Fags and booze By Aneeka Simonis A DANGEROUSLY prolific culture of smoking in Cardinia Shire coupled with alarming rates of alcohol abuse has painted a grim picture of the community’s collective health. The region was last year predicted to be home to more than 17,000 smokers - making up a fifth of the entire municipality. And the nicotine addiction strike rate was greater than the state average, with just 13 per cent identified as ‘smokers’ in the VicHealth Indicators Survey 2015. And it seems cigarettes aren’t the only legal drug residents are vulnerable to. More than 9000 residents’ health was also identified as being at a “very high risk” of harm as a result of excessive drinking. Close to 10 per cent of residents report drinking 11 or more alcohol drinks on a single occasion each month, putting them in the most dangerous category for short-term health harm. Just over a quarter - or 27.4 per cent- were also identified as being at ‘high risk’ of short-term alcohol-related harms for drinking five or more alcoholic drinks on a single occasion each month.

Smoking was by far the leading cause of death in residents in Cardinia Shire when compared with drug and alcohol deaths and road fatalities, according to the most recent local government data provided by Cancer Council Victoria. The municipality ranked in the top 20 per cent of Victorian regions most affected by smoking-related deaths, with 13 per cent of all deaths attributed to smoking in 2008. The VicHealth report is conducted every four years to help measure factors impacting individual and community wellbeing. The area’s legal substance abuse figures were alarming, but other health measures including mental wellbeing show encouraging results. Cardinia Shire residents were recorded as being slightly more resilient than the average Victorian and ate roughly the same amount of fruit and vegetables. Local residents feel slightly safer walking the streets alone at night, but felt a little less engaged with their neighbours. They recorded marginally lower scores when asked if they trusted their neighbours, and whether they considered their neighbourhood as being tight-knit.

We know there are at least 150 of them in the local area.” The Race Car simulator proved to be quite popular and kept the younger attendees amused as they tried to keep the car on the race track. THE inaugural Pakenham Car Show invited car lovers to show off their “pride and joy”, attracting a varied display of classic and competition cars. The event, held at Toomuc Reserve, had inspired car enthusiasts to travel from as far as Bacchus Marsh. But event committee chairman Tony Murray said the weather had been unkind on Sunday 13 November and dramatically reduced attendance numbers. He said that more than 90 cars were showcased when organisers had expected closer to 400. “The rain cleared later in the day but people look out the window in the morning and see the rain, and make a decision on whether or not they’re going to come,” Mr Murray said. “Some cars are open too, so understandably people are wary about them being damaged in wet weather.” The committee faced other challenges in the lead-up to the event, when two advertisement banners featuring a race car graphic had been stolen; one from Toomuc Reserve on the Princes Highway and another near McGregor Road. Eric Spokes had recently finished restoring his Chev pick-up. He also displayed his FJ Race Car. Meanwhile, Craig Rogers travelled from Bacchus Marsh to show his 200-plus mph Salt Lake Racer, which was a stand-out display. The freshly purpose-built rail style car was speed limited to 200mph, but he hopes to do more than 250mph at the next outing in South Australia. Syd Lewis’s 1948 Mark 4 Jaguar featured at the show in its first outing since he completely restored the vehicle himself. “This stunning red and off-white Jag is one of the best you would see anywhere,” Mr Murray said. “There were some impressive bikes - including one 400km/h Salt Racer and some interesting

Can humans keep up? By Alana Mitchelson FUTURIST Chris Riddell believes the greatest restriction is no longer technology, but the ability for human beings to embrace change rather than trying to stop progress. Riddell, who recently spoke at the Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast, keeps across the latest trends in technology around the world that he believes will shape the future. He stressed the importance of forward-thinking and embracing technology when it comes to business strategies, as well as the way people approach their personal lives. “Today technology is challenging industries to adapt to big changes, sometimes in a timeframe of less than a year,” he said. “This is a new normal. “Your business’s ability to adapt to change in this revolution of experience will define and shape the next 100 years.” Riddell asked the audience to think back to the release of the first computer game, Pong, which involved a dot bouncing back and forth across the screen. He said this simple game showed people where the world was going. “Technology offers us an insight into what lies around the corner,” Riddell said. “The company 23andMe has changed the future of the healthcare industry by its ability to provide customers with their DNA profile. All people need to do is spit in a test tube. “If you have a partner, they can also obtain their DNA profile and tell you what kind of children you will have.” Riddell described the current era as the revolution of experience. Ahmadiyya gives deeper insight into Islam THE Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Victoria hosted 25 Cardinia Shire residents at its Bait-ul Salam (House of Peace) mosque in Langwarrin on Saturday 19 November. The tour, which was organised by the Cardinia Interfaith Network, aims to give residents an opportunity to visit places of worship of local faith communities. Imam S. Wadood Janud, Imam of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Victoria and Tasmania, greeted and welcomed the visitors. On his brief introduction of the tour, Imam Janud talked about the history of the Baitul Salam building. He said that the maintenance of the mosque and running of programs were managed entirely by volunteers. Visitors proceeded to the prayer area of the mosque where Imam Janud delivered a talk on the basic teachings of Islam. He began by explaining the meaning of Islam, which literally means obe-

dience and peace. He said that the followers of Islam were called Muslims. The study of Islam is divided into two broad categories, namely, the articles of faith and acts of worship. Imam Janud began by discussing the six basic beliefs of Muslims: unity of God, His Angels, His Books, His Prophets, The Last Day and Divine Decree. Imam Janud spoke on the five fundamental duties to be performed by Muslims, that is, declaration of faith, prayer, almsgiving, fasting and pilgrimage to the Kaabah at Mecca. He said that these practices were intended to purify the soul and body of a Muslim. Visitors had the opportunity to observe how a Muslim prays in a mosque. At the end of the talk, visitors asked Imam Janud various questions about Islam. Why Muslims pray facing the Kaaba? Why do Muslims have to pray five times a day? Why do Muslim men

wear hats in the mosque? What is the concept of fasting in Islam? These questions showed the keen interest the visitors had in learning about Islam. An exhibition was on display, showcasing the teachings of the Quran on a wide range of topics including science, environment, interfaith, humanity and women’s rights. Visitors had a unique opportunity to see sample copies of the Quran in different languages. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has translated the Quran into over 70 major languages of the world. Guests were served a delicious lunch while also having ample opportunity to interact with members of the community. Thanking the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community for its hospitality, Ms Glenda George, Cultural Diversity facilitator of the Cardinia Shire Council said: “I just want to say a big thank you to Tahir (secretary for Outreach Pro-

grams). I think everyone had a fabulous time. The hospitality, everytime I come here, is always spectacular. Your food is superb. And I can only say we all walk away with a big smile on our faces. Speaking about how impressed he was with Imam Janud’s presentation, Mr Vinod Mishra, a Pakenham resident said: “I was very impressed the way he talked about his presentation about Islam and Muslims. He didn’t mention the word Ahmadiyya, Shia or Sunni. This is really good. I really like the fact that he focuses more on the core values rather than what separates them.” Another resident, Ms Leah Ritchie, also had a few nice words to say about Imam Janud’s presentation. She said: “His presentation was fantastic. It was easy to understand. He is really a good speaker. Very engaging. I could have listened for another two hours. He is brilliant.”

Women are confronted by an intruder TWO young women thought they were home alone when they woke to a disturbing noise in the hallway of their Pakenham home. They were confronted by a man who quickly fled out the front door of their Harrison Way home about 11.30pm on Sunday 20 November. Police said the 22 and 27-year-old women were in their bedrooms when they heard the noise, and came out to see the man standing before them. Daylight robberies By Victoria Stone-Meadows CASEY Crime Investigation Unit is on the lookout for a group of young men who are committing daylight burglaries in the South East suburbs. The group have burgled properties on Arena Parade in Officer, San Fratello Street in Clyde North, Rosebank Drive in Cranbourne North, Crestway Drive in Cranbourne North, and Sussex Avenue in Cranbourne North. It is believed the five young men have been travelling around the Cranbourne, Clyde and Officer areas in a stolen 2005 model silver Holden Commodore. The car was reported as stolen from the Officer area on Thursday

17 November and involved in a petrol drive-off in Narre Warren at about 3pm that day. It is believed four young men of African appearance and one of Maori or Islander appearance have committed four burglaries in the South East between Thursday 17 November and Sunday 20 November. The group has been seen casing people’s properties and waiting for the households to be empty, usually between the hours of noon and 4pm, kicking in the front door and ransacking the houses. The young men have been targeting items such as car keys, jewellery and any other valuables in plain view around the house. Casey CIU Detective Acting Se-

nior Sergeant Michelle Chiang said police urge everyone to have a security door installed at their houses. “We would love for everyone to get a security door and need to hide valuables when they aren’t home," she said. “In these new housing estates, people don’t tend to have them because they have very nice looking new front doors they want out in the open." Det Act Sen Sgt Chiang also said people should be wary of suspicious behavior in their neighbourhoods. “People also need to be vigilant of youths hanging around their streets," she said. “Victims of these burglaries have

noticed groups of youths watching their houses and we believe they are casing them for when the victims leave.“ Police have confirmed these crimes appear of an opportunistic nature and although the young men are operating in a group, there doesn’t seem to be any connection to known criminal gangs. “These crimes are definitely opportunistic,“ Det Act Sen Sgt Chiang said. “They are sitting, watching and picking soft targets where the security is not at it’s best and looking for vulnerable points of entry. “They are not necessarily organised."

The Cranbourne Garden Club hosted the Blooming Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Cranbourne Public Hall on Thursday 10 November. Mayor doesn't add up CASEY residents should be concerned about the reappointment of councillor Sam Aziz for two key reasons. The mayor has shown that he prefers a leadership model that is management centred and not driven by what the residents of Casey want. Despite the results from focus groups and â€œconsultationsâ€? with ratepayers last year, indicating that ratepayers preferred the council to work within the ministerâ€™s 2.5 per cent rate cap, the mayor and Casey council still applied to the Essential Services Commission for a significant rate variation to fund non-urgent projects. This was subsequently rejected by the commission which stated that Casey had a very healthy budget surplus. Secondly, the reappointment of Cr Aziz as mayor has happened without any formal debate and discussion on council, with one councillor saying he felt he had to agree because â€œI believed Sam Aziz had the numbersâ€? and that any dissent was pointless. This seems to me to be an unhealthy decision-making process. In future, Caseyâ€™s management will only need to say that Casey needs higher rates for projects and none of our fearless councillors will have the initiative to explore alternative ideas or stand up to the conventional wisdom. A 90-YEAR-OLD man from Cranbourne had a lovely treat on his milestone birthday when his family paid him a surprise visit from his homeland of Holland. John Van De Beek wasnâ€™t expecting to spend his 90th birthday with his whole family but wife Dorothy organised the whole surprise for him. THE first question Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs owner Jan Vydra was asked at the Casey Cardinia Business Awards winnerâ€™s lunch on Friday was â€œWhere is Basil?â€œ Memorably, Mr Vydra wore a jacket decorated with bright green basil leaves to the awards dinner in September. Mr Vydra confessed that his fiancee, Jill, was ill on the night of the awards and he had turned to one of his employees for sartorial advice. It goes without saying the employee had offered his enthusiastic support for the jacket. Mr Vydra said Jill, who accompanied him to the lunch, was determined that the basil jacket was left hanging in the cupboard from now on.

The judge took into account the manâ€™s lack of criminal history. He was fined $200, put on a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay back the store $240 for the booze.

ASKED what he does in his spare time, Mr Vydra confessed that he and Jill had recently bought 20 acres near Foster where they are starting a â€œlittle businessâ€? growing Christmas trees. â€œI find it hard to switch off and I donâ€™t like TV much,â€? he said. A PAIR of men poured scorn on liquor-licensing laws as they stole a slab of Jack Daniels cans and other drinks from a bottle shop, Dandenong Magistratesâ€™ Court heard. The men had arrived at the store about 8.55am and were told by the attendant that it was too early to sell them grog. One of the accused later told police theyâ€™d offered money for the alcohol or â€œotherwise weâ€™ll just take itâ€?.

IN A bizarre twist to a strange case, Cranbourne Secondary College has discovered the fate of their missing time capsule. The time capsule of buried on the school grounds in the early 1980s and was supposed to be dug up at the schoolâ€™s 40th anniversary on Saturday 19 November. However, assistant principal George Massouris discovered the time capsule had been stolen from the school in 1988 along with a tree that had been planted by then Prime Minister Bob Hawke. â€œThey ripped out a tree that Bob Hawke has planted and stole the time capsule,â€? Mr Massouris said. â€œIt was dug up not long after it was put in and it could have been a prank but we just donâ€™t know although it was reported to the police at the time.â€? The school is creating a new time capsule which will be buried early next year. Star News suggests the school includes a GPS tracker in the new time capsule in case any 2017 Year 12 students fell like repeating history.

Abort threat by partner By Cam Lucadou-Wells A MAN has been remanded in custody after allegedly threatening to kill his mid-pregnant partner and to give her a home abortion with a hook. The man, who was charged by Endeavour Hills police, has denied making the threats at the partner’s address in late August, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 15 November. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Tracey Arnold told the court that after several days of the pair arguing, the partner lay next to the accused in bed about 7am on 21 August and sought to talk about the state of their relationship. The man started verbally abusing her, and the partner declared she wanted to leave him. The man allegedly told the

woman she was not allowed to leave. He grabbed her by the hair and dragged her from the front door to the lounge room, Sen Const Arnold told the court. The 20-weeks pregnant woman was allegedly thrown on the couch. Her attacker then locked the front door and drew shut the blinds, the court heard. Until police arrived, the man made deadly threats, threw and damaged property and told her “I’ll hook you and give you a home abortion”, Sen Const Arnold said. Police found the woman screaming on the floor. She unlocked the front door and ran out to the lawn in “hysterics”, the court heard. The man was found by police on the house’s roof and was arrested.

He was also initially charged with possessing six unregistered snakes which were found in fish tanks at the home, including in the partner’s child’s bedroom. Defence barrister Huw Roberts argued that the snakes were owned by the man’s partner. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen advised police that it was best to withdraw the snake-possession charges, declaring them to be a “red herring” to the more serious allegations. Mr Vandersteen warned Mr Roberts not to call the accused’s family as witnesses in order to launch a “collateral attack” on the complainant. The case was adjourned for a contest hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 12 December.

Parcels stolen, van dumped A BERWICK delivery driver had his van hijacked in Dandenong. Police said a 43-year-old Berwick man was driving a white Australia Post van on Huckson Street about 8.40am on Friday 18 November. He tried to re-enter the vehicle after completing a delivery,

but a man grabbed him by the shoulder and pulled him backwards. The thief got into the vehicle and drove left towards Alex Scott Way, making off with about 150 parcels. He was described as Caucasian and aged between 20 and 30 years with a solid build and

short black hair. He was wearing a black Tshirt, pants and sunglasses. The van was found on Ascot Place in Keysborough a short time later, with boxes scattered around the abandoned vehicle. Police urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Hammer hit By Cam Lucadou-Wells AN 18-YEAR-OLD man's sentence has been deferred after pleading guilty to punching, strangling and hitting a school girl to the head with a hammer while she was trapped in his Hampton Park family's backyard shed. The man, who had spent most of the previous 49 days in adult custody, was freed on bail by Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 November - partly to treat his anger issues. The man had claimed he had blacked out through anger during the assault. One of the victim's dozen supporters directed retributive words to the man's family and friends who waited several minutes later before leaving the courtroom. The 17-year-old victim, who watched on from the gallery, called out during the deferral of sentence: "Because he's allowed to be angry." In a previous hearing, she'd stated the accused had taken everything from her; had made her feel worthless, unable to sleep and afraid to love again. The man had pleaded guilty to intentionally and recklessly causing injury as well as false imprisonment of the victim on 2 and 3 October.

During the incident, he struck her to the head three times with a hammer. He told her if she called police, he'll kill her or himself. Angered by a video found on the girl's phone, the man choked her twice until she was unconscious. He later told police that he had got so angry that he had blacked out himself. He had choked her to scare her and stop her yelling, he allegedly told police. As he held a sharp tool near her eye, he told her again that he would kill her. The ordeal ended when his mother rang the victim's family. The man's lawyer told the court that the accused's anger issues needed to be addressed. What was of most concern is there is no real indicator that drugs and alcohol are over-riding drivers of his behaviour. The court had been told in a previous hearing that the man was not violent with his relatives at home and had no criminal history. He had been recently sent away by his mother to a Brisbane relative and headspace mental health agency to solve his anger problems. His family were determined to ensure the man didn't recon-

cile with the victim, the lawyer said. A psychiatric report concluded there was no psychiatric illness but references to the man's immaturity, to the anger and the jealousy towards the complainant, the lawyer said. It suggested alcohol issues needed to be addressed but poly-substance abuse didn't seem to impact the man's behaviour. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the deferred sentence gave him the chance to see if the man could comply with bail and Youth Justice directions. He warned that an adult custodial sentence could be still on the cards. "The whole focus on this is for you to get treatment and that this doesn't happen again. "You have got to engage in your rehabilitation. These problems will only manifest and get worse if you don't," Mr Vandersteen said. The man was bailed on a night curfew and that he didn't take drugs or alcohol and complied with a Youth Justice program. He is also subject to a full and indefinite intervention order protecting the victim. He is set to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court for sentencing on 13 December.

RSPCA Victoria is encouraging people to adopt shelter animals by having their ‘Time to Go Home’ campaign and discounting adoption fees over this coming weekend. The RSPCA shelter in Pearcedale cares for over 2000 lost, runaway or abandoned animals each year with more than 1000 cats and more than 500 dogs last year alone. Adoption rates at the Pearcedale RSPCA centre are good, with last year seeing over 1800 animals find their forever-homes including 28 guinea pigs adopted, 135 rabbits and 9 horses, 580 dogs and 1260 cats. THE St Germain Demonstration Project, a large scale development in Clyde North, has been officially launched by City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz. With 300,000 residents and growing at a rate of 10,000 residents every year, Casey is already the largest city in Victoria by population. This underpins the need for residential development in the area and St Germain will deliver with a mix of residential areas providing more than 1200 new dwellings, including a resort community for over 55s with 250 villas. There are also plans for a medical facility and a retail centre, with land set aside for a major health facility further down the track. St Germain will ultimately create about 3600 employment opportunities, starting with the early construction of commercial and medical hubs. Selected by VPA as a demonstration project for its unique and early delivery of infrastructure, St Germain will provide a variety of facilities.

GIVING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY COMMUNITY groups and sporting clubs gratefully collected cheques worth tens of thousands of dollars at the Highgrove family day on Saturday 19 November, thanks to a unique three-way partnership. Hundreds of people flocked to the Clyde North community drawn by the brilliant sunshine, free food, kids activities and the chance to meet players from the Carlton Football Club. The family day also marked the opening of the Highgrove display village, which has 27 stunning homes by 12 of Melbourne’s best builders. On hand to present the cheques was Brown Property Group director and former Carlton player Fraser Brown. The donations were a result of a fundraising collaboration between Highgrove, Orbit Homes and the Carlton Football Club. The trio built and sold a house within the Highgrove community, with some of the proceeds of the sale going to some local community groups. Renee Purton from the Berwick Springs Junior Football Club welcomed the $1000 donation to her club. “Any donation we get to the club is wonderful. Brown Property Group have made a very generous donation. It’s going to help with new sports equipment and with our facilities. We are a non-

profit organisation so we do rely on the generosity of the community. This is just fantastic.” Cranbourne Information and Support Service CEO Leanne Petrides said the group's $10,000 donation would help get local children get ready for school. “The Information and Support Service will use the money for our education assistance program,” Ms Petrides said. “At this time of year we run a back to school support fund. It’s a hidden issue, but there are lots of families in our area who struggle with the costs of education. “This money will assist with items like uniforms, text books, fees even right down to basics like backpacks, lunchboxes, shoes and even undies if they’re needed.” Casey Cardinia Foundation executive officer Therese Howell was similarly grateful for her organisation’s $10,000 donation. “It’s a great initiative by Brown Property Group to be thinking philanthropically about the region and giving back into the region that they are gaining from,” she said. Those were the top tips for business success from the Casey Cardinia Business of the Year owner Jan Vydra at a special winner’s lunch on Friday 18 November. Mr Vydra, co-owner of Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs, was joined at D’Angelo Estate Vineyard by other category winners, sponsors and councillors from the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire. When asked for his top business tips, Mr Vydra didn’t hesitate in urging business owners to think big and appreciate their staff. He said his own staff of 85 had gained a fillip from the business being named the region’s best. “The award is not for me, but for the guys. It’s an acknowledgment that they work hard and are doing a good job,” he said. Mr Vydra said the positive, transparent culture at Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs had been vital to the firm’s success propelling output from 2000 bunches of herbs per week in the early days to 180,000 per week today. “We are all connected and care about the organisation. It’s a great place to work,” Mr Vydra said. His second tip was be bold. “I think if you are bold, think as far as you can. If you think small, you will always be small.” Mr Vydra said Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs, which is based at Devon Meadows and Clyde, was now looking for a third site to expand its production of herbs for the retail and hospitality markets. He was also exploring new ways to embrace the health benefits of fresh herbs. “I dream that one day we won’t put a pill in our mouth but a herb,” he said. New coach for Warriors By Russell Bennett ONE in, all in. The Pakenham Warriors are moving forward into a new era they hope will deliver some real success at the Big V level for their senior men’s, youth league men’s, and youth league women’s sides. And they’re all on the same page when it comes to their plan to get there. Being in one of the biggest growth corridors in Australia, and with some outstanding junior players, the Warriors have the potential to set themselves as a legitimate basketball powerhouse. But they won’t be taking shortcuts to get there - particularly at the expense of youth development. Brent Russell has taken the reigns of the Warriors’ senior men’s side - in Division 2. He’s still only 26 - younger than a number of the players he’ll be coaching - but he can’t wait for the challenge. With his playing days behind him, Russell is now forging ahead with his coaching career and his first with the Warriors’ men’s side promises to be incredibly exciting. Brad Bridgewater will be one of the team’s big-name drawcards next season. He’s played for many years at State

Championship level, and Bridgewater is also a graduate of LSU - the same US college that Shaquille O’Neal and Ben Simmons once called home. He’s also a former Harlem Globetrotter who acquired the nickname ‘Dunk Man’ for his ability to score above the rim. But the inclusions don’t stop there for the Warriors. Pakenham favourite James Topp has returned to the Warriors and will provide plenty of versatility on both ends of the floor, coupled with a real desire to develop the local area’s young talent. Nick Ross, Robin Maartens, and former Casey guard Brad Szalek are also on board, while the Warriors have retained the super-impressive Ben Gaze. Hayden Davey is the key omission from last year’s team. Russell knows he has big shoes to fill, stepping into the role vacated by Warriors' favourite son Jeff Reid at the end of last season. But he can’t wait for the challenge. “I had to pinch myself to start with but it was a good opportunity that I didn’t think I’d get at this stage, but it was something that I wanted to do,” he said.

“It just puts you out in the spotlight now and you can see how you really are as a coach. I’m excited - I can’t wait.” Russell raved about the versatility of the players at his disposal and said they’d be playing an up-tempo, entertaining style of play while also locking down defensively. It’s a style that all Warriors sides will hope to replicate next season. “I think we’ve selected a really good squad this year - they just want to be one family and give back to the club,” Russell said. “We are in it for the long-haul - the end goal is State Championship men. How we get there - that’s where we’ve sat down as a team already and discussed the steps we need to take. “Obviously it’s not going to happen all at once - we need to keep building. “We’ve set our overall target. Talking to the group, they all want to hang around for a good couple of years and set up a really good pathway for the juniors coming through. “We don’t want guys playing at a high level in juniors who then have nowhere to go. “We want to keep our kids at the club and create a better pathway.”

THE Pakenham Pumas are well-poised after the first nine rounds of the Baseball Victoria Division 3 men’s summer league, but there’s still so much more room for improvement. That’s the encouraging view from the club’s head coach - the popular, and super-experienced Wayne ‘Mouse’ Porter. The Pumas have gone through more than their fair share of adversity so far this season - particularly on the injury front - but they’ve uncovered some young players who could be real stars of the future and keep the club on the path to long-term, sustained success. In the Division 3 firsts standings, the Pumas were sitting on five wins and four losses after the first nine rounds - heading into their midweek clash with Footscray. The teams from Mulgrave (undefeated so far this campaign) and St Kilda are the benchmarks, but the Pumas aren’t far adrift. “It’s only the club’s second year in the summer (league), and numbers have gone up a little bit,” said Porter, who previously had long associations with Moorabbin and Berwick. “It’s not an eye-opener for me, but it’s a bit different to what I’ve been used to.” Porter raved about the Pumas’ import this season, Ben Miller. Seagulls stun Maroons By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 6 (Day 1) IN what has been an intensely fought out start to the Premier Division season, Saturday brought about some stunning results sure to raise some eyebrows. None more so than the capitulation of Upper Beaconsfield, who were rolled for a disappointing 62 in their clash against the league-leaders, Tooradin. The Maroons started poorly, losing their first five wickets for just 18 runs, and from there, they were never able to recover. Seagulls quick Cal O’Hare (4/23) was dynamic, taking the first three wickets of the innings, before capturing the skipper Bathiya Perera (12), ending a highly impressive performance. Aaron Avery (3/16) and Matt Welsh (2/18) were both strong contributors. In reply, the Seagulls are sitting on 4/130 off 44 overs, as skipper Tom Hussey (44) and Cal O’Hare (34) took charge. Outright is looking likely next week, as the Gulls look to advance their standings on the top of the ladder. Kooweerup has made a powerful statement, belting their way to 7/356 in their clash with Pakenham Upper/Toomuc at Pakenham Upper Reserve. Winning the toss and batting, the Demons started perfectly, with Chris O’Hara (83) and skipper Mark Cooper (25) combining for 46 for the first wicket.
