Speedie to lead By Monique Kuzeff ANNA Speedie will be taking the City of Wodonga forward in her second term as mayor, after being voted in at the council meeting on Monday night. “I look forward to using my 11 years of experience and relationships with government and the private sector to the betterment of this city,” Cr Speedie said in her mayoral speech. “This new council has been handed a strong and financially sound platform on which to progress over the next four years.” Cr Speedie was among two other councillors, Ron Mildren and former mayor John Watson, nominated to step up for the mayoral role. However, Cr Watson declined the opportunity to run for the position due to personal reasons and commitments. Cr Mildren “reluctantly” accepted the nomination on the basis that Cr Watson had declined. “The feedback and information that I got from the constituents in this area over the past few days has been overpowering for the request for change,” Cr Mildren said. “I think we need to be seen to be offering the opportunity for the alternative opinions to be heard, and I think that this is what this process is all about.” Cr Speedie won the mayoral role with four to three votes, joined by Cr Watson, Cr Danny Lowe and Cr Kat Bennett. Councillors Libby Hall and Tim Quilty voted in favour of Cr Mildren. Cr Bennett admitted her support for Cr Speedie because of her strong primary vote, and extensive knowledge of local government. “Both residents and ratepayers put Cr Speedie as their number one choice, so there’s obviously a large proportion in our community that do support Cr

Council voted not to appoint a deputy mayor but agreed to extend the one year mayoral job to a two-year term. Upon accepting her mayoral reelection, Cr Speedie highlighted some achievements of council in the past five years including economic growth, fast planning permit turnover, and both private and council investments.
“These things don’t just happen by themselves - they take strong relationships and hard work lobbying government and commitment to the future of our city,” Cr Speedie said. “With the fastest planning permit turnaround in the state, and businesses choosing Wodonga to establish themselves in our city, I think this council
can move forward with confidence of a strong and robust structure to continue moving our city forward.” She praised the new council saying it was “fantastic” to have new ideas, visions and energy on council and that she looked forward to assist each councillor with getting up to speed with current and prospective projects.

New centre cuts waste By Monique Kuzeff THE $2.4 million Albury Recycling Centre is officially open at the Albury Waste Management Centre offering residents the opportunity to freely and actively recycle old items that would otherwise go to landfill. The new recycling facility was opened last week and is one of 60 community recycling centres across New South Wales that is able to accept non-recyclable and toxic items including gas cylinders, batteries, fluorescent light tubes, paints and smoke detectors. It is expected to process over 10,000 tonnes of material each year diverting 40 to 60 per cent of that from landfill. AlburyCity councillor Henk van de Ven said that through the new recycling centre Albury was “leading the way” with waste reduction through recycling. “We are reducing waste that goes to landfill, our Halve Waste program by empowering residents to recycle everything that is possible to recycle,” Cr van de Ven said upon opening the facility. “It aims to change the way our community manages household wastes now and in to the future. “AlburyCity receives calls every week from councils right around Australia that want to learn what we are doing here.” Through the recycling centre the community will be able to help to reduce its impact on the environment by diverting waste from landfill, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and extend the life of the city’s landfill rather than having to create a new one. “We are doing this for the future of our environment, we are also doing this for the future or our community’s children,” he said.

isting chemical cleanout recycling programs, which happens from time to time by offering residents this one, year-round free service,” Mr Aplin said. “And that’s the important part - it’s a free service to drop off those problem wastes that really should not be in kerbside bins and certainly landfill.” Additionally, as part of its cuttingedge concept Aware Industries, a not-
for-profit group which involves local people with disabilities, long-term jobseekers and those retraining for jobs, will run a “re-use shop” from December where the team will refurbish and fix recyclable items. Aware Industries’ Alison Reed said the group was appreciative of the opportunity to work in the facility and build the business for people with a disability.
“This site will provide our staff with meaningful employment, opportunities to experience the retail environment and provide education about the importance of sustainability,” she said. “We are very passionate about recycling, repurposing and re-using products that may otherwise go to landfill, it’s something that we’ve been advocating for years.”
Mosque moving forward on base of faith By Monique Kuzeff AN old weatherboard two-bedroom house which is past its use-by date, falling to pieces with paint stripping from the window sills and water leaking from the toilet and bathroom hinges is where the Border Muslim community has been going to pray for years. In 2014 the Albury Wodonga Islamic Society called upon the wider community to have an input in the decision as to whether they should renovate the old house or demolish it and build a mosque. The community opted for the latter. So in the middle of 2014 the Islamic society began to raise money to build a “respectable” mosque in the place of the unsightly old house on Wagga Road, in Lavington.
To date they have raised about $290,000 out of the pockets of border Muslims and some significant donations from Muslim communities in metropolitan areas. A mosque is a place where Muslims can congregate, to share feelings with their “brothers” and practice forms of worship, society president Yakub Mohammed said. “A Muslim prays at least five times a day with some physical actions and all prayers should be prayed at the mosques but Islam allows flexibility at work of course,” he said. “There are some people who spend as much time at the mosque as they do at home and there are some who just go to pray and then leave. “It enables us to have group discussion about how to further enhance

“People came along with their kids and asked us all these questions related to our thoughts on the Sydney siege and terrorist activities happening around the world in the name of Islam, the hijab, why some ladies wear it and others don’t and whether both male
and female Muslims pray in the same venue,” Mr Mohammed said. “People asked us such questions which was what we wanted because if they had any misconceptions about our beliefs and culture, we could clarify it.” The new mosque will have a large meeting hall and meeting rooms with a kitchen, bathroom and concreted car park and is expected to cost between $400,000 to $500,000. Mr Mohammed voiced some concerns about the risk of vandalism once the mosque is built saying those who may have been against it could lash out. “The first few months may be hard for us,” he said. “I think some people will come out and try to vandalise it but after while it will be old news.”

Focus on innovative education By Monique Kuzeff MINISTER for Education and Training Simon Birmingham visited the Border last week to discuss and learn about models of innovation in rural and regional education at schools, universities, community colleges, early learning centres and childcare. Together with Indi MP Cathy McGowan, Minister Birmingham visited a number of education institutions across Wodonga including the Albury Wodonga Community College, Latrobe University and Wodonga Early Years Childcare service to gain a broader understanding of the innovative education and training in regional Australia, particularly in Wodonga. Minister Birmingham said that while the Federal Government was committed to ensur-
ing that quality educational pathways were provided for all Australians, federal members had strong connections with regional Australia. “We are especially determined to make sure that, across all our policy settings, we do the best we possibly can by our regional education institutions,” Minister Birmingham said. “Here at Latrobe University’s Wodonga campus, together with the local TAFE, we are seeing a wonderful example of tertiary providers collaborating with one another doing so in a manner that is innovative through their new diploma to degree pathway programs. “These are the types of models that I want to take back and think about in the context of higher education reform.” Ms McGowan’s message for
the Minister on the day was that models of innovation in education in Wodonga could break down barriers to higher education faced by rural, regional and remote students, as well as deliver nationwide benefits. “We’ve got so much potential in regional Australia, and I’m just really looking forward to making sure the education policy of the Turnbull Government actually reflects rural and regional Australia,” Ms McGowan said. “We all know that the future of the rest of Australia rests on us in the regions, and education is the most important foundation for everybody," she said. “So as we do innovation, as we do change, we’ve got to have education at the centre of it, so that everybody has the opportunity to reach their potential.”
A $50 MILLION injection of funds from the NSW Government should see the replacement of the ageing regional rail fleet start two years earlier than planned. Deputy Premier Troy Grant and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance announced extra funding this week to replace trains that are up to 35 years old. The fund injection will see the buying process for new XPTs kick off in the first half of next year - two years earlier than promised. “We’ve already committed to starting planning for a faster, modern, comfortable country train fleet by 2019, but we’re not going to wait. We’re getting the ball rolling now, so we can get contracts signed in this term of government and new trains on our tracks earlier,’’ Mr Grant said. “This is a real commitment to rail passengers in the bush and we expect it to also generate regional maintenance jobs.’’ Minister Constance said the new fleet would replace the 60 XPT passenger cars currently operating on the NSW TrainLink network, taking customers between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Dubbo, and going through regional towns including Bathurst, Orange, Taree, Coffs Harbour, Grafton, Casino, Goulburn and Albury.
Concept art of what the new train will look like. “We’ve boosted spending now to $50 million so we can bring forward the best solutions for country travellers,” Mr Constance said. “We want this to be a great outcome and for that to happen, we need to start talking to industry about the options available and how we get new trains on the track quickly.” Opportunities to replace more than 50 XPLORER and Endeavour trains that serve other key regional destinations like Armidale, Moree, Griffith, Broken Hill, Canberra, the Hunter and South Coast (between Ki-
ama and Bomaderry), will also be investigated as part of the work. “Country travellers deserve modern trains, and the very real dividends resulting from the sound financial management of this Government will make it happen,’’ Mr Grant said. “A new fleet of trains will ultimately require less work to maintain, are more reliable and can be used more often.” Each year about one million customer journeys are taken on the XPT fleet, which travels 3.5 million kilometres a year.

Funding, brick by brick By Monique Kuzeff THE Wodonga Men’s Shed has officially launched their newest campaign, ‘Buy a Brick’, in the hope of achieving their target of raising $50,000 through small fund-raisers by the end of the year to put towards their new shed. The Buy a Brick campaign comes as a big opportunity for the shed to grow closer to their end goal of building their new shed at Jamieson Court in Wodonga. Having unofficially begun the campaign in June, the not-for-profit group has already sold about 30 bricks at $100 each which has contributed close to $3000 to their fund. Their target is to sell 200 bricks by the middle of next year. The thing about the Buy a Brick campaign is that the bricks are unique. Any individual, group or business can purchase a brick off the Men’s Shed website and have their name inscribed onto it. The brick will then be laid down to pave the new footpath at the front of the new shed. “The fact that anyone can easily go online and buy a brick, inscribe their name, family name, a lasting memory of a loved one, or promote their own business can give a lasting memory at our new location,” Wodonga Men’s Shed president Alton Butt said. “Through buying a brick, you are supporting the Wodonga Men’s Shed who is supporting men’s health because we are giving these guys a place to keep them occupied and happy.” With the Wodonga Men’s Shed members quickly growing, the current site and location is proving to be overcrowded and undersized. Since January, the shed has garnered close to $100,000, with about $80,000 in pledges.
Buying a brick is a major contribution to the Wodonga Men’s Shed as it enables them to build their path and at the same time recognise the generosity of those who helped make it happen. “I think a lot of people like to see their name in different places and we
think this is a good way of doing that,” Wodonga Men’s Shed fund-raising committee chairperson Greg McGuire said. “Some people have already bought a brick for someone close to them who has passed away and we are going to put

Bin-full of praise
THERE’S no excuse for sitting on the couch and being alone especially when there are plenty of community groups out there offering a large variety of activities for people of all ages. Many of these community groups will be set-up at the Mirambeena Community Centre on Friday 9 December to showcase their crafty interests spanning embroidery and quilting to weaving and dancing - at the first ever Art and Craft Exhibition. Everyone is invited to come along to the Art and Craft Exhibition and checkout the large variety of free activities and groups offered and hosted on this side of the Border. Each community group will offer a variety of activities, some may be what you have always wanted get involved with but just didn’t know about. It will be the first time that this many not-for-profit groups will be situated in the one place so if you are all about your arts, crafts and handiwork it’s an exhibition not to be missed. This exhibition comes as an opportunity to bring many different community groups together to showcase activities on offer and to promote co-operation between these groups. Mirambeena Activities Club publicity officer Lorraine Scott said it would be a “one-of-akind” event that has never been done before in the area. “It’s going to be a fairly big event with many community groups getting together,”
THE three bin system has proven to deliver positive results with it showing 30,000 tonnes of organic waste being diverted from landfill since its rollout on the Border and Indigo Shire. The three bin system has achieved recycling rates of 84 per cent, which is significantly above the NSW State Target of 70 per cent. AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack described the results as “outstanding” saying if the waste had gone to landfill it would have generated almost 30,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases. “Instead, it has been turned into compost and used in gardens and landscaping across the region,” Cr Mack said. “We’re now achieving the best recycling rates per household in NSW.” This turnaround has occurred within five years since the start of the Halve Waste Program and the contamination rate of the green bin is the lowest in Australia at only one per cent, Cr Mack said. “I applaud our local residents for their acceptance of this new service and its credit to everyone who is participating and recognising the importance of reducing waste for our future generations.” Since 2012, the region has achieved a 33 per cent reduction in waste to landfill which Cr Mack said has set the region on target to achieve the overall 50 per cent reduction by 2020. Cr Mack encouraged residents to visit the Halve Waste website to find out more information on managing household waste.

Hooking up WODONGA residents and businesses will soon have their chance to access the National Broadband Network (NBN) when it is switched on in parts of the city later this month. Various events will be held across the Border over the next two weeks including the NBN Connect Roadshow, which started on Monday and will run until 20 November, to inform people on how to switch over to the NBN on their service provider.
The NBN Connect Roadshow uses large interactive touchscreens showing whether the NBN network is accessible at any given address and what speed tier is recommended at that address. The NBN hosted the Residential Community Expo at The Cube on Tuesday and will host the Business Expo at the same venue on Wednesday 9 November. Wodonga Council’s Economic Development Manager
Adrian Wiseman said access to the NBN is as much a business activity as a social asset. “Our key sectors, including the health, education, manufacturing and professional services, will benefit from the opportunities it will bring to the region,” Mr Wiseman said. “Not to mention the boost it will provide residents in keeping connected to family and friends and having key information at their fingertips.”

Letters Flood of complaints TO GET to the point of why the Murray River was allowed to flood unnecessarily, the MDBA, from their statements, have decided that it was better to allow some flooding rather than lose “air space” in the Hume Dam. The MDBA has decided that there is more value, for the MDBA, in having extra water than damage caused by flooding along the Murray. I hope as many affected by flooding as possible join the class action to recoup some compensation and send a clear message to the authorities of a fair go for all. Common sense should have told the MDBA that water should have been released earlier than what they did and not favouring maximum dam levels over damages caused by flooding downstream. Thanks for the melodies By Monique Kuzeff FRIDAYS on My Mind is back! As it kicked off at the Cube in Wodonga on Friday last week the popular evening event quickly drew in people of all ages. The free community event entails music and entertainment for the whole community, with plenty of activities available and fun even spilling in to the Wodonga Library and Art Space Wodonga. For the first Fridays on My Mind, the lively 17-piece Murray Riverina Jazz Orchestra opened the evening playing to the likes of Michael Buble, Robbie Williams, Harry Connick Jr and Natalie Cole. Vocalist Hetty Kate has performed right around Australia and over the seas in Europe, while Paul Hogan performs regularly throughout Melbourne. FROM the elegant haunting music of master movie composer Alexandre Desplat (Deathly Hallows, Grand Budapest, Imitation Game) to the stark but beautiful scenery - The Light Between Oceans stamps itself as a cut above. With a story that could have slipped to the melodrama this could have been another Notebook (not meant in a good way) but instead the sum of its parts, from intense and yet restrained performances (particularly from Vikander and to a lesser extent Fassbender) to its music and scenery creates something infinitely watchable and tearjearking in equal numbers. It is only pacing and a tendency to wallow that stops this really soaring. Adapted from the Australian ML Stedman’s novel The Light Between Oceans takes us very effectively back to 1920s Australia (thanks in part to solid performances from Garry McDonald and Jack Thompson - yes there are Aus-

tralians in this Australian story, but not that many - rest assured, this is no Thorn Birds). The Australia we see here is one still shell-shocked from four years of war and in this climate a man fresh from four years at the front takes a job relieving at a remote lighthouse in Western Australia. He’s hiding from life but from sparse visits and letters a local mainland girl takes his heart and brings him back to life. However when he marries her and takes her to Janus to live with him in total isolation things change for both of them. When they rescue a baby adrift in a rowboat life takes another emotional turn.
Vikander is outstanding as the bright young woman who is eventually worn down by life and tragedy but determined to hold on for dear life while Fassbender manages to impart the feeling of a man lost and found and lost again. The problem with watching this as an Australia is that it is very easy to spend too much time waiting for the characters to go all “Meryl Streep”with their accents (mercifully all three leads do a pretty good job and don’t go too over the top). It is a little slow - but then slow and steady wins the race in this case. -Tania Phillips

Music bursts out of box THE planets aligned for the first annual Albury Chamber Music Festival which is set to make sweet, sweet music in Albury this weekend. Starting on Friday with the opening recital and reception, the event will be held over three days at three iconic Albury locations - St Matthew’s Church in Kiewa Street, The Adamshurst Ballroom in David Street, and Murray Art Museum Albury in Dean Street. Artistic director Helena Kernaghan said the event, which only starting being planned in mid-May, will feature the talents of Australia’s leading mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell, Melbourne’s newest most exciting string quartet, the Quartz Quartet, Sydney’s established and highly acclaimed Acacia Quartet, cellist Josephine Vains from The Firebird Trio, and Melbourne organist Rhys Boak. Helena, a highly respected local musician, member of the Orpheus Piano Trio and local music teacher, said the event came about after a discussion between herself, festival director Father Peter Macleod-Miller and Sally-Anne Russell following Ms Russell’s concert in the town. She said enthusiasm had been high and with Father Peter owning Adamshurst and being involved with St Matthews, finding venues hadn’t been the drama it might normally be and the event fell into place. Helena said planning had already begun for next year’s festival and she hoped the event would fill a niche for the region. “This exciting new event aims to
bring Australia’s finest performers to the Border for a series of seven wonderful recitals over three days,” Helena, from the musical Kernaghan family, said. “There will be a free masterclass workshop for local up-and-coming performers, and guest appearances by local saxophonist/composer Stephen O’Connell and clarinet player Khayl Picard, a former Albury High School student who is currently completing his final year of music study at the Sydney Conservatorium. “I am delighted to participate as pianist in the Ensemble in Residence, Albury and Castlemaine-based group, The Orpheus Piano Trio. “We have an exciting and varied program to kick-start the festival with works from a huge variety of composers and styles. “Our Saturday afternoon concert features works by Beethoven, with his famous Ghost Trio and Harp Quartet. “The Saturday evening concert is special for the area as it is the first concert performance at MAMA! This concert features the wonderful melodic writing of Schubert with a selection of his Lied, as well as Dvorak’s famous Dumky Trio. “There is plenty of Australian music on offer and our final concert at the Adamshurst Ballroom on Sunday afternoon features a world premiere performance of Michael Lampard’s Song Cycle for mezzo soprano and string quartet.” For more information head to https:// www.alburychambermusicfestival.com. au/program/.

Kade stars in Albury’s big win By Tania Phillips ALBURY has proven too strong for St Patricks defeating them by seven wickets in their Round 5 Cricket Albury Wodonga Provincial first grade match at Bilson Oval on Saturday. Batting first, St Pats finished their one-day innings with 9/135 with Luke Restall top scoring with 49 while Dave Tassell took 2/20. However, the hero of the game for Albury was Kade Brown, who took 3/22 and then came out blazing with the bat to score 53 to help his side to 2/136, with Nicholas Morris chiming in with a valuable 45 not out. At Les Cheesley Oval, it was Wodonga who claimed the points over East Albury setting them 9/215 after batting first. Lucas Hutchinson came close to scoring the only first grade century of the day, making a solid 96 with good support from Jack Craig 40. A Ridd 4/24 and Sean Barrett 2/41 were the best of the East Albury bowlers. In reply, some good bowling by Byron Hales 3/35 and Daniel Dixon 2/16, had East Albury back in the pavilion for just 136 with Dylan Weeding scoring 25. At Lavington sports ground, the home team were in devastating form making 9/286 with Matthew Sharp making 83, Brett Davies 41 and Samuel Harris 38, while Aaron Killen took 4/46 and Callum Prossor 2/15. In reply, Wodonga Raiders crashed to be all out for 78 with Joel Felmingham scoring 28. Brett Davies 3/7 and Michael Galvin 3/46 were the destroyers. Tallangatta passed the New City score with the loss of just one wicket at Rowen Park. Restricting New City to just 72, with Dilhara Lokuettige taking 3/11. In reply, they made 1/73 with Matt Armstrong hitting up an unbeaten 41. North Albury won a tense game against Belvoir at Kelly Park. Batting first, a Drew Cameron 91 seemed to set Belvoir up with the team scoring 7/181. Joshua Warren chimed in with 41. However, Greg Daniels led the way for North Albury with a solid 72 as North Albury passed the total with the loss of seven wickets in the 48th over.

Setting sail for discovery day THE Albury Wodonga Yacht Club opened its doors recently for its annual Discover Sailing Day with 45 people taking advantage of the opportunity. Club commodore Leanne Thomson said the windy weather kept the number of participants down though lots of families took advantage of the day to come out and enjoy the woodfire pizza and watch their family members on the lake. “Once a year we open up our doors for people to come and sail,” she said. “It is always in November and proves to be quite a lovely family outing.” The Albury Wodonga Yacht Club is an institution around the town and has been running for 58 years. It is surprisingly, according to Commodore Thomson, the only club on the lake - a body of water that is five times bigger than Sydney Harbour. The club has just under 300 members and a very high family membership. She said with the Discover Sailing Day now behind it, the club moves into its learn to sail program. The aptly named Tackers Program is aimed at eight to 12-year-olds while there is then a dinghy program aimed at teaching youths and adults how to sail. The club also run the Sailability Program once a month which is aimed at getting disabled people out on the lake and into the sport. As well as its programs the club holds club competitions every Sunday

Commodore Thomson said members of the general public are welcome to come along and sign in, buy a coffee from the cafe and “enjoy the spectacle”. “I think being a club that is 100 per cent voluntary gives us a bit of a family feel,” she said when asked why the group is so popular. And she said the nice thing is that it is for people of all ages and abilities whether they want to compete or just want to get out and sail.
