Don’t discount us By Alana Mitchelson MAIN Street Pakenham’s longest trading business Terry’s Pakenham Discounts is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month. Store owner Terry Baldwin, who has become known for his eccentric manner and dress sense, recalled his early days of working in the township before Main Street had pedestrian crossings. He has witnessed many changes across the region since 1986 when he began trading. “It took 11 minutes to get to the South Eastern Freeway in Dandenong from Pakenham,“ Mr Baldwin said. “There were no traffic lights, only lights at a pedestrian crossing in Officer. There were no childcare facilities in Pakenham, or gyms, and only one retirement village. “In May 1994 the council changed the streetscape of Main Street without consulting any traders and someone forgot to include a pedestrian crossing in the plans. I remember asking them how we were supposed to cross the street! “For about two weeks Main Street was blocked off to traffic. It was like a ghost town.” He said Pakenham Discounts had felt the impact of Target and Woolworths and experienced a 20 per cent drop in sales shortly after each store opened. With the growing competition, Mr Baldwin has been challenged to constantly diversify his stock, and provide other services or stock to meet the personalised needs of his customers such as replacing watch batteries. Prior to opening shop in Pakenham Mr Baldwin had worked at McDonalds and throughout the early ’80s he had worked his way up to a role as shift

In November ’86 Terry used all of his savings to take over the Pakenham Discounts business that had been launched by a friend’s father 12 months earlier. He said it had been a chance decision. “I gave my mate’s dad a hand at selling his final stock because he was closing the store down. It was being used to sell excess stock from his ware-
house,” Mr Baldwin said. “I was a bit cheeky and would wear purple shorts while working for a bit of fun, and I got a great response from customers. “I just got a bit of a good vibe and decided to give it a go. It was a low risk decision at the time.” For the first 10 years he traded with a one-year lease. The initial average customer count was 35. Pakenham Discounts had just

two wholesalers and rent was $120 a week. The business sometimes now sees more than 200 customers through its doors and deals with about 70 wholesalers from across Australia. The Baldwins have lived in Berwick since 1998 and were married at the iconic Clover Cottage. His wife Emma is heavily involved with the business’ bookwork as well as ordering in stock and she also works in the store, juggling her occupational
therapist job while raising their two children, 10-year-old Tyler and twoyear-old Elisha. Loyal staff member Chionia Ellis, who now plays an important role in the shop, was once a regular customer who would often bring her three daughters in to the store. Mr Baldwin said he now has about 30 regular customers who are over 90 years old and he also serves third generation customers. He said there are many challenges facing retailers - the rising cost of rent, the popularity and convenience of online shopping, shop theft and lack of support from the council. “There is no chamber of commerce for Pakenham traders. We formed a business group that only lasted a couple of years because half of Main Street is banks and real estate, and shops in Pakenham Place and Marketplace have their own agenda,” he said. “Poor John Street is really struggling. “There needs to be a joint venture with the support of an impartial council delegate for it to work because, in the end, any trader would come with their own bias. “I think some form of traders’ group is critical for the future success of Main Street.” Mr Baldwin said his business has adapted to the changing demands of residents throughout the years. “For the past 10 years, sales haven’t gone up at the same rate as rent has risen,” he said. “But I’ve worked too hard to get to this point to walk away. “Over the years we’ve expanded our dress ups, our crafts have tripled and we would have the biggest ribbon section in Victoria. “Our store has become a reflection of what our customers ask for.”

Gazette impresses press THE Pakenham-Berwick Gazette’s production quality and journalism have been lauded by judges in the Victorian Country Press Association’s annual awards. The 107-year-old family owned and independent paper picked up the prize for Best Use of Colour in the over 6000 circulation category. Judge Alan Pont, a former Rural Press and Fairfax executive, described the Gazette as “a well presented package from back to front”. Mr Pont was impressed by the strong headlines, photos and catchy pointers on the front pages, the welldesigned colour advertisements and plentiful action photos in sport. “It was another consistent and excellent performance,” he said. Reporter Aneeka Simonis received glowing praise for her series of stories on waiting room safety concerns at Casey Hospital, a runner-up in the Local Reporting category. Judge Patrick Elligett, a former regional daily editor and news director for The New Daily, said the three pieces of reporting used local sources to advance an important community safety issue. “Well written and presented, the journalist used her knowledge of related issues to place the story in a broader context,” Mr Elligett said. “A follow-up piece looking at the issue from the perspective of local police added an alternative, yet complementary, angle to the story. It also demonstrated to the reader that the lack of adequate mental health facilities was not an isolated issue for the health care sector, but highlighting the impact on broader community safety. “Affecting real-world change is an excellent measure of good local news reporting and this story certainly

Ms Simonis’ work was also praised by RMIT university lecturer Dr Mandy Oakham, when judging the Award for Journalism category. “The runner-up in this section is a judge’s favourite,” Dr Oakham said. “First impressions always count
with this newspaper, presenting front pages which are thought-provoking and genuinely moving and again the work of Garry Howe is to be commended with intros like ‘The second telegram killed her’. “This very fine newspaper consistently produces headlines that are genuine stop-in-your-tracks alerts like Stopping The Rot and War’s Broken Heart and its catchline says it all - Connecting People and Communities. “Page after page opens to very strong local reporting with the work of Aneeka Simonis being particularly notable with her efforts to focus community attention on the not-so-comfortable topics of domestic violence

Respect all in the family By Alana Mitchelson GENERATIONS of families turned out to pay their respects to former serving ancestors on Remembrance Day in Pakenham and Officer. Dozens of people gathered at the town cenotaph in Pakenham while hundreds congregated at the Officer Memorial Gates in silence to acknowledge the sacrifices made by servicemen and servicewomen. Pakenham’s Ian Smith brought his grandchildren to pay tribute to their past serving family members. He wore his father Stan Smith’s war medals while his three grandsons, Max, Jack and Harrison, attended the ceremony holding medals awarded to their greatgrandfather Jack Dollman. Norm Joseph from Pakenham laid a poppy at the foot of the cenotaph during the ceremony. He served in the 18th Brigade during World War II, partly alongside his father Ben Joseph who also served in World War I. Officer residents continued the tradition of tying poppies and sprigs to the memorial gates at the conclusion of the ceremony in honour of the fallen. Betty Whiteside, the daughter of WWI returned soldier Sergeant Clair Whiteside and former local councillor, read the prayer prior to sharing a minute’s silence. Officer and District Community Association vice-president Annette Aldersea said about 300 people attended the Officer service. “We had a great turnout and a large number of school children, which is extremely pleasing,” she said. “As always, it was a moving and lovely service.” Students from Officer Secondary College acted as flag bearers while Officer Primary School students led the singing of the national anthem.

A council report says its bin collection service could be improved.
RAPID residential development is being blamed for expensive and sluggish waste collection by Cardinia Shire Council. More bins were missed during kerbside collection in Cardinia shire in 2015-16 than in similar councils, and ratepayers were slugged with $24 more in waste pick-up fees per bin. It costs Cardinia shire households $120 per bin in kerbside collection fees each year, compared with several similar interface
councils including Casey which charge an average of $95 per bin. Service standards also slipped. Uncollected bin rates, at 10 per 10,000 in Cardinia shire, was more than doubled the average recorded in Victorian councils in 2015-16. The council also received 190 calls per 1,000 households requesting their bins be collected, which was close to double the number that other councils received. New developments were blamed for the bad report. “The number of missed collec-

A COUPLE of truck drivers and their mates have done the extraordinary, organising a massive family day to help out their close friend who has fallen ill with cancer for the third time. Stuart Smith and Travis Smith grew up with Tooradin couple Matt and Mel and when they found out a few months ago that Mel had been struck down with cancer for the third time, the guys knew they had to do something. It was then that the “Better Life for Mel” event was born and the guys started organising a family fun day as well as truck, car and bike show and shine to raise a bit of money to help their mate’s family. “A very good friend of ours has got cancer for the third time, and we just found out two months ago,” Stuart said. “Me along with Travis and a couple of other boys decided to run a bit of a fund-raiser to help with medical bills and other things.” Since deciding to put the fund-raiser together, the mates have found their skills at event organisation were much better
than they first thought. “We had a meeting with Luke and Debbie from the Turf Club, and they gave us a venue and we thought we would run a little truck car and bike show and shine,” Stuart said. “We are having a silent action in the big shed, and so far around $20,000 worth of gear has been donated for auction and raffles.” The event has grown into a full day of family fun with live music, door prize, a celebrity appearance, kid’s activities, market stalls, catering and heaps more. “The majority has been from local business,” Stuart said. “We’ll be running a few raffles during the day, and it’s still in planning but we’ve got prizes like fishing trips and a holiday of five nights at Broadbeach in Queensland. “Shane Crawford will be here drawing the door prize which is a $3000 packing from Focus on Furniture as well as signing few footies on the day. “There will also be Mel’s choice trophies awarded to the best presented truck car and bike.”

Police dogs put bite on By Cam Lucadou-Wells A MAN who was bitten by police dogs in a Cranbourne backyard at the end of a 55-minute police pursuit through Melbourne’s south-east has pleaded guilty to an early September burglary spree in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Bradley Haverkamp, of Keysborough, had been accused of attempting to ram a marked police vehicle signalling for him to pull over on Princes Highway, Dandenong, just after midnight on 7 September. The court heard on 15 November that the police officer had to accelerate their vehicle to avoid Haverkamp’s stolen white Volvo. Haverkamp pulled a U-turn and was pursued at a “fast rate

of speed” by police Air Wing through Dandenong, Rowville, Lyndhurst and Cranbourne. Police successfully used stop-sticks to bring the fleeing vehicle to a halt in Cranbourne. Haverkamp and a co-accused male passenger jumped fences and tried to hide in backyards as they were pursued by the police Canine Squad and Air Wing. They were found in a Sladen Street backyard. Haverkamp was taken to Dandenong Hospital with dogbite wounds before he was interviewed by police, the court was told. The Volvo had been stolen by an unknown offender from a South Yarra driveway about 11am on 25 July, the court heard. The victim’s dog, which had
been on the front passenger seat at the time, was released from the vehicle at Punt Road during the thief’s escape. The Volvo was later used during break-ins at a Heyfield refrigeration premises, a Traralgon Chinese restaurant and a Footscray car showroom in the week before the pursuit. Haverkamp pleaded guilty to the burglaries and stealing six computer tablets, a Patrol ute laden with tools, $2280 welders, $3000 in Suzuki engine parts, a $5000 car diagnostic unit, a $3000 laptop and a mobile phone. The accused also faced a charge of driving while suspended in February. Haverkamp was remanded for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 6 December.

But the strength shown by local Cranbourne and Narre Warren community members was a public display of support for anyone in the City of Casey with a cancer experience. So far, over $50,000 has been raised by Cranbourne-Narre relayers, which will help fund Cancer Council Victoria’s support, prevention and research programs. steady on her feet and “causing trouble� at the shopping centre early on 6 January. Helped by police and paramedics, she was unable to respond to the most basic of questions. Found in her handbag was a container of 70mg of clear liquid believed to be the drug GHB. The judge told her she was lucky the scene happened in a public place so emergency services could be promptly called. “That’s very sad that when you’re asked for your name, you couldn’t even say it. “Even a two-year-old can say their name.�

RSL slams rider’s respect By Cam Lucadou-Wells A MONKEY bike rider who interrupted a Remembrance Day service in Endeavour Hills has been slammed for his lack of respect as well as his recklessness. Under new State laws, riders of monkey bikes in public will no longer be just slapped with fines but can have their bikes impounded and crushed. Star News photographer Stewart Chambers captured a young male rider without a helmet or number plates riding past the Remembrance Day gathering at Endeavour Hills memorial on 8 November. The nonchalant rider then squeezed his bike between a car and a garbage truck at traffic lights at Heatherton Road. Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL president John Wells, who paused his address during the interjection, later said it was symbolic of a growing lack of respect and courtesy. “In the old days, the traffic and people would stop during the service as a mark of respect. “He wouldn’t have even understood he did anything wrong. “It’s a shame we haven’t taught these children about showing respect. We have children who genuinely can’t think beyond themselves.” Sergeant John Blackburn, of Endeavour Hills police, also observed the rider at the service. He said police were concerned by “numerous” under-age riders imperilling pedestrians on local footpaths, reserves, car parks, roads and the Endeavour Hills shopping centre. “We’ve got a lot of elderly people and young kids in the area. “These kids riding have got no idea of safety and the well-being of pedestrians in the area. “They don’t know the consequences
if they hit someone and the damage they can do to themselves riding these things.” Sgt Blackburn said police sought information on who were the riders and where the bikes were coming from. Often the riders weren’t licenced and their bikes were unregistered, he said. “Parents should know the riders have the bikes. They need to take responsibility and prevent the use. “As the weather gets warmer, we normally see them come out more often.” Two Victorians have died in monkey-bike incidents the past 18 months, including a mother-of-two struck by a monkey bike in a Carrum Downs shopping centre car park last year. In laws introduced in State Parliament in October, monkey bikes used on public roads can be seized, and the offender taken to court and fined up to $3109. At the discretion of the court, the bike may be crushed. Bikes found without a rider can be impounded and crushed after three months. Previously, offenders faced no more than a fine for riding an unregistered vehicle - unless they were riding recklessly or speeding. Roads and Roads Safety Minister Luke Donnellan, also the MP for Narre Warren North, said monkey bikes were unsafe. “If you’re riding one in public, you’re breaking the law. “Police won’t be granting second chances when it comes to keeping these bikes off our streets, and keeping people safe.” Premier Daniel Andrews said the government wouldn’t “stand by and watch another person hurt on our roads by these dangerous bikes”.

Police clean up drug lab By Cam Lucadou-Wells A NARRE Warren man who claimed a collection of solvents, burners, heat plates, filtration systems and scientific glassware in his home was used to make cleaning fluid has been jailed for drug trafficking. Zoran Dukic, 51, had previously worked in his son’s pizza shop and denied to police that he was cooking drugs in his unit. The 140 exhibits seized during a police raid on 25 February 2015 included two pre-cursors for manufacturing ice and a dieting agent also used as a ‘cutting’ agent for illicit drugs. It was a set-up that exasperated his then-girlfriend who complained of the “stinky chemicals”. More than four kilograms of 1, 4-butynediol double the commercial trafficable amount - was found as a green solution in a white plastic tub on the dining room floor. Judge Frances Hogan, in her sentencing remarks at the County Court of Victoria on 10 November, described 1, 4-butynediol as an industrial solvent that may be used as a cleaning agent.
When used as an illicit drug, so-called One Four Bee creates a similar biological effect to GHB. Six portions of the drug ice - adding up to 58 grams - were found with varying purities throughout the house. It was more than 19 times more than the legally defined trafficable quantity. Judge Hogan said prosecutors were unable to disprove Dukic’s claims that the items were used to make cleaners to clean grills and filters from his son’s pizza shop. On the other hand, Judge Hogan noted Dukic didn’t provide evidence of sales or witnesses to corroborate his alleged cleaner product enterprise. Nor did the then-unemployed accused explain how he paid rent and for his girlfriend’s son’s trip to Singapore. “You may have been making some cleaning fluid but I’m not satisfied, on the balance of probabilities, that was your sole occupation or means of earning money,” Judge Hogan said. The Crown was also unable to prove that Dukic knew he was trafficking a commercial quantity.

Instead Dukic pleaded guilty to lesser offences of simply trafficking ice and 1, 4-butynediol. Dukic also pleaded guilty to being equipped for trafficking a drug of dependence, possessing a Taser as well as 12-gauge shotgun and 1.38-calibre rimless handgun ammunition. Judge Hogan didn’t accept claims that the accused had a gram-a-day ice addiction and that he was selling drugs solely to support his drug use. She noted Dukic had been given previous opportunities to rehabilitate from drug addiction during a criminal record including trafficking heroin in the 1990s. He had also been jailed in 2010 for stalking, recklessly causing injury, common law assault and breaching an intervention order, suspended sentence and a community corrections order. “I have no reason to assume your prospects for rehabilitation are good,” Judge Hogan said. She jailed Dukic for three years, with a two-year non-parole period. The term included 624 days of pre-sentence detention.

A DESPERATELY needed $15,000 wheelchair was seemingly out of reach for 10-yearold Indi Marinucci. That was until a wellspring of ‘people power’ in Berwick Springs estate came to the rescue. Unable to receive the funds through disability services, her single mother Antonella Marinucci seemed to have run out of options. “She’d been crying for a chair. I was going to bed just thinking how will we do this,” Ms Marinucci said. “I was embarrassed and felt I was not supporting my own children.” Her friends at a Berwick Springs running club suggested she “put it out there” and helped her organise a 5-kilometre fundraising event ‘Run For Indi’. Event T-shirts and a fetching slogan “We run so Indi can roll” were designed, but an overwhelming $17,000 response on a crowdfunding site made the event redundant. Instead, the 12 November event was transformed into a celebration as Indi was presented with her new chair. It has been a two-year wait for the upgrade, Ms Marinucci said. Indi, afflicted by cerebral palsy, had outgrown her previ-

ous dilapidated chair. Surgeons had postponed an operation to correct Indi’s feet until she had a correctly sized chair. That is now back on track. Ms Marinucci said it broke her heart to see Indi’s legs “hanging” uncomfortably over the chair’s footrest. Gaffer tape was being used to hold Indi’s feet off to the side. Indi’s neck and back posture was also out of kilter. “Now her head is up. Her legs are straight,” Ms Marinucci said. “I just feel a release.”

New store shines brightly By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE woman responsible for bringing the massively successful jewellery brand Pandora to Australia has partnered with a new jewellery brand and has opened the first Australian Alex and Ani store at Fountain Gate. Karin Adcock, founder and CEO of House of Brands, launched the new store on the night of Tuesday 15 November and said Fountain Gate and the Narre Warren area was the perfect place to do it. “We had a list of about 15 shopping centres we would like to be in and it is hard to get a good site in shopping centres because stores are always full,” Ms Adcock said. “Fountain Gate came up with a good location first and we said no to a lot of locations that weren’t right. “This is a very good shopping centre for our
demographics and better and more suitable than somewhere like Chadstone. “We stand out more in Fountain Gate and for our first store it is a great location for us.” Ms Adcock said Alex and Ani is a unique brand with a strong sense of worth that gives back to the community while offering a beautiful product. Ms Adcock explained that Alex and Ani jewellery is built on four pillars that makes it unique as well as. “The jewellery is made out of recycled brass, recycled door handles, picture frames and things like that with a gold or silver finish so it has a life of its own before and now is jewellery,” she said. “It is made in US with love. It is made on Rhode Island which used to be the jewellery capital of the world. “It is infused with posi-
tive energy and is all about positivity and meanings that connects people with lots of symbols that have many meanings for different people. “The last pillar is Charity by Design. A very big part of our business is charity and it is very exciting to have such a strong affinity with charities and to give back to the community.” All jewellery sold from the Alex and Ani brand in Australia will support four charity partners the RSPCA, Lifeline, the Special Olympics, and UNICEF. “I see Alex and Ani as different and unique, offering to fill a gap in the market for what we are offering,” Ms Adcock said. “We have a really serious opportunity to do something exciting with this band in the market and how customers are engaging makes me really excited and tells me we are on the right track.”

600 jobs created A $40 million twin office building project in Fountain Gate is expected to create about 600 jobs. CubeOne, which will house 39 office suites for local, smallto-medium enterprises, was officially launched by developer MAB Corporation on 26 October. The buildings are designed by Watson Young, providing flexible layouts, shared meeting facilities and cutting-edge office technology. It is the corporation’s first commercial office project in Melbourne’s south east. MAB commercial projects director Andrew White said “satellite” commercial precincts were growing with the desire for people to work close to home. “MAB saw an opportunity in Casey similar to what we have experienced in the northern re-
gions of Melbourne.” The site was also chosen for its freeway access, public transport links, bike tracks and walkability. At the launch, Casey chief executive Mike Tyler said the development would help bring to life the Fountain Gate - Narre Warren precinct as a “premier CBD for Melbourne’s south-east”. It was a “vitally important” project to improve local employment and liveability in Casey’s rapidly expanding population and economy, Mr Tyler said. “With more than 70 per cent of City of Casey and Shire of Cardinia residents commuting outside of the municipality to work each day, more opportunities to work locally are vitally important to our residents.”

CHAMPAGNE corks popped and beer flowed on Monday night as the Casey Cardinia region celebrated big wins at the Australian Hotels Association state awards for excellence. Beaconsfield’s Cardinia Park Hotel won the regional hotel of the year title and Zagame’s Berwick took out the title of metropolitan hotel of the year. Zagame’s Berwick also won the award for best metropolitan sports bar and the Cardinia Park Hotel won best regional bistro. Another local winner was Kelly’s Motor Club Hotel Cranbourne which was recognised for outstanding achievement in training. Frank Deegan, owner of the Cardinia Park Hotel, said he was still in shock when he spoke to Star News on Tuesday. “I was really quite shocked. I didn’t expect to win, not at all. When I looked at the other finalists in our category there were some really good hotels, I was just staggered.“ Mr Deegan attributed the win to “customer service and attention to detail“ thanking staff and patrons. “Cardinia Park Hotel is a pretty place, it’s a boutique-y kind of pub if you like. Our customers are sensational. They have really embraced the hotel since the renovation.“ Mr Deegan purchased the hotel five years ago and instigated major renovations to the 1870s hotel 18 months ago. “We are really focused on food. We also won best bistro which is a real credit to the chefs and front of house people. “I really thank our customers for making this happen. They have supported us in a way I did not think was possible when we started out.“ Mr Deegan said his staff, including three sons who also work in the business, celebrated long and hard on Monday night. “I had a liquor accord meeting at 10am (Tuesday) with the police, but my sons made up for me when it came to celebrating.“ Mr Deegan’s son Francis runs Cardinia Park, another son Patrick is in charge at the Central Hotel and third son Fred is the group’s accountant.

It was very well patronised on a Thursday afternoon. The food was very nice and well-presented. The staff were well-trained and extremely pleasant.“ At Zagames the sports bar particularly impressed the judges. “The range of screens in this sports bar was amazing,“ the judges wrote.
“Some really big screens and we thought the range of seating options was excellent. The staff were working hard to keep patrons being served quickly. There was also a staff member walking around trying to keep the room tidy, which was a big job as there were many patrons in attendance. “The venue is very well-presented inside and out. It is a very large dining room, but is fitted out to still feel cosy and comfortable, and also not too noisy, even with so many people there.“ The AHA State Awards for Excellence program was established in the late 1980s to recognise hotels and pubs in Victoria that demonstrate excellence across a range of categories.

Steph loves beating odds By David Nagel STEPHANIE Phillips may have rewritten the record books on Saturday, but it’s the story behind her story that helps dry the ink on the most remarkable chapter of her career. The 28-year-old from Narre Warren claimed a hat-trick on her way to the unbelievable figures of 8/9 off 5.2 overs in Carlisle Park’s victory over Cranbourne Meadows in the WGCA One-Day Competition. Her figures set a club and competition record, her hat-trick the second of her career after claiming the rarest of cricketing milestones all the way back in the Under 13s. Stephanie Phillips loves cricket, she has since the age of seven, and it’s fortunate too, because without that passion she wouldn’t have been on Don Jackson Reserve in the first place. A talented junior, she was making her way through the ranks with Buckley Ridges when a freak accident changed her life forever. Steph was at school when it happened. “Two lockers fell over and I got caught between them and one of them sliced open the back of my leg from the
knee all the way down to the heel,” she said. “I had 200 stitches in the back of my leg and the doctors told me I would never play cricket again. It was really disappointing because I was in the process of trying out for the state.” Despite her setback, Steph would not be denied, a combination of intense physio and a fierce determination to prove people wrong would become the driving forces behind her journey back to the crease. After four years away from the game, and two years of indoor cricket, she joined her brothers Ben and James at Carlisle Park last season. But her story - and the hurdles don’t end there. “I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 20 and last year I collapsed on the field,” she said. “I just need to look after myself and keep hydrated, that’s the most important thing. When you’re playing cricket dealing with the heat in the middle of summer is the hardest part. It’s a constant battle with the epilepsy and the injury. I get pain in my knee, and my hip aches, but I love the game and would do anything to be out there

Kevin has a broken finger so missed his daughter’s heroics. “Dad’s really annoyed that he wasn’t out there with me but it was still great to do it in front of family and friends,” Steph said. “My Mum (Nicola) was there, my sister (Jennifer) was scoring and there were a couple of ladies in the crowd who are super important to me. I’ve played indoor and outdoor cricket all my life with Sandy Davies and Margie Fuller and they’ve been huge mentors for me. That was nearly the best memory of the day, the way people were reacting as the day wore on.” Steph’s hat-trick was also a family affair, with younger brother James catching the first wicket, the second cleaned bowled, before older brother Ben held on to a hot chance - close in on the leg side - to complete a milestone that had been a long-time coming. “It was the third hat-trick I was on for the day, and it was great to have both of my brothers involved,” Steph said. “They’ve played a big part in my cricket - I had to learn how to throw before I could walk.”

CRANBOURNE is the 2016 Harness Racing Victoria Country Club of the Year. Announced during the Country Clubs section of Harness Racing Victoria’s (HRV’s) annual Gordon Rothacker Medal awards last week at Crown Palladium, Cranbourne’s committee was on hand to accept the gong. “We’ve got a marvellous group of volunteers and a fabulous committee to help us run the club and we’ve also got a very professional CEO in Neil Bainbridge,” Cranbourne president Duncan McPherson said. “We’re lucky we benefit with the multi-use of the venue with two other racing codes.” McPherson said working alongside such passionate people was great fun. “These guys are a very good crew. They’re very professional, great fun, super fellowship and for all of us we just really enjoy it,” he said. Cranbourne was awarded the Club of the Year trophy for its efforts to bolster engagement and participation in the region through a strategic direction. The club’s training centre is also stronger than ever, while the club has thrown its weight behind the important area of ownership promotion by making syndication as easy and affordable as possible. Cranbourne also hosted a variety of race nights to introduce new people to the trots, including an ’aging positively’ night and a ’girls’ night out’. WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION ROUND 5 - REVIEW (Saturday and Sunday) KOOWEERUP number three bat Ben Spicer has struck a brutal century in another fascinating weekend in the Premier Division. Spicer struck an unbeaten 150, as the Demons dismantled Emerald by over 200 runs at Chandler Reserve. In reply to the Demons imposing 6/315 declared, the Bombers could only make 122, as Mark Cooper (5/25) ran amok. Bombers keeper Andrew Alenson provided some resistance, scoring a classy 42, as others fell around him. The win leaves the Demons in second-spot, while Emerald are languishing at the bottom of the table. Kooweerup will travel to face Pakenham Upper/Toomuc next round, while Emerald play Pakenham. Pakenham Upper/Toomuc has been thrashed by Upper Beaconsfield, as the Maroons continue their surge up the ladder. Sent into bat by the Yabbies, the Maroons were destructive, posting 8/326 off the back of a top knock by Jack McHale (99). Unfortunately for McHale, he was run out, denied the chance for a maiden century. In reply, the Yabbies were never really a chance, and limped their way to just 185, as Scott Pitcher (5/52) toyed with the batsmen. But in a bright spot on a disappointing weekend for the Yabbies, opening batsman Daniel Strahan continued his excellent start to the season, making a fighting 90 before also being unluckily run out. Upper Beaconsfield faces a crunch clash against Tooradin next round, while Pakenham Upper/Toomuc play a red-hot Kooweerup. Tom Hussey has crunched a century in Tooradin’s dominant victory over Merinda Park at Donnelly Reserve. Hussey made 120, as the Seagulls made 8/300 off 80 overs. Kade Burns (45) and Josh Lownds (42) were also amongst the runs, while stalwart Leigh Paterson (6/96) toiled hard for the Cobras. With a daunting task ahead of them, it was integral that the Cobras got off to a smooth start. But Seagulls opening bowler Kade Burns (4/56) removed both openers without scoring, as the Cobras limped their way to a disappointing 166. Apart from Burns, Dylan Sutton (3/16) was also impressive with the ball, while Josh Lownds (2/45) continued his solid start to the season. With the bat, Cobras middle-order gun Dylan Cuthbertson (70) was a shining light, while Leigh Paterson (29 not out) also fought hard. The win leaves the Seagulls perched on top of the ladder, while the Cobras are equal last. Tooradin face Upper Beaconsfield in a vital
clash next round, while Merinda Park will look to notch up their first win against Cardinia. Cardinia has just pipped Pakenham in an epic clash at Toomuc Reserve. The Lions sent the Bulls into bat, where Neil Barfuss (31) stood out in a disappointing total of just 117. Tommy Tyrrell (3/39) was the pick of the bowlers, while Jack Ryan, Tom Jones and Chris Savage chimed in with two wickets each. With the Lions chasing a small total, Bulls bowlers Dwayne Doig (5/47) and David Kingston (3/28) were sensational, as they bowled out the opposition for 116, two runs short of victory. Lions keeper Rob Elston (31) was composed with the bat, but the top order simply didn’t do enough. Cardinia will look to carry their momentum against Merinda Park next week, while Pakenham faces bottom side Emerald. Meanwhile in the District Division, Clyde is now breathing down Devon Meadows' neck at the top of the ladder, after thrashing Nar Nar Goon/ Maryknoll. Sending in the Marygoons to bat, they got off to a solid start, but fell away for just 173 off 59.2 overs. Patrick Lawson (3/41) was destructive with the new ball, while Nick Miles (3/19) was also amongst the wickets. In response, the Cougars were excellent with the bat, making 257. Wicket-keeper James Abou-Jaber made a half century, while Nick Sadler (42) was valuable late in the innings. League leaders Devon Meadows have survived an early scare, defeating Carlisle Park by four wickets. The Vikings batted first, posting 144, off the back of a terrific knock by Travis Canavan (63). But a sensational bowling performance by Lucas Carroll (5/32) ensured the Panthers remained in the box seat. A series of strong partnerships by batsman Scott Clark (47), Jason Dodd (52 not out) and Lucas Carroll (33), ensured the Panthers could overtake the Vikings with four wickets to spare. Kalgidhar has survived a tense battle, winning a crucial clash against Tooradin by three wickets. The Seagulls elected to bat first, and off the back of opener Bradey Welsh (68) and Tim Lenders (52), got their side to an easily defendable 174. Gagan Singla (4/52) was once again impressive, while fellow bowlers Ashish Uppal (2/16) and Amandeep Singh (2/15) took wickets. Kalgidhar were able to reach the total with three wickets to spare. Skipper Rupinder Singh (53) made a second consecutive half century, while opening batsman Sunny Paul (43), performed strongly. Despite the best efforts of Seagulls bowler Bailey Lownds (4/41 off 28 overs), they just fell
short. An ugly on-field incident between two players has marred the Officer and Cranbourne Meadows clash at Officer Reserve. Despite a terrific win by the Bullants, the altercation is going to have some serious ramifications. It is believed two players where involved in a verbal and physical altercation. The Bullants sent the Rebels into bat, where they limped to 9/141 off 77 overs, with Ben Warren-Smith (52) fighting hard. David Collins (3/35) was excellent with the ball, while Stephen Alderton (4/19) was consistent as always. In response, the Bullants were clinical with the bat, plundering 269 off 64.4 overs, with Stephen Alderton (70) and Peter Quinn (56) playing splendid knocks. In Sub-District, Clyde has continued their strong start to the season, comfortably accounting for Gembrook. Winning the toss and batting, the Brookers could only muster up 110. Braydon Bowes (4/36) was the chief destroyer, as Joel Avard (2/11) and Thomas Sinnema (2/23) provided support. In response, the Cougars, despite a series of starts by the top-order, reached 9/223, before declaring after 51 overs. Nyora has pipped Aura Vale in a thrilling and low-scoring match. Sent into bat, the Maroons could only muster 79, as Christian Webb (3/17) tore them to shreds. But in response, the Maroons bowling unit was too strong, rolling the Lakers for just 76, three runs short of victory. Catani has moved into second spot after dismantling Lang Lang at Catani Reserve. After the Swamp Tigers sent the Cats into bat, they produced 9/224 off their 80 overs. Despite the large total, Swamp Tigers bowlers Ricky Caddell (2/13), Joseph Dalgleish (2/29) and Ross Douglas (2/27) were the major wickettakers. In reply, the Swamp Tigers were bowled out for just 107 off 48.1 overs. Pakenham has annihilated Cardinia at E Gunton Oval, defeating the Bulls outright. After the Lions limped their way to just 155, the outright victory did not look possible. Trent Wheller (5/38) continues to take plenty of wickets for the Bulls. The Bulls, however, capitulated with the bat, and were rolled for 73, with Jack Melbourne (7/23) brilliant. The Lions then batted again, hitting their way to 107 all-out. With 189 runs for a reverse outright victory, the Bulls very nearly pulled it off, finishing on 152 on the back of a terrific half century by Trent Wheller.
