They’re survivors SEVEN of 11 incumbent City of Casey councillors have survived the election, with official results declared last night (Wednesday). There were close calls across the board and preference distribution made all the difference in getting candidates over the line. Amanda Stapledon has been returned to council to represent Mayfield Ward along with Steve Beardon who trailed Cr Stapledon by just 401 votes after preference distribution. “I am so honoured and so grateful and surprised,� Cr Stapledon said. “I had everything against me including a shocking flu, but I am honoured to be part of this community that has placed their trust and faith in me.� The Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate confirmed last week that there was an ongoing investigation regarding ballot papers being stolen from mailboxes in Mayfield Ward. “We’re keeping in touch with the VEC about the possible removal of ballot papers, but it is a very small number of confirmed cases where ballot papers have either been removed or not delivered to certain addresses,� a spokesperson for the inspectorate said. “And as theft of mail (or incorrect addressing of material) does occur in some areas, we have to take all possibilities into account.� Cr Stapledon had said that while there was an investigation into these allegations, she trusted the VEC and the inspectorate to deliver accurate election results. “If it has occurred, I think it would be thoroughly investigated before going to count,� she said. “I don’t believe they would have let the count go through without triple-checking the ballots." Mayfield incumbent and now former councillor Gary Rowe was the last candidate to have his preferences distributed for the ward. Balla Balla Ward incumbent councillor Geoff Ablett has been retured to his seat with a landslide victory.
Figures results released on the Victorian Election Commission website place Cr Ablett with 55.31 per cent of first preference votes. The next closest candidates for Balla Balla were Tom Rennick and Frank Lamattina with 13.64 per cent and 13.87 per cent of first preference votes respectively. Mr Rennick conceded defeat to Cr Ablett on Thursday 27 October. “I think it’s pretty much done and dusted at this point,� Mr Rennick said. “It’s quite nice that I’ve had just over 10 per cent of the constituents think I’m worthwhile but I can’t see that much changing as I think the other three candidates will be preferencing Geoff.� “I wish him all the best and I hope he and Casey do a good job in the next four years.� Although gracious in defeat, Mr Rennick said these results wouldn’t stop him from working to improve the City of Casey. “If another opportunity arises for me to assist Casey in the future then I will do that,� he said. Incumbent councillor for Edrington Ward Susan Serey was the first candidate in her ward to reach the necessary quota of votes to be elected with 28 per cent of first preference votes. Timothy Jackson is the second elected councillor for Edrington, and came out on top after a tight preference distribution between himself, James Williams and incumbent Mick Moreland. City of Casey Mayor and incumbent councillor for Springfield Ward Sam Aziz has been voted back into council in a very close decider. “I’m feeling great and I am grateful for the people of Springfield for returning me to council,� he said. “I had a fierce campaign run against me with state-wide negative coverage and ridiculous accusations, but the voters paid attention to the scoreboard.� Second incumbent for Springfield Louise Berkelmans lost her seat by a margin of 2514 after preference distribution. Pain in fast lane By Victoria Stone-Meadows TRAFFIC on the Monash Freeway is about to get even crazier as temporary lane markers and yellow lines are rolled out to prepare for widening works. Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan made the announcement on Sunday 30 October that there will be traffic changes on the freeway between Eastlink and Clyde Road in both directions. These changes will have lanes realigned and speed limits reduced on the freeway through Dandenong, Doveton, Hallam, Narre Warren and Berwick. “We are alerting drivers to these works so they can consider the impact on their daily commute and plan ahead for the change in traffic conditions,” Mr Donnellan said. “We’re asking motorists to be patient, allow extra travel time and drive safely. “We thank you for your patience while works are underway.” Due to the shoulder strengthening works that have been underway since 18 September, the freeway will continue to have the same number of lanes open during peaktimes as construction begins. The upgrading of the Monash Freeway is scheduled to be completed by 2018 and will see about 30kms of extra lanes added to the road.

Thieves pinch tools at will from tradies By Aneeka Simonis

Southern Metro Proactive Policing Unit Sergeant Brad Johnstone said tradies were being targeted by opportunistic criminals on the lookout for unsecured tools. “While this isn’t a new problem for us, we have seen a recent spike particularly in the areas of Berwick, Narre Warren and Endeavour Hills,” Sgt Johnstone said. “Most cases involve thieves who roam residential streets overnight searching for easy targets like an unsecured trailer. “Unfortunately, tools are easy to steal and can be sold for cash, often to other tradies.” Sgt Johnstone said police would be speaking to tradespeople about the best ways to keep their tools nailed down. “The inconvenience for an individual when the tools vital to their trade are stolen is huge,” Sgt Johnstone said. “The reality is that a number of these crimes can be reduced by some simple preventative measures.” Mr Pollard said he personally knew six tradies who had had their tools stolen in the past few weeks, including a plumbing apprentice who had his van pinched. These tools are often traded in at pawn shops for cash.

River Gum Ward will have no change in representation as both Wayne Smith and Damien Rosario have been voted back into council, but Cr Smith says the competition was no less fiecre. “Any competition is stiff competition, everyone wanted to win, but I think by our records the community were satisfied,” he said. “We are the only pair that has been returned which is a good thing for River Gum because they will have consistent representation and we have proved to be a good team.” “We have different views but when it comes to ward decisions we support each other with our ideas and projects and people know they can come to either and we will both support them.” Councillors for the 2016-'20 council term will be declared on Wednesday 2 November 2016 at the council chambers in Narre Warren.

TOOLS valued at more than a million dollars were stolen from utes, work sites and properties in Cardinia Shire, Casey and Greater Dandenong over 12 months. Darren Pollard, 49, from Berwick, knows half a dozen tradies who have been targeted by tool raiders in the past few weeks, and he himself has been a victim. All it took was 15 minutes for thieves to pinch thousands of dollars' worth of tools from the back of his work truck. “I went to do a quote in Jayco Drive, Dandenong, about six weeks ago. I was inside the factory on a Monday morning from 7.20am for about 15 minutes. When I came out there were two blokes stealing tools from my work truck,” he said. “They got away with a demo saw and power tools. They cost me about $3500.” The thieves took off in a white ute, and that was the last the sole trader and father of six saw of his tools. “I have to source new tools to keep the job going,” he said, explaining his insurance did not cover the theft. Police in the outer south-east region are urging tradies to increase the security of their gear as a result of the $1 million spike in tool thefts

The free family fun day out saw children of all ages and their parents join in the activities of offer. Children were encouraged to dress up in their favorite clothes/costumes and everyone celebrated the value children add
to a community. There were activities on offer for everyone including face painting, a sausage sizzle, art and craft activities, music and a chance to play and explore the recentlyredeveloped playground. The steel for the iconic winged roof of Bunjil Place has arrived on site and is beginning to be installed.
Plan is back A PLANNING application that was rejected by City of Casey Council on 12 July 2016 will be considered by VCAT this month after the applicant amended their plans. South East Land Corp Pty Ltd have amended their application to build a concrete batching plant and landscape garden supplies store on Bullarto Road in Clyde adjacent to the new Belmond housing estate. When the application was first considered by Casey Council, there were 30 objections to the proposal that cited reasons such as amenity disruption, health concerns and interference with future land development. The land the proposed batching plant is set for has been zoned as Urban Growth, and planning permits must take future developments into consideration.
City of Casey manager of Statutory Planning and Building Services Duncan Turner confirmed that council continue to oppose the application despite the amendments. “There were many amenity concerns and the need to protect future strategic planning opportunity,” Mr Turner said. The Council Report from July this year that outlines the reasons for rejecting the application includes potential conflict with the future development of the Casey Fields South Precinct Structure Plan. There are concerns from council that allowing the application for an industrial development would interfere with future residential and community development plans in that part of Clyde. Properties surrounding the proposed batching site also raised many concerns about how an industrial site would impact
on residents' comfort and health. Surrounding properties listed concerns such as traffic, exposure to dust and chemicals, proximity to houses, and decrease in property prices. South East Land Corp Pty Ltd has lodged an amendment application and a review of council’s decision with VCAT in the hope it will be overturned. The applicants have also amended their plans to address 14 of the concerns the council and community submitted during the planning application process. Objectors and supporters of the development have until 7 November to submit a statement to VCAT before official proceedings begin. The matter will be heard by VCAT over four days on 28, 29 30 November and 1 December before results of VCAT decision will be known.

CRANBOURNE Secondary College will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next month but assistant principal George Massouris is hoping someone can help find the time capsule before then. The time capsule was buried somewhere on the school grounds in 1979 but was not given a marker and all records of its location have been lost over time. “We want to locate it and put a marker there so we can dig it up when it’s time,� Mr Massouris said. “At this point we are trying to locate it and it is a mystery where it is or what is buried inside it.� The school is asking anyone who may have some information about the whereabouts of the time capsule to get in touch with the school before the 40-year anniversary. As well as information about the capsule, the school is asking anyone with interesting mementos from the last 40 years to lend them out for the anniversary celebration. “We are looking for anything people have relating to the history of Cranbourne Secondary College to be brought to the front office for photographing or we can look after it for the event,� Mr Massouris said. “We want to bring back stuff for the show to bring back memories for people.� The anniversary celebration will have these items on display in the gym as well as movies and photos from the past 40 years and current and past students performing songs from their eras.

Light plight PEARCEDALE Primary School has been denied flashing 40km/h signs near the school, with the State Government saying the Baxter-Tooradin Road isn’t busy enough to need the signs. Baxter Primary School is located about six kilometres away from Pearcedale Primary school on the same road has had the flashing signs installed. While Pearcedale Primary School has static 40km/h signs, Assistant Principal Jeff Mead says they aren’t good enough and the school needs the flashing lights. “There are traffic lights there and they are manned with the lollypop person but our concern for a number of years has been the increase in traffic as the area has built up,” he said. “There is a static 40km/h sign near the school but it’s not working, people don’t abide by it. “No-one has been hit but we don’t want to wait for an acci-
dent, we want to be pro-active on this. "Safety is a concern and we want everyone to be safe; kids, parents, staff and community.” Member for Hastings Neale Burgess has visited the school to speak about the issue and collect petitions to be delivered to the State Government to have the flashing signs installed. “Pearcedale Primary has a current student enrolment of 730 students, and parents have become increasingly concerned about the high number and speed of vehicles passing within metres of the school property and their children,” he said. “Cars and children are never a good mix and while reducing the speed limit to 40km/h will not remove all risk, it will give drivers and our children a better chance of seeing each other.” Mr Burgess has said the government has stopped funding installation of the flashing 40km/h signs around schools, but a spokesperson for the Min-
ister for Roads could not confirm this. The minister's spokesperson said due to the history of the Baxter-Tooradin Road and current road use, Pearcedale Primary School did not qualify for the flashing signs. “We are aware of the request for electronic speed signs on Baxter-Tooradin Road, near the Pearcedale Primary School,” the spokesperson said. “This request has been investigated and at this stage the road does not require electronic flashing signs. “However, we will continue to monitor Baxter-Tooradin Road and work with their community around any future improvements.” According to the office of the Minister for Roads, the BaxterTooradin Road carries approximately 8000 vehicles a day and there have been no pedestrian related crashes between Middle Road and Pearcedale Road in the latest five-year period ending 31 December last year.

Every man and his dog were invited along to meet the residents and share some puppy love to bring the wider community and the residents of the aged care facility closer together. The day included a dog parade at 2.30pm, a barbecue, and activities for everyone with two or four legs to enjoy. By Victoria Stone-Meadows A NARRE Warren North fire-fighter will be tackling 88 storeys of stairs in full fire-fighting gear later this month when he takes on the Eureka Climb challenge. Andrew Norman, 26, from Endeavour Hills will be raising money and representing the Narre Warren North CFA when he climbs the stairs of Eureka Tower to raise money for charity. Mr Norman will be carrying 23 kilograms of fire-fighting equip-
ment from the base of the tower up 300 metres of vertical staircase to the Eureka Skydeck for the fourth year in a row. The first year I did it, I thought the cause was really good and the two foundations do really great work,” Mr Norman said. “Along the way I’ve found it is still a good thing to do.” Mr Norman said he didn’t just do the stair climb for himself, but to help other people who were participating as well. “I often help people with self-
motivation - if they are struggling up the stairs I encourage them to keep going; I’m there to help others as well.” Participants in the Eureka Climb challenge raise money through sponsorship and entry fees that go towards the charities Interplast and Whitelion. Interplast sends medical teams to developing countries to provide life-saving treatment to some of the world’s most desperate people. Whitelion works with disadvantaged young people to break cycles

Mr Norman will be taking on the challage of a timed climb and is hoping to beat his personal best time of 11.5 minutes and is quietly confident he could be the fastest climber on the day. “I think I’m in with a chance but there are some quick people out there,” he said. The Eureka Climb Challenge will take place on Sunday 13 November, with staggered starts throughout the day.

A LENTIGO maligna (literally a ‘malignant freckle’) is a very slow growing but insidious type of melanoma occurring on the sun damaged skin of people from their forties onwards. They are particularly common on the head and neck. They are sometimes so slow growing that the person will ‘get used to them’ and not recognise them as a problem even when they occur in very visible sites such as the face. Furthermore the person’s friends, relatives or even doctor may not recognise a lentigo maligna from other benign freckles and pigmentations. Untreated however lentigo maligna will expand and invade and eventually become as dangerous as any other melanoma. The treatment is complete surgical excision so early diagnosis is very important to try to avoid large excision or graft repair scars. Printing money here A HALLAM-based manufacturer has received state funding towards a $1.875 million project for a printer and other new equipment. Printing and design firm Norwood Industries received the grant under the Future Industries Manufacturing Program which offers funding of up to $500,000 to eligible firms. The grant, which has been kept commercial-in-confidence, will
go towards buying and installing a large-format printer and associated equipment. It is expected to lead to Norwood doubling its digital production and manufacturing capacity, creating two new full-time jobs and boosting its exports by $100,000. Dandenong MP and Parliamentary Secretary for Industry and Employment Gabrielle Williams announced the grant on a visit to Nor-
wood on 31 October. She said the grants program helped Victoria transition towards an “advanced manufacturing economy�. Norwood is known as a worldleading specialist in printing on plastic and unusual surfaces. It uses sophisticated UV print technology. The manufacturer also provides packaging design and distribution of
items such as self-adhesive signage, binders and satchels. The State Government claims 13 recent grants to Victorian-based manufacturers under the program were expected to create 97 new fulltime jobs. CASEY council is considering dumping its sponsorship of a charity golf day which is named after its mayor. The council resolved to review its $4000 sponsorship of Narre Warren Rotary Club’s Mayoral Shield Golf Day after Casey officers recommended halving support for the 18 November event. Officers described the sponsorship benefits to Casey as “limited� and that the golf day’s $12,600 “surplus� in 2015 made its sponsorship redundant. “This (halved) funding recognises council’s historical arrangement... and ensures ongoing provision of the planned golf day event,� the report stated. At an 18 October council meeting, councillor Wayne Smith moved for retaining a one-off full sponsorship of next month’s golf day. He argued it was unwise to announce a review and pre-emptively halve the golf day’s funding. “I’d hate to think the club would pick up the paper or read the council agenda, and see we’re halving it.� The officers’ report said the event had limited community appeal. “The Rotary Golf Day meets few of the objectives of the (council’s) event sponsorship program,� the report stated. “Council’s opportunity to promote its services and key messages are limited at this event.� It attracted a “relatively low� 100 participants and not many visitors to Casey, the officers’ report stated. The golf day was smaller than other councilsponsored events such as the Berwick Show and the Tricodes Night at Cranbourne Racecourse, according to the report. Casey had sponsored the annual Rotary fundraiser for several years. The 18-round golf day funds mainly local Rotary projects as well as some international initiatives. The Rotary Club of Narre Warren was unable to comment prior to deadline.

Ex-cop swaps law for lens By Cam Lucadou-Wells DAMIEN Howard has swapped his police badge for the camera lens as he seeks to make a TAC-style “shock” commercial against family violence. He covered the Casey beat for seven years as a cop and said more needs to be done to stop the scourge. “There are a lot of organisations doing great work for victims but I feel it’s not enough - especially considering the number of people affected. “It’s a wonder the campaign’s not seen everywhere - on bus shelters and in school curriculums.” Shockingly, a woman is killed every week in Australia at the hands of her current or former partner. Mr Howard has seen hundreds of households wrecked by abusive husbands and dads in Casey. He said no other issue took up so much police time. “It’s always the stuff to do with kids that gets to me,” Mr Howard said. “It’s also when you see a dog neglected. It’s more the innocent victims that shakes me up.” He said one in four children experience family violence and then copy their parents’ tortured dynamics. They copy those “little things” that go under the radar and as a result they are three times more likely to be perpetrators or victims of family violence as adults. It doesn’t need to be physically violent to inflict deep wounds on the victims, he said. Psychological abuse is the most damaging but also, sadly, the most tolerated.
Even after her partner has threatened to kill her, sometimes the victim doesn’t think he is doing anything wrong, he said. “She says he’s not a bad guy because he doesn’t hit her. “There’s even a tolerance for it. It becomes the status quo.” One by one, the wife’s friends stop visiting due to her domineering, belligerent husband. She has no job, no confidence but is just marooned at home isolated and

They look like they’re completely broken and don’t know a way out. “We nearly have to force their hand for them to walk out.” Mr Howard had given himself a 10-year limit on his time on the police force. He had enjoyed the job, its variety and working in the community. It was busy and it got busier as Casey’s population exponentially grew.
He then walked out to pursue his long-held dream to be a film-maker. Movies grabbed Mr Howard’s imagination when he watched Steven Spielberg’s works such as ET as a child. “I have vivid memories of these films. They’re timeless. “I watch them with my own kids and I can see myself watching them with my grandkids.” His long-held goal was to work in the US as a director. When he won a scholarship to LA, it further whetted his appetite. It opened his eyes to the creative deluge of film and TV produced in Hollywood where film students inspired him with their proactivity, passion and hard work. “In any job, I thought I’d retire at 60. But I don’t think I’ll retire as a film-maker. “It’s not about the money. It’s about when you go to a movie and you feel moved - that feels amazing.” Mr Howard’s works don’t shy from difficult subjects. He has produced works on depression and on cagefighting’s positive influence on disaffected youth. For his family violence campaign, he is seeking $7000 through a crowdfunding site launched on 29 October. The fund-raising ends on 27 November. SOMETIMES the tough conversations in life are the ones that truly make a difference. That’s certainly the case for draft prospect Josh Battle, who in November 2015, walked into an AFL club for a routine draft interview. The 18-year-old key-forward, who had been a success in the TAC Cup program for the Dandenong Stingrays, was blindsided by a series of stinging hard truths about his game. “It was actually my first ever interview with an AFL club so I didn’t know what to expect. “They asked me “how do you think you’d go at the top level?” and we got into a pretty in-depth conversation and they blatantly just told me that my endurance wasn’t good enough and that I’m only a one position player and almost undraftable. “Thinking back to that moment, it did hurt but at the end of the day, I couldn’t be more grateful to that person for saying that to me. “It was such a driving force for me throughout pre-season and it was always in the back of my mind that I needed to get fitter and work a lot harder. “That same club has spoken to me this year so I’d be grateful if given the chance with them. “I’ve really worked hard on a lot of things; being that third tall forward you have to add a few more strings to your bow and I wasn’t great with my endurance. “I did a lot of extra work and extra sessions and now I strongly believe that is one of my strengths now. “I pride myself on running my opponents ragged and I just try to isolate myself in dangerous positions," Battle said. Battle, who will have his name read out at next month’s AFL National Draft, was also a talented junior cricketer, and had to make a tough decision a few years ago on which sport to pursue. “It was a pretty hard decision, but Dad sort of after a long day of cricket - noticed it was all too much, and then having footy practice the next day, I was pretty tired and I was too sore for the next game anyway. “Dad said it just wasn’t possible to play both and it’s up to you - we sat down and had probably a half-hour chat and decided I enjoyed footy more so I chose that," Battle said. It’s a decision that has paid off for the young man, who always dreamt about playing AFL football. “As a little kid I always loved footy and being a Hawks fan I loved watching Buddy Franklin play, and I guess it’s something I’ve always aspired to do. “When I go to bed and put my head on the pillow, it’s something I just constantly think about." But it’s a current Hawk champion that Battle models his game on. “Being a Hawks fan and going to most games, I really love watching Jack Gunston and he is someone I look up to and someone I model my game on." Looking ahead to next month’s AFL draft, Battle admits it is on his mind a lot, and knows that it’s almost out of his hands where he ends up next. “I guess it’s an exciting time for all draft prospects, but I try not to think about it but it’s always in the back of my mind." But the National Draft is a lottery, and Battle fully understands the possibility of having to relocate interstate. “It would obviously be hard to move away from home and family. “I’m really close to my brother Nick and he’s basically my best mate, but in saying that, I’ve wanted this for so long and if the opportunity arises, I’d be happy to go anywhere."

THE West Gippsland Cricket Association can boast bragging rights over the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association (MPCA) - even if only temporarily - after Tooradin knocked Sorrento out of the Statewide Twenty20 Big Bash competition last Wednesday night. In sensational scenes at the Seagulls’ nest, the home side defended just 120. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Tooradin openers Kade Burns and skipper Tom Hussey put on 27 for the first wicket through the first four overs before Burns was bowled for 11. Fellow all-rounder Cal O’Hare came to the crease and belted a four off just his second ball before chopping on in the next over. But from 2/35 Hussey and Bradey Welsh combined for a vital 37-run stand before Welsh holed out in the deep for 16. At 3/72 after 11 overs the Gulls had set the stage for an imposing total for the visitors to chase but they lost two wickets in the same over soon after - including Hussey for 42 - and the run rate slowed. From 5/88, the Gulls continued to lose a steady stream of wickets and could only reach 9/120 from their 20 overs. Despite opening bowler Burns conceding just one run off his first over, Tooradin’s total still seemed far too small - particularly when Sorrento was 1/66 in the 11th over courtesy of the dangerous Wilson (28) and Harris at the crease. But it all went pearshaped for the visitors - Wilson lost his middle stump to Dylan Sutton, and Harris injured his knee playing a shot over cover off O’Hare - falling and dislodging a bail in the process. Then, from 3/84 after 13 overs three wickets fell in the next four. With three overs left to play Sorrento was on 6/101 but some outstanding death bowling from Jarred Thompson and, finally, Josh Lownds saw the Gulls home by a single run in a dead-set nailbiter.

Just as gritty as it gets By Nick Creely PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 6 (Day 1) GRITTY is just one of the words that can describe CaseySouth Melbourne’s (8/242) first-innings batting performance on Saturday. It’s truly the beginning of a new leaf for the Swans, who are creating an environment that flourishes under pressure and relishes a challenge. The conditions couldn’t have been any better down at Casey Fields, as Casey-South Melbourne faced the Camberwell Magpies in the first of the Premier two-dayers. Both sides, which are similar on the ladder and have similar aged squads, were fully aware of the importance of getting off to a good start. Knowing all too well how pristine the batting conditions were, Swans skipper Lachlan Sperling did not hesitate in electing to bat after winning the toss. But the Swans started in disappointing fashion, losing openers Michael Wallace (14) and Ashan Wijayakumara (2) in the first 10 overs. Sperling and wicket-keeper Devin Pollock set about resurrecting the innings, playing patiently
and grinding out a testing period before the first drinks break. Pollock in particular played with class, especially square of the wicket, as he built towards a potentially massive and defining knock for his season. But not long after drinks, in what has almost become a custom for the Swans in the early part of the year, Pollock fell for a well-made 36 and Sperling departed for 31, leaving the Swans teetering at 4/98 with plenty of work to do. The Magpies had their tails up, bowling with great intensity and putting the Swans under immense pressure. But an entertaining and counter-attacking innings from Ryan Eaton (30) allowed the Swans to regain ascendancy over the contest, but he fell for another start off the bowling of Magpies quick Matt Dwyer. Eaton’s loss of wicket resulted in a domino effect, as Chris Benedek (10) fell only moments later to the bowling of William Walker, leaving the Swans at 6/123 and staring down the barrel of another lowly total. But the Swans of 2016/17 are no longer a side that packs it in when the going gets tough, and formed a series of vital partnerships that helped steer
the score in a positive trajectory. A 59-run partnership between Dylan Hadfield and Nathan Lambden was as brave as they come, before Brendan Rose joined in on the action, scoring 28, including four boundaries, to frustrate the Magpies. Nathan Lambden, most notably known as the Swans spearhead with the ball, played as vital as a knock can be in cricket, making a critical 32 not-out off 138 balls, an almost four-hour marathon effort that allowed the other batsman to score heavily around him. Lambden’s batting was a lesson in concentration, application and commitment on the field. All-rounder Dylan Hadfield was just as impressive, showcasing his noticeable improvement in the Premier ranks. He finished with a classy 37 off 80 balls, top-scoring for the Swans. Meanwhile, Dandenong endured a frustrating day, with day one of their clash with Kingston Hawks cancelled. The Panthers, who are skyhigh on confidence, were shellshocked when they rocked up to the ground on a perfect Melbourne day to find that the conditions were unfit for use.

CRANBOURNE star Steven Spoljaric and Parkfield middleorder batsman Manisha Dabarera made splendid centuries on Saturday, headlining a strong weekend of DDCA cricket. Spoljaric’s sparkling 153 catapulted the Eagles to 7/343 against Dandenong West at Greaves Reserve, smashing five sixes in his whirlwind knock. The Eagles started shakily, losing Lucas Ligt early, but a solid partnership between Brandon Tyzzer and wicket-keeper Jordan Cleland (27) allowed for the likes of Matt Chasemore and Spoljaric to cash in later in the day. Chasemore (69) and Tyzzer (55) played great knocks for the Eagles, while Bulls bowler Peter Atkinson (2/86) bowled his heart out for the Bulls. Shaun Weir (2/84) and Greg Siwes (2/40) also claimed wickets. Parkfield (174) can thank Dabarera (101) for its competitive score against Dingley (3/52). The number six strode to the crease with his side in trouble at 4/10, guiding the Bears through some tough times against the quick Andy Dalby (4/29) and Christo Otto (4/21). Dalby stunned the Bears early, knocking over the top three before anyone could blink. Travis D’Souza (2/4 off 3 overs) struck late will be a vital weapon for Parkfield when play resumes. Hallam Kalora Park (2/60) is in the box seat for victory after dominating Berwick (137) at Hallam. Best season for centuries By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION ROUND 4 – REVIEW (DAY 1) SWASHBUCKLING centuries headlined an action packed day in the Premier Division on Saturday, with Tooradin’s Callum O’Hare and Koowerup skipper Mark Cooper belting memorable tons. Upper-Beaconsfield continues to go from strength-to-strength with another commanding performance against top of the ladder Pakenham. The early season blockbuster saw the Maroons sent in to bat at Upper Beaconsfield Reserve, where they posted an ominous 257 off 74.4 overs. Jonathon Caderamanpulle (85) and Scott Pitcher (55) both made half-centuries, while skipper Bathiya Perera (37) chimed in with a solid knock in the middle order. Lions opening bowlers Jack Ryan (2/63) and Dom Paynter (1/37) both bowled well, while Tom Tyrrell (2/29) and Chris Savage (2/28) were among the wickets. In reply, the Lions are 0/1, 257 runs shy of cementing their standing at the top of the Premier ladder. A hapless Pakenham Upper/Toomuc could only watch in horror as Tooradin smashed 5/322 on their first day of their clash at Tooradin Reserve. Russell Lehman (62) and Andrew Proctor (60) both posted aggressive half-centuries, while skipper Tom Hussey made 35. But the real story was the electrifying knock from star batsman Callum O’Hare, who smashed his way to a brutal 135 – including four sixes – to put the Seagulls in a match-winning position next week. O’Hare started the season in modest fashion, with scores of 6 and 15, and unfortunately the Yabbies were the victim of the batsman’s appetite for runs. Kooweerup captain Mark Cooper went berserk, making over half of his side’s runs in their total of 267 at Kooweerup Reserve against Merinda Park. It’s been an unbelieve start to the year for the Demons skipper, who has made 285 runs at an average of 285. To put into context just how special the innings was, no other Demon batsman reached 30. Dustin Peebles (58) continued his strong start to the season with the bat, while Tyler Molloy (61) played a fantastic knock at the bottom of the order for the Cats. Busy time on all the greens HAMPTON PARK BOWLS IT was a big week for Hampton Park with the club fielding seven teams over three days, winning five. Racing’s Melbourne Cup and the Bowls Victorian Open meant two games in a week for midweek bowlers. They finished with three wins from four games. TUESDAY The first day saw Hampton Park playing Division 1 at Berwick, unfortunately all rinks were down. Marion Battaglia, Denise Eastick, Ellen Smith and Andrew Brandolin were closest, making a late charge to go down 20-21. Val Moore, Chris Hendrie, Helen Lambert and Shane Collins lost 12-19 and Peter Hayden, Toni Sutton, Geoff Ladner and Neville Hendrie 17-30. Hampton Park (1) 0-49 lost to Berwick (3) 16-70. At Pound Road Division 3 played another ladder leader Dandenong Club, for an all-rinks win. A late charge by Rhonda Diaper, June Damon, Brian Diaper and Geoff Ampt gave them a 26-19 win, while in another close game Jim Westwell, Gwen Clough, Ron Beverly and Heather Naismith won 21-15. In the closest game of the day Janice Collins, Lou Soligo, Ian Kitt and Ray Wood were in front at the right time for a 17-16 win. Hampton Park (2) 16-64 defeated Dandenong Club (1) 0-50. THURSDAY The hard work finally paid dividends for Division 1 when they travelled to Cardinia Waters in Pakenham and left with a 15-shot win. Val Moore, Christine Hendrie, Helen Lambert and Shane Collins set up their day early, leading 18-1 at one stage to finally finish with a 3011 win. Marion Battaglia, Denise Eastick, John Nunan and Andrew Brandolin had a close game all day and won 2822, while Jen Sherry, Toni Sutton, Geoff Ladner and Neville Hendrie fell away late in the game to lose 15-25. Double-header slot delivering big wins CRANBOURNE BOWLS CRANBOURNE ladies had a great double-header week, winning games against Vermont South on Tuesday and Waverley Golf on Thursday Skip Shirley Venville and her team were the big winners on Tuesday against Vermont South winning by 18 shots while Skip Kath Dudink and her team were the big winners on Thursday winning by 15 shots against Waverley Golf. The girls can now look forward to a well-deserved week off from bowls and enjoy the Melbourne Cup week. Final scores were Cranbourne 85 defeated Vermont South 35 on Tuesday, and Cranbourne 65 defeated Waverley Golf 47 on Thursday. An outstanding performance on Tuesday by Shirley Venville, Brenda De Lisle, Heather Witherden and Sandra Mueller. And on Thursday another outstanding performance by Kath Dudink, Minnie Lamb, Elsie Russel and Maree Taylor. Meanwhile in Division one open Cranbourne went down to Keysborough by seven shots on Tuesday but bounced back with a good win on Thursday against Narre Warren by 28 shots. Maintaining Mazda’s name By Derek Ogden LIKE the Queensland State of Origin rugby league team, the Mazda3 has continued to feed off a winning formula for more than a decade. Regarded by the Japanese auto maker as ‘The Mazda’, the small car has become the brand’s most popular model around the world. The current Mazda3 arrived in Australia at the start of 2014 as the third model to join Mazda’s new-generation product line-up. Now the new version has gained the latest in small-car styling, plus a raft of innovations, including G-Vectoring control, Mazda’s new-generation vehicle dynamics technology, and price cuts that can only add to its appeal to buyers. Available as a sedan or hatch in Neo, Maxx, Touring, SP25, SP25 GT and Astina grades, the entry-level Neo price stays at $20,490, plus on-road costs, with other models taking cuts of between $1000 and $1500 from the previous model. With the choice of two engines, the 2.0-litre petrol, with 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque, is available on Neo, Maxx and Touring grades. The more powerful 2.5-litre petrol engine, with 138 kW and 250 Nm, comes standard on SP25, GT and Astina variants. The 2.2 litre turbo-diesel engine has
been deleted due to lack of buyer interest in Australia. Mazda3 is available with a choice of either a six-speed manual or sixspeed automatic. On test was the Mazda3 SP25 GT with auto, selling for $31,990. The new Mazda3 carries through the company’s Kodo design theme, now a constant across the auto maker’s complete range of vehicles. A mildly reworked front end, Mazda says, is designed to give the Mazda3 a wider look, thus a sense of stability and confidence in the car for driver and passengers alike. There’s a new deeper front grille and LED headlamps and foglights bringing the latest in technology to bear. The SP25 GT takes on electric folding mirrors and its own design alloy wheels. An updated cabin interior includes a simplified instrument design and a new steering wheel. USB inputs have been moved to the centre console and an electric parking brake is now standard. The instrument panel now has a three-dimensional shape, the door handle bezel uses a sharper design and the satin chrome plated air-conditioning louvre bezels take a similar look. The new Mazda3 has taken on a confidently aggressive appearance especially in SP25 GT format. Exterior mirrors provide slightly better visibility around them for the driver. The all-colour head-up Active Driving Display displays vehicle speed, information from the navigation system and other important information on a clear plastic panel above the instruments. It’s rather basic and not as easy to see as conventional displays that reflect from the windscreen. Mazda’s MZD Connect uses smartphones to receive radio and play music
from mobile audio players, and allows access to Aha, Pandora and Stitcher. A Bose premium audio system with Centerpoint 2 virtual surround sound playback technology is featured on the SP25 GT. The system can read email and short messages aloud while the vehicle is in motion using text-to-voice technology. When a smartphone is connected, it can read aloud the latest Twitter tweets and Facebook news, and also posts audio messages using the Shout function.
All of which is potentially dangerous when used by drivers while on the move. As the suffix suggests, the SP25 GT is fitted with the bigger of the two engines on offer for the Mazda3. With 138 kW and 250 Nm, the 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes use of Mazda’s Skyactiv-G and i-stop engine stop / start technology.
