, Indigenous rights, gay rights and the environmental movement, and examines how these movements have confronted the ugliness in Australian society and caused epoch defining shifts in social attitudes. He describes protests with scores of thousands marching or sitting down in the streets of capital cities; colourful camps of a handful of protestors in Australia’s forests, singing at bulldozers and blocking paths; acts of bravery by individuals using technology to disrupt stock markets or coming out on television; as well as vigils, leafleting, street theatre, occupations and myriad other creative forms of protest.

HARMONY IS SUCCESS Ken McLean (A&A Book Publishing) WHEN people have achieved a certain level of mastery and artistry in their chosen expression they will often fall into this state and achieve an effortless flow in what they do. Whether it’s a great surfer on a wave, an artist creating a painting, or a business person doing a deal, there are times they experience this flow or oneness that is deeply nourishing and inspirational to them but moves others around them also. This is the purpose and the art of living; that this oneness or flow state can be practiced and created anywhere and at any time to turn the everyday ordinary experience into the extraordinary. This is the real meaning of living life to the fullest and the true and most effective way of creating world peace and having human beings living together as one world family.

PASSCHENDAELE Paul Ham (Pan MacMillan) PASSCHENDAELE epitomises everything that was most terrible about the Western Front. The photographs never sleep of this four-month battle, fought from July to November 1917, the worst year of the war: blackened tree stumps rising out of a field of mud, corpses of men and horses drowned in shell holes, terrified soldiers huddled in trenches awaiting the whistle. The book tells the story of ordinary men in the grip of a political and military power struggle that determined their fate and has foreshadowed the destiny of the world for a century. Passchendaele lays down a powerful challenge to the idea of war as an inevitable expression of the human will, and examines the culpability of governments and military commanders in a catastrophe that destroyed the best part of a generation.

HOME Harlan Coben (Randompress) TEN years after the highprofile kidnapping of two young boys, only one returns home in Harlan Coben’s next gripping thriller. A decade ago, kidnappers grabbed two boys from wealthy families and demanded ransom, then went silent. No trace of the boys ever surfaced. For 10 years their families have been left with nothing but painful memories and a quiet desperation for the day that has finally, miraculously arrived. Myron Bolitar and his friend Win believe they have located one of the boys, now a teenager. Where has he been for 10 years, and what does he know about the day, more than half a life ago, when he was taken? And most critically:What can he tell Myron and Win about the fate of his missing friend? Drawing on his singular talent, Harlan Coben delivers an explosive and deeply moving thriller about friendship, family, and the meaning of home.

THE BOOK OF JOY Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu (Randompress) TWO great spiritual masters share their own hard-won wisdom about living with joy even in the face of adversity. A big birthday inspired two close friends to get together in Dharamsala for a talk about something very important to them. The friends were His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The subject was joy. Both winners of the Nobel Prize, both great spiritual masters and moral leaders of our time, they are also known for being among the most infectiously happy people on the planet. Both the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu have been tested by great personal and national adversity, and here they share their personal stories of struggle and renewal. Now that they are both in their eighties, they especially want to spread the core message that to have joy yourself, you must bring joy to others.

LIVING DESIGN Jamie Durie & Nadine Bush (Penguin) INTERNATIONAL award-winning designer and TV host Jamie Durie has long been passionate about creating outdoor rooms - luxurious living spaces where we can cook, eat, bathe and sleep outdoors - but he is equally driven to create interiors that bring the outdoors inside. Over the last decade his work has evolved from landscape design into a very successful furniture and interior design practice. At the heart of his design philosophy is his belief that the closer we live to nature, the happier we feel. Living Design explores ‘Transterior’ homes where the interior and exterior of a home merge. In this book Jamie, along with Durie Design’s creative director Nadine Bush, showcases exceptional houses from around the world, including Jamie’s own, and demonstrates innovative ways to integrate nature into the home with plants, colours, textures, materials and architecture.
