IT was always going to take something pretty special to lure New Zealand training pair Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young away from their Cambridge training base. The two kiwis - who returned home in 2006 after more than a decade in Singapore - had their sights set on moving to Australia, but nothing tickled their fancy. Meanwhile, across the ditch, in October 2014, former Premier of Victoria and Minister for Racing Denis Napthine announced a $4.9 million investment to construct on-course stables at the Cranbourne Training Complex. For Busuttin and Young and the Cranbourne Turf Club - it would prove to be a match made in heaven. Cranbourne unveiled the first stage of the now $6.5 million stable complex - including a refurbished training track - in early August. Busuttin and Young moved in and couldn’t be happier with the facilities at their disposal. “The on-course stables were definitely a lure,” Busuttin said. “We were looking to move to Australia about three or four years ago but found nothing suitable so we stayed put. We spoke to Neil Bainbridge (Cranbourne CEO) and he showed us the plans and we were blown away by how great they were. You just can’t help but be im-

Busuttin says having his horses stabled on track has many advantages. “Our stables are 100-metres from the track, which saves time and saves on transportation costs - which is great for our owners,” he said. “And over the last week alone we’ve had races at Cranbourne, Mornington and Pakenham, and we’ve got Sandown this Saturday, that’s four race meetings within a 40-minute radius. It’s cheaper for our owners and great for our horses, they don’t have to travel for four or five hours to race.” Busuttin and Young were the only Cranbourne-based trainers to gather a win during the Flemington Spring Carnival with exciting three-year-old colt Anaheim. While bragging rights against the Aussies is good, success for all trainers at Cranbourne is the long-term goal. “It’s always good to sledge the Aussies, but we want everyone at the centre to do well,” he said. “People probably don’t realise how tough it is to get a winner at this time of year with trainers like Chris Waller, Gai Waterhouse and the Snowden’s (Paul and Peter) coming down from Sydney. But with facilities like this - we have no excuses.”

She said that chemotherapy and current treatments are very important in the fight against the disease but has seen how helpful other treatments can be when combined with current medicines. “Matthew was keen for people to know that while alternative treatments are not popular, it would be really good

to see a greater emphasis on incorporating alternative treatments with the chemo,” she said. “He found them comforting and helpful when his liver was so damaged nothing could be done.” Ms Start said she plans on making the Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life a regular part of her year calendar. She even plans on dedicating her efforts at next year’s Relay for Life to her late son and putting together a fundraising team dedicated to her son’s memory called Mattitude.

A COURAGEOUS Cranbourne woman has participated in her first Cancer Council Relay for Life just three weeks after her son lost his battle with cancer. Cranbourne man Matthew Start was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when he was 16 years old and his mother Sharon Start knew this disease would lead Matthew to have a higher risk of developing cancer. Thirteen months ago Matthew was diagnosed with stage four metastatic bowel cancer despite years of managing the Crohn’s disease and leading an otherwise normal and fulfilling life. He grew up in Cranbourne and was a self-employed plumber,” mother Sharon Start said. “He did a mature age apprenticeship and only recently qualified as a plumber and started his own business, around the same time we got the diagnosis.” Ms Start said her grieving process started long before her son succumbed to the disease. “It was absolutely devastating and gut-wrenching to hear your son is terminally ill,” she said. “He was fit, healthy, and strong otherwise and didn’t look sick for a long time even though he was terminal. “It was just a nightmare and my grieving commenced then with that diagnosis, even though we hoped he would be one of the lucky ones and prolong his life but along with that there was a certain amount of grieving.” Sadly, Matthew lost his battle with cancer on 19 October this year at the age of 35 after 18 rounds of chemotherapy and international treatments and is survived by his wife Ellyse. Ms Start said the Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life has been invaluable to

Left grief-stricken By Cam Lucadou-Wells PLEASE think of the consequences. That’s the heart-wrenching advice to young drivers and passengers from a distraught family member mourning Dru Peterson, 17, who was fatally injured in a horrific crash on Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, Narre Warren South, on 5 November. “Definitely think through the consequences - before you act, not after,” Dru’s aunty Heidi Samason said. About 7.30pm, the allegedly stolen silver Kia packed with six teenagers allegedly ran two red lights, clipped another vehicle, hit a power pole, flipped and skidded 100 metres down the road. The car was allegedly stolen during a burglary on 1 November in the south-eastern suburbs. Police believe the same car was involved in theft of alcohol from a shop on the night of the crash. The Narre Warren South 15-yearold boy driving the car has since been charged with 13 offences including theft, burglary and culpable driving. A 15-year-old Hampton Park girl and a 19-year-old man have been released pending summons for motor vehicle theft. Dru’s older brother Josiah said his bereaved Dandenong family had been further hurt by “judging” comments on social media. Some of the unsympathetic comments highlighted the dangers of such joy-riding to other motorists and had no sympathy for Dru nor family members. The family has denied Dru was part of the Apex Gang, and had made the costly mistake of getting into the car “at the wrong place, at the wrong time”. Victoria Police has reportedly stated that some of the car’s occupants were known to police and part of the gang. Josiah had known the driver. “I didn’t know (Dru) even knew him. They were never friends,” Josiah said. Josiah said Dru was a fun-loving teen who simply liked to hang with his friends. He hoped that an 18-year-old Dandenong man, who was also airlifted to The Alfred and remains in a critical condition, pulled through. “Just don’t go speeding, run red lights, drive unlicensed in a stolen car ... ” Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan, who is also Narre Warren North MP, said the crash was a “tragic reminder that inexperience and speed can have deadly consequences”.
TWO teenagers and an 18-year-old man from Clyde North have been arrested following a spate of robberies, thefts and assaults across Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The three were arrested and charged with offences including armed robbery, robbery, theft, assault and assault with weapon, about 7pm on Monday 7 November. Police were called to a tobacconist about 5pm - shortly after it was robbed - and followed the trail to Plowman Court in Epping where they arrested the youths. The three were found with a BMW alleged to have been stolen during a car-jacking in Brunswick on Saturday 5 Novemeber and believed to be involved in an armed robbery on Millar Street in Thornbury.

ON the back of a spate of aggravated burglaries in Cranbourne East, police are warning people to make sure their houses are locked at night even when they are home. One of the incidents saw victims wake just after midnight on Wednesday 2 November to find the front door of their Collison Road house wide open. The home owners discovered their car keys and wallets had been stolen from inside the house leading to the thieves stealing a gray Ford ute from the property. The victim’s credit cards were used a number of times before they were cancelled and police located the stolen ute after it had been dumped on 5 November. Another incident occurred about 2am on Thursday 3 November when burglars gained entry to a house on Black Ledge Drive via a laundry door. They stole wallets and car keys from inside the house as well as mobile phones and took a Toyota corolla that was parked in the driveway.
Carjacking bid foiled A 34-YEAR-OLD man has made a quick getaway during an attempted armed carjacking in Cranbourne North last week. The victim was driving along Saint Gwinear Lane about 2pm in a new housing estate between Mountainview Boulevard and Berwick Cranbourne Road when he noticed a car parked on the side of the road. The hatchback began to follow the victim along Saint Gwinear Lane and pulled up beside the victim, and the passenger held up what appeared to be a hand gun. The victim was pressured to stop his car and leave the vehicle with the passenger of the hatchback pulling on the car’s door handle. The victim made a quick getaway from the hatchback and immediately reported the incident to police.
A police officer photographs the car wreckage. “I implore everyone to take extra care and caution on the road as we lead up to Christmas. “Police are doing all they can to reduce this type of behaviour amongst our youth. “My thoughts and prayers go out to Dru Peterson’s family, and to the loved ones of the other children involved during this difficult time.” Inspector John Cormack, of Victoria Police, said: “This crash involves many factors including youth, inexperience, and speed, and it has to stop. “This didn’t need to happen and risks to communities, themselves and other road users, and it’s hurting our kids.”
Stolen car crashed A 17-YEAR-OLD Cranbourne teenager has landed himself in hospital after driving a stolen car into another vehicle at the intersection of Roberts Road and David Avenue in Cranbourne. The smash occurred about 9.30pm on Saturday 5 November when the teenager smashed a stolen 1987 Toyota sedan into a parked car at the intersection. The driver of the stolen car was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries following the crash and police investigations are ongoing.

Battles of an epic life By Cam Lucadou-Wells THIRTY years after his father died, former Casey mayor Rob Wilson decided it was time to immortalise an epic life. In his self-published book To Boort from Lesmahagow, Mr Wilson chronicled his father David’s life growing up on a Scottish dairy farm, serving with the Scottish infantry in World War I and subsequent peace-keeping, and raising a family in trying times in Australia. During the task, the Narre Warren author delved into 150 years of family history. He collected meticulous diary notes of his uncle Jimmy who served in David’s WWI unit, as well as treasured medals, fresh-faced photos and memorabilia from his father’s military service. He said he knew a lot about his vibrant father through an interview in 1976 but felt an urge to write down what was in his head “before it was too late”. This thorough “living history” was complemented by written tributes from David’s other children Val, Rose, Adrian, Ian, Kelvin and Graeme to paint a portrait of a “stranger in a foreign land”. At the book launch on 2 November, Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL president John Wells said biographies like this give people a “sense of who we can be”. If faced with hardships such as war, drought or a Great Depression, how much courage would be still in this country, Mr Wells pondered. “The answer is there is as much as there ever was.” Holt MP Anthony Byrne said such family histories stood as important records of the past for future generations. “I encourage others to follow your example,” he told Mr Wilson. Mr Wilson made the point that his father - perhaps because he was struck by “the rod” as a child and witnessed the so-

David had enlisted underage, as a 17-year-old, in the Royal Lowland Scottish Infantry and became a Lewis gunner - manning a primitive machine gun. Mr Wilson tells of how the Scottish Highlanders, in their kilts, had their legs badly burnt by the corrosive mustard gas unleashed on the battlefields. Fortunately for David, as a lowlander, he wore pants. From uncle Jimmy’s notes, Mr Wilson lists the exotic towns in Egypt, Palestine, France and Belgium where the two brothers served for four years - including a year of peace-keeping. Rarely did their unit settle in a place
for more than a month, often they moved on within a couple of days. Mr Wilson coloured his book with some wartime memories of his father, such as the all too bitter coffee in France and Belgium, the sweetest oranges in Jaffa or the painful use of pliers to ‘soothe’ a toothache. He also researched the efforts of the 52nd Lowland Division in a successful surprise attack on the Ottoman army in Gaza, Palestine, on 1 November 1917 attaching a letter by General Edmund Allenby praising his troops weeks later. “By real hard fighting, determination, and Scottish pluck during two months you have won yourselves a great name,” the general wrote. “By drunkenness and insubordination

you can lose that fine name in hours!!!” The book then follows David’s hardworking life, raising a family with wife Julie in Boort through the Great Depression and World War II. During that war, David became a virtual Sergeant Major who trained Boort’s civilians to defend their town. The street lights were blacked out and street signs taken down - in case of invasion, Mr Wilson writes. After the war, David and Julie moved to Melbourne’s south east where they remained for the rest of their lives. Copies of the book have been presented to Lynne Bradley on behalf of Narre Warren Family History Group as well as Narre Warren Library.

RSL Clubs around Casey and surrounds will be holding memorial services to remember those who lost their lives at war on foreign shores and those that have passed since returning home. Berwick RSL will hold a Remembrance Day service at the High Street memorial in Berwick from 10.40am on 11 November. The DandenongCranbourne RSL will be hosting two services so members of the community from both suburbs will have a time and place to reflect on those fallen. Invader beats jail By Cam Lucadou-Wells A CRANBOURNE man, who was part of an armed burglary of a family home, has been spared jail in an adult prison despite being charged under the state’s toughened home invasion laws. Bill Tang, 19, was one of five teenagers charged over the invasion of a Brighton East home that awoke its occupying husband, wife and children, about 3am on 23 April. The court heard he was out on bail for similar offences at the time of the incident. During the incident, the male resident screamed out and swung his fists as he was beaten by three of the intruders - described as young African males - holding beach umbrella poles.
He was then pelted with rocks by the group, and dragged along as he clung to his BMW X5 as it was stolen from his garage. Tang faced a 25-year maximum jail term at the County Court of Victoria for the ‘home invasion’ offence of entering a premise with intent to steal with co-offenders armed with offensive weapons. The offence had been introduced by the State Government on 31 August. Tang pleaded guilty to the charge as well as recklessly causing injury, stealing a vehicle, dishonestly handling four stolen mobile phones and two stolen computers and committing indictable offences while on bail. In sentencing on 9 November, Judge Phillip Misso said it was
“abundantly clear” that home invaders now faced a “stern” sentence for aggravated burglaries under the new laws. Judge Misso noted he had recently sentenced Tang to 18 months of youth detention for similar offending with the same co-offenders at a Rosanna home last year. He said the Brighton East family had endured a “terrifying episode”, in which the man had fought off armed intruders. Letters Street of despair AFTER a recent trip through NSW and Victorian country towns with their well-kept and clean main streets, with obvious pride in their gardens and maintenance of them I could only feel disappointment and a feeling of despair in the Main Street of Cranbourne, which for the most part appears neglected and unclean. As a resident of Cranbourne I often have the occasion to walk up the Main Street and am appalled by the amount of rubbish, such as papers cardboard boxes lying in the gutters and on the footpaths. Clydesdale Square is no better, a place for a sit down to rest now is often dirty and certainly not a welcoming area. Like-wise the rear car-parking areas that are dirty and not maintained. I am reminded of the old adage that one does not have a second chance to make a good first impression. As we are welcoming a great number of new residents into the town, I think our council is failing dismally in regard to High Street, Cranbourne. A DEFIANT accused man has told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that he couldn’t bring himself “in good conscience� to apologise to police. The man had been so irritated that he had been booked riding his bike on a footpath while supervising his young daughter on her bike that he shunned the police’s offer for a diversion order. Rather than accept diversion - which would clear him of a criminal record - the man initially told the court he was “not guilty� and couldn’t bring himself to write a letter of gratitude to the officer. Faced then with a contested trial, the man back-tracked hours later and apologised for wasting the court’s time. The judge accepted the accused’s change of heart. “All you needed to write was ‘thank you for recommending me and I promise not to do it
again’,� the judge said. “I could have written the letter for you.� A MAN pleading guilty to two $10-petrol drive offs told a Dandenong magistrate that he intended to “make it sweet�. The man told the judge that he’d been low on cash and fuel on both occasions. “At the time I was in a real bad place.� The judge warned the man - with a lengthy but recently quiet criminal record - not to front the courts again any time soon. The man was convicted and fined $200 and ordered to pay $20 restitution to the petrol stations. Just to “make it sweet�. GRADE 6 student from St Kevin’s Primary School in Hampton Park Jasnoor Daler has been named the third best computational thinker in Victoria in a recent national competition. Ms Daler competed in the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge that is run by the CSIRO and tests student’s abilities when it comes to this kind of thinking. The CSIRO’s Digital Careers program manager Nicolette Venn said the challenge wasn’t necessarily about thinking like a computer. “The Bebras competition is about computational thinking, not thinking like a computer,” she said. “It’s about applying problem solving skills and skills we use every day, but don’t always recognise and apply that to sets of logic and patterns, breaking things down and applying an algorithm and applying a set of rules to solve a problem.” The challenge was completed by over 1.3 million students from over 50 countries in 2016 with 30,000 of those being Australian students. Ms Daler competed against 100 students at Monash University in Clayton at the Victorian final; all vying for the top spot. “When I went to Monash University for the Victorian State Final, I had many feelings going through me,” Ms Daler said.

Hampton Park students walk down memory lane By Victoria Stone-Meadows HAMPTON Park Secondary College is celebrating 30 years of education on Wednesday 16 November with an exhibition of memories from the school. Past and present staff, students and school community members are invited to help dig up the time capsule that has been buried since 1986. There will also be school tours
and displays from years gone by to connect the current Hampton Park Secondary with that of bygone eras. Assistant principal Anne Ure said there had been many changes to the school over the years and the college community are excited to explore them. “There have been massive changes in the school over the years,” she said.
“From the buildings and student population to things like state-ofthe-art IT facilities, drone clubs, and 3D printing.” Ms Ure said there had been a strong response from people who had received invitations for the anniversary. “Past students and staff and parents and school councillors have responded, about 130-150 people so far,” she said.
“It’s a significant celebration for the college and given that Hampton Park will be celebrating 100 years as a community, a perfect lead in to that.” Those who attend the 30-year anniversary for the school will be able to witness the burying of a new time capsule to be opened in 2036. The anniversary celebrations will run from 5pm to 7pm Wednesday 16 November at the secondary college.

Festival was a huge hit By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE first ever Casey Food and Wine Festival was held over the weekend of 5 November with visitors enjoying all the local produce and talent on display. City of Casey Group Manager Active Communities James Rouse said about 500 people attended the festival that was held at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. “Visitors enjoyed the opportunity to taste beer, cider, wine and local produce while listening to the live music in the fantastic surrounds of the Old Cheese Factory,” Mr Rouse said. “Locally-made salami, chutneys, jams, cakes, desserts, sauces and spices were all popular purchases.” While the festival had local and state-wide produce, there was also food and drink workshops and demonstrations as well as live music and entertainment. Funds grow for Relay for Life By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life Cancer Fundraiser was held over the weekend with the teams taking to the athletic track at Casey Fields. Cancer for Life Community Liason for Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life, Anthony Erdely, said it was a great weekend and everyone had a great time. “It was an incredible two days,” he said.
“Our committee was amazing during the lead-up to the event and given the weather, the way they supported each other was incredible.” The Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life committee has a fundraising goal of $105,000, and while they are still counting and banking the donations from the relay, they are confident they will make their goal. “We are still banking but we are already very close,” Mr Erdley said.
“Fingers are crossed but you never know.” Roughly 350 people attended the Relay for Life at the athletics track and Mr Erdley said everyone really rallied around the cause. “A lot of the activities held over the weekend were well represented, especially on Sunday morning, when the sun came out everyone really got around it and it was great way to finish a great two days.”

A CHARITABLE and supportive family wasn’t enough to prevent Luke Ryan Krause from descending into ice-fuelled crime and homelessness, a court has heard. The 26-year-old from Pakenham was on bail when he refused a police direction to pull over in his unregistered Lancer on Stephensons Road, Clayton, on 26 October. Krause shook his head at the gesturing officer and sped off at 90 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Princes Highway. Two days later, he was found slumped unconscious behind the car’s steering wheel in Cranbourne West by police about 10.15am. Inside the car was found 14.2 grams of ice, five grams of cannabis, five Viagra tablets, two sets of digital scales and other drug paraphernalia as well as a silver folding knife. Prosecutor Senior Constable Olivia Wood told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 7 November that a suspectedly stolen laptop was seized from the boot of the car. All keylocks to car doors

CRANBOURNE South will be one of seven locations in the Flinders Electorate where a new strain of a virus to control the wild rabbit population will be released. The new rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus 1 K5 (RHDV1 K5) will help curb the spread of wild European rabbits in the area that are resistant to existing RHDV strains. A spokesperson from the Invasive Animals Co-operative Research Centre said the new variant of the virus has been developed specifically for cooler regions such as southern Victoria. “RHDV1 K5 was selected because it can overcome another virus some rabbits have which protects them from the current strain of RHDV,” the spokesperson said. “Through our project evaluation, funded through the Invasive Animals CRC we found that RHDV1 K5 should work better in the cool-wet regions of Australia where the current variant has not been so successful.” While the new strain of

Krause was also charged with breaking into a construction site around a residential unit in Sandringham on 7 October and possessing nine packs of prescription medication at a Carlton student accommodation building on 8 September. “The penny had dropped for him” while in remand custody for the past 10 days, detoxing from two years of ice and cannabis use, according to his lawyer. Krause had previously worked in commercial kitchens, including at Canadian ski resorts, the court heard. His ice use began as pain relief and an energy boost after suffering a severe knee dislocation and ligament damage in 2014. The lawyer told the court that Krause’s well-connected parents - who ran a Pakenham food truck for homeless peoplewere confronted by their son’s plight. They were willing to have
Krause stay with them, but he’d slept at friends’ homes because he felt embarrassed, the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Krause’s chances of re-offending were reduced by “protective factors” such as his youth, lack of criminal history and supportive parents. There was a clear link between Krause’s poor mental health, drug use and homelessness, Mr Vandersteen said. “You’re contributing to all that by not going home. “At the moment you’re showing more loyalty to drug users than to your family and yourself.” Krause was put on a 12-month supervised community corrections order with drug and mental health treatment. “It’s worth putting more resources into him now to cut (the offending) off,” Mr Vandersteen said. “I’m not naive enough to think you’ll walk out and not relapse and not re-offend. “It takes a lot of strength. It’s so important you stay at home and listen to your parents.” Krause was also disqualified from driving for six months.

European Rabbits are said to cause an estimated $206 million in lost national production each year. the virus can be passed easily between rabbits, the Invasive Animals CRC has confirmed it is not a danger to any other animals or pets. “The virus is spread by either direct contact or by insect vectors, in particular bushflies and blowflies.” “Once the rabbits contract RHDV, they suffer liver failure followed by rapid multiple organ failure and death. “RHDV1 K5 only affects the European rabbit and the disease cannot be caused in any other animal.” According to the Federal
Government’s ‘PestSmart Connect’ website, European rabbits have put 304 Australian threatened species under stress through food competition and land degradation. RHDV1 K5 is part of a Federal Government commitment of $1.2 million to assist into research and development of rabbit controls. Members of the community are encouraged to share sightings of feral pest animals to assist research and development of controls through services such as the RabbitScan mobile app or through www.feralscan.org.au

Jack says show’s in the blood By Cam Lucadou-Wells ‘STALWART’ doesn’t do justice to Jack Rae - who has helped organise the Dandenong Show for the past 70 years. Mr Rae, 88, joined the agricultural show society’s committee as an 18-year-old following in the footsteps of his father, George. “There’s quite a bit of show blood in us,” Mr Rae said. “I’ve moved around the show world a bit ... it does seem to get in the system.” The Narre Warren North cattle farmer is a former show president and remains the show’s chief steward. He’s on the committee that spends the best part of a year organising each annual show. Remarkably Mr Rae’s involvement still spans less than half of the show’s 145-year history. Mr Rae said the show format has not changed much but there remains no better entertainment for families. “Why do we still run a show now? It’s an opportunity for people to come now and mingle, but there’s also a value in learning how to look after animals. “Without the shows, people wouldn’t have the same access to things like the animal nursery or the children exhibiting their schoolwork or the equestrian riding. “I see it as a community benefit, I might say. That’s the pleasure of being involved.” Mr Rae can remember times when farmers used to herd their cattle and ride their horses from their pastures to

As kids, he and his brother Bert and sister Thelma drove their cows to Berwick Showgrounds. He recalls that 70 years ago, the Dandenong showgrounds were set in the middle of town, at the current Dan-
denong Market site. The site was home to the stock market and a football ground ringed by a cycle-racing track. During World War II, the show moved to the Berwick showgrounds
while the Australian Army camped at the Dandenong site. After “a fair bit of reluctance”, the show made a permanent move to its more spacious 60-acre base at Greaves Reserve.
Mr Rae said the Greaves family noted pastoralists in Lang Lang and Dandenong - had donated 22 of those acres to the show society in the 1900s. That land was augmented by a donated parcel from the City of Dandenong to form an offer too good to refuse. The original showgrounds were exchanged to become part of the council’s former Clow Street offices. Mr Rae marvels at the foresight of councillors and the Greaves. “How well does Greaves Reserve serve the community now!” The future of the show looks assured to Mr Rae, though Dandenong has long since been over-run by suburbia. Small but growing numbers of new communities are coming through the gates, and the show committee has a healthy injection of young blood. “At every town and city that has an agricultural show, it is recognised as something of value to the community. “There are not many agricultural shows that have had to close. And the shows, in the main, have been going 100-plus years. “It’s about sharing your knowledge - that’s why shows were started.” The Dandenong Show will be held this Saturday and Sunday at the Dandenong Showgrounds, Greaves Reserve, Dandenong. Gates open at 9am on Saturday. Adults $20, pensioner/ student $15, child 6-16 $10, under five free. Family ticket is $50.

Stitch up a course THE Narre Warren North Uniting Church has commenced three new community programs. Stitch and Chat, a disadvantaged toddlers group, and affordable cooking. Stitch and Chat is a weekly practical workshop for sewing crafts - knitting, embroidery, quilting, crochet - led by a guest facilitator. The disadvantaged toddlers’ group is a self-help support group for parents whose severely disadvantaged children are unable to participate in mainstream pre-school activities.
It is particularly aimed at children suffering from conditions that require 24-hour supervision. The affordable healthy cooking class teaches participants to prepare healthy home cooked meals. Hampton Park's missed deadline By David Nagel HAMPTON Park Football Netball Club is on the hunt for a new coach and has little choice but to work with its existing governing body after a request to switch leagues was emphatically denied. Members of the club, including players, raised the possibility of a move from the stronger South East Football Netball League to the lower divisions of Southern Football League at the club’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 25 October. The discussion point was not an agenda item at the AGM, so couldn’t be put to a vote, leaving the club’s executive committee to put forward its case at a meeting with AFL South East General Manager Jeremy Bourke and SEFNL Leagues Manager Liz Triffitt. It was at this initial meeting that the club was told it had missed the deadline date for its request to a move to another league - October 15. It was also told that under no circumstances would AFL South East and the SEFNL release the club from their governance - the only way out for the club after it had missed the initial deadline. This has left the club with two options for 2017 - to either compete in the
SEFNL or not play at all. The club’s 2016 coach Matt Shorey resigned on Monday, the difficulty of luring players to a club that has won just four games from 80 outings since the start of 2012 finally taking its toll. The News understands that the club contacted more than 80 players, including former AFL stars, in a recruiting push that was set to bring new excitement to Robert Booth Reserve. The club is financially secure, turning a $30,000 debt into a $70,000 balance over the last few years. The club has tried to lure players with financial enticements for 2017 but its on-field performance has damaged its brand. The club’s best player, Nathan Allen, has already signed with rival club Narre Warren for next season, while several other players are said to be fed up with the constant shellacking’s and assessing their whereabouts for next year. Recently appointed club president Michael O’Brien said this year’s AGM had certainly opened debate. “That’s why AGMs are there, for people to voice their opinions and to promote healthy debate,” O’Brien said. “Some will choose to leave, but the ones that remain will earn their success,
go through the pain and come through the other side the hard way. We will have a core group of players, supporters and administrators that have the best interests of the club at heart.” O’Brien said the initial decision to discuss the possibility of a move with the league was a hard one, but had opened the door for open discussion and cast fresh light on the future. “We’ve made no secret of the fact that we’re calling out for divisional football, we need it to survive, and we need it for the league to be competitive in all grades,” he said. “All conversations we’ve had with AFL South East and SEFNL would indicate that divisional football will be here in 2018 ... and we need it.” Inside sources at the club have confirmed with the News that the raising of the issue has caused a split within the football club, with some keen to move and others keen to stay put. It’s understood the netball club, a successful piece of the SEFNL puzzle, is against the move. Bourke met with Hampton Park members at a specially convened meeting at the club on Tuesday night to discuss the way forward.

Jurgen’s nine-wicket haul is set to go down in history By Nick Creely SATURDAY 5 November is going to be a day that the North Dandenong Cricket Club is never going to forget. But it will be a day that Narre Warren will never want to re-live. Amidst some spectacular results in an unforgettable round of DDCA Turf 1 action, Jurgen Andersen had a day out that almost all cricket tragics can only dream about. The 24-year-old North Dandenong skipper bowled one of the great spells, capturing an astonishing 9/79 in his side’s crushing victory over the Magpies at Lois Twohig Reserve. The nine-wicket haul is the second best bowling performance in Turf 1 history, and Andersen told the News he is honoured to be part of DDCA history. “It’s pretty special to become part of history in the DDCA - it’s obviously such a rich competition and it’s really cool,” he said. “It’s definitely in the top five of all time - but it’s tough to say really. “Bowling figures-wise it’s obviously my best performance, so I guess it is the best I’ve ever bowled. “It was all pretty surreal to be honest - I didn’t expect it, I honestly thought someone else was going to start taking wickets.” Andersen took the first nine wickets of the innings, including some crucial scalps that helped his side crush the Magpies, but a freakish bit of fielding meant the perfect ten was just out of reach.
“My best wicket was probably just before tea when they were 3/100, and I bowled a short one and he gloved it through to the keeper - it was a really important wicket because they were just starting to build a really good partnership," he explained. “Michael De Kauwe, our off-spinner took the last wicket - the guy at cover took a one-handed diving catch actually, and the team was naturally giving him a bit of stick but at least we got the win. “But it was a cool experience, and everyone else chipped in with fielding and intensity so it was a great team effort.” The talented all-rounder, who has played cricket all over the globe, heaped praise on his side and says the environment the club is building should see them some sustained success. “We’ve got a new president this year, some new captains, both in the firsts and seconds, and a whole new structure to the club itself, and we are building a really good family culture where everyone is equal,” he said. “We have some great depth - we have 65 people at least coming to selection this Thursday to try and get into five teams, so it shows we are heading into the right direction. “A lot of credit needs to go to the new president and the board.” It’s been a stunning return to the club this season for Andersen, who just last Wednesday night starred in his sides Twenty20 victory over Narre

But he is wary of one man in particular, Eagles champion Steven Spoljaric. “He is just a machine, a great player and there is a reason he wins the Wookey Medal that many times,” he said. “He is an important scalp.”

PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 6 (Day 2) SATURDAY was a day of missed opportunity for CaseySouth Melbourne. The Swans are arguably one of the most improved sides in the Premier competition, and after grinding their way to a possible match-winning firstinnings total of 252, the optimism and confidence was at an all-time high. It seemed the Swans had every reason to be confident, starting brilliantly in their bowling defence on Saturday, with Leigh Diston taking the early wicket of Ben Rowles for a duck. The Camberwell Magpies just couldn’t get bat to ball early in the day, as Diston, spearhead Nathan Lambden and Brendan Rose bowled with fierce intensity and pace. But it was a piece of inspired captaincy by Lachlan Sperling just before lunch that had the Swans in the box seat. The first gamer, former Cranbourne spinner Cameron Dinger, just two overs before lunch, strode to the wicket with his knees obviously shaking. On-strike was the Magpies’ captain and most prolific run machine, Thomas Russ, who had swiftly put together 24 classy runs. But what happened was something to marvel at. Dinger let go of his first delivery, a slow half-tracker that

But Glen Parker (30no) started to find the middle of the bat, and with that, the Swans let go of a perfect opportunity to cement their standing inside the top eight. Leigh Diston (2/67) was the pick of the bowlers, while Dylan Hadfield (2/44), Brendan Rose (1/50) and Cameron Dinger (1/52) were all among the wickets. Dinger, in particular, showed he belongs at the first XI level, and was clever with his flight and variations of pace. DDCA TURF 1 & 2 REVIEW - ROUND 3 (Day 2) CRANBOURNE has followed on from its day one dominance, crushing Dandenong West to the tune of 169 runs in their clash at Greaves Reserve. The reigning premiers were destructive, brutalising the Bulls with the bat and out-classing them with the ball. After the Eagles posted a whopping 7/343 last week, off the back of a mammoth century by skipper Steven Spoljaric, it was always going to be a tough ask for the Bulls to chase down the total against the champs. The Eagles spread the load with the ball, with Tim Fathers taking three, skipper Spoljaric, Josh Dinger and Nivin Sathyajith taking two and Cameron Kelly taking one. It was truly a thrilling contest at Alex Nelson Reserve between Springvale South and Mordialloc, as the Bloods survived a late charge by the Bloodhounds to win by just 11 runs. With 227 runs to win, it was a horror start for the Bloodhounds, who were sitting at a woeful 6/49, off the back of some wonderful new ball bowling by Rajith Priyan (4/47) and Tim Ford (3/31). With the prospect of a humiliating defeat, the Bloodhounds dug deep, producing a stunning 121 run partnership through Chathura Athukorala
(76) and Nick Connellan (48). The Bloods charged in, and despite Mordialloc continuing to fight, they eventually ended the game with Tim Ford rattling the stumps of Dylan Campbell. Reedy Reserve was treated to a spectacular contest, with a rare tie between Buckley Ridges and Heinz-Southern Districts. After the Bucks could only muster up 122 last weekend, the Cobras would have walked into the ground on Saturday with supreme confidence. A terrific innings by Brodie Yapp (44) rose hopes of a victory, before Bucks skipper Steven Mullaney (5/24) shredded the tail. With the scores level and one wicket in hand, Paul Stockdale faced up to the red-hot Mullaney, knowing that one run would give them an inspiring victory. But to shock and dismay, Mullaney rattled the stumps, and in the process, saw the game end in a tie. A remarkable nine-wicket haul to North Dandenong skipper Jurgen Andersen has seen his side crush Narre Warren by 134 runs. Andersen took 9/79, including the first nine wickets, as the Magpies capitulated, being bowled out for just 164, despite a brilliant 83 by Janaka Liyanabadalge. Dingley has spectacularly come from behind to claim a gritty win against Parkfield.
After being set 175 to win, the Dingoes got off to a horrible start, and were languishing at 7/99; still 76 runs shy of victory. But a gritty innings by Dingoes skipper Travis Sawers (42) kept them in the game, before Mark Fitch (28) and Jasenthuliyana Chathuranga (26) saw the Dingoes home. Hemantha Alles (4/50) was the star for the Bears, while Travis D’Souza (2/24) provided valuable support in the middleovers. A sparkling century by Jordan Hammond has seen Hallam Kalora Park crush Berwick by four wickets. After the Bears made a disappointing 137 last weekend, the Hawks were hell-bent on sending a statement to the competition, and easily surpassed the Bears and ended on 6/228 at stumps. Hammond (100no) was ably supported by Leigh Booth (39) and skipper Steven Gilmour (29no). TURF 2 BEACONSFIELD has dominated a disappointing Coomoora, winning their clash by eight wickets. After Coomoora posted an underwhelming 145 last week, the Tigers were clinical, reaching 4/233 at stumps. Jamie Hall (63) and Brendan Johnson (54) posted half-centuries, while Matt Golding (35) was also among the runs.

Pair of Bulls set up victory By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION ROUND 4 - REVIEW (DAY 2) A REMARKABLE 272-run partnership between Cardinia batsmen Neil Barfuss and Alex Nooy has headlined another interesting weekend in the Premier division. The ladder is starting to take shape, with Pakenham and Tooradin perched in the top two spots after four rounds, after comfortably defeating their opponents on Saturday. Kooweerup has survived a scare, defeating Merinda Park by 69 runs, despite a terrific knock by Simon Parrott. The top-order batsman made 66, as he threatened to hunt down the 267 runs required for victory. But when John Bright (2/29) skittled the star’s stumps, it all fell apart for the Cobras, who then lost 7/97 en route to 198 all-out. Jess Mathers (2/46), Matthew Davey (2/48) and Mark Cooper (2/14) were amongst the wickets, while Gagandeep Singh (44) and Dylan Cutherbertson (39) played solidly in the middleorder. Kooweerup now face bottom-placed Emerald in what could be a percentage boosting clash, while Merinda Park plays a red-hot Tooradin. Tooradin has crushed Pakenham Upper/ Toomuc by a whopping 154 runs, as the Seagulls continue their exceptional start to the season. After setting the Yabbies an ominous and unrealistic 323 runs for victory, the Seagulls were clinical with the ball, despite a fighting knock from opening batsman Daniel Strahan (88). The Lions were able to reach the total with two wickets to spare. After posting an ominous 350 last week, a quick start was vital for Kalgidhar. Collectively, the top six batsmen in the Kalgidhar batting line-up made just 38 runs in total, as seamers Jesse Fitzgerald (3/19) and James Gilbert (2/30) were virtually unplayable. After the Seagulls belted their way to 338, off the back of a sparkling century by Kane Latham, the Marygoons never really stood a chance, being bowled out for just 152. Chris Brennan (5/24) was the star for the Seagulls. Clyde has powered its way to a crushing victory, defeating Cranbourne Meadows in clinical fashion. The Cougars, after making 6/314 last week, bowled the Rebels out for just 193. Opening bowler Patrick Lawson (3/48) was outstanding with the new ball for the Cougars, picking up the first three wickets of the day. The Cougars then had 21 overs to bowl themselves to an outright victory, but the Rebels dug it out, finishing on 3/57. Officer has narrowly avoided an outright loss to Devon Meadows. After last week’s barnstorming first innings victory, the Panthers sent the Bullants back in, bowling them out for 181 off 50 overs. A classy knock from Ash Smith (93) gave the Bullants a pulse, but it was too little too late. Matthew Hutchinson (3/39) continued his strong start to the season with the ball, while Scott Clark, Ash Adams and Michael Floyd chimed in with a couple of wickets each. With 132 runs and 27 overs left to gain a crucial outright victory, the Meadows were in deep trouble early, sitting 6/63.
The Meadows then went into survival mode, finishing the day on 8/97, still 35 runs short. In the Sub-District Division, Aura Vale has come close to an inspiring victory, going down by 21 runs to Cardinia. After it looked like Cardinia’s first-innings total of 254 would be enough, the Lakers had other ideas and set about hunting the total down. But the Bulls eventually prevailed, bowling out the Lakers for 233 off 73 overs. Trent Wheller (3/67) was a constant force with the ball, while Aaron Brooks (3/34) also bowled strongly. Lang Lang and Nyora split the points on day two, as a water logged pitch and outfield prevented any play from happening. Clyde has comfortably brushed aside Catani by five wickets, chasing down 171 with plenty of overs to spare. The Cougars were in no mood to stick around, with captain Steven Russell (85) and Daniel Walton (55) punishing the Cats bowling attack. Dustin Peebles (2/48) charged in all-day, while Joshua Miller (2/34) could hold his head high. Pakenham have defeated Gembrook in a thrilling and engrossing clash by just 8 runs. After the Lions were bowled out for 187 last week, the Brookers got off to a solid start through opening batsman Darcy Williams (16) and Jeremy Everett (33), who put on 52 for the first wicket. Racing is red-hot ZAMBORA Brockie will begin his quest for the world’s richest greyhound race in red-hot form after a stunning all-the-way victory in the Group 2 $50,000 Shootout at Sandown Park on Thursday. Zambora Brockie claimed Australia’s speed championship with a dazzling all-of-the-way win in one of the most eagerly anticipated Shootouts in the 16-year history of the race. Zambora Brockie was backed into favouritism and didn’t disappoint his legion of fans, jumping brilliantly from box 5 to narrowly cross Outside Pass at the first turn and was never headed, running a stunning 29.167 seconds. Outside Pass ran a gallant second with Dundee Osprey and Worm Burner rounding out the four dog event. The Shootout was the final hit out for Zambora Brockie ahead of Friday night’s TAB Melbourne Cup heats. It was the 27th win of his career and the $50,000 first prize catapulted his career earnings to $419,133 - a figure he will double with a win in the TAB Melbourne Cup final on Friday 18 November. “I know I’ve got him on target, but to win the Melbourne Cup - that’s a whole other story,” said trainer Anthony Azzopardi. “You’ve got to win a heat to get

Such criticisms riled the affable Azzopardi, but he was confident his charge was close to his best after a strong win on a slow track last week. “Things don’t get to me at all really but I was getting a little bit upset with people bagging the dog,” he said. “He had a little fibula injury; it’s a tricky injury that just took a little bit of time to get him right. I knew in my heart that when he came home in 10.59 on a slow track last week that he was getting back to his best. I was telling all the people at home, that they’d have to run pretty quick to get him.” “I always have confidence with him because he’s such a great dog. He is a champion no question and he goes onto a Shootout honour roll full of champions and great stud dogs. I’m really proud of him.” The winner of each heat of this Friday’s Melbourne Cup will progress to the $600,000 group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup final - the world’s richest greyhound race - on Friday 18 November.
Wingless Sprints at Nyora Raceway THE wait is finally over as trophies and championship points go on the line at Nyora Raceway this Saturday night. Following on from its successful Camp Quality Charity Day, Nyora will play host to the highly entertaining Wingless Sprints in Round 1 of the Eastern Challenge. The action doesn’t stop there however, with great support coming from the Junior Standard Saloon Gippsland Series and the Dave Maslen Memorial for Division 2 Hot Rods. The V6 Holden-powered Wingless Sprints continue to be popular among competitors in Gippsland, with a number of new drivers joining the class this season. They join the likes of Nyora vice-president Wayne Hurford who will compete on his home track. Hurford, from Bass, is very much in contention to take a win to kick-start his season. The well-known Morwell father and son team of Peter and Wayne Logue appear the most difficult for Hurford to defeat, with years of experience at Nyora and in openwheel racing. Throw in Leongatha’s Dayn Bentvelzen, Inverloch’s Travis Bergmeier, Clyde’s Ebony Hobson and other racers from the local area like Chris Skilton, Te-Arni Perkins and Owen Bulman and it makes for a great night of racing. Junior Sedan racing this meeting is of the Standard Saloon variety, where depending on age restrictions the kids can run six or eight cylinder machines. Nyora member Bailey Perkins is fresh off a last-start victory at Rosedale Speedway and will lead a field that includes Jack Yeomans and Kasey Ingram as his main challengers. Stan’s a true champion CRANBOURNE BOWLS WITH no Pennant bowls played this week due to the Victorian Open Championships being held at Shepparton, it gave the club the opportunity to reflect on one of the club’s greatest players and committeemen. Stan Burnett was an integral part of the club when he became a Stan Burnett - a true legend of the member back in 1963. Cranbourne Bowls In fact, Stan helped Club. raise money to commence building the original club back then, and with fellow member Stan Hutchison, erected the original ceiling. Stan then went on to provide labour and materials for the second green and many other improvements around the club that he has assisted with. Honoured as a life member back in the year 2000, there can be no doubt that Stan Burnett is possibly the greatest bowler that has ever played the game at Cranbourne. His list of success is a mile long. At club level Stan has been club champion four times and runner-up 10 times. He has also been Pairs Champion twice and has been a member of successful premiership sides and many other awards. At association level, Stan has been Singles Champion four times as well as winning a pairs title. He has been Fours Champion and runner-up in the champion of champions three times. At state level, Stan has been runner-up in the pairs and fours championships. Stan has served as club secretary, president, club delegate, member of the selection panel, umpire, coach, and on tournament and social committees many times over. Stan has also been president of the West Gippsland Bowling Association and at state level has served as chairman of the umpires committee for more than 25 years. The Cranbourne Bowling Club acknowledges Stan Burnett as one of its greatest members and thanks him for his many years of service and hopes that he will continue to be a member for many years to come.

BERWICK BOWLS HEATHERDALE Bowling Club hosted the 2016 Eastern Ranges Men’s and Women’s Novice Championship finals last week under some very challenging windy weather conditions. It was an all-Black, all-Berwick affair in the Men’s final with Michael Black and his brother Fred Black making the final after beating all comers in the preliminary rounds held a few weeks ago. Fred eventually emerged victorious defeating brother Michael 22-14. Great work Fred and Michael, it was a fantastic effort to both reach the final and special congratulations to our Regional Champion from Berwick Bowling Club. OPEN DAY Last Sunday Berwick Bowling Club hosted an Open Day at their fantastic facility in an effort to raise awareness and access to the sport of lawn bowls. The event attracted a large number of enthusiastic visitors who were looked after by our coaches and club members who provided instructions and tips on how the game is played. All age groups were represented and after a little exercise on the greens the smell of the barbecue attracted a good deal of attention. Many people who attended on the day have been back to the club looking to enjoy more of the sport after enjoying the experience so much.

Battle hardened Jeep pushes on By Ewan Kennedy JEEP Wrangler is a descendant of the World War II Jeep, which has been referred to as, “the car that won a war”. That versatile little 1941 4WD played a major part in communications and the movement of the men and equipment on all fronts during that horrible period. Jeep has introduced a 75th anniversary version of the Wrangler to celebrate that original military Jeep. Renegade, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee have also been built, but our road test vehicle this week is the Wrangler - the roughest, toughest Jeep of them all. The 75th Anniversary Wrangler has a ‘military-green-and-mud’ look. The mud part of the look is by way of dark bronze wheels, roof rails, grilles, and the foglight and taillight surrounds. Bronze ‘75 Years 1941’ badges mark the occasion. Clever, almost hidden, touches include a tiny black Jeep in profile on the lower-right corner of the inside of the windscreen, and a similar frontal grille-and-headlight in black under the interior mirror. The seats have a debossed (the opposite of embossed) 75th Anniversary logo and are trimmed in a black and vinyl combo. Again there are bronze details.

Rugged off-road running is what the Jeep Wrangler is all about. Overall, the 75th theme works well and grabbed plenty of comments from people who saw it, interestingly, not just from Jeep enthusiasts, but from people who just like something out of the ordinary. Our test Wrangler was powered by a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine. Introduced in 2012, this modern twin-cam unit puts out 209 kW of power, with 347 Nm to torque. Torque comes on strong from just 1800 revs, so provides providing diesel-like grunt that’s perfect for off-road driving. A five-speed automatic transmission is likely to be the biggest seller and though it seems to be cheating in
Jeep Wrangler has become a little more sophisticated over the years, but it still has a rugged feel that gives the impression it really would like to get off-road to show its stuff. Steering is on the vague side with a tendency to wander about when travelling in a straight line. So we put our brains back a few decades to a time when most cars felt like this and let the Jeep do its own thing. Instead of trying to correct every tiny movement you keep your hands light on the wheel and let the vehicle do its own thing - and overall it keeps a straight course. The suspension is relatively rough
some ways to drive a tough 4WD with a self-shifter there’s no doubt it’s simpler to drive in the tough on-road conditions that are likely to be the playground of the typical Wrangler. As part of the 75th Anniversary celebrations Jeep took us to the Parachilna area of the Flinders Ranges a few months back. There we played on claypans and sand dunes, as well as traversing rugged off-road sections that may never have felt tyres before. Great fun. But this week we came back to earth, testing the Wrangler on motorways, suburban roads, carparks and suchlike boring conditions.
and the cabin isn’t the quietest place in which you've ever travelled. We soon grew to love the Jeep’s character and revel in the old fashioned feel. It’s a shame that too few Jeep Wrangler owners don’t get off-road in serious conditions. We highly recommend it, but make sure you get some driver training, and ideally travel in convoy with at least one other vehicle. Mazda at the leading edge By Derek Ogden RELAX, everything’s under control well, almost everything, with the Mazda6 2.5-litre Atenza petrol automatic sedan I’m driving. Already the possessor of the latest in safety technology, the Mazda flagship has been endowed with more of the same, putting the driver and passengers at even more ease than before with no added wallet anxiety. For example, the new Mazda6 still keeps an eye on pedestrians with Smart City Brake Support, now with the upper detection speed range increased from 30 km/h to 80 km/h. Smart Brake Support, which detects obstacles ahead of the vehicle, also has had its operating range expanded to between 15 and 160 kilometres per hour, while Mazda’s newest i-Activsense technology, Traffic Sign Recognition, makes its Mazda6 debut displaying the speed limit on the stretch of road being travelled. Driving dynamics and noise, vibration and harshness measures have been given a boost with Mazda’s world-first G-Vectoring Control, first seen in the new Mazda3, which gives a more controlled drive, while cabin quietness has been improved thanks to a range of sealing and noise absorption updates. Mazda sticks with winning looks for its flagship 6 . fold automatically and the introduction of Mazda’s newest colour, Machine Grey Metallic. Mazda6 is available as a sedan or wagon in four grades - Sport, Touring, GT and Atenza - with two engines, a 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol and 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D diesel. The test vehicle was a Mazda6 2.5 Atenza petrol automatic sedan, on the market for $45,390, plus on-road costs. Already sleek and sporty in nature, the Mazda6 sedan stays faithful to the company’s Kodo ‘Soul of Motion’ design language. The only change has been a redesign of the automatic folding door mirrors and the addition of a new
hero colour in Machine Grey Metallic. At 2830 mm, the new Mazda6 sedan has one of the longest wheelbases in its segment, making for a spacious cabin. The boot is a cavernous 474 litres. The fit and finish of the cabin are second to none in this price segment, with the range-leading Atenza featuring top quality nappa leather upholstery covering plush seats, featuring coloured stitching and piping. A new steering wheel has a smaller centre, slimmer chrome on the lower spoke, while upgraded instruments focus on improving the legibility of the Active Driving Display, which is now full colour, brighter and with more def-
inition, to enable drivers to concentrate more on driving. Connectivity is via hands-free phone, with a voice function able to read emails out loud when the vehicle is on the move. Pre-set messages can be used to give a suitable reply. Web content is obtainable through smartphone. A Bose six or eleven-speaker audio are on offer, depending on model, and new to the range is DAB+ digital radio. Navigation software comes with free upgrades for three years. Power trains are carried over from the previous Mazda6 launched in 2012. The 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G direct injec-
tion petrol engine features a high 13:1 compression ratio; a specially designed 4-2-1 exhaust system and enhanced fuel spray properties to counter the drawbacks to such high compression. A balance shaft offsets the added vibration from the most powerful Skyactiv engine to date, putting out 138 kW of power at 5700 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 3250 rpm. Combined urban / highway fuel consumption is put at 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres and carbon dioxide emissions at 153 g/km. Safety has been advanced with additions to the Mazda i-Activsense system, including better detection of pedestrians via a new camera up front; new traffic sign identification technology; and brake support that now operates over a wider speed range. Passive safety comes a rigid body and built-in energy absorbing crumple zones, plus front driver and passenger, front side, and front and rear curtain airbags. As well as a driver’s seat position memory function, the angle, brightness and content of the Active Driving Display can be stored. Things have changed so swiftly over the past few years for the Mazda6. Improvements have come thick and fast.
