Face ripped open By Alana Mitchelson A PREGNANT Pakenham woman who no longer has feeling in the right side of her mouth after a Staffordshire bull terrier allegedly bit her in August is still waiting for the council to seize the dog responsible. The 17-year-old girl was taken to the Dandenong Hospital by ambulance, and her injuries required reconstruction surgery to both lips and more than 40 stitches. The victim’s sister Kiah Bayley said the girl was now “too scared“ to walk past the house in their street where the fully-grown white and brown Staffy lives. Ms Bayley said she and her sister had been patting the dog, which they had known since it was a puppy, on the footpath outside their house at about 3pm on Wednesday 3 August. She said she witnessed the 17-yearold take a step back to show the dog owners her baby bump, when the dog allegedly jumped up and bit her face. “At first she was in shock and I don’t think she realised she had been bitten. There was a lot of blood,” Ms Bayley said. “There was blood on the concrete. I didn’t know what to do and I took off my jumper to put pressure on the wound. “The bite tore open her upper and lower lip. She had flesh from her lips ripped out by the Staffy.” Since the victim was 16 weeks pregnant at the time of the incident, she was unable to take strong pain relief. “When the shock wore off, she was in a lot of pain,“ she said. “She still struggles. The right side of her lips are numb and she’s lost feeling in her mouth. “She has really bad days some-

times. The scar is decent. It’s really affected her confidence as well.” Ms Bayley said the council did not make contact with the family until about two weeks after the incident. “It was really not until we put in a complaint to the Ombudsman in mid-September that council said they would put a team on the case right away,” she said. “We keep emailing about once a week for updates on how the case is going but the last we heard from the council was early October.
“We’ve seen multiple dog attacks be dealt with immediately and we feel like we’ve been ignored. “Meanwhile the dog is still being walked in our street and is left tied up outside shops. “We also know that the dog has killed some of its owner’s other pets.“ In another dog attack Cardinia Shire Council officers were quick to seize a mastiff that attacked a 29-yearold Pakenham man in late October. In this case, it was not considered necessary to seize the dog.“ Ms Tyson said the council had up to 12 months from the date of an alleged incident to undertake a thorough investigation and commence a prosecution where deemed appropriate. The Gazette contacted the owners of the dog but they did not wish to provide comment.

‘Trifecta’ drive was a bad bet

A CHILD has been struck by a car after reportedly attempting to make a quick dash across a busy stretch of road in Pakenham. The 15-year-old was crossing McGregor Road near Pakenham Secondary College when a car collided with her before 9am on
Wednesday 2 November. Police said she was knocked over and sustained minor injuries including facial grazes. She was transferred to the Royal Children’s Hospital. It’s believed the young girl was on her way to school at Pakenham Secondary College when the inci-
dent occurred. Many residents have taken to social media describing times they’ve seen kids “play chicken” when darting across the highway to get to the campus rather than use the pedestrian crossing. In October last year, an eightyear-old student at the nearby Pakenham Consolidated School was hit
by a car while attempting to cross Princes Highway. He was put into an induced coma with serious injuries, and spent a further few weeks in hospital recovering. VicRoads will soon begin work to improve the safety of the McGregor Road and Princes Highway intersection.
POLICE allege an Officer driver was going for a trifecta in Keysborough. They said the 34-year-old driver was detected speeding, drug and drink driving as part of Operation Furlong, about 5.30pm on Monday 31 October. State Highway Patrol central officers pulled over a car after allegedly clocking it travelling at 111km/h in an 80km/h zone on Greens Road. They allege the driver returned a reading of .111 on a breath test and tested positive to ice. Police impounded the man’s vehicle for 30 days and immediately suspended his licence. He is expected to be charged on summons with a range of traffic offences. Operation Furlong was a state-wide road policing operation focussing on drink and drug driving, speed, distraction, fatigue and seatbelts from Friday 28 October to Tuesday 1 November.
Facing armed robbery charge A PAKENHAM man has been remanded to reappear in court next year over two armed robberies. The 18-year-old Pakenham man was arrested by police at a Springvale property on Tuesday 1 November in relation to armed robberies at a service station in Chelsea Heights and a fast food restaurant in Carrum Downs on 25 October. He has been charged with two counts of armed robbery, theft of motor vehicle and possessing ammunition. The man faced court on Wednesday and was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in January 2017. Police from the Southern Metro Regional Crime Team and Box Hill Embona Taskforce carried out the arrest.
Crash stops traffic DRIVERS were forced to divert around a car which crashed into a lamp post outside Pakenham Hills Primary School, in Army Road. The accident happened about 8am on Friday morning and delays were caused as the uninjured driver attempted to restart his wrecked vehicle.

Fashion is the sunny passion By Aneeka Simonis PAKENHAM Gazette Oaks Day brought fun and fashion to punters and fashionistas alike last week. The spring sunshine turned it up for the event, gentling kissing the shoulders of fashion beauties as they lined up for the highly-anticipated Fashions on the Field event. The popular Lady of the Day event turned up some tough competition. Three fashion heats were required to get through all the contestants - but there could only be one winner. The title went to 18-year-old Kiara Manning from Beaconsfield with Chloe Davies in second place and Breanne Beatson in third .
The Mature Lady of the Day win was taken out by Leanora Romensky, while Jillian Chandler came second and Joanne Abrehart came third. Kids put up some stiff competition in the Best Dressed Couple and Best Dressed Gentlemen competitions, with youngsters taking out titles in both categories. Proud dad Gerard Wursthorn took out third placed in the Best Dressed Gentlemen competition with the help of his three-month-old bub, Hamish. “It’s the first award he’s won,” the dad beamed. Michael McAlpine took out first prize, and Tim Schembri came in second. Bright-eyed youngster Harvey Beat-
son also managed to take out one of the titles on the fashion stage. Accompanying his nan, Narelle Fanning, the pair placed second as the Best Dressed Couple. He was very proud to tell the crowd he was dressed by Bardot - and stole hearts as he beamed his toothy smile out to the crowd. Chris Johnson and Nina McMahon came first, while Roslyn Delrayne and Dean Boyle came third. The trackside Oaks marquee was the place to be for the day. A CRANBOURNE man, who was part of an armed burglary of a family home, has been spared jail in an adult prison despite being charged under the state’s toughened home invasion laws. Bill Tang, 19, was one of five teenagers charged over the invasion of a Brighton East home that awoke its occupying husband, wife and children, about 3am on 23 April. The court heard he was out on bail for similar offences at the time of the incident. During the incident, the male resident screamed out and swung his fists as he was beaten by three of the intruders - described as young African males - holding beach umbrella poles.
He was then pelted with rocks by the group, and dragged along as he clung to his BMW X5 as it was stolen from his garage. Tang faced a 25-year maximum jail term at the County Court of Victoria for the ‘home invasion’ offence of entering a premise with intent to steal with co-offenders armed with offensive weapons. The offence had been introduced by the State Government on 31 August. Tang pleaded guilty to the charge as well as recklessly causing injury, stealing a vehicle, dishonestly handling four stolen mobile phones and two stolen computers and committing indictable offences while on bail. In sentencing on 9 November, Judge Phillip Misso said it was
“abundantly clear” that home invaders now faced a “stern” sentence for aggravated burglaries under the new laws. Judge Misso noted he had recently sentenced Tang to 18 months of youth detention for similar offending with the same co-offenders at a Rosanna home last year. He said the Brighton East family had endured a “terrifying episode”, in which the man had fought off armed intruders. The man had received injuries to his shoulder, elbow, hand, knees and feet during the car theft, and he and his family no longer felt safe in their home. “To say their life changed as a result is an understatement,” Judge Misso said. On the other hand, the judge not-
ed the Crown hadn’t alleged Tang entered the home. Judge Misso also factored in a favourable Youth Justice pre-sentence report, Tang’s age, guilty plea, rehabilitation prospects, immature and impressionable personality as well as the “undesirable influences” within adult prison. He said Tang showed “some” remorse and now understood the need to break away from co-offenders. Ethiopian-born Tang had been largely raised by his mother. He was six when his father died. Tang was sentenced to two years and eight months in a youth justice centre, served concurrently with his previous detention. He was disqualified from driving for 18 months.

Letters Street of despair AFTER a recent trip through NSW and Victorian country towns with their well-kept and clean main streets, with obvious pride in their gardens and maintenance of them I could only feel disappointment and a feeling of despair in the Main Street of Cranbourne, which for the most part appears neglected and unclean. As a resident of Cranbourne I often have the occasion to walk up the Main Street and am appalled by the amount of rubbish, such as papers cardboard boxes lying in the gutters and on the footpaths. Clydesdale Square is no better, a place for a sit down to rest now is often dirty and certainly not a welcoming area. Like-wise the rear car-parking areas that are dirty and not maintained. I am reminded of the old adage that one does not have a second chance to make a good first impression. As we are welcoming a great number of new residents into the town, I think our council is failing dismally in regard to High Street, Cranbourne. I BELIEVE the re-election of councillor Rosalie Crestani as a representative for Four Oaks Ward on Casey council for the next four years is a very bad outcome for all ratepayers and residents. A DEFIANT accused man has told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that he couldn’t bring himself “in good conscience� to apologise to police. The man had been so irritated that he had been booked riding his bike on a footpath while supervising his young daughter on her bike that he shunned the police’s offer for a diversion order. Rather than accept diversion - which would clear him of a criminal record - the man initially told the court he was “not guilty� and couldn’t bring himself to write a letter of gratitude to the officer. Faced then with a contested trial, the man back-tracked hours later and apologised for wasting the court’s time. The judge accepted the accused’s change of heart. “All you needed to write was ‘thank you for recommending me and I promise not to do it
again’,� the judge said. “I could have written the letter for you.� A MAN pleading guilty to two $10-petrol drive offs told a Dandenong magistrate that he intended to “make it sweet�. The man told the judge that he’d been low on cash and fuel on both occasions. “At the time I was in a real bad place.� The judge warned the man - with a lengthy but recently quiet criminal record - not to front the courts again any time soon. The man was convicted and fined $200 and ordered to pay $20 restitution to the petrol stations. Just to “make it sweet�. That’s the heart-wrenching advice to young drivers and passengers from a distraught family member mourning Dru Peterson, 17, who was fatally injured in a horrific crash on Narre WarrenCranbourne Road, Narre Warren South, on 5 November. “Definitely think through the consequences - before you act, not after,” Dru’s aunty Heidi Samason said. About 7.30pm, the allegedly stolen silver Kia packed with six teenagers allegedly ran two red lights, clipped another vehicle, hit a power pole, flipped and skidded 100 metres down the road. The car was allegedly stolen during a burglary on 1 November in the south-eastern suburbs. Police believe the same car was involved in theft of alcohol from a shop on the night of the crash. The Narre Warren South 15-year-old boy driving the car has since been charged with 13 offences including theft, burglary and culpable driving. A 15-year-old Hampton Park girl and a 19-year-old man have been released pending summons for motor vehicle theft. Dru’s older brother Josiah said his bereaved Dandenong family had been further hurt by “judging” comments on social media. Some of the unsympathetic comments highlighted the dangers of such joy-riding to other motorists and had no sympathy for Dru nor family members. The family has denied Dru was

A brainwave By Victoria Stone-Meadows GRADE 6 student from St Kevin’s Primary School in Hampton Park Jasnoor Daler has been named the third best computational thinker in Victoria in a recent national competition. Ms Daler competed in the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge that is run by the CSIRO and tests student’s abilities when it comes to this kind of thinking. The CSIRO’s Digital Careers program manager Nicolette Venn said the challenge wasn’t necessarily about thinking like a computer. “The Bebras competition is about computational thinking, not thinking like a computer,” she said. “It’s about applying prob-
lem solving skills and skills we use every day, but don’t always recognise and apply that to sets of logic and patterns, breaking things down and applying an algorithm and applying a set of rules to solve a problem.” The challenge was completed by over 1.3 million students from over 50 countries in 2016 with 30,000 of those being Australian students. Ms Daler competed against 100 students at Monash University in Clayton at the Victorian final; all vying for the top spot. “When I went to Monash University for the Victorian State Final, I had many feelings going through me,” Ms Daler said. “I felt a bit nervous, but mainly I was there to have fun
with my friends, family, and teachers.” Ms Daler is a talented maths student and has shown a lot of promise in the logic and critical thinking areas, but she said she was not expecting to place high in the competition. “When I was awarded 3rd place I was very surprised to hear that. In the end, I was very pleased with myself for I had made a huge achievement.” Ms Daler’s teacher Denise McMaster said the Bebras competition was a great opportunity for Ms Daler to exercise her skills and knowledge. “It was fantastic to see her have the opportunity and her parents are very excited, and she thought it was great,” Ms McMaster said.

Looking forward A BERWICK school has offered visitors the chance to experience blindness at an open school event. Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired invited people to walk from Buchanan Park to the centre with blind students along a dedicated accessibility footpath on 28 October. The participants then wore a blindfold around its sensory garden and playground. Students then rode on the centre’s accessible bike track on scooters and tricycles donated by Bicycle Superstore and City of Casey, and competed against guests in a ‘swish’ table tennis tournament. Insight principal Timothy Hemphill said “sighted visitors” would marvel at the skill of their students. “We believe it’s not about what students can’t do, but what they can, despite challenges and obstacles.”

A whole different class of memories By Victoria Stone-Meadows HAMPTON Park Secondary College is celebrating 30 years of education on Wednesday 16 November with an exhibition of memories from the school. Past and present staff, students and school community members are invited to help dig up the time capsule that has been buried since 1986. There will also be school tours and displays from years gone by to connect the current Hampton Park Secondary with that of bygone eras. Assistant principal Anne Ure said there had been many changes to the school over the years and the college community are excited to explore them. “There have been massive changes in the school over the years,” she said. “From the buildings and student
population to things like state-ofthe-art IT facilities, drone clubs, and 3D printing.” Ms Ure said there had been a strong response from people who had received invitations for the anniversary. “Past students and staff and parents and school councillors have responded, about 130-150 people so far,” she said. “It’s a significant celebration for the college and given that Hampton Park will be celebrating 100 years as a community, a perfect lead in to that.” Those who attend the 30-year anniversary for the school will be able to witness the burying of a new time capsule to be opened in 2036. The anniversary celebrations will run from 5pm to 7pm Wednesday 16 November at the secondary college.

A DOVETON serial drink-driver and disqualified driver is appealing his resultant jail term, arguing he needs to keep in touch with his estranged kids. Corey Anthony Van Loo, 33, pleaded with Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to be spared jail on 7 November - several hours after he was arrested in an unregistered car in Keysborough for his fifth charge of driving unlicensed since March. Van Loo argued that a further jail term would jeopardise relations with his children who are living interstate with his expartner. His lawyer told the court that Van Loo had an alcohol and drug issue, but was at a point in his life that he was “trying to pull his head in”. work as a plasterer. Over the past year, Van Loo had decreased his alcohol consumption, the lawyer argued. This was shown by the accused’s illegal reading of 0.047 in Safety Beach in August following a 0.157 blood-alcohol reading for a drink-driving charge in Doveton in March, the lawyer said. “He hasn’t had a drink for a number of weeks.” Since March, Van Loo was charged with three counts of driving an unregistered car as well as two counts of driving with false plates and two counts of exceeding the legal bloodalcohol limit of 0.00. He was charged with drugdriving with ‘ice’ and cannabis in his system in Dandenong in September. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted Van Loo had been jailed
for three months for traffic offences including drink-driving and disqualified driving in 2013. The accused had not heeded the potential “wake-up” call of being caught by police for unlicensed driving earlier this year, but continued his offending, Ms O’Donnell said. “A period of imprisonment is without question going to happen today,” she said. “He’s a man who’s got a short and significant history of driving offences.” Van Loo was jailed for five months followed by a 12-month therapeutic corrections order. He was disqualified from driving for 30 months. His lawyer indicated Van Loo would seek bail to appeal against the sentence to the County Court the next day.
Police still looking for car POLICE are on the lookout for a 2007 black Honda sedan that was stolen during an aggravated burglary in Berwick about 5.15am on 4 November. Two thieves forced entry into the Hagen Drive home and stole car keys to two vehicles that were parked at the property. Along with the Honda se-
dan, a white Holden Ute was stolen from the house but later recovered after it was dumped on Telford Drive in Berwick. The black Honda sedan was later used in a petrol drive off incident in Clyde Road, Berwick. Along with the cars, the thieves stole credit cards from
the house that were used at a McDonald’s and a Safeway in Endeavour Hills and Doveton. Police investigators are asking anyone who sees the black Honda sedan with registration XWO 179 that is still missing to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 000 333.

Fire Danger Rating signs broadcast the danger a fire would pose, if it were to start on that day - severe, extreme and code red warnings indicate that fires could be unpredictable or uncontrollable.

THIS summer, checking fire danger ratings to understand the daily fire risk is an important way to protect yourself and your family from fire. Fire danger ratings give you information on how dangerous a fire would be if one started. The ratings are based on the weather conditions and other factors, such as how much dry vegetation there is. Hot, dry, windy days are the worst weather conditions for fire. Ratings are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data up to four days in advance, and are declared by fire weather district. The three most important ratings to look out for are severe, extreme and code red, although fires can still be dangerous on days when the ratings are lower. Code red days are the worst conditions for a grassfire or bushfire and means that if a fire was to start, it would be uncontrollable. Most houses are not designed or constructed to withstand code red conditions. Leaving high-risk areas the night before a code red day or early in the day is the safest option. A severe or extreme fire danger rating means that if a fire starts and takes hold, it will be unpredictable and fast-moving. If you live in a highrisk area, and your house is not prepared and you are not able to defend it, leaving early in the day, or the night before, is your safest option. Check fire danger ratings at emergency.vic. gov.au, by downloading the FireReady app or by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667. If you have a hearing or speech impairment, contact the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (VBIL) via the National Relay Service on 1800 555 677.

GEORGIO'S Seafood and Steak Restaurant on the Princes Highway in Beaconsfield was first established in 2007, and now nearly a decade on, the original owner and head chef John Georgio is still at the helm with his team of loyal and hardworking employees. Georgio’s prides itself on the freshest seafood - including Aussie king prawns, the best oysters, fish, scallops, seafood platters - the list goes on. It has the biggest, most tender steaks too, ranging from the
sirloin at 350g ($34.90) to a King Rib Eye at 500g ($42.90), 700g King Rib Eye ($52.90) to the enormous 900g King Rib Eye ($62.90). A favourite is the eye fillet with pepper sauce, though. There is also many pastas, pilaf, salads and chicken dishes to choose from, and all very reasonably priced, in fact most of the pubs in the area charge more for their services! Jack says show’s in the blood By Cam Lucadou-Wells ‘STALWART’ doesn’t do justice to Jack Rae - who has helped organise the Dandenong Show for the past 70 years. Mr Rae, 88, joined the agricultural show society’s committee as an 18-year-old following in the footsteps of his father, George. “There’s quite a bit of show blood in us,” Mr Rae said. “I’ve moved around the show world a bit ... it does seem to get in the system.” The Narre Warren North cattle farmer is a former show president and remains the show’s chief steward. He’s on the committee that spends the best part of a year organising each annual show. Remarkably Mr Rae’s involvement still spans less than half of the show’s 145-year history. Mr Rae said the show format has not changed much but there remains no better entertainment for families. “Why do we still run a show now? It’s an opportunity for people to come now and mingle, but there’s also a value in learning how to look after animals. “Without the shows, people wouldn’t have the same access to things like the animal nursery or the children exhibiting their schoolwork or the equestrian riding. “I see it as a community benefit, I might say. That’s the pleasure of being involved.” Mr Rae can remember times when farmers used to herd their cattle and ride their horses from their pastures to

As kids, he and his brother Bert and sister Thelma drove their cows to Berwick Showgrounds. He recalls that 70 years ago, the Dandenong showgrounds were set in the middle of town, at the current Dan-
denong Market site. The site was home to the stock market and a football ground ringed by a cycle-racing track. During World War II, the show moved to the Berwick showgrounds
while the Australian Army camped at the Dandenong site. After “a fair bit of reluctance”, the show made a permanent move to its more spacious 60-acre base at Greaves Reserve.
Mr Rae said the Greaves family noted pastoralists in Lang Lang and Dandenong - had donated 22 of those acres to the show society in the 1900s. That land was augmented by a donated parcel from the City of Dandenong to form an offer too good to refuse. The original showgrounds were exchanged to become part of the council’s former Clow Street offices. Mr Rae marvels at the foresight of councillors and the Greaves. “How well does Greaves Reserve serve the community now!” The future of the show looks assured to Mr Rae, though Dandenong has long since been over-run by suburbia. Small but growing numbers of new communities are coming through the gates, and the show committee has a healthy injection of young blood. “At every town and city that has an agricultural show, it is recognised as something of value to the community. “There are not many agricultural shows that have had to close. And the shows, in the main, have been going 100-plus years. “It’s about sharing your knowledge - that’s why shows were started.” The Dandenong Show will be held this Saturday and Sunday at the Dandenong Showgrounds, Greaves Reserve, Dandenong. Gates open at 9am on Saturday. Adults $20, pensioner/ student $15, child 6-16 $10, under five free. Family ticket is $50.

Draft looms for Bailey By Nick Creely AFTER toiling away at his South Eastern Football club Beaconsfield, Bailey Morrish was finally given the chance to prove his worth at Stingrays preseason training in late 2015. The left-footed defender hasn’t gone through the conventional pathway of state representation, but a stunning rise late in 2016 has seen him become one of the most tantalising bargains for any AFL club. “It’s been a bit of a mixture of hard work and realising my potential and what I can do - I was pretty unlucky to not get the Vic Country invite, but all you can do is go to TAC level and work as hard as you possibly can,” Morrish said. The 18-year-old Beaconsfield product is an enticing prospect for a club looking for a player with genuine leadership, athleticism and an ability to intercept the ball, and says a certain dashing Hawk is someone he has followed closely across the journey. “I love to run and carry, take intercept marks and use my trusty left foot,” he said. “Isaac Smith is certainly a player
I’ve watched a lot - it’s just his run and carry, his skill and I’d like to take a few things from his game into mine. Morrish had a consistent and exciting season for the Stingrays in 2016, showcasing his impressive distribution of the ball and ability to read the play, and says the TAC Cup was an experience he will always remember. “It was my first full pre-season last year and this was my first year at TAC and I’ve loved every minute of it,” he said. “It was a great experience, I’ve made new life-long friends and learnt new things and it’s just been awesome. This impressive season culminated in another surprise call-up, this time in the Under 18s All-Stars game, in which he impressed with his elite foot skills. But something Morrish loves even more and will treasure for the rest of his life is the prized memories of his junior days, something that reminds him of where he has come from. “On my wall there are three premiership flags for Beaconsfield - Under 14s, 15s and 17s - that’s been some of my biggest highlights so far in the journey,“ he said. “They are days I will never get
back, and I’m really thankful for everyone for their ongoing support.” With the National Draft ticking closer and closer, Morrish is going in with no expectations, knowing all toowell that anything can happen. “All you can do really is just wait and hope for the best really,“ he said. “It’s hard to never really know whether you will get drafted - you look at Tommy Glen last year and he spoke to a lot of AFL clubs, at least a dozen and he had a great year - you just have to hope for the best.” But despite the unknown, Morrish insists he is determined to create his own destiny, no matter where the road leads. “I think I’m 100 per cent ready to go anywhere, I’m pretty independent and I’d love to go on my own path and if I go interstate I’m happy,” he said. “I’m confident that if I am lucky enough to get an AFL game, I will know I have given it my all.” But there are people in the young man’s life that he owes a lot to, in particular his parents and the Dandenong Stingrays. “Nick Cox, the defensive coach at

HAMPTON Park Football Netball Club is on the hunt for a new coach and has little choice but to work with its existing governing body after a request to switch leagues was emphatically denied. Members of the club, including players, raised the possibility of a move from the stronger South East Football Netball League to the lower divisions of Southern Football League at the club’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 25 October. The discussion point was not an agenda item at the AGM, so couldn’t be put to a vote, leaving the club’s executive committee to put forward its case at a meeting with AFL South East General Manager Jeremy Bourke and SEFNL Leagues Manager Liz Triffitt. It was at this initial meeting that the club was told it had missed the deadline date for its request to a move to another league - October 15. It was also told that under no circumstances would AFL South East and the SEFNL release the club from their governance - the only way out for the club after it had missed the initial deadline. This has left the club with two options for 2017 - to either compete in the SEFNL or not
play at all. The club’s 2016 coach Matt Shorey resigned on Monday, the difficulty of luring players to a club that has won just four games from 80 outings since the start of 2012 finally taking its toll. The News understands that the club contacted more than 80 players, including former AFL stars, in a recruiting push that was set to bring new excitement to Robert Booth Reserve. The club is financially secure, turning a $30,000 debt into a $70,000 balance over the last few years. The club has tried to lure players with financial enticements for 2017 but its on-field performance has damaged its brand. The club’s best player, Nathan Allen, has already signed with rival club Narre Warren for next season, while several other players are said to be fed up with the constant shellacking’s and assessing their whereabouts for next year. Recently appointed club president Michael O’Brien said this year’s AGM had certainly opened debate. “That’s why AGMs are there, for people to voice their opinions and to promote healthy debate,” O’Brien said. “Some will choose to leave, but the ones that remain will
earn their success, go through the pain and come through the other side the hard way. We will have a core group of players, supporters and administrators that have the best interests of the club at heart.” O’Brien said the initial decision to discuss the possibility of a move with the league was a hard one, but had opened the door for open discussion and cast fresh light on the future. “We’ve made no secret of the fact that we’re calling out for divisional football, we need it to survive, and we need it for the league to be competitive in all grades,” he said. “All conversations we’ve had with AFL South East and SEFNL would indicate that divisional football will be here in 2018 ... and we need it.” Inside sources at the club have confirmed with the News that the raising of the issue has caused a split within the football club, with some keen to move and others keen to stay put. It’s understood the netball club, a successful piece of the SEFNL puzzle, is against the move. Bourke met with Hampton Park members at a specially convened meeting at the club on Tuesday night to discuss the way forward.

Pair of Bulls set up victory By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION ROUND 4 - REVIEW (DAY 2) A REMARKABLE 272-run partnership between Cardinia batsmen Neil Barfuss and Alex Nooy has headlined another interesting weekend in the Premier division. The ladder is starting to take shape, with Pakenham and Tooradin perched in the top two spots after four rounds, after comfortably defeating their opponents on Saturday. Kooweerup has survived a scare, defeating Merinda Park by 69 runs, despite a terrific knock by Simon Parrott. The top-order batsman made 66, as he threatened to hunt down the 267 runs required for victory. But when John Bright (2/29) skittled the star’s stumps, it all fell apart for the Cobras, who then lost 7/97 en route to 198 all-out. Jess Mathers (2/46), Matthew Davey (2/48) and Mark Cooper (2/14) were amongst the wickets, while Gagandeep Singh (44) and Dylan Cutherbertson (39) played solidly in the middleorder. Kooweerup now face bottom-placed Emerald in what could be a percentage boosting clash, while Merinda Park plays a red-hot Tooradin. Tooradin has crushed Pakenham Upper/ Toomuc by a whopping 154 runs, as the Seagulls continue their exceptional start to the season. After setting the Yabbies an ominous and unrealistic 323 runs for victory, the Seagulls were clinical with the ball, despite a fighting knock from opening batsman Daniel Strahan (88). Apart from Strahan, the Yabbies failed to deliver the bat, with the next highest score being just 21, and were subsequently bowled out for just 168. Russ Lehman (4/24) was the pick of the bowlers for the Seagulls and continues his strong start to the season, while Cal O’Hare (3/33), fresh off his swashbuckling 135 with the bat, was a star. Tooradin tackles Merinda Park away from home this week, while Pakenham Upper/Toomuc hosts Upper Beaconsfield. Pakenham are now atop the Premier ladder, defeating Upper Beaconsfield in a tight and tense affair. Set 258 runs for victory, the Lions were treated to a splendid knock from number-three bat Chris Smith (140), who tore the Maroons bowlers to shreds. Smith’s innings feature 15 boundaries and a solitary six. The next highest score for the Lions was 25 by Chris Savage, in a 105-run partnership between the two. The Lions were able to reach the total with two wickets to spare. Scott Pitcher (1/61) ran in hard all-day and was perhaps a little bit unlucky, but the Maroons were overall disappointing with the ball. Ladder leaders Pakenham face Cardinia in what will be an intriguing clash, while Upper Beaconsfield plays Pakenham Upper/Toomuc. Cardinia has gone berserk off the back of a mammoth 272-run partnership between star duo Neil Barfuss and Alex Nooy. The Bulls, set just 195 for victory over Emerald, found the runs with ease, and then piled on more pain, finishing the day 3/359. Barfuss (147) and Nooy (143no) put on a clinic, with the Bombers bowlers being able to do very little despite some fight from Clinton Marsh (1/37 off 20 overs), who ran in hard all day. Cardinia play ladder-leaders Pakenham this week, while Emerald face a tough ask against Kooweerup. Meanwhile, in District Division, Carlisle Park’s first day dominance was too much to handle for Kalgidhar, as the Vikings cleaned up the top-order, winning by 123 runs. After posting an ominous 350 last week, a quick start was vital for Kalgidhar. Collectively, the top six batsmen in the Kalgidhar batting line-up made just 38 runs in total, as seamers Jesse Fitzgerald (3/19) and James Gilbert (2/30) were virtually unplayable. After the Seagulls belted their way to 338, off the back of a sparkling century by Kane Latham, the Marygoons never really stood a chance, being bowled out for just 152. Chris Brennan (5/24) was the star for the Seagulls. Clyde has powered its way to a crushing victory, defeating Cranbourne Meadows in clinical fashion. The Cougars, after making 6/314 last week, bowled the Rebels out for just 193. Opening bowler Patrick Lawson (3/48) was outstanding with the new ball for the Cougars, picking up the first three wickets of the day. The Cougars then had 21 overs to bowl themselves to an outright victory, but the Rebels dug it out, finishing on 3/57. Officer has narrowly avoided an outright loss to Devon Meadows. After last week’s barnstorming first innings victory, the Panthers sent the Bullants back in, bowling them out for 181 off 50 overs. A classy knock from Ash Smith (93) gave the Bullants a pulse, but it was too little too late. Matthew Hutchinson (3/39) continued his strong start to the season with the ball, while Scott Clark, Ash Adams and Michael Floyd chimed in with a couple of wickets each. With 132 runs and 27 overs left to gain a crucial outright victory, the Meadows were in deep trouble early, sitting 6/63.
The Meadows then went into survival mode, finishing the day on 8/97, still 35 runs short. In the Sub-District Division, Aura Vale has come close to an inspiring victory, going down by 21 runs to Cardinia. After it looked like Cardinia’s first-innings total of 254 would be enough, the Lakers had other ideas and set about hunting the total down. But the Bulls eventually prevailed, bowling out the Lakers for 233 off 73 overs. Trent Wheller (3/67) was a constant force with the ball, while Aaron Brooks (3/34) also bowled strongly. Lang Lang and Nyora split the points on day two, as a water logged pitch and outfield prevented any play from happening. Clyde has comfortably brushed aside Catani by five wickets, chasing down 171 with plenty of overs to spare. The Cougars were in no mood to stick around, with captain Steven Russell (85) and Daniel Walton (55) punishing the Cats bowling attack. Battle hardened Jeep pushes on By Ewan Kennedy JEEP Wrangler is a descendant of the World War II Jeep, which has been referred to as, “the car that won a war”. That versatile little 1941 4WD played a major part in communications and the movement of the men and equipment on all fronts during that horrible period. Jeep has introduced a 75th anniversary version of the Wrangler to celebrate that original military Jeep. Renegade, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee have also been built, but our road test vehicle this week is the Wrangler - the roughest, toughest Jeep of them all. The 75th Anniversary Wrangler has a ‘military-green-and-mud’ look. The mud part of the look is by way of dark bronze wheels, roof rails, grilles, and the foglight and taillight surrounds. Bronze ‘75 Years 1941’ badges mark the occasion. Clever, almost hidden, touches include a tiny black Jeep in profile on the lower-right corner of the inside of the windscreen, and a similar frontal grille-and-headlight in black under the interior mirror. The seats have a debossed (the opposite of embossed) 75th Anniversary logo and are trimmed in a black and vinyl combo. Again there are bronze details.

Rugged off-road running is what the Jeep Wrangler is all about. Overall, the 75th theme works well and grabbed plenty of comments from people who saw it, interestingly, not just from Jeep enthusiasts, but from people who just like something out of the ordinary. Our test Wrangler was powered by a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine. Introduced in 2012, this modern twin-cam unit puts out 209 kW of power, with 347 Nm to torque. Torque comes on strong from just 1800 revs, so provides providing diesel-like grunt that’s perfect for off-road driving. A five-speed automatic transmission is likely to be the biggest seller and though it seems to be cheating in
some ways to drive a tough 4WD with a self-shifter there’s no doubt it’s simpler to drive in the tough on-road conditions that are likely to be the playground of the typical Wrangler. As part of the 75th Anniversary celebrations Jeep took us to the Parachilna area of the Flinders Ranges a few months back. There we played on claypans and sand dunes, as well as traversing rugged off-road sections that may never have felt tyres before. Great fun. But this week we came back to earth, testing the Wrangler on motorways, suburban roads, carparks and suchlike boring conditions.
Jeep Wrangler has become a little more sophisticated over the years, but it still has a rugged feel that gives the impression it really would like to get off-road to show its stuff. Steering is on the vague side with a tendency to wander about when travelling in a straight line. So we put our brains back a few decades to a time when most cars felt like this and let the Jeep do its own thing. Instead of trying to correct every tiny movement you keep your hands light on the wheel and let the vehicle do its own thing - and overall it keeps a straight course. The suspension is relatively rough
and the cabin isn’t the quietest place in which you've ever travelled. We soon grew to love the Jeep’s character and revel in the old fashioned feel. It’s a shame that too few Jeep Wrangler owners don’t get off-road in serious conditions. We highly recommend it, but make sure you get some driver training, and ideally travel in convoy with at least one other vehicle.
