RESIDENTS of Cranbourne East received a community infrastructure boost with the announcement of $2.38 million to upgrade the Hunt Club housing estate sports grounds. This funding from the State Government together with $2 million contribution from the developer and $50,000 from the City of Casey will help fund the $4.4 million complex. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera made the announcement on Monday 21 No-
vember along with Casey city councillors Amanda Stapledon and Steve Beardon. The funding comes as part of the State Government’s growing suburbs fund, formerly interface funding, that provides growing suburbs with means to create and maintain community infrastructure. Roads to ruin: residents By Cam Lucadou-Wells CASEY Mayor Sam Aziz has said it is time for the State Government to take heed of a looming “catastrophe” after residents nominated traffic and public transport inertia as their pet hate in Casey council’s latest survey. In the November Casey NEXT report, 32 per cent of surveyed residents nominated the issue as their top area for improvement. Community safety was the second most popular concern at 15 per cent. Cr Aziz said the result was unsurprising given the sluggish travel times for people going to work, dropping off kids and even doing their Saturday shopping. The State Government recently allocated a “completely disproportionate” $1.8 billion for arterial roads - all in Melbourne’s western suburbs, despite the south-east’s infrastructure
gap, he said. “We are growing faster than the west. Looking at that alone, we should be getting 1.5 times the funds. “The Government take for granted that they hold three seats in the southeast and those seats haven’t changed in recent elections. “It’s a shame the confidence of the voters hasn’t been looked after with this particular funding.” The situation was headed for a “catastrophe” which would be made worse by rate-capping, Cr Aziz said. Cr Aziz said a new round of advocacy early in 2017 would make it “imperative for Casey and Cardinia to be looked after”. “People need to start paying attention so that the government receives the message loud and clear and won’t tolerate being neglected.” The council’s long wish-list in-
cludes an extension of Cranbourne railway line, upgrading Narre Warren railway station, extending O’Shea Road to the Beaconsfield interchange and duplicating Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road from Thompsons Road to South Gippsland Highway. It is also lobbying for an extension of Thompsons Road into a Casey-Cardinia employment hub - which would ease the congestion of city-bound workers on the Monash Freeway. Readers told Star News of traffic jams at Thompsons Road-Western Port Highway roundabout, Clyde RoadGreaves Road intersection and Soldiers Road. Clyde Road and the Monash Freeway were popular frustrations. Public Transport Users Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said poor bus links with infrequent services, and congested rail lines were bug-bears. “While it’s good that Casey has rail
access, there are big gaps between the train lines which, at the moment, are only covered by inadequate bus services. “Duplication of the Cranbourne line will still be needed (to increase train services), as will better bus services to help people get to stations.” Recently, the State Government began work on widening the Monash Freeway between Clyde Road and EastLink and announced an upgrade of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and a fully funded duplication of Thompsons Road and the removal of Merinda Park level crossing. The skyrail and Metro Rail Tunnel projects are said to create capacity for more frequent rail services on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. Roads Minister and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said further road upgrades in the south-east were being considered.
“Since coming to government, we haven’t wasted a minute in delivering projects the south-east desperately needs to cut travel times, reduce traffic and improve safety for local residents. “Ryan Smith and his previous Liberal Government colleagues sat on their hands for four years as our roads grew busier and more congested,” he said. Opposition roads spokesman Ryan Smith had criticised Mr Donnellan over the western suburbs roads announcement. “Commuters in the south-east have a daily battle on the Monash Freeway as growth continues to soar in Casey and Cardinia. “If Luke Donnellan lived in his electorate he might understand the congestion his constituents face, but Narre Warren is a world away from his inner city home in Fitzroy.”

The burglary occurred over the weekend of Friday 28 September and Monday 31 September. The thieves broke into the school grounds over the weekend through the fence the school shares with J & P Cam Reserve. They then broke open the shipping container where the bikes were stored and made off with 14 bikes of varying sizes and colours.

Member of Holt Anthony Byrne said the roads package announced by the Prime Minister showed the government was not in tune with localised roads issues. “The upgrade to Thompsons Road is a key priority,’’ Mr Byrne said. “It is clear that the Coalition is not committed to easing congestion for people living in Cranbourne who use Thompsons Road each day.’’ However, Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said federal funding of the Thompsons Road upgrade had not been ruled out. “My colleague, La Trobe MP Jason Wood,
and I are keen to make further investments in infrastructure in Victoria and we’re committed to working with the State Government on future projects,” he said. “I expect the Thompsons Road upgrade will be one of the projects discussed.” The funding announced on Tuesday also includes a $1 billion funding boost to the Monash Freeway upgrade that is shared equally between the federal and state governments. Mr Chester said the money for the Monash would be used to best reduce congestion on the freeway. “The Australian and Victorian governments have also agreed to develop a comprehensive business case for the Monash Freeway upgrade to investigate and consider options to reduce congestion,” Mr Chester said. “This will be oversighted by a joint Australian and Victorian government steering committee.”

FEDERAL Member for Holt Anthony Byrne along and Shadow Transport Minister Anthony Albanese have hit back at the Prime Minister’s Victorian Roads Package, claiming it ignores the Cranbourne growth area. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced on Tuesday 15 November a $3 billion agreement with the Victorian State Government to help fund 40 road and rail projects. A STOLEN car was been located on fire in Devon Meadows on Wednesday 16 November after it was stolen from Langwarrin the same day. Police and CFA were called to the scene of the burning car on the side of Craig Road in Devon Meadows about 11.40pm. The 2006 model Holden Commodore ute was found well alight and destroyed by the fire. A YOUNG woman has been saved from a terrifying incident in Cranbourne East when the family pet scared away a couple of would-be home intruders. The 15-year-old girl was home alone on Tuesday 15 November when she heard loud noises coming from the front of the house about 2.30pm. The family dog also heard the noises and when the large bull mastiff cross went to investigate the noise and let off a bark, the would-be crooks fled in a hurry. The young girl saw them leave in an orange coloured sedan and police are asking anyone who may have seen the vehicle to come forward.

CRANBOURNE Secondary College celebrated its 40th anniversary on Saturday 19 November with 390 people signing the guest book. Current assistant principal George Massouris was the main organiser of the event and he said he was very pleased with how it played out. “It went really well and was very well received,” he said. “We bought back three past principals and had them in the same room.
“We were able to get past assistant principals as well, many students attended going back to ’76 from the very beginning of the school.” The event has past and present students giving speeches and presenting displays of the school’s history. “We had the class captain of ’76 talk to the crowd and give an amazing speech,” Mr Massouris said. “He lived across the road when the school first started and could hear his dog barking from
his classroom which was a great story to hear.” Past and present students performed a concert and gave gifts to past principals for their work in creating a rich school history. “It was a really great event and so many people came together to see old phots and video presentations,” Mr Massouris said. “I think most people walked away thinking it was really worthwhile.”

Daylight robberies CASEY Crime Investigation Unit is on the lookout for a group of young men who are committing daylight burglaries in the South East suburbs. The group have burgled properties on Arena Parade in Officer, San Fratello Street in Clyde North, Rosebank Drive in Cranbourne North, Crestway Drive in Cranbourne North, and Sussex Avenue in Cranbourne North. It is believed the five young men have been travelling around the Cranbourne, Clyde and Officer areas in a stolen 2005 model silver Holden Commodore. The car was reported as stolen from the Officer area on Thursday
17 November and involved in a petrol drive-off in Narre Warren at about 3pm that day. It is believed four young men of African appearance and one of Maori or Islander appearance have committed four burglaries in the South East between Thursday 17 November and Sunday 20 November. The group has been seen casing people’s properties and waiting for the households to be empty, usually between the hours of noon and 4pm, kicking in the front door and ransacking the houses. The young men have been targeting items such as car keys, jewellery and any other valuables in plain view around the house. Casey CIU Detective Acting Se-
nior Sergeant Michelle Chiang said police urge everyone to have a security door installed at their houses. “We would love for everyone to get a security door and need to hide valuables when they aren’t home," she said. “In these new housing estates, people don’t tend to have them because they have very nice looking new front doors they want out in the open." Det Act Sen Sgt Chiang also said people should be wary of suspicious behavior in their neighbourhoods. “People also need to be vigilant of youths hanging around their streets," she said. “Victims of these burglaries have
noticed groups of youths watching their houses and we believe they are casing them for when the victims leave.“ Police have confirmed these crimes appear of an opportunistic nature and although the young men are operating in a group, there doesn’t seem to be any connection to known criminal gangs. “These crimes are definitely opportunistic,“ Det Act Sen Sgt Chiang said. “They are sitting, watching and picking soft targets where the security is not at it’s best and looking for vulnerable points of entry. “They are not necessarily organised."

The Cranbourne Garden Club hosted the Blooming Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Cranbourne Public Hall on Thursday 10 November. CASEY residents should be concerned about the reappointment of councillor Sam Aziz for two key reasons. The mayor has shown that he prefers a leadership model that is management centred and not driven by what the residents of Casey want. Despite the results from focus groups and “consultations� with ratepayers last year, indicating that ratepayers preferred the council to work within the minister’s 2.5 per cent rate cap, the mayor and Casey council still applied to the Essential Services Commission for a significant rate variation to fund non-urgent projects. This was subsequently rejected by the commission which stated that Casey had a very healthy budget surplus. Secondly, the reappointment of Cr Aziz as mayor has happened without any formal debate and discussion on council, with one councillor saying he felt he had to agree because “I believed Sam Aziz had the numbers� and that any dissent was pointless. This seems to me to be an unhealthy decision-making process. In future, Casey’s management will only need to say that Casey needs higher rates for projects and none of our fearless councillors will have the initiative to explore alternative ideas or stand up to the conventional wisdom. A 90-YEAR-OLD man from Cranbourne had a lovely treat on his milestone birthday when his family paid him a surprise visit from his homeland of Holland. John Van De Beek wasn’t expecting to spend his 90th birthday with his whole family but wife Dorothy organised the whole surprise for him. Mr Vydra confessed that his fiancee, Jill, was ill on the night of the awards and he had turned to one of his employees for sartorial advice. It goes without saying the employee had offered his enthusiastic support for the jacket. Mr Vydra said Jill, who accompanied him to the lunch, was determined that the basil jacket was left hanging in the cupboard from now on.
The judge took into account the man’s lack of criminal history. He was fined $200, put on a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay back the store $240 for the booze.
ASKED what he does in his spare time, Mr Vydra confessed that he and Jill had recently bought 20 acres near Foster where they are starting a “little business� growing Christmas trees. “I find it hard to switch off and I don’t like TV much,� he said. A PAIR of men poured scorn on liquor-licensing laws as they stole a slab of Jack Daniels cans and other drinks from a bottle shop, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. The men had arrived at the store about 8.55am and were told by the attendant that it was too early to sell them grog. One of the accused later told police they’d offered money for the alcohol or “otherwise we’ll just take it�.
IN A bizarre twist to a strange case, Cranbourne Secondary College has discovered the fate of their missing time capsule. The time capsule of buried on the school grounds in the early 1980s and was supposed to be dug up at the school’s 40th anniversary on Saturday 19 November. However, assistant principal George Massouris discovered the time capsule had been stolen from the school in 1988 along with a tree that had been planted by then Prime Minister Bob Hawke. “They ripped out a tree that Bob Hawke has planted and stole the time capsule,� Mr Massouris said. “It was dug up not long after it was put in and it could have been a prank but we just don’t know although it was reported to the police at the time.� The school is creating a new time capsule which will be buried early next year. Star News suggests the school includes a GPS tracker in the new time capsule in case any 2017 Year 12 students fell like repeating history.

Bike accident claims a life

By Victoria Stone-Meadows A HAMPTON Park man has died in a tragic motorbike accident on the evening of 18 November at River Gum Creek Reserve. The 52-year-old man was riding a trailbike in the reserve off Coral Drive when one of his bike’s wheels became tangled in discarded wire. The man was thrown from the bike and the bike landed on top of him just before 8pm. He was able to dial triple-zero before losing consciousness while speaking to the phone operator. Police, SES and Ambulance rushed to the scene and attempted to resuscitate him but he was unable to be revived and tragically lost his life.

The survey also factored-in a range of socio-demographic data to enable a comprehensive health equity analysis. The data from the 2015 VicHealth survey shows that Casey meets the average health and wellbeing score of 77.3. However, there were some notable findings from the survey that showed Casey has areas for improvement when it comes to resident’s trust, safety and alcohol use. Some of these were: - 48.1 per cent of Casey residents said they felt safe walking alone in their local area after dark, which is less than the Victorian estimate of 55.1 per cent; - 64.8 per cent of Casey resi-
dents said that people in their neighbourhood can be trusted, the average across the state is 71.9 per cent; - 21.3 per cent of Casey residents were found to be at risk of short-term harm from alcohol abuse in any given month. Victorian Minister for Health, Jill Hennessy, said the data from the survey will allow governments at all levels to provide targeted and localised health services. “This information will give us, and local councils, the information we need to see where things are improving, and where we need to work harder,” she said.

THE latest results from the VicHealth Indicators Survey show that the City of Casey has a health and wellbeing score of 77.1 out of a possible 100. The survey takes into consideration a number of health and wellbeing indicators and is conducted every four years to provide a snapshot of a population’s health. The survey looked at factors that impact an individual’s health and wellbeing such as overall life satisfaction, perceptions of safety and neighbourhood connectedness, physical activity levels, consumption of fruit, vegetables, water and alcohol, and so on.

Cycle of life CRANBOURNE teens rode away from a Geelong event with new confidence, new skills and new bikes. The Cranbourne Secondary College students were among more than 800 aged 13 to 17 years from across Victoria to attend a Happiness Cycle event on Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 November. They spent the day building confidence, independence and risk analysis skills by learning bike mechanics and maintenance, road safety awareness and endurance. Every student attending the event received a new bicycle plus a helmet, bike lock and set of lights.
The Happiness Cycle is now in its third year and motivates teens to get more involved in their community through bike riding. Coca-Cola South Pacific created the program with notfor-profit organisation Bicycle Network. Bicycle Network CEO Craig Richards said bike riding was a huge part of growing up. “It gives young people independence and develops the ability to recognise risk and understand the consequences,” he said. “This program encourages teens to interact with their peers through bike riding while learning life-changing skills.
“It is fantastic to know that so far we have assisted 10,000 Aussie teens in disadvantaged communities transition from teen to young adult. “It’s an exciting moment when we hand out the bikes. “In the days of iPhones and computer games, a bike is still a coveted item for teens and unfortunately they are not in easy reach for some of these young people. “We are giving kids access to something they otherwise wouldn’t have had, and there’s no greater joy than that.” The Happiness Cycle works with program partner Beacon Foundation to connect with the teens through their schools and community groups.

THE St Germain Demonstration Project, a large scale development in Clyde North, has been officially launched by City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz. Can the human race keep up? By Alana Mitchelson FUTURIST Chris Riddell believes the greatest restriction is no longer technology, but the ability for human beings to embrace change rather than trying to stop progress. Riddell, who recently spoke at the Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast, keeps across the latest trends in technology around the world that he believes will shape the future. He stressed the importance of forward-thinking and embracing technology when it comes to business strategies, as well as the way people approach their personal lives. “Today technology is challenging industries to adapt to big changes, sometimes in a timeframe of less than a year,” he said. “This is a new normal. “Your business’s ability to adapt to change in this revolution of experience will define and shape the next 100 years.” Riddell asked the audience to think back to the release of the first computer game, Pong, which involved a dot bouncing back and forth across the screen. He said this simple game showed people where the world was going.

All people need to do is spit in a test tube. “If you have a partner, they can also obtain their DNA profile and tell you what kind of children you will have.” Riddell described the current era as the revolution of experience.
Rather than buying CDs for example, people are opting to subscribe to an experience on platforms such as Spotify. Customers are demanding incredible experiences and data is increasingly becoming an insightful tool to create personalised experiences by tailoring products and services to meet customers’ needs. Riddell predicts that virtual reality is going to be big within the next two years.
“In the workplace, the idea of having a screen on the desk will disappear,” he said. “You will be able to wear a piece of equipment over your eyes that projects everything in front of you that only you will be able to see." Riddell highlighted how advertising and marketing campaigns had changed over the years. In the 1960s BMW would sell their cars by promoting their new features such as a triple hemispheric swirl action combustion chamber. He said there was no way that approach would sell a car today
The product is now being sold in the background, with a focus instead on the customer experience that surrounds it. Riddell suggested that one of the ways larger corporations can stay relevant was to “think and behave like entrepreneurs or start-ups”. He used an unusual analogy, comparing a banana plantation to a rainforest. “Ordinarily a banana plantation business will spend their entire lives thinking about bananas and nothing but bananas,” Riddell said. “Whereas a rainforest, unlike a plantation, is an incredibly dangerous space. You could get bitten by a snake and die instantly, but you could also find a spider that can cure cancer. “Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity might give you that opportunity to change the world. “Many people fear technology. Technology isn’t going to replace us. Those were the top tips for business success from the Casey Cardinia Business of the Year owner Jan Vydra at a special winner’s lunch on Friday 18 November. Mr Vydra, co-owner of Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs, was joined at D’Angelo Estate Vineyard by other category winners, sponsors and councillors from the City of Casey and Cardinia shire. When asked for his top business tips, Mr Vydra didn’t hesitate in urging business owners to think big and appreciate their staff. He said his own staff of 85 had gained a fillip from the business being named the region’s best. “The award is not for me, but for the guys. It’s an acknowledgment that they work hard and are doing a good job,” he said. Mr Vydra said the positive, transparent culture at Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs had been vital to the firm’s success propelling output from 2000 bunches of herbs per week in the early days to 180,000 per week today. “We are all connected and care about the organisation. It’s a great place to work,” Mr Vydra said. His second tip was be bold. “I think if you are bold, think as far as you can. If you think small, you will always be small.” Mr Vydra said Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs, which is based at Devon Meadows and Clyde, was now looking for a third site to expand its production of herbs for the retail and hospitality markets. EVERY drop of drinking, rain and storm water counts at a cutting-edge housing estate in Lyndhurst. The Aquarevo estate, which was jointly developed by South East Water and Villawood Properties, will boast technology such as an on-site wastewater recycling plant and rainwater tanks that use data from the Bureau of Meteorology. According to the developers, each household on the 460-lot estate on Boland Drive is expected to slash their use of drinking water by 70 per cent and reduce stormwater run-off by 25 per cent. For South East Water, it was a chance to showcase leading home water sustainability technology on a former water purification plant site. It shows there’s a “better way” to use water without sacrificing health and liveability, SEW managing director Kevin Hutchings said. Other saving features are
a rain-to-hot water collection system - in which rainwater is stored, screened, filtered, and UV and heat treated before supplying hot water taps for showers, baths and laundries. If the rainwater tank runs dry, drinking water is automatically supplied to the hot water system. The fully-enclosed water recycling plant will treat all wastewater from the estate to produce the highest grade recycled water. The Class A recycled water will be used in toilets, gardens and, as an option, washing machines. South East Water technology called OneBox will be installed on the walls of each home, allowing householders to monitor all energy and water use on an app. It will use Bureau of Meteorology data to decide if rainwater should be released from the tank before forecasted rains. This helps reduce stormwater flooding and keeps the tank water fresh, according to South
East Water. The technology also controls the temperature of hot water and allows South East Water to regulate flows in the estate’s pressure sewer network. Each home will be fitted with solar panels and will be set among copious wetlands and open space. Ms Neville and Cranbourne MP Jude Perera opened the estate’s Aquarevo Discovery Centre, with the help of Lyndhurst Primary School students giving a rendition of Singin’ in the Rain, on 16 November. “We all need to reduce our reliance on drinking water as we deal with the challenges of population growth and climate change,” Ms Neville said. Villawood Properties director Rory Costello said it was a “standout example” of collaboration between the government and private sectors. “This will be a high quality residential community where families can positively impact the environment just by moving in.”

Ash is off to Open By David Nagel THE career of former Berwick Montuna member Ashley Hall has received -quite literally - a major boost, with the 33-year-old qualifying for next year’s British Open at Royal Birkdale. Hall, who first played in the Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes in 2012, qualified for next year’s event after making a three-man play-off at the Australian Open at Royal Sydney on Sunday. Hall and fellow Australian, Cameron Smith, would eventually
lose the play-off to world numberfive Jordan Spieth, but final rounds of six-under par 66 proved good enough to finish top-three and qualify for the Open. The father-of-two from Cranbourne started Sunday’s round at long odds, with corporate bookmakers offering up to $401 about his chances. Hall drained a pressure 20-foot putt on the last hole to qualify for the play-off. He has had a mixed bag of success in 2016, winning his second Victorian PGA at Huntingdale in
February, but has been inconsistent since then. His lack of success might see him on the hunt for a new job in 2017 to merge in with his golf career. “Everything is in golf,” Hall said after falling short in the play-off. “I’ve got a couple of young kids and my wife isn’t back to work. I need to provide for them and that’s just the way it is. I might mix golf with a job next year. I needed to do well - it was pretty much crossroads type of stuff for me.” Hall was a club champion at Berwick Montuna at the age of 16 and
won his first four-round event at the 2007 Victorian PGA Championship. He also won the 2009 Victorian Open. Hall’s first experience at Royal Birkdale lived up to his expectations. “It was everything I thought it would be,” Hall told the News upon his return. “It was at least 10 times bigger than anything we have back home. There are 20,000 seats in the grandstand alone. I will do anything it takes to play in more of these events.”
Push is on for A-League side By Nick Creely WITH so much talk and speculation surrounding a third Victorian based A-League side, the CaseyDandenong region is set to push for a licence to compete in the biggest soccer tournament in Australia. Both the Casey and Greater Dandenong regions could endorse a south-east bid, with Casey Fields and the Dandenong Showgrounds seen as appropriate venues. The south-east is one of the booming areas in the state and could accommodate a national football club if the push was successful. With teams such as Springvale White Eagles, Dandenong Thunder, Dandenong City, Berwick City and Casey Comets all semi-professional clubs in the region, it seems that an A-League team is not out of the question. All these teams are behind the idea and would like to see it go
ahead, viewing it as the perfect pathway for talented juniors that come through their respective clubs. The expansion of the A-League is one of the hottest topics of discussion in sporting circles. The A-League currently has 10 teams, five based in New South Wales, one is South Australia, one in Queensland, two in Victoria and one in New Zealand. There is speculation that the Gold Coast franchise may be reunited, but there is talk of a Northern Queensland side, another side based in Sydney and a secondary Adelaide side. But the south-east region at this stage is AFL free, paving the way for a legitimate bid at one of the two spots set to be filled by the ALeague in the next few years. Geelong is also mooted as another possible destination and could appeal due to its commercial success in the AFL, but it seems likelier
that the south-east would be better placed and attract more support. The cities of Dandenong and Casey are one of the most multi-cultural in the country, and the interest for soccer is high. There is a vast network of talented young footballers in the region and the placement of a side will do wonders in the continuing development of the game in Victoria. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz is behind the idea, and will work closely with the Greater Dandenong council to achieve the licence. “We’re currently in the preliminary phase of discussion at the moment,” he revealed. “We are looking at a number of facilities, and we believe we firmly have the infrastructure and we would welcome it. “Casey is one of Victoria’s largest and growing cities, and I think the demand for soccer has been increasing certainly over the last five
years, and this is why the council is building soccer fields, and I believe the community would certainly welcome an A-League club. “It would be a fantastic addition to the region - we’re going to keep negotiating, like we did for other elite clubs like the Melbourne Football Club at Casey Fields, and we will keep going until we get the right outcome for our community. “This is a regional matter, so we are working very closely with our colleagues from Greater Dandenong. “I’m sure there will be plenty more discussion still to come.”
NEW South Wales-trained greyhound Ando’s Mac caused a major upset by claiming the $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park on Friday night. And the win left trainer Jason Mackay almost speechless. “Just to make this final is something else,” said Mackay following the cup triumph. “Look at the crowd, the atmosphere is just sensational. I keep pinching myself - I know it happened - but did it really happen? I still can’t believe it.” Ando’s Mac ($12.90) began fairly but was afforded early room which allowed him to accelerate quickly and lead through the first turn. He opened a two length margin over Barton Bale down the back straight before withstanding a late charge by the well supported Jesaulenko ($5.10) to claim the cup in 29.48. Despite drawing box five, Mackay was quietly confident his first TAB Melbourne Cup finalist was a winning chance in the sport’s showcase event. “I had a real gut feeling with this dog,” he said. “He was so terrible out of the boxes on prelude night and came out second last in the heats. But I just had an inkling that if he got the start right like he has done back home, then he can run some serious first sections and he showed that tonight.” Mackay is no stranger to Group 1 success, having trained several winners at the highest level of the sport. However, to win a TAB Melbourne Cup was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. “All trainers aspire to win this race, it’s the greatest race on the calendar,” he explained. “I don’t think deep down that you ever think you can do it. I’ve had some really good dogs over the years - greyhounds of the year and track record holders - and they’ve not stacked up because the competition is way superior here than to anywhere else. “But Ando’s Mac is a wonderful dog. He doesn’t give 80 or 90 per cent, he’ll bust 100 per cent every time. He’s not the fastest dog around but you wouldn’t swap him for anything, he’s full of heart.” The win was Ando Mac’s 16th from 29 starts - and his second at Group 1 level - with the $420,000 first prize elevating his career prize money beyond $555,000. During his entertaining acceptance speech, Mackay was full of praise for fellow trainer Anthony Azzopardi (trainer of the beaten favourite Zambora Brockie) for looking after Ando’s Mac during his Victorian campaign. Eagles’ stars hold clinic By Nick Creely DDCA REVIEW - ROUND 4 (DAY 2) “THEY just make batting look so easy.” “Give them a baggy green.” “They are the greatest duo in club cricket history.” These are just some of the remarks bandied around the traps of Casey Fields on Saturday, as Steven Spoljaric and Matthew Chasemore put on a batting clinic. The Eagles champions, who both have distinguished Premier Cricket resumes, came in at a shaky 4/28, before plundering a mind-blowing 308-run partnership, giving the Eagles a colossal six-wicket victory against North Dandenong. Spoljaric (158no), the three-time Alan Wookey medalist, is now averaging 311 in Turf 1 this season, and has now scored two consecutive centuries. Spoljaric was utterly devastating, with his cover-driving in full force, as he toyed with an opposition that could only do so much. He particularly enjoyed the off-spinner Michael De Kauwe (0/81 off 11 overs), who seemed to overpitch to him regularly, resulting in some spectacular and expansive long-hitting. Last year’s Wookey winner, Chasemore (148no), was simply majestical with his forceful square of the wicket shots. Despite having a slightly unconventional style of batting, ‘Cheeks’ just keeps churning out big scores. Only last Wednesday, Chasemore played a brutal knock of 87 in their Twenty20 clash against Narre Warren. The left and right hand combination seemed to unsettle a stunned North bowling unit, and eventually the game was called off with 24 overs still left to play. They must now surely be keeping their phones close to them, because a call from Australian

In other Turf 1 results, Berwick’s Jarrod Armitage has struck his second consecutive century, guiding the Bears to a convincing win over Parkfield. Armitage (108no), who turned 25 on Saturday, struck 16 fours and one six, in another stunning performance. After the Parkers made 191 last week, it was always going to be a tricky chase with the Bears resuming at 2/47. But skipper Jarrod Goodes and Armitage stuck together despite some early wickets, putting on a splendid 118-run partnership, surpassing the Parkers. Goodes (54) played a brilliant counter-attacking innings, hitting his runs at a run-a-ball, as the Parkers pondered what could have been. Mordialloc has comfortably defeated Dandenong West, but failed to obtain double-points at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. Resuming at 5/148, the Bloodhounds didn’t bat that long, declaring on 9/220, and 140 runs clear, with 63 overs left in the day’s play. But the Bulls showed grit with the bat, managing to bat out the day, despite the Bloodhounds continual pressure with the ball. Springvale South has held off a fast-finishing Dingley, as the Dingoes continue to emerge in Turf 1 this season. After the Bloods posted a tricky 7/264 last week, off the back of a sparkling century by Nathan King, the Dingoes resumed the day’s play at 1/8. After the loss of a few early wickets, the Dingoes fought hard, as Calvin Barlow (57) threatened to take the game away from the Bloods. But Jarryd Straker (5/58) took the last four wickets to end the Dingoes’ resistance on 194. Hallam-Kalora Park is building into a force to be reckoned with, edging out a highly-fancied Buckley Ridges in their clash at Park Oval.

Cats too good for Swans By Nick Creely PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 7 (DAY 2) IT was truly a tough day at the office for Casey-South Melbourne, going down to a ruthless Geelong side in day two of their clash at Geelong Cricket Ground. After the Swans posted 244 last week, the Cats were irresistible with the blade, amassing a whopping 5/397 as they climbed themselves off the bottom of the Premier ladder. After the Cats resumed play at 0/85, with Aaron Finch missing due to Victorian duties, they continued their domination, with skipper Eamon Vines (73) and Tyler Larkin putting the Swans to the sword. Larkin, who has only played Premier Cricket for two seasons, was out for the dreaded 99, and played with such fluency to suggest he has a strong future in the game. Leg-spinner Cameron Dinger (3/86) was a rare bright spot in a tough match from the improved Swans outfit, while Dylan Hadfield (1/43) and Nathan Lambden (1/69) tried hard despite the lack of wickets. Exciting all-rounder Dylan Hadfield said despite the result, there were plenty of areas they can look at positively. ”It was a pretty tough weekend, but I think we learnt we need to be far more consistent with our bowling,” he said. “We bowled well in patches and then poorly in patches, and we just needed to make the most of our opportunities to be honest. “We need to ensure we are always on and performing consistently for 96 overs of cricket - and we need to make sure we are always focused on the task at hand. “However, it was nice to give some guys an opportunity to bowl at this level - I thought Cam Dinger was just fantastic, he bowled well all day for 26 overs and showed he can do it at this level.” An area of concern for the Swans this season has been their inability to convert starts with the bat, something Hadfield is fully aware of.

process inflicted further pain on Prahran in day two of their clash at Shepley Oval. The Panthers continued on from their dominating display last week, piling on 130 quick runs, before declaring 150 runs in front and 49 overs left to play in the game. James Nanopoulos (83) continued his fine start to the season for the Panthers with both bat and ball, while Cameron Forsyth (61) combined brilliantly with Nanopoulos for a 107-run partnership that steered them to the commanding lead. But the Blues dug deep in the second innings, and despite constant pressure and plenty of chatter in the field, salvaged something from the wreckage. They ended the day on 4/170, with Pattinson (1/10), Justin Butterfield (1/42), James Nanopoulos (1/36) and Peter Cassidy (1/17) taking the wickets.

Seagulls stun Maroons By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 6 (Day 1) IN what has been an intensely fought out start to the Premier Division season, Saturday brought about some stunning results sure to raise some eyebrows. None more so than the capitulation of Upper Beaconsfield, who were rolled for a disappointing 62 in their clash against the league-leaders, Tooradin. The Maroons started poorly, losing their first five wickets for just 18 runs, and from there, they were never able to recover. Seagulls quick Cal O’Hare (4/23) was dynamic, taking the first three wickets of the innings, before capturing the skipper Bathiya Perera (12), ending a highly impressive performance. Aaron Avery (3/16) and Matt Welsh (2/18) were both strong contributors. In reply, the Seagulls are sitting on 4/130 off 44 overs, as skipper Tom Hussey (44) and Cal O’Hare (34) took charge. Outright is looking likely next week, as the Gulls look to advance their standings on the top of the ladder. Kooweerup has made a powerful statement, belting their way to 7/356 in their clash with Pakenham Upper/Toomuc at Pakenham Upper Reserve. Winning the toss and batting, the Demons started perfectly, with Chris O’Hara (83) and skipper Mark Cooper (25) combining for 46 for the first wicket. But then Ben Spicer (70) got in on the act, putting on 136-runs with O’Hara before a couple of wickets gave the Yabbies some hope. But the Demons powerful batting unit continues to deliver and Mitchell Davey (66no) and Jess Mathers (70) ensured they would reach a total that will virtually be unbeatable. Nick Kyval (2/69) and Ben McLeod (2/90) were the only Yabbies to take multiple wickets. Daniel McCalman’s composed century for Merinda Park in their clash against Cardinia has potentially resurrected a fledging season for the Cobras. The opening bat crafted his way to an excellent 101, as the Cobras worked their way to 9/266 against a gun Bulls bowling attack. Daniel Diwell (53) was valuable support, putting on 80 runs with McCalman. Bulls star Dwayne Doig (5/97) once again took plenty of wickets, but collectively they struggled to get going as a bowling unit. And Emerald is a sneaky chance of upsetting Pakenham in their clash at Toomuc Reserve. After the Bombers elected to bat, they started poorly, losing their first two wickets quite quickly, but managed to limp their way to 148, courtesy of skipper Andrew Walker (31), Clinton Marsh (28) and Ian Litterbach (29). Lions bowlers Chris Savage (3/24) and Tom Tyrrell (4/31) were in fine touch with the ball once again. The Lions then had 21 overs to bat out, and lost some early wickets, finishing the day on 3/71, still a nervous 78 runs short of victory. pushed hard in the last hour. Chris Savage (7) and skipper Dom Paynter (21) are the not-out batsmen. Meanwhile, in the District Division, Kalgidhar has amassed a whopping 6/349 in their clash with struggling Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll at Lakeside Oval. Kalgidhar were simply brutal, as opening batsman Sunny Paul (106) smashed a century, while fellow top-order counterpart Vishalbir Thind (92) narrowly missed out on the triple figures. Despite the carnage, Dean Henwood (3/71) still caused some issues, and took an early wicket. In reply, the Marygoons are 0/15. An unbeaten half-century to Tooradin all-rounder Tim Lenders (52) has lifted the Seagulls to a competitive 187 in their clash with Cranbourne Meadows at Tooradin Reserve. After a horror start, in which the Seagulls were languishing at 6/55, Lenders got together with tailenders Tom Bethune (16) and Matthew Finch (30) to rescue the side from embarrassment. With 19 overs to go in the day’s play, the Rebels were nervous with the bat, as the Seagulls breathed fire with the ball. Two late wickets left the Rebels reeling at 2/33, as Matthew Finch, Bailey Lownds, Tom Bethune and Tim Lenders had the opposition clueless. Devon Meadows have posted a strong total of 247, in an intriguing clash with Clyde at Lineham Oval. Kyle Salerno (93) found some vintage touch, playing a splendid knock for the Panthers, while keeper Darren O’Brien (41) was amongst the runs. Cougars openers Patrick Lawson (4/72) and Nick Sadler (3/21) were excellent all day, while Damasara Menuwara (3/61) was crucial in the middle overs. The Vikings then continued their momentum with the bat, chasing down the total and then some by the end of the day’s play. In the Sub-District division, Lang Lang have put together an ominous total of 325 against Aura Vale, as they look to work their way into the top four. Apart from opening batsman William Wykes (0) who fell early in the piece, the Swamp Tigers were in full control, as skipper Clint Fulton (58), Ron Bright Jr (66) and Sam Cole (50) feasted on a lacklustre Lakers bowling unit. Lakers skipper Christian Webb was in fine touch with the ball, capturing four wickets, while Grant Walker and Kevin McDonald both took two wickets apiece. An unbeaten century to Clyde batsman Joel Avard (107) has propelled the Cougars to 4/260 in their clash with Nyora at Nyora Reserve. Hampton Park mix it HAMPTON PARK BOWLS HAMPTON Park midweek bowlers had a mixed day on Tuesday. Division 1 had another win to get themselves off the bottom of the ladder. At home against Dandenong Club, Val Moore, Christine Hendrie, Helen Lambert and Shane Collins led the way with a 28-14 win, and Marion Battaglia, Denise Eastick, Ellen Smith and Andrew Brandolin (17-15) and Janice Collins, Toni Sutton, Geoff Ladner and Neville Hendrie (19-15) also contributed. Hampton Park (1) 16-64 defeated Dandenong Club (1) 0-44. Playing at Oakleigh, Division 3 had an off day, going down by 45 shots. The pride was the only loser, as the team is still in the four. The bright spot was a five shot win by Jim Westwell, Gwen Clough, Peter Hayden and Heather Naismith (22-17), while the other teams of Rhonda Diaper, June Damon, Brian Diaper and Geoff Ampt (11-36) and Jen Sherry, Ron Beverley, Ian Kitt and Ray Wood (5-30) failed to fire. The Cranbourne Cup runneth over By David Nagel A TOUCH of lady luck returned to the Cranbourne racing industry on Saturday night with magnificent weather providing the perfect backdrop to the City of Casey Tricodes event. The Cranbourne Turf Club suffered a major blow last month when high winds forced the abandonment of its feature race meeting of the year. The two main races on the card, the Cranbourne Cup and Apache Cat Classic have been rescheduled to 3 March next year. But brilliant weather greeted participants and patrons on Saturday night as the thoroughbred, harness and greyhound communities combined for a high-quality 23-race meeting. Australia’s busiest racing venue shone brightly as the three codes ran together like clockwork, with seven thoroughbred and eight harness and greyhound races making up the card. Jockey Andrew Mallyon rode a treble to steal the show in the thoroughbreds, combining with trainers John O’Shea, David Hayes and Matt Laurie. Stephen Brown rode a double, while Laurie secured a training double with Doctor’s Mistress and Rokeby Red taking out the final two races on the program. Trainer Steve O’Donoghue and driver Rebecca Bartley combined for a winning double in the harness, with Kylee Paull securing the most exciting win of the night aboard Whiskey Business in the Aldebaran Park Monte. Just like Tricodes, the Monte is a unique event with drivers becoming riders as they sit on the horses back instead of driving in a sulky. Trainer Amy Lauterboom took

The transfer of the Cranbourne Cup meeting to next year will provide local racegoers with a smorgasbord of action in 2017. The switch means next year there will be two editions of the Cranbourne Cup and the Apache Cat Classic (1000m). But both races will be amended for 3 March. The Cranbourne Cup, normally a Listed race run over 2025 metres and worth $300,000, has been downgraded to a $150,000 Open race over 1600 metres. The first running of the Apache Cat in 2017 will be a 1200 metre open handicap worth $80,000, with $20,000 chopped off the usual prize pool. “As a result of this decision there will be two editions of the TAB Cranbourne Cup and Procon Developments Apache Cat Classic run in the 2017 calendar year," Racing
Victoria’s racing operations manager Paul Bloodworth said. “The Cup will revert to a Listed race over 2025m in October 2017, while the Classic will return to its traditional distance of 1000m at the same meeting." Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge said the first instalment of the Cup next year will serve as a timely pointer to their celebrations the following month. “Whilst the club was devastated with the abandonment of the Cup in spring, the rescheduled Cup provides the club with an opportunity to run our premier race under lights for the first time," Bainbridge said. “We thank Racing Victoria and Country Racing Victoria for their support in allowing the club to reschedule our premier raceday this season. "The March running of the TAB Cranbourne Cup forms part of a big autumn for the Club as we celebrate our 150th anniversary on Friday, 21 April 2017."
CRANBOURNE BOWLS WITH over 104 ladies representing 26 teams competing from around the state, the Cranbourne committee of the Invitation Ladies Fours Tournament put on a pretty good show. In fact after the last bowl was played, the winning team eventually won on a countback divided by the smallest percentage margin. The girls enjoyed the great spirit of the competition as well as the excellent food and hospitality provided for them on the day. The winning team from Leongatha received their first prize awards from Trios Operations Manager, John Lawler, and tournament committee member, Isobel Partington. In club competition during the week, things were not so rosy with the Cranbourne ladies side losing by two shots and that seemed to start the trend for narrow losing margins on Saturday, with the top side losing by four shots, the second side losing by three shots and the third side losing by 12 shots. There’s no reason to panic yet but the selectors were not very impressed with the results. MIDWEEK - Round 8 Side 1 Division 1 Ladies Cranbourne 60 lost to Mulgrave Country club 62 (C Wright 21-17, S Venville 20-16 and F Farrall 19-29). Side 2 Division 1 Open Cranbourne 43 lost to Cardinia Waters 72 (J Stanley 20-16, J McKenna 8-29; and P De Lisle 15-27). SATURDAY - Round 6 Side 1 Division 2 Cranbourne 74 lost to Vermont South 78 (P Elgar 11-28 D Boggie 24-16, I Barrenger 20-13, and N Hardy 19-21). Side 2 Division 3 Cranbourne 74 lost to Glen Waverley 77 (G Dudink 18-20; J McKenna 17-20; T Collins 2515 and G Hunt 14-22). Side 3 Division 4 Cranbourne 66 lost to Murrumbeena 78 (C Wright 21-19, J Kent 18-11, S De Piazza 15-25 and R Sorrensen 12-23).

Hyundai unwraps upgrades By Derek Ogden BE AFRAID, be very afraid: that seems to be the message Hyundai is sending out to rivals of its best-selling i30 after the hatchback became Australia’s favourite vehicle for the first half of the year. Almost straight away the South Korean car maker fired a further shot across the small-car market bow by adding upgrades to the sporty Series II SR and SR Premium variants. Now it has taken the wraps off the next generation i30, to hit the streets early next year, which it says digs deep into the Hyundai DNA and is touted as a car for everyone. In the meantime, leading off the latest makeover of the current i30 are a new design of 17-inch, grey-metallic machined-face alloy wheels and red-on-black interior with leatherappointed sports bucket seats, while SR variants with Hyundai’s six-speed automatic transmission now come standard with steering wheel-mounted paddle-shifts. Slotting in the Series II range midmarket the i30 2.0 SR petrol manual sells for $26,550 ($28,850 automatic) and the i30 2.0 SR Premium petrol manual for $31,250 ($33,550); plus on-road costs in both cases. Machined alloy wheels add a touch of spice to the Hyundai i30 Series II SR. playlist with the i30 Series II featuring a deep front grille that closely aligns it with its upmarket, Fluidic Sculpture 2.0-designed Sonata and Genesis stablemates. Hyundai’s panoramic glass sunroof is now available as an option on i30 SR, remaining standard on the SR Premium. The i30 Series II SR range now features an upgraded sports interior, with black leather upholstery, red inserts on seat bolsters, and red stitching on the
seats, steering wheel, and front door armrests. Front sports bucket seats with extended bolsters not only add to the visual impact, but also provide more lateral support for the driver and front passenger during enthusiastic driving. Dark grey-metallic interior trim highlights replace the previous silver trim highlights in all variants, and the headlining is now black (previously grey).
A striking red push-button start surround trim replaces the previous silver trim surround. SR, SR Premium variants retain Hyundai’s 7.0-inch touchscreen satellite-navigation system with CD-player. Hyundai i30 Series II’s petrol engine line-up is Euro 5 compliant. Both the 2.0 GDi (SR and SR Premium) petrol engines are available with either six-speed manual or sixspeed automatic transmissions.
Electronic stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, vehicle stability management, along with a full suite of airbags have earned the 130 Series II a five-star ANCAP safety rating Keyless entry and push-button engine start make for a welcome more normally found in vehicles of pedigree beyond the small passenger variety. The tried and tested free-revving 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol engine had the Series II SR in full flight on the open road with fuel consumption of 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres on a motorway run. Around town it gulped almost twice as much (9.4 litres). The sports seats look good and held occupants comfortably yet firmly during ride and handling expected of a vehicle whose suspension was given a thorough workout by Aussie engineers. A generous cargo area offers ample space for shopping or luggage and loading is made easy by a high-lift tailgate and low lip. The Hyundai i30 Series II continues to make its mark on the Australian small-car market, made even more appealing to European-style sporty hatchbacks.
