Crime at Apex MONDAY’S Westgate Bridge police pursuit drama has revealed profound crime links in the south east, and the Police Association of Victoria is blaming the failure to tackle crime ‘properly’ on a shortage of officers in Casey. Three young men from the south east suburbs of Melbourne were arrested on the Westgate Bridge on Monday 14 November following a spate of robberies in the northern suburbs. The offenders have been alleged to have links to violent criminal gangs that have been plaguing police and the communities of the Cranbourne and Dandenong areas. One of the 17-year-old boys from Cranbourne has been said to have links to the Apex gang and an 18-year-old from Hampton Park was on parole at the time of arrest. The three young offenders were remanded in custody after the high speed chase involving roughly 30 police members came to a dramatic end on the Westgate Bridge. Secretary of the Police Association of Victoria Ron Iddles has lashed out at youth offenders from south east Melbourne following the dramatic police chase. “We’ve been saying for a long time now that police numbers in Casey are totally inadequate and are nowhere near keeping pace with the area’s burgeoning population growth and out-of-control youth crime,� he said. “Casey has one of the worst police shortages in the state with the police-topopulation ratio sitting at about half of the state average. “This is not good for community safety, and also places our members at risk as they are burdened with unsustainably high workloads.� While Mr Iddles believes that the professionalism of Victoria Police is as strong as it ever was, he says there simply aren’t
enough officers to deal with the issues in the community. “Police are doing their very best but they are at breaking point and simply do not have the numbers working in stations they need to get the job done properly�. “Notwithstanding these problems, we have been heartened by our very constructive discussions with Police Minister Neville in recent weeks, and I’m optimistic that an agreed solution will come out of these talks.� Speaking with Neil Mitchell on 3AW, Mr Iddles took aim at the justice system and blamed the way youth are treated once they are incarcerated for their crimes and the ‘therapeutic model’ of youth crime rehabilitation. “Quite clearly I think it’s time to move on, time to stop holding hands and singing kumbaya,� he said during his radio interview this week. “The Department of Human Service commissioned a report which came out on the 4 November 2011 which costed (the therapeutic model) and for each additional youth if you used the therapeutic model, it was going to be $65,000 per year on top of other costs. “I don’t think they’ve ever funded it properly and it’s definitely not working.� According to the Department of Health and Human Services that oversee Youth Justice in Victoria, the aims of the current method of youth crime rehabilitation is to teach young people skills and lessons to keep them from reoffending. The department outlines objectives of the youth justice system that aims to stop young people progressing further into the legal system along with minimising the likelihood and chances for reoffending. The department also funds many rehabilitation programs in the youth justice area to help young people in desperate situations stay out of the criminal justice system.

No white knights here By Victoria Stone-Meadows CASEY City Council have gone against the trend of neighbouring councils and opted for a private White Ribbon event rather than a public show of support for the campaign to end family violence. City of Greater Dandenong and Cardinia Shire Council have confirmed they will be holding public events to raise awareness of issues surrounding family violence in support of the White Ribbon Campaign. However, the City of Casey confirmed on 10 November they will be holding an internal event with their staff members and staff from Multiplex; the company contracted to build Bunjil Place. City of Casey Manager Community Safety, Caroline Bell, said Casey Council are committed to addressing family violence in the municipality. “The City of Casey strongly sup-
ports White Ribbon Day as an important day to pause and reflect on the issue of family violence,” she said. “Council focuses every day on ways to prevent violence against women and children, in particular, by addressing the major driver of violence against women, gender inequality.” However, when asked for details of how City of Casey are raising awareness of family violence issues in the community and working towards combating this with support of the White Ribbon Campaign, no answer was forthcoming. “Details of how Council will acknowledge White Ribbon Day will be
provided next week,” Ms Bell said. The City of Casey has some of the highest incidences of family violence in the state according to the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency which uses police data to aggregate crime statistics. The Casey Municipal area had a family violence incident rate of 1,455.8 per 100,000 population in the 2015-’16 financial year, an increase of 12.5 per cent over the previous year. The state average for family violence incidents per 100,000 population for 2015-’16 was 1,061.8. Newly-elected returning mayor Sam Aziz said he was unaware of any inter-
Attack on police A POLICE officer has narrowly avoided injury after being hit by a Molotov cocktail that was thrown at him in Cranbourne North on the morning of Friday 11 November. Uniform members of Victoria Police were performing a welfare check at a house on Cypress Court at about 8.30am, where it was reported a man was unconscious in a car in the driveway. Police then called an ambulance that took the unconscious man to hospital, but two other cars arrived while they were still at the scene. Police allege a person in one of the cars threw a Molotov cocktail at them, which struck one of the officers. The cars then fled from the scene and police gave chase until Hallam Road in Hampton Park, where four people were arrested about 10.30am.

Historic back-to-back mayor shares his vision OUTSPOKEN Casey councillor Sam Aziz has been elected as mayor a record third time - the first in Casey to serve back-to-back. At a special council meeting on 10 November, Cr Aziz was elected unopposed to “continue what we started last term”. “I believe tonight we’re not at a crossroads but part-way up a very steep hill.” The nominated challenges included Casey’s population growth, rate capping and job creation. Economic development, digitising Casey, community safety and cultural harmony were among Cr Aziz’s declared objectives for his 2016-17 term. After the meeting he announced two new portfolios for councillors - families, and community harmony. Cr Wayne Smith would take the reins of the new arts, culture and community harmony portfolio. Cr Smith would work closely with the three councillors assigned to community safety, Cr Aziz said. In a pointed rebuff to Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley’s slogan for Casey to embrace diversity, Cr Aziz said: “We don’t like the word diversity because we believe we all part of the human race.” The mayor said there was “a community that has a problem with its young people” and it would be supported by the council. Though an enforcement arm was important, the council wanted to also help engage disaffected youth in programs to connect them
with the community, he said. Cr Aziz dismissed Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott’s invitation to work hand-in-hand with the State Government on the issue. “The State Government has accused us of being racist. That’s why they made the initiative.” Cr Aziz said Casey was a model of harmony, comprising 152 different cultures, 110 religions and more than 100 languages. “Some countries go to war with just two cultures. We’re an example of great harmony.” The council will zero in on creating 3000 jobs from defence industries, including foreign investment from allies Canada, New Zealand, the US and the UK, Cr Aziz said. Casey would also look at economically-strategic sister city relations in China and “further afield”. At the meeting, Cr Aziz told his electoral opponents - in a reference to newly elected colleagues Rex Flannery and Tim Jackson - he bore no grudges. He would seek to work together “no matter what differences challenge us”. The three of them were later appointed on the council’s audit and ethics committee. The return of seven of 11 councillors in the recent council election - the highest in the past three polls - was interpreted by Cr Aziz as an endorsement by the community. Crs Damien Rosario and Susan Serey, both Liberal members, were elected as deputy mayors.

CRANBOURNE South Primary School celebrated Children’s Week last month with a day of crafts and creativity. Teacher Karen Halket said the activities that they planned for Children’s Week worked in with their curriculum as well as wider themes about children in general.
“We have a guided inquiry program we use here that is all about activities or tasks focused around content-based learning and values-based learning,” she said. “The focus of our Children’s Week activities was children: speak, play, discovery, health, and safety.”
The children engaged in activities like putting on plays, nature craft and using computers to produce multimedia presentations. “The children had a great time,” Ms Halket said. “They have been writing recounts about it and how it was a great day.”

Shock-ad awe fails By Cam Lucadou-Wells CASEY’S 300,000 residents haven’t forked out a cent to support a former cop’s family violence shock-ad campaign. A paltry $245 has been donated to former constable Damien Howard’s crowdfunding site this month, with no contributions coming from Casey residents. This is despite Casey leading the state for family violence incidents reported to Victoria Police. A “bewildered� Mr Howard said
he might have to scale back on his $7000 budget, though fund-raising will continue throughout this month. “I wanted to make a really highquality commercial. “I don’t want it just shown on YouTube, I want it on commercial TV and in cinemas.� Maybe, the lean result shows complacency about the issue, or maybe people are just unable to navigate the Indiegogo crowdfunding website, he said. In recent weeks, Mr Howard -
now a film school student - has thus far fruitlessly approached the State Government, the state opposition, Victoria Police and White Ribbon Foundation. As a cop in Cranbourne and Narre Warren, Mr Howard saw hundreds of households wrecked by abusive husbands and dads in Casey. No other issue took up so much police time, he said. “There are a lot of organisations doing great work for victims but I feel it’s not enough - especially
considering the number of people affected. “It’s a wonder the campaign’s not seen everywhere - on bus shelters and in school curriculums.� The crowdfunding campaign ends on 27 November. ON BEHALF of Cancer Council Victoria, I would like to sincerely thank the community of the City of Casey for supporting the recent Cranbourne-Narre Relay For Life. More than 383 relayed on Saturday 5 – Sunday 6 November in 20 teams, walking overnight to show that hope lives in the City of Casey for those experiencing cancer. During the overnight relay, there was laughter, tears and no doubt, a few sore feet. But the strength shown by local Cranbourne and Narre Warren community members was a public display of support for anyone in the City of Casey with a cancer experience. So far, over $50,000 has been raised by Cranbourne-Narre relayers, which will help fund Cancer Council Victoria’s support, prevention and research programs. steady on her feet and “causing trouble” at the shopping centre early on 6 January. Helped by police and paramedics, she was unable to respond to the most basic of questions. Found in her handbag was a container of 70mg of clear liquid believed to be the drug GHB. The judge told her she was lucky the scene happened in a public place so emergency services could be promptly called. “That’s very sad that when you’re asked for your name, you couldn’t even say it. “Even a two-year-old can say their name.”

Police dogs put bite on A MAN who was bitten by police dogs in a Cranbourne backyard at the end of a 55-minute police pursuit through Melbourne’s south-east has pleaded guilty to an early September burglary spree in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Bradley Haverkamp, of Keysborough, had been accused of attempting to ram a marked police vehicle signalling for him to pull over on Princes Highway, Dandenong, just after midnight on 7 September. The court heard on 15 November that the police officer had to accelerate their vehicle to avoid Haverkamp’s stolen white Volvo. Haverkamp pulled a U-turn and was pursued at a “fast rate
of speed” by police Air Wing through Dandenong, Rowville, Lyndhurst and Cranbourne. Police successfully used stop-sticks to bring the fleeing vehicle to a halt in Cranbourne. Haverkamp and a co-accused male passenger jumped fences and tried to hide in backyards as they were pursued by the police Canine Squad and Air Wing. They were found in a Sladen Street backyard. Haverkamp was taken to Dandenong Hospital with dogbite wounds before he was interviewed by police, the court was told. The Volvo had been stolen by an unknown offender from a South Yarra driveway about 11am on 25 July, the court heard. The victim’s dog, which had

been on the front passenger seat at the time, was released from the vehicle at Punt Road during the thief’s escape. The Volvo was later used during break-ins at a Heyfield refrigeration premises, a Traralgon Chinese restaurant and a Footscray car showroom in the week before the pursuit. Haverkamp pleaded guilty to the burglaries and stealing six computer tablets, a Patrol ute laden with tools, $2280 welders, $3000 in Suzuki engine parts, a $5000 car diagnostic unit, a $3000 laptop and a mobile phone. The accused also faced a charge of driving while suspended in February. Haverkamp was remanded for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 6 December.

Cup back on By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Cranbourne Cup has a new running date after the usual meeting date was cancelled in October due to wild weather. Racing Victoria (RV) announced on Tuesday 15 November that the TAB Cranbourne Cup and Procon Developments Apache Cat Classic have been rescheduled to Friday 3 March 2017. The shift of these races from spring to the autumn racing calendar is a temporary shuffling of the schedules, and the races will be run on their regular dates during the 2017 Spring Carnival. There will also be some changes to the races themselves, with the lengths of the races being altered along with the meeting dates. The Cranbourne Cup meeting on 3 March 2017 will be held as an Open Handicap race over 1600m, but will return to the traditional 2025m length in October 2017. The Apache Cat Classic will also be an Open Handicap run over 1200m, and will also return to its customary length of 1000m when it returns to its usual spot during the Spring Carnival. RV Racing Operations manager Paul Bloodworth said he was pleased to be able to offer the Cranbourne Turf Club a chance to host their feature races after the weather ruined their earlier meet. “We are delighted to be able to secure a place in the program this racing season for

THE Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL hosted a Remembrance Day service at the epitaph on High Street Cranbourne on 11 November, with many members of the community gathered to honour those who had fallen in war. The service was led by the Dandenong - Cranbourne RSL sub-branch vice-president Bill Sheppard and attended by City of Casey councillors, Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne, as well as many members of the community and local school groups. Wreaths were laid and silence observed to remember and give thanks to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and reflect on the 98th Anniversary of the end of Wold War I. A better life for Mel By Victoria Stone-Meadows A COUPLE of truck drivers and their mates have done the extraordinary, organising a massive family day to help out their close friend who has fallen ill with cancer for the third time. Stuart Smith and Travis Smith grew up with Tooradin couple Matt and Mel and when they found out a few months ago that Mel had been struck down with cancer for the third time, the guys knew they had to do something. It was then that the “Better Life for Mel” event was born and the guys started organising a family fun day as well as truck, car and bike show and shine to raise a bit of money to help their mate’s family. “A very good friend of ours has got cancer for the third time, and we just found out two months ago,” Stuart said. “Me along with Travis and a couple of other boys decided to run a bit of a fund-raiser to help with medical bills and other things.” Since deciding to put the fund-rais-
er together, the mates have found their skills at event organisation were much better than they first thought. “We had a meeting with Luke and Debbie from the Turf Club, and they gave us a venue and we thought we would run a little truck car and bike show and shine,” Stuart said. “We are having a silent action in the big shed, and so far around $20,000 worth of gear has been donated for auction and raffles.” The event has grown into a full day of family fun with live music, door prize, a celebrity appearance, kid’s activities, market stalls, catering and heaps more. “The majority has been from local business,” Stuart said. “We’ll be running a few raffles during the day, and it’s still in planning but we’ve got prizes like fishing trips and a holiday of five nights at Broadbeach in Queensland. “Shane Crawford will be here drawing the door prize which is a $3000 packing from Focus on Furniture as well as signing few footies on the day.

A DANDENONG magistrate has laid down the law to an 18-year-old car thief, warning him he’s keen to avert a repeat of the fatal car crash in Narre Warren South on 5 November. Adam Scherwinski pleaded guilty to robbery, unlicensed driving and five counts of motor vehicles theft among more than 30 charges at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 15 November. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted young people stealing and driving stolen cars was of high concern in the “local community”. “The worst case scenario is you’re involved in a car accident and someone else is killed or seriously hurt. “It would be devastating on everyone if that were the case.” As an example, Mr Vandersteen referred to the 5 November fatal crash in which an allegedly stolen car filled with six teens flipped. A 17-year-old male passenger died, another was critically injured and the 15-year-old driver was charged with offences including theft, burglary and culpable driving. Mr Vandersteen said a Youth Justice supervision order as well as bail conditions - including a night curfew at a Cranbourne North address - had “done noth-
ing” to quell Scherwinski’s offending. “It’s not working. Where is the line for you? At what point will you pull up?” Among Scherwinski’s offences was a robbery in a residential unit in Dandenong on 10 May. A female knocked on the unit’s door about 5.45am and was let in by one of the two refugee occupants. Scherwinski and an unknown male followed her inside, and demanded the victims’ wallet, phone and car key. They stole the goods after punching the victim, and also stole a laptop from the other victim. Scherwinski was also charged with driving a car stolen from a Berwick home’s driveway on the night of 9 June. It was laden with $1700 of tools, an iPad, CDs and clothing. He also pleaded guilty to multiple shop-stealing and petrol drive-offs in Melbourne’s south east - some after he was bailed on 29 June. He has been in adult custody since being arrested on 10 October. Defence lawyer Peter Sublet said the accused’s behaviour stemmed from illicit drug problems, an attachment disorder and a disadvantaged back-
ground including education only up to Year 6. The “penny had dropped” and Scherwinski was now willing to go to detox and stay out of trouble, Mr Sublet said. “To sentence my client to further time in prison ... is not the correct way to rehabilitate him.” Mr Vandersteen retorted: “The family he kills in that stolen car won’t give two hoots about what you’ve just said. “How do you protect the community when he doesn’t engage himself?” Mr Vandersteen said it was a difficult balance in keeping Scherwinski from the “criminogenic” influence of jail, rehabilitating him and the need to protect the community. In a sentence indication, Mr Vandersteen said the man was facing six months detention with youth parole to start before Christmas. He deferred sentence, and bailed Scherwinski “to see how you go” on a night curfew, a ban from driving and associating with co-accused, daily reporting to police and twice-weekly appointments with Youth Justice. “If he re-offends, the six months is well and truly off the table. “We’re not asking much of you - just staying out of trouble.”

THE Narre Warren North Uniting Church has commenced three new community programs. Stitch and Chat, a disadvantaged toddlers group, and affordable cooking. The disadvantaged toddlers’ group is a self-help support group for parents whose severely disadvantaged children are unable to participate in mainstream pre-school activities. Dr Sanjay Saluja said the centre offered all the services expected at a medical centre including general medicine, women and men’s health, paediatrics, immunisations, skin checks, minor surgery, preventative medicine, travel medicine, mental health, health assessments, work cover, preemployment medicals and liquid nitrogen freezing therapy. “We are a bulk billing practice for all valid Medicare card
holders,” Dr Saluja said. “You can make an appointment by calling us or going on-line at docbook.com.au and walk-in patients will also be accommodated. “MyHealth Fountain Gate is conveniently located inside Westfield Shopping Centre.” The centre offers onsite pathology, through Australian clinical labs, as well as having a dietician on-site. There is also a bulk-billing after hours service available to all MyHealth patients through the National Home Doctor Service - call 13 SICK (7425).
“I have more than 25 years’ experience in running a medical centre, providing service to the community with pathology services, minor surgeries, injury management, pre-employment medicals with a special interest in skin cancer surgery,” Dr Saluja said. MyHealth Medical Centre is at shop 2014a Westfield Fountain Gate. The centre is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm, Saturday 9am to 2pm and Sunday 10am to 2pm. WELCOMING a child into the world changes lives. The perinatal period from pregnancy through to the child’s first birthday will bring smiles, cuddles and fun, but also tears, lost sleep and stress. Even the healthiest person will take time to adjust, and some women will have more difficulty adjusting than others. Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week is 13-19 November and St John of God Berwick Raphael Services is working hard to raise awareness of the illness and of the service it offers to new families which are suffering. Staffed by a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, Raphael Services provides specialised perinatal mental health including psychiatric care to mothers, fathers and families in the perinatal and infancy stages. This includes assessments, individual therapy and group therapy. Raphael Services is available to all members of the community and is free of charge or at minimal cost as part of St John of God Healthcare’s commitment to social outreach. the University of New South Wales and the Director of the Mother and Baby unit at St John of God Burwood Hospital. She shares why she thinks women don’t seek help when they struggle with their emotional health. 1. They think depression only occurs postnatally Many health care professionals don’t use the term ‘postnatal depression’ anymore and instead use ‘perinatal depression.’ This is because women may experience issues with their emotional health well before the baby is born. “The term ‘postnatal depression’ implied that a woman’s emotional health was fine in pregnancy and then suddenly everything went wrong when the baby was born, which is not the case,” said Prof Austin.
“In many cases a woman will start to become unwell in pregnancy and feel worse when the baby comes with the added sleep deprivation and the challenges of caring for a newborn.” It is important for women to begin caring for their emotional health right from the start of pregnancy. 2. They feel they can’t cope on their own The perinatal period can be stressful and many women feel anxious at this time. Any woman who is struggling emotionally should not tough it out on their own. Sharing the burden with family, friends or a trusted health care professional is just as important as going for pregnancy checks. 3. They think they are OK because no one else is concerned A woman may feel that a confidant does not take their concerns seriously. “Don’t give up, trust your gut feeling,” said Prof Austin. 4. ‘A blight on our game’ By Russell Bennett IT’S just not cricket. That’s the sentiment from umpire Dave Webster, who was out in the middle during an incident on Saturday that he describes as the worst behaviour he’d witnessed in a game he’d been involved in. Webster, now 58, has been involved in senior cricket for 45 years and is now the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s (WGCA) umpires' president. He said what started as “a bit of banter” in the WGCA District game between Officer and Cranbourne Meadows on Saturday escalated and quickly got out of hand. Ultimately, one player was reported for shoving an opponent, while another was cited for head-butting. Threatening language and actions are also said to have taken place. “We had to warn a few blokes a couple of times (for inappropriate language) but then one batsman just lost the plot and it wasn’t pleasant. “It was extremely disappointing. “This is how things escalate and it’s just not cricket.” Cranbourne Meadows was batting at the time. “One player - a fielder - was waiting at the crease for this batsman to arrive out in the middle. “He was there for a purpose.” Webster said spot-fires also continued on day two on Sunday. “It was pretty uncomfortable out there, I must admit,” he said. “This sort of behaviour starts right at the top in international cricket, and it’s a disgrace. “This is more than just banter - this sort of talk incites this stuff, and it’s just nasty.

from the association at an upcoming tribunal hearing. Cranbourne Meadows president Ben Warren-Smith opened the batting for the Rebels in the weekend’s game - going on to make 52 in the clash that Officer won on the first innings. He was out in the middle when the incident took place. “The altercation that took place just started with banter,” he said.
“One player waited to greet the incoming batsman that that’s where it all transpired from. “Later in the over, the player walked from slip down to the batsman at the non-striker’s end. “My disappointment is that it got to that. It’s just a game of cricket. “There’s got to be a line with banter. “They’re just words, but they can
carry a bit of weight.” Warren-Smith said it was disappointing from both Officer’s and Cranbourne Meadows’ perspective. He said his player had accepted responsibility for his part in the incident, and the club would let the tribunal hearing take its course. “From our perspective, it was pretty ordinary from both parties,” Webster said. “Something had to be said for the situation to occur, but we’re playing park cricket - not for sheep stations.” He said the language used out in the middle was “pretty ordinary”. “You have to expect a level of banter but the boundaries were pushed, if not crossed,” he said. “It was a blight on our game, and on both clubs.” WGCA president Brett Armitage said the association has “zero tolerance for physical contact and abuse, regardless of provocation”. “It’s like speeding - you either did it, or you didn’t,” he said. “Our association has standard penalties under the Cricket Victoria banner and a very specific code of conduct on our website for everyone to see. “We won’t hesitate to deal with people if they don’t follow the rules. “We have very strict rules - the VCCL member protection act is on our website - and if they’re not followed we have no alternative but to act and deal with those people. “My job is to protect the spirit of the game and to play within it as intended. “We’re custodians of the game and there’s a spirit we need to honour.” Officer president Tim Smith opted not to comment about the weekend’s game.
Cranbourne harnesses the top award for a country club CRANBOURNE is the 2016 Harness Racing Victoria Country Club of the Year. Announced during the Country Clubs section of Harness Racing Victoria’s (HRV’s) annual Gordon Rothacker Medal awards last week at Crown Palladium, Cranbourne’s committee was on hand to accept the gong. “We’ve got a marvellous group of volunteers and a fabulous committee to help us run the club and we’ve also got a very professional CEO in Neil Bainbridge,” Cranbourne president Duncan McPherson said. “We’re lucky we benefit with the multi-use of the venue with two other racing codes.” McPherson said working alongside such passionate people was great fun. “These guys are a very good crew. They’re very professional, great fun, super fellowship and for all of us we just really enjoy it,” he said. Cranbourne was awarded the Club of the Year trophy for its efforts to bolster engagement and participation in the region through a strategic direction. The club’s training centre is also

Warragul’s efforts to engage with local media were driven by Kyle Galley, whose passion for the trots is unwavering. Galley’s perseverance saw thousands of words celebrating the Warragul trots spread throughout eastern Victoria, including publication in the Warragul and Drouin Gazette, Pakenham Gazette, West Gippsland Trader and Latrobe Valley Express, as well as the Melbourne Observer and Harness Racing Weekly. “I’m very proud to be able to accept this award,” Galley said. “It is still a buzz to open the local paper and see my work after many years.”

Stephanie Phillips loves cricket, she has since the age of seven, and it’s fortunate too, because without that passion she wouldn’t have been on Don Jackson Reserve in the first place. A talented junior, she was making her way through the ranks with Buckley Ridges when a freak accident changed her life forever. Steph was at school when it happened. “Two lockers fell over and I got caught between them and one of them sliced open the back of my leg from the knee all the way down to the heel,” she said. “I had 200 stitches in the back of my leg and the doctors told me I would never play cricket again. It was really disappointing because I was in the process of trying out for the state.” Despite her setback, Steph would not be denied, a combination of intense physio and a fierce determination to prove people wrong would become the driving forces behind her journey back to the crease.
After four years away from the game, and two years of indoor cricket, she joined her brothers Ben and James at Carlisle Park last season. But her story - and the hurdles don’t end there. “I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 20 and last year I collapsed on the field,” she said. “I just need to look after myself and keep hydrated, that’s the most important thing. When you’re playing cricket dealing with the heat in the middle of summer is the hardest part. It’s a constant battle with the epilepsy and the injury. I get pain in my knee, and my hip aches, but I love the game and would do anything to be out there playing. I nearly had it taken away so I appreciate every minute in the middle.” Steph gets to appreciate those minutes with her family and friends, with Ben and James joined in the team by dad Kevin, Steph’s partner Ricardo Gonsalvez and Mat Ruprecht, the partner of Steph’s sister Jennifer. Kevin has a broken finger so missed his daughter’s heroics. “Dad’s really annoyed that he wasn’t out there with me but it was still great to do it in front of family and friends,” Steph said. “My Mum (Nicola) was there, my sister (Jennifer) was scoring and there were a couple of ladies in the crowd who are super important to me. I’ve played indoor and outdoor cricket all my life with Sandy Davies and Margie Fuller and they’ve been huge mentors for me. The 26-year-old, who has battled injuries for the last 12-18 months, finally returned to the bowling crease for his beloved Panthers, helping them rattle the Blues and further cement their standings atop the Premier ladder. Pattinson, who has frustratingly stood in the field this season, finally breathed fire, taking 2/14 off his six overs, included the first scalp that kickstarted a stunning batting collapse. He truly looked ominous, and with more game-time under his belt, will be eyeing off a return to the Victorian Bushrangers by season’s end. UK-spinner Callum Parkinson said the return of Pattinson is pleasing for all involved. “It’s just a massive positive for Patto - he just oozed class with his bowling, and to take two wickets was a massive bonus for us,“ he said. “He also took a great slip catch and batted superbly in these circumstances, so it was really pleasing for the lads.” Prahran elected to bat in blustery conditions, and were ready for another monumental score as they nudged their way to 0/35 early in the day. The Panthers were bowling well but there was a feeling that if wickets didn’t start tumbling, the scoreboard would inevitably start ticking over. The Blues then capitulated, losing their last nine wickets for just 95 runs to be bowled out for a lowly 130, as the Panthers stunned a side that only just last week made an astonishing 6/489. The crucial wicket of Evan Gulbis (33), who only last round made a destructive century, was the turning point for the Panthers, who then lost 6/33 as a result. Nanopoulos, in particular, keeps on delivering for the Panthers, as he continued his huge start to the season with both bat and ball. Meanwhile, across the West Gate Bridge, a depleted Casey-South Melbourne took on Geelong in an interesting day of cricket. After electing to bat, the Swans posted 244, as skipper Lachlan Sperling (67) and Dev Pollock (40) made runs. Geelong spinner Brenton McDonald (6/75) was outstanding, ripping the Swans lower order to shreds with the remaining five wickets. When Eagles dare By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 & 2 REVIEW - ROUND 4 (Day 1) IF it wasn’t for the poor start to the day’s play by North Dandenong, they could have walked off Casey Fields feeling a little bit more optimistic against Cranbourne. But a disastrous start to their batting innings saw the Maroons trundled for just 101, as gun duo Steven Spoljaric (3/28) and Matt Chasemore (3/25) ran amok. But the cornerstone of the Maroons' success has been their impressive bowling unit, and the Eagles couldn’t handle the heat early, languishing at 4/28, as Jurgen Andersen (3/19) once again tore the opposition to shreds. Spoljaric (20 not out) and Chasemore (25 not out) rescued their side to a comfortable 4/69 at stumps. At Park Oval, Hallam-Kalora Park skipper Steve Gilmour did not hesitate in electing to bat against Buckley Ridges, although the rain provided a constant threat. The Hawks were able to score 197, competitive, but perhaps 30 or 40 runs short. Gilmour (50) and Corey Booth (22), were strong contributors with the bat after a shaky start. Bucks skipper Steven Mullaney (3/21) continued his electric start to the season with the ball. At day’s end, the Bloodhounds sit at 5/148, 68 runs ahead of the ledger and with one eye clearly looking at outright next week. Division 1 at home took more small steps of improvement, and although they went down by eight shots, challenged Ashburton all the way. CRANBOURNE BOWLS NEW recruit John McKenna nearly saved the day for Cranbourne against fancied top of the ladder side Caulfield Park Alma in Division 3. With Cranbourne well down at the tea break, all players had to lift to have any chance of winning at home. New skip McKenna and his team of David Brown, Gordon Wilson and Michael Scotter were inspirational winning in the end by 12 shots, while the other three rinks managed a great second half comeback performance and after trailing all day, Cranbourne took the lead by one shot with two ends to play, but despite a lot of excitement, finally lost by five shots in the end. McKenna went on to say: “We fought hard all day knowing that we had to make up a number of shots for overall victory, I was proud of my team of Brownie, Flash and Scottie, who kept putting woods in the head all day giving me good opportunities to convert. However it was unfortunate that in the end we lost to a pretty good side by only five shots after a slight glimmer of hope near the end.” Meanwhile at Berwick, the Cranbourne top side and the third side both lost. Despite the loss, Skip Peter Elgar and his teammate Barry Thomas playing third, continue to work well together with another consistent victory performance in a tight game to at least give Cranbourne two points for the day. Holden’s brightest Spark By Ewan Kennedy HOLDEN Spark replaces the company’s previous Barina Spark - and is significantly better thanks to having a considerable amount of Australian input. The new Spark is built on an allnew, stronger platform. Engine size has increased from 1.2 to 1.4 litres; an efficient CVT automatic sits beside it, though there’s also a manual should you want one. The Holden Lang Lang proving ground south-east of Melbourne was used extensively during Spark’s design and testing stages. GM-Holden is keen to point out this facility will remain in operation as a key part of the GM global empire long after Holden’s Australian factories close late next year. Holden Spark comes in two equipment levels, the base model LS which is priced at $13,990 with a five-speed manual gearbox or $15,690 with a CVT automatic. The higher-specced, CVT-only, LT has a recommended retail of $18,990. The LS comes with 14-inch steel wheels, the LT gets 15-inch alloys. Spark LT also has a smart key with push-button starting, cruise control, and a leather wrapped steering wheel. Holden Spark has a sleeker, more stylish appearance than the superseded Barina Spark.

Cute styling of the new Holden Spark isn’t the only thing you notice - it’s a surprisingly competent machine. There’s a bold front grille and relatively narrow A-pillars. The Spark has ‘hidden’ door handles at the top of the rear doors in an attempt to give the appearance of a three-door hatch. New Spark is lower and slightly longer and sits on an extended wheelbase.
It retains the tall stance as that’s necessary to give reasonable interior room in any very small car. The double-stack GM grille works particularly well because of the tall front of the Spark. Boot capacity is always a compromise in cars in this class in order to give reasonable legroom in the back
seat. There’s a luggage volume of 185 litres in the Spark, but it can expand to 985 litres with the 60/40 rear seatbacks folded. The new 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine generates up to 73 kW of power at 6200 rpm and torque of 128 Nm (CVT auto) and 124 (five-speed manual gear-
box), both when revving at a pretty high 4400 rpm. A large central display unit with a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen dominates the centre of the dashboard. It uses Holden’s MyLink system and is compatible with both the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems. These link through a USB cable, to project smartphone displays, including satellite navigation, onto the Spark’s touchscreen. Siri Eyes Free and voice recognition software as well as steering wheel audio controls reduce but don’t eliminate, driver inattention. It’s still vitally important that drivers always have two eyes on the road and pay 100 per cent attention to what’s happening around them. The entry-level Spark LS gets six airbags, an electronic stability program, and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution. To make life even better the convertible is a BMW powered by the most powerful engine in the range, the new 440i unit. Sometimes road testing can be a bit of a chore, it certainly wasn’t last week with the hot Bimmer sitting in the garage just asking to be fired up. And fired up it was, with several trips to the scenic hinterland behind the Coast during the week - to keep us away from the weekend roads crowded with wandering tourists.
In case you haven’t looked at BMWs for a while, the German marketing guys and gals have decided all its sporty models should have an even number in their title so the 4 Series convertible is the replacement for the 3 Series. The ‘4 tag is also given to the BMW coupe and the Grand Coupe. Midway through 2016 BMW refreshed 4 Series model range for the ’17 season, with upgraded petrol engines, sharper pricing and new model designations. While the 420i and 420d variants remain the same, they are joined by new 430i and 440i models, replacing the previous 428i and 435i variants. The long bonnet look is partly due to the 4
Series having an almost upright grille, but also because of a shorter front overhang and longer wheelbase. Joining the headlights to the kidney grille emphasises the width of the 4 Series, as does the wide front track. Strong style lines along the flanks lead to a stubby tail. The vertical slots at the ends of the front bumper aren’t just there for style, they’re there as part of the aerodynamic package. Air is drawn into these slots, passes over the front wheels, and is finally extracted through the boomerang shapes slits in the front guards.
Top down, foot down, riding in the new BMW 440i convertible is great fun.
